- 0:00Hi everyone, welcome to Mini Scroll, the daily Internet
- 0:04culture podcast bringing you the biggest stories from social
- 0:07media, the creator economy, and the digital space.
- 0:11Every Monday through Thursday and sometimes Fridays.
- 0:14I'm your host, Lauren Meisner, the founder of the youth digital
- 0:17media brand Centennial World. Welcome back to Mini Scroll,
- 0:22everyone. First of all, I'm so sorry that
- 0:24there was no episode on Friday that was not planned.
- 0:27But if you guys saw my community tab announced announcement or
- 0:30follow me on Instagram, saw my stories, and you would know that
- 0:33the office actually lost power on Friday because it was 40° in
- 0:37Sydney. So I was fully at the office,
- 0:40like prepping mini. And then the power went fully
- 0:43out. Like our entire building went
- 0:44out and it just never came back on.
- 0:46It was kind of mayhem. Like people were doing their
- 0:49Zoom meetings in the middle of the office because they needed
- 0:51to have obviously a room where they could have like windows and
- 0:54lighting. So there were just people doing
- 0:56like meetings everywhere. There were people playing ping
- 0:58pong, people playing basketball, basketball who like couldn't do
- 1:01their work but weren't leaving yet waiting to see if it was
- 1:03coming on. It was like total chaos.
- 1:07So I'm very sorry that was unintentional.
- 1:09But I'm making it up to you guys today because I have 6 stories
- 1:12instead of our usual 3 and it's my birthday today.
- 1:15My present to all of you on my birthday is a six story mini
- 1:18scroll. OK, I also wanted to remind you
- 1:20guys that this is actually the last week of Minnie before the
- 1:24break. Before the break, I said
- 1:26something along these lines last year and people were like, Oh my
- 1:29God, I thought she was going to say like ever.
- 1:31No, before the break, this is the last week of Minnie.
- 1:33So we will have a chatty episode like deep dive esque episode
- 1:39with Annabelle this Friday and then we're also doing another
- 1:42one of those together for next Friday.
- 1:44So like technically there will be an episode next week, but it
- 1:47will be on Friday. It will be Annabelle and I like
- 1:49wrapping up the year together, but this is the last week of
- 1:52Minnie because my whole family, so my brother and my parents are
- 1:55coming to Australia, to Sydney to spend Christmas all together
- 1:59with me. And they land in two days on
- 2:01Wednesday. So yeah, I thought we would wrap
- 2:04up a little bit early and then we will come back on January
- 2:075th. Usually we take like one extra
- 2:09week off in January and wrap up closer to Christmas.
- 2:11So I've just kind of moved it like into the middle of December
- 2:14instead so that I can have more time, you know, off while my
- 2:17family is here. But but there will still be some
- 2:20mini episodes going up over our break on Patreon.
- 2:24So if you guys are really like gurning for mini scroll, you're
- 2:27really missing us. You can sign up for Patreon even
- 2:29if it's just for the month. I totally get it.
- 2:31And you guys will get a couple of mini scroll episodes.
- 2:34I'm not sure, Minimum 2, possibly 3.
- 2:37I'm thinking probably 3, but I'm going to say minimum 2.
- 2:40All right, let's get into the stories for today.
- 2:43So the first story that I have for you guys is that Veruca Salt
- 2:47has announced she is divorcing her new husband just weeks after
- 2:51they got married. So Veruca is an Australian
- 2:53influencer. She's actually been an
- 2:55influencer for a really long time.
- 2:56And she sparked concern back in October after she announced that
- 2:59she had gotten married in this like, chaotic, whirlwind Vegas
- 3:04wedding to a man she had only met two weeks prior.
- 3:07Not like a dating two weeks prior.
- 3:09They'd only met for two weeks. They'd only known each other for
- 3:13two weeks, and they got married. At the time, Veruca joked on
- 3:16social media that they were both love bombers who decided to get
- 3:19married. And understandably, her
- 3:21followers were very concerned with how fast everything was
- 3:24going. But now over the weekend, Veruca
- 3:26revealed that she is divorcing this man after she alleged that
- 3:30he has mistreated her. She wrote on Instagram stories.
- 3:33Hi guys, I can't say too much right now but I just want to
- 3:35apologize for uplifting a man that is a compulsive liar and a
- 3:38scammer. I will be leaving him and
- 3:41leaving LA to return to my beautiful home in Australia.
