- 0:09In our last episode, we walked through the ashes.
- 0:13We followed the fire at Mount Carmel to its aftermath.
- 0:16The recovery of the bodies, the congressional
- 0:18hearings, the trials of the survivors, and the
- 0:21explosive legacy of Waco that still shakes American
- 0:23culture today. We saw how a standoff became a
- 0:26symbol, how a tragedy became a rallying cry,
- 0:29and how the fire didn't extinguish the message,
- 0:32it amplified it. But what was that message? What
- 0:35did David Koresh actually believe? What did he
- 0:39teach behind closed doors? What scriptures did
- 0:41he use to bind people to his will and why did
- 0:44those teachings hold such incredible power? Today
- 0:47we step inside the gospel according to Koresh
- 0:51Not to sensationalize it but to understand it
- 0:54because only by understanding what he believed
- 0:57Can we understand why people followed and why
- 0:59so many never walked away? I'm Rick Welch and
- 1:03this is Prophet of Fire David Koresh was many
- 1:07things to many people, cult leader, predator,
- 1:10prophet. But to understand how he commanded such
- 1:13loyalty, we have to understand what he believed
- 1:15and what he taught. Because Koresh didn't invent
- 1:18charisma, he built it on the back of a message.
- 1:22A message born in scripture. Koresh's teachings
- 1:26were rooted almost entirely in the Book of Revelation,
- 1:29the final and most cryptic chapter of the Christian
- 1:31Bible, but he didn't just read it, he lived in
- 1:34it. To Quresh, Revelation wasn't prophecy waiting
- 1:38to happen. It was already happening, right there
- 1:41in Waco. The cornerstone of his theology was
- 1:45Revelation 5. Quote, then I saw in the right
- 1:48hand of him who sat on the throne a scroll, sealed
- 1:51with seven seals, and I saw a lamb standing as
- 1:54though it had been slain. End quote. Most Christians
- 1:58interpret that lamb as Jesus Christ. Quresh didn't.
- 2:02He said the lamb was someone else. someone chosen
- 2:05to reveal Christ by unlocking the seven seals.
- 2:08And that someone was him. Quote, the lamb's job
- 2:13is to open the book, to interpret what no man
- 2:16can understand. That's what I'm doing. That's
- 2:19what I was born for. End quote. Koresh taught
- 2:23that the seven seals were spiritual codes, a
- 2:26divine sequence of judgment and revelation that,
- 2:28once unlocked, would prepare the world for the
- 2:31second coming. He said only the lamb had the
- 2:34authority to interpret them, not a pastor, not
- 2:37a pope, not even Jesus, because Jesus was the
- 2:41book. In this logic, Quresh positioned himself
- 2:44as the interpreter of the divine, not God, not
- 2:47Christ, but the man who stood in the gap between
- 2:50heaven and earth. This wasn't just clever theology,
- 2:53it was intoxicating. For people disillusioned
- 2:56with mainstream Christianity, Quresh offered
- 2:59something radical. a living prophet who could
- 3:01make the end times make sense. He taught that
- 3:04the United States was modern day Babylon, that
- 3:06the government, media, and religious establishment
- 3:09were all part of a system destined for divine
- 3:11judgment. And Mount Carmel? That was Zion, a
- 3:15spiritual fortress, the only place where God's
- 3:17new kingdom would be revealed. To those inside,
- 3:21this wasn't metaphor. They were living in the
- 3:23Book of Revelation. Every news report, every
- 3:27federal visit, every crisis, Koresh wove it all
- 3:30back into prophecy, even the 1993 siege. He called
- 3:34it the fifth seal, quote, I saw under the altar
- 3:37the souls of those who had been slain for the
- 3:39word of God, end quote. He told them they were
- 3:43those souls. His theology wasn't all doom. There
- 3:47was a promise, too. Revelation 14 spoke of 144
- 3:51,000 servants of God marked with his name. Koresh
- 3:55believed he was building the foundation of that
- 3:57group and his followers, especially the children,
- 4:00were destined to be among them. Survivor Sheila
- 4:02Martin remembers, quote, He said our children
- 4:05were holy, that they'd lead the armies of heaven,
- 4:08that we had to prepare them for that day, end
- 4:11quote. This was the draw. Not just that the end
- 4:15was coming, but that you had a role in it, that
- 4:18your suffering meant something. Koresh gave people
- 4:21the ultimate gift of purpose. crafted straight
- 4:23from Scripture. But Koresh didn't stop at Revelation.
