Latest / Kenny Wallace Media / Samantha Busch: "Time To Cancel This Race Car"
Transcript
- 0:00Hello everybody, and welcome back to the Rick Mass show.
- 0:03I am Charlie Marlow, That is the great Rick Mass Rick.
- 0:07We've been texting, tweeting, all that.
- 0:09It is great to see your lovely face once again.
- 0:13How are you, Sir? Doing good, I'm doing good
- 0:15Charlie. Just getting over getting over
- 0:17the week at a racing man trying to trying to decipher everything
- 0:20that went on and watching everybody so post and the media
- 0:24and figuring out what what the complaint is this week.
- 0:26So you know, what are you saying as a complaints?
- 0:29I know what I'm saying. What are you saying?
- 0:31Well, the biggest complaint obviously is, was this race
- 0:36boring? We'll get to the Samantha Bush
- 0:40tweet, but I'll start there with you.
- 0:42So Kyle Larson just dominates this race essentially from start
- 0:47to finish. And no matter how you call that,
- 0:49I saw an ass whopping, ass whipping, ass whooping, whatever
- 0:53it was, Kyle Larson dominates. But in your in your mind, what
- 0:58was it a fun race? Yeah, typical Bristol.
- 1:00Or was it kind of boring? Well, if you throw Kyle Larson
- 1:03out of it, right, I didn't think it was too bad.
- 1:07I mean, if you look back, I mean, the cameras were on, all
- 1:10these guys racing for everything and it was all about the points
- 1:12mostly. But from Kyle, if you just just
- 1:15take Kyle Larson out of the equation, it wasn't that bad a
- 1:18race. It really wasn't.
- 1:19But Kyle Larson, I mean, again, as I said on X, it was a ass
- 1:23whooping. That's not whipping or whopping.
- 1:25It's whooping, ass whooping. Every now and then you'll have a
- 1:28guy out, a team that hits on something special with this car.
- 1:31Well, hell, not with this car. With every car has always been
- 1:33like that. Somebody every now and then I
- 1:35hit on something that just dominates man.
- 1:38And nobody could run with him. And that's what happened with
- 1:41the five car. And you got to give them, you
- 1:44got to give them their due in that one.
- 1:45When something like that happens, man, I just, I just sit
- 1:48back and salute them because it's very, very hard to come
- 1:52come up with something that makes your car that dominant in,
- 1:55in today's world, especially with this race car, as finite as
- 1:59these cars are. It's just, it's, it's hard to do
- 2:01that. So the racer in me appreciated
- 2:04that part, right. So that, that took some of the
- 2:06borness out of it for me watching Kyle Larson.
- 2:09But back through the field, dude, I mean, those guys were
- 2:11all, you know, and the TV did a good job.
- 2:14I, I have, I'll have to give those guys credit, one of the
- 2:17better jobs. I thought of, of television this
- 2:20year, of, of, of, of keeping up with what was going on with the
- 2:23points and who was racing for the points deal throughout the
- 2:27whole race. And now to me, it was just an
- 2:30interesting race. Yeah, throw out Carl Orson, man.
- 2:33He stuck it up. He stuck it up.
- 2:36OK, let's get right to what everybody's talking about
- 2:39mostly, mostly Sunday. And that is the the Samantha
- 2:43Bush tweet. I'll read it for you here.
- 2:45I'll put it on the screen for everybody.
- 2:47She says not just saying this because we didn't run well.
- 2:50But can we all agree the only exciting part of the race was
- 2:53watching Owen celebrate with Kyle.
- 2:56Obviously Kyle Larson's son Owen can't remember a Bristol race
- 3:00being that blah in long time. Time to cancel this race car.
- 3:04What do you think of that? Well, if you take, I take that
- 3:09statement a little deeper, right?
- 3:11What, what I, what, what I take from that statement is she's
- 3:14listening to other folks. She's listening to her husband.
- 3:17Yeah, her husband's not doing good right now with the car.
- 3:20And some other guys are not particularly doing or doing
- 3:22particularly well with this car. But to me, it's like, you know,
- 3:26she's echoing maybe, maybe what a lot of the drivers are, are
- 3:31echoing to each other and in the motorhome lot, right?
- 3:34A lot of stuff for fans, a lot of stuff goes on in the
- 3:37motorhome lot during the week between the drivers and the
- 3:40wives. I mean, the driver will come in
- 3:42and he'll be bitching about the car, bitching about this, you
- 3:44know, and then the wife has to listen to it.
- 3:47And then the wife goes, has her, her little tea or lunch with,
- 3:51with other drivers, a group of drivers, wives, and they're all
- 3:54sitting around talking and, you know, they'll relate what their
- 3:57husband's frustrations are. OK.
- 3:59And first thing, you know, you've got a you've got a theme
- 4:03going on. Yeah, in a, in a, in a motorhome
- 4:06lot with the drivers and the drivers wives.
- 4:08And I'm, I'm I really taking this like this is a theme that's
- 4:13going on in the driver's lot amongst drivers and drivers
- 4:16wives. I don't know that she would just
- 4:19come out and say that, you know, but just listen to Kyle and
- 4:24maybe the frustrations those guys are having.
- 4:27But you know, we're, we're, the problem is we're too deep into
- 4:30this car. I mean, golly, man, the races
- 4:34have been very good at a lot of places.
- 4:36I mean, Richmond sucked and Martinsville sucked.
- 4:39And, and, and, and if you, if, if you look at Bristol, a lot of
- 4:42people saying it sucked with Kyle Larson doing what he did,
- 4:45Although I kind of disagree a little bit.
- 4:47But you know, when you, when you hear comments like that from
- 4:52especially drivers wives, and you got to really think about, I
- 4:55mean, 'cause I know I subjected my wife to this stuff for 30
- 4:59years, OK. And I kind of know how this
- 5:03stuff gets around and how it works and the vibes with
- 5:06everybody. And it to me again, I think it
- 5:09might be just just I can't wonder what a lot of people in
- 5:12in the in the garage are saying. But they can't, they can't do
- 5:14anything about it. You know, the, they, they can't
- 5:17come publicly come out and say the race car I'm driving ain't
- 5:20worth a crap. NASCAR screwed up.
- 5:21This car is no good. You know, you can't do that.
- 5:23You have to work with what you've got.
- 5:24I mean, you know, the teams, the teams really are who asked for
- 5:28this race car, right? They're the ones that wanted
- 5:30this type of racing and this type of or this type of race
- 5:33car. And you know, they, they
- 5:35continually been working on this thing since the beginning.
- 5:37I mean, they've made changes to it, done this, that another I
- 5:41saw an interesting, I saw an interesting answer to that
- 5:45Charlie on on the Samantha Bush thread.
- 5:48One guy said it's not the car, it's the tire, It's the thin,
- 5:53it's the the short sidewall tire.
- 5:56You can't, you can't put a rubber band on the outside of a
- 5:59wheel. No, what was it?
