- 0:16Speaker 1: Hello, and welcome everybody to episode one forty seven of
- 0:19Speaker 1: Cards and Categories. I'm my Cool Art Fund Baseball Perspectus,
- 0:23Speaker 1: and I am joined by my very good friend Jeremy
- 0:25Speaker 1: Brewer from Rasball. How are you doing tonight, Buddy.
- 0:28Speaker 2: Doing well? Glad to be here. Would rather be at
- 0:30Speaker 2: the All Star Game, but I think at my tickets
- 0:32Speaker 2: and times, so instead we're gonna do a podcast. But
- 0:35Speaker 2: still happy to be here regardless.
- 0:38Speaker 1: I mean, I don't know if I'm really too sad
- 0:40Speaker 1: to be missing. It looks miserably hot there, Like I
- 0:43Speaker 1: am not a hot and humid guy, so I've been
- 0:45Speaker 1: just it's been a rough couple of weeks around Chicago
- 0:48Speaker 1: and the Midwest, and it looks like that type of
- 0:51Speaker 1: weather is sitting in Philadelphia over the All Star Game
- 0:55Speaker 1: right now. We are recording right during the middle of it.
- 0:58Speaker 1: It is currently the the third inning, I believe, and
- 1:02Speaker 1: so we are looking at a game that is still going.
- 1:05Speaker 1: Actually it's only in the second inning, so bomb of
- 1:07Speaker 1: the second We've got Brandon marsh Up and they're talking
- 1:09Speaker 1: to Justin Verlander about who knows what. I'm sure John
- 1:13Speaker 1: Smoltz is giving one of the most mill toast interviews
- 1:17Speaker 1: we've ever heard, and so it was fun the pageantry
- 1:22Speaker 1: to open the game. But we are on a Tuesday
- 1:25Speaker 1: night because we had some obligations on Wednesday night, So
- 1:27Speaker 1: it is July fourteenth as we're speaking. Keep that in
- 1:30Speaker 1: mind because we're gonna do another PC pick of some
- 1:32Speaker 1: of the All Star festivity standouts from this past weekend
- 1:36Speaker 1: and talk a little bit about like what's happened over
- 1:38Speaker 1: the past weekend. But I mean, it has been a
- 1:41Speaker 1: fun All Star period. I think in Philadelphia you've got
- 1:44Speaker 1: it combined with the America two fifty, so there's declaration
- 1:48Speaker 1: of independence folded into everything. I did want to ask,
- 1:51Speaker 1: did you see in the in the pregames how they
- 1:53Speaker 1: did the scorecard for the All Star Game? Where I
- 1:57Speaker 1: did it came out and signed it as a declaration
- 2:01Speaker 1: of independence? And honestly, the first thing I thought was like,
- 2:05Speaker 1: that would be so cool if that was like a
- 2:07Speaker 1: Tops giveaway, would it not?
- 2:09Speaker 2: That would be a cool Top giveaway. But knowing Tops,
- 2:12Speaker 2: they would like take relics out of it and be
- 2:14Speaker 2: like this was a piece and it would just be
- 2:15Speaker 2: a piece of paper, like there was something like that.
- 2:18Speaker 2: And then I I was I'm like, that was actually
- 2:20Speaker 2: a really cool thing. Like it was a little gimmicky,
- 2:23Speaker 2: I'll put that. But then what struck me was then
- 2:27Speaker 2: they got to the catcher and the picture and like
- 2:30Speaker 2: they couldn't sign it, and so like you've got seven
- 2:33Speaker 2: guys or eight guys in the lineup to have signed
- 2:36Speaker 2: and the picture couldn't sign, which I thought was a
- 2:38Speaker 2: little funny. So maybe they signed it later or whatnot.
- 2:41Speaker 1: They pre signed it because I was looking for that
- 2:44Speaker 1: because Shane Langeleiers was hitting third for the AL I mean,
- 2:48Speaker 1: Drake Baltimore was sitting ninth for the NL, so it
- 2:50Speaker 1: didn't really matter that much, but I was looking because
- 2:53Speaker 1: I was like, wait a second, Junior Cavanara is absolutely
- 2:55Speaker 1: gonna walk up there and write his name in the
- 2:58Speaker 1: third spot and mess this off up. But they had
- 3:01Speaker 1: already pre signed it. I like saw it on my
- 3:03Speaker 1: v and they had filled it in, which whoever did
- 3:06Speaker 1: that within the Tops productor not the Tops the Fox
- 3:09Speaker 1: production team to be able to pull that off and
- 3:12Speaker 1: the foresight to think that through, get that person a raise.
- 3:15Speaker 1: That is some genius work there. That is some great work.
- 3:19Speaker 2: Yeah, it was gimmicky, but it was it was cool.
- 3:22Speaker 1: It was fun.
- 3:22Speaker 2: I also have a love the Philadelphia fans because the
- 3:26Speaker 2: number of guys that were just getting massively booed and
- 3:29Speaker 2: like you and you note like that ballpark is known
- 3:32Speaker 2: for that, and you just see them loving it, like
- 3:35Speaker 2: absolutely loving it, especially any guy from the the NL
- 3:38Speaker 2: East there they're just sitting there like soaking in Sodo Albi's.
- 3:42Speaker 2: Those guys were just loving it because they're like, this
- 3:44Speaker 2: is just everyday life here, and we know they're they're
- 3:49Speaker 2: booing us out of pure appreciation, which was absolutely hilarious.
- 3:53Speaker 1: Yeah, and I mean on top of it too, when
- 3:55Speaker 1: they were doing those lineups. I mean, Jordan Walker, who
- 3:58Speaker 1: won the home run derby, probably got the bulk of
- 4:00Speaker 1: the booze, but I think after that it was the Braves.
- 4:03Speaker 1: The Braves certainly got booze rained down on them pretty good,
- 4:07Speaker 1: as well as the Yankees and Wilson Contras who turned
- 4:10Speaker 1: himself into a little bit of a heal during the
- 4:12Speaker 1: home run derby. But that did stand out in terms
- 4:16Speaker 1: of the lineups to me because it is the second
- 4:18Speaker 1: straight year that we finally have gotten the players back
- 4:20Speaker 1: into their jerseys, which is fantastic. That's what they should
- 4:25Speaker 1: have been doing all along for the All Star Game.
- 4:26Speaker 1: I know it sells fewer pieces of products, but I
- 4:29Speaker 1: think it just looks better. And on top of it,
- 4:32Speaker 1: it's very nostalgic for me because, like, especially if you
- 4:35Speaker 1: grew up back in the day and you know, maybe
- 4:38Speaker 1: you didn't always have cable or you were around before
- 4:40Speaker 1: cable existed, the All Star Game was probably we were
- 4:43Speaker 1: one chance to see all of the best players at
- 4:46Speaker 1: once because you didn't have MLB dot tv available to you.
- 4:50Speaker 1: You didn't even have usually like a game of the
- 4:52Speaker 1: week that was too often available, and so you would
- 4:55Speaker 1: catch up on players through this week in baseball and
- 4:57Speaker 1: the All Star Game and also Baseball car and so
- 5:00Speaker 1: it was like the one opportunity to actually like put
- 5:03Speaker 1: the player to the jersey and kind of round it
- 5:06Speaker 1: all out for you. So I think that's a big win.
- 5:09Speaker 1: As they continue back with the All Star Game and
- 5:11Speaker 1: as you just continue watching it, keeping them in their
- 5:14Speaker 1: kind of classic road and home uniforms to be able
- 5:17Speaker 1: to emphasize the actual identity of each team is just
- 5:22Speaker 1: I think that's really big for the brand recognition for MLB,
- 5:24Speaker 1: and I hope they never stray back away from that.
- 5:28Speaker 2: I hope they don't stray away from it. I think
- 5:29Speaker 2: it's it's absolutely the right thing to do, and it
- 5:32Speaker 2: makes you you feel like it's an actual All Star
- 5:34Speaker 2: game versus a big kind of gimmick to degree, But
- 5:37Speaker 2: don't worry, the gimmick are still here because Dave Roberts
- 5:39Speaker 2: just putting a reliever in the third inning. So we
- 5:45Speaker 2: will have plenty of off the cuff comments, I think
- 5:47Speaker 2: during during this podcast, because we just can't believe that
- 5:50Speaker 2: Dave Roberts brought Riley O'Brien in and in the top
- 5:54Speaker 2: of the third to face the top top of the
- 5:57Speaker 2: als lineup.
- 5:58Speaker 1: Here, So yeah, and looks like he might have just
- 6:00Speaker 1: broken Junior Kiman Narrow's hand, So that's a big bummer.
- 6:04Speaker 1: Well since so, I mean, we will be doing a
- 6:07Speaker 1: PC picks of some of the All Star Festivity people
- 6:10Speaker 1: that were that I was mentioning. So let's start with
- 6:14Speaker 1: the home run derby, which I think was a bigger
- 6:17Speaker 1: win than I was anticipating. One of my first posts
- 6:21Speaker 1: from one was kicking off yesterday on Blue Sky was
- 6:24Speaker 1: just commenting on how long it was going to take,
- 6:26Speaker 1: which it does feel like they somebody said to pick
- 6:30Speaker 1: up the Pace or something at some point, because certainly,
- 6:33Speaker 1: if we had kept at the Pace after Wilson Contras's
- 6:36Speaker 1: first twenty swings, we would have been there all night
- 6:40Speaker 1: watching the derby in kind of an old school fashion.
- 6:42Speaker 1: But thankfully the no pitch clock kind of limit allowed
- 6:48Speaker 1: us to be able to breathe and see the Homers,
- 6:50Speaker 1: and maybe we have seen more of them if a
- 6:54Speaker 1: real kind of network was covering the home run derby,
- 6:58Speaker 1: because Netflix did not quite have the cuts down even
- 7:00Speaker 1: when everything was slowed down, partly just because they were
- 7:04Speaker 1: just doing like really asked the nine cuts to like
- 7:07Speaker 1: celebrities and people standing on the sidelines when it's like
- 7:10Speaker 1: that's you can do that when people are in between
- 7:14Speaker 1: hitters or whatever. But I think it was a great
- 7:17Speaker 1: home run derby. In terms of atmosphere, it stood out.
- 7:20Speaker 1: Certainly the Philadelphia crowd helped, as you said, booed tons
- 7:24Speaker 1: of people. It was kind of like a wrestling atmosphere.
- 7:26Speaker 1: In terms of the booing was good natured booing children,
- 7:30Speaker 1: lots of booing of children when they should have been
- 7:33Speaker 1: catching fly balls. So I definitely support that. And it
- 7:36Speaker 1: was a rowdy, raucous crowd. Jordan Walker coming from from
- 7:40Speaker 1: behind in the final round, catching Kyle Schwarber hitting four
- 7:44Speaker 1: straight taters on that last weird ball where you know
- 7:50Speaker 1: they were joking about it during the broadcast that like
- 7:52Speaker 1: nobody had hit it out until the final round, but
- 7:55Speaker 1: you know that nobody hit it out because you've probably
- 7:58Speaker 1: remember this from just playing ball back in the day, Like, yeah,
- 8:00Speaker 1: anytime you got those like balls that had the weird
- 8:03Speaker 1: color of leather and stuff, they just were not right
- 8:06Speaker 1: and you could tell even when they're being pitched they
- 8:09Speaker 1: would slip out of the hand sometimes. So, uh yeah,
- 8:12Speaker 1: standout performance from Jordan Walker. What stood out to you
- 8:16Speaker 1: the most watching him come back and clinch that home
- 8:19Speaker 1: run derby.
