- 1:27four from Hollywood. It's time now for Johnny Dollar. How are you making
- 1:36out, Johnny boy? Who is this? Disappoint me? Johnny? You
- 1:38want to recognize the condition of not the voice Joe Crinley, Yeah, the
- 1:44drunken reporter on the daily Era. I want to talk to you. Where
- 1:47are you? No? Not tonight? Why not? In ten minutes?
- 1:49You'd have me shoot my big mouth off about the rackets here and the murder
- 1:53of the honorable Chief of police and the peculiar marls of his lovely young wife
- 1:59and Joe listen. And last, but not least, the ethical and philosophical
- 2:02problems of an intellectual lush a reformed idealist. Once or even twice an hour
- 2:08ago, in front of city Hall, somebody fired five shots at me.
- 2:13Joe, are you there? Beat it? Johnny, grab a plane,
- 2:17train, bus, or walk, But get out now when they put the
- 2:21finger on it sticks. Greensport, boy, is a wide open town tonight
- 2:32and every weekday night. Bob Bailey in the Transcribed Adventures of the Man with
- 2:38the Action Pact expensercout America's Fabulous Freelance Insurance Investigator, Yours Truly, Johnny Dollar,
- 2:57from Special Investigator Johnny Dollar, Locations, Missouri to the home office,
- 3:01Great Plains Guarantee Company, Hertford, Connecticut. Assignment The Open Town Matter Expenser
- 3:07count continued. Item seven dollars and eighty five cents taxi to the home of
- 3:17the Mayor of Greensport, Will Lyons. I decided to go straight to headquarters,
- 3:22so to speak. Joe Crayley, professional reporter and semi pro drunk,
- 3:25might have been able to help, but I didn't know where to find him.
- 3:29So far. I had a lot of questions, no answers. Police
- 3:32Chief Ed Blake had been shot to death in his own home with his own
- 3:36gun. His young widow Marty and city Attorney Dave Sherman had been present,
- 3:39and both told the same story mysterious prowler. Supposedly the prowler was Shorty Wells,
- 3:46an ex convict with a grudge against the murdered chief. But Shorty was
- 3:50missing and the case was at a standstill. So I went right to the
- 3:53top to may Allons, come in, miss come right in. Thanks.
- 4:01My wife has got out this evening and committee meeting at the Women's Club.
- 4:05We can talk here in the library if you don't mind, right fine,
- 4:09take a chair there. Yeah, well, mister Dollar, I will say
- 4:14it's a pleasure to see you safe from sound or you heard about the shooting.
- 4:17Then I heard the shots from my office and the acting Chief of Police
- 4:20phoned me a few minutes later, Well, does he know yet? Who
- 4:24did it? Not the slightest. There were no witnesses, at least none
- 4:28who cared to talk. Carr took off at high speed and then just disappeared,
- 4:32like shorty wells fine. I sympathize with your feelings, mister Dollar.
- 4:38I'd feel the same way if I had been made a target of But you
- 4:41can rest, as short sir, that every facility of law enforcement in this
- 4:45town is working round the clock to bring the culprits to justice. Yeah.
- 4:48That's very comforting, man, But actually I'm not sure I was the target.
- 4:54What do you mean? Well, when I left you and Dave Sherman
- 4:57and came out onto the sidewalk, Mardy Blake was when for me in a
- 5:00car part of the curb. She'd been there about twenty minutes. She told
- 5:03me, yes, but let the fire those shots had the setup plan worked
- 5:08out, and I don't think they could very well a plant it for me.
- 5:11Why not? My schedule wasn't predictable enough. They didn't know when i'd
- 5:15leave City Hall, whether i'd be a loan or not, or what I
- 5:16do when I stepped outside. It's a point all right. My day,
- 5:19on the other hand, had been there for twenty minutes, plenty of time
- 5:23to arrange the thing. But why why should anyone want to kill her?
