- 0:30Speaker 1: a little thing we like to call the after party.
- 0:33Speaker 1: This is the show after the show, the party after
- 0:35Speaker 1: the party. The bridge to get you from one full
- 0:37Speaker 1: episode of Disgraceland to the other. The backyard, to dig
- 0:40Speaker 1: into the dirt, our mission to uncover the truth, to
- 0:43Speaker 1: confront the myth, to reclaim the story. On this bonus episode,
- 0:47Speaker 1: we discuss criminally underrated female rock stars. Get your thoughts
- 0:51Speaker 1: on the most influential women from music history. Pretty you.
- 0:54Speaker 1: Next week's episode on the Libertines, Pete Daherty and the
- 0:58Speaker 1: murder he is a led by some to have been
- 1:01Speaker 1: a part of. And in the exclusive section, we dive
- 1:03Speaker 1: into this year's Rock and Roll Hall of Fame nominees
- 1:06Speaker 1: and let you know who we think is going to
- 1:09Speaker 1: be inducted. Plus we'll get into your emails, comments, dms,
- 1:12Speaker 1: and as always a whole lot of rosie. This is
- 1:15Speaker 1: the podcast for the musically obsessed, the outsiders, the independent thinkers,
- 1:19Speaker 1: who know that the best history is the history that
- 1:21Speaker 1: gets buried. Disgraceland is where I tell the stories they
- 1:24Speaker 1: didn't want told, the kind you'll end up telling someone else.
- 1:27Speaker 1: All Right, discos, let's get into it, okay. In this
- 1:36Speaker 1: week's episode of Disgraceland, we cover the incredible early career
- 1:40Speaker 1: of Chrissy Hind from The Pretenders, a woman who charged
- 1:45Speaker 1: through all of the obstacles that were set before her
- 1:48Speaker 1: and didn't stop until she got what she wanted, which
- 1:51Speaker 1: wasn't just rockstardom, it was really she wanted to be free.
- 1:55Speaker 1: She wanted freedom, She wanted freedom from her suburban surroundings,
- 1:59Speaker 1: want something bigger from this life, and liberation through art
- 2:04Speaker 1: through rock and roll, which I don't care what era
- 2:07Speaker 1: we are talking about. Guys, it is no easy task. Now,
- 2:11Speaker 1: if you haven't heard our full episode on Chrissy Hin,
- 2:14Speaker 1: you're about to get some spoilers here, so I encourage
- 2:16Speaker 1: you to go back just one story in the feed
- 2:20Speaker 1: and check that episode out. But if you have already
- 2:23Speaker 1: heard it, then you know that Chrissy Hind from the
- 2:25Speaker 1: Pretender's their singer, that she was also nearly a member
- 2:30Speaker 1: of the Clash. She was also nearly a member of
- 2:34Speaker 1: the Sex Pistols and of the Damned. This blew my mind.
- 2:39Speaker 1: Another fun fact her and Pretender's guitar player James Honeyman
- 2:43Speaker 1: Scott discovered the violent femmes Chrissy Hine. As we outline
- 2:48Speaker 1: in our story, overcame violent attacks in London, bullets at
- 2:54Speaker 1: Kent State, and way more to eventually create The Pretenders.
- 3:00Speaker 1: The Pretenders. The Pretenders a great rock and roll band
- 3:05Speaker 1: with a front woman who sported one of the most badass,
- 3:09Speaker 1: indelible and identifiable images in rock history. Seriously, in the
- 3:13Speaker 1: nineteen eighties, when The Pretender started hitting the charts for real,
- 3:17Speaker 1: showing up on MTV with their early hits back on
- 3:19Speaker 1: the Chain Gang Middle of the Road, I ask you this,
- 3:23Speaker 1: in all sincerity, who was cooler than Chrissy Hine at
- 3:26Speaker 1: that time? Who? No one, no one, That's who. She
- 3:32Speaker 1: had those low black bangs, super dark eyeliner. She's like
- 3:36Speaker 1: a bizarro world Debbie Harry and Ohio Tom Petty by
- 3:40Speaker 1: way of London. Chrissy Hind Anyways, for the Pretenders defined
- 3:44Speaker 1: effortless cool and artistry, and in this week's full episode
- 3:49Speaker 1: on Chrissy, I asked the question who is the coolest,
- 3:53Speaker 1: most badass influential female musician from rock and roll history?
- 3:58Speaker 1: And this is a this is not an easy question,
- 4:01Speaker 1: super hard question. We're going to try to answer it
- 4:04Speaker 1: today with your voicemails, your text and your emails coming up.
- 4:07Speaker 1: But before that, I thought we'd look at what the
- 4:09Speaker 1: experts think, because guys, newsflash, the experts, they usually don't
- 4:14Speaker 1: know shit. Before we dive in, I should mention though,
- 4:16Speaker 1: that I'm putting this episode together here in Austin, Texas
- 4:19Speaker 1: at suth By Southwest, where most of the great music
- 4:23Speaker 1: I saw over this these last few nights was or
- 4:27Speaker 1: days and nights, I should say it was from women.
- 4:29Speaker 1: I saw an intimate set with Nora Jones and Annie
- 4:33Speaker 1: from Saint Vincent performing. They were performing together, it was amazing.
- 4:37Speaker 1: I saw a scorching set kind of by accident at
- 4:40Speaker 1: the San Jose Hotel by Saana Sana and I suffer.
- 4:44Speaker 1: I don't even like saying this, but I suffered severe fomo.
- 4:47Speaker 1: And suffering severe fomo, I should say I could have
- 4:49Speaker 1: gone to see Elenis Morrissett, and I didn't. Went back
- 4:53Speaker 1: to my hotel and then I was talking to all
- 4:55Speaker 1: my friends the next day who went and they were
- 4:57Speaker 1: all blown away. It was an incredible show. I've since
- 5:00Speaker 1: Rolling Stone had clips on Instagram and I fucked up.
