- 0:04This is Living Waters of Grace, the teaching ministry of Lewis
- 0:08Harold, assistant pastor of Calvary Chapel of Westmoreland
- 0:12County in Greensburg, PA. Now here's Pastor Lewis as he
- 0:16continues teaching through God's Word.
- 0:37We're not living a double life. None of us are totally sinless.
- 0:40No, I realize that we all realize that none of us are
- 0:43totally sinless. We all fall, we all all come
- 0:46shorter of the glory of God sometimes.
- 0:48But when we do, because our hearts are given to the Lord, we
- 0:52repent for those things and we turn back to the Lord.
- 0:57But even though we're not sin less, but we should sin less,
- 1:01right? We should not sin as much as we
- 1:03did before we gave our hearts to the Lord, because it gives place
- 1:07to the devil. If you didn't listen carefully a
- 1:10moment ago, you might have gotten the wrong impression from
- 1:13Pastor Lewis. You might have thought he said
- 1:16that we have to be sinless as followers of Jesus.
- 1:20We all know that is completely impossible.
- 1:22No, Pastor Lewis said that we should sin less, meaning we
- 1:27should not sin as much as we used to.
- 1:31If your life looks the same as it did when you said you
- 1:34received Jesus, maybe that's all you did, just received Him.
- 1:39But you never made him Lord and master of your life.
- 1:42If you did, your life would look different now.
- 1:45Here's Pastor Lewis in the Book of First Timothy, chapter 3,
- 1:49with today's edition of Living Waters of Grace.
- 1:53We've talked in first in chapter 2.
- 1:56Paul gave some instructions to his young pastor Timothy, who
- 2:03has been left in Ephesus to take over the Ephesian church, to
- 2:07pastor the Ephesian church. And Paul has given him
- 2:10instructions that he should pass on to them.
- 2:14And I just want to emphasize that in chapter 2, the first
- 2:17thing that he mentions and emphasizes is the need for
- 2:21prayer. And in that need, he talks about
- 2:24praying for a number of things. He talks about the intercessions
- 2:28and he praying in terms of the supplications and things of that
- 2:34nature. But there's so much to be prayed
- 2:38for in the church. So he starts off the teaching,
- 2:43talking about prayer. And as we move over into chapter
- 2:473, we see the need for prayer. In fact, we as a church
- 2:52emphasize prayer as well. And the reason why is because
- 2:56it's through prayer that the church moves.
- 2:58It's through prayer that the church comes in order.
- 3:01It's through prayer that we can be good examples of the
- 3:07Christian faith and the things that the Lord is raising up in
- 3:11us to do that we would be that light, you know, that light
- 3:14doesn't come, but through prayer.
- 3:16It comes through the the power of the Holy Spirit.
- 3:18And it's when we have the Holy Spirit on the inside of us, we
- 3:22have a light that can shine. Without the Holy Spirit, we
- 3:26don't have a light. It's dim, it's dark, but it's
- 3:30the Holy Spirit that brings light to our life.
- 3:34Jesus says I am the light of life.
- 3:38And as long as he's in the world, we have light.
- 3:40But when we I leave, you know, then it will be darkness.
- 3:43But we have light because we have that spirit on the inside
- 3:47of us and thank you Jesus that we have it because that is what
- 3:52helps us to live the Christian life.
- 3:56So what we're going to be talking about today is going to
- 3:59be the example of why it's so important to have the Holy
- 4:02Spirit to live the Christian life.
- 4:05So in starting in verse 3 here, verse 1, he says this is a
- 4:10faithful saying. If a man desires the position of
- 4:15a Bishop, he desires a good work.
- 4:19So he said this is a faithful saying, this is a trustworthy
- 4:22saying. This is a saying that you can
- 4:24count on. This is a saying that you can
- 4:26believe in. This is a trustworth you can
- 4:28trust this that if a man desires the position of a Bishop, he
- 4:34desires the good work. So the word Bishop here and it,
- 4:38and you know, it's used here in the New Testament, Paul uses it
- 4:42and it's, it's a little different.
- 4:44I think we should talk about it just for a second because it's a
- 4:46little different than what we may have understood a Bishop to
- 4:50be. And I know when I was growing
- 4:51up, when I heard the word Bishop, I'm thinking of some
- 4:54powerful person walking in the church with this garb on that
- 4:58just looks untouchable. You know, he, he, he's like all
- 5:02powerful, all knowing and just like really like he's God's
- 5:05second cousin or something. You know, it was, it was, it was
- 5:08that kind of an attitude almost with these, these bishops in the
- 5:11New Testament church. And, and they had all this
- 5:14oversight and all this power. But the word Bishop here, when
- 5:18Paul uses it, it's the Latin word Episcopal.
