- 0:01Speaker 1: Welcome to the Wired to Hunt podcast, home of the
- 0:05Speaker 1: modern white tail hunter, and now your host, Mark Kenyon.
- 0:12Speaker 1: Welcome to the Wired to Hunt podcast. I'm your host,
- 0:15Speaker 1: Mark Kenyan, and today on the show, I'm joined by
- 0:18Speaker 1: Lee Ellis of Seek one to discuss exactly how he
- 0:22Speaker 1: handles some of the toughest deer hunting scenarios in the
- 0:24Speaker 1: white tail woods. All right, welcome to the Wired to
- 0:40Speaker 1: Hunt podcast, brought to you by First Light. Today we
- 0:44Speaker 1: are continuing are what would You Do series, wrapping it
- 0:48Speaker 1: up actually, and as you know if he's listened to
- 0:51Speaker 1: the three previous what we do here is we run
- 0:54Speaker 1: our guests through a bunch of different hypothetical hunting scenarios.
- 0:57Speaker 1: And this year I've I've taken a number of questions
- 1:01Speaker 1: and ask them to each one of our guests. So
- 1:04Speaker 1: you've heard a few of these over and over and
- 1:05Speaker 1: over again. And I did that on purpose because I
- 1:08Speaker 1: think it's very interesting and and and kind of enlightening
- 1:12Speaker 1: to see how each one of these very successful hunters
- 1:16Speaker 1: handles the same kind of situation and they each do
- 1:19Speaker 1: it in a different way that I think is kind
- 1:22Speaker 1: of encouraging, and I think it's a great reminder for
- 1:25Speaker 1: all of us that there's not just one way to
- 1:27Speaker 1: do this that just because so and so from Iowa
- 1:31Speaker 1: says you have to do it this way, that you
- 1:33Speaker 1: can't do it in a completely different way in Michigan
- 1:36Speaker 1: or Georgia or Mississippi or Pennsylvania, whatever it is. I
- 1:40Speaker 1: think we can learn something from all of these people
- 1:42Speaker 1: and then figure out what works in our neck of
- 1:45Speaker 1: the woods with our style. And today's guest is a
- 1:48Speaker 1: perfect example of this kind of person who's got a
- 1:51Speaker 1: very unique kind of niche, but which I think we
- 1:53Speaker 1: can learn from and apply to our places. So this
- 1:56Speaker 1: is Lee Ellis today. Lee Ellis is one of the
- 1:59Speaker 1: founders of seek one Productions, just a super entertaining, very
- 2:04Speaker 1: successful UH deer hunting YouTube channel, social media, full package
- 2:10Speaker 1: of media offerings, and they focus on urban deer hunting.
- 2:14Speaker 1: So the kind of thing that I did last year
- 2:15Speaker 1: with Taylor Chamberlain, you know, Lee is doing this to
- 2:19Speaker 1: you know, just an unbelievable degree with the quality of
- 2:22Speaker 1: deer him and his buddies are killing. And they've done
- 2:24Speaker 1: it in Georgia, They've done in Tennessee, they've done in Ohio,
- 2:27Speaker 1: all sorts of different places. They're spreading out and proving
- 2:29Speaker 1: that this style of hunting works all across the country.
- 2:33Speaker 1: So today we're getting that d i y perspective from
- 2:36Speaker 1: someone who knocks on doors, who gets permission to chase deer,
- 2:40Speaker 1: and kind of funky, different kinds of places, and it's
- 2:42Speaker 1: something you can do anywhere if you want to check
- 2:46Speaker 1: out and see a little bit of of background, I
- 2:49Speaker 1: suppose only in this style of hunting. I recommend you
- 2:52Speaker 1: listen to our first podcast with him, episode two thirty nine.
- 2:56Speaker 1: We kind of cover the basics and the foundation of
- 2:58Speaker 1: how Lee hunts, why he does this, the the basic
- 3:01Speaker 1: kind of stick. This is like their style of hunting.
- 3:04Speaker 1: But today we're gonna get into the specifics of unique
- 3:08Speaker 1: scenarios and situations and uh, you know, just like we
- 3:12Speaker 1: do on the Gauntlet, Lee's got some good ideas, some
- 3:15Speaker 1: interesting stories, and uh, I really enjoyed this one. So
- 3:19Speaker 1: I think it's a great way to wrap up our
- 3:21Speaker 1: August and then jump into the season. I mean, for
- 3:24Speaker 1: a lot of us, September means so I'm very very excited.
- 3:29Speaker 1: I want to give you guys one heads up some
- 3:31Speaker 1: house cleaning before we get into it. I've been telling
- 3:34Speaker 1: you guys about my new gear recommendations page on the
- 3:37Speaker 1: Meat Eater store. You've heard me say it before, I'll
- 3:40Speaker 1: say it again. You go to store dot the meat
- 3:44Speaker 1: eater dot com slash mark, and you're to see my
- 3:47Speaker 1: top recommendations as far as what we offer over on
- 3:51Speaker 1: the Mediator store, from First Life, from f HF, from
- 3:55Speaker 1: all the different brands and manufacturers that we now carry.
- 3:58Speaker 1: So that's that my little pitch for the day, pre
- 4:01Speaker 1: sweet deal for those of you in the market. I
- 4:03Speaker 1: hope you appreciate it. If you're not in the market, no, biggie,
- 4:06Speaker 1: ignore me. Stick around for a great chat with Lee.
- 4:09Speaker 1: You're gonna enjoy this one, and I appreciate you. Let's
- 4:12Speaker 1: get into it here with me now on the Wire
- 4:15Speaker 1: Dump podcast, and this is the first for me. I'm
- 4:16Speaker 1: recording while driving in a pickup truck and I'm not driving,
- 4:20Speaker 1: I'm sitting the passenger seat. But with me, we've got
- 4:23Speaker 1: Lee Ellis, Lee, welcome to the show Man. Thanks for
- 4:27Speaker 1: having me, glad to be here. We've got crazy schedules
- 4:30Speaker 1: to both of us, so we had to get creative
- 4:32Speaker 1: when how we could fit this in. So thank you
- 4:34Speaker 1: for making the time we've been dancing around. Uh for
- 4:38Speaker 1: a while, when I've had stuff going on, you've been free.
- 4:41Speaker 1: When you've been free, I've had stuff, or when you've
- 4:44Speaker 1: been busy, I've been free. Since Yeah, we've finally the
- 4:47Speaker 1: stars of a line in our schedule are free. So
- 4:50Speaker 1: and like like a three week window of August, this
- 4:53Speaker 1: is the only couple hour window I think we've had
- 4:55Speaker 1: that actually lines up. So we're making it work however
- 5:00Speaker 1: we can, so hopefully if folk can hear this all okay,
- 5:03Speaker 1: But as as you know, Lee, we're in the middle
- 5:07Speaker 1: of this kind of series where I'm going through this
- 5:09Speaker 1: this what would You Do? Gauntlet where I'm basically running
- 5:12Speaker 1: people through a bunch of these challenging, um tricky hunting
- 5:17Speaker 1: scenarios and then seeing how they would deal with them.
- 5:20Speaker 1: So I've got a bunch of these four you. There's
- 5:22Speaker 1: a couple of doozies in here. There's a couple that
- 5:24Speaker 1: might bring up bad memories. Uh, I'm just gonna see
- 5:28Speaker 1: if you can make it through to the end. So
- 5:30Speaker 1: are you Are you game for that challenge? Yeah, I'm
- 5:33Speaker 1: I'm totally game. I think that uh, there's gonna be
- 5:37Speaker 1: I think that's one of those things where it's kind
- 5:39Speaker 1: of like there's no right or wrong answer. I think
- 5:41Speaker 1: I think that, uh, people have different hunting styles, so
- 5:47Speaker 1: my answer may be different than you know, someone else's answer. Uh,
- 5:52Speaker 1: but I think that that's kind of like how your
- 5:54Speaker 1: approaches would would It's gonna play into kind of how
- 5:57Speaker 1: you would attack these scenario. You're gonna like, yeah, so true.
- 6:01Speaker 1: So give me as much of that color when once
- 6:04Speaker 1: I give you some of these some of these situations
- 6:07Speaker 1: feel free to you know, give me as much of
- 6:09Speaker 1: that context as far as how you're thinking about it,
- 6:11Speaker 1: why you would think about it that way, even like
- 6:14Speaker 1: things have happened to you in the past that have
- 6:16Speaker 1: now color the way you make these decisions. I think
- 6:18Speaker 1: that ends up being the most interesting stuff, you know. Yeah, sure,
- 6:24Speaker 1: so so let's just get into it. And this is
- 6:26Speaker 1: a situation that I'm gonna lay out here for you
- 6:29Speaker 1: that I know you've You've been in this situation in
- 6:31Speaker 1: the past. You've been in this scenario, and so imagine this.
- 6:35Speaker 1: Imagine you get word of a giant deer. Someone on
- 6:41Speaker 1: Instagram sends you a d M or something says, hey man,
- 6:45Speaker 1: there is an absolute monster buck in my city, in
- 6:48Speaker 1: my neighborhood. That's just next level. And I know you're
- 6:52Speaker 1: into this kind of thing. If you're interested, you should
- 6:54Speaker 1: come out check it out, see if you can get
- 6:57Speaker 1: this buck. But this is this is not near where
- 6:59Speaker 1: you live, so it's gonna require a drive, it's gonna
- 7:02Speaker 1: require some some detective work. You know, nothing more than
- 7:06Speaker 1: there's a big buck in this general area. That's all
- 7:08Speaker 1: you've got. You don't have any access, you don't have
- 7:10Speaker 1: any GPS coordinates, you don't have any hey, I know
- 7:12Speaker 1: he lives in this property, none of that stuff. Yeah,
- 7:16Speaker 1: the question is this number one? Would you follow up
- 7:20Speaker 1: on the lead like that, just like a random DM
- 7:22Speaker 1: and a picture from somebody? Would you chase that down?
- 7:25Speaker 1: And what would be your game plan for that question one? Yes,
- 7:29Speaker 1: that's question one? Would you follow it up at number two?
- 7:31Speaker 1: What's the game plan for getting in on that spot? Okay, Um,
- 7:38Speaker 1: you're throwing you're throwing me a fastball down the middle here.
- 7:42Speaker 1: This is uh, this is right my alley. That is Um.
- 7:48Speaker 1: It's honestly, it's kind of a double EDGs over in
- 7:50Speaker 1: a way because we have found I mean, the day
- 7:54Speaker 1: is just social media. Everyone's got cell phones and they
- 7:57Speaker 1: got really nice cameras. It's like pick just get spread
- 8:00Speaker 1: around so fast with social media these days that, uh,
- 8:06Speaker 1: you know, it's pretty common that a lot of leads
- 8:08Speaker 1: we find or stuff that maybe not that was sent
- 8:12Speaker 1: to us necessarily like directly to us, but we saw
- 8:15Speaker 1: posted on Facebook forums or some hunting forums or Instagram,
- 8:20Speaker 1: whatever it be. Uh, there's a lot of information out there,
- 8:24Speaker 1: and we do get sent a bunch of d m
- 8:27Speaker 1: s about you know, people sharing deer and things like that.
