- 1:41[SPEAKER_00]: But first Greg, I want to get your take on how do you feel about the bill's roster, overall the initial 53, what's your takeaway is just overall?
- 1:53[SPEAKER_01]: I would say it's less than exciting, right?
- 1:56[SPEAKER_01]: So I say that lovingly because I think what we went into training camp with is very much kind of what we came out of training camp with.
- 2:04[SPEAKER_01]: Outside of the
- 2:07[SPEAKER_01]: you know, the recent trade here, but we kind of knew who the receivers were.
- 2:10[SPEAKER_01]: We knew Skylar Bell was gonna get caught.
- 2:13[SPEAKER_01]: You know, there might be a couple surprises.
- 2:15[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, the battles we're looking at, really cornerbacks, linebackers, right?
- 2:19[SPEAKER_01]: Maybe keeping four tight ends over a full back.
- 2:23[SPEAKER_01]: I'm cool with it.
- 2:25[SPEAKER_01]: But I don't think there's really been a huge surprise really across any, any positional group.
- 2:35[SPEAKER_00]: And well, and it's one of our topics, you know, for later on, we'll talk about how this roster was built as opposed to the previous nine years under Sean McDermott.
- 2:46[SPEAKER_00]: I, the four tight ends thing in the five wide receivers thing to me, until I saw the practice squad additions was.
- 2:54[SPEAKER_00]: Huh, maybe they're going to use one of these guys as a full back.
- 2:58[SPEAKER_00]: Maybe they consider Dalton can cade more of a pass catcher.
- 3:02[SPEAKER_00]: They're going to give him more of a pass catcher role.
- 3:05[SPEAKER_00]: And then instead of just a lot of straight up blocking stuff, because they did keep a lot to.
- 3:09[SPEAKER_00]: And I like him.
- 3:10[SPEAKER_00]: I think he played well in the five games he played last year.
- 3:14[SPEAKER_00]: He showed a little promise and preseason.
- 3:17[SPEAKER_00]: take pre-season for what you want to take it for or take it with a grain of salt.
- 3:22[SPEAKER_00]: But then adding wide receivers, I honestly, when I did my initial 53 man projection, I had them keeping trench her field because of his special teams ability.
- 3:34[SPEAKER_00]: So with them not going with a wide receiver that's going to be playing on special teams, it's kind of what what what's your thoughts
- 3:45[SPEAKER_00]: in previous years Sean McDermott made a point to let us all know about how important special teams was.
- 3:50[SPEAKER_00]: And I agree it is it is important and that's where you get like the fringe roster guys, the the backup safety's back of linebackers, backup, wider severs, the the the six why we see what's your what's your thoughts on how the wide receiver room is constructed.
- 4:07[SPEAKER_00]: And then now knowing what's on the practice squad, like what's your thoughts there?
- 4:11[SPEAKER_01]: So I think what's going to be really interesting here is really like how many receivers that we have an act of on game day right because we've got right out with 10 offensive linemen.
- 4:21[SPEAKER_01]: There's no way we're going to have 10 dressing on game day so like I think it'd be filmed in some of the spots with you know you are receivers slash special teamer.
- 4:31[SPEAKER_00]: You don't.
- 4:32[SPEAKER_01]: I think this goes into the ultimate question.
- 4:33[SPEAKER_01]: There's, it goes without saying, where there's a lot of variables, a lot of unknowns going into this year between defense, between offensive philosophy, between, you know, whether this whole other topic, but whether McDermott was actually holding this team back or not.
- 4:47[SPEAKER_01]: you know, the problem I got with receivers here is that like, are we going pedal to the floor, unleashing Josh Allen, we need five receivers out there, you know, throking Kate in there, so maybe he's, you know, receiver four, whatever, like, what are we doing on offense and what's that offense of philosophy?
- 5:05[SPEAKER_01]: And I don't think that's the thing we know yet.
- 5:07[SPEAKER_01]: And ultimately, that dictates to me, like what our special teams looks like from, you know, a returner or we just stick in key on back there and go, okay, we got receivers and if he gets hurt, he gets hurt, right, so we obviously got dorked sign yesterday, so it's kind of your indication there.
- 5:25[SPEAKER_01]: a little bit that they're going to have some of that special team receiver depth dressing on game day.
- 5:29[SPEAKER_01]: But to me, the biggest question is like, what is this offense of philosophy?
- 5:34[SPEAKER_01]: Are we rolling out there?
- 5:35[SPEAKER_01]: You know, the four tight ends might be your indication for that.
- 5:38[SPEAKER_01]: Like you said, are we keeping and can take, can Kate as a past catcher more than a blocker?
- 5:44[SPEAKER_01]: And if so, what's his health?
- 5:46[SPEAKER_01]: And maybe we need to have the extra tight ends on the roster, because we're not sure he's going to stay healthy.
- 5:52[SPEAKER_01]: And if he's not healthy, you need that extra pass catcher.
- 5:54[SPEAKER_01]: So there's a lot of unknowns to me as far as what that receiving core looks like.
- 5:59[SPEAKER_01]: And I include tight ends into that.
- 6:01[SPEAKER_01]: Trickles down to tight end or a trickle knuckle team.
- 6:04[SPEAKER_00]: So I really don't know what that philosophy is going to be this year.
- 6:08[SPEAKER_01]: And I got a little sense of it in preseason.
- 6:10[SPEAKER_01]: We're also saw those quick screens of the receivers.
- 6:12[SPEAKER_01]: And I'm like, you don't need four receivers for that thing.
- 6:16[SPEAKER_01]: So I don't really know what we're looking at here.
- 6:19[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, I mean, I, I think none of us do, right?
- 6:22[SPEAKER_00]: I feel like that's been the conversation since Joe Brady was named head coach was, are we gonna see the real Joe Brady?
- 6:32[SPEAKER_00]: You know, was there a governor on Josh Allen because Sean McDermott wanted to control the clock, wanted to run the ball, wanted to play hard-nosed football, smash mouth, keep the other team off the field, which is not a bad philosophy.
- 6:49[SPEAKER_00]: When I'm thinking about it, I kind of get stuck in the middle somewhere because you have this Ferrari that you just want to put the pedal to the floor with in Josh Allen right you have this unicorn once in a lifetime generational talent we saw with Brian dayball how.
- 7:04[SPEAKER_00]: The bills would be up by 21 points in the fourth quarter, and they would still be throwing the ball down field, just because if you can't stop us, we're just gonna make it so that you just can't catch up, right?
- 7:15[SPEAKER_00]: So I don't know, I honestly think, and I wanna get your thoughts on DJ Moore, because no matter where you go to, and I don't listen to a lot of the national media talking heads, because I think it's just a lot of fluff, and I think that they,
- 7:30[SPEAKER_00]: just say things to generate clicks and outrage and rage bait and all that stuff plus they know Bill's fans are always going to interact with whatever they put out on social media right because we're we're like that we're rabbit right.
- 7:45[SPEAKER_00]: What is your overall thoughts on DJ more?
- 7:48[SPEAKER_00]: Do you think that he's going to come in and have a digs light like?
- 7:55[SPEAKER_00]: feel to the offense with him and Josh Allen.
- 7:59[SPEAKER_00]: We've seen and heard about, you know, the chemistry is all the charts in a lot, a lot was made about the relationship or lack that are of Josh Allen and Kian Coleman because Josh Allen's older than Kian Coleman, Coleman's still young.
- 8:13[SPEAKER_00]: He's, he doesn't have a family.
- 8:16[SPEAKER_00]: He's, it's a different, almost a different generation
- 8:23[SPEAKER_00]: And they're the same age.
- 8:24[SPEAKER_00]: They were in the same draft class.
- 8:25[SPEAKER_00]: They have a wife and kids.
- 8:27[SPEAKER_00]: They have dead things to talk about stuff like that.
- 8:30[SPEAKER_00]: So what's your thoughts on D.J.
- 8:33[SPEAKER_00]: more?
- 8:34[SPEAKER_00]: Can he be a 1200 yard receiver?
- 8:36[SPEAKER_00]: Is this something that what happened last in Chicago was kind of an outlier?
- 8:42[SPEAKER_00]: Is he still good at his age 29?
- 8:44[SPEAKER_00]: Like what's your thoughts?
- 8:47[SPEAKER_01]: First of all, love the addition.
- 8:48[SPEAKER_01]: So would I rather have some like Justin Jefferson, of course, but love the addition, right?
- 8:54[SPEAKER_01]: The receiving room last year, I mean, it was just brutal, right?
- 8:57[SPEAKER_01]: I'm looking at going every game, like how do we win this thing?
- 9:00[SPEAKER_01]: And you know, I think James Cook really saved the season last year, my opinion.
- 9:04[SPEAKER_01]: But the more addition to me is
- 9:09[SPEAKER_01]: It can't be overstated.
- 9:10[SPEAKER_01]: We've got opening up lanes for other people, opening up a space forum, which should theoretically help Kian a little bit as well.
- 9:18[SPEAKER_01]: I'm not a Kian fan.
- 9:20[SPEAKER_01]: Sorry, I don't, I don't see the potential there, but, uh,
- 9:24[SPEAKER_01]: you know I think the DJ more thing is huge right it gives you a bona fide receiver the guy catches ball you saw I don't put a lot of stock in preseason first game right he's out there catching passes he's getting his feet down on the borders he's taken hits hopefully he's say salty but like how can you be upset with this move right it is exactly what they needed sprinkle that in are we gonna have a healthy Josh Palmer this year because
- 9:51[SPEAKER_01]: You know, if we can get a healthy Palmer, you know, opens up a little bit of size and speed there as well.
- 9:56[SPEAKER_01]: You should be able to fit this in nicely.
- 9:58[SPEAKER_01]: 1200 yards, I don't know, Dave, like this is a...
- 10:02[SPEAKER_01]: I don't think if you hit 12, you don't hit 1200 yards, it's not necessarily a bad thing.
- 10:08[SPEAKER_01]: It doesn't necessarily make it a great thing, right?
- 10:10[SPEAKER_01]: So if you're spreading the ball out a little bit more and the guy's got 900 yards, or you don't hit 1200, but Palmer is going for more than a buck 50 or whatever he did last year.
- 10:19[SPEAKER_01]: right you're you're spreading this out hopefully she here keeps us up as numbers right so we can to be that around hopefully it can kates healthy a little bit and we get him going a little bit uh so i don't think you need 1200 yards to be successful if he's going for 1200 i think that's Joe Brady opened up the offense to him or just tells you no one else can get open but i've got a hard time believing that he's gonna be able to get open and no one else can so
- 10:43[SPEAKER_01]: You know, I think if you're going over 800, probably having a decent year, but if it's only 800, anyone else to shut down, then we got bigger and we have to provide, but I personally love the addition, man.
- 10:55[SPEAKER_01]: I don't know what you.
- 10:56[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, I think, you know, a lot was made about the last two years of not having a bonafide number one, Kaleel Shakir by default was the number one guy because he was the most reliable.
- 11:10[SPEAKER_00]: He was on the field, every game he
- 11:14[SPEAKER_00]: was Joe Brady's Swiss Army knife type guy, where he would throw the bubble screens.
- 11:18[SPEAKER_00]: And we saw at times, over the last two years, especially during Josh Jones MPC's, and he could go down field.
- 11:25[SPEAKER_00]: So I think for me, they're like, and I've said this for a while now, there's some what ifs, like you mentioned, Joshua Palmer.
- 11:34[SPEAKER_00]: If he can stay healthy, it's okay if he has that same rule he had with the chargers.
- 11:39[SPEAKER_00]: If he wants 40 catches 500 yards, but he's also making a big splash play here and there.
- 11:46[SPEAKER_00]: I think what you have with DJ Moore.
- 11:49[SPEAKER_00]: is you have the ability to warrant coverage, which the bills haven't had in a couple of years, since stuff on Dix.
- 11:55[SPEAKER_00]: So with the emergence, I feel like, as the season progresses of Scattered Bell, too, another guy that runs a whole bunch of the routes.
- 12:02[SPEAKER_00]: He's a guy that's not just in a box, right?
- 12:05[SPEAKER_00]: He's not just a Slack guy, he's not just a, he runs intermediate stuff like he, we saw, even with Shane Bouchell that he could do some things all over the field.
- 12:15[SPEAKER_00]: So I'm excited.
- 12:19[SPEAKER_00]: I think the biggest thing for me, what the widersy room is, the unknown aspects like you mentioned of what this offense is going to actually look like because we don't know, right?
- 12:30[SPEAKER_00]: We hope that Dalton can gain, can be healthy.
- 12:33[SPEAKER_00]: Are we still going to get a heavy dose of James Cook?
- 12:35[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, he had 300 plus touches last year.
- 12:38[SPEAKER_00]: Is that something that
- 12:40[SPEAKER_00]: Joe Brady wants to cut down on some of the runs and add him more into the passing volume to get him still the same amount of touches.
- 12:47[SPEAKER_00]: So I think that's a biggest question, but I want to talk about the offensive line for a minute because the bills lost their offensive line coach, right?
- 12:59[SPEAKER_00]: And they decided to keep 10 on the roster.
- 13:02[SPEAKER_00]: Like you said, I don't think they're going to dress 10 on game day.
- 13:04[SPEAKER_00]: They'll probably dress 8 or 9, which is kind of what they did last year.
- 13:10[SPEAKER_00]: And now we're going to find out if that was a McDermott thing, or if that was a Brandon Bean thing, right?
- 13:14[SPEAKER_00]: We'll see what they do this year.
- 13:17[SPEAKER_00]: But I like four of the five options we have at the offensive line.
- 13:23[SPEAKER_00]: I'm still a little concerned about Eric Anderson.
- 13:28[SPEAKER_00]: was given the starting position a few weeks back, you know, or actually last week, he was given the starting position.
- 13:34[SPEAKER_00]: Joe Brady came out and said our starting left guard is Alkanderson.
- 13:37[SPEAKER_00]: I think that was the right move by Joe Brady to do that because then...