- 5:27There? You got me? I don't know. After the shooting, of
- 5:30course, I had a police officer assigned to god duty at her home,
- 5:32but I regarded it as merely a routine precaution. I was certain that the
- 5:36attempt was made on your life, mister Dollar. Well, those bullets came
- 5:40too close to both of us for very much peace of mind. Well,
- 5:43at least missus Blake has protection now, oh yeah, yeah, unless that
- 5:47police officer himself knocks her all. Well, you're joking, of course,
- 5:54Maya. That's the worst thing about this whole case. I don't know whether
- 5:57I'm joking or not, But surely you don't say you are you certain of
- 6:00which ones you can trust in the attorney's office, the police force, in
- 6:03your own department, even not entirely. No, the rackets as wide open
- 6:09as they are here, some of the men around you are bound to be
- 6:12involved. I know. It stands to reason every raid we've ever attempted has
- 6:16been tipped off before we even got started. Blake tried while he was alive.
- 6:21Dave Sherman tried. I even organized to myself, told nobody about them,
- 6:27brought in state police to carry them out, same results. Say what
- 6:30about Blake? He must have been in with a mob to live on that
- 6:33lavish scale he did, I suppose so. Dave and I suspected him at
- 6:38times, but we could never turn up any actual evidence. Were he in
- 6:42the city attorney friends ed and Dave. No, they couldn't get along at
- 6:46all. And yet the night Blake was shot, Dave Sherman was staying overnight
- 6:49in his home. Yes, I know, I've thought myself. It was
- 6:54a little odd. Dave says. Blake had asked him to invited him to
- 6:59go on a fishing trip the next morning, a fishing trip, and yet
- 7:02they couldn't get along. Why. No, I can't explain it any more
- 7:06than you can. Any chance Dave Sherman was the intended victim that night instead
- 7:11of Blake. I really don't see how mister dollar in viewed the circumstances.
- 7:15Blake was killed when he heard a prowler and went downstairs to investigate. No
- 7:19one could have expected Dave to do something like that. No, No,
- 7:23I guess not. It was just an idea. I've thought of all kinds
- 7:26of outlandish possibilities myself, but it always comes back to the same thing.
- 7:30Shorty Wells. Yeah, the ex convict who swore he'd get Blake when he
- 7:34went to prison. He was proled just a week before mister Dollar, and
- 7:39he was seen in town the day before the killing, and nobody has found
- 7:43hiding nor hear of him since. Yeah. Yeah, it adds up all
- 7:46right, But somehow I still can't buy it. Maybe it just adds up
- 7:49a little too well. Three forces of the criminals who are sentenced make threats
- 7:54like that, but it's a rare one who carries it out. Rare,
- 7:57yes, but not true. He's a strong possibility. But when I hit
- 8:03town this afternoon, I thought Marty Blake was a strong possibility until the city
- 8:07attorney himself came up with an airtiight alibi for her. Why did you suspect
- 8:11her? Mister Dollar insurance a fifty thousand dollar policy on Blake's life his whyfe's
- 8:15the beneficiary? Well, I don't imagine fifty thousand The last missus Blake very
- 8:20long? They tell me something, mayor are she and Dave Sherman close friends
- 8:26at one time. Yes, In fact, Dave was pretty serious about her,
- 8:31But after she married Blake last year, Dave turned against her completely.
- 8:33I see. I don't think he'd risk an alibi for her out of friendship,
- 8:37if that's what you're thinking. Oh, I don't know exactly what I'm
- 8:41thinking. Mostly I'm just guessing. I've been doing that two years now,
- 8:46mister dollar, guessing, figuring, trying to spot the leader behind these rackets,
- 8:50not knowing which officials I could trust. Mayor is Dave Sherman one of
- 8:56those you can trust? I'm not sure. Good evening, missus Blake.
- 9:09Wow, this is a surprise. Come in, Johnny, join the party.
- 9:15Thanks, because I'm the party. There isn't anybody else kept my watchdog
- 9:20sitting out there in front? Yeah? I saw him. Cute, isn't
- 9:24he? I didn't notice I did. I think that's terrible, Johnny,
- 9:28A girl who's been a widow four days noticing another guy? Why not?
- 9:33You didn't care anything about your husband? That's right, I didn't. Here's
- 9:37to all husbands, may they rest in peace. He's a cute cowpboard,
- 9:46you know what. I asked him to come inside and have a drink with
- 9:48me, and he actually blushed and stammered that wasn't that cute? Devastating?
