Transcript
- 0:00Hi everyone. Welcome to Mini Scroll, the
- 0:02daily Internet culture podcast bringing you the biggest stories
- 0:05from social media, the creator economy and the digital space.
- 0:09Every Monday through Thursday. I'm your host, Lauren Meisner,
- 0:13the founder of the youth digital media brand Centennial World.
- 0:16All right, we need to get right into this because there is so
- 0:19much to cover today. I was very mistaken that nothing
- 0:22really happened over the weekend after I published that episode
- 0:26yesterday. Annabelle was like, you know,
- 0:28there was actually like quite a few things that happened over
- 0:30the weekend that you forgot to mention and I had seen most of
- 0:33them and I just completely like over my head when I was
- 0:35prepping. Anyways, the first thing I
- 0:37wanted to cover though is that I forgot in my content recap to
- 0:41talk about Vanderpump Villa because I am all caught up on
- 0:44Lisa Vanderpump's new show, Vanderpump Villa, and I have a
- 0:47lot of thoughts. OK, so basically it's kind of
- 0:50like Below Deck meets Vanderpump Rules.
- 0:54And my overall consensus is that I have many issues with this
- 0:59show. I think it's the most
- 1:02overproduced and possibly scripted reality show I have
- 1:06actually ever seen. Like maybe selling Sunset is
- 1:10worse, but that's about it for me.
- 1:12The main giveaways as to how this show is so produced or why
- 1:16this show is so produced in my opinion.
- 1:18Number one, Eric's character, the Chateau manager, like that
- 1:22person does not work there. Like, he is not the manager.
- 1:25He has no power. And so many of the cast members
- 1:28keep basically saying that to us, Like they keep saying that
- 1:31in their confessionals. Like, well, Eric's not actually
- 1:33the manager. Or like Eric actually doesn't
- 1:35have any power. Or Eric actually can't get me in
- 1:37trouble and it's such a dead giveaway that he was just cast
- 1:41in this quote UN quote role like almost like a paid actor, like
- 1:45his character makes no sense and the staff are like truly not
- 1:49buying into it. The next giveaway for me that
- 1:52this is like the most over produced scripted show ever is
- 1:55how much of the staff like the cast, hangs out with the guests.
- 2:00If I've learned anything from Below Deck, it's that the staff
- 2:03of a luxury experience, they are not off the clock until the
- 2:07guests go to bed. Whereas on this show they'll
- 2:09finish dinner service and then the cast, like the staff who are
- 2:14allegedly working for the guests, will like change into
- 2:17their going out outfits and then they'll like party with the
- 2:20guests and they'll be like I'm off the clock, like the day is
- 2:23done. No, that is not how this works.
- 2:26I fucking know. We all know Bravo Watchers.
- 2:28We all know how this works 'cause we have watched years of
- 2:31below deck and there are so many scenes of the staff, like the
- 2:35cast just sitting with the guests, like just hanging out,
- 2:38sitting there, chatting with them, drinking with them, eating
- 2:42with them. It just it makes no sense.
- 2:45So my belief here, what I think is actually happening, is that
- 2:49the cast are being paid to be on a reality show and there are
- 2:53actual service staff who we do not see as the audience who are
- 2:57taking care of everyone, including the staff like
- 3:01including the cast of the show. There is nothing inside me that
- 3:04believes that the cast that we see on this show are the only
- 3:08people working at that Chateau. And of course like everybody
- 3:11else, I cannot get over how much the show is trying to make
- 3:14Marciano into Jax and Hannah into Stassi.
- 3:17And these dynamics will never happen again because Vanderpump
- 3:20Rules was so authentic. These people had long standing
- 3:23relationships. Everything that we saw in the
- 3:25first couple seasons of Vanderpump Rules was reality.
- 3:28Like genuinely authentic reality.
- 3:31And they're trying to manufacture that again and it's
- 3:33just not working. So I actually see why Bravo said
- 3:37no to this show because it just, it wasn't going to work.
