- 0:01Speaker 1: Welcome to Real Talk with Mike D. All right. Welcome
- 0:06Speaker 1: back to Real Talk with Mike D. I am Mike D.
- 0:10Speaker 1: Thank you for listening. Thank you for being here. And
- 0:12Speaker 1: as always, I appreciate your time. Today, I want to
- 0:16Speaker 1: talk about something that means more to me than money,
- 0:19Speaker 1: more than possessions, more than success, and more than anything
- 0:23Speaker 1: you can buy in a store. Today, we're talking about
- 0:27Speaker 1: family and why family is important. and why family should
- 0:32Speaker 1: be cherished. Because when everything else is stripped away, when
- 0:37Speaker 1: the job is over, and the bills are paid, or
- 0:39Speaker 1: maybe they're not paid, because let's be honest, sometimes they aren't.
- 0:43Speaker 1: When the house is quiet, and the day is finally done,
- 0:46Speaker 1: family is everything. And I don't mean that family is
- 0:51Speaker 1: always perfect, because let's be real, they're not. Family can
- 0:56Speaker 1: drive you absolutely crazy, they can make you laugh, They
- 0:59Speaker 1: can even make you cry. They can make you angry.
- 1:03Speaker 1: Sometimes they can make you want to move to another state.
- 1:07Speaker 1: But at the end of the day, family is family.
- 1:11Speaker 1: And there's something special about knowing that there are people
- 1:13Speaker 1: in this world who know where you've come from. They
- 1:18Speaker 1: know your story. They've seen your good days. They've seen
- 1:21Speaker 1: your bad days. They've seen you succeed. They've seen you
- 1:25Speaker 1: fall flat on your face. And hopefully, they're still standing
- 1:28Speaker 1: there when you get back up. Think about the moments
- 1:31Speaker 1: you remember most in your life. A lot of times
- 1:34Speaker 1: they're not the expensive things. They're not the fancy cars.
- 1:38Speaker 1: They're not the biggest paycheck you've ever received. They're the
- 1:41Speaker 1: little moments. Sitting around the kitchen table, having dinner together,
- 1:46Speaker 1: going on vacation, watching a football game, laughing about something stupid.
- 1:52Speaker 1: Taking a road trip, celebrating a birthday. Maybe it's Christmas
- 1:56Speaker 1: morning or Thanksgiving dinner. Or maybe just sitting on the
- 2:00Speaker 1: porch talking about life. Those are the moments that stick
- 2:04Speaker 1: with us. And sometimes we don't realize how important those
- 2:07Speaker 1: moments are until years later. You might look back and think, man,
- 2:12Speaker 1: I wish I could go back to that day. Maybe
- 2:15Speaker 1: it was a day when your kids were little. Maybe
- 2:17Speaker 1: it was a family member who was still there. Maybe
- 2:20Speaker 1: it was a time when everybody was together. Because here's
- 2:24Speaker 1: the thing about life. You don't get those moments back.
- 2:28Speaker 1: That's why we have to appreciate them while we're living them.
- 2:32Speaker 1: We get so busy. We're working. We're paying bills. We're
- 2:35Speaker 1: dealing with problems. We're worried about tomorrow. We're looking at
- 2:38Speaker 1: our phones. We're scrolling through social media. We're constantly thinking
- 2:42Speaker 1: about what's next. And sometimes we forget to appreciate what's
- 2:46Speaker 1: right in front of us. Your family doesn't need you
- 2:49Speaker 1: to be perfect. They don't need you to have all
- 2:51Speaker 1: the answers. They just need you to have a million dollars. Psych!
- 2:56Speaker 1: They don't need you to have a million dollars. Sometimes
- 3:00Speaker 1: they just need you. Your time, your attention, your phone
- 3:05Speaker 1: put down on the table, your arms around them, your
- 3:07Speaker 1: voice saying, I love you. Those three words can mean
- 3:12Speaker 1: more than anything. And here's something I've learned. Don't wait
- 3:16Speaker 1: for a special occasion to tell someone you love them.
- 3:20Speaker 1: Don't wait for Christmas. Don't wait for a birthday. Don't
- 3:23Speaker 1: wait until something happens. Tell them today. Call your mother,
- 3:27Speaker 1: call your father, call your brother and sister, call your kids.
- 3:31Speaker 1: Call whoever you consider family and just say, hey, I
- 3:35Speaker 1: was thinking about you. You never know how much that
- 3:38Speaker 1: might mean to someone. Because life can change in a second.
- 3:42Speaker 1: One phone call can change everything. And suddenly the things
- 3:45Speaker 1: you thought were important aren't important anymore. The argument you
- 3:49Speaker 1: had doesn't matter. The money doesn't matter. The stupid disagreement
- 3:54Speaker 1: doesn't matter either. What matters is the people you love
- 3:57Speaker 1: are okay. That's family. Now, I know not everybody has
- 4:02Speaker 1: the perfect family. And I want to acknowledge that. Some
- 4:06Speaker 1: people have families that are complicated. Some people have been
- 4:09Speaker 1: hurt by family. Some people have lost family members. And
- 4:13Speaker 1: some people have families that are separated. And some people
- 4:16Speaker 1: have created their own family through friendships and relationships. And
- 4:19Speaker 1: that's okay, too. Because family isn't always about blood. Sometimes
- 4:25Speaker 1: family is the person who shows up. It's the person
- 4:28Speaker 1: who answers the phone at two in the morning. It's
- 4:31Speaker 1: the person who sits beside you when you're having the
- 4:33Speaker 1: worst day of your life. It's the person who says,
- 4:37Speaker 1: don't worry, we'll figure this out. That's family. It's loyalty.
