- 0:08Speaker 1: We have arrived at the midweek, at the humpiest of days,
- 0:16Speaker 1: trying to help you get over that hump and on
- 0:18Speaker 1: the downhill run to the weekend. Good afternoon, everybody. Welcome
- 0:20Speaker 1: to the program here on Sports Radio AM 1300 The Zone,
- 0:25Speaker 1: where we bring you conversation and invite your conversation and
- 0:30Speaker 1: your thoughts as well from two to five. each and
- 0:35Speaker 1: every weekday afternoon, Monday through Friday. My name is Craig Wade.
- 0:37Speaker 1: Glad to have you with us. Thank you so much
- 0:40Speaker 1: for joining us. Let me tell you what's coming up.
- 0:43Speaker 1: We're going to hear a little bit here momentarily from
- 0:46Speaker 1: the Texas women's basketball coach, Vic Schaefer, and the men's
- 0:49Speaker 1: head coach, Sean Miller, because both of their teams have,
- 0:54Speaker 1: and I think this is fair to say, high-profile exhibition
- 0:58Speaker 1: games on Sunday. the Longhorn men will be in New York,
- 1:03Speaker 1: and it'll be an 11 a.m. tip-off against St. John's
- 1:07Speaker 1: at Madison Square Garden. And the Texas women, who already
- 1:11Speaker 1: had a road exhibition game, have a pseudo home game
- 1:18Speaker 1: on Sunday when they host the defending national champion UCLA
- 1:21Speaker 1: Bruins in Cedar Park at the HEB Center. That's a
- 1:25Speaker 1: game that we will broadcast for you, and you can
- 1:27Speaker 1: hear it right here On 13 under the zone, 12.45 airtime,
- 1:29Speaker 1: 1 o'clock tip-off on that. So we'll hear from both
- 1:31Speaker 1: of those coaches coming up here in just a few moments.
- 1:36Speaker 1: Right around the corner, coming up here in about 15
- 1:40Speaker 1: minutes or so, David Kellum is the play-by-play voice of
- 1:43Speaker 1: the Ole Miss Rebels. And DK will join us to
- 1:46Speaker 1: talk about, from the Ole Miss perspective and their side
- 1:49Speaker 1: of things, this matchup between the Rebels and the Texas Longhorns.
- 1:53Speaker 1: We'll have that. We'll have inconceivable this hour as we
- 1:56Speaker 1: invariably do. We'll have that coming up in the three
- 2:00Speaker 1: o'clock hour. We have pushed back our conversation with Greg
- 2:07Speaker 1: Tepper by one day from yesterday to today, the editor
- 2:11Speaker 1: in chief of Dave Campbell's Texas football magazine. There's plenty
- 2:13Speaker 1: of things to talk about. This is a high profile
- 2:16Speaker 1: weekend of district games. There are some massive district games
- 2:20Speaker 1: across the state and we'll, We'll talk with TEP about that. Also,
- 2:26Speaker 1: the latest induction class to be announced for the Texas
- 2:30Speaker 1: High School Football Hall of Fame. That induction banquet will
- 2:33Speaker 1: take place in Waco next May. But they announced the
- 2:36Speaker 1: class yesterday. I mentioned it on yesterday's program. And we'll
- 2:41Speaker 1: run through it again with TEP. So we'll do that.
- 2:44Speaker 1: We'll talk some college football in the state of Texas
- 2:46Speaker 1: with Greg Tepper as well. We're going to hear from
- 2:48Speaker 1: Longhorn players. We'll hear from Justin Cryer. We'll hear from
- 2:51Speaker 1: Hiro Kanu as well. And then in the four o'clock hour,
- 2:56Speaker 1: bring you something that I was listening to this earlier
- 3:01Speaker 1: today here on The Zone where we bring you The
- 3:05Speaker 1: Herd with Colin Cowherd every day. He had Brady Quinn
- 3:09Speaker 1: on with him. Brady Quinn, of course, played quarterback in
- 3:10Speaker 1: Notre Dame and he played seven seasons in the NFL
- 3:13Speaker 1: and Worked, I think, briefly at ESPN, but has been
- 3:16Speaker 1: with Fox for the past several years. And he's part
- 3:22Speaker 1: of the Big Noon kickoff crew. And Brady Quinn was
- 3:25Speaker 1: on with Colin Cowherd. And he talks, he does a
- 3:30Speaker 1: really good cross-section of commentary and thought on a lot
- 3:34Speaker 1: of college football matters, including the Texas Longhorns and Arch Manning.
- 3:39Speaker 1: So I wanted you to hear that, as well as
- 3:42Speaker 1: he talks about Ohio State. Notre Dame, Miami, the National Championship, Chase,
- 3:50Speaker 1: and then what appears to be the impending 2014 college
- 3:57Speaker 1: football playoffs. Not official yet, but looks like all the
- 4:00Speaker 1: signs are pointing in that direction that it'll be that.
- 4:03Speaker 1: So we'll hear from him coming up. from a segment
- 4:09Speaker 1: of Colin Cowherd's show. That's in the four o'clock hour.
- 4:11Speaker 1: We'll do that. So got a lot of stuff to
- 4:13Speaker 1: get to. As always, we welcome your questions, your comments,
- 4:15Speaker 1: your thoughts. All you have to do is you can
- 4:18Speaker 1: text the program. You text the word Texas, followed by
- 4:21Speaker 1: your question or comment to 81530. A great gentleman yesterday
- 4:26Speaker 1: come up to us when we were out at Boulevard Social.
- 4:29Speaker 1: And I hope you can get out there. If you
- 4:32Speaker 1: haven't been out there before, up there on North Lamar,
- 4:34Speaker 1: great place, tremendous food. in that sports bar and good
- 4:42Speaker 1: television sets and things like that to be able to
- 4:44Speaker 1: watch the games. They do WWE watch parties and things
- 4:49Speaker 1: like that as well when they have those big events.
- 4:52Speaker 1: But it's a great place to go in and grab
- 4:54Speaker 1: a burger or a cold beverage or wings or whatever.
- 4:58Speaker 1: So that's at Boulevard Social up there on North Lamar.
- 5:02Speaker 1: And so when we were over there yesterday, we talked
- 5:06Speaker 1: about a variety of different things. and we'll hear some
- 5:14Speaker 1: more from Longhorn players and also on other college football topics.
- 5:19Speaker 1: The producer of the program here in the studio is
- 5:22Speaker 1: Jay Kerman. You were in here yesterday, but I know
- 5:27Speaker 1: you appreciate a good meal, so I'm sure it's now
- 5:30Speaker 1: on your mind, curious about possibly popping by Boulevard when
- 5:33Speaker 1: you get an opportunity.
- 5:34Speaker 2: I'm curious why nobody brought me anything. I was sitting
- 5:37Speaker 2: in here ready to go. I had, like I said
- 5:40Speaker 2: on the air, my fear of missing out. It came true.
- 5:42Speaker 2: It sounded like you guys had a lot of fun
- 5:43Speaker 2: out there.
- 5:43Speaker 3: We did.
- 5:44Speaker 1: Now, let me ask you a simple question. Who would
- 5:46Speaker 1: be coming back this way to bring you something? Well,
- 5:48Speaker 1: that's a good point. Linda and I hung out there
- 5:52Speaker 1: to have an early dinner afterwards. But the other guys
- 5:55Speaker 1: just scattered. Mark Henry's gone. Harge was gone. Cameron was gone.
- 5:59Speaker 2: Everybody's got places to be, huh?
- 6:01Speaker 1: That's it. That's it. That's the deal. Let's hear a
- 6:05Speaker 1: little bit of a basketball conversation before we get back
- 6:07Speaker 1: to talking football. This is from Vic Schaefer. And this
- 6:10Speaker 1: was coming after the loss at UConn and getting ready
- 6:18Speaker 1: for the matchup with UCLA.
- 6:20Speaker 4: Having the opportunity to play tonight was good for us,
- 6:24Speaker 4: and hopefully it was good for Connecticut. When I look
- 6:29Speaker 4: at the game, I mean, our standard at Texas is 60.
- 6:35Speaker 4: And so we gave up 37 in the first half
- 6:38Speaker 4: and then 46, I think, in the second half. So
- 6:43Speaker 4: we obviously didn't live to the standard, but we're not
- 6:45Speaker 4: going to live to the standard with all the new
- 6:48Speaker 4: kids that we're playing right now we're probably going to
- 6:51Speaker 4: struggle in that area for a while. You know, your
- 6:53Speaker 4: defensive chemistry is the last thing that you get. Now,
- 6:57Speaker 4: offensively tonight, we really, we struggle. And I thought we got,
- 7:04Speaker 4: and again, I wear it, right? But I thought they
- 7:07Speaker 4: were tough. Like, I thought Connecticut was really tough tonight.
- 7:09Speaker 4: I thought we got out-toughed. We couldn't make a contested shot.
- 7:13Speaker 4: We couldn't make a contested layup. And then on the
- 7:16Speaker 4: other side, let me tell y'all something. you're going to
- 7:19Speaker 4: lose the horse game. They had wide open shots and
- 7:24Speaker 4: you're going to lose the horse game at this level.
- 7:27Speaker 4: Any team in the top 10, top 15 in the
- 7:30Speaker 4: country got kids that can make shots. And we talk
- 7:33Speaker 4: about it all the time. You're going to lose the
- 7:35Speaker 4: horse game. And we lost the horse game tonight. We
- 7:38Speaker 4: left them wide open. They went three for 22 the
- 7:41Speaker 4: other night. Tonight they went 10 for 18. But Great players,
- 7:46Speaker 4: great shooters are going to make wide open shots. We
- 7:48Speaker 4: didn't have too many wide open shots, y'all. You have
- 7:51Speaker 4: to give them credit. I say this all the time.
- 7:54Speaker 4: You know, Coach Ariyama doesn't get a lot of credit
- 7:58Speaker 4: for his defense. And I think his defense is always good.
- 8:02Speaker 4: You always talk about his offense and their flow and
- 8:05Speaker 4: their movement. But I think defensively, his teams are always tough.
- 8:10Speaker 4: And I thought they were tough tonight. I thought we
- 8:12Speaker 4: just It's going to be a little bit of a
- 8:14Speaker 4: learning curve for us. We're playing a lot of young
- 8:16Speaker 4: kids out there. Started two freshmen. You know, I brought
- 8:20Speaker 4: some kids off the bench that haven't been in our
- 8:22Speaker 4: program that are going to play a lot.
- 8:24Speaker 5: And so they're kind of learning the standard that we have.
- 8:28Speaker 4: But at the end of the day, they shot 53%
- 8:31Speaker 4: for the game, but 64 in the second half. So
- 8:35Speaker 4: that tells the old coach, we might have got tired.
- 8:39Speaker 1: Okay.
- 8:39Speaker 6: Okay.
- 8:41Speaker 1: We may have gotten.
- 8:42Speaker 4: Just a little fatigued and a little tired, but I
- 8:45Speaker 4: just thought tonight, from a toughness standpoint, we were not
- 8:52Speaker 4: Texas tough, as we say. We backed out of some charges.
- 8:56Speaker 4: That doesn't sit well with me. We didn't get some
- 9:00Speaker 4: 50-50 rebounds, some 50-50 balls. Point guard play was not great.
- 9:08Speaker 4: You know, when you're being pressed, you can't secede to
- 9:12Speaker 4: somebody else doing your job. And so, again, as I
- 9:16Speaker 4: told them, and Bree knows this because she's heard it
- 9:18Speaker 4: from me when she'd come off the bench, when you're
- 9:21Speaker 4: the point guard, you're in charge of that team and
- 9:23Speaker 4: you're in charge of the offense. And if the offense
- 9:26Speaker 4: isn't scoring, it falls on the point guard's job. Your
- 9:29Speaker 4: job is to get us into a set, get us
- 9:31Speaker 4: into something, and if the team's not scoring, it's just
- 9:35Speaker 4: like the quarterback of a football team. It falls on
- 9:38Speaker 4: your shoulders. So, I think they'll learn from it and
- 9:42Speaker 4: grow from it. But, again, just too many uncontested shots.
- 9:47Speaker 4: I didn't think we played that hard in the second half. And, again,
- 9:51Speaker 4: I thought both All-Americans were All-Americans tonight. That had to
- 9:54Speaker 4: be fun to watch for a lot of y'all. I
- 9:56Speaker 4: liked mine, and I didn't like watching the other one
- 9:58Speaker 4: because she's pretty good. But I thought Maddie was really
- 10:02Speaker 4: good tonight, competed. And we had some foul trouble, obviously,
- 10:05Speaker 4: with Madison and Brea. Brea had a good first half,
- 10:09Speaker 4: and second half, you know, I don't know that she
- 10:12Speaker 4: scored in the second half. So, again, great opportunity. Glad
- 10:17Speaker 4: we came first half. It's 37-37 and you're competing. But again,
- 10:23Speaker 4: first five minutes is always the most important five minutes
- 10:26Speaker 4: of a half. I didn't think we came out of
- 10:29Speaker 4: the locker room and really realized that. But again, I
- 10:31Speaker 4: got eight new players, y'all. So what I had to
- 10:34Speaker 4: do tonight might have been different from what he had
- 10:36Speaker 4: to do tonight.
- 10:37Speaker 1: And that's okay.
- 10:38Speaker 5: I don't have a problem with that at all. I
- 10:41Speaker 5: think we all got better tonight.
- 10:42Speaker 4: Hopefully we got better, which I think we did, and
- 10:46Speaker 4: hopefully they did as well.
- 10:48Speaker 1: And tonight there'll be an orange-white scrimmage for the Texas
- 10:51Speaker 1: women at Moody Center. It's free, free parking as well.
- 10:54Speaker 1: So take advantage of that if you get an opportunity.
- 10:57Speaker 1: All right, up next, we shift back to football. We're
- 10:59Speaker 1: going to visit with David Kellum, play-by-play voice of the
- 11:01Speaker 1: Ole Miss Rebels when we continue on 13 Under the Zone. Okay,
- 11:15Speaker 1: we got a bit of true confession going on here
- 11:17Speaker 1: on the Yacht Rock Wednesday. Back in August, it happened
- 11:21Speaker 1: to fall on a Wednesday that we visited with my
- 11:24Speaker 1: good friend David Kellum, the play-by-play voice of the Ole
- 11:26Speaker 1: Miss Rebels. And we bump back with this particular tune,
- 11:32Speaker 1: which is Bachman, Turner, Rotterdam Drives, looking out for number one.
- 11:36Speaker 1: And I asked DK because I knew he was a
- 11:39Speaker 1: big yacht rock fan and a classic rock fan. And
- 11:41Speaker 1: he said, oh, yeah, I know all about BTO. Got
- 11:43Speaker 1: a lot of stuff. But to be, and if I'm
- 11:44Speaker 1: quoting him correctly, but to be honest, I thought I
- 11:47Speaker 1: was going to need a martini. When he heard that.
- 11:50Speaker 1: So I said, as David was getting ready to come
- 11:53Speaker 1: back on, I said to Jake, oh, you got to
- 11:55Speaker 1: pull up looking out for number one again. We got
- 11:57Speaker 1: to go down that road again. So I appreciate the indulgence, DK.
- 12:02Speaker 1: How are you?
- 12:03Speaker 3: I guess it's become my theme song. Anytime I talk
- 12:06Speaker 3: to Craig White, it's the way to go when I
- 12:08Speaker 3: talk to Craig White.
- 12:11Speaker 1: And looking out for number one. And that's tough to
- 12:14Speaker 1: do in this league, isn't it?
- 12:16Speaker 2: No doubt.
- 12:17Speaker 3: I mean, I don't want us to get the number one.
- 12:19Speaker 3: I hope that doesn't happen.
- 12:20Speaker 1: Trust me, you don't want that. You don't want that.
- 12:24Speaker 3: The league has been just crazy, hasn't it? Oh, my gosh. Yeah, yeah.
- 12:28Speaker 1: It's something else. And I'm pleased you took an opportunity
- 12:32Speaker 1: here to be on with us. And I have several
- 12:34Speaker 1: questions to ask you. But the first thing I want
- 12:37Speaker 1: to ask you, you've been around Ole Miss coaches for decades,
- 12:41Speaker 1: just as I've been around Texas coaches for decades. I've watched...
- 12:46Speaker 1: Pete Golding's news conference. And I came away from it
- 12:51Speaker 1: being pretty impressed by the relaxed yet completely informative nature
- 13:00Speaker 1: that he brought to the podium, if that makes sense. Because,
- 13:03Speaker 1: you know, you can pull up press conferences from lots
- 13:06Speaker 1: of different coaches. And there's that tension there, even when
- 13:11Speaker 1: things are going well. I mean, the champ of all
- 13:13Speaker 1: of it was Nick Saban, but there's that tension, even
- 13:16Speaker 1: when things are going well. But Golding seems to have
- 13:19Speaker 1: really comfortably transitioned into the head coaching role, starting being
- 13:24Speaker 1: thrown right into the fire in the college football playoff,
- 13:26Speaker 1: but then picking up from there. And I'm just curious
- 13:29Speaker 1: to get your thoughts on how he's handling everything, because
- 13:32Speaker 1: it looks like he's handling all of it with quite
- 13:35Speaker 1: a bit of aplomb. Yeah, no doubt.
- 13:38Speaker 3: And he really, Craig, didn't have a desire to be
- 13:40Speaker 3: the head coach, wanted to continue to be the defense
- 13:42Speaker 3: coordinator and lane stay here.
- 13:44Speaker 1: And yada, yada, yada.
- 13:45Speaker 3: But when it became a possibility, he said, why not me?
- 13:48Speaker 3: And obviously he had a plan on the day that
- 13:51Speaker 3: that would happen. He immediately got out of his defense
- 13:54Speaker 3: coordinator only mode, met all the offensive players, brought them
- 13:58Speaker 3: in one by one, went out and got John David Baker,
- 14:01Speaker 3: the great offense coordinator. So he did all the things.
- 14:03Speaker 3: And I don't know, it was the most amazing period
- 14:08Speaker 3: a year ago. And the way he handled it, it
- 14:09Speaker 3: was huge. I mean, it got us one play away
- 14:12Speaker 3: from being in the national championship game. So he did
- 14:15Speaker 3: a wonderful, wonderful job there. And then this is the
- 14:18Speaker 3: first full year, and as a fan, kind of looking
- 14:20Speaker 3: from a distance, you go, okay, so he did really
- 14:22Speaker 3: good last year. Is he going to be the right
- 14:24Speaker 3: guy to be our head coach? I think there's no
- 14:26Speaker 3: doubt about it. And he's not necessarily laid back. He's
- 14:30Speaker 3: just focused, very, very focused. You know, a ball coach,
- 14:35Speaker 3: not a lot of nonsense, and holds the players accountable
- 14:39Speaker 3: and wants them to become the best version that they
- 14:42Speaker 3: can become. But, yeah, I think he pretty much nailed it.
