- 0:00Hello and welcome back to Inside Quotes Book Club, where my brother and I read some books.
- 0:04But more specifically, we read books that turn into movies.
- 0:08We are currently covering the first Harry Potter book, one chapter a week, with intentions of prepping for the new HBO show coming this Christmas.
- 0:15I'm your host Jeremy and with me today is my brother Jonathan.
- 0:18Jonathan, what you been reading lately?
- 0:20I've been reading ~ Going Solo by Rold Dahl.
- 0:24one.
- 0:26That's amazing.
- 0:27This is Rolt Dahl's autobiography of his years as a pilot in World War Two.
- 0:33Interesting.
- 0:34it's kind of like a I'm not actively reading it, but like there's been some nights where like I drank I drank too much caffeine and then I couldn't sleep.
- 0:43So then I like I just kinda read a chapter or two of my book until I fall asleep.
- 0:47So that's
- 0:49helping you sleep.
- 0:50But also I've been reading ~ Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone by J.
- 0:54K.
- 0:54Rowling.
- 0:55That's awesome.
- 0:56Okay.
- 0:57Me too.
- 0:58recently finished chapter four, actually.
- 1:00~
- 1:01We should talk about chapter four this week.
- 1:04This is the first time in my life that I'm actually reading multiple books, so I think that's okay.
- 1:11I've always been a one at a time guy, but I'm just like I'm probably four or five books deep right now.
- 1:17You can't stop me.
- 1:18Yeah.
- 1:20I can do that if it's like different enough stuff, you know, like I don't know.
- 1:25Yeah, yeah.
- 1:26It would be hard for me to do like four different fiction type books, you know, at the
- 1:31same time to just to keep track of it, but I don't know.
- 1:36Anyways.
- 1:37Harry Potter's
- 1:37always on the on the docket.
- 1:40It's pretty easy.
- 1:40Yeah.
- 1:43And then John Green just came out with a new book, Hollywood Ending, that I haven't started yet, but I think it's gonna be my sixth book in my lineup.
- 1:51So
- 1:51I thought you were about to say I think it's gonna be my sixth favorite John Green book, which would be an insult, right?
- 1:57It's probably my fourth at least.
- 1:59Cause there he
- 2:00has a couple that aren't my favorite.
- 2:02But yeah.
- 2:03I'm excited for it.
- 2:04I've heard really good things about it, so.
- 2:06This isn't a book club for other books though.
- 2:08It's about Harry Potter and the Sorcerer Stone.
- 2:11actually, sorry.
- 2:12I have also been listening to the Narnia audio dramas from Focus on a Family.
- 2:19And ~ those are incredible.
- 2:23I am on I I'm
- 2:25telling you, I've listened to four I'm on five I'm on Voyage of the Dawn Treader, so I've I've done Magician's Nephew all
- 2:34the way.
- 2:35I've listened to almost five of their books in a week and a half.
- 2:40They're they're short books.
- 2:41Yeah.
- 2:42~ but they are incredible.
- 2:45~ it's on YouTube, so you should definitely do that.
- 2:48And also, in other Narnia news, the magician's nephew trailer dropped today.
- 2:53You excited about that?
- 2:55Huh?
- 2:56d I didn't watch the trailer yet.
- 2:57Yeah.
- 3:00Well, you should watch the trailer.
- 3:01It's actually pretty good.
- 3:02So it makes me very excited.
- 3:04There's been a lot of controversy with that, but
- 3:06I I've got some reservations about it, but I don't know.
- 3:10think
- 3:10there's some things that the the trailer makes me feel hopeful.
- 3:13So
- 3:15~ yeah, maybe if listeners, if you want us to cover the magician's nephew next, hit us up, let us know.
- 3:22We might want to do that.
- 3:23It's a quick book.
- 3:25Jeremy, do you want to meet the keeper of the keys?
- 3:27Yes, the Keeper of the Keys is this week's episode, this chapter.
- 3:32and it's an exciting time because
- 3:35the last chapter it ended on a cliffhanger.
- 3:38who is at the door?
- 3:38Who's knocking on this door?
- 3:40~ it turns out it's a half giant named Hagrid that everyone loves, except for a couple ~ mean people in the series, but we'll figure that out later.
- 3:50Ready for a chapter summary?
- 3:52let's get a chapter summary for chapter four, The Keeper of the Keys.
- 3:56Hagrid arrives and reveals to Harry that he is a wizard.
- 4:00His parents were magical and they were murdered by Lord Voldemort.
- 4:04We're just getting a lot of plot in this chapter.
- 4:07Pretty sure it's Voldemort.
- 4:09Voldemort.
- 4:11Harry learns that Voldemort also tried to kill him as a baby, but mysteriously failed, leaving him with his lightning-shaped scar.
- 4:19With the truth finally revealed, Harry begins his journey into the wizarding world.
- 4:24And
- 4:25Hilarity r ensues.
- 4:27Hilarity does in fact ensue.
- 4:30This is also a funny one, because it's like actually.
- 4:33I don't know how funny it is, but it is actually kind of scary.
- 4:37For the Dursleys.
- 4:38Because it's Hagrid is coming to save the day.
- 4:42Save him from the Durslies.
- 4:45And the Dursleys can't do anything about it, no matter how hard they try.
- 4:49They're s they're
- 4:50nephew is going to get kidnapped by the a very large man, so sorry.
- 4:55They don't care.
- 4:58if they knew it was gonna take away, they'd probably be okay.
- 5:01Yeah, I also don't understand why they're so hesitant.
- 5:04They're like, We don't like this kid, just take him off our hands.
- 5:09You know?
- 5:09like the the only reason is that they ~ they say later on in the chapter is, ~ you know, we we swore when we took in we'd stamp out this nonsense.
- 5:19So they're just like opposed to that to to wizards
- 5:23in in general, so they just
- 5:25don't want him to learn anything.
- 5:26They'd rather just keep him in the dark his whole life.
- 5:29Which is hard to do.
- 5:30I feel like once a kid gets old enough they need to know everything,
- 5:36There's so many tropes where ~ okay, sorry.
- 5:40I have to admit, we watched Practical Magic Two in the theaters the other day.