- 9:56Would you blush and stammer, Johnny? No, I take a drink,
- 10:00which I will, by the way, if you don't want here, make
- 10:01me another one too. What's the reason for this one woman celebration? Missus
- 10:09Blake? I said what I heard you, and you can call me Marty
- 10:15if you want me to answer you, Marty? Why have a lonesome gal
- 10:18routine? It's not so lonesome now, Johnny. Oh, here's your drink.
- 10:26He's to getting shot at shot at how Marty, like we were this
- 10:31afternoon, or like your husband? Everybody can't be lucky. Maybe I just
- 10:35didn't live right. Well, I mean he's not living anyway. Now.
- 10:41I'll bet you know how to live, Johnny. Oh, sure, I
- 10:43got a system. Tell me about it. Well, the first thing I
- 10:48do is hook up with the rackets so I can buy my wife lots of
- 10:50expensive kids. Why don't you lay off that stuff? Why don't you try
- 10:54being nice for a change. Well, it's not part of my system.
- 11:00God didn't kill him, you know that now, So why don't you relax
- 11:03and be human? Oh? The last time I relaxed around you. I
- 11:07caught the breeze off of five bullets. You're breathing, aren't you? I
- 11:11might not be if they'd been after me instead of you. So he's stealing
- 11:15that kick? Oh, it figures, Mardy. I'm no threat to anybody,
- 11:16not yet. I don't know enough about this mess, and you're saying
- 11:20I do. I suppose I think so? Now? Who'd want to get
- 11:24you out of the way, Marty? To keep you from talking? Maybe?
- 11:28Don't you ever give up? All right? Tell me this. Did
- 11:31Dave Sherman really see that shooting? Or is he just giving you an alibi?
- 11:35Why don't you ask him? Or is he giving himself an alibi?
- 11:37By any chance? You're crazy? Maybe? Where short he was? I
- 11:43said, where is short? I heard what you said? Well, and
- 11:45suppose you turned out? What are you so upset to get out of here
- 11:48right this minute? Get out? Or so help me up to take it?
- 11:50Easy money? What's that cute cop going to think? I don't care
- 11:54what anybody thinks. You get out of here and get out fast? Nine
- 12:01am nine fourteen dollars and forty cents drinks, tips and transportation or a local
- 12:05expedition and plain and fancy pub crawling. I was looking for Joe Craley,
- 12:11dissolution idealist, a nice y reporter on the Green Sport Daily Herald. I
- 12:15found him on my third martini. He was on a seven. Oh,
- 12:18Johnny, how'd you do it to? What? How'd you find me?
- 12:24Called your paper? I gave me a list of your hangouts. I had
- 12:26four more to go. The reputation is a wonderful thing, keeps you from
- 12:31staying off the straight and narrow. He is looking at you, right,
- 12:39Joe, tell me about Martin. Tell you what about it? Everything you
- 12:43know? Of course she's got an alibi. Oh yeah, I know,
- 12:46I know about it. But you still won't give up. Well, she
- 12:52hates champagne, but she always orders it. Why because it costs more?
- 12:58I see. She's every man's dream, Johnny. A pink and gold doll
- 13:03and spangled tights, and she's a four star tramp. She's an next answer,
- 13:07isn't she? She's an ex lot of things? Ex girlfriend of Shorty
- 13:11Wells, ex girlfriend girlfriend of Shorty well sure ed Blake took her away from
- 13:18him. That's why Shorty threatened to kill him, said Blake was framing him.
- 13:22Maybe he was. I don't know anything could have happened with the police
- 13:26they got in this time crooked? Is that what you're trying to say?
- 13:28Some of them are that. The rest of them are useless. Like that
- 13:33business with the gun? What gun that d Blake was shot with? They
- 13:37found a line beside his body, his own gun. They just assumed he
- 13:41shot it out with the killer. It was two days before they realized he'd
- 13:45been shot with that gun. That Blake hadn't used it. The killer had
- 13:48Wait a minute, do you think Shorty Wells and Marty could have planned the
- 13:52thing to get him? Johnny? I wouldn't put anything past that name.
- 13:56Why do you hate her so much? To him? Yes? Again?
