- 1:48Speaker 3: to hear later on this podcast from coach Tomlin, who
- 1:50Speaker 3: had his media availability today ahead of that Week one game.
- 1:53Speaker 3: But we know it's fever pitch and it's not just
- 1:55Speaker 3: fevere pitch for this game this weekend. We know now
- 1:58Speaker 3: we're freeing a half weeks just on We're just over
- 2:01Speaker 3: three weeks away from the historic twenty twenty five NFL
- 2:04Speaker 3: doubling game. Delighted to welcome in one of the best
- 2:07Speaker 3: Gaelic footballers on the island of Ireland just after a
- 2:11Speaker 3: stellar season. Obviously when in the All Ireland with Kerry
- 2:14Speaker 3: we know he's a Steelers fan. We know he's an
- 2:16Speaker 3: NFL fan. Great to have Patty Clifford firstly join us
- 2:19Speaker 3: on the Irish Sitters podcast presented by Erlings. Delighted to
- 2:26Speaker 3: have partly join us on the Irisheries podcast. Party. I
- 2:28Speaker 3: don't even know how many times you've been on this
- 2:30Speaker 3: podcast now, but say, you know, how are you doing?
- 2:32Speaker 3: Good to have you on?
- 2:35Speaker 4: Yeah, I think maybe third time maybe, but yeah, delighted
- 2:39Speaker 4: to be back on.
- 2:41Speaker 3: Fair times a charm. Look, I know you're busy man,
- 2:43Speaker 3: Thank you for coming on. Look, we are going to
- 2:46Speaker 3: stick off with the football chat here, but I do
- 2:47Speaker 3: want to just start off by congratulating new lads of
- 2:49Speaker 3: winning the All Ireland mad a few weeks. Few lads,
- 2:52Speaker 3: I mean, have you settled down yet because it looked
- 2:54Speaker 3: like a real party down there.
- 2:58Speaker 4: Yeah, I know it was great. Obviously it was great
- 2:59Speaker 4: for us few weeks, but I suppose we've had. We've
- 3:03Speaker 4: had the club games now, so I had to have
- 3:05Speaker 4: to refocus for them. So yeah, just trying to get
- 3:11Speaker 4: the bodies right for for the club games though, and
- 3:14Speaker 4: keep going with them hopefully you know.
- 3:17Speaker 3: More than a lot of people what it's like to
- 3:19Speaker 3: play in Crop Park to you know, to experience the
- 3:22Speaker 3: highs of those. Obviously NFL Double Game coming up, I think
- 3:25Speaker 3: is our first time having you on since it was
- 3:27Speaker 3: officially announced on this podcast. What's it like for people listening?
- 3:31Speaker 3: What's it like playing in Croke Park, going up, walking
- 3:34Speaker 3: up past the hill, the atmosphere or something that there.
- 3:38Speaker 4: Yeah, it's obviously it's it's really like I suppose it's
- 3:43Speaker 4: what you it's what you grew up and it's what
- 3:46Speaker 4: you're dream to do when you grow up. But yeah,
- 3:49Speaker 4: it's great, Like it's just it's kind of it's it's
- 3:52Speaker 4: so low. It's hard to it's hard to hear the
- 3:56Speaker 4: it's hard to hear to talk to the the person
- 3:58Speaker 4: besides you. You can't hear anything. But I think you just
- 4:01Speaker 4: blocked the eyes out and once you get inside the
- 4:03Speaker 4: white lines, you just have to block everything out. But
- 4:08Speaker 4: it's obviously a dream to play in in crow Park
- 4:12Speaker 4: and obviously a bigger dream again to win there.
- 4:16Speaker 3: You were at the Steelers launching Crook Park a couple
- 4:19Speaker 3: of years ago when they launched the marketing campaign for
- 4:21Speaker 3: the Island of Ireland. If somebody had said to you
- 4:24Speaker 3: that day that they'd be playing in Crook Park in
- 4:27Speaker 3: twenty four months, would you believe.
