- 0:00Let me ask you something, and I want you to be brutally honest
- 0:03with yourself. When was the last time you told
- 0:05someone the truth about how you're really doing?
- 0:07Not the polite version, not the church version, not the I'm fine
- 0:12God's good version. I mean the truth that's been
- 0:15sitting in your chest for weeks. The truth that you push down
- 0:19during the day and wrestle with at night as you're lying in bed.
- 0:23The truth that you don't want anyone else to see.
- 0:25Because here's what I've learned.
- 0:27Some of the strongest, most capable, most responsible people
- 0:31that you know are quietly falling apart on the inside, not
- 0:35because they want to suffer, but because they've been convinced
- 0:38of a lie. A lie that says I should be able
- 0:41to handle this alone. But what if that lie was the
- 0:44very thing that was keeping you stuck?
- 0:47What if the healing that you have been praying for is on the
- 0:51other side of a conversation that you've never had?
- 0:54Today, today we're going to talk about that.
- 1:01Welcome to Unmasked, the podcast where we peel back the layers
- 1:04and we hide behind a step into the kind of honesty that leads
- 1:08to real freedom. I'm your host, Wesley
- 1:11Farnsworth, and today we're starting a new four part journey
- 1:14called The Power of Community. And in this first episode, we're
- 1:18confronting a lie that almost every one of us has believed at
- 1:21one point. And that lie is that I can
- 1:24handle this alone. So let's dig into it.
- 1:31This lie, This lie is sneaky because it disguises itself as
- 1:35maturity. It often sounds like
- 1:37responsibility, humility, or strength.
- 1:40We say things like, I don't want to burden anyone, People have
- 1:44enough going on, It's not that big a deal.
- 1:47I can handle it myself. I should be strong enough to get
- 1:50through this. But underneath all those
- 1:52sentences are lies of a deeper fear.
- 1:55And that fear says that if people really knew what I was
- 1:58carrying, they'd see me differently.
- 2:01So instead of risking vulnerability, we default to
- 2:03isolation. And we call it strength.
- 2:06But silence isn't strength, it's survival.
- 2:09And survival is not the life that God intended you to live.
- 2:13See, here's the truth about strong people.
- 2:15They're often the most isolated, not because they enjoy
- 2:18isolation, but because people assume that they don't need
- 2:22anything. You always seem so confident.
- 2:24You're the stable one, you're the leader, you're the
- 2:27encourager. You're the one that we depend
- 2:30on. Those are all things that they
- 2:32often hear. And slowly, without meaning to,
- 2:35your identity becomes wrapped up in being the strong one.
- 2:39So you don't let people see the cracks.
- 2:41You don't let people hear the fear.
- 2:43You don't admit the struggle. But something dangerous begins
- 2:46to happen over time. People stop checking on you
- 2:49because they assume that you don't need it.
- 2:51And you, you stop asking for help because you assume that you
- 2:55should need it. And if that's you, you're not
- 2:59failing. You're human.
- 3:01Even Jesus didn't walk alone. See, every one of us carry
- 3:04internal rooms that no one else sees.
- 3:07There are rooms for fear, rooms for disappointment, rooms for
- 3:11anxiety, rooms for mistakes, rooms for shame, rooms for
- 3:15unspoken pain, rooms for temptations or habits, and rooms
- 3:19for grief that you've never processed.
- 3:22Those rooms hold on to things that we don't want to talk
- 3:25about. We close the door, we hide the
- 3:27key, and we tell ourselves that I'm fine, I'll just deal with it
- 3:31later. But here's the truth.
- 3:33Hidden rooms don't shrink over time, they expand.
- 3:36Eventually, what's hiding on the inside begins leaking into
- 3:40everything else. Your peace.
- 3:42Your relationships, your sense of identity, your spiritual
- 3:46life. The isolation is not neutral,
- 3:49it's corrosive. So let me speak honestly from my
- 3:52own life, in general terms, but with complete authenticity.