- 6:02You take a rubber band and put it on the outside of a wheel
- 6:04that's made for Rd. courses and other cars, not these cars on
- 6:08ovals, right? And I'm like, that was a pretty
- 6:10interesting take. Oh, that's a fan that kind of
- 6:13knows a little bit and he might be onto something.
- 6:15It could have a lot to do with the sidewall being so short on
- 6:19these cars. I don't know, You know, I don't
- 6:21know what it is, but and everybody goes back to the same
- 6:24thing all the time, Charlie, more horsepower, more
- 6:26horsepower, more horsepower. We got to get more horsepower.
- 6:29NASCAR has already said we ain't going to give you no more
- 6:31horsepower, right. Well, they've done everything
- 6:33here at the down looking. They can do that race car.
- 6:34There's nothing else they could do for short track racing for
- 6:38that race car. And you know we're in it.
- 6:41We're in an entertainment business now, man, go back and
- 6:43look at some of the old races. Go back and look, a lot of the
- 6:46old races we're talking about how great it was before, but
- 6:48man, we didn't have 500 laps of side to side racing at Bristol
- 6:53back back in the good old days, right, We had good racing.
- 6:57He was always good racing. If he's in your race car, you
- 6:59felt like you were, you know, you were in a Ben Hur battle man
- 7:03with your chariot, right Golly foam almighty Bristol and it was
- 7:07it did feel like you're racing in a Coliseum in those days.
- 7:10But you know, I don't know. I don't know how to quantify
- 7:13that. I don't know how to, you know, I
- 7:17guess we'll just have to put up with it with it every week,
- 7:19listen to people fuss about it and try to make the best we can
- 7:23have it. But again, Bristol was crappy.
- 7:25Martinsville was crappy. I'm not going to go along with
- 7:29Bristol. I mean, Martinsville and
- 7:32Richmond were. I'm sorry, Martinsville and
- 7:33Richmond were crappy. Bristol, Yeah, it was crappy.
- 7:36So Kyle lost for that. It wasn't.
- 7:38But anyhow, I I digress here, Charlie.
- 7:41Well, here's a couple things I want to talk about the tires in
- 7:45a second, but in terms of just the interest of watching the
- 7:49race and it was a a pretty fast race in terms of when it ended.
- 7:53I will say this, even though it was pretty obvious how hard it
- 7:57was to pass, for example, lapped cars when you have the the
- 8:00fastest car and, and they're trying to pass, you know, Martin
- 8:02Shurex Junior, for example, he gets his his speeding penalty
- 8:06and it's so hard for him to pass these other cars, even though he
- 8:09was running up front earlier. I do think that the playoff
- 8:13format, especially at a cut off race, saves NASCAR in terms of
- 8:20interest. Because Rick, to me, when I'm
- 8:23watching that TV screen and I'm watching the left side and I
- 8:27see, you know -1 + 1 Ty Gibbs, Denny Hamlin, Martin Truex,
- 8:33you're in, you're out constantly.
- 8:35It's hard not to be pretty fascinated by that.
- 8:38So even though the race wasn't perfect in terms of guys being
- 8:41able to pass cars, I do think that the playoff format,
- 8:45especially for these cut off races, it's fascinating to watch
- 8:49that screen and see who's going to make it and who and who
- 8:51won't. Yeah, Charlie, to your point,
- 8:54something you're thinking about it.
- 8:56Excuse me. I was mesmerized sitting there
- 8:58the whole race watching the left side of that screen and those
- 9:01frigging points, right. I mean, and, and they showed,
- 9:04and here's what was neat about the broadcast.
- 9:05They showed those. They showed the points and where
- 9:08everybody was at the right side of the screen showed those guys
- 9:11racing for the last cut off. I mean, it was a good deal.
- 9:14That's what I bet a while ago that said TV did a good job.
- 9:18And you're exactly right. And if if we didn't have this
- 9:22points deal, all we had to watch would have been Kyle Larson's
- 9:27dominance and how how can you do that?
- 9:29There was nothing. I mean, you talking about being
- 9:31people think it was born the way it way it was Saturday night.
- 9:35If we didn't have this points deal, Oh man, I know the
- 9:39traditionalist everybody, a lot of these traditionalist, you
- 9:42know, raise Kane about the new format all the time.
- 9:44They just like to fuss about it and that's fine.
- 9:46You know, you don't like it. I mean, you're a fan and you you
- 9:49love this sport and you loved it the way it was.
- 9:50You don't like it the way it is. Well, I'm telling you, we're in
- 9:54the new world, man. We have to again, it's the
- 9:56entertainment business. We have to entertain everybody.
- 10:00Charlie, to your point, I just don't think we would be there.
- 10:03I don't think the interest would be the way it is if we didn't
- 10:05have this point step. And another thing, a quick
- 10:07tidbit, we didn't have caution flags.
- 10:10You talked about how short the race was.
- 10:12We didn't have cautious that. That's the other thing about
- 10:15Bristol. Always been excited.
- 10:17You would have a caution man and then that would start and then
- 10:20cautious would start breeding cautions and it would just go on
- 10:24and on and on all night for whatever reasons.
- 10:27You know, everybody was everybody was playing real nice
- 10:30with one another. It seemed like for the most part
- 10:32we didn't have cautions and that that added to the stigma of, you
- 10:37know, a board race because Rich or Bristol, you can always count
- 10:41on causes. So but anyhow.
- 10:43Yeah. So you mentioned tires earlier.
- 10:45Were you surprised that it wasn't more like the spring race
- 10:50where it was crazy with the fall off where nobody expected that,
- 10:54but it made it a damn interesting race?
- 10:56It was. It was so different and then you
- 10:58could tell. So I was listening to a lot of
- 11:00the drivers press conferences, mostly Friday, a little bit
- 11:04Saturday, and all the drivers seem to say, look, this, this
- 11:08race is probably not going to be like the spring from practice
- 11:11and qualifying and all that. It seemed like it's your typical
- 11:14Bristol race and that it wasn't going to have the crazy tire
- 11:18fall off. Were you surprised by that?
- 11:19Because I thought we'd see a little more, not not as drastic
- 11:22as the spring race, but I thought you'd see a little more
- 11:25there playing into the strategy and that wasn't the case.
- 11:28Charlie, you know I'm a student of the sport, right?
- 11:30So I kept, I've kept up with this tire deal.
- 11:33I've tried to keep up with it anytime, any time somebody they
- 11:37would talk about it or, or, or or something, I would read about
- 11:40it. And mostly it was a Goodyear
- 11:41deal. Stu, the Goodyear guy that runs
- 11:44the racing program, I would try to listen every time they
- 11:47interviewed those guys. Booty had him on a couple times.
- 11:49He's on different shows and I would they'd always bring up
- 11:52during the summer. You would hear Bristol a lot.
- 11:54He would, he would bring up Bristol and what went on at
- 11:56Bristol. And then when we get ready for
- 11:59the race, we're going to bring back the same tire we ran in the
- 12:02spring and we don't think it's going to have the same end
- 12:08result as we had the spring, right.
- 12:10And then I listened to some crew chiefs being interviewed and I
- 12:14listened to some drivers and every one of them to a fault.
