- 0:00Welcome to Tabernacle Talk. Tabernacle Talk is a Bible study
- 0:03podcast brought from Tabernacle Baptist Church in Essex, MD.
- 0:07I'm your host, Brian Self. We hope this podcast encourages
- 0:10you to know Christ, grow in his word and show his love to
- 0:14others. Let's dive right in.
- 0:15Welcome back to the Tabernacle Talk.
- 0:17I hope that you're having a good day.
- 0:19Today we are in Psalm 119 and we are looking at the Hebrew
- 0:25letter. Hey, hey, you no, not that it is
- 0:30the Hebrew letter and I actually recognize this letter because
- 0:35I've I've seen what's called the Tetragrammaton that is the
- 0:39Hebrew name for God. So the Lord in all caps or
- 0:45you'll hear me say Yahweh. It's YHWH is kind of how we
- 0:52would read those letters in English as we're reading the
- 0:57Hebrew alphabet. And so I recognized, oh, I know
- 1:01this letter because this is a part of God's covenant name.
- 1:06And so it's actually right after the initial word in the Psalm.
- 1:13So verses 33 through 40 are what we're going through today.
- 1:18In case I didn't say that yet, verses 33 through 40 are the
- 1:21verses that we're looking at in Psalm 119.
- 1:23All of these verses start with the Hebrew letter.
- 1:27But right after that very first word in this portion of
- 1:31Scripture, then you have teach me Yahweh the meaning of Your
- 1:35statutes. And so that word is right there.
- 1:38So I'm going to read through. And then I have three challenges
- 1:42from the Word that I think we can adopt even from this portion
- 1:46of Scripture. As I've mentioned Psalm 119,
- 1:49it's all about the Word of God. And so we're going to learn
- 1:52about God's decrees, his way of living, what he has told us
- 1:57about himself and about our world, and about the story that
- 2:00he is writing as a result. So let's begin verse 33.
- 2:06Teach me Yahweh the meaning of your statutes and I will always
- 2:10keep them. Help me understand your
- 2:13instruction and I will obey it and follow it with all my heart.
- 2:17Help me stay on the path of Your commands, for I take pleasure in
- 2:22it. Turn my heart to your decrees
- 2:25and not to dishonest prophet. Turn my eyes from looking at
- 2:30what is worthless. Give me life in Your ways.
- 2:34Confirm what you said to your servant, for it produces
- 2:37reverence for you. Turn away the disgrace that I
- 2:41dread. Indeed, your judgments are good.
- 2:45How I long for your precepts. Give me life through your
- 2:50righteousness. All right, I love in these.
- 2:55There's just so many facets all the way through someone 19 so
- 2:59many facets of as you look at what God has communicated to you
- 3:04and to I how we think about it and what it means and what it
- 3:08tells us about who we are, what it tells us about what our
- 3:10future is about how it can change our our circumstances,
- 3:16our environments. There's just so much beauty to
- 3:19be found in looking over US, adopting what the Lord has
- 3:27called us to do through His eternal Word.
- 3:31So I see first today that we must allow God to reshape us by
- 3:36His word. We need God to reshape, to
- 3:39change us by His Word. I can see this especially in
- 3:44verses 33 through 35. He says teach me Yahweh the
- 3:48meaning of your statutes and I will always keep them.
- 3:52We talked about last episode the fact that learning the Word of
- 3:57God, learning spiritual truth is not just like memorizing for a
- 4:02test. We actually need the Holy Spirit
- 4:05to illuminate the Word of God to us.
- 4:09We need to learn about the Word of God from the Spirit of God.
- 4:15And as I mentioned last time, the Spirit of God will sometimes
- 4:18use the people of God to do that.
- 4:20And So what I noticed here in the instructions, he says this
- 4:24pleading, this praying to the Lord teach me.
- 4:27He says, help me in verse 34, help me understand your
- 4:30instruction and verse 35, help me stay on the path of your
- 4:35commands. There is this request from the
- 4:38psalmist to say, God, I, I know some things about your word.
- 4:45I, I know the stories of Genesis and of Exodus.
- 4:48I've heard about what you did with the children of Israel in
- 4:51Numbers and in Deuteronomy. I heard about how you set up the
- 4:55relationship with us in Leviticus.
- 4:58But God, I need to know not just what it says, I need to know
- 5:02what it means and specifically what it means for my
- 5:05relationship with You. Because I want to keep these
- 5:09statutes. I want to obey them.