- 3:44If you purchased anything through his website, please DM
- 3:48me so I can give that money back to you.
- 3:50Again, I'm very sorry about this.
- 3:51I fell for his lies and then she continued.
- 3:55I told you guys Veruca Salt lore never ends.
- 3:58I really hope this doesn't get messy with back and forth
- 4:00posting about each other and I want to make it very clear that
- 4:02there will be no I married a man I didn't know part 47 unless he
- 4:06is posting about me first. The things that have happened
- 4:09over the past 2 1/2 months have been a whirlwind and have
- 4:12definitely changed me in ways I didn't know possible.
- 4:15I'm a stick to being an old grandma on my mountain with all
- 4:18my kitties. It's a much more peaceful life.
- 4:20I hope you can forgive me for being a stupid idiot as I have
- 4:23been many times in the past. Also to my husband, please don't
- 4:27post anything negative about me because once I open my mouth
- 4:29about what you said about my son, it'll be over.
- 4:32And we both know that's just the tip of the iceberg.
- 4:35So her son that she's referring to, his name was Cash and he
- 4:39very sadly passed away at around, I believe it was six
- 4:41weeks a couple of years ago. And she documented a lot of that
- 4:46on social media. Now, Veruca has also made a few
- 4:49TikTok videos addressing this. If you haven't heard, my
- 4:52beautiful husband and I are divorcing.
- 4:55Annulling. I don't know.
- 4:56I'm going to iron out the details.
- 4:57Not 100% sure how to do it. I'm currently in an Airbnb in LA
- 5:00and I don't know where he is. It seems that when he packed his
- 5:04suitcase and left, thank God he left me there so I had time to
- 5:07organize my things. But it seems that when he did
- 5:10that, my camera is mysteriously gone and my dunks are serious
- 5:14mysteriously gone. And I did have some stuff in his
- 5:16car and also he's been wearing my jacket for like 2 months and
- 5:20I would like that back. And when I silly me, when I was
- 5:24packing my things, I accidentally took some of his
- 5:26stuff, his projector, his sublimation printer, a bigger
- 5:29spider man poster, his passport, his pocket knife.
- 5:32It seems I accidentally packed those things also.
- 5:34I just want to say that I also felt a lot of shame and public
- 5:38pressure to stay and make it work just because, you know,
- 5:43it's fucking embarrassing. Like to be married and divorced
- 5:47in five fucking minutes. OK, so did we think that this
- 5:49marriage was gonna last forever? No, probably not.
- 5:54But did we also think that this would be like a month long
- 5:58marriage? I think also no.
- 6:02All right, the next story that I have, Oh my God.
- 6:05I was itching, itching to talk about this over the weekend.
- 6:09Jaclyn Hill is under fire after posting a video complaining that
- 6:13TikTok has put her in what she thinks is view jail.
- 6:17So on Friday OG beauty YouTube, Jaclyn Hill posted a TikTok
- 6:20saying she felt like the app was punishing her because she
- 6:23doesn't post consistently enough.
- 6:25She said she has over 1,000,000 followers but she gets like
- 6:2830,000 views and she's sad because she wants her followers
- 6:31like the girlies she said to see her content.
- 6:34I feel like we are in such a weird place on social media as
- 6:39content creators where I am like fighting.
- 6:43I feel like I am like trying to run through mud to connect with
- 6:46my my followers at this point. I feel like there are so many
- 6:51bots and I feel like these apps are now controlling who views my
- 6:55videos. And I feel like I get punished
- 6:57and penalized for not showing up and creating all the time.
- 7:03And it's like I'm put in like this TikTok jail where my views
- 7:06are complete shit. No one is seeing.
- 7:09Like it's one thing of my engagement is shit.
- 7:11Meaning like maybe my views are high, but my comments are low
- 7:15and the likes are low. It's like, OK, so my audience
- 7:18wasn't feeling the vibes of this video.
- 7:19That's fine. But I'm talking like when you
- 7:21have a million followers, but your videos are only getting
- 7:2430,000 views. This is just not the way it used
- 7:27to be. Like when I started, it was so
- 7:29organic. Like you subscribe to the people
- 7:30that you liked, you open up those apps or you got a
- 7:33notification on your phone saying so and so just posted a
- 7:35video and you go, you engage with it and like it was that
- 7:38simple. I can't even describe how
- 7:42immediate and powerful the reaction to this video was.
