ONELEGUPALEX MEDIA AND PAGS PERSPECTIVE CONGRATULATE DON MATTINGLY 5-13-26 · OneLegUpAlex Sports

• 0:00
Speaker 1: This one by madding like, oh, hang onto the road.
• 0:04
Speaker 2: Good. Well that was from the Alds in nineteen ninety five,
• 0:15
Speaker 2: and I wanted to say hang on to the roof,
• 0:17
Speaker 2: because I believe here at one leg up alex Media,
• 0:20
Speaker 2: that nine hundred career managerial wins for Don Mattingly is
• 0:25
Speaker 2: actually not the ceiling for him. I think he can
• 0:28
Speaker 2: win one hundred more and go to one thousand. But
• 0:30
Speaker 2: you look at what's happened since he took over for Philly.
• 0:35
Speaker 2: It's been a maddingly special Okay, he's turned it around.
• 0:38
Speaker 2: They're seven and through their last ten. They've now been
• 0:41
Speaker 2: now two games under five hundred after letting go another
• 0:45
Speaker 2: former Yankee coach, Rob Thompson, who I got to know
• 0:48
Speaker 2: over the years of Yankee Stadium. But and I kind
• 0:50
Speaker 2: of feel sad that that went south with him. I
• 0:52
Speaker 2: thought he was actually a decent manager, but Philly needed
• 0:55
Speaker 2: a change and who they turned to the hitman, Dom Mattingley.
• 0:59
Speaker 2: And you know what's pretty cool, as I saw a
• 1:01
Speaker 2: video the other day of maddingly running a clinic with
• 1:05
Speaker 2: Bryce Harper at first base, So yeah, he's in full
• 1:08
Speaker 2: on managerial mode. And you know, Ryan Pagano, we were
• 1:11
Speaker 2: all hoping he would get that ring with the Blue
• 1:14
Speaker 2: Jays last year. We all thought that was it was like,
• 1:16
Speaker 2: it's forty nine or fifty the year in the league.
• 1:19
Speaker 2: Maybe this was the time to get the chip. Of course,
• 1:21
Speaker 2: the Dodgers had other plans. But it's good to see
• 1:23
Speaker 2: him still in baseball for a year fifty and beyond
• 1:25
  Speaker 2: right now.
• 1:26
Speaker 3: Yeah, because normally you don't really have a lot of
• 1:29
Speaker 3: these guys making it to year number fifty involved in
• 1:32
Speaker 3: professional baseball. The fact that he has had such longevity,
• 1:36
Speaker 3: and not even just with his playing career as time
• 1:38
Speaker 3: in the minor leagues, but then you also go back
• 1:40
Speaker 3: to his time as Yankees hitting coach under Joe Tory,
• 1:43
Speaker 3: when Tory went to the Dodgers ahead of a wait,
• 1:47
Speaker 3: maddingly going there with him and then eventually taking the
• 1:49
Speaker 3: Dodgers' managerial job when Tory retired for good after twenty ten.
• 1:53
Speaker 3: I mean, to see him have that kind of longevity,
• 1:56
Speaker 3: it's it's crazy again, you don't see that anymore. But
• 1:59
Speaker 3: it's also just as much a travesty that he doesn't
• 2:03
Speaker 3: have a ring now with all the talented Yankee teams
• 2:05
Speaker 3: that he was a part of, but also being a
• 2:08
Speaker 3: coach of some of the.
• 2:09
Speaker 1: More talented teams of the twenty tens.
• 2:12
Speaker 2: Absolutely, And I'll tell you the other thing about all
• 2:15
  Speaker 2: of this is he's he's a decent guy. I met
• 2:18
Speaker 2: him at Pinchry Pride. I met him at the MB store,
• 2:21
Speaker 2: and he just he's funny. I know last year was
• 2:24
Speaker 2: a little tired after that al of that World Series,
• 2:26
Speaker 2: but he still went to the MOB store. But he's
• 2:28
Speaker 2: a great dude. And you know, my memory with him
• 2:31
Speaker 2: also is when he was Miami manager. It was the
• 2:33
Speaker 2: same week that I guess gian Carlo was either traded
• 2:38
Speaker 2: out or something, and then all of a sudden, Jeter
• 2:40
Speaker 2: owns the team in that same week. It was just
• 2:42
Speaker 2: a crazy week. And he tells me, Yeah, baseball's crazy,
• 2:47
Speaker 2: isn't it. And I said, yes, it is, sir, and
• 2:48
Speaker 2: then he just walked away. But no, he's always been
• 2:51
Speaker 2: personable with me, and I'm very happy. And I got
• 2:53
Speaker 2: to give a shout out to Ray Schulti and joelmn Pros,
• 2:56
Speaker 2: who are very close with him and in fact are
• 2:58
Speaker 2: running a Hitman hangout this upcoming July in Philadelphia. I'll
• 3:04
Speaker 2: put the date in the description below, but yeah, you
• 3:06
Speaker 2: get a chance to hang out with the hit man
• 3:07
Speaker 2: himself in Philly and got to also highlight Manningly twenty
• 3:11
Speaker 2: three vintage on Instagram for continuing their great work, and
• 3:17
Speaker 2: of course Manningly Charity's always active on there as well.