- 5:05Speaker 1: I should have gone, should have gone to the Atlantis show,
- 5:07Speaker 1: but I did not. But anyways, all to say, this
- 5:12Speaker 1: week's question of the week is top of mind to
- 5:15Speaker 1: say the least okay anyway to who the so called
- 5:19Speaker 1: experts believe is the quote unquote greatest, most badass influential
- 5:24Speaker 1: female musician from rock history. Now, of course there's no
- 5:28Speaker 1: lists that indicates such, but there are many lists that
- 5:31Speaker 1: we could consult that are vaguely related to this that
- 5:35Speaker 1: we could consult for this exercise. There's lots of lists
- 5:39Speaker 1: ticking off the accolades of women in rock and women
- 5:42Speaker 1: from music history and their contributions to culture. But I
- 5:47Speaker 1: think it makes more sense to look at lists of
- 5:50Speaker 1: both men and women, of both women and men. For example,
- 5:57Speaker 1: Rolling Stone, they're kind of the authority. Like it or not,
- 6:00Speaker 1: there's no more spin. Really, Cream doesn't compete. Alternative press
- 6:05Speaker 1: is just too narrowly focused. Mojo. I didn't look at
- 6:10Speaker 1: Mojo though, but Mojo Mojo's kind of an authority as well.
- 6:15Speaker 1: But Rolling Stone's kind of the authority. Okay, so Rolling
- 6:17Speaker 1: Stone Magazine is a list of one hundred greatest artists
- 6:19Speaker 1: from rock and roll history that they put together in
- 6:23Speaker 1: twenty ten. Okay, there's one woman in the top ten
- 6:28Speaker 1: on this list of one hundred. There's one woman. She
- 6:31Speaker 1: comes in at number nine. Then we have to go
- 6:34Speaker 1: way down to number thirty six for the next woman
- 6:37Speaker 1: on the list, and it's Madonna. Only two more women
- 6:41Speaker 1: are in the top fifty. That's Janis Joplin at forty
- 6:44Speaker 1: six and Patty Smith at forty seven, which is way
- 6:49Speaker 1: too low. For Patty Smith, way too low. She should
- 6:52Speaker 1: be higher than Janis, I believe. Now. Unbelievably, Tina Turner
- 6:58Speaker 1: doesn't even make the by herself. Okay, she makes it
- 7:02Speaker 1: as a member of her abusive psychopathic husband's duo, Ike
- 7:07Speaker 1: and Tina Turner. And they're at number sixty one, which
- 7:12Speaker 1: is way too low both for the duo, for Ike
- 7:15Speaker 1: Turner individually and for Tina Turner individually. Eda James is
- 7:19Speaker 1: at sixty two. It feels like, you know, they kind
- 7:21Speaker 1: of bunch the women together here. They've got Jana said
- 7:24Speaker 1: forty six and Patti Smith at forty seven, and they've
- 7:26Speaker 1: got Tina Turner at sixty one and Eda James at
- 7:30Speaker 1: sixty two. It's almost like they get down the list
- 7:33Speaker 1: and they're like, go, shit, we forgot there. We don't
- 7:35Speaker 1: any chicks on here, man, what are we gonna do?
- 7:37Speaker 1: And then they just bunch a couple. They just bunched
- 7:39Speaker 1: a couple together, back to back anyhow. Tina Turner is
- 7:44Speaker 1: at sixty one, Eda James is at sixty two, The
- 7:47Speaker 1: Charelle's seventy six, Martha and the Vendels eighty six, Diana
- 7:51Speaker 1: Ross and the Supremes at eighty seven, Chrissy Hin and
- 7:55Speaker 1: the Pretenders. They don't even sniff this list. This list blows, okay.
- 8:01Speaker 1: Aretha Franklin is the artist at number nine that I
- 8:05Speaker 1: didn't mention earlier. I didn't mention the name of the artists.
- 8:09Speaker 1: She's the only woman in the top ten, and I
- 8:12Speaker 1: think she should be in the top ten for sure.
- 8:14Speaker 1: Top ten is tight, I gotta say here. It is
- 8:19Speaker 1: numbers eight through one, in reverse order, Little Richard, James Brown,
- 8:25Speaker 1: Jimmy Hendricks, Chuck Berry, Rolling Stones at four, Elvis Presley
- 8:31Speaker 1: at three, Bob Dylan at two, in the Beatles at one.
- 8:37Speaker 1: We could spend all episode discussing those top three Elvis three,
- 8:42Speaker 1: Bob Dylan, two Beatles at one and what the right
- 8:44Speaker 1: configuration is. But I'm not going to do that. We're
- 8:48Speaker 1: having a different conversation right now. It's hard, though, to
- 8:51Speaker 1: argue with the list overall. The top nine okay again,
- 8:56Speaker 1: Aretha in reverse order, Aretha, Little Richard, James Brown, Jimmy
- 9:00Speaker 1: and Chuck Berry, the Rolling Stones, Elvis, Presley, Bob Dylan,
- 9:03Speaker 1: and the Beatles. Number ten, by the way, is Ray Charles.
- 9:06Speaker 1: I actually think Ray Charles is too low. I think
- 9:08Speaker 1: he could be higher. I think Ray Charles should be
- 9:11Speaker 1: higher than Little Richard. WHOA. I'm not gonna get into why.
- 9:15Speaker 1: That's another This is I'm not going to derail this conversation.
- 9:18Speaker 1: I want to keep it focused. Okay, but Madonna the
- 9:21Speaker 1: next most influential female artist, Madonna way down at thirty
- 9:27Speaker 1: seven as well. That's just wrong. First of all, forget
- 9:30Speaker 1: about Madonna for a second. We don't get actually don't
- 9:34Speaker 1: forget about Madonna, because we don't get Madonna without Patty Smith.
- 9:38Speaker 1: I would say we don't even get Madonna without the
- 9:40Speaker 1: go gos hear me out. Patty Smith busted down doors
- 9:44Speaker 1: that we didn't even know we're there, okay, and you're
- 9:47Speaker 1: gonna hear about that in our Patty Smith episode coming
- 9:49Speaker 1: up in a couple weeks, like two weeks, I think
- 9:51Speaker 1: three weeks, three weeks April, early April. But Patti Smith
- 9:56Speaker 1: should be higher, man, way higher, like Top twenty and
- 10:00Speaker 1: the Go Gos. Now I know, the Go Gos are
- 10:02Speaker 1: basically contemporaries of Madonna. They kind of hit around the
- 10:06Speaker 1: same time Go Gos broke through on MTV just a
- 10:10Speaker 1: little bit earlier. But most importantly, Go Gos broke through.
