- 1:01Speaker 1: Basement Dreams, From Sitting in the Basement to Walking in
- 1:04Speaker 1: God's Purpose. We're going to talk to Chris not only
- 1:06Speaker 1: about the writing of the book, but as of today,
- 1:09Speaker 1: the book is an Amazon bestseller in two categories. So
- 1:13Speaker 1: you guys definitely have to get your copy of it. Chris,
- 1:15Speaker 1: welcome back to the broadcast, man. Hey, Cyrus.
- 1:18Speaker 2: Thanks for having me.
- 1:19Speaker 1: Hey, glad to do it. And there's your other half, Kate. Hey, Kate,
- 1:23Speaker 1: good to see you as well. So Kate, Kate, if
- 1:25Speaker 1: you're just hearing the news as well, Chris's book is
- 1:29Speaker 1: actually a bestseller in two categories today. As we're having
- 1:33Speaker 1: this conversation, Chris, you know, as I mentioned, the paperback
- 1:36Speaker 1: edition of the books will be coming out. You have pictures.
- 1:38Speaker 1: They're going to be included in that as well. What
- 1:41Speaker 1: has it been like for you to see the way
- 1:42Speaker 1: that people respond in the basement dreams?
- 1:45Speaker 2: It's been good.
- 1:47Speaker 3: It's been, It's nice knowing that people are picking it
- 1:51Speaker 3: up and having a good read and it's helping people.
- 1:55Speaker 1: Yeah. So this is interesting, Chris. First of all, I'm
- 1:58Speaker 1: sure you have people say to you, hey, Dr. Tina,
- 2:01Speaker 1: good to see you over there on IG. Chris wrote
- 2:03Speaker 1: a book.
- 2:06Speaker 4: Yes, yes, yes.
- 2:07Speaker 1: You know, I think, you know, Chris, you know, you
- 2:09Speaker 1: are known to be a person of very few words. Very,
- 2:12Speaker 1: very few words. What has been the response when you
- 2:16Speaker 1: tell people that you wrote a book?
- 2:18Speaker 2: Uh, just that, huh?
- 2:21Speaker 1: You?
- 2:22Speaker 3: And then, but it's that, then it's like, then it's excitement. Like, Oh,
- 2:25Speaker 3: I wonder what he put in there, what he said,
- 2:27Speaker 3: you know, what's going on. Cause he's so quiet.
- 2:30Speaker 1: Right.
- 2:31Speaker 4: Right.
- 2:31Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 2:32Speaker 1: So Chris, why did you think this was the time?
- 2:34Speaker 1: Why did you want to be able to take people
- 2:36Speaker 1: into a bit of your story and also your growth?
- 2:41Speaker 3: Um, well, my wife had a lot to do with it. Um,
- 2:44Speaker 3: sitting back and her writing her book and, And her
- 2:49Speaker 3: explaining to me, well, you know, you have a story, too.
- 2:53Speaker 3: You know, when we sit there and talk about our
- 2:54Speaker 3: past and how far we came.
- 2:58Speaker 2: And so it was a lot on her. And I
- 3:00Speaker 2: sat there and thought about it. And I was like, OK, yeah. Yeah.
- 3:05Speaker 1: Well, I have to say it was great being able
- 3:07Speaker 1: to work with you on this. And as I mentioned
- 3:08Speaker 1: with the paperback edition and also with the updates that
- 3:11Speaker 1: will be on the Kindle side, you're going to be
- 3:13Speaker 1: including pictures in this as well. But, you know, I
- 3:17Speaker 1: think the interesting thing, Chris, about your journey is a
- 3:19Speaker 1: lot of a lot of it, because I didn't know
- 3:22Speaker 1: your story until we started working together on the book,
- 3:25Speaker 1: is that you've had a lot of travel in your
- 3:28Speaker 1: in your life from New York.
- 3:30Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 3:30Speaker 1: You know, Atlanta, you know, of course. Then, of course, Alabama,
- 3:36Speaker 1: you know, Atlanta. What was that like for you to
- 3:40Speaker 1: think about how. not only you have grown, but the
- 3:43Speaker 1: different places where different events happen in your life.
- 3:47Speaker 2: Uh, yeah, they've, they've grown and changed every place.
