- 0:00You know what it is.
- 0:01That's right.
- 0:02It's time to talk money with your money nerd and financial coach.
- 0:06Now tighten those purse strings and open those ears.
- 0:09It's the Money Talk with Tiff podcast.
- 0:14Welcome back to another episode of Tiffany's Take.
- 0:17I'm your host, Tiffany Grant.
- 0:19Now, if you noticed, I missed my drop last week, look, life was lifeing.
- 0:24It is what it is.
- 0:25We're not going to spend five minutes apologizing or making excuses.
- 0:29We just adjust, we give ourselves grace, and we keep moving forward.
- 0:33So today, we need to have a serious, practical conversation about what happens right around this time every single year.
- 0:40So it's late October.
- 0:42The final stretch of the year is staring at you in the face.
- 0:45And if you're being completely honest with yourself, you might be looking at your bank account, your savings goals from January, or that debt balance that you swore you were going to crush this year.
- 0:55And you're feeling that quiet, creeping knot in your stomach.
- 0:58I know there's a few things that I set out to do this year that I have not done yet.
- 1:02And this is why I'm making this recording right now.
- 1:05So maybe you made good money this year.
- 1:07In fact, on paper, you look successful, but the cash flow feels tight.
- 1:12You're looking ahead at November and December, the travel, the family expectations, open enrollment.
- 1:17I know some of y' all are in open enrollment right now.
- 1:19Cause I asked the question on social media.
- 1:22Um, by the way, I did just release an open enrollment guide.
- 1:26So if you're listening and you didn't get that yet, definitely let me know by contacting me on the website.
- 1:32But anyway, the holidays, and your brain is already trying to offer you an easy way out.
- 1:37Because if you're anything like me, your brain might be saying, you know what?
- 1:41This year was crazy.
- 1:42Let me just get through the holidays, swipe what I need to swipe, and I'll deal with everything fresh in January.
- 1:48But here's the thing, and I need you to hear me clearly.
- 1:51Waiting until January to fix your cash flow is a setup.
- 1:55When you kick the can down the road until January, you don't get a fresh start.
- 1:59You spend the entire first quarter of now, the new year, digging yourself out of a holiday hangover and paying off the stress that you ran away from right now in October.
- 2:09So today, what we're going to do is a year end cash flow triage.
- 2:13We're not overhauling your entire life, so don't turn me off yet.
- 2:18We're just stopping the bleeding right now so you can walk into the new year on solid ground.
- 2:23So the first part of the triage is to stop the unnecessary panic swipes before November hits.
- 2:28So here's what usually happens.
- 2:30People don't overspend because they're reckless.
- 2:32They overspend because they don't set boundaries before the season starts.
- 2:36Then when the family invite comes in, when school events pop up, when the Black Friday emails start flooding your inbox, because you know they are.
- 2:45Every single purchase feels like an isolated decision.
- 2:48You tell yourself it's only $50 here, oh, it's just $100 there.
- 2:52And then by mid December, you've quietly spent two or $3,000 that had no business leaving your account.
- 2:59So here's your move this week.
- 3:00Let's go ahead and build the fence now.
- 3:03So I want you to sit down for 20 minutes and write out every single non negotiable expense coming between now and December 31st.
- 3:11That's your travel plans, that's your holiday meals, that's teacher gifts, kids events, year end family obligations that you already know about.
- 3:21Put a hard realistic dollar cap on that list.
- 3:24And then here's the golden rule of cash flow.
- 3:27If the money isn't sitting in an account right, you do not borrow from your future to pay for December.
- 3:34You don't put holiday piece on a high interest credit card just to perform for people.
- 3:40If your realistic cash limit for gifts this year is $300, guess what?
- 3:44That's your number.
- 3:46Your real peace of mind in January is worth infinitely more than temporary impressions in November.
- 3:53So that's the first thing to do.
- 3:55The second part of your triage is looking at your liquidity.
- 3:59So a lot of personal finance advice tells you that you need three to six months expenses saved immediately.
- 4:05If you have that, wonderful.
- 4:06But if you're a parent, if you're self employed, or if you've had a season with high expenses, hearing someone say save six months of expenses feels so impossible that you end up saving nothing at all.