- 4:28Speaker 4: Them to be honest, No, I wouldn't have. I suppose
- 4:35Speaker 4: they were kind of all about trying to make it happen,
- 4:40Speaker 4: but I couldn't see it. I couldn't see it. I
- 4:43Speaker 4: couldn't see it happening this quickly anyway. So it's very exciting.
- 4:47Speaker 4: It's it's going to be great, like, it's going to
- 4:50Speaker 4: be an unbelievable experience for for all NFL fans.
- 4:57Speaker 5: In Ireland, but especially Steelers fans.
- 5:01Speaker 3: Hopefully it's the first of many. I know a lot
- 5:02Speaker 3: of people are excited for it. People that don't know
- 5:05Speaker 3: you outside of Gaelic football will know now that you're
- 5:09Speaker 3: a big NFL fan. Do you enjoy the offseason when
- 5:12Speaker 3: it's seven months long and it finally kicks in this wig?
- 5:17Speaker 6: Yeah?
- 5:18Speaker 4: I know I'm a massive NFL fan and college football fan,
- 5:21Speaker 4: but at least that was back last week. But yeah,
- 5:24Speaker 4: like it's a long way, isn't it Without games.
- 5:28Speaker 5: I know you've got you the draft, which takes a.
- 5:31Speaker 4: Bit of time up to talking about it and talking
- 5:35Speaker 4: about it before and after, but it's only it's only
- 5:40Speaker 4: when the real game start this week now that the
- 5:42Speaker 4: excitement rems up. Hopeful it will be a great season,
- 5:46Speaker 4: but just delighted that it's back this week. It's real.
- 5:50Speaker 4: It's it's great for the week, like the Thursday night
- 5:52Speaker 4: game and obviously the weekend the sun it's a it's
- 5:55Speaker 4: a great Sunday with with a full of games.
- 6:00Speaker 3: Steeers playing the Jets, which is for Irish viewers anyway
- 6:03Speaker 3: on Sky Sports this weekend. We'll talk about that in
- 6:05Speaker 3: the week. Second, the biggest story of the offseason poly
- 6:08Speaker 3: obviously is Arn Rodgers coming in. You've you've been an
- 6:10Speaker 3: NFL fan for a while to see a guy that's
- 6:12Speaker 3: played for Green Bay. Obviously didn't work out too well
- 6:15Speaker 3: in terms of the New York Jets with the injury,
- 6:18Speaker 3: but anytime you have the option of getting the Sky
- 6:20Speaker 3: and you have to bring him in.
- 6:22Speaker 4: Yeah, definitely, Like I suppose three or four years ago,
- 6:27Speaker 4: if you were told we'd be getting Aaron Rodgers, you'd
- 6:29Speaker 4: be very excited obviously coming off the injury and a
- 6:35Speaker 4: season with the Jets. So we're we don't know what's
- 6:38Speaker 4: going to happen, but I suppose there we can be
- 6:42Speaker 4: optimistic that maybe if you get it's back anywhere near
- 6:45Speaker 4: his old form and as there's some pieces in place
- 6:50Speaker 4: around him that yeah, maybe can work out. But it's
- 6:54Speaker 4: going to be interesting to see, to be fair, it's
- 6:57Speaker 4: going to be exciting to see.
- 6:59Speaker 5: But now we're just hoping for the best.
- 7:00Speaker 3: I suppose one guy that they have brought in a
- 7:04Speaker 3: lot on the defensive side of the ball, obviously bringing
- 7:06Speaker 3: in different guys, but one guy on the offense side
- 7:08Speaker 3: of the ball. DK mccalf. We've seen him before, above
- 7:11Speaker 3: us have seen him. The guy is unbelievably fast. If
- 7:15Speaker 3: he's going to get the ball down the field, Rogers,
- 7:17Speaker 3: it has to be something they got. Like have you
- 7:19Speaker 3: enjoyed the offseason? Have you been keeping up? Have you
- 7:21Speaker 3: been keeping up with it that much in terms of
- 7:23Speaker 3: guys coming in draft, et cetera.
- 7:26Speaker 5: No, Yeah, I have followed everything.