- 12:19Even up to Saturday morning, I was listening to a couple of
- 12:21those guys, I forget who was saying, you know, we don't
- 12:24really know. We don't know.
- 12:25We don't know what to expect. We don't know what to expect
- 12:28that. And then we get in the race and
- 12:31the tire acts like a normal race tire.
- 12:33It doesn't act like it did in the spring.
- 12:35It's the same fragging race tire.
- 12:37It's the same friggin racetrack, right?
- 12:40But the tire doesn't go to crap in 30 laps.
- 12:43I don't know bad. I mean, this, this one's got me
- 12:45screwed up. I I've got it.
- 12:47I've got to do it. I've got to make a couple calls.
- 12:49I've got to try to figure out what what went on with this tire
- 12:53because you know, and I was sitting there thinking, well,
- 12:57you guys haven't changed anything.
- 12:59Why is it going to be different? Why is this tire not going to
- 13:01come apart in 30 laps? Wait, didn't spring, You know,
- 13:04this is going to be fun to watch.
- 13:05Well, they run 30 laps and the guys had fallen off like what,
- 13:086/10 of a second, 7/10 of a second a lap and I'm like, well,
- 13:12hell, the tire's not doing what it did in the Sprint.
- 13:14I don't know. I don't know.
- 13:16This is this is a big this is a big question mark.
- 13:19Normally something like this, you know, you've got a handle
- 13:21on. But when the crew chiefs on
- 13:23Saturday morning before the race didn't have a clue what was
- 13:27going to happen the hell in the hills Rick Mastery fan going to
- 13:30figure out what's going to happen.
- 13:31We just we sit back and watch and see what the deal is.
- 13:33But it made it made. It's made for an interesting
- 13:36deal for me, let's put it that way.
- 13:38So I'm curious, when you're watching this race, what were
- 13:41you most interested in seeing? So for me, it wasn't who was
- 13:45going to win the race. To me, when I start watching
- 13:48that race, it was all about, is Denny Hamlin going to advance?
- 13:52And I'm a I'm a Denny Hamlin fan, not just because I think
- 13:56he's good for business with his podcast and he challenges NASCAR
- 14:00with the whole charter deal. I mean, he's always keeping
- 14:02things interesting. But I am one of those guys.
- 14:05After 20 years, I I want Denny Hamlin to win a championship.
- 14:09And even if he doesn't win a championship, if he keeps
- 14:12advancing and gets to the final eight, gets the final four, I
- 14:15think it's good for the sport. So what do you think about which
- 14:20drivers advance which didn't? Obviously you have what
- 14:23Keselowski, Gibbs and Harrison Burton and Martin Truex junior
- 14:30out. You have some guys, I mean,
- 14:31look, Chase Briscoe advances, Daniel Suarez advances.
- 14:36I mean Austin Sindrix had a Goodyear, but you have some
- 14:38different names than you probably would have expected at
- 14:40the start of the year. So how do you feel about the
- 14:43guys that advanced to the the top 12 and the guys that fell
- 14:47off? Yeah, the one that really had my
- 14:48interest pics was Barton Truax just because just because the
- 14:51storyline with Martin man, he's a pass champion.
- 14:54You know he's over it. He's done with racing right.
- 14:57It's obvious when he gets it's obvious every week when he gets
- 14:59out of the car. I mean he's not a happy camper,
- 15:02right? He's like man, and and and and
- 15:04and no one erasers mentality. He wants so bad to win, right.
- 15:10He wanted so bad to be in that championship mix.
- 15:12I mean, I mean, how great is go out as a champion or as a
- 15:15winner, right? And that's what he wanted to do.
- 15:18And he is Martin Truax as a champion.
- 15:21He's a winner. He's a Hall of Famer in our
- 15:23sport. There's no doubt about that.
- 15:25And watching his demise, watching the speeding penalty,
- 15:29knocking back, you know, and then of course, he can't pass
- 15:31anybody, right? That was one storyline I was
- 15:33following. Denny Hamlin being in the Chase,
- 15:37right? Denny Hamlin needs to be in the
- 15:40championship battle in our sport.
- 15:42I mean, you're exactly right. And it, it has to do with his
- 15:45brand. It has to do with the longevity
- 15:47of his career. It has to do with him never
- 15:49winning the championship. You know, a driver that should
- 15:52have won a couple championships, he hasn't done it, you know, and
- 15:55here we are. He, he's 1 flat tire or one
- 15:58speeding penalty, right? Or somebody just cross it up in
- 16:02front of him. He's one mistake away from not
- 16:04being in that championship or in the in the in the race and
- 16:08you're sitting there watching that.
- 16:09Whenever they show the camera on him, I'm sitting there, I'm
- 16:12looking at it. I'm like, man, one mistake,
- 16:14dude, you're out of this and you need to be in this.
- 16:16And I'm I'm like you, I'm a Denny Hamlin fan.
- 16:19But you know the thing about Denny right now, his his brand,
- 16:22he his brand, the Denny Hamlin brand is so what's the word I'm
- 16:28looking for, man? It's not controversial.
- 16:30That's not the word. That's one word, but that's not
- 16:32the main thing. But his brand and in our sport
- 16:35is very intriguing is one of them.
- 16:38Yes, his brand is very, very, very important I think in our
- 16:42sport right now. And it's because what he's done
- 16:45is because he's podcast or what he says, the way he conducts
- 16:48himself, right? He's got his haters, he's got
- 16:50his lovers and you know, for him to be in it, it's good.
- 16:55You know, Briscoe, Briscoe been in what a storyline there, man.
- 16:58We look at that team. Look at, I mean, Charlie, I, I
- 17:01can tell you, man, years and years when I was in the sport
- 17:04and even back before the sport and listen to stories and
- 17:07listening to guys, when you're half or three quarters the way
- 17:10through a season and, and next year, that team is going to make
- 17:13a change, right? Whether it be, and most of the
- 17:16time the big, the big chain is the driver is not going to be
- 17:19there next year or the owner's changing or whatever.
- 17:22I'm telling you right now, 90% of the time I've watched the
- 17:25team folds up. All right, you are you, are you
- 17:28listening to me? The team quits.
- 17:31The, the, the, whether it's the driver, the crew chief, the guys
- 17:35putting this thing together, the motivation is gone.
- 17:38They just don't want to. And it's not really something
- 17:41I've noticed this with a lot of people over the years.
- 17:43It's not something they they, they purposely do, right?
- 17:47They don't get up and say, oh, we're not going to be together
- 17:49next year. To hell with it.
- 17:50They don't really do that. It's just, it's a fire in them
- 17:53that that just kind of glimmers down.
- 17:55It doesn't that fire and that desire to do well just kind of
- 17:59dims down, dude. And you just don't really do
- 18:02what you did before. That's what to me is so
- 18:05intriguing about this Briscoe deal, right?
- 18:07The 14 and all of those guys. So some of those guys, if you
- 18:10read believe what you say, some of the guys don't even have jobs
- 18:13next year yet, right? A lot of them have been placed.
- 18:15A lot of them have got places to go and some of them don't.
