- 0:05Welcome to Have Faith, Let It Begin. This is Ariel Santana.
- 0:10Can you believe I'm seven years old already? I'm old enough now to introduce my dad.
- 0:15Ladies and gentlemen, your host, my dad, Angel Santana.
- 0:22Two thousand came and the spark was lit. A testimony raw, it wouldn't quit.
- 0:27His mother's voice, a guiding force.
- 0:56So at this time, we're going to be doing our scripture overview.
- 0:59And as you've heard me tell you before, the purpose of scripture overview that
- 1:03I've developed is because when I used to sit in the pews and the minister or
- 1:07pastor would come up and start to speak, I had no clue what they were talking about.
- 1:11And I would just sit there with that face, you know, like.
- 1:15And I said, well, what better way than to show what we're about to read in kind
- 1:21of a synopsis way, in a summary.
- 1:24This way it makes a little bit more sense. And then you can then feel that Holy
- 1:28Spirit take over you. So this is our scripture overview about today's scripture readings.
- 1:33Before we hear God's word today, I'm going to briefly connect these passages. The Gospel of Matthew.
- 1:41We meet Joseph.
- 1:43And what stands out about Joseph is not how much he says.
- 1:48About what much he does. So it's not what he says. It's about his actions in the Bible.
- 1:54In fact, Scripture records very few words from Joseph at all.
- 2:00Yet his influence is impossible to ignore.
- 2:07Joseph protected his family. He worked to provide for them.
- 2:11He listened to God even when life became uncertain And chose to stay faithful
- 2:18when things did not go according to plan,
- 2:21And I think that there is something powerful about that Because many fathers
- 2:27or father figures are not remembered for long speeches They're remembered for consistency,
- 2:35For sacrifice For showing up day after day,
- 2:40For quietly carrying responsibilities nobody else fully saw Even though Joseph
- 2:47was not Jesus' biological father He still chose responsibility,
- 2:54He still chose love He still chose to guide and protect the child placed into his care.
- 3:03And that reminds us that fatherhood is about far more than biology.
- 3:10Sometimes the people who shape our lives are fathers, stepfathers,
- 3:17grandfathers, mentors, coaches,
- 3:24older siblings, teachers, pastors.
- 3:30And the number one role model Mothers,
- 3:37Because you can do double duty Sometimes love is shown through presence And
- 3:44we look through the scriptures in the Bible At least I know I did And we also
- 3:49discover something very important,
- 3:52The Bible is filled with imperfect fathers,
- 3:56Abraham made mistakes David made mistakes Jacob made mistakes And yet God still worked through them,
- 4:09That matters because today is not about celebrating perfection,
- 4:14It's about recognizing love,
- 4:17growth, sacrifice, forgiveness And the impact that people live and leave As they shape our lives.
- 4:29Then in Proverbs, we're going to hear The righteous man walks in his integrity
- 4:34His children are blessed after him,
- 4:38That verse, that verse reminds us that we pass down and what we pass down as
- 4:45fathers or father figures, that matters, not just financially,
- 4:51but spiritually, emotionally, morally.
- 4:57Children remember character.
- 4:59They remember presence.
- 5:02They remember how they were treated. And often, the older we become,
- 5:07the more we understand the sacrifices our parents were making while trying to guide us through life.
- 5:15And finally, we'll go into Psalms 103, which reminds us of the compassion of the loving father.
- 5:22Not a present or perfect father.
- 5:25A compassionate father. A father who loves deeply, forgives graciously,
- 5:33and continues caring for his children.
- 5:36And ultimately, that points us toward God himself.
- 5:41Because many of the lessons we learn through the people who raised us help us
- 5:46better understand the love, the patience, and the guidance, and the compassion of our Heavenly Father.
- 5:55Together, these passages remind us The greatest impact a person can leave behind
- 6:02Is often not found in wealth In statues,
- 6:08Or recognition But in love Sacrifice Wisdom Faith Faith that passes down to others,
- 6:19That's your scripture overview And now we will hear directly from these verses,
- 6:27From the Old Testament reading Proverbs chapter 20 verse 7 The righteous lead
- 6:31blameless lives Blessed are the children after them.