- 8:20Speaker 2: I mean the for me, the maturity of Jordan Walker
- 8:24Speaker 2: throughout that like he of anybody, looked like the most
- 8:28Speaker 2: relaxed guy at the plate, and he absolutely knew he
- 8:31Speaker 2: was doing He stood a little taller than he usually does,
- 8:34Speaker 2: if you didn't hear that mentioned like seventeen times during
- 8:37Speaker 2: the derby, but he absolutely just let his raw strength
- 8:42Speaker 2: and bass feed eat and didn't overdo it like you
- 8:45Speaker 2: could see other guys absolutely swinging their hardest trying to
- 8:50Speaker 2: just drive the ball out and all Walker was doing
- 8:53Speaker 2: is just trying to barrel it and he wasn't trying
- 8:54Speaker 2: to hit the furthest home runs like Wilson Contrere's Jack
- 8:58Speaker 2: Kagleiotron Like was unbelievable to watch because that guy was launching.
- 9:02Speaker 2: I don't think stat Castle was right on him, uh,
- 9:04Speaker 2: because he was putting on a show when he made contact.
- 9:09Speaker 2: But h Walker was just so mature and it just
- 9:12Speaker 2: felt like he was he was there and was gonna
- 9:16Speaker 2: easily just plow through this thing, like you forget he
- 9:19Speaker 2: he didn't use all his pitches in the second round,
- 9:21Speaker 2: even used like half of them, and so he he
- 9:25Speaker 2: easily progressed through And it was the weird thing, like
- 9:29Speaker 2: you just felt like he was going to figure it
- 9:30Speaker 2: out even when he was behind. But like the crowd
- 9:33Speaker 2: being against him, how relaxed he was. Was he the
- 9:37Speaker 2: only player who they showed showed his parents the entire
- 9:40Speaker 2: time on the broadcast, Like it just felt like some
- 9:43Speaker 2: some script had been written, uh, and it was just
- 9:46Speaker 2: it was so fun to watch.
- 9:48Speaker 1: Uh.
- 9:48Speaker 2: Feels bad for Kyle Schwarber because he absolutely deserved a
- 9:53Speaker 2: win here, but you know, I'm I'm not gonna root
- 9:56Speaker 2: against my my my hometown Cardinals.
- 9:58Speaker 1: So yeah, well maybe it was scripted because there was
- 10:01Speaker 1: that one frame from Netflix that showed Jordan Walker as
- 10:04Speaker 1: the winner after I think the second round when he
- 10:07Speaker 1: won his second round matchup where they had screwed up
- 10:09Speaker 1: the graphic that went with it. But yeah, I mean
- 10:14Speaker 1: they had to show us family. I mean, his family
- 10:16Speaker 1: was just like very very cute, like all cheering for him,
- 10:20Speaker 1: and it's just a really great, feel good story. He also,
- 10:25Speaker 1: after winning, you know, talked about wanting to try to
- 10:29Speaker 1: be a role model for just younger players out there
- 10:32Speaker 1: and just it's kind of strange having a Cardinals player
- 10:36Speaker 1: like Jordan Walker that actually might have some personality and
- 10:39Speaker 1: like be not a robot. And so it's really I mean,
- 10:44Speaker 1: it was a perfect kind of show for him to
- 10:46Speaker 1: be able to cap off that first half. And honestly,
- 10:48Speaker 1: I think it is the star turn for Jordan Walker.
- 10:50Speaker 1: So he is going to be covered in our PC discussions.
- 10:54Speaker 1: I mean even before we were doing that, we were
- 10:57Speaker 1: talking and I was searching for some cards and I
- 11:00Speaker 1: snatched one up and so I think that the Jordan
- 11:03Speaker 1: Walker bump is coming. So just kind of keep that
- 11:05Speaker 1: in mind if you've been trying to mosey along and
- 11:09Speaker 1: ride out some of maybe the cheaper prices, but especially
- 11:13Speaker 1: he's so young, like there's so much that could still
- 11:16Speaker 1: be in front of him that it's kind of the
- 11:18Speaker 1: same thing in fantasy. From a dynasty perspective too, that
- 11:21Speaker 1: like at BP think he shot up to like top fifty,
- 11:25Speaker 1: and honestly I would have pushed him even higher if
- 11:28Speaker 1: it was my rankings, I probably would put Jordan Walker
- 11:32Speaker 1: like top thirty or top twenty five in terms of
- 11:34Speaker 1: dynasty like assets. Right now, it's just everything is there,
- 11:39Speaker 1: and especially I think when he was in the pressure
- 11:42Speaker 1: situation with Philadelphia with the home run Derby, that showed
- 11:45Speaker 1: you kind of I think that's exactly what we've been
- 11:48Speaker 1: looking for in Jordan Walker, of just that level of
- 11:51Speaker 1: confidence to let his tools and just let that giant
- 11:56Speaker 1: frame do what it needs to do. And he's a
- 11:59Speaker 1: great ballplayer.
- 12:01Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean I wrote last week when I said
- 12:04Speaker 2: last week, like three days ago, starting to do kind
- 12:09Speaker 2: of around the All Star break here, let's do a
- 12:11Speaker 2: kind of top ten hitters for twenty twenty seven, but
- 12:14Speaker 2: started with like twenty I was a twenty or twenty one.
- 12:17Speaker 2: I can't remember what I actually started with hitters and
- 12:19Speaker 2: just kind of like, here's the field that we should
- 12:21Speaker 2: even consider. You got the stalwarts, the Otani's and the judges,
- 12:24Speaker 2: the Zier mirrors is those kind of guys. You got
- 12:27Speaker 2: the guys with a ton of skills, but something is
- 12:29Speaker 2: like maybe not quite always there. That's the shore wers
- 12:32Speaker 2: that don't have the speed. Things like that Kertz where
- 12:35Speaker 2: he's been, have a few injuries, stuff like that, And
- 12:37Speaker 2: then Jordan Walker made it into the list. Like the
- 12:40Speaker 2: more I looked at things, Jordan Walker is in that discussion,
- 12:43Speaker 2: like he's legitimately in the top ten, which would be
- 12:46Speaker 2: a first round for twenty twenty seven discussion for hitters,
- 12:49Speaker 2: and that's just crazy to think about with where he
- 12:52Speaker 2: was a year ago. And there's you know, there are
- 12:56Speaker 2: probably some red flags with the plate approach, like he
- 12:59Speaker 2: just hits the ball incredibly hard, doesn't take the walk,
- 13:02Speaker 2: strikes out a little much like I wish there was
- 13:04Speaker 2: a little bit more maturity there because that profile can
- 13:08Speaker 2: be a little dangerous over time, but it can also work.
- 13:11Speaker 2: It can absolutely work. So again, it was a great
- 13:15Speaker 2: home rn Derby so excited to see him win, and
- 13:20Speaker 2: it'll be interesting to see I'm hoping he gets a
- 13:23Speaker 2: good a bat here in the All Star Game. I'm
- 13:25Speaker 2: sure he's going to have a very well more welcome
- 13:28Speaker 2: when he gets up to the plate, and I just
- 13:29Speaker 2: hope he deposits ones of the seas just to make
- 13:31Speaker 2: a point.
- 13:32Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, me too, that would be really fun. Also,
- 13:35Speaker 1: we also had the MLB Futures Game this past weekend,
- 13:38Speaker 1: which I mean they continue to do just like absolutely
- 13:41Speaker 1: bury this thing where it's played still on like the
- 13:46Speaker 1: Sunday where everybody is playing an MLB and it just
- 13:50Speaker 1: kind of happens very unceremoniously, like it's really kind of
- 13:53Speaker 1: hard to find and watch, and it's really a bummer
- 13:58Speaker 1: because we're about to go through I guess there is
- 14:01Speaker 1: a game on Thursday, a game or tour on Thursday,
- 14:03Speaker 1: and so we just have one day without baseball coming up.
- 14:07Speaker 1: But they could totally park this thing on the Wednesday
- 14:13Speaker 1: to be able to give us some MLB action and
- 14:17Speaker 1: just be able to highlight these players in the Futures Game.
- 14:20Speaker 1: But it was won by the al side, I believe,
- 14:25Speaker 1: which I'm just looking. I don't even think I have
- 14:28Speaker 1: the box score in front of me. I just have
- 14:29Speaker 1: like an article about it, so I actually don't know.
- 14:32Speaker 1: I do know that the standouts were Nate Flelling and
- 14:36Speaker 1: Seth Hernandez, we're gonna be able to practice our pronunciation
- 14:41Speaker 1: of flelling or flu ling or I don't even know
- 14:43Speaker 1: actually what I'm going with. I've never heard it pronounced
- 14:46Speaker 1: in myself. I've only read it on actual kind of articles.
- 14:51Speaker 1: So maybe you can help me out there too while
- 14:53Speaker 1: you look up and see how we pronounced Nate Flelling fllling.
- 14:58Speaker 1: But he is certainly stand out there for the Tampa
- 15:01Speaker 1: Bay Rays, the catcher. We'll get into some PC picks
- 15:04Speaker 1: for him. But what if any thoughts or takeaways from
- 15:08Speaker 1: this breakout futures game where I mean, you've got all
- 15:11Speaker 1: the top prospects and you get them in front of
- 15:15Speaker 1: the cameras that we want from savant which is also
- 15:18Speaker 1: a little bit less consequential than it used to be
- 15:21Speaker 1: because you can get that data in other places. But
- 15:25Speaker 1: is it something that you would love to see kind
- 15:27Speaker 1: of featured more? Yeah, I mean I would like to
- 15:31Speaker 1: see it featured more. Like I didn't get a chance
- 15:33Speaker 1: to watch it again. A lot of other things going on, real,
- 15:36Speaker 1: real major league baseball taking place, But you look at
- 15:40Speaker 1: all the players that played and made an impact here.
- 15:44Speaker 1: You had guys like Kid Anderson, Leo da Frees, Seth Hernandez,
- 15:49Speaker 1: you had Edward Florentino, Liam Doyle. I mean, you just
- 15:54Speaker 1: had all of the big guys, and you had some
- 15:56Speaker 1: up and coming guys that kind of were making a
- 15:57Speaker 1: name like Theo Gillen, who is the guy we talked about,
- 16:00Speaker 1: Jojo Parker. All those guys making an impact. And I
- 16:04Speaker 1: think there, you know, there's a the really nice young
- 16:08Speaker 1: crop of pictures coming through, maybe not for this year,
- 16:10Speaker 1: but for next year that are gonna be really excited
- 16:12Speaker 1: Kate Anderson. I will give them this year for sure.
- 16:15Speaker 1: And so I would love to see this game in
- 16:19Speaker 1: prime time, even if it was like the day before
- 16:22Speaker 1: the home run derby, and I get from a logistics
- 16:23Speaker 1: perspective that's probably not reasonable to have happened, but you
- 16:27Speaker 1: can probably figure out a way to get a celebrity
- 16:29Speaker 1: softball game in there somewhere, And so I think this
- 16:33Speaker 1: would be great for folks to see actually get a
- 16:35Speaker 1: chance to watch it. But I was even looking at
- 16:36Speaker 1: some pictures from the game and like there's seats in
- 16:40Speaker 1: like the first five rows that are empty like it's
- 16:43Speaker 1: just people can't make it to this game. It's not
- 16:46Speaker 1: getting the love that absolutely should. And you could see
- 16:49Speaker 1: some of the absolute best prospects really in all of baseball,
- 16:54Speaker 1: all at one place, at one point in time. So
- 16:57Speaker 1: I would love to see it more. I'd love to
- 16:59Speaker 1: see it to your point, maybe the day after the
- 17:01Speaker 1: All Star Game, because like it's the future, right, watch
- 17:04Speaker 1: the All Star Game, watch the future after it, and
- 17:06Speaker 1: then and then move on. But you know that's why
- 17:09Speaker 1: we don't run the league. We just read the news
- 17:11Speaker 1: stories after because we can't watch it in real time
- 17:13Speaker 1: because they put it in an illogical time for for
- 17:16Speaker 1: everybody else. Because again, i'd love to see him under
- 17:19Speaker 1: the lights, right, put them on a night game. I mean,
- 17:22Speaker 1: I don't know exactly the same, but I think it
- 17:23Speaker 1: was like a noon game. This is just like where
- 17:26Speaker 1: we really are we really doing this? Al did win
- 17:28Speaker 1: six to one if you didn't have a chance to
- 17:30Speaker 1: look it up, And I think it's flu lling, So
- 17:35Speaker 1: that sounds right now. I feel like I've heard it somewhere.