- 5:46When Jeremy says we, I had no part in this.
- 5:50And guess
- 5:50who hasn't seen Practical Magic One?
- 5:53This guy.
- 5:55But Avi is a fan of those and you know what?
- 5:58It is horrible.
- 6:00You
- 6:00know, I was pleasantly disappointed.
- 6:04I was.
- 6:05That's the only thing
- 6:06I was like, you know what?
- 6:07We should go see that 'cause it's on my fantasy box office.
- 6:12I hope the first one's good.
- 6:13This one was pretty rough because there's a lot of Botox.
- 6:16Legacy sequ yeah, okay.
- 6:18the Lega
- 6:18and it's hard to read their emotions, but the whole story is about Sandra Bullock keeping the secret from her daughter that they are witches and wizards.
- 6:29So it's kinda relevant.
- 6:31And it doesn't let's just say it doesn't end well keeping that secret.
- 6:36~ you gotta tell your kids stuff when they can handle it.
- 6:39That's basically what I learned.
- 6:40So
- 6:41Is this the plot to Shrek Five?
- 6:43~ I hope not.
- 6:44Don't bring that up right now.
- 6:45I'm in a good mood.
- 6:46Okay, sorry, sorry.
- 6:48Hey, let's
- 6:48talk about this ~ chapter artwork, shall we?
- 6:53Shepter Atweck.
- 6:55Iconic.
- 6:55I love this one.
- 6:56This is our first view of Hagrid and his shoes the size of bottlenose dolphins.
- 7:03Yeah.
- 7:05His face completely hidden by a long shaggy mane of hair and a wild tangled beard, and you could make out
- 7:10his eyes glinting like black beetles under all the hair.
- 7:14vivid imagery.
- 7:15It it's weird, he kinda i f j even from the the sound of them, he sounds like warm and friendly.
- 7:26I know.
- 7:27No, I I've heard ~ even based on his name, Rubius.
- 7:31It's kinda like Ruby Red, kinda just like that.
- 7:34It kind
- 7:34of I've heard people talk about his that having something to do with his character, how he's kinda hotheaded a little bit sometimes and like
- 7:41~ but he's a very like warm character.
- 7:44Does it say he's he has brown hair?
- 7:47Or is he a redhead?
- 7:49~ it doesn't say here.
- 7:52I'm going into this as did JK Rowling use inspiration?
- 7:57Does she take inspiration from Muppet's Christmas Carol?
- 8:00The Ghost of Christmas present?
- 8:03Cause that is Hagrid.
- 8:05That is Hagrid.
- 8:08It could be.
- 8:10He does look like that puppet here.
- 8:12He does.
- 8:14No, this
- 8:14is an iconic iconic piece of artwork.
- 8:18I love this one so much.
- 8:19It shows him like breaking down the door.
- 8:21I'm here now.
- 8:23There's a huge dude.
- 8:25~ do you want to rank this?
- 8:27yeah,
- 8:27we should add this to our tier list.
- 8:29Alright.
- 8:30So the last time we ranked all of these, ~ and then now we're here for Is this A tier or is it S tier?
- 8:38Or is it F tier?
- 8:40What do you think?
- 8:41Well, I like this art.
- 8:43I might not be as high on it as you are.
- 8:45Okay.
- 8:46I feel like it's cool.
- 8:47I I feel like the way that it's ~ distorted, it's probably from Harry's perspective.
- 8:53So the feet are huge, but his face is so far away.
- 8:57And
- 8:58I think it's cool, but I I think I'd rather see more detail.
- 9:00I don't know.
- 9:01Okay.
- 9:02At least the door underneath his feet,
- 9:05Mm-hmm.
- 9:06But it's so epic.
- 9:08he's got his scarf in in the wind, he's got his owl.
- 9:14Yeah.
- 9:16It's pretty cool.
- 9:17The force the difference perspective is pretty cool too.
- 9:20What are your what are you thinking?
- 9:22I I'm kinda more in the B range for this.
- 9:26Yeah,
- 9:26you think this is an A?
- 9:28If you were gonna say S, I would have let you.
- 9:31Okay, let's split the difference and go A then.
- 9:33Okay, thank you.
- 9:34Now we have one in each category except for F.
- 9:37We can change it later, but we can compare.
- 9:40It's definitely better than the letters.
- 9:43No, it's cool.
- 9:43It's cool.
- 9:44Yeah.
- 9:45Mm-hmm.
- 9:47so yeah.
- 9:48We will save the rest for next week as we keep going.
- 9:52A tier it is.
- 9:53I'm happy with that.
- 9:53That's fine.
- 9:54The Keeper of the Keys Okay, so shall we just dive into this chapter?
- 10:02Yeah, let's get let's get into it.
- 10:04There's a giant at the door.
- 10:06Hagrid arrives and introduces himself to Harry and confronts the Dursleys.
- 10:11That's basically what goes on in this little section.
- 10:13And the first note that I wrote was just a little standout quote already.
- 10:19Budge up, you great lump.
- 10:22okay.
- 10:23There's also ~ shut up, Dirzy Dursley, you great prune.
- 10:28I highlighted that one.
- 10:29That's a good one too, but
- 10:30in the movie I feel like Robbie Coltrane improved and said, Dry up, Dursley, you great prune because prunes are dried.
- 10:38So
- 10:39W we'll have to take that one to the subtitles on our next watch.
- 10:43I don't know.
- 10:43that isn't that dry up, Dirse, you great prune?
- 10:46Am I wrong?
- 10:47I don't honestly know.
- 10:49I'm pretty sure it's dry up.
- 10:50'Cause he doesn't say shut up.
- 10:54It's dry up, Dozley, you great prune.
- 10:58Anyways.
- 10:59Yeah.
- 10:59~ and then this giant is just standing in this one room, two room cabin, and Harry is like, How does this guy know me?
- 11:10And he just shows up with a chocolate cake.
- 11:13Which is interesting 'cause it's chocolate cake, not strawberry with green letters.
- 11:18It's chocolate with green letters.
- 11:23that says Happy Birthday, Harry.
- 11:25My only guess is why it was pink in the movie is because green and pink is a good contrast color.