- 14:00And my friend, I don't hate her. I'm in love with her always
- 14:03will be. Joe. Yeah, before she met Shorty well she used to
- 14:09be my girl. It gives you something to think about, doesn't it,
- 14:13Johnny? Johnny Deller? Hello, Hello, Johnny? Yeah, who's calling
- 14:41Hello? Hang on a second, Johnny, Look what the devil is that
- 14:45you? Joe? Joe? Sorry to keep you waiting, Johnny. I
- 14:48was trying to get all the dope on another phone. What Joe? And
- 14:52how to just sober up? So fast. It's a big story, breaking
- 14:54boy, unless you or not, I'm still a reporter. Then go somewhere
- 14:56and report I'm going to bed. You want to bet? Look, Joe,
- 15:00Oh, and he sleeps in Greensport, Johnny. It's a wide open
- 15:03town racket shooting's a murdered police chief with a lovely widow. Sure, fine,
- 15:07So what's the big story? A fire? Boy, house burning down,
- 15:09flames fifty feet high, three alarms, Put your clothes on and let's
- 15:13get going. You get going. The only big story I'll be interested in
- 15:16is when Marty Blake is charged with murder. Johnny. That's where the fire
- 15:20is at Marty Blake's From Special Investigator Johnny dollar location Greensport, Missouri to the
- 15:35home office Great Plains Guarantee Company, Hartford, Connecticut. Assignment the open town
- 15:39matter expense, accunt continued. Itam ten a dollar and a half for a
- 15:48breakneck taxi right to Marty Blake's home, its location marked against the night sky
- 15:52by a pillar of flame visible for a mile. The fire didn't make sense,
- 15:56so it fit in nicely with the rest of the case. None of
- 15:58it made sense. The police chief had Blake, Marty's middle aged husband of
- 16:02eight months have been shot to death in his own home with his own gun,
- 16:04and less than twenty four hours later, Marty had filed claim on his
- 16:07fifty thousand dollars life insurance policy. She didn't love him and admitted it good
- 16:12case, except for one thing. The city attorney himself was present at the
- 16:17time of the shooting and backed up Mardy's story of a mysterious prowler, supposedly
- 16:19ex convict Shorty Wells. But Shorty was missing, and the whole thing was
- 16:25just a little too convenient, too pat especially in a wide open town.
- 16:33Joe Crailey was going to meet me at the fire, but I didn't see
- 16:36him around. The Fians were taking a strong hold and the whole outside of
- 16:40the house was blazing. The fireman couldn't do much except try to control it
- 16:42him from spreading. And the whole back of clouds that had collected on the
- 16:45street and lawns. Oh, how do you figure this one, mister Dollar?
- 16:49And on how that's present? Was City Attorney Dave Sherman, And you
- 16:53wanted to get things stirred up, and they seemed to be stirred all right.
- 16:57Were you here when this Hammond, mister sherm No this time, I'm
- 17:00not a witness for the defense. I arrived after the firing. Yeah,
- 17:03what about money. She's all right, she got out before it really caught,
- 17:08sitting over there in my car. Then she was here when it started.
- 17:12Yeah, alone, so it seems. But there was a police officer
- 17:17on. God, y, I thought you meant alone in the house.
- 17:19Now he was out here in front. The first thing he knew, flames
- 17:22were breaking out of the windows. And then Marty came running out of the
- 17:26house. No one had arrived and left a not that he saw. You're
- 17:30still trying to tag her. Huh. Oh, I'm trying to take whoever
- 17:33is skilledy. She figures that's all not on the shooting. Oh, I'm
- 17:37not with the alibi you've given her. That's the dollar. Look, she
- 17:42was standing ten feet away from me in the second floor hall when ed Blake
- 17:47was shot to death in the dark downstairs. Now that is not an alibi,
- 17:52It is a fact. Ah, yeah, sure I know, unless,
- 17:55of course I'm lying. All right? Are you why her? Old
- 18:00time sake? Maybe you were in lover that want, mister Sherman. Oh,
- 18:03I got named two dozen guys around this town who were once. Yeah,
- 18:07Shorty Wells, for instance. That's right, That's why Shorty threatened to
- 18:11kill Blake when Blake sent in a prisoner. He claimed he was being framed
- 18:15out of the way to give Blake a clear field. Gone, Shorty's a
- 18:18hudlerm He was guilty as charged, all right. But Blake was in on
- 18:22the rackets, wasn't all It would seem that way. Then there's also Joe
- 18:26Craley. Marty was his girl at one time, wasn't she. That's when
- 18:30he started drinking when she threw him over. Why did she throw him over
- 18:33for the usual reason. Somebody knew who? Well me, I thought.