- 3:50Speaker 3: Um, cause you know, I've, I've been back to all
- 3:53Speaker 3: those places and each time, like there's been a geographical change,
- 3:58Speaker 3: like everything's gotten bigger or more, more buildings and.
- 4:01Speaker 2: Stuff like that.
- 4:02Speaker 3: So yeah, it's almost like, it feels like I got,
- 4:07Speaker 3: let me say this right. Like, It got bigger, so
- 4:12Speaker 3: it felt like I got smaller. Everything else got big.
- 4:17Speaker 3: Or is it the other way around? I think it's small.
- 4:20Speaker 2: Might be smaller.
- 4:21Speaker 3: Because I was smaller, so everything else got smaller.
- 4:27Speaker 1: Because I got bigger. Got it. Well, Chris, I think
- 4:31Speaker 1: one of the interesting things about Basement Dreams, and we're
- 4:33Speaker 1: going to talk to our audience about where the title
- 4:35Speaker 1: comes from, is that one thing that I think people
- 4:38Speaker 1: may be surprised about that they'll read about in the book, um,
- 4:43Speaker 1: is your, the way you look at yourself. I mean,
- 4:45Speaker 1: you haven't always had the highest regard for yourself, you know,
- 4:50Speaker 1: and what was that like for you for one thing
- 4:52Speaker 1: to reflect on, but then to be able to share
- 4:54Speaker 1: that and talk about it in the book.
- 4:57Speaker 3: Um, it felt, uh, it was like a weightlifting once
- 5:03Speaker 3: I was able to talk about it and, and sit
- 5:06Speaker 3: back and thought about the things that, uh, how I
- 5:10Speaker 3: felt and what I've been through and how I looked
- 5:12Speaker 3: at things. Um, I've, I feel I've gotten way stronger.
- 5:17Speaker 3: Like everything happens for a reason. I think, uh, the
- 5:23Speaker 3: process that I went through made me stronger for today.
- 5:26Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 5:28Speaker 1: Well, I think it's great. And it's so interesting that
- 5:31Speaker 1: now it seems like writing is, you know, just a
- 5:33Speaker 1: part of your family because not only did you have,
- 5:36Speaker 1: did you have Kate, Of course, he was also an author.
- 5:39Speaker 1: You have your own mother. So what was your mom's
- 5:42Speaker 1: response to you saying, Mom, I'm going to write a book?
- 5:47Speaker 2: She was happy. Oh, wow.
- 5:49Speaker 1: Okay.
- 5:50Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 5:52Speaker 1: Is that something she always thought you'd do?
- 5:54Speaker 2: No.
- 5:55Speaker 1: No, no, no. Okay.
- 5:55Speaker 2: No, no, no. Not at all. Because, you know, me,
- 6:00Speaker 2: I'm to myself, for the most part, say little but
- 6:05Speaker 2: say a lot.
- 6:06Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 6:06Speaker 2: And.
- 6:08Speaker 3: I think she was just excited to see and hear
- 6:11Speaker 3: what I had to say.
- 6:12Speaker 2: Right. You know, in my travels.
- 6:15Speaker 1: So the title of the book is Basement Dreams. Talk
- 6:19Speaker 1: to us about the title and what it was like
- 6:21Speaker 1: for you to reflect on that title.
- 6:24Speaker 3: Well, a lot of people know me as being in
- 6:27Speaker 3: my grandmother's basement. It was like my fortress of solitude.
- 6:32Speaker 3: And a lot of thoughts and And reflections went on
- 6:39Speaker 3: down there. And a lot of people, like, if they
- 6:44Speaker 3: was looking for me, that's where they would find me,
- 6:46Speaker 3: in the basement.
- 6:47Speaker 2: Whether it be watching a movie or playing a video
- 6:49Speaker 2: game or down there asleep. That was my place.
- 6:57Speaker 1: Where you are today, Chris, is this where you saw yourself?
- 7:01Speaker 1: Is this what you thought would be possible for you?
- 7:04Speaker 2: No. But it was something.
- 7:07Speaker 3: That I've wanted when I was younger, you know, a
- 7:08Speaker 3: family and a house working on a white picket fence.
- 7:14Speaker 1: Right. Yeah.
- 7:15Speaker 3: But I never, never thought it would happen. But it
- 7:19Speaker 3: was something that I always aimed and wanted.
