- 0:03Let me ask you something, and I don't want you to answer
- 0:06quickly. I don't want the version of the
- 0:10answer that you've learned to give.
- 0:12I want you to sit with it long enough that it feels
- 0:14uncomfortable. What would happen if people
- 0:17really knew you? Not the version that shows up
- 0:20when everything is fine. Not the version of you that
- 0:23knows how to smile, nod, and say the right things at the right
- 0:28time. I mean the real you.
- 0:31The version of you that exists when nobody is watching.
- 0:34The thoughts that you don't say out loud, the struggles that you
- 0:38don't bring up in conversation. The habits, fears, questions,
- 0:42and battles that you quietly manage on your own.
- 0:45What would happen if that version of you was seen?
- 0:48For a lot of people, the answer isn't peace.
- 0:50It's fear. And that fear, the fear of being
- 0:53found out, ends up shaping far more of our lives than we
- 0:56realize. It determines what we share and
- 0:59what we hide. It shapes how close we let
- 1:02people get. It affects how honest we are
- 1:05with God. And often, it quietly keeps us
- 1:07stuck. Today, we're going to talk about
- 1:11that fear. Not to shame it, not to rush
- 1:14past it, but to understand it and begin moving beyond it.
- 1:20Welcome to Unmasked, the podcast where we take off the masks that
- 1:23we hide behind and step into the kind of honesty that leads to
- 1:28real freedom. I'm your host, Wesley
- 1:30Farnsworth, and today we're beginning a brand new miniseries
- 1:34called From Hiding to Helping. And in this first episode, we're
- 1:38naming something almost everyone experiences but very few people
- 1:43talk about openly. The fear of being found out.
- 1:46This is the fear that keeps us guarded, the fear that convinces
- 1:50us silence is safer than honesty, the fear that whispers
- 1:54if they really knew, everything would change.
- 1:57Let's talk about where that fear comes from and what it costs and
- 2:01why. The very things that we're
- 2:02hiding are often the things that God wants to heal the most.
- 2:07So pull up a chair and let's dig in.
- 2:10This is unmasked. Most people don't hide because
- 2:16they're trying to deceive anyone.
- 2:19They hide because they're trying to survive.
- 2:23Hiding is rarely about dishonesty.
- 2:25It's actually about protection. Somewhere along the way, many of
- 2:30us learned that to be fully known was risky.
- 2:34It felt risky. Maybe you opened up once to
- 2:38someone and they judged you. Maybe honesty cost you trust,
- 2:44position, or relationship. Maybe you grew up in an
- 2:48environment where weakness wasn't safe and questions were
- 2:52not welcomed. Struggles were meant to be
- 2:55handled quietly. So you adapt.
- 3:00You learned how much of yourself was acceptable.
- 3:05You learned which parts of your story to share and which parts
- 3:09to keep locked away. You learned how to manage
- 3:13perception, how to give just enough vulnerability to appear
- 3:17authentic without ever feeling exposed.
- 3:21And over time, that hiding became normal.
- 3:25Not dramatic hiding. Not obvious secrecy.
- 3:30Subtle hiding. Respectable hiding.
- 3:33The kind that looks like strength.
- 3:36The kind that looks like responsibility.
- 3:40The kind that looks like having it all together.
- 3:44The kind that earns respect but quietly drains your soul because
- 3:50hiding takes energy. Say there's a unique kind of
- 3:55exhaustion that comes from pretending.
- 3:58It's not physical tiredness. It's not even emotional burnout.
- 4:03It's soul level fatigue. It's that tired that comes from
- 4:08constantly monitoring yourself, filtering your words, editing
- 4:14your story, and making sure that nothing slips out that might
- 4:18change how people see you. It's the tired that settles in
- 4:24when you realize you're surrounded by people, but you
- 4:27still feel unseen, and the longer that goes on, the heavier
- 4:33it gets. Hiding doesn't drain energy, it
- 4:38slowly erodes joy. You stop laughing freely, you
- 4:44stop resting deeply. You stop praying honestly, you
- 4:50stop believing freedom is possible for you, and you begin
- 4:54to assume that everyone else gets to live unburdened while
- 4:58you you just manage underneath. The fear of being found out is
- 5:07almost always a lie. It sounds different for each of
- 5:11us, but it leads to the same place.
- 5:14If people really knew, they wouldn't understand.
- 5:19If people really knew, they'd judge me.
- 5:23If people really knew, they'd walk away.
- 5:27If people really knew, I would lose everything.
- 5:31And for some people, the most painful version of that lie
- 5:35sounds like this. If God really knew, he would be
- 5:40disappointed. That lie keeps people silent for
- 5:46years. It keeps them praying safe
- 5:49prayers. It keeps them sharing surface
- 5:52level struggles. It keeps them believing the
- 5:56transformation is for everyone else but them.