- 13:43[SPEAKER_00]: And then he has that confidence going through the rest of what's left of the next two weeks before the season starts.
- 13:49[SPEAKER_00]: You can practice that way.
- 13:51[SPEAKER_00]: You can practice as Alec Anderson as your starting left guard.
- 13:53[SPEAKER_00]: You don't have to shift guys in and out.
- 13:55[SPEAKER_00]: Those guys know their roles.
- 13:57[SPEAKER_00]: Austin Corbett now knows his role.
- 13:59[SPEAKER_00]: Plus, you know, Joe Brady ran a lot of six offensive linemen in two years when he was the offensive coordinator.
- 14:07[SPEAKER_00]: What's your take overall?
- 14:09[SPEAKER_00]: Are you confident like you, like, like how this offensive line has been the last two years?
- 14:15[SPEAKER_00]: Spencer Brown has missed a little bit of time and the spring the summer didn't play much in preseason.
- 14:22[SPEAKER_00]: The game he did play.
- 14:23[SPEAKER_00]: I'm not going to lie.
- 14:24[SPEAKER_00]: Didn't look great.
- 14:26[SPEAKER_00]: Take it for a grain of solid.
- 14:27[SPEAKER_00]: It's preseason.
- 14:29[SPEAKER_00]: Deans coming off of his transitional will call it transitional year where he's dropped weight.
- 14:35[SPEAKER_00]: Connor McGuvern hasn't played or practiced a lot.
- 14:39[SPEAKER_00]: He didn't play one snap and preseason and he's reportedly good to go.
- 14:43[SPEAKER_00]: Then you have Alka Anderson and Osiris Torrance, the guys who are healthy and ready to go.
- 14:47[SPEAKER_00]: So what's your, is there, is there a concern level I guess for the offensive line for you?
- 14:53[SPEAKER_01]: For me, yes, I'm not a hot take guy, but the last two years I've been very,
- 15:05[SPEAKER_01]: less, I am not as high on the offensive line the last couple of years as everyone else has been.
- 15:12[SPEAKER_01]: I think it's a good offensive line, maybe above average offensive line, the stats will tell you how phenomenal they are.
- 15:18[SPEAKER_01]: And again, I don't know how much of this is on Josh Allen's trusted, I'm Josh Allen's trust in the receivers.
- 15:25[SPEAKER_01]: Last, Josh was running for his life last year.
- 15:28[SPEAKER_01]: And some of those he was bailing out of that pocket before he needed to bail out.
- 15:32[SPEAKER_01]: That tells me you either don't trust your receivers to get open unless you're buying time for him.
- 15:37[SPEAKER_01]: Or you're not trusting your offensive line 100%.
- 15:39[SPEAKER_01]: And I think it's probably a combination, both sides can be true.
- 15:43[SPEAKER_01]: I look at the same thing this year.
- 15:44[SPEAKER_01]: I think there are good offensive line.
- 15:46[SPEAKER_01]: It'd be above average offensive line.
- 15:47[SPEAKER_01]: But I still have these concerns because like you said, we're bringing back people, right?
- 15:53[SPEAKER_01]: Like, I go down this offensive line, I go, who do you want to kick out?
- 15:56[SPEAKER_01]: I don't know if I want to kick anyone out to be honest with you, but I'm not, they're not all world-lead, all five positions.
- 16:02[SPEAKER_01]: And I think that's the concern I have.
- 16:04[SPEAKER_01]: And is Josh gonna be running for his life now?
- 16:06[SPEAKER_01]: Maybe, you know, can we maybe do a little more actual screen passes as opposed to these why receiver, you know, these quick screens?
- 16:13[SPEAKER_01]: Can we actually have Josh come back and dump it off the cooks?
- 16:16[SPEAKER_01]: I think they did that once, maybe last week at the season or something last year.
- 16:20[SPEAKER_01]: And I was like, oh my God, we did it.
- 16:23[SPEAKER_01]: But that should solve the past rush a little bit, right?
- 16:25[SPEAKER_01]: It should give that line a little bit of help.
- 16:26[SPEAKER_01]: So I think it's a good offense of line.
- 16:29[SPEAKER_01]: I'm not overly concerned, but I do have concerns.
- 16:32[SPEAKER_01]: And it's the same ones I've had the last couple of years.
- 16:34[SPEAKER_01]: I'm watching Josh run for his life.
- 16:35[SPEAKER_01]: He's getting, like, that Texas game I know anomaly, right?
- 16:38[SPEAKER_01]: We probably had Josh probably had a concussion that game.
- 16:41[SPEAKER_01]: We know Spencer Brown, we know Dion had a concussion.
- 16:45[SPEAKER_01]: Spencer Brown was all banged up, right?
- 16:47[SPEAKER_01]: He was running for his life, though, right?
- 16:49[SPEAKER_01]: Like we saw Atlanta crushed them last year, right?
- 16:52[SPEAKER_01]: But this was a repeated theme.
- 16:54[SPEAKER_01]: And I'm kind of in the same place.
- 16:57[SPEAKER_01]: I'm good with it.
- 17:00[SPEAKER_01]: But there's gonna be games this year where Josh is going to be running.
- 17:03[SPEAKER_01]: And he's going to be running hard and he's probably gonna bail out a little quicker than he needs to.
- 17:07[SPEAKER_01]: And again, I think that's gonna come down.
- 17:09[SPEAKER_01]: So hopefully there's continuity.
- 17:10[SPEAKER_01]: Hopefully people stay healthy again which they've been unbelievably healthy last couple of years.
- 17:15[SPEAKER_01]: But I do have concerns.
- 17:20[SPEAKER_00]: And I'll list them all off.
- 17:21[SPEAKER_00]: Deans coming off of not a great season.
- 17:25[SPEAKER_00]: He has admittedly come out and said that he was playing over wait.
- 17:30[SPEAKER_00]: He just, his body didn't feel right last year.
- 17:32[SPEAKER_00]: He wasn't bad by any stretch of the imagination last year.
- 17:36[SPEAKER_00]: You have a new left guard.
- 17:37[SPEAKER_00]: You have Connor McGuvern who's the center who hasn't played.
- 17:40[SPEAKER_00]: We haven't seen him.
- 17:41[SPEAKER_00]: I don't think in Peds since the spring or middle of summer when they weren't even tackling, I don't think.
- 17:50[SPEAKER_00]: then you have the right side, which is the same.
- 17:52[SPEAKER_00]: We play the Houston Texans week one.
- 17:55[SPEAKER_00]: Now, week one to me is always like an outlier because I feel like both teams are going to be trying to figure some stuff out, right?
- 18:04[SPEAKER_00]: Like we don't know what to expect from Joe Brady.
- 18:07[SPEAKER_00]: And we'd also don't know what to expect from the Texans because Yes, we have film on what they did last year.
- 18:12[SPEAKER_00]: And I'm sure they'll implement some of what they did last year into the game plan because it was so very effective.
- 18:18[SPEAKER_00]: And they've brought in more guys, by the way, Texans defenses is absolutely insane.
- 18:22[SPEAKER_00]: So,
- 18:23[SPEAKER_00]: I think week one is going to be we're going to find out real quick about how much of a governor was on Joe Brady's offense because if he comes out and he has a whole bunch of stuff sprinkled in that we had no idea even existed to help the offensive line in week one to help these receivers in week one to help Josh in week one that's what I'm looking forward to and again
- 18:48[SPEAKER_00]: It's going to be a progressive thing, right, because they're going to have to get through week one and then the schedule doesn't get any easier as we go along.
- 18:55[SPEAKER_00]: Obviously, we know how tough the bill schedule was to open the season, but alright, let's talk about running backs.
- 19:01[SPEAKER_01]: So real quick Dave, I think one of the, probably the benefits of that Houston game with Josh getting an absolute crush last year and that line getting shredded was pretty took tons of heat afterward for not making adjustments for how to shift over blocks and double teams and stuff like that.
- 19:21[SPEAKER_01]: As much as I hate to say it like less and learn and that's something going into this year.
- 19:26[SPEAKER_01]: I don't see that happening again.
- 19:28[SPEAKER_01]: I think that they've got a plan going into each of these games and if we're going to rip the power here, what do we do?
- 19:33[SPEAKER_01]: So if I'm taking a silver lining out of that game last year, that's the silver lining up pulling out.
- 19:38[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, correct me if I'm wrong and somebody in the check and correct me if I'm wrong is that not the game where Josh was on the side the sideline and he took us helmet off and he said what are we doing.
- 19:48[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, and it was on camera.
- 19:50[SPEAKER_00]: It was that game, right.
- 19:51[SPEAKER_00]: So I mean, that's the game he got how many times he got sack nine times that game I think eight or not.
- 19:57[SPEAKER_01]: He might have been a hit.
- 19:58[SPEAKER_01]: I think he was hitting the team times.
- 19:59[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 20:00[SPEAKER_00]: So, all right, I want to kind of, I want to keep going through this roster because I like this.
- 20:05[SPEAKER_00]: Obviously, we don't need to touch too much on quarterbacks.
- 20:07[SPEAKER_00]: Um, actually, let me, let me, let me just kind of poke at this for a minute.
- 20:12[SPEAKER_00]: Back up quarterback.
- 20:13[SPEAKER_00]: Is this an important topic to you?
- 20:16[SPEAKER_01]: Uh, scale 1 to 10.
- 20:18[SPEAKER_01]: I put it like a 3.
- 20:20[SPEAKER_01]: I think in here's why like if Josh is out for him and he's sort of length of time right say it doesn't matter Eaks I don't care who you throw back there right so if he's out for say two to three weeks right Maybe he's got a niece brain or something like that, you know, whatever some sort of two to three weeks I would love someone I'm a fan of get the best frickin player you can
- 20:42[SPEAKER_01]: All right, and that's where I sit with it.
- 20:44[SPEAKER_01]: So I think there's better options in Kyle Allen.
- 20:48[SPEAKER_01]: Always has been, always probably will be, but I think can he get you through two to three weeks?
- 20:53[SPEAKER_01]: Maybe four, right?
- 20:54[SPEAKER_01]: Can he go three and one or just kind of studied the ship?
- 20:58[SPEAKER_01]: I'm not confident he can, so it's low concern, but also, like, it's more than four or five weeks.
- 21:06[SPEAKER_01]: What are we even talking about?
- 21:07[SPEAKER_01]: I don't think it's gonna be.
- 21:07[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, it doesn't matter.
- 21:08[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, so I've been on this since,
- 21:12[SPEAKER_00]: I don't know, five years now that I, and they tried, they, they, they drafted Jake from and that we saw how that didn't work, but I just maybe think that that was just a bad pick.
- 21:22[SPEAKER_00]: I think if you're going to invest in the position, it has to be a draft pick and I just feel like Brandon being doesn't feel comfortable putting a 22 23 year old guy behind Josh when he can get.
- 21:37[SPEAKER_00]: And now, let's remember Josh has a lot of say in this too, right?
- 21:42[SPEAKER_00]: Like I guarantee you, Tribisky coming back, he had a lot of say in Kyle Allen coming back.
- 21:47[SPEAKER_00]: He had a lot of say in Shane Bouchell staying around.
- 21:50[SPEAKER_00]: He has a lot of say in because those are guys that have been in the room with him and he trusts them.
- 21:55[SPEAKER_00]: So, I mean, like you said, if,
- 21:58[SPEAKER_00]: If it's, you know, like last year, Mitch came in during the Jets game when Josh got punched in the nose and then Mitch played against the Jets in week 18 when it was a nobody cares game like that's fine, but if Josh goes down in in week three and it's an extended injury the seasons over like it doesn't it doesn't matter who who you have unless you go find a guy who's started a bunch of games and you make a trade so I don't really think having Kyle Allen is is.
- 22:27[SPEAKER_00]: I don't think it moves the needle one way or the other from being honest.
- 22:29[SPEAKER_00]: I do like a question from Roy talking about the Houston game.
- 22:34[SPEAKER_00]: How concern are you with the Houston offense?
- 22:36[SPEAKER_00]: I'm not actually.
- 22:39[SPEAKER_00]: Nico Collins and who else?
- 22:42[SPEAKER_00]: Like, if you watch what CJ Stroud did in the postseason last year, I'm not saying that's going to happen again this season.
- 22:50[SPEAKER_00]: Maybe it was a sophomore slump, but I just, I'm not really overly concerned and if that
- 22:57[SPEAKER_00]: can the bills just score more points than the Texans?
- 23:00[SPEAKER_00]: then I think we're okay because again, it's the Texan's defense going against the bill's offense, right?
- 23:05[SPEAKER_00]: So can we move the ball, can we score points no matter because the bill's defense is an unknown.
- 23:12[SPEAKER_00]: Like we have no idea what we're going to see in week one.
- 23:14[SPEAKER_00]: We have absolutely, we talked about the offense, but the defense, we have absolutely no idea what we're going to see from this defense.
- 23:21[SPEAKER_00]: We don't know if they're going to be aggressive, they're going to be bloodseeing, they're going to be pressing all over.
- 23:25[SPEAKER_00]: We have no idea.
- 23:27[SPEAKER_00]: So what's your thoughts on that he had the Texan's offense?
- 23:30[SPEAKER_01]: I'm like you, Dave, I'm really not concerned by it.
- 23:33[SPEAKER_01]: I think the biggest, I mean, really the biggest caveat to me is the Buffalo side of things, right?
- 23:39[SPEAKER_01]: Can what does our defense look like?
- 23:40[SPEAKER_01]: Do we have the people on plays?
- 23:41[SPEAKER_01]: Do we, I think we're fine, right?
- 23:43[SPEAKER_01]: Nico Collins, he's going to get his a little bit.
- 23:45[SPEAKER_01]: I think we'll be fine, but we've seen, you know, just kind of progression from every one on defense, at least that is returning for the most part, improving year over year.
- 24:00[SPEAKER_01]: CJ Stroud is going to see things he's not used to seeing with this bill's defense.
- 24:04[SPEAKER_01]: Then he was with another McDermott defense, which was, let's be honest with you.