- 11:31So maybe it's a strawberry cake in the movie world.
- 11:35But
- 11:37yeah.
- 11:37It'd be interesting to see how far they go in the ~ details, like are they gonna make that a chocolate cake in the HBO?
- 11:45It's kinda setting him up to do that.
- 11:47I would respect that.
- 11:49Prediction
- 11:51and then he Hagar just sits down on the couch.
- 11:55He's the big man in the room.
- 11:56He just makes himself at home.
- 11:58Pulls out a pack of sausages to roast over the fire.
- 12:02And for once
- 12:03it's there's a w interesting feeling 'cause ~ Harry notes that he feels immediately warm as soon as he turns the fire on.
- 12:11It was like almost refreshing for him.
- 12:15~
- 12:16Which is great 'cause he's in a cold cabin, but also there's more to it than just that kind of warmth.
- 12:24I I like that as the chapter progresses it talks about him like sitting on the sofa and like as
- 12:31it's progresses like the sofa just like keeps sinking like under his weight throughout the whole time.
- 12:37It says like by the time he sits in it like the last time, the sofa's like the legs have are are broken.
- 12:42It's completely like on the floor, basically, like the cushions have broke through, like
- 12:47it's not built for half giants.
- 12:49him.
- 12:50~ yeah, but the sausages, which Harry he offered Harry he offered Harry to eat some sausages.
- 12:57And, you know, if you've eaten stale cornflakes, cold tin tomatoes and a bag of crisps, a fresh warm brat or smoked sausage has to hit so hard.
- 13:06Mm-hmm.
- 13:07Not to mention you have chocolate cake for afterwards, but
- 13:11feel like this also just ~ sets a precedent of just ~ maybe I'm making this up, but just Hagrid carrying so much stuff in his cl ~ pockets, ~
- 13:22~ like it says the giant sat back down, taking all sorts of things out of his pockets.
- 13:28A copper kettle, a squashy package of sausages, a poker, a teapot, several several chipped mugs
- 13:38And a bottle of some amber liquid that he took a swig from before starting to make tea.
- 13:42~ just imagine carrying that all all on you ~
- 13:46Got that huge trench coat.
- 13:47you know.
- 13:48He might I wonder if it's nah, he seems like the guy that would just do that manually.
- 13:53Like, you know, they have those concealment charms.
- 13:55~ where
- 13:57you can expand.
- 13:58I don't know if it's a concealment charm.
- 14:00I might be wrong.
- 14:01But, you know, you can have a bag full of random stuff like Mary Poppins.
- 14:07I wonder if he has got a magic trench coat.
- 14:10All adds to the mystery of this guy.
- 14:11You never know what he's gonna pull out.
- 14:14Right to the last sentence of the chapter too.
- 14:17'Cause he has mice in there.
- 14:19Yeah.
- 14:21Yeah.
- 14:22But anyways, ~ he accuses Harry of not knowing anything, and Harry takes offense.
- 14:29He's like, Well, I feel like I know like maths and stuff like that.
- 14:35Which is another Britishism
- 14:36'cause because the American version says math.
- 14:40But the audiobook says maths.
- 14:43I just feel like Americans are are right on that one.
- 14:47So Mathematics Maths.
- 14:51I don't know.
- 14:51We'll see.
- 14:52They both sound plural.
- 14:54Hm.
- 14:55That's pretty much what I've got for that first section.
- 14:58Okay.
- 14:59I I did have a a couple of things here.
- 15:01~ well just like whenever he gives when Hagrid gives Harry the birthday cake, you know, and he it says that Harry meant to say thank you, but the words got lost on the way to his
- 15:12mouth and all he could say was, Who are you?
- 15:15Like, wait a minute.
- 15:18Who are you?
- 15:21you?
- 15:22~ and he's he
- 15:24just laughs.
- 15:24He's like, True, I haven't introduced myself.
- 15:26Rubius Hagrid, keeper of keys and grounds at Hogwarts.
- 15:31Course you know all about Hogwarts.
- 15:34sorry, no.
- 15:35Hm.
- 15:36And then yeah, he's he's like, didn't you ever wonder where your parents learned it all?
- 15:40I mean it's
- 15:41it's a classic like scene in the movie.
- 15:44It really is.
- 15:45there's so much dialogue here.
- 15:48But yeah, yeah, I mean he d he has no idea about his parents, how they truly died.
- 15:53we'll get to that in a minute.
- 15:55And he has no idea about hogwarts or wizards or witches or any magic in general.
- 16:01Yeah.
- 16:02~
- 16:03until now.
- 16:04Page forty nine.
- 16:06~ one other thing I was gonna bring up here.
- 16:09Okay.
- 16:11~ it says Hagrid is the keeper of keys and grounds at Hogwarts.
- 16:15So what does that entail?
- 16:17Okay.
- 16:18So he is the landscaping guy.
- 16:24And he has the key to all
- 16:26the maybe the Quidditch Stadium.
- 16:29~ some of the gates around the area.
- 16:33But I w I just wonder what all these keys go to.
- 16:35Because I feel like Filch needs a good set of keys.
- 16:40He's kinda like the janitor.
- 16:43Yeah, does Filch report to Hagrid?
- 16:44Who is Filch's boss?
- 16:46Probably probably
- 16:48Dumbledore, but
- 16:50Yeah, 'cause
- 16:50their work together in the Forbidden Forest scene later on in this book.
- 16:54Spoiler.
- 16:55Detention.
- 16:56~
- 16:57I i is Hagrid Filch's boss?
- 17:01What a fun what a fun theory.
- 17:04No, Mrs.
- 17:05Norris is.
- 17:07People
- 17:08will get that joke in a few chapters.
- 17:10Mm-hmm.
- 17:12Yeah, I I did just a quick Google search and just like it just basically said Haggard maintains the school grounds, manages the keys to Hogwarts doors, patrols the perimeter of
- 17:23the Forbidden Forest, tends the
- 17:25school garden in pumpkin patch, and performs special tasks for the headmaster, Albus Dumbledore.
- 17:31He also traditionally escorts first year students across the lake in boats.
- 17:36So we'll get to that that too, but I don't know.
- 17:40Mhm.
