- 0:11Hello friends, it's Sean here. It's Tuesday, it's the 14th of
- 0:16April and how good is it to have your company as you have
- 0:20decided? Now is the moment in my day
- 0:22where I'm going to put down everything and come before my
- 0:26God and hear His word to me. And today it is circumcision,
- 0:32tastic word that is coming your way.
- 0:35This is the greatest mass circumcision event in the Bible,
- 0:39I reckon. And as we listen to this, we
- 0:41think, my goodness, this sounds a bit archaic, but we need to
- 0:44pause for a moment and think. We live under a new covenant
- 0:47today, a covenant that was set up when Jesus did what he did
- 0:51for us. And so we do outward things to
- 0:54celebrate our covenant with God, and we follow the instructions
- 0:57that we were given through things like baptism and things
- 1:00like participating in communion. But back then they were under a
- 1:04different covenant and their covenant said to be part of
- 1:07God's people. This is one of the outward signs
- 1:10that you do, which is circumcision.
- 1:12So as we read this, and it sounds terribly archaic and
- 1:16quite a foreign concept, this is a very familiar concept really
- 1:21about a people choosing to show that they are God's people.
- 1:26So let us dive in with that lens and read this together, shall
- 1:30we? Joshua chapter 5 When all the
- 1:43Amorite kings West of the Jordan and all the Canaanite kings who
- 1:47lived along the Mediterranean coast heard how the Lord had
- 1:50dried up the Jordan River so the people of Israel could cross,
- 1:55they lost heart and were paralysed with fear because of
- 1:58them. At that time the Lord told
- 2:02Joshua, make Flint knives and circumcise this second
- 2:06generation of Israelites. So Joshua made Flint knives and
- 2:11circumcised the entire male population of Israel at Gibiath
- 2:16Haraloth. Joshua had to circumcise them
- 2:20because all the men who were old enough to fight in the battle
- 2:23when they left Egypt had died in the wilderness.
- 2:26Those who left Egypt had all been circumcised, but none of
- 2:30those born after the Exodus, during the years and the
- 2:33wilderness had been circumcised. The Israelites had travelled in
- 2:37the wilderness for 40 years, until all the men who were old
- 2:40enough to fight in battle when they're left Egypt had died, for
- 2:44they had disobeyed the Lord, and the Lord vowed He would not let
- 2:49them enter the land. He had sworn to give us a land
- 2:52flowing with milk and honey. So Joshua was circumcised.
- 2:56Their sons, those who had grown up to take their father's
- 3:00places, for they had not been circumcised on the way to the
- 3:04promised land. After all the males had been
- 3:07circumcised, they rested in the camp until they were healed.
- 3:11Then the Lord said to Joshua, Today I have rolled away the
- 3:15shame of your slavery in Egypt. So that place has been called
- 3:20Gilgal to this day. While the Israelites were camped
- 3:24at Gilgal on the plains of Jericho, they celebrated
- 3:27Passover on the evening of the 14th day of the first month.
- 3:32The very next day they began to eat unleavened bread and roasted
- 3:36grain harvested from the land. No manner appeared on the day
- 3:40they first ate from the crops of the land, and it was never seen
- 3:45again. So from that time on the
- 3:48Israelite ate from the crops of Canaan.
- 3:53When Joshua was near the town of Jericho, he looked up and saw a
- 3:57man standing in front of him with a sword in hand.
- 4:00Joshua went up to him and demanded, Are you friend or foe?
- 4:05Neither. 1 He replied, I am the commander of the Lord's army.
- 4:11At this Joshua fell with his face to the ground in reverence.
- 4:15I am at your command, Joshua said.
- 4:18What do you want your servant to do?
- 4:21The commander of the Lord's army replied, Take off your sandals,
- 4:25for the place where you are standing is holy.
- 4:29And Joshua did as he was told. Father, thank you that you are a
- 4:43God who engages with your people.
- 4:46You don't sit in a lofty throne far from us, ruling us from a
- 4:52civil distance. No, you'd get down in the muck
- 4:55with us, and you walk beside us. Yes, you rule eternally, but you
- 5:01live here amongst us as well. Thank you and thank you that we
- 5:06see evidence of this in the covenants that you make with
- 5:09your people, in these agreements, these contracts that
- 5:13you make, so that we know exactly what you ask of us and
- 5:17exactly what you promised to us. And thank you that you have
- 5:23given us this incredible covenant of life in Jesus where
- 5:28we believe and are baptised, and then you strengthen and hold us
- 5:33in this incredible deal of forgiveness and love that we
- 5:38know we have through Jesus. Until finally, after we breathe
- 5:42our last, we come into your presence.
- 5:46Your perfect presence that we can now enter because the blood
- 5:50of Jesus covers over us and transforms us, making us as holy
- 5:57as he is. Oh, we love you and we're so
- 6:01grateful for everything you have done for us and your incredible
- 6:05rich love for us. And we pray all of this in his
- 6:09saving name. Amen.