- 7:47So initially people were just in the comments section of this
- 7:49video saying, like, I see your content and quite frankly, I
- 7:53often scroll on because it's unrelatable when the vast
- 7:56majority of people are trying to survive.
- 7:58And then we have influencers like Jaclyn Hill, where it feels
- 8:00like their entire career is about promoting consumerism and
- 8:04showing off their excess. And Jacqueline was in the
- 8:07comments section of this video, basically doubling down.
- 8:10She first responded to people saying that they were
- 8:12misunderstanding her point, that she wasn't referring to content
- 8:15that she posts, but it's more about like the platforms
- 8:17themselves. And then she really dug herself
- 8:21a hole when she responded like this.
- 8:22So somebody named Hannah wrote. Personally, I feel like you guys
- 8:26live in a dystopia. I am wondering how I'm going to
- 8:28financially recover from trying to give my kids a Christmas.
- 8:31Meanwhile, you guys are moving to LA and buying handbags that
- 8:34are more than my mortgage. So I scroll past it now.
- 8:38Jacqueline responded to this saying, quote, moving to LA and
- 8:42buying handbags proves you see what you want to because I also
- 8:46do giveaways all the time, link extremely affordable items,
- 8:50dupes, et cetera on a daily basis.
- 8:53Okay, people lost their minds over this comment
- 8:56understandably. OK first of all I want to say
- 8:59doing a giveaway is not the same as doing charity work or giving
- 9:04back because there is always something in return that you are
- 9:07getting for doing the giveaway. So you are giving away, first of
- 9:09all, usually free shit that you have been sent.
- 9:12But regardless, even if you paid for that out of your own pocket,
- 9:16the way that giveaways work typically and the way that
- 9:18Jaclyn Hill, I have seen her do giveaways in the past is you
- 9:22have to do like a follow train in order to get enrolled into
- 9:26the giveaway. She's not just doing a giveaway
- 9:29from the goodness of her heart. It is helping her boost
- 9:31engagement. It's helping her gain followers
- 9:33and all of that puts money in her pocket.
- 9:35And then saying that she links extremely affordable items in
- 9:38dupes is giving. Hey, I let the poors know about
- 9:42cheap shit that they can buy that will end up in landfill.
- 9:46Like what else do you want from me?
- 9:48I'm also giving all of my poor followers options to use my
- 9:53trackable links where I get a Commission from them.
- 9:56What else do you want from me? Then she made another video
- 9:59following up saying like look I'm open to this feedback I'm
- 10:02listening. However, at this point, the
- 10:04damage was done and there are now hundreds, if not even like
- 10:07thousands of commentary videos from her old followers, from
- 10:11people that are really engaged in this talking about why they
- 10:13don't watch her anymore. Most of the videos are saying
- 10:16the same thing, basically the same thing as the comments.
- 10:18We're saying that watching influencers flaunt their wealth
- 10:21is not relatable, and it's inevitable that we will kind of
- 10:23grow out of these people when they become really wealthy
- 10:26because they become out of touch.
- 10:29People are clipping Jacqueline's content as well, where she's
- 10:31showing her collection of like 100 Stanley Cups, cleaning out
- 10:35her closet. That's like filled with
- 10:37designer, you know, all that kind of stuff.
- 10:39Now, I agree with this feedback. You know, in general, like I
- 10:43agree with it to an extent. I would say, however,
- 10:46aspirational wealthy influencers are still a very successful
- 10:50niche. When it comes to Jacqueline Hill
- 10:53specifically, I actually think it's too reductive to say that
- 10:56people don't watch her content anymore because we don't relate
- 10:59to it because there are so many incredibly successful creators
- 11:02who none of us can relate to, but they're still incredibly
- 11:05engaging and they still have a loyal following and a loyal
- 11:08audience. With Jacqueline, I think it's a
- 11:10combination of things. Her content has not evolved with
- 11:14the times. Like she doesn't really do
- 11:15makeup content anymore, which I think is fine.
- 11:17I think the era, I mean, we all know that the era of makeup
- 11:21tutorials and like peak beauty, you know, YouTube and TikTok and
- 11:25all of that is definitely over. And I understand why OG beauty
- 11:28Youtubers as they've aged up, they've been in this career for
- 11:31so long. Like why would you want to keep
- 11:32doing the same thing over and over?
