- 0:01Speaker 1: In this corner, standing at 6'5, weight class unknown, but
- 0:04Speaker 1: hailing from the city of sin, put your hands together
- 0:07Speaker 1: for Jamison Welch.
- 0:08Speaker 2: And in this corner, standing at 5'10, weighing.
- 0:11Speaker 1: In at * * * pounds, and coming to us
- 0:14Speaker 1: from his super secret bunker with no AC in Tucson, Arizona,
- 0:18Speaker 1: put your hands together for Luis Montemayor.
- 0:20Speaker 3: Thank you.
- 0:26Speaker 2: Thank you.
- 0:26Speaker 1: Welcome back to another episode of Mixed Company Podcast. Of course,
- 0:29Speaker 1: I'm on half of the show. My name is Jameson.
- 0:31Speaker 1: As always, I'm joined by Luis. Luis, what's going on, man?
- 0:35Speaker 3: Well, big news from the previous weekend was another one
- 0:38Speaker 3: of those monthly TNT-sponsored fights or partner fights, whatever you
- 0:42Speaker 3: want to call it. We had Andrew Ruiz versus Damien
- 0:45Speaker 3: Kaniba fighting at heavyweight.
- 0:47Speaker 4: And you know what? I'll say this.
- 0:49Speaker 3: I watched four fights, three really fun, exciting, action-packed fights.
- 0:54Speaker 4: And then the main event, Kind of a dud. I'm
- 0:56Speaker 4: not going to lie.
- 0:58Speaker 3: Yeah, Andy Ruiz, we had said before we were kind
- 1:02Speaker 3: of less enthused about.
- 1:03Speaker 4: Him being, you know, the headliner in this TNT event.
- 1:08Speaker 4: And yeah, my man just.
- 1:09Speaker 2: Couldn't pull it off.
- 1:10Speaker 3: Went the distance, showed a lot of heart. So, you know,
- 1:13Speaker 3: definitely have to respect him for that. But he just
- 1:15Speaker 3: doesn't have it. He does not have it anymore. And,
- 1:18Speaker 3: you know, a lot of the commentators were even saying,
- 1:20Speaker 3: is this the last we see of Andy Ruiz? I
- 1:22Speaker 3: got way more to say, as always, but I want
- 1:24Speaker 3: to get your take on what you saw on Friday
- 1:26Speaker 3: night and where we're at.
- 1:27Speaker 4: Yeah, it's one of.
- 1:30Speaker 1: Those things where you kind of see where a guy
- 1:32Speaker 1: has had his best days. I always say the older
- 1:35Speaker 1: you get, the better shape you need to be in.
- 1:37Speaker 1: And conditioning has never been his strong point. So as
- 1:39Speaker 1: you get older, those bad habits end up showing up
- 1:42Speaker 1: at the worst of times. So here we are. We're
- 1:45Speaker 1: seeing a guy that's very talented with his hands, quick hands,
- 1:48Speaker 1: powerful hands, but the conditioning sucks. The conditioning just wasn't there, unfortunately,
- 1:53Speaker 1: and failed him again. At the same time, there's not
- 1:57Speaker 1: a demand to see him going forward.
- 1:59Speaker 2: That's the thing.
- 1:59Speaker 1: So even if he can fight going forward, I don't
- 2:02Speaker 1: think people really care about him fighting going forward. I
- 2:05Speaker 1: think that's probably the biggest issue he has. Agreed.
- 2:09Speaker 3: And yeah, you know, he's always had really strong hands,
- 2:11Speaker 3: like you said, but he wasn't able to use them.
- 2:13Speaker 3: You know, Keneva was keeping him at a distance with
- 2:15Speaker 3: his jab all night long, and he just didn't have
- 2:17Speaker 3: the opportunity to throw any combos. And, you know, I'm not,
- 2:21Speaker 3: breaking any news here, but I will say the thing
- 2:23Speaker 3: that I noticed the most, apart from him not throwing combos,
- 2:28Speaker 3: losing to speed, the commentator said, you know, he was always,
- 2:30Speaker 3: he was never fast on his feet anyway. I actually
- 2:34Speaker 3: realized how much worse he was at moving the top
- 2:36Speaker 3: half of his body. If you remember the Anthony Joshua knockout,
- 2:41Speaker 3: the way he was moving, dodging those punches, the uppercuts,
- 2:44Speaker 3: like that man looked good. he was very impressive for
- 2:47Speaker 3: a very, very big dude to move that way. And
- 2:50Speaker 3: he just didn't have that ability to, you know, Bob,
- 2:52Speaker 3: we get under, get under those jabs. And at that point,
- 2:57Speaker 3: when you're not able to land a power punch, when
- 2:59Speaker 3: you're not fast on your feet and you can't even
- 3:01Speaker 3: do that, I'm sorry, man.
- 3:02Speaker 4: You just, you don't got the juice anymore. You know
- 3:04Speaker 4: what I'm saying?
- 3:05Speaker 2: You got to remember that was seven years ago. True.
- 3:08Speaker 1: That's a long, first of all, again, he wasn't in
- 3:10Speaker 1: great shape seven years ago. So, you know, good and
- 3:13Speaker 1: goddamn well, he ain't going to be in good shape
- 3:15Speaker 1: this time.
- 3:16Speaker 2: So you're correct.
- 3:17Speaker 1: Your body movement, his body movement was much better back
- 3:20Speaker 1: then than it is now. But again, those are things
- 3:23Speaker 1: as you get older, that's why it's important to maintain
- 3:25Speaker 1: great physical shape because you can still get by. Even
- 3:29Speaker 1: if your skills are somewhat diminished, if you're still in shape,
- 3:32Speaker 1: you can get by with certain things, but you can't
- 3:35Speaker 1: be older, more out of shape, et cetera, et cetera.