- 5:11I want to follow them with all of my heart and I want to stay
- 5:15on the path that they outline for how I ought to live.
- 5:20And certainly, even as we now have the complete and total word
- 5:25of God, we don't just have a few books.
- 5:27We've got the whole thing that God has outlined for us.
- 5:31And certainly we can echo with this psalmist, God, I need you
- 5:35to help reshape me because the way that I talk is not the way
- 5:40that God would talk. The way that I treat other
- 5:44people isn't the way that God would want me to, the way that
- 5:48I, I, I was thinking about this the other day, the way that I
- 5:54interact with the world that God has given me.
- 5:57I is not what's right. I think about for, for many
- 6:01people, they're going to do, you know, New Year's goals and New
- 6:05Year's resolutions. And I've got someones that I
- 6:08have written down that I'm honestly, I, I'm really praying
- 6:12over to say God, I want this to be a change, several changes
- 6:17that I'm making as a result of my faith in you and my desire to
- 6:22do what you want me to with my life.
- 6:27I don't want it to just be OK. Yeah.
- 6:29Now Brian has become more disciplined than he was in the
- 6:31your previous. I want to be closer to God.
- 6:35But if that's going to happen, then I need the word of God to
- 6:39reshape me. So specifically some of the
- 6:41things I'm thinking through. For a lot of people, they have
- 6:44struggles with God is given food, but they eat too much food
- 6:50or they don't share food with others.
- 6:53For some people, you know God has has given us drinks, but
- 6:57perhaps they might drink too much or there should be some
- 7:00things that they shouldn't drink and yet they do.
- 7:04God has given us people or spouses that we are to love and
- 7:09to care for and we don't treat them well or we utilize our body
- 7:15and our sexuality in ways that God does not want us to.
- 7:19He has not decreed that we should with which is within the
- 7:22bonds of marriage between a man and a woman faithfully together
- 7:27for one lifetime until, as the marriage vows say, until death
- 7:31does its part. And so in all these things, we
- 7:34need God to reshape the way that we interact with our world.
- 7:39God has given us money, but some of us operate in greed instead
- 7:43of in generosity. And so I want to ask, Lord,
- 7:47would you reshape me through your word?
- 7:50May I choose to value, may I choose to proportion out my life
- 7:56in a way that is honoring to you and I love what the psalmist
- 8:00here says. He says, God, when you teach me
- 8:02what your statutes mean, I'm going to keep those statutes.
- 8:05God, when you help me understand your instruction, I'm going to
- 8:08obey it and I'm going to follow it with all of my heart.
- 8:11Frankly, it if you purport to be a Christian, you ought to say,
- 8:18God, it does not matter anymore what I want.
- 8:22What matters is what you want. And so God, if you say, hey,
- 8:26this person shouldn't be in your life during this season, they
- 8:30are a bad influence on you and you are not good at saying no to
- 8:34them right now, then we ought to say, OK, God, I will release
- 8:38this friendship for the time being.
- 8:40If God says, hey, you need to cut out, you know, it could be
- 8:43different for all sorts of people.
- 8:45You need to cut out all desserts, you know, for the time
- 8:49being, or you need to cut out drinking.
- 8:52You need to intentionally choose to invest some portion of your
- 8:59paychecks into the Kingdom of God or into caring for those
- 9:02less fortunate or into this or that.
- 9:05We ought to say God. Whatever it is that you want
- 9:07from me, I will allow you to change me.
- 9:11So first, allow God to reshape you by his word.
- 9:13Secondly, we should shift our focus from this world to the
- 9:18word. We should shift our focus from
- 9:21this world to the word. I can see this in verses 36 and
- 9:2537 where he says turn my heart to your decrees and not to
- 9:30dishonest prophet. Turn my eyes from looking at
- 9:34what is worthless. Give me life in your ways here,
- 9:39dishonest prophet and worthless things, those that have no
- 9:44lasting value here. What is worthless is futile.
- 9:49It's inconsequential. The temptation force is always
- 9:54to keep our eyes on earth that we say OK if I can just get 5
- 9:59million in the bank then I will be set for the rest of my life.
- 10:04I can have a, a great retirement and I will be OK so long as this
- 10:10money is here and I have confidence in this that
- 10:14everything will be fine or we think OK, this perhaps hobby
- 10:19that I have. This is what I'm going to
- 10:21totally give all of my life and my attention to this will define
- 10:26me. You know, I, I enjoy video
- 10:29games, but I know that there's people in our world that spend
- 10:32way too much time on it. Like I'll, I'll play every maybe
- 10:36like two or three weeks predominantly on my day off.
