- 0:00Welcome to Tabernacle Talk. Tabernacle Talk is a Bible study
- 0:03podcast from Tabernacle Baptist Church in Essex, MD.
- 0:08We hope that this podcast will help you to know Christ, grow in
- 0:11his word, and show his love to others.
- 0:14Let's dive right in. Welcome back to Tabernacle Talk.
- 0:16Today we are in James one and verses 19 through 21.
- 0:21This is kind of special for me. My very first sermon that I ever
- 0:25preached back in 6th grade was on James 119 through 21.
- 0:32And so this is a, a near and dear portion of scripture to me.
- 0:37And I, I think I mentioned in the last episode, it's probably
- 0:40been 1617 years since I preached that.
- 0:45And so looking forward to diving into God's word with you today
- 0:51once again, just by way of a summary of like where we are,
- 0:55what we're doing it in the book of James.
- 0:57The book of James is written from the pastor at Jerusalem,
- 1:03James, the half brother of Jesus.
- 1:05And he's writing to people that were once a part of his
- 1:08congregation, but due to persecution, they'd been
- 1:10scattered all across the Roman Empire.
- 1:13So he's writing to them some things that they need to know
- 1:17and adopt and be encouraged and challenged in for their
- 1:20Christian walk wherever they are.
- 1:23And so we're going to pick up today in verses 19 through 21,
- 1:26going to read through the verses and then we'll learn together.
- 1:29He says, My dear brothers and sisters, understand this.
- 1:33Everyone should be quick to listen, slow to speak, and slow
- 1:38to anger, for human anger does not accomplish God's
- 1:43righteousness. Therefore, riding yourselves of
- 1:48all moral filth and the evil that is so prevalent, humbly
- 1:53receive the implanted word which is able to save your souls.
- 2:00Love these verses. And we're going to start off in
- 2:04verse #19 here. My dear brothers and sisters,
- 2:08understand this. There's something vital that you
- 2:11and I have got to know. He says everyone should be quick
- 2:17to listen, slow to speak and slow to anger.
- 2:22First here, quick to listen. That we would speedily be those
- 2:28that choose to exercise the faculty of hearing.
- 2:33So many times in my life I am. I'm quick to speak and I am slow
- 2:38to listen. But when we listen to others, it
- 2:44will help us out in so many ways in our lives.
- 2:47Number one, people will feel more loved by us when we are
- 2:52quick to just hear. Proverbs would say this to us
- 2:57that even a fool when he holds his tongue is considered wise
- 3:04and man. That is so, so true when you
- 3:08have people, I know there's someones in my life, some dear
- 3:11friends, even some dear friends at Tabernacle that they, they
- 3:14don't say a whole lot and they're not always running their
- 3:17mouth. And it means that when they do
- 3:20end up talking, everyone wants to listen because they go, oh
- 3:24man, this is, you know, if you will, this is new, this isn't
- 3:27normal. And I got to be honest as a, as
- 3:32a pastor and as someone that like a large portion of my job
- 3:36means that I've got to say some words.
- 3:40This is something that I am constantly like asking the Lord
- 3:44for some wisdom on that. I would be like, all right, God,
- 3:50I know that I'm going to be saying words, but I just I don't
- 3:54want to simply speak for the sake of speaking.
- 3:58When I talk, I want it to be the words of God that I'm saying.
- 4:03I don't want to say my own thoughts.
- 4:04I don't want to be led by just whatever fancy fits me at the
- 4:10moment. Instead, I want to have
- 4:14something meaningful to be able to speak into others lives.
- 4:18One great way to improve your speaking is to listen to others
- 4:24and to respond back to others in in a way that shows that you
- 4:29were listening. So just some practical
- 4:32applications of this. When someone asks you to pray
- 4:36for something with them, either number one, pray with them right
- 4:40then and there for it. My friend Owen does that a lot.
- 4:43And I've had many friends through the years that have that
- 4:46have done that. And that's always a blessing to
- 4:47me #2 when someone has asked you to pray for something, ask them
- 4:52later about it or be like, hey, you asked me to pray for this
- 4:56family member. How's that situation going?
- 4:59Or have they heard anything new back yet?
- 5:03I got to be honest, there's probably 1000 different ways in
- 5:05which I can improve in that. One of the other things is that
- 5:10as a pastor, I get so many prayer requests and I'm so
- 5:17grateful for it. It's why I try to write down
- 5:20whatever I can So many times when someone asked me like, hey,
- 5:25would you pray for this? I try to put like a reminder on
- 5:28my phone. I put it like, if it's a surgery
- 5:33or doctor's appointment or something, I try to put it on my
- 5:35calendar. So that way I'll see it that day
- 5:38and we'll know, OK, this is happening at, you know, 10 AM
- 5:41for them. And so I'm going to be praying
- 5:42for them. I, I try to find some like if
- 5:45you will trick some ways, because my brain, my memory,
- 5:49it's not good enough to always remember everything that I need
- 5:52to remember for people. And so for you even as well, you
- 5:56can utilize, you've got a phone, you've got a laptop, you've got
- 6:00a tablet, whatever. Use those tools to be able to
- 6:04help you to listen better in conversation with someone.