- 6:00It convinces them that if they could just clean themselves up a
- 6:03little bit more than maybe, just maybe, they'd be worthy of
- 6:08healing. See.
- 6:10But Scripture tells us a different story.
- 6:14Proverbs says that whoever conceals their sin does not
- 6:18prosper, but the one who confesses and renounces it finds
- 6:23mercy. Notice where the verse ends.
- 6:28Not with punishment, not with rejection, but with mercy.
- 6:35Fear tells us that exposure leads to destruction, but when
- 6:40it in reality, concealment is what ends up keeping us stuck.
- 6:46Jesus talks about this in John 3 when he says that people avoid
- 6:51the light not because the light is bad, but because they're
- 6:55afraid of what it will reveal. Light doesn't create the
- 6:59problem. Light reveals what's already
- 7:03there, and the enemy is incredibly effective at
- 7:07convincing us that darkness is safer.
- 7:13But darkness doesn't protect wounds, it infects them.
- 7:19What stays hidden doesn't heal, it hardens.
- 7:25Light feels terrifying at first, trust me, I know.
- 7:32But it is the only environment where restoration happens.
- 7:37There is a season in my life where I was doing all the right
- 7:40things on the outside. I was serving in church, I was
- 7:44leading, I was helping others, I was showing up consistently.
- 7:51But internally there were parts of me that stayed hidden.
- 7:54Not because I didn't love God, not because I didn't want to
- 7:58grow, but because I believed that I needed to fix myself
- 8:02before I let anyone else see the mess.
- 8:06So certain struggles stayed private, certain fears stayed
- 8:10unspoken, certain battles stayed internal.
- 8:15And I told myself I was being responsible, but what I was
- 8:19really doing was suffocating my own soul.
- 8:24I wasn't letting the light in, I was keeping the things in the
- 8:27darkness. You cannot heal what you refuse
- 8:33to reveal. Let me say that again.
- 8:37You cannot heal what you choose to keep hidden and you refuse to
- 8:46reveal. Hiding doesn't actually make you
- 8:52safe, it makes you lonely. When no one knows the real you,
- 8:57you slowly start believing that the real you is unlovable, and
- 9:02that belief shapes everything. Hiding doesn't just affect your
- 9:08relationships with people, it affects your relationship with
- 9:12God too. You stop praying honestly.
- 9:17You stop bringing your full self to Him.
- 9:20You start editing your prayers the same way that you edit your
- 9:24conversations with others. But God never asked for a
- 9:28curated version of you. He asked for you.
- 9:34Scripture says that the Lord is close to the broken hearted.
- 9:38Not the polished, not the impressive, the broken hearted.
- 9:44God is not intimidated by what you're hiding.
- 9:48He's not surprised by it. Grace doesn't activate through
- 9:53pretending. Grace activates through honesty.
- 9:59You're hiding things that he already knows.
- 10:03So be honest with him and receive his grace.
- 10:10The journey from hiding to helping doesn't begin with
- 10:13telling everyone everything. It begins with one step, one
- 10:19honest prayer, one honest sentence, one moment where you
- 10:22stop pretending. Somewhere you start being able
- 10:28to say that I'm not OK. I'm tired of hiding.
- 10:32I need help. Those words, they're terrifying
- 10:37to say. I know I've been there, but
- 10:42those words are so powerful because the moment that you say
- 10:47them, you stop fighting alone. So I want you to take a moment
- 10:53right now and I want you to ask yourself, and I want you to be
- 10:58gentle but also honest with yourself and ask, where am I
- 11:04hiding? What part of my life do I work
- 11:09the hardest to keep unseen? What fear is keeping me silent,
- 11:18and what by God want to heal if I stopped hiding it?
- 11:25You don't have to answer out loud.
- 11:27I can't hear you, obviously, but it's important that you're
- 11:32honest with yourself, because honesty with yourself is the
- 11:36very first step towards freedom. As we close out today, here's
- 11:45your invitation for the week ahead.
- 11:48Name the hiding. Not publicly, not dramatically,
- 11:54just between you and God, and maybe, just maybe, one safe
- 11:59person. You don't have to solve anything
- 12:02yet. You don't have to explain
- 12:04everything yet. Just think about those questions
- 12:09and when you come up with an answer, be honest with yourself,
- 12:13be honest with God, and maybe share that answer with one other
- 12:18person. Just stop pretending because
- 12:26hiding is heavy and you were never meant to carry the weight
- 12:31forever. Next week we're going to talk
- 12:35about what? Next week, we're going to talk
- 12:38about what often keeps us hidden even after we want to change the
- 12:44prison of perfection. We'll explore how image
- 12:49management limits the work that God wants us to do, and why your
- 12:54weakness might actually be the doorway to a deeper freedom.
- 13:00Until then, remember this, You are not disqualified by what you
- 13:06hide, but you are delayed by it, and the freedom begins the
- 13:12moment that you stop pretending and you choose to live unmasked.
- 13:18God bless you.