- 8:32Speaker 1: But it has also gone the opposite way for us,
- 8:36Speaker 1: where I've gotten a d M and someone's like, hey,
- 8:39Speaker 1: I saw a huge buck off of this road, like
- 8:42Speaker 1: he ran across the road whatever or in this field,
- 8:46Speaker 1: and you know you should definitely go pursue them. So
- 8:49Speaker 1: I go spend you know, weeks trying to get permission
- 8:52Speaker 1: there and running cameras just to get a picture of
- 8:55Speaker 1: the deer. And it's like, you know one twenty, which
- 8:58Speaker 1: is still a good deer, but you know, it's just
- 9:01Speaker 1: it's not what we were, you know, looking for kind
- 9:05Speaker 1: of thing. So like we've I honestly cannot tell you
- 9:09Speaker 1: how much time has been spent uh following up leads
- 9:14Speaker 1: that go to dead ends. I would say the matt
- 9:16Speaker 1: vast majority of them lead to dead ends. Um can't
- 9:20Speaker 1: get permission or the deer's not you know what he
- 9:23Speaker 1: thought he was. So whenever I do get a lead
- 9:28Speaker 1: a d M or see something on social media, obviously
- 9:31Speaker 1: like seeing a picture of the deer can confirm for
- 9:33Speaker 1: you right then and there, like hey, that's a huge deer.
- 9:37Speaker 1: But at the same time, I like, I'll give you
- 9:40Speaker 1: an example. Last year, there was a picture that went
- 9:43Speaker 1: around Atlanta of this deer that is two I mean
- 9:48Speaker 1: way over two hundred, but believable to be in Atlanta,
- 9:52Speaker 1: and was told you know where it was. I spent
- 9:56Speaker 1: weeks getting permission and running cameras trying to find this
- 10:01Speaker 1: dear last summer just to find out this guy had
- 10:06Speaker 1: posted it on a social media friends to say that
- 10:11Speaker 1: he saw this huge deer in Atlanta and he just
- 10:13Speaker 1: didn't want to own up to it. When I asked
- 10:15Speaker 1: him like, hey, is that legit, he didn't want to
- 10:17Speaker 1: own up to it and be like, no, man, I
- 10:19Speaker 1: posted it as a joke. He totally just like for
- 10:24Speaker 1: whatever reason, just didn't tell me the truth and was
- 10:26Speaker 1: like you know, yeah, yeah, yeah, Like I saw this,
- 10:28Speaker 1: you know huge deer blah blah blah, Like so I
- 10:31Speaker 1: spent so much time wasted during that so um, there
- 10:37Speaker 1: is a lot of that that happens, but it also
- 10:41Speaker 1: is what leads you into finding some of these, like
- 10:44Speaker 1: you know, crazy big deer. A current situation that you
- 10:47Speaker 1: and I were talking about four we hit recorders. I'm
- 10:49Speaker 1: chasing a deer in I'll be vague at the time,
- 10:55Speaker 1: being in a in a northern state that is like
- 11:00Speaker 1: I can't even describe how enormous he is, and I've
- 11:04Speaker 1: I've gotten my own trail camp pictures of him. I
- 11:08Speaker 1: plan on dedicating the vast majority of my season two
- 11:12Speaker 1: this year. Uh, he will definitely be the biggest year
- 11:15Speaker 1: I've ever hunted. And that all came from, you know,
- 11:20Speaker 1: a combination of seeing some stuff on Facebook and getting
- 11:23Speaker 1: a couple of d m sent to me like hey,
- 11:25Speaker 1: there's this rumor, dear, and I just basically I feel
- 11:29Speaker 1: like I haven't even answered your first question yet. Uh, well,
- 11:33Speaker 1: you said you'd go after it, so that's the big one. Yeah, absolutely, Yeah,
- 11:38Speaker 1: when you can confirm that the deer's legit, yeah, I
- 11:40Speaker 1: mean we're going after you know a lot of different dear.
- 11:43Speaker 1: H So there's this big northern deer that's that you
- 11:48Speaker 1: got wind of. Let's let's kind of play on this example,
- 11:50Speaker 1: I guess. So you get wind of it, you confirm
- 11:54Speaker 1: with a few people, like yeah, they they check this.
- 11:57Speaker 1: This this deer he's rumored around here. How do you
- 12:00Speaker 1: actually zero in? I mean, do you do you just
- 12:04Speaker 1: spend a weekend and like start casting a wide net.
- 12:07Speaker 1: Do you plan on multiple trips throughout the year, like
- 12:10Speaker 1: what's that actually look like to find an out of
- 12:12Speaker 1: state location like that and somehow zero in on a
- 12:16Speaker 1: deer like this that you just vaguely know exists in
- 12:18Speaker 1: the general region. So a lot of it is picture matching. Um,
- 12:24Speaker 1: there was a deer I killed in Atlanta that was
- 12:26Speaker 1: like the first real big deer as a deer we
- 12:27Speaker 1: called Charlie's the first video we ever did. The reason
- 12:30Speaker 1: I found that dear is because there was a picture
- 12:33Speaker 1: of him standing in a parking lot. Uh and I
- 12:38Speaker 1: was able to match the apartment complex, apartment and parking
- 12:42Speaker 1: lot that he was in. So once I matched the picture,
- 12:44Speaker 1: I knew right in and there boom, all right, it's
- 12:46Speaker 1: a legit. So whenever we can, if you can match
- 12:51Speaker 1: a picture, then you know, boom, all right, this is real,
- 12:54Speaker 1: it's legit. This is where this deer was seen. A
- 12:58Speaker 1: lot of it. A lot of that is boots on
- 12:59Speaker 1: the g on so um. This particular northern deer was
- 13:05Speaker 1: seeing him on Facebook, different forums. You're seeing all kinds
- 13:10Speaker 1: of road names up there. And I drove up there
- 13:15Speaker 1: and just started door knocking. And you know, after you
- 13:18Speaker 1: talked to fifties, sixties, seventy different people, you start to
- 13:23Speaker 1: you know, every door knock. I'm trying to get information.
- 13:26Speaker 1: So I'm like, you know, I've got a picture of
- 13:29Speaker 1: this dear from social media, and I'll flash him a
- 13:32Speaker 1: picture of it and be like, you know, have you
- 13:34Speaker 1: even if it's a no, even they say no to hunting,
- 13:36Speaker 1: I'll still you know, strike up a conversation with him,
- 13:39Speaker 1: show him a picture, and you know, they can sometimes
- 13:43Speaker 1: be like oh yeah, yeah, like I've totally seen that dear.
- 13:47Speaker 1: He's huge, or they'll be like no, I've never really
- 13:49Speaker 1: seen one that big. Um. And so that particular northern deer,
- 13:54Speaker 1: just from door knocking, I was kind of able to
- 13:56Speaker 1: match like, Okay, this person has never seen him, this
- 13:59Speaker 1: person's ever seen him, this person claims they've seen one
- 14:02Speaker 1: like him or probably seen him, and you part you
- 14:05Speaker 1: start to kind of put the pieces of the puzzle together.
- 14:07Speaker 1: And then eventually I ran into someone who actually had
- 14:10Speaker 1: a picture on their phone of the deer, and that's
- 14:13Speaker 1: how I confirmed that that's where you know, that was
- 14:16Speaker 1: that deer's range. And then so then I just you know,
- 14:20Speaker 1: hit it running from there and just kind of started
- 14:22Speaker 1: to branch out and get as many cameras out in
- 14:25Speaker 1: that in that particular area. Is there every situation like
- 14:28Speaker 1: this Lee where there'll be a buck that's too well known,
- 14:33Speaker 1: like everyone knows about it and multiple people are are
- 14:36Speaker 1: are after will you ever pull out of the pull
- 14:39Speaker 1: out of the contest because you just know it's gonna
- 14:41Speaker 1: be a mess with nine other guys in there or
- 14:43Speaker 1: something like that. Yeah, I, um, I don't really like
- 14:47Speaker 1: to hunt deer. They are they are well known. UM,
- 14:50Speaker 1: I just don't like to start the pot with Karen's
- 14:52Speaker 1: and people like that. I just I don't really if
- 14:57Speaker 1: a deer is super well known, it's it's not like
- 14:59Speaker 1: I'm gonna go, you know, a target that particular dear
- 15:01Speaker 1: I tried to find. Dear, they're not that well known.
- 15:03Speaker 1: But there was a particular deer in Ohio that was
- 15:09Speaker 1: pretty well known and he was probably two inches. Last year, Wow,
- 15:16Speaker 1: a door knocked on a church and they had like
- 15:19Speaker 1: six acres behind their church. I got the yes, I
- 15:23Speaker 1: go back there, and the rubs I found were unreal,
- 15:28Speaker 1: Like I've literally never seen the size rubs that I
- 15:30Speaker 1: saw behind this church. And I was like, this has
- 15:34Speaker 1: to be that buck. And uh. As I was walking
- 15:39Speaker 1: out there and sticking a camera out, I actually had
- 15:42Speaker 1: a guy that was currently hunting that deer two houses over.
- 15:46Speaker 1: He's probably, you know, a couple hundred yards away, saw
- 15:49Speaker 1: me walk out from his stand and put a camera up.
- 15:51Speaker 1: I didn't even see. The guy ended up making a
- 15:55Speaker 1: condor becoming buddies with him, and he's hunted the deer
- 15:57Speaker 1: for several years, and I just was like one out
- 16:01Speaker 1: of respect for him and he's put in several years
- 16:04Speaker 1: hunting this deer. I was like, you know what, I
- 16:07Speaker 1: don't want to, you know, interfere with your hunt for
- 16:10Speaker 1: this dear, but too, I don't want to sit in
- 16:12Speaker 1: the stand and be looking at this guy every single
- 16:15Speaker 1: time that we go to hunt and just kind of
- 16:17Speaker 1: way at each other and be like, hey, what, dude, like,
- 16:20Speaker 1: that's not I don't really like that. It's not really
- 16:22Speaker 1: my style, and so I backed off of that, dear.
- 16:25Speaker 1: This year, he's two, wow, I can I can? Can
- 16:30Speaker 1: we say I have a spot to hunt a two
- 16:32Speaker 1: hundred fifty inch dear? But I have chosen not to.
- 16:35Speaker 1: You're a little crazily but I respect you for it.