- 5:22And the word Episcopal actually means overseer.
- 5:26So the word Bishop just basically means overseer.
- 5:30In fact, in the Word of God, the word Bishop, the word pastor,
- 5:35and the word elder, all three of those are used interchangeably.
- 5:40Often in the Word of God. They all refer to being an
- 5:45overseer. It's an overseer.
- 5:48I just want to take us to a couple of scriptures where
- 5:50you'll see all three of those terms are used.
- 5:54And the first one I'm going to go to is going to be to the book
- 5:56of Acts. If you'll go with me to the book
- 5:58of Acts, chapter 20, Chapter 20. In the book of Acts Now right
- 6:04there in verse 17, he starts and he says from the leaders he sent
- 6:09to Ephesians and called for the elders of the church.
- 6:13And then when you go over to verse 28, he says, therefore
- 6:18take heed to yourselves and to all the flock among which the
- 6:24Holy Spirit has made you overseers and and to shepherd
- 6:30the Church of God. Now this overseer is what we're
- 6:34talking about as being a Bishop and the shepherd is actually
- 6:38pastor. A shepherd is a pastor.
- 6:43He pastors the flock. He he shepherds the flock and
- 6:47that's exactly what the overseer does.
- 6:50I'm going to take you to one other, if you'll go with me to
- 6:52first Peter chapter 5. First Peter chapter 5.
- 7:00Again we see these three titles mentioned in one place.
- 7:04You'll see first First Peter chapter 5, verse one.
- 7:06It says the elders who are among you.
- 7:09I exhort, So he uses the word elders there and then he says,
- 7:13and I who am a fellow elder and a witness of the suffering of
- 7:17Christ and also a partaker of the glory that will be revealed,
- 7:24verse 2, shepherd the flock. In other words, pastor the
- 7:28flock, oversee the flock, oversee the flock, pastor the
- 7:33flock, which is among you serving as overseers.
- 7:39So again, you see those 3 terms used, interchange, They all mean
- 7:42the same thing. Overseer, one who overseas, one
- 7:46who governs the flock, takes care of the flock.
- 7:52So this is what Paul said. I wanted to spend time doing
- 7:54that because here in Calvary Chapel, we don't necessarily
- 7:57have bishops. We don't have bishops.
- 7:59We, we, we, we have pastors and we have elders and we do have
- 8:03deacons also, but you know, but we also have pastors, but the
- 8:07ones who are like the spiritual oversight of the church is, is
- 8:10generally under the leadership of the pastors and the elders.
- 8:15So that's what a spiritual oversight of the church comes
- 8:18from. So then he says that if he
- 8:21desires a good, he desires a good work.
- 8:23If he wants to be a pastor, what that means?
- 8:26It's a noble work. It's an honorable work.
- 8:30It's a work of good reputation. Now, here in Calvary Chapel, we
- 8:34have three that serve as elders and pastors.
- 8:38OK Clark and I are the pastors of the church.
- 8:42And we have George and John who are the elders, and they all
- 8:46give oversight and to the leadership of the church.
- 8:50We work together to give oversight.
- 8:52We pray together to give oversight to the Church, but we
- 8:57don't have someone who comes in with a mitre on and call him
- 9:01Bishop. We don't have that.
- 9:04We don't have that. So he says that it is a
- 9:06trustworthy and faithful saying. And then and he says that it is
- 9:09a good work to desire the work of a Bishop.
- 9:13But then he says a Bishop then must be blameless.
- 9:17And I emphasize the word must be.
- 9:20He doesn't say that a Bishop can be, should be, might be, want to
- 9:25be. He says a Bishop must be
- 9:30blameless. And what does he mean by
- 9:32blameless? He means that, you know that
- 9:34nothing to take hold of. That means that there's that
- 9:39he's above reproach. This is a man who was above
- 9:41reproach. There is nothing to take hold
- 9:44of. There's nothing that people can
- 9:45point to or that people can criticize him for in his life.
- 9:50He's not a man that's living a double life.
- 9:52He's not a man that's here on Sundays and then when he leaves
- 9:55here, he's going to the local bars to hang out, to do all the
- 9:58things that the worldly people do.