- 24:09[SPEAKER_01]: It was like a bend of, but don't break, which for someone like, I'm not high on Stroud whatsoever.
- 24:13[SPEAKER_01]: It wasn't coming out of college.
- 24:15[SPEAKER_01]: It was eating Crow that first year was given a back last year.
- 24:20[SPEAKER_01]: I'm not sold on them, right?
- 24:21[SPEAKER_01]: And I think when you do a bend but don't bring defense, the guy can make some throws here and there, but any and if I'll quarterback can, right, kind of like I only can do those things.
- 24:28[SPEAKER_01]: I think you have, it makes it easy for him to play quarterback.
- 24:32[SPEAKER_01]: He can find a five, seven-yard dump off because it's their form all the time because you're just preventin' the big play.
- 24:38[SPEAKER_01]: Like he might get, Kyle's might get a deep touchdown this week one, whatever.
- 24:43[SPEAKER_01]: Like he's not scoring four or five, and I think the bills offense will be up there outpaste some fairly easily.
- 24:49[SPEAKER_00]: I'm actually not concerned by this Houston game whatsoever.
- 24:52[SPEAKER_00]: Really, that's a good take.
- 24:54[SPEAKER_00]: And once we get closer, we'll dive more into what's we get closer to September 13th.
- 24:59[SPEAKER_00]: We'll dive more into all of that.
- 25:02[SPEAKER_01]: This is five minutes after me saying the offense of Lyonum.
- 25:05[SPEAKER_01]: I'll put you down.
- 25:08[SPEAKER_00]: uh Greg's all over the place so if you guys haven't already smash the like button please smash the like button wherever you're watching this if you're watching a new tube smash it Facebook smash it if you're watching a new tube please subscribe to our channel We got a lot of good stuff coming again.
- 25:21[SPEAKER_00]: Greg and myself will be here Monday through Friday
- 25:24[SPEAKER_00]: We have the two minute bill on Saturday.
- 25:26[SPEAKER_00]: We have the post podium podcast our money's in Friday's Is he in the red zone report on Sunday's we got triple coverage podcast on Thursday So we got a lot of stuff going on to get you geared up for the bills season and throughout so I wanted to talk about running backs because
- 25:45[SPEAKER_00]: Ty Johnson being on the act of roster makes me happy.
- 25:48[SPEAKER_00]: I like this, although I do think that Frank Gore would have been fine for like a week or two, but James Cook, because everybody who wants to argue against Bill's fans, because everybody says that Josh Allen has no help, will always say, well, they have James Cook, where he was on the top 100 and he had 1600 yards.
- 26:10[SPEAKER_00]: So in a perfect world,
- 26:13[SPEAKER_00]: James Cook season looks like blank to you.
- 26:19[SPEAKER_01]: Oh, damn, David, let's go question.
- 26:21[SPEAKER_01]: I'm gonna go, I don't know.
- 26:27[SPEAKER_01]: Let's go, let's go 35 receptions and 1,000 yards.
- 26:36[SPEAKER_01]: All right, get me 15, the 1600 overall yards from him and I think I'm good.
- 26:42[SPEAKER_01]: I'd like to see his reception numbers come up, like I said, I want to see some more running back screens, pull him off, give him space, because the guy can run in space and he can make people miss.
- 26:53[SPEAKER_01]: He is just so good, and from a running back standpoint, I think he's going to find his holes, he's going to get his a little bit, but I think 1500 overall yards, I don't really care how they come, but I'd like to see, I'd like to see if you wonder those coming the receiving side.
- 27:08[SPEAKER_00]: about you.
- 27:09[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, I agree like I don't I don't really need to have James Cook to have the rushing title like it doesn't matter to me.
- 27:15[SPEAKER_00]: I know what breakaway play ability he has who can score from anywhere on the field.
- 27:20[SPEAKER_00]: Like he can score from the five yard line.
- 27:23[SPEAKER_00]: the opposing five yard line all the way to their own five yard.
- 27:26[SPEAKER_00]: Like he can score from wherever and that's I'm good with that.
- 27:29[SPEAKER_00]: So when he was coming out of Georgia like that was one of the biggest things that I think that a lot of Bill's fans got excited about was that he was a good pass catch in running back like that's what he excelled at in Georgia.
- 27:39[SPEAKER_00]: So if they can get more to it and when they do it it works like when he has designed routes it works and I'm not even talking about
- 27:48[SPEAKER_00]: do even know what a running back screen pass is like you alluded to earlier.
- 27:52[SPEAKER_00]: If you're going to throw screens and now I understand you have to have the scheme and the offensive line ability to do that and maybe that's something that they just didn't do on purpose for whatever reason.
- 28:04[SPEAKER_00]: But I feel like something came out this offseason about how Joe Brady is actively using the running backs in practice as receivers.
- 28:14[SPEAKER_00]: I liked that because
- 28:16[SPEAKER_00]: I feel like that helps your quarterback, if anything, right?
- 28:20[SPEAKER_00]: That get the ball out of his hands fast.
- 28:22[SPEAKER_00]: And it doesn't have to be to a slot receiver.
- 28:25[SPEAKER_00]: It can be to all three of these guys are good with the ball in their hands after the catch.
- 28:29[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, we've seen what Ty Johnson can do.
- 28:32[SPEAKER_00]: We've seen what James Cook can do and I think Ray Davis is just fine doing the same thing.
- 28:36[SPEAKER_00]: So that's going to be interesting to me again.
- 28:38[SPEAKER_00]: I don't care if he wins a rushing title.
- 28:40[SPEAKER_00]: I don't care how many yards he has.
- 28:42[SPEAKER_00]: Just get him to touch this however you can and just let the man you know just get into open field and make plays.
- 28:49[SPEAKER_00]: I don't think we need to touch too much on tight ends.
- 28:52[SPEAKER_00]: I don't want to spend too much time on
- 28:56[SPEAKER_00]: The fourth tight end is we kind of touched on it, but I feel like that's why they didn't keep a fullback.
- 29:02[SPEAKER_00]: Honestly, there's a different philosophy I feel like, because Reggie Gilliam, the bills always said that he was a converted tight end, or he was a tight end slash fullback, and they used him, you know, I think,
- 29:17[SPEAKER_00]: I don't know, 12% of the running plays last year.
- 29:19[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, he was effective and I feel like van Sumer and would have been that guy, but I feel like if you just put a tight end back there, like Jackson Haas in the backfield, line him up in the backfield and block for one of these running backs, I think you'll be fine.
- 29:32[SPEAKER_00]: But I do want to talk about Jackson Haas for one second, and then we can kind of move on because I feel like
- 29:39[SPEAKER_00]: When Dawson knocks, I don't know how many years he's got left.
- 29:42[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, that position is a pretty brutal position because there's a lot involved with blocking and all that stuff.
- 29:49[SPEAKER_00]: And health wise,
- 29:51[SPEAKER_00]: knock on wood, can Caves been shaky, nox has been banged up a little here and there, but health-wise, hopefully they can pull through this year, I see a bigger role for Jackson Haas.
- 30:02[SPEAKER_00]: What's your take on that and then kind of give me what you think of the tight end room overall, if healthy, is it one of the best rooms in the NFL?
- 30:12[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, it probably is, uh, if all things, you know, not like on what all things come their fruition here, I think you're ready to hit on it, I think everyone in the world talks about it, right?
- 30:22[SPEAKER_01]: What is can cake?
- 30:23[SPEAKER_01]: Is it going to hold up this year?
- 30:24[SPEAKER_01]: And I think that's a huge what if because we've seen no indications that it's going to actually happen.
- 30:30[SPEAKER_01]: I think Knox has been really serviceable in the back end.
- 30:34[SPEAKER_01]: Haas, I look at him and I go, okay, you're right.
- 30:37[SPEAKER_01]: We're probably moving on from Knox.
- 30:41[SPEAKER_01]: If not, at the end of this year, probably at the end of next year.
- 30:43[SPEAKER_01]: And having someone in the system, who he trust, he looks really promising.
- 30:48[SPEAKER_01]: He's got hands.
- 30:49[SPEAKER_01]: He's not doing one hand in catches, but the guy's getting in space, and he's pulling the ball down.
- 30:56[SPEAKER_01]: To me, it's a natural error parent for where he's coming in the slot in for Knox got big guys he could block like he could just kind of do it and I think we follow that pecking order right say can Kate is out.
- 31:16[SPEAKER_01]: you know, your backups and your third stringers and your fourth stringer there.
- 31:19[SPEAKER_01]: So I think they're kind of hedging their bets a little bit, keeping four tight ends.
- 31:25[SPEAKER_01]: I like all four of them, but I think they're hedging their bets and saying, I don't know what we're getting here.
- 31:30[SPEAKER_01]: You know, we might have one in the active on game day, but
- 31:33[SPEAKER_01]: we're set up, we're practicing, we're going through reps, we figure out what everyone does well, and we can just slot those people in.
- 31:40[SPEAKER_01]: So I actually like the, I like to tie that in room a lot.
- 31:43[SPEAKER_01]: I think it probably is the best in the NFL.
- 31:47[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, and you know, there's the old, well, it's Dalton, concave.
- 31:52[SPEAKER_00]: going to be healthy for 17 games because he hasn't been yet in three years.
- 31:57[SPEAKER_00]: So we'll see, hopefully, apparently, all the reports are that he's 100% in his rehab and stuff and he's put on muscle mass.
- 32:06[SPEAKER_00]: So I mean, when he's on the field, the offense is just different.
- 32:10[SPEAKER_00]: It's just, it's just different.
- 32:11[SPEAKER_00]: Like you can see
- 32:13[SPEAKER_00]: how much more I feel comfortable Josh is looking down field.
- 32:18[SPEAKER_00]: And he uses concave down field.
- 32:20[SPEAKER_00]: And I feel like having him is just it's just like having that like what we talked about earlier, having that extra receiver.
- 32:29[SPEAKER_00]: Because I honestly don't care if Donald concave can block or not.
- 32:32[SPEAKER_00]: He was drafted in the first round to be a past catcher and to make plays down field.
- 32:36[SPEAKER_00]: And that's what he does.
- 32:37[SPEAKER_00]: So we'll have to
- 32:40[SPEAKER_00]: If he's healthy, how that affects the target share like we talked about earlier with, you know, the third, fourth, fifth receivers, how that affects all that target share.
- 32:52[SPEAKER_01]: You know, and probably different conversation for a different day, but healthy versus playing, right?
- 32:57[SPEAKER_01]: Everyone's going to get banged up to, yeah, I've got had bumps and bruises and swollen knees at some point throughout the season.
- 33:02[SPEAKER_01]: So this is not a knock.
- 33:03[SPEAKER_01]: I can kid by any stretch of the imagination, but we saw a last year, right?
- 33:06[SPEAKER_01]: There were games he played, and he was noticeably slower, and he was noticeably not being able to make cuts like he could.
- 33:14[SPEAKER_01]: Like, there's no doubt he's here in the noise.
- 33:16[SPEAKER_01]: Oh, guy can't stay healthy.
- 33:18[SPEAKER_01]: I want to go out there and prove myself.
- 33:19[SPEAKER_01]: He likes catching the ball, which is great.
- 33:21[SPEAKER_01]: But what if he's banged up?
- 33:23[SPEAKER_01]: And he can't do that again, but he still plays, right?
- 33:25[SPEAKER_01]: And then you're kind of hamstringing the offense a little bit there.
- 33:29[SPEAKER_01]: And I think defense is a catch that catch-on pretty soon.
- 33:32[SPEAKER_01]: So I think that's the one thing where I'm kind of concerned if when he gets banged up, like all NFL players do,
- 33:40[SPEAKER_01]: is he going to try to play through something because he knows the pressure is on and is that going to negatively impact the the offensive structure there and that's probably the biggest concern I have with him outside of just missing the season you know based on some injury yeah and I think that's why a lot of fans were they were kind of torn on well he's going to play he just rehabbed
- 34:05[SPEAKER_00]: And he didn't have the surgery.
- 34:06[SPEAKER_00]: The surgery would have put him out for the year, right?
- 34:09[SPEAKER_00]: The surgery is a nine to 10 months recovery ish.
- 34:12[SPEAKER_00]: And he would have been out for, or he would have missed the bulk of the season.
- 34:16[SPEAKER_00]: So hopefully, you know,
- 34:20[SPEAKER_00]: the routes are crisp and the throws from Josh are good and he's not diving all over the place and he can stay healthy because I think when he's out there it's just the offense is just different.
- 34:30[SPEAKER_01]: So so you could tell by looking at me I'm not an NFL player for the fact that here but I've had enough of these you know rehabs over surgeries, I've had enough surgeries on my knees and stuff too but
- 34:43[SPEAKER_01]: Um, like I've gone through that process of, hey, it's avoid the surgery.
- 34:48[SPEAKER_01]: Let's do the rehab.
- 34:49[SPEAKER_01]: It's going to be 60 months and I'm an aggressive guy.
- 34:53[SPEAKER_01]: I always want to like softball certain up.
- 34:55[SPEAKER_01]: I'm going softball.
- 34:56[SPEAKER_01]: I want to work out every day, right?
- 34:58[SPEAKER_01]: So I've pushed myself and I've wound up resetting myself and like, all right, I got to deal with this four months now and I got to go back to that 60 month window.
- 35:06[SPEAKER_01]: I'm not putting the stresses on my body that these NFL players are, and that is, I always prefer reabbing over surgeries just in general as a philosophy, but that's, I hear that, I'm like, okay, I'm concerned because I've come and gone through that road.
- 35:22[SPEAKER_01]: I know what it feels like.
- 35:24[SPEAKER_01]: And there's no way, I mean, he's getting the best treatment he possibly can, right?
- 35:27[SPEAKER_01]: He's got all the, the tools available to them.
- 35:30[SPEAKER_01]: But,
- 35:31[SPEAKER_01]: It's concerning because one missed step, right, one push it to hard this day and you're kind of always going back or one step forward two steps back and We'll see once the rigors of the actual season can go in if that's going to come back to bite them.