- 17:41But shall we shall we move on to the next section?
- 17:43like a good job to me.
- 17:45he's got a free place to live.
- 17:48Not bad for like a third third
- 17:52year ~ dropout, kind
- 17:55of.
- 17:55Not really a dropout, but yeah.
- 18:00Mm-hmm.
- 18:01But yeah.
- 18:01~ I noticed that when he finally tells him that he's a wizard, it's different than the movie.
- 18:08He says everyone knows it as You're a Wizard, Harry.
- 18:13But it says, Harry, you're a wizard.
- 18:15Mm-hmm.
- 18:17Yeah, which way do you prefer?
- 18:20You're a wizard Harry.
- 18:21I feel like obviously.
- 18:23The movie did that one better.
- 18:25So
- 18:26You think that was Robbie Coltrane just kinda switching some stuff up in the script?
- 18:31I think so.
- 18:32If he if he's really the mastermind behind Dry Up Dursley, you great prune, I feel like he has the capacity to change things to make it sound better.
- 18:42I don't know.
- 18:44I I I agree.
- 18:45i it just is because that's what I'm used to with the movie, but I just felt like that delivery was so good.
- 18:51It's kinda like the Mandela effect with ~ Luke, I'm your father.
- 18:56No, I'm your father.
- 18:58People get the quote wrong all the time.
- 19:00We get quotes wrong all the time.
- 19:02All the time.
- 19:03So yeah, the ne the next section is Hagrid, you know, telling Harry about ~ the wizarding world and that he is he is in fact a wizard.
- 19:13And he's in denial about it.
- 19:14He's like, I'm not sure I can I'm
- 19:16not sh you might be mistaken.
- 19:18I'm the kid that gets abused by his and uncle.
- 19:21Mm-hmm.
- 19:22Yeah.
- 19:23And and you finally see ~ you know, like Petunia talk about Invern and like finally admit to like what they've been hiding kind of thing.
- 19:32And
- 19:32~ you finally it she she finally reacts to talking about her sister in front of Harry for like pretty much the first time.
- 19:40Yeah.
- 19:42so Hagar tells Harry that he's a wizard and he gives him ~ the letter.
- 19:50So he can finally read this letter for the first
- 19:53time.
- 19:53~ so this time it's addressed to Mr.
- 19:56H.
- 19:56Potter, the floor, hut on the rock, the sea.
- 20:02awesome.
- 20:02Just generic the C.
- 20:04yeah.
- 20:05And it says Hogwarts School
- 20:07of Witchcraft and Wizardry.
- 20:09Just a side note, one of the things I've always loved about these books is just the different like the the way like letters are written, the different fonts and stuff, ~ like
- 20:19the signatures and Yeah.
- 20:22Mm-hmm.
- 20:24I've always just liked that, like different styles of writings.
- 20:27do that.
- 20:29But Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, Headmaster, Albus Dumbledore, Order of Merlin, First Class, Grand Sorcerer, Chief Warlock, Supreme Mugwump, International
- 20:43Confederation
- 20:43of Wizards.
- 20:45he's a Confederate.
- 20:46I did not know that.
- 20:47Yikes.
- 20:48Yeah.
- 20:49I don't know what a mugwump is.
- 20:52I did pull up something.
- 20:54I
- 20:54I did pull up this Order of Merlin is like a designation that gets pulled up or mentioned
- 21:01quite a bit like throughout the series.
- 21:03~
- 21:04there is like a like a Pottermore article about it, ~ that I found online.
- 21:10I was I had that pulled up if you wanna if you wanna know about the the Order of Merlin, Jeremy.
- 21:16I don't know, you were about to pull something up in your book.
- 21:18up Mugwump right now and right now it doesn't even seem like it's a real word.
- 21:22It's a real thing.
- 21:23It's called ~ Mugwump is a term with several historical, political and cultural meanings originating from the Native American Algonquian language, meaning war leader or important
- 21:35person.
- 21:37So I wonder
- 21:38if was like a war leader from the first war.
- 21:42So
- 21:43Supreme Mugwump.
- 21:45the Order of Merlin is awarded by the Wizengamah, an organization that predates the Ministry of Magic, and nowadays functions as a combination of court and parliament.
- 21:55The Order comprises a handsome golden medal of a green ribbon, first class, purple ribbon, second class, or white ribbon, third class.
- 22:05The Order of Merlin, commemorating the most famous wizard of his time, has been
- 22:09given since the fifteenth century.
- 22:10Legends say that the green ribbon on which the first class order hangs is to reflect Merlin Merlin's Hogwarts house.
- 22:17So does that mean Merlin was a Slytherin?
- 22:20A green ribbon?
- 22:22that's possible.
- 22:24Not everybody's evil in Slytherin, though.
- 22:27That's what we
- 22:27get to learn.
- 22:29So there's different tiers, ~ first, second, and third class.
- 22:33A first class order is awarded for acts of outstanding bravery or distinction in magic.
- 22:40Second
- 22:40class is awarded for achievement or an endeavor beyond the ordinary.
- 22:45A third class is given to those who have made a contribution to our store of knowledge or entertainment.
- 22:52So ~ inside quotes is pretty good entertainment.
- 22:55I'd say we at least get a third class Order of Merlin.
- 22:58Yeah, yeah.
- 22:59time I hear that, ~ as a title, I think third class, I think of the Pink Panther movie where Steve Martin is like Officer Jacques Cluseau, Gandarme, third class.
- 23:11I don't know what he says, the middle.
- 23:13And but he like
- 23:14flings his badge and it sticks into his chest.
- 23:16~ Sid class.
- 23:21a good pull.
- 23:23So yeah, Dumbledore has has done something, ~ an outstanding act of bravery, ~ or distinction in magic.
- 23:31I'm pretty sure that's for defeating Grindaval, but
- 23:34Probably.
- 23:35we don't know about all that just yet.
- 23:38Anyways, he's
- 23:41he's got a lot of, you know
- 23:44Certifications and designations by his name.
- 23:46He's he he's a powerful dude.
- 23:50And middle names.
- 23:50Yeah,
- 23:51we'll find that out too.
- 23:53Here's what the letter says, though.
