THE KNIGHTS TEMPLAR: BANKERS AND WARRIORS
Episode 14 - Human History — Groups & Movements
In this History episode we focus on the Knights Templar — warrior monks who protected Christian pilgrims, invented the bank check, and built a financial network that spanned the known world.
This episode covers their founding on the Temple Mount in Jerusalem, how they became richer and more powerful than most European kings, and how a French monarch who owed them money had every one of them arrested on a single Friday morning in 1307.
The date was Friday the 13th. And it may be why that date still feels ominous today.