- 16:40Speaker 1: Um so that this is exactly my next question. So
- 16:42Speaker 1: you just you just answered my next scenario. But what
- 16:46Speaker 1: if I were to pivot a little bit on what
- 16:48Speaker 1: you just described there? So so imagine you've got an
- 16:51Speaker 1: amazing spot like that where you know there's a big deer,
- 16:54Speaker 1: You've got him on camera, he seems dialed in, and
- 16:57Speaker 1: you feel good about it. But you go in there
- 16:59Speaker 1: to hunt. In this situation here is that it's not
- 17:03Speaker 1: another guy that has permission, but you spot a trespasser
- 17:06Speaker 1: that comes in, so you're hunting. You catch a trespasser
- 17:09Speaker 1: coming in that's trying to hunt the same spot. What
- 17:12Speaker 1: do you do in that scenario? Do you a do
- 17:15Speaker 1: you confront him or not? And then be when that's
- 17:18Speaker 1: all done, do you do you back out as well
- 17:20Speaker 1: because you know that this guy is messing around or
- 17:22Speaker 1: is that a scenario where you will still push it
- 17:24Speaker 1: because you're hoping to get rid of him or or whatever.
- 17:28Speaker 1: So if I have a scenario where I'm hunting, this
- 17:31Speaker 1: actually happened to me last year in Tennessee. Um, if
- 17:35Speaker 1: i have a scenario where I'm hunting and you know,
- 17:38Speaker 1: I run into a trespasser, the first thing I'm gonna
- 17:40Speaker 1: do is I'm gonna confront him, not in an aggressive way.
- 17:42Speaker 1: I'm just gonna go up to him and have a
- 17:44Speaker 1: conversation with him. I'm I'm not gonna you know, I
- 17:47Speaker 1: don't know who you're walking You don't know, you never
- 17:49Speaker 1: know who you're walking up on. They've obviously got a
- 17:52Speaker 1: bow and arrow with some weapon. It's like the last
- 17:54Speaker 1: thing you need to go do is go add fuel
- 17:57Speaker 1: to a fire and just you know, be aggressive. But yeah,
- 18:00Speaker 1: I'm go have a conversation with the guy, and I'll
- 18:04Speaker 1: obviously let him know like, hey, this is property I
- 18:07Speaker 1: have written permission to be on. I'll make sure that he,
- 18:10Speaker 1: you know, the landowner hadn't given permission to someone else
- 18:13Speaker 1: or anything like that. And so if I know that
- 18:15Speaker 1: he's you know, not supposed to be there, I'll ask him,
- 18:18Speaker 1: like respectfully to leave. Um, But if it takes a
- 18:25Speaker 1: step further or like you know, I'm not going to
- 18:28Speaker 1: call the game warden for like just right off the cuff.
- 18:31Speaker 1: I'm gonna have a conversation with this dude and see
- 18:34Speaker 1: if I can just handle it myself first. Um, And
- 18:41Speaker 1: if it continues to be an issue from there, I
- 18:43Speaker 1: feel like that's when you probably have to, you know,
- 18:45Speaker 1: contact the landowner and see kind of what they wanted
- 18:47Speaker 1: to do about it. So, um, I would. But you're saying,
- 18:54Speaker 1: like with him pressuring the de year, would you move
- 18:56Speaker 1: on from that area? Yeah? Like so, so you're not
- 18:59Speaker 1: backing out out of respect like you would with the
- 19:01Speaker 1: other person. So when this case, would you back up
- 19:03Speaker 1: just because you think it's busted or would you keep trying?
- 19:07Speaker 1: I would, depending on how much pressures in there, Um,
- 19:12Speaker 1: I would probably back out completely. I'd run a lot
- 19:15Speaker 1: of cameras and you know, see if that deer is
- 19:18Speaker 1: kind of getting comfortable being back in there, and then
- 19:20Speaker 1: I would kind of make my approach. I definitely would
- 19:22Speaker 1: not keep pushing it. If there's been a lot of
- 19:25Speaker 1: human activity in that area, I would back out. Let
- 19:28Speaker 1: everything settle down in there. Um. And sometimes that's weeks
- 19:33Speaker 1: before you know, things start to kind of return to normal. Yeah,
- 19:38Speaker 1: But I've also had areas that, you know, some of
- 19:41Speaker 1: the some of the places that we originally hunted in
- 19:44Speaker 1: Atlanta sixteen years ago, we're absolute honey hooles. And now
- 19:50Speaker 1: there's a lot of hunting pressure in some of these
- 19:53Speaker 1: places and it's kind of ruined some of these areas
- 19:57Speaker 1: that these these deer are very keen to human presence.
- 20:02Speaker 1: And there hadn't been a shooter buck in one of
- 20:04Speaker 1: these places that used to have two or three every
- 20:06Speaker 1: year and years because these bucks no, you know, hey,
- 20:12Speaker 1: I'm experiencing hunting pressure here. Everyone avoid that likes they
- 20:16Speaker 1: just know to avoid that area. Um, I think if
- 20:20Speaker 1: that I think if that area has left alone for
- 20:23Speaker 1: a year or two, that it would return to normal.
- 20:25Speaker 1: But um, these deer are super super good at finding
- 20:30Speaker 1: where there's pressure and where there's not. Like they're unreal
- 20:35Speaker 1: at finding where they're left alone and where they're experiencing pressure.
- 20:41Speaker 1: So would that in mind here here's the situation that
- 20:44Speaker 1: things kind of tied into that. Let's imagine you're you're
- 20:47Speaker 1: in your home turf. Now you're back back locally, and
- 20:50Speaker 1: there's a spot where you've had a big giant buck
- 20:53Speaker 1: on camera for an entire year previous and for whatever reason,
- 20:57Speaker 1: you didn't go after him, but you've been following him.
- 20:59Speaker 1: You know he's there. He's pretty consistent. The summer arrives.
- 21:03Speaker 1: You continue getting pictures of him all through the summer
- 21:06Speaker 1: up until two weeks before opening day, and for those
- 21:09Speaker 1: two weeks prior to opening day, no pictures. Ye, nothing.
- 21:15Speaker 1: Opening day arrives, you still don't have pictures of him.
- 21:18Speaker 1: When you look at that first day, are you going
- 21:20Speaker 1: to hunt blindly in these places where he used to
- 21:23Speaker 1: be or are you now at this point in search
- 21:25Speaker 1: mode and you don't hunt and in our stead trying
- 21:27Speaker 1: to find where he is? Which would yeah, I am
- 21:31Speaker 1: absolutely not hunting that spot. Um, I would be leaving
- 21:36Speaker 1: that place alone, because your first set is always your
- 21:41Speaker 1: best set and if you plan on hunting that spot
- 21:46Speaker 1: or like you know, if he happens to come back,
- 21:48Speaker 1: you know, during the rut or whatever, and you've already
- 21:51Speaker 1: had a lot of those deers start to pattern you
- 21:54Speaker 1: like where you're parking, where you're coming in, where you're
- 21:56Speaker 1: exiting those other does and younger bucks in there, like
- 22:00Speaker 1: if they're already patterning. You you know, you're you're really
- 22:03Speaker 1: affecting that area, even if he's in there or not.
- 22:06Speaker 1: I believe, and I don't want any of those dear
- 22:10Speaker 1: to be aware of my presence and me going in
- 22:13Speaker 1: and out at all. So if he's not in there
- 22:15Speaker 1: and I haven't seen him, sure you can get lucky
- 22:19Speaker 1: and the day he happens to come back, you're there.
- 22:22Speaker 1: But I'm in that situation, I'm never hunting there. I
- 22:26Speaker 1: feel like my time is better spent being back in
- 22:29Speaker 1: search mode, getting more spots, getting new cameras out and
- 22:34Speaker 1: finding kind of where he's at. H I rarely am
- 22:38Speaker 1: ever hunting. I'm rarely ever putting in sits where I
- 22:42Speaker 1: don't feel like I'm in the game, Because if I
- 22:47Speaker 1: don't feel like I'm in the game, I'm just kind
- 22:49Speaker 1: of doing more harm than good to that area. So
- 22:53Speaker 1: in that scenario, the week the seven days prior, what
- 22:57Speaker 1: does search mode look for you for this seven days
- 23:00Speaker 1: prior to that hunt? I mean, I'm curious, like how
- 23:02Speaker 1: many days are you doing something? What do you what
- 23:05Speaker 1: actually is the time component? Like how much time are
- 23:08Speaker 1: you spending on any one of these outings? Is it
- 23:11Speaker 1: just door knocking? How many doors would you try, Like,
- 23:13Speaker 1: what's the scale of the net you would try to cast?
- 23:16Speaker 1: Now at this point, what would that look like in
- 23:18Speaker 1: that seven days prior? So I would obviously get back
- 23:23Speaker 1: on my maps and be kind of looking at, you know,
- 23:26Speaker 1: where potentially he could have gone, uh, you know, in
- 23:31Speaker 1: places I haven't been um And I will door knock
- 23:36Speaker 1: and get as many cameras out as I possibly can
- 23:39Speaker 1: until I get a picture of him. Sometimes that's I've
- 23:43Speaker 1: had fifteen spots to hunt one particular dear before um so.
- 23:50Speaker 1: But sometimes that's not the case. Sometimes I've only got
- 23:53Speaker 1: two or three spots that I've got to hunt end dear,
- 23:56Speaker 1: and I'm seeing him on those cameras. Um So, in
- 24:01Speaker 1: that scenario, he's been gone for seven days, Like seriously,
- 24:05Speaker 1: even if it's opening day, I'm not hunting. He hadn't
- 24:07Speaker 1: been in there. I'm not hunting. I'm door knocking, getting
- 24:11Speaker 1: more cameras out, getting more eyes in the woods, and
- 24:13Speaker 1: trying to relocate kind of where he went. So I'm
- 24:18Speaker 1: kind of starting to cast a small net, you know,
- 24:21Speaker 1: going a quarter mile or less, um and then you know,
- 24:27Speaker 1: kind of branching out from there. So I kind of
- 24:31Speaker 1: just slowly kind of worked my way out until I
- 24:34Speaker 1: happened to stumble upon kind of where he's gone. But
- 24:37Speaker 1: the crazy part is, and this is extremely common and
- 24:43Speaker 1: these areas, is that the week of the season, it
- 24:47Speaker 1: just seems like these dear no and they change their pattern.
- 24:51Speaker 1: And I've I've had dear go three or four miles
- 24:55Speaker 1: and completely relocate from their summer area right at at
- 25:00Speaker 1: beginning time for him of the season. And it's like
- 25:02Speaker 1: you almost have to get just extremely lucky too, you know,
- 25:07Speaker 1: refined that deer. So a lot of times, you know,
- 25:11Speaker 1: if a deer goes missing, like we try our best
- 25:13Speaker 1: to relocate them, but a lot of times we don't.
