- 0:12Hello friends. Sean here.
- 0:14Thank you for tapping on play and welcoming me into your day.
- 0:17This is a chapter, a day Bible reading.
- 0:21And that is what we do each day in this glorious time of year.
- 0:26Oh my goodness. I don't know what the weather is
- 0:28like for you right now, but hard down here in southern Tasley,
- 0:32summer is glorious. Not too hot, oh boy.
- 0:35People in Sydney were talking about, you know, close to 40°
- 0:38and humid. But here's Summer means mid 20s,
- 0:42sunny days. The grass is growing.
- 0:44There always seems to be a game of cricket to watch or play in
- 0:49the backyard. How long?
- 0:52Days and evenings it is just the best.
- 0:55So I am enjoying a glorious summer and I hope that you are
- 1:00going well, enjoying whatever this glorious planet of ours is
- 1:04delivering to you, whether wise. But here we are and we are going
- 1:08to continue through the story in Samuel of the new King Saul, and
- 1:14unfortunately it all starts to go a little bit wrong.
- 1:17But that is the way it's going to be.
- 1:20And this, this is a time in the Bible when you and I in Sunday
- 1:24School, if we used to go to Sunday school, would learn about
- 1:27the Philistines. They were like the
- 1:29quintessential bad guys facing off against God's people all the
- 1:33time. And this is the part of the
- 1:34Bible where we really do hear stories of Philistia and the
- 1:39Philistines. And this is where that that
- 1:42people starts to really kind of solidify their their place in
- 1:47Sunday School folklore. And then we're going to get to
- 1:49David and Goliath, which is kind of the linchpin of all of the
- 1:54the Philistine stories. But we're not quite there yet.
- 1:57Nope. We are just beginning to see
- 1:58those problems. So join me as we read this
- 2:02wonderful story hearing about God's King, how he leads his
- 2:07people through this time as we read together.
- 2:09First Samuel, Chapter 13. Saul was 30 years old when he
- 2:24became king, and he reigned for 42 years.
- 2:28Soul selected 3000 special trips from the army of Israel and sent
- 2:33the rest of the men home. He took 2000 of the chosen men
- 2:37with him to Michmash and the Hill Country of Bethel.
- 2:41The other 1000 went with Saul's son Jonathan to Gibier in the
- 2:45land of Benjamin. Soon after this, Jonathan
- 2:49attacked and defeated the Garrison of Philistines at Giba.
- 2:53The news spread quickly among the Philistines, so Saul blew
- 2:58the Rams horn throughout the land, saying Hebrews hear this
- 3:03rise up in revolt. All Israel heard the news that
- 3:07Saul had destroyed the Philistine Garrison at Giba and
- 3:11that the Philistines now hated the Israelites more than ever.
- 3:15So the entire Israelite army was summoned to join Saul at Gilgal.
- 3:21The Philistines mustered a mighty army of 3000 Chariots,
- 3:256000 charioteers, and as many warriors as the grains of sand
- 3:31on the seashore. They camped at Michmash, east of
- 3:35Beth Avon. The men of Israel saw what a
- 3:38tight spot they were in, and because they were hard pressed
- 3:41by the enemy, they tried to hide in caves, thickets, rocks, holes
- 3:45and cisterns. Some of them crossed the Jordan
- 3:48River and escaped to the land of Gad and Gilead.
- 3:53Meanwhile, Saul stayed at Gilgal and his men were trembling with
- 3:57fear. Saw waited their seven days for
- 4:01Samuel, as Samuel had instructed him earlier.
- 4:04But Samuel still didn't come. Saul realised that his troops
- 4:08were rapidly slipping away. So he demanded bring me the
- 4:12burnt offering and the peace offerings and soul sacrifice the
- 4:16burnt offering himself. Just as soul finishing the burnt
- 4:20offering, Samuel arrived. Saul went out to meet and
- 4:24welcomed him. But Samuel said, What is this
- 4:27you have done, Soul replied. I saw my men scattering from me,
- 4:33and you didn't arrive when you said you would, and the
- 4:35Philistines were at Michmash, ready for battle.
- 4:38So I said, the Philistines are ready to March against us at
- 4:41Gilgal. Then I haven't even asked for
- 4:44the Lord's help, so I felt compelled to offer the burnt
- 4:47offering myself before you came. How foolish, Samuel exclaimed.
- 4:54You have not kept the command the Lord your God gave you.
- 4:58Had you kept it, the Lord would have established your kingship
- 5:02over Israel forever. But now your Kingdom must end,
- 5:07for the Lord has sought out a man after his own heart.
- 5:11The Lord has already appointed him to be the leader of his
- 5:15people, because you have not kept the Lord's command.
- 5:19Samuel then left Gilgal and went on his way, But the rest of the
- 5:24troops went with Saul to meet the army.
- 5:26They went up from Gilgal to Gibier in the land of Benjamin.
- 5:31When Saul counted the men who were still with him, he found
- 5:34only 600 were left. Saul and Jonathan and the troops
- 5:38with them were staying at Gibber in the land of Benjamin.
- 5:42The Philistine set up their camp at Michmash 3.
- 5:46Raiding parties soon left the camp of the Philistines.
- 5:49One went N toward Ofra in the land of Shewell, the other went
- 5:54W to Beth Horan, and the third moved toward the border above
- 5:59the valley of Zeboim, near the wilderness.
- 6:02There were no blacksmiths in the land of Israel in those days.
- 6:06The Philistines wouldn't allow them, for fear.
- 6:08They would make swords and Spears for the Hebrews.
- 6:12O whenever the Israelites needed to sharpen their ploughshares,
- 6:15picks, axes or sickles, they had to take them to a Philistine
- 6:20blacksmith. The charges were as follows. 1/4
- 6:25of an ounce of silver for sharpening A ploughshare or a
- 6:28pick, and an eighth of an ounce for sharpening an axe or making
- 6:32the point of an ox goad. O on the day of the battle, none
- 6:36of the people of Israel had a sword or spear, except for Saul
- 6:41and Jonathan. The pass at Mick Mash had
- 6:44meanwhile been secured by a contingent of the Philistine
- 6:47army. Our Lord, as we read this story,
- 7:02we can relate, not relate, to what it feels like to be an
- 7:05enormous, enormous king of a nation.
- 7:08But but that when we think we're doing the right thing, we know
- 7:13what you've asked us to do. We feel, we feel your prompting,
- 7:17but we think that we know better and surely our idea is right,
- 7:22isn't it? And we act, and then we find out
- 7:26that no, it wasn't right, that that our conscience was
- 7:30prompting us, that that your word had told us a different
- 7:34way, that we didn't think was right.
- 7:38Lord, continually humble us so that we would always place you
- 7:43first, even when our logical human minds are telling us that
- 7:47we're right. You are a magnificent God with
- 7:53ways beyond our understanding. Help us always defer to you, for
- 7:59you are our wise and all knowing God, and also a forgiving and
- 8:05loving God for the times when we get it all wrong.
- 8:09Thank you for your forgiveness, thank you for your love, and
- 8:12thank you that you draw us into your family as your beloved
- 8:17children. We pray all this through Jesus,
- 8:21in whose name all of this is possible.
- 8:24Amen.