- 18:18But but for those guys to keep doing what you're doing, it says
- 18:21to me, it says a lot about that team, the character of the
- 18:24people on that team. Because listen, man, those guys
- 18:27were dealt a shitty hand. There's no doubt the guys on the
- 18:30Stewart House race team, they were dealt a shitty hand, right?
- 18:33And, but, but very seldom do you see guys keep that fire burning
- 18:38that bright to try to make it happen.
- 18:41And they're doing it. So to me, that's that's a big,
- 18:43big, big storyline. The Gibbs dude, you know, we
- 18:47thought where that car ran all night, it looked like he was
- 18:49going to start passing cars and get in.
- 18:51He started fading back. He's out of it, right?
- 18:54Burton, of course, had his fire stern issues or whatever, but he
- 18:57was so far back. He's almost got to win to to get
- 18:59in. So, you know, I think with the
- 19:02guys we got left, I think it's a good mix.
- 19:04I I again, I wish, I wish Bart trucks had been in there, but
- 19:07then Suarez or somebody wouldn't have been in there.
- 19:09And that was a good story like these 3 laps out, you know, the
- 19:11dudes 3 laps out and battle for for, for the to be in this chase
- 19:16deal, man. And Daniel Suarez, I'm telling
- 19:19you, Charlie, Daniel Suarez needs to be in our in our in our
- 19:23chase deal. Daniel Suarez.
- 19:25He for the fans that's watching and and and loving our sport.
- 19:29You're watching the beginnings of a brand with Jen, Daniel
- 19:32Suarez. He's he's got his act together.
- 19:34He's got his stuff together mentally, right.
- 19:37He knows. I don't know who taught him.
- 19:39I don't know who's coaching him. I don't know what's going on,
- 19:42but that dude has his stuff together for a long term, to be
- 19:47a long term superstar in our sport.
- 19:49He, he, he, it's just one of those deals.
- 19:51Not everybody can do that, right?
- 19:53He's got the talent to do it and he's he's either being coached
- 19:57or naturally he knows what he's supposed to be doing.
- 20:00But you're watching a brand being built right here, watching
- 20:0310 years. See what I'm telling you?
- 20:05So Suarez right now in 10th. So he's on the bubble for the
- 20:09next three races, obviously, but you have Cindric 9th, Suarez
- 20:1210th, Alex Bowman 11th, Chase Briscoe 12th.
- 20:16And then when you go to the the top 8 right now, so Kyle Larson
- 20:20is is leading. And also it just it's felt like
- 20:23Kyle Larson's year. There's been so much talk about
- 20:26him all season with the double and then all the controversy and
- 20:29the waiver, but then you keep going down.
- 20:32Christopher Bell seems to always quietly be there year in, year
- 20:38out. You know, he's he's a soft
- 20:40spoken and he just, he just delivers.
- 20:43So he's second, Tyler Reddick third.
- 20:45William Byron, another guy who feel like he always starts the
- 20:48season pretty hot, winning races, goes in a little bit of a
- 20:50slump. He's right there in fourth.
- 20:52You got Blaney, Denny Hamlin, Chase Elliott in 7th, Logano
- 20:578th. Chase Elliott for being the most
- 21:00popular driver for a million years.
- 21:02He's also quietly, like, every time I, I watch a race, I'm
- 21:07like, this just feels like one of those weird years where Chase
- 21:10Elliott is going to quietly just get in there and then win it
- 21:14all. Yeah, Chase is a, Chase is a.
- 21:17He's interested, OK And I spoke with Chase somewhere early this
- 21:24year, I forget where somewhere we're at.
- 21:25I spoke with Chase, we're talking about this car and he
- 21:28was talking about, and I've heard this from other guys a
- 21:31little bit, probably not as much in depth as I heard from Chase,
- 21:35but this car requires a little bit different mindset.
- 21:38The way they drive the car, OK, the way the car does, the way it
- 21:41acts and reacts. And he he related that last year
- 21:46or whatever really 1st come out that he fought that right?
- 21:48He fought trying to do what this car was out actually wanting or
- 21:52the way it was need to be driven and set up.
- 21:55And he he was still in the boat of the older car and doing it
- 21:59that way. He finally, he said, he just
- 22:02said to hell with it and all right, I'm going to give in and
- 22:04start doing what this car doing, driving this car the way it has
- 22:07to be driven or whatever you got to do right?
- 22:09And he started doing that and he started getting better again.
- 22:15I mean, if you remember, he broke his leg, you know, and he
- 22:17was out for a few months or whatever, and he came back and
- 22:20everybody put it on. You know, he was out, had been
- 22:23out of the car, lost his rhythm and all that.
- 22:25Just takes time to get back. Well, I never bought into that.
- 22:28I thought now there's something else going on.
- 22:29And when he explained to me about the car and the way you
- 22:31got to drive it and different things, that didn't make sense
- 22:34to me. So I think this whole season,
- 22:36this year has been, has been a learning process for Chase,
- 22:39figuring out what he's got to do to drive this particular car and
- 22:43how it's got to be set up. And, you know, it's never been
- 22:46flashy with Chase this year. You look up there and he's he's
- 22:49sitting there running 8th, 9th, 10th, 11th, 12th all day long.
- 22:52And then all of a sudden, man, you look up there in the racing
- 22:55areas in the top five, they'll have a caution to have a pit
- 22:58stop. You know, he'll be 7th.
- 23:00They'll have a pit stop and tend to go there.
- 23:01He's running third. You're like, where the hell did
- 23:03he come from? Right.
- 23:04He's so they've been real sneaky with that.
- 23:07I mean, you're, you're exactly right in your observation,
- 23:09Charlie about him, you know, and you know, but but again, we got
- 23:13all this mix, all these guys. Charlie will say, I will say
- 23:17this, and a lot of people don't like hearing this, but to be the
- 23:21whole battle is getting to Phoenix, right.
- 23:24Once we get to Phoenix, you know, I it's whoever's got the
- 23:28best setup that day. And and, and, and if you look
- 23:31back last couple years, if we get to Phoenix and the Penske
- 23:35cars are in the race, that's who I'm going to pull for.
- 23:38I mean, that's who I'm going to put my money on is it's one of
- 23:41the Penske cars just because they have a good set up for that
- 23:44racetrack last couple years. So, you know, it's it's it's
- 23:46going to be interesting the next couple races watching this.
- 23:50Yeah, Speaking of those Penske cars, you got Blaney and 5th,
- 23:53Logano 8th, Sindrick 9th. And when you look at the the top
- 23:5712 manufacturer wise, think about the storyline early.
- 24:01Ford, Ford couldn't win a thing, right?
- 24:04And you got 4 Fords, you're including Briscoe, you got 3
- 24:08Toyotas, and you got 5 Chevy's. So pretty, pretty even across
- 24:13the board and and good on Ford for figuring it out after a
- 24:17rough start. Let.
- 24:18Me tell you how weird I am Charlie.