- 3:56There was a long stretch of my life where I was surrounded by
- 3:58people, yet I lived internally alone.
- 4:02I was serving, I was leading, I was creating, I was helping
- 4:07others through their struggles. I was showing up in every way
- 4:10that I knew how. But on the inside, there were
- 4:13rooms that I never let anyone go into.
- 4:16Not because I was hiding from God, not because I didn't trust
- 4:19people, but because I believed that it was my responsibility to
- 4:23fix myself before involving anyone else.
- 4:26I didn't want to disappoint the people who looked up to me.
- 4:29I didn't want to add weight on anyone else's life.
- 4:32I didn't to be a burden. I didn't want to seem weak.
- 4:35And so I kept everything internalized.
- 4:38I kept it hidden away in those rooms, locked up, bolted shut,
- 4:42barricaded so that no one else could get in.
- 4:45And from the outside, it looked like I was doing great.
- 4:48But on the inside, man, I was exhausted.
- 4:51Maybe you know exactly what that feels like.
- 4:54See, isolation presents itself like a safe shelter, a private
- 4:58fortress where nothing and no one can hurt us.
- 5:01It convinces us that if we stay quiet, no one will judge us,
- 5:04misunderstand us, or reject us. It tells us the silence protects
- 5:09our image, and it Shields us from disappointment.
- 5:12The isolation hides its true cost.
- 5:14Overtime, that private fortress becomes a lonely prison.
- 5:18The walls don't keep paying out. They keep healing out.
- 5:21They don't bring peace. It amplifies fear, and the
- 5:26privacy doesn't lighten the burden.
- 5:28It makes the burden heavier. Isolation promises safety but
- 5:33delivers suffocation. It feels protective, but it
- 5:37becomes destructive. The Bible doesn't treat
- 5:40community as optional. It treats it as an essential
- 5:43Before sin even entered the world, before humanity was
- 5:47fractured, before mistakes or shame even existed, God said
- 5:51that it's not good for man to be alone.
- 5:54Think about that. Adam was a first human being
- 5:57ever created. When he was made, he was
- 5:59perfect. Adam wasn't broken, he wasn't
- 6:02sinful, He wasn't in crisis. He was just alone.
- 6:05And God saw it and said this is not good, and so he made woman.
- 6:10And in Ecclesiastes it tells us if one falls, another can help
- 6:14them up. But pity the one who falls with
- 6:16no one there. Notice it doesn't say if you
- 6:19fall because it assumes that you will, because falling is a part
- 6:23of being human. Sin is a part of being human.
- 6:26Proverbs warns us that the person who isolates themselves
- 6:30breaks out against all. Sound judgement in isolation
- 6:34warps perspective. In Galatians it calls us to
- 6:37carry each other's burdens, which implies that some burdens
- 6:41are too heavy for one person to carry.
- 6:43And in James 516 it tells us to confess your sins to one another
- 6:47and pray for each other so that you may be healed.
- 6:50The forgiveness comes from God. Healing often comes through
- 6:54people you were designed for. Connection and healing is meant,
- 7:00and healing isn't meant to be done in the dark.
- 7:04Before anything shifted my life, before things got better, before
- 7:08transformation began. There was a whisper, a quiet,
- 7:11steady, firm whisper that said you can't do this alone.
- 7:16At first I didn't want to hear it, because admitting that I
- 7:19needed people felt too vulnerable, way too risky, and
- 7:23far too unfamiliar. But God wasn't exposing
- 7:26weakness. He was inviting me into healing.
- 7:29He was pulling me out of shame. He was pulling me closer to him
- 7:34to restore me. Maybe he's whispering the same
- 7:37thing to you right now. If there's one tactic that the
- 7:40enemy depends on, it's isolation.
- 7:42He isolates before he destroys. He always has.
- 7:46When you're isolated, fear grows louder.
- 7:48Lies become more convincing. Shame grows heavier.
- 7:52Anxiety multiplies. Temptation increases.