- 10:01He is a blameless. The people couldn't come in if
- 10:04the world was to come in or if unsaved people was to come in.
- 10:07They could not point to him and say how is he the pastor?
- 10:10Because I just saw him the other day or the other night doing ABC
- 10:14or D. How is he your pastor?
- 10:17That brings a reproach or shame upon the ministry and it brings
- 10:21shame upon him as a church leader.
- 10:25So he must be blameless. You know, we know that Satan
- 10:29will always try to put people in a position to do things
- 10:33disgraceful or to do things shameful.
- 10:36Satan will always try to do that, to tempt, to tempt us and
- 10:39to put us in situations where we have to make a decision to do
- 10:43the right thing. And so we we want Satan to be
- 10:46cast out so that we can do those things that are approvable to
- 10:52the Lord. We're not living a double life.
- 10:55None of us are totally sinless. Or I realize that we all realize
- 10:59that none of us are totally sinless.
- 11:00We all fall, we all all come shorter of the glory of God
- 11:04sometimes. But when we do, because our
- 11:06hearts are given to the Lord, we repent for those things and we
- 11:11turn back to the Lord. But even though we're not sin
- 11:15less, but we should sin less, right?
- 11:18We should not sin as much as we did before we gave our hearts to
- 11:22the Lord, because it gives place to the devil.
- 11:25This is an interesting illustration of one who is
- 11:29blameless or one who is above reproach.
- 11:32And he says simply this. It's like a boxer, like a boxer,
- 11:37the word pugilist, you know, or a boxer, one who gets in,
- 11:41defends himself in a ring. A skillful pugilist or a
- 11:45skillful boxer is one who can defend himself in such a way
- 11:51that he gives the enemy absolutely no chance to hit him.
- 11:57There's no way you can hit him. No, he's defended.
- 12:00He's defended, so defended that he's not open for a hit anywhere
- 12:05to take a blow. And that's exactly what the life
- 12:09of a Christian or a Christian leader should be.
- 12:11It should be one who lives his life in a way that although we
- 12:15know that the devil is a accuser of men, we know that, but
- 12:20doesn't mean that those accusations have to be true.
- 12:23So there's no way that he can land a blow upon our character.
- 12:29This is what the thought here. I remember when I was younger
- 12:31and I watched the, I watched the young man and an old man.
- 12:34The, the young man was about 18 years old and the older man was
- 12:38about, I think he was like in the 70s and he was boxing.
- 12:42He gave a boxing demonstration and I'm watching these two guys
- 12:47in the ring and this young guy is trying everything he can to
- 12:51land a blow on a 70 year old man.
- 12:54And it wasn't that he was so fast or quick or anything.
- 12:58He was just so well defended in the way that he held his body,
- 13:03the way that he held his hands, in the way that he defended
- 13:05against the blows. The young man could not land one
- 13:09blow and this 70 year old was getting a standing ovation
- 13:12because even though he didn't throw any blows, he didn't
- 13:15receive 1. It was interesting.
- 13:19So as I was reading this, I'm studying this, I'm thinking
- 13:21about this. That's exactly what Paul's
- 13:23saying, that we should, that we should be, we should be like
- 13:26this pugilist, this boxer who does not lend ourselves to take
- 13:30a blow from the enemy in any way or from people in the community
- 13:36in any way. So he goes on here.
- 13:38He says, so the Bishop must be blameless, but he also must be
- 13:42the husband of one wife, the husband of one wife.
- 13:46And it speaks to the faithfulness of a pastor.
- 13:50It speaks to his his faithfulness, his him giving
- 13:54himself all of himself to his wife and not having other wives
- 14:00on the side or he's not polygamous or anything of that
- 14:03nature. He has one wife.
- 14:05Now, it also does not mean Paul is not necessarily saying that a
- 14:10pastor elder has to be married or that he has to have children.
- 14:15He's not saying that he has to. But if he does, then he should
- 14:19be the man of one wife, one wife.
- 14:24He should be the man who, if he does, if his wife passes, if,
- 14:30you know, if he becomes a widower or something, he can
- 14:32remarry. This is not saying that he can
- 14:35never marry again if his wife passes.
- 14:39You know, if he becomes a widower, he can be married
- 14:42again, but if his wife is not past and he just divorces his
- 14:47wife, that is said in the word of God to disqualify him as an
- 14:51elder or a pastor. So Paul continues his point
- 14:57back. You know, that he that he talked
- 14:58about back in 212 when he talked about the fact that, you know,
- 15:02this should be the position of a man.