- 6:36Then we go to Matthew 1, verses 19-24. Because Joseph,
- 6:42her husband, was faithful to the law and yet did not want to expose her to public
- 6:47disgrace, he had in mind to divorce her quietly.
- 6:53But after he had considered this, an angel from the Lord appeared to him in
- 6:58a dream and said, Joseph, son of David, do not be afraid.
- 7:05Do not be afraid to take Mary home as your wife, because what is conceived in
- 7:12her is from the Holy Spirit.
- 7:15She will give birth to a son, and you are to give him the name Jesus,
- 7:22because he will save his people from their sins.
- 7:27All this took place to fulfill what the Lord has said through the prophet.
- 7:32The virgin will conceive and give
- 7:34birth to a son And they will call him Emmanuel Which means God with us,
- 7:42When Joseph woke up He did what an angel of the Lord had commanded him And took Mary home as his wife,
- 7:51And then we go to the Gospel of Psalms 103 verses 13 As a father has compassion
- 7:57on his children so the Lord has compassion on those who fear him.
- 8:04The word of the Lord. Praise be to God. How do I begin Father's Day?
- 8:10Let's do what my father does best. He loves to tell jokes, right?
- 8:15So I went out like I did with Mother's Day and went and said,
- 8:19let me find the top 10 things that fathers say.
- 8:22So let's do that first, okay?
- 8:25All right. And then, of course, I'm going to show you the top couple that my
- 8:27dad does. Okay. So here we go.
- 8:31Do you think I'm made out of money?
- 8:35That's one right there. These are the top ones. Do you think money grows on trees?
- 8:41When I was your age. Who touched the thermostat? Where's the remote?
- 8:51I'm not sleeping. I'm just resting my eyes.
- 8:55There's more than that. There's more than one way to skin a cat.
- 9:02Do as I say, not as I do.
- 9:06Now if your friend jumps off the cliff Are you going to do that too?
- 9:11Walk it off Walk it off,
- 9:15Don't tell your mother.
- 9:19Go, go, just ask your mother. Whatever she wants is fine with me.
- 9:24What's for dinner?
- 9:28Okay. Then it said something here that I thought was funny, funny.
- 9:32They said that you know if your father has a crazy sneeze.
- 9:36I don't know if that made any sense to all of you. It did for me.
- 9:38My dad has one of the most creative sneezes that God could give anyone.
- 9:44And I can actually nail that pretty well. He could just come out of nowhere.
- 9:50I have no idea what that means That's his sneeze Does anybody else have a funny
- 9:56thing That their father or father figure would do That makes them remind them
- 10:00Of any type of noise Keep it clean now,
- 10:03No okay well I just figured I'd ask So then I started thinking about my father,
- 10:08Angel senior And I came up with my own little list Gotta put him on the spot Right,
- 10:15My father has this thing,
- 10:19He always does this thing where When things go wrong Don't worry about it He
- 10:25stretches that R Don't worry about it,
- 10:30If you call my dad at home, hey, dad, or we call him papi, papi,
- 10:34he would say in Spanish, I'll translate. He'll go, get up the law.
- 10:37What that means? I'm broke.
- 10:43I have recently stole this from my dad and now use it at my job.
- 10:47I've seen my father interact with people where they come up and go,
- 10:50hey, Mr. Santan, how you doing? He goes, I was good.
- 10:55How is you?
- 10:58Well now I do that at my job And when I go into work in the morning Especially
- 11:03the overnight person I always come in to greet them and say Hey good morning
- 11:05how you doing And they go Ah it's good,
- 11:10So my dad's comments Have just really Carried on Let's see,
- 11:19Okay I have one last note here Tell the now story,
- 11:23Well here's my story before I go into the sermon my dad would go on a nice little
- 11:29tangent start talking about something you know educating,
- 11:32but then when he's about to change gears and really start to think he would
- 11:36pause and use the ever famous now,
- 11:42and you'd sit there waiting for the next line,
- 11:47and then it would come so now i find myself with my kids i'll be out in the
- 11:50thing and i'm definitely becoming my own father because i my daughter was asking
- 11:54me questions and I went, well, you do this, do this and this now.