- 7:55Hope drains out. Perspective collapses.
- 7:59Isolation is where the enemy's voice is the loudest.
- 8:03Because there's there's no other voice to challenge it.
- 8:05But community disrupts the enemy's plan.
- 8:08It brings truth into the places where lies have lived for far
- 8:13too long. Over the years, every
- 8:15transformation that I've seen, every breakthrough that I've
- 8:18experienced, all began with a single moment of courage.
- 8:22A moment when somebody said I'm not OK.
- 8:26Not a confession to an entire room.
- 8:28Not a dramatic breakdown. Just one honest sentence to one
- 8:33safe person. That moment cracks the door open
- 8:36and light only needs a crack to begin filling the room.
- 8:40It only takes a crack to begin to be able to take off your
- 8:43mask. So what are you carrying alone?
- 8:45Take a deep breath for a moment and ask yourself, really ask
- 8:49yourself, what have I been carrying alone?
- 8:52Is it a habit, A fear? A regret?
- 8:55A hidden grief? A weakness you hate?
- 8:57A temptation, A struggle that you can't name?
- 9:00A sadness you're embarrassed by, a pressure you've never
- 9:03admitted, A problem in your relationship, in your marriage,
- 9:07in your friendship. Whatever it is, hear me.
- 9:10Carrying it alone is costing you way more than you realize.
- 9:14And you don't have to keep doing that.
- 9:16Community brings clarity into your life by helping you see
- 9:20truth when your own thoughts feel foggy.
- 9:23It gives you the courage. Because standing with somebody
- 9:26else always feels less frightening than standing alone.
- 9:29Those things you're carrying alone will become easier when
- 9:33you're standing and fighting with somebody else.
- 9:35Healthy community also brings accountability, the gentle,
- 9:39loving kind that nudges you forward when you feel tempted to
- 9:43go backwards. It offers comfort by bringing
- 9:46you to a place that you can be heard, understood and supported.
- 9:51Community gives you strength by allowing others to lift what you
- 9:54can't carry alone when you're tired.
- 9:57It brings perspective. It helps you to see angles and
- 10:00possibilities that you would have missed on your own.
- 10:03Community restores hope as others remind you of what's true
- 10:06when your own hope is running low.
- 10:09And maybe most importantly, community gives you a sense of
- 10:12belonging, the deep assurance that you don't have to navigate
- 10:15life by yourself anymore. Friends, I've been there.
- 10:18I've tried to carry things alone.
- 10:20I've tried to fight my battles alone.
- 10:22I've tried to beat things alone. And it's hard and it weighs you
- 10:27down. It weighed me down.
- 10:28But community makes all the difference in the world.
- 10:31Having somebody that can lean on you, that having somebody that I
- 10:35can lean on made things a lot easier.
- 10:38When I was feeling down, they spoke life into me.
- 10:41They encouraged me and kept me moving forward even when I
- 10:44wanted to stop. So this week, I want you to take
- 10:47one step. I want you to say one honest
- 10:50sentence to one safe person. Just one.
- 10:53You don't have to share your whole story, you don't have to
- 10:56unpack everything. You don't have to relive the
- 10:59pain or explain the details. Just tell one person one honest
- 11:03thing. Because honesty breaks.
- 11:05Because honesty breaks isolation.
- 11:07And once the isolation is broken, then healing becomes
- 11:11possible. Thanks for joining me today for
- 11:18episode 25 of Unmasked and the first part of our series, The
- 11:22Power of Community. Next time we go deeper, episode
- 11:2527 is called Sacred Spaces, How honesty heals us.
- 11:29And we're going to talk about the environments that God uses
- 11:31to heal us, the kind of people who make vulnerability safe, and
- 11:35what happens when we finally stop hiding.
- 11:38Until then, I want you to remember that you were never
- 11:41meant to carry life alone. Healing begins with honesty, and
- 11:45honesty begins with connection. In connection, it begins with
- 11:49one brave step. God bless you.