- 3:38Speaker 2: It don't work that way.
- 3:40Speaker 3: Well, here's a question for you because Yes, he has
- 3:42Speaker 3: never been in the best shape. I don't think it's
- 3:46Speaker 3: disrespectful to say he's a fat guy, and that's okay.
- 3:48Speaker 3: He definitely trained a lot. They saw a lot of
- 3:50Speaker 3: videos of his time off jumping rope and trimming down.
- 3:53Speaker 3: But we've all seen their big dudes that are still athletic.
- 3:58Speaker 3: You know other sports way more than I do, but
- 4:00Speaker 3: the only one that comes to mind off the top
- 4:01Speaker 3: of my head is Refrigerator Perry. But is there something
- 4:05Speaker 3: in other sports that you can be a big guy.
- 4:07Speaker 4: That's athletic that just doesn't translate to boxing? Obviously, it's
- 4:11Speaker 4: a hard sport in the world.
- 4:12Speaker 1: I mean, baseball, you got guys that either are or
- 4:14Speaker 1: were out of shape like that. Baseball still did well.
- 4:17Speaker 1: But with boxing, it covers so much. There's so much
- 4:22Speaker 1: that goes into boxing. You're constantly moving. You're constantly breathing.
- 4:26Speaker 1: You're constantly shifting. You're constantly moving your hands. You can't
- 4:30Speaker 1: be out of shape with that. Baseball, yeah, if you
- 4:32Speaker 1: can hit, sure, you can hit home runs. You can
- 4:35Speaker 1: hit doubles. You can hit singles, run to first base,
- 4:37Speaker 1: take a deep breath. There's no deep breaths in boxing.
- 4:40Speaker 1: There's none of that. You're constantly moving. You're constantly being active.
- 4:44Speaker 1: So with that being said, it's very difficult to be
- 4:47Speaker 1: an older and out-of-shape fighter because it takes so much
- 4:50Speaker 1: out of you. So that's the thing. So a guy
- 4:52Speaker 1: like Ruiz, yes, he might be powerful. But, man, if
- 4:56Speaker 1: you make it attract me, he can't win.
- 4:59Speaker 3: Yeah, and I was actually honestly surprised just hearing the
- 5:02Speaker 3: crowd how excited they were for it to come out.
- 5:04Speaker 4: It was Newark.
- 5:06Speaker 3: A lot of Hispanic people up in the Northeast, well, everywhere, but,
- 5:08Speaker 3: you know, major city, a lot of Mexican, other Hispanic
- 5:12Speaker 3: folks out there.
- 5:13Speaker 4: And, you know, they were cheering for him. Honestly, I
- 5:16Speaker 4: was surprised.
- 5:16Speaker 3: I was like, oh, this guy still has this many
- 5:18Speaker 3: people really rallying behind him after all this time.
- 5:21Speaker 2: We've been through this before.
- 5:23Speaker 1: If you don't matter, like, once you have, like, a
- 5:27Speaker 1: good day as a boxer, you win a belt, and
- 5:30Speaker 1: you're of any race, you're going to get claimed for life.
- 5:33Speaker 2: That's how it goes.
- 5:35Speaker 3: No, that's very true, and that's a lot of what
- 5:37Speaker 3: we talk about on the show. But yeah, at the
- 5:40Speaker 3: end of the day, I was hoping to see a
- 5:44Speaker 3: much more exciting fight than we saw. Whether Andrew Ruiz
- 5:47Speaker 3: won or not, whether he was going to have more
- 5:49Speaker 3: fights coming up, I just wanted to see a lot
- 5:51Speaker 3: of action.
- 5:52Speaker 4: And I didn't get it.
- 5:53Speaker 3: And no disrespect to Keneva for doing something that worked.
- 5:57Speaker 3: You know, constant jab, jab, jab, over and over, keeping
- 6:00Speaker 3: Ruiz at a distance. And those jabs were landing too.
- 6:03Speaker 3: So it's not like he was just flailing, you know?
- 6:05Speaker 3: So winning on points was definitely very, very clear by the,
- 6:10Speaker 3: I don't know, fourth round or whatever, because Ruiz just
- 6:13Speaker 3: couldn't touch him. And then we had that, oh God,
- 6:15Speaker 3: what was it? Fifth or sixth round when Andy Ruiz
- 6:18Speaker 3: was just getting his ass kicked.
- 6:21Speaker 4: I'm surprised.
- 6:22Speaker 3: I honestly thought that was going to be it. I
- 6:24Speaker 3: did not expect the ref to let it keep going
- 6:26Speaker 3: because he was not defending himself intelligently.
- 6:29Speaker 4: That's the standard.
- 6:30Speaker 3: He was just getting rocked by hooks, very clean, just
- 6:34Speaker 3: wasn't able to dodge. And I have, let's not call
- 6:37Speaker 3: it a conspiracy theory, but just something that came to mind.
- 6:40Speaker 3: There were a couple of fights that night where I
- 6:42Speaker 3: was like, there's no way this is still going. Is
- 6:45Speaker 3: there anything, any truth to maybe like, you got to
- 6:47Speaker 3: spread that shit out because they got ads on TNT
- 6:49Speaker 3: or something?
- 6:51Speaker 1: No, because here's the thing. That's why you have a studio.
- 6:54Speaker 1: That's why you have former champions. So luckily we, hell,
- 6:58Speaker 1: the most entertaining thing Match of the night was between, like,
- 7:01Speaker 1: Bud and them. Like, that was, you know, that was
- 7:05Speaker 1: the most entertaining stuff throughout the whole night was the,
- 7:08Speaker 1: you know, when you got Bradley and Porter and Bud
- 7:10Speaker 1: and Boots.
- 7:11Speaker 2: And all the guys.