- 24:20I'll be watching the race man and they'll they'll show
- 24:23qualifying or the race is starting to have qualifying or
- 24:26during the race. I'm watching the race and I'm
- 24:28looking at the top 10 rundown and then when the race is over,
- 24:31I'm looking at who finished were and you know what I'm thinking
- 24:34of is Bill France Junior. I'm thinking of Billy France
- 24:37Junior. You know why I'm sitting there
- 24:39counting the manufacturers, I'm like, all right, first is for
- 24:42top five, there's 2 Fords. There's a Toyota or Chevrolet,
- 24:44right? Billy's happy, right?
- 24:47Or, or sometime I'll see top six or Toyotas or whatever.
- 24:50I'm like Bill France Junior is not happy right now.
- 24:53That was one of his deals, man. He wanted the manufacturers.
- 24:57He wanted parity across the board with these manufacturers.
- 25:01He hated and we've talked about this on this show before.
- 25:04He hated for one manufacturer to have a have a dominant deal over
- 25:08those. He and he would change the rule.
- 25:09He would change stuff. I mean, you know, I live that.
- 25:12I mean, he would come down and like, all right, guys, this
- 25:15ain't happening. You're not going to you're not
- 25:16going to muddy up my sport. You know, we're going to we're
- 25:19going to cut the spoiler off your car.
- 25:20I mean, I watched this happen and I don't know, isn't that
- 25:23weird that I would look at the right now at night in 2024, I'd
- 25:27look at a rundown and think Billy France would be happy.
- 25:30How is that sick? Or is that weird?
- 25:31What is that Charlie I don't get?
- 25:33No, that's just hey, you're, you're old school.
- 25:36I like it. I guess I don't know, man.
- 25:38I don't know. No.
- 25:40So Speaking of manufacturers, but then also teams, it's just
- 25:44the last couple years it's been such about Hendrick Gibbs and
- 25:49then Penske always comes late and and wins the championship.
- 25:52So, and I don't know who it's going to be, but, but you would
- 25:55think for that championship for in Phoenix, probably, I mean,
- 25:59you, you could bet there'll be a Hendrick car, there'll be a
- 26:01Gibbs car, right? There'll probably be a Penske
- 26:03car and it'll probably be one more guy.
- 26:06And maybe it could be 4 different teams with 2311, maybe
- 26:09Tyler Reddick gets in there. But I I bet you there's at least
- 26:14three teams represented in that, in that championship for.
- 26:17Yeah, I think you're probably right in, in the luck of the
- 26:20draw and things going wrong. But just the parody of the
- 26:23competition and the way all these teams that are there, to
- 26:27your point what the way these guys are running that should
- 26:31happen right now. What would keep that from
- 26:34happening is bad luck, a wreck, blown tires, you know what I
- 26:37mean, Bad pit stop, whatever that would keep that from.
- 26:41But the the parity of those teams that are there, yeah, it's
- 26:45it's very equal. I mean, it's just as equal.
- 26:48Well, it's just as equal as it's ever been, if not more equal
- 26:51than it's ever been in my time in the sport.
- 26:54Other than Kyle Larson whipping everybody's ass the other night.
- 26:58It's it's been the Paris, it's been it's, it's good.
- 27:00It's good right now. And you're exactly right about
- 27:02that. All right, from good to what's
- 27:06ticking off Rick Mass, anything lately?
- 27:09It's been a while since we since we did this.
- 27:12Golly, you know, things are going so well, Charlie.
- 27:16It's it's just that I I think as I'm getting older, I'm trying
- 27:20not to let stuff make me mad as much as it used to.
- 27:22And, and consequently, here we are on a Monday morning after
- 27:26Bristol and I'm just as I'm just as happy as pig and shit, man.
- 27:31I mean, I don't know what, you know, pig and poop.
- 27:34I'm sorry. Are we supposed to cuss on this
- 27:36show? We're.
- 27:37Allowed to. So what is the allowable thing
- 27:39we're supposed to do or not allowed?
- 27:41Tell me what we're supposed to do.
- 27:42Not do Charlie, because I don't know.
- 27:45This is Kitty Wallace, right? Right.
- 27:47And he really, he really, really tones it down, big guy, right.
- 27:54So I don't know where I'm supposed to be yet.
- 27:56So here's the deal. I'm still not sure specifically
- 28:00YouTube. Every everybody has different
- 28:03guidelines, podcast YouTube for us, we're more focused on
- 28:07YouTube now. I don't even know this is this
- 28:09is true. I, I read somewhere or heard
- 28:12somewhere back in the day that you're not supposed to curse in
- 28:15the 1st 30 seconds of the video. And the reason for that is there
- 28:20are ads that that play right before the video starts.
- 28:24And then so the idea is these advertisers wouldn't want to be
- 28:28associated with curse words right out of the gate.
- 28:31So again, I don't know if this is true, but I usually bleep if
- 28:35there's an F bomb or a bad one. I usually bleep it 30 seconds
- 28:41into the show. I don't bleep anything usually
- 28:45later on down the road. There was one video Kenny did
- 28:48where he actually did the video. The whole point of it was about
- 28:51the F word. And I did I, I sent it through
- 28:54there and YouTube came back and said limited ad suitability.
- 28:59Meaning through their AI technology, they figured out
- 29:02there was too many F words. So I went back and bleeped them.
- 29:05So that's a long way of saying I don't know.
- 29:07I know this for for titles, you're not supposed to curse in
- 29:11the title. So sometimes I'll do like, you
- 29:14know, if you're saying shit, I'll say SH star T So I don't
- 29:20know. I don't know that it's an exact
- 29:21science. So you can just you can you can
- 29:23say whatever you want. Yeah, you know, you don't know
- 29:27my mentor. This you, you and Kenny Wallace.
- 29:29And I've listened to it. I'm like, man, I don't know.
- 29:32After I cuss, I'm like, should I've cussed?
- 29:34Well, it doesn't make any difference, right?
- 29:36So, but what were we talking about to get on?
- 29:38Oh, we're talking about what pisses Rick off.
- 29:40I really don't have anything, man.
- 29:42You know, still the same old thing, People driving in the
- 29:44left lane. I hate that fact.
- 29:45In Virginia, we've got these message boards all over the
- 29:48state, and about every four days they put up a big sign on the
- 29:51message boards. Driving left lane, get a ticket.
- 29:54Left lanes for passing, right lanes for driving right.
- 29:56We get all that stuff set. That's the main thing gets me.
- 29:59But you know, in the racing world, everything's just so
- 30:03good. There's nothing went on wrong.
- 30:06It's just a it's a lovely day in the neighborhood.
- 30:09It is. It's beautiful, especially it's
- 30:11always good on a Monday to start the week off.
- 30:14You shouldn't, you shouldn't be ticked off, right?
- 30:16You should have had a relaxing weekend and getting ready for a
- 30:19productive week. Now, how about story time, Rick?
- 30:23Mass story time. Anything you got, you know, it
- 30:25can be Bristol, you got Kansas coming up.
- 30:28It can be anything though, Rick. You know, Bristol, I think about
- 30:34I think about somebody I was watching Dale junior download
- 30:37last week, right, And somebody brought up today on the download
- 30:41a fan brought up the the Watkins Glen, the infamous Watkins Glen
- 30:48party that we had talked about on this show before.