- 10:15Speaker 1: They wrote their own songs. They were the first group
- 10:19Speaker 1: of female musicians to have a number one record with
- 10:23Speaker 1: songs they themselves wrote. Okay, and this is after everybody
- 10:30Speaker 1: told them that they couldn't do this, basically told them
- 10:33Speaker 1: they couldn't write their own songs. It's insane that they're
- 10:37Speaker 1: not on this list at all. It makes absolutely no sense,
- 10:42Speaker 1: and so does the exclusion of the Pretenders, because in
- 10:46Speaker 1: a way, Chrissy Hyde defied what rock and roll looked
- 10:51Speaker 1: and sounded like for a minute there in the nineteen eighties.
- 10:56Speaker 1: I mean, really, she really did. I was there, I remember, okay,
- 11:00Speaker 1: But like I said, what do the experts know typically nothing.
- 11:03Speaker 1: When Chrissy Hind, however, was inducted into the Rock and
- 11:06Speaker 1: Roll Hall of Fame with The Pretenders five years before
- 11:10Speaker 1: this Rolling Stone list came out, Okay, so look, they
- 11:12Speaker 1: go ahead, they make the list, Christy Hines in the
- 11:16Speaker 1: Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, and they leave her
- 11:19Speaker 1: off the list. It doesn't make any sense. I'm not
- 11:23Speaker 1: saying take off, you know, the Cherell's or Diana, but
- 11:29Speaker 1: I mean, come on, anyhow, when she's inducted in two
- 11:32Speaker 1: thousand and five, Chrissy was cool enough to recognize that
- 11:35Speaker 1: the Hall of Fame like this Rolling Stone list is
- 11:37Speaker 1: fucking lame and called it out as a lame example
- 11:41Speaker 1: of establishment backslapping and said that it has nothing to
- 11:44Speaker 1: do with rock and roll. And they're absolutely right. Despite
- 11:47Speaker 1: how hard they try, they will forever be the antithesis
- 11:51Speaker 1: of rock and roll. That said, if they want to
- 11:54Speaker 1: induct me as the first podcaster, I will fucking buy
- 11:56Speaker 1: my own my own travel fair kidding, no, not anyhow,
- 12:02Speaker 1: she was right, Patti Smith is right. Excuse me, Christy
- 12:06Speaker 1: Hein was right. Patti Smith was right too about a
- 12:07Speaker 1: lot of things. But Christy Heines, who were talking about
- 12:09Speaker 1: and she was right. And anyways, I'm looking forward to
- 12:12Speaker 1: hearing your takes, not only Christy Hine, but on our
- 12:15Speaker 1: question of the week on the greatest female musicians from
- 12:18Speaker 1: music history, and that's going to come up in a minute.
- 12:20Speaker 1: All right, we're going to get to that. Your voicemails,
- 12:23Speaker 1: your texts, your emails, going to hear from you guys. Now,
- 12:27Speaker 1: speaking however, of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame,
- 12:30Speaker 1: the nominees we're announced a couple of weeks ago. We
- 12:32Speaker 1: get a lot going on over here, a double Elvis sick.
- 12:33Speaker 1: You probably might not be able to tell, maybe you can,
- 12:37Speaker 1: but there's been a lot going on. And we didn't
- 12:41Speaker 1: even mention the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame nominations,
- 12:45Speaker 1: which we typically have some fun with. The is a
- 12:47Speaker 1: brief little conversation in the Patreon chat, but we haven't
- 12:50Speaker 1: spent much time on the subject, but we will be.
- 12:51Speaker 1: We will be spending time on it today in the
- 12:53Speaker 1: exclusive section of this after Parties, Eth and I are
- 12:55Speaker 1: going to be discussing what we think of this year's
- 12:57Speaker 1: nominees and who we think is going to get inducted.
- 12:59Speaker 1: It's it's just a wild list. It's it's it's almost
- 13:05Speaker 1: impossible to predict who gets in or why they're even nominated,
- 13:11Speaker 1: and we all kind of have our own ideas of
- 13:14Speaker 1: what warrants nomination, never mind an induction. Anyways, that's going
- 13:18Speaker 1: on in the exclusive section of this after party coming up.
- 13:20Speaker 1: Go to disgrace landpod dot com to sign up to
- 13:22Speaker 1: become an all access member. You want to get in
- 13:24Speaker 1: there with the other discos in the Patreon chat chop
- 13:27Speaker 1: it up about wild stories from music history, whatever's going
- 13:31Speaker 1: on in music at the moment. Again, Go to disgrace
- 13:33Speaker 1: landpod dot com to sign up for exclusive content like
- 13:36Speaker 1: this conversation Zeth and I are going to be having
- 13:38Speaker 1: as well as ad free content. Okay, but before before
- 13:42Speaker 1: all that, before we get into the exclusive section, and
- 13:44Speaker 1: before your voicemails and texts and emails, a quick rundown
- 13:49Speaker 1: of what is happening in Disgraceland this week. This week,
- 13:52Speaker 1: like I said, we've got our Chrissy Hind episode that
- 13:55Speaker 1: it's available for you, all right, We've got coming up
- 13:58Speaker 1: next right after this here bonus episode, we have our
- 14:01Speaker 1: rewind episode which we do every week, which you guys know,
- 14:04Speaker 1: dip into the archive of over two hundred and ges
- 14:07Speaker 1: I don't know sixty five episodes by now, and we
- 14:11Speaker 1: pull one out of a hat this week. It's Waylon Jennings.