• 3:21
Speaker 2: But our guy Don Manningly nine hundred Managero wins, and
• 3:24
Speaker 2: he did it so quietly, you know what I mean, Right,
• 3:26
Speaker 2: You wouldn't expect it until you got that notification.
• 3:29
Speaker 3: Yeah, you certainly wouldn't have expected that until you you know,
• 3:33
Speaker 3: you really had to see it to kind of believe it.
• 3:36
Speaker 3: And especially with his Marlins tenure, and I mean you
• 3:40
Speaker 3: could say what you want about the ownership of the
• 3:43
Speaker 3: team at that point in the end and the fact
• 3:46
Speaker 3: that they changed hands a couple times to my recollection.
• 3:49
Speaker 3: But now even with the lack of talent at his
• 3:52
Speaker 3: disposal on some of those Marlins teams of the late
• 3:55
Speaker 3: twenty tens, especially after that John Carlo trade, and then
• 3:58
Speaker 3: those are some bad Marlins, don't get me wrong, But
• 4:01
Speaker 3: that also goes to show that it's not on Maaddingly
• 4:03
Speaker 3: at all whatsoever. I mean, he's just doing what he
• 4:05
Speaker 3: can in the end with the talents.
• 4:08
Speaker 2: Almost fel bad from m during the Miami or.
• 4:10
Speaker 3: I haves a fan of a division rival, how could
• 4:13
Speaker 3: he not feel bad for him?
• 4:14
Speaker 1: I mean he almost took them over five hundred.
• 4:17
Speaker 2: A couple by the way, this is this is the
• 4:19
Speaker 2: year for the Phillies. Okay, so twenty two was special
• 4:21
Speaker 2: for them. They go on that run, that that song,
• 4:26
Speaker 2: you know they were writing on that song as well,
• 4:29
Speaker 2: but a dance on my own. But no, they literally
• 4:31
Speaker 2: were dancing into the World Series. But they have that
• 4:34
Speaker 2: same team still this year pretty much, right, so.
• 4:36
Speaker 1: More or less minus a couple missing pieces.
• 4:38
Speaker 3: Of course, you know Cassia Rangers Suarez ain't there, and
• 4:43
Speaker 3: even some of the other heroes from that twenty two
• 4:46
Speaker 3: team just not really looking like the same players that
• 4:49
Speaker 3: they were. I mean, yeah, Bryce Harper is still playing
• 4:50
Speaker 3: at an elite level, don't get me wrong there. But
• 4:53
Speaker 3: you know, then you also look at the rotation may
• 4:56
Speaker 3: go down and Wheeler might not be the same and
• 5:00
Speaker 3: same thing with Aaron Noley definitely wasn't what he was
• 5:02
  Speaker 3: in anyway.
• 5:04
Speaker 2: This is their core. This is the moment. If you're
• 5:06
Speaker 2: the Phillies, you want to win because I think if
• 5:07
Speaker 2: they don't do it, the year they're gonna break up.
• 5:09
Speaker 2: The team. That's just how I'm feeling about it.
• 5:10
Speaker 3: I Mean, we already thought that was gonna be the
• 5:12
Speaker 3: case going into the offseason. Anyway, when the whole off
• 5:14
Speaker 3: season drama with Nick Castillanos was more or less revealed
• 5:19
Speaker 3: to the public, and especially with the Zach Wheeler injury too,
• 5:23
Speaker 3: it might have forced their hand. But you know, I'll
• 5:25
Speaker 3: give them credit where it's due for at least staying
• 5:28
Speaker 3: the course and figuring things out now. Albeit that is
• 5:33
Speaker 3: of course without Rob Thompson, and you know, seeing the
• 5:36
Speaker 3: success that he had in New York, it definitely is
• 5:38
Speaker 3: a shame to see him go out the way that
• 5:40
Speaker 3: he did, But it also proves just how much a
• 5:45
Speaker 3: managerial change can shake things up in the right direction,
• 5:47
Speaker 3: something that my own team may or may not have.