- 30:51And and Dale was talking about this group of drivers that came
- 30:54into these busted in these motorhome and sit there talking
- 30:58to him. And Terry Labonte told him,
- 31:03Dale, you need to start wearing the Hans device.
- 31:05And I thought it was fun. You know, from, from, from day's
- 31:08perspective, he, you know, he said, I never spoke to tear the
- 31:11body in my life. I never said one word to tear
- 31:14the body. And all of a sudden here he's
- 31:16sitting in my motorhome telling me that I got to start wearing a
- 31:21Hans device and he's like, yeah, OK, that's what I'll do then,
- 31:24right? And it was, it was cool because
- 31:26he's talking about all these guys in the way, all these
- 31:29drivers that came in. And it was me, DJ Dale Jarrett,
- 31:32Bobby Labonte, Terra Labonte, Kid Schrader, we were all in
- 31:38there. And he was talking about the
- 31:39guys in the waiting years of their career coming into his
- 31:43motor home and telling him that he needs start wearing a Hans
- 31:48device, right? And he's like, well, these guys,
- 31:51I don't know who they are, but I've never talked to any of them
- 31:53much or whatever. But if that's what you're
- 31:55telling me I need to do, that's what I'm going to do, right?
- 31:58So anyhow, and he he was talking about Sterling Marlin and I
- 32:03called Dale. I said Dale.
- 32:05I said, yeah. He said couple of things to that
- 32:07story. Number one, it wasn't Sterling,
- 32:10it was me. Oh yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah,
- 32:12that's right. That's right.
- 32:13And I said the other part of that story is that you probably
- 32:16don't remember this, but we had a 8O clock practice that
- 32:21morning. So we're like whatever time our
- 32:24deal broke up. I don't know what time of the
- 32:27morning it was. It was late night or early
- 32:29morning and we had an 8 O clock practice the next morning.
- 32:36I pull down on pit Rd. in my race car and I pull right up
- 32:39beside the Budweiser car, which is Dale Junior pull up to the
- 32:42the right side of we're sitting there.
- 32:44I'm on the right side of him waiting to go out on the
- 32:46racetrack. All of a sudden he goes, he
- 32:51takes, he hits accelerator like 4 times or five times real, real
- 32:56hard and exhaust. The exhaust comes out right at
- 32:59my door, right. So all that noise and exhaust,
- 33:03he's throwing right on me hard as he can, you know, and I look
- 33:06over man, I'm like man, you know, he gets the bird.
- 33:11I give him the bird. Don't do that crap, man.
- 33:14He knew what he was doing. I mean, we were I think, I think
- 33:19all 5 drivers, maybe I might be wrong.
- 33:23I know some of us were, we were the slowest on the speed chart
- 33:26that morning on that is 8 O clock practice, right?
- 33:28But anyhow, when I gave him the bird, he laughed, did it again,
- 33:33right. So, but I thought it was neat.
- 33:37We've talked about that story many times.
- 33:38A lot of guys have, but I thought it was neat.
- 33:41His take was, you know, these guys, these veterans, these guys
- 33:45that I look up to, right, all came to buy motorhome and Terry
- 33:49told me to start wearing a Hans device.
- 33:52And I remember DJ added to it. You know, he said, babe, you're,
- 33:55you're the future of our sport. You are the future of our sport.
- 33:59You're the you're going to be the name of our sport to carry
- 34:01our sport for a lot of years to come.
- 34:04And we need you to be here. You know, this Hans device has
- 34:08already proven to save 3 or 4 guys lives at that point and it
- 34:11saved people, right? And we need we need you to be
- 34:15here. So you need to start wearing
- 34:17that and just that quick because of who said it to him.
- 34:21He's like, all right, all right, you know, you know, Dale Junior,
- 34:25all right, that's what I'm going to do.
- 34:26I'm going to wear the, I'm going to wear the Hans device.
- 34:28And you know, probably has saved him.
- 34:31You know, it probably has saved. I know it saved a lot of guys,
- 34:33dude. And man, I remember the first
- 34:36time I put a Hans on, we were at Homestead, Homestead, FL and I
- 34:43put the Hans on. I went out, I ran 3 or 4
- 34:45practice laps. I come in, they Jack the car up.
- 34:48And you got to understand when you when you're practicing, you
- 34:50cut in those days, you come in, the guys grab the race car,
- 34:54you're hollering, you're talking to the crew chief and or
- 34:56engineer, you're looking around, the guys are changing springs,
- 34:59shocks, whatever. You're in the car, you're
- 35:00looking here and looking there, you know, you're barking,
- 35:02talking, yapping with a Hans device.
- 35:05You're sitting here like this, right?
- 35:07And all this stuff's going on and I can't move my head right
- 35:10either way. And I'm like, I'm getting
- 35:12frustrated, right? Just being 4040 years, 30 years
- 35:16at a race car, doing it one way and all of a sudden you can't
- 35:18move your head. I remember thinking, when this
- 35:20practice is over, I'm taking this stupid damn thing off,
- 35:23right? We go out there, Charlie, I run
- 35:262 laps, go by the start finish. I go into turn one on the second
- 35:29lap, the right front tire blows right?
- 35:32And if you've raced long enough, you know the angle of attack,
- 35:35you know the speed, you know what kind of hits coming.
- 35:39And this is one of those deals like uh oh, this you know I
- 35:43don't know if I'm going to survive this right?
- 35:45It was one of those in race car drivers.
- 35:47Y'all know what I'm talking about here right?
- 35:50Well that thing went into that wall and it hit so frigging hard
- 35:52and I remember when it hit everything grabbed when it
- 35:55bounced off the wall and stopped.
- 35:57I remember, I remember I'm like, damn, I'm not hurt.
- 36:03What's the deal in my procedure that I would go through?
- 36:05I think we've talked about it. You know, when I take hard licks
- 36:08or hard wrecks, once it stopped, if my head was down, I would
- 36:12kind of wiggle both about toes on my feet and try to see them.
- 36:16And if they work, then I would kind of look up and try to work
- 36:19both hands right. And if they worked, I'm like,
- 36:21OK, then we'd start getting getting ready to get out of the
- 36:24race car. But that thing hit so hard,
- 36:27Charlie, I'm telling you, it seemed like when I got out of
- 36:30the car, Mike Hilton and I forget if it's Gary Nelson.
- 36:37Anyhow, they were in the tower. They had come out of the tower,
- 36:42come down to the racetrack and were there with me at the race
- 36:45car. When I getting out of the race
- 36:47car, they thought they had another fatality.
- 36:50I mean, Mike really felt like, you know, it's one of those
- 36:53deals in the car. Honestly, the right front tire
- 36:55up into the dash like it was, it was a tremendous, terrible lift.
- 36:59There's no doubt, you know, if I hadn't had the Hans device on,
- 37:03you know, I wouldn't survive that.
- 37:04It's just, you know, anyhow, I remember telling, like Gary, I
- 37:08said, guys, I said this is the aggravating thing.
