Latest / Sri Aurobindo Studies / How to Deal With the Feeling of Unfitness for Spiritual Progress When It Arises in the Sadhana
Transcript
- 0:00It is perhaps a virtually universal experience.
- 0:05An individual takes up a spiritual practice and for a
- 0:09time, particularly when Satwa is in the forefront, he has unique
- 0:14insights, experiences and a sense of progress.
- 0:19At some point, however, these experiences tend to recede and
- 0:23the individual is left to address the need for change in
- 0:26his physical, vital and mental being.
- 0:30At that point, things become more difficult, visible progress
- 0:34is sometimes lacking, and discouragement can set in.
- 0:40Milarepa, the renowned Yogi from Tibet, got to the point of
- 0:44despair, even to the extreme of considering suicide as he felt
- 0:50like he was unfit for the yogic practices he sought, that he had
- 0:54accumulated tremendous burdens of sin and he was not succeeding
- 0:59in making progress in his path towards liberation.
- 1:04While not everyone comes to the point of suicidal thoughts, it
- 1:08is clearly a well known experience to go through a dark
- 1:11night of the soul along the way. The question then arises as to
- 1:16the cause and the solution of this mood.
- 1:20First, one must be able to separate oneself from the
- 1:24external being, that is, having these thoughts and feelings.
- 1:28Once the standpoint of the witness of the nature has been
- 1:31established, seeing and dealing with these changes of mood and
- 1:36their consequences becomes much simpler.
- 1:40The vital nature actually gets a kind of perverse satisfaction
- 1:44from raising up these feelings, as it draws attention and can
- 1:48actually be a form of vanity which the ego personality
- 1:52accepts and flaunts. It is then a seeking for
- 1:56attention and a form of drawing energy from others to
- 2:00commiserate and provide positive support.
- 2:05The next step is to align oneself with the part of the
- 2:07being that has the aspiration for the divine and the spiritual
- 2:11growth. This is the psychic being and
- 2:15once one is established firmly in this connection, the changing
- 2:19moods and feelings associated with the modifications of the
- 2:22three gunas become much less bothersome.
- 2:26This allows the Sodic to experience peace and hold a
- 2:30smiling attitude towards all the circumstances and vicissitudes
- 2:35of life, even while undergoing challenges, facing obstacles and
- 2:41dealing with these dark periods that come along with any attempt
- 2:45to address and effectuate changes in human nature.
- 2:50Sri Orobindo notes quote. Why do you indulge in these
- 2:55exaggerated feelings of remorse and despair?
- 2:59When these things come up from the subconscious, they do not
- 3:03help and make it more, not less, difficult to eliminate what
- 3:07comes. Such returns of an old nature
- 3:11that is long expelled from the conscious parts of the being
- 3:15always happen in Sadhna. It does not at all mean that the
- 3:19nature is unchangeable. Try to recover the inner
- 3:22quietude. Draw back from these movements
- 3:26and look at them calmly, reducing them to their true
- 3:30proportions. Your true nature is that in
- 3:33which you have peace and ananda and love of the Divine.
- 3:37This other is only a fringe of the outer personality, which in
- 3:42spite of these returns, is destined to drop away as the
- 3:46true Being extends and increases.
- 3:50There's no reason to be so much cut down or despair of your
- 3:54progress. Evidently you have had a surging
- 3:57up of the old movements, but that can always happen so long
- 4:01as there is not an entire change of the old nature, both in the
- 4:06consciousness and subconscious parts.
- 4:09The one thing to do is to quiet yourself and get back into the
- 4:14true consciousness and poise. End Quote Reference Sri Orobindo