- 35:47[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, I mean, fortunate for him and ages on his side, right?
- 35:50[SPEAKER_00]: He's still young.
- 35:51[SPEAKER_00]: He's still young.
- 35:52[SPEAKER_00]: So I had knee surgery two years ago in October of two years ago.
- 35:58[SPEAKER_00]: And before then, like the two or three years leading up to it, like I was constant pain and I was going to physical therapy and I was doing all the stuff I was supposed to do.
- 36:06[SPEAKER_00]: And then it just came to a point where I looked at my doctor and I'm like, bro, just fix this.
- 36:11[SPEAKER_00]: Like, I can't be doing this anymore.
- 36:16[SPEAKER_00]: wanting to not have like the ultimate of like, okay, they're going to cut me open and I'm going to be out for a long time and then I'm going to have to recover from that or I could just kind of deal with some minor pain here and there and kind of but we're talking like you said we're talking about NFL players who are getting hit.
- 36:33[SPEAKER_00]: And it's not like, it's a secret that he has issues in defensive players.
- 36:38[SPEAKER_00]: No, that he has issues and I'm not saying anyone's going to take anybody out, but, you know, anyways, all right, let's, let's talk about defense.
- 36:47[SPEAKER_00]: Let's talk about the defensive line, because
- 36:52[SPEAKER_00]: They kept five defensive, six defensive tackles, and five of them, I think we already all knew they were gonna keep.
- 36:59[SPEAKER_00]: That's that I'll ever land in Jackson, Dion Walker, Greg Gaines and T.D.
- 37:03[SPEAKER_00]: Sanders.
- 37:05[SPEAKER_00]: Duane Carter to me is interesting.
- 37:10[SPEAKER_00]: Now I know he's a third round pick.
- 37:12[SPEAKER_00]: He came over in the, he was the third round pick we got from Kansas City when then,
- 37:19[SPEAKER_00]: The bills didn't draft Xavier worthy.
- 37:20[SPEAKER_00]: They traded, you got trade back and got Kian Coleman.
- 37:24[SPEAKER_00]: And then they asked him this year to gain weight and become a nose tackle.
- 37:31[SPEAKER_00]: I fully think that he was a hundred percent a Sean McDermott draft pick for Sean McDermott's defense to be a guy to play and replace snaps for Ed Oliver when he came out in the rotation for McDermott.
- 37:44[SPEAKER_00]: You know how McDermott had all the rotation stuff going out?
- 37:50[SPEAKER_00]: We're going to say this about a lot of these guys, but a lot of these guys have been asked to do things that maybe they weren't drafted to do.
- 37:58[SPEAKER_00]: Because of the new scheme and stuff like that, but what's your thoughts on doing Carter because obviously.
- 38:04[SPEAKER_00]: Andrew just risk this first year and then he had the ACL last year.
- 38:10[SPEAKER_00]: And he's coming off of that, now he's adding weight to his frame.
- 38:14[SPEAKER_00]: Not saying his frame can't hold it.
- 38:16[SPEAKER_00]: But now he's made the initial roster.
- 38:19[SPEAKER_00]: We'll see if he stays.
- 38:21[SPEAKER_00]: But I think I didn't even have a make in the bill's practice squad when I did my initial 50 years.
- 38:27[SPEAKER_00]: Really?
- 38:28[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, I just thought that it is a great guy.
- 38:31[SPEAKER_00]: Like I've met, I've met him.
- 38:33[SPEAKER_00]: I know some other people from built in Buffalo have talked to him personally.
- 38:40[SPEAKER_00]: But like what what's your thoughts on is is this something that is salvageable to be a nose tackle behind Greg gains because I think Greg gains is going to be that that nose tackle that's just going to be the guy that's going to be the bit beef eater out there that's just going to take up all the blocks.
- 38:55[SPEAKER_00]: What's your thoughts?
- 38:57[SPEAKER_01]: I'll be honest with you.
- 38:57[SPEAKER_01]: I have no idea what to make of this guy.
- 39:00[SPEAKER_01]: I look at him.
- 39:03[SPEAKER_01]: watch them like you watch tape of them and I'm like this guy can play like he's a fit.
- 39:08[SPEAKER_01]: I have no idea what the make of him though like you said he has been hurt.
- 39:13[SPEAKER_01]: Even when he's playing he's been hurt and I don't know if he was a fit for the last defense.
- 39:20[SPEAKER_01]: I think this is probably less of a conversation about to weigh in Carter more of a conversation about like what this defense of line as a whole looks like because
- 39:28[SPEAKER_01]: I am extremely underwhelmed with pastries, all of this defense of line between at the time, I hated the Rousseau signing, it's fine now, you compare salaries and what you're getting out of them, it's fine, but it's too inconsistent.
- 39:45[SPEAKER_01]: I pretty much, if I just walked on a lot, I'm going like inconsistent, inconsistent, game breaker, inconsistent, inconsistent.
- 39:53[SPEAKER_01]: I was shocked that you said you didn't even have them in the practice while because I look at him.
- 39:57[SPEAKER_01]: I'm like, okay, we got to give them full year.
- 40:00[SPEAKER_01]: Let's see if his body frame can take it.
- 40:01[SPEAKER_01]: Let's see if he can play and let's see if we got something here because I don't think my guess is the defense of people walk in and they're like, I don't know why I got with this guy.
- 40:09[SPEAKER_01]: You know what I got with this guy?
- 40:11[SPEAKER_01]: You can ask, you know, I don't know anyone.
- 40:13[SPEAKER_01]: I don't know what I got with this guy.
- 40:14[SPEAKER_01]: So,
- 40:16[SPEAKER_01]: This might be the one where I'm super interested to watch what he does this year, situational when he's in there, when he's not in there and see how we respond to that stuff.
- 40:25[SPEAKER_01]: Because this is probably to me the biggest question mark on the entire defense of Lyme.
- 40:30[SPEAKER_01]: It's like what do I got here?
- 40:32[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, it's just I was concerned for him because in the final preseason game, he was playing on the last series in the final preseason game.
- 40:41[SPEAKER_00]: He was playing out there in the fourth quarter.
- 40:46[SPEAKER_00]: I just, I don't know, like, I watched what TJ Sanders did during camp preseason and then he didn't even play the last game.
- 40:55[SPEAKER_00]: So what does that tell you?
- 40:57[SPEAKER_00]: That tell, that tells me that he's probably starting.
- 41:02[SPEAKER_00]: because they want to keep him healthy.
- 41:04[SPEAKER_00]: They, he doesn't need to show them anything else.
- 41:07[SPEAKER_00]: So I don't know.
- 41:08[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, I like the Greg Gaines signing.
- 41:10[SPEAKER_00]: I feel like this was a guy in reports I've come out that the bills are on contact with him back when free agency opened.
- 41:19[SPEAKER_00]: And I feel like a guy who's a veteran who's played over 100 games in the league was talking to Brandon Bean and the bills, whoever, and saying,
- 41:32[SPEAKER_00]: doesn't have to go sit in a dorm room, he doesn't have to go through preseason, he doesn't have to go through training camp, all that stuff.
- 41:39[SPEAKER_00]: And then he just rolls out a bed and plays nose tackle because he's the type of guy I think that no matter what system you have, if it's a 344, 343, whatever, hybrid, you want to throw out there.
- 41:50[SPEAKER_00]: He's a true nose tackle.
- 41:51[SPEAKER_00]: He's going to be fine.
- 41:53[SPEAKER_00]: And what I saw from him in preseason in the short amount of time that he played, I think he looked good.
- 41:58[SPEAKER_00]: And I think that he
- 42:02[SPEAKER_00]: Deon Walker to do other stuff.
- 42:05[SPEAKER_00]: Deon Walker doesn't have to feel forced into that nose tackle role, just because of his frame size, right?
- 42:12[SPEAKER_00]: We know Deon Walker can do other things that we want Deon Walker to do other things and leverage his size to do other things.
- 42:19[SPEAKER_00]: All in all, I think, you know, land and jackson looked pretty good.
- 42:23[SPEAKER_00]: I thought in the few reps that he got in preseason, I thought he looked good.
- 42:28[SPEAKER_00]: He's a big boy.
- 42:28[SPEAKER_00]: He's gained a lot of weight.
- 42:29[SPEAKER_00]: So hopefully he can maintain that and his frame can hold up and he can continue just to grow his strength.
- 42:36[SPEAKER_00]: Obviously, some of these guys like, like, we talked about the wine Carter and TJ Sanders and land and jackson.
- 42:42[SPEAKER_00]: Obviously, these guys,
- 42:44[SPEAKER_00]: they need to grow into an NFL body, right?
- 42:47[SPEAKER_00]: They're still, they're still younger.
- 42:49[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, they're both, they're all drafted within the last two draft cycles.
- 42:53[SPEAKER_00]: So three cycles if you count doing Carter.
- 42:56[SPEAKER_00]: So it's gonna be interesting to see.
- 42:57[SPEAKER_00]: And again, we have no idea.
- 43:00[SPEAKER_00]: what the nose tackle is going to be asked to do and then the defensive tackle's other than at Oliver, right?
- 43:06[SPEAKER_00]: You know, how many guys are they going to deploy out there because I feel like if you're just going to let at Oliver just run free out there, like that's an extra, like, I don't want to say edge defender, but he's another pass rusher.
- 43:19[SPEAKER_00]: So it's going to be interesting in how they deploy all these guys because then if you look at the outside linebacker slash edge defenders,
- 43:28[SPEAKER_00]: I was only surprised by Mike Dana.
- 43:30[SPEAKER_00]: Now Mike Dana's been on NFL roster.
- 43:32[SPEAKER_00]: He's played, he started for the chiefs.
- 43:34[SPEAKER_00]: Like he's played games.
- 43:37[SPEAKER_00]: And I'm not concerned with any of the other guys that got Bradley Chub, Greg Russo, Mike Dana, like I said, Michael Hoyt, Javansalman and you know, TJ Parker.
- 43:45[SPEAKER_00]: So I think you have a nice mix of,
- 43:50[SPEAKER_00]: Bradley Chubbing Greg and Greg Russo are obviously going to get the lion's share of the past rushing downs.
- 43:57[SPEAKER_00]: But I like what I saw from Solomon.
- 43:59[SPEAKER_00]: A lot of people don't think he's a fit.
- 44:02[SPEAKER_00]: I don't think he was a fit for Sean McDermott's defense.
- 44:04[SPEAKER_00]: I think he is a better fit for this defense.
- 44:08[SPEAKER_00]: And I think they kept six because they're concerned.
- 44:11[SPEAKER_00]: with where is Michael Hoyt actually going to be Michael Hoyt?
- 44:16[SPEAKER_00]: Is it going to be week one or week 12?
- 44:18[SPEAKER_00]: You know what I mean?
- 44:19[SPEAKER_00]: Because the guy needs to just, they need to keep him away from himself if that makes sense.
- 44:25[SPEAKER_00]: Like there was times in the week three preseason where they had to take his helmet because he wanted to go back in and they're like, no dude, like your snaps are over.
- 44:32[SPEAKER_00]: Like your snap counts done, like we don't need you to go in anymore.
- 44:35[SPEAKER_00]: We don't want you to get injured or do whatever.
- 44:37[SPEAKER_00]: So what's your thoughts on?
- 44:39[SPEAKER_00]: I guess the defensive line overall and then if you want to talk about the outside line backers in this scheme slash edge defenders, like what's what's your thoughts?
- 44:48[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, you know what what I find really interesting is we again, not something like a broken record, but like we don't know what we're getting out of this defense whatsoever, but if I go down and I'm looking the roster and I go down between you know,
- 45:02[SPEAKER_01]: to encarter.
- 45:05[SPEAKER_01]: We rotate people like this in, great games, you know, Michael Hoyt, right?
- 45:09[SPEAKER_01]: We start rotating these people in and I start looking at that and go, well, when Fideri amathas comes back from suspension, you know, week three, I like the depth and I like, you know, guy needs a breather or whatever types of rotation they're doing.
- 45:23[SPEAKER_01]: I think we've got
- 45:25[SPEAKER_01]: You're not going from like a number one down to like a four, right?
- 45:30[SPEAKER_01]: If some dudes are just scraping off the practice squad, the throw in there, just fill it down here and there.
- 45:35[SPEAKER_01]: I think we've got very capable backups and even third stringers that can play roles for this team.
- 45:42[SPEAKER_01]: So overall, I look at them like, okay, I think there's a lot of inconsistency that I've seen the last couple of years from Oliver from Russo.
- 45:49[SPEAKER_01]: But...
- 45:50[SPEAKER_01]: Hopefully, those guys get turned loose a little bit, they play a little more with the scheme that fits their skill set, but I really like the depth that I'm walking into it with and and I'm actually while I have no idea what I'm getting from doing Carter, I'm actually high on him, I have a lot of promise for him, so I think he can be a really good fit.
- 46:08[SPEAKER_01]: I'm hoping that comes out the.
- 46:10[SPEAKER_01]: comes a fruition here.
- 46:11[SPEAKER_01]: So I like it overall.
- 46:14[SPEAKER_01]: I really this year, right?
- 46:16[SPEAKER_01]: I will complain about it for much every week, but I'm like, the Greg Russo played today, right?
- 46:21[SPEAKER_01]: And the next week, the gadget below is he blows up half the plays on there in a Macart.
- 46:25[SPEAKER_01]: Here's Greg Russo in the next week, he just disappears again.
- 46:27[SPEAKER_01]: Think at Oliver, really good player also relatively inconsistent, you know, a term piece of the periods of season.
- 46:35[SPEAKER_01]: So,
- 46:36[SPEAKER_01]: Those are the two I want to see more instances of yada because they obviously have tons of skill.
- 46:42[SPEAKER_01]: I like their game when they are on, but they just tend to disappear and I'm hoping that's more of a defensive scheme more than, you know, being able to just be
- 46:53[SPEAKER_01]: only taking advantage of certain players and then other players just kind of completely blocked them out.