- 25:16Speaker 1: And sometimes they'll return later in the year, um and
- 25:20Speaker 1: we have a chance to hunt him then, but sometimes
- 25:22Speaker 1: we It's kind of one of those things where it's like, yeah,
- 25:25Speaker 1: we have this deer in the summer, but when he
- 25:28Speaker 1: breaks for the season, like, for the life of me,
- 25:30Speaker 1: I have no idea where he goes. M how much
- 25:45Speaker 1: time would you give a buck like that, Like how
- 25:47Speaker 1: long would you invest in trying to rEFInd before you
- 25:50Speaker 1: pull the plug? Is it? I mean, I'm sure it's
- 25:52Speaker 1: dependent on the deer and stuff. Like that. But what's
- 25:54Speaker 1: your typical amount of effort you'll put in until you
- 25:57Speaker 1: finally decide and it's just not it's not gonna happen. Well,
- 26:00Speaker 1: if it's a big enough dear, it doesn't ever end.
- 26:04Speaker 1: Uh you know, it's it's uh well obviously, I mean,
- 26:09Speaker 1: you know, we're trying to find something else to hunt.
- 26:11Speaker 1: But if it's a big enough dear, I'll will spend
- 26:15Speaker 1: the whole year, uh you know, continue to get new
- 26:18Speaker 1: spots and just kind of hope, hope that we stumble
- 26:20Speaker 1: upon them. Um, so I would, I would kind of
- 26:24Speaker 1: say that it's almost never ending. Okay, So so what
- 26:28Speaker 1: about this? Then let's let's take a different approach. Let's
- 26:31Speaker 1: say the buck is showing up, and how about we'll
- 26:35Speaker 1: go back to your northern buck example. You've zeroed in
- 26:37Speaker 1: on him. You put so much time and energy into
- 26:39Speaker 1: this situation, and he's daylighting like he's a buck that's
- 26:44Speaker 1: showing up on your cameras. It's early October, he's in daylight.
- 26:48Speaker 1: The couple of previous days, you head in for a hunt,
- 26:51Speaker 1: you feel good about it, You get in their access
- 26:53Speaker 1: feels great, everything feels great. No show doesn't show up
- 26:57Speaker 1: and you gotta go home, said, you head home, you
- 27:01Speaker 1: give opportunity now, like the following weekend maybe to make
- 27:04Speaker 1: the trip again, and lo and behold, you're getting a
- 27:06Speaker 1: couple of days of daily pictures again leading up to
- 27:08Speaker 1: your next trip. Conditions are good. You're heading for the
- 27:11Speaker 1: second hunt of the year, feeling great again. No show,
- 27:16Speaker 1: this happens a third time. You stick around. You hunt
- 27:18Speaker 1: again that next day because still the wind is good,
- 27:20Speaker 1: you feel confident about your access. You've now had three
- 27:24Speaker 1: hunts after this buck, all of them following up daylight
- 27:28Speaker 1: trail camera pictures. But he's not shown up any one
- 27:31Speaker 1: of those times. You go in. What do you do
- 27:34Speaker 1: in that scenario? Will you continue on your current path
- 27:38Speaker 1: with the same access, the same ideas you've had, and
- 27:41Speaker 1: just hope that you know it's gonna turn out, or
- 27:44Speaker 1: at what point do you pull the plug and say
- 27:48Speaker 1: he's onto me, I'm I need to do something different. Uh.
- 27:53Speaker 1: That's a really good question, and kind of like I
- 27:57Speaker 1: said earlier, these dear, I don't I think we don't
- 28:00Speaker 1: give him enough credit sometimes for how good they are
- 28:03Speaker 1: at patterning you. And I cannot tell you how many
- 28:09Speaker 1: times that happens to us. It happens every year. You
- 28:12Speaker 1: know that we get a here on camera, he's consistent.
- 28:15Speaker 1: All right, we're green lighting to go hunt him. We
- 28:18Speaker 1: go sit nothing, you know, sit again, nothing, and it's
- 28:22Speaker 1: like the days that we pull out, he's daylighting again.
- 28:27Speaker 1: Go back in there. And even even if you think
- 28:30Speaker 1: you're doing everything perfect, like you do everything to the
- 28:32Speaker 1: best of your ability, and he's still not showing he's
- 28:37Speaker 1: onto in my opinion, Um, and that's where if that
- 28:42Speaker 1: happens two or three times, that is where I'm going
- 28:46Speaker 1: to take a step back and be like, all right,
- 28:48Speaker 1: I gotta rethink what I'm doing here of how I'm
- 28:51Speaker 1: accessing access to these places is almost as important as anything.
- 28:58Speaker 1: Um I hunted a d or here's here's kind of
- 29:00Speaker 1: an example for you. And this was this was probably
- 29:05Speaker 1: four or five years ago. And like we're always still
- 29:08Speaker 1: learning every single year, we're learning new things. Uh, we
- 29:12Speaker 1: definitely don't have it figured out. Like we don't have
- 29:14Speaker 1: it all figured out. There are things to learn every year,
- 29:17Speaker 1: and you need to be a sponge to try and
- 29:20Speaker 1: absorb any lessons to be learned from every hunt, every situation.
- 29:23Speaker 1: Question I had a deer. This was probably I think
- 29:26Speaker 1: four years ago and that exact scenario that deer is
- 29:32Speaker 1: in there. He loved this area, but every time I
- 29:35Speaker 1: was in there, he was never there, never be found.
- 29:40Speaker 1: And I hunted fifty times in a in a seat
- 29:44Speaker 1: in one season. I sat fifty sits, parking my truck
- 29:48Speaker 1: in the same parking spot and accessing the woods the
- 29:52Speaker 1: same way. And every single time I'd go to sit,
- 29:58Speaker 1: I would not see that dear and every time and
- 30:01Speaker 1: be gone. He'd come through like it was nothing, and
- 30:05Speaker 1: he was he was so confident and when I was
- 30:10Speaker 1: there and when I wasn't, Like he loved that area,
- 30:12Speaker 1: but he was so confident and he knew my my
- 30:17Speaker 1: pattern and what I was doing that when he knew
- 30:19Speaker 1: I wasn't there, he was like, you know, daylight, middle
- 30:22Speaker 1: of the day, there all the time. Uh. And so
- 30:26Speaker 1: I've I've sat fifty times. And at the end of
- 30:29Speaker 1: the season, I was like, or actually what happened was
- 30:34Speaker 1: later in the year, I pulled my truck up to
- 30:36Speaker 1: my parking spot. I hadn't even gotten out of the car,
- 30:40Speaker 1: and I heard a dear blow like you know, way
- 30:44Speaker 1: in the woods, way down deep into this ravine and stuff,
- 30:48Speaker 1: and I'm like, sign of a bit, they figured out
- 30:52Speaker 1: where I'm parking, and so that's when it kind of
- 30:55Speaker 1: clicked in my head. I was like, they've they've figured
- 30:58Speaker 1: me out. And so this was late in the year January.
- 31:02Speaker 1: I'd gone this whole season accessing and parking the same spot,
- 31:05Speaker 1: and I had changed my trees, like I had changed
- 31:09Speaker 1: the tree. I had my stand in like three or
- 31:11Speaker 1: four times in this area, thinking, oh, you know, they
- 31:14Speaker 1: pegged me in that tree, or I'm gonna make my
- 31:16Speaker 1: access shorter. And so instead of going, you know, a
- 31:21Speaker 1: hundred yards in the woods, I'm gonna go forty yards
- 31:23Speaker 1: into the woods, just like changing things up, you know.
- 31:28Speaker 1: But what it was was where I was parking and
- 31:30Speaker 1: walking in like they had it figured out. So I
- 31:33Speaker 1: sat fifty times accessing and parking from that same spot.
- 31:38Speaker 1: I let my I let the area layoff, let my
- 31:41Speaker 1: cameras roll in the there. He came back in there,
- 31:44Speaker 1: he settled in there, got comfortable. I asked the landowner
- 31:47Speaker 1: if I could access from the opposite side of the
- 31:49Speaker 1: property just one time, and I killed a deer the
- 31:51Speaker 1: first set changing. And it was because he I actually
- 31:56Speaker 1: used what he had figured out about me. I had
- 32:00Speaker 1: is that against him because he was like, if that
- 32:02Speaker 1: truck doesn't pull up in that spot, we're good to go.
- 32:06Speaker 1: And that day, that truck didn't pull up in that spot,
- 32:08Speaker 1: and he got up like he was good to go,
- 32:10Speaker 1: and that's when I killed him. So where was he?
- 32:12Speaker 1: Did you see where he betted or where he came from?
- 32:15Speaker 1: Did you do you kind of understand how he had
- 32:17Speaker 1: you pegged? Once he saw what he actually did. He
- 32:19Speaker 1: was betting literally right next to where my truck would park.
- 32:24Speaker 1: So when I was pulling my truck in, that's where
- 32:27Speaker 1: he was. He was he was He knew it immediately
- 32:29Speaker 1: and then and then would leave. There was no second guessing.
- 32:33Speaker 1: When I was in there. As soon as the truck
- 32:35Speaker 1: was there, he was twenty yards from the truck boom gone.
- 32:39Speaker 1: Is that a thing you have you ever seen anything
- 32:41Speaker 1: like that before? Where these big old deer actually figure
- 32:45Speaker 1: out that betting closer to human access is safer from
- 32:50Speaker 1: like a surveillance standpoint. Is that a thing you've seen before? Absolutely,
- 32:55Speaker 1: which which makes them And that's that's kind of what's
- 32:57Speaker 1: Tricky's like, Uh, this so this deer up north, Uh,
- 33:04Speaker 1: this real big one I'm talking about, he will stroll
- 33:07Speaker 1: through people's yards no problem. And seeing the videos and
- 33:13Speaker 1: pictures and stuff, like, you're like, where's the challenge in
- 33:16Speaker 1: hunting that deer. But when I went up there and
- 33:20Speaker 1: started door knocking all of the large blocks of woods,
- 33:25Speaker 1: like the obvious blocks of woods to go door knock,
- 33:28Speaker 1: con every single one of them has hunters, and that
- 33:33Speaker 1: deer is purposely avoiding those large blocks of woods. Like
- 33:39Speaker 1: instead of taking a creek through all these woods to
- 33:42Speaker 1: get from one block of woods to the other, he'll
- 33:45Speaker 1: roll through people's yards to get from point A to
- 33:48Speaker 1: point B because he's like, I know, I can't be
- 33:49Speaker 1: messed with here. And he's experienced pressure. He actually got
- 33:53Speaker 1: shot last year by a hunter and it didn't kill him.
