- 0:00What does all this mean? Even though the Gentiles were
- 0:04not trying to follow God's standards, they were made right
- 0:08with God, and it was by faith that this took place.
- 0:12But the people of Israel who tried so hard to
- 0:16get right with God by keeping the Law never
- 0:20succeeded. Why not?
- 0:23Because they were trying to get right with God by keeping the Law instead
- 0:28of by trusting in Him. They stumbled
- 0:32over the great rock in their path.
- 0:36What great rock was that? That would
- 0:40be Jesus Christ. Romans 10:9
- 0:45goes on to say, for if you confess with your mouth that
- 0:49Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised
- 0:54Him from the dead, you will be saved.
- 0:58Whether you are Jew or Gentile, whether you're
- 1:02from Egypt or Syria or China or Russia or
- 1:06India or Bangladesh or Cuba or Canada,
- 1:12anyone can become a member of God's family,
- 1:16God's household, by believing confessing
- 1:20their— with their mouth that Jesus is Lord and believing in their
- 1:23heart that God raised him from the dead.
- 1:29Are you a member of God's family?
- 1:33Listen in as we unpack this further today. Welcome to
- 1:38the One Year Audio Bible Podcast. Today is July 26th.
- 1:42Now let's continue our journey reading through the entire Bible in
- 1:46one year. This week we are reading from the New Living Translation for
- 1:49the Old Testament and for the New Testament.
- 1:54Numbers 30:2-16.
- 2:01A man who makes a vow to the Lord or makes a pledge under oath
- 2:05must never break it. He must do exactly what he said he
- 2:09would do. If a young woman makes a vow to the Lord or a
- 2:13pledge under oath while she is still living at her father's home, and her
- 2:17father hears of the vow or pledge and does not object to it,
- 2:21then all her vows and pledges will stand. But if her father refuses
- 2:25to let her fulfill the vow or pledge on the day he hears of it,
- 2:28then all her vows and pledges will become invalid.
- 2:32The Lord will forgive her because her father would not let her fulfill
- 2:36them. Now suppose a young woman makes a vow
- 2:40or binds herself with an impulsive pledge and later marries. If her
- 2:44husband learns of her vow or pledge and does not object on the day he
- 2:47hears of it, her vows and pledge will stand.
- 2:51But if her husband refuses to accept her vow or
- 2:54impulsive pledge on the day he hears of it,
- 2:57he nullifies her commitments, and the Lord will forgive her.
- 3:02If, however, a woman is a widow or is divorced,
- 3:06she must fulfill all her vows and and pledges.
- 3:10But suppose a woman is married and living in her husband's home when she makes
- 3:14a vow or binds herself with a pledge.
- 3:18If her husband hears of it and does not object to it, her vow
- 3:22or pledge will stand. But if her husband refuses
- 3:26to accept it on the day he hears of it, her vow or pledge will
- 3:29be nullified, and the Lord will forgive her. So her husband
- 3:34may either confirm or nullify any vows or pledges she makes to deny
- 3:38herself. But if he does not object on the day he hears of it,
- 3:42then he is agreeing to all her vows and pledges. If he
- 3:46waits more than a day and then tries to nullify a vow
- 3:50or pledge, he will be punished for her guilt. These are
- 3:54the regulations the Lord gave Moses concerning relationships
- 3:57between a man and his wife and between a father and
- 4:01a young daughter who still lives at home.
- 4:052 Chronicles 17:1-18:34.
- 4:10Then Jehoshaphat, Asa's son, became the next king. He strengthened
- 4:15Judah to stand against any attack from Israel. He stationed
- 4:19troops in all the fortified cities of Judah, and he assigned
- 4:23additional garrisons to the land of Judah and to the towns of Ephraim
- 4:27that his father Asa had conquered. The Lord was with Jehoshaphat
- 4:32because he followed the example of his father's early years and did
- 4:35not worship the images of Baal. He sought his
- 4:39father's God and obeyed His commands instead of following the practices
- 4:43of the Kingdom of Israel. So the LORD established Jehoshaphat's
- 4:48control over the Kingdom of Judah. All the people of Judah
- 4:52brought gifts to Jehoshaphat, so he became very wealthy
- 4:56and highly esteemed. He was committed to the ways
- 4:59of the LORD. He knocked down the pagan shrines and
- 5:03destroyed the Asherah poles. In the 3rd year of his reign,
- 5:07Jehoshaphat sent out his officials to teach in
- 5:10all the towns of Judah. These officials included Ben-Hail,
- 5:15Obadiah, Zechariah, Nethanel, and Micaiah.