- 11:57And I went, Oh no, I'm coming.
- 12:01And my favorite famous line that my dad would say to me is I would call from Rhode Island.
- 12:13When I was dealing with a depression.
- 12:16Never shared this with him until now. Sometimes you've got to hear your parents' voices.
- 12:22Sometimes you've got to pick up the phone and just want to hear that person's voice.
- 12:28You want to feel at peace. So I would call home, and my dad would typically
- 12:35pick up the phone, and he'd say, hello. I'd go, hey, dad.
- 12:40Who that there when I say who there? That's what he would say I go,
- 12:43dad, it's me Who did I say there when who did I say there Dad,
- 12:48it's me, it's Angel, it's Lucido That's my Spanish name He goes,
- 12:52who did I say there And he would just go on and on But it's those little moments,
- 12:57Those little comments Those things that we do as parent figures That resonates to us as children,
- 13:05So that's why I label today's message The strength to stay I think some changes
- 13:12when something changes when we become adults.
- 13:16As children, many of us assume our parents always know exactly what they're doing.
- 13:23We think that they always have all the answers. We think that they have everything figured out.
- 13:30But then life happens.
- 13:34Responsibilities happen. Bills happen.
- 13:39Stress happens. And suddenly, we begin to see our parents differently.
- 13:48Not just as a mom or a dad, but as a human being trying to do their very best
- 13:55while carrying out responsibilities.
- 13:58We were too young to fully understand.
- 14:03How do we do these things? How many things do we appreciate now that we completely
- 14:09overlooked as children?
- 14:12How many sacrifices did we benefit from Without even realizing,
- 14:18What they were doing What was happening around At the home Sometimes the older
- 14:25we got The more we finally understood What our parents were protecting us from,
- 14:31And the Bible shows us that too.
- 14:35Joseph protected Jesus long before Jesus fully understood what Joseph was carrying.
- 14:42Can you imagine the pressure that Joseph must have felt protecting Mary,
- 14:48protecting Jesus, traveling to Bethlehem,
- 14:51fleeing from Egypt, trying to provide for his family while also trusting God through uncertainty?
- 15:00We rarely think about the emotional weight that Joseph carried.
- 15:05Yet he continued showing up And sometimes that is what love looks like Showing
- 15:12up again and again and again Even when life feels uncertain.
- 15:20One of the most beautiful things about Joseph Is that he teaches us strength without arrogance,
- 15:27Joseph does not need recognition He does not demand attention He simply continues
- 15:34doing what God called him to do,
- 15:38And even though scripture records and the Bible will tell us Very,
- 15:42very few words about Joseph We can clearly see his influence through Jesus,
- 15:49Jesus learned from him Worked beside him,
- 15:55Watched him Listened to him Learned responsibilities from him Learned compassion
- 16:03from him Learned faithfulness from him,
- 16:07And I think that matters because children often become shaped By what they consistently see,
- 16:15Not just by what they are told.
- 16:19But by what is modeled in front of them every day.
- 16:26How many lessons did we learn from our parents without realizing it at that time?
- 16:33How many values were passed down simply by watching how they treated people?
- 16:38Joseph reminded us that fatherhood is not always loud.
- 16:43Sometimes it's found in consistency, in patience,
- 16:49sacrifice guidance and presence and maybe that's why Joseph matters so much,
- 16:58because his life reminds us of some of the youngest and strongest people,
- 17:04can be the ones who quietly carry responsibility without meeting recognition in return,
- 17:12as the youngest of four I spent a lot of time with my mom,
- 17:18Because my father often was working Working so much Even on certain weekends
- 17:24He would perform his duties for the National Guard And growing up My father,
- 17:31Was my hero.
- 17:37Was when I was a kid. Still is now.
- 17:44But as children, we rarely understand everything that our parents are carrying behind the scenes.
- 17:54It wasn't until I became older that I started going through my own struggles, my own insecurities.