- 33:55Speaker 1: They hit him in no man's land, um, And so
- 33:59Speaker 1: I know he's experienced all this this hunting pressure in
- 34:02Speaker 1: these places and he's very clearly avoiding them. So yeah,
- 34:07Speaker 1: I mean, but to kind of really answer your question, yeah, absolutely,
- 34:12Speaker 1: Like these dear uh, they bed where they can know
- 34:19Speaker 1: that the area they're gonna get up, get up and
- 34:22Speaker 1: go spend time in, Uh, they know that it's not
- 34:26Speaker 1: been tampered with, So they will they will position themselves
- 34:29Speaker 1: in places where they're able to kind of be aware
- 34:34Speaker 1: of what's happening in there. All right, Well, let's say
- 34:38Speaker 1: you're up north, You're in one of these spots, You're
- 34:42Speaker 1: up in your tree, and here he comes. He pops
- 34:46Speaker 1: out of a little piece of brush on the edge
- 34:49Speaker 1: of the yard or something. You had your access just right,
- 34:52Speaker 1: and he's at sixty five yards heading your direction. Walk
- 34:59Speaker 1: me through through what is going on in your head,
- 35:02Speaker 1: Like specifically, do you say anything to yourself? Do you
- 35:05Speaker 1: have a mantra? Do you what? When do you reach
- 35:08Speaker 1: for your bow? How are you going to be thinking
- 35:10Speaker 1: about these next ten seconds when the biggest buck of
- 35:14Speaker 1: your life is rolling in You even invested so much
- 35:16Speaker 1: time and energy into There's gotta be pressure. There's gotta
- 35:19Speaker 1: be stress. How do you manage that? What do you do?
- 35:24Speaker 1: So early on in my hunting career was pretty brutal
- 35:29Speaker 1: on me, uh, to the point where like multiple times
- 35:34Speaker 1: I just wanted to just hang it up and quit
- 35:37Speaker 1: because I was experiencing like heartache after heartache because you know,
- 35:42Speaker 1: when I was sixteen and stumbled upon Drew and I
- 35:44Speaker 1: stumbled upon the Atlanta thing. Uh, you know, we have
- 35:49Speaker 1: real big deer to hunt and so it's like, you know,
- 35:53Speaker 1: I didn't really grow up on a hunting family. So
- 35:56Speaker 1: if it weren't for stumbling onto the door knocking thing,
- 36:00Speaker 1: never would have fallen in love with hunting. But that
- 36:02Speaker 1: being said, I didn't have someone teaching me from day one.
- 36:06Speaker 1: You know, hey, wait for the deer to do this
- 36:09Speaker 1: or this or that. And so I was making mistakes.
- 36:14Speaker 1: You know, I can shoot my bow and hit hit
- 36:16Speaker 1: a you know, the target as good as good as
- 36:18Speaker 1: you want, but when it's a deer's in front of you,
- 36:22Speaker 1: it's a total different scenario. You gotta read the deer's
- 36:25Speaker 1: body language, you gotta read what angle he's at. You know,
- 36:30Speaker 1: there's so much that goes into making a well placed shot,
- 36:34Speaker 1: an effective kill shot on an animal. Um, I wasn't
- 36:39Speaker 1: really prepared for that. And so I was you know,
- 36:43Speaker 1: hitting deer uh, and you know, hit a deer in
- 36:47Speaker 1: the shoulder or in no man's lander or a quarter
- 36:49Speaker 1: two or he's like you know, alert and ducks, and
- 36:52Speaker 1: just I wasn't. I also like I had a hard time.
- 36:57Speaker 1: I wasn't hugging the shoulder. I would kind of pay
- 37:00Speaker 1: nick and I would be like kind of back off
- 37:02Speaker 1: the shoulder. A bit, and uh, you know, I end
- 37:06Speaker 1: up hitting dear like in the liver and stuff like that,
- 37:09Speaker 1: and just uh, it made for some really tragic, like
- 37:14Speaker 1: heartbreaker stories on really nice bucks. It's not like, you know,
- 37:18Speaker 1: I messed up on a dough. Um, although that sucks,
- 37:22Speaker 1: it's not as as gut wrenching is if it's as
- 37:26Speaker 1: if it's a hundred fifteer. So like my early early on,
- 37:30Speaker 1: my career like was full of just mistakes, mistakes, mistakes,
- 37:35Speaker 1: and I think a lot of it was due to
- 37:38Speaker 1: rushing the situation. Um, things just started happening so fast
- 37:44Speaker 1: and I couldn't control my head and things would rush,
- 37:46Speaker 1: and I'd rush into a shot that was not an
- 37:49Speaker 1: effective shot. And I should have been patient and I
- 37:52Speaker 1: should have waited. So there's kind of a combination of things.
- 37:58Speaker 1: Now you have to be paid patient and take the
- 38:01Speaker 1: right shot, but you also have to be aggressive when
- 38:03Speaker 1: that shot opportunity happens. You can't hesitate. Um, when I
- 38:09Speaker 1: see that, Dear, I'm trying to slow everything down as
- 38:13Speaker 1: as best as I possibly can. I'm trying to slow
- 38:15Speaker 1: everything down in my head. Uh, And that's really all
- 38:19Speaker 1: I'm focusing on, is slowing things down, slowing things down.
- 38:23Speaker 1: Focus on the focus on killing deer. Focus on killing deer.
- 38:27Speaker 1: Be patient, but slow it down, Slow it down, because
- 38:31Speaker 1: I think a lot of mistakes are made when people
- 38:34Speaker 1: just rushed the moment because they're jacked up. So like,
- 38:37Speaker 1: I try to force myself to slow down. Um. But
- 38:41Speaker 1: one of the biggest things that I've done that has
- 38:44Speaker 1: helped me just become better at just killing deer is, uh,
- 38:48Speaker 1: shooting a ton of doze. We've got a pile of
- 38:51Speaker 1: does here, and when you shoot ten does a year,
- 38:57Speaker 1: you get to feeling that confidence that you're just just
- 39:00Speaker 1: feel deadly. And so I've kind of got that confidence
- 39:05Speaker 1: with me now where it's like if a deer is
- 39:07Speaker 1: sixty yards and then he's in my mind, I have
- 39:09Speaker 1: that confidence like he's dead. And that comes from shooting
- 39:14Speaker 1: a lot of deer, shooting does. Um. It's just kind
- 39:18Speaker 1: of that confidence that you have, like that you kind
- 39:22Speaker 1: of carry with you. So I like, if I had
- 39:24Speaker 1: to give any advice to someone kind of getting into
- 39:26Speaker 1: this or or starting into bow hunting, is like, don't
- 39:30Speaker 1: jump right into it and try to kill a hundred
- 39:32Speaker 1: fifty deer, Like go on a go on a place
- 39:35Speaker 1: where you know, you can shoot a dough you know,
- 39:38Speaker 1: kind of go through and find find the motions that
- 39:41Speaker 1: work for you, on on what calms you down, and
- 39:43Speaker 1: kind of the system you have that helps you put,
- 39:46Speaker 1: you know, an efficient shot on a deer so that
- 39:48Speaker 1: you're kind of ready for when that moment happens, because
- 39:51Speaker 1: it's it's impossible to replicate that just adrenaline dump when
- 39:55Speaker 1: you lay eyes on a deer you're after. Yeah, that's true.
- 40:00Speaker 1: But my big thing is I'm just I'm just trying
- 40:01Speaker 1: to slow things down. Focus on really just slowing it down.
- 40:05Speaker 1: Is there any trick or I mean, like I guess
- 40:08Speaker 1: the question that I'm still wondering about it is like
- 40:13Speaker 1: how do you actually slow it down? Because like, like
- 40:15Speaker 1: I intellectually know I need to slow it down the moment,
- 40:17Speaker 1: but it's a lot harder to know I need to
- 40:19Speaker 1: slow it down versus like figuring out a way to
- 40:21Speaker 1: hit the brakes and actually make my crazy mind do
- 40:25Speaker 1: that in that high pressure situation. Like, do you have
- 40:27Speaker 1: any thing that you always do to force the slowing?
- 40:32Speaker 1: Not really? Um, I mean I've remembered several times where
- 40:36Speaker 1: like I've had a deer in range and he was
- 40:41Speaker 1: like facing me for a long time, and I remember
- 40:45Speaker 1: in my head, I'm like, I've got to pretend like
- 40:47Speaker 1: this isn't happening, Like I've got to put myself somewhere else,
- 40:49Speaker 1: like I'm on the beach, I'm doing something like I'm
- 40:53Speaker 1: having a beer. I'm not you know, I'm I'm doing
- 40:55Speaker 1: anything I can to be like I'm not here right now.
- 40:58Speaker 1: I don't know if it really works or not. I
- 41:00Speaker 1: don't think it does. But um, the only thing I'm
- 41:05Speaker 1: really doing when you know, I see a deer like that,
- 41:10Speaker 1: is I'm trying to I'm I'm telling myself in my
- 41:13Speaker 1: head be patient, Like be patient, be patient, be patient,
- 41:17Speaker 1: but be ready. It's like, I'm ready to kill that
- 41:20Speaker 1: deer at any second, but be patient, be patient, like
- 41:23Speaker 1: wait for the right shot. And you know, don't. I'm
- 41:29Speaker 1: I'm not going to force a shot and take a
- 41:32Speaker 1: marginal hit on an animal. Um, you know, I would
- 41:36Speaker 1: rather take the chance of I'm gonna get back on
- 41:38Speaker 1: that deer at another time then you know, put a
- 41:43Speaker 1: really bad hit on a deer. Ah. So I'm I'm
- 41:48Speaker 1: pretty much just telling myself be patient in my head. Yeah, Well,
- 41:52Speaker 1: I hate to do this to you. But I'm gonna
- 41:54Speaker 1: I'm gonna force you to consider tragedy again, okay, because
- 41:59Speaker 1: I want to know what you would do. And this
- 42:01Speaker 1: is a situation that actually happened to me last Yearly.
- 42:04Speaker 1: I went on my first urban deer hunt last year,
- 42:07Speaker 1: and was that with Taylor? Yeah? Yeah, it went with Taylor,
- 42:12Speaker 1: and I got a shot at a deer and the
- 42:15Speaker 1: hit looked good in the moment um, but the blood
- 42:19Speaker 1: trail wasn't as the arrow, and the blood trail was
- 42:22Speaker 1: not as good as I was hoping it would be.
- 42:24Speaker 1: It did not match what I thought I saw in
- 42:26Speaker 1: my mind's eye. So it's getting worse and worse and worse.
- 42:28Speaker 1: And we follow that blood trail all the way to
- 42:31Speaker 1: a property line, and I have to go and find
- 42:34Speaker 1: the property owners and get permission. So I go to
- 42:37Speaker 1: the door, knock on the door, and the landowner is
- 42:41Speaker 1: like wigging out, like no way, I'm calling the cops
- 42:45Speaker 1: on you. There's no way you can track the here.
- 42:48Speaker 1: What do you do in this scenario like that where
- 42:50Speaker 1: you have hit a deer, it's crossed the line and
- 42:53Speaker 1: the landowner won't give you permission. Whether it be like
- 42:57Speaker 1: just freaking out like that or I've be curious what
- 43:00Speaker 1: they do. What you would do in my situation where
- 43:02Speaker 1: the cops were called and came out, how would you
- 43:05Speaker 1: handle that. I'm really glad that your first urban experience
- 43:11Speaker 1: the cops are called experience. Yeah, yeah, yeah, full experience. Um. So,
- 43:22Speaker 1: I've actually never had a situation where a homeowner has
- 43:26Speaker 1: refused or landners refused to let me retrieve a dear.
