- Paraguay changes everything! This is The Sports Reset for Tuesday June 30th. World Cup soccer owned Monday, led by Paraguay sending Germany out in the Round of 32 after a 1 to 1 draw and a 4 to 3 penalty shootout. Julio Enciso put Paraguay ahead, Kai Havertz answered, and goalkeeper Orlando Gill turned the night by saving two German attempts before Jose Canale finished it. Germany also had a potential extra-time winner wiped away, so the result everyone will be talking about is both the upset and the exit. Brazil survived Japan 2 to 1 when Gabriel Martinelli scored in the 95th minute, after Casemiro had pulled Brazil level. Morocco also advanced, beating the Netherlands 3 to 2 on penalties after a 1 to 1 draw. In golf, Viktor Hovland won the Travelers Championship at 22 under, holding off Scottie Scheffler by one shot and Collin Morikawa by two. In MLB, the Detroit Tigers beat the New York Yankees 7 to 3, the LA Dodgers handled the Athletics 9 to 4, and the Chicago Cubs edged the San Diego Padres 3 to 2 at Wrigley Field. Looking ahead, the WNBA has the title game of the day: the Las Vegas Aces visit the New York Liberty at Barclays Center for the Commissioner’s Cup Championship, with trophy stakes attached to a matchup between two of the league’s headline teams. In World Cup soccer, the Round of 32 continues Tuesday with Norway against Ivory Coast at AT&T Stadium, Sweden against France at MetLife Stadium, and Ecuador against Mexico at Estadio Banorte; every winner moves forward, and every loser is done. In MLB, the New York Yankees get the Detroit Tigers again, the New York Mets visit the Toronto Blue Jays, the Cincinnati Reds face the Milwaukee Brewers, and the LA Dodgers continue their series against the Athletics. The soccer knockout round remains the story to watch now, with elimination games rolling through the week and the pressure building one match at a time.
