- [warm] This is NewsCard Daily for Sunday January 11, 2026 ... the biggest stories from Australia and around the world in just minutes. — — [serious] We begin in Victoria... where a state of disaster is in force as bushfires rage across the state. Authorities are battling at least 10 major fire fronts... with conditions described as the worst since Black Summer. More than a hundred structures are already destroyed... and that toll is expected to rise as damage assessments continue. Power is out to thousands... roads are cut... and communities are spending another anxious night in relief centres. One man in his 60s is confirmed dead. Firefighters warn the blazes could burn for weeks... and every Victorian is being urged to stay alert... have a plan... and follow evacuation orders quickly. — — [serious] In Canberra... the federal government is under pressure over its bushfire response and climate policy. Emergency funding is being fast‑tracked to Victoria... including Defence support and disaster recovery payments for affected families and small businesses. But crossbench MPs and some within Labor’s own ranks say Australia needs a more ambitious plan to cut emissions and prepare communities for a hotter, drier future. Expect renewed debate over hazard reduction, disaster resilience funding... and whether current targets are enough as extreme weather becomes more frequent. For many Australians... the question is not just how we fight this fire season... but how we prevent the next one from being even worse. — — [serious] In Queensland... attention turns to the tropics where a developing system off the north coast is expected to strengthen... with the potential to reach category two cyclone intensity. Communities along the North Queensland coast are being urged to secure properties and stock up on essentials... with heavy rain, damaging winds and storm tides possible over coming days. Emergency services are warning that saturated ground and strong gusts could bring down trees and powerlines. For farmers and townships still recovering from previous floods... another major weather event could be a serious setback... even as inland regions welcome the prospect of some rain. — — [serious] In New South Wales... the heat is relentless. Sydney and much of the state’s east are sweltering through temperatures in the mid‑40s... pushing power demand to near record levels. Health authorities are urging people to stay hydrated... check on elderly neighbours... and keep children and pets out of the sun during the hottest parts of the day. There are also concerns for rough sleepers and those in poorly insulated housing... who feel the impacts of extreme heat first and hardest. For many households already struggling with power bills... keeping the air con on isn’t just a comfort question... it’s a cost‑of‑living calculation. — — [urgent] Overseas in the United States... fresh controversy over immigration enforcement after a fatal shooting by a federal agent in Minneapolis. Newly released vision shows the moments before an Immigration and Customs Enforcement officer shot and killed a 37‑year‑old mother during an attempted arrest. The footage is sparking protests and renewed scrutiny of US immigration tactics and police use of force. For Australia... it revives comparisons with our own border policies and detention practices... and how democracies balance community safety... human rights... and the treatment of migrants and asylum seekers. — — [serious] In Europe... energy and security are back in the spotlight as leaders meet to discuss support for Ukraine and how to shield households from ongoing price shocks. Governments are weighing new military aid packages alongside measures to stabilise gas and electricity costs... which remain volatile after years of conflict and supply disruption. For Australia... decisions in Europe flow through to global energy prices... influencing what we pay at the bowser and on power bills. The talks also shape demand for Australian LNG and critical minerals... and underline how distant conflicts can hit hip pockets here at home. — — [warm] That’s NewsCard Daily.