- 7:25Speaker 1: You know. You know, in her book, B2B on the Tears,
- 7:28Speaker 1: your wife, Kate, she talks about your journey together, the
- 7:33Speaker 1: things you all have been through. Um, you don't talk
- 7:36Speaker 1: as much about that in, in your book, but what
- 7:39Speaker 1: was it like for you to be able to give
- 7:41Speaker 1: your thoughts? I mean, she was able to write her
- 7:43Speaker 1: thoughts about different things you've gone through, but what was
- 7:45Speaker 1: it like for you to kind of think about experiences
- 7:47Speaker 1: in your life that have shaped you and to be
- 7:50Speaker 1: able to share those in your book?
- 7:53Speaker 2: Um, it felt good. It felt good.
- 7:55Speaker 3: And, um, you know, going down memory lane, there was
- 7:58Speaker 3: some parts that I made it through that, um, I
- 8:01Speaker 3: didn't think I, um, would make it through and, uh,
- 8:06Speaker 3: reflecting on it, you know, talking about it, did bring
- 8:09Speaker 3: up some old memories where, you know, it hurt like
- 8:11Speaker 3: a lot of loss.
- 8:12Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 8:12Speaker 3: But, um, like, you know, there was some, uh, things that, uh,
- 8:18Speaker 3: talking about, uh, reminded me of, you know, what I
- 8:21Speaker 3: lost and some things like I forgot.
- 8:23Speaker 1: Yeah. I think writing head is one of those interesting
- 8:29Speaker 1: things that can be kind of therapeutic in one sense. Um,
- 8:32Speaker 1: you know, and being able to help you, To flesh
- 8:35Speaker 1: things out. But also, like you said, you're bringing it back.
- 8:38Speaker 1: And it does kind of add sometimes things that you
- 8:41Speaker 1: didn't even realize, you know, were there. What was one
- 8:44Speaker 1: of the most difficult things that you that you revisited
- 8:47Speaker 1: for the book?
- 8:49Speaker 2: The loss of even now, my brothers, Jimmy and Kato.
- 8:57Speaker 1: Yeah. And I think this is something that is so important, though, Chris,
- 9:01Speaker 1: I'm so glad you included it. In fact, I should
- 9:03Speaker 1: let our audience know, Chris reached out to me after
- 9:07Speaker 1: we were first working on the release. After it was
- 9:10Speaker 1: out on Amazon, the Kindle, he's like, you know, I
- 9:14Speaker 1: want to talk about this. I want to make sure
- 9:15Speaker 1: that we get this in here. And it was, you know,
- 9:18Speaker 1: even during that time, Chris, I know it was difficult
- 9:21Speaker 1: for you to be able to talk about, but do
- 9:23Speaker 1: you find that's part of, I know it's part of
- 9:25Speaker 1: keeping their memory alive, but is it also... part of
- 9:28Speaker 1: your healing, you think, being able to talk about them.
- 9:30Speaker 2: Yeah, because it's it's.
- 9:37Speaker 3: I don't know, like, to me, it's very therapeutic, and
- 9:40Speaker 3: to me, it's just good memories. Yeah.
- 9:43Speaker 1: Yeah. Jennifer says, love you, Chris. And definitely, you know,
- 9:48Speaker 1: I think having that support system is such a big thing.
- 9:51Speaker 1: I want to say, for those who are just tuning in, welcome.
- 9:53Speaker 1: You're watching Cyrus where it presents. We're excited to welcome
- 9:55Speaker 1: back author and speaker media personality, Christopher Thurman to our
- 10:00Speaker 1: broadcast today. You guys know him as a cohost of
- 10:03Speaker 1: graceful gatherings with the Thurman's with his wife. I just
- 10:05Speaker 1: saw another episode of that was posted on social media.
- 10:08Speaker 1: He's also a speaker. He has a nonprofit that his
- 10:12Speaker 1: wife and him are the founders of, but also he's
- 10:15Speaker 1: the author of the new book, the Kendall edition of,
- 10:17Speaker 1: is out now. The print edition is coming soon called
- 10:20Speaker 1: Basement Dreams. And as we're just now coming in, you
- 10:23Speaker 1: know that the book as of today is an Amazon bestseller.
- 10:28Speaker 1: What is that like to think about, Chris, that this
- 10:30Speaker 1: story that you share that's so personal that one, people
- 10:34Speaker 1: are reading it, but also that you now are an
- 10:38Speaker 1: Amazon bestseller?