- 14:13Speaker 1: We got Waylon Jennings, the original Outlaw Well, I don't
- 14:16Speaker 1: know about the original, but he's kind of the avatar
- 14:18Speaker 1: for Outlaw Country. Whaylon Jennings is coming up in a
- 14:21Speaker 1: rewind slot this week right after this, and then next Tuesday,
- 14:25Speaker 1: brand new episode on mister Kate Moss. That would be
- 14:29Speaker 1: Pete Doherty of the Libertines. It's hard to describe this
- 14:34Speaker 1: Pete Doherty story. I believe that it's one of the
- 14:37Speaker 1: most underreported stories in rock and roll, the story of
- 14:41Speaker 1: the rock star Pete Doherty and the death of the
- 14:44Speaker 1: playwright Mark Blanco, first reported as a suicide, then an accident,
- 14:50Speaker 1: and suspected by many to be a murder. Now when
- 14:55Speaker 1: you're listening to this episode, be thinking about how Mark
- 14:58Speaker 1: Blanco died, and let me know if you think he
- 15:02Speaker 1: died by accident as authorities claim, or if he was
- 15:07Speaker 1: murdered and by who or whom? Which is who are
- 15:11Speaker 1: home murdered? By whom? Do you believe Pete Dharty had
- 15:15Speaker 1: anything to do with his death? Let me know six
- 15:17Speaker 1: one seven nine oh sixty six sixty three eight. Call
- 15:19Speaker 1: me and text me with your answers. Email Disgrace Lampod
- 15:23Speaker 1: at gmail dot com and you might hear your answer
- 15:26Speaker 1: on next week's Disgraceland bonus episode. Coming up your answers
- 15:31Speaker 1: to this week's question of the week on Chrissy Hein
- 15:34Speaker 1: on which female artists are the most influential from rock
- 15:38Speaker 1: and music history. Coming up your answers to this week's
- 15:42Speaker 1: question of the Week on Chrissy Hine. I try to
- 15:45Speaker 1: say that, like Terry Gross, I didn't do it well. Anyways,
- 15:50Speaker 1: back in the flash, all right, we are back guys.
- 16:13Speaker 1: Oh man, what a couple of days. Awesome couple days.
- 16:17Speaker 1: I'll talk about it more later. I want to get
- 16:19Speaker 1: into your stuff here. I've been talking too much. Six
- 16:21Speaker 1: one seven nine six six six three eight voicemail and
- 16:24Speaker 1: text question of the week. We're trying to answer which
- 16:28Speaker 1: female artists for music history are the most badass, the
- 16:31Speaker 1: most influential, the most consequential. Let's check out this voicemail
- 16:36Speaker 1: from the four to one four.
- 16:38Speaker 2: Hey, Jake, this is Amy from Milwaukee. I'm calling to
- 16:42Speaker 2: respond to who's the most badass woman in rock? That
- 16:45Speaker 2: is Nina Hagen. Nina Hagen is beyond amazing. She has
- 16:51Speaker 2: been around, she's still here, she's still performing, and she
- 16:56Speaker 2: is amazing. She's the godmother of punk rock and she
- 17:00Speaker 2: will be forever.
- 17:02Speaker 1: Nice. Wait a minute, Wait a minute, Amy, Wait a minute.
- 17:07Speaker 1: I just did about a week and a half worth
- 17:09Speaker 1: of research on Patti Smith, and I was told that
- 17:10Speaker 1: Patty Smith is the Godmother of punk. I actually think
- 17:15Speaker 1: Patti Smith has a different title. We're going to get
- 17:17Speaker 1: into that in the Patty Smith episode. But I want
- 17:19Speaker 1: to know more about Nina Hoggen. I know a little
- 17:20Speaker 1: bit about her, not much, and I'm super interested to
- 17:24Speaker 1: know what kind of crimey, little juicy true crime details
- 17:28Speaker 1: there might be from Nina Hoggin's past that might warrant
- 17:31Speaker 1: an episode on her and a way for me to
- 17:34Speaker 1: kind of dive in and learn more about her myself
- 17:36Speaker 1: and hopefully bring her a story to all the discos.
- 17:40Speaker 1: Get at me, Amy, get back. If you don't want
- 17:42Speaker 1: to call, just send me a text. Let me know
- 17:44Speaker 1: what you know about Nina Hoggen. All right, six one
- 17:46Speaker 1: seven nine oh six six six three eight. The two
- 17:49Speaker 1: five one calls in with this message.
- 17:53Speaker 2: Hi, Jake, this is Andrew from Brooklyn.
- 17:56Speaker 3: Most badass female musician, gotta be Wendy oh Williams.
- 18:02Speaker 1: Thank you, bye bye, no, thank you. Andrew, appreciate the call.
- 18:06Speaker 1: Wendy O. Williams. I hear you. Supremely badass. Another one
- 18:10Speaker 1: that I'm not super familiar with, and I'm excited to
- 18:12Speaker 1: start researching. We've got her on the list for an
- 18:14Speaker 1: episode coming up in a couple months, So Wendy o'
- 18:17Speaker 1: Williams will be coming your way in Disgraceland shortly. Andrew,
- 18:20Speaker 1: thank you for the call. Let's dig into the seventy four.
- 18:26Speaker 3: Hey, Jake is Clint seventy four Western Pennsylvania in response
- 18:30Speaker 3: to your baddest ass female rock rock and roll gotta
- 18:34Speaker 3: be John Jets. He's been true to her roots from
- 18:37Speaker 3: the time she started out as a miner in the seventies.
- 18:40Speaker 3: She's been through the been through the wringer, stuck to
- 18:44Speaker 3: her attitude, stuck to her rock and roll. Gotta be
- 18:47Speaker 3: John jet bro All right, Hey, thanks bouchee. You do
- 18:50Speaker 3: a great job.
- 18:51Speaker 1: Appreciate you out there. Western Pennsylvania. Can't argue with Joan
- 18:54Speaker 1: jet I hope you dug our Runaways episode. Also Clint
- 19:00Speaker 1: let me know if you've seen the Light of Day
- 19:01Speaker 1: fun fun fact. The Light of Day Jon Jet Michael J.
- 19:05Speaker 1: Fox film came out in the eighties. The first show
- 19:10Speaker 1: I ever played on tour with my band was in Ohio, Cleveland,
- 19:15Speaker 1: Ohio at the Euclid Tavern where they filmed Light of Day.
- 19:18Speaker 1: We drove straight from Queen's Castor and I can still suit.
- 19:21Speaker 1: All crammed into one van and it was got to say,
- 19:25Speaker 1: it was a lot of fun. There's about four people there,
- 19:27Speaker 1: but hey, we didn't care. We thought we were like
- 19:28Speaker 1: Black Flag in the eighties, out there grinding. We kind
- 19:31Speaker 1: of were in our own little way. Anyway, Shout out
- 19:34Speaker 1: to the Euclid Tavern and jone Jet Light a Day.

- 19:49Speaker 4: You I was having a shit morning and.
- 19:52Speaker 2: I was listening to the bonus.