- 7:11Speaker 1: Like, that to me is, like, the best part because
- 7:15Speaker 1: those guys are, we've seen them fight recently, but they're all,
- 7:18Speaker 1: you know, giving great analysts and, you know, being active
- 7:21Speaker 1: and talking about each other and whatnot. So those are
- 7:24Speaker 1: the things that makes the thing go.
- 7:25Speaker 2: So, I mean, here's the thing, too. Same thing with pay-per-views, right?
- 7:28Speaker 1: You can't control what happens in a fight If there's
- 7:30Speaker 1: three short knockdowns in a row, there's really not much
- 7:33Speaker 1: you can do because if that's like a pay-per-view, you're
- 7:36Speaker 1: trying to get as much buys up. So back in
- 7:38Speaker 1: the day, what they would do is they would just stall.
- 7:42Speaker 1: There was one, there was a Pacquiao fight in 2012.
- 7:46Speaker 1: I forgot who he was fighting, but they waited until
- 7:50Speaker 1: after the NBA playoff game to start it. It's just
- 7:53Speaker 1: how it goes. But yeah, there's no conspiracy needed for that.
- 7:56Speaker 1: It's always been a thing because remember, a lot of
- 7:58Speaker 1: these preliminary fights They are what they are. You know,
- 8:01Speaker 1: all of these prelims are, you know, um, you know,
- 8:05Speaker 1: we know as an opportunity or as a chance of
- 8:09Speaker 1: them not going the full distance. So that's just what you,
- 8:12Speaker 1: what you do now, with that being said, if you've
- 8:15Speaker 1: got like multiple championship fights on ticket, that's something totally different. That's,
- 8:19Speaker 1: that's different, but it happens, but no, there's no conspiracy.
- 8:21Speaker 1: This is how it go.
- 8:24Speaker 4: Gotcha.
- 8:25Speaker 3: Uh, Well, and definitely, like I said, a very fun
- 8:27Speaker 3: night of boxing. The one particular fight that was awesome
- 8:31Speaker 3: was Alan Chavez versus Erickson Garcia. And that's another one
- 8:36Speaker 3: that Alan Chavez got knocked down four times.
- 8:39Speaker 4: And by the second time, I thought, this is it.
- 8:42Speaker 4: They're going to call it.
- 8:43Speaker 3: The ref is going to wave it out. There's no
- 8:44Speaker 3: way this guy can keep it going. And he went
- 8:47Speaker 3: the distance, which is wild to me again.
- 8:49Speaker 4: Shows a lot of heart.
- 8:51Speaker 3: And I, I would say probably that was a tricky one.
- 8:54Speaker 3: Cause I would think, did he lose pretty because he
- 8:56Speaker 3: made it all the way to the end, but also he,
- 8:58Speaker 3: it was a very clear, uh, domination by, by Garcia
- 9:02Speaker 3: on that one.
- 9:03Speaker 4: Uh, I don't know.
- 9:04Speaker 3: I mean, what's the, uh, what's the take there when
- 9:07Speaker 3: you get your ass kick, but you stay on your
- 9:08Speaker 3: feet to the end for the 10 rounds.
- 9:11Speaker 1: It really depends on who you're fighting. That's the biggest thing, right?
- 9:14Speaker 1: So you're fighting someone that you're fighting prime, but Crawford,
- 9:17Speaker 1: you make it to the end. That's an accomplishment. But
- 9:20Speaker 1: if you're fighting someone that's equally as talented as you,
- 9:23Speaker 1: and you make it to the end, no one's going
- 9:25Speaker 1: to care. You know what I mean? So it really depends.
- 9:27Speaker 1: But also, too, when you make it to the end,
- 9:30Speaker 1: the fight's always a good thing if you're able to.
- 9:31Speaker 1: That's the first thing. But it really depends on the
- 9:35Speaker 1: circumstances and the situation. Because the biggest thing is this.
- 9:38Speaker 2: At the end of.
- 9:39Speaker 1: The day, you're judged based off your expectation, not necessarily
- 9:43Speaker 1: the results.
- 9:44Speaker 2: You're judged based off the expectation. So if you're expected
- 9:46Speaker 2: to lose badly and make it to the distance, it's
- 9:49Speaker 2: a win.
- 9:50Speaker 1: If you're expected to win big and it goes to
- 9:53Speaker 1: the cards and the shaky, you judge a certain way
- 9:56Speaker 1: of that too.
- 9:57Speaker 2: So it really varies on these things. Like every situation.
- 10:00Speaker 1: Is different uh but winning ugly is always acceptable losing
- 10:06Speaker 1: pretty is what it is what you don't want to
- 10:09Speaker 1: do is lose ugly because losing ugly is a whole
- 10:11Speaker 1: different conversation we lose ugly losing ugly you know it
- 10:14Speaker 1: gets you're always When you lose ugly, you're always at
- 10:18Speaker 1: the risk of fighting before the sun goes down.
- 10:22Speaker 4: And that's never good.
- 10:23Speaker 1: That's never good. Especially if you're not, like, a known...
- 10:26Speaker 1: If you're not making seven figures for a fight, which
- 10:29Speaker 1: most guys aren't, you're out. You're one bad event away
- 10:34Speaker 1: from fighting very, very early in the afternoon. Like, before
- 10:38Speaker 1: they put the seat covers on and shit. So you know, like,
- 10:42Speaker 1: when fighters at MGM, they have the M-Life thing on
- 10:43Speaker 1: the seats.
- 10:44Speaker 2: Yes.
- 10:45Speaker 1: So.
- 10:46Speaker 2: It ain't like that the whole day. It ain't like that.
