- 0:00Particularly in the West historically, but more and more
- 0:04a worldwide phenomenon in the modern era, there is a strong
- 0:09bias toward the idea that one needs to be a self-made man,
- 0:13implying that it is through individual strength and
- 0:16accomplishment that one can accomplish anything.
- 0:20This bias is something of an illusion even in the external
- 0:25world and its results, as much of the success we see in the
- 0:29world may be the result of family or school connections or
- 0:33just being in the right place at the right time.
- 0:37There is no doubt that in some cases a particular individual
- 0:41exhibits some high capacity in some direction or another and
- 0:45receives the positive fruits of his efforts.
- 0:49Great inventors, athletes, artists, musicians all provide
- 0:54testimony to the value of individual strength and
- 0:58capacity. Yet if we examine closely, we
- 1:02find that success in the world and individual strength are not
- 1:07necessarily linked to one another all that closely, and
- 1:11that other powers are at play. When we turn our focus to the
- 1:16inner life, to spiritual development, we find that there
- 1:21can be a similar bias with a similar element of illusion
- 1:25involved. We observe individuals who are
- 1:28able to undertake extreme austerities, practice advanced
- 1:32techniques of hatha yoga, or enter into states of deep
- 1:36meditation, and we believe that these must be highly advanced
- 1:40spiritual beings as well they might be.
- 1:45However, there is no absolute certainty of reaching the
- 1:49objective based on these manifested powers.
- 1:54It must also be noted that some of these individuals have
- 1:57exercised A discipline and a spiritual focus over a number of
- 2:01lifetimes so that they may indeed be advanced by virtue of
- 2:07the focus and dedication they have exhibited in their
- 2:10spiritual endeavours. This raises up the need for the
- 2:15power of sincerity. Sincerity is an indication of
- 2:19the long term and focused efforts that avoid being
- 2:24dissipated or distracted. The power of sincerity overcomes
- 2:28many limitations that individual strength alone in a particular
- 2:33individual or situation cannot resolve.
- 2:38Reliance of self accomplishment also can tend to create a sense
- 2:44of superiority and egoistic vanity in the person who relies
- 2:47on strength alone and does not credit other powers as having
- 2:52their due. Thus there is an ego trap that
- 2:56can set back the spiritual progress with particular
- 3:00relation to those who believe one way or the other in the
- 3:05self-made illusion of accomplishment.
- 3:08What this viewpoint tends to overlook is the reality that
- 3:13each and every individual is part of the vast process of
- 3:16manifestation of nature, and it is not an individual's power,
- 3:21but the power of the Divine manifestation that creates the
- 3:24strength, the opportunity and the result.
- 3:29Thus we come to the power behind all success, which may we may
- 3:34call the Divine Will or Divine Grace.
- 3:39In His book the Mother Sriorbindo states quote, in all
- 3:45that is done in the universe, the Divine through His Shakti is
- 3:49behind all action, but He is veiled by His yoga Maya and
- 3:54works through the ego of the Jiva in the lower nature.
- 3:59In Yoga also it is the Divine who is the Sadak and the
- 4:04Sadhana. It is His Shakti with Her light,
- 4:08power, knowledge, consciousness, Ananda, acting upon the Adhara
- 4:15and when it is open to Her, pouring into it with these
- 4:19divine forces, that makes the sadhana possible.
- 4:24End Quote. Thus we see that when we see
- 4:28strength, we are actually observing the working of the
- 4:32Divine grace through the individual Nexus of the ego
- 4:36personality. Sri Orobindo writes quote.
- 4:42There is nothing unintelligible in what I say about strength and
- 4:45grace. Strength has a value for
- 4:48spiritual realization, but to say that it can be done by
- 4:52strength only and by no other means is a violent exaggeration.
- 4:58Grace is not an invention, it is a fact of spiritual experience.
- 5:04Many who would be considered as mere nothings by the wise and
- 5:07strong, have attained by grace. Illiterate, without mental power
- 5:13or training, without strength of character or will, they have yet
- 5:18aspired and suddenly or rapidly grown into spiritual realization
- 5:24because they had faith or because they were sincere.
- 5:30These facts are facts of spiritual history and of quite
- 5:35ordinary spiritual experience. Strength, if it is spiritual, is
- 5:42a power for spiritual realization.
- 5:45A greater power is sincerity. The greatest power of all is
- 5:51grace. I have said many times without
- 5:54number, that if a man is sincere he will go through in spite of
- 5:57long delay and overwhelming difficulties.
- 6:01I have repeatedly spoken of the divine grace.
- 6:05I have referred any number of times to the line in the Gita.
- 6:09I will deliver thee from all sin and evil.
- 6:12Do not grieve. End Quote.
