- 0:02Thanks for joining us, on beyond the sermon, the podcast.
- 0:05First Methodist Church in Collingswood New Jersey.
- 0:07Our goal is not only to share our sermons, but to go beyond
- 0:10the sermon in conversation about what we're learning and what God
- 0:14is doing in our lives, and in our community, this sermon comes
- 0:17from our first 2023 sermon series.
- 0:20Speaking with a Wesleyan voice, rediscovering our Methodist
- 0:23tradition for today. You can find out more
- 0:25information about our church fum, see Collingswood dot-org.
- 0:30Argh, thanks for listening. Have you ever?
- 0:36Ever had an experience in you, much you encountered, someone
- 0:40who who based on their outward, appearances fit, the bill of
- 0:45what of what they were supposed to be to a tee, all right?
- 0:49They had the right appearance, they had all the right skills.
- 0:54They had all the mental knowledge.
- 0:56They used all the right words and lingo they're able to
- 1:00navigate through the context properly.
- 1:04There's something just not quite, right?
- 1:08There's something you could just tell something was missing.
- 1:14You can just tell spite all that stuff.
- 1:18They had, right? Their heart wasn't quite in it.
- 1:24There is no passion, no drive, no heart for whatever it was
- 1:30that they were supposed to be doing, never had an experience
- 1:34like that. It could have been any number of
- 1:37settings, it could be Sports, it could be music medicine, really,
- 1:41any area of life, for whatever reason, they've put all this
- 1:46time and effort in to get to that point and you can just
- 1:52sense that their heart isn't in it.
- 1:54It but they keep doing it because of expectations or
- 1:58because of the investment of time and energy they've made in
- 2:01it. Sadly, this can even happen in
- 2:06our Christian faith in this sermon series.
- 2:10We've been looking at what it means to speak with a Wesley and
- 2:14voice today, right? Looking back to John Wesley, the
- 2:17founder of our Methodist tradition which includes our
- 2:21United Methodist Church, but it's not Headed to our United
- 2:25Methodist far. Broader than that, includes
- 2:28denominations like the Free Methodist the nazarenes, the
- 2:32global Methodist Church, the Evangelical Methodist Church
- 2:34etc, etc. There's a lot, right?
- 2:36And that's just to name a few. But we've been looking at the
- 2:41theological Heritage that was passed down to the people called
- 2:45Methodist because I believe that Heritage best interprets the
- 2:50whole message of scripture and the tradition that the church
- 2:54has passed down through the ages.
- 2:58One of the ways that Wesley has sought to to clarify and
- 3:02preserve the beliefs of Methodist was not to write a
- 3:06Systematic Theology, like many theologians do, but to publish a
- 3:10collection of sermons, that exemplified the beliefs and
- 3:15values of the methodists, these sermons, along with Wesley's
- 3:20notes on the New Testament, became the theological
- 3:22Foundation. of the Methodist movement and it was faithfulness
- 3:27to those doctrines that led Wesley to incorporate a trust
- 3:31clause, in the Deeds of the Methodist buildings, as the as
- 3:34the movement, spread to ensure that those buildings would be
- 3:38used to remain faithful to scripture and to Methodist
- 3:43teaching It's been used in other ways recently, but we're not
- 3:46going to get into that. So in one of my Seminary courses
- 3:50on the Theology of John Wesley, we had to read and outline all
- 3:54of Leslie's standard sermons, right?