- 19:54Speaker 4: Episode What Music do Serial Killers Listen To? And the
- 19:58Speaker 4: part about John Wayne g you running out of this
- 20:01Speaker 4: clown outfit listening to Betty Hill, I mean, thank you,
- 20:06Speaker 4: thank you so much bro, like you just put a

- 20:13Speaker 4: Keep up the good work and just fucking disco.
- 20:18Speaker 1: Ish my man, love this call. I think you just
- 20:23Speaker 1: you just play the Benny Hill music and you just
- 20:26Speaker 1: you can't help but feel good. He can't help but laugh, Matt, Matt,
- 20:29Speaker 1: give us a little Benny Hill. See now we all
- 20:33Speaker 1: feel a little better, don't we. We do. It's just
- 20:35Speaker 1: it's magic. I don't know what it is. It's so dumb,
- 20:40Speaker 1: especially when you're thinking of John way Gacy running around
- 20:43Speaker 1: listening to listening to it and his clown get I yeah, yeah,
- 20:46Speaker 1: this is just kind of the gift that keeps on giving.
- 20:49Speaker 1: Six one seven nine oh six six six three eight guys,
- 20:51Speaker 1: voicemail and text, don't forget hit me about next week's
- 20:54Speaker 1: question of the week. We're gonna be getting into this
- 20:56Speaker 1: topic of Pete Daugherty and the murder mystery again, underreported story.
- 21:02Speaker 1: And I've been coming across a lot of these lately
- 21:05Speaker 1: where it's just like it's the type of story where
- 21:08Speaker 1: I don't think it's unfinished. I think there's a lot
- 21:10Speaker 1: left to be uncovered there. Super true crime uh. And
- 21:14Speaker 1: again the question is, after you hear our episode, do
- 21:16Speaker 1: you think that do you think that Mark Blanco that
- 21:23Speaker 1: his death at that party with Pete from the Libertines
- 21:28Speaker 1: was an accident or do you think he was murdered?
- 21:32Speaker 1: Hit me up with let me know six one seven
- 21:33Speaker 1: nine oh six six sixty three eight voicemail. You can
- 21:36Speaker 1: also text me if you want. You don't feel like
- 21:37Speaker 1: talking into the talkie talk box, you can just send
- 21:39Speaker 1: a text. Lots of people text We got the five
- 21:42Speaker 1: four to one here texting in Hey, Jake Tom from
- 21:44Speaker 1: the five four to one here. Excellent job on the
- 21:47Speaker 1: Chrissy Hind episode. She's one of my all time favorites
- 21:49Speaker 1: and the most badass. But there are many others. Here
- 21:52Speaker 1: are a few, Jon Jet Brody Doll from The Distillers,
- 21:56Speaker 1: Kathleen Hannah Bikini Killed, Carrie Brownstein Sleader, Kimmy, Kim Gordon's
- 22:00Speaker 1: Sonic Youth, so many more, but I'll leave it leave
- 22:04Speaker 1: it there a piece. Yeah, Kim Gordon from Sonic Youth
- 22:07Speaker 1: might be tops on my list. Supremely badass, cool thing
- 22:14Speaker 1: the way she's talking to Chuck d in that song
- 22:16Speaker 1: that was originally written for l Cool j but he
- 22:18Speaker 1: wouldn't do it. Just so awesome. And Carrie Brownstein. Yeah,
- 22:23Speaker 1: I was walking into a hotel one night in New
- 22:25Speaker 1: York and it was really late, and I noticed that
- 22:30Speaker 1: I was sort of walking in with Carry Brownstein, and
- 22:34Speaker 1: I wanted to say something, but I didn't because it
- 22:36Speaker 1: would have been fucking weird. It was like two in
- 22:38Speaker 1: the morning. But she just looks so badass. She looked
- 22:42Speaker 1: like way more rockstar than she does on Portlandia course,
- 22:46Speaker 1: but even on stage she just kind of had this
- 22:48Speaker 1: aura to her that was just super fucking cool, and
- 22:52Speaker 1: I was just kind of like, yeah, respect you go,
- 22:54Speaker 1: all right, I dig that. Brodie Doll Yeah, badass, super
- 22:57Speaker 1: badass and awesome by the way, too great, great, just
- 23:00Speaker 1: a fucking great musician. Love the distillers, tough to fuck with,
- 23:05Speaker 1: Kathleen Hannah. Here you got a great list. Great list.
- 23:10Speaker 1: Tom in the five four to one appreciate you nine
- 23:14Speaker 1: oh four write and it never receive the shirt. Listen
- 23:16Speaker 1: nine oh four that shirt's coming. I shouldn't say shirt,
- 23:19Speaker 1: it's merch. It's merch. I know I mentioned you a
- 23:22Speaker 1: couple of weeks back on the Bonus episode, but here's
- 23:23Speaker 1: the deal. I've nailed these out once a month. I
- 23:26Speaker 1: can't be going to the post office every week, or
- 23:28Speaker 1: even every two weeks. If I'm lucky, I get there
- 23:30Speaker 1: once a month. I try to get there once a
- 23:32Speaker 1: month so it will come. Some of you might be listening,
- 23:36Speaker 1: and I know you're like, what do you mean? Who
- 23:38Speaker 1: did you miss? What? What are you sending?
- 23:40Speaker 5: Well?
- 23:40Speaker 1: I send merch to people who leave reviews for Disgraceland
- 23:43Speaker 1: that I end up reading. Not everyone who leaves a review.
- 23:45Speaker 1: But if you leave a review on Apple Podcasts or
- 23:48Speaker 1: Spotify and I select it and I read it here
- 23:50Speaker 1: in the podcast and you get in touch with me,
- 23:53Speaker 1: if you text me six one seven nine oh six
- 23:55Speaker 1: six six three eight like the nine oh four here,
- 23:58Speaker 1: and I read your review, and you text me and
- 24:01Speaker 1: you give me like a shirt size or something, then
- 24:04Speaker 1: I will send some awesomeness your way as a little
- 24:07Speaker 1: thank you. All right now, not everybody leaves a review
- 24:10Speaker 1: gets one, but most, well not most, A lot of
- 24:11Speaker 1: people do. Your chances aren't none, is what I'm saying.