- 17:39Speaker 2: So the fun mart is, did you see who the
- 17:43Speaker 2: skippers were for the Future's game?
- 17:45Speaker 1: The manager?
- 17:46Speaker 2: So the American League had Larry Boa as their skipper,
- 17:50Speaker 2: not to be outdone by nationally with Shane Victorino. So
- 17:54Speaker 2: we had some some really classic Philly Philly history here managing.
- 17:59Speaker 1: These seems yes, and I mean they might have been
- 18:02Speaker 1: even left over from that celebrity softball game. So that's
- 18:05Speaker 1: like I got two for one pickup. Okay, we also
- 18:10Speaker 1: had the twenty twenty six MLB Draft, so I mean
- 18:13Speaker 1: they just kind of cram it all into everything, and
- 18:17Speaker 1: I mean from all the reporting podcasts that I listened to,
- 18:21Speaker 1: I'm sure that front offices absolutely love it. Like actually,
- 18:25Speaker 1: and that's been sarcastic that it's just so much going
- 18:28Speaker 1: on in terms of this weekend, and then on top
- 18:30Speaker 1: of it all, you've got to go and do the draft.
- 18:33Speaker 1: So the first overall pick was the Chicago White Sox.
- 18:36Speaker 1: Who it. I Mean, it seems from what I've read
- 18:40Speaker 1: that people are real into the Chicago White Sox draft.
- 18:43Speaker 1: They picked up a lot of talent, and they were
- 18:45Speaker 1: able to spread it out pretty well, especially because I mean,
- 18:47Speaker 1: we'll talk about it a little bit, but they did
- 18:50Speaker 1: trade Jacob Gonzalez to the Pirates to pick up the
- 18:53Speaker 1: thirty fourth pick and get a little bit of extra
- 18:54Speaker 1: cap room allowed them to shuffle some things around, but
- 18:57Speaker 1: they took Rock Chilowski first. We're allop from UCLA. Who
- 19:02Speaker 1: was I mean, there was some chatter that he might
- 19:05Speaker 1: slip down to the number two pick, but I think
- 19:07Speaker 1: when you kind of lined everything up in terms of
- 19:10Speaker 1: what you look for in a number one pick and
- 19:12Speaker 1: the combination of floor and ceiling, Chilawski kind of checked
- 19:17Speaker 1: all those boxes, especially for a White Sox team that
- 19:20Speaker 1: the window is starting to open pretty quickly in terms
- 19:22Speaker 1: of their competitiveness. I mean, they were talking about it
- 19:25Speaker 1: before the All Star Game. They're showing like if the
- 19:28Speaker 1: playoffs started today and the standing stuck guess who would
- 19:32Speaker 1: have a bye is the number two steed in the
- 19:35Speaker 1: a A the Chicago White Sox, and so Chilawski does
- 19:39Speaker 1: settle there. Overall, I think it's maybe a more muted
- 19:43Speaker 1: draft class compared to especially the past couple of years.
- 19:46Speaker 1: We've been pretty spoiled. So lots of lots of arms
- 19:51Speaker 1: from the high school ranks that got drafted, but lots
- 19:54Speaker 1: of solid college arms were I'm going to be really
- 19:59Speaker 1: just fascinating to watch some of them developed in some
- 20:02Speaker 1: of these big league systems and then, I mean it
- 20:05Speaker 1: did seem a little bit light on, kind of like
- 20:07Speaker 1: light tower power corner guys, and what you had going
- 20:10Speaker 1: in the first round was a lot of bat forward,
- 20:14Speaker 1: uh outfielders and middle infielders going so and back ford,
- 20:18Speaker 1: I mean like contact forward. So yeah, what's your take
- 20:21Speaker 1: on on the draft? What's your take on Rock Scholowski?
- 20:24Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean, uh, you pretty well there. I think
- 20:27Speaker 2: Scholowski is by far the head and shoulders above the
- 20:30Speaker 2: rest of this draft class. I don't think there's any question.
- 20:32Speaker 1: Uh.
- 20:32Speaker 2: He is a guy that I legitimately think they could
- 20:35Speaker 2: just plug in on the major league roster and he
- 20:37Speaker 2: would do decent. Is he gonna you know, blow the
- 20:41Speaker 2: you know, the blow the world away here. No, he's
- 20:43Speaker 2: not gonna catch on fire immediately. But he's a very
- 20:46Speaker 2: mature hitter, and I think there's a the future is
- 20:50Speaker 2: extremely bright for him. He's absolutely the top prospect for
- 20:53Speaker 2: the White Sox immediately the second they did sign him
- 20:56Speaker 2: a little underslot and again I think a lot of
- 20:58Speaker 2: the are we going to take him, are we gonna
- 21:00Speaker 2: take Grady Emerson? Are we gonna do something different? It
- 21:02Speaker 2: was all for show. It was all negotiation. There was
- 21:05Speaker 2: zero question there should have been who who the White
- 21:07Speaker 2: Sox were gonna take from an upside perspective, Jackson Flora
- 21:11Speaker 2: that went to the giants from UC Santa Barbara. Uh,
- 21:15Speaker 2: he's you know, by and far the best picture Uh
- 21:18Speaker 2: in the draft. Uh, there's a lot of talent, but
- 21:20Speaker 2: like as far as uh kind of you're looking for
- 21:23Speaker 2: a frontline type of guy, he's probably the only guy
- 21:25Speaker 2: that really Isn't that that conversation Again, these guys could
- 21:29Speaker 2: change tomorrow, things will, things will shift, but like you know,
- 21:31Speaker 2: he he was kind of head and shoulders above and
- 21:34Speaker 2: then to your point, from there, it was it was
- 21:37Speaker 2: like the athlete draft, Like it was toolsy guys with projectability.
- 21:41Speaker 2: Uh that that really went out there. But White Sox
- 21:44Speaker 2: did a fantastic job. Pirates did did pretty well for themselves,
- 21:48Speaker 2: had a number of high ceiling kind of kind of
- 21:50Speaker 2: guys raised always do well, Forers do well. Cardinals did
- 21:54Speaker 2: pretty well. From a value perspective. I think the Cubs
- 21:57Speaker 2: the kind of reached on Kate Towns and uh they're
- 22:01Speaker 2: they're like still grappling with trying to get college pitching
- 22:04Speaker 2: that somehow will like come solve the woes today. So
- 22:08Speaker 2: that was definitely a concern. There were also a number
- 22:11Speaker 2: of teams I think that played a little too much
- 22:12Speaker 2: of the bonus game where they're trying to like drop
- 22:15Speaker 2: down and then catch guys later. So I think that
- 22:18Speaker 2: that was definitely a challenge as well from a fantasy perspective.
- 22:21Speaker 2: I mean, the list is probably pretty short. Is like, hey,
- 22:24Speaker 2: guys that you want to at this point, like first
- 22:26Speaker 2: year player drafts at Schlowski's Emerson Slackey, it's flora like
- 22:30Speaker 2: it's the first four picks of the draft, and then
- 22:33Speaker 2: there's then it gets kind of helter skelter from there
- 22:36Speaker 2: as far as like Booth Kriel's a high upside but
- 22:41Speaker 2: high risk Burris. A number of those guys have a
- 22:44Speaker 2: ton of potential. But I mean those guys, I think
- 22:48Speaker 2: there's a lot of guys you want to Let's let's
- 22:51Speaker 2: see what happened in the minor leagues when they get
- 22:54Speaker 2: some of bats. So really fun draft, really liked it
- 22:58Speaker 2: kind of washing and following along. But this is not
- 23:01Speaker 2: the highest upside overall draft, and so I would say
- 23:05Speaker 2: the guys that you're seeing in the teens here typically
- 23:08Speaker 2: are like at the end of the first round for
- 23:10Speaker 2: a loaded draft, So just keep that in mind.
- 23:14Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, I think that is something to really kind
- 23:17Speaker 1: of map out. I mean, I think there is going
- 23:18Speaker 1: to be a lot of talent that comes out of
- 23:20Speaker 1: this draft, but some of it is so far away
- 23:23Speaker 1: in terms of these high school bats, and some of
- 23:27Speaker 1: the high school arms might move quickly. But I mean
- 23:29Speaker 1: that's just a really tough proposition and tough tree.
- 23:33Speaker 2: To be barking up.
- 23:34Speaker 1: I wouldn't be also surprised if you know somebody like
- 23:37Speaker 1: a Lebron, which is kind of fun. I like just
- 23:42Speaker 1: saying that the Lebron, justin Lebron shortstop from Alabama who
- 23:45Speaker 1: got picked by the Reds at number eighteen. I mean
- 23:48Speaker 1: I think he might be up towards the top of
- 23:51Speaker 1: first year player draft talk, just in terms of the
- 23:56Speaker 1: athletic skill and then the landing spot. I mean, he
- 23:59Speaker 1: can't land in too many places that are better than
- 24:02Speaker 1: Cincinnati as a bat. I also want to shout out
- 24:05Speaker 1: the Guardians draft too, because especially them getting Liam Peterson
- 24:11Speaker 1: from Florida in the first round down pick nineteen. I mean,
- 24:14Speaker 1: I think that's a great fit, great organization, and then
- 24:18Speaker 1: they took a bunch of other arms too, where I
- 24:22Speaker 1: like all of those arms that they took that you
- 24:24Speaker 1: put them, especially in Cleveland. They know what they're doing,
- 24:27Speaker 1: and I think a lot of them could be pretty
- 24:29Speaker 1: quick movers, especially on the college side. But don't overlook
- 24:33Speaker 1: especially the one they took their fifty ninth Overroll Logan Schmidt,
- 24:37Speaker 1: that it sounds like he's a big dude and he's
- 24:40Speaker 1: gonna really do some things. But yeah, I think it
- 24:43Speaker 1: is going to be a draft where when we actually
- 24:45Speaker 1: talk about it, maybe again this time next year, it
- 24:48Speaker 1: might pop in terms of like a great picture draft,
- 24:51Speaker 1: because I think the scouts were a little bit light
- 24:56Speaker 1: on some of these college arms that I really liked
- 24:58Speaker 1: as they were coming through in terms of like even
- 25:01Speaker 1: Flora at number four, I think is not necessarily getting
- 25:03Speaker 1: his his full due in terms of what he could
- 25:06Speaker 1: do with the Giants. And you know, I just mentioned Peterson,
- 25:09Speaker 1: but you also had at the same time Hunter Deets,
- 25:13Speaker 1: you know, going to the Yankees and some other just
- 25:17Speaker 1: great arms. In terms of Kate Townsend with the Cubs
- 25:20Speaker 1: is a great fit as well. Giovanni Rojas. Giovanni Rojas,
- 25:25Speaker 1: he is a high school arm, but I kind of
- 25:27Speaker 1: wish he didn't land in Texas. We've been down on
- 25:29Speaker 1: their pitching development, but there's gonna be a lot of
- 25:32Speaker 1: really cool arms in Cameron Fluki in Detroit. That was
- 25:36Speaker 1: the other name I was trying to remember and look
- 25:38Speaker 1: for it. That's another one I like a lot. So
- 25:41Speaker 1: there's gonna be lots of arms to come through. And
- 25:44Speaker 1: I think if you're in a situation in a Dynasty
- 25:47Speaker 1: first year player draft, that it might not be a
- 25:49Speaker 1: bad idea just to like stock up on some fast
- 25:52Speaker 1: track arms out of this group.