- 4:27He connected his teachings to Daniel's apocalyptic
- 4:29visions, to the Song of Solomon, even to obscure
- 4:32genealogies from Chronicles arguing that he was
- 4:35restoring the fallen House of David. To scholars,
- 4:39it was theological patchwork. To his followers,
- 4:42it was divine insight. Scripture wasn't just
- 4:45a text in Koresh's hands. It was a weapon, a
- 4:48blueprint, a mirror. and he used it to build
- 4:51something no one else dared, a belief system
- 4:54where he was the only voice that mattered, and
- 4:56the only one who could lead them through the
- 4:58end. To most Christians, the Lamb in Revelation
- 5:01represents Jesus Christ, sacrificed, resurrected,
- 5:05glorified. But David Koresh told a different
- 5:07story. In his reading, Jesus was the Book itself.
- 5:11The Lamb was someone new, someone raised up in
- 5:14the last days to reveal Christ fully, seal by
- 5:17seal. And that someone, he said, was already
- 5:20here. Quresh claimed that he and only he had
- 5:24been given the keys to understand the seven seals.
- 5:26He said the Spirit of God had revealed them to
- 5:28him through visions, fasting, and study. And
- 5:31if that made him sound like a prophet, he didn't
- 5:33argue. Again, in archival footage, you can hear
- 5:37David Quresh say, quote, Prophets speak for God,
- 5:40but the lamb? The lamb reveals God. There's a
- 5:43difference, end quote. It was a subtle but seismic
- 5:47shift. Instead of claiming to be Jesus returned,
- 5:50Quresh claimed to be the next step in redemptive
- 5:52history, the bridge between Christ's promise
- 5:55and Christ's return, a messenger of the covenant
- 5:58as he called himself, referencing Malachi chapter
- 6:013. He saw himself as the modern fulfillment of
- 6:04ancient patterns, like Moses leading a remnant
- 6:07out of Egypt, like David, the anointed king building
- 6:09a new spiritual kingdom, and like Isaiah's suffering
- 6:12servant, misunderstood, rejected, yet chosen.
- 6:16This tapestry of roles gave Quresh spiritual
- 6:18legitimacy in the eyes of his followers, and
- 6:21it gave them a new lens for understanding his
- 6:23every action. Why did he claim new wives? Why
- 6:27did he demand loyalty? Why did he refuse to surrender
- 6:30to the FBI? Because he wasn't just a man, he
- 6:34was the lamb, and the lamb suffers before he
- 6:36reigns. According to Revelation chapter 6, the
- 6:40lamb opens each seal, triggering a cascade of
- 6:43apocalyptic events, war, famine, martyrdom, and
- 6:47cosmic upheaval. Koresh mapped each seal to real
- 6:50-world events. He taught that the first seal,
- 6:53or the white horse, was a symbol of false religion,
- 6:56the second, or the red horse, was global conflict,
- 6:59the Gulf War, or US militarism, the third, black
- 7:03horse, was economic collapse, and the fourth,
- 7:07death, and hell. By the time the fifth seal opened,
- 7:10Koresh said, it would be time for the martyrs
- 7:13to rise. And when the ATF raid began in February
- 7:161993, Koresh told his followers the fifth seal
- 7:19had opened. The government wasn't just coming
- 7:21for their guns. It was fulfilling prophecy. Survivor
- 7:25David Thibodeau remembered Koresh saying, quote,
- 7:28This is it. They're going to make war with the
- 7:30Saints. We're the Saints, end quote. This sense
- 7:33of divine timing infused every decision that
- 7:35followed. The 51 -day standoff wasn't just endurance.