- 14:45Speaker 3: He's one of those guys that I don't think has
- 14:47Speaker 3: any fear. He's been with Saban as a defense coordinator,
- 14:51Speaker 3: just like Sark was over there. And so those guys
- 14:53Speaker 3: that kind of come out of that tree, they've been
- 14:56Speaker 3: singed a little bit, I guess. And so they get
- 15:00Speaker 3: it for sure.
- 15:01Speaker 1: Yeah, and I would say this too, and I'm curious
- 15:05Speaker 1: to see what you think about this. For years, and
- 15:07Speaker 1: we still hear it, but for years, the past several years,
- 15:11Speaker 1: the buzzword in just about any college football program, especially
- 15:14Speaker 1: for a coach taking on his first year, was the
- 15:16Speaker 1: C word, culture. Everything was about culture. Now I'm hearing
- 15:21Speaker 1: the A word, and you just said it, accountability. And
- 15:23Speaker 1: I heard him say it the other day. Sark has
- 15:27Speaker 1: had to drop that in saying accountability has to go
- 15:30Speaker 1: around when you're not playing the way you should or
- 15:33Speaker 1: even when you are playing well. And so folks may
- 15:36Speaker 1: wonder what exactly does that mean other than, hey, my
- 15:40Speaker 1: bad if I made a mistake. But it means several things,
- 15:42Speaker 1: doesn't it? And I'm sure it does to Coach Golding.
- 15:46Speaker 3: Well, I think so. And the thing, too, now that
- 15:49Speaker 3: they're making money, you hate it to a certain extent.
- 15:52Speaker 3: We've always said through the years, oh, they're just 18, 19, 20-year-olds. Yeah,
- 15:56Speaker 3: but now they're 18, 19, 20-year-olds are getting paid for
- 15:59Speaker 3: their craft and what they're doing. And so it's kind
- 16:01Speaker 3: of like you can't be a kid anymore. You got
- 16:03Speaker 3: to grow up and be more pro-like. And I think
- 16:06Speaker 3: that's kind of the downside of it. The NIL and
- 16:09Speaker 3: the portal transfers and all that, there's a lot of
- 16:11Speaker 3: good to it. You take like Keewon Lacey for us,
- 16:15Speaker 3: who was in a running back room where he wasn't
- 16:18Speaker 3: going to play at Missouri, so he needed to find
- 16:20Speaker 3: another opportunity. Austin Simmons, who just left us and went
- 16:23Speaker 3: to Missouri. was behind trinidad chandler's he's a fantastic quarterback
- 16:27Speaker 3: so i think that you know it's good in a
- 16:29Speaker 3: lot of ways and i'm not against them getting paid
- 16:32Speaker 3: by any means but i do think that it has
- 16:34Speaker 3: it has really increased accountability for players i mean you
- 16:38Speaker 3: don't need to be missing missing meetings there's a fine
- 16:41Speaker 3: system in a lot of schools going on too and
- 16:45Speaker 3: uh but but yeah i think that that that's a
- 16:47Speaker 3: good way to nail it with especially with.
- 16:49Speaker 1: Pete Well, you brought up Kiwan Lacey. I wanted to
- 16:52Speaker 1: get your thoughts on him. You know, I know people
- 16:54Speaker 1: think of him as a former Missouri Tiger. Let me
- 16:56Speaker 1: tell you something. I know him as a former Lancaster Tiger,
- 16:59Speaker 1: you know, from the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex. But he, I think,
- 17:06Speaker 1: has done a really good job in having to work
- 17:09Speaker 1: through and around the injury bug that he's had to
- 17:13Speaker 1: deal with this season. How would you describe what he's
- 17:16Speaker 1: gone through and where he is at the moment?
- 17:19Speaker 3: Very, very tough kid. He's had a banged up shoulder
- 17:22Speaker 3: a little bit, had a little bit of a hamstring
- 17:24Speaker 3: twinge in this last game, and he just keeps on rolling,
- 17:26Speaker 3: gets on the bike, does what he needs to do.
- 17:28Speaker 3: And I'm sure we're not putting him full throttle through
- 17:31Speaker 3: practice as much. But, yeah, we were over in Dallas
- 17:35Speaker 3: for what we call Rebel Road Trip, and we had 500,
- 17:38Speaker 3: 600 people show up. We've got so many Texas students now, Craig.
- 17:42Speaker 3: It's crazy. And Ole Miss has just been kind of
- 17:46Speaker 3: a popular spot for a lot of the Texas kids.
- 17:49Speaker 3: And we had, I think, half of the crowd were
- 17:52Speaker 3: Texans who had attended Ole Miss. I kind of asked
- 17:54Speaker 3: that question. But we took Kiwan because we thought that,
- 17:57Speaker 3: you know, he would be loved in that area.
- 17:59Speaker 1: And he really was.
- 18:00Speaker 3: I mean, he's very popular. in that area and all, but, uh,
- 18:04Speaker 3: he's been fantastic for us and is just a tough kid. He's,
- 18:07Speaker 3: we're a different team when he's in there. We got
- 18:10Speaker 3: a really good room, probably a better overall running back
- 18:12Speaker 3: room than we had even a year ago. Uh, and
- 18:15Speaker 3: Frazier's great. Does a good job. Lindsay is too, but Lacey's,
- 18:18Speaker 3: Lacey's a difference maker. I mean, he's, he's considered a
- 18:21Speaker 3: Heisman possibility for, for a reason. Um, And hopefully we
- 18:25Speaker 3: can get him healthier and he can get more playing
- 18:28Speaker 3: time to go. He got over 100 yards against Missouri,
- 18:31Speaker 3: even though he was banged up. So that's how important
- 18:33Speaker 3: he is to our offense.
- 18:34Speaker 1: Well, I'm in complete agreement with you that he probably
- 18:36Speaker 1: would be a Heisman Trophy if the guy who's handing
- 18:39Speaker 1: him the football wasn't probably front and center on that.
- 18:44Speaker 1: We talked before the season what a great guy Trinidad
- 18:46Speaker 1: Chambliss is and what he means to us. to the program.
- 18:49Speaker 1: And now with the weight of the world, obviously thrust
- 18:53Speaker 1: on him as the quarterback, he has performed remarkably well.
- 18:57Speaker 1: How about your thoughts, both in the disappointment of the
- 19:00Speaker 1: loss to Florida and what he has done, obviously, before
- 19:03Speaker 1: and since?
- 19:05Speaker 3: Well, and you know, even in that game, he played
- 19:07Speaker 3: exceptionally well. He played well in the Florida game. We
- 19:09Speaker 3: just didn't defensively. We were terrible. And we kind of
- 19:12Speaker 3: came back and had some powwows with the team. And
- 19:16Speaker 3: since then, we've been really good defense, especially against Missouri.
- 19:19Speaker 3: We held them down in the running game and they'd
- 19:21Speaker 3: been fantastic the previous two weeks. So we felt really
- 19:24Speaker 3: good about our defensive front and all. And, and, They
- 19:28Speaker 3: have continued to play well, but we're just missing a
- 19:30Speaker 3: bunch of tackles. And I think Pete, as a defense
- 19:32Speaker 3: coordinator by trade, solved that a little bit. But Trinidad
- 19:36Speaker 3: played well in that game. And, you know, here's the
- 19:38Speaker 3: thing about him, Craig. So he comes from Ferris State.
- 19:40Speaker 3: You know, I'm sure in his mind, he's not real sure,
- 19:43Speaker 3: do I belong at this level? And so we go
- 19:46Speaker 3: out and look at him last year as a backup
- 19:48Speaker 3: quarterback in practice. Harry Harrison is my color analyst. And
- 19:52Speaker 3: we went on, so let's go look at this kid
- 19:53Speaker 3: from Ferris State. So we go over to the practice
- 19:55Speaker 3: field and watch him and say, hey, he's going to
- 19:58Speaker 3: be all right. If something should happen to Austin Simmons
- 20:00Speaker 3: or if we need him, he can handle it. He
- 20:02Speaker 3: can handle it. So he ended up just exploding onto
- 20:07Speaker 3: the scene. Unfortunately, Austin does go down. We pretty much
- 20:10Speaker 3: had Austin Pennsylvania as the number one guy all year
- 20:12Speaker 3: last year, but the injury was slow to recovery, and
- 20:15Speaker 3: Trinidad just got better and better. But the thing that
- 20:18Speaker 3: I like about him is he's still very humble, even
- 20:21Speaker 3: though now everybody's bragging about him and he's on the
- 20:24Speaker 3: Heisman list and all of these things. He's still working
- 20:27Speaker 3: on his craft. He wants to be better. It's only
- 20:30Speaker 3: halfway through the second year he's played in Division I.
- 20:34Speaker 3: And so he's been very humble and super, super talented.
- 20:37Speaker 3: But we've also watched him get better game by game,
- 20:42Speaker 3: making the throws better. He had a couple of misses
- 20:44Speaker 3: in this last game, but then he turned it on
- 20:46Speaker 3: and hit some fantastic passes down the stretch. So knows
- 20:50Speaker 3: when to run, very cerebral, if you will, as a quarterback.
- 20:54Speaker 3: And you always feel like you got a chance when
- 20:56Speaker 3: you've got him.
- 20:58Speaker 1: Yeah, and then when you've got receivers like Deuce Alexander
- 21:01Speaker 1: and Horatio Fields, that makes a big difference, and certainly
- 21:05Speaker 1: they're worth the wait. I want to ask you about
- 21:07Speaker 1: the other guy, the former Longhorn, John Tate Cook, because
- 21:09Speaker 1: he had, and I call it a state championship games
- 21:12Speaker 1: when he played at DeSoto, and he had some big
- 21:16Speaker 1: moments in Texas, but it didn't work out from there,
- 21:18Speaker 1: and then went to Syracuse and had some off the
- 21:20Speaker 1: field things, and it didn't work out. It looks like
- 21:23Speaker 1: he has, if not reinvented himself, kind of retooled himself.
- 21:28Speaker 1: Is that a fair way to describe it? Because he's
- 21:29Speaker 1: obviously been a contributor.
- 21:30Speaker 3: Yeah, I think so. Yeah, I think so. We're kind
- 21:34Speaker 3: of a weird receiving room. You know, we lost a
- 21:36Speaker 3: lot of those key guys from that playoff run team
- 21:39Speaker 3: a year ago. Deuce is one of the returning players,
- 21:41Speaker 3: and he leads us by far as far as receiving goes.
- 21:43Speaker 3: Alexander does. But Fields and Ray and Cook and those guys,
- 21:49Speaker 3: it's kind of an equal distribution among them. They're all
- 21:51Speaker 3: handling it pretty well. Caleb Odom is kind of a
- 21:53Speaker 3: hybrid tight end, H-back. And then you've got a couple
- 21:57Speaker 3: of other tight ends that are in the mix too.
- 21:59Speaker 3: But Tate's done a good job. He's... You know, one
- 22:03Speaker 3: of those guys that's getting his third stop, so to speak.
- 22:06Speaker 3: We also took him to Dallas when we had our
- 22:08Speaker 3: Rebel Road Trip over there. And he got a nice
- 22:10Speaker 3: round of applause when we introduced him and all. I
- 22:13Speaker 3: got to meet his family there, too. And, yeah, I
- 22:17Speaker 3: think he is kind of reinventing himself and trying to
- 22:21Speaker 3: stay on track the rest of his career.
- 22:23Speaker 1: What was the key, do you think, in flipping the
- 22:27Speaker 1: script and being able, because, you know, coaches talk about
- 22:30Speaker 1: it and players talk about it too, about shelving it,
- 22:33Speaker 1: putting behind them, you know, if they have a disappointing
- 22:36Speaker 1: loss and being able to move on. It stunned a
- 22:40Speaker 1: lot of people, especially after the win over LSU to
- 22:43Speaker 1: have what happened happen. in the swamp there. But Texas
- 22:48Speaker 1: discovered that last year and they discovered it last week
- 22:50Speaker 1: about having to deal with Florida and all that. But
- 22:52Speaker 1: to be able to turn it back around to play
- 22:55Speaker 1: so well against Vanderbilt and then against Missouri, what was
- 22:58Speaker 1: the best thing that you noticed about how the team
- 23:00Speaker 1: kind of dusted itself off and went back to work?
- 23:05Speaker 3: It's hard to measure, but you don't know how much
- 23:09Speaker 3: or what part of it is that just showed up
- 23:11Speaker 3: at Florida. My wife and Gene, bless her, Mary said,
- 23:15Speaker 3: she said, have you looked at the schedule and who
- 23:17Speaker 3: we're playing after LSU? I said, yeah, I think it's Florida.
- 23:21Speaker 3: She said, yes, Florida, on the road where we don't
- 23:24Speaker 3: do really well. And win or lose, that's going to
- 23:26Speaker 3: be a tough game. And she was 100% right. And
- 23:29Speaker 3: they just, they stuffed us and they ran the ball.
- 23:31Speaker 3: And Jaden was fantastic in that game. Hadn't been quite
- 23:34Speaker 3: as good since, too. And then they lose a couple
- 23:36Speaker 3: of games after that and get the win over Texas.
- 23:38Speaker 3: I mean, the whole thing is just... crazy but i
- 23:40Speaker 3: think what we did was get go back to the
- 23:43Speaker 3: drawing room and during the two-week period uh pete said
- 23:47Speaker 3: that they really increased self-evaluation you know self-evaluation is fan
- 23:52Speaker 3: sometimes we don't know but that's an ongoing thing with
- 23:54Speaker 3: all our programs especially in our league too but you're
- 23:56Speaker 3: looking at your own tendencies making sure you're not throwing
- 23:59Speaker 3: something out there on video that that people can say
- 24:01Speaker 3: oh when they do this you know the the We
- 24:04Speaker 3: can take advantage of it, blah, blah, blah. So there's
- 24:05Speaker 3: a lot of self-scouting going on. And then really got
- 24:09Speaker 3: physical during that two-week period. I think we'd come into
- 24:11Speaker 3: these camps sometime before season started. Good old days. You
- 24:14Speaker 3: had two days and you knocked each other crazy. And
- 24:16Speaker 3: so you were up to speed physically. But the fear
- 24:19Speaker 3: of getting players hurt and that kind of thing, I
- 24:21Speaker 3: just don't know how physical we are. We did have
- 24:24Speaker 3: some physical practice. and periods before the season started. But
- 24:27Speaker 3: we really got down and dirty during that two-week period,
- 24:30Speaker 3: especially the first week, and made sure we were getting
- 24:34Speaker 3: people on the ground defensively. And we've just played so
- 24:37Speaker 3: much better defensively the last two games.
- 24:39Speaker 1: David, this isn't the right phraseology, but I'll ask it anyway.
- 24:43Speaker 1: How weird is this league? I mean, I know L
- 24:46Speaker 1: tough and a grind and all this, but to see
- 24:49Speaker 1: some of the things that have happened, you know, from
- 24:53Speaker 1: what Kentucky has done and then LSU up and down
- 24:56Speaker 1: and then Texas starts four and oh, and they're number
- 24:58Speaker 1: one and now they've dropped two in a row and
- 25:01Speaker 1: Oklahoma looked great, and then they fall back, and then
- 25:04Speaker 1: Auburn winning at Georgia, and then Alabama losing at Tennessee.
- 25:11Speaker 1: What does it say about this league other than the
- 25:13Speaker 1: fact that it's a tough league to be in?
- 25:15Speaker 3: I know you and the Longhorns are a recent arrival,
- 25:19Speaker 3: so to speak. But for someone who's been associated with
- 25:22Speaker 3: it for like 40 years, this is one of the
- 25:24Speaker 3: craziest years ever. And I think it's because everybody has
- 25:27Speaker 3: got 25 million plus rosters. Everybody's got really good players.
- 25:32Speaker 3: And if they show up and they play well and
- 25:35Speaker 3: you're a little bit off, you can get beat. I
- 25:37Speaker 3: just think top to bottom, there's that potential there. Some
- 25:40Speaker 3: have got better depth than others. I also think that
- 25:44Speaker 3: the portal has affected maybe some blue blood depth, if
- 25:47Speaker 3: you will. I mean, Alabama used to go four deep.
- 25:49Speaker 3: And if somebody got hurt, just plugged another one in
- 25:52Speaker 3: and you ran out of gas late in the game.
- 25:54Speaker 3: I don't think that's happening as much either. And believe me,
- 25:58Speaker 3: I'm just guessing. I really am. Because it's just been
- 26:00Speaker 3: a crazy year of how we're kind of beating each
- 26:03Speaker 3: other up. And you hope, Craig, by the time you
- 26:06Speaker 3: get to the end, that the committee will look at
- 26:09Speaker 3: all And if there's a handful of nine and threes
- 26:12Speaker 3: that they'll say, hey, you know, they're not a three.
- 26:13Speaker 3: But so that's going to be the mystery down the road.
- 26:17Speaker 3: But we sure are beating each other up. And you
- 26:19Speaker 3: just don't know. It makes it very exciting from weekend
- 26:21Speaker 3: to weekend to see what's going to happen.
- 26:23Speaker 1: No doubt about it. He's David Kellum, play by play
- 26:25Speaker 1: voice of the Ole Miss Rebels. D.K., are you bringing Ms.
- 26:28Speaker 1: Mary with you?
- 26:30Speaker 3: Ms. Berry's not making this trip. We came to Texas
- 26:33Speaker 3: for baseball. She came with me on that one. Came
- 26:35Speaker 3: to football last time we'd been to basketball. So she's
- 26:37Speaker 3: taking a break this weekend and going with the best
- 26:39Speaker 3: friend of hers to the lake. So she's punting me
- 26:42Speaker 3: going up to Pickwick to the lake this weekend. But
- 26:46Speaker 3: we are bringing a good crew, and we're looking forward
- 26:49Speaker 3: to it. We're going to stay out in Round Rock.
- 26:51Speaker 3: Team's going to be at Round Rock and see what
- 26:53Speaker 3: we can do with Texas. I really wish you'd won
- 26:55Speaker 3: last weekend so you wouldn't be backs against the wall.
- 26:58Speaker 3: But oh well, it is what it is, right?