- 18:03And that's when I began realizing what my father had been doing all those years.
- 18:08There were nights That my father would go down to the basement,
- 18:14He would sit at his desk Or as he would call it The desk.
- 18:23He would later then tell me As I got older That when he would sit at that desk,
- 18:29That's where he would perform his miracles,
- 18:35Can't tell you how many times I've been in the basement with my dad When we're
- 18:38doing certain things And he'd look over and he'd look at his desk He'd go Right
- 18:42here This is where I perform my miracles,
- 18:48I realized later what those miracles were The miracles were moments Where he
- 18:53was trying to figure out Which bills could wait,
- 19:00Which bills Could wait So that his children Could still have a birthday Bye.
- 19:09A Christmas.
- 19:12A good life. How many parents you know.
- 19:17Or are dealing with that right now. How do you know. How do you guys know.
- 19:21What that feels like. I'm sure you do. I know I do.
- 19:26Trying to protect our children from stress. While carrying it yourself.
- 19:31Trying to create joy for your family. While privately worrying about finances.
- 19:37That changes how you see a parent. Because real sacrifice is often invisible.
- 19:44My father also decided at one point back in 1981, when his job in Puerto Rico
- 19:51says, we're going to move you to the States.
- 19:54And they brought him over to Goshen and they started driving him around.
- 19:58My father was a machinist and he would fix these huge machines.
- 20:03God gave him a gift. Give him a talent. My dad could look at a machine and say,
- 20:09I know how to build that I know how to fix that Well one day as he was driving
- 20:13them around They told him What do you think of this town My dad,
- 20:18already his wheels were turning I could see my children living here,
- 20:23They brought him over to a trailer park They brought him over to these Run down homes And my dad said.
- 20:32My kids And I can do better than that And I'm not knocking those facilities
- 20:38or locations. Don't take that the wrong way.
- 20:41But he had a plan. He had envisioned a house.
- 20:45So they moved us here to the States. And we stayed in Howard Johnson.
- 20:50Or as we learning English for the first time, we'd call it honyonyo.
- 20:56We would stay there for six months while they were looking for us and a place to live.
- 21:02And as God would have it, he finds a home on Orange Avenue.
- 21:07In walking distance where my father was now stationed Walking distance Which
- 21:11was great because we didn't have a car.
- 21:17And then I would walk with my mother up Schofield Street, down Schofield Street,
- 21:23as she would be the crossing guard for six years here in the village.
- 21:28Or getting a phone call at two in the morning because the police department,
- 21:32found out that we were one of the only two families in downtown that knew Spanish.
- 21:37And they needed translators.
- 21:39And my father, without hesitation, come pick me up.
- 21:43But I'm not sitting in the back seat. I'm going to sit in the front.
- 21:46And then we'll go over there And I'll do a translation for you Look at where we've come.
- 21:56God has a gift for all of us He knows what he's doing,
- 22:02So As I stated, my father came here from Puerto Rico We all did And his employer
- 22:08took him around And he took homes And father made the choice He chose a community,
- 22:14Where he believed his children could grow safely He chose a community Where
- 22:21he knew his children would have opportunities,
- 22:25And standing here today I will tell him You chose right.
- 22:34One of the greatest gifts my father gave me was not money,
- 22:40not possessions, and not status. He taught me how to treat people.
- 22:47He taught me how to be polite.
- 22:51He taught me how to be honest. He taught me how to be loving.
- 22:57He taught me to be respectful. And as I grew older, I realized those lessons
- 23:03mattered far more than material things ever could.
- 23:07Because children learn from what they see. They watch how we speak to others.
- 23:14How we handle pressure. How we respond to disappointment.
- 23:18And how we love people.
- 23:21And maybe that's what Proverbs just said to him this morning.
- 23:25The righteous man walks in his integrity.
- 23:28His children are blessed after him Integrity leaves fingerprints They leave
- 23:34fingerprints on the future of generations,
- 23:38And we see throughout the Bible Abraham passed down through generations Jacob
- 23:46wrestled with both failure and blessings,
- 23:49David was deeply flawed Yet still taught Solomon about leadership and faith.