- 24:16Speaker 1: I just asked you to be patient. It's a common
- 24:19Speaker 1: speaking of reviews. We got this one on Apple podcast
- 24:21Speaker 1: from DW one five five DW DW gives five stars, says,
- 24:26Speaker 1: amazing shows. I love these podcasts. I've listened to every
- 24:29Speaker 1: available episode of both Disgraceland and Hollywoodland, and I just
- 24:33Speaker 1: want to say how important these shows have become to me.
- 24:35Speaker 1: I was recently interviewed for a spotlight in my company's
- 24:39Speaker 1: newsletter and social media, and I knew they were going
- 24:41Speaker 1: to ask me for podcast, movie, or music recommendations because
- 24:44Speaker 1: it was mentioned in the pre interview email, but during
- 24:46Speaker 1: the actual interview, podcast never came up. So when she
- 24:48Speaker 1: asked at the end if I had anything else to add,
- 24:50Speaker 1: I made a point to mention how big a fan
- 24:52Speaker 1: I am with these shows. If you're on the fence
- 24:54Speaker 1: about listening, stop reading this and just hit play. It's amazing, yo,
- 24:59Speaker 1: DW one five point five DW hit us up man
- 25:02Speaker 1: six one seven nine oh six six six three eight.
- 25:05Speaker 1: I said, man, but I don't know if you're a
- 25:07Speaker 1: man or a woman. Whatever you are, get at us,
- 25:10Speaker 1: and we will get you some merch for that wonderful
- 25:13Speaker 1: positive review. G Ward two on Spotify and and Nancy
- 25:17Speaker 1: Wilson of Heart are the best female rockers in my mind.
- 25:20Speaker 1: Just listen to Barracuda and then of course, Janis Joplin.
- 25:22Speaker 1: I look forward to every episode from Disgray Sand and
- 25:25Speaker 1: Hollywood Land, The After Party, et cetera. Keep them coming
- 25:27Speaker 1: from Jeanette, Jeanette get in Touch with a six one
- 25:30Speaker 1: seven nine oh six six six three eight. Jeanette's kind
- 25:32Speaker 1: of combining a review there with the question of the
- 25:35Speaker 1: week with her answer you can do that, can do
- 25:38Speaker 1: whatever you want. Five three zero Texan biggest badass female
- 25:41Speaker 1: another one, clearly Wendy O Williams. That's what they're saying.
- 25:44Speaker 1: Lots of people with the wen Wendy O Williams. You
- 25:46Speaker 1: guys are gonna love this episode. Nine four nine text
- 25:49Speaker 1: in in regards to our conversation last week about serial
- 25:53Speaker 1: killers and the music that they listened to. John Wayne
- 25:55Speaker 1: Gacy listened to Elton John. How do I know this?
- 25:58Speaker 1: I was a pen pal of his game. He had
- 26:00Speaker 1: a questionnaire he would send to people who wrote to him,
- 26:03Speaker 1: and when he sent me the questionnaire, I said I'd
- 26:06Speaker 1: complete one if he would too, And he did. One
- 26:09Speaker 1: of the questions on It was about music that we
- 26:11Speaker 1: both listened to and Elton John as a favorite. Oh
- 26:15Speaker 1: my wow, I'm just yo nine for nine. Thank you. Also,
- 26:25Speaker 1: I hope you're good nine four nine. Appreciate you. I
- 26:29Speaker 1: was talking to a friend the other night and I
- 26:31Speaker 1: decided you mentioned pen pals. I decided I'm going to
- 26:33Speaker 1: become pen pals with Tom Hanks because it's not hard.
- 26:37Speaker 1: I know how to do this. I don't know Tom Hanks,
- 26:40Speaker 1: but I know how to become a pen pal of his.
- 26:42Speaker 1: And I'm not going to give it away. But a
- 26:46Speaker 1: friend of mine does know Tom Hanks a little bit,
- 26:48Speaker 1: doesn't know him. I don't want to oversell his connection
- 26:51Speaker 1: to him, but he basically my friend of mine's in
- 26:53Speaker 1: a band and Tom's a fan of his band, and
- 26:55Speaker 1: they hung out about a year ago. So the whole
- 26:58Speaker 1: nature of my my pen pal correspondents that I'm gonna
- 27:02Speaker 1: take up with Tom Hanks. I'm just gonna talk shit
- 27:06Speaker 1: about my friend that he knows. And uh, I'm very
- 27:12Speaker 1: excited about this. Actually, I have to get a couple
- 27:15Speaker 1: of props together. I don't want to give too much away,
- 27:17Speaker 1: but I'm looking forward to this. It's gonna be fun.
- 27:19Speaker 1: Six one seven nine oh six six six three eight
- 27:22Speaker 1: at Disgrace Lampod on the socials as well, if you
- 27:24Speaker 1: want to hit me up there on Instagram or TikTok.
- 27:27Speaker 1: That's really where I'm gonna respond to you. Maybe Facebook,
- 27:31Speaker 1: probably not X. It's hard. It's hard to keep all
- 27:35Speaker 1: the correspondents going on all the damn channels. Man Lee
- 27:40Speaker 1: Wright saying, Hey, Jake, I hope you check out the killing.
- 27:42Speaker 1: It's intense and fantastic. Be well, Lee, were we talking
- 27:46Speaker 1: about that last week? The killing? Because the killing has
- 27:49Speaker 1: been on my mind? And I mentioned it because I
- 27:51Speaker 1: it's one of Patti Smith's favorites, and that came up
- 27:53Speaker 1: in the in the research. I think so, I think so.
- 27:56Speaker 1: I haven't checked it out yet, but I'm excited too.
- 27:57Speaker 1: I got to get through Love Story first. I gotta
- 27:59Speaker 1: get through John John and Carolyn Bissett got pretty rocky
- 28:05Speaker 1: this last week for Carolyn. God, this show is trash,
- 28:09Speaker 1: but I love it. I do. I just fucking love it.
- 28:12Speaker 1: But I'm excited to get into the killing. Not gonna lie.