- 46:57[SPEAKER_01]: But my gut tells me it's half scheme.
- 47:01[SPEAKER_01]: So those are the two things I'm looking at.
- 47:03[SPEAKER_01]: I'll open the result.
- 47:04[SPEAKER_01]: Can we be more consistent, right?
- 47:05[SPEAKER_01]: And I think they will.
- 47:06[SPEAKER_01]: Just I have a lot of faith in the scheme.
- 47:08[SPEAKER_01]: I don't think it's going to be to, you know, stand out defenses here.
- 47:11[SPEAKER_01]: There's a lot of learning curve, a lot of new pieces, a lot of role fitting.
- 47:15[SPEAKER_01]: But overall, I kind of like the position they're in.
- 47:17[SPEAKER_01]: I've got high hopes for it.
- 47:20[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, I think, and I've said this before, I feel a little bit more comfortable about the fact that the past rush is going to play more free, if that makes any sense, I feel like in the Sean McDermott defense, it was.
- 47:39[SPEAKER_00]: there wasn't designed past rush.
- 47:42[SPEAKER_00]: It was just kind of if we get there we get there.
- 47:46[SPEAKER_00]: You know what I mean like there was times you can tell when they made it concerted effort to blitz when it was you need to because you need a stop in games that either they were trying to come from behind or it was a close game or it was within
- 48:05[SPEAKER_00]: would take over play calling, sometimes in the second half, where, oh, wow, they're blitzing, where has this been, right?
- 48:12[SPEAKER_00]: And I think with this group of guys that they have up front, I'm excited to see what I'll ever can do playing in a different type of role.
- 48:22[SPEAKER_00]: He's still a three tech, but he's going to play a little bit more free.
- 48:26[SPEAKER_00]: I'm excited to see, because I've been highly critical of regular so like I, okay, you
- 48:34[SPEAKER_00]: You haven't had a sack.
- 48:35[SPEAKER_00]: It's now week seven.
- 48:36[SPEAKER_00]: Like can we?
- 48:37[SPEAKER_00]: And I understand his his run Defensibility because of his wingspan and he's good there.
- 48:43[SPEAKER_00]: I get that.
- 48:44[SPEAKER_00]: But
- 48:45[SPEAKER_00]: I feel like having Bradley Chub on the other side is going to help.
- 48:49[SPEAKER_00]: I feel like having a galic Michael Hoyt one healthy is going to help Greg Russo.
- 48:53[SPEAKER_00]: I feel like Ad Oliver's going to be a menace.
- 48:56[SPEAKER_00]: And I feel like you have the guys like the Greg Gaines and the London Jackson's and the D.N.
- 49:02[SPEAKER_00]: Walker's that are going to help you in those rush lanes that are going to help clog that stuff up.
- 49:10[SPEAKER_00]: So our linebackers can play clean.
- 49:12[SPEAKER_00]: They're not trying to
- 49:14[SPEAKER_00]: tackle a running back and they're already covered up by two guys because we can't we we have nobody up front that's blocking and these guys are just not able to make tackles and I feel like and that kind of leads into the linebacker conversation.
- 49:29[SPEAKER_00]: I'm concerned a little bit about linebackers, but again, this is the the whole
- 49:37[SPEAKER_00]: story of the unknown, right?
- 49:38[SPEAKER_00]: We don't know if Terrell Bernard is going to go back to being Terrell Bernard from 2023 when he had 140 tackles and six acts and three interceptions.
- 49:48[SPEAKER_00]: Dorian Williams was injured in the spring and part of the summer.
- 49:54[SPEAKER_00]: Caleb E. Larms O'er looks fantastic, but he's a rookie, so there's going to be a learning curve there, and then you have
- 50:05[SPEAKER_00]: for special teams, and then in case somebody gets injured, he can play both positions on that lineback or he can play inside and outside.
- 50:12[SPEAKER_00]: So again, a lot of what it is, right?
- 50:14[SPEAKER_00]: So what you've thought said in the linebackers, because we'll talk about the practice squad in a bit, because the bills did set in Shack Thompson to the practice squad and Kiana to Jenkins, which I think will, those guys will absolutely be elevated more than multiple times.
- 50:28[SPEAKER_00]: So what you've thought said in the linebacker group, they're only keeping four, two, which I think is kind of like,
- 50:34[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, this is probably the biggest, I don't know.
- 50:38[SPEAKER_01]: We haven't talked about coronary yet, but this is probably the biggest weakness in the defense.
- 50:42[SPEAKER_01]: At least going in, right, perceived weakness.
- 50:44[SPEAKER_01]: They could be one of being a strength for them.
- 50:47[SPEAKER_01]: This is gonna come down the defense of line for my huge part for me.
- 50:50[SPEAKER_01]: If I give more chances to see out of her so out of Oliver, and they can kind of clog that up a little bit and they're not having like you said, they're not those linebackers are gonna bury by two guys because you're lying that into anything.
- 51:05[SPEAKER_00]: Let's assume.
- 51:08[SPEAKER_01]: Let's assume Elam's ore can play, right?
- 51:11[SPEAKER_01]: Dorian Williams, let's assume he can continue to progress into, I mean, he's been here for a couple of years, but progress into a better player as well, work in system player.
- 51:23[SPEAKER_01]: Like, I don't know what I'm getting.
- 51:25[SPEAKER_01]: I'm not a big fan of Joanne Dries in, special teams, great.
- 51:29[SPEAKER_01]: Like, I watched a guy play when he said the fill in the regular season, he doesn't look like an NFL lineback or to me, looks fine in the preseason.
- 51:38[SPEAKER_01]: Obviously, we'll talk about practice squad, but Shack Thompson, some of you that's your natural fit there, kind of filling in for where Joe would play.
- 51:47[SPEAKER_01]: So I don't know, and is Bernardo, like you said, is he gonna be back?
- 51:51[SPEAKER_01]: Is he gonna be at the guide that we saw a couple of years ago and last year, which again, we've talked about injuries, but got it, was everyone hurt last year?
- 51:59[SPEAKER_01]: Like, what are we doing here?
- 52:00[SPEAKER_01]: So,
- 52:02[SPEAKER_01]: You know, I have confidence that Bernardo is a good or very good line-backer in the NFL, so I'm not really concerned about him.
- 52:12[SPEAKER_01]: The Williams-Elam's or I think even if Williams runs the first few weeks primarily, I think he eventually, that's probably, unless he has a stand-out season, I think the natural goal is to get Elam's or comfortable with the speed of regular season,
- 52:31[SPEAKER_01]: that is now your number two and then you've got to keep it back up or you know other fill in for Dorian Williams and check Thompson like the guys just you know it might not be urshattering your standouts here but the guy like he's
- 52:47[SPEAKER_01]: you know what he's going to do right and the guys usually in the right place at the right time you might miss a taglier in there but like he's fairly consistent you know what your plug it in there so I think what we're seeing right now to where we end the season I think we're going to have a little bit of a shake up at that position but you know this is probably the biggest I don't know about any positional group on the team yeah it's only keeping for I was I thought
- 53:14[SPEAKER_00]: I thought they'd keep five.
- 53:16[SPEAKER_00]: I thought that Kianta Jenkins would be on the roster because I know how much Brandon Bean loves Joe and Dreson.
- 53:24[SPEAKER_00]: And I know how much Joe Brady has talked about Joe and Dreson.
- 53:28[SPEAKER_00]: They talked about him months and months and months ago about the work that he's putting in and stuff like that.
- 53:34[SPEAKER_00]: That's fine.
- 53:35[SPEAKER_00]: Because I mentioned it earlier, like they got to figure out
- 53:40[SPEAKER_00]: how they want to field a, uh, special teams, right?
- 53:44[SPEAKER_00]: And that always comes into play with like the last three or four spots.
- 53:50[SPEAKER_00]: And Brandon Bean was asked before the last preseason game, like how many spots do you think are already locked up?
- 53:57[SPEAKER_00]: And he said 50.
- 53:59[SPEAKER_00]: So that means like,
- 54:02[SPEAKER_00]: we're looking at Trent Scherfield versus Joe and Jason to make the roster because of special teams, right?
- 54:08[SPEAKER_00]: They went with Joe and Joe and Jason because they wanted that forthbacker.
- 54:12[SPEAKER_00]: So I don't know.
- 54:13[SPEAKER_00]: It's it's just interesting.
- 54:14[SPEAKER_00]: I thought they would keep one less db and one more linebacker.
- 54:19[SPEAKER_00]: Um, just for flexibility there, just in case for game day, but maybe they knew that Shack Thompson was going to sign to the practice squad when they, when they made all these cuts.
- 54:29[SPEAKER_00]: So because I can't, I don't anticipate Shack Thompson.
- 54:34[SPEAKER_00]: Now, he hasn't been on a roster all summer.
- 54:37[SPEAKER_00]: So I can't.
- 54:39[SPEAKER_00]: I can't think that in the next two weeks, they can't get him up to speed in this defense.
- 54:43[SPEAKER_00]: And Shaq Thompson, I feel like can fit in a 3, 4, or 4, 3, and no matter what Jim Leonard's 3, 4 doesn't look like Sean McDermott's 4, 3 or whatever.
- 54:54[SPEAKER_00]: I feel like he can fit in and play either back or position and he'll be just fine.
- 54:59[SPEAKER_00]: On top of the fact, like you said,
- 55:01[SPEAKER_00]: You put him in there and you already know what your floor is, you know what the floor is because what he gave you last year even at his worst was serviceable extremely serviceable and if you're depending on your defensive line to be better than it was last year.
- 55:17[SPEAKER_00]: your linebackers are going to play a lot more clean and they're going to be able to do a lot more things.
- 55:22[SPEAKER_00]: So I feel like we're going to see more splash type plays from the linebackers because like I said with the defensive line, they're going to be able to play more clean.
- 55:29[SPEAKER_00]: They're going to be able to play free.
- 55:31[SPEAKER_00]: They're going to be able to roam around and just chase down ball carriers.
- 55:33[SPEAKER_00]: And that's what the linebackers should be doing.
- 55:35[SPEAKER_00]: They shouldn't be getting washed in the sauce, trying to get through a line because your just the defensive lines
- 55:45[SPEAKER_00]: gashing holes everywhere and they're covered up and they can't make tackles.
- 55:48[SPEAKER_00]: So it's going to be nice to see.
- 55:50[SPEAKER_00]: And I do think with Bernardo's an athletic freak.
- 55:53[SPEAKER_00]: I feel like Dorian Williams.
- 55:55[SPEAKER_00]: Everybody has said is is the most athletic player on the roster.
- 55:58[SPEAKER_00]: And we all know Caleb Ealarm's or I think that how he.
- 56:03[SPEAKER_00]: How he made it to the fifth round, I have absolutely no idea, but that's a guy that he's absolutely going to be a starter with the bills, it's just a matter of time, once he gets the mental aspect of it, all right, so.
- 56:18[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, and it'll be interesting to see how long that takes to because Dorian Williams, right?
- 56:22[SPEAKER_01]: That was the thing.
- 56:22[SPEAKER_01]: Right.
- 56:23[SPEAKER_01]: You could kind of see that.
- 56:24[SPEAKER_01]: It took him a while to kind of get up to speed on, you know, seeing where the holes are.
- 56:28[SPEAKER_01]: The lanes you can go into heckle the running, the runner, but kind of seem to take a step back last year or so, at least to me.
- 56:36[SPEAKER_01]: So, you know, how quickly
- 56:39[SPEAKER_01]: can Caleb get up to speed on that and will it, you know, regress a little bit, you know, once he starts doing it, right, different run schemes and things like that.
- 56:47[SPEAKER_01]: So that's kind of the biggest thing that watch out, but hopefully, Dorian Williams can kind of pick up, you know, and kind of get over where he was last year.
- 56:57[SPEAKER_01]: I thought he was pretty inconsistent last year.
- 56:59[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, it's funny too, because Dorian Williams for it, he's,
- 57:03[SPEAKER_00]: he's just athletically gifted but I feel like he tries he's going too fast and I think there's times when you can tell he over
- 57:13[SPEAKER_00]: He overthinks something.
- 57:14[SPEAKER_00]: And now again, that could be part of the McDermott defense, where you're asked as a linebacker to do like 15 things, right?
- 57:21[SPEAKER_00]: And I'm not saying that's a bad thing.
- 57:23[SPEAKER_00]: I'm not saying it at all because Sean McDermott has produced some incredible linebackers throughout his defensive history.
- 57:31[SPEAKER_00]: But I think you see with Caleb E alarm's or that sometimes he's playing too fast, and that's when he makes mistakes.
- 57:37[SPEAKER_00]: So hopefully,
- 57:39[SPEAKER_00]: Dorian Williams, this will free him up to slow down a little bit and with this new defensive scheme that way, he doesn't have to overanalyze everything because I think like the mental aspect of how he plays, sometimes he gets overloaded and you could tell when he takes bad angles or he's reading the play wrong or something like that.
- 57:58[SPEAKER_00]: But then there's times when you're like holy cow, look at that play from Dorian Williams.
- 58:01[SPEAKER_00]: So hopefully we get more of the latter.
- 58:09[SPEAKER_00]: Have you any concern here?
- 58:12[SPEAKER_00]: I'm not going to talk about tomorrow, Hamling.
- 58:15[SPEAKER_00]: I just don't have the energy for it.
- 58:19[SPEAKER_00]: I just, I thought that he was a Sean McDermott safety.
- 58:23[SPEAKER_00]: I honestly did.
- 58:25[SPEAKER_00]: I thought that,
- 58:26[SPEAKER_00]: and high did a nice job of grooming him to be if they needed a guy who could play in the NFL.
- 58:34[SPEAKER_00]: And he played when Micahe had that neck injury.
- 58:37[SPEAKER_00]: He played, I think, 15 games.
- 58:40[SPEAKER_00]: And it was serviceable.
- 58:41[SPEAKER_00]: Now, he had your employer next to him.
- 58:42[SPEAKER_00]: So, you know, that always helps.