- 23:54Dear Mr.
- 23:55Potter, we are pleased to inform you that you have been accepted to Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry.
- 24:00Please find enclosed a list of necessary books and equipment.
- 24:04Term begins September 1st.
- 24:06We await your owl by no later than July 31st.
- 24:10Your sincer sincerely, Minerva McGonagall.
- 24:13Deputy Headmistress.
- 24:15I'm about what?
- 24:16I'm just Harry.
- 24:17Just Harry.
- 24:19And so after this, Harry's like he he's thinking, there's a million questions running through his head and it says after a few minutes he stammered, What does it mean they wait
- 24:27a ~ they await my owl?
- 24:30And Hagrid says, G
- 24:31gallopin, Gorgons, that reminds me And that's when he like scribbles out a letter to like
- 24:37to Albus Dumbledore and says, Dear Professor Dumbledore, giving Harry his letter, taking
- 24:41him to buy his things tomorrow.
- 24:43Weather's horrible.
- 24:44Hope you're well, Hagrid.
- 24:46I love that he needed a closer.
- 24:48~ weather's horrible.
- 24:49Hope you're well.
- 24:51Hagrid.
- 24:52And then
- 24:52this might be my favorite part of the whole chapter.
- 24:55It says then Hagrid rolled up the note, gave it to the owl, which clamped it in its beak,
- 24:59went to the door, threw the owl out into the storm, then came back and sat down as though this was normal.
- 25:06This needs to be unhinged.
- 25:09Visually unhinged.
- 25:10She just like doesn't pay attention, just goes pa
- 25:13And it needs to be really funny.
- 25:15HBO, listen to us, even though
- 25:16you already filmed and edited, redo it.
- 25:20This is great.
- 25:21No, that that cracked me up.
- 25:23That was really fun.
- 25:24~
- 25:25Yeah, and then so Uncle Vernon chimes in and is like, he's not going and Haggard's just like, I'd like to see a great muggle
- 25:33like you try and stop him, you know.
- 25:35So Haggard then has to explain what a muggle is.
- 25:38It's what we call non magic folk to people like them.
- 25:43~ said, and it's your bad luck, you're you grew up in a family of the biggest muggles I ever laid eyes on.
- 25:49Is he mean biggest they really aren't wizard people or biggest in s ty in size?
- 25:54'Cause if it's biggest in size, that's really funny coming from a half giant.
- 26:01Yeah.
- 26:02~ I think just how big of like how just non magical.
- 26:08Yeah.
- 26:09Yeah.
- 26:12I don't know, maybe he was talking about Dudley, 'cause he does try and turn him into a pig at one point.
- 26:16He always be catching strays.
- 26:19Okay.
- 26:21So, Har Hagrid has given Harry his letter.
- 26:24He's finally knows w what the what the letter's all about.
- 26:28He's trying to make sense of it.
- 26:30~ and basically Vernon starts talking about how yeah, he he swore he they'd stamp it out of him, you know, that he wouldn't go to this school.
- 26:41And Harry's just like, You knew?
- 26:43You knew that I was a wizard?
- 26:45And this is where Petunia chimes in for the first time and is just like, Of course we knew
- 26:50how could we not know?
- 26:52And how much she Yeah,
- 26:54it's it's like she it just starts pouring out of her like she had been like wanting to say it for years.
- 27:01And just talking about
- 27:02her sister.
- 27:02~ It's like, she got her letter and disappeared off to that school and came home every vacation with her pockets full of frog spawn, turning teacups into rats.
- 27:12I was the only one who saw her for what she was.
- 27:15A freak.
- 27:16Not I don't think anything will ~ I think that was an incredible monologue from ~
- 27:24Fiona Shaw.
- 27:26I think that was iconic.
- 27:27I feel like she peaked in the series right there.
- 27:31~
- 27:32I think this scene in general in the movie I I don't really know how much more they can improve on it.
- 27:38Like I feel like the
- 27:39movie version is is pretty good.
- 27:42I don't really know what they could do.
- 27:44Yeah.
- 27:46like to see him the he spends the night there.
- 27:50Hagrid falls asleep on the couch.
- 27:53yeah.
- 27:53Yeah.
- 27:54Mm-hmm.
- 27:54And they leave in the morning, so maybe that's something they could do, but And then he explains
- 27:59everything there and not at the leaky cauldron.
- 28:04So
- 28:05~ You're right, that is a change.
- 28:07Yeah.
- 28:08I didn't think about that.
- 28:09But it's
- 28:11But what they've done is great already.
- 28:14So like it's fine.
- 28:17So at this point, ~ Petunia says then she met that potter at school they left and got married, and had you, and of course I knew you'd be just the same, just as strange, just
- 28:26as abnormal.
- 28:29And then if you please, she went and got herself blown up and we got landed with you.
- 28:33Blown up.
- 28:34You told me they died in a car crash.
- 28:37A car crash?
- 28:38A car crash could Lily and James Potter It's an outrage.
- 28:43A scandal.
- 28:44No, that's pretty much what he says.
- 28:46Yeah, we're quoting the book now.
- 28:48Yeah.
- 28:48~
- 28:49good.
- 28:50I feel like that that scene is way more quotable than that viral chess scene that ~ from Ron Not me, not Humani, you This
- 29:01was that's a way better scene to to to quote, I think.
- 29:06There's so much there's
- 29:07so much there too of just yeah, just backstory and lore that is dropped here.
- 29:14it's such an essential chapter.
- 29:16And an iconic moment in the movie.
- 29:17in the family.
- 29:19Isn't it wonderful?
- 29:21Betunia's villain monologue.
- 29:23It's so so incredible.
- 29:26They I I I don't have hope for the HBO because it was too good there.
- 29:30But we'll see.
- 29:31We'll see what they do with that.
- 29:33I kind of feel bad for her too, because she was clearly overlooked as a kid.
- 29:37But she turned sour instead of sweet.
- 29:40at this point I'm kinda feeling bad for Hagrid because he thought he was just delivering a letter and now he's got to ~ deliver some bad
- 29:48news.
- 29:50Hagrid's like, I I never expected this, he said in a low worried voice.