- 11:34I understand a lot of them are not that invested in makeup
- 11:36anymore. Like I get that.
- 11:38So I think that's fine, but she didn't make any type of
- 11:40meaningful pivot into another genre like her content
- 11:44unfortunately. This is going to sound really
- 11:46harsh, but it is incredibly boring.
- 11:48Her content for the past several years, with the exception of her
- 11:51vlogs where she was, you know, showing herself, trying to get
- 11:53healthy and sober, her content has coasted off of her just
- 11:57owning a lot of stuff. Jaclyn Hill's brand is
- 12:01consumerism, and I think that's what the biggest difference is
- 12:05between Jacqueline and some of these other aspirational wealthy
- 12:09influencers who, like I said, are still very relevant and get
- 12:13much better engagement because there are a ton of creators who
- 12:16started out the same way as Jacqueline.
- 12:18Her argument is always I had nothing when I started.
- 12:20I was on food stamps, of course, and we believe that.
- 12:22We know that. However, there are tons of
- 12:25creators who were in similar positions as her and now they
- 12:29are wealthy. They have a totally different
- 12:31lifestyle, but they've still been able to like maintain that
- 12:33element of like relatability and having that audience engagement.
- 12:37And that's because they're making interesting content.
- 12:41They are making interesting content and they have a brand, a
- 12:45personal brand outside of just owning stuff.
- 12:49We have no idea what Jaclyn Hill stands for.
- 12:52We have no idea if Jaclyn Hill would vote against our rights.
- 12:56We have no idea if Jaclyn Hill does anything meaningful with
- 13:00the money that we have helped her make.
- 13:03And then all of this coupled with her various business
- 13:06scandals where she has been caught lying time and time again
- 13:09to save her reputation and her bank account, and then the fact
- 13:12that her audience is aging up with her.
- 13:14So we're becoming increasingly more politically, socially,
- 13:18economically aware of what's going on.
- 13:21The stakes feel higher for us now.
- 13:22A lot of us are starting to have kids, like in this demographic
- 13:25that initially, like, watched Jaclyn Hill, like, I am very
- 13:27much like that demographic. Like, we have evolved and grown
- 13:31as people. And it feels like Jacqueline has
- 13:33remained stagnant. And I'm sure she hasn't actually
- 13:36like she's been through so much over the past decade in her
- 13:39personal life. I'm sure as a person she has
- 13:42changed a lot, but she doesn't show us that online because her
- 13:45content hasn't evolved. She's stuck in that cycle that
- 13:49so many of us get into where you found success with like a
- 13:51particular style or niche or whatever.
- 13:54And then it's something that she's trying to constantly
- 13:57replicate and like redo all the time instead of just moving
- 14:01along with the times. And all of this is what makes
- 14:04her out of touch and unrelatable.
- 14:07It's not that she's wealthy and living in a mansion.
- 14:09Like I said, there's countless creators that have that very
- 14:11similar lifestyle, right? And audiences don't feel that
- 14:14same way about them. It's that her content isn't
- 14:17interesting. She hasn't evolved out of like
- 14:19the Jeffrey starification of the beauty YouTube days.
- 14:23She doesn't seem to stand for anything outside of herself.
- 14:27And she never was truly able to take accountability for her
- 14:32scandals, which at the end of the day, harmed her followers
- 14:35and their bank accounts. And that is why Jaclyn Hill is
- 14:39out of touch and people do not want to consume her content.
- 14:43That's my piece. I've said my piece.
- 14:45Speaking of wealthy, aspirational influencers who can
- 14:48still maintain an engaged audience, Alex Earl has
- 14:52reportedly split from her NFL boyfriend, Braxton Berrios.
- 14:56So after months of speculation, sources are confirming to all
- 15:00the major entertainment news publications that Alex and
- 15:03Braxton have broken up. The two were dating for two
- 15:06years, and there have been rumors on and off about their
- 15:08relationship for that whole time, but speculation that they
- 15:12broke up really picked up. When she was doing Dancing With
- 15:14the Stars, fans expected him to show more public support for
- 15:17her, first of all, and second of all, he didn't really seem to.
- 15:20I don't think he went to any of her performances, maybe like
- 15:24one, maybe none. I'm not really sure.
- 15:26I don't watch Dancing with the Stars, but I know that a lot of
- 15:28people were like he was not at nearly enough of those
- 15:31performances. That being said, he is also a
- 15:33football player and it is I guess football season in the US.