- 58:44[SPEAKER_00]: We saw what your employer did for, for Cole Bishop last year and his, his growth.
- 58:49[SPEAKER_00]: So anything stand out to you on the bill's DBs, obviously they kept Sam Franklin, that's a, that's a straight practice squad guy.
- 58:56[SPEAKER_00]: I think Jalen Gilgourr is nice to have as a guy that you want to develop because who knows what's going to happen with CJ Gardner Johnson down the road.
- 59:06[SPEAKER_00]: I don't know if he's going to get a contract after this year.
- 59:09[SPEAKER_00]: Hopefully he plays well Jordan Hancock.
- 59:13[SPEAKER_00]: I like where the development's been with him.
- 59:16[SPEAKER_00]: It's nice to see that he went to a new system, and it actually seems like it benefited his play style more.
- 59:24[SPEAKER_00]: Not saying he would have been bad in McDermott's system, but I feel like
- 59:28[SPEAKER_00]: something was unlocked like the next level, you know what I mean like he's leveling up with with the Jim Leonard defense obviously got Christian Benford, D. Alford, Davis and Ignos and I've seen a lot of people talking about how they think the bills are light on you know outside corners.
- 59:47[SPEAKER_00]: I don't
- 59:48[SPEAKER_00]: I don't particularly see that because I know that DL for can do that if they need him to do that and then you could have Jordan Hancock play in the slot.
- 59:56[SPEAKER_00]: What's your thoughts on the DB room like overall?
- 1:00:01[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, so let's start with, say if the mic would have talked about Hamlin, I wouldn't, well, I will.
- 1:00:05[SPEAKER_01]: I would not be surprised to see him as a healthy scratch, you know, on a lot of these games, especially in the second half of the year, right?
- 1:00:14[SPEAKER_01]: So it doesn't make the roster on those.
- 1:00:19[SPEAKER_01]: barring injury, my concern with Cole Bishop, love him, phenomenal player, watching his development from, you know, year over year unbelievable.
- 1:00:30[SPEAKER_01]: I'm just waiting for him to get hurt.
- 1:00:31[SPEAKER_01]: He flies like a missile out there.
- 1:00:35[SPEAKER_00]: Don't say that.
- 1:00:36[SPEAKER_01]: Don't say that a couple times last year you could totally get stunned like he just smacks in guys and he was full speed at him and I'm just kind of waiting for that to happen.
- 1:00:44[SPEAKER_01]: So I think we're probably going to see Not kind of would at least for a series or two at some point this year, but I wouldn't be surprised if he misses a game or two with some sort of injury because the guy is just fast And he hits but he's such damn good player Gardner Johnson.
- 1:01:00[SPEAKER_01]: I'm excited for what I'm glad they brought in the guy with some juice
- 1:01:03[SPEAKER_01]: Um, I hopefully it's not too much use, but like when he's out there, the guy can play a little bit.
- 1:01:09[SPEAKER_01]: So I like him.
- 1:01:10[SPEAKER_01]: I like, you know, his testing nature to it as far as straight corners go.
- 1:01:17[SPEAKER_01]: I don't know, I think of the defensive line and Leonard scheme puts pressure on the quarterback.
- 1:01:24[SPEAKER_01]: I don't think you're leaving guys out there to hang for, you know, five, seven seconds where they need to cover that all time.
- 1:01:29[SPEAKER_01]: I think they'll probably be fine.
- 1:01:31[SPEAKER_01]: They're going to give up some plays, you know, Harrison hurt a lot.
- 1:01:36[SPEAKER_01]: So guys got some speed, but he's probably going to get burnt a couple times.
- 1:01:39[SPEAKER_01]: IGB hopefully he progresses.
- 1:01:42[SPEAKER_01]: Like, I like the raw tail on there.
- 1:01:44[SPEAKER_01]: I don't know when I'm getting from him.
- 1:01:46[SPEAKER_01]: I'm okay with it as is and if they start getting torched we can revisit this but right now I think I'm okay
- 1:01:53[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, I think we have to prepare ourselves for the bills are going to have a few, there's going to be times throughout the season when they're going to get beat deep.
- 1:02:03[SPEAKER_00]: It's just, it's not Ben, but don't break anymore.
- 1:02:06[SPEAKER_00]: There's going to be times, and it's going to, because we're not used to it because of the safety production that the bills have had.
- 1:02:14[SPEAKER_00]: Even last year with, with poiter coming back, he was extremely serviceable, but then we had for a long time we had
- 1:02:20[SPEAKER_00]: Mike, a hide and drawn pour your back there and we'd never had to worry no pun intended to safety blanket right they never.
- 1:02:26[SPEAKER_00]: And that's why we always would talk about the Ben but don't break because they'll let you have the underneath stuff they'll let you have the sprinkle here and there stuff but they're not going to let you beat them over the top.
- 1:02:38[SPEAKER_00]: I think with the aggressive nature of CJ Gardner Johnson,
- 1:02:42[SPEAKER_00]: If anybody's ever watched him play and no matter what team he was on, he's aggressive, he's going to go after the ball.
- 1:02:50[SPEAKER_00]: He just is.
- 1:02:51[SPEAKER_00]: And he's going to put himself at times in position to get beat.
- 1:02:54[SPEAKER_00]: That's just, that's how he plays.
- 1:02:56[SPEAKER_00]: But he's also going to make up for it with making some big splash plays that you're going to be like, holy cow, we needed that.
- 1:03:01[SPEAKER_00]: He's going to get turnovers.
- 1:03:03[SPEAKER_00]: And I think with the corners that we have, Benford,
- 1:03:08[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, Benford has been for it.
- 1:03:10[SPEAKER_00]: He's just the solid, he's just that solid corner that he's not going to get picked on.
- 1:03:15[SPEAKER_00]: He's not going to give up big plays.
- 1:03:17[SPEAKER_00]: He's going to allow some receptions.
- 1:03:19[SPEAKER_00]: But he's not going to, he's just not going to give up with Harrison.
- 1:03:24[SPEAKER_00]: I feel like what you said, the inexperience.
- 1:03:26[SPEAKER_00]: And sometimes with him trying to just think that he can always make up for ground because of his speed and his size concerns me a little bit the tackling aspect of it kind of concerns me a little bit I feel like we have to get ready there's going to be some big plays that are going to be given up this year not saying it's going to happen a lot but it's going to happen there's going to be times when the past first can't get home and
- 1:03:49[SPEAKER_00]: it happens, but I feel like there's going to be more defensive splash plays because of the style of defense that the bills are going to play where they're going to be tackles for loss on run plays.
- 1:04:00[SPEAKER_00]: There's going to be big sacks.
- 1:04:02[SPEAKER_00]: There's going to be turnovers in the second day.
- 1:04:04[SPEAKER_00]: I feel like we're we're going to get a lot more aggressive, at least from what I've been able to piece together for the last six months.
- 1:04:11[SPEAKER_00]: We're going to get more of an aggressive style of
- 1:04:15[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, you know, if I look at the position on groups like a few minutes ago, I mentioned like drop off between the defensive line right when you're rotating those people in.
- 1:04:24[SPEAKER_01]: I'm like, hey, I like the depth here.
- 1:04:25[SPEAKER_01]: I think we're they're solid players, right, some like you better than others.
- 1:04:29[SPEAKER_01]: If I'm looking at this roster here on the TVs and I go, okay.
- 1:04:34[SPEAKER_01]: Let me pull one off for an injury and just pick a name, right?
- 1:04:36[SPEAKER_01]: Obviously, Benford's the last one you want, damn good player.
- 1:04:40[SPEAKER_01]: But let's pick a name, Harrison's out for injury.
- 1:04:42[SPEAKER_01]: Now, who we slaughtered not obviously IGB going there, but what's the depth behind him there?
- 1:04:47[SPEAKER_01]: I think this is probably the least deep group out of the entire, you know, team right here.
- 1:04:53[SPEAKER_01]: So, you know, say someone does get hurt and we pull IGB goes in there, Harrison's out.
- 1:05:04[SPEAKER_01]: And actually just sign a DB to come and fill that slot right do they trust him and I'm not sure they actually trust Kenny Walker to fill in on an NFL Sunday quite yet and I'm not sure the guy's an NFL player right I got to see a little more of them but You know obviously fast, but he's also covering third stringers in the last preseason game when everyone's like hey check this guy out.
- 1:05:26[SPEAKER_00]: So right I think this is probably the least deep crew on the entire team.
- 1:05:32[SPEAKER_00]: It's, I don't know, because when Brandon being drafted, IGB, he said in his press conference that that corner was the biggest position of need.
- 1:05:43[SPEAKER_00]: And everybody was like, huh?
- 1:05:44[SPEAKER_00]: But then he made an extremely thought-out point about what has this DB, what has, whatever corners looked like in the postseason and you go back to the Broncos game.
- 1:05:59[SPEAKER_00]: And here we are,
- 1:06:01[SPEAKER_00]: Trotting out Dane Jackson, and he gets torched, right?
- 1:06:05[SPEAKER_00]: Not yet.
- 1:06:06[SPEAKER_00]: No knock on Dane Jackson, but he's not a starting corner.
- 1:06:09[SPEAKER_00]: And then you talk about years past when playing the chiefs and Christian Benford's out.
- 1:06:15[SPEAKER_00]: And some other guys are out, like it's a serious conversation to have about down the stretch.
- 1:06:22[SPEAKER_00]: And I think drafting the guy in the second round to develop him all season,
- 1:06:27[SPEAKER_00]: so that if he needs to play in week 15, 16, 17 or in the postseason, he can play.
- 1:06:33[SPEAKER_00]: He's been with the team all year.
- 1:06:35[SPEAKER_00]: He's practiced, blah, blah, blah, if you need to get him some rotational value, you know, or in games where you're winning and you're not concerned about giving up some points in the fourth quarter, maybe you get him some snaps.
- 1:06:49[SPEAKER_00]: I just, I see a world where Harrison and Ignoson,
- 1:06:55[SPEAKER_00]: are actually splitting some reps here and there.
- 1:06:59[SPEAKER_00]: I'm not saying it's a lot, but I see a world where they're gonna inject IGB just to try to put him out there in certain situations to see what happens.
- 1:07:07[SPEAKER_00]: And with Hancock being as flexible as he is, if something happens to Harrison and you're not comfortable with IGB, DL for can play on the outside.
- 1:07:17[SPEAKER_00]: They can absolutely put him on the outside.
- 1:07:19[SPEAKER_00]: If you need him to play on the outside and then you have a nickel corner already on the roster.
- 1:07:24[SPEAKER_01]: Well, I think this back end here, I think if we look back to a retrospective of this upcoming season, we go, okay, that defense was stellar, right?
- 1:07:36[SPEAKER_01]: Why do we win the Super Bowl?
- 1:07:38[SPEAKER_01]: I think to me, I think IGB has to be the starter.
- 1:07:41[SPEAKER_01]: I think he has to pass Harrison, and you make Harrison the guy that kind of gives him the break or becomes kind of your swing guy there.
- 1:07:52[SPEAKER_01]: like I look at the depth here and I'm like I've got some concerns, but I think at some point.
- 1:07:57[SPEAKER_01]: I've got to have IGB as my number two corner and he's got to take that job from Harrison and be like this is mine and I you get him and Benford I'm not going I like Harrison.
- 1:08:07[SPEAKER_01]: I think he's a really good player I don't look at him go this year and think he's going to lock down corners.
- 1:08:13[SPEAKER_01]: I think he's going to run with the fast guy on the outside.
- 1:08:15[SPEAKER_01]: He's maybe covering you know Xavier worthy or someone, but I don't see him going up against I don't pick a receiver.
- 1:08:23[SPEAKER_01]: Agia Brown or someone and being like, Oh, I got this guy locked down.
- 1:08:27[SPEAKER_01]: You know, I just don't see that.
- 1:08:28[SPEAKER_01]: I could see IGB being that role.
- 1:08:31[SPEAKER_01]: And I think he's got to take that over.
- 1:08:32[SPEAKER_01]: So, you know, what I'm looking at this year, how quickly can he do that if he can.
- 1:08:38[SPEAKER_01]: But I think he's going to be instrumental for this defense.
- 1:08:41[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, I think, I mean, the overarching thing is the guys that were drafted for a previous regime are the guys that we all have questions about, right?
- 1:08:51[SPEAKER_00]: Duane Carter, right?
- 1:08:53[SPEAKER_00]: Landon Jackson, right?
- 1:08:55[SPEAKER_00]: Javon Solomon, TJ Parker,
- 1:09:00[SPEAKER_00]: who else, Jalen, oh no, not Kilbur, Jordan Hancock, which I like Jordan Hancock.
- 1:09:07[SPEAKER_00]: Maxwell Hairston, like all these guys were drafted Dorian Williams, Terrell Bernard, like these guys were signed and then Terrell Bernard was given a massive contract for a different defense of system.
- 1:09:18[SPEAKER_00]: It's a little bit different when you talk about the DBEs because like Christian Benford,
- 1:09:23[SPEAKER_00]: can he's going to be good in this system or the last system.
- 1:09:27[SPEAKER_00]: He's going to be fine.
- 1:09:28[SPEAKER_00]: But like Maxwell Harrison, that was a need in the defense that the bills absolutely needed last year taken in the first round.
- 1:09:37[SPEAKER_00]: And now
- 1:09:38[SPEAKER_00]: Like, is that the type of guy that Jim Leonard watches the tape and he just celebrates over seeing like I can make this guy work?
- 1:09:46[SPEAKER_00]: Like he does with coal bishop or he's outwardly said coal bishop, I can't wait to get my hands on this guy.
- 1:09:53[SPEAKER_00]: You know what I mean?
- 1:09:54[SPEAKER_00]: Like that type of stuff like at Oliver.
- 1:09:56[SPEAKER_00]: He said the same thing, I can't wait to get my hands on at Oliver because I know that I can turn him into something unlocked something that we haven't seen yet.