- 25:56Speaker 2: Yeah, I don't think you're wrong there. And I think
- 25:57Speaker 2: there's also just a few fun fun ones with this draft.
- 26:00Speaker 2: Call out land in tom Jim Tomay's son that went
- 26:03Speaker 2: to the White Sox in the second round. You also
- 26:05Speaker 2: had Rentaro Sasaki, who's like the home run hero from
- 26:09Speaker 2: Japan in the high school and they came over to
- 26:11Speaker 2: Stanford and his carrying tools just he's a really big,
- 26:14Speaker 2: big power guy that went and I think the day two.
- 26:19Speaker 2: So there's definitely some fun things here. But this, yeah,
- 26:24Speaker 2: this is one that like you can do well in volume,
- 26:27Speaker 2: but there's a lot of a lot of question marks
- 26:29Speaker 2: for me.
- 26:30Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, I think I agree. Okay, Well, I think
- 26:33Speaker 1: we're gonna wrap up maybe the first half here. Check
- 26:35Speaker 1: out that Baseball card release calendar. We will be covering
- 26:38Speaker 1: tops Chrome next week because it will be releasing on
- 26:42Speaker 1: the twenty second. It's gonna be quite the event. I
- 26:46Speaker 1: think that you're gonna see lots of social media buzz
- 26:49Speaker 1: post All Star Game. In terms of tops Chrome. It
- 26:51Speaker 1: is also Fanatics Fest this weekend in New York, which
- 26:55Speaker 1: is kind of coinciding with the FIFA World Cup final,
- 26:58Speaker 1: so that's gonna get bananas as well too. I think
- 27:00Speaker 1: you're gonna see a lot of especially if you're kind
- 27:03Speaker 1: of into the hobby from Instagram or Reddit or TikTok
- 27:08Speaker 1: kind of perspective from the socials, It's going to be
- 27:10Speaker 1: a very bright and flashy weekend for trading cards all
- 27:14Speaker 1: across the spectrum because you're gonna get a lot a
- 27:17Speaker 1: lot of celebrities and kind of really big things happening
- 27:21Speaker 1: as things are flowing through fanags Fest and the FEFUL
- 27:23Speaker 1: World Cup in New York this weekend, so it should
- 27:26Speaker 1: be fun to see kind of what the fallout is
- 27:28Speaker 1: there as well as Like I have to imagine the
- 27:30Speaker 1: rippings and Pops Chrome early, so I don't think they're
- 27:33Speaker 1: going to be pulling anything too crazy, but I think
- 27:35Speaker 1: you're gonna get a good feel of kind of. I'm
- 27:40Speaker 1: hoping there's some live streams of it, because it's gonna
- 27:42Speaker 1: be a sparse product I think in terms of the hits,
- 27:45Speaker 1: and maybe they'll send some sueded boxes to the fanatics
- 27:49Speaker 1: affiliates this weekend, but we'll see. So with that, we're
- 27:54Speaker 1: going to take a break. We'll be back to talk
- 27:56Speaker 1: about those All Star Facivity PC picks for the handful
- 28:00Speaker 1: of players. All right, welcome back everybody. We are going
- 28:20Speaker 1: to get into our main topic, which is PC picks
- 28:23Speaker 1: from All Star Festivity standouts. So we're going to cover
- 28:27Speaker 1: the two finalists from the home Run derby and then
- 28:29Speaker 1: the two standouts from the Futures game. So this will
- 28:33Speaker 1: be also another chance for me to practice. It's Nathan
- 28:37Speaker 1: flu Ling. So there we go. We got it locked
- 28:39Speaker 1: in nice and smooth.
- 28:41Speaker 2: This is I'm just ask you every time I go
- 28:43Speaker 2: there to say, Nathan, can you just finish the sentence
- 28:45Speaker 2: for me?
- 28:47Speaker 1: It's like, yeah, if you were around during our some
- 28:50Speaker 1: of our spring early season pods, there was one that
- 28:53Speaker 1: I had to practice just Stinston many many times to
- 28:57Speaker 1: get that down, but we're gonna do the home run
- 28:59Speaker 1: Derby standouts first. We're gonna do Jordan Walker and Kyle Schwarber,
- 29:03Speaker 1: partly because I mean, Kyle Schuber's actually never been a
- 29:06Speaker 1: PC pick for us. So if you do go into
- 29:08Speaker 1: the show notes, you can find a link to the
- 29:11Speaker 1: entire pod PC. So we just covered this last week
- 29:14Speaker 1: with the June Players of the Month PC, and then
- 29:16Speaker 1: we do other PC picks for just random reasons as
- 29:20Speaker 1: well as like standouts for situations like this or Hall
- 29:24Speaker 1: of Fame inductions, and we'll do an awards one at
- 29:26Speaker 1: the end of the season if you're not familiar with it.
- 29:29Speaker 1: The PC is the personal collection of this pod, so
- 29:31Speaker 1: it's just kind of a fun, little running list of
- 29:33Speaker 1: our favorite cards of these players. You can also go
- 29:36Speaker 1: into those show notes and there will be a link
- 29:38Speaker 1: to rasball dot com where there was a corresponding post
- 29:41Speaker 1: for this podcast, and you can see pictures of these cards,
- 29:44Speaker 1: so I'll have it within that post. That way you
- 29:46Speaker 1: won't have to just listen to us describe the cards.
- 29:48Speaker 1: You can actually get a sense of what it looks like.
- 29:51Speaker 1: And the eBay links if you're still listening to this
- 29:54Speaker 1: within time of when we've recorded it, the links could
- 29:58Speaker 1: still be active and you might actually be able per
- 30:00Speaker 1: these cards directly yourself. So let's start with Jordan Walker.
- 30:03Speaker 1: We talked about him a little bit before the break
- 30:05Speaker 1: in terms of just the star turn honestly at this
- 30:08Speaker 1: home run derby that I think everybody ate it up
- 30:11Speaker 1: in terms of his family being there, the backwards hat,
- 30:15Speaker 1: Al lah Ken, Griffey Junior, the smooth approach at the plate,
- 30:19Speaker 1: just the extra bubbliness that I think he also had
- 30:22Speaker 1: when he was in interviews that you can tell that
- 30:24Speaker 1: he's not some like media trained robot like Derek Cheeter.
- 30:29Speaker 2: And and.
- 30:32Speaker 1: He just really put on a great show where I
- 30:34Speaker 1: think even the fans in Philadelphia, where they booed him
- 30:37Speaker 1: in the lineups during the All Star Game tonight, it
- 30:39Speaker 1: was almost like a half hearted boo because I mean,
- 30:42Speaker 1: how could you not be one over by Jordan Walker's
- 30:45Speaker 1: grand smile. Now, he has been up and down player,
- 30:48Speaker 1: I think in the hobby, just like he has been
- 30:50Speaker 1: in fantasy and in real life as well. So because
- 30:54Speaker 1: of that, he's got a lot of cards. They were
- 30:56Speaker 1: certainly very hot at one point back in his day seasons,
- 31:01Speaker 1: and then they bottomed out, and I think we're starting
- 31:03Speaker 1: to see where they're gonna start ticking back up. I mean,
- 31:05Speaker 1: the first half that he put up is certainly part
- 31:09Speaker 1: of that where he has turned into an All Star
- 31:12Speaker 1: Masher deserve to be there. Twenty two homers, thirteen Stone
- 31:15Speaker 1: Bases two ninety four, three point fifty four, five thirty
- 31:18Speaker 1: two slash Line one forty three WRC plus before the
- 31:22Speaker 1: All Star Game, and this home run derby I think
- 31:25Speaker 1: is just exactly what he needed to really get going.
- 31:28Speaker 1: So first time for Jordan Walker to be in the
- 31:30Speaker 1: podcast PC brew Where are you going?
- 31:33Speaker 2: Yeah, Jordan Walker's market is incredibly hot right now. I
- 31:37Speaker 2: don't know that it will ever get much hotter than
- 31:38Speaker 2: it is right now, So just keep that in mind
- 31:40Speaker 2: if you're buying, if you're looking to sell. Also a
- 31:43Speaker 2: really good time. But I'm going with one of my
- 31:47Speaker 2: just all time modern favorite cards, which is not something
- 31:51Speaker 2: I will ever rip, and I'm going to Top's Dynasty.
- 31:54Speaker 2: I'm gonna go with the twenty twenty three Tops Dynasty
- 31:57Speaker 2: Jordan Rookie Patch audit on card Auto one out of
- 32:02Speaker 2: five and going with this one for a few reasons.
- 32:05Speaker 2: Dynasty cards always have this classic feel, really great centering,
- 32:10Speaker 2: glossy finished through a thick card with the patch. But
- 32:14Speaker 2: the patch on this Tops Dynasty card, it's it's good,
- 32:18Speaker 2: it's really really nice. It is not the full red
- 32:22Speaker 2: bird from the Cardinals jersey, but it is the kind
- 32:24Speaker 2: of back half of the red bird, so you can
- 32:27Speaker 2: see that the feathers from the head, you can almost
- 32:30Speaker 2: see where one of the eyes is, and then just
- 32:31Speaker 2: kind of the back of the bird along with a
- 32:34Speaker 2: little bit of what looks to be the cream jersey
- 32:37Speaker 2: on this one as well. So wonderful, wonderful patch. A
- 32:41Speaker 2: really really strong autumn to be frank on this one
- 32:44Speaker 2: as well, which is I'm not really a big sucker
- 32:45Speaker 2: for it, but Jay Walk has a pretty nice auto himself.
- 32:49Speaker 2: So Tops Dynasty currently available about five days left in
- 32:53Speaker 2: the auction here from DC Sports eighty seven, which is
- 32:56Speaker 2: one of the big consignment shops on eBay. Only sixteen
- 33:00Speaker 2: hundred dollars on bids right now, so the market is
- 33:04Speaker 2: hot because I'm guessing you could have bought this card
- 33:07Speaker 2: for Jaywalk last year for roughly one fifty to two hundred,
- 33:11Speaker 2: and now you're making a pretty penny on it.
- 33:14Speaker 1: You really think that this card hit that bottom at
- 33:16Speaker 1: one fifty to two hundred.
- 33:18Speaker 2: I do think so, just because I bought some Gorman
- 33:21Speaker 2: rookie autos from this set, not this exact set, but
- 33:25Speaker 2: like from his rookie year for like less than one
- 33:28Speaker 2: hundred when he is his second year or something, when
- 33:32Speaker 2: he was really struggling. So I again I could be
- 33:34Speaker 2: wrong it maybe it didn't get quite that low, but
- 33:37Speaker 2: he he was struggling with Walker, was real struggling last year,
- 33:40Speaker 2: and so I think it may have got down to
- 33:43Speaker 2: that point.
- 33:44Speaker 1: Yeah, I mean, as somebody who has a decent Dylan
- 33:47Speaker 1: Carlson PC, it never addicted that level, and I wish
- 33:50Speaker 1: it did. That's a funner, that's true.
- 33:52Speaker 2: Trust me, my Gorman's are nowhere near one hundred dollars anymore.