- 27:01Speaker 1: We've learned that that sometimes matters and sometimes doesn't. So
- 27:04Speaker 1: I guess we'll see how that does. Exactly right. Hey, DK,
- 27:07Speaker 1: thanks for the time. I appreciate it. Look forward to
- 27:09Speaker 1: seeing you this weekend.
- 27:12Speaker 5: All right.
- 27:13Speaker 1: That's David Kellum, play-by-play voice of the Ole Miss Rebels.
- 27:16Speaker 1: Up next, we bring Inconceivable here on Sports Radio AM
- 27:18Speaker 1: 13 Under the Zone and the iHeartRadio app. Second hour
- 27:37Speaker 1: of the program here on Sports Radio AM 13 Under
- 27:40Speaker 1: the Zone. Craig Way with you alongside the producer, Jay Kerman.
- 27:42Speaker 1: Glad to have you with us. We're with you up
- 27:44Speaker 1: until 5 o'clock. Bucky and BK come along at 5.
- 27:47Speaker 1: A reminder that the Texas women's basketball team has an
- 27:54Speaker 1: orange-white exhibition tonight that's free. Parking's free as well there
- 27:59Speaker 1: if you want to go out and see that. That's
- 28:01Speaker 1: at 6 o'clock this evening. We're going to hear from
- 28:04Speaker 1: Vic Schaefer. And by the way, Vic is going to
- 28:06Speaker 1: be on tomorrow morning with the morning kickoff. So he'll
- 28:09Speaker 1: be on with Mike Hardball-Harge and also Mark Henry. So
- 28:14Speaker 1: he'll kind of recap that and look ahead to what's
- 28:17Speaker 1: going to happen on Sunday, the exhibition against defending national
- 28:21Speaker 1: champion UCLA in Cedar Park. And they come off that
- 28:25Speaker 1: exhibition loss at UConn on Monday night. We'll hear from
- 28:28Speaker 1: him in a moment. Also going to hear from men's
- 28:33Speaker 1: head coach Sean Miller. They got a pretty high-profile exhibition
- 28:36Speaker 1: of their own. coming up on Sunday morning, 11 a.m.,
- 28:41Speaker 1: at Madison Square Garden in New York, taking on the
- 28:43Speaker 1: New York, and not taking on the New York Knicks.
- 28:45Speaker 1: The New York Knicks might want to take on, after
- 28:48Speaker 1: losing their opener, hanging the banner, and then LeBron and company,
- 28:53Speaker 1: the Sixers beating him. I tip my hat to Mike Hardball-Hard.
- 28:57Speaker 1: He said, you know what happens? When you hang the banner,
- 28:59Speaker 1: you get worked. It was only a six-point game, but
- 29:02Speaker 1: they still got worked.
- 29:04Speaker 7: Well, and look, you saw right away the difference that
- 29:07Speaker 7: LeBron James can make. I thought his defense was good
- 29:09Speaker 7: in that game last night, especially late down the stretch. And, yeah,
- 29:13Speaker 7: of course it's a motivating factor for LeBron James. There's
- 29:15Speaker 7: no secret. He's in Philadelphia to try and win a ring,
- 29:18Speaker 7: to try and add a banner to the end of
- 29:20Speaker 7: his career here. And there's nothing that's a greater motivation
- 29:23Speaker 7: than seeing one go up in your rival's gym before tip-off.
- 29:27Speaker 1: It's a good little cushion here to watch some NBA
- 29:30Speaker 1: because I know we've had football. There is at least
- 29:33Speaker 1: one football game every day for, what, 53 days or
- 29:37Speaker 1: whatever it is. And there's one tonight, I think. as well.
- 29:40Speaker 1: There were, I think, two last night. And then there's
- 29:43Speaker 1: one tonight, a college game. Who's playing tonight? This is
- 29:50Speaker 1: usually the night of Conference USA. They're big on Wednesdays.
- 29:54Speaker 1: Like Sam Houston plays a lot of Wednesday games. So
- 29:57Speaker 1: it wouldn't surprise me if they were playing, but it's usually.
- 29:59Speaker 2: Bingo.
- 30:00Speaker 7: New Mexico State pays a visit to Bauer Stadium in Huntsville.
- 30:04Speaker 1: Okay, so there you go. Sam Houston, your home for
- 30:06Speaker 1: Wednesday night football. So anyway, that one's going on tonight.
- 30:10Speaker 1: But anyway, the basketball, since World Series doesn't start until Friday...
- 30:16Speaker 1: Gene Watson, our MLB insider, will join us tomorrow to
- 30:20Speaker 1: preview the World Series and to talk about the impending
- 30:23Speaker 1: dark clouds of the offseason. So we'll visit with him
- 30:26Speaker 1: about all that. With regard to college football, a question
- 30:30Speaker 1: on the text line from The Savant on X, our
- 30:33Speaker 1: man CB. He says, what do you remember about Lincoln
- 30:36Speaker 1: 20 years ago today in the snow? Was that the
- 30:39Speaker 1: first time Texas had played in the snow? I don't
- 30:44Speaker 1: think so, CB. I'm trying to remember. I know they
- 30:52Speaker 1: played in the snow in some games in the past,
- 30:54Speaker 1: games that preceded my time being on the broadcast. But
- 31:00Speaker 1: there were some other games that had snow falling. And
- 31:04Speaker 1: that was a weird day, weather-wise anyway, because it offered
- 31:11Speaker 1: a mixture of There was some sunshine. There was some drizzle.
- 31:16Speaker 1: There was some sleet. There was some snow. That's what
- 31:20Speaker 1: I remember about it. It was all sorts of things.
- 31:24Speaker 1: I also remember late in the game, Nebraska had a
- 31:28Speaker 1: chance to put it away and fumbled, and Aaron Ross
- 31:31Speaker 1: recovered a fumble for Texas, and they set it up
- 31:36Speaker 1: for the Longhorns to try a game-winning field goal. And
- 31:41Speaker 1: We had been told before the game that the Longhorns
- 31:46Speaker 1: regular kicker had like a groin strain or something and
- 31:48Speaker 1: wouldn't be able to go. And I'm always grateful to
- 31:51Speaker 1: John Bianca for doing this. He came into Booth and
- 31:54Speaker 1: told us, to a tip of the hat, he said,
- 31:56Speaker 1: we got a walk-on guy at an Anderson High named
- 32:00Speaker 1: Ryan Bailey. And if we need a field goal thing,
- 32:04Speaker 1: he'd be the one.
- 32:05Speaker 3: I said, okay.
- 32:06Speaker 1: So they were covering, and here they are setting up
- 32:08Speaker 1: for the game-winning field goal. And I had no end
- 32:11Speaker 1: of people telling me that even though John, who always
- 32:15Speaker 1: does a great job, goes in and lets all the
- 32:18Speaker 1: television people know what's going on, even though he went
- 32:20Speaker 1: in and told the ABC broadcast crew before the game
- 32:26Speaker 1: that we have a backup place kicker that Brent Musburger
- 32:29Speaker 1: forgot about, I'd said, all right, now on for the
- 32:32Speaker 1: game winning field goal try. And it was the other
- 32:35Speaker 1: guy who was Injured.
- 32:37Speaker 2: Made him sound like a yacht rock musician there.
- 32:39Speaker 1: You ever hear Musburger doing that kind of thing? You're
- 32:41Speaker 1: looking live. So anyway, Ryan Bailey knocked it through. Anderson
- 32:46Speaker 1: High School legend that he became and Texas legend. Game-winning
- 32:50Speaker 1: field goal to beat Nebraska.
- 32:51Speaker 2: Okay, I did some quick research on snow matchups here.
- 32:55Speaker 1: Yeah. 1993. Oh, my goodness. How could I forget that? Wow, yeah. CB,
- 33:00Speaker 1: you should remember that. 93 against A & M. It's
- 33:03Speaker 1: Thanksgiving night. And the Loghorns were 5-4-1 going into the game.
- 33:12Speaker 1: And Texas A & M, I think, was 10-1. And yet,
- 33:18Speaker 1: they were either 10-1... No, no, no.
- 33:21Speaker 3: 9-1.
- 33:21Speaker 1: Because they were playing 11-game regular season schedule. I think
- 33:24Speaker 1: the Aggies were either 9-1 or 8-2. And the Loghorns
- 33:26Speaker 1: were 5-4-1. And yet.
- 33:32Speaker 1: Whoever won that game was going to win the Southwest
- 33:34Speaker 1: Conference title and go to the Cotton Bowl. And in
- 33:38Speaker 1: the fourth quarter, Texas is down 15-9, pretty late in
- 33:43Speaker 1: the game. And there's a, Shea Marins, I believe it was,
- 33:49Speaker 1: threw an interception in the end zone. And then the
- 33:52Speaker 1: Aggies tacked on a real late field goal. They won 18-9.
- 33:55Speaker 2: Dennis Allen picked them off.
- 33:56Speaker 1: Yep. And so the Aggies won to do that. But yes,
- 34:02Speaker 1: there was snow and ice everywhere. And I was living
- 34:04Speaker 1: in the Metroplex and commuting for all the games. And
- 34:06Speaker 1: I had to drive back to Dallas. And I like
- 34:08Speaker 1: to tell people that late at night that I skidded
- 34:11Speaker 1: my way around the traffic circle in Mahea on the
- 34:14Speaker 1: way on the drive back up. You'll also remember this
- 34:18Speaker 1: if you're a Dallas Cowboys fan. That was the day
- 34:22Speaker 1: when they played the Miami Dolphins at Texas Stadium on Thanksgiving,
- 34:26Speaker 1: and the Cowboys blocked what was going to be a
- 34:29Speaker 1: game-winning field goal try, except the ball went forward, and
- 34:34Speaker 1: Leon Lett went over and tried to pick it up
- 34:36Speaker 1: and slid. The ball got away from him. Dolphins recover.
- 34:40Speaker 1: And on the next play, they kick a walk-off field goal.
- 34:43Speaker 7: Surely that's the only Butterfingers moment for Leon Led in
- 34:46Speaker 7: his career. Yeah, it was the second one in nine
- 34:48Speaker 7: months going back to that Super Bowl. It did not
- 34:51Speaker 7: hurt the Cowboys. They went on and won the Super
- 34:53Speaker 7: Bowl anyway that year. But that was it. He just
- 34:55Speaker 7: went up to it. And that's why the word is,
- 34:57Speaker 7: if it goes forward, you know, don't touch it. Whatever
- 35:01Speaker 7: you do, do not touch the ball.
- 35:03Speaker 2: That happened in the Bastrop game.
- 35:06Speaker 1: Oh, it did?
- 35:06Speaker 3: Yeah. Yeah.
- 35:07Speaker 1: So, yeah, you don't want to do that. But that
- 35:11Speaker 1: was that day. And it was. There was quite a
- 35:13Speaker 1: bit of snow. They cleared it off for the game,
- 35:16Speaker 1: but it was really, really cold. 1982 Sun Bowl.
- 35:19Speaker 2: Oh, yeah.
- 35:20Speaker 3: Okay.
- 35:21Speaker 1: They played North Carolina in the Sun Bowl in 1982. Now,
- 35:24Speaker 1: I was a student in North Texas at the time.
- 35:26Speaker 1: I didn't have any affiliation with Texas. But I remember
- 35:29Speaker 1: watching that game on Christmas Day. The long-run quarterback was
- 35:33Speaker 1: Todd Dodge. Of course, went on winning the state championships
- 35:37Speaker 1: at Salt Lake Carroll and then Westlake and now at
- 35:40Speaker 1: Lovejoy High. Todd was the quarterback, and I've asked him
- 35:44Speaker 1: a couple of times about that game and how miserable
- 35:46Speaker 1: it was that day. And North Carolina won that game,
- 35:49Speaker 1: I think, 26-10 or something like that.
- 35:51Speaker 2: That's right.
- 35:51Speaker 7: And Danny Davis reported it's the only time that any
- 35:54Speaker 7: of UT's athletic teams have ever played on Christmas.
- 35:57Speaker 3: Wow. Yeah.
- 35:59Speaker 2: At least as of Danny Davis' story about it a
- 36:01Speaker 2: couple years ago.
- 36:02Speaker 3: Okay. All right.
- 36:03Speaker 1: So there it is. Yeah, that was in the Sun
- 36:05Speaker 1: Bowl on Christmas. So there's a couple of your thoughts
- 36:09Speaker 1: on that. Okay, coming up, we're going to talk some
- 36:13Speaker 1: more football. Greg Tepper, editor-in-chief of Dave Campbell's Texas Football Magazine.
- 36:17Speaker 1: You'll join us next when we continue on Sports Radio
- 36:19Speaker 1: AM 13 Under the Zone and the iHeartRadio app.
- 36:22Speaker 8: Oh, give me.
- 36:24Speaker 2: The beat, boys, and free my soul.
- 36:27Speaker 8: I want to get lost in your rock.
- 36:45Speaker 1: Just all kind of drifting away or trying to drift
- 36:47Speaker 1: back into it here on Yacht Rock Wednesday here on
- 36:50Speaker 1: 1300 The Zone and the great Dobie Gray there. You know,
- 36:56Speaker 1: when we play at the end of the show every day,
- 36:59Speaker 1: we play that instrumental version from the Ramsey Lewis Trio.
- 37:04Speaker 1: of the in crowd. But if you were to hear
- 37:07Speaker 1: Dobie Gray's vocal of that going all the way back
- 37:10Speaker 1: to 1965, if you heard it, you probably would not
- 37:16Speaker 1: equate that with what we were just hitting you with
- 37:18Speaker 1: there with Drift Away. And then, and I like the
- 37:23Speaker 1: fact that Dobie was included on the on the Uncle
- 37:28Speaker 1: Cracker edition, on the bridge of it anyway.
- 37:31Speaker 2: Only thing saving that version of it, if you ask me.
- 37:34Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, right, exactly. You know what saves this segment
- 37:38Speaker 1: from time to time is getting to visit with the
- 37:41Speaker 1: editor-in-chief of Dave Campbell's Texas Football Magazine. Greg Tepper joins
- 37:44Speaker 1: us right now. And, Tepp, we'll get back into the
- 37:50Speaker 1: specifics later. uh here in a few minutes because i
- 37:53Speaker 1: want to go over to college but before i go
- 37:54Speaker 1: to college uh is this a cataclysmic week for high
- 37:57Speaker 1: school football across the state when you look at some
- 37:59Speaker 1: of the matchups oh wait i can't hear you guys
- 38:04Speaker 1: hold on i got you real well um having some
- 38:10Speaker 1: trouble hearing you guys and i couldn't hear you just
- 38:12Speaker 1: in jake give me one second all right all right
- 38:15Speaker 1: so you're trying to pull that in and and and
- 38:18Speaker 1: uh seeing if he can pull that back in. So we'll,
- 38:21Speaker 1: he'll try to do that. Um, in the meantime, while
- 38:24Speaker 1: we try to do that, I did want to bring
- 38:26Speaker 1: you the comments, uh, from, uh, Sean Miller. So let's,
- 38:29Speaker 1: let's do this about them getting ready for this exhibition
- 38:31Speaker 1: game on Sunday while we get, uh, TEP reestablished here.
- 38:35Speaker 9: As you guys, I think are aware of we've, we've
- 38:37Speaker 9: had two close scrimmages and just, uh, out of the
- 38:39Speaker 9: spirit of, of, uh, following what we're allowed to talk about. Um,
- 38:44Speaker 9: I won't get into the score of either game as
- 38:46Speaker 9: much as just I can talk about how I feel
- 38:49Speaker 9: about our team. Now, we've played two teams, both Arizona State,
- 38:54Speaker 9: which we did in Moody, and then recently at SMU.
- 38:57Speaker 9: Those are the two closed scrimmages. Moving forward on Sunday, obviously,
- 39:02Speaker 9: that's open to the public. That's in Madison Square Garden,
- 39:05Speaker 9: playing against a great program in St.
- 39:08Speaker 7: John's.
- 39:08Speaker 9: That'll be a great, great test for us. But a
- 39:11Speaker 9: couple things. I think we're still on a really good track.
- 39:14Speaker 9: I've been very positive just in terms of, you know,
- 39:17Speaker 9: my overall feelings about the team that we have, the
- 39:20Speaker 9: group that we have. I believe that we're deeper, more
- 39:23Speaker 9: talented across the board. And our guys just they've really
- 39:28Speaker 9: done an amazing job of just. having a process working
- 39:32Speaker 9: hard themselves trying to listen trying to learn trying to
- 39:35Speaker 9: grow and I really believe we've made a lot of
- 39:38Speaker 9: progress with them in five months the thing that really
- 39:41Speaker 9: stands out for me early on is you know In
- 39:45Speaker 9: my mind, this is a good thing. We're nowhere near
- 39:49Speaker 9: where we one day can be with this team. And
- 39:51Speaker 9: I don't mean beyond this year. I'm talking about this year.
- 39:54Speaker 9: It's just when you have one player, Modis, who played
- 39:57Speaker 9: on our team a year ago, meaning real minutes, big role. Obviously,
- 40:02Speaker 9: he was a huge factor in a year ago. You
- 40:05Speaker 9: can't really name two. They're just one. And so as
- 40:09Speaker 9: we start to play against other teams, you feel that
- 40:12Speaker 9: because this is like the first bus ride we took
- 40:14Speaker 9: together It's the first time that we've been on the
- 40:16Speaker 9: same bench together. It's the first time we're going through
- 40:20Speaker 9: all these things together for the first time. And although
- 40:23Speaker 9: I think we have a really good group, there's nothing
- 40:26Speaker 9: that can make up for experience. So I think every
- 40:29Speaker 9: week that we're together, even the fact we've already played
- 40:32Speaker 9: two other teams, it's much more beneficial and helpful for
- 40:35Speaker 9: us today than it would have been two weeks ago.
- 40:38Speaker 9: You can only practice and play against yourself so much.
- 40:41Speaker 9: So I'm really looking forward to the trip to New
- 40:43Speaker 9: York City. I'm looking forward to that experience. It will
- 40:46Speaker 9: not be easy, but I believe that's the next test
- 40:50Speaker 9: that we need as we now get ready to open up.
- 40:54Speaker 1: Okay, and again, that exhibition game is Sunday morning at
- 40:57Speaker 1: 11 o'clock against St. John's at Madison Square Garden. Quite
- 41:01Speaker 1: the exhibition game, just as it will be for the
- 41:03Speaker 1: Texas women against the defending national champion, UCLA, at the
- 41:07Speaker 1: HEB Center in Cedar Park Sunday afternoon at 1. Okay.
- 41:11Speaker 1: Bugs corrected. Tepper is back with us now. And I
- 41:15Speaker 1: started to ask you a cataclysmic statement about high school football.