- 7:39It was obedience. Every hour they held out, Koresh
- 7:42said, was another brick laid in the New Jerusalem,
- 7:46and through it all, Quresh kept teaching. Even
- 7:48after he'd been shot, even while under siege,
- 7:52survivors say he preached for hours a day, drawing
- 7:54complex diagrams on whiteboards referencing Ezekiel,
- 7:58Daniel, and Zechariah, prophets found in the
- 8:01Old Testament of the Bible. To outsiders, it
- 8:04looked like madness. To those inside, it was
- 8:07revelation. Survivor Sheila Martin recalls, quote,
- 8:10he could make the Bible light up. I'd read those
- 8:13verses my whole life and had never seen what
- 8:16he showed us. It was like scales falling from
- 8:19your eyes." He told them that the pain was part
- 8:22of the plan, that the lamb was to be slain, not
- 8:26spared, that suffering proved their holiness,
- 8:29that the world's hatred confirmed their calling.
- 8:32And in that way, Quresh created a theology of
- 8:34inevitable persecution. One where resistance
- 8:37wasn't an act of rebellion, it was righteousness.
- 8:40By the time flames engulfed the compound, many
- 8:43believed they were fulfilling the sixth seal,
- 8:46quote, the sun became black as sackcloth, the
- 8:49whole moon became like blood, and the kings of
- 8:52the earth hidden caves, end quote. Quresh told
- 8:56them, quote, it has begun, end quote. And for
- 9:00many, that was enough. If Revelation was the
- 9:03frame of Quresh's theology, the Old Testament
- 9:06was its foundation. Because long before the fire,
- 9:09before the siege, before the gunfire, there were
- 9:11whispers about girls, about marriages, about
- 9:15something Quresh called the House of David. Quresh
- 9:19taught that he was the fulfillment of 2 Samuel
- 9:21chapter 7 where God promises King David, quote,
- 9:25I will raise up your offspring after you and
- 9:27I will establish his kingdom, end quote. Quresh
- 9:30claimed that God had told him he was that heir.
- 9:33He was destined to rebuild the House of David,
- 9:35not in Jerusalem. but in Waco. And that required
- 9:39children, not just any children, chosen children,
- 9:43born of his seed, from women divinely selected
- 9:46to be his, spiritual wives. In his sermons, Quresh
- 9:50said he was restoring the ancient practice of
- 9:52God -ordained polygamy. He pointed to Abraham,
- 9:55Jacob, and David, men with multiple wives, who
- 9:58fathered the patriarchal lines of Israel. And
- 10:01then he took it further. He dissolved existing
- 10:04marriages inside the compound. Husbands were
- 10:06told to become celibate. Wives and daughters
- 10:09were claimed by Quresh as his own. At least 12
- 10:12women were reportedly married to Quresh, some
- 10:15of them teenagers. He called this the new light,
- 10:19a divine revelation. He said that overrode conventional
- 10:22morality, that to object was to rebel against
- 10:25God. Survivor Curie Jewell remembers, quote,
- 10:28He said I belonged to him, that my body was part
- 10:31of God's plan. I was 10 when he started grooming
- 10:35me." Koresh fathered at least 15 children inside
- 10:39Mount Carmel. Each one, he claimed, was part
- 10:42of a divine bloodline, princes and princesses
- 10:46in the coming kingdom of God. He said his children
- 10:48would one day rule the nations with iron scepters,
- 10:51just like Revelation chapter 12 had promised.
- 10:54And that made every sexual relationship sacred
- 10:56in his eyes. To outsiders, it was abuse. To his
- 11:01followers, It was prophecy. Some mothers handed
- 11:04their daughters over willingly. Others were manipulated,
- 11:07pressured, or shamed. Survivor Sheila Martin
- 11:10recalls, quote, We didn't see it as sex. We saw
- 11:13it as sacrifice. David said the body wasn't ours
- 11:17anymore. It was the Lord's. End quote. Koresh
- 11:20blurred the line between divine intimacy and
- 11:22spiritual authoritarianism, between scripture
- 11:25and seduction. He transformed parental instincts
- 11:28into instruments of obedience. he transformed
- 11:31young girls into sacred vessels. And when questioned,
- 11:35he'd answer with scripture. The virgin shall
- 11:37conceive and bear a son, or many wives made solemn
- 11:40and wise, or the lamb shall lead them. In this
- 11:45doctrine, he wasn't breaking moral code. He was
- 11:48fulfilling divine law, restoring it to its ancient,
- 11:51glorious state. To many, it was unforgivable.