• 5:51
Speaker 1: Gotten the memo about. But that's the same story.
• 5:54
Speaker 2: I mean, look, they're under they're just under two games
• 5:56
Speaker 2: under five hundred, which is remarkable to.
• 5:58
Speaker 3: Me considering how they where they were earlier in the
• 6:02
Speaker 3: season too. I mean, uh, I mean next to the
• 6:07
Speaker 3: Brave back on twelve game losing streak, they had the
• 6:09
  Speaker 3: longest in base.
• 6:10
Speaker 2: Braves almost look on subble right now, and that was
• 6:13
  Speaker 2: interesting of.
• 6:13
Speaker 1: Itself, courtesy of the Met's former coaches, of course.
• 6:16
Speaker 2: But but Phillies have a real chance to be in
• 6:20
Speaker 2: the playoffs now, and you know what if they do
• 6:22
Speaker 2: get there and go to the World Series and maybe
• 6:24
Speaker 2: win it. I don't know if that's gonna happen, but
• 6:26
Speaker 2: you know it could be a Jack McKeon style turnaround.
• 6:28
Speaker 2: Remember he took over the the Marlins from Jeff Torborg
• 6:33
Speaker 2: in two thousand and three around the same time, around
• 6:35
Speaker 2: the same time, and brought them all the way to
• 6:37
Speaker 2: the World Series. So we'll have to see what happens.
• 6:40
Speaker 2: I want to do a couple other notes here on
• 6:41
Speaker 2: one look up alex Media Sports. Apparently, according to Mike
• 6:46
Speaker 2: Gallagher Show, John Cornan wants to rename highway in Texas
• 6:51
Speaker 2: in honor of Donald Trump to get his endorsement. Just
• 6:54
Speaker 2: don't rename the Nolan Ryan Expressway. Please keep that intact.
• 6:59
Speaker 2: That needs to stay. He's a legend in Texas. Do
• 7:02
Speaker 2: not touch the Nolan Ryan Expressway. But I want to
• 7:05
Speaker 2: stay on the Diamond. We are now at May thirteenth,
• 7:10
Speaker 2: and I know it was a bad weekend for the Yankees,
• 7:12
Speaker 2: and I know the Knicks are dominating the headlines with
• 7:14
Speaker 2: their sweep right now of the Sixers in a very
• 7:18
Speaker 2: long rest because that series with caviin leaders and Detroit's
• 7:21
Speaker 2: going to probably six or seven, at least six. I
• 7:24
Speaker 2: might go seven, but I digress. Underneath it all, the Yankees,
• 7:30
Speaker 2: despite their struggles of reason and their injuries, are at
• 7:33
Speaker 2: twenty seven wins before mid May. We are literally seeing
• 7:37
Speaker 2: a Yankee team without a Rodan, without a Coal and
• 7:41
Speaker 2: a lineup that basically was run back from last year,
• 7:44
Speaker 2: banged up a bit because there's on Carlo Cabby now
• 7:48
Speaker 2: Jayson Diminge is out, won't be called back up. But
• 7:51
Speaker 2: they're almost at thirty wins. How did anybody expect that
• 7:55
Speaker 2: mid May they could be at forty something wins by
• 7:57
Speaker 2: a boy all day. That is unheard of. Sometimes it's crazy.
• 8:01
Speaker 3: And just the fact that they're right up there with
• 8:04
Speaker 3: the Rays at twenty eight wins too, is just remarkable.
• 8:07
Speaker 1: And then you also consider the season that the.
• 8:09
Speaker 3: Rays had just last season, you know, losing their home,
• 8:12
Speaker 3: having to play in ironically Steinburner Field, So I'm sure
• 8:15
Speaker 3: that definitely threw a wrench into the team's plans just
• 8:18
Speaker 3: last year. But then next thing, you know, moving back
• 8:20
Speaker 3: into the trap they're right back where they were, right
• 8:22
Speaker 3: back where they are competing with the Yankees for the division,
• 8:26
Speaker 3: as it probably should be. And especially the fact, and
• 8:31
Speaker 3: I just want to highlight to the fact that the Yankees,
• 8:33
Speaker 3: as you had eloquently put it, Alex, that they're doing
• 8:36
Speaker 3: this with essentially the same team, with more injuries, more
• 8:40
Speaker 3: key players out compared to last season.
• 8:43
Speaker 2: Maybe just get Ben Rice more playing time.