- 5:18He sent Levites along with them, including Shemaiah,
- 5:22Nethaniah, Zebadiah, Asahel,
- 5:25Shemaroth, Jehonathan,
- 5:27Adonijah, Tobijah, and Tob-Adonijah.
- 5:31He also sent out the priests Elishama and Jehoram, They took
- 5:36copies of the Book of the Law of the Lord and traveled around through all
- 5:40the towns of Judah teaching the people.
- 5:43Then the fear of the Lord fell over all the surrounding kingdoms
- 5:48so that none of them declared war on Jehoshaphat.
- 5:52Some of the Philistines brought him gifts and silver as tribute.
- 5:56And the Arabs brought 7,700 rams and 7,700
- 6:01male goats. So Jehoshaphat became more and more powerful
- 6:05and built fortresses and store cities throughout Judah.
- 6:09He stored numerous supplies in Judah's towns and stationed
- 6:13an army of seasoned troops at Jerusalem. His army
- 6:16was enrolled according to ancestral clans.
- 6:19From Judah there were 300,000 troops organized
- 6:24in units of 1,000 under the command of Adnah.
- 6:27Next in command was Jehohanan, who commanded 280,000
- 6:33troops. Next was Amasiah son of Zicri, who volunteered
- 6:37for the Lord's service, with 200,000
- 6:41troops under his command. From Benjamin, there were 200,000
- 6:46troops equipped with bows and shields. They were under the command
- 6:49of Eliada, a veteran soldier. Next in command was
- 6:53Jehozabad, who commanded 180,000 armed
- 6:57men. These were the troops stationed in Jerusalem to serve the king,
- 7:02besides those Jehoshaphat stationed in the fortified cities
- 7:05throughout Judah. Now Jehoshaphat enjoyed great
- 7:09riches and high esteem, and he arranged for his son to marry the
- 7:14daughter of King Ahab of Israel. A few years
- 7:18later, he went to Samaria to visit Ahab, who prepared a great
- 7:22banquet for him and his officials. They butchered great numbers
- 7:26of sheep and oxen for the feast. Then Ahab
- 7:30enticed Jehoshaphat to join forces with him to attack Ramoth-gilead.
- 7:35Will you join me in fighting against Ramoth-gilead?
- 7:38Ahab asked. And Jehoshaphat replied, Why,
- 7:42of course! You and I are brothers, and my troops are yours
- 7:46to command. We will certainly join you in battle.
- 7:50Then Jehoshaphat added, But first,
- 7:53let's find out what the Lord says. So King
- 7:57Ahab summoned his prophets, 400 of them, and asked them,
- 8:01Should we go to war against Ramoth-gilead or not?
- 8:04They all replied, Go ahead, for God will give you a great victory.
- 8:08But Jehoshaphat asked, Isn't there a prophet of the Lord around too?
- 8:12I would like to ask him the same question.
- 8:16King Ahab replied, There is still one prophet of the Lord,
- 8:19but I hate him. He never prophesies anything
- 8:22but bad news for me. His name is Micaiah
- 8:26son of Imlah. You shouldn't talk like that, Jehoshaphat said.
- 8:30Let's hear what he has to say. So the king of Israel called
- 8:34one of his officials and said, Quick! Go and get Micaiah son of
- 8:38Imlah. King Ahab of Israel and King Jehoshaphat
- 8:42of Judah dressed in their royal robes, were sitting
- 8:45on thrones at the threshing floor near the gate of Samaria.
- 8:50All of Ahab's prophets were prophesying there in front of them.
- 8:54One of them, Zedekiah son of Kenaanah,
- 8:59made some iron horns and proclaimed, This is what
- 9:02the Lord says: With these horns you will gore the Arameans to
- 9:06death! All the other prophets agreed. Yes, they said,
- 9:10go up to Ramoth-gilead and be victorious!
- 9:13The Lord will give you a glorious victory.