- 41:19Speaker 1: And we'll get to that in a moment. But let
- 41:22Speaker 1: me start off with, well... To Longhorn fans, it's been
- 41:26Speaker 1: a cataclysmic fortnight. But with regard to the rest of that,
- 41:30Speaker 1: with the Dave Campbell's Texas football power poll, Texas tag
- 41:35Speaker 1: number one, Houston number two, SMU number three in that poll.
- 41:40Speaker 1: And what a big game, Houston-Utah, to draw ESPN's college
- 41:44Speaker 1: game day out there.
- 41:46Speaker 10: Yeah, how about that? I mean, you know, in the
- 41:48Speaker 10: state of Texas, we obviously talk about the big flagship
- 41:51Speaker 10: programs of Texas and Texas A & M, you know,
- 41:53Speaker 10: add in maybe Texas Tech there. But the rise of Houston,
- 41:57Speaker 10: you know, I know you and I have been talking
- 41:58Speaker 10: about it since the offseason about how, you know, what
- 42:01Speaker 10: Willie Fritz is doing there at Houston is.
- 42:04Speaker 3: is really special and it might be flying under the radar.
- 42:07Speaker 10: You know, I know that there was some frustration a
- 42:09Speaker 10: couple of weeks ago when, when, you know, a nationally
- 42:12Speaker 10: ranked Houston team, you know, played in front of a
- 42:15Speaker 10: relatively small crowd there at their stadium.
- 42:18Speaker 3: And I think that, you know, people got started to.
- 42:21Speaker 10: Not pay attention to what this team looks like because
- 42:23Speaker 10: they have been absolutely exceptional. And I'll tell you, The
- 42:27Speaker 10: Conor Wegman story is a really remarkable one. We put
- 42:31Speaker 10: him on the cover of our magazine back in 2024,
- 42:33Speaker 10: famously with Quinn Ewers. with kind of the renewal of
- 42:40Speaker 10: the A & M and Texas rivalry. Well, your mileage
- 42:44Speaker 10: may vary.
- 42:45Speaker 3: I know Texas fans have their feelings.
- 42:47Speaker 10: About Quinn Ewers, and A & M fans certainly have
- 42:50Speaker 10: their feelings about Conor Wegman. But for Wegman to land
- 42:53Speaker 10: on his feet in the way that he has there
- 42:55Speaker 10: at Houston and really blossom into the guy that we
- 42:58Speaker 10: thought he could be, He's really impressive. I mean, we've
- 43:01Speaker 10: seen this since he was at Bridgeland, kind of.
- 43:03Speaker 3: Tearing it up there in Cyprus.
- 43:04Speaker 10: And now he's turned into a real certified, you know,
- 43:08Speaker 10: field general out there for the Cougs. And he's got
- 43:11Speaker 10: a great opportunity to have a big showcase match up there,
- 43:14Speaker 10: you know, in in Salt Lake City against a really
- 43:17Speaker 10: good Utah team, an opportunity to make some noise. And
- 43:21Speaker 10: I think when you're talking about what this team has
- 43:23Speaker 10: looked like and what Willie Fritz has built.
- 43:27Speaker 8: There, you know, it's only the beginning.
- 43:28Speaker 10: I mean, you remember they brought in the number one
- 43:30Speaker 10: quarterback in the state last year in Keyshawn Henderson.
- 43:33Speaker 3: He's waiting in the wings.
- 43:35Speaker 10: There's something building there in the third ward.
- 43:38Speaker 3: And, you know, I think that.
- 43:40Speaker 10: That's one of the, it's probably an opportunity, I think,
- 43:43Speaker 10: this week for a lot of people who may not
- 43:45Speaker 10: have necessarily know what's been going on at Houston to
- 43:49Speaker 10: get a look at what is a really darn good
- 43:50Speaker 10: ball club.
- 43:51Speaker 1: You know, what's interesting is they have this huge test
- 43:55Speaker 1: at Utah on Saturday, and then they have an open
- 43:59Speaker 1: date to go trick-or-treating on Halloween. And then after that,
- 44:03Speaker 1: I think it's very manageable for them. They have Cincinnati
- 44:05Speaker 1: at home, maybe a tricky trip to Boulder to play
- 44:07Speaker 1: Colorado on that Friday night there. It's never a guarantee
- 44:11Speaker 1: we go to Morgantown, but they got to go there.
- 44:13Speaker 1: And then they finished with Baylor. I mean, there's a real...
- 44:17Speaker 1: increase their opportunity two games come to mind for me
- 44:20Speaker 1: tip on the collegiate level in the state right now
- 44:23Speaker 1: other than obviously that what I have to deal with
- 44:25Speaker 1: on a week-by-week basis with Texas but the the Houston
- 44:29Speaker 1: at Utah game and and then SMU has Notre Dame
- 44:33Speaker 1: late in the season we're already hearing conversation because the
- 44:36Speaker 1: way that Notre Dame BYU game ended that if Notre
- 44:39Speaker 1: Dame loses to Miami And then the SMU game becomes
- 44:45Speaker 1: a must win for them or they're probably not getting
- 44:47Speaker 1: in the playoff. And SMU, on the other hand, can
- 44:51Speaker 1: continue to upgrade its profile by continuing to win leading
- 44:54Speaker 1: up to that game in South Bend in late November.
- 44:57Speaker 10: Yeah, I think right now when you take a look
- 44:59Speaker 10: at what SMU's got in front of them, they play
- 45:02Speaker 10: at home against Cal, they're at Syracuse, and they're home
- 45:05Speaker 10: against Virginia Tech. You would think that SMU should be
- 45:09Speaker 10: able to take care of business against those three. And
- 45:11Speaker 10: then you're going to have a really dynamic and really
- 45:16Speaker 10: interesting kind of twofer for them when they take welcome
- 45:21Speaker 10: in Wake Forest and they go to Notre Dame. And,
- 45:24Speaker 10: you know, look, at that point, you know, Wake Forest,
- 45:26Speaker 10: by the way, I don't know if people know this,
- 45:28Speaker 10: 17th ranked team in the country, that would be back-to-back
- 45:32Speaker 10: top 20 wins, assuming those teams win.
- 45:33Speaker 3: To kind of stay in that kind.
- 45:36Speaker 10: Of echelon, which I think, you know, for all we
- 45:40Speaker 10: kind of, there's the wailing and gnashing of teeth earlier
- 45:43Speaker 10: this season when SMU, you know, dropped a game, quite frankly,
- 45:47Speaker 10: that I don't think they should have when they played
- 45:48Speaker 10: poorly at Louisville, right? Well, they can win it all
- 45:52Speaker 10: back and everything's still right there in front of them.
- 45:54Speaker 10: You can make the argument that they still control their destiny. Certainly,
- 45:57Speaker 10: you know, if they were to continue to roll and
- 46:00Speaker 10: play in the ACC championship game, but even then, as
- 46:03Speaker 10: an at-large, you know, that would be a team that,
- 46:05Speaker 10: you know, As a music team, I think early in
- 46:07Speaker 10: the year, we may have been ready to ride off,
- 46:10Speaker 10: but because of the way that the schedule is broken
- 46:12Speaker 10: and with those two big high-profile games late in the season,
- 46:15Speaker 10: that can give them an opportunity to vault back into
- 46:18Speaker 10: that national conversation. Those are two of the monster games
- 46:22Speaker 10: left on the schedule to kind of determine what the
- 46:25Speaker 10: Texas representation may.
- 46:27Speaker 3: Look like in the college football playoff.
- 46:29Speaker 10: Right now, it doesn't look like A & M is
- 46:30Speaker 10: going to be participating. Tech, obviously, looking very good there
- 46:34Speaker 10: in the Big 12. You know, Texas, their season is teetering,
- 46:37Speaker 10: as I know you guys have been talking a lot about.
- 46:39Speaker 10: But two programs that, you know, here in Houston and SMU,
- 46:42Speaker 10: I think have an opportunity to really crash the party.
- 46:45Speaker 1: Talking football in the Lone Star State with Greg Tepper, Editor-in-Chief,
- 46:48Speaker 1: Dave Campbell's Texas Football here on AM 13 Under the Zone.
- 46:51Speaker 1: Let's jump to high school and we'll start off with,
- 46:53Speaker 1: it happened yesterday. The Texas High School Football Hall of
- 46:56Speaker 1: Fame announced its class for 2027. And for folks who
- 46:59Speaker 1: don't know the way this works is they induct a
- 47:03Speaker 1: player from each decade. It starts from 1969 and before.
- 47:09Speaker 1: So that would also include folks even prior to the
- 47:11Speaker 1: decade of the 60s. That enshrining will be Joe Barnes
- 47:15Speaker 1: from Reagan County. Then in the 70s, Doug Dawson from
- 47:18Speaker 1: Houston Memorial and former Texas Longhorn. Richmond Webb. from Roosevelt
- 47:23Speaker 1: High in Dallas and Texas A & M for the 80s.
- 47:26Speaker 1: Casey Hampton, a warm spot in many Longhorn fans' hearts
- 47:30Speaker 1: from Galveston Ball. Chase Daniel from South Lake Carroll, certainly
- 47:34Speaker 1: one of the most decorated recruits coming out of high school,
- 47:37Speaker 1: played at your alma mater, Missouri, and then had a
- 47:40Speaker 1: career as a backup in the NFL, now working college telecast.
- 47:43Speaker 1: Baker Mayfield will go in. Of course, he was the
- 47:46Speaker 1: final quarterback in the drive for five for Lake Travis.
- 47:50Speaker 1: And then you have two coaches. uh john outlaw uh
- 47:54Speaker 1: the late john outlaw from lufkin and johnny tucson from
- 47:56Speaker 1: waco high both definitely deserving and then the dave campbell's
- 48:00Speaker 1: texas um football uh you might say the the major
- 48:05Speaker 1: domo of that your balls adam hockfelder getting in on
- 48:10Speaker 1: the dave campbell contributor to the game induction.
- 48:13Speaker 10: How about that Yeah, you know, the Hall of Fame
- 48:17Speaker 10: has a special place around here at Dave Campbell's Texas football.
- 48:20Speaker 3: You know, Dave Campbell was really instrumental in, I don't
- 48:24Speaker 3: want to overstate it, but in a lot of ways,
- 48:26Speaker 3: he kind.
- 48:26Speaker 10: Of saved the Hall of Fame and kind of floundering
- 48:29Speaker 10: here in the DFW Metropolitan. really kind of rallied the
- 48:33Speaker 10: troops to move it to Waco, to give it the
- 48:37Speaker 10: kind of prominence that needs it. And that's the Texas
- 48:39Speaker 10: Sports Hall of Fame, not just the Texas High School
- 48:41Speaker 10: Football Hall of Fame, although that's obviously a subsidiary of
- 48:43Speaker 10: the Texas Sports Hall of Fame.
- 48:45Speaker 3: And so, you know, obviously that, you know.
- 48:47Speaker 10: The Dave Campbell Contributing to the Game Award is how you, Mr. Way,
- 48:51Speaker 10: are in the Hall of Fame there in Waco. And then,
- 48:54Speaker 10: you know, so I know that means a lot for
- 48:56Speaker 10: Adam to be able to go in there.
- 48:58Speaker 3: And what is the star-studded class, right? You know, you
- 49:00Speaker 3: mentioned Casey Hampton.
- 49:05Speaker 10: Austin was an absolute juggernaut in Galveston, just like a
- 49:10Speaker 10: force of nature in Galveston.
- 49:12Speaker 3: And it's a long time coming, I think, for him
- 49:14Speaker 3: to get in.
- 49:15Speaker 10: You know, Chase Daniel, a guy who, of course, was,
- 49:18Speaker 10: you know, one of those most decorated quarterbacks there in
- 49:22Speaker 10: those early 2000 South Lake Carroll teams under Todd Dodge.
- 49:27Speaker 10: And then, you know, obviously went off and had a
- 49:29Speaker 10: terrific college career. You know, Peter Mayfield, still cooking, still
- 49:33Speaker 10: doing what he's doing there. And obviously part of that
- 49:35Speaker 10: drive for five there at Lake Travis. I would draw
- 49:38Speaker 10: special attention to the two coaches. because you kind of
- 49:40Speaker 10: hit the nail on the head, I think John Outlaw
- 49:41Speaker 10: and Johnny Tusa, this is long overdue for these two guys,
- 49:44Speaker 10: you want to talk about guys who are legends in
- 49:49Speaker 10: their towns, you know, Johnny Tusa there in Waco is
- 49:53Speaker 10: as respected a high school football coach as you may
- 49:55Speaker 10: ever see, and then Don Outlaw out there in Lufkin
- 49:58Speaker 10: is the guy, is the name, you You know, everyone's
- 50:00Speaker 10: trying to be John Howell. Those are the big shoes
- 50:03Speaker 10: to fill.
- 50:03Speaker 3: So it's a special class.
- 50:04Speaker 10: You know, I think the Hall of Fame did a
- 50:06Speaker 10: fantastic job of bringing in an outstanding class worthy of
- 50:11Speaker 10: the Hall of Fame. And the fact that our president
- 50:14Speaker 10: gets to have a small part in it, I think, is.
- 50:16Speaker 3: Pretty special for him.
- 50:17Speaker 1: Yeah, well, and he's been very instrumental in how this
- 50:20Speaker 1: game is going. grown by leaps and bounds in terms
- 50:23Speaker 1: of what's done online, what you and the crew do,
- 50:26Speaker 1: what TexasFootball.com and what he's done also with the crew
- 50:30Speaker 1: in getting all those live telecasts. There's two things that
- 50:34Speaker 1: come to mind with the two coaches going in. Johnny Tusa,
- 50:37Speaker 1: just to let folks know how important he is. We
- 50:40Speaker 1: had Derek Johnson on Sark's radio show a few weeks back.
- 50:44Speaker 1: And DJ, of course, played for Coach Toose at Waco High.
- 50:47Speaker 1: And DJ was an All-American at Texas. He was an
- 50:50Speaker 1: All-Pro with the Chiefs. And he was being inducted into
- 50:53Speaker 1: the Chiefs Ring of Honor. He insisted on flying Coach
- 50:56Speaker 1: Toose and his wife. up to Kansas City to be there.
- 50:59Speaker 1: That's how much he said, I never would have gotten
- 51:02Speaker 1: to the things, I never would have accomplished what I
- 51:04Speaker 1: did at Texas, and I certainly wouldn't have accomplished what
- 51:07Speaker 1: I did at the Chiefs without Coach Tusa. So that
- 51:09Speaker 1: tells you one thing about what Johnny Tusa's done. And
- 51:11Speaker 1: then John Outlaw, I always like to tell the story,
- 51:13Speaker 1: you know, John Outlaw was really good at a lot
- 51:16Speaker 1: of places, including Sherman, and then he gets to Lufkin.
- 51:20Speaker 1: And I'll always remember this, because on opening night of
- 51:26Speaker 1: either his first or second season, I think it was
- 51:27Speaker 1: his first season, they shocked John Tyler, who was, I think,
- 51:31Speaker 1: number one in the state on that Friday night. And
- 51:33Speaker 1: this was before you were on board with us with
- 51:36Speaker 1: the scoreboard live show. So we tried to get him
- 51:39Speaker 1: to go on live with us like you and I
- 51:41Speaker 1: have done so many times in the years with a
- 51:43Speaker 1: winning coach. And we're trying to get him on by phone.
- 51:46Speaker 1: And somebody called him and he answered the phone at
- 51:50Speaker 1: his house. He couldn't get him at the field house.
- 51:52Speaker 1: It was getting kind of late. And they got him
- 51:53Speaker 1: at home and they said, hey, we'd like for you
- 51:56Speaker 1: to come on High School Scoreboard Live with us. And
- 51:59Speaker 1: he said, I'm going to bed. I'm not doing it.
- 52:01Speaker 1: And they said, well, Craig Wade told us to call
- 52:06Speaker 1: you that he'd really like to have you. He goes,
- 52:07Speaker 1: tell Craig I love him. I'm going to bed. Good night.
- 52:11Speaker 1: And I'll always remember that about John. He was that
- 52:14Speaker 1: kind of guy. Great dude off of that. Okay. Now.
- 52:18Speaker 1: Let's get to the game log. Before we have the
- 52:22Speaker 1: technical snafu, I was going to ask you how cataclysmic
- 52:25Speaker 1: a week this could be with some of the selections
- 52:28Speaker 1: on this. Good piece for folks online. If you're not
- 52:32Speaker 1: a subscriber, you can. You can subscribe at TexasFootball.com and
- 52:38Speaker 1: read the piece that Matt Stepp did on Gerald and Stephenville.
- 52:41Speaker 1: We'll find out how for real Gerald is. I think
- 52:44Speaker 1: the computer likes Stephenville by 13. But I want to
- 52:47Speaker 1: ask you about another game. Now, this is not included
- 52:51Speaker 1: in the three games where you have to pick one.
- 52:53Speaker 1: I could have been really mean and done this, but
- 52:56Speaker 1: I like you too much. We're too close, and it
- 52:58Speaker 1: would not have been fair for you to do this.
- 53:01Speaker 1: But I want you to tell me what you know
- 53:04Speaker 1: about Dallas Life Oak Cliff. They're 7-0. They're playing Pilot Point,
- 53:11Speaker 1: who's good, but the computer likes Life Oak Cliff by
- 53:16Speaker 1: four points, I think. And the reason why I ask
- 53:19Speaker 1: you this is because you tell me if you can remember,
- 53:22Speaker 1: I cannot remember in football, I know obviously in basketball,
- 53:26Speaker 1: but in football, I cannot remember a situation where a
- 53:30Speaker 1: charter school was ranked as high as Dallas Life Oak
- 53:33Speaker 1: Cliff is in 3A Division I.
- 53:38Speaker 10: Yeah, look, they're a serious team. You know, Life Oak
- 53:42Speaker 10: Cliff is one of those teams that is absolutely star-studded.
- 53:45Speaker 10: They have a junior quarterback, Cameron Phillips, who is lighting
- 53:49Speaker 10: it up right now. He has got 42 total touchdowns
- 53:52Speaker 10: on the season, already a 2,000-yard passer.
- 53:56Speaker 3: And here's the other thing, though.
- 53:58Speaker 10: The other thing about it, and probably where they're most notable,
- 54:01Speaker 10: is that they had a game earlier this season which
- 54:05Speaker 10: made some headlines about where they played at Bonham. And
- 54:08Speaker 10: Bonham's a proud program. That was, I think, trying to
- 54:12Speaker 10: go out there and kind of get some reps in.
- 54:15Speaker 10: And the game got out of hand. They scored 105 points.