- 10:49Speaker 1: They put them shits on around like 5 p.m. So
- 10:52Speaker 1: if you fight like at 4 or 3.30, they just
- 10:54Speaker 1: regular seats, brother. They just regular seats. Those are the
- 10:57Speaker 1: things you got to understand. And like, hey, when you
- 11:00Speaker 1: lose ugly, it can get ugly. So that's why most
- 11:03Speaker 1: guys try to get to the end. Most guys don't
- 11:06Speaker 1: try to get knocked down. If they do get knocked
- 11:08Speaker 1: down or, you know, they try to. Because once you
- 11:10Speaker 1: have a couple of bad performances, bro, it gets real.
- 11:13Speaker 1: And once it gets real, we don't. You start fighting
- 11:16Speaker 1: when we can't see you.
- 11:18Speaker 4: Yeah, definitely.
- 11:19Speaker 3: And I'm very curious if we will ever see Andy
- 11:23Speaker 3: Ruiz at the 4 p.m.
- 11:24Speaker 4: After this. There was not a lot of faith in
- 11:28Speaker 4: him going forward.
- 11:29Speaker 1: He's still a light draw. So he'll never be a
- 11:32Speaker 1: 4 p.m. guy because he's a draw.
- 11:33Speaker 2: He's a name. He's a former champ. So he will
- 11:37Speaker 2: never be a 4 p.m. guy per se. He's heavyweight.
- 11:40Speaker 1: So he won't be a 4 p.m. guy, but he
- 11:42Speaker 1: might be a 6.30 guy. He might be, you know,
- 11:45Speaker 1: 8 p.m., dude, that's done.
- 11:46Speaker 2: Like, no.
- 11:48Speaker 1: But he might be, like, the fight before the fight. Fight,
- 11:51Speaker 1: you know, he might be, like, the third guy, you know,
- 11:53Speaker 1: which is all right. But, yeah, the days of him
- 11:57Speaker 1: headlining a fight are over.
- 11:59Speaker 2: Agreed.
- 12:00Speaker 3: I will say, this being on Friday, there only being
- 12:02Speaker 3: four fights and not, like, 10 or 12, like other events.
- 12:05Speaker 3: You know, it started our time, 5 p.m., which is
- 12:08Speaker 3: 8 p.m.
- 12:09Speaker 4: East Coast time. I think that's kind of perfect, actually.
- 12:11Speaker 4: For one event, four fights, and they were all really exciting,
- 12:15Speaker 4: tuning in after work.
- 12:17Speaker 2: It was great.
- 12:18Speaker 3: Obviously, for us, we're not sitting there watching TV until
- 12:22Speaker 3: what would have been midnight, probably.
- 12:25Speaker 4: But that was cool.
- 12:26Speaker 3: Friday night, four fights, just turning on while you're eating
- 12:30Speaker 3: dinner in between the matches, while they're doing the commentary.
- 12:33Speaker 4: It was a really cool event.
- 12:35Speaker 3: Also, we've got to give a shout-out to this young guy,
- 12:39Speaker 3: Zakeen Moses, 21-year-old, Newark native, fifth-round stoppage, absolutely dominated, moved
- 12:46Speaker 3: great in the ring. Do we have another young, black,
- 12:50Speaker 3: Newark boxer to keep an eye on who might be
- 12:52Speaker 3: a star?
- 12:52Speaker 1: I don't know.
- 12:53Speaker 2: I would definitely take it.
- 12:54Speaker 1: I would definitely take it, man. It's always good to
- 12:56Speaker 1: see somebody fresh. Always good to see that. So that's cool.
- 13:02Speaker 2: But again, you've got to be active.
- 13:03Speaker 1: I think the biggest thing when you're trying to gain
- 13:05Speaker 1: traction is being active. Uh, there's too many guys are
- 13:08Speaker 1: too cool for school. So hopefully that's not the case here.
- 13:10Speaker 1: Hopefully we see him again for the end of the year.
- 13:12Speaker 1: You know, it's already September. There's three more, three and
- 13:15Speaker 1: a half, one month left. Got to squeeze another one
- 13:17Speaker 1: in at the end of the year. If you can
- 13:19Speaker 1: got to, it's just, those are the things for you
- 13:21Speaker 1: on fire. You got to stay active. That's the one
- 13:23Speaker 1: thing I can suggest. If you want to build a
- 13:24Speaker 1: fan base to the casual, to serious boxer fan, fight active,
- 13:29Speaker 1: put on a show. People will pay attention to you
- 13:31Speaker 1: more and more. Look forward to your fights.
- 13:34Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 13:34Speaker 3: And that's something that I've kind of bemoaned in the
- 13:36Speaker 3: past that, When you've got a young guy who's up
- 13:37Speaker 3: and coming and wants to prove himself, they're fighting four
- 13:39Speaker 3: or five times a year. Of course, to be fair,
- 13:41Speaker 3: they're fighting six rounds, eight rounds, not the full 10
- 13:43Speaker 3: or 12. But it kind of sucks that when you
- 13:47Speaker 3: become really popular, you become a champ, you get big money,
- 13:50Speaker 3: then you're expected to be seen less once a year.
- 13:52Speaker 4: I think I said on the show once that if
- 13:56Speaker 4: you fight twice.
- 13:56Speaker 3: A year, like Canelo or Inoue at least, that it's
- 14:00Speaker 3: sort of seen as going above and beyond. Sorry, being
- 14:03Speaker 3: seen as being active. Actually, if you fight once a year,
- 14:06Speaker 3: you're active. Twice a year is above and beyond.
- 14:09Speaker 1: So you've got to look at it like this. So
- 14:11Speaker 1: here's the reason why. Them dudes you mentioned get paid paid.
- 14:14Speaker 1: So they can fight once a year or twice a year.
- 14:16Speaker 1: The amount they're getting paid, they can fight once every
- 14:19Speaker 1: two years if they want to.
- 14:20Speaker 2: You know what I mean? It's different.
