- 0:00SPEAKER_00: Genesis thirty-four The Rape of Dinah One day Dinah, the daughter of Leah and Jacob, went out to see the women of that place.
- 0:12SPEAKER_00: She was seen by Shechem, the son of Himor the Hivite, who ruled that area.
- 0:20SPEAKER_00: Shechem took Dinah and raped her, but he was so attracted to her that he fell in love and began expressing his feelings to her.
- 0:30SPEAKER_00: He told his father, please get this girl for me so that I can marry her.
- 0:37SPEAKER_00: Jacob learned that Shechem had done this very bad thing to his daughter, but all of his sons were out in the fields with the cattle.
- 0:48SPEAKER_00: So he did nothing until they came home.
- 0:52SPEAKER_00: Then Shechem's father, Hamor, came out to talk with Jacob.
- 0:57SPEAKER_00: In the fields Jacob's sons heard the news about what had happened.
- 1:04SPEAKER_00: They were very angry because Shechem had brought shame to Israel by raping Jacob's daughter.
- 1:12SPEAKER_00: They came in from the fields as soon as they heard about the terrible thing Shechem had done.
- 1:20SPEAKER_00: But Tamor talked to Dina's brothers and said, My son, Shechem wants Dinah very much.
- 1:29SPEAKER_00: Please let him marry her.
- 1:32SPEAKER_00: This marriage will show we have a special agreement.
- 1:37SPEAKER_00: Then our men can marry your women, and your men can marry our women.
- 1:46SPEAKER_00: You can live in the same land with us.
- 1:50SPEAKER_00: You will be free to own the land and to trade here.
- 1:56SPEAKER_00: Shechem also talked to Jacob and to Dina's brothers and said, Please accept me.
- 2:03SPEAKER_00: I will do anything you ask me to do.
- 2:06SPEAKER_00: I will give you any gift you want.
- 2:09SPEAKER_00: If you will only allow me to marry Dina, I will give you anything you ask, but let me marry her.
- 2:17SPEAKER_00: Jacob's sons decided to lie to Shechem and his father, because Shechem had done such a bad thing to their sister Dinah.
- 2:28SPEAKER_00: The brothers said to them, We cannot allow our sister to marry you because you are not yet circumcised.
- 2:37SPEAKER_00: That would bring us shame, but we will allow you to marry her if you do this one thing.
- 2:44SPEAKER_00: Every man in your town must be circumcised like us.
- 2:50SPEAKER_00: Then your men can marry our women and our men can marry your women.
- 2:57SPEAKER_00: Then we will become one people.
- 3:01SPEAKER_00: If you refuse to be circumcised, we will take Dinah away.
- 3:08SPEAKER_00: This agreement made Hamor and Shechem very happy.
- 3:12SPEAKER_00: Shechem was very happy to do what Dina's brothers asked.
- 3:17SPEAKER_00: Shechem was the most honored man in his family.
- 3:21SPEAKER_00: Hamor and Shechem went to the meeting place of their city.
- 3:26SPEAKER_00: They spoke to the men of the city and said These people want to be friends with us.
- 3:32SPEAKER_00: We want to let them live in our land and be at peace with us.
- 3:37SPEAKER_00: We have enough land for all of us.
- 3:39SPEAKER_00: We are free to marry their women, and we are happy to give them our women to marry.
- 3:46SPEAKER_00: But there is one thing that all of our men must agree to do.
- 3:51SPEAKER_00: They must agree to be circumcised as they are.
- 3:55SPEAKER_00: If we do this we will become rich from all of their cattle and other animals.
- 4:02SPEAKER_00: We should make this agreement with them so that they will stay here with us.
- 4:07SPEAKER_00: All the men who heard this in the meeting place agreed with Himor and Shechem, and every man was circumcised at that time.
- 4:18SPEAKER_00: Three days later the men who were circumcised were still sore.
- 4:24SPEAKER_00: Two of Jacob's sons, Simeon and Levi, knew that the men would be weak at this time, so they went to the city and killed all the men there.
- 4:36SPEAKER_00: Dinah's brothers, Simeon and Levi, killed Himor and his son Shechem.
- 4:43SPEAKER_00: Then they took Dinah out of Shechem's house and left.
- 4:48SPEAKER_00: Jacob's sons went to the city and stole everything that was there because of what Shechem had done to their sister.
- 4:57SPEAKER_00: So the brothers took all of their animals, all their donkeys, and everything else in the city and in the fields.
- 5:05SPEAKER_00: The brothers took everything those people owned.
- 5:09SPEAKER_00: They even took their wives and children.
- 5:13SPEAKER_00: But Jacob said to Simeon and Levi, You have caused me a lot of trouble.
- 5:19SPEAKER_00: All of the people in this place will hate me.
- 5:22SPEAKER_00: All the Canaanites and the Parasites will turn against me.
- 5:27SPEAKER_00: There are only a few of us.
- 5:30SPEAKER_00: If the people in this place gather together to fight against us, I will be destroyed, and all of our prophets will be destroyed with me.
- 5:40SPEAKER_00: But the brothers said, Should we let these people treat our sister like a prostitute?
- 5:47SPEAKER_00: They were wrong to do that to our sister.