- 1:10:05[SPEAKER_00]: So it's going to be really interesting to see how all of these guys are deployed and how they can grow from the previous defense because we have to watch last year's draft class just as much as we have to watch this year's draft class because of lack of playing time TJ Sanders was injured landing Jackson was injured.
- 1:10:24[SPEAKER_00]: So it's going to be interesting hand cock to hardly play it all.
- 1:10:27[SPEAKER_00]: So it's going to be super interesting to see how those guys carry over.
- 1:10:32[SPEAKER_00]: So I was going to touch on the practice squad.
- 1:10:34[SPEAKER_00]: We don't have to talk about it.
- 1:10:36[SPEAKER_00]: too much.
- 1:10:38[SPEAKER_00]: Again, we're hitting our two, if you guys haven't already, please hit the like button, that helps support everything that we're doing here at first and five.
- 1:10:46[SPEAKER_00]: Again, that's Greg.
- 1:10:47[SPEAKER_00]: I'm Dave.
- 1:10:48[SPEAKER_00]: We're here Monday through Friday when our personal schedules allow.
- 1:10:53[SPEAKER_00]: One of us will be here.
- 1:10:54[SPEAKER_00]: At least one of us will be here.
- 1:10:56[SPEAKER_00]: You might see a different face in one of these in these boxes.
- 1:11:01[SPEAKER_00]: Anything on the practice squad surprised you at all.
- 1:11:03[SPEAKER_00]: We could start there and then if you want to go through it I think the the usual suspects came back.
- 1:11:08[SPEAKER_00]: Oh wait.
- 1:11:09[SPEAKER_00]: Gino Stone What was your take on that because after they cut him I didn't think he was coming back.
- 1:11:15[SPEAKER_00]: I really didn't
- 1:11:18[SPEAKER_01]: you know, I was actually so I was surprised they cut them to be honest with you.
- 1:11:22[SPEAKER_01]: Hello.
- 1:11:23[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, I thought looking at just kind of your precision show groups and again, I'm looking at and going, okay, I don't know.
- 1:11:32[SPEAKER_01]: Like I didn't expect him in the be here, so I thought you kind of filter the, you know, filter people through, but surprise to see him bring him back.
- 1:11:42[SPEAKER_01]: It's good.
- 1:11:43[SPEAKER_01]: I think the guy can, you know,
- 1:11:47[SPEAKER_01]: guy can serve a role when he needs to, but I don't know.
- 1:11:50[SPEAKER_01]: I'm not the biggest hamman fan, but I think he's a safety blanket, right, to use your turn from before.
- 1:11:55[SPEAKER_01]: I'm going to know what you're getting out about him.
- 1:11:57[SPEAKER_01]: He's consistent, you know, he's going to get you what it gets here.
- 1:12:01[SPEAKER_01]: I thought they might have taken a shot with, so I may be a little more athletic, I think Jino Stone is more
- 1:12:07[SPEAKER_01]: But again, I don't know, like no one else picked them up.
- 1:12:11[SPEAKER_01]: So I'll go get the I.B.
- 1:12:15[SPEAKER_00]: I think that tomorrow Hamlin had two interceptions in preseason and that gave him a raster spot.
- 1:12:20[SPEAKER_00]: But we're not going to go there.
- 1:12:22[SPEAKER_00]: I don't want to talk about tomorrow Hamlin anymore.
- 1:12:26[SPEAKER_00]: Greg Dorch is interesting because Pot return was a huge topic for a lot of people.
- 1:12:34[SPEAKER_00]: It just, I mean, it just was one thing that I feel like all summer spraying and then into summer, then through preseason, like everybody's concerned with who's a return in punts.
- 1:12:45[SPEAKER_00]: And then a lot of the majority of Bill's fans were like, shut up, who cares?
- 1:12:49[SPEAKER_00]: It's punts.
- 1:12:51[SPEAKER_00]: I'll tell you why I care.
- 1:12:53[SPEAKER_00]: Seriously, I had a few people actually DM me on X and say, why are you so concerned?
- 1:12:58[SPEAKER_00]: Get over it dude, it's just punt return.
- 1:13:00[SPEAKER_00]: Well, the bills were 26th in the league with starting field position after a punt return last year.
- 1:13:07[SPEAKER_00]: That is unacceptable for a Super Bowl caliber team.
- 1:13:10[SPEAKER_00]: I don't care, would you rather start at the 15 or the 30?
- 1:13:15[SPEAKER_00]: I'm just putting that out there.
- 1:13:16[SPEAKER_00]: And if you have a guy that can get you consistent seven to 15 yards on a punt return, eight to 15 yards, you want that on your roster.
- 1:13:24[SPEAKER_00]: Now, does Joe Brady and Brandon being see that position have so much value that it's going to be a roster spot?
- 1:13:35[SPEAKER_00]: That's the question, or are we going to game day inactive an offensive lineman so that Greg Dorch can return puns?
- 1:13:42[SPEAKER_00]: You know what I'm saying, because he's a slot receiver, we have, we have a bunch of those, not saying that he can't be serviceable because he can catch passes, but he's, he's a really good punt returner and watching Ray Dave is fumble the only opportunity he had, maybe he'll get better.
- 1:13:59[SPEAKER_00]: I don't want key on back there, and I don't want to secure back there.
- 1:14:03[SPEAKER_00]: So what's your thoughts?
- 1:14:05[SPEAKER_01]: So, okay, I got to ask you a question on this one.
- 1:14:09[SPEAKER_01]: My guess is they will make an offensive while I'm in an active and a large, you know, if they, if they continue to like them, they'll have them just play that special teams role and then fill in in case there's some sort of, you know, depth injury.
- 1:14:21[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 1:14:22[SPEAKER_01]: How could you don't like Kian back there?
- 1:14:24[SPEAKER_01]: I would put them back there.
- 1:14:28[SPEAKER_00]: I don't know.
- 1:14:29[SPEAKER_00]: Give them one thing to worry about.
- 1:14:31[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, if that's the one thing you want me to worry about, that's fine.
- 1:14:35[SPEAKER_00]: Just worry about him running routes like I don't know like I was pro key on on pot return for a little while and then I'm thinking to myself All right, and I don't want to go long and he on because I've spent two years talking about key on like if If If key on needs to focus on something let him focus on running routes which it looks like this summer His route running looks like it's improved a lot actually
- 1:15:01[SPEAKER_00]: from the stuff that he's seen the private workouts he's been working with Stevie Johnson and some other things.
- 1:15:07[SPEAKER_00]: Like, if you're just making a punt returner, then don't put him on, I don't want him running rounds.
- 1:15:13[SPEAKER_00]: Just make him focus on one thing at practice.
- 1:15:16[SPEAKER_00]: And it stinks that we have to say that, but I think that's where we're at with Keon Coleman.
- 1:15:20[SPEAKER_00]: Like give him one responsibility and one responsibility or either he returns points or he's the fourth wide receiver.
- 1:15:27[SPEAKER_00]: Whatever it is.
- 1:15:30[SPEAKER_01]: So here, part of this is bias, right?
- 1:15:34[SPEAKER_01]: I'm not a big key on fan.
- 1:15:36[SPEAKER_01]: I hope he has a, I hope he gets everything situated and a guy becomes a superstar or really serviceable receiver.
- 1:15:44[SPEAKER_01]: I don't have hopes that's what will happen.
- 1:15:47[SPEAKER_01]: So I look at him like, how do I utilize this guy's skill set?
- 1:15:49[SPEAKER_01]: Because he certainly has some skills.
- 1:15:51[SPEAKER_01]: He was a good in college at returning puns.
- 1:15:53[SPEAKER_01]: I can do that.
- 1:15:55[SPEAKER_01]: What happens if we get through like we get, right, and Keon as a receiver is the Keon we all know as a receiver doesn't fight for the balls can't get open, you know, George gets hurt on a kid like do we put them back there then and if we do that like are we,
- 1:16:13[SPEAKER_01]: Like, if we're only, like, focus on that one thing.
- 1:16:15[SPEAKER_01]: Hey, be a better receiver.
- 1:16:17[SPEAKER_01]: Let's get our stuff, get this offense, clicking.
- 1:16:20[SPEAKER_01]: And we stick them back there.
- 1:16:22[SPEAKER_01]: Like, do we give up on them?
- 1:16:23[SPEAKER_01]: What are we doing at that point?
- 1:16:24[SPEAKER_01]: So, like, I don't really know what to make of this whole key on thing.
- 1:16:28[SPEAKER_01]: We're going to find out I just I look at the guy run routes and stuff and I'm like this guy just doesn't have it right at least he's not in the scheme he should be in he's not the outside guy he's not going to you know teach it that way you know he'll catch a deflected ball here and there and For some unbelievable come back against Baltimore, but if the guy's just I don't he's not an NFL.
- 1:16:49[SPEAKER_01]: like a number one or number two receiver to me.
- 1:16:51[SPEAKER_01]: So, like, I want to use the guy's skill set, I would stick him back there and be like, damn, you know, let's see what we got on this guy.
- 1:17:00[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, it's just interesting that he did it.
- 1:17:04[SPEAKER_01]: Did he have a pop return in preseason?
- 1:17:06[SPEAKER_01]: I can't remember.
- 1:17:06[SPEAKER_00]: I know that he was doing it in a lot of practice.
- 1:17:09[SPEAKER_00]: He was doing put returns, especially early on, like a lot of people were excited because he was very successful, but he was also a very successful
- 1:17:19[SPEAKER_00]: He was a big boy that proved he was a big boy to other people in college and we've yet to see that come to fruition in the NFL a couple of times we've seen it here and there he's caught a couple of jump balls you know and like you said it's he's frustrating because he'll make the hell have a game like he did against Baltimore now I understand Baltimore secondary as we learn throughout the season last year was not great.
- 1:17:44[SPEAKER_00]: But he made plays like that catch off the deflection when Josh, I think it was overthrown to concave in the minute.
- 1:17:51[SPEAKER_00]: He was either concave or knocks.
- 1:17:53[SPEAKER_00]: It went off his hands and he made it.
- 1:17:54[SPEAKER_00]: Like it was a great catch and then he had that play to get him into field goal position.
- 1:17:59[SPEAKER_00]: And that's the stuff that that's the key on that is the second round pick.
- 1:18:04[SPEAKER_00]: And I think a lot of the scrutiny on Keyon is maybe you could say it's Keyon's fault sure for not looking like he's
- 1:18:14[SPEAKER_00]: I think he's a third or fourth round pick and the bills reached and if he's a third or fourth round pick, he doesn't have these expectations.
- 1:18:22[SPEAKER_00]: He has a guy that's a fourth wide receiver given 30 receptions a year and that's what a fourth round wide receiver gets you unless you're Skyler Bell because I feel like that's a whole another like I feel like he's going to be something special.
- 1:18:35[SPEAKER_01]: Um, but that's kind of my point though, like let's say he was drafted in 34 let's just say fourth round he was a fourth round receiver right we're going to get you 30 you know 30 catches a year.
- 1:18:45[SPEAKER_01]: All right, what are those four that I'm going to see for us do?
- 1:18:47[SPEAKER_01]: A lot of them are contribute on special teams too, right?
- 1:18:50[SPEAKER_01]: So like stick it back there, let the guy.
- 1:18:52[SPEAKER_01]: I don't know, hopefully the dorge thing just kind of settles itself, but it's risky once injuries start happening, like to your point, are we making someone who we should probably have as on the game, they roster healthy, a scratch, you know, so we can have a guy just return a couple of ponds again.
- 1:19:10[SPEAKER_01]: Right, and those might be injuries dictates this, right?
- 1:19:13[SPEAKER_01]: Maybe it's week five and there's some injuries and you want to keep it off extra offense alignment.
- 1:19:17[SPEAKER_01]: So like, all right, you know, let's have Kian return over a turn on today, but it's not going to be the full-time thing.
- 1:19:23[SPEAKER_01]: So it'll be interesting to watch how it shakes out, but I would stick them back there.
- 1:19:27[SPEAKER_01]: You guys get some talent.
- 1:19:29[SPEAKER_00]: I can see, too, unless Josh feels differently about Skyler Bill, where they activate Greg Dorch and he is wide receiver five.
- 1:19:39[SPEAKER_00]: and Skylar Bell is Game Bay inactive.
- 1:19:41[SPEAKER_00]: I'm not saying I would do that, but I can see a world where they kind of ease him into his role.
- 1:19:48[SPEAKER_00]: To me, week one, he should be catching passes from Josh Allen.
- 1:19:52[SPEAKER_00]: Like I feel like the game's not too big for him.
- 1:19:55[SPEAKER_00]: I feel like he was second in college football last year in receiving yards for a reason, because he's that guy.
- 1:20:03[SPEAKER_00]: And the reason I feel like he slipped to the fourth round
- 1:20:08[SPEAKER_00]: People don't know what he is like what is he a downfield guy is he a slot guy is he an intermediate guy is like what is he's not a big body like what is he he caught a bunch of passes but he was also the only receiver that was worth anything on the team so it'll be interesting one guy to tackle jedric wills junior the bills sign of the practice wise tackle.
- 1:20:31[SPEAKER_00]: The Browns drafted him 10th over all in 2020.
- 1:20:35[SPEAKER_00]: So he's had some injury concerns.
- 1:20:38[SPEAKER_00]: But if healthy, this might be the bill's next swing tackle.
- 1:20:41[SPEAKER_00]: If he can just get his body right, it's highly under the radar signing by the bills to the practice squad.
- 1:20:47[SPEAKER_00]: And
- 1:20:48[SPEAKER_00]: say what you want about the the Browns being able to develop guys but he was he was released and the bills scooped him up and I think if they can get him healthy and get him coached up a little bit I think he can be the bill swing tackle for a while and I think he could be a cheap option there so anything else about the practice squad we got can I walker a lot of people were we're hoping he'd come back Andre Jones Jr.
- 1:21:11[SPEAKER_00]: I like a lot as an outside line
- 1:21:18[SPEAKER_00]: Um, I'd like I said, you know, stone, um, Chek Thompson's the big name, obviously.