- 10:40And there are people that every single night it's just straight
- 10:43to video games and they're playing for hours and hours and
- 10:46hours. And maybe it might be to the
- 10:48detriment of their souls that they're not spending time with
- 10:50God. It could be to the detriment of
- 10:52their family relationships or friendships or being able to
- 10:56minister to their neighbors. There are 1000 different ways
- 11:00that someone could be focusing on the here and now instead of
- 11:05the hereafter. And so here the psalmist says,
- 11:07God, would you turn my heart, my soul, my inner affection to
- 11:13God's decrees, to the word of God and not to dishonest
- 11:17prophet. He says, God, my tendency is
- 11:19going to be that my soul wants greed, my soul wants money, my
- 11:24soul wants the padded 4O1K, my soul wants to win the Powerball.
- 11:28And so everything that I'm thinking and doing and working
- 11:31towards is towards either money or what I can gain as a result
- 11:36of money. You might be like, well, listen,
- 11:38I'm not all that serious about money.
- 11:40But yes, I do really love, you know, collecting insane amounts
- 11:46of this thing or that thing or I want to go on 27 trips this next
- 11:52year and just to see all the sites all across the world.
- 11:57And so that's what I'm going to do.
- 11:59And here the psalmist says, no, God, I want you to take my soul
- 12:03and the deepest parts of me that are set towards money or towards
- 12:09what money can give me, and I want you to turn my innermost
- 12:13affections towards your word. And that's not just like, oh
- 12:16man, I love the Bibles a lot. Now, there's certainly we can
- 12:20and should love the Bible. It is that we would follow God's
- 12:24way. It's his direction and that's
- 12:27what we are pressing towards. And then verse 37, he says, turn
- 12:32my eyes from looking at what is worthless.
- 12:34So he says first God Orient my soul, my innermost being towards
- 12:38your word, not towards money or what I can gain.
- 12:40And then he says turn my eyes. That is what I'm actually like
- 12:44looking at all the time. Help me to not focus on what
- 12:48fades away, what is temporary, what in 50 or 100 years I will
- 12:54not care one iota about and instead have my focus be the
- 12:58ways of God. He says, turn my eyes from
- 13:00looking at what is worthless. Give me life in your ways.
- 13:04You can find true, real, meaningful, impactful, joy
- 13:09filled life in the things of God and in the ways of God and
- 13:13caring for others and loving them and sharing the gospel and
- 13:16being a light in your city or in your family or in your
- 13:20workplace. It is the best life.
- 13:23It is the life that God made us for.
- 13:25And so ask the Lord God, would you help me to shift my focus
- 13:29from this world to the word? That doesn't mean, OK, I'm going
- 13:33to become a monk and I'm just going to spend all of my time
- 13:36pouring over the Scriptures. Pouring over the scriptures is
- 13:39great, but God has called us to actually be involved in the
- 13:43lives of others. We'd be involved at our job,
- 13:46involved in our neighborhood, involved in our family.
- 13:49And so may we allow God to shift our focus from the temporary to
- 13:54the eternal. Then lastly today jump into what
- 13:58God has guaranteed and see him come through for you every time.
- 14:03Jump into what God has guaranteed and see him come
- 14:06through for you every time. I see this in verses 38 through
- 14:1140, he says confirm what you said to your servant for it
- 14:15produces reverence for you. He says God I respect you and I
- 14:19think you are amazing when you confirm what you said to me.
- 14:24Hear this word of God, that when we think about the promise from
- 14:29Hebrews 13 that I will never leave you or forsake you.
- 14:32So be content with such things as you have when I think about
- 14:37the promise of Jesus. By this shall all men know that
- 14:41you are my disciples. If you have love for one
- 14:44another. I think of the promise in Isaiah
- 14:47that God's Word will not return to him empty, but it will
- 14:51accomplish the purpose that He sent it to accomplish.