- 28:16Speaker 1: Karen Curtin sends us an email. She says, thanks, many,
- 28:19Speaker 1: many thanks for profiling Towns van Zant. He was a
- 28:22Speaker 1: genius and a poet for his in Our Times. If
- 28:25Speaker 1: you haven't seen it, I recommend the twenty eighteen film
- 28:28Speaker 1: Blaze directed by Ethan Hawke, based on the life of
- 28:31Speaker 1: Blaze Foley. Towns van Zant is portrayed by Charlie Sexton,
- 28:36Speaker 1: brilliant female rocker series Me and Bestie are headed to
- 28:41Speaker 1: London next month to see Susie Quatro, Detroit's finest. She's
- 28:45Speaker 1: gonna perform and she can still bring it. I scrolled
- 28:47Speaker 1: through back episodes of Disgraceland and didn't see an episode,
- 28:50Speaker 1: just a suggestion. She was a force of nature, a
- 28:53Speaker 1: relatively new listener bringing more converts to your podcast, Case
- 28:58Speaker 1: and SLC Case writing down here, Nina Hoggin from that
- 29:04Speaker 1: earlier correspondence and Susie Quatro because neither are on our list,
- 29:10Speaker 1: and I'm gonna put them on there. Guess who I
- 29:13Speaker 1: saw a couple of days ago, just you know, walking
- 29:16Speaker 1: on the street. One Charlie Sexton. Who you bring out?
- 29:19Speaker 1: Who you can imagine looks cool af still to this day.
- 29:23Speaker 1: Guys been on the scene since I don't know, he's
- 29:25Speaker 1: like seventeen, He's always looked badass and cool. And yeah,
- 29:28Speaker 1: I did see Blaze. It's amazing, it's incredible. It's actually
- 29:32Speaker 1: what made me want to do the Towns van z
- 29:34Speaker 1: Ant episode. We will do a Blaze FOLI episode at
- 29:36Speaker 1: some point in addition to Susie Quatro and thanks for
- 29:38Speaker 1: getting adis Karen Kurtin appreciate you. Disgrace Lampod at gmail
- 29:41Speaker 1: dot com. Guys, you want to email me like Karen,
- 29:43Speaker 1: you want to get in touch about anything, go for it.
- 29:46Speaker 1: I'm gonna be back in.
- 29:46Speaker 6: The flash all right.
- 30:01Speaker 1: I'm back back in the saddle today. I started putting
- 30:04Speaker 1: my thoughts together for this episode when I was in
- 30:07Speaker 1: Austin at south By Southwest, and I'm recording today. I'm
- 30:11Speaker 1: back home, and I had a great time. I really did.
- 30:16Speaker 1: I think I had the best time at south By
- 30:18Speaker 1: Southwest that I've had in about a decade. I've been
- 30:21Speaker 1: going to south By Southwest, I think since two thousand
- 30:24Speaker 1: and three, when I was in bands and playing solo
- 30:27Speaker 1: and hanging out and just but you know, at a
- 30:33Speaker 1: certain point it just got to be like work. And
- 30:36Speaker 1: I won a couple of years ago, and I really
- 30:38Speaker 1: didn't want to go, and I was trying to remember
- 30:40Speaker 1: the last time I was excited to go to south
- 30:42Speaker 1: By Southwest and I couldn't. I was telling my wife
- 30:44Speaker 1: before I went, I was like, you know, I'm really
- 30:45Speaker 1: excited this time, she was like, what cause it's it's
- 30:50Speaker 1: for those who haven't gone. It sounds I'm sure it
- 30:53Speaker 1: sounds great, but it is overwhelming, and it has become
- 30:56Speaker 1: like this bohemoth of an event that just you got
- 31:01Speaker 1: to kind of like it can suck you in. It's
- 31:03Speaker 1: like a it'll suck you in like a like a
- 31:06Speaker 1: washing machine and just spinning around and come out all
- 31:11Speaker 1: wet and twisted up. It's just it's just it can
- 31:15Speaker 1: do that to you. I guess age or something. I
- 31:17Speaker 1: know how to do it now. And I just I
- 31:19Speaker 1: saw a bunch of friends I haven't seen in a
- 31:21Speaker 1: really really long time, and I just realized how how
- 31:25Speaker 1: long it's been since since I got out there, and
- 31:28Speaker 1: just you know, kind of did the thing. And I
- 31:30Speaker 1: did the thing, and I had a great time reconnecting
- 31:32Speaker 1: with people I saw. I did a little performance with
- 31:35Speaker 1: some friends that you'll hear about soon. We've got a
- 31:38Speaker 1: big announcement we're gonna make in relation to that big, big, big, huge,
- 31:42Speaker 1: the huge kind of once in every couple of years
- 31:45Speaker 1: kind kind of announcement and connected, like I said, with
- 31:48Speaker 1: a bunch of friends, saw some good live podcasts, saw
- 31:52Speaker 1: some good live music, went to the Awards show, supported
- 31:55Speaker 1: some of my friends. It was just great. It's fun.
- 31:57Speaker 1: It's a blast travel sucked on the way back, but
- 32:01Speaker 1: I didn't care. I was watching The Big Lebowski on
- 32:03Speaker 1: the plane last night. Was supposed to watch it last week,
- 32:06Speaker 1: didn't get to it. Got to it on the plane, though,
- 32:09Speaker 1: and I didn't have playing tears, you know, that's the thing.
- 32:13Speaker 1: I had playing laughs though I was laughing my ass off.
- 32:16Speaker 1: Guy next to me knew why, and he understood. He understood.
- 32:20Speaker 1: I think he was like a pro ballplayer or something.
- 32:22Speaker 1: Guy was huge. He just looked like a baseball player.
- 32:24Speaker 1: I don't know what that I'm talking about, though. He
- 32:25Speaker 1: could have been anything, could have been a fireman. Anyhow.
- 32:28Speaker 1: He was telling me that his dad this is his
- 32:30Speaker 1: favorite movie, and I told him my son in the
- 32:33Speaker 1: theaters when it came out, And then I fell old
- 32:35Speaker 1: because I realized I probably could have been this guy's dad,
- 32:38Speaker 1: and he's a full grown man. Anyhow, the movie. I
- 32:41Speaker 1: was watching it not just because it's fantastic and I
- 32:43Speaker 1: love it. I was watching it because Zeth and I
- 32:45Speaker 1: are profiling it and this film should be played loud,
- 32:48Speaker 1: and we are going to film that tomorrow. That podcast
- 32:52Speaker 1: the fourth installment of our video podcast This film should
- 32:57Speaker 1: be played loud, which you can hear exclusively on the
- 32:59Speaker 1: page Treon app, where we focus on the great, tremendous
- 33:06Speaker 1: culture defining music from our favorite movies. Big Lebowski, like
- 33:11Speaker 1: I said, is our fourth installment. We've previously covered Boogie Nights,
- 33:16Speaker 1: Train Spotting, and Goodfellas, and if you want to watch
- 33:20Speaker 1: any of those, I gotta say, first, they're fucking hysterical. Second, uh,
- 33:25Speaker 1: super informative. You're gonna get information on this music that
- 33:28Speaker 1: you probably didn't know or have relative to the movie,
- 33:31Speaker 1: of course, but just in general. And they're just really fun.