- 43:30Speaker 1: I assume the reason that that that they are not
- 43:32Speaker 1: wanting you to track is because they're anti hunting. Maybe
- 43:36Speaker 1: they like the deer um, they have a heart for
- 43:39Speaker 1: the deer, and so I'm trying to, you know, play
- 43:43Speaker 1: into that of whether or not they agree with hunting.
- 43:46Speaker 1: What's done, what's happened, has happened. They can't change that
- 43:49Speaker 1: I've shot this dear. The situation we have is that
- 43:53Speaker 1: you either let me retrieved this deer, or the deer
- 43:57Speaker 1: can be put to use and we can use the
- 43:59Speaker 1: meat and it and all of the deer's used, or
- 44:03Speaker 1: you can have the situation where that deer rots and
- 44:06Speaker 1: goes to a complete and total waste and having that
- 44:11Speaker 1: talk track that conversation, Like, I've never had issues retrieving
- 44:16Speaker 1: deer because even if they're adamantly opposed to it. Uh,
- 44:20Speaker 1: they still don't want the deer to completely rot and
- 44:22Speaker 1: go to waste. That being said, if someone was still
- 44:25Speaker 1: just extremely emotional about it, I'd let him call the cops.
- 44:31Speaker 1: I would. I would probably encourage them McCaul a, cops, um,
- 44:36Speaker 1: you know, and then that way I could be like, look,
- 44:39Speaker 1: you could have a conversation with the cops. I'm sure
- 44:41Speaker 1: that the cop would be like, look, you know, I
- 44:43Speaker 1: could probably call that person down and be like, you know,
- 44:46Speaker 1: we are where we are, the deer's back there, you know,
- 44:50Speaker 1: can we did? He would. He would probably try to
- 44:52Speaker 1: encourage the lanterner to be like, let's not let this
- 44:54Speaker 1: deer go to rot. Let's get out of here. Get
- 44:57Speaker 1: it out of here, and you know, we can kind
- 45:00Speaker 1: of address the hunting issue later. But I would tell
- 45:03Speaker 1: him to call the cops. I deal with the cops
- 45:06Speaker 1: a lot, so so in my case, the cops were
- 45:12Speaker 1: really cool. Um, but the landowners still didn't want us
- 45:15Speaker 1: around there. But the situation was different than what you described,
- 45:19Speaker 1: was that we didn't know if the deer was dead
- 45:21Speaker 1: in there, and it ended up being that the blood
- 45:23Speaker 1: trail actually hugged the line and we were able to
- 45:25Speaker 1: pick up blood on another neighbor's property right off the edge,
- 45:30Speaker 1: and that lander did give us permission, but the trail
- 45:35Speaker 1: dried up after that and we never recovered the deer.
- 45:37Speaker 1: So that was that's that is one of the toughest
- 45:42Speaker 1: parts of There's just there's so many different things that
- 45:47Speaker 1: are tough about suburban hunting. One is like tight property lines.
- 45:51Speaker 1: You know, you're having to talk to everyone involved. Two
- 45:54Speaker 1: is you know, you're just dealing with a lot of
- 45:56Speaker 1: people and you just getting a lot of mixed opinions
- 46:00Speaker 1: about what you're doing, whether they're against it or for it.
- 46:04Speaker 1: And you know, I would much rather, uh have a
- 46:10Speaker 1: few hundred acres or a thousand acres where you didn't
- 46:13Speaker 1: have to worry about that. But um, you know, this
- 46:17Speaker 1: was kind of a the urban game is kind of
- 46:20Speaker 1: the cards we were dealt. We're making the most of it,
- 46:22Speaker 1: and it's definitely something I've fallen in love with. Even
- 46:25Speaker 1: though there are a significant amount of stresses to come
- 46:28Speaker 1: along with it. You certainly made the most of it. Definitely,
- 46:33Speaker 1: it's not for everyone, Like I I totally get that. Um,
- 46:38Speaker 1: you know, some people don't want to deal with with
- 46:42Speaker 1: the reason they're going hunting is to get away from people,
- 46:44Speaker 1: not to deal with more of them. So, uh, you know,
- 46:48Speaker 1: I definitely get that. Some people are like, look, the
- 46:52Speaker 1: urban thing not my deal, And I don't blame them
- 46:55Speaker 1: at all. It's a it's it takes us us actual
- 47:00Speaker 1: kind of hunter. Um, you know, they can tolerate and
- 47:03Speaker 1: kind of deal with that stuff. And and again, I
- 47:05Speaker 1: think it goes back to you know, everyone's hunting means
- 47:08Speaker 1: a lot of things to different people. And if you're
- 47:10Speaker 1: doing it to get lost on some big woods where
- 47:13Speaker 1: you're not having to deal with people, then and that's
- 47:16Speaker 1: your thing, like, go for it. But for me, I
- 47:19Speaker 1: grew up in a city and for me to get
- 47:21Speaker 1: lost on ten acres is the next best thing where
- 47:25Speaker 1: I'm getting away from people. So it's uh yeah, it's
- 47:31Speaker 1: definitely different. It's not for everybody. I totally get that,
- 47:34Speaker 1: and uh, I'm I'm getting a lot of changing perspectives
- 47:37Speaker 1: on it too, because, um, you know, we just went
- 47:40Speaker 1: to Hawaii and did a lot of spot and stock stuff.
- 47:43Speaker 1: We just got back from Utah and did some scouting
- 47:47Speaker 1: for like mule do you're out there. I'm going to
- 47:50Speaker 1: Kansas this year. I hunted North Dakota last year, which is,
- 47:54Speaker 1: you know, the middle of nowhere, and uh, I definitely
- 47:59Speaker 1: get where if you know, I grew up hunting, some
- 48:03Speaker 1: of those are big areas where I would kind of
- 48:05Speaker 1: be like, you know, not wanting to get into the
- 48:08Speaker 1: urban game. Yeah, it's a different whole, different ball of wax.
- 48:12Speaker 1: That's ah, that's for certain. Do you think you'll do
- 48:14Speaker 1: it again? You know, I kind of fall into the
- 48:20Speaker 1: camp of the person you describe, which is I like
- 48:23Speaker 1: hunting because I like to get away from people. So
- 48:26Speaker 1: I actually grew up like I learned a bow hunt
- 48:29Speaker 1: in a semi urban scenario, Like I had three acres
- 48:32Speaker 1: behind my parents house and that's where I first bowhunted,
- 48:34Speaker 1: And the first deer I ever killed was on those
- 48:36Speaker 1: three acres after a couple and their dog came walking
- 48:40Speaker 1: past me ten yards in front of my blind. It's
- 48:42Speaker 1: like I did that. I have some experience, and I
- 48:46Speaker 1: see the redeeming qualities. But if I have a non
- 48:50Speaker 1: urban opportunity, which I currently do, I prefer that over
- 48:54Speaker 1: that situation just because of the stresses of people, and
- 48:57Speaker 1: I don't always like being around people, I guess. So yeah,
- 49:01Speaker 1: there's a lot of added stress to it, but so
- 49:04Speaker 1: I wouldn't. It's also still super supporting it. Yeah, I
- 49:08Speaker 1: can see the appeal. I'm not ruling out going back.
- 49:12Speaker 1: It's definitely I have, like I have that personality trait
- 49:16Speaker 1: we're if I don't quite get it figured out that
- 49:18Speaker 1: first time, that kind of gnaws at me until I
- 49:21Speaker 1: can figure it out. So I still think that's a possibility,
- 49:25Speaker 1: but I can tell you it won't be this year.
- 49:26Speaker 1: I'm taking at least this year off. I can breathe, regroup,
- 49:32Speaker 1: and then we'll readdress the situation. Here's another one I
- 49:48Speaker 1: got for it leave and this is this is one
- 49:50Speaker 1: that I ask a lot of people a question like
- 49:53Speaker 1: this because it's a scenario that I come up across
- 49:55Speaker 1: hunting in you know, various Midwestern places and stuff, and
- 49:59Speaker 1: I'm I'm wondering if it's different for you in an
- 50:03Speaker 1: urban situation than it would be for me on a
- 50:05Speaker 1: hundred acre farm in the Midwest. So here's the deal.
- 50:08Speaker 1: Let's say it's November and you are on the ground
- 50:12Speaker 1: scouting a spot. I don't know why you're scouting, but
- 50:14Speaker 1: let's say you just had to move into a new prop.
- 50:16Speaker 1: Maybe you just got to access on this property and
- 50:19Speaker 1: you're walking it for the first time. You get out
- 50:22Speaker 1: there and you find just a dynamite spot, like it's
- 50:24Speaker 1: a spot that screams big buck. It's a it's like
- 50:28Speaker 1: a funnel type location where stuff converges into a relatively
- 50:33Speaker 1: narrow area. There's good trails dumping into this spot. There's
- 50:37Speaker 1: dough betting up wind of it, and there's just ripped
- 50:40Speaker 1: up scrapes and rubs like all the things you dream about.
- 50:42Speaker 1: It's all here. It looks great, but there's a problem.
- 50:46Speaker 1: The problem is that there's not a good tree with
- 50:49Speaker 1: an easy range of this like perfect little convergence of
- 50:53Speaker 1: these trails in this little narrow spot. So you've got
- 50:56Speaker 1: two tree options. You've got one tree out and that
- 51:01Speaker 1: is at twenty yards from this spot where there's a
- 51:04Speaker 1: huge scrape and the three trails that all come together,
- 51:06Speaker 1: so you could be perfectly twenty yards from this spot.
- 51:09Speaker 1: The problem with the tree is that it is a
- 51:11Speaker 1: bean pole. It is super skinny, there's zero cover on it,
- 51:16Speaker 1: and there's one other trail that's on the down wind
- 51:20Speaker 1: side of that as well, and you know that there's
- 51:23Speaker 1: a chance that there could be deer coming down wind
- 51:25Speaker 1: of you. And it's not you know, you're still you're
- 51:27Speaker 1: downwind of the best of the best, but no cover
- 51:31Speaker 1: in the tree, and there's still a chance that someone
- 51:33Speaker 1: could get behind you. So that's one option. The second
- 51:36Speaker 1: option is a perfect tree. It's like a scrubby oak
- 51:41Speaker 1: tree with all sorts of branches coming out of it,
- 51:43Speaker 1: and there's still leaf cover and you could get up
- 51:45Speaker 1: in there and they'll never see you. And it's downwind
- 51:49Speaker 1: of all the trails, and there's a little bit of
- 51:51Speaker 1: water that's a water feature behind you, let's say, like
- 51:53Speaker 1: a pond or a creek or something, so you feel
- 51:56Speaker 1: very confident that nothing's gonna wind you. And know, by
- 51:59Speaker 1: the way, this is a high deer density area, so
- 52:02Speaker 1: there are a deer, a lot of deer moving around.