- 1:21:23[SPEAKER_00]: I don't think he's going to last too long on the practice squad.
- 1:21:26[SPEAKER_00]: I feel like he's going to be someone that they're going to need.
- 1:21:29[SPEAKER_00]: And like a lot of the over reactions and myself included about the 10 offensive linemen, I don't think that's going to stick very long.
- 1:21:36[SPEAKER_00]: I think that that was a way to get guys through the waiver wire.
- 1:21:39[SPEAKER_00]: Um, because there's a few guys that I feel like if they would have
- 1:21:47[SPEAKER_00]: Um, so it'll be interesting to see how these guys, I mean, this is a, like you see the graphic there.
- 1:21:54[SPEAKER_00]: I think it's, it's a pretty stacked practice squad.
- 1:21:57[SPEAKER_00]: And let me ask you a question.
- 1:22:00[SPEAKER_00]: And I was thinking about this last night.
- 1:22:03[SPEAKER_00]: So with the expansion of the practice squad going to 16 guys.
- 1:22:08[SPEAKER_00]: Do you feel like?
- 1:22:10[SPEAKER_00]: But this is making younger players make more NFL rosters because teams know that they can sign veterans to the practice squad now.
- 1:22:19[SPEAKER_00]: So for instance, why I say that, if the bills wanted to sign Shack Thompson, they could assign them to the act of roster, would Joe and Jason have made the bills roster?
- 1:22:32[SPEAKER_01]: I don't know.
- 1:22:33[SPEAKER_00]: Probably not, right?
- 1:22:34[SPEAKER_00]: But you know that you can go get Shack Thompson and put them on the practice squad.
- 1:22:38[SPEAKER_00]: You know, stuff like that like genome stone say what you want about the guy, but what he had been on the roster instead of one of the younger guys or something like, you know, things like that that I think of like Greg Dorch would they have had to do something else to get him onto the roster.
- 1:22:55[SPEAKER_00]: But knowing that he's a veteran that they could sign of the practice squad, and I was thinking about it I'm like do a lot of the younger say 67th round in undrafted for agents make the roster Because they can find veterans to put on to the 16 man practice squad that they can elevate later on and just game day inactive The guys that they're trying to develop on the active roster.
- 1:23:15[SPEAKER_00]: Does that make sense?
- 1:23:16[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, it does, and my guess, my gut would tell me that the NFL, that's exactly what they wanted, right?
- 1:23:23[SPEAKER_01]: When they expanded that, I know they expanded it during COVID.
- 1:23:25[SPEAKER_01]: So you probably had some of that, but there's no doubt that you, I mean, you look at like Bella check was probably a big year in the room back then as well, just being like, hey, I can't develop players anymore, right?
- 1:23:37[SPEAKER_01]: So they won kind of that homegrown talent.
- 1:23:39[SPEAKER_01]: You've got salary cap constraints and stuff like that.
- 1:23:41[SPEAKER_01]: So my guess is that was intentional as they were going through
- 1:23:46[SPEAKER_01]: In kind of expanding out the practice web roster to do exactly that let's keep some of these six seven's round picks and also makes those picks more important right, so if you know I don't know I don't watch a six seven's round the last round of the draft.
- 1:24:00[SPEAKER_01]: It's just I'm like, oh, just tell me who they pick and I'll catch up later All right, but it is it it's still even it's still a television show, you know back then so yeah
- 1:24:11[SPEAKER_01]: If most of those guys are getting caught, like, everyone's going to be like me and they're like, I don't need to watch us.
- 1:24:16[SPEAKER_01]: I don't need to know who someone picks in the sixth round because they're probably not making the team.
- 1:24:20[SPEAKER_01]: So, you know, it's, you know, my guess is it is absolutely helping more people make rosters, but it was also intentioned by the NFL when they decided to do that.
- 1:24:30[SPEAKER_00]: 100% because I was thinking about it, I'm like, they couldn't find a spot on the practice squad for a Toriano pride.
- 1:24:37[SPEAKER_00]: Now he was claimed off waivers by the Browns, but it's like players like that, like our Maus Reed Adams, like he's a seventh round draft pick, and he made the Bill's active roster.
- 1:24:46[SPEAKER_00]: What he have made it before they changed the practice squad to 16 players, probably not, right?
- 1:24:54[SPEAKER_00]: I don't think he would have.
- 1:24:54[SPEAKER_00]: So I just thought that was interesting.
- 1:24:56[SPEAKER_00]: So the question I'll ask you,
- 1:25:00[SPEAKER_01]: Is this, this will be like a multi-part question, the first part is this roster better than last year's roster to you right now as of two weeks, 12 days until the season starts I think so I think it is well I mean we can go position by position right so receiver absolutely right DJ more makes a huge difference it's better and I think
- 1:25:27[SPEAKER_01]: I look at health as part of, is it better roster too?
- 1:25:29[SPEAKER_01]: We talked about Josh Palmer earlier, right?
- 1:25:31[SPEAKER_01]: If he can stay healthy, automatic upgrade, right?
- 1:25:34[SPEAKER_01]: So we get there.
- 1:25:35[SPEAKER_01]: So receivers better offensive lines pretty much the same.
- 1:25:38[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, you get some in and out, but for the most part, the continuity is still there.
- 1:25:42[SPEAKER_01]: I think you have, you know, a fairly decent depth there.
- 1:25:47[SPEAKER_01]: Defense align, I mean, he's still returning through so, however, kind of be your big players.
- 1:25:51[SPEAKER_01]: They're talking about a high, I think the second team is better.
- 1:25:55[SPEAKER_01]: I think even secondary, which is a concern of mine, you've still got, I think your safety's are overall or better, you know, cold bishop is cold bishop and he's awesome, but I think Gardner Johnson's upgrade.
- 1:26:09[SPEAKER_01]: I wasn't, I hated the second there last year.
- 1:26:11[SPEAKER_01]: Go ahead, let's see, and so like, I look at, even if it's, you know, IGB is a rookie, like, hell, I'm cool with it, right?
- 1:26:19[SPEAKER_01]: So I think overall it is a better roster.
- 1:26:23[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, I agree too.
- 1:26:25[SPEAKER_00]: I feel like, and again, take all of this with the grand solpe because we haven't seen this defense play.
- 1:26:31[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, in full snap, we haven't seen the offense.
- 1:26:33[SPEAKER_00]: I don't think I think what we saw against the Panthers.
- 1:26:38[SPEAKER_00]: with the ones out there was just Josh Allen, getting reps with DJ Moore.
- 1:26:45[SPEAKER_00]: They threw some passes to Cleo Shakir.
- 1:26:46[SPEAKER_00]: They ran some run plays with James Cook just to get, let's knock a little rust off.
- 1:26:53[SPEAKER_00]: I don't think that they were giving away any secrets.
- 1:26:55[SPEAKER_00]: I don't think I still think that was very vanilla play calling.
- 1:26:59[SPEAKER_00]: I do like what they did.
- 1:27:00[SPEAKER_00]: They had guys moving around the field and it wasn't just the mesh kind of in steps where guys would just run to a spot in the middle of the field.
- 1:27:07[SPEAKER_00]: So I like that, but yeah, I think I like the defensive depth overall.
- 1:27:14[SPEAKER_00]: Now we don't know how Jim Leonard's going to deploy his defensive line, like what kind of rotation, obviously on early downs, you know, what you're going to be typically run downs, you're going to have the beef, the beefy guys up front, you know, the Greg Gaines and the DN walkers, but after that in past downs, I'm excited to see what Michael Hoyt can do.
- 1:27:31[SPEAKER_00]: I'm excited to see what Javans Salmon can do, I'm excited to see what we're so
- 1:27:35[SPEAKER_00]: Um, and Bradley Chub and all these guys and TJ Parker.
- 1:27:39[SPEAKER_00]: I'm excited to see what all these guys can do.
- 1:27:40[SPEAKER_00]: Um, to get after the pastor because I do think that it's going to be more aggressive defensively.
- 1:27:47[SPEAKER_00]: And I liked the fact that the very first preseason game I saw a different defense than I saw for nine years.
- 1:27:53[SPEAKER_00]: So I'm not that's not a knock on McDermott at all because we we knew like I said we knew the floor with McDermott.
- 1:28:01[SPEAKER_00]: was Ben but don't break, they're probably going to be pretty good.
- 1:28:04[SPEAKER_00]: Let's cross our fingers in the postseason, right?
- 1:28:06[SPEAKER_00]: With Leonard, it's different.
- 1:28:08[SPEAKER_00]: So I'm excited to see the difference in what that looks like in how players play different because they're put in different positions.
- 1:28:15[SPEAKER_00]: So I'm excited to see that.
- 1:28:18[SPEAKER_00]: So last topic before we get out of here, there's 12 days until kickoff.
- 1:28:27[SPEAKER_00]: Do you have a Jim Kelly story or like what's I guess what's your fondest Jim Kelly moment?
- 1:28:34[SPEAKER_00]: It's been a while right and I feel like Jim Kelly, well, it's hard because Josh is just going to break every record that he has right.
- 1:28:47[SPEAKER_00]: So I feel like the younger generation doesn't really know a lot about Jim Kelly because it was back in the 90s.
- 1:28:57[SPEAKER_00]: just anything about Jim Kelly and then we can kind of, we can take off after that.
- 1:29:01[SPEAKER_01]: So I think my favorite one is, it probably a lot of people's favorite one is that dolphins game when they finally beat them, be dives into the end zone at the end of the game.
- 1:29:13[SPEAKER_01]: And remember where I was watching that game and was that 88?
- 1:29:17[SPEAKER_01]: 88?
- 1:29:17[SPEAKER_01]: Was it 89 or 89?
- 1:29:23[SPEAKER_00]: I just watched it because yeah, we put the video on Facebook.
- 1:29:28[SPEAKER_00]: I just watched it not too long.
- 1:29:30[SPEAKER_01]: So I was either 10 or 11, but I remember exactly where I was, what the room looked like, watching that game.
- 1:29:36[SPEAKER_01]: I remember it like that was the pivotal moment for me, which it is for a lot of bills fans.
- 1:29:40[SPEAKER_01]: So from a game perspective, that's the one that always sticks out to me.
- 1:29:44[SPEAKER_01]: just personally I know a lot of people will say you know he was kind of brash back in the day right cocky whatever it is.
- 1:29:52[SPEAKER_01]: So I used to work at Delta Sonic right down the road from the stadium wiping cars off.
- 1:29:56[SPEAKER_01]: So a lot of the bills players would come and get you know what you know get their cars wash after practice or whatever.
- 1:30:01[SPEAKER_01]: So
- 1:30:02[SPEAKER_01]: you know, you get receivers or running bags that would like hand you receiving gloves or you don't find stuff for you and then give you tips as well.
- 1:30:09[SPEAKER_01]: So Kelly was there a lot and like that was just a good tip or he was always nice though and I was probably because we were kids, right, you know high school kids or whatever.
- 1:30:19[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 1:30:20[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, he was just always a nice guy when he came through, so I was just kind of appreciate that I'm sure when he was out drinking or whatever, like most young 20 year olds do, right, some of that probably changes, but he was always just a really nice guy and I always appreciated that about him.
- 1:30:36[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, I remember there was it had to be 1991.
- 1:30:44[SPEAKER_00]: I'm dating myself.
- 1:30:46[SPEAKER_00]: I was a freshman in high school and I was at Weigmans on, I don't even remember what street it was on.
- 1:30:55[SPEAKER_00]: It was by the boulevard mall, the Weigmans right over there.
- 1:30:58[SPEAKER_00]: Anyways, he was there shopping with his wife.
- 1:31:02[SPEAKER_00]: And everybody was mobbing him.
- 1:31:05[SPEAKER_00]: And I remember my dad's like, leave him alone.
- 1:31:09[SPEAKER_00]: He's not gonna, it was like a Friday afternoon and I don't know, but he was out shopping with his wife and they were just, you know, doing whatever and he was cordial with everybody and I remember him, you know,
- 1:31:23[SPEAKER_00]: That was back in the day when you go to Wegmans and you put your cans in the machine, or your bottles in the machine, and it takes all your, remember that?
- 1:31:30[SPEAKER_00]: They take all your recycles, and I was doing that, and he was walking out, and I said, hey, Jim, and he looked at me and he said, go bills.
- 1:31:39[SPEAKER_00]: And he was happy smiling, and he gave me the thumbs up, and I was like, you know, all the stories people talk about this man being rude and just being nasty.
- 1:31:47[SPEAKER_00]: And then you look at him now,
- 1:31:51[SPEAKER_00]: the way he is now like he's beloved in Buffalo like he's he's like a saint like he's and he's always positive he's always out there in the community so but yeah I mean there's a ton of bills stuff that you know we put some stuff out this morning for for Jim because it's 12 days until the season starts so but other than that
- 1:32:10[SPEAKER_00]: We talked about the roster, we talked about the practice squad.
- 1:32:13[SPEAKER_00]: I don't want to give away the whole week's worth of content in one show.
- 1:32:17[SPEAKER_00]: So we'll be back tomorrow.
- 1:32:18[SPEAKER_00]: We have a ton more to talk about.
- 1:32:20[SPEAKER_00]: And then next week, we'll start getting you guys ready for the bills and Texans.
- 1:32:25[SPEAKER_00]: So Greg, anything else before we get out of here, man?
- 1:32:27[SPEAKER_01]: No, man, that was good.
- 1:32:29[SPEAKER_01]: Hopefully, hopefully, we got through every position on the roster and good enough to eat to help.
- 1:32:34[SPEAKER_01]: That was fun.
- 1:32:35[SPEAKER_01]: It's good shaking the rust off a little bit.
- 1:32:36[SPEAKER_00]: I haven't podcasted in a while.
- 1:32:38[SPEAKER_00]: Well, you get to do it all over again tomorrow.
- 1:32:42[SPEAKER_00]: All right, for Greg, I'm Dave.
- 1:32:43[SPEAKER_00]: This has been First and Five.
- 1:32:45[SPEAKER_00]: We'll see you guys tomorrow.