- 18:41Took me three months to find out that I was running interference for Shorty well
- 18:45All right, So Joe Crayley took to drink. What did you take to
- 18:48mister Sherman law enforcement. I set out to break the rackets in this town
- 18:52and get rid of hoodlums like Shorty Wells and all the rest of them.
- 18:56Yeah, but the rackets are still here and I'm still trying dollar. Oh
- 19:00look, I want to get one thing very straight. What ed Blake's killing?
- 19:06It happened just exactly the way I told you that story. Is true.
- 19:10Marty didn't do it? Maybe not, but she's in it some way,
- 19:12She's bound of me. Well that's something I wouldn't know. Everywhere you
- 19:17turn in this case, you keep hearing about Marty Blake. Marty Blake,
- 19:19she's a one link that ties everything together. There. Oh, maybe that
- 19:22fire there? What's the story on that? Why didn't you ask her?
- 19:30I left him standing there, staring into the fire, staring into his own
- 19:33pass. Maybe I didn't know. To me was still a puzzle question mark,
- 19:38and I didn't have the answer to him, not a much else.
- 19:41In fact, if he was telling the truth, Marty Blake couldn't have killed
- 19:45her husband, And so far, at least there was nothing to show he
- 19:48was lying. I pushed on through the crowd of spectators, the thrill seekers,
- 19:52the morbidly curious followers of fire engines, and walked towards Sherman's car.
- 19:56Marty was sitting there along, subdued for once clot and she looks scared.
- 20:03Hello, Johnny, get in and sit with me, all right, Just
- 20:12look at it. Isn't it terrible? It is be worse if you were
- 20:17in it when I was, when it started? Just how did it start?
- 20:19I don't know. I think you were right, Johnny about that shooting
- 20:25in front of the city Hall. Oh, I think it was me they
- 20:26were after, not you. Now they've tried again. Possible, there's no
- 20:32other reason for burning down my home. Who do you mean by they?
- 20:36Mighty? Who? I don't know who ever killed it? I guess if
- 20:40you know, you'd better tell me why. You still can't if somebody is
- 20:44out to get you, if that's what's behind all this, then they obviously
- 20:47mean business. I don't know, Johnny, I told you that. Well,
- 20:49how about a guess that? Oh? Maybe Shorty Wells. I don't
- 20:52know why. Why the man he threatened is already dead. Why would he
- 20:56go after you? Maybe to get even? He told he hated me when
- 21:00I broke off with him. It's just the kind of thing you think of
- 21:02doing. Or didn't you know he was in love with me once? Oh?
- 21:06I know, I'm asking you. How did the fire start? I
- 21:08don't know really. After you left this evening, I lay down on a
- 21:12sofa. I've been drinking, as you know, and I guess I just
- 21:18went to sleep. Anyway. No one else had been there after I left,
- 21:21No anyway, I woke up with smoke all around and flames and all.
- 21:25It was terrible, Johnny. I was just lucky I got out alive.
- 21:29You always were lucky, Marty. Joe, what are you doing here?
- 21:32How about it? Johnny? You glad I phone or not? Oh?
- 21:34Yeah, sure, I wouldn't have missed it for a million? Has
- 21:37she confessed yet? We can run a new headline on the extra she has?
- 21:40I can do without any remarks from you. Joe. Sure you can,
- 21:42Baby, You're doing fine, just as you are. Get away from
- 21:45here and leave me alone. Can't do it, baby, I'm assigned to
- 21:48cover the fire. Gotta get all the angles. Human interests. That's you,
- 21:51baby, You are human, aren't you? You? Stupid fool?
- 21:56Financial angles too, got one there you might be interested in, Johnny.
- 21:59Did you know that house is heavily insured against fire? Yes? Yes,
- 22:02I know, Joe. I checked through the company report before I left the
- 22:04hotel. What of it? What if it is? Most houses are insured
- 22:08against fire, aren't they? Sure? They are? Especially by prudent people
- 22:11like you, people who think of everything. Take it easy show, Get
- 22:15them away from here, Johnny. Oh you didn't think of everything, baby?
