SPEAKER_00: something we really haven't touched on a lot yet on the podcast,

SPEAKER_00: We really haven't spent much time talking about aspect patterns.

SPEAKER_00: We have discussed all of the major aspects like trines, sextiles, squares, oppositions, and conjunctions.

SPEAKER_00: We've also talked about some of the more

SPEAKER_00: minor aspects like the quincunxes and semisextiles.

SPEAKER_00: And that's a good thing because all of that knowledge is going to set you up nicely

SPEAKER_00: to better understand what we're talking about in this episode.

SPEAKER_00: Because when we talk about aspect patterns,

SPEAKER_00: we're talking about ways in which individual aspects make connections with others.

SPEAKER_00: other aspects in your chart to form a geometric shape.

SPEAKER_00: This happens often when one single planet is forming more than one aspect because

SPEAKER_00: planets can be in different aspects with more than one planet at a time,

SPEAKER_00: Mercury in a trine with Saturn to its left,

SPEAKER_00: but it's also forming a different trine with Pluto to its right.

SPEAKER_00: It's forming different trines in each direction.

SPEAKER_00: And because of the way trines work,

SPEAKER_00: that's likely going to mean that Saturn and Pluto are also forming their own trine

SPEAKER_00: with one another,

SPEAKER_00: a Saturn-Pluto trine.

SPEAKER_00: And so now you have three separate trines that are all connected, forming one big triangle.

SPEAKER_00: And of course, we call that a gram tribe.

SPEAKER_00: So looking at aspect patterns is about taking a step back from the individual

SPEAKER_00: aspects all by themselves and not simply looking at every individual colored line

SPEAKER_00: but stepping back to see if some of those lines,

SPEAKER_00: And if that sounds confusing, then hopefully things will become clearer as we go.

SPEAKER_00: Getting down to business now, let's talk about the definition of an aspect pattern in a more formal way.

SPEAKER_00: An aspect pattern is when multiple planets and really it's like three or more

SPEAKER_00: planets that are all connected to one another through the aspects they make.

SPEAKER_00: And as I just said a second ago, they form a geometric shape through their aspects.

SPEAKER_00: So some of those colored lines that you see in your chart,

SPEAKER_00: those aspect lines,

SPEAKER_00: might form a shape if you have one of these patterns.

SPEAKER_00: And not everyone does, by the way.

SPEAKER_00: We do not all have aspect patterns in our charts, but many of us do.

SPEAKER_00: But what they do,

SPEAKER_00: what that shape will do,

SPEAKER_00: is create like an energy pattern where all of that energy is going to get directed

SPEAKER_00: in a certain type of way,

SPEAKER_00: depending on the type of shape we're talking about.

SPEAKER_00: The energy of the aspects involved is going to be harnessed or focused in a certain fashion.

SPEAKER_00: And the shape will tend to work as a unit.

SPEAKER_00: That's true both in terms of your personality and life experience when there's an

SPEAKER_00: aspect pattern in your natal chart,

SPEAKER_00: and in terms of the transits that activate those planets as the transit planets

SPEAKER_00: move around the wheel for your entire life.

SPEAKER_00: A transit to one of the planets in the shape can tend to activate the whole unit

SPEAKER_00: because they're all connected.

SPEAKER_00: And of course,

SPEAKER_00: these shapes or aspect patterns can make things either easier for you or more

SPEAKER_00: challenging for you,

SPEAKER_00: depending on the type of shape that it is.

SPEAKER_00: Some aspect patterns are considered to be easy, and some are considered to be challenging.

SPEAKER_00: Although, as I always say, everything in astrology has light and shadow.

SPEAKER_00: Everything has pros and cons.

SPEAKER_00: Everything brings gifts and challenges with it.

SPEAKER_00: There is no all good or all bad in astrology.

SPEAKER_00: So we're going to start with some of the more common and basic aspect patterns today.

SPEAKER_00: There actually are quite a few aspect patterns out there.