- 15:37So of course, you know, that is like, I think the major reason
- 15:40why he was not at these performances is he has a job and
- 15:42he couldn't go. However, now Dancing With the
- 15:45Stars has rapped, so they've been unable to avoid the
- 15:48elephant in the room or the elephant on their socials, I
- 15:51suppose, which is that it appears like even after Dancing
- 15:54with the Stars wrapped, Alex and Braxton did not see each other.
- 15:58There was no evidence on social media at least, that they saw
- 16:01each other. And I know people can say all
- 16:03people can do things behind the scenes.
- 16:04They can do things offline. Well, honestly, like not Alex
- 16:06Earl. Her whole job is vlogging her
- 16:09entire life, every single day. I do believe if she was with
- 16:12Braxton and she saw him for the first time after this huge
- 16:16moment in her career, she would have vlogged at least something
- 16:19anyway. So people were like, yeah, they
- 16:21must be broken up. And now sources are telling Us
- 16:23Weekly, People magazine, all those titles that they did break
- 16:26up. Apparently they broke up
- 16:28overdoing long distance and the relationship basically ran its
- 16:31course. That's what people are saying,
- 16:32or that's what these sources are saying.
- 16:34Honestly, Alex's career is going strength to strength.
- 16:37She is a huge star. She's going to be a huge star
- 16:42and I think it's just not the time for her to be like settled
- 16:45down. I think at the end of the day,
- 16:46she outgrew him. He was her boyfriend in her
- 16:48early 20s and she's entering into this totally new phase of
- 16:52her life. And that is a phase that is so
- 16:54valid. Myself and so many of my friends
- 16:57of my girlfriends, when we left uni, like all of us broke up
- 17:01with our university boyfriend. It's so common because it's a
- 17:04totally different phase of life, right?
- 17:07When you get to like 2324 and you're like, OK, now I'm like to
- 17:12the adult world, who do I want to be?
- 17:14What do I want my life to look like?
- 17:16Who do I want to be with all that kind of stuff?
- 17:18It's a very transformative period.
- 17:19All right, the next story that I have for you guys is I am going
- 17:23to talk about the Pantone Color of the Year backlash.
- 17:27So Pantone have announced their color of the year and it's been
- 17:30met with a lot of backlash. As we know every year at the
- 17:33company since 1999, Crazy has chosen a color that they say
- 17:38represents the zeitgeist of the year.
- 17:41And this year, they picked a color called Cloud Dancer, which
- 17:45is a, quote, billowy white. Pantone says Cloud Dancer mixes
- 17:50well with others, isn't overstimulating, makes a
- 17:53minimalist statement and exudes quiet sophistication.
- 17:58I don't think we need any of these things.
- 18:00OK, well, maybe mixing well with others, we'll go with that.
- 18:03So Cloud Dancer as the color of the year has received a lot of
- 18:07criticism. First, Pantone is an American
- 18:10company. And after what has gone on in
- 18:15America this year with Trump, ICE, DEI and everything in
- 18:19between to choose a shade of white, it's giving.
- 18:25Sidney Sweeney has good genes. It's literally giving that and
- 18:29also sorry, that aside, it also feels so inaccurate, like we
- 18:34have been moving away from the minimalist beige influencer
- 18:38aesthetic. If you look at other forms of
- 18:39expression that have been influential this year, like
- 18:41music, fashion, makeup, it's all been recession maximalism.
- 18:47So choosing a shade of white as the color of the year also just
- 18:50feels incorrect. So in response to the backlash,
- 18:53Lori Pressman, who is the VP of Pantone, told the Washington
- 18:56Post that quote, skin tones did not factor into this at all.
- 19:01Which is literally the problem. How many times do we need to
- 19:06watch huge corporations mess up like this and claim ignorance?
- 19:11Like you need to be tapped into the cultural zeitgeist to
- 19:14properly reflect it back to us. It's not about the intention.
- 19:18If you're saying I, I believe you.
- 19:20I believe that you didn't sit in a boardroom.
- 19:22I think I believe this. I think I believe that you
- 19:25didn't sit in a boardroom and say, OK, what can we do to
- 19:29really promote white supremacy? What can we do that is going to
- 19:32feel racially charged? However, it's the lack of
- 19:35understanding of how this would be received.