- 14:22Speaker 1: The reason why young guys are fighting often, the biggest
- 14:24Speaker 1: reason is the money. You're not getting paid a lot
- 14:26Speaker 1: when you're coming up. You might get a total of
- 14:29Speaker 1: 50 grand. And with that 50K, you've got to chop up.
- 14:33Speaker 2: Hell, forget that. A lot of fights, you're getting like
- 14:36Speaker 2: 20 grand. And you got to chop that up. Taxes
- 14:38Speaker 2: is half.
- 14:39Speaker 1: You got the corner, your.
- 14:41Speaker 2: Coaches, trainers, nutrition, et cetera, et cetera.
- 14:45Speaker 1: By the time you look, if you got 25K, by
- 14:48Speaker 1: the time you leave with everything, you may have 4K left.
- 14:53Speaker 2: So that's the thing. That's the situation.
- 14:55Speaker 1: So that's why you see a lot of guys fighting
- 14:57Speaker 1: more and more because the more you fight, the more
- 14:59Speaker 1: you win, the more you get.
- 15:00Speaker 2: But also, dude just broke.
- 15:03Speaker 1: Like, dude is broke. Like, I'm going to be honest
- 15:04Speaker 1: with you. Most guys got bills, kids. They got things
- 15:09Speaker 1: they like to do. So they need to fight. So
- 15:11Speaker 1: that's a big reason why guys are fighting every other
- 15:13Speaker 1: month when they're young.
- 15:16Speaker 3: As far as you know, is there other athletes in
- 15:17Speaker 3: other sports that, you know, get that much money sucked
- 15:21Speaker 3: out of their pay for events? Because football players, of course,
- 15:24Speaker 3: they got coaches, assistant coaches, but nothing like this, right?
- 15:26Speaker 2: Oh, nothing like this.
- 15:27Speaker 1: Because remember, like boxing is so unique to where, You
- 15:30Speaker 1: can be, hell, there's guys you can technically fight four
- 15:32Speaker 1: times a year, technically.
- 15:34Speaker 2: You technically could.
- 15:36Speaker 1: But every other sport is based off of like, you
- 15:39Speaker 1: get paid every two weeks because you're in a season,
- 15:41Speaker 1: per se. This is boxing where you only get paid
- 15:43Speaker 1: if you fight. So, you're not fighting to get paid.
- 15:46Speaker 1: Every other sport, you get a season, so you're getting
- 15:48Speaker 1: paid because.
- 15:49Speaker 2: That's your contract.
- 15:50Speaker 1: Your contract says you get paid X amount of times
- 15:53Speaker 1: or however much a year. So, you're going to check
- 15:55Speaker 1: every two weeks, once a month, however you have it
- 15:57Speaker 1: set up. But boxing, you only get paid when you box.
- 16:00Speaker 1: So that's why guys are fighting as much as they
- 16:02Speaker 1: can when they are young because they're broke. They ain't
- 16:04Speaker 1: got no money. And they got things they want to buy.
- 16:06Speaker 1: They got people they want to oppress. So there's reasons
- 16:09Speaker 1: why they're trying to get that money. So that's why
- 16:11Speaker 1: you see guys fighting every other month, every three months,
- 16:14Speaker 1: talking about we're ready in December and all that, et cetera,
- 16:16Speaker 1: et cetera.
- 16:17Speaker 2: That's why. Yeah, that's fair.
- 16:20Speaker 4: Definitely.
- 16:21Speaker 3: It sucks in a lot of ways, but boxing is
- 16:23Speaker 3: so different than any other sport.
- 16:24Speaker 4: That is why we love it. It's unique and fun.
- 16:27Speaker 3: It's just that there's no boxing season, although we've talked
- 16:29Speaker 3: about how summer should be boxing season or.
- 16:31Speaker 1: Officially, but this summer actually was, I'll give you credit
- 16:36Speaker 1: this summer.
- 16:37Speaker 2: It actually was.
- 16:38Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 16:38Speaker 3: I'm going to have a lot to say once, you know,
- 16:40Speaker 3: we get close at the end of the year and
- 16:41Speaker 3: just kind of review the fights that we've had and
- 16:43Speaker 3: kind of see it from a distance. Cause this seems
- 16:45Speaker 3: like one of the most exciting years for, for the
- 16:46Speaker 3: sport in a long time. But yeah, again, shout out
- 16:49Speaker 3: to Zakir Moses. And then, Since we're doing this and
- 16:53Speaker 3: we're talking about, you know, young names, this is a
- 16:54Speaker 3: guy that I brought up a few weeks ago at
- 16:56Speaker 3: one of the Zufa matches, Jaleel Hackett.
- 16:59Speaker 4: Two guys here. My eyes are on these two fighters.
- 17:02Speaker 3: And, you know, if they're shoving a card, I'm there
- 17:04Speaker 3: and I'm very excited to see because they absolutely dominated
- 17:06Speaker 3: in their fights and they just look great.
- 17:08Speaker 4: And they're babies. My God, they're babies. So they got
- 17:11Speaker 4: a lot of career ahead of them. So really, really
- 17:13Speaker 4: excited to see what comes next.
- 17:15Speaker 3: Also really cool that every TNT monthly match, they already
- 17:18Speaker 3: have the next one lined up. So for October, they
- 17:22Speaker 3: already announced that Sebastian Fundora is coming back. They also
- 17:27Speaker 3: put out the.
- 17:27Speaker 4: Date, but I didn't write it down.
- 17:28Speaker 2: I don't remember.
- 17:29Speaker 3: But it is so nice to be able to set
- 17:32Speaker 3: your watch to this, to say another fight on regular
- 17:35Speaker 3: TV just next month. And yeah, it's just another thing
- 17:39Speaker 3: to add to how... stoked I've been about the sport
- 17:42Speaker 3: this year. Just a breath of fresh air and just
- 17:45Speaker 3: wonderful to see. So, yeah, we'll be talking more about
- 17:47Speaker 3: that upcoming event. We're definitely going to be promoting it
- 17:49Speaker 3: and encouraging people to check it out. But before that,
- 17:54Speaker 3: we got a big fight this weekend. I looked at
- 17:56Speaker 3: the calendar. I could not believe that this Saturday is
- 18:00Speaker 3: already September 12th, Mexican Independence Day fight, Ryan Garcia versus
- 18:04Speaker 3: Conor Benn.