SPEAKER_00: We won't cover them all today, just some of the more commonly talked about ones for right now.

SPEAKER_00: And then we'll cover more in another episode.

SPEAKER_00: Some of them are pretty rare, but it's a good idea to know the basic ones.

SPEAKER_00: Okay, let's start by talking about stelliums.

SPEAKER_00: Even though they aren't a shape per se, they still are considered an aspect pattern.

SPEAKER_00: What a stellium is,

SPEAKER_00: is just a group of planets,

SPEAKER_00: a cluster of planets,

SPEAKER_00: three or more typically,

SPEAKER_00: that are in the same sign or the same house.

SPEAKER_00: You can have sign stelliums, like say a Leo stellium or a Capricorn stellium.

SPEAKER_00: Or house stelliums, like say a fourth house stellium.

SPEAKER_00: If they happen to be in the same sign and the same house, that's especially meaningful, I think.

SPEAKER_00: Like say three or more planets in Leo and in the fourth house.

SPEAKER_00: That could be especially potent.

SPEAKER_00: But a stellium is a cluster of planets, more than a shape.

SPEAKER_00: These planets may or may not be forming conjunctions with one another.

SPEAKER_00: They don't have to be close enough to form conjunctions.

SPEAKER_00: They just have to be in the same sign or the same house if you're talking about houses.

SPEAKER_00: And what they do,

SPEAKER_00: what a stellium does,

SPEAKER_00: is simply direct a ton of energy and focus on the sign or house where it is located.

SPEAKER_00: When you have a stellium,

SPEAKER_00: it means that the matters associated with that sign or house are going to be

SPEAKER_00: heavily emphasized in your life.

SPEAKER_00: There's going to be a continual pull for you towards the matters of that sign or house.

SPEAKER_00: You may feel pulled towards those matters internally or because of external events

SPEAKER_00: but probably some combination of both.

SPEAKER_00: So again,

SPEAKER_00: it clusters energy in that area of your life and around life experiences and

SPEAKER_00: lessons that pertain to those things.

SPEAKER_00: this is interesting,

SPEAKER_00: if you have a stellium,

SPEAKER_00: you might think or behave a lot like the sign that that stellium is in.

SPEAKER_00: even if that sign isn't one of your big three, because there's just so much energy clustered there.

SPEAKER_00: You might actually take on a lot of those personality traits.

SPEAKER_00: You might vibe with that energy a lot.

SPEAKER_00: And sometimes other people can see that energy in you strongly too.

SPEAKER_00: So that stellium energy is going to be a really important part of who you are,

SPEAKER_00: how you operate,

SPEAKER_00: and how you see the world.

SPEAKER_00: Okay, so let's talk a bit about the T-square now.

SPEAKER_00: Lots of people have this one.

SPEAKER_00: It's fairly common.

SPEAKER_00: The T-square is an aspect pattern that occurs when you have an opposition in your chart.

SPEAKER_00: So two planets opposite one another,

SPEAKER_00: and then there is another planet,

SPEAKER_00: a third planet,
9:16
SPEAKER_00: at the halfway point on the wheel between those two opposing planets.

SPEAKER_00: So that this third planet is also forming squares with each planet in the opposition.

SPEAKER_00: And again, it really helps to look at the handout here.

SPEAKER_00: So in the handout I provided,

SPEAKER_00: you can see that this chart has the Moon and Aquarius opposing Saturn and Leo,

SPEAKER_00: That's the opposition.

SPEAKER_00: Then about halfway in between that opposition on the wheel,

SPEAKER_00: you have a Pluto-Mercury conjunction in Taurus.

SPEAKER_00: And that Pluto and Mercury conjunction,

SPEAKER_00: and because it's a conjunction,

SPEAKER_00: we're going to treat Pluto and Mercury as if it's a single unit here for this conversation.

SPEAKER_00: Pluto and Mercury are forming squares with the moon on one side.

SPEAKER_00: and with Saturn to the other side.