- 19:38I feel like I have done this exact speech on this podcast so
- 19:40many fucking times this year. Is a lack of understanding about
- 19:44how we would receive this, how people would dissect this and
- 19:47discuss this online given the current social, political, socio
- 19:51economic landscape that we are in.
- 19:53And This is why I am such a huge advocate for brands hiring
- 19:58Internet culture experts like Internet culture journalists.
- 20:01Culture journalists need to have a place in every single
- 20:05marketing team, especially if you are a consumer brands.
- 20:09These are like the only people that are going to be able to
- 20:11save these consumer brands from having major faux pas like this,
- 20:16like these. VR crisis is like, this is a
- 20:19huge problem. This keeps fucking happening.
- 20:22And then the response is always the same.
- 20:24It's like I was just promoting genes.
- 20:27We didn't think about skin color at all in this.
- 20:29Like, that's not the point. It's the underlying bias that
- 20:32exists in all of us, OK, especially as white people.
- 20:35And then taking it a step further, it's the fact that you
- 20:38have had no understanding or concept or thought about like,
- 20:42how might this be received in what we are currently
- 20:45experiencing culturally? And the reality is like with
- 20:48platforms like TikTok, these faux pas, like they extend
- 20:52beyond just like industry news publications now, right?
- 20:56Like this is being talked about everywhere.
- 20:58Every single consumer now is aware of how this has landed.
- 21:04Whether they agree with the criticism or not is one thing.
- 21:08But the fact that we are aware of this discussion and now aware
- 21:11of how Pantone has responded, like that's not good.
- 21:15That's not good PR. I swear I keep thinking about
- 21:18this. The gap that I truly see in
- 21:22consumer marketing, especially from like where I am positioned
- 21:25is there needs to be a tool. Not like Chachi PT, OK, She is
- 21:30not the one. There needs to be a tool that
- 21:33marketers can like, filter their campaigns through.
- 21:36And it will tell marketers based on the current climate of the
- 21:40online space, like the online zeitgeist, the conversations
- 21:43that we are actively having in the commentary space, like how
- 21:47that campaign and those decisions that they're making to
- 21:50put out publicly to consumers will land.
- 21:52There needs to be a tool. If somebody wants to help me
- 21:54build that tool, please let me know, e-mail me.
- 21:57OK? The next story that I have for
- 21:59you guys is that Netflix is to acquire Warner Brothers for 82.7
- 22:06USD billion billion USDUSD billion USD $82.7 billion
- 22:16American dollars. OK, so Netflix has confirmed it
- 22:19will acquire Warner Brothers Discovery film and television
- 22:22Studios, HBO and HBO Max Warner Brothers is basically splitting
- 22:27into two companies. So it's separating its cable
- 22:30division, like it's cable TV division from Warner Brothers
- 22:34Studios, HBO and HBO Mac, which is like the second-half is like
- 22:37what Netflix is acquiring. So Netflix acquisition is highly
- 22:41controversial and it has drawn a lot of criticism,
- 22:44unsurprisingly, the consolidation of, you know, a
- 22:47major network, two major networks like this will likely
- 22:51yield less choice for consumers and also less opportunity for
- 22:55the industry at large. And there are many concerns
- 22:58around how this will impact the industry given film television,
- 23:02like those industries really have not recovered post COVID
- 23:05and they are struggling a lot. And we are already so reliant on
- 23:08streamers, you know, as a population.
- 23:10And it gives Netflix so much power from the streamer side and
- 23:13also now the theatrical side. So this is directly from
- 23:16Variety. Quote.
- 23:17A consortium of top industry players have sent an open letter
- 23:21full of alarm to Congress describing a potential economic
- 23:25and institutional meltdown in Hollywood if Netflix succeeds in
- 23:28its efforts to acquire Warner Bros Discovery.
- 23:32The communication outlines 3 areas of great concern,
- 23:34including that Netflix could stand to quote destroy the
- 23:37theatrical film marketplace by escalating or eliminating the
- 23:40amount of Time Warner Brothers films would play in theaters
- 23:44before hitting a combined Netflix HBO Max streaming
- 23:47platform. Sources told Variety earlier on
- 23:50Thursday that Netflix current proposal for Warner Brothers
- 23:53would have a theatrical window as thin as two weeks of
- 23:57exclusivity before moving to streaming.