- 3:40My concluding thoughts about this show so far is that it is
- 3:42absolute trash, but I will of course watch every single
- 3:45episode. OK on to the first story of
- 3:47today that I have for you guys, the first news story.
- 3:50So JoJo Siwa is being accused of stealing, telling her new song
- 3:55Choose Your Fighter. In the latest installment of
- 3:58JoJo Siwa's Messy Rebrand, she is being accused of stealing her
- 4:02new song Choose Your Fighter. A video is circulating from
- 4:06Spill Sesh on TikTok that shows JoJo hosting a listening party
- 4:09for her new album. In the clip, JoJo plays a song
- 4:13called Choose Your Fighter and tells the crowd quote I want you
- 4:16to listen for a very special ad Lib that is about one of my
- 4:18exes. After that video gained over
- 4:20500,000 views, fans dug up a TikTok posted by another artist
- 4:25named Emmeline who had posted this song that she wrote back in
- 4:292022. So this has led to accusations
- 4:32that JoJo Quote, UN quote, stole Emmeline's song and was
- 4:36basically playing it off as her own.
- 4:38So Emmeline has actually deleted her 2022 TikTok in which she was
- 4:42singing the song. Presumably Jojo's album or team
- 4:46have asked her to, but she did comment on the situation she
- 4:50wrote quote Hi 2024 fans, I'm going to make a story time soon.
- 4:55I actually didn't sign off on it.
- 4:57Coming out with JoJo Bracket's not her fault.
- 5:01If my version gets love, I can still put it out after hers.
- 5:04Thanks for the support. So people are basically taking
- 5:07this comment and saying, Oh my God, she didn't even know that
- 5:10JoJo was going to release her song.
- 5:13And you know, this is JoJo stealing her song and playing it
- 5:16off as hers. I think it's way more likely
- 5:18that she sold her demo to Jojo's record label.
- 5:22And when JoJo said she wrote this song for her ex, she was
- 5:25referring specifically to the ad Lib because that's kind of how
- 5:27she said it. Like if you watch the clip back
- 5:30and you listen to what she says she's like listen for the ad Lib
- 5:33I wrote it about. My ex.
- 5:35Users also claim though that the clip of JoJo from the listening
- 5:38party, you can hear Emmeline singing not JoJo in the
- 5:41recording. But again, the video is like 15
- 5:45seconds long so we have no idea how much JoJo is actually
- 5:49singing on that track. And I am no music industry
- 5:52expert, but apparently it is normal in this type of deal for
- 5:56the artist who recorded the demo initially to still be on the
- 5:59track and or you know JoJo or whoever kind of uses that song
- 6:03now gets access to that song to sing over top of it or in
- 6:07addition to their vocals. So I think this is a great
- 6:11example of the Internet feeling like they are experts on things
- 6:17that they're not. You know, there's a lot of
- 6:18people kind of going in and saying like, whether this is the
- 6:21truth or not, like whether Emmeline sold her demo or not.
- 6:24Like, JoJo shouldn't be using her song.
- 6:25She should be recording her own vocals.
- 6:27And it's like, I don't think we realize how many songs we listen
- 6:30to. Like all of Jennifer Lopez
- 6:32catalog is like other people singing basically.
- 6:34Like, there's this happens all the time.
- 6:37It doesn't make it right necessarily.
- 6:38And obviously the music industry has a lot of issues and they can
- 6:41be quite predatory with how they treat artists and songwriters
- 6:44and everyone involved in the artistry of it.
- 6:47But it's just like the business of music, and we don't know the
- 6:50business of music. Like, we're not experts on that
- 6:52when it comes to this song. Emily even said this is not
- 6:55Jojo's fault. OK, the next story I have for
- 6:57you guys, strap in. This is a big one.