- 6:09That seems to be at least partially what James is looking
- 6:11at here in these verses is because we are to be quick to
- 6:14listen, slow to speak, and slow to anger.
- 6:17It seems to be in our conversations with people,
- 6:20especially when there is disagreement or perhaps someone
- 6:25was offended or, or something. When we're in those kinds of
- 6:30conversations with people, we're not just listening for, OK, how
- 6:33can I respond? We want to listen for all right.
- 6:36I want to understand where they're coming from, what
- 6:40they're saying, what they're like goals or expectations are
- 6:45for the outcome of this conversation.
- 6:47And I want to, you know, I, I want to at the very least be
- 6:51able to articulate it back to them in a way that is that shows
- 6:58that I've been listening and that I care and that I
- 7:01understand where they're coming from.
- 7:03Now, even as a pastor, there are times where someone, you know,
- 7:07maybe wants to do something at the church and maybe we don't
- 7:12have the resources for it. Maybe we don't have the time for
- 7:14it. Maybe something, you know,
- 7:16doesn't have a place within a a Christian worship service.
- 7:21Like it doesn't fit in in that Ave. and I might have to say no,
- 7:26like like we, we can't do that. But if I can say that and
- 7:30articulate that paired with, Hey, here's what I hear you
- 7:35saying, here's what you love. Here's here's like your goal in
- 7:38this and those are all really great things.
- 7:41And especially if I listen and I understand, then God might give
- 7:45me some ability to say, Hey, this doesn't work in this
- 7:50particular scenario or in this particular way.
- 7:52But what if we, you know, channeled that energy?
- 7:57What if we did this thing in this place or at this time or
- 8:00with this group of people or in like a smaller scale than what
- 8:04you were thinking? That is, that's just such a
- 8:09benefit to people that they would be able to experience and
- 8:13know love because they've genuinely been listened to.
- 8:16That's something I, I confident I screw up in every single week.
- 8:22Any spouse probably feels that way that they screw up, but that
- 8:28is something that I want to pursue in my life because it's
- 8:30valuable and it's valuable for you as well.
- 8:32So everyone should be quick to listen.
- 8:34Everyone should be slow to speak, that we would not rush
- 8:39into answering. We're not just waiting for
- 8:42people to stop talking so then we can put in our two cents, but
- 8:46that we would genuinely realize all right, in the multitude of
- 8:50words, there is no lack of sin, as Proverbs tells us.
- 8:54And so I want to be very careful that the words that I would say
- 8:57would be from the word of God. So everyone should be quick to
- 9:01listen, slow to speak, and slow to anger.
- 9:05This is one of the ways that God is described over and over and
- 9:09over again in the Old Testament. I think I've mentioned before
- 9:14that phrase is long of nostril in Hebrew is kind of the idiom
- 9:19for it kind of in the same way that we would use the phrase
- 9:25they've got a short fuse would be something that we'd say,
- 9:29which is like, you know, dynamite or some explosive that
- 9:33has just a short fuse and then it explodes.
- 9:37That long of nostril in Hebrew is like for, for a breath of
- 9:42fury or anger. Like when you, you know, you
- 9:44take a deep breath before you or, or, or when you're angry,
- 9:49someone might tell you, hey, you know, take a deep breath, like
- 9:52take a step back. That's the idea of the phrase
- 9:56long of nostril, slow to anger, that it's almost as if God is
- 10:00consistently going all right, here's this thing that I could
- 10:03fly off the handle for, but he goes and he is slow to anger.
- 10:10And that's how we ought to act too, man.
- 10:14A person that's always easily offended, a person that is
- 10:18always flying off the handle, a person that always has some
- 10:22grievance in their life that, oh, I can't believe my family
- 10:26member did this and this waitress at the restaurant did
- 10:28this. And you know, this person at the
- 10:31church stole my seat or did this or that.
- 10:34And you know, the government is this and this and that.
- 10:36Kind of like cantankerous, easily angered, constantly
- 10:41angered against anyone and everything has no place in the
- 10:44life of a believer. That's not who we're called to
- 10:47be. We're called to be quick to
- 10:48listen, slow to speak, and slow to anger.
- 10:52Then James tells us in verse 20 why we should be slow to anger.
- 10:55He says for human anger does not accomplish God's righteousness.
- 11:01This word accomplish would be the Greek word ergon where we
- 11:05would get the word ergonomics. It's human anger doesn't produce
- 11:12God's righteousness and that's what we're called to do 2nd
- 11:16Corinthians 5 and verse 21 that he made him to be sin, to become
- 11:21sin for us so that we might become the righteousness of God
- 11:26in Him every single day. We are called not just to live
- 11:30our existence, but we are to live out the righteousness of
- 11:34God, the the right behavior. Yeah, living in right
- 11:40relationship with God and with others.
- 11:44We're called to accomplish, to produce God's righteousness each
- 11:48and every day. And you cannot accomplish God's
- 11:51righteousness through human anger.
- 11:54You can't. This is what it says.
- 11:56Human anger does not accomplish God's righteousness.