- 3:58So Wesley publish these. These first in the first
- 4:02collection of these in a book called sermons on several
- 4:06occasions in 1746. And that collection eventually
- 4:10grew to four volumes containing 44 sermon Yes, but in that
- 4:15initial collection, the first sermon in there was entitled
- 4:19salvation by faith. We talked about that towards the
- 4:23beginning of this this sermon series, but the the sermon that
- 4:28came right after that, salvation by faith, sermon was one called
- 4:33The Almost Christian and that sermon that Wesley rotates, the
- 4:38background for my message today. This final sermon in our series,
- 4:43speaking with a SLI in voice. You see, I'm convinced along
- 4:49with Wesley that it's possible to live your life, doing all the
- 4:54right things and knowing all the right things in your head and
- 4:58using all the right words and phrases looking like, you know,
- 5:03what you're doing and miss the heart of the matter, which is
- 5:08the work that God, and God Alone can do in our hearts to
- 5:13reconcile. All you to himself to transform
- 5:16you and to make you holy as he is Holy you can live the outward
- 5:23life of a Christian and still miss the heart of God in your
- 5:29heart. You can still live as an almost
- 5:33Christian. Because as much as Wesley and
- 5:37the methodists defined, a method of living that created space for
- 5:41God to work in You by his grace, that method was always intended
- 5:48to be a means of Grace to us. A means to an end.
- 5:52The result of the work that God was doing in us.
- 5:55It was never meant to be a way for you to earn your salvation
- 6:00or to work toward your own sanctification.
- 6:05So today, before we end this series, I want to talk about
- 6:10what it looks like to be an almost Christian.
- 6:16And then what it looks like, what it means to be an
- 6:19altogether. Christian so first, what's it
- 6:23mean to be an almost Christian on almost Christian, someone
- 6:30who's got the outward signs of a Christian life.
- 6:33But hasn't really internalized, Wesley describes him as people
- 6:39who have a real concern for both truth and Justice.
- 6:44They understand that there's a certain way that we need to live
- 6:47in relationship with one another in society, right?
- 6:51We can't lie to one another, we can't steal from each other.
- 6:54We can't cheat our neighbors. We can't do any of those things.
- 7:00The almost Christian expects to love and help one another.
- 7:06They know that people are meant to give to the needy to give
- 7:09assistance where and when they're able.
- 7:13And so, when we hear this kind of idea, shared, when we, when
- 7:18people speak about someone being a good person, right?
- 7:23They don't do the things. They know they shouldn't do, and
- 7:26they do the things then they know they I do.
- 7:30But friends, being a good person doesn't make you a Christian.
- 7:37But the old most Christian also has what Wesley calls a form of
- 7:41godliness that is they have a level of Conformity to biblical
- 7:47standards. They don't use the Nate lord's
- 7:49name in vain. They don't work on the Sabbath.
- 7:52They stay away from unwholesome, talk like cursing and gossip and
- 7:57course, joking. They don't get drunk or live.
- 8:01The party life and they live at peace with other people living.
- 8:07According to that, Golden Rule that says, do unto others, as
- 8:11you would have them do unto you. And in living in this way, they
- 8:16don't just avoid doing harm to people.
- 8:19They actually work for the good of other people even to the
- 8:23point of sacrificing of giving up of themselves.
- 8:26In order to help they work hard for good causes.
- 8:32Those who are almost Christians. Also participate in the life of
- 8:37the church. They participate in the means of
- 8:41Grace, which we spoke about a few weeks ago, they're active
- 8:45and worship they practice family prayer at home.
- 8:49They receive the Lord's Supper. They even seek God, sincerely.
- 8:57but the problem is the motivation with which they
- 9:00participate in all these outward actions and attitude comes from
- 9:05a desire to avoid punishment that he'll sermon the Hellfire
- 9:14and Damnation that Lorraine was talking about, they want to
- 9:16avoid that. Where they desire to gain some
- 9:21kind of reward or a reputation. But the almost Christian is
- 9:27sincere. They desire to serve God, even
- 9:31if the motivation might need some correction Wesley says he
- 9:37understands all this about the almost Christian.
- 9:40Not just because he's seen, it lived out in other people's
- 9:43lives but because he himself lived that way for so long.
- 9:48He gives this testimony said I went like this for many years.
- 9:53As many here can testify using Diligence to avoid all evil and
- 9:59to have a conscience void of offence.
- 10:02Redeeming the time buying up every opportunity of doing good
- 10:05to all men, constantly and carefully using all the public,
- 10:08and private means of Grace endeavoring after a steady,
- 10:12seriousness of behavior at all times.
- 10:14And in all places, and God, as my record before, whom I stand
- 10:18doing all this insincerity, having a real design to serve
- 10:22God, a hearty desire to do, his will, in all things too.
