- Sean Graver: You made a significant mistake at work, maybe recently, maybe it's still unfolding, but this is the kind that has consequences. Maybe it involves other people, and you can't just quickly fix it and move on. So before you spiral out on this, let's bring it to God. Now in Micah 7:8, it reads Do not gloat over me, my enemy, though I have fallen, I will rise. Though I sit in darkness, the Lord will be my light. Now this is one of the most defiant verses in all of Scripture, but not defiant towards God, defiant toward defeat, though I have fallen, and the writer isn't pretending they haven't, I will rise. So the fall is acknowledged, the conclusion is refused, and the reason is that the Lord will be my light. Not my own recovery efforts, not my ability to fix it, but him, the Lord. Now here's what a big mistake at work tends to do: it activates shame. And shame wants to either hide or perform. So either you go quiet and you try to minimize the damage invisibly, or you overcompensate with frantic effort to prove you're still worth keeping around. But both of those responses come from the same place, and that is the Fear that this mis mistake defines you. Well, it doesn't. But you have to actually believe that to act like it. I mean, the path forward from a significant mistake has a few consistent elements. You know, own it fully, not partially, not with qualifiers. Understand what went wrong honestly enough to prevent a repeat, and then make it right wherever you can. And then, and this is the part that takes real faith, stop. Carrying it beyond that. You've fallen. The question isn't whether that happened. The question is whether you believe you will rise. But not because you deserve to, but because the Lord is your light in the dark place. And that light doesn't just go out because you made a mistake. You need proof? Well, how about consider King David? ⁓ how about Gideon? Who can forget Samson? When you make a mistake, pray like this. God, I'm in a dark place right now because of something I did wrong, and I need you to be my light in it. Because I can't manufacture my way out of this one on my own. So help me to own this fully, to not minimize it or deflect it or let shame make me hide. Help me to make it right wherever I can, and then help me to actually let it go. And not because it doesn't matter, but Because your grace is bigger than my worst mistake. I have fallen, but I will rise, and not just because I'm resilient enough, it's because you are faithful enough. So be my light today, Lord. In Jesus' name I pray. Amen. Now go make today count.