- 11:59The more angry that you are in your life and the more
- 12:03situations that make you angry, you can know that in those
- 12:09moments and in those areas, you are not showing people what God
- 12:13is like, because that's not how God interacts.
- 12:17That's not how God's treated you.
- 12:19And so why in the world would you insist on adopting that as
- 12:23your mindset? Don't do that.
- 12:27And I'm, I'm just looking in the camera.
- 12:29I'm looking at the little like box thing of my face.
- 12:31I'm I'm not angry at any one of you.
- 12:34I know in my life I'm angry far too often.
- 12:36I'm not angry for the right reasons.
- 12:39I'm not angry at my sin nearly as much as I get angry at other
- 12:43people and their shortcomings. But human anger doesn't
- 12:47accomplish God's righteousness. Verse #21 All right, so what's
- 12:51the counter to this? How do we not be angry?
- 12:53How do we follow God? Therefore, riding yourselves,
- 12:57taking it off. This phrase would be normally
- 13:01used like of clothing that it says instead of putting this on
- 13:06every day, take it off every day.
- 13:09It says riding yourselves of all moral filth.
- 13:16This would be a state of moral defilement or corruption, moral
- 13:20uncleanness or vulgarity. This would be evil speaking as
- 13:28well as evil actions, just things that are not in line with
- 13:31the character of God. So he says, take off that stuff,
- 13:34that moral filth and the evil that is so prevalent, that is
- 13:40evil that is in abundance. It's beyond a regular or
- 13:45expected amount. And so riding ourselves of evil,
- 13:49of human anger, of just constant words of, you know, slander or
- 13:56gossip or vulgar talk that we'd say, I want no part to do with
- 14:00any of that. And instead it says, humbly
- 14:03receive the implanted word which is able to save your souls.
- 14:09OK, what's the opposite of being angry all the time?
- 14:13It is receiving God's Word. It's reflecting on the gospel,
- 14:18the message of Jesus, that you are fully and freely forgiven
- 14:22forever through what Jesus accomplished on your behalf in
- 14:25his life and in his death, on the cross and in his
- 14:28resurrection. That you are made a child of
- 14:31God. You have been placed into his
- 14:33family and you are called you. You've been given the Holy
- 14:37Spirit to live inside of you, and you are called to work out,
- 14:41to accomplish, to produce God's righteousness in your life.
- 14:46The opposite of anger and evil speaking is the word of God.
- 14:53I I love the verse in I think it's Psalm 119.
- 14:57I I have to look up the reference again, but it says
- 14:59great peace. Have those that love your law
- 15:02and nothing will offend them. If you're constantly angry,
- 15:08offended, upset, choose instead of that to turn to the Word of
- 15:14God. Look at how God is patient with
- 15:17you and long-suffering. How He has endured every evil
- 15:21thing that you have ever said or done and yet He's not written
- 15:24you off him. He and He hasn't killed you.
- 15:27He hasn't brought you to justice for every wrong thing you've
- 15:30done and instead He's been patient and kind and loving.
- 15:34He has spoken words of life to and over you.
- 15:38And so that's what we're called to do as well.
- 15:40That we would not live our lives in anger, but instead we would
- 15:44live our lives in love of the Word of God.
- 15:47And as we turn to the Word of God over and over and over
- 15:50again, it says it is able to save your souls.
- 15:55That you would be transformed to be able to listen well and show
- 15:59people love through how you listen.
- 16:01God's word would transform you. That you would learn to be slow
- 16:05to speak, that you would be slow to anger because you recognize
- 16:11who you are and how God has treated you and what God thinks
- 16:14of other people and how he has called you to act and to speak
- 16:18and to love and to think of others.
- 16:21So when it comes to those moments of anger, of hard
- 16:26conversations with other people, choose to walk in the light of
- 16:31the Word of God. Because the more and more that
- 16:34you think about those truths, as you think about like in
- 16:37Ephesians 432, be kind one to another, tender hearted,
- 16:41forgiving one another, just as God for Christ's sake has
- 16:44forgiven you. As you think about verses like
- 16:47that, as you think about verses like don't be deceived for
- 16:52whatever a person sows, that is what they are going to reap.
- 16:56So don't, don't become weary and well doing because you know that
- 17:02you will reap if you do not faint.
- 17:04As you think about those kinds of verses about the love and the
- 17:07forgiveness of Jesus, Now we're to pass it on.
- 17:10That will help you with your anger because you remember, Oh
- 17:13yeah, I'm not the judge and jury.
- 17:15I'm just here to love and appoint people to Jesus.
- 17:18I'm here to produce the righteousness of God in my life.
- 17:22God will bring justice. God will do what's right in this
- 17:26situation all on his own. He doesn't need my help.
- 17:29Vengeance is mine. I will repay, says the Lord, as
- 17:32we would hear from the end of Romans 12.
- 17:35So as a result, how do we deal with anger with the word of God?
- 17:39We understand it, we humbly receive it, and we say, God, you
- 17:43do what's right. I'm going to listen, I'm going
- 17:45to love, I'm going to produce your righteousness, and I'm not
- 17:48going to engage in evil speaking or in evil actions or attitudes.
- 17:53Thanks for tuning in. Hope you have a wonderful day.