- 54:18Speaker 10: I haven't had a 100-point game in a UIL game in, boy,
- 54:24Speaker 10: since the.
- 54:25Speaker 3: 30s, since the 40s maybe.
- 54:26Speaker 10: It's been a long time. There's just kind of that
- 54:28Speaker 10: understanding that you don't get over there. From what I understand,
- 54:31Speaker 10: the coaches were, I think there was an audible late
- 54:34Speaker 10: and the coaches weren't too pleased with it. And anyway,
- 54:37Speaker 10: I don't, I don't want to point fingers here, but
- 54:38Speaker 10: there's that. That's kind of one of the things that
- 54:41Speaker 10: kind of draws your eyes to them. One of the
- 54:43Speaker 10: things that, that when I look at this, uh, them.
- 54:48Speaker 10: But the thing that I've, you know, in working with
- 54:50Speaker 10: Jerry Forrest, outstanding computer program for a long time, I
- 54:54Speaker 10: can tell you that one of the things the computer
- 54:56Speaker 10: likes is dominance. Well, there have been few teams as
- 54:59Speaker 10: dominant in the state as them. They have an average
- 55:02Speaker 10: margin of victory of 39 points in their games. I
- 55:05Speaker 10: do think that when they play Pilot Point, we'll find
- 55:09Speaker 10: out more about in their next three games than we
- 55:13Speaker 10: have in their previous seven games combined. Because Right now,
- 55:16Speaker 10: their best.
- 55:17Speaker 3: Win of the year is probably over Dallas Christian.
- 55:19Speaker 10: That was also their closest game of the year. And hey,
- 55:21Speaker 10: don't apologize for beating Mike Wheeler, who is one of
- 55:24Speaker 10: the most winningest coaches in Texas high school football history there.
- 55:28Speaker 10: But the next three games are Pilot Point, Gunner, and Pottsboro.
- 55:31Speaker 10: Those will be, in my estimation, the three best teams.
- 55:33Speaker 3: That they have played.
- 55:34Speaker 10: If they come out, if they finish 10-0, I mean,
- 55:37Speaker 10: we got to start having a really serious conversation about
- 55:39Speaker 10: Welton Johnson's ball club. I think right now I'm still
- 55:42Speaker 10: in wait and see mode. And if they go out
- 55:44Speaker 10: there and they beat, if they beat, you know, I'll
- 55:48Speaker 10: point this week, especially on the road, then we're going
- 55:50Speaker 10: to start having a really interesting conversation about how deep
- 55:52Speaker 10: the Lions can go there and create a mission one.
- 55:54Speaker 3: Okay.
- 55:55Speaker 5: All right.
- 55:55Speaker 1: Now to the meanest thing we do every week. I
- 55:58Speaker 1: give you three games. You pick one to transport it.
- 56:00Speaker 1: By the way, which is your game this week?
- 56:02Speaker 3: We have got Duncanville and Waxahachie.
- 56:04Speaker 1: Okay, good, good. All right, so we're recusing you from
- 56:09Speaker 1: that game then. And I was really torn between going
- 56:14Speaker 1: with that game or C.E. King and North Shore. So
- 56:18Speaker 1: you've made the decision for me. All right, C.E. King
- 56:20Speaker 1: and North Shore is one of the games. I'm not
- 56:23Speaker 1: even putting Westlake Lake Travis on there for you because
- 56:26Speaker 1: this roster is so dynamic this weekend. The other two
- 56:31Speaker 1: games I'm going to give you, are, uh, Bremond at
- 56:35Speaker 1: Burton and at the one 81 level, Hermley at defending
- 56:41Speaker 1: state champion, Jaden.
- 56:43Speaker 3: You know what?
- 56:44Speaker 10: I thought you were going to do that. I thought
- 56:46Speaker 10: I was like, man, he's going to throw like a
- 56:47Speaker 10: six man game. Cause this is really, it's by the way,
- 56:49Speaker 10: it's a.
- 56:49Speaker 3: Really nice week in one day, like a really fun week.
- 56:53Speaker 10: Um, and so look, Burton, I think Burton and Bremond
- 56:56Speaker 10: is really flying under the radar. I'm, I'm a big
- 56:59Speaker 10: fan of this Bremond team. Um, what's, able to do,
- 57:02Speaker 10: you know, off to a fantastic start there.
- 57:05Speaker 3: Anytime they've got a coach's kid at.
- 57:07Speaker 10: The quarterback spot, I'm going to be in and they've
- 57:09Speaker 10: got Sam Kazowski running the show there.
- 57:11Speaker 3: He has been electrifying.
- 57:13Speaker 1: For them as the junior.
- 57:14Speaker 5: They run the ball.
- 57:14Speaker 3: They got a running back named Tank Scott. I mean,
- 57:16Speaker 3: that's just fantastic um jayden.
- 57:20Speaker 10: And hermley is going to be a lot of fun
- 57:21Speaker 10: because i think we're going to you know jane is
- 57:23Speaker 10: kind of a known commodity even moving up to 1a
- 57:26Speaker 10: division one they have that that kind of wild last
- 57:29Speaker 10: play loss to newcastle a couple weeks ago but they
- 57:32Speaker 10: are six and one and very good but hermley is
- 57:34Speaker 10: a team i've got my eye on because this is
- 57:36Speaker 10: the real test for them they're undefeated seven 7-0, but
- 57:40Speaker 10: I do think that this is going.
- 57:41Speaker 3: To be the toughest game of.
- 57:42Speaker 10: The year on the road.
- 57:43Speaker 3: We will learn a lot about the Cardinals. My pick
- 57:45Speaker 3: has got to be North Shore, C.E. King, though.
- 57:48Speaker 10: This is, in my estimation, the best game, the game
- 57:50Speaker 10: of the year at Houston so far.
- 57:52Speaker 3: The defending 6A.
- 57:53Speaker 10: Division I state champs, They're in North Shore, the reigning
- 57:56Speaker 10: 6A Division II state runner-up in C.E. King, which has
- 57:59Speaker 10: the fastest man in Texas in Dylan Mitchell at the controls.
- 58:03Speaker 10: And then North Shore has gotten such a dynamic, electrifying
- 58:07Speaker 10: defense led by Deshaun Royal. And this is an east
- 58:10Speaker 10: side rivalry. These two programs are separated by about seven miles.
- 58:14Speaker 10: They don't like each other. And in fact, Aubrey Johnson,
- 58:18Speaker 10: the wide receiver for C.E.
- 58:20Speaker 3: King, last year you may know him as the offensive
- 58:23Speaker 3: MVP of the state championship. championship game for North Shore last.
- 58:26Speaker 10: Year so there's some there's.
- 58:29Speaker 3: Some uh you know some there are.
- 58:32Speaker 10: Gonna be some some chippiness in this game I think
- 58:33Speaker 10: there's gonna be a a highly high octane ball game
- 58:37Speaker 10: and I think it's gonna be a whale of a
- 58:38Speaker 10: game that'll tell us a lot about how region three ends.
- 58:41Speaker 1: Up shaking out are you saying that these teams will
- 58:43Speaker 1: each be in their feelings a little bit on Friday
- 58:45Speaker 1: huh It will be.
- 58:47Speaker 10: An emotional contest. It will be up to these two
- 58:49Speaker 10: outstanding coaching staff to wrangle those emotions.
- 58:52Speaker 1: Which of these two teams has the better chance of
- 58:58Speaker 1: pulling off a surprise? Gerald at home against number one
- 59:02Speaker 1: and defending state champ stevenville or pleasant grove having to
- 59:06Speaker 1: go to carthage.
- 59:08Speaker 10: Uh you know it's interesting both of them i think
- 59:10Speaker 10: are really on the table you know pleasant grove they
- 59:13Speaker 10: had that one loss to gilmer and the concern that
- 59:15Speaker 10: i have for them is that they gave up 300
- 59:18Speaker 10: yards rushing to gilmer well you know this is not
- 59:21Speaker 10: a carthage team that runs the ball as especially well.
- 59:23Speaker 10: They throw the ball really well, Jacob Dixon, J.D. Edwards,
- 59:26Speaker 10: but that kind of plays into the hands of Pleasant Grove,
- 59:29Speaker 10: so if you believe that styles make fights, that's one thing,
- 59:32Speaker 10: although going to Penelope County and getting a win is
- 59:35Speaker 10: probably a lot to ask. One thing I am interested in,
- 59:38Speaker 10: this Gerald Stephenville game, I think, is a live ball.
- 59:42Speaker 1: I really do.
- 59:42Speaker 3: I think Gerald's for real.
- 59:44Speaker 10: Alan Hare is a guy who has been around the block.
- 59:49Speaker 10: He knows how to coach these guys up, and he
- 59:51Speaker 10: has got them cooking right now. Running the ball exceptionally well.
- 59:56Speaker 10: Alan Hare is a guy who you don't want to
- 59:57Speaker 10: see on the other side. And look, when they get
- 59:59Speaker 10: the slot tee going, Stephenville doesn't see a lot of
- 1:00:02Speaker 10: the slot tee. That is primarily a South Texas thing.
- 1:00:06Speaker 10: You know, and Alan Hare has brought that to Gerald,
- 1:00:09Speaker 10: and they are cruising with it right now. A real
- 1:00:12Speaker 10: test for the defense. I think this is a live
- 1:00:15Speaker 10: ball there at Cougar Stadium in Gerald that it would
- 1:00:18Speaker 10: not be surprised if this game.
- 1:00:20Speaker 3: Is tight in the fourth quarter.
- 1:00:21Speaker 1: I'm with you there. He's Greg Tepper, editor-in-chief of Dave
- 1:00:24Speaker 1: Campbell's Texas Football Magazine. Have fun with that Waxhatchee-Dunkerville thing,
- 1:00:27Speaker 1: and we'll do it again next week.
- 1:00:29Speaker 10: All right, looking forward to it, pal.
- 1:00:30Speaker 3: Thanks.
- 1:00:31Speaker 1: All right. That's Greg Tepper from Dave Campbell's Texas Football Magazine.
- 1:00:35Speaker 1: I'm with him on this. I think Coach Hare is
- 1:00:37Speaker 1: an outstanding coach in the way they run the slot
- 1:00:39Speaker 1: tee at Gerald. We'll see if they can hang with Stephenville.
- 1:00:43Speaker 1: It's a tall task, no doubt about it.
- 1:00:45Speaker 3: All right.
- 1:00:46Speaker 1: We have more coming up when we continue on Sports
- 1:00:48Speaker 1: Radio AM 13 Under the Zone and the iHeartRadio app.
- 1:00:51Speaker 1: One of the great cowbell accompaniment songs of the Yacht
- 1:00:54Speaker 1: Rock era there. You're Out to Lose by Pablo Cruz
- 1:00:58Speaker 1: here on 1300 The Zone. Let's hear from a couple
- 1:01:01Speaker 1: of Longhorns. Justin Cryer, the Longhorn linebacker, was asked, when
- 1:01:05Speaker 1: talking about the things they can do to be better,
- 1:01:08Speaker 1: what can they do that he is seeing where they
- 1:01:12Speaker 1: can be better?
- 1:01:13Speaker 11: For the most part, I think that the want to
- 1:01:15Speaker 11: is there for us. I just think that execution-wise... For
- 1:01:21Speaker 11: the most part, we were solid, but we just had
- 1:01:23Speaker 11: to tackle better.
- 1:01:24Speaker 1: We missed way too many tackles that game.
- 1:01:27Speaker 11: And what disappointed for me, this is like a personal thing,
- 1:01:30Speaker 11: is that when I watched the game defensively, when I
- 1:01:33Speaker 11: watched us play, I'm going to feel that we were there.
- 1:01:37Speaker 1: We're out there having fun.
- 1:01:39Speaker 11: And that second half, I just kind of felt that
- 1:01:40Speaker 11: we were a little flat energy-wise.
- 1:01:43Speaker 1: I just didn't feel like we were.
- 1:01:46Speaker 11: like, you know what I mean, when you watch the defense,
- 1:01:47Speaker 11: I mean, like, this Texas defense is, like, you know
- 1:01:49Speaker 11: what I mean, and regardless of if, and I'm not
- 1:01:51Speaker 11: taking anything away from Colin, right, but we're also losing
- 1:01:53Speaker 11: the field, right, Colin got, went down, but that doesn't mean, like, our,
- 1:01:55Speaker 11: our spark, our energy changes, right, we're, I'm saying, we,
- 1:01:58Speaker 11: we're still productive, we're still, we're still a good unit,
- 1:02:00Speaker 11: so I just feel like that was something that I, um,
- 1:02:03Speaker 11: had to talk with the guys about today, was that, like, man, like, that,
- 1:02:07Speaker 11: that third and fourth quarter, like, I, I feel like
- 1:02:09Speaker 11: we were, like, out there having fun and out there
- 1:02:12Speaker 11: kind of flying around a little bit. Again, I don't
- 1:02:14Speaker 11: think our effort wasn't there. I thought we had played
- 1:02:15Speaker 11: with good effort. I thought we executed our calls for
- 1:02:17Speaker 11: the most part. Obviously, some tweaks here and there, but
- 1:02:21Speaker 11: I want to feel that energy and that spark that
- 1:02:23Speaker 11: we've had the first five weeks of the season.
- 1:02:26Speaker 1: Okay, the big question surrounding the defense is the health
- 1:02:29Speaker 1: and the status of Colin Simmons. The first of the
- 1:02:32Speaker 1: SEC student-athlete availability reports comes out this evening, just past
- 1:02:36Speaker 1: 7 o'clock, and that's where we'll probably learn, you know,
- 1:02:41Speaker 1: where Colin Simmons is, and with that high ankle sprain,
- 1:02:44Speaker 1: there's a chance he may be out for a bit.
- 1:02:45Speaker 1: So here O'Connor was asked, what is the mindset of
- 1:02:48Speaker 1: this defense if Simmons is down for a bit?
- 1:02:51Speaker 12: It's next man up mentality, you know. It's cruel in
- 1:02:54Speaker 12: the sport, but, you know, one person goes down, the
- 1:02:56Speaker 12: next person got to step up. And we all know that,
- 1:02:59Speaker 12: you know, every play comes with the risk, you know,
- 1:03:02Speaker 12: of injury or whatever. But, you know, you just got to,
- 1:03:05Speaker 12: you know, move on forward. It's next man up.
- 1:03:08Speaker 1: And that next man could be Richard Wesley, the freshman
- 1:03:11Speaker 1: who has played well at times. So he's asked, what
- 1:03:13Speaker 1: does he like about Wesley?
- 1:03:14Speaker 12: Yeah, Richie, he came in ready to play. Like, he's
- 1:03:17Speaker 12: not one of those guys that, you know, wants to
- 1:03:20Speaker 12: wait around. He came in and attacked it. I think
- 1:03:22Speaker 12: you see it, like, you know, the moment he stepped
- 1:03:24Speaker 12: on campus, he was locked in. He's really locked in on,
- 1:03:27Speaker 12: you know, learning the playbook. That's something young guys usually
- 1:03:29Speaker 12: struggle with the most, and he's totally dialed. I think physically,
- 1:03:34Speaker 12: he's ahead of his time. You know, he's still young.
- 1:03:37Speaker 12: but physically he's so developed. I think he can go
- 1:03:39Speaker 12: out there and really make an impact as well.
- 1:03:41Speaker 5: All right.
- 1:03:41Speaker 1: And again, we'll find out more tonight when the first
- 1:03:44Speaker 1: of those SEC student athlete availability reports are released. We'll
- 1:03:48Speaker 1: be back to wrap up our number two on 13
- 1:03:50Speaker 1: under the zone. Third and final hour of the program
- 1:04:01Speaker 1: here on sports radio. AM 1300 to the zone on
- 1:04:03Speaker 1: a yacht rock Wednesday. Glad to have you with us.
- 1:04:06Speaker 1: Craig way alongside the producer, Jake Herman. We're going to
- 1:04:10Speaker 1: hear a little more from Vic Schaefer and from Sean
- 1:04:12Speaker 1: Miller coming up. And then we brought you some sound
- 1:04:14Speaker 1: earlier in the program, uh, on the eve of two
- 1:04:18Speaker 1: very high profile exhibition games that, that by the way,
- 1:04:23Speaker 1: the Texas women do have an orange white game tonight,
- 1:04:25Speaker 1: scrimmage tonight at Moody center. And, uh, So you'll get
- 1:04:29Speaker 1: a chance to get a look at them at home
- 1:04:33Speaker 1: for the first time. Of course, they have the Monday
- 1:04:35Speaker 1: night exhibition game at UConn, but they will be at
- 1:04:38Speaker 1: home tonight for an orange-white that starts at 6. And then,
- 1:04:43Speaker 1: of course, on Sunday, in the area, not at Moody,
- 1:04:46Speaker 1: but in the area, and in chance for you, I'm
- 1:04:53Speaker 1: not even talking about the season ticket holders because they
- 1:04:55Speaker 1: show up anyway. They're a fabulous fan support. But you
- 1:04:58Speaker 1: folks up in Wilco have a chance to see them
- 1:05:02Speaker 1: right in your backyard because they're going to be at
- 1:05:04Speaker 1: the HEB Center in Cedar Park against none other than
- 1:05:07Speaker 1: the defending national champion, UCLA Bruins. So that's Sunday afternoon
- 1:05:13Speaker 1: at 1 o'clock. You'll hear it. right here on 13
- 1:05:16Speaker 1: Under the Zone, beginning at 1245, the pregame, and the
- 1:05:20Speaker 1: tip-off is at one. The men also play on Sunday,
- 1:05:26Speaker 1: Sunday morning at 11 a.m., and they're going to be
- 1:05:31Speaker 1: in Madison Square Garden in New York playing St. John's.
- 1:05:35Speaker 1: So we'll hear from Sean Miller more on that coming up.
- 1:05:38Speaker 1: We're also going to hear more from Justin Cryer, Longhorns linebacker,
- 1:05:42Speaker 1: and Hiro Kanu, the defense and defensive lineman as well.
- 1:05:48Speaker 1: Other college football notes. I know you weren't necessarily calling
- 1:05:54Speaker 1: for this guy to be removed, but you were predicting
- 1:05:57Speaker 1: it was going to happen, and it has happened. Mike
- 1:05:59Speaker 1: Loxley has been dismissed. Eight years there in Maryland, including
- 1:06:06Speaker 1: a couple of wins over Texas. But He went 39-54
- 1:06:11Speaker 1: with the Terps, but just 10-21 since the start of
- 1:06:16Speaker 1: the 2024 campaign. And they've lost 12 Big Ten games
- 1:06:22Speaker 1: in a row. So, no big surprise there.