- 29:55I had no idea when Dumbledore told me there might be trouble getting a hold of ya, how much you didn't know.
- 30:00It's like I'm not sure if I'm the right person to tell ya, but someone's gotta.
- 30:04You can't go off to Hogwarts not knowing.
- 30:07Yeah.
- 30:08So
- 30:09He he tries to go into the story of what happened the night his parents died.
- 30:13Do you have any thoughts, Jeremy?
- 30:15I I
- 30:15do, I do.
- 30:16~ so it's interesting even when like since Harry doesn't know what happened that night.
- 30:24~ but it's interesting even though at this point Hagrid doesn't know what happened that night.
- 30:30~ he is basically giving the POV of the entire public knowledge of this this story.
- 30:37Like, not everybody knows what it is.
- 30:39I don't think even Dumbledore knows.
- 30:41I think we figured this all out later with the prophecy stuff in the later in the later books.
- 30:46But people were just like he I guess he was just intimidated by Lily and James being like on Dumbledore's side, so he went to go kill him and I think he wanted to kill you because
- 30:57you know, to make it a clean job.
- 30:59Yeah.
- 31:00And it's just interesting that that's just the perspective and there's a whole lot more to dive into later on in the in the books.
- 31:08So so yeah.
- 31:12~ yeah, I I agree.
- 31:14He is he is just relaying what the general wizarding population knows about that night.
- 31:20~ couple quotes that I highlighted.
- 31:23One he said before, I j I just like funny phrases, so he said gallopin gorgons earlier.
- 31:29And then
- 31:29this time he's saying gulpin gargoyles, Harry.
- 31:32You know.
- 31:34And then when he's
- 31:35trying to tell him about Voldemort.
- 31:37He's like he he doesn't want to say it.
- 31:39He's like you know who and he's like he's like can you say the name?
- 31:42Could you write it down?
- 31:43It's just like a classic quote.
- 31:44Nah, can't spell it.
- 31:48All right.
- 31:49Voldemort.
- 31:50and then he tells about ~ the people that he killed before and he listed them off and there's some interesting names here.
- 31:57There's the McKinnons, the
- 31:59Pruits, and the Bones.
- 32:01Yeah.
- 32:02Mm-hmm.
- 32:03~ and we know Susan Bones is a ~ student at at ~ Hogwarts while Harry i in the same year as Harry.
- 32:11~ so that made me question like is Susan Bones also an orphan?
- 32:15Like you'd think that they would bond over that.
- 32:19O over ~ yeah, Voldemort killed my parents too, But it doesn't say anything about the parents.
- 32:23I looked it up and he it was like her grandfather and her aunt uncle.
- 32:29Th
- 32:31but that's still enough to bond over.
- 32:34~ I feel like they could have been better friends at Hogwarts.
- 32:38Yeah.
- 32:39~ I guess if you look at it that way with like distant or just other relatives, probably a lot of people
- 32:46were like, I did have like a relative that was killed during that wizarding war and stuff like that.
- 32:52Yeah.
- 32:53But also she was in like she ends up getting sorted to another house, right?
- 32:58So th they don't
- 33:00they don't interact.
- 33:01That's weird 'cause there's f ten people in their class.
- 33:05So so really you're saying Susan Bones is an N P C is what you're saying.
- 33:09I wish not.
- 33:11And I actually think
- 33:12I think HBO is doing a good job of involving the other people.
- 33:17The other students and like the NPCs of the movies.
- 33:20of the trailer, ~ you get to see a lot of the different yeah,
- 33:24side characters, other students.
- 33:26Yeah.
- 33:28I agree.
- 33:28good.
- 33:28We'll probably get some Susan bones in there.
- 33:31So maybe they'll have something.
- 33:33~ but there's the
- 33:35series will cast their daughter as Susan Bones or something.
- 33:38is an interesting thing.
- 33:39That's Chris Columbus's daughter, right?
- 33:42I thought that was Hannah Abbott.
- 33:43I might have been wrong.
- 33:44Maybe it is, yeah.
- 33:45No, Susan Bones, that was right.
- 33:47Susan Bones.
- 33:49I knew you're going to.
- 33:51Got to, you got to.
- 33:53~ and then the McKinnons were th I didn't really find much on them.
- 33:57~ but the Pruits.
- 34:00Pruits are interesting because that is Molly Weasley's maiden name.
- 34:05And the Pruits that were killed were her two brothers, ~ Fabian and Gideon.
- 34:13Which is interesting because that's an F and G and so she named Fred and George after her brothers that died in the first Wizarding War by Voldemort.
- 34:24No, that's that's true Pottermore.
- 34:26Yeah.
- 34:26That's that's legit canon.
- 34:28So that's interesting
- 34:30little f tidbit there.
- 34:32And the McKinnons, you said you didn't find anything there?
- 34:35Okay.
- 34:36Yeah.
- 34:37still N PCs in my head right now.
- 34:40Maybe there's some McKinnon's in Hogwarts Legacy or something like that down the line.
- 34:44I know of is Nathan McKinnon, the I NHL player.
- 34:51And he's
- 34:52very Canadian.
- 34:53So
- 34:54yes, I his name hasn't been on the list since he was born.
- 34:57it says at this point something very painful was going on in Harry's mind.
- 35:01As Hagrid's story came to a close, he saw a blinding flash of green light more clearly than he had remembered it before, and then he remembered something else for the first time
- 35:09in his life, a high, cold, cruel laugh.
- 35:12So this is kinda the start of ~ yeah, just like being able to kind of start to he
- 35:18pick up some pieces of that that memory of that night and
- 35:22getting these ki like kinda haunted by these like nightmares or these kind of flashes green light and hearing sounds of Holdemort.
- 35:31He didn't know about it until until this moment though, you know.
- 35:35Right.
- 35:36And I think that pain in his head maybe it's referring to his scar burning?
- 35:41I don't know.
- 35:42Hmm.
- 35:44Yeah, it doesn't say specifically, but
- 35:47I do want to make note of the full cast audio edition.
- 35:50When they talk about that high pitched squeal, that's Voldemort.
- 35:54That's not his mom.
- 35:55That's that's Voldemort laughing maniacally.