- 9:17Meanwhile, the messenger who went to get Micaiah said to him,
- 9:20Look, all the prophets are promising victory for the king.
- 9:25Be sure that you agree with them and promise success.
- 9:29But Micaiah replied, As surely as the Lord lives,
- 9:32I will say only what my God tells me to say.
- 9:36When Micaiah arrived before the king, Ahab asked him,
- 9:40Micaiah, Should we go to war against Ramoth-gilead or not?
- 9:44And Micaiah replied, Go right ahead! It will be a glorious victory!
- 9:49But the king replied sharply, How many times must I demand that you
- 9:53speak only the truth when you speak for the Lord? So Micaiah
- 9:58told him, In a vision I saw all Israel scattered on the mountains
- 10:02like sheep without a shepherd. And the Lord said, Their master
- 10:06has been killed. Send them home in peace.
- 10:09Didn't I tell you? the king of Israel said to Jehoshaphat.
- 10:12He does it every time. He never prophesies anything but bad
- 10:16news for me. Then Micaiah continued,
- 10:19Listen to what the Lord says. I saw the Lord
- 10:23sitting on His throne with all the armies of heaven on His right
- 10:27and on His left. And the Lord said, Who can entice King Ahab of
- 10:31Israel to go into battle against Ramoth-gilead so that he can
- 10:35be killed there? There were many suggestions until Until finally
- 10:39a spirit approached the Lord and said, I can do it! How will
- 10:43you do this? the Lord asked. And the spirit replied, I will go
- 10:46out and inspire all Ahab's prophets to speak lies.
- 10:51You will succeed, said the Lord. Go ahead and do it.
- 10:55So you see, the Lord has put a lying spirit in the
- 10:59mouths of your prophets, for the Lord has determined disaster
- 11:04for you. Then Zedekiah son of Kenaanah
- 11:07walked up to Micaiah and slapped him across the face.
- 11:11When did the Spirit of the Lord leave me to speak to you? he demanded.
- 11:16And Micaiah replied, You will find out soon enough when you
- 11:19find yourself hiding in some secret room!
- 11:23King Ahab of Israel then ordered,
- 11:26Arrest Micaiah and take him back to Amon, the governor of
- 11:30the city, and to my son Joash. Give them this
- 11:33order from the king: Put this man in prison and feed him nothing but
- 11:38bread and water until I return safely from the battle.
- 11:41But Micaiah replied, If you return safely, the Lord
- 11:45has not spoken through me. Then he added to those standing around,
- 11:48Take note of what I have said. So the king of Israel and
- 11:53King Jehoshaphat of Judah led their armies against Ramoth-gilead.
- 11:58Now King Ahab said to Jehoshaphat, As we go into
- 12:01battle, I will disguise myself so no one will recognize
- 12:05me, but you wear your royal robes. So Ahab
- 12:09disguised himself and they went into battle. Now the
- 12:13king of Aram had issued these orders to his charioteers: Attack
- 12:18only the king of Israel! So when the Aramean charioteers
- 12:22saw Jehoshaphat in his royal robes, they went after him.
- 12:27There is the king of Israel! they shouted. But Jehoshaphat cried
- 12:31out to the Lord to save him, and God helped him. By turning the attack
- 12:35away from him. As soon as the charioteers realized
- 12:39he was not the king of Israel, they stopped chasing him.
- 12:42An Aramean soldier, however, randomly shot
- 12:47an arrow at the Israelite troops, and the arrow hit the king of Israel between
- 12:50the joints of his armor. Get me out of here! Ahab groaned
- 12:55to the driver of his chariot. I have been badly wounded!
- 12:58The battle raged. All that day, and Ahab
- 13:02propped himself up in his chariot facing the Arameans until evening.
- 13:07Then, just as the sun was setting, he died.
- 13:15Romans 9:25-10:13.
- 13:20Concerning the Gentiles, God says in the prophecy of Hosea,
- 13:24those who were not my people I will now call My people,
- 13:29and I will love those whom I did not love before.
- 13:33And once they were told, You are not My people, but now
- 13:37He will say, You are children of the living God.