- 10:25Please him who had called me to fight the good fight and to lay
- 10:29hold of eternal life. Sounds pretty good, doesn't it?
- 10:35He said yet my own conscience Bears witness in the holy
- 10:38spirit. That all this time.
- 10:40I was almost a Christian see Wesley recognize that even in
- 10:46his own life that there's a difference, a dividing line
- 10:51between being almost a Christian and being altogether, a
- 10:56Christian. And I think that's what James is
- 11:00talking about here in this passage from James chapter 1,
- 11:04the Jeremy read for us, James says, that we can even deceive
- 11:11ourselves thinking that were following Jesus, but missing the
- 11:15point of what following Jesus looks like.
- 11:20James is coming at it from the other side from Wesley saying
- 11:23that if we're really religious if we're really Walking with God
- 11:28then our lives ought to look a certain way.
- 11:31There are certain better ought to be certain things that are
- 11:35fruit in our lives. We're going to live in certain
- 11:39ways, we can't just listen to the word.
- 11:44We've got to be doers of the word.
- 11:47So while Wesley is saying that we act like Like it's saying we
- 11:51act like a Christian but might still be almost a Christian.
- 11:55James is saying, we can't be a Christian and not do the things
- 11:58that a Christian is called to do.
- 12:01So what does it take to move us from being an almost Christian
- 12:07to being an altogether, Christian, what changed for John
- 12:11that night on Aldersgate Street, what set him on fire and
- 12:15reoriented his heart? You see the altogether
- 12:20Christian? Is someone who loves God,
- 12:25wholeheartedly, their heart has been so filled with God's love
- 12:30that. It drives out the desire for
- 12:32things that don't come from God, because that person has been
- 12:36crucified to the world and Made Alive to God.
- 12:41Wesley would often speak about how God's love can be shed
- 12:45abroad in our hearts. By the Holy Spirit or is The New
- 12:49International Version, puts it? God, God's love has been poured
- 12:54into our hearts through the Holy Spirit.
- 12:59So an altogether Christian, loves God wholeheartedly.
- 13:04And this wholehearted love for God, doesn't stop with God.
- 13:09It becomes a love for others. A love that looks like the love
- 13:14that Paul described in the thirteenth chapter of First
- 13:17Corinthians when he said love is patient.
- 13:21Love is kind. It does not envy.
- 13:24It does not boast. It is not proud.
- 13:28It is not rude. It is not self-seeking, it is
- 13:31not easily angered. It keeps no account of wrongs,
- 13:34Love Takes no pleasure in evil, but rejoices in the truth, it
- 13:38Bears. All things believes all things,
- 13:41hopes all things and endures all things love never fails.
- 13:50That's the kind of love that God wants to pour into our hearts.
- 13:56That's the kind of love that God wants to love other people in
- 14:00the world through us. But there's another thing that's
- 14:07needed to be an altogether Christian, which is at the same
- 14:12time, separate from the love of God and neighbor, but also in
- 14:16separable, and that is faith. You see, you must believe that
- 14:22Jesus is the son of God and that in Jesus death.
- 14:27And Resurrection, you can be reconciled to God adopted into
- 14:31his family and this isn't just a general faith that believes
- 14:36those things are true generically right.
- 14:39It's faith that God loves you. That Jesus died for you.
- 14:46That in Jesus's resurrection, you can be raised to New Life
- 14:51that the Holy Spirit can dwell in you and make you holy and
- 14:58holy his. It's not just a faith that gives
- 15:02a sent to a head level knowledge about God as James says, later
- 15:08in his letter, even the demons believe that God is God and they
- 15:13tremble. But they're still demons.
- 15:17It's a faith. That leads to repentance.
- 15:21Love and good works. Wesley described this kind of
- 15:26Faith like this. He said the true and right
- 15:29Christian faith is not only to believe that Holy Scripture and
- 15:33the articles of our faith are true.
- 15:36But also to have a sure trust a confidence to be saved from
- 15:41Everlasting damnation by Christ. It is a short rust and
- 15:45confidence which a man has in God.