- 1:06:25Speaker 7: No, and a little bit surprised that they didn't wait
- 1:06:28Speaker 7: a little bit towards the end of the season. The
- 1:06:30Speaker 7: buyout would have come down significantly. So, that is maybe
- 1:06:35Speaker 7: Maryland just looking for that first mover advantage at the
- 1:06:37Speaker 7: end of the day. It just wasn't an acceptable... product
- 1:06:40Speaker 7: to them on the field this season. You can't lose
- 1:06:44Speaker 7: 12 in a row in any conference. It's very similar,
- 1:06:47Speaker 7: I would say. I don't know if folks will remember this,
- 1:06:49Speaker 7: but it's very similar to the buyout that Texas did
- 1:06:53Speaker 7: with Charlie Strong when they were hiring Tom Herman. And
- 1:06:56Speaker 7: what I mean by that is Charlie's had a deal
- 1:07:00Speaker 7: where they were paying it all unless he got another job,
- 1:07:05Speaker 7: which he did at South Florida, and then it mitigated
- 1:07:07Speaker 7: some of it. In the case of Loxley, they're going
- 1:07:09Speaker 7: to pay it all Regardless of what happens.
- 1:07:12Speaker 2: I wonder if the 2014 playoff has something to do
- 1:07:14Speaker 2: with this decision.
- 1:07:17Speaker 1: That's interesting. I don't know.
- 1:07:19Speaker 2: Probably not.
- 1:07:20Speaker 1: He was set to earn $ 6. 4 million this year. It's
- 1:07:24Speaker 1: a contract that runs through 2028. And he's owed a
- 1:07:28Speaker 1: buyout of $ 9, 750, 000. So there is no offset or mitigation
- 1:07:35Speaker 1: on the deal, which means Maryland will pay all of
- 1:07:37Speaker 1: it even if Loxley lands another job. So Erland was
- 1:07:43Speaker 1: just ready to move on. And they named longtime assistant
- 1:07:47Speaker 1: Azhar Abdul-Rahim as the interim head coach. They say they're
- 1:07:50Speaker 1: beginning a national search for Loxley's replacement. Abdul-Rahim is a Washington, D.C.
- 1:07:56Speaker 1: native and has strong ties to the area, viewed as
- 1:08:01Speaker 1: a key figure in the building to help retain the
- 1:08:03Speaker 1: top talent. Recently promoted defensive coordinator, after Ted Monachino was
- 1:08:12Speaker 1: fired this past Sunday by Loxley. And then Loxley just
- 1:08:16Speaker 1: got fired. So now this guy goes from being assistant
- 1:08:20Speaker 1: to defensive coordinator. Now he's the interim head coach, such as,
- 1:08:25Speaker 1: way of things.
- 1:08:26Speaker 7: Yeah and and such is the the way that you're
- 1:08:29Speaker 7: going to watch that situation unfold maybe he stays on
- 1:08:32Speaker 7: next year as a defensive coordinator that's going to be
- 1:08:34Speaker 7: maybe the first choice that both the administration and the
- 1:08:37Speaker 7: new head coach makes when they get in the building
- 1:08:39Speaker 7: you also got to retain malik washington it's it's it's
- 1:08:42Speaker 7: a talented quarterback yep in college park and you saw
- 1:08:45Speaker 7: the new coaches that have had success this year they've
- 1:08:47Speaker 7: either brought a lot with them or they've retained a
- 1:08:49Speaker 7: lot of good players so we'll see how that pans out.
- 1:08:52Speaker 1: Um Maryland's defense, and like you said, we'll see if
- 1:08:55Speaker 1: they retain him as defensive coordinator. He was not the
- 1:08:59Speaker 1: defensive coordinator. for this defense that has given up 219
- 1:09:05Speaker 1: points in its current five game losing streak um the
- 1:09:09Speaker 1: turps ranked 133rd nationally in points allowed at 33.3 per
- 1:09:12Speaker 1: game and 83rd in yards allowed um They went back
- 1:09:19Speaker 1: to back four and eight the last two years. So anyway.
- 1:09:22Speaker 7: Yeah, those four are the non-conference cream puffs that they
- 1:09:26Speaker 7: scheduled too.
- 1:09:26Speaker 2: It hadn't been pretty.
- 1:09:27Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 1:09:28Speaker 1: So anyway, there's the deal for that. Here was something
- 1:09:33Speaker 1: else I was going to get to yesterday. We really
- 1:09:34Speaker 1: didn't have an awful lot of time to do it
- 1:09:37Speaker 1: because we were out at Boulevard Social. And again, you
- 1:09:41Speaker 1: heard us talk about yesterday. It was great to be
- 1:09:43Speaker 1: out there. Great people. Linda and I stuck around and
- 1:09:45Speaker 1: had that. Big old cheeseburger they have. In fact, we
- 1:09:49Speaker 1: even split it. It was so big. And it was
- 1:09:53Speaker 1: really good. I mean, all the stuff. You know, you
- 1:09:56Speaker 1: heard Mark Henry raving about the wings. And the seasoned
- 1:09:59Speaker 1: fries were real good. And all kinds of things. Anyway,
- 1:10:02Speaker 1: it's there at 6215 North Lamar. And a good place
- 1:10:07Speaker 1: to be. And by the way, if you're a WWE fan,
- 1:10:11Speaker 1: they do watch parties there.
- 1:10:13Speaker 3: So.
- 1:10:14Speaker 1: Just something to keep in mind off of that. Okay,
- 1:10:16Speaker 1: as I started to say, because we didn't have an
- 1:10:19Speaker 1: awful lot of time to get into this, for those
- 1:10:24Speaker 1: who have certainly complained about the Texas offense and saying
- 1:10:33Speaker 1: that Steve Sarkeesian needs to bring in an offensive coordinator,
- 1:10:37Speaker 1: and like I've said all along, no matter how you
- 1:10:39Speaker 1: feel about that, that's not going to happen in the
- 1:10:42Speaker 1: middle of the season. It just won't. if there's any
- 1:10:45Speaker 1: decision on that, that would come after the season. Same
- 1:10:48Speaker 1: thing with the play calling. Not going to turn that
- 1:10:50Speaker 1: over in the middle of the season or exactly at
- 1:10:52Speaker 1: the midway point of the season. The reason why I
- 1:10:54Speaker 1: bring this up is because the heat has turned up
- 1:10:58Speaker 1: in Norman, Oklahoma on Ben Arbuckle. You know, the Sooners,
- 1:11:01Speaker 1: of course, you know, had the one offensive touchdown and
- 1:11:08Speaker 1: then they had the defensive touchdown and they had the
- 1:11:13Speaker 1: blocked punt. against Texas. And then last week, they had
- 1:11:17Speaker 1: one touchdown. It was one and two field goals, or
- 1:11:21Speaker 1: was it a missed two-point try in the loss to Kentucky?
- 1:11:24Speaker 1: In any event, they lost 21-13 to Kentucky. So more
- 1:11:31Speaker 1: scrutiny has come up on that. Well, Tuesday is the
- 1:11:34Speaker 1: day where Brent Venables has his weekly news conference. And
- 1:11:42Speaker 1: he was asked point blank about Ben Arbuckle and his
- 1:11:45Speaker 1: offensive coordinator. He's in his fourth year. And in his
- 1:11:47Speaker 1: fourth year with John Mateer, going back to Washington State.
- 1:11:51Speaker 1: So he's been, according to Venables, his job is not
- 1:11:58Speaker 1: in jeopardy. He's fine. And Arbuckle was made available to
- 1:12:02Speaker 1: the media yesterday. And he was talking about Mateer. He
- 1:12:05Speaker 1: said everything that he's done, the player that he is,
- 1:12:07Speaker 1: the preparation that he has, we believe that John Mateer
- 1:12:09Speaker 1: gives us the best chance to win. Because in Oklahoma
- 1:12:13Speaker 1: right now, they're doing what some folks in these parts
- 1:12:15Speaker 1: are doing, are calling for the backup quarterback, which is
- 1:12:19Speaker 1: a normal fan reaction and, in some cases, in some places,
- 1:12:24Speaker 1: the fashionable thing to do when things aren't going well.
- 1:12:27Speaker 1: But Arbuckle says he gives us the best chance to win.
- 1:12:31Speaker 1: Not Bo Bentley, the freshman. So, anyway, there's that kind
- 1:12:36Speaker 1: of thing. So, So that's going on.
- 1:12:37Speaker 7: Still can't run it. I mean, 31 carries, 76 yards,
- 1:12:41Speaker 7: two and a half yards per carry, longest run of
- 1:12:43Speaker 7: 11 yards.
- 1:12:44Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 1:12:44Speaker 1: So it's a big deal. So anyway, there's a couple
- 1:12:46Speaker 1: of college football headlines. And like I said, coming up
- 1:12:49Speaker 1: here in a few minutes, we're going to hear from
- 1:12:55Speaker 1: Brady Quinn on the Fox telecast. It was from a
- 1:12:59Speaker 1: segment on Colin Coward's show. And it's all college football.
- 1:13:04Speaker 1: His thoughts on Texas football. and Arch Manning, his thoughts
- 1:13:08Speaker 1: on Notre Dame, Miami, Ohio State, and the 24-team impending
- 1:13:16Speaker 1: announcement we're expecting here at some point of the doubling
- 1:13:20Speaker 1: of the college football playoff field from 12 teams to 24.
- 1:13:23Speaker 1: It's a really good segment. That's why I wanted folks
- 1:13:25Speaker 1: who might have missed it when Colin Cowherd had him
- 1:13:28Speaker 1: on just past noon to have a shot to hear
- 1:13:30Speaker 1: it as you're getting in your cars to drive home
- 1:13:31Speaker 1: or whatever. So that's coming up in a few minutes.
- 1:13:33Speaker 1: Let me go to basketball. Vic Schaefer. getting his team
- 1:13:37Speaker 1: ready for this matchup with UCLA, and asked, you know,
- 1:13:42Speaker 1: will we start seeing more of these high-profile exhibition games
- 1:13:46Speaker 1: like the game at UConn and like this one now?
- 1:13:48Speaker 1: Is that becoming the norm?
- 1:13:50Speaker 3: I do.
- 1:13:52Speaker 4: You're going to see it not just in exhibitions. You're
- 1:13:54Speaker 4: going to see it in the schedule, in the non-conference part.
- 1:13:57Speaker 4: And it's going to be on neutral floors because, you know,
- 1:14:02Speaker 4: this was an NIL opportunity. Next year, when they come
- 1:14:06Speaker 4: back to Austin, it'll be an NIL opportunity. We're playing
- 1:14:09Speaker 4: UCLA in Austin Sunday. That's an NIL opportunity. And then
- 1:14:14Speaker 4: I've got two games in Dickies Arena in Fort Worth
- 1:14:17Speaker 4: that are both NIL opportunities.
- 1:14:20Speaker 5: And then I've got the Players' Era. That's NIL opportunity. Now,
- 1:14:25Speaker 5: that's a lot.
- 1:14:26Speaker 4: And if you knew who was trying to get me
- 1:14:27Speaker 4: to play next year in another event that'll have six.
- 1:14:31Speaker 5: Monsters in it, I mean, it's really.
- 1:14:35Speaker 4: for me, it is not much fun trying to figure
- 1:14:40Speaker 4: it out, but I got to do it for my kids. Like,
- 1:14:42Speaker 4: I'm not going to not do something just because it
- 1:14:45Speaker 4: might be a little harder if it's going to benefit them. So,
- 1:14:49Speaker 4: but that's what's on the horizon in women's basketball. There's
- 1:14:52Speaker 4: going to be more and more of these events on
- 1:14:55Speaker 4: neutral floors that benefit these kids for NIL opportunities. And so,
- 1:15:01Speaker 4: Here's the bad thing. It affects your home non-conference schedule. Yeah,
- 1:15:06Speaker 4: I got a great conference schedule at home. We play
- 1:15:09Speaker 4: in the SEC. But for a team that doesn't play
- 1:15:12Speaker 4: the University of's, and now you're taking their opportunity to
- 1:15:17Speaker 4: play a University of in a non-conference game, for me,
- 1:15:23Speaker 4: I'm losing six home games. I could potentially lose six
- 1:15:26Speaker 4: home games next year in my non-conference schedule. My fans,
- 1:15:30Speaker 4: I mean, we just, sold out of season tickets for
- 1:15:32Speaker 4: the first time ever in the history of Texas women's basketball.
- 1:15:35Speaker 4: Wrap your head around that. So I'm so proud about that.
- 1:15:39Speaker 4: But at the same time, if it's not for the
- 1:15:42Speaker 4: SEC-ACC challenge, which next year will be on the road,
- 1:15:48Speaker 4: my non-conference schedule, probably my fans are going to look
- 1:15:50Speaker 4: at it and go, hmm. And you know what my
- 1:15:52Speaker 4: answer is going to be? You ain't coming to watch
- 1:15:54Speaker 4: who I'm playing. You're coming to watch Texas play. That's
- 1:15:58Speaker 4: the answer. You're coming to watch our kids, not who
- 1:16:02Speaker 4: we're playing against. So we'll have plenty of names once
- 1:16:05Speaker 4: we get to January and February. But this is where
- 1:16:07Speaker 4: our game is, y'all. And this is where it's growing to. Hey,
- 1:16:13Speaker 4: I told my administration the other day, you want to
- 1:16:16Speaker 4: give me the money that I'm going to make in
- 1:16:18Speaker 4: those six games next year potentially?
- 1:16:21Speaker 1: Hey, I'll stay at home. No problem.
- 1:16:24Speaker 4: But I just don't think that's probable. And so this
- 1:16:28Speaker 4: is where we are in our game of women's basketball.
- 1:16:31Speaker 4: And so great opportunities to play great name teams, University
- 1:16:34Speaker 4: of's on a neutral floor. But it takes away from
- 1:16:38Speaker 4: your home schedule a little bit in non-conference.
- 1:16:42Speaker 1: And then hearing from Sean Miller. They had the whole
- 1:16:47Speaker 1: high-profile exhibition game Sunday morning with 11 a.m. tip-off at
- 1:16:51Speaker 1: Madison Square Garden against St.
- 1:16:53Speaker 7: John's.
- 1:16:53Speaker 1: And Sean was asked, How do you balance playing smart
- 1:16:57Speaker 1: and physical, given that it is an exhibition, but you
- 1:17:00Speaker 1: want to see what you need to see when you
- 1:17:02Speaker 1: take on a really good St. John's team?
- 1:17:04Speaker 9: A year ago, Michigan played St. John's in the same game,
- 1:17:08Speaker 9: maybe on the same date. And I think that Michigan,
- 1:17:13Speaker 9: not because they won a national championship, but I think
- 1:17:15Speaker 9: if you spoke to their team, their coaches, which I
- 1:17:18Speaker 9: have spoken to them, they got so much out of
- 1:17:21Speaker 9: that experience for the reason you're talking about. When you
- 1:17:24Speaker 9: play against St. John's, man, it's like going into the
- 1:17:26Speaker 9: athletic crucible. I mean, you have to have some toughness.
- 1:17:31Speaker 9: I mean, you have to have the ability to get open.
- 1:17:33Speaker 9: You have to play through contact. You have to play
- 1:17:35Speaker 9: full court. You have to play through exhaustion. When a
- 1:17:38Speaker 9: shot goes up, there'll be no team that will try
- 1:17:41Speaker 9: to get second shots more than St.
- 1:17:44Speaker 1: John's.
- 1:17:45Speaker 9: They are relentless in terms of their effort level. And
- 1:17:48Speaker 9: it comes in waves throughout a 40-minute cycle. Being able
- 1:17:51Speaker 9: to play in the garden, It was a great experience
- 1:17:55Speaker 9: for all of our players. I'm really grateful that we
- 1:17:58Speaker 9: have a chance to give them that opportunity.
- 1:18:00Speaker 5: And the trip itself, playing a true road game.
- 1:18:03Speaker 9: All of those first-time things, it's how I started off
- 1:18:06Speaker 9: here today, where I wish we'd been through it a
- 1:18:09Speaker 9: second time, a third time, where five of our seven
- 1:18:12Speaker 9: have played a year ago for our team. That's not
- 1:18:15Speaker 9: our advantage. Our advantage, I think, comes with our talent
- 1:18:19Speaker 9: level and our depth. But this experience is something that
- 1:18:21Speaker 9: you really feel like every time that we do something,
- 1:18:24Speaker 9: we have to gain from it. And I believe that
- 1:18:27Speaker 9: this experience will really help us in a lot of ways.
- 1:18:30Speaker 5: We'll learn a lot about our team as well.
- 1:18:34Speaker 1: So, obviously, those are two high-profile games that are just
- 1:18:40Speaker 1: exhibitions to be high-profile. Gives you a chance to kind
- 1:18:43Speaker 1: of measure yourself a little bit and see where you
- 1:18:44Speaker 1: are with things.
- 1:18:45Speaker 3: All right.
- 1:18:47Speaker 1: Coming up, again, a deep dive into college.
- 1:18:50Speaker 3: Football.
- 1:18:50Speaker 1: Brady Quinn from Fox joining Colin Cowher, and we'll have
- 1:18:53Speaker 1: that for you. Coming up next on Sports Radio AM,
- 1:18:55Speaker 1: 1300 The Zone and the iHeartRadio app. You know, one
- 1:19:00Speaker 1: thing Longhorn fans do not want to get used to
- 1:19:02Speaker 1: the offense struggling. So hopefully that flips as well. This
- 1:19:06Speaker 1: is getting used to it from Roger Viduras on the
- 1:19:10Speaker 1: Yacht Rock Wednesday. Let's hear about college football, about Texas,
- 1:19:16Speaker 1: about Ohio State, about Notre Dame, Miami, the playoff, all
- 1:19:20Speaker 1: that kind of stuff. Earlier today on The Herd with
- 1:19:24Speaker 1: Colin Cowherd, Brady Quinn, former Notre Dame quarterback, seven years
- 1:19:29Speaker 1: in the NFL, was on with... Colin Cowherd, and he
- 1:19:36Speaker 1: talked about a lot of things, including what he saw
- 1:19:41Speaker 1: in some of the crazy stuff that happened over the
- 1:19:43Speaker 1: previous completed college football weekend. Let's start with that because
- 1:19:47Speaker 1: there's so many unbelievable topics in college football. I mean,
- 1:19:50Speaker 1: I got eight of them here.
- 1:19:50Speaker 2: They're all great.
- 1:19:52Speaker 6: Maybe the best weekend I've ever seen in college football.