- 13:41Concerning Israel, Isaiah the prophet cried out,
- 13:45Though the people of Israel are as numerous as the sand on the seashore,
- 13:49only a small number will be saved. For the Lord will carry
- 13:53out His sentence upon the earth quickly and with
- 13:56finality. And Isaiah said in
- 14:00another place, if the Lord Almighty had not spared
- 14:04a few of us, we would have been wiped out as completely as
- 14:08Sodom and Gomorrah. Well then, what shall we say
- 14:12about these things? Just this: the Gentiles have been made
- 14:17right with God by faith Even though they were not seeking Him.
- 14:21But the Jews who tried so hard to get right with God by
- 14:25keeping the Law never succeeded.
- 14:28Why not? Because they
- 14:33were trying to get right with God by keeping the Law and being good
- 14:36instead of by depending on faith.
- 14:41They stumbled over the great rock in their
- 14:44path. God warned
- 14:48them of this in the Scriptures when He said, I am placing a stone in
- 14:52Jerusalem that causes people to stumble and a rock
- 14:55that makes them fall. But anyone who believes in Him will not be
- 15:00disappointed. Dear brothers and sisters, the longing
- 15:04of my heart and my prayer to God is
- 15:08that the Jewish people might be saved.
- 15:14I know what enthusiasm they have for God,
- 15:17but it is misdirected zeal, for they didn't understand God's
- 15:21way of making people right with Himself. Instead,
- 15:25they are clinging to their own way of getting right with God by
- 15:29trying to keep the Law. They won't
- 15:33go along with God's way, where Christ has accomplished the
- 15:37whole purpose of the Law. All who believe in Him are
- 15:41made right with God.
- 15:45Where Moses wrote that the Law's way of making
- 15:49a person right with God requires obedience to all
- 15:52of its commands, but the way of getting right with God through faith
- 15:56says you don't need to go to heaven to find Christ and
- 16:00bring Him down to help you. And it says you don't need to go to
- 16:04the place of the dead to bring Christ back to life
- 16:07again. Salvation that comes from trusting
- 16:11Christ, which is the message we preach,
- 16:15is already within easy reach. In fact,
- 16:18the Scriptures say, the message is close at hand. It is
- 16:22on your lips and in your heart. For if
- 16:26you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and
- 16:30believe in your heart that God raised Him from
- 16:34the dead, you will be saved.
- 16:40For it is by believing in your heart that you
- 16:44are made right with God, and it is by confessing with your mouth that
- 16:49you are saved. As the Scriptures tell us, anyone who believes in
- 16:53Him will not be disappointed. Jew and
- 16:56Gentile are the same in this respect.
- 17:01They all have the same Lord, who generously gives his riches
- 17:05to all who ask for them. For anyone
- 17:09who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.
- 17:16Psalm 20:1-9.
- 17:19In times of trouble, may the Lord respond to your cry.
- 17:23May the God of Israel keep you safe from all harm. May He
- 17:26send you help from His sanctuary and strengthen you
- 17:30from Jerusalem. May He remember all your gifts and
- 17:34look favorably on your burnt offerings. May He grant
- 17:38your heart's desire and fulfill all your plans.
- 17:42May we shout for joy when we hear of your victory,
- 17:46flying banners to honor our God. May the Lord
- 17:49answer all your prayers. Now I know
- 17:53that the Lord saves his anointed king. He will answer him
- 17:57from his holy heaven and rescue him by his great
- 18:00power. Some nations boast of their armies and
- 18:04weapons, but we boast in the Lord our God.
- 18:09Those nations will fall down and collapse, but we will rise
- 18:13up and stand firm. Give victory to our king,
- 18:16O Lord, Respond to our cry for help.
- 18:23Proverbs 20:2-3. The king's
- 18:27fury is like a lion's roar. To rouse his anger is to
- 18:30risk your life. Avoiding a fight is a mark of honor.
- 18:34Only fools insist on quarreling.
- 18:39I want to speak to you today from our reading in Romans 9 and 10,
- 18:43and we're continuing on in the theme about Jews,
- 18:47Gentiles, Israel, and salvation.
- 18:52We see at the beginning of chapter 9 of Romans that
- 18:56God chose a special people called
- 18:59Israel, and they were physically descended from one
- 19:03man, Jacob, whose name was changed to Israel.