SPEAKER_00: So you have the two planets in opposition,

SPEAKER_00: and each of those planets is also forming a square with the planet or planets in

SPEAKER_00: this case at the apex or the midpoint of that opposition.

SPEAKER_00: Pluto-Mercury is the apex of this T-square.

SPEAKER_00: And in lots of software programs, this is going to look like a big red triangle.

SPEAKER_00: Okay, that's what it looks like.

SPEAKER_00: What it indicates energetically is tension and stress, but it's also a really dynamic energy.

SPEAKER_00: Remember that we need some red lines.

SPEAKER_00: We need some tension in our chart typically to help us stay motivated and to get us off the couch.

SPEAKER_00: It can show up in the form of challenges or obstacles in our lives that need some

SPEAKER_00: problem solving,

SPEAKER_00: right?

SPEAKER_00: The planets that are involved in all three points of this aspect tend to function

SPEAKER_00: in such a way that they're in conflict with one another or experiencing some kind

SPEAKER_00: of friction.

SPEAKER_00: This creates tension and stress for a person.

SPEAKER_00: It often represents issues, behavior, obstacles that need to be problem solved.

SPEAKER_00: This can generate enormous creative friction that gives energy and drive and

SPEAKER_00: motivation to our goals and ambitions in life.

SPEAKER_00: Sometimes you might hear of this aspect pattern being called an achievement

SPEAKER_00: triangle because they encourage us to work hard to make things happen.

SPEAKER_00: The apex,

SPEAKER_00: by the way,
11:49
SPEAKER_00: is where all that energy,

SPEAKER_00: where all that dynamism,

SPEAKER_00: all that tension,
11:54
SPEAKER_00: all that friction,

SPEAKER_00: it's where all of that is going to get directed towards.

SPEAKER_00: The apex planet is kind of like a release valve.

SPEAKER_00: All that tension from the T-square ultimately gets expressed through that planet and its placement.

SPEAKER_00: So let me think of an example.

SPEAKER_00: Let's say you have a T-square with Mars opposing Pluto.

SPEAKER_00: That can be pretty explosive energy.

SPEAKER_00: That's like a warrior and a general vying for control or a soldier and a general vying for control.

SPEAKER_00: And that's going to possibly lead to a lot of tumultuous or explosive feelings or thoughts or actions.

SPEAKER_00: This person may struggle with challenges around control or being controlled.

SPEAKER_00: Maybe this person's kind of a fighter.

SPEAKER_00: Again, that can be used for good or bad.

SPEAKER_00: Advocacy might be good.

SPEAKER_00: Abuse would be not good.

SPEAKER_00: But it's going to likely be about power dynamics that show up again and again in the person's life.

SPEAKER_00: And that's going to create a tremendous amount of tension back and forth between those planets.

SPEAKER_00: Now, if you have, let's say, Mercury...

SPEAKER_00: in the apex of this T-square here, then this tension gets funneled towards Mercury.

SPEAKER_00: The release valve for this tension is the planet of thinking and, importantly, communication.

SPEAKER_00: So I think I would be concerned with this aspect in a less aware person.

SPEAKER_00: I might be concerned about someone having the potential to become verbally abusive

SPEAKER_00: with this thing going on.

SPEAKER_00: That's not at all to say this would definitely happen.

SPEAKER_00: Again, all aspects can be used constructively or unconstructively.

SPEAKER_00: But if this person is operating in a way that lacks self-awareness,

SPEAKER_00: the energy is there to make that kind of thing possible.

SPEAKER_00: Because you have the struggle around control and power dynamics.

SPEAKER_00: And, you know, the darker version of Pluto can lead to things like manipulation.

SPEAKER_00: And the darker side of Mars can be aggression.

SPEAKER_00: And they're opposed.

SPEAKER_00: And that tension would be getting funneled towards a person's planet of communication.

SPEAKER_00: So it could show up as aggressive communication that could cause harm, perhaps.

