- 0:11Hello friends, it's Sean. Here it is a Monday.
- 0:15It's the first day of a new week.
- 0:17It's the 26th of May and I'm delighted to have your company
- 0:21today and maybe even all of this week.
- 0:23So glad that you have tapped on play and said, Sean, come on, I
- 0:28have got a moment and I would love for you to read God's word
- 0:31with me. So that friend, is what we are
- 0:33going to do. And this week we will finish off
- 0:37this wonderful, insightful, majestical, thank you very much
- 0:41hunt for the Wilder People and incredible book.
- 0:45And it will continue to lay out this foundation, this argument
- 0:49to say that Jesus is supreme and that Jesus sacrifice is supreme
- 0:54for everything that we could possibly need.
- 0:58So we quiet our hearts and come before God to hear what He has
- 1:03to teach us. In the words of Hebrew chapter
- 1:0710, the old system under the law of Moses was only a shadow, a
- 1:21dim preview of the good things to come, not the good things
- 1:25themselves. The sacrifices under that system
- 1:29were repeated again and again, year after year, but they were
- 1:33never able to provide perfect cleansing for those who came to
- 1:36worship. If they could have provided
- 1:39perfect cleansing, the sacrifices would have stopped,
- 1:42for the worshippers would have been purified once and for all,
- 1:45and the feelings of guilt would have disappeared.
- 1:48But instead, those sacrifices actually reminded them of their
- 1:52sins year after year. For it is not possible for the
- 1:56blood of bulls and goats to take away sins.
- 1:59That is why when Christ came into the world, He said to God,
- 2:04You did not want animal sacrifices or sin offerings, but
- 2:08you have given me a body to offer.
- 2:11You were not pleased with burnt offerings or other offerings for
- 2:14sin. Then I said, look, I have come
- 2:18to do your will, O God, as is written about me in the
- 2:23Scriptures. First Christ said you did not
- 2:29want animal sacrifices or sin offerings, or burnt offerings or
- 2:32other offerings for sin, nor were you pleased with them,
- 2:37though they are required by the law of Moses.
- 2:40Then he said, look, I have come to do your will.
- 2:46He cancels the first covenant in order to put the second into
- 2:50effect. For God's will was for us to be
- 2:54made holy by the sacrifice of the body of Jesus Christ once
- 2:59for all time. Under the Old Covenant, the
- 3:03priest stands and ministers before the altar day after day,
- 3:07offering the same sacrifices again and again, which can never
- 3:11take away sins. But our High priest offered
- 3:15himself to God as a single sacrifice for sins good for all
- 3:20time. Then he sat down in the place of
- 3:23honour at God's right hand. There he waits until his enemies
- 3:28are humbled and made a footstool under his feet.
- 3:31For by that one offering he forever made perfect those who
- 3:36are being made holy. And the Holy Spirit also
- 3:40testifies that this is so. For he says, This is the new
- 3:45covenant I will make with my people on that day, says the
- 3:49Lord. I will put my laws in their
- 3:51hearts, and I will write them on their minds.
- 3:56Then he says, I will never again remember their sins and lawless
- 4:00deeds. And when sins have been
- 4:03forgiven, there is no need to offer any more sacrifices.
- 4:08And so, dear brothers and sisters, we can boldly enter
- 4:12Heaven's Most Holy place because of the blood of Jesus.
- 4:16By his death, Jesus opened a new and life, giving way through the
- 4:21curtain into the Most Holy Place.
- 4:24And since we have a great High Priest who rules over God's
- 4:27house, let us go right into the presence of God with sincere
- 4:31hearts, fully trusting Him. For our guilty consciences have
- 4:36been sprinkled with Christ's blood to make us clean, and our
- 4:40bodies have been washed with pure water.
- 4:44Let us hold tightly, without wavering to the hope we affirm,
- 4:48for God can be trusted to keep His promise.
- 4:52Let us think of ways to motivate one another to acts of love and
- 4:56good works. And let us not neglect our
- 4:58meeting together, as some people do, but encourage one another,
- 5:02especially now that the day of his return is drawing near.
- 5:06Dear friends, if we deliberately continue sinning after we have
- 5:11received knowledge of the truth, there is no longer any sacrifice
- 5:16that will cover these sins. There is only the terrible
- 5:19expectation of God's judgement and the raging fire that will
- 5:23consume His enemies. For anyone who refused to obey
- 5:27the law of Moses was put to death without mercy on the
- 5:30testimony of two or three witnesses.
- 5:33Just think how much worse the punishment will be for those
- 5:36have trampled on the Son of God and have treated the blood of
- 5:40the covenant which made us holy as if it were common and unholy,
- 5:46and have insulted and disdained the Holy Spirit who brings God's
- 5:51mercy to us. For we know the one who says, I
- 5:55will take revenge, I will pay them back.
- 5:59He also said the Lord will judge his own people.
- 6:04It is a terrible thing to fall into the hands of the living
- 6:07God. Think back on those early days
- 6:10when you first learned about Christ.
- 6:13Remember how you remained faithful even though it meant
- 6:16terrible suffering. Sometimes you were exposed to
- 6:20public ridicule and were beaten, and sometimes you helped others
- 6:24who were suffering the same things.
- 6:26You suffered along with those who were thrown into gaol.
- 6:30And when all you owned was taken from you, you accepted it with
- 6:34joy. You knew there were better
- 6:36things waiting for you that will last forever.
- 6:39So do not throw away this confident trust in the Lord.
- 6:43Remember the great reward it brings you.
- 6:46Patient endurance is what you need now so that you will
- 6:50continue to do God's will. Then you will receive all that
- 6:54He has promised for in just a little while.
- 6:58The coming One will come and not delay.
- 7:01And my righteous ones will live by faith.
- 7:05But I will take no pleasure in anyone who turns away.
- 7:12But we are not like those who turn away from God to their own
- 7:15destruction. We are the faithful ones whose
- 7:18souls will be saved. Oh Jesus, what a beautiful and
- 7:33sobering chapter this is. Lord, in this chapter you tell
- 7:38us that as we are being transformed by you and
- 7:42everything you've done for us, so we are perfect.
- 7:46It's not a slow, gradual chipping away of sin, but it is
- 7:51a complete transformation that you offer us and that once we
- 7:56are cleansed that we remain in your sanctified promise,
- 8:02continually sanctified. Our Jesus, You remind us that we
- 8:07should not abuse this and go on doing the wrong thing because we
- 8:11know we've got a sweet deal in you and that you'll continue to
- 8:14forgive us and that we need perseverance, ongoing
- 8:18perseverance to continually daily return to you, commit
- 8:23ourselves to you, and living for you.
- 8:27So Jesus, that is what we do. We stand before you so grateful
- 8:33that you have transformed us and made us pure and blameless
- 8:38through you in the Father's presence.
- 8:41And help us continue to stand in that promise and live for you,
- 8:47our beautiful, wonderful Saviour, through whom all things
- 8:52are made and for whom all things are.
- 8:56We love you and we pray all of this in your name, Jesus, Amen.