- 1:19:55Speaker 6: So my eyes, you played the position, my eyes told
- 1:19:58Speaker 6: me that Tommy Carr was just, hey, listen, I can
- 1:20:01Speaker 6: do the stuff the coaches want.
- 1:20:02Speaker 3: Me to do.
- 1:20:03Speaker 2: It may not have a huge ceiling. Maybe it does.
- 1:20:06Speaker 6: That's what my eyes told me. You played the position.
- 1:20:08Speaker 6: What did Tommy Carr do that impressed you?
- 1:20:12Speaker 13: He just operated within the offense right from the jump
- 1:20:15Speaker 13: when he got inserted in in the very beginning of
- 1:20:18Speaker 13: the first half, or second half, excuse me, of this
- 1:20:20Speaker 13: past week's game. I mean, there's a couple things that
- 1:20:23Speaker 13: really stood out to me. He only threw the football
- 1:20:25Speaker 13: eight times in this game in the second half. However,
- 1:20:28Speaker 13: They started off the second half of them throwing an
- 1:20:29Speaker 13: RPO over the middle. Typically, coaches don't want to put,
- 1:20:33Speaker 13: especially an inexperienced young quarterback in that position, throwing the
- 1:20:35Speaker 13: football over the middle, because that's where the interceptions comes.
- 1:20:38Speaker 13: The tips, the overthrows, things.
- 1:20:39Speaker 8: Of that nature. If there's a strike to JJ Buchanan,
- 1:20:42Speaker 8: then they're off.
- 1:20:42Speaker 13: And then the next, on the third down, he throws
- 1:20:44Speaker 13: a nice little sprint out, completion to Andrew Marci. If
- 1:20:47Speaker 13: he just ran upfield, trusted his feet, probably would have
- 1:20:49Speaker 13: gotten the first down, didn't. But even a flea flicker
- 1:20:51Speaker 13: then later on. So it's an assortment of plays that
- 1:20:54Speaker 13: they're basically saying, this young man's capable, even though he
- 1:20:57Speaker 13: doesn't have the reps, of doing all these things we're
- 1:21:00Speaker 13: asking of him. And then you go look at the 22,
- 1:21:03Speaker 13: 23-yard scamper he had for a touchdown, and it's like,
- 1:21:05Speaker 13: oh yeah, he's got that dual threat ability to running
- 1:21:08Speaker 13: the football. So it's no surprise that, you know, interjecting
- 1:21:11Speaker 13: a different quarterback in there who I think did a
- 1:21:13Speaker 13: better job with some of the run reads, but also
- 1:21:16Speaker 13: the reads in the passing plays helped open up an
- 1:21:19Speaker 13: offense for over 220 yards and 21 points in a
- 1:21:21Speaker 13: comeback victory. Now, it's a different challenge this week versus
- 1:21:24Speaker 13: Indiana with as much pressure as they like to bring.
- 1:21:26Speaker 13: And there was one play in particular where I'm not
- 1:21:28Speaker 13: even sure he saw the corner cap, the corner blitz pressure,
- 1:21:31Speaker 13: but the opposite line, the running back did a good
- 1:21:33Speaker 13: job picking it up. He's going to get a heavy
- 1:21:35Speaker 13: dose of that versus Indiana. They're typically a team that
- 1:21:37Speaker 13: doesn't like to bring a lot of pressure, But they
- 1:21:39Speaker 13: have the past couple of weeks turning it up. And
- 1:21:41Speaker 13: I would imagine they're going to test him often with
- 1:21:44Speaker 13: his eyes and what he's seeing out there, given his inexperience.
- 1:21:47Speaker 6: Brady Quinn joining us for the radio audience. So, I mean,
- 1:21:51Speaker 6: there was an article the other day that said, and
- 1:21:53Speaker 6: I like Sark. I feel like I've watched Sark coach
- 1:21:56Speaker 6: for so long. He's never been... He does the big
- 1:21:59Speaker 6: stuff well. Sometimes on the details, he drives me nuts.
- 1:22:01Speaker 6: I feel like all SART games kind of look the same.
- 1:22:03Speaker 6: They have a great half, a bad half. You know,
- 1:22:05Speaker 6: they do some things brilliantly like recruiting and flash. And
- 1:22:09Speaker 6: then some of the other stuff, I'm like, it shouldn't
- 1:22:12Speaker 6: be this hard. But everybody was saying, well, Arch Manning,
- 1:22:14Speaker 6: when are we going to get the best Arch Manning?
- 1:22:16Speaker 6: When are we going to see this graduation to an
- 1:22:18Speaker 6: X class?
- 1:22:19Speaker 1: And I'm like, folks, stuff's hard.
- 1:22:21Speaker 6: And maybe this is what he is, that he doesn't
- 1:22:24Speaker 6: see the field brilliantly. He doesn't see it like Brock Purdy.
- 1:22:27Speaker 6: Some guys see it.
- 1:22:28Speaker 8: Some don't.
- 1:22:29Speaker 2: That he's super athletic.
- 1:22:30Speaker 6: He's got good traits. He's a big, strong kid. He's
- 1:22:33Speaker 6: got the Manning family. But it is possible that there,
- 1:22:35Speaker 6: you know this, there's an it factor. They're seeing the field.
- 1:22:39Speaker 6: Maybe he was a little overvalued, dominating a smaller Louisiana
- 1:22:43Speaker 6: high school. Or am I wrong that there is this
- 1:22:45Speaker 6: massive ceiling? He's going to hit it.
- 1:22:48Speaker 2: Or my take is maybe he's just this is kind.
- 1:22:51Speaker 6: Of what he is, which is he doesn't see the
- 1:22:55Speaker 6: field quite as quickly in process. Herbert's got some of
- 1:22:58Speaker 6: this that maybe as he as other guys do.
- 1:23:01Speaker 2: Is it possible?
- 1:23:01Speaker 3: That's it.
- 1:23:03Speaker 13: Well, look, everyone's going to process at a different rate.
- 1:23:06Speaker 13: And that comes down to the individual. And that's something
- 1:23:08Speaker 13: that we don't quite have the ability to measure yet.
- 1:23:11Speaker 13: You can kind of tell based on their decision-making and
- 1:23:13Speaker 13: on film. But you referenced Brock Purdy. That's a guy
- 1:23:16Speaker 13: who played a lot of football during his time at
- 1:23:18Speaker 13: Iowa State. And he fell into a position where I
- 1:23:20Speaker 13: don't know that he could have fallen to a better team,
- 1:23:22Speaker 13: a better coach and offensive line than Kyle Shanahan. And
- 1:23:25Speaker 13: you mentioned something in asking the question, talking about details.
- 1:23:29Speaker 13: If there's something that I'm concerned the most about this
- 1:23:32Speaker 13: Texas offense, it is the details. It's the fact that
- 1:23:34Speaker 13: their offensive line plays incredibly inconsistent, not only in pass throw,
- 1:23:38Speaker 13: but also in one block. I mean, you see them
- 1:23:40Speaker 13: turning guys free from time to time. You'd never see
- 1:23:42Speaker 13: an offensive line that should be one of those dominant
- 1:23:44Speaker 13: college football really highlighted in that way. To me, it
- 1:23:48Speaker 13: starts up front with them in the trenches offensively. Then
- 1:23:51Speaker 13: you go back to the wide receiver group where there's
- 1:23:53Speaker 13: not a ton of separation, which to me doesn't fall
- 1:23:56Speaker 13: necessarily always on Wingo and Cam Coleman, two of the
- 1:23:58Speaker 13: top receivers.
- 1:23:59Speaker 8: It's somewhat of a scheme, too.
- 1:24:01Speaker 13: It feels like when you're out there, you don't have
- 1:24:03Speaker 13: plays building off of one another, where they're showing you
- 1:24:06Speaker 13: the same formation, the same personnel grouping, and doing multiple
- 1:24:09Speaker 13: things out of that. to keep a defense on their toes.
- 1:24:11Speaker 13: You know, that's, to me, good offensive scheme and good
- 1:24:14Speaker 13: offensive football. And so all these things add up to
- 1:24:16Speaker 13: make it even more difficult for Archstead to make plays.
- 1:24:19Speaker 8: And then when he has made plays this year, some
- 1:24:22Speaker 8: of that stuff has backfired.
- 1:24:23Speaker 13: I mean, I go back to the Cam Coleman catch
- 1:24:25Speaker 13: where he beat his defender by five yards downfield. He dives, catches,
- 1:24:28Speaker 13: and all of a sudden the ball gets tipped up
- 1:24:30Speaker 13: into being an interception. You know, Ryan Wingo dropped a
- 1:24:32Speaker 13: touchdown pass in that game. They were fortunate to come
- 1:24:35Speaker 13: back in that game. But all that stuff ends up
- 1:24:37Speaker 13: adding up to being thrown on Arch Manning's shoulders. So
- 1:24:39Speaker 13: has he played perfect this year?
- 1:24:41Speaker 3: No.
- 1:24:42Speaker 8: No quarterback has.
- 1:24:43Speaker 13: You know, I don't know, maybe outside of maybe you
- 1:24:44Speaker 13: say Darian Mensah, who from start to finish had a.
- 1:24:47Speaker 8: Really solid, consistent season.
- 1:24:50Speaker 3: All of these.
- 1:24:50Speaker 8: Quarterbacks have had their ups and downs. And this has
- 1:24:52Speaker 8: always been the case.
- 1:24:53Speaker 13: I mean, the fact that we're making such a big
- 1:24:55Speaker 13: deal about it only speaks to, I think, A, what
- 1:24:58Speaker 13: his ceiling may be, but also the fact of what
- 1:25:00Speaker 13: the expectations were, not only for Arch, but also for Texas.
- 1:25:03Speaker 13: And then it feels like it's more disappointing for Texas
- 1:25:05Speaker 13: as a whole than anything else. I'll leave you on
- 1:25:08Speaker 13: this on this topic. Last year, too, we'd kind of
- 1:25:10Speaker 13: written Arch off after the first half of the season. Well,
- 1:25:13Speaker 13: we're halfway through now. And the problem was is everyone
- 1:25:15Speaker 13: stopped watching. And Arch played phenomenal the second half of
- 1:25:18Speaker 13: the season. So that's where we're at now. I'm not
- 1:25:21Speaker 13: throwing in the towel on Texas or on Arch Manning.
- 1:25:23Speaker 13: They've got some things to improve on and fix, but
- 1:25:25Speaker 13: it's not just him. It's everyone who's a part of
- 1:25:27Speaker 13: this offense. They need to find their identity. They need
- 1:25:30Speaker 13: to hammer back down on the details. They need to
- 1:25:31Speaker 13: get better up front and also run the football and
- 1:25:34Speaker 13: take some of the pressure.
- 1:25:34Speaker 1: Off of them.
- 1:25:37Speaker 2: Listen, I didn't like the calls at the end of
- 1:25:39Speaker 2: the game. I thought Notre Dame got cut off.
- 1:25:42Speaker 1: Homered twice.
- 1:25:43Speaker 6: Be that as it may, they didn't play great. They
- 1:25:46Speaker 6: blew some red zone opportunities on third down. They did
- 1:25:48Speaker 6: not play Notre Dame football. I saw criticism yesterday or
- 1:25:51Speaker 6: the day before. People were saying, you know, they lose
- 1:25:56Speaker 6: a lot of close games to good teams, and they
- 1:25:58Speaker 6: beat up, because of their schedule, half a member of
- 1:26:00Speaker 6: a conference on a lot of average teams. And first
- 1:26:03Speaker 6: of all, everybody loses close games to good teams. Ryan,
- 1:26:05Speaker 6: they does.
- 1:26:07Speaker 1: They all do.
- 1:26:08Speaker 6: I like where Notre Dame's at. But I do think
- 1:26:11Speaker 6: now with super conferences, SEC and Big Ten, nobody wants
- 1:26:15Speaker 6: to play these out-of-conference games.
- 1:26:16Speaker 2: Nobody wants to play Notre Dame.
- 1:26:18Speaker 6: They're getting on the phone and people are like, I
- 1:26:20Speaker 6: got to play Texas, Oklahoma, and the SEC now.
- 1:26:22Speaker 2: I'm not playing Notre Dame.
- 1:26:23Speaker 1: I'm not going to South Bend in November. Forget it.
- 1:26:25Speaker 6: So it's a weird spot. That's why I think 2014 playoffs,
- 1:26:28Speaker 6: good for them. Where are you on Notre Dame? I
- 1:26:31Speaker 6: still think Notre Dame can play for the title.
- 1:26:33Speaker 1: I still do.
- 1:26:33Speaker 6: They're good at key positions, corner, quarterback, coach. I think
- 1:26:38Speaker 6: winning in Pro Bowl is hard. BYU's got NIL money.
- 1:26:42Speaker 6: They got NFL guys. I don't think we think of BYU.
- 1:26:47Speaker 6: I watched BYU, Notre Dame, Brady. They look pretty even.
- 1:26:51Speaker 6: They were both big. I don't think it's that punitive
- 1:26:55Speaker 6: of a loss, but because of their schedule, it is.
- 1:26:58Speaker 2: Where do you land today? Where are they going forward?
- 1:27:03Speaker 13: Well, I definitely think they have the chance to still
- 1:27:04Speaker 13: win a national championship. They're that talented and that's their ceiling.
- 1:27:08Speaker 13: The problem is there's no room for error. And we
- 1:27:10Speaker 13: saw that after last year dropping their first two games
- 1:27:12Speaker 13: of the season, running the table, but 10-2 wasn't good enough.
- 1:27:15Speaker 13: And I think that's the concern here is it all
- 1:27:17Speaker 13: comes down to the Miami game. Assuming they win the
- 1:27:19Speaker 13: rest of their games, you know, they really need to
- 1:27:21Speaker 13: be 11-1. They really need that win, I think, for
- 1:27:24Speaker 13: their strength of schedule and to prove to everyone out
- 1:27:26Speaker 13: there that they deserve to be a part of the playoff.
- 1:27:28Speaker 13: I think if you lose that game or if you
- 1:27:30Speaker 13: were to drop a game to SMU or someone else
- 1:27:32Speaker 13: along the way, you then once again leave it up
- 1:27:34Speaker 13: to the college football playoff committee and you might find
- 1:27:37Speaker 13: yourself on the outside looking in.
- 1:27:38Speaker 8: And so this past week's.
- 1:27:40Speaker 13: Game, we can talk about the calls and officiating and
- 1:27:43Speaker 13: why there should be more of a push for a
- 1:27:45Speaker 13: national officiating group instead of doing it by conference.
- 1:27:48Speaker 8: I have no idea how.
- 1:27:49Speaker 13: we've come to an agreement on an expanded 2014 playoff
- 1:27:53Speaker 13: and how we're going to play for a national championship
- 1:27:55Speaker 13: but we still have officials by conference it just it
- 1:27:57Speaker 13: doesn't make any sense to me we should bring it
- 1:28:00Speaker 13: all in-house all under one umbrella for replay everything else
- 1:28:03Speaker 13: so everyone's understanding how we're trying to implement whatever changes
- 1:28:06Speaker 13: it is whatever calls we're doing this year it's all
- 1:28:09Speaker 13: under the same roof that that to me would be a.
- 1:28:10Speaker 8: Great step for all college football last.
- 1:28:13Speaker 13: Week that what was disappointing was this is a team
- 1:28:15Speaker 13: that was a 10 point favorite on the road and
- 1:28:18Speaker 13: so i expectations for this team that in a big
- 1:28:21Speaker 13: game got off to a slow start they didn't look
- 1:28:23Speaker 13: good offensively cj car didn't play his best game he
- 1:28:26Speaker 13: he still showed me flashes of why i think he's
- 1:28:28Speaker 13: the best quarterback in college football because a couple throws
- 1:28:30Speaker 13: he made down the stretch that i mean there's no
- 1:28:33Speaker 13: one else who's going to make those throws as accurate.
- 1:28:35Speaker 8: But he was off. He missed a few throws. He
- 1:28:38Speaker 8: has some mistakes along the game, but so did everyone.
- 1:28:40Speaker 13: I mean, the coaching staff, so the play calling. You
- 1:28:42Speaker 13: can look at Chris Ash and his resistance to wanting
- 1:28:45Speaker 13: to play more man-to-man versus a team that.
- 1:28:47Speaker 8: I think you'd match up with very well.
- 1:28:50Speaker 13: And I understand you lost your best edge rusher to
- 1:28:52Speaker 13: start the game, and that can kind of be a
- 1:28:53Speaker 13: shock to the system.
- 1:28:54Speaker 8: But that was a very winnable game.
- 1:28:56Speaker 13: I mean, you had a botched punt, you had a
- 1:28:57Speaker 13: fake punt, which was an awful call in the backed-up territory,
- 1:29:00Speaker 13: and you couldn't take advantage of it in the red zone.
- 1:29:02Speaker 13: So Notre Dame should look nowhere else but in the
- 1:29:05Speaker 13: mirror and try to pick up the pieces, make the
- 1:29:07Speaker 13: fixes they need to make, because they aren't capable of
- 1:29:09Speaker 13: winning at all. They have the advantage of getting home
- 1:29:11Speaker 13: field versus Miami, but you can't afford to lose it.
- 1:29:14Speaker 13: I mean, you can make the case they're in the
- 1:29:15Speaker 13: playoff now. Every single week, they've got to win, and
- 1:29:18Speaker 13: they've got to be able to advance into the playoff.
- 1:29:21Speaker 6: You know, the NIL is interesting. So I think it's
- 1:29:24Speaker 6: hurt the depth of the Georges and Ohio States. A
- 1:29:26Speaker 6: prime example that Ohio State once won a natty with
- 1:29:29Speaker 6: Cardell Jones. Well, Cardell Jones would not be on their
- 1:29:32Speaker 6: roster anymore because somebody like Oregon State would go say,
- 1:29:35Speaker 6: here's money.
- 1:29:36Speaker 2: You don't have a great third quarterback. That's not at
- 1:29:39Speaker 2: least an experienced one.
- 1:29:40Speaker 6: And so, you know, they've won titles with Craig Krenzel
- 1:29:43Speaker 6: and Cardell Jones. But the Cardell Jones guys that are
- 1:29:47Speaker 6: talented backups now, they want to start and they're going
- 1:29:49Speaker 6: to play and they're.
- 1:29:50Speaker 3: Going to leave.