- 35:58But like it's very
- 35:59creepy, but not how we know Voldemort.
- 36:02Like Voldemort is like deep voice, very s straight faced, like but this is like squeaky almost.
- 36:12~ Wicked Witch of the West.
- 36:14But that was just one person's take.
- 36:15So
- 36:17Another quote I highlighted from Uncle Vernon, just another funny phrase.
- 36:21Load of old Tosh.
- 36:23Lord of old Tosh.
- 36:26Okay.
- 36:27Good sling.
- 36:28But I think that brings us into the the last section here.
- 36:32Okay.
- 36:33we've got a new direction.
- 36:34We've got Hagrid standing up to Vernon.
- 36:37He reveals a little bit about his own past.
- 36:40And then he plans to take Harry to buy school supplies.
- 36:44So that's the ending part.
- 36:45And I think we start out with another standout quote.
- 36:48I'm not paying for some crackpot old fool to teach him magic tricks.
- 36:53~ again, that's
- 36:55a movie success, you know.
- 36:57Yeah.
- 36:58Yeah.
- 36:58And then Haggard's response, like, never insult Albus Dumbledore
- 37:04oil.
- 37:04in front of me.
- 37:06He's just so loyal to to Dumbledore.
- 37:10He he won't put up for any any slander against him at all.
- 37:15Right, right.
- 37:16Crackpudled fool.
- 37:17I feel like he would enjoy that.
- 37:19That that nickname.
- 37:22Which got
- 37:22this got me to think, like he's not gonna pay for some crackputtled fool to teach him magic tricks.
- 37:27It made me think, how much does tuition cost at Hogwarts?
- 37:31'Cause it's a school, they feed them, they board them and everything, you know.
- 37:34You'd think it it would be a private school?
- 37:37I don't know.
- 37:39~
- 37:41I was wondering 'cause it says something like his name's been down ever since he was born.
- 37:45And it's like what is that process like?
- 37:47Does like does someone put them on a waiting list or or do they just like pick wizards to go there?
- 37:54Like, I don't know.
- 37:55from the the wizarding birth hospital, women's hospital.
- 37:59Saint Mungus' Saint Mungo's women's hospital.
- 38:06And
- 38:06they Yeah, they just have they keep track of to make sure they're not squibs, basically.
- 38:14So
- 38:14Does anyone get to be like ten years old and then their parents are like, man, we forgot to sign them up.
- 38:20Is there any spots available?
- 38:21You know?
- 38:22I don't know.
- 38:23not.
- 38:23I'm sure not.
- 38:24'Cause they didn't Harry wasn't signed up, He's not that special.
- 38:30but I did look it up and it says that turns out Hogwarts is completely free.
- 38:35It's like government funded, obviously, 'cause there's one government for that that school.
- 38:42So it's pretty easy to fund.
- 38:44~ but I mean they are in charge of
- 38:48their own funds, like buying their school supplies, their owl, their their I don't know, their robes, uniforms, stuff like that.
- 38:58All the stuff on the list.
- 38:59And then I guess they're spending money.
- 39:02I I guess that makes sense, like, you know, when we get to the Weasleys that, you know, their family doesn't have a lot of money.
- 39:08H they wouldn't really be able to afford to send them to to private school, so it kinda makes sense, like.
- 39:13even worse for Molly, 'cause w they have to buy stuff at the beginning of the year, but they have hand me downs.
- 39:19~
- 39:20struggle.
- 39:20They have to get second hand books and stuff.
- 39:23Molly.
- 39:24Sheesh.
- 39:24You're talented.
- 39:25You have usable skills.
- 39:29Yeah.
- 39:31You don't even have to pay for tuition, like it's fine.
- 39:34Ha ha ha.
- 39:35Maybe she doesn't need to get a job then, but whatever.
- 39:38I w
- 39:41I just wish she would have gotten a job after Jenny goes.
- 39:44That that would have made it so fun.
- 39:45She could have been like, I've started my new career.
- 39:49Yeah.
- 39:49I don't know what she would have done.
- 39:51Anyways, ~ so yeah, completely free at Hogwarts.
- 39:56But he finally realizes all of the things that made him question whether he was a wizard or not.
- 40:02And it's all starting to make sense.
- 40:03Like the him running from Dudley and his gang and jumping force jumping onto the roof ~ the Brazilian Python deal.
- 40:17Vanishing glass, yeah.
- 40:18~ Yep.
- 40:21So it's all making sense now.
- 40:22And then Dudley becomes a pig.
- 40:26Almost.
- 40:27Haggard in the commotion he shoots his umbrella at Dudley and he grows a little pigtail.
- 40:34Which is so funny.
- 40:35I always thought like in the next one, I guess we can talk about that next week, but
- 40:40How do they explain that to the hospital to get that off?
- 40:44That's like you gotta be sworn to secrecy or something.
- 40:47that's crazy.
- 40:48I c I feel like I can't remember if it's in this one or in the next one.
- 40:54At some point they do refer back to ~ him going to the hospital to have it taken off or something like that.
- 41:00But yeah.
- 41:01nine and nine and three quarters.
- 41:03He's like, Well, we're just going there anyways, so we will take you.
- 41:09Yeah.
- 41:10But we'll get into that later.
- 41:11This is chapter four.
- 41:12Chapter four.
- 41:13My bad.
- 41:14yeah, Yeah, Hagrid points his umbrella at Dudley.
- 41:19Flash of violet light, sound of a firecracker, a sharp squeal.
- 41:23The next second Dudley was dancing on the spot with his hands clasped over his fat bottom.
- 41:28Harry saw
- 41:28a curly pig's tail poking through the hole of his trousers.
- 41:31Mm-hmm.
- 41:32He got his just desserts.
- 41:35Haggard says, shouldn't have lost me temper, but it didn't work anyway, meant to turn him into a pig.
- 41:39I guess he was so much like a pig anyway, he wasn't much left to do.
- 41:43Hopefully
- 41:43this is Dudley's final stray.
- 41:45We'll see.
- 41:46Kinda starting
- 41:47to feel bad for the kid.
- 41:48Man.