- 33:54Speaker 1: Yeah, exactly. But yeah, this is a beautiful pick, beautiful card. Also,
- 33:58Speaker 1: whoever can sign this to DC sports a seven just
- 34:02Speaker 1: chef's kiss in terms of your timing, because the value
- 34:06Speaker 1: that you're getting back on this is going to be
- 34:08Speaker 1: absurd considering I mean before the home run derby, certainly
- 34:14Speaker 1: I don't even think it would have reached this level
- 34:16Speaker 1: of sixteen hundred bucks that we're looking at right now
- 34:18Speaker 1: it started on Sunday, so got eighty seven watchers. The
- 34:22Speaker 1: other component here too is I think all of the
- 34:26Speaker 1: hobby is a sucker for a good Cardinals patch, as
- 34:28Speaker 1: much as like the Cardinals maybe have their haters out there,
- 34:32Speaker 1: and you know, on top of there's a decent number
- 34:35Speaker 1: of Cardinals collectors in the hobby, but there is something
- 34:38Speaker 1: about the cardinal being in a patch, I think between
- 34:42Speaker 1: the iconic just nature of the cardinal as well as
- 34:47Speaker 1: you don't get too many other like designs like that
- 34:51Speaker 1: on patches because of one the chain stitching. Cardinals use
- 34:55Speaker 1: chain stitching and all of their patches on their home
- 35:00Speaker 1: uniforms that are authentic. I think the Phillies do as well,
- 35:03Speaker 1: and that might be just about it. It is a
- 35:06Speaker 1: more cumbersome kind of process and is much more hearkens
- 35:10Speaker 1: back to the older days of baseball and uniforms. But
- 35:13Speaker 1: then on top of it, like usually on uniforms, you've
- 35:16Speaker 1: just got the names of the teams, so you don't
- 35:18Speaker 1: have anything like the cardinal directly, and so this is
- 35:21Speaker 1: a beautiful pick. You can't get much better than this
- 35:24Speaker 1: Jordan Walker rookie card as a mantlepiece in the PC
- 35:27Speaker 1: because it's also just you got a big old pictured
- 35:30Speaker 1: Jordan Walker Grinnin. It's just perfect.
- 35:34Speaker 2: He's a happy dude. So I love it all. Right,
- 35:36Speaker 2: where's you go? Can you beat a sixteen hundred dollars
- 35:39Speaker 2: card on day four of an auction?
- 35:42Speaker 1: I mean maybe in terms of goofiness, absolutely, So I'm
- 35:45Speaker 1: going to go to twenty twenty three Tops Holiday. This
- 35:48Speaker 1: is a long time favorite set of ours, just holiday
- 35:51Speaker 1: in general, just because you get so many fun little gimmicks,
- 35:54Speaker 1: and twenty twenty three was a pretty fun holiday set
- 35:58Speaker 1: where the design for the year it was kind of
- 36:01Speaker 1: math to me in twenty twenty three. It kind of
- 36:03Speaker 1: goes back to some of the early eighties designs where
- 36:06Speaker 1: you got the photo of the player headshot and then
- 36:09Speaker 1: the action shot kind of layered on top of each other.
- 36:13Speaker 1: But the holiday design with the candy cane borders and
- 36:17Speaker 1: the giant circular snowflakes is a great touch. And I'm
- 36:22Speaker 1: picking the short print. I've actually I've owned this card.
- 36:24Speaker 1: I pulled it out of Tops Holiday back when I
- 36:27Speaker 1: ripped it a few years ago. And I love this
- 36:31Speaker 1: gimmick because usually, I mean, just go back and listen
- 36:34Speaker 1: to one of our Tops holiday pods. We probably covered
- 36:36Speaker 1: twenty twenty three if I recall, because we cover it
- 36:39Speaker 1: every year. But the usually when you do the short
- 36:43Speaker 1: print parallels, you only get one gimmick at a time.
- 36:46Speaker 1: You get lights, a belt like some sort of involved
- 36:50Speaker 1: snowball or elf or something, and maybe some candy canes
- 36:54Speaker 1: and then other just kind of variations of candy cane
- 36:57Speaker 1: like or light or sand of claws, kind of like
- 37:01Speaker 1: different sleeves and socks and stuff. You get two for
- 37:04Speaker 1: one in this short print of Jordan Walker's rookie card.
- 37:07Speaker 1: You get the candy cane bat, you get the Santa
- 37:09Speaker 1: hat as well, and it's very recentably priced. You can
- 37:13Speaker 1: get this for like three or four bucks. I think
- 37:15Speaker 1: it will increase a little bit over time because like
- 37:18Speaker 1: as people kind of suck up all of the Jordan
- 37:22Speaker 1: Walker rookies out there, I think they will gravitate every
- 37:25Speaker 1: once in a while to the short print and once
- 37:27Speaker 1: you see it, I don't think you can resist this card.
- 37:30Speaker 2: Yeah, I'm a big sucker for the talked about it
- 37:33Speaker 2: a few times in this podcast. Is just a very
- 37:35Speaker 2: accessible product. These short prints are so goofy at the
- 37:39Speaker 2: same time, nobody knows what they have when they have it,
- 37:41Speaker 2: So nothing wrong with a candy cane bat the Santa
- 37:45Speaker 2: hat making it happen for Jordan Walker. And ironically like
- 37:49Speaker 2: the stance in this card looks just like he was
- 37:52Speaker 2: the home on derby, so upright, so comfortable. Maybe off
- 37:56Speaker 2: the big smile because he was actually in game action
- 37:58Speaker 2: on the card, but he he definitely looks the part here.
- 38:03Speaker 2: So this is a good card. And I also love
- 38:05Speaker 2: adding a cheap, nice fun card to the PC, So
- 38:09Speaker 2: good pick.
- 38:10Speaker 1: All right, well, let's get to Kyle Schwarber, who has
- 38:13Speaker 1: plenty of cards. You know, it's a decade of Kyle
- 38:17Speaker 1: Schwerber cards now at this point, which is kind of
- 38:19Speaker 1: crazy to think about. Fell just shortened that home run
- 38:23Speaker 1: derby against Jordan Walker certainly put on a good show
- 38:26Speaker 1: and had the Philly faithful behind him, coming off a
- 38:28Speaker 1: fantastic first half as well. Thirty two homers with a
- 38:32Speaker 1: two fifty four, three sixty seven, five sixty slash line
- 38:35Speaker 1: to one forty nine WRC plus. I mean, he's gonna
- 38:40Speaker 1: he's starting to get into a lofty territory. He's gonna
- 38:42Speaker 1: be passed four hundred homers by the end of season,
- 38:45Speaker 1: only gonna be thirty three turning thirty four in March.
- 38:51Speaker 1: He's only going to be like three or four seasons
- 38:53Speaker 1: away from from five hundred homers, assuming he stays healthy,
- 38:56Speaker 1: which will be I think one of the more interesting
- 38:59Speaker 1: Hall of debates, don't you in terms of like Schwerber
- 39:03Speaker 1: getting to five hundred homers, but the war total is
- 39:05Speaker 1: going to be pretty muted that I think he still
- 39:08Speaker 1: might get in just because when you layer in things
- 39:11Speaker 1: like the home run derby that he previously won the
- 39:15Speaker 1: antics from last year's All Star Game, if you remember,
- 39:17Speaker 1: with the swing off as well as some of the
- 39:20Speaker 1: big playoff moments that Schwarber's had, people might overlook the
- 39:24Speaker 1: war total just to put him in because of the
- 39:28Speaker 1: famousness and the five hundred homers. What do you think?
- 39:31Speaker 2: Yeah, I think it's gonna be a big debate because
- 39:33Speaker 2: like this is of all the things we look it
- 39:36Speaker 2: is a power only bat, but he has a very
- 39:39Speaker 2: realistic shot to hit the big milestone, the five hundred
- 39:42Speaker 2: home runs, and I mean I would argue he has
- 39:45Speaker 2: a chance to maybe exceed that by a decent amount
- 39:49Speaker 2: with the way he's played, just depends like the position
- 39:53Speaker 2: he plays, how he plays, he can have some longevity
- 39:58Speaker 2: and so it'll be interesting. He's the guy that he's
- 40:00Speaker 2: like that could play the Nelson Cruz thing, get into
- 40:02Speaker 2: like his forties here and hitty bombs. So I think
- 40:05Speaker 2: that's really where it gets because his career batting average
- 40:07Speaker 2: is two thirty three still in bases, he's got a
- 40:10Speaker 2: thirty nine. He doesn't have a thousand runs or RBIs
- 40:15Speaker 2: at this point. So like his peak has been really
- 40:19Speaker 2: the last you know, five or six years. But he's
- 40:23Speaker 2: you know, he's been productive through cohole career. Is just
- 40:26Speaker 2: is enough well rounded. When you're not playing the field,
- 40:29Speaker 2: you're not doing those other things. But he does have
- 40:30Speaker 2: a World Series under his belt like that, there are
- 40:34Speaker 2: a lot of things for him. So I think, to me,
- 40:36Speaker 2: if he can keep doing this for another three, four,
- 40:39Speaker 2: maybe even five years, it's really a definite possibility. If
- 40:43Speaker 2: he starts to trail off and becomes like a thirty
- 40:44Speaker 2: homer two twenty hitter RS year, I just I don't
- 40:48Speaker 2: think it's gonna happen because it's there's too many other
- 40:51Speaker 2: guys out there that have the power and not much
- 40:54Speaker 2: else to the game.
- 40:55Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, I think that's all very fair. So it
- 40:58Speaker 1: is his first time going into the pod PC. Surprisingly,
- 41:01Speaker 1: I'm actually kind of shocked that he's never rattled off
- 41:04Speaker 1: a Player of the Month award considering how hot he
- 41:07Speaker 1: can sometimes get, which also just shows I want to
- 41:10Speaker 1: go back and see some of those months he got
- 41:13Speaker 1: crazy hot because whoever out hit him really out hit him. So,
- 41:19Speaker 1: first time in the PC for Kyle Sharberg, where are
- 41:20Speaker 1: you going? Yeah?
- 41:22Speaker 2: So went I took a page. I was a book
- 41:26Speaker 2: from somebody that I had at a card show because
- 41:28Speaker 2: I was selling a Kyle or Not Kyle Swore Chris
- 41:31Speaker 2: Bryant autograph card, And like I am trying to collect
- 41:34Speaker 2: the full twenty sixteen Cubs roster for when they win
- 41:39Speaker 2: the World Series. I'm like, you know what, I think
- 41:41Speaker 2: it's a great spot to go with Kyle Schwarber. So
- 41:42Speaker 2: I'm going with his twenty sixteen Bowman Chrome Rookie true
- 41:46Speaker 2: blue refractor out of one fifty the Bowman auto on
- 41:51Speaker 2: this and so color match, you know us, we love
- 41:55Speaker 2: our color matches. Is absolutely a great color match. The
- 41:58Speaker 2: refractor absolutely pops. Schweber has a pretty strong signature all
- 42:03Speaker 2: things considered. It's a little squiggly, but it definitely has
- 42:07Speaker 2: some good good letters in there, not all of them,
- 42:10Speaker 2: but most of them. And this is also like Schwarber
- 42:15Speaker 2: doesn't look that different of a dude in this card
- 42:18Speaker 2: from twenty sixteen that he does ten years later when
- 42:20Speaker 2: he's hitting Bobs in the in the home run derby
- 42:23Speaker 2: for the Phillies, and he just has the same backswing,
- 42:26Speaker 2: looks very very comfortable in this picture. So nothing along
- 42:30Speaker 2: with a rookie. This one probably about runs about three
- 42:33Speaker 2: hundred dollars, being the true blue color match, but still
- 42:36Speaker 2: pretty accessible and probably one of his better early kind
- 42:40Speaker 2: of rookie cards, and also from being from the World
- 42:42Speaker 2: Series season.
- 42:43Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, it's a great pick and just such a
- 42:47Speaker 1: clean blue. The other twenty sixteen Bowman was so dark.