- 10:39Speaker 2: That feels great. I'm ready for another book now.
- 10:43Speaker 1: What? What? Oh, Oh, okay. Uh, I, Kate put the
- 10:51Speaker 1: voice note down where there's no other book. I don't
- 10:55Speaker 1: want to hear a message about it. It was a joke.
- 11:01Speaker 1: He was joking, but, but I mean, but, but what was,
- 11:04Speaker 1: do you feel like the process was something, I mean,
- 11:07Speaker 1: cause again, you saw Kate go through it. The process
- 11:10Speaker 1: was something that made you, uh, want to be an
- 11:13Speaker 1: experience that again. Yeah.
- 11:15Speaker 2: It's, um, I wouldn't mind it.
- 11:17Speaker 1: Yeah. Yeah. Well, I tell you, that's the big thing. Now,
- 11:22Speaker 1: there's another thing I want to talk to you about
- 11:23Speaker 1: that is in the book, but I think also is
- 11:26Speaker 1: a great reminder for us. And that is, you know,
- 11:29Speaker 1: about change. Right. I mean, you have gone through changes
- 11:34Speaker 1: in your life. You know, people around you have gone
- 11:37Speaker 1: through changes. As you mentioned, the places you're used to
- 11:40Speaker 1: going to have gone through changes. What has it been
- 11:43Speaker 1: like for you to look in the mirror today, Chris,
- 11:45Speaker 1: and think about the Chris Thurman you used to be?
- 11:47Speaker 2: I think I'm proud of where I'm at.
- 11:54Speaker 1: Okay.
- 11:57Speaker 3: I haven't changed that much, like a little hair here.
- 12:00Speaker 3: My mom says I have a baby face. But, yeah,
- 12:06Speaker 3: I feel proud, and I wouldn't change anything. All the
- 12:12Speaker 3: experiences that I have gone through made who I am today.
- 12:15Speaker 2: I'm proud of who I am.
- 12:18Speaker 3: I'm able to take care of my family and friends
- 12:21Speaker 3: and help people when I can. A lot of that
- 12:25Speaker 3: has to do with my upbringing and the things that
- 12:28Speaker 3: I've gone through, the things that I've seen, the things
- 12:30Speaker 3: that I made it out of.
- 12:33Speaker 1: What was it about your upbringing that helped Caden you
- 12:39Speaker 1: to start the nonprofit Angelically Blessed? What was it that
- 12:44Speaker 1: you saw that made this something that was something that
- 12:47Speaker 1: you all were doing even before you had the nonprofit?
- 12:49Speaker 1: Our audience should know. But why was that so important
- 12:52Speaker 1: for you to make sure you were able to get
- 12:53Speaker 1: back to other people?
- 12:54Speaker 3: Because it's just a great feeling to be able to
- 12:58Speaker 3: help people. And I was blessed to find a wife
- 13:03Speaker 3: who has a heart like mine. And, you know, us
- 13:06Speaker 3: getting together and helping people is just a great feeling.
- 13:09Speaker 1: Yeah. I got another Chris in the chat. Hey, Chris Irwin,
- 13:13Speaker 1: good to be to see you. Chris says changes would
- 13:15Speaker 1: be a good book title. Yeah. Changes is that. And
- 13:19Speaker 1: you know what? Yeah. Chris changes, but also acceptance. Right. Um,
- 13:26Speaker 1: because unfortunately there's some things in life we can't change. Right.
- 13:31Speaker 1: With some things we have to accept, whether it is
- 13:34Speaker 1: dealing with loss or dealing with different things. Um, what
- 13:37Speaker 1: has that been like for you to help other people
- 13:39Speaker 1: understand the importance of not judging themselves by what they
- 13:43Speaker 1: used to do or who they used to be?
- 13:46Speaker 2: Um, it's, uh, I don't know. Wait, what was the question?
- 13:51Speaker 2: I'm sorry.
- 13:51Speaker 1: Yeah. Yeah. What has it been like for you based
- 13:53Speaker 1: on your own experience to let other people know that
- 13:56Speaker 1: they shouldn't judge themselves based on what they used to
- 13:59Speaker 1: do or who they used to be?