- 7:01There is some drama. I'm sorry to bring this up
- 7:04again, but there is some drama between Adam McIntyre, Todrick
- 7:07Hall, and Colleen Ballinger. OK, so all of this started a few
- 7:11weeks ago when Todrick Hall started defending Colleen
- 7:14Ballinger against the manipulation and grooming
- 7:17allegations on social media. Over the years, Todrick has
- 7:20encountered his share of criticism.
- 7:22Notably, in 2019, allegations surfaced from his former
- 7:25assistant, who shared documents claiming Todrick's involvement
- 7:29in a sexual harassment lawsuit. Additionally, several dancers
- 7:32have accused him of failing to compensate all the individuals
- 7:35involved in his music videos and productions.
- 7:38He has also long been friends with Colleen, where the two
- 7:41actually faced backlash for a now deleted clip of them poking
- 7:44fun at a homeless person. Todrick was actually like a
- 7:47YouTube, I believe first, At least that's how I knew him.
- 7:51So if you don't know who he is, he was like a YouTube or he
- 7:54well, he's like a singer performer, but like used YouTube
- 7:58to help build his following in his career like that back in the
- 8:00day. He's also been friends over the
- 8:02years with Taylor Swift. That's like one of his claims to
- 8:05fame. So that's kind of who he is.
- 8:08On March 28th, Todrick posted an Instagram video of Colleen
- 8:11performing and waitress on Broadway.
- 8:12Back in 2019, Todrick actually starred alongside her in this
- 8:17When social media users started criticizing him for posting
- 8:20about Colleen, he expressed his unwavering support for her in a
- 8:23series of Instagram comments. Across the comments, he
- 8:26essentially accused Adam Adam McIntyre of lying, criticized
- 8:31anyone who fed into Colleen's cancellation, and called the
- 8:34claims against her dramatic. One of his comments said, quote,
- 8:38might as well throw Jeffrey Dahmer and Hitler in while
- 8:42you're at it. My point is, yes, I still think
- 8:45that all people, even murderers, should be given the opportunity
- 8:50for redemption. Even Hitler.
- 8:54What the fuck? OK, in reference to Adam's
- 8:57content, Todrick wrote quote, we watched his videos.
- 9:01Still not enough for a reason to disown my friend and not love
- 9:04her. So this led many users to flood
- 9:07his comment section in defense of Adam and other ex fans who
- 9:11have come forward and Todrick questioned their experiences and
- 9:16protected Colleen, He wrote. Quote I don't know what grooming
- 9:19children means to you, but I think it implies something much
- 9:21more malicious than what happened.
- 9:24And terms that imply a mother of three would do something sexual
- 9:26brackets. Again, I know that that's not
- 9:29its only definition, but it is what it implies.
- 9:32And if that were true, she would be in jail right now, not making
- 9:35rocks on YouTube. Then maybe I agree with you, but
- 9:38even still, we can agree to disagree.
- 9:41Adam later made a video addressing Todrick's comments
- 9:44and debunking his claims, concluding in the video with
- 9:47quote. I think Todrick's a loser.
- 9:49I think Colleen's a loser. I think they're all pathetic.
- 9:52The video was well received by viewers with many sending
- 9:54support to Adam. But most recently Todrick has
- 9:57found himself in another controversy after creating a
- 10:00GoFundMe to help his family after their home burned down.
- 10:04Some fans are upset that Todrick is asking fans for financial
- 10:07help when he seemingly has the privilege and financial means to
- 10:10support them in some way. Quote The GoFundMe for 10K for
- 10:13his parents house that caught fire is just like what?
- 10:16Todrick doesn't have 10K to fix his family's home, but he has
- 10:19enough for AG wagon and a mansion in LA.
- 10:22He's in a transitional period so he needs to beg his fans who are
- 10:25less wealthy than him to pony up 10K in donations.
- 10:29Honestly, one of the more pathetic things I've heard in
- 10:31the last year, 1 user commented on Adam's video.