- 37:11I was getting ready to take it off.
- 37:12I said, let me tell you something.
- 37:14I said you need to not ever let anybody get in one of these race
- 37:18cars ever again unless they're wearing this Hans device because
- 37:21I'm telling you it just saved my life, I think, or saved me from
- 37:25big time injury, right? And you know, from that moment
- 37:29forward, I was I was sold on the Hans device.
- 37:31And then watching after that, watching guys impacts and seeing
- 37:36what happened, I'm like, man, this deal has saved a lot of
- 37:39lives. I mean, it truly has that the
- 37:41soft wall. Goodness gracious.
- 37:43But anyhow, back to Dale Junior. That was AI thought that was a
- 37:46neat take. That was a neat take for me for
- 37:48him to look at it that way. And that's why that's why Dale's
- 37:53so popular today. I mean, he, he, he understands
- 37:55that he understands the history for sport.
- 37:57I mean, you watch any of his stuff, he's always done this
- 37:59crap. He's always had older people own
- 38:01older drivers, always looking back at the at the stories and,
- 38:04and what got him to where we're at now, you know, and that's,
- 38:07that's, that adds to his popularity band and I'm, I'm
- 38:10happy for him. Yeah, and that was very evident
- 38:13Friday. That was pretty cool that that
- 38:16night became the Xfinity race all about Dale Earnhardt junior.
- 38:20And you know what? I I think that's cool once a
- 38:23year because look, you, you need reasons, especially for casual
- 38:27fans to watch the Xfinity race and for one race a year to kind
- 38:31of be the, the Dale Earnhardt junior show.
- 38:33I thought that was pretty cool. Yeah.
- 38:35And gosh, that show, you know, we talked about these guys,
- 38:41Charlie, when I came along, you're from when I was 1615,
- 38:46first time in the race car all up through the day, I retired
- 38:49you. When you would move up a
- 38:50division or move up a class, you had these heroes or guys that
- 38:54you had to look up to or you looked up to and you had to
- 38:57outrun. If you're going to advance, you
- 38:58had to outrun them and you had to go on, right?
- 39:00And but each step along the way, I was taught, I was taught
- 39:04lessons. I was taught, you know, what it
- 39:07really meant to get in a fight, what it really meant to, if
- 39:10you're going to fight, OK, we're going to fight.
- 39:12But here's what here's the ramifications, right?
- 39:14That's what we learned. It's much easier to talk about
- 39:16it, drink a beer than fight. But anyhow, you, you learn,
- 39:19especially when you get into NASCAR and you get into Xfinity
- 39:22or Bush and you get into Cup, you learn from the guys that's
- 39:25been there way before you, how you act, how you react, how you
- 39:30drive, how you race. You learn all that and how you
- 39:34conduct yourselves. And one of the frustrating parts
- 39:39was for some of the people over the last few years, the, the,
- 39:42the, the Tony Stewart's, right? The Martin Truex's some degree.
- 39:47The, the, you know, the Mark Martins, these guys as the, the
- 39:51new guys came along. This, this, the art has changed.
- 39:56The art of driving has changed, right?
- 39:58And for whatever reasons, it seems like we don't have anybody
- 40:04teaching or showing. The guys, the doer guys, the way
- 40:09right, whether it's, I don't know, it's just naturally
- 40:12happened. I don't know.
- 40:14But the the deal with Junior in the Xfinity race is OK.
- 40:19We raced here we are. We got a big cooler.
- 40:22We're out on Pit Rd. Here's a bunch of ice and here's
- 40:24a big cooler of beer, Big tub of beer.
- 40:26We're on Pit Rd. man. We're laughing.
- 40:28You know, it it, it talked about the racing.
- 40:32That's what was so fun in the older days, right?
- 40:35Especially the Bush series and Late Models.
- 40:38And the guys doing late model stock the car store.
- 40:40All these guys, they get out of the race car and they sit back
- 40:43and drink beer. And they unless two guys are
- 40:45fighting each other, it's usually sitting back and
- 40:47everybody's having a big time talking about the race and
- 40:50talking about how he should have kicked his ass and he should
- 40:52have outrun him and he didn't outrun him.
- 40:54Talking about the race cars. All the drivers used to do that
- 40:57a lot. And as we've gone on, it's
- 40:59saying it's a modernized itself to where, you know, we the guys
- 41:02just don't do that anymore, you know, because of media, because
- 41:06of time constraints, you know, that stuff doesn't go on.
- 41:09And I guess it's it's something that the guys today are missing
- 41:14and they don't know they're missing.
- 41:16And it's a shame because they could have a lot more fun with
- 41:19this if they could do stuff like that.
- 41:21But you know, those days are gone.
- 41:23They're over with. But I, I, to your point, I
- 41:25thought it was cool that junior shows say, hey, guys, look here,
- 41:28here's what we can do right when the race is over, here's what we
- 41:32can do to have a little fun with this.
- 41:33We just raced. Let's have some more fun with
- 41:35this. And it kind of, it kind of
- 41:37throws back and I, I thought it was very, very cool.
- 41:40Very cool. So hey, your story earlier about
- 41:43the Hans device, what track was that at?
- 41:45HOMESTEAD, FL. Homestead, OK Homestead, FL I
- 41:48asked, I asked first a couple questions on YouTube and we got
- 41:52we got a couple good ones. So let's see here.
- 41:55Corndogger 61 Corndogger 61 says.
- 41:58Hi Rick. How did it feel to flip in 1991
- 42:01at Talladega? Was it weird and what can you
- 42:03remember from it? Hey Corndogger.
- 42:05Thanks, man. What's a hell of a name?
- 42:08Corn Dog or corn dog? We were coming through the trial
- 42:12and I had moved down. I was racing.
- 42:14It was Davy. Allison was in front of me and
- 42:17me and Buddy Baker's behind me. I moved down through the trial.
- 42:20Well, I had a little run to try to run by Davy and Buddy's
- 42:23behind me on my left rear and he didn't move right and he clipped
- 42:27me and turned the car sideways at it.
- 42:31You know those situations, once you're up in there, it just gets
- 42:33real quiet and all of a sudden you realize that you're the
- 42:35realization that, uh oh, I'm in trouble here.
- 42:39That car. One of the things about that
- 42:41thing, it's a couple things happened.
- 42:42Somebody asked me one time, I said, Rick, what were you doing
- 42:45when he's upside down? I said, man, I was just hanging
- 42:46on. What you mean he said, well,
- 42:48you're still driving. I said no, I don't guess so.
- 42:50We'll come back and look the tape.
- 42:51All four wheels with his upside down were spinning and at some
- 42:54point they stopped. In other words, when I was
- 42:58upside down, at some point, I pushed the brake pedal.
- 43:00Whoa, baby, whoa. Because all four, all four
- 43:03wheels stop spinning. So I like, yeah, you hit the
- 43:05brakes upside down, like, that's going to do a lot of good,
- 43:08right? And then hit the outside wall.
- 43:10Remember, hit, hit the wall tremendously and it slid.