- 7:28Speaker 4: Really, I suppose, yeah, Like K backcalf is obviously exciting
- 7:35Speaker 4: because we haven't really had a number one receiver, a
- 7:38Speaker 4: trustworthy number one receiver in a few years, so that's
- 7:44Speaker 4: going to be very exciting.
- 7:45Speaker 5: And I'm told that.
- 7:47Speaker 4: They've got a good relationship so far, so Aaron Rodgers
- 7:50Speaker 4: does like to have a good relationship with his number
- 7:53Speaker 4: one target, so that's exciting. And then getting getting Jayalen
- 8:01Speaker 4: Ramsey as well. Getting Jayleen Ramsey is probably gonna change
- 8:08Speaker 4: some of the schemes and the way they're gonna approach
- 8:11Speaker 4: the defensive sides of the ball, so that should be good.
- 8:17Speaker 4: But again, I'm not like a bit like last year
- 8:18Speaker 4: that we're probably hopes aren't unbelievable high or anything like that,
- 8:22Speaker 4: but just hoping for the best that we can have
- 8:24Speaker 4: the best season possible. It's a very hard division.
- 8:26Speaker 3: Obviously, it's not a bad thing thinking like you, because
- 8:30Speaker 3: if you set the stall out, you're quite neutral in
- 8:33Speaker 3: the sense you'll get excited no matter what. I will
- 8:35Speaker 3: see what happens. I don't believe you have the chance
- 8:38Speaker 3: to go over to Pittsburgh before, do you ever, like,
- 8:39Speaker 3: look at the schedule and go. I'd love to go
- 8:41Speaker 3: to somebody's games. I know it's hard for you guys
- 8:43Speaker 3: when you've got Championship and different things. But when you
- 8:46Speaker 3: look at the schedule, like Steelers play the Packers, that's
- 8:49Speaker 3: gonna be Rogers first game against Green Bay since he
- 8:52Speaker 3: left at the end of October. It's definitely a city
- 8:55Speaker 3: that we need to get you out to at some point.
- 8:57Speaker 5: Yeah, definitely, I suppose.
- 8:59Speaker 4: Yeah, like I haven't actually got to go to Pittsburgh,
- 9:03Speaker 4: but I was, I suppose planning it like for the
- 9:06Speaker 4: last few years. But that that the Steelers are playing
- 9:10Speaker 4: Dublin probably saves me a journey. But yeah, I'll definitely,
- 9:15Speaker 4: I'll definitely get there probably maybe probably not this year,
- 9:19Speaker 4: but probably next year.
- 9:22Speaker 5: So yeah, I really look forward to that as a.
- 9:24Speaker 3: We marked on the calendar. And I'll tell you what
- 9:26Speaker 3: you're talking about his journey. It's it's enough of a
- 9:28Speaker 3: journey from carry the Dublin, nevermind from Dublin the Pittsburgh.
- 9:31Speaker 3: So we'll see the crack just on that. Like, look,
- 9:35Speaker 3: it's it's interesting to get like obviously something like yourself
- 9:38Speaker 3: if you're an NFL fan coming on here and asking
- 9:40Speaker 3: the obvious question about Dublin pody, have you been surprised by?
- 9:44Speaker 3: For me, it's been like the reaction to this game
- 9:46Speaker 3: being announced, and we've just seen like so many different
- 9:50Speaker 3: NFL fans come out, but more so as well, like
- 9:51Speaker 3: JAF fans ask some questions at the time of recording
- 9:55Speaker 3: the announced today, like the rteam band is going to
- 9:56Speaker 3: be a part of it. It just have you seen
- 9:58Speaker 3: a real jump in the interest in terms of the
- 10:01Speaker 3: league over the last few months since it was announced?
- 10:04Speaker 4: Yeah, I have to be fair, but I suppose it's
- 10:06Speaker 4: been the Irish interest has been building over the last
- 10:10Speaker 4: few years, hasn't it. But yeah, it's really ramped up.
- 10:15Speaker 4: You can really see the amount of NFL fans in Ireland.
- 10:18Speaker 4: I suppose what makes it so exciting is that I
- 10:24Speaker 4: suppose a lot of people would have thought that it's
- 10:26Speaker 4: a long it would be a long long way away
- 10:28Speaker 4: that an actual NFL game would be in Dublin. So
- 10:31Speaker 4: for to be happening so soon must be exciting people.