- 14:01Speaker 3: Well, and, and, and helping people like that and, uh,
- 14:06Speaker 3: or having talks with people that, and, seeing like a
- 14:08Speaker 3: light bulb wall where they, and telling them that, you know,
- 14:12Speaker 3: you don't let the, uh, your past define you. And yeah, we,
- 14:17Speaker 3: you know, know that, that, uh, you can change and,
- 14:21Speaker 3: and don't let one mistake end you.
- 14:25Speaker 1: Right.
- 14:25Speaker 3: Uh, seeing them like there once, once it, once it clicks, like, well, yeah,
- 14:30Speaker 3: I can do this.
- 14:31Speaker 2: I can do that.
- 14:31Speaker 3: Seeing that change in them is, is just great. You know,
- 14:36Speaker 3: being able to do that and, help them with that.
- 14:40Speaker 1: Have you found they've been surprised to think about some
- 14:42Speaker 1: of the things that you've done, uh, and the changes
- 14:45Speaker 1: you've made?
- 14:46Speaker 2: Um, that for some, yes.
- 14:51Speaker 3: Cause some, you know, some people, uh, they don't, when
- 14:55Speaker 3: they see me now, they don't, you know, they don't
- 14:57Speaker 3: see like, what you use, use that.
- 14:59Speaker 2: Yeah. So it was like, so some people don't, you know, they,
- 15:03Speaker 2: they don't know.
- 15:04Speaker 1: You're right.
- 15:05Speaker 3: But in talking to him, the look of like, wow, okay,
- 15:10Speaker 3: he did all that. They'll ask me like, wow, okay,
- 15:12Speaker 3: you was able to do that? You used to do that?
- 15:14Speaker 2: And like, yeah. And here I am, you know, but God.
- 15:20Speaker 1: Yeah. Well, if y'all read the book, you'll know. I mean,
- 15:26Speaker 1: so that's the thing. And that is the cool thing
- 15:29Speaker 1: about you sharing the story again, Chris, which, you know, again,
- 15:33Speaker 1: it is... it reminds people of what they can do,
- 15:38Speaker 1: but also how, even when it comes to loss or
- 15:41Speaker 1: changes that may happen, um, how there's still hope. And
- 15:46Speaker 1: I think that's the thing. So when people read, uh,
- 15:48Speaker 1: basement dreams, Chris, what do you want them to think
- 15:51Speaker 1: about when it comes to themselves and their own purpose?
- 15:55Speaker 3: Um, well, for one that you're not alone, God is
- 15:58Speaker 3: always there. Uh, he's, uh, there even when, when you
- 16:04Speaker 3: don't think he is. And that nobody's perfect. Everybody makes mistakes. So,
- 16:13Speaker 3: you know, you're not alone in that because nobody is perfect.
- 16:18Speaker 3: So you should be able.
- 16:19Speaker 4: To, in reading it, know that you're not alone and
- 16:24Speaker 4: you can come back from just about anything, especially when
- 16:27Speaker 4: you have God in your corner and he is always
- 16:29Speaker 4: in your corner.
- 16:31Speaker 1: Yeah. uh, exclusively go hello to you over there on
- 16:34Speaker 1: IG new page. Hello to you over there on IG as,
- 16:37Speaker 1: as well. Uh, Jennifer says with God, all things are possible.
- 16:41Speaker 1: And I think that is, is definitely true. Are you
- 16:43Speaker 1: at a point, um, Chris now looking back and thinking about,
- 16:47Speaker 1: especially now this year, writing your first book and now
- 16:51Speaker 1: being able to have interviews like this and that you've
- 16:52Speaker 1: been doing other interviews as well, talking about it. Are
- 16:56Speaker 1: you at a place where you can look at yourself
- 16:58Speaker 1: and say that you're proud of you? Yes. Yes.
- 17:01Speaker 2: Uh, like, um, It's one of those things where yes
- 17:06Speaker 2: and no. I want to keep that little edge to
- 17:08Speaker 2: where I'm not comfortable.
- 17:10Speaker 3: It's a little self-discipline to where I'm not comfortable and
- 17:18Speaker 3: not doing anything.
- 17:19Speaker 2: It's like, nah, you can do better. It keeps me
- 17:22Speaker 2: going forward.
- 17:23Speaker 1: I think that's a great thing for all of us
- 17:28Speaker 1: to be able to have that thing where we never