- 23:59The producers also argued that Netflix would quote effectively
- 24:03hold a noose around the theatrical marketplace with what
- 24:06they assert to be enough market influence to reduce the
- 24:09footprint of theatrical movies and force down subsequent
- 24:12licensing fees paid in post theatrical windows.
- 24:15Now I will say the deal still needs regulatory and shareholder
- 24:19approval. So it's not done yet, but like,
- 24:22I think it's done. It seems done.
- 24:23I imagine it will also come with a lot of redundancy.
- 24:25Is something very similar? I mean, definitely not, not to
- 24:28this scale, but something similar happened in the
- 24:30Australian media industry, like publishing.
- 24:32When I was working in IT, I mean, I'm still working in IT,
- 24:33but when I was working in mainstream media where two huge
- 24:37conglomerates essentially like merged and almost everyone that
- 24:41I knew was made redundant. OK.
- 24:43And the last story that I have for you guys is that a creator
- 24:45is going viral for confronting one of her trolls in real life
- 24:49and then posting this to TikTok. So creator Devil and You made
- 24:53has been going viral all weekend after she posted a vlog of
- 24:57herself tracking down one of her trolls at his job and
- 25:00confronting him, making him give her an apology.
- 25:04So this started because she apparently had posted some
- 25:07content about the Republicans winning an election in
- 25:10Tennessee, in District 7 of Tennessee.
- 25:13And then a man named Mike left a comment on her video that was
- 25:17apparently racist and quote life threatening according to
- 25:20comments from users who claim to have seen the original comment.
- 25:23So she said not today Mike and she documented herself driving 3
- 25:30hours to his place of work. So she like tracked him down,
- 25:33drove 3 hours to his place of work to confront him.
- 25:36Here is the clip. Hello, I'm looking for a mic.
- 25:41Does a mic work here? Yeah.
- 25:43Can I speak to him? Sure.
- 25:44What's? What's this?
- 25:46About are are you Mike? Yeah.
- 25:48Can I step aside? It's cold.
- 25:49Thank you. How you doing?
- 25:50How you doing? Nice.
- 25:51So a couple days ago, you left a comment under somebody.
- 25:57Yeah, under somebody's comment section.
- 25:59Do you remember that, by any chance?
- 26:02It was regarding Tennessee District 7.
- 26:06Yeah. Well, John, you don't know me.
- 26:08I don't know you, but I was that person that you commented under.
- 26:12Yeah. It's crazy, right?
- 26:13Crazy world. But I just wanted you to know,
- 26:17you see how easy I found you. It's not.
- 26:20It's not cool, right? Yeah.
- 26:22So I'm going to give you the opportunity and apologize or I'm
- 26:27going to show you a wife the ground that account I found.
- 26:30How do you feel about that? Right, right.
- 26:34It's crazy, crazy world out here.
- 26:36So I did make this apology in case, you know, you don't have
- 26:40to. I understand it's hard, but all
- 26:42you have to do is read this, my little apology, I wrote.
- 26:45I'm dead when she's like, do you see how easy it was for me to
- 26:48track you down? And I don't know if you guys
- 26:50could hear clearly. But she also threatened to tell
- 26:53his wife about his Grinder account.
- 26:55And then she got him to read off an apology that she wrote for
- 26:58him. So unfortunately she is
- 27:00apparently overwhelmed with the response so she has gone on
- 27:03private. But honestly, we need more of
- 27:06this energy. You should never be posting
- 27:09derogatory comments, life threatening or threatening
- 27:12comments in general online and expect to remain anonymous.
- 27:15Like that is a horrible precedent that somehow has been
- 27:18set online because it's like, oh, I'm just behind a keyboard.
- 27:21I can have, you know, a fake username.
- 27:22No one can find me. That is definitely not the case.
- 27:26And I like that this kind of moves the needle a little bit
- 27:30because, like, the vast majority of the Internet is on her side.
- 27:33People are like, yeah, valid, you know, like this is the
- 27:36consequences of your actions, Mike.
- 27:38And it moves the needle in terms of online harassment and what we
- 27:42will take and what we will accept.
- 27:44So now I feel like maybe people will think twice before
- 27:47commenting something hateful. Now, I don't know.
- 27:49Now, I do want to end this story by saying there are some rumors
- 27:53online that this is a skit. But for the purpose of our
- 27:57entertainment, let's just ignore that speculation and and enjoy
- 28:01this hilarious display of consequence culture.
- 28:03Anyways guys, that's it for mini scroll today.