- 10:35Speaker 4: And yeah, I suppose if there was, if there was
- 10:39Speaker 4: five hundred thousand people could fit in in crow Park there,
- 10:42Speaker 4: probably they probably feel it. So because of the amount
- 10:46Speaker 4: of NFL fans, the amount of I suppose Irish American
- 10:51Speaker 4: people that are going to want to come over Steelers fans,
- 10:54Speaker 4: Vikings fans. Yeah, like I suppose it's just going to be.
- 11:00Speaker 4: There's just so much interest in it and you can
- 11:02Speaker 4: see why you to be fair because it is very exciting.
- 11:06Speaker 3: Just finally, before we let you go, I'm not looking.
- 11:07Speaker 3: I'm not gonna ask you for a game prediction. We
- 11:09Speaker 3: all know everyone picks of Steeters. It's hard to believe
- 11:11Speaker 3: we're playing a half weeks waft in this game. Have
- 11:14Speaker 3: you any plans yet for a game weekend? There is
- 11:16Speaker 3: there anything that you're excited for in terms of just
- 11:18Speaker 3: getting up to the city.
- 11:20Speaker 5: No, I'm very excited just for the whole build up.
- 11:25Speaker 4: I'm not sure what they I'm gonna hit up, but
- 11:27Speaker 4: just very excited for the build up A few days
- 11:29Speaker 4: before the Royder Cup I think is starting that we
- 11:33Speaker 4: can assult. So yeah, it'll be plenty on and it
- 11:35Speaker 4: should be. It should be great crack hopefully we can.
- 11:39Speaker 4: Hopefully they'll be good crack around around the street and
- 11:43Speaker 4: at the game and after the game, so not, it
- 11:45Speaker 4: should be great.
- 11:46Speaker 3: Hopefully we're celebrating the staters on the Europe Double that
- 11:50Speaker 3: evening as well. Probly a best look to you and
- 11:52Speaker 3: everyone playing for your local club and everybody in the
- 11:55Speaker 3: championship across not just Carry but across Ireland as well.
- 11:57Speaker 3: I know it's peak season coming into it now and
- 12:00Speaker 3: then thanks for popping on, especially when you lads are
- 12:02Speaker 3: busy trending as well. I see you in a few
- 12:03Speaker 3: weeks of quipment.
- 12:04Speaker 5: Thank you, Thanks very much, looking forward to.
- 12:09Speaker 3: Big Thanks to Pouty for coming on and always had
- 12:11Speaker 3: a busy few weeks Champo everything else. So thank you
- 12:14Speaker 3: very much, Pouty, and I know a lot of us
- 12:15Speaker 3: are excited to see Potty up in Croker in a
- 12:18Speaker 3: few weeks for what is a historic day. A man
- 12:20Speaker 3: that was there at the start of this journey a
- 12:22Speaker 3: couple of years ago and a man that will be
- 12:24Speaker 3: there on the big day itself. And as we roll
- 12:27Speaker 3: on on the Irishitters podcast on this episode presented by Erlingus,
- 12:31Speaker 3: It's a big day. Coach Tomlin had his media availability
- 12:34Speaker 3: today for the New York Jets game coming up this Sunday.
- 12:37Speaker 3: As he said, you can listen off the Ball Sports radio,
- 12:40Speaker 3: but you can also watch on Sky Sports this weekend.
- 12:43Speaker 3: Here's a little bit of what coach Tomlin had to
- 12:45Speaker 3: say ahead of the game this weekend.
- 12:52Speaker 6: Really excited about getting our season started against the New
- 12:57Speaker 6: York Jets. Before I get into those guys, all give
- 13:00Speaker 6: you a quick injury update thankfully as we sit here
- 13:02Speaker 6: today and really just based on the structure of the
- 13:05Speaker 6: preseason and how it's set up is done so that
- 13:08Speaker 6: we all get an opportunity to kind of move into
- 13:10Speaker 6: the season as healthy as possible. Not having a game
- 13:15Speaker 6: last week obviously last weekend helps that. Derek Harmon is
- 13:19Speaker 6: the only guy this juncture that I would characterize is out.