- 18:06Speaker 4: In my mind, it was like, eh, a couple weeks from.
- 18:07Speaker 3: Now, whatever, you know, a few more weeks, but No,
- 18:10Speaker 3: if you're listening to this when it comes out two
- 18:12Speaker 3: days from now, we got Garcia coming back for the
- 18:15Speaker 3: big match. And yeah, this one, I'm very interested to
- 18:20Speaker 3: see how Ryan comes back. That Mario Barrios fight, he
- 18:23Speaker 3: looked great. He looked like a Ryan 2.0. But as
- 18:25Speaker 3: we've always said, you got to keep it up. You
- 18:28Speaker 3: can't just win big, come back from a couple of
- 18:32Speaker 3: losses and a no contest, and then just slack off again,
- 18:37Speaker 3: is what I'll say. But, yeah, what are you thinking
- 18:39Speaker 3: of the– and actually, what are the odds on Garcia
- 18:42Speaker 3: versus Ben if you don't.
- 18:43Speaker 4: Mind pulling those up?
- 18:44Speaker 1: Ryan Garcia is a favorite. He is a– he is
- 18:50Speaker 1: a– he's minus 255. So that meaning– means you got
- 18:54Speaker 1: to put $ 255, 100 back if he wins. Connor Ben is
- 18:57Speaker 1: plus 210, meaning for every 100 you put on him,
- 19:00Speaker 1: you get 210 back plus your 100. So, yeah, that
- 19:03Speaker 1: kind of– Ryan's a significant favorite. He should win on Saturday.
- 19:07Speaker 4: Do you believe that? Personally.
- 19:09Speaker 2: Yeah, he's a better boxer. I mean, as long as
- 19:12Speaker 2: he's focused, he should. But it's Ryan. Like, Ryan's up,
- 19:16Speaker 2: you know. Ryan got rolling tendencies.
- 19:19Speaker 1: You know, you just never know what you're going to
- 19:20Speaker 1: get in terms of, like, the discipline and focus. Don't know.
- 19:24Speaker 1: I like to see Ryan win because that sets him
- 19:26Speaker 1: up for a big fight. That sets him up with
- 19:29Speaker 1: somebody else at 147. That could really do some damage
- 19:31Speaker 1: or do some numbers.
- 19:32Speaker 2: So, we'll see. But also, it's very important for Ryan
- 19:34Speaker 2: because you can't fight on this date. and stink it up. Like,
- 19:39Speaker 2: this is the date when you gotta really... People are
- 19:42Speaker 2: looking forward to this date.
- 19:43Speaker 1: You gotta really, really be on your shit because they
- 19:47Speaker 1: need someone to replace Canelo.
- 19:49Speaker 2: Canelo's old.
- 19:50Speaker 1: Old. He ain't fighting on this date no more. If
- 19:52Speaker 1: he does, he might got one last one in him,
- 19:53Speaker 1: but after that, it's over. So he needs to find
- 19:55Speaker 1: somebody else. There's a few other guys we can talk about,
- 19:58Speaker 1: but Ryan's a guy, not necessarily the best boxer, but
- 20:01Speaker 1: he can draw. He's a very popular guy for whatever
- 20:04Speaker 1: reason that may be. He's popular amongst people. So when
- 20:08Speaker 1: you're that and you're above average boxer on your best day,
- 20:11Speaker 1: you bring a lot of fans to the event. That's major.
- 20:16Speaker 1: So it's very imperative that he wins this weekend. If
- 20:19Speaker 1: he does not win this weekend, it's bad for Golden Boy.
- 20:23Speaker 1: It's bad for Ryan. It's bad for all the parties involved.
- 20:26Speaker 1: So let's take a look here and see what happens.
- 20:28Speaker 1: With that being said, if he's not prepared, he takes
- 20:31Speaker 1: this lightly. He deserves whatever he gets.
- 20:34Speaker 3: Well, and it's so frustrating that the fact that they
- 20:37Speaker 3: even have to ask the question, do you believe that
- 20:40Speaker 3: he will win because he's the favorite? And the answer isn't,
- 20:42Speaker 3: hell yeah, he's more talented, he's a better boxer, and we.
- 20:44Speaker 4: Stop it there.
- 20:46Speaker 3: It's always like, is he going to be focused? Is
- 20:48Speaker 3: he going to get into shenanigans?
- 20:50Speaker 4: Blah, blah, blah. Is he going to take it seriously?
- 20:52Speaker 3: It's really frustrating because we've said it a million times,
- 20:55Speaker 3: and I'll say it again, we need stars.
- 20:57Speaker 4: We need consistent, dependable stars. And here's the thing.
- 21:03Speaker 3: To me, and you and other people can disagree, that
- 21:06Speaker 3: doesn't mean they need to win every single time, have
- 21:08Speaker 3: a zero record. That just means you need to not
- 21:11Speaker 3: show up sleepy as hell.
- 21:13Speaker 1: As a professional athlete, a big part of your job
- 21:18Speaker 1: is being focused on the job.
- 21:19Speaker 2: That's a big part of your job. So sometimes he
- 21:22Speaker 2: forgets that, but yeah.
- 21:25Speaker 4: Yeah, I.
- 21:26Speaker 3: Another thing, speaking of conspiracy theories, Canelo was supposed to
- 21:30Speaker 3: fight this weekend, and then they pushed it to Halloween,
- 21:32Speaker 3: October 31st, against Mbili. In my mind, I'm like, is
- 21:36Speaker 3: it because the Saudis want to crown their next guy?