- 15:05And by clarifying that further here in verse 2, he says that a
- 15:08pastor is a man of he's he's a man.
- 15:12He's the he's the husband of one wife.
- 15:16Every husband I know is a man and every wife that I know is a
- 15:19woman. So it's not a position that's
- 15:22opened up for a woman. Now, there's other ministries in
- 15:26the church where women are definitely able to feel and
- 15:29function in, but the pastor or the elder position is not one of
- 15:33them. And here in Calvary Chapel, we
- 15:35don't have women pastors and women elders.
- 15:39We don't have them. We have women teachers who teach
- 15:42other women, who teach children, but we don't have pastors and
- 15:47elders who are women. And so he goes on and he says
- 15:53not given to wine. I'm sorry, before we back, we
- 15:56get to not to the wine part. I don't know why I ran there
- 15:59first. But anyway, he said he must also
- 16:03be temperate, OK, temperate. So that means that he must be
- 16:07vigilant or have self-control. He must be a sober someone who
- 16:11is sober. He's his mind is not clouded.
- 16:14He's not someone who is given to extremes.
- 16:17You know, he's not someone who has these drastic mood swings,
- 16:20quick tempered person, but he's under control.
- 16:23He can control himself, his temper and also his passions.
- 16:28He's a temperate man. He's reliable, trustworthy.
- 16:31He keeps his head in all situations and then he goes on.
- 16:37He says he must be sober minded, which is very similar to being
- 16:41temperate. But he approaches the work of
- 16:43the ministry with a seriousness. This is someone who understands
- 16:48the value of ministry. He understands the value of
- 16:52being a leader of a congregation, the leader of
- 16:56sheep. He understands what that means.
- 16:58Now, that doesn't mean that he's, you know, always, you
- 17:02know, a stern and ever laughs or you can't hold a regular
- 17:06conversation with them. That's not what this is.
- 17:09What he's saying here. What he's saying here is that he
- 17:11understands that the ministry that he is called to is a
- 17:15ministry of seriousness. It's about souls.
- 17:17It's about winning souls and teaching people who have given
- 17:20their lives to Christ the way of the way, the way of
- 17:24Christianity, to give instruction on instructional
- 17:28teaching on how to walk and live as a Christian.
- 17:31And that's serious. That's serious.
- 17:34So he understands the validity of that.
- 17:36So he upholds the gospel message with seriousness.
- 17:41And again, doesn't mean that he has to lack a sense of humor.
- 17:45You know, some of the funniest men that I know are pastors.
- 17:49You know, they're your sense of humor.
- 17:50Sometimes it could be a little dry, but it's still funny.
- 17:53You know, it's they're they're very pleasant to be around.
- 17:56Very pleasant to be around. Let's see the next one goes into
- 18:01now we're able to talk about the the good behavior.
- 18:05And this is really important because Paul almost talks about
- 18:09the person being a person of good behavior, almost the way
- 18:12that he talks about the women and the way that they dress over
- 18:16in first Timothy 29 over first Timothy 29.
- 18:19If you just turn back there just for a second here, it says in
- 18:22like manner also that the women adorned themselves in modest
- 18:27apparel with a propriety and moderation, not with braided
- 18:31hair or gold pearls or costly clothing, but which is proper
- 18:36for women professing godliness and good works.
- 18:40Paul's also is almost making that same distinction with the
- 18:44behavior of a pastor, and he is saying that just as a woman has
- 18:49to be modest in her dress, she has to be a woman who dresses in
- 18:54good taste, that it doesn't draw attention to her and doesn't
- 18:58deflect attention away from God. Neither should the man of God
- 19:03behave himself in a way that distracts or deflects the
- 19:07attention from God or the gospel and keeps his attention on him.
- 19:12He shouldn't be boisterous. He shouldn't be loud and
- 19:15obnoxious. He shouldn't be someone who is
- 19:18rude. He shouldn't be someone who is
- 19:20disgraceful or does disgraceful things.
- 19:23So he should do nothing to deflect the glory of God.
- 19:29Deflect off the glory of God for people who are looking at him,
- 19:33but they should see Christ in him and in his behavior.
- 19:37He should be a person of good behavior.
- 19:40Then he goes on into hospital. We should be hospitable.