- 41:49~ and then ~
- 41:50after this we do get a little bit of Hagrid's backstory 'cause he you know, he's like,
- 41:55I I I hope you don't mention this to anybody at school.
- 41:58strictly speaking, I'm not supposed to do magic.
- 42:01And he he mentions how he was expelled from Hogwarts in his third year.
- 42:06but Dumbledore kept him on and everything.
- 42:09Great
- 42:09man, Dumbledore.
- 42:10Great Matt Namador.
- 42:12Yeah, that's awesome.
- 42:14That must have been awkward though for him getting expelled and then all of like he just stays there and all of his classmates are just like, Hey Hagrid.
- 42:22Miss you in class today.
- 42:27Yeah, that's crazy.
- 42:28I get I get to tell you what to do.
- 42:31I'm ol I'm thirteen years old.
- 42:35I wanna see a little mini series of of Hagrid throughout his young years.
- 42:41Mm.
- 42:42And Harry does try and ask why were you expelled?
- 42:44And he's like, It's getting late.
- 42:45There's lots to do tomorrow, ~ Gotta go into town, get your books and all.
- 42:51So
- 42:51book.
- 42:52Maybe in the second book.
- 42:53Chamber of Secrets, maybe.
- 42:54I don't know what that's about, Setting it right
- 42:57up.
- 42:58That's pretty cool.
- 43:00So
- 43:01Yeah, and then next time we're off to Dygon Alley to do a little bit of shopping.
- 43:07I love this next chapter.
- 43:08I'm so excited for next week.
- 43:11Be fun.
- 43:12Alright, well do you want to go ahead and see what's on the trolleys?
- 43:16Yeah, I could I could ha do a little snack.
- 43:18So last week we finally got something new.
- 43:21The fizzing whisbies.
- 43:23So I have a strong feeling it's just gonna be a a Birdie Bots bean.
- 43:27But we
- 43:27will see.
- 43:28Are you ready to spin the wheel?
- 43:30I'm
- 43:30ready.
- 43:35What could it be?
- 43:36Droubles!
- 43:37We got a double whammy.
- 43:40Okay.
- 43:40We
- 43:41got spared the birdie bots this week.
- 43:43Yes, thank goodness.
- 43:45Okay.
- 43:46So this is a quote from the fourth movie we learn about Drubles.
- 43:52There I'm sure we do in this book too, but ~ on the trolley Ron's like, just the Drubles Yep, just just just the Drubles.
- 44:01And that's a big inside quote for us.
- 44:03So it's Drobles Best Blowing Gum.
- 44:06If you wanna show the package to them, Jonathan.
- 44:08Yeah, ~ here's the the label here.
- 44:10~ it's hard to see here.
- 44:14Finest quality Jubals
- 44:15blowing gum.
- 44:17They're these blue ~ bubble gums here.
- 44:21They're fine quality.
- 44:23They're pretty shiny, honestly.
- 44:25I feel like we'll just have to see how it is.
- 44:27We have to blow bubble.
- 44:28~ my.
- 44:31~ crunchy.
- 44:32Mm-hmm.
- 44:35Takes forever to chew.
- 44:36I know.
- 44:38Well.
- 44:39Yeah.
- 44:39gumball in years.
- 44:42Or
- 44:42had bubblegum.
- 44:44This is great.
- 44:45I'll have to report back later on how long the the flavor lasts.
- 44:48Hate to say it, this is not double bubble.
- 44:50It tastes great though.
- 44:52It has a good taste.
- 44:53It feels like it's gonna be hard to blow a bubble.
- 44:56I don't know if this is gonna
- 44:57be the best blowing gun.
- 44:59Okay.
- 45:00I'm gonna go for it.
- 45:02Okay.
- 45:02Make you.
- 45:03I already broke it.
- 45:06Man, this is gonna take forever.
- 45:07Yeah.
- 45:08Three hours later.
- 45:10Maybe it's prank gum.
- 45:13Maybe it's a prank, like it never gets to be bubble blowing.
- 45:16I think I need two of I feel like I don't have enough.
- 45:20Hm.
- 45:21And it's losing its flavor already by the time
- 45:22it gets malleable enough.
- 45:25If we were doing a tier list, I might put this on the bottom.
- 45:27Yeah.
- 45:28I imagine Drew Rule's best blowing gum in the wizarding world is ~ the biggest bubbles indestructible.
- 45:33~
- 45:34that's gotta be fun.
- 45:35Yeah.
- 45:36Hm.
- 45:37What a shame.
- 45:38That one didn't really pan out for us, but it tasted good.
- 45:42Yeah.
- 45:43And I'm already losing losing flavor.
- 45:46I'm gonna spit it out in a minute.
- 45:48It's been two minutes, I think.
- 45:49I'm not quitting 'til I get a bubble.
- 45:51It's just not good.
- 45:53It's not working.
- 45:54Huh.
- 45:55This is great for the mic.
- 45:57Yeah.
- 45:57I'm I'm giving up.
- 45:59Me too.
- 46:00I've lost the flavor.
- 46:01Yeah.
- 46:02It pops as soon as I stick my tongue out.
- 46:04All right.
- 46:05Stick it by my ear.
- 46:07Okay, so that was a dud.
- 46:10up I wanted to blow a bubble with that.
- 46:13Better than a vomit flavoured
- 46:14birdie bond, but still, wasn't very satisfying.
- 46:19true.
- 46:19Feel like I've been able to even
- 46:21blow a bubble with like a chiclet before.
- 46:23You
- 46:24know, if you get enough of maybe.
- 46:26Feels so sad.
- 46:28Yeah.
- 46:28Tasted good, but yeah, and then just the flavor.
- 46:31It's just it doesn't last very long.
- 46:32Yeah.
- 46:35This podcast is officially an anti Drubles podcast.
- 46:39Yeah.
- 46:39Now I just feel bad for Ron.
- 46:41that's all he could get was the Jubals.
- 46:43Yeah, I can't even blow a bubble with that.
- 46:46Guys, I promise we can blow bubbles.
- 46:49Like we know how to blow bubbles.
- 46:51Like that's
- 46:51that we could do that.
- 46:53It's just poorly done.
- 46:56Dried up gum.
- 46:59Ugh Alright.