- 33:35Speaker 1: I just I just have this such a best such
- 33:38Speaker 1: such the best time. I have the best time. I
- 33:41Speaker 1: have such a great time making these and putting them
- 33:44Speaker 1: together with Zeth. And really I've said this before, the
- 33:47Speaker 1: convergence of of music and movies coming together. It's it's,
- 33:53Speaker 1: you know, aside from my kids and family and all
- 33:56Speaker 1: that stuff, it might be my favorite thing on the planet.
- 33:58Speaker 1: It's really tremendous.
- 34:01Speaker 4: You know.
- 34:01Speaker 1: If God was like, hey, you can have one thing
- 34:02Speaker 1: to entertain yourself with for the rest of your life,
- 34:05Speaker 1: it can only be one thing. Is it going to
- 34:07Speaker 1: be like records. Is it gonna be books, There's gonna
- 34:10Speaker 1: be movies. It will be movies and music. I would
- 34:14Speaker 1: just be like, give me, give me movies with great soundtracks.
- 34:16Speaker 1: That's what I want. Great Neil drops. That's the thing.
- 34:19Speaker 1: And now we're bringing that thing to you. Guys. You
- 34:21Speaker 1: got to be a Patreon member though, go to disgracelaindpod
- 34:23Speaker 1: dot com to sign out to cop that super easy.
- 34:26Speaker 1: You're also gonna get ad free listening all kinds of stuff.
- 34:29Speaker 1: And I mentioned this, I do this with Zeth. I
- 34:31Speaker 1: do a lot with Seth. Zeth's in the exclusive section
- 34:33Speaker 1: of this podcast coming up in a minute, and Zeth
- 34:35Speaker 1: is sort of behind the he's helming nuts sort of.
- 34:37Speaker 1: He is absolutely helming the Hollywood Lamb podcast feed these days.
- 34:43Speaker 1: We have the archive episodes in there that hit once
- 34:45Speaker 1: a week, and then we build we build a little
- 34:47Speaker 1: theme around that for the week, and in what we're
- 34:49Speaker 1: calling the Rap Party episode with Zeth in the screening
- 34:53Speaker 1: Room episode as well, and the Rap Party talks about
- 34:57Speaker 1: the subject of that week's full episode, and the Screening
- 35:01Speaker 1: Room hits on that and previews whatever film. We're all
- 35:05Speaker 1: gonna be watching together that weekend, and then we're gonna
- 35:08Speaker 1: come back top of the week in the wrap party.
- 35:09Speaker 1: You know, keep it all going again, move on to
- 35:11Speaker 1: the next movie subject. That's how we do. And there's
- 35:13Speaker 1: a true crime angle to all of it. It's important,
- 35:16Speaker 1: so it makes it different. It's what makes it special.
- 35:18Speaker 1: It's what makes it Hollywood Land. It's what makes it
- 35:20Speaker 1: double Elvis. We're not just giving you the same same
- 35:23Speaker 1: rote Hollywood history that you've heard eaxillion times you can
- 35:26Speaker 1: get anywhere else. We're giving it to you through the
- 35:28Speaker 1: lens of true crime and the transgression of the actors, actresses, directors,
- 35:32Speaker 1: movie moguls, whomever. Okay, that's Hollywood Land. Make sure you

- 36:09Speaker 1: coach my kids baseball team. I just love it. I still,
- 36:13Speaker 1: in the back of my head feel like I can play.
- 36:15Speaker 1: I can't, but I feel like I can. And I
- 36:19Speaker 1: tried joining like a men's softball team, but I didn't
- 36:22Speaker 1: really try that hard and I never kind of got
- 36:25Speaker 1: through the sign ups. And it's just why are there?
- 36:28Speaker 1: Why is there? Like Podcaster Softball League? Okay, all right,
- 36:33Speaker 1: why why does this exist? You know, we need to
- 36:37Speaker 1: start this and it can be a travel league. It's
- 36:39Speaker 1: not hard. We all come together. We do a little
- 36:41Speaker 1: tournament like once twice a year. Got the Double Elvis
- 36:44Speaker 1: Disgracesland team, the Stuff you should know team, the Tenderfoot team.

- 36:58Speaker 1: it's always in these sort of just like strictly industry things,
- 37:02Speaker 1: which is cool. I'm not complaining. I'm not complaining, but
- 37:04Speaker 1: I'm saying we need other other events, okay, or perhaps
- 37:10Speaker 1: maybe at these events we create this super fun thing
- 37:12Speaker 1: to do, like the Eagles, the band Eagles. I fucking
- 37:15Speaker 1: hate the Eagles. Man. You don't what I'm talking about.
- 37:17Speaker 1: They used to have their own little softball tournament. There
- 37:19Speaker 1: used to be the Rock and Jock MTV era of
- 37:23Speaker 1: softball tournaments. Remember that, That's what I'm talking about. Gotta
- 37:26Speaker 1: do something like that for podcasting. I know I have
- 37:30Speaker 1: friends out there who listen to this show, who make podcasts.
- 37:32Speaker 1: Get in touch and let me know what you think.
- 37:34Speaker 1: I'm lamenting the fact that this does not exist, which
- 37:37Speaker 1: I guess that technically makes this a rant, but I
- 37:40Speaker 1: don't know. It's sportsy. It's ranty, and that's why it's
- 37:42Speaker 1: here in the sports ran Matt, how did I do?
- 37:46Speaker 1: Did I nail the sixty second sports rant and under
- 37:48Speaker 1: thirty seconds or the thirty second sports rant and under
- 37:50Speaker 1: sixty seconds? I can't remember what the hell we're talking
- 37:52Speaker 1: about either way. That was the sports rant sponsored by