- 42:52Speaker 1: It was just like dark and like weirdly like trying
- 42:57Speaker 1: to be sci fi future ristic. It's got a little
- 43:01Speaker 1: bit of like a mass effect feel if you're familiar
- 43:03Speaker 1: with those video games where honestly those came out in
- 43:06Speaker 1: the early two thousand, so it's almost like a throwback
- 43:09Speaker 1: to a throwback and like it's a it's a strange design.
- 43:14Speaker 1: I'll just put that out there that, like the Tops
- 43:17Speaker 1: cards around this time too, were also just like dark
- 43:20Speaker 1: I don't know why, and so it is, it does
- 43:24Speaker 1: stand out where it's maybe the first time I think
- 43:27Speaker 1: within looking at like twenty sixteen ish cards where I'm
- 43:32Speaker 1: just like, whoa, yeah that was of an age.
- 43:34Speaker 2: Yeah, and it's one of those like it. They turned
- 43:37Speaker 2: the printing presses up a little bit, a little more color.
- 43:39Speaker 2: They have since then the be like, eh uh, the
- 43:41Speaker 2: production costs on this is a little Tighlet's let's not
- 43:43Speaker 2: only ink back a little bit, let's go for the
- 43:46Speaker 2: faded look for the next ten years. So yeah, I
- 43:49Speaker 2: think you're absolutely right. But again, these these ones pop
- 43:52Speaker 2: for sure. So where did you go with mister Schwarber,
- 43:56Speaker 2: mister home run derby runner up?
- 43:58Speaker 1: Yes, so I mean I went to expensive route this
- 44:01Speaker 1: time I'm going to Tops Dynasty twenty twenty. And this
- 44:05Speaker 1: is just a great card where it is still a
- 44:08Speaker 1: Cubs card. So I mean, I guess that's a little
- 44:10Speaker 1: bit of a surprise for us, considering that, you know,
- 44:14Speaker 1: it was a big night in Philadelphia for Shwarbur and
- 44:16Speaker 1: we're not exactly known for loving the Cubs around here,
- 44:18Speaker 1: but we've both gone Cubs cards, mostly because I can't
- 44:22Speaker 1: get away from the patch this on this card that
- 44:24Speaker 1: I found. It is of five. It will be shipped
- 44:28Speaker 1: to you from Japan if you want it. It's just
- 44:30Speaker 1: around seventeen hundred bucks plus probably some import cost and everything.
- 44:35Speaker 1: You're gonna get slapless and terrorists on this baby. But
- 44:38Speaker 1: the patches of the sleeve from the blue uniform of
- 44:42Speaker 1: the Cubs, their alternate uniform where they have a National
- 44:45Speaker 1: League logo on it, which is part of the reason
- 44:47Speaker 1: I went with this that you know, Schwarber has been
- 44:49Speaker 1: a big portion of the All Star Game in the
- 44:51Speaker 1: National League representing it over the past few years. What
- 44:55Speaker 1: better way to go than with a giant portion of
- 44:57Speaker 1: a National League patch, which again kind of like your
- 45:00Speaker 1: cardinal pick for Jordan Walker. You don't see this in
- 45:03Speaker 1: a patch very often. It's a pretty rare thing that
- 45:07Speaker 1: the Cubs are one of the only teams that kind
- 45:09Speaker 1: of has that American League National League patch. So to
- 45:12Speaker 1: get it in a Tops of Dynasty and a crisp
- 45:15Speaker 1: Top Dynasty card where they've kind of it's a grayscale
- 45:18Speaker 1: Tops Dynasty with the blue signature from from Schwarber. This
- 45:23Speaker 1: is a fantastic piece.
- 45:26Speaker 2: Yeah, I already exposed the wonders of Tops Dynasty. This
- 45:31Speaker 2: is a great patch. I wish the patch was right
- 45:33Speaker 2: side up as opposed to sideways. Again who knows they're
- 45:37Speaker 2: But again, this little monochromatic effect of this version of
- 45:42Speaker 2: Tops Dynasty's really really pops like you have. It's kind
- 45:46Speaker 2: of like that old school posed photo from an old
- 45:50Speaker 2: card that you get, but it's on a dual school card.
- 45:54Speaker 2: And again, I love the clean lines of Dynasty. I
- 45:56Speaker 2: love just the way that accentuates all the different pieces
- 45:59Speaker 2: of always doing a great patch. So this is a
- 46:02Speaker 2: fantastic card. I don't know if we've ever added two
- 46:05Speaker 2: out of five Top Dynasty's card to the PC and
- 46:07Speaker 2: in one of these discussions, but both of these are
- 46:10Speaker 2: absolutely absolutely great cards.
- 46:13Speaker 1: Okay, well, let's get to those futures game standouts. So
- 46:17Speaker 1: the MVP from that game was Nathan Fluelling Catcher from
- 46:21Speaker 1: the Tampa Bay Rays, and I mean, I think this
- 46:23Speaker 1: is also a good time to discuss him because we
- 46:25Speaker 1: haven't necessarily had a good spot to discuss him. You know,
- 46:29Speaker 1: We've had a couple of places where we've done prospect updates,
- 46:33Speaker 1: but I've always kind of been unsure about picking Flueling
- 46:38Speaker 1: in that as well as like in our Auto Neo league.
- 46:42Speaker 1: I do think about auctioning him all the time, but
- 46:45Speaker 1: sometimes you can't get over the hurdle of being a
- 46:49Speaker 1: catcher in fantasy dynasty situations for me and even but
- 46:55Speaker 1: this is an other worldly bats so far. He's nineteen
- 46:57Speaker 1: years old, left handed bat has been in the minors
- 47:02Speaker 1: since twenty twenty four, when he was drafted by the
- 47:04Speaker 1: Rays out of high school in Canada. This year in Higa,
- 47:08Speaker 1: it's been really special. Sixteen homers in seventy three games
- 47:13Speaker 1: with a two sixty one, three ninety four fourty ninety
- 47:15Speaker 1: six slash line one thirty WRC plus is a nineteen
- 47:19Speaker 1: year old. There a twenty six percent strikeout rate, but
- 47:22Speaker 1: also sixteen point four percent walk rate, which I mean,
- 47:26Speaker 1: sure the strikeouts are a little high, but when you're
- 47:28Speaker 1: walking that much, I'm fine with it because, honestly, it
- 47:31Speaker 1: also indicates to me that the pitchers are staying away
- 47:33Speaker 1: from fluelling, and some of that strikeout is probably be
- 47:37Speaker 1: because he's chasing. He wants to actually hit the ball
- 47:39Speaker 1: and do something in the box. All of the prospect
- 47:43Speaker 1: reports are gushing about this bat that currently the hit
- 47:47Speaker 1: tool is a future thirty five per Fan grafts, but
- 47:51Speaker 1: that was a twenty twenty six preseason report. I think
- 47:54Speaker 1: that the that will go up a tick and maybe
- 47:58Speaker 1: the power goes up to they have a fifty five
- 48:00Speaker 1: future game power sixty raw. But I think what we've
- 48:03Speaker 1: seen in terms of the performance at the futures game
- 48:06Speaker 1: and what he's shown this year in the minors as
- 48:09Speaker 1: well as I mean, he's only going to get way
- 48:11Speaker 1: stronger as a nineteen year old in High A. What
- 48:15Speaker 1: is your approach here with somebody like Fluelling. Honestly, it's
- 48:19Speaker 1: a little Shwarburian in terms of like the bat might
- 48:22Speaker 1: be ready before the catching skills, and the catching skills
- 48:27Speaker 1: were kind of math in terms of the grades from
- 48:29Speaker 1: the prospect side. So there's a chance the race could
- 48:32Speaker 1: fast track Fluelling to be a DH corner type of guy,
- 48:37Speaker 1: and certainly you won't get the advantage of the catcher position,
- 48:40Speaker 1: but you get the bat before that. So what are
- 48:44Speaker 1: you doing with Fluelling and Dynasty and Keepers?
- 48:47Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean, I think definitely in Dynasty he's a
- 48:50Speaker 2: must own. I don't think there's any question about that.
- 48:52Speaker 2: Keepers depends on how deep. He's probably definitely a watch
- 48:56Speaker 2: for me. I think the knock I have against Luelling
- 49:01Speaker 2: is he plays with the race and you know, that's
- 49:05Speaker 2: kind of fun which could be kind of funny when
- 49:07Speaker 2: the way we talk about the Rays and their player development,
- 49:09Speaker 2: especially on the pitching side. But the Rays do tend
- 49:12Speaker 2: to be a team that likes to move their position
- 49:15Speaker 2: players and then introduce them slowly into the league, which
- 49:17Speaker 2: can be a little frustrating from a fantasy manager perspective.
- 49:20Speaker 2: They like to get them partial playing time, move them
- 49:23Speaker 2: up and down from the minors until they firmly establish themselves. Now,
- 49:26Speaker 2: this is gonna play for everybody, like a junior Campan
- 49:28Speaker 2: narrow type of guy. But you saw that with Chandler
- 49:30Speaker 2: Simpsons last year. We've seen it with other guys throughout
- 49:34Speaker 2: their development system that said, this is a special bat.
- 49:38Speaker 2: He is strong bat, he's in high a nineteen year old,
- 49:41Speaker 2: He's doing really good things. So I think you have
- 49:44Speaker 2: to keep your eye on him. He's going to be
- 49:46Speaker 2: jumping out prospects list for sure.
- 49:48Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, I think I agree that. Like I think
- 49:51Speaker 1: I'm there with Fluelling now, I'm actually more of a
- 49:53Speaker 1: Taitan Gray person myself, a Titan Gray guy. I think
- 49:57Speaker 1: it's a better bat with Gray where and switch hitting
- 50:01Speaker 1: that that is going to have to be a little
- 50:03Speaker 1: bit of like what happens. But at the same time,
- 50:05Speaker 1: you know, you've got how long is YONDI Diaz signed
- 50:08Speaker 1: for here. I don't think it's Yeah, it's only through
- 50:10Speaker 1: next year, and so he is also going to be
- 50:14Speaker 1: thirty six, I think by the time that contract is up,
- 50:18Speaker 1: and so the question will then become Aronda. But that's
- 50:21Speaker 1: exactly the type of player that the Rays move yes,
- 50:25Speaker 1: right at the end of his ARB years to be
- 50:28Speaker 1: able to bring back more and then open it up
- 50:30Speaker 1: for Fluelling and Gray. So I'm actually maybe a little
- 50:34Speaker 1: less concerned because I feel like when the Rays find
- 50:38Speaker 1: a great player, they move them fast and get them
- 50:41Speaker 1: to the majors fast to be able to get the
- 50:44Speaker 1: most out of them. You know, They've done it with
- 50:45Speaker 1: Kyman Arrow, they did it with Wander Franco before they've
- 50:51Speaker 1: I mean, and Chandler Simpson wasn't something special, So like
- 50:55Speaker 1: that's a component of it. But I think that's also
- 50:58Speaker 1: why I'm not too concerned about the Gillen on the
- 51:01Speaker 1: same game, and like, you know, they tried this with
- 51:05Speaker 1: Carson Williams, but Williams cannot hit, so like they will
- 51:10Speaker 1: send a player back down. They're not going to just
- 51:12Speaker 1: like run them out there like Anthony Volpi and make
- 51:14Speaker 1: them just try to figure it out that the Rays
- 51:18Speaker 1: make sure that they develop the players correctly, and if
- 51:22Speaker 1: Fluelling's ready for the majors, they will put them in
- 51:24Speaker 1: the majors. I think so. I think it's somebody that
- 51:27Speaker 1: can be added in. Certainly is already snatched up in dynasties.