• 8:44
Speaker 1: That's the answer, exactly.
• 8:45
Speaker 3: And a lot of that, I would say definitely has
• 8:48
Speaker 3: to do with the development of Ben Rice, no question
• 8:51
  Speaker 3: about it.
• 8:52
Speaker 1: I mean, he has been the big bat that the.
• 8:55
Speaker 3: Yanks have been looking for at the hot corner, and yeah,
• 8:58
Speaker 3: they got a little bit of that with gold Schmid
• 9:00
  Speaker 3: last year.
• 9:01
Speaker 1: And you know, he'll he'll still contribute off the bench
• 9:03
Speaker 1: where he needs to.
• 9:04
Speaker 3: But you know, at the same time, we are talking
• 9:06
Speaker 3: about thirty five or so year old Paul gold Smith.
• 9:09
  Speaker 2: That's true.
• 9:09
Speaker 1: He's not really going to give you that, but he
• 9:11
  Speaker 1: can be.
• 9:11
Speaker 2: You know, I was like, why are they leading him off?
• 9:13
Speaker 2: But he actually looks like a solid leadoff hit or
• 9:14
Speaker 2: what he's in there. I mean, yeah, I.
• 9:16
Speaker 3: Mean he's still going to provide value to your team regardless.
• 9:18
Speaker 3: And you know the fact that the Yankees are executing
• 9:22
Speaker 3: that perfectly, allowing gold Schmid to come through in these
• 9:25
Speaker 3: big moments every now and then coming off the bench
• 9:27
Speaker 3: and you know, maybe not having a starting spot every day,
• 9:31
Speaker 3: right and seeding those opportunities to Ben Rice.
• 9:34
Speaker 1: That has helped them a lot.
• 9:35
Speaker 3: And especially too, with Spencer Jones now being up and
• 9:38
Speaker 3: he's taking a little bit of time to get adjusted, I.
• 9:40
Speaker 2: Wonder if that's interrupted the chemistry of the lineup, because
• 9:44
Speaker 2: you know, even with a healthy Gaselle, the lineup was
• 9:46
Speaker 2: still clicking a bit. Jones comes up and I think
• 9:49
Speaker 2: it's great they call him up. It was about time.
• 9:52
Speaker 2: But he does throw a bit of a wrench into
• 9:53
Speaker 2: that lineup right now, especially if he's struggling a little bit.
• 9:55
Speaker 2: So we'll see he's got to stop pressing and he's
• 9:57
Speaker 2: just got to go with the flow of it. And
• 9:59
Speaker 2: I think he wants to get that first homer so badly,
• 10:02
  Speaker 2: so badly.
• 10:03
Speaker 3: Oh he does, and you know you can't really fault
• 10:06
Speaker 3: to him, not but really, you just gotta go back
• 10:09
Speaker 3: to the Joe Tory style where all you got to
• 10:13
Speaker 3: say to yourself just gonna single.
• 10:16
Speaker 2: Well, that's the thing. They are old they are winning
• 10:17
Speaker 2: without the homer a lot of the games. That's the
• 10:19
Speaker 2: other improvement. And you talk about Toria five out saves
• 10:22
Speaker 2: become a thing again. So and I love Bennar, but
• 10:25
Speaker 2: I tell you mentioned Bryce, and Bennar was also in
• 10:28
Speaker 2: the World Baseball that game Tire against Venezuela. That'll be
• 10:32
Speaker 2: the biggest home run he ever hit. I'm sorry, I
• 10:34
Speaker 2: know it's not a Major League Baseball game, but that
• 10:36
Speaker 2: was the biggest homers.
• 10:37
Speaker 3: Hit, even bigger than twenty twenty two NLCS Game five.
• 10:40
Speaker 2: Agreed, because that was an American thing, you know what
• 10:43
  Speaker 2: I mean.
• 10:44
Speaker 1: That's and I see where you're coming from.
• 10:46
Speaker 3: I mean, just because the US didn't win, I'm not
• 10:50
Speaker 3: necessarily sure, at least.
• 10:52
Speaker 1: For me, if I could put it in my top
• 10:55
  Speaker 1: one spot.
• 10:55
Speaker 3: You know, maybe if the US ended up winning and
• 10:59
Speaker 3: that homer would perhaps be looked upon as the turning
• 11:02
Speaker 3: point that helped the US win, I could definitely see that.
• 11:06
Speaker 1: But and you know that it's gotta be ke.