- 21:40Speaker 3: I'm not saying push Canelo out because, of course, he's
- 21:42Speaker 3: still a draw, but he's going to draw on October 31st.
- 21:45Speaker 3: I'm going to be there. But yeah, Mexican Independence Day
- 21:49Speaker 3: and Cinco de Mayo weekend are such shining stars.
- 21:52Speaker 4: Of the boxing world.
- 21:54Speaker 3: That, you know, it feels a little artificial to me
- 21:56Speaker 3: if that's the case, you know, trying to bring in Ryan.
- 21:58Speaker 4: I don't know how you feel about that.
- 22:00Speaker 1: I mean, without race, without being boxing, without race ain't boxing. So,
- 22:04Speaker 1: I mean, you got to think about it. Everyone's here
- 22:06Speaker 1: to capitalize off the situation. So you got a Mexican holiday,
- 22:09Speaker 1: which is not necessarily a three-day weekend, but it's just
- 22:12Speaker 1: a big holiday. People like celebrating Cinco de Mayo is
- 22:15Speaker 1: a big weekend. People like celebrating. This is how it is. Like,
- 22:18Speaker 1: so even though it, like you said, it feels kind
- 22:21Speaker 1: of artificial to, the powers that be going to make
- 22:24Speaker 1: it work.
- 22:24Speaker 2: That's how it goes.
- 22:25Speaker 1: Now, with everything going on, it's not the same as
- 22:28Speaker 1: it used to be. Even a fight like this, where
- 22:32Speaker 1: it's kind of like a B fight, like a B
- 22:36Speaker 1: minus fight, it would be way more buzz about it.
- 22:39Speaker 1: Like you say, it snuck up on you. And it's
- 22:42Speaker 1: basically mid-September. Back in the day, this would be talked
- 22:46Speaker 1: about more. People would be planning to come here. There
- 22:49Speaker 1: would be weak interests. People would be calling out of work.
- 22:52Speaker 1: either on that Friday or on that Monday, like it'd
- 22:53Speaker 1: be way different. Now it's like, oh, we'll watch.
- 22:57Speaker 2: We'll watch. We'll tune in and watch. And that's like, damn,
- 23:00Speaker 2: like what happened? But that's a whole different, that's a
- 23:03Speaker 2: whole different avenue.
- 23:04Speaker 1: But with all that being said, it's fascinating because they
- 23:09Speaker 1: kind of stumbled upon single to mile and Mexican independence weekend,
- 23:13Speaker 1: especially Mexican independence weekend.
- 23:14Speaker 2: They snuck up on that one.
- 23:15Speaker 1: Single to mile, to my knowledge, has always been a
- 23:17Speaker 1: big fight weekend on that one because it's always a weekend.
- 23:20Speaker 1: But Mexican Independence Weekend's always been, that's a sneaky win
- 23:24Speaker 1: that they settled upon.
- 23:25Speaker 2: They've always fulfilled it. But now, I don't know. I'm
- 23:28Speaker 2: very curious how things go going forward. I really am. Sure.
- 23:32Speaker 3: And I remember we talked about this when Benavides fought
- 23:34Speaker 3: on Cinco de Mayo. You said that the vibe in Vegas,
- 23:36Speaker 3: you being out there, was very different. It's not like
- 23:38Speaker 3: Canelo fighting on Cinco or September.
- 23:40Speaker 2: No. By any means.
- 23:41Speaker 4: And I'm very curious to hear.
- 23:42Speaker 3: I'm assuming next week we're going to say the same thing,
- 23:45Speaker 3: is that the vibes in Vegas were not the same.
- 23:47Speaker 4: But obviously... Yes.
- 23:48Speaker 1: I'm going to be very, very curious because a big
- 23:50Speaker 1: part is this. It's more than just the boxing fight itself.
- 23:56Speaker 1: It's about the people coming to town, about people who catch,
- 24:00Speaker 1: people who are talking about it. That's what makes these
- 24:03Speaker 1: events special is that, oh, this bit was so big, everybody.
- 24:07Speaker 2: Talking about it.
- 24:08Speaker 1: And also, like, Canelo... Canelo brought them things out, man. Women, hey,
- 24:13Speaker 1: they was looking nice, brother. Hey, dudes had their hats on,
- 24:16Speaker 1: their belt buckles, hey, their boots. Everybody looking sharp. Everybody
- 24:19Speaker 1: looking nice. No matter if they was young, old, whether
- 24:22Speaker 1: they was a businessman, whether they inherited money, whether they
- 24:25Speaker 1: was getting money another way, whatever it was, people.
- 24:28Speaker 2: Was looking nice.
- 24:29Speaker 1: People was looking right. They looked professional, smelled good, looked good, hairlined.
- 24:34Speaker 1: Everything was good. It's not the same anymore. That's the thing.
- 24:37Speaker 1: I don't know who the next guy is. That's going
- 24:40Speaker 1: to get people of all ages to look right. That's
- 24:43Speaker 1: my thing. Even Benavidez, as good as he is, a
- 24:47Speaker 1: couple things. One, he's kind of quiet, but we don't
- 24:50Speaker 1: know a lot about him. There's not a whole lot
- 24:52Speaker 1: of storytelling with him. The thing that sucks about boxing
- 24:56Speaker 1: not being on HBO or Showtime like it was 15
- 25:01Speaker 1: years ago, 10 years ago, there's no all-access. There's no
- 25:03Speaker 1: 24-7 where there's storytelling involved. The one really good thing
- 25:07Speaker 1: about 24-7 is there was storytelling. You got to learn
- 25:10Speaker 1: about boxers. So if they were on multiple cards or
- 25:14Speaker 1: they did multiple fights with HBO, you got to learn
- 25:17Speaker 1: more and more about the boxer because let's say they
- 25:19Speaker 1: fought someone bigger than them the first time or the
- 25:21Speaker 1: second time. That's not their main show. So you get
- 25:24Speaker 1: to learn more and more about them. We don't have
- 25:25Speaker 1: any storytelling in boxing anymore. That's the biggest thing that's missing.