- 4:19So I want you to forget that six month rule for a minute right now.
- 4:22What is your cortisol buffer?
- 4:25Do you have at least $1,000 to $1,500 sitting completely untouched in a separate account that not mixed in with your checking account where your debit card can swipe it by accident, where they can just swipe it over if
- 4:38you overdraft, you want it completely separate.
- 4:42Why does that small buffer matter so much right now?
- 4:45Because it's not just mathematical, it's a biological buffer.
- 4:49When your checking account balance is hovering near zero, your brain stays in A perpetual fight or flight state.
- 4:56Your cortisol spikes and when you are stressed out, your executive functioning drops.
- 5:01You make worse decisions.
- 5:02It's biological is nothing that you're doing wrong per se.
- 5:07You buy convenience food you can't afford because you're exhausted.
- 5:11You ignore bills because opening them feels physically painful.
- 5:15So having that intentional cash buffer gives your nervous system room to breathe so that you can make decisions like a strategist instead of someone in survival mode.
- 5:25So before you throw an extra dollar at anything else this week, I want you to verify that your emergency buffer is int period.
- 5:34The third step in this triage is looking back at the last 10 months with zero judgment but 100% honesty.
- 5:41And that honesty part is so important.
- 5:45Ask yourself this question.
- 5:46What is the one financial obligation, recurring debt or spending pattern that drains your peace the most this year?
- 5:54Notice I didn't say the biggest expense, I said the one that drained your peace.
- 5:58Those are two different things.
- 6:00For some of you, it's a specific credit card where the minimum payments keep going up and the balance barely moves.
- 6:07For others, it may be a business subscription or overhead cost that kept you paying for just in case I'm doing air quotes, even though you haven't used it since April.
- 6:17For some of you who work for yourselves or have variable income, it's the constant cycle of getting a big check, feeling relieved, and then panicking two weeks later because you didn't set aside money for taxes or regular cash
- 6:29flow pacing.
- 6:31You cannot fix five major problems between now and December.
- 6:35But you can choose one leak and decide I am not dragging this specific stress into next year.
- 6:42So I want you to take that one thing, name it, write it down.
- 6:46And when you name something plainly without wrapping it in shame or guilt, it stops being a monster and it starts being a logistical problem that you can solve.
- 6:56So look, I know that sitting down with your own numbers can feel overwhelming.
- 7:00Especially if you're someone who looks like you've got it all together on the outside.
- 7:05You have the degrees, you have the solid income.
- 7:07You run a business, you take care of your kids.
- 7:09It can be embarrassing to admit that behind closed doors your cash flow feels chaotic.
- 7:15You don't have to figure it out alone, and you definitely don't have to sit in shame about it.
- 7:19So if you know you need an objective, expert set of eyes to sit down with your real balance sheet, audit the leaks and build a sustainable stress free cash flow system before the new year arrives.
- 7:32This is exactly what I do.
- 7:34As an accredited financial counselor, my one on one strategy sessions are completely judgment free.
- 7:39We don't do rigid, unrealistic budgets that make you feel miserable.
- 7:43We build a clear working financial architecture tailored to your real life, your real pay cycles and your family's needs.
- 7:51We look at how your income actually flows in and where it's getting caught, how to protect your peace with automated buffers, and how to eliminate recurring debt traps without sacrificing your baseline living standards.
- 8:04So spots for year end one on one strategy intensives are open right now, but availability on my calendar is limited through November and December because again, life be life in so if you're ready to stop guessing and start
- 8:17running your money with clarity, head on over to moneytalkwithtea.com click on work with Me and you'll find a link to schedule your one on one session directly on my calendar.
- 8:27Now let's get your system solid now so that way you can actually enjoy the holidays and step into next year with complete confidence.
- 8:35Confidence.
- 8:35So I want you to take 20 minutes this week, do the triage, check your commitments, protect your buffer and name the leak.
- 8:43Those are the three things.
- 8:44Let me repeat it one more time.
- 8:45Check your commitments, protect your buffer and name the league.
- 8:50Stewardship starts with what is in your hands today.
- 8:53Until next time, keep managing your money with clarity, purpose and peace and I hope you have a wonderful rest of your week.
- 8:59Bye.