- 22:18What it's too bad your car wasn't in the garage instead of sitting out
- 22:21in the driveway, then all your assets would have been converted into cash,
- 22:25nice green, bloody cash. Get away from me, Get away and leave
- 22:29me alone. Why, baby, you can afford me now, you couldn't
- 22:30a couple of years ago. That's why you're tied up with all the other
- 22:34What the devil? He came from the house? Well, they couldn't immun
- 22:37issue maybe, yeah, your husband must have kept boxes of cartridges in the
- 22:41house. Look thereby the cellar door. Somebody staggering up out of the basement,
- 22:45Johnny looking. He's got a gun in his hand, can't he's falling
- 22:48down on the ground. Come on, Joe, oh man, when the
- 22:56damn breaks, everything goes. How could anybody come out of that thing alive?
- 23:00Greensporters and tough cookies, I mean, unlucky. Apparently he's passed out
- 23:07cold. Another minute, he wouldn't have made it. His clothes are smoldering.
- 23:10Yeah, let's turn them over again. Get coat off right easy?
- 23:14Now? Oh good lord, what's the matter? This is the boy everybody
- 23:22in town has been looking for. Shorty Wells, Room six oh four,
- 23:32Greensports City Hospital. Time midnight the time when the pulsive living starts to slow
- 23:37down, the beginning of the quiet, time, when the city sleeps and
- 23:42the nurses and interns walk even more softly, When a ticking clock becomes a
- 23:48drum beat in the ears of restless patience. The time of crises, when
- 23:52battles for life are fought in silence and one are lost. A battle like
- 23:59that was being fo and six so four witnessed at the moment by myself and
- 24:03City Attorney Dave Sherman. All. This is always the tough part and the
- 24:11slow part of waiting it at maybe a long wait, mister Sherman, he
- 24:17ondly three hours and he still hasn't regained consciousness. You know, I can't
- 24:21understand where he's been hiding out since Blake was shure. Yeah, I'm not
- 24:25hard to tell. I've turned his tongue upside down. I tell you,
- 24:27I just can't understand it. Oh, I can't understand a lot of things.
- 24:32It's just another one of a lot of things about this case. They're
- 24:34hard to figure out. All let's tie up with the rackets. That's and
- 24:38I'm sure I'm not sure if anything about this mess. So if we could
- 24:42just tag the person behind them. We gotta wrap it up if we get
- 24:45only excuse me, Dave Sherman's being Oh guess ma'am ah. Doctor Morton says
- 24:56he may hang on for a day or two. As far as pulling,
- 25:00he hasn't got much chance. Oh, he hasn't been conscious at all yet.
- 25:07Yes, yes, I'll keep in touch on it. You know,
- 25:10the minute isn't all right? Maya good night, may l answer. Yeah,
- 25:18he's a real fuss budget Sometimes you got to go to bed. Wait
- 25:22a second, he's trying to talk. Mm hmm, false alarm again.
- 25:32Dollar. Do you think he started that? Oh? I don't know if
- 25:37he did. He got caught in his own trap. I just can't figure
- 25:40out what he'd hope to gain by doing it by Has he been able to
- 25:47talk yet? Not yet? You get your story fun just under the wire.
- 25:52Of course. It insisted mainly of questions. Well, Shorty Wells has
- 25:57the answers if you were only able to give him out. I can't figure
- 26:03him firing those shots, Johnny, I can't either. He fired them before
- 26:07he came out of the blaze. He apparently wasn't trying to shoot anyone.
- 26:10He couldn't even see anyone the ways burn. I'm afraid all we can do
- 26:14is wait. At least we don't know the whole story once he's able to
- 26:18talk. Suppose he never is able. Well, he's the only lead we've
- 26:23had, and he's the only one we've got. Now the whole case is
- 26:29lying right there on that bed. If Shorty Wells dies without regaining consciousness,
- 26:34then we can drop it and forget it because we're beat. Now here's our
- 26:53star to tell you about the final episode of this week's story. Tomorrow.

- 27:47to me, Well, Johnny, has I think been rot to seemingly suspect
- 27:52everybody. I think there's at least one person he's overlooked. I won't say
- 27:56who, because I don't want to spoil it, but and I could also
- 28:00be on the wrong track. I don't remember exactly how this particular story ends.
- 28:06Might be something to think about ahead of the finale on Friday. And
- 28:10now on to listener comments and FEEDBACKT two tester H two O tester comments on