SPEAKER_00: That's Mars.

SPEAKER_00: Or a communication style that serves to control or...

SPEAKER_00: manipulate.

SPEAKER_00: That could be Pluto.

SPEAKER_00: Now,

SPEAKER_00: in a more self-aware person who is very thoughtful about how they communicate,

SPEAKER_00: they can overcome this and find ways to become assertive,

SPEAKER_00: direct communicators in a way that's healthy and productive.

SPEAKER_00: And because Pluto's involved,

SPEAKER_00: they could have an ability to be really transformative in their communications.

SPEAKER_00: They can use their direct, assertive communication style to create transformation.

SPEAKER_00: They could be great advocates for a cause, even.

SPEAKER_00: It could end up a strength.

SPEAKER_00: But it's going to depend on the person.

SPEAKER_00: It will depend on what else is in their chart.

SPEAKER_00: It will depend on who they are and the choices they make.

SPEAKER_00: This is kind of an extreme example because I brought in Mars and Pluto.

SPEAKER_00: Not all T-squares are going to be as extreme in their energies.

SPEAKER_00: Now the next aspect pattern I want to talk about is the Grand Cross.

SPEAKER_00: This is an aspect pattern formed by four planets that are each about 90 degrees

SPEAKER_00: away from each other on the wheel.

SPEAKER_00: so that they connect with one another and create a large square.

SPEAKER_00: And of course,

SPEAKER_00: squares being what they are,
15:52
SPEAKER_00: each of the four planets is also going to be opposite one of the other planets.

SPEAKER_00: So you have four squares and two oppositions that form a cross configuration.

SPEAKER_00: This aspect pattern is typically considered the most intense because it's all oppositions and squares.

SPEAKER_00: Again, you'll definitely want to look at the handout to see what it is that I'm talking about.

SPEAKER_00: So it's very intense.

SPEAKER_00: There's lots and lots of energy, lots of friction, lots of stress, frankly.

SPEAKER_00: It functions kind of like a pressure cooker.

SPEAKER_00: And unlike T-squares, there's really no single apex.

SPEAKER_00: It's kind of just this closed circuit of energy that can go round and round and

SPEAKER_00: round in a perpetual state of motion and in a perpetual state of energy.

SPEAKER_00: So it can be hard.

SPEAKER_00: But it's also extremely dynamic and very, very motivating.

SPEAKER_00: There's lots of energy available to get things done.

SPEAKER_00: This pattern does not encourage idleness.

SPEAKER_00: And if anything, someone with this configuration may have a hard time resting or relaxing.

SPEAKER_00: That might be out of the question.

SPEAKER_00: On the one hand, its energy can be used to work really hard in some area or another.

SPEAKER_00: And if used well, it can help you achieve a great deal.

SPEAKER_00: And it's tenacious.

SPEAKER_00: It can really help you go the distance if that's what's needed.

SPEAKER_00: But if not used well,

SPEAKER_00: sometimes there's this tendency to sort of keep spinning your wheels and not feel

SPEAKER_00: like you're making progress.

SPEAKER_00: So frustration can be common.

SPEAKER_00: And of course, you know, we don't tend to enjoy difficulty and frustration, right?

SPEAKER_00: We're humans.

SPEAKER_00: We want things to be easy.

SPEAKER_00: But we do need a certain amount of it in our lives because difficulty is a driver of action.

SPEAKER_00: We tend to only take on challenges or become willing to do really hard work if

SPEAKER_00: there's something in our lives that's frustrating that we want to change so we can

SPEAKER_00: make our lives better or easier.

SPEAKER_00: That's a big motivating factor for a lot of what humans do.

SPEAKER_00: No challenges equals not a lot of action and not much hard work.

SPEAKER_00: And so here you've got four of these squares basically creating a box.

SPEAKER_00: It's a closed system or a closed energy loop where all that tension just keeps

SPEAKER_00: going and going and going from one planet to the next.