- 51:31Speaker 1: But when you're starting to talk like the auto new
- 51:33Speaker 1: leagues that we're in where it's kind of like Dynasty
- 51:36Speaker 1: Slash Keeper with the forty man rosters, that's when you're starting.
- 51:40Speaker 1: I think Fluelling is rosterbull in that type of format.
- 51:44Speaker 2: Now, this is the kind of guy in your new
- 51:46Speaker 2: league that you nominate in the swath of like ten
- 51:49Speaker 2: guys the end of the season, hope you get them
- 51:50Speaker 2: for a buck, and then you decide later and you
- 51:54Speaker 2: keep them. This is the kind of guy you want
- 51:56Speaker 2: to kind of marinate and then grab them before anybody
- 51:59Speaker 2: else realizes that it's going to be a thing.
- 52:02Speaker 1: Okay, well, I mean this is before Fluelling is even debuted.
- 52:06Speaker 1: There are enough cards that we've got to discuss. So
- 52:08Speaker 1: it's actually he's got more cards than t J. Rumfield,
- 52:11Speaker 1: so we've got got a decent number to pick from
- 52:14Speaker 1: for our PC. Where are you going?
- 52:16Speaker 2: Yeah, I'm just thinking pretty basic on this one. I'm
- 52:18Speaker 2: just going the first Bowman Auto. I'm going to Refractor.
- 52:20Speaker 2: So out of four ninety nine from twenty twenty four
- 52:22Speaker 2: Bowmen Draft. You know, this is a good card, Like
- 52:27Speaker 2: the Art Auto, I went with this one just because
- 52:30Speaker 2: they did a pretty gosh darn good job on the
- 52:32Speaker 2: photoshop on this one. But also I love the background
- 52:36Speaker 2: here because he's obviously hitting in some like little high
- 52:42Speaker 2: school stadium or something like that with a very very
- 52:46Speaker 2: strong chain link fence and the piers behind him, and
- 52:50Speaker 2: so it's just the juxtaposition of the Ray's uniform, this
- 52:53Speaker 2: big burly guy hitting and then you have what appears
- 52:58Speaker 2: like is that to be a chain link fence or
- 53:00Speaker 2: even maybe just a batting net behind them. So I
- 53:03Speaker 2: just like the kind of the texture it gives to
- 53:05Speaker 2: the card, which is, you know, a funny way to
- 53:07Speaker 2: I guess as like we're talking about art, I get it.
- 53:10Speaker 2: But going with the first Bowman Refractor for fluelling here,
- 53:16Speaker 2: for the race.
- 53:17Speaker 1: I think, yeah, this is a great pick. You can't
- 53:19Speaker 1: go wrong with the refractor first auto, and it is
- 53:23Speaker 1: a great picture, and especially if he takes off, this
- 53:25Speaker 1: could become semi iconic. I also that background. When I
- 53:29Speaker 1: first looked at it, I thought it was like a
- 53:32Speaker 1: part of the design of the card. It looks like
- 53:33Speaker 1: an X fractor or something, So that kind of even
- 53:36Speaker 1: takes it to another level where sometimes you get boring
- 53:39Speaker 1: backgrounds on these chrome cards, these Bowman cards, where they
- 53:43Speaker 1: especially will photoshop them and make sure that it's out
- 53:46Speaker 1: of focus. But I think they realized that it creates
- 53:50Speaker 1: some of that X fractor feel and kept it in
- 53:52Speaker 1: the card. Fantastic pick, can't go wrong. Yeah, all right,
- 53:59Speaker 1: Well I went with the Tops Now twenty twenty six,
- 54:02Speaker 1: number four forty eight. It's not out yet, so you'll
- 54:06Speaker 1: have to buy the pre order. Because this is the
- 54:09Speaker 1: card that commemorates Fluelling's performance at the Prospects game at
- 54:13Speaker 1: the Futures game, So you can't go wrong with that,
- 54:16Speaker 1: right If you do the PC of the thing, why
- 54:19Speaker 1: not put the card from the thing and the PC
- 54:21Speaker 1: so great little photo of him in the jersey from
- 54:25Speaker 1: the Futures Game, which honestly, they could have put a
- 54:28Speaker 1: little bit more effort into. It does look like they
- 54:30Speaker 1: took a bunch of leftover blank phillies batting BP tops
- 54:35Speaker 1: and just stitch American on the front of it and
- 54:38Speaker 1: a couple of like a raised patch on the side
- 54:40Speaker 1: and it's kind of blank. But yeah, it's a great
- 54:43Speaker 1: commemoration of what Fleelling did. A nice little card with
- 54:47Speaker 1: the red and the blue Jox positioning, which I mean
- 54:51Speaker 1: also is a little strange because he's Canadian, so he's
- 54:53Speaker 1: not American and into the whole America theme that's been
- 54:57Speaker 1: going on with this all star game. But you can't
- 54:59Speaker 1: go wrong with a nice little tops Now card. His
- 55:01Speaker 1: first tops Now card, first official tops card, so it's
- 55:06Speaker 1: gonna be a rookie card of source for Flueling here
- 55:09Speaker 1: from tops Now.
- 55:10Speaker 2: Yeah, no, I like this card. It's a nice design.
- 55:13Speaker 2: I love the Futures game logo this year really pops
- 55:17Speaker 2: and you know, tops Now, maybe you can get a
- 55:20Speaker 2: you know, numbered card out of this, would you when
- 55:22Speaker 2: you order it? Now? To your point, this is one
- 55:26Speaker 2: is gonna be coming. You'll have to buy it then
- 55:29Speaker 2: wait for you know, seven to ten business days. But
- 55:31Speaker 2: maybe we'll get the foil fracture of the red red foil.
- 55:33Speaker 2: There's there's parallels. We're not gonna go through the full list,
- 55:36Speaker 2: but there's some real fun ones for the kind of
- 55:38Speaker 2: the open vision card that is top style. So yeah, good,
- 55:43Speaker 2: good pick.
- 55:44Speaker 1: Yeah. Unfortunately, I think the tops Now sale is already
- 55:48Speaker 1: closed on this, so you're gonna have to go to
- 55:50Speaker 1: the eBay route if you're gonna pick this up. All right,
- 55:54Speaker 1: let's get to the last guy we've got picture, Seth Hernandez.
- 55:58Speaker 1: He didn't win anything from the Futures Game, but everybody
- 56:01Speaker 1: was just raving about getting to watch Seth Hernandez for
- 56:04Speaker 1: the inning that he pitched. And I mean, this guy
- 56:08Speaker 1: is so good. And also I mean it's a little
- 56:11Speaker 1: bit because the bats are a little bit thinner than
- 56:13Speaker 1: they've been, but he is in consideration, I think, for
- 56:17Speaker 1: plenty of number one prospect in baseball overall. As lists
- 56:21Speaker 1: will start coming out here for mid season updates and
- 56:24Speaker 1: when we get into the offseason. From the Pittsburgh Pirates.
- 56:29Speaker 1: Was drafted in twenty twenty five with the sixth overall pick.
- 56:34Speaker 1: He's just been mowing through dudes at single and high
- 56:36Speaker 1: A this year. Sixty nine innings over sixteen starts with
- 56:40Speaker 1: a two sixty one air ray and a three sixty
- 56:43Speaker 1: two FIP with a twenty nine point eight percent K
- 56:47Speaker 1: minus BB. Certainly those numbers were just like otherworldly at
- 56:51Speaker 1: single A, and they've slowed down a little bit at
- 56:54Speaker 1: high A as he's kind of gotten beat up by
- 56:57Speaker 1: the long ball there. But I think that's also just
- 57:00Speaker 1: that league, that environment and playing in Greensboro might be
- 57:05Speaker 1: Homer friendly, if I recall, but I think it is. Yeah,
- 57:09Speaker 1: So something to keep in mind. But I mean, things
- 57:12Speaker 1: are lining up for Hernandez, especially with this Pirates team
- 57:16Speaker 1: being good, like he's got a shot at coming up
- 57:18Speaker 1: next year because certainly the command is still coming together.
- 57:22Speaker 1: But I mean it seems like the Pirates have a
- 57:25Speaker 1: great sense of developing pitching, and I think, especially like
- 57:29Speaker 1: Paul Skins, is a great tool to have within your
- 57:33Speaker 1: organization that could speak to younger guys and also kind
- 57:36Speaker 1: of share things that he's learned in terms of pitch
- 57:40Speaker 1: development and the way that he approaches his workout regimen.
- 57:45Speaker 1: So what do you think about Hernandez from a Dynasty perspective?
- 57:49Speaker 1: Is he the top pitching arm for you? And is
- 57:53Speaker 1: it somebody that you actually are pursuing, despite the risks
- 57:56Speaker 1: that are involved with stashing away arms like this in Dynasty.
- 58:02Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean, I'm not sure I mean to put
- 58:03Speaker 2: him the top. I might have to give that to
- 58:05Speaker 2: Katy Anderson just because of the proximity to the majors,
- 58:08Speaker 2: and so I would say I probably have him as
- 58:11Speaker 2: like a one B to kat Anderson at this point.
- 58:14Speaker 2: But the upside, like it's one of those weird ones
- 58:17Speaker 2: where Anderson looks great and he looks like a frontline guy.
- 58:21Speaker 2: Hernandez looks like he could be a cy young winner.
- 58:24Speaker 2: It's just being further away the injury risk with pictures,
- 58:30Speaker 2: there's that element which is just gonna give me that
- 58:33Speaker 2: little tick down on him, But don't take that the runaway.
- 58:36Speaker 2: He is an absolute surefire prospect, one you want to own.
- 58:41Speaker 2: So I'm extremely excited about him. He's lighting things up,
- 58:44Speaker 2: he looks really comfortable. He look great in the future's game,
- 58:48Speaker 2: So I think he's going to be at the top
- 58:50Speaker 2: of prospect list. The Pirates have become a better organization
- 58:53Speaker 2: for developing pictures. We've seen a lot of things now.
- 58:56Speaker 2: Injuries have kind of played a toll on that but
- 58:59Speaker 2: overall they've really have kind of figured some things out
- 59:02Speaker 2: with pitchers, So you gotta be excited with Hernandez. I
- 59:05Speaker 2: don't think we I don't think there's any way we
- 59:06Speaker 2: see him this year, but I do think early summer
- 59:11Speaker 2: next year, like we have to be talking Seth Hernanda's
- 59:14Speaker 2: coming through and making a debut for the Pirates.
- 59:17Speaker 1: Yeah, I mean, especially if he whittles down that walk
- 59:19Speaker 1: rate that he has at Hya right now, where it's
- 59:22Speaker 1: coming in at thirteen point seven percent. But you know
- 59:25Speaker 1: it's only his first ten starts at HIA as a
- 59:27Speaker 1: twenty year old, and so you know, if he can
- 59:30Speaker 1: show better control, he can certainly move fast, great loose action.
- 59:35Speaker 1: I think that's what I love about the way that
- 59:37Speaker 1: he pitches, where it doesn't look stiff. It's very much
- 59:40Speaker 1: like kind of Cam Schlitzler or Jacob Missiowski six foot
- 59:45Speaker 1: four frames, so he's a little bit smaller than those guys,
- 59:47Speaker 1: but the limbs are huge and it's very loose, So
- 59:52Speaker 1: I think he's going to be Really it is a
- 59:55Speaker 1: situation I agree with you where Anderson I think has
- 59:58Speaker 1: probably in terms of the bell curve, has the better
- 1:00:02Speaker 1: kind of distribution of outcomes, But Hernandez that right tail
- 1:00:06Speaker 1: outcome is like, yeah, first round Fantasy pick year in,
- 1:00:12Speaker 1: year out, YEP. Absolutely, So Yeah, we've actually, we've actually
- 1:00:17Speaker 1: got thousands upon thousands of cards thanks to leaf Metal
- 1:00:21Speaker 1: that sith. Hernandez has been signing for leaf Metal since
- 1:00:24Speaker 1: he was a high schooler, So there's lots and lots
- 1:00:27Speaker 1: of one of one leaf Metal autos out there for
- 1:00:30Speaker 1: us to pick from. I don't think either of us
- 1:00:32Speaker 1: went that way for South Hernandez. But first set of
- 1:00:35Speaker 1: cards we're putting into the PC for him, what did
- 1:00:37Speaker 1: you pick?