- 23:59Scripture never hides imperfect fathers, never has, never will.
- 24:04And honestly, that gives hope to all of us.
- 24:09Being a good father or role model does not require perfection.
- 24:13It requires love, growth, humility, and the willingness to keep showing up.
- 24:24One of the most powerful fathers in Scripture is found in the story of the prodigal son.
- 24:30What makes that story so powerful Is not just the son leaving It's the father waiting,
- 24:37Watching Hoping Praying,
- 24:43And his son When his son finally returned home The father ran toward him Not
- 24:48away from him The kind of love reflects That kind of love reflects on The heart of God,
- 24:57A love that welcomes people home A love that forgives A love that does not stop
- 25:03caring And truthfully and honestly with all of you this morning Many parents
- 25:08understand that kind of love deeply,
- 25:11Because real love does not disappear Real love does not disappear the moment someone struggles.
- 25:20Real love keeps hoping Keeps praying Keeps believing,
- 25:27One thing I will never forget about my father Is that he always made time for
- 25:30us Even after long hours of work Even when he was tired Even when life demanded
- 25:38things from him He showed up,
- 25:41And honestly Presence matters more than people realize,
- 25:46Children remember presence They remember who showed up Who listened Who stayed,
- 25:54and maybe someone here today needed to hear that.
- 25:59You do not have to be a perfect to impact someone's life.
- 26:03You don't have to be perfect. Sometimes just being there consistently changes everything.
- 26:08I knew that the day that I would marry my wife.
- 26:14There was nobody else I wanted standing beside me more than my dad.
- 26:20That's why he was my best man at my wedding.
- 26:24That moment,
- 26:27Meant more to me than words can fully explain Because he wasn't Just standing
- 26:34there beside me On my wedding day He had been standing beside me,
- 26:40My entire life.
- 26:44So through lessons, guidance, encouragement, correction, love,
- 26:50and a lot of, ah, it's good.
- 26:55My father always knew how to point me back toward what Jesus would do.
- 27:02And I think that's the one greatest gift any parent or role model can ever give someone.
- 27:08Point them to Jesus.
- 27:13Let's pause. Heavenly Father, we just ask you at this time to watch over the
- 27:16first responders, be with them and guide them, allow them to be with someone
- 27:21who is in need in your precious name. Amen.
- 27:25So we're not talking about perfection, not about direction, helping someone
- 27:29move closer to God through the way they live. That's what we're talking about here today.
- 27:35Be closer to God. And also I want to acknowledge something important today as I close this out.
- 27:41Not everyone here had a father growing up I'm aware of that Some were raised
- 27:47by mothers who carried both roles,
- 27:50Some by grandparents By older siblings By coaches, teachers,
- 27:56pastors, mentors Role models And some are still healing from the absence Of a parent altogether,
- 28:05And if that is part of your story I want you to hear these words right now.
- 28:12Love still found you. Guidance still found you.
- 28:17God still placed people in your life to help shape you to who you have become.
- 28:22Because sometimes the people who raise us or help raise us are not biologically connected.
- 28:29Sometimes they're connected through love, sacrifice, and presence.
- 28:34And that's because of God.
- 28:37So here's how we end today's sermon. The older I get The more I realize my father's
- 28:43greatest gift to me Was not what he bought for me Even though I do love those
- 28:47wrestling dolls I still have them somewhere,
- 28:50It was about who helped me become,
- 28:54It was about who he helped me become,
- 28:58He taught me how to love people How to treat people How to carry myself with
- 29:02honesty, kindness, and faith These lessons still guide me today Fatherhood is
- 29:10not about perfection It's about showing up,
- 29:14Staying present Continuing to love people Even when life becomes difficult And maybe today,
- 29:22We realize We've all been loved too The people who loved us Through every stage
- 29:27in life The people who shaped us to who we are today I'm proud to be named After my father.
- 29:36But even more proud to say kind of look a little just like it.
- 29:44And when it's all said and done, God created each and every one of us in his image.
- 29:49So guess what? We all look like our heavenly father. Praise be to God. Amen.