- 10:35Another user tweeted quote Todrick Hall posted a GoFundMe
- 10:38asking strangers for 10K for his family house that burned down,
- 10:41but then hosted his birthday party last night where he had
- 10:44horses and a petting zoo like dot dot dot.
- 10:48So Todrick addressed the GoFundMe earlier today on
- 10:51Instagram with a statement quote.
- 10:54I struggle sometimes to decide whether or not to address
- 10:57controversy, but in my experience, saying nothing
- 10:59allows the Internet to paint your narrative and I'm not
- 11:01interested in allowing that anymore.
- 11:03I just want to be crystal clear. I would never spend money that
- 11:06my fans raised during a traumatic time for my family on
- 11:09my birthday party, he wrote. I don't really think that's what
- 11:13people were implying. I don't think that people
- 11:15thought that he was using the GoFundMe money to pay for his
- 11:18birthday party. I think they were saying if you
- 11:20can afford a petting zoo and horses at your birthday party,
- 11:25then you can probably like this. One user said pony up 10K, but
- 11:28we don't know his situation. I also think there were rumors
- 11:31or like allegations a few years ago that he wasn't paying his
- 11:34rent on his LA mansion. So I think this is a case of
- 11:40celebrities or famous people aren't as wealthy as we think
- 11:43they are. That's a common misconception
- 11:46that we see a lot online. If you have any ounce of fame,
- 11:49like people think that like anybody that has ever been on TV
- 11:52one time is really wealthy and that's just not the truth.
- 11:56So I don't know about that, but I know that Todrick Hall remains
- 11:59problematic. And the last story that I have
- 12:01for you guys today is that Billie Eilish has announced her
- 12:04new album just days after putting her entire following
- 12:08list on her close friends. So on Instagram today, Billie
- 12:11has revealed that her third studio album, titled Hit Me Hard
- 12:15and Soft will come out on May 17th Quote.
- 12:18So crazy to be writing this right now.
- 12:20I'm nervy and excited not doing singles.
- 12:23I want to give it to you all at once.
- 12:25Phineas and I could not be more proud of this album and we
- 12:28absolutely can't wait for you to hear it.
- 12:30Love you. Love you.
- 12:31Love you. So this announcement comes just
- 12:34days after she put her entire Instagram following list on her
- 12:37close friends and gained over 8 million followers because of
- 12:42this marketing move. However, this album announcement
- 12:45didn't come without its hiccup. Rolling Stone magazine actually
- 12:50leaked the album's track list in an online article.
- 12:53After Billy announced the album, she took to Instagram to blast
- 12:57the publication on her stories writing.
- 13:00Fuck Rolling Stone with a clown emoji.
- 13:03And then in another story she wrote Fuck you guys at Rolling
- 13:05Stone. Both Billy and Rolling Stone
- 13:08have removed their stories. That I think is just yeah, that
- 13:13sucks. That is just not OK.
- 13:15I think I'm going to hope without the Rolling Stone leak.
- 13:19I didn't see the article, so I don't know exactly how it was
- 13:22written. I'm going to hope that it was,
- 13:23you know, maybe sent in some type of press release and there
- 13:26was an embargo that the journalist or the editor just,
- 13:28like, missed and they thought it would be OK to publish the track
- 13:32list. Like album leaks and song leaks
- 13:34and all of that kind of stuff happen all the time in the
- 13:36industry. But for mainstream publication
- 13:39like a reputable publication to be doing that to an artist, No,
- 13:44no, no, no, no, no, no. I'm going to assume I'm.
- 13:49I'm out here giving people the benefit of the doubt today, but
- 13:52I'm gonna assume that was like an honest mistake.
- 13:56Anyways, guys, that is it for today.
- 13:58Thank you so much for listening to Mini Scroll.
- 14:01Please remember to rate, review and subscribe.
- 14:03It helps me so much. I love you guys and I will talk
- 14:06to you tomorrow. Bye.