- 1:00:39Speaker 2: Yeah, I'm just kind of going with a few things
- 1:00:41Speaker 2: I just talked about. I'm going first Bowman, I'm going
- 1:00:43Speaker 2: to color match, So I'm going with his first Bowman
- 1:00:47Speaker 2: draft twenty twenty five yellow Refractor Auto, which is out
- 1:00:51Speaker 2: of seventy five. The yellow hits with the Pirates logo,
- 1:00:55Speaker 2: the Pirates jersey against photoshop, but it does hit. But
- 1:00:59Speaker 2: the other thing I like this card. Hernanda signs it
- 1:01:01Speaker 2: and he signs it with his high school jersey number
- 1:01:03Speaker 2: twenty two, even though he's been twenty five since he's
- 1:01:06Speaker 2: got into the minor leagues with the Pirates, and so
- 1:01:08Speaker 2: I think It's just a little little fun thing that
- 1:01:10Speaker 2: he's literally signing this card. You know, he signs them
- 1:01:12Speaker 2: in person with the jersey number twenty five on the card,
- 1:01:16Speaker 2: and he signs it with twenty two, and so I
- 1:01:18Speaker 2: love that. I love the little touch when players add
- 1:01:21Speaker 2: like an inscription or something like that. But I think
- 1:01:23Speaker 2: this is kind of one. The other thing I've like
- 1:01:25Speaker 2: most of the cars of stept Fernandez. He looks like
- 1:01:28Speaker 2: he's lost while pitching. He's got his mouth agape, like
- 1:01:31Speaker 2: he's just kind of like kind of just cruising, dude
- 1:01:34Speaker 2: like type of thing, and so I just think that's fun.
- 1:01:37Speaker 2: But this one, just the yellow just absolutely pops. It's
- 1:01:40Speaker 2: listed on eBay for like twenty five hundred bucks because
- 1:01:43Speaker 2: of the color match. I don't I didn't spend the
- 1:01:45Speaker 2: time to look for comps or anything like that. I
- 1:01:47Speaker 2: can't imagine that's what they're actually going for. But I mean,
- 1:01:50Speaker 2: his toff's gonna be through the roof.
- 1:01:52Speaker 1: Yeah exactly. And it's gonna be somebody who it's gonna
- 1:01:55Speaker 1: stay through the roof because he's gonna be so far
- 1:01:58Speaker 1: up of those prospect rankings so along until his debut. Yeah,
- 1:02:02Speaker 1: not gonna be a great ROI but it's gonna be
- 1:02:05Speaker 1: this is a fun card I'll give. I'll give a
- 1:02:08Speaker 1: different view on the twenty two. I think it's just
- 1:02:10Speaker 1: muscle memory from all those leaf metal autographs that he signed.
- 1:02:13Speaker 2: It's very true, very true.
- 1:02:15Speaker 1: I just might take him a little while to shake that.
- 1:02:18Speaker 1: But uh, and it's a if you're into having an
- 1:02:21Speaker 1: Adams Apple PC where you know, you've got a lot
- 1:02:24Speaker 1: of probably Kyle Tucker cards, maybe some Nikabod Crane cards.
- 1:02:28Speaker 1: This card goes in there too. You're Adam's Apple PC. Nice?
- 1:02:32Speaker 2: All right? Where'd you go with Sethnado's?
- 1:02:35Speaker 1: I went Genris?
- 1:02:36Speaker 2: Can you geez?
- 1:02:41Speaker 1: I did it? I went with Donris, but I went
- 1:02:44Speaker 1: with the twenty twenty six Donors clearly, so he is
- 1:02:48Speaker 1: in twenty twenty six Donors, which just came out a
- 1:02:50Speaker 1: few weeks ago. We gave it no time on this podcasts,
- 1:02:56Speaker 1: just a line item in the calendar. But it's not
- 1:02:59Speaker 1: a terrible Donorus design this year that it's it's a
- 1:03:02Speaker 1: little bit of like a twenty twenty or twenty yeah,
- 1:03:07Speaker 1: twenty twenty tops like design sort of, but it goes
- 1:03:10Speaker 1: all the way around in a border, and because of that,
- 1:03:13Speaker 1: it kind of gets back to when Donris was fun
- 1:03:16Speaker 1: in the early nineties, which I like. And the Donorus
- 1:03:19Speaker 1: clearly is going to be an acetate card, so if
- 1:03:23Speaker 1: you're trying to ever get one from a top set,
- 1:03:26Speaker 1: they're only of ten, so they're very rare. And then
- 1:03:29Speaker 1: on top of it, it's only for certain cards. They
- 1:03:31Speaker 1: don't do it for every card in the set. The
- 1:03:33Speaker 1: nice thing about Donners is, you know, if you're looking
- 1:03:36Speaker 1: for a cool assetate card that does what the tops
- 1:03:39Speaker 1: of ten assetate cards does where what I like about
- 1:03:43Speaker 1: them too is there's nothing on the back, you know
- 1:03:45Speaker 1: what I mean. On the tops cards, sometimes they do
- 1:03:48Speaker 1: squeeze in some information. On these Donors, clearly they're just
- 1:03:51Speaker 1: kind of blank, so you get the silhouette of the
- 1:03:52Speaker 1: front of the card on the back, and then yeah,
- 1:03:56Speaker 1: I'm a sucker for an assetate card. It's such like
- 1:03:58Speaker 1: a goofy format for a baseball card. It's so like
- 1:04:01Speaker 1: gimmicky nineties and it's just cool that it's clear. It's
- 1:04:05Speaker 1: just like a piece of plastic that's a card. This
- 1:04:07Speaker 1: is also his rated prospect card, so like, if you're
- 1:04:11Speaker 1: into Donors, maybe that holds some value for you.
- 1:04:13Speaker 2: On a different level.
- 1:04:14Speaker 1: But it's a pretty straightforward sethrin Indez card, and I
- 1:04:17Speaker 1: think that it's something that I mean will still you
- 1:04:21Speaker 1: can move. When he comes up in debuts, people will
- 1:04:24Speaker 1: be scooping up some of these donorous cards and moving
- 1:04:27Speaker 1: them because there are people who are just into donors
- 1:04:30Speaker 1: and this is a clean card of that.
- 1:04:33Speaker 2: Don Res used to be a pretty cool product back
- 1:04:35Speaker 2: in the day. It's harder to get into it now.
- 1:04:38Speaker 2: I'm gonna take one, just swipe at the card just
- 1:04:40Speaker 2: because I can. I'm not sure if they did a
- 1:04:42Speaker 2: better job photoshopping him into a Pirates jersey or put
- 1:04:45Speaker 2: him in the jersey and then taking away everything about it,
- 1:04:48Speaker 2: because he has the yellow and black pin stripe on
- 1:04:51Speaker 2: the jerseys, but then the black hat with no logo,
- 1:04:55Speaker 2: a Great jersey with no words or logos, and so
- 1:04:58Speaker 2: I'm not sure what was harder getting the p stripe on,
- 1:05:01Speaker 2: Like did they did they put him on a full
- 1:05:02Speaker 2: Pirates Uni and then remove the pieces or they just
- 1:05:05Speaker 2: put them in Great Uni and just add the pin
- 1:05:07Speaker 2: stripes like I've got so many questions about the photoshop
- 1:05:10Speaker 2: because they're non licensed with MLB here and how they
- 1:05:13Speaker 2: went about this uh, maybe that's uh, maybe there's a
- 1:05:16Speaker 2: follow up here with that. We're not getting invited to
- 1:05:18Speaker 2: any Don Ross facility after this podcast, by the way,
- 1:05:23Speaker 2: But I would just love to know that the thought
- 1:05:25Speaker 2: process behind how they designed this card, because I always
- 1:05:29Speaker 2: love Don Ross or any Panini type of product where
- 1:05:34Speaker 2: they take the non license but they try to hide it.
- 1:05:36Speaker 2: They just this one, they're like, Nope, not hiding it.
- 1:05:39Speaker 2: It's clearly we don't have the rights to this, but
- 1:05:42Speaker 2: that's okay, it's a minor league card. Let's push it through.
- 1:05:45Speaker 1: Yeah, I mean, I will say, if anything, it's it's
- 1:05:48Speaker 1: kind of working for me compared to some of their
- 1:05:50Speaker 1: other unlicensed stuff, because you know, if he's wearing one
- 1:05:53Speaker 1: of those Pe uniforms that's on the left chest, it's
- 1:05:57Speaker 1: kind of hid him by his arm, and then I
- 1:05:59Speaker 1: mean you've got the black hat, which kind of works
- 1:06:02Speaker 1: it almost Also it helps because like it's almost like
- 1:06:06Speaker 1: a nineteen hundreds throwback Pirates uniform or something, you know,
- 1:06:11Speaker 1: and because that franchise is so old, it kind of fits.
- 1:06:14Speaker 1: And yeah, it's just such a clean card, I think,
- 1:06:17Speaker 1: is what it kind of all boils down to. If
- 1:06:19Speaker 1: it wasn't on a Donorus clearly well, although when I
- 1:06:22Speaker 1: was looking at this, I was almost tempted to pick
- 1:06:25Speaker 1: just the base Donorous card because it's not a bad
- 1:06:28Speaker 1: looking card to me of Seth Hernandez. So it can
- 1:06:31Speaker 1: be a pretty cheap, non licensed PC ad for you
- 1:06:35Speaker 1: out there. So that's going to wrap us up for
- 1:06:38Speaker 1: these four cards or four players that we're putting into
- 1:06:42Speaker 1: our PC eight total cards. You'll see that on rasball
- 1:06:45Speaker 1: dot com. We are speaking. It's now the sixth inning
- 1:06:49Speaker 1: of the All Star Game. It has not changed scores
- 1:06:51Speaker 1: since we started, So we could have maybe already labeled
- 1:06:56Speaker 1: the All Star Game MVP to be Cody Bellinger if
- 1:06:58Speaker 1: he's going to be the only one not runs when
- 1:07:01Speaker 1: it's all said and done. But I feel like we've
- 1:07:03Speaker 1: got a little more drama that we can go and enjoy.
- 1:07:05Speaker 1: So brew let everybody know where they can find you
- 1:07:08Speaker 1: on socials and read your work.
- 1:07:10Speaker 2: Yep, find me Jim Brewer one seven on Twitter, ex
- 1:07:13Speaker 2: Blue sky if I'm me in rasball doing top one
- 1:07:15Speaker 2: hundred hitter rankings and hitter profiles on the weekends. Cooler
- 1:07:18Speaker 2: work when folks find you.
- 1:07:20Speaker 1: Yeah, you can find me on Baseball Perspectives, writing weekly
- 1:07:24Speaker 1: on starting pitching, and then every once in a while
- 1:07:26Speaker 1: on just random topics. So this past week I wrote
- 1:07:28Speaker 1: about dynasty targets from the hitting side that you might
- 1:07:32Speaker 1: be wanting to get that already have big league action
- 1:07:35Speaker 1: and are maybe a lower cost than what you would
- 1:07:39Speaker 1: think for a similar player in the market. You can