- 19:08And then he had a son— he had 12
- 19:11sons, and those 12 sons became the 12 tribes
- 19:15of Israel. And so in that context,
- 19:19back in that time, to be a member of God's family,
- 19:23you were ethnically descended from Abraham,
- 19:27Isaac, and Jacob. You were ethnically Israel.
- 19:31And Israel tried to be right with God in verse 32
- 19:35of chapter 9 by keeping the law instead
- 19:40of by trusting in him. And so this first
- 19:45covenant, or the Old Covenant, was brokered
- 19:49by Moses when he gave the Ten Commandments to the nation of Israel.
- 19:53And when he asked them, will you obey these commandments? And they said,
- 19:57yes, we will. That was basically like them saying, I do,
- 20:01like a bride. It's, it's described like a marriage covenant.
- 20:06But they weren't able to keep it, and they immediately
- 20:10committed spiritual adultery and built a golden calf and began
- 20:14to worship that. So in Romans chapter 9, verse 32,
- 20:19the Israelis, the Israelites, were not successful.
- 20:24Why not? Because they were trying to get right with God by keeping
- 20:28the law under the Old Covenant instead
- 20:32of by trusting in him. So God saw that they were unable to
- 20:37keep the law because of the sinfulness of their hearts, and they had
- 20:41hard, stony hearts. So He brokered a new covenant,
- 20:46and this new covenant was brokered by
- 20:49Jesus. And Jesus, when He died on
- 20:53the cross, basically opened the way
- 20:57for anyone, whether they are Jewish or Gentile,
- 21:02to become a family— a member of God's family.
- 21:05That it's by faith, by putting your trust in Jesus
- 21:10and believing in Him that He died for your sins,
- 21:13and then you can become a member of God's
- 21:17family whether you are Jewish or Gentile. So in
- 21:21Romans 10:9, we have this phenomenal
- 21:25verse where if you confess with your mouth that
- 21:29Jesus is Lord, and believe in your heart that
- 21:33God raised Him from the dead, you will be
- 21:37saved. That's the essence of the New
- 21:41Covenant. It goes on to say in
- 21:44verse 10, for it is by believing in your heart that
- 21:48you are made right with God, and it is by confessing with your mouth
- 21:53that you are saved.
- 21:56Now what's also beautiful in Romans chapter
- 21:5910 of what we read today is how the gospel spreads.
- 22:04So you can't change society or culture
- 22:08or government with who you vote for or through
- 22:13social media or through institutional
- 22:17change. The only way you can truly change society,
- 22:21change the culture, and change the political scene is one
- 22:25heart at a time. When people turn
- 22:29to Christ, their heart goes from stone
- 22:33to flesh, and the Word of God becomes written upon their heart,
- 22:37and they're a new creature. So Romans chapter
- 22:4110, starting in verse 14, tells us how the gospel spreads.
- 22:47In verse 14, it is written, but how can they call on Him to save
- 22:51them unless they believe in Him? And how can they believe in Him if
- 22:56they have never heard about Him? Who? Jesus.
- 23:00And how can they hear about Him, Jesus, unless someone
- 23:04tells them? And how will anyone go and tell them without being
- 23:08sent? That is why the scriptures say, how beautiful
- 23:13are the feet of messengers who bring good
- 23:17news. And so when the Word of God goes
- 23:21forth and it spreads rapidly and people
- 23:26share the Gospel, the Good News, with others, with family members,
- 23:30with friends, with coworkers, with the people who are in
- 23:34your sphere or influence of life,
- 23:37then this is Kingdom. The Kingdom
- 23:41is spreading. It's advancing. When people
- 23:44hear the Good News, they understand that Jesus is their Savior.
- 23:48Jesus died for their sins. And that if they believe
- 23:52on Him, that He died for their sins and He rose again,
- 23:56if they confess that with their mouth, then they too can
- 23:59become a member of God's family. So ultimately,
- 24:04God's family in the end in Revelation is
- 24:08going to be composed of both Jews and Gentiles.
- 24:12Jews, the nation of Israel, but all the nations of the world
- 24:17Those who have been redeemed, those who have been saved
- 24:21because they've put their trust in Jesus Christ.
- 24:27We'll continue this tomorrow. Have a blessed day.