- 1:29:51Speaker 6: And so to me, when you lose Julian San, my
- 1:29:53Speaker 6: take is they're not going to win. They're out of
- 1:29:56Speaker 6: the national championship. There's too many good quarterbacks. Notre Dame, Miami,
- 1:30:01Speaker 6: there's too many good quarterbacks on good teams. I look
- 1:30:04Speaker 6: at Ohio State and I'm like, Brady, NIL, you got
- 1:30:08Speaker 6: to play a three-star freshman. I don't even think Ohio
- 1:30:11Speaker 6: State can win a natty now. I don't think it's possible.
- 1:30:13Speaker 10: Do you?
- 1:30:15Speaker 13: I think it's still possible. I mean, you referenced us
- 1:30:17Speaker 13: this season. They did it in 2014 with Urban Meyer.
- 1:30:19Speaker 13: They didn't have to go quite as long into the
- 1:30:21Speaker 13: season in order to do that. It was a much
- 1:30:23Speaker 13: shorter postseason for that team.
- 1:30:25Speaker 8: To win it all.
- 1:30:26Speaker 13: But look, they're going to have to hang their hat
- 1:30:28Speaker 13: on the running game. They have to get much more
- 1:30:29Speaker 13: physical on the offensive line. And defensively, they have to
- 1:30:32Speaker 13: start being more dominant on that side and getting more pressure,
- 1:30:35Speaker 13: getting more tackles for loss and negative plays, which hasn't
- 1:30:37Speaker 13: really been them so far this season. So they're going
- 1:30:40Speaker 13: to have to lean on a lot of other peoples
- 1:30:41Speaker 13: outside of the quarterback position.
- 1:30:43Speaker 8: And for all those people who aren't big Julian Sand fans,
- 1:30:45Speaker 8: how are you feeling now if you're a Buckeyes fan?
- 1:30:47Speaker 13: For a guy who completed his career over 70% of
- 1:30:49Speaker 13: his passes, it's like now you're really concerned about whether
- 1:30:52Speaker 13: or not you can even beat Michigan at the end
- 1:30:54Speaker 13: of the season, let alone try to win a national championship.
- 1:30:56Speaker 13: So defensively, I'm still a believer in this team because
- 1:30:59Speaker 13: I think they've got a hell of a coaching staff.
- 1:31:01Speaker 13: They have a ton of talent, the best player in
- 1:31:02Speaker 13: the country, and Jeremiah Smith. It just comes down to,
- 1:31:06Speaker 13: can they put together a game plan that allows, whether
- 1:31:08Speaker 13: it's Luke Fahey or Tavian St. Clair or a combination
- 1:31:11Speaker 13: of both, or maybe you use Legend Bay, who did
- 1:31:13Speaker 13: use to play some quarterback during his days in high school.
- 1:31:16Speaker 8: Maybe he comes in as a wildcat quarterback.
- 1:31:18Speaker 13: Whatever the case is, putting together a game plan that
- 1:31:21Speaker 13: might not be what the identity of your offense has
- 1:31:23Speaker 13: been so far this year, But it places their strengths
- 1:31:26Speaker 13: and allows you to be successful. That's going to be
- 1:31:28Speaker 13: the formula moving forward. And they've got to figure out
- 1:31:31Speaker 13: what that's going to be over the course of the
- 1:31:32Speaker 13: next week or so during their bye before they play
- 1:31:34Speaker 13: a tough SC team. So I'm not counting them out
- 1:31:37Speaker 13: because history has shown us otherwise. But the Big Ten
- 1:31:40Speaker 13: now is wide open. And I think for the SEC,
- 1:31:43Speaker 13: because you haven't won the national championship now in the
- 1:31:45Speaker 13: past four years, the door is open. You've got some
- 1:31:48Speaker 13: teams that are going to be in contention for it, obviously,
- 1:31:50Speaker 13: despite some of the struggles we've talked about. with Texas
- 1:31:52Speaker 13: and Orange and whoever else, LSU and Sam Levin, the
- 1:31:55Speaker 13: door's wide open now because Ohio State was the team
- 1:31:57Speaker 13: to beat in the Big Ten.
- 1:32:00Speaker 6: You know, people forget John Wooden actually took a few
- 1:32:03Speaker 6: years to get UCLA rolling. We're all impatient. We want
- 1:32:06Speaker 6: you to be great. Ryan Day wins 88% of his games,
- 1:32:09Speaker 6: and he's always under attack from Buckeye fans. I've told
- 1:32:14Speaker 6: USC fans this. Listen, if you want to, the NIL
- 1:32:19Speaker 6: means you have to go to the boosters and ask
- 1:32:20Speaker 6: for $ 35 million a year. They just spent $ 250 million
- 1:32:24Speaker 6: on facilities. You want to buy out Lincoln Riley? That's
- 1:32:28Speaker 6: $ 70 million. And the new guy is going to cost
- 1:32:31Speaker 6: you $ 12 million a year or $ 9 million a year.
- 1:32:32Speaker 6: So NIL has actually helped coaches keep their jobs for
- 1:32:36Speaker 6: a lot of these schools because you can't just blow
- 1:32:38Speaker 6: them out. And my other thing is, I want your
- 1:32:42Speaker 6: opinion on Lincoln. If I just said, Lincoln Riley, write
- 1:32:44Speaker 6: a paragraph. Where are you today? Obviously, the defense remains
- 1:32:49Speaker 6: an enigma today. But they're just tremendous offensively, throwing the
- 1:32:53Speaker 6: ball in a throwing era. Where do you land on.
- 1:32:56Speaker 2: His position and his space and his ascension right now?
- 1:33:00Speaker 8: Well, that's been kind of what he's been.
- 1:33:01Speaker 13: He's a great offensive line. And I think that gets
- 1:33:04Speaker 13: you only so far as a head coach. You have
- 1:33:06Speaker 13: to be able to pair together with a solid defense.
- 1:33:09Speaker 13: And how you go about constructing that is a separate conversation.
- 1:33:12Speaker 13: But from his time taking over for Bob Stoops, who
- 1:33:15Speaker 13: really built the foundation of that program and kind of
- 1:33:17Speaker 13: just gave him the keys and let him run it,
- 1:33:20Speaker 13: they obviously had success. You have guys who are winning
- 1:33:22Speaker 13: Heistons and making a college football playoff berth, but you're
- 1:33:24Speaker 13: never able to get to the pinnacle. And so then
- 1:33:26Speaker 13: you go to SC, and that was the expectation. I
- 1:33:29Speaker 13: think the tough thing for a guy like Wendigan Riley
- 1:33:31Speaker 13: is you've had good recruiting classes. You've had a Heisman
- 1:33:35Speaker 13: Trophy winner in Caleb Williams. You've had other talented players.
- 1:33:38Speaker 8: Come through there. But it hasn't equated to the postseason success.
- 1:33:41Speaker 13: Never winning a conference championship, never having a college football
- 1:33:43Speaker 13: playoff berth. And when you watch what Kurt Cignetti has done,
- 1:33:47Speaker 13: where he takes an Indiana program that was arguably the
- 1:33:50Speaker 13: worst ever in college football history and turns it around
- 1:33:53Speaker 13: in basically two years' time to win a national championship.
- 1:33:56Speaker 8: You have to be.
- 1:33:57Speaker 13: Scratching your head if you're an SC booster, if you're
- 1:33:59Speaker 13: an SC fan, going, why can't we do this? We're
- 1:34:02Speaker 13: in a recruiting hotbed. We're in an easy place to
- 1:34:05Speaker 13: get guys to come to. We supposedly have enough money
- 1:34:08Speaker 13: to do so. Why can't we do this? They just
- 1:34:10Speaker 13: did it in the Big Ten. And so, you know,
- 1:34:12Speaker 13: there's obviously some difficulties for both those teams and the
- 1:34:15Speaker 13: challenge they have, but Kurt Cignetti has made it harder
- 1:34:18Speaker 13: for a lot of blue blood programs who aren't having
- 1:34:20Speaker 13: that quick turnaround like they thought they were going to,
- 1:34:22Speaker 13: that are well-funded, where everyone's kind of looking at him saying, well,
- 1:34:25Speaker 13: why can't you do what he's doing if you're such
- 1:34:27Speaker 13: a good coach? We're paying you all this money. And
- 1:34:29Speaker 13: that's a legitimate question. So, look, he's a great offensive line.
- 1:34:32Speaker 13: No one's going to deny that. What they do this season, though,
- 1:34:36Speaker 13: that's still all out there for them.
- 1:34:37Speaker 8: They've got some big-time games ahead.
- 1:34:39Speaker 13: I think at the end of the day, if they
- 1:34:40Speaker 13: are a 10-2 team with their schedule, depending on who
- 1:34:43Speaker 13: they beat, if it is Ohio State, maybe they don't
- 1:34:45Speaker 13: get quite as much credit for it. Maybe that UCLA win,
- 1:34:47Speaker 13: all of a sudden, it would look a lot better
- 1:34:49Speaker 13: on the resume, given even their circumstance, even though they're
- 1:34:52Speaker 13: playing with a backup, too. You still look at a
- 1:34:55Speaker 13: couple of those teams and go, if they're able to
- 1:34:57Speaker 13: be one of those two at 10-2, they'll definitely be
- 1:34:59Speaker 13: in contention for the playoff. And if they win them out,
- 1:35:01Speaker 13: obviously they're playing the Big Ten Championship. And that narrative
- 1:35:03Speaker 13: is changing completely for him.
- 1:35:05Speaker 6: Finally, by the way, Indiana at Michigan on Fox. Brady Quinn,
- 1:35:10Speaker 6: part of the big noon kickoff. That's a really interesting game.
- 1:35:12Speaker 6: Michigan's secondary is pretty good. Indiana's got great ability to
- 1:35:15Speaker 6: beat you down the field. That's a really interesting matchup
- 1:35:18Speaker 6: for me. And Michigan's offense does look like it's more
- 1:35:20Speaker 6: functional now. So the 2014 playoff, my argument is generally, Brady,
- 1:35:26Speaker 6: that in life, if something, the quality is good, it
- 1:35:29Speaker 6: could be a restaurant. It can move, you and your
- 1:35:32Speaker 6: wife will still find it. It can expand and lose
- 1:35:35Speaker 6: its charm, you and your wife will still go. College
- 1:35:38Speaker 6: football's product is so damn good. Last week, Saturday, was
- 1:35:40Speaker 6: so much better than NFL Sunday. The product's so good,
- 1:35:44Speaker 6: we can expand, we can move, we can, it's just,
- 1:35:48Speaker 6: it's gonna be okay at 24 teams. Or there's the
- 1:35:52Speaker 6: traditionalist that says, you know, you don't love the romance
- 1:35:54Speaker 6: of it, the charm of it.
- 1:35:55Speaker 2: It's a fair argument. Maybe I don't.
- 1:35:58Speaker 1: Where do you land?
- 1:36:01Speaker 13: I land on the inclusiveness of the expansion. It is
- 1:36:04Speaker 13: obviously going to be a good thing. I mean, to
- 1:36:05Speaker 13: your point, if more teams are making the college football playoff,
- 1:36:08Speaker 13: it probably slows down the quick trigger to move on
- 1:36:11Speaker 13: from coaches. You probably don't see as many players being
- 1:36:14Speaker 13: as transient, although the Protect College Sports Act is going
- 1:36:16Speaker 13: to limit that a little bit to reducing the amount
- 1:36:19Speaker 13: of times players can transfer before they graduate. There's some
- 1:36:22Speaker 13: caveats to saying that, but I think the hardest transition
- 1:36:26Speaker 13: for all of us is that you can lose a
- 1:36:28Speaker 13: couple of games now and still feel like your team
- 1:36:30Speaker 13: has a shot. And that didn't used to be the
- 1:36:33Speaker 13: case in college football. That's where it really differentiated itself
- 1:36:35Speaker 13: from the NFL. That was one of the hardest things
- 1:36:37Speaker 13: transitioning to the NFL as a college football player when
- 1:36:41Speaker 13: you win a lot of games. You're sitting there saying
- 1:36:42Speaker 13: to yourself, I can't afford to lose five, six games.
- 1:36:46Speaker 13: That's an awful season in college. Well, in the NFL,
- 1:36:49Speaker 13: you're probably a playoff team. You're probably winning your division So,
- 1:36:52Speaker 13: you know, it's changing the thinking, I think, of how
- 1:36:55Speaker 13: a lot of fans and even some of the coaches
- 1:36:56Speaker 13: and players feel about it. And their response to losses,
- 1:37:00Speaker 13: knowing that in a 2014 playoff, you're going to have
- 1:37:01Speaker 13: two lost teams, you're going to have three lost teams
- 1:37:03Speaker 13: who are going to be a part of it. And
- 1:37:05Speaker 13: that just hasn't been the nature of college football. It's
- 1:37:08Speaker 13: traditionally been a regular season sport where it comes down
- 1:37:11Speaker 13: to a team that's undefeated or a team with one loss.
- 1:37:13Speaker 13: And based on how that whole game goes, that was
- 1:37:15Speaker 13: how they're going to be voted or that was what
- 1:37:16Speaker 13: it was going to look like. well we've we've strayed
- 1:37:20Speaker 13: away from wanting to make it a regular season sport
- 1:37:22Speaker 13: and it's becoming a postseason sport so you know there's
- 1:37:26Speaker 13: some different feelings i have about that in general you
- 1:37:28Speaker 13: know but at the end of the day if this
- 1:37:30Speaker 13: is the direction that we're going i think it will
- 1:37:32Speaker 13: make the sport better having more teams involved in a
- 1:37:35Speaker 13: world of parity right now where you just said it
- 1:37:37Speaker 13: last week we had five teams in the top seven
- 1:37:39Speaker 13: lose like who's that great team right now in college
- 1:37:42Speaker 13: football i I really don't know.
- 1:37:44Speaker 8: Maybe it's Miami, but that was a controversial ending to
- 1:37:47Speaker 8: that game.
- 1:37:47Speaker 13: You're telling me Florida State shouldn't have had that touchdown
- 1:37:50Speaker 13: for Deuce Robinson and had a chance for a two-point
- 1:37:52Speaker 13: to extend that game?
- 1:37:53Speaker 3: There's just so much.
- 1:37:55Speaker 13: Parity out there. I think it's going to make for
- 1:37:57Speaker 13: a great 2014 playoff when we get there.
- 1:37:59Speaker 1: Good stuff from Brady Quinn there from Colin Cowherd's program
- 1:38:03Speaker 1: earlier today. We'll hear from a couple of Longhorns coming
- 1:38:05Speaker 1: up on 13 Under the Zone. On a Wednesday, Yacht
- 1:38:07Speaker 1: Rock Wednesday here, showering the people here. We like to
- 1:38:11Speaker 1: shower you with lots of sound from various and sundry people.
- 1:38:15Speaker 1: Like Justin Cryer, the Longhorns linebacker, was asked if the
- 1:38:18Speaker 1: frustration the team has been feeling of late comes from
- 1:38:22Speaker 1: not being able to execute what they've done very well
- 1:38:25Speaker 1: on the practice field. Yeah, for the most part.
- 1:38:27Speaker 11: Like i'll like again i said it in the past
- 1:38:30Speaker 11: before i like players that are like 50 50 one-on-one
- 1:38:33Speaker 11: balls you get beat like i'm not going to sit
- 1:38:34Speaker 11: here and and lose my mind off that i want
- 1:38:35Speaker 11: to lose my top off that but there were certain
- 1:38:37Speaker 11: plays in the game where i'm i got so frustrated
- 1:38:39Speaker 11: because i'm like but we've practiced this not even 24
- 1:38:42Speaker 11: hours ago right so for us to go out there
- 1:38:43Speaker 11: and mess it up it's like man like we we
- 1:38:45Speaker 11: have to just have better focus in the moment right
- 1:38:47Speaker 11: and i get it right the game's going on adrenaline's
- 1:38:49Speaker 11: rushing right but like when they may not do the
- 1:38:52Speaker 11: same thing that you've practiced, right? But this is where
- 1:38:54Speaker 11: you apply your rules at, right? This is, you can't
- 1:38:56Speaker 11: practice for everything because much of the coaching before I
- 1:38:58Speaker 11: was born, since the dinosaurs were alive, but I can't
- 1:39:01Speaker 11: sit here and, and he can't predict everything that's going
- 1:39:05Speaker 11: to happen. Like they won't be perfect. And he, I
- 1:39:07Speaker 11: know he knows the OC, but the OC knows that
- 1:39:08Speaker 11: he knows him too. So he's going to give them different,
- 1:39:10Speaker 11: different looks.
- 1:39:11Speaker 1: Right.
- 1:39:11Speaker 11: So we have to apply that training that he's given
- 1:39:13Speaker 11: us to apply to the situation that we're, that we're having.
- 1:39:16Speaker 1: Right.
- 1:39:16Speaker 11: So, Whether we're in the low red, we have to
- 1:39:18Speaker 11: play better low red defense. That was probably my biggest
- 1:39:20Speaker 11: takeaway too. There's things that we've practiced throughout the week
- 1:39:24Speaker 11: and said this is going to come. And speaking from
- 1:39:26Speaker 11: a defense perspective, obviously, we have to do a better
- 1:39:28Speaker 11: job of getting that done. Because I can count countless
- 1:39:32Speaker 11: plays up there that we practiced and we've gone over
- 1:39:36Speaker 11: and we did not do a good job. So again,
- 1:39:39Speaker 11: taking ownership of that. They've put us in the best
- 1:39:41Speaker 11: position to go out.
- 1:39:41Speaker 1: There and do it.
- 1:39:42Speaker 11: As players, we have to do a better job. And
- 1:39:44Speaker 11: there's no other way to put it.
- 1:39:46Speaker 1: And then one more from Hiro Kanu. We heard him
- 1:39:49Speaker 1: talking about Trinidad Chambliss earlier in the program, but now
- 1:39:53Speaker 1: the question comes to how do you slow the man down?
- 1:39:56Speaker 12: Cleaning up our assignments, making sure we have the right leverage,
- 1:40:00Speaker 12: not missing tackles. Because once you make those tackles, they're
- 1:40:04Speaker 12: gonna be behind the sticks. And that's gonna make it
- 1:40:07Speaker 12: a lot harder for the offensive coordinator plays and for
- 1:40:10Speaker 12: him to make plays as well. You gotta make sure
- 1:40:12Speaker 12: his defensive line to contain him in the pocket. to
- 1:40:16Speaker 12: at least make him one-dimensional, just playing quarterback, not using
- 1:40:20Speaker 12: his legs.
- 1:40:20Speaker 3: All right.
- 1:40:21Speaker 1: Sound words right there. We'll see how it turns out
- 1:40:24Speaker 1: on Saturday. We'll be back to wrap up today's edition
- 1:40:26Speaker 1: of the program on 13 Under the Zone.