- 43:13You know, you're just holding on, hoping, hoping nobody hit
- 43:16you, hoping it doesn't take off. Tomlin, you know, it finally
- 43:18stops. I remember when it stopped, the,
- 43:21the, the a post bar was all smashed down on me and I
- 43:23couldn't come out the left side, But I, I saw a light which was
- 43:27the right side of the door window.
- 43:29And I'm like, well, that's where I need to go.
- 43:31But but the, the, the bar, the bars were all caved in on me so
- 43:34tight it had to be kind of wedged.
- 43:36So I got my gloves off and I got my helmet off.
- 43:39And I remember a safety worker stuck.
- 43:41He's he kind of crawled down. He's up in the car with me a
- 43:44little bit. He's Ricky.
- 43:44All right. Yeah, well, hold on here a
- 43:46little bit. We're going to get you out of
- 43:47here. I said, man, you better get the
- 43:48hell out of my way. I'm coming out of here, right.
- 43:50And it was funny story that a year later he came up to me.
- 43:53He said, Rick, I'm back guy. He said get the hell out of the
- 43:55way. I said, dude, I appreciate it.
- 43:57I appreciate it. But but anyhow, neat part of
- 44:01that story. Buddy Baker I had got when buddy
- 44:05got hurt, I drove for his car. I drove his car at Bristol and
- 44:11Darlington. He gave my first shot at whist
- 44:12the cut. It's like that 1988 Bristol and
- 44:15Darlington when when they came back around, I was sitting there
- 44:21wrecked. Excuse me?
- 44:23Buddy gets on the radio if he's spotter.
- 44:25The spotter tells me this three or four years later, Buddy gets
- 44:29on the radio. Is Rick out of the car?
- 44:31The spotter says no, Buddy, he's he's still in the car.
- 44:34Well, Buddy spends the next lap going around upset.
- 44:39If the Potter says he as the spotter says he almost starts
- 44:42crying. He said, Oh my God, he said I've
- 44:43done killed Rick. He said, I give that boy his
- 44:45first, his first, right in this, in this sport.
- 44:50He says, I love him to death. He's a good boy.
- 44:53He's got that little boy son. He is his wife.
- 44:55Oh, hell, what are we going to do?
- 44:57I've killed him. I don't know, Spider says.
- 44:59He's almost crying, comes back around.
- 45:02He comes back around and the I'm out of the car.
- 45:07He says, is that Ricky out of the car?
- 45:09Spotter says, yeah, I've been trying to tell you, buddy, but
- 45:11he wouldn't, You wouldn't stop. And he says he's OK.
- 45:14He said yeah, he's out here walking around.
- 45:16Well, let me tell you something, all these little young buck
- 45:18drivers come in here like asshole is running all over the
- 45:20racetrack. I ain't putting up that shit he
- 45:22cut down on by ass and I'm going to turn his ass.
- 45:24He he's not going to turn down on me.
- 45:26You know, I don't care who they are, they're not, you know, blah
- 45:28blah blah. He went from crying and loving
- 45:32me, right? And you turn the switch off in 3
- 45:35seconds. Now he's cussing me for he
- 45:38wrecked me, but it's my fault that he wrecked me, right?
- 45:40It was, it was, it was a weird deal.
- 45:43Funny deal, but but strange but funny.
- 45:46I like it. All right.
- 45:47Another good question. This one is from iRacing Aussie.
- 45:50This person is from Perth, WA. How would peak 1994 Dale
- 45:57Earnhardt senior do in this current generation of Cup car?
- 46:01Would he approach the format by dominating the regular season,
- 46:05or would he save his best for the playoffs?
- 46:07Well, it would be every lap. It wouldn't make a shit to him.
- 46:11Listen to me, dude. It wouldn't make it wouldn't
- 46:13make any difference to him. Every lap at every race he's
- 46:17going to run it. Today's deal, today's
- 46:19generation, last one, it doesn't matter.
- 46:21Every lap he's going to run. That thing is absolutely out of
- 46:24control, wide open, hard as he can run it, there's no, there'd
- 46:27be no hold back. It never was with Dale.
- 46:29That wasn't his mentality. He couldn't, he couldn't
- 46:32function with that mentality. If he tried to race with that
- 46:34mentality, he would not be Dale Earnhardt wouldn't work.
- 46:36So that's a very easy question to answer.
- 46:39All right, let's end on this one.
- 46:41A local a local question for you.
- 46:43This is Dubs in Virginia 3572. Ask him.
- 46:49So ask Rick what he thinks about a local racing family from his
- 46:52hometown. Tommy Bear.
- 46:54Is it Booper Bear? It is.
- 46:56Booper Bear and Tyler Bear, thanks.
- 46:59Yeah, they live. They live about probably 2 miles
- 47:04from me. The way the Crow crow flies,
- 47:06that fan, that family, very, very integral part of local
- 47:13racing scene here. When my dad built that racetrack
- 47:16in 67, Tommy is one of the first guys that raced right and he
- 47:21made a legacy and he started branching out and going to a lot
- 47:24of race tracks. He won tons of races, tons of
- 47:26championships. Then his son came along, Booper,
- 47:29Booper Bear and Booper kind of followed in.
- 47:32Tommy Lee or Tommy Lee. I called him Tommy Lee, but his
- 47:35name is Tommy. He followed in Tommy's footsteps
- 47:40and you know, started winning races, very talented, all these
- 47:43guys very talented, very good, winning championships, going a
- 47:48lot of places. He he ran two or three different
- 47:50series and won a ton of races, ton of series.
- 47:53And now his son has come along Tyler and Tyler's just fell
- 47:57right in. So his granddad and his daddy, I
- 47:59mean, he, he wins races everywhere they go.
- 48:01They win, right? And they're just farmers.
- 48:05Tommy, Tommy Lee is a farmer big.
- 48:07They go falling back here. And that's, that's what they do
- 48:09for a living. They farm and then they, they
- 48:12race. And in fact, that Natural Bridge
- 48:14head to Tommy Bear memorial race this past weekend at Natural
- 48:18Bridge. This, this was the second year
- 48:20for that. And I don't know so many people
- 48:24like Tommy Lee or Tommy. And in this Shenandoah Valley,
- 48:27so many great family, great race car drivers, great families,
- 48:32great racing families right up and down this valley.
- 48:35So just I'm just cherished to to live here and be a part of it.
- 48:40I love it. You know what, we're going to
- 48:41end there anyway. And then your clock was was
- 48:44beeping. So that's the perfect way to to
- 48:47end the show here. A good local grassroots racing
- 48:50story. I think we covered a lot.
- 48:52Rick, what do you think? That's it, baby.
- 48:54Can't. It doesn't get any better than
- 48:55this. Charlie.
- 48:55Thank you. All right, well, thank you Sir.
- 48:58Thank you all for watching the Rick Mass show.
- 49:00Please comment, like, subscribe, share the videos, share the the
- 49:04shows, put them in your group chats, put them on social media,
- 49:07get the word out and we will come back and do one again soon.
- 49:10See you buddy. See you, Charlie.
- 49:13Bye.