• 11:10
Speaker 2: It was every Yankees dream. You have Judge, Bryce and
• 11:14
Speaker 2: Schwarber in the same line up. Sign me up for
• 11:16
  Speaker 2: that every night.
• 11:17
Speaker 3: Come on, now, that would have been that would be
• 11:19
Speaker 3: something I mean then you'd have the Bronx Bombers let
• 11:21
Speaker 3: me up to their moniker, and then some.
• 11:23
Speaker 2: So well have see. But congrats Donnie Baseball dom matically
• 11:26
Speaker 2: nine hundred career wins. He's actually the sixth active. Tito
• 11:29
Speaker 2: Francona is still around aj hinches on that list as well.
• 11:33
Speaker 2: Uh maybe you know the rest of him. I only
• 11:34
Speaker 2: saw a few of the names on that list, but
• 11:36
Speaker 2: now off the top of my head, unfortunately, but very cool.
• 11:38
Speaker 2: So he's the sixth active to be nine hundred career wins.
• 11:42
Speaker 2: Well deserving and just a great guy. And yes, the
• 11:46
Speaker 2: turnaround of the Philadelphia Phillies cannot be ignored at one
• 11:48
Speaker 2: lag up alex Media.
• 11:49
Speaker 4: It is a turnaround in a short time, by the way, yeah, no,
• 11:52
Speaker 4: no question about it, from being in the cellar of
• 11:55
Speaker 4: the NLS to next thing, you know, suddenly fighting for
• 11:59
  Speaker 4: a wildcard.
• 11:59
Speaker 2: And we know Philly sports. Okay, so they just had
• 12:01
Speaker 2: the Sixers get ousted by the Knicks and.
• 12:03
Speaker 1: Four you have the Flyers the same with them.
• 12:06
Speaker 2: But they the Flyers gave the city hope actually a
• 12:08
Speaker 2: lot more than people give them credit for.
• 12:10
Speaker 1: Well they actually did, because you look at it this way.
• 12:13
Speaker 3: Coming back from the Olympic Break, I believe a less
• 12:15
Speaker 3: than four percent chance right to make the playoffs and
• 12:19
Speaker 3: single handedly banquishing the Islanders playoff hopes with that four
• 12:23
Speaker 3: to one victory on Good Friday, I mean, how could
• 12:27
Speaker 3: you not captivate the city through that, and not only that,
• 12:29
Speaker 3: but winning the Battle of Pennsylvania correct the first round.
• 12:32
Speaker 1: Winning a playoff series for the first time since I
• 12:35
  Speaker 1: believe it.
• 12:36
Speaker 3: Was twenty twenty, the last time they won a playoff series,
• 12:40
Speaker 3: doing that for the first time in six years with
• 12:41
Speaker 3: the team that wasn't even projected to go anywhere, and
• 12:44
Speaker 3: it wasn't too long that they were talking about selling
• 12:46
Speaker 3: at the deadline. The way they were able to do
• 12:48
Speaker 3: what they did, how could it not captivate the city
• 12:52
  Speaker 3: like that?
• 12:52
Speaker 1: And it's been such a good story to see.
• 12:55
Speaker 2: And I think the Phillies did the right move at
• 12:58
Speaker 2: the right time because and we'll wrap this up in
• 13:00
Speaker 2: a second, but because, uh, as the Sixers and Flyers
• 13:06
Speaker 2: playoff series was winding down, you know, if Rob Thompson
• 13:10
Speaker 2: was still manager, and they might have still been on this.
• 13:12
Speaker 2: If Thompson was still manager, they would have been calling
• 13:15
Speaker 2: for his ousting. If it was just a Philly baseball
• 13:18
Speaker 2: right now. But now Philly fans can enjoy this for
• 13:21
Speaker 2: the next few months before they stress about Eagles games,
• 13:23
Speaker 2: you know, so we'll have to see what.
• 13:24
Speaker 3: Happens that's coming up soon at least before they have
• 13:27
Speaker 3: to stress about if the new OC will be better
• 13:30
  Speaker 3: than Kevin Pittulo.
• 13:32
Speaker 2: Well, all right, on that note, more to come at
• 13:34
Speaker 2: One Leg Up Alex Media, and I just want to
• 13:38
Speaker 2: make this one note. On May thirteenth, twenty fourteen, yours
• 13:45
Speaker 2: truly wrote one day at a time, striving to have
• 13:48
Speaker 2: one leg up in this world. Well May thirteen, twenty
• 13:52
Speaker 2: twenty six, it's one leg Up alex Media, still striving
• 13:56
Speaker 2: to have one leg up on this world and help
• 13:58