- 15:48That by the merits of Christ, his sins are forgiven and he is
- 15:53reconciled to the favor of God. We're of death, follow a loving
- 15:59heart to obey God's Commandments.
- 16:03This is the kind of faith that purifies us and fills us with
- 16:07the love, which comes from The God Who first loved us.
- 16:13This is that line, that makes all the difference.
- 16:18This is the line between being a Christian outwardly and being
- 16:22one in release. The line between being almost a
- 16:25Christian and an altogether Christian.
- 16:30So friends. Where are you this morning?
- 16:34Which side of this line? Do you find yourself on?
- 16:40Are you just going through the motions?
- 16:45Are you full of good desires and intentions?
- 16:49But find that your motive for trying to live christianly is
- 16:53more about trying to earn God's love, then living out of God's
- 16:58love. Is your motive, despite your
- 17:02sincerity trying to avoid the punishment, you know, you
- 17:06deserve. The road to hell.
- 17:09They say is paved with good intentions.
- 17:14This morning has the love of God, been poured into your
- 17:17heart. Is he the one thing you desire?
- 17:23Is love your neighbor as yourself, not just a command
- 17:26written down in scripture, but a commandment written on your
- 17:30heart. Do you believe and know in your
- 17:34heart? That because of his great love
- 17:37for us, Christ died for you. Forgiving, you and all who
- 17:43repent and turn to him, that you have been adopted into gods,
- 17:48family, and been made a son or a daughter.
- 17:52If so praise God, praise God. But if not, if you've been
- 17:58living the life of an almost Christian that we've described
- 18:03here today or maybe you're not even there maybe today you'd say
- 18:07you're not at all a Christian. Almost Christian or not at all a
- 18:12Christian today, can be the day that you're Justified freely by
- 18:17his grace, today can be the day, you're Redeemed by his blood
- 18:24today, can be the day. You can know in your heart that
- 18:27you are at peace with God, today can be the day.
- 18:33That the Holy Spirit can poor God's love into your heart.
- 18:39Today can be the day. You become an altogether,
- 18:43Christian, So Aaron and the team are going to come, and we're
- 18:50going to sing Graves into Gardens to close our service.
- 18:56And I want to ask each one of you to take a moment to check
- 19:01your own heart to evaluate, where you really are this
- 19:06morning. And if you have peace, that that
- 19:10you are an altogether Christian. This morning, I want you to pray
- 19:13for those in this room or watching online or or other
- 19:17people, you know, who need to be honest with themselves.
- 19:21And with God about what they need him to do in their lives.
- 19:26Lives. If you've been living as an
- 19:28almost Christian, I want to encourage you to take all that
- 19:31head knowledge, and all the good things you've been doing and lay
- 19:34them down before, God and ask him, to give you the gift of
- 19:40faith, and invite him to pour his love into your heart. and if
- 19:46you're not living as a Christian today, So, I'm not naive enough
- 19:51to believe that in a room, this size.
- 19:54There are some people who haven't yet given their hearts,
- 19:57to Jesus. If you're not a Christian today,
- 20:01I want to invite you to pray, until God, you're ready to be
- 20:05done living for yourself. And that you want to live for
- 20:09him and ask him to give you the faith to believe that he loves
- 20:14you enough to die for you, the faith that leads you to turn
- 20:17away from your sin and yourself and turn to God.
- 20:22As we sing. If you want to come and pray at
- 20:25the altar, you're welcome, whether you're coming to seek
- 20:28God for yourself or you're coming to pray on behalf of
- 20:31others. When people come to pray,
- 20:34there's no judgment. We all stand before God on level
- 20:40ground. You want someone to come and
- 20:42pray with you or for you. Nothing would make me happier
- 20:47this morning. So if you're able, will you
- 20:50stand as we sing and take time to respond, to the work, God is
- 20:56doing in our hearts. The Eagles on play at one.
- 21:01They don't play till 6:30. We got plenty of time.
- 21:06But let's take a minute to invite God to search our hearts,
- 21:10to respond to what he's doing in US.