- 13:23Speaker 6: I would characterize herbick as questionable. He had a really
- 13:26Speaker 6: good day yesterday, and so we'll leave the door jar
- 13:29Speaker 6: for him and see where work leads us during the
- 13:32Speaker 6: course of the week. Certainly, his participation in the quality
- 13:36Speaker 6: of his participation will be the key variables in terms
- 13:40Speaker 6: of our decision making whether or not we choose to
- 13:42Speaker 6: use him or not. Other than those two instances, man,
- 13:45Speaker 6: we're largely a healthy group. Certainly had some bumps and
- 13:50Speaker 6: bruises associated with preseason work, and some people have been
- 13:54Speaker 6: non participants in games, some of it due to injuries,
- 13:58Speaker 6: some of it due to precaution.
- 14:00Speaker 5: Uh.
- 14:00Speaker 6: Some of those guys have been working their way back.
- 14:03Speaker 6: Alex Heismith, for example, and others, but we don't anticipate
- 14:06Speaker 6: in any of those guys availability being in any way questionable.
- 14:12Speaker 6: You can include Calvin Austin for example, in that discussion.
- 14:17Speaker 6: And so we got a relatively healthy group excited about that.
- 14:22Speaker 6: We had some really good quality work yesterday, UH, getting
- 14:25Speaker 6: the weekend off of us working on some football conditioning,
- 14:27Speaker 6: some based football things, things that are that are us,
- 14:32Speaker 6: some things that are based New York. And so with
- 14:35Speaker 6: that I'll get into talking about New York. Certainly there's
- 14:39Speaker 6: some challenges in week one, UH, schematic personality, division of
- 14:47Speaker 6: labor agenda, if you will, I think it gets magnified
- 14:52Speaker 6: sometimes when you have a new staff, uh, and particularly
- 14:56Speaker 6: a new staff with first time coordinators, like on the
- 14:58Speaker 6: offensive side of the ball for them. But to be
- 15:01Speaker 6: quite honest with you, if we've been in this business
- 15:03Speaker 6: any list of time, it's almost kind of commonplace with
- 15:06Speaker 6: this time of year. We were very much in the
- 15:08Speaker 6: same circumstance twelve months ago, leaning in on on Week one,
- 15:12Speaker 6: we were getting ready to play the Falcons. They had
- 15:15Speaker 6: a new staff for first time offensive play caller, and
- 15:18Speaker 6: so we had to do some speculating there. And so
- 15:20Speaker 6: it certainly is a challenge, but not one that's unfamiliar
- 15:25Speaker 6: with this time of year. There's enough, obviously for us
- 15:30Speaker 6: to work on. And the component of Week one football
- 15:34Speaker 6: is not necessarily about who you play, but how you play.
- 15:39Speaker 6: The quality of our play, the cleanliness, the technical expertise,
- 15:45Speaker 6: the minimize it of penalties, and things of that nature
- 15:47Speaker 6: oftentimes determine quality performance in Week one, and so make
- 15:51Speaker 6: no mistake, we got a lot of respect for the
- 15:53Speaker 6: challenges of preparing for and then ultimately playing the Jets,
- 15:56Speaker 6: But like most people, in Week one, our focus is
- 16:00Speaker 6: the quality of our work, the quality of our play,
- 16:03Speaker 6: our division of labor, our ability to display situational knowledge
- 16:08Speaker 6: and execute and make quality plays within them circumstances, etc.
- 16:13Speaker 6: That being said, I'll start talking about the Jet offense.
- 16:17Speaker 5: Man.
- 16:18Speaker 6: You gotta start first with their running game.
- 16:21Speaker 5: Man.