- 11:54To his followers, it was destiny. And yet, Even
- 11:58now, some survivors still believe the children
- 12:00he fathered were chosen. Not because they saw
- 12:03power in his touch, but because he convinced
- 12:06them his touch carried God's promise. David Koresh
- 12:09is gone, but his words, his pages, his prophecies,
- 12:13his gospel still exist. Some of it written by
- 12:16hand, some of it preserved in cassette tapes
- 12:18and FBI archives. Some of it burned into the
- 12:21memories of those who followed him and those
- 12:23who barely escaped. He never finished his manuscript
- 12:26on the seven seals. In fact, to this day, no
- 12:30one, not even scholars or former followers, can
- 12:32fully explain what Quresh's final interpretation
- 12:35of the Seals was meant to be. Some believe it
- 12:38was all a ruse, others say it was unfinished
- 12:41revelation, interrupted by fire, judgment, or
- 12:44betrayal. But one thing is clear, Quresh wasn't
- 12:47just preaching prophecy, he was crafting identity.
- 12:51He gave people a way to see the world, a language
- 12:53to interpret chaos, a role in something eternal.
- 12:57And for that, many were willing to give up everything.
- 13:00Homes, families, marriages, even their lives.
- 13:05Survivor Sheila Martin says, quote, People ask
- 13:07why we stayed. I ask, why wouldn't we? He gave
- 13:11us answers. Nobody else did. End quote. To understand
- 13:15courageous theology isn't to justify it. It's
- 13:19to recognize the power of belief, especially
- 13:21when it answers our deepest fears. Fear of meaninglessness,
- 13:25fear of abandonment. fear that the world has
- 13:27lost its way. Koresh offered certainty, wrapped
- 13:30in scripture, soaked in mystery. And when certainty
- 13:34speaks loud enough, even lies can feel like truth.
- 13:37David Koresh didn't need change to hold people
- 13:39at Mount Carmel. He used something far stronger.
- 13:43He used behavior control, dictating what followers
- 13:45wore, ate, when they slept, and even who they
- 13:49could marry. He used information control, limiting
- 13:52outside media, rewriting world events through
- 13:55his sermons and telling followers that only he
- 13:57could decode God's truth. He used thought control,
- 14:01flooding their minds with prophecy, silencing
- 14:04questions with scripture, replacing doubt with
- 14:06guilt. He used emotional control, leveraging
- 14:09fear, shame, and divine punishment to keep people
- 14:13inside, even as the walls burned. Koresh didn't
- 14:17just fill the bite model, he embodied it. For
- 14:21those who wonder how anyone could have stayed,
- 14:23how anyone could have let their children remain,
- 14:26this is the answer. Not weakness, not stupidity.
- 14:31Control. Crafted in scripture, sealed with fear,
- 14:35wrapped in divine destiny. We've seen this before.
- 14:39In Jonestown, the people drank poison because
- 14:41they believed it was salvation. In Waco, they
- 14:44stayed in the fire because they believed it was
- 14:46prophecy. The names change, the leaders change.
- 14:50but the pattern, it's hauntingly familiar. From
- 14:53the jungles of Guyana to the plains of Texas,
- 14:56from isolated compounds to digital echo chambers,
- 15:00we see it again and again. Charisma weaponized,
- 15:04truth distorted, and faith turned into fire.
- 15:07If there's one lesson in all of this, it's this.
- 15:11Belief, real, honest, world -shaking belief is
- 15:14powerful, but in the hands of the wrong person,
- 15:17it can become a prison for your mind, or it could
- 15:20even cost you your life. In our next series,
- 15:26we will examine other cults, their leaders, and
- 15:29extremist groups who continue to use these same
- 15:31psychological mechanisms to recruit and control
- 15:34followers. Until then, stay informed, stay skeptical,
- 15:38and never be afraid to ask questions. I'm Rick
