- Lucas: Hey everyone. Welcome back to Learn Swahili with Fexingo. Luna: Hi! It is so good to be here again. Lucas: If Fexingo has been helping you make actual progress with this language, we want to say a quick thank you. Luna: We deliberately do not run ads on these episodes. Lucas: If you want to support that choice, the link is buy me a coffee dot com slash fexingo — that's F. E. X. I. N. G. O. Luna: Yeah. Totally. It keeps things clean. Lucas: And then we can get back to where we were last time. Luna: Right. Last week was the beach. So let us talk about the beach today. Lucas: Yes. The beach. In Swahili, the word for beach or coast is pwani. Luna: Pwani. Okay. That sounds like wind. Lucas: It does. Let us try it. Pwani. Luna: Pwani. Lucas: Good. Now let us add some feeling to it. Pwani ni nzuri sana. Luna: Pwani ni nzuri sana. Lucas: That means 'The beach is very beautiful.' Or 'very nice.' Try it again. Luna: Pwani ni nzuri sana. Lucas: There you go. Very natural. Imagine you are standing there. The sun is out. You look at the water. Luna: And you say: Pwani ni nzuri sana. Lucas: Exactly. You feel happy. You tell your friend: Pwani ni nzuri sana. Luna: Pwani ni nzuri sana. I love that phrase. Lucas: Let us move to what you do there. Walking. To walk is kutembea. Luna: Kutembea. I think I know that one. Lucas: You might. But let us use it now. Ninapenda kutembea. Luna: Ninapenda kutembea. Lucas: That means 'I like to walk.' Now, where? On the sand. Sand is mchanga. Luna: Mchanga. Got it. Lucas: So, on the sand is kwenye mchanga. Put it all together. Luna: Ninapenda kutembea kwenye mchanga. Lucas: Perfect. 'I like walking on the sand.' Say it one more time. Luna: Ninapenda kutembea kwenye mchanga. Lucas: Great. Now, imagine you are walking. The light is perfect. You want a picture. Luna: Oh yes. A photo. Lucas: To take a photo or photograph someone is kupiga picha, but the verb form for the action is often used in the question structure. Luna: Okay. How do I ask my friend to take my picture? Lucas: You can say: Je, unaweza kunifotografia? Luna: Je, unaweza kunifotografia? Lucas: That means 'Can you photograph me?' Or 'Can you take my photo?' Try it slowly. Luna: Je, unaweza kunifotografia? Lucas: Very good. Unaweza means 'can you'. Kuni- means 'me'. Fotografia is the action. Luna: So, Je, unaweza kunifotografia? Lucas: Exactly. Just like that. Luna: I feel like I am already there. The waves are crashing. Lucas: They are. And you turn to your companion. Luna: And I say: Pwani ni nzuri sana. Lucas: Yes. Because it is true. Then you keep walking. Luna: And I say: Ninapenda kutembea kwenye mchanga. Lucas: Because you love the feeling under your feet. And then you stop. Luna: And I smile. And I say: Je, unaweza kunifotografia? Lucas: And your friend smiles back and says yes. Luna: That would be amazing. Lucas: Let us review the three phrases quickly. Luna: Okay. First one. Lucas: Pwani ni nzuri sana. Luna: Pwani ni nzuri sana. Lucas: Second one. Luna: Ninapenda kutembea kwenye mchanga. Lucas: Third one. Luna: Je, unaweza kunifotografia? Lucas: Excellent work today. Luna: Thank you, Lucas. Lucas: Practice these until we chat again. Luna: See you next time.