- 16:22Speaker 6: They got a deep and talented backfield led about Hall
- 16:25Speaker 6: and Allen. If you look at the history of their staff,
- 16:31Speaker 6: those two kind of represent maybe what Gibbs and Montgomery
- 16:34Speaker 6: represented to the Detroit Lions, and so we've been looking
- 16:37Speaker 6: at it through that lens. Make no mistake, they're both
- 16:41Speaker 6: very capable. Allen really burst onto the scene. I thought
- 16:44Speaker 6: a year ago as a rookie out of Wisconsin. He's
- 16:47Speaker 6: got a down, he'll run demeanor and style the Powell
- 16:50Speaker 6: always seems to fall in the direction that he desires
- 16:53Speaker 6: it to. Breis Hall is multi talented. He can run inside,
- 16:58Speaker 6: he can run outside. He had a lot of explode
- 17:00Speaker 6: and plays a year ago on the perimeter. He's good
- 17:03Speaker 6: out of the backfield in the passing game check downs,
- 17:07Speaker 6: but beyond checkdowns in one on one matchups and so forth,
- 17:10Speaker 6: and lined outside of the backfield, He's displayed that skill
- 17:13Speaker 6: set and so we certainly got to be ready for
- 17:17Speaker 6: that component to play. He broke a check down for
- 17:21Speaker 6: fifty seven or so yards on us last year. That
- 17:24Speaker 6: really kind of changed the complexion of that game early
- 17:26Speaker 6: on when we had already had an anticipation of his
- 17:29Speaker 6: talents in that area and he was still able to deliver.
- 17:32Speaker 6: And so their running backs and their commitment to the
- 17:35Speaker 6: running game, I think, I think Coach Glenn has been
- 17:40Speaker 6: very transparent about their design to run the football and
- 17:42Speaker 6: their commitment to doing so, and so that has our
- 17:46Speaker 6: attention as we prepare think think a great deal about
- 17:50Speaker 6: their linebacker tandem Sherwood and williams Man. There their talented
- 17:55Speaker 6: and an emerging homegrown group, if you will, particularly as
- 17:58Speaker 6: it pertains to Sherwood. Man, he's grown up. I think
- 18:00Speaker 6: he's a former fifth round pick that's kind of evolved
- 18:03Speaker 6: over his time in New York and it's been rewarded
- 18:06Speaker 6: for that evolution with a big contract. And that linebacker tandem,
- 18:11Speaker 6: that second level linebacker tandem. Man, it's played a lot
- 18:13Speaker 6: of ball together. They both were highly productive a year ago.
- 18:17Speaker 6: I'd imagine that to continue to grow and prosper in
- 18:21Speaker 6: the secondary. Obviously, sauss Gardener is a is a is
- 18:25Speaker 6: a top flight bump corner, a first round acquisition, a
- 18:30Speaker 6: top draft pick, if you will. They've acquired Stevens, who
- 18:34Speaker 6: obviously we're familiar with from his time in Baltimore, to
- 18:37Speaker 6: play opposite of him, and so they got a quality
- 18:40Speaker 6: veteran corner tandem. They got Cisco who's new at safety,
- 18:44Speaker 6: and so they got some tigh quality talent at all
- 18:47Speaker 6: three levels.
- 18:48Speaker 5: Uh.
- 18:48Speaker 6: They got a coordinator in Steve Wilks that's been doing
- 18:52Speaker 6: it a long time and at a high level. And
- 18:54Speaker 6: couple that with the fact that obviously coach Glenn has
- 18:57Speaker 6: a defensive background, and I'm certain that that he'll have
- 19:00Speaker 6: some involvement and and creates some some speculation issues for us,
- 19:04Speaker 6: particularly in week one. As I mentioned at the beginning,
- 19:08Speaker 6: there's some speculation associated with this time of year and
- 19:11Speaker 6: the things that he might bring to what they do
- 19:13Speaker 6: defensively is something that that is a topic of discussion,
- 19:17Speaker 6: and so we got a lot to talk about. We
- 19:19Speaker 6: have some planning of our own. We got some physical
- 19:22Speaker 6: work ahead to ready our guys and to further divide
- 19:25Speaker 6: our labor up, particularly situationally, and so we got a
- 19:28Speaker 6: bunch of decisions to make. But such as life this
- 19:30Speaker 6: time of year, particularly on a Tuesday, but we love
- 19:35Speaker 6: all of that. It's awesome to be here.