- 19:42And I remember when I was younger and always refer back to
- 19:46that because the church was just so was kind of different than
- 19:49the way it is now. And I'm sure a lot of you can
- 19:50relate to that. But when I was younger, when it
- 19:53came to hospital, you know, hospitality, there would be
- 19:56times when other churches would come into the area to attend
- 19:59services at our church, and they would bring in, you know,
- 20:03busloads of people. And a lot of those people didn't
- 20:06have anywhere to stay. So the Christians in that town
- 20:09that was going to the church, they would open up their homes
- 20:12for these people to stay. Up their homes, they are being
- 20:15hospitable. I know here when people come
- 20:18here to visit to, whether it's the teach here or the
- 20:21missionaries come to give their reports and to share with us
- 20:25there, we always accommodate them.
- 20:27We accommodate them. We set them up in a place to to
- 20:31be either rather it's in someone's house or we pay for
- 20:34the accommodations at A at an inn.
- 20:37We pay for their meals, we take care of them, make sure that
- 20:39they're fed and that they have what they need.
- 20:41You know, we're hospitable toward people who come and
- 20:45visit. And that's really important
- 20:47because we have to be willing. A pastor should be willing to
- 20:50open up their home. Now that term hospital literally
- 20:53means loving the stranger. That's what literally means
- 20:57loving the stranger. So it's loving somebody that you
- 21:00don't really know anything about.
- 21:01Now these people are Christians. We're talking about Christians,
- 21:05other Christians, but they may be coming from other areas and
- 21:08you are hospitable to them. But we're also hospital to
- 21:11people who have need, who have not given their lives to Christ.
- 21:15We have helped people in that way as well.
- 21:17We've helped people have find housing or or help people
- 21:21accommodate them for a couple nights in a inn for a couple
- 21:24nights if they're homeless. So we have been hospitable
- 21:28towards both those that are inside the church and those who
- 21:31have been outside of the church. Romans 12 and 13 says it talks
- 21:35about the distributing to the needs of the Saints and being
- 21:38given to hospitality. Hebrews 13 and two says that you
- 21:43we're not to forget to entertain strangers for by so or for by
- 21:48doing so we unknowingly entertain angels.
- 21:53So we need to also look at being hospitable.
- 21:57How important that is. Now there was a case in 3rd John
- 22:01where the atrophis was a man who was not hospitable.
- 22:05In fact, he refused to receive the missionaries and actually
- 22:09denied or did not permit anyone else in his church to receive
- 22:13them. So Paul said that this person
- 22:16will be dealt with. That is not the way of the Lord.
- 22:19That is not the Christian way is to deny hospitality to a brother
- 22:25or a sister. So we should be hospitable.
- 22:28And then of course #7 says we got to be able to teach.
- 22:31We got to be able to teach. Now that able to teach is not
- 22:36just to be skilled in teaching. For there's a lot of people who
- 22:39are able to stand up here and project words with clarity or
- 22:44communicate in a way that's eloquent.
- 22:46There's a lot of people who are able to do that.
- 22:49But when he's talking about being able to teach, he's
- 22:51talking about being able to teach the Word of God, to study,
- 22:56to show yourself approved someone who is a student, a
- 23:01careful student in the Word of God, but not in their own
- 23:06strength. Again, it has to be someone who
- 23:10is willing and who knows that the teaching power does not come
- 23:16from themselves, but it comes from the Holy Spirit.
- 23:20You have to be someone that's given to prayer, someone that is
- 23:24always calling on the help of the Holy Spirit to help you to
- 23:29teach the Word of God. That's where the power is.
- 23:33That's where the power is. It's not the words that come out
- 23:37of my mouth by myself, but it's when the words that come out of
- 23:42my mouth is empowered by the Holy Spirit.
- 23:44That's what touches hearts. You've been listening.
- 23:49To Pastor Lewis Harrell here on Living Waters of Grace, we're
- 23:53digging into all that Paul shared with Timothy in the books
- 23:56of First and Second Timothy. Timothy was commissioned to do
- 24:00the following fight, the good fight of faith, lay hold on
- 24:04eternal life, to which you were also called and have confessed
- 24:08the good confession in the presence of many witnesses.
- 24:13Timothy would be carrying on what Paul had taught him and
- 24:17continuing on in ministry even though Paul knew that more
- 24:21hardships would come for Timothy.
- 24:23This is the Christian life. It's not glamorous.
- 24:27It's not some celebrity status. It's hard fought.
- 24:31It's gritty, it's unpopular, but it's worth it.
- 24:35Do you believe that today? Are you willing to fight the
- 24:38good fight even at the cost of earthly pleasures?