- 25:28Speaker 1: We don't know enough about these guys to be able
- 25:30Speaker 1: to be intrigued enough.
- 25:31Speaker 2: That's the problem.
- 25:33Speaker 3: Yeah, no, I understand that. I definitely have seen that
- 25:35Speaker 3: as well. And just, you know, to be perfectly clear
- 25:39Speaker 3: for the record, because last time I said Ryan Garcia,
- 25:41Speaker 3: I expected Ryan Garcia to lose. You know, his fans
- 25:43Speaker 3: are just like kicking my ass. They're beating my ass
- 25:46Speaker 3: in the QRTs on social media. And, you know, I'm
- 25:49Speaker 3: not going to say I'm not going to say all
- 25:51Speaker 3: of it was unfair.
- 25:52Speaker 4: You know, they like their guy. Not all of them
- 25:54Speaker 4: were hateful or scumbags or anything like that.
- 25:56Speaker 3: Some were little pieces of shit, but whatever. Thankfully, the
- 25:58Speaker 3: majority were just.
- 25:59Speaker 4: Like, suck to suck, bro. You got it wrong, which
- 26:03Speaker 4: I did.
- 26:04Speaker 3: Um, but Hey, let's be clear. I want Ryan to
- 26:06Speaker 3: be a big star. Cause like I said, we need it.
- 26:08Speaker 3: And I want a big fight on September in September
- 26:13Speaker 3: and on Cinco de Mayo. Uh, I want a consistent
- 26:16Speaker 3: star that we can look up to, uh, or look
- 26:17Speaker 3: forward to rather. And it's Ryan's date to lose because
- 26:21Speaker 3: he's got the mechanism behind him. You know, uh, uh,
- 26:25Speaker 3: Dana White's Conor Bennett's with Dana White, Dana White's in, uh,
- 26:28Speaker 3: in with the Saudis and the Saudis are, you know,
- 26:30Speaker 3: the big moneymakers, right? You cannot fuck this up. Uh,
- 26:34Speaker 3: You have to dominate. You have to look great. You
- 26:35Speaker 3: have to put on an exciting fight. And yeah, if
- 26:38Speaker 3: he becomes the, you know, the guy for a while
- 26:41Speaker 3: fighting in September or Cinco.
- 26:42Speaker 4: Or both, like I'm cool with it. I'm going to
- 26:44Speaker 4: be there. I'm going to be excited to watch it,
- 26:45Speaker 4: to watch a boxing match on those weekends.
- 26:48Speaker 3: But I'm really quoting you of all things that the
- 26:51Speaker 3: fighters that show up on these weekends, they're winners and
- 26:55Speaker 3: they dominate and they have to live up to that.
- 26:58Speaker 4: And another thing too.
- 26:59Speaker 1: I want to love you real quick, but winning a
- 27:02Speaker 1: certain way, It's not winning a billion amount of cards.
- 27:06Speaker 1: It's putting on a show. That's the thing. People don't
- 27:09Speaker 1: want to watch boring fights when they travel to a fight.
- 27:12Speaker 1: They want to be entertained. And the one thing about Canelo,
- 27:15Speaker 1: whether you love him, hate him, indifferent, whatever, is most
- 27:19Speaker 1: of the times his fights are entertaining. Either he puts
- 27:21Speaker 1: them on their back or he had a lot of
- 27:23Speaker 1: power punches. It was a good fight to watch. So
- 27:27Speaker 1: that's a big thing.
- 27:28Speaker 2: People want to be entertained. Not necessarily.
- 27:31Speaker 1: watch a boring fighter, watch a fight with very low
- 27:34Speaker 1: connecting punches.
- 27:35Speaker 2: That's the thing. 100%.
- 27:37Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 27:37Speaker 3: It's really, really interesting to see what happens with these
- 27:41Speaker 3: particular dates because, okay, let's say, let's say.
- 27:44Speaker 4: Ryan's the guy and he just doesn't live.
- 27:46Speaker 3: Up to being, you know, the Cinco de Mayo fighter,
- 27:48Speaker 3: the September fighter, for whatever reason, hypothetically speaking, those dates
- 27:52Speaker 3: are not going to go, you know, unfilled with fights.
- 27:55Speaker 3: They're going to try to find either him or somebody
- 27:58Speaker 3: else and they're going to find it. Let's let's say
- 28:00Speaker 3: let's say this.
- 28:01Speaker 4: Let's say in another few years, five years, whatever.
- 28:03Speaker 3: Emiliano Vargas is the next big guy that takes both
- 28:07Speaker 3: those states. He's the next the face of Mexican face
- 28:09Speaker 3: of boxing, et cetera, et cetera.
- 28:11Speaker 4: He's not there yet. He's just not.
- 28:12Speaker 3: You know, he's still up and coming and, you know,
- 28:14Speaker 3: he's doing great and he's got a good future ahead
- 28:16Speaker 3: of him based on what we've seen. But between now
- 28:19Speaker 3: and when Emiliano Vargas gets to there. they're going to
- 28:23Speaker 3: try to prop up whoever they can.
- 28:24Speaker 4: After Canelo retires. And it's, it feels to me like
- 28:27Speaker 4: it could just be a shit show.
- 28:28Speaker 3: It could backfire, you know, you could back the wrong
- 28:30Speaker 3: horse fights are less exciting.
- 28:32Speaker 4: And that's just not good for the sport overall.
- 28:34Speaker 3: You know, we need these dates to, to rile up