- 14:55I think about the truth in Malachi actually, that we went
- 14:59over man probably a couple months ago now, but in Malachi
- 15:04where he told the children of Israel, prove me now and see if
- 15:09you bring your tithe in. See if I will not pour out a
- 15:13blessing from heaven on you so that you won't even be able to
- 15:17bear it. Or the somewhat similar line in
- 15:19Second Corinthians where Paul tells the Corinthian believers
- 15:23that as they give to the Lord's work and as the Macedonian
- 15:27churches like Philip, I had already experienced that as they
- 15:31gave to the Lord's work that God poured out grace and new ability
- 15:38for them to be able to accomplish God's will.
- 15:41And so here when he says confirm what you said to your servant,
- 15:44the thing that it sparks in my mind is God help me to jump in,
- 15:49to help me to act in faith and belief based on what your word
- 15:54has promised. Of course, at its most basic
- 15:57level, this is turn your life over to Jesus Christ as your
- 16:01Lord and your Savior, as you repent of your sin as you like.
- 16:04I did when I was nine years old and I realized that I had never
- 16:10personally placed my faith in Jesus.
- 16:12I'd grown up in church. I knew a lot of verses.
- 16:14I knew a lot of songs. I attended church all the time,
- 16:17but I realized that I'd never personally placed my faith in
- 16:20Jesus. Turn my life over to him, if you
- 16:22will. I'd never tossed him the keys
- 16:24and said, Jesus, take the wheel. And at nine years old, I said,
- 16:29Jesus, I know that I'm a Sinner. I know that you came and you
- 16:34died for me on the cross and you were buried and you rose again.
- 16:39I, I believe that you will forgive all of my sins.
- 16:42Would you come into my life and save me and help me to live for
- 16:46you. And I did that at nine years old
- 16:49and I'm so glad that I jumped into what God is guaranteed that
- 16:53those that come to Jesus, He will never for any reason cast
- 16:57out. And the same is true for you
- 16:59today. If you have never turned your
- 17:00life over to Jesus, you've never repented of your sin and said,
- 17:04Jesus, I'm no longer the one in charge of my life.
- 17:07You're the one in charge now. You can make that decision even
- 17:10today. And I would invite you to do
- 17:12that. You can just scroll back just a
- 17:15couple like a 2 minutes, and you can listen to that kind of
- 17:20prayer that I prayed when I was 8 years old.
- 17:23It's not magic words or anything that saves you, but as you from
- 17:26the heart give your life over to Christ.
- 17:29Scripture says that whoever calls on the name of the Lord
- 17:32will be saved. And then if you truly have
- 17:35placed your faith in Christ, I encourage you to get baptized at
- 17:39a local church. If you're here in the Essex
- 17:42area, would certainly love to baptize you right here at
- 17:45Tabernacle Baptist. And but that would be a
- 17:48wonderful thing for you to do to say God, you've said this.
- 17:52And so I'm going to hold you to your word.
- 17:53I'm going to prove that you are trustworthy, but you can never
- 17:57prove that God is trustworthy unless you jump out into the
- 18:01deep. You got to be like Peter
- 18:02stepping out of the boat onto the water to prove that when
- 18:06Jesus said, yeah, you know, come to me and you can walk on the
- 18:09water like I can. We got to step out of the boat
- 18:15and I love that that God comes through for us every time.
- 18:18Verse 39 turn away the disgrace. I dread indeed, your judgments
- 18:23are good. We fear what will happen if we
- 18:25step out in faith and follow the Lord in some area where maybe
- 18:29we're sacrificing a little bit of who we feel we are.
- 18:32There's some sin that has become so much a part of our lives that
- 18:35to give it up, to give up the addiction, to give up the the
- 18:40relationship that we shouldn't be in, to give up our desire for
- 18:45bitterness or unforgiveness feels like we're dying and we're
- 18:49worried about what will happen if we give up that part of us to
- 18:52the Lord. But can I tell you God over and
- 18:55over and over again, He confirms what he has said, and it
- 18:59produces reverence for him when he does it.
- 19:02So put God to the test in that way and see him be wonderful in
- 19:08your life. I've been attaching to every one
- 19:10of these through Psalm 119. A there's a group called Still
- 19:16Creek and they have been recording songs based on each of
- 19:22these individual sections in Psalm 119.
- 19:25And so you can look at the show notes or the, you know,
- 19:28description on YouTube or on Facebook for all of these
- 19:32episodes. And you can listen to a song
- 19:34that people have written about these particular sections of
- 19:39Psalm 119. And I know it'll be an
- 19:41encouragement to you. I've been really blessed through
- 19:43listening to them this year. Well, thank you for tuning in.
- 19:46See you next episode.