- 52:04Speaker 1: So my question for you, Lee is do you take
- 52:06Speaker 1: the easy shot tree that's close to the convergence but
- 52:09Speaker 1: has these risks, or do you say, I'd rather be
- 52:13Speaker 1: super safely downwind of everything and risk this dear being
- 52:17Speaker 1: you know, forty four yards away instead of twenty. What
- 52:21Speaker 1: would you do in that case? Uh, that's a enough
- 52:23Speaker 1: brainer to me. I'm taking the treat it as further
- 52:27Speaker 1: away but more ideal and I guess you could sort
- 52:32Speaker 1: of like for me personally, I'm comfortable shooting to to
- 52:36Speaker 1: you know, forty yards um. But for someone who's not,
- 52:41Speaker 1: I would still say use the tree that's far off
- 52:45Speaker 1: of the you know, the scrape and then in the
- 52:47Speaker 1: combining of trails and stuff, because you can almost treat
- 52:51Speaker 1: that your sits as like an observation set, so you
- 52:57Speaker 1: at least know that you're not going in there and
- 52:59Speaker 1: blowing stuff off up and busting stuff up and you know,
- 53:02Speaker 1: blowing deer out trying to get that perfect twenty yard shot.
- 53:07Speaker 1: Ease your way into it. I would start in that
- 53:09Speaker 1: tree that's further off, and if you sit there a
- 53:11Speaker 1: couple of times and you know, you do a couple
- 53:14Speaker 1: of observation sets even and you kind of learned like, okay,
- 53:18Speaker 1: these are where the deer coming from. I do think
- 53:21Speaker 1: I could get away with being in that beans or
- 53:23Speaker 1: that poultry. Um, then you could maybe make an adjustment there.
- 53:28Speaker 1: But I definitely would not barge in and uh, you know,
- 53:33Speaker 1: be making your presence super known and kind of be
- 53:37Speaker 1: risking blowing a bunch of deer out. I would rather
- 53:40Speaker 1: play it safe and kind of ease my way into it.
- 53:44Speaker 1: I also think that we use mock scrapes a lot,
- 53:48Speaker 1: So I would like to get in that tree. That's
- 53:50Speaker 1: a lot better. Your winds better, your access is better,
- 53:53Speaker 1: your cover is better. I'd throw in a mock scrape
- 53:56Speaker 1: twenty five yards from that tree and see if they
- 53:59Speaker 1: start to take to it, uh, and then you know,
- 54:02Speaker 1: kind of go from there. So interesting. You can also
- 54:07Speaker 1: call too, I mean you can rattle and potentially call
- 54:09Speaker 1: it you're in the shooting range. But I definitely And
- 54:13Speaker 1: that's again, that's just personally, that's my style. Like I
- 54:16Speaker 1: want to try and be as smart, and I'm almost
- 54:20Speaker 1: like I almost overthink every situation, uh, because I'm so
- 54:28Speaker 1: paranoid that these deer are going to be aware of
- 54:32Speaker 1: my presence. Is there ever a situation like that where
- 54:38Speaker 1: because of the proximity of other people, like specifically with wind.
- 54:42Speaker 1: One of the things I wondered about my urban hunt
- 54:44Speaker 1: was can I get away with more from a wind perspective,
- 54:48Speaker 1: because even if they're not used to people walking down
- 54:51Speaker 1: into the creek bottom, there's kids playing on the edge
- 54:54Speaker 1: of the yard fifty yards away, and the wind's got
- 54:56Speaker 1: to blow in there a lot, And can I get
- 54:58Speaker 1: away with the wind being a little bit more funky
- 55:00Speaker 1: than I would in other places, Like, would you like
- 55:03Speaker 1: take that same scenario, but let's adjust it just a
- 55:06Speaker 1: little bit and just say, like the big limiting factor
- 55:09Speaker 1: now is just like it's down the bottom and the
- 55:12Speaker 1: wind's gonna swirl. You think, like it's a steep little bottom.
- 55:15Speaker 1: There's two yards on either side of the creek, but
- 55:17Speaker 1: the deer are traveling down the creek bottom. Would you
- 55:20Speaker 1: risk a swirly whirly wind down there? Or do you
- 55:23Speaker 1: think like you can get away with that sometimes because
- 55:25Speaker 1: of the urban you know, stuff going on, So I think, yeah,
- 55:31Speaker 1: I mean there's a there's one of the big misconceptions
- 55:34Speaker 1: with urban deers that oh, you don't have to worry
- 55:37Speaker 1: about your wind. They smell people all the time. They're
- 55:39Speaker 1: used to it. Well, they're used to smelling people and
- 55:43Speaker 1: being and being able to identify where that that smell,
- 55:47Speaker 1: that source is coming from. So if they smell kids
- 55:52Speaker 1: playing in the yard and the kids are making noise
- 55:54Speaker 1: and moving around and they sit there and they're seeing them,
- 55:58Speaker 1: that's no issue to them. But when they're walking through
- 56:02Speaker 1: the woods and where you know, times out of a hundred,
- 56:07Speaker 1: they're not smelling someone that they can't see, and all
- 56:12Speaker 1: of a sudden, they're walking through the woods, they get
- 56:13Speaker 1: a whiff of a human and they're like, where where
- 56:15Speaker 1: is he? Where is he can't find I can't see him.
- 56:20Speaker 1: That's when they're they're busting you. We get busted all time. Um.
- 56:25Speaker 1: I had a situation last year where I'm on a
- 56:27Speaker 1: doe hunt's late season and you know, I had this
- 56:30Speaker 1: deer catch my wind. She blew and kind of ran
- 56:35Speaker 1: back like I don't know, eighty yards and she was
- 56:39Speaker 1: standing like ten ft below this person's deck, like right
- 56:43Speaker 1: behind their garage door and stuff, looking in my direction,
- 56:48Speaker 1: like trying to find me. And I'm like, in my head,
- 56:52Speaker 1: I'm like those people, like she has to smell humans
- 56:57Speaker 1: at that house. There's like there's no doubt they there.
- 57:01Speaker 1: Those people are in their yard. I'm sure they're on
- 57:03Speaker 1: their back deck. Like she's she has smelled people at
- 57:07Speaker 1: that house, yet she's standing there. Are about to blow
- 57:11Speaker 1: at me and blow out of here because she smelled
- 57:13Speaker 1: a human. But the difference was she couldn't find where
- 57:16Speaker 1: I was, and that wasn't normal. So she blew out
- 57:20Speaker 1: of there and was standing next to a house that
- 57:24Speaker 1: has probably covered in human scent, but you know, the
- 57:28Speaker 1: human scent there she's able to identify with that house,
- 57:30Speaker 1: but she's still wind checking me blow, you know, lifting
- 57:34Speaker 1: her nose up in the air, wind checking me, uh
- 57:38Speaker 1: from where I'm hiding in the woods, trying to find
- 57:40Speaker 1: where I'm at because she identified that human smell where
- 57:43Speaker 1: it's not supposed to be. So they're really good at
- 57:51Speaker 1: you know. So my point is that, yes, your your
- 57:54Speaker 1: wind and scent is still super super important in these
- 57:58Speaker 1: urban areas. I do think think there are situations where
- 58:03Speaker 1: dose are potentially more tolerant um if they're around people
- 58:08Speaker 1: a ton, like a ton in parks or whatever. Um.
- 58:14Speaker 1: You know, I've definitely had situations where like a dough
- 58:16Speaker 1: has smelled me and is not cared as much as
- 58:19Speaker 1: like a deer on you know, a thousand acres. But
- 58:23Speaker 1: the vast majority uh, these deer are extremely keen to
- 58:29Speaker 1: human scent where it's coming from. If they can't find it,
- 58:32Speaker 1: they'll blow out of there. It's so interesting how they
- 58:36Speaker 1: can there. There's this threshold that they figure out that
- 58:39Speaker 1: they know it's when it's safe or not. And if
- 58:41Speaker 1: you just seem to cross that line a little bit.
- 58:44Speaker 1: If it's not we're expected, it's uh, it's alarm bells
- 58:47Speaker 1: running fast. And what I've noticed this is for anywhere
- 58:52Speaker 1: that you're hunting. We're we're just hunting Hawaii, and we
- 58:55Speaker 1: were hunting access dear, and we were hiking kind of
- 58:59Speaker 1: in these mountain areas, uh spot and stalking these access
- 59:02Speaker 1: to here, and there's hiking trails. Uh you know that
- 59:06Speaker 1: people go on on occasion, and um, you know, if
- 59:10Speaker 1: we were walking around and stuff, the person we're with
- 59:12Speaker 1: who's hunted there, his entire life is trying to mimic
- 59:16Speaker 1: a walker, a hiker. He's like parking by this bench
- 59:20Speaker 1: his truck by this bench where people parked to picnic
- 59:23Speaker 1: and making noise on purpose and acting like this is
- 59:26Speaker 1: just you know, we're not a hunter. We're just here
- 59:29Speaker 1: on a picnic. We do the same stuff back home,
- 59:32Speaker 1: like you're trying to not act like a predator. So
- 59:35Speaker 1: if I had landed a brand new hunting spot, then
- 59:38Speaker 1: it's November and it's prime time, and I really don't
- 59:41Speaker 1: want to go in there and blow the area out.
- 59:43Speaker 1: I'll walk in there and purposely be having a conversation
- 59:46Speaker 1: with myself. I'll be talking like making noise on purpose.
- 59:52Speaker 1: And if I see a deer, I'm not making eye
- 59:55Speaker 1: contact with him at all. I'm barely even looking at him,
- 59:58Speaker 1: and they'll identify you as like, you know, oh, I've
- 1:00:01Speaker 1: seen this before, as some person that's you know, strolled
- 1:00:04Speaker 1: through the woods that is just exploring or whatever. They'll
- 1:00:07Speaker 1: kind of associate you with like that's just what that was,
- 1:00:11Speaker 1: as opposed to Okay, this person is acting like a predator.
- 1:00:14Speaker 1: They're quiet, they're slipping around, They're paying a lot of
- 1:00:17Speaker 1: attention to me. They're looking at me a lot. You know.
- 1:00:19Speaker 1: I remember one of the biggest year I've ever killed.
- 1:00:23Speaker 1: It was a two inch deear like six or seven
- 1:00:26Speaker 1: years ago, same exact scenario. I got a new spot.