SPEAKER_00: So life can tend to look like a series of challenges or sometimes even crises for

SPEAKER_00: someone with this aspect pattern.

SPEAKER_00: Some of that challenge comes from outside circumstances that are hoisted upon them.

SPEAKER_00: And some of this could come from within,

SPEAKER_00: from their perceptions or their attitudes or their beliefs or,

SPEAKER_00: you know,

SPEAKER_00: other internal factors.

SPEAKER_00: I want to point out that it does not mean that you're doomed if you have this

SPEAKER_00: aspect pattern in your chart or anything you don't like in your chart.

SPEAKER_00: Please, please, please do not think that.

SPEAKER_00: I don't really think of much of anything in astrology as spelling doom.

SPEAKER_00: It doesn't mean you're doomed or that your life won't be happy or any of that.

SPEAKER_00: What it does mean...

SPEAKER_00: is that you signed up before you got here for a certain set of challenges that you

SPEAKER_00: needed to work through in order to evolve.

SPEAKER_00: We all do that in different ways.

SPEAKER_00: But this aspect pattern is meant to give you the lessons you needed to evolve in

SPEAKER_00: the direction spiritually that you wanted to go in.

SPEAKER_00: And we,

SPEAKER_00: as humans,

SPEAKER_00: can become self-aware and meet our challenges and our lessons successfully or not

SPEAKER_00: if we refuse self-awareness or resist the lessons that we keep getting.

SPEAKER_00: And, you know, if you have this aspect, you may be someone who isn't afraid to be challenged anyway.

SPEAKER_00: Lots of people with this aspect pattern tend to seek out challenges on purpose

SPEAKER_00: because they need somewhere to direct all that square energy.

SPEAKER_00: So you might actually feel more okay with being challenged than other people might sometimes.

SPEAKER_00: And the last thing I'll say about this,

SPEAKER_00: actually this can apply to the T-square too,

SPEAKER_00: because we're talking about right angles with both patterns.

SPEAKER_00: They typically involve planets that are going to be in the same modality.

SPEAKER_00: So they're either cardinal, fixed, or mutable.

SPEAKER_00: And the modality that the pattern is in is going to flavor the experience of the

SPEAKER_00: Grand Cross or the T-square.

SPEAKER_00: So if you have one of these aspect patterns and you have them in cardinal signs, like...

SPEAKER_00: Cancer,

SPEAKER_00: Capricorn,

SPEAKER_00: then this usually will lead someone to being,

SPEAKER_00: really ambitious and goal-driven and often really creative.

SPEAKER_00: Cardinal placements tend to make you want to start a lot of new projects.

SPEAKER_00: You like to look for things that are new and innovative.

SPEAKER_00: But you may not always be so good at follow through.

SPEAKER_00: And people with cardinal placements can also be multitaskers or people with a lot

SPEAKER_00: of different projects going on at once because they're always looking for the next

SPEAKER_00: new thing.

SPEAKER_00: So great at starting things,

SPEAKER_00: super innovative,

SPEAKER_00: but you may need to work on follow through or at least surround yourself with

SPEAKER_00: so that's Taurus,

SPEAKER_00: a person may not be someone who starts new things so much,

SPEAKER_00: but they may be really good at following through and seeing tasks and projects all

SPEAKER_00: And they may not always like the end, by the way.

SPEAKER_00: Fixed energy can make it hard to let go,

SPEAKER_00: and they might dig their heels in and hang on to something for too long,

SPEAKER_00: sign placements and fixed placements can work really well together because you have

SPEAKER_00: someone starting the new thing and then the fixed placements kind of coming in to

SPEAKER_00: do the thing and not give up when things get hard.

SPEAKER_00: the person with this aspect pattern is often very adaptable and flexible,

SPEAKER_00: They may be distracted easily by new events or new information coming in,

SPEAKER_00: It's actually three different trines that connect with one another to form a nice big triangle.

SPEAKER_00: And what that is is going to depend on the planets involved as well as,