- 1:00:31Speaker 1: The deer went missing, he ran to his rut area,
- 1:00:33Speaker 1: couldn't find him, trying to really locate him. I get
- 1:00:35Speaker 1: a spot. I walked down in this ravine and I'm
- 1:00:38Speaker 1: talking to myself, and he pops up across the ravine
- 1:00:41Speaker 1: like a hundred fifty two hundred yards away, and it's
- 1:00:44Speaker 1: unmistakably him. And instead of sitting there like trying to
- 1:00:48Speaker 1: get pictures or through my binos or anything like that,
- 1:00:50Speaker 1: or paying him any attention. I literally just looked away
- 1:00:55Speaker 1: and walked back up the hill and back up there
- 1:00:57Speaker 1: and just like pretended like I never saw him, paid
- 1:01:00Speaker 1: zero attention, And he didn't give He didn't care at
- 1:01:03Speaker 1: all that he had just had that experience with me.
- 1:01:05Speaker 1: He didn't associate it all with like danger. I think
- 1:01:09Speaker 1: these deer no when you're like paying them attention. Yeah,
- 1:01:13Speaker 1: I think you can take that same kind of approach.
- 1:01:14Speaker 1: You even apply it to you know, farm country or something.
- 1:01:18Speaker 1: But in that case it's you know, the farmer that
- 1:01:20Speaker 1: they're used to, or the dirt bikers or whatever it is.
- 1:01:24Speaker 1: There's different ways you can blend in with what's normal.
- 1:01:27Speaker 1: Just figure out what's the normal thing they're used to
- 1:01:29Speaker 1: use that to your advantage. Alright, Lee, you've made it
- 1:01:34Speaker 1: through the main gauntlet of the what would you do? Trials?
- 1:01:40Speaker 1: But now we've got the rapid fire final round here.
- 1:01:43Speaker 1: I'm just gonna give you a series of quick questions
- 1:01:45Speaker 1: and I'm looking for a one word answer from you,
- 1:01:47Speaker 1: just your gut thought right out the gate. All right,
- 1:01:51Speaker 1: here we go. Number one, does the moon matter to
- 1:01:55Speaker 1: dear movement? Yes? Or no? Yes? Would you take a
- 1:01:58Speaker 1: fifty yards shot at a white tell with your bow
- 1:02:01Speaker 1: yes or no? Yes? If you could only have one
- 1:02:04Speaker 1: of these tools for the rest of your hunt, which
- 1:02:06Speaker 1: would it be rattling anglers or grunt to rattling antlers,
- 1:02:12Speaker 1: expandable or fixed blade broadheads? Oh um, I'm undecided currently?
- 1:02:22Speaker 1: Oh wow? All right? Should you stop a buck that's
- 1:02:27Speaker 1: moving with some kind of sound before shooting with your bow? Yes?
- 1:02:31Speaker 1: Or no? Profitably? Now all right, here's the last one.
- 1:02:35Speaker 1: You can you can give more than a one word answer,
- 1:02:37Speaker 1: or you should give more than a one word answer
- 1:02:39Speaker 1: on this last one. Let's say that I rule the
- 1:02:41Speaker 1: world and I'm going to take away your hunting privileges
- 1:02:44Speaker 1: for the rest of your lifely unless unless you can
- 1:02:48Speaker 1: kill a five year old buck this year, but you
- 1:02:52Speaker 1: only get one day to do it. You get one
- 1:02:55Speaker 1: day to hunt. You can pick any location in any place,
- 1:02:59Speaker 1: in any kind of stand site you want. Tell me
- 1:03:01Speaker 1: the date on the calendar you would choose for this hunt,
- 1:03:04Speaker 1: and describe for me like your perfect scenario for this
- 1:03:07Speaker 1: very high pressure, high stakes hunt. You're gonna tell you location.
- 1:03:13Speaker 1: I mean, you don't need to tell me the specific location,
- 1:03:16Speaker 1: but like I would do this state this kind of
- 1:03:18Speaker 1: spot you know on this date, would you know, whatever
- 1:03:22Speaker 1: date you think would give your best chance. I would
- 1:03:26Speaker 1: go November four, and I would have to go with
- 1:03:35Speaker 1: my bread and butter in Atlanta. Uh, and I would
- 1:03:40Speaker 1: be in hardwoods somewhere around scrapes, scrapes and hard and
- 1:03:47Speaker 1: it would this be like a big chunk of timber
- 1:03:49Speaker 1: that you happen to have, or would it be like
- 1:03:51Speaker 1: a tiny, little focused piece of timber that happens to
- 1:03:54Speaker 1: be just the hot spot? Like, give me a little
- 1:03:56Speaker 1: more detail on what that like ideal scenario would be.
- 1:03:59Speaker 1: It is is Uh, it's it's probably five acres of
- 1:04:05Speaker 1: hardwoods and it funnels out of a much larger, you know,
- 1:04:10Speaker 1: several hundred acre piece of property that cannot be hunted,
- 1:04:14Speaker 1: and they kind of funnel out of that area and
- 1:04:16Speaker 1: kind of funnel into my little five acre ridge. It's
- 1:04:20Speaker 1: like a pinch. So I like areas that pinched her
- 1:04:24Speaker 1: a lot, and this little spot I've got. You know,
- 1:04:28Speaker 1: there's hundreds of wide open acres and they all funnel
- 1:04:32Speaker 1: this little creek in this hardwood ridge into this little
- 1:04:36Speaker 1: area and it puts them, you know, fifty to sixty
- 1:04:41Speaker 1: yards from me coming from It just cuts off a
- 1:04:44Speaker 1: lot of trails they can take. And I'm always looking
- 1:04:48Speaker 1: for really good funnels, So I would say a good
- 1:04:51Speaker 1: hardwood funnel November four with scrapes around. That sounds really good.
- 1:04:58Speaker 1: I like the sounds of it. I feel like I
- 1:05:00Speaker 1: feel good about your chances. Lee. Um, what before I
- 1:05:04Speaker 1: let you go? What? What should people be expecting to
- 1:05:06Speaker 1: see from you guys this year? Where can they follow
- 1:05:09Speaker 1: your content this fall? Um? Anything you want to plug,
- 1:05:11Speaker 1: please let our folks know. Um. Yeah, I mean our
- 1:05:15Speaker 1: channel is uh seek one on YouTube. Um. We are
- 1:05:21Speaker 1: going to be getting content out really quick this year.
- 1:05:24Speaker 1: We're traveling to a lot of new places, places we
- 1:05:27Speaker 1: haven't been. Um, we're branching out. We're sticking to our
- 1:05:32Speaker 1: bread and butter, which is the urban game, the door
- 1:05:34Speaker 1: knocking game. UM, but we are branching outside of that
- 1:05:38Speaker 1: this year with uh, you know, some bigger woods hunts. Uh.
- 1:05:44Speaker 1: I've drew some tags in Kansas. I'm gonna knock on
- 1:05:46Speaker 1: some farmers doors out there, going to North Dakota doing
- 1:05:50Speaker 1: the same thing up there, getting different experiences and uh,
- 1:05:53Speaker 1: you know, wanting to challenge ourselves in different environments. UM.
- 1:05:57Speaker 1: I'll probably be posting most of my stuff on my
- 1:06:00Speaker 1: personal Instagram. Um, I've made this name when I was
- 1:06:05Speaker 1: sixteen year or like fourteen fifteen years old in high school,
- 1:06:08Speaker 1: and I just I should have changed it, but I
- 1:06:10Speaker 1: never did. People as people ask me all the time
- 1:06:13Speaker 1: about that, I'm like, dude, I don't know. I like
- 1:06:14Speaker 1: I made the name and when I was fourteen years old,
- 1:06:17Speaker 1: and I just at some point it was too late
- 1:06:19Speaker 1: and I just never changed it. It's the underscore. Roy
- 1:06:22Speaker 1: is my personal one, and then Sequin Productions is our
- 1:06:27Speaker 1: kind of homepage on Instagram as well. So I gotta ask,
- 1:06:32Speaker 1: is the Northern Buck Hunt? Is that something you're gonna
- 1:06:34Speaker 1: be sharing updates throughout the year or you're gonna keep
- 1:06:37Speaker 1: it quiet till it's all said and done and then
- 1:06:38Speaker 1: we'll find out what happened. To be honest, I was,
- 1:06:41Speaker 1: I was going to, uh, you know, try to. I
- 1:06:46Speaker 1: like to. I like to share my stuff, like you know,
- 1:06:49Speaker 1: I want to keep people like take them along for
- 1:06:52Speaker 1: the ride. So I'm gonna be posting updates on my
- 1:06:55Speaker 1: probably my personal Instagram, um kind of throughout that Ernie.
- 1:07:00Speaker 1: But I've also been sort of coming across the thought
- 1:07:04Speaker 1: process of this, dear is such next level. I might
- 1:07:07Speaker 1: just go dark until it's done. I don't know. Yeah,
- 1:07:10Speaker 1: I wouldn't. I wouldn't blame you. I get that we'll
- 1:07:14Speaker 1: see well. I will be crossing all my fingers and
- 1:07:17Speaker 1: toes and uh, hopefully we can have another chat like
- 1:07:20Speaker 1: this after it's all set and down and have a
- 1:07:22Speaker 1: good story to tell. So one last thing, uh, And
- 1:07:26Speaker 1: the reason I'm bring it up is I'm actually headed
- 1:07:28Speaker 1: there right after we hang up, for the sake of
- 1:07:31Speaker 1: flying under the radar from the Karen's and stuff in
- 1:07:35Speaker 1: these neighborhoods. I've actually I bought a very used and
- 1:07:40Speaker 1: beat up Honda Element at a car auction. I'm a
- 1:07:46Speaker 1: slap a Hello Kitty sticker on the back window, and
- 1:07:50Speaker 1: I promise you that no one's gonna look at that
- 1:07:52Speaker 1: vehicle and think, yeah, that dude's hunting back. There is genius.
- 1:07:57Speaker 1: That is genius. Well if I run, uh huh, Well,
- 1:08:03Speaker 1: good luck, man. I hope it comes together for I
- 1:08:05Speaker 1: appreciate taking time to chat through the stuff. If you
- 1:08:08Speaker 1: want to come to Atlanta, man, you gotta open invite.
- 1:08:10Speaker 1: If you want to revisit that urban, that urban hunt,
- 1:08:12Speaker 1: I feel like I need to at some point. I've
- 1:08:15Speaker 1: gotta I've got to get that monkey off my back,
- 1:08:17Speaker 1: so I'll have to find time to make it happen. Yeah,
- 1:08:20Speaker 1: let's do it, alright, Lee, thanks again. I have a
- 1:08:22Speaker 1: good one. Yeah. See a man all right and that
- 1:08:25Speaker 1: is a rap. Definitely go check out what Lee's got
- 1:08:28Speaker 1: cooking over at the SEQ one YouTube channel. Follow along.
- 1:08:31Speaker 1: I'm excited to see how this season goes for him.
- 1:08:34Speaker 1: So with out of the way, thank you for listening,
- 1:08:37Speaker 1: and until next time, stay wired. Don