- 4:41Speaker 1: It's love. It's being there. And sometimes the strongest families
- 4:45Speaker 1: aren't the ones that never have problems. They're the ones
- 4:48Speaker 1: that go through problems and still choose each other. Because
- 4:52Speaker 1: every family has disagreements. Every family has misunderstandings. Every family
- 4:57Speaker 1: has moments when somebody says something they shouldn't have said.
- 5:00Speaker 1: That's life. But sometimes you have to put your pride aside.
- 5:06Speaker 1: Sometimes you have to be the bigger person. Sometimes you
- 5:08Speaker 1: have to say, I'm sorry. And sometimes you have to say,
- 5:12Speaker 1: I forgive you. Because holding on to anger for years
- 5:15Speaker 1: doesn't hurt the other person nearly as much as it
- 5:18Speaker 1: hurts you. Life is too short. We don't know how
- 5:22Speaker 1: much time we have left. So love people while they're here.
- 5:26Speaker 1: Appreciate people while they're here. Make memories while they're here.
- 5:31Speaker 1: Take the pictures, even if you hate taking pictures. Take
- 5:35Speaker 1: the picture. Because someday that picture might be one of
- 5:39Speaker 1: the most valuable things you own. You might look at
- 5:42Speaker 1: it years from now and hear the person's voice in
- 5:44Speaker 1: your head. You'll remember the way they laughed. You'll remember
- 5:48Speaker 1: the way they smiled. You'll remember the crazy things they
- 5:51Speaker 1: used to say, and you'll realize those were the good
- 5:55Speaker 1: old days. But here's the beautiful part. You don't have
- 5:59Speaker 1: to wait until they're gone to realize it. You can
- 6:02Speaker 1: appreciate the good old days while you're living them. So tonight, tomorrow,
- 6:07Speaker 1: or whenever you listen to this podcast, take a minute.
- 6:10Speaker 1: Look around. Look at your family. Look at the people
- 6:13Speaker 1: who are still here, and don't take them for granted.
- 6:16Speaker 1: If your kids are around, hug them. If your parents
- 6:19Speaker 1: are still around, call them. If your siblings are around,
- 6:23Speaker 1: check on them. If you've got somebody in your life
- 6:26Speaker 1: who has always been there for you, tell them what
- 6:28Speaker 1: they mean to you because sometimes we assume people know,
- 6:32Speaker 1: but they don't. Tell them, life is about how much
- 6:36Speaker 1: stuff you accumulate. It's about the people you share with
- 6:40Speaker 1: your life. You can have the biggest house in the neighborhood.
- 6:43Speaker 1: You can drive the nicest car. You can have money
- 6:46Speaker 1: in the bank. But if you have nobody to share
- 6:49Speaker 1: your life with, what does any of it really mean?
- 6:54Speaker 1: Give me a small house filled with your laughter over
- 6:56Speaker 1: a mansion filled with loneliness. Give me a backyard barbecue
- 7:00Speaker 1: with family over a fancy restaurant where nobody knows my name.
- 7:04Speaker 1: Give me a simple evening sitting around talking with people
- 7:07Speaker 1: I love. That's the good stuff. That's what life is about.
- 7:11Speaker 1: And someday, when we're old and looking back at our lives,
- 7:14Speaker 1: I don't think we're going to wish we worked another
- 7:16Speaker 1: hundred hours. I know I don't. I don't think we're
- 7:20Speaker 1: going to wish we bought another television. Eh, maybe. I
- 7:25Speaker 1: don't think we're going to wish we spent more time
- 7:27Speaker 1: worrying about what other people thought about us. Absolutely not.
- 7:31Speaker 1: We're going to remember the people. We're going to remember
- 7:34Speaker 1: the hugs, the laughs, the conversations, the holidays, the vacations,
- 7:38Speaker 1: the birthdays, the good times, and even, yes, even the
- 7:42Speaker 1: hard times. Because sometimes the hard times are what brings
- 7:45Speaker 1: families closer together. We go through something difficult together and
- 7:49Speaker 1: you realize we're going to get through this. That's powerful.
- 7:54Speaker 1: That's what family does. Family doesn't necessarily make the storm disappear.
- 7:59Speaker 1: Sometimes family simply stands beside you until the storm passes.
- 8:03Speaker 1: And that's enough. So if you're listening to me today
- 8:06Speaker 1: and you've got somebody in your family you're not talking to,
- 8:09Speaker 1: maybe it's time to reach out. Maybe you don't even
- 8:12Speaker 1: have to solve everything today. Just open the door. Send
- 8:16Speaker 1: the text. Make the call. Say hello. Because life is
- 8:21Speaker 1: too short to let years go by because of pride.
- 8:24Speaker 1: And if you're lucky enough to have a family that's close,
- 8:27Speaker 1: cherish it, protect it, make time for it. Because family
- 8:32Speaker 1: isn't something you should only think about when there's a crisis.
- 8:36Speaker 1: Family should be part of your everyday life. And remember,
- 8:39Speaker 1: you don't have to be rich to give your family
- 8:41Speaker 1: something valuable. Give them your time. Give them your love.
- 8:46Speaker 1: Give them your attention. Give them memories. Those things are priceless.
- 8:52Speaker 1: Absolutely priceless. And before I wrap this up, I want
- 8:57Speaker 1: you to remember one thing. People may forget what you
- 9:01Speaker 1: bought them. They may forget what you gave them. But
- 9:05Speaker 1: they'll remember how you made them feel. So make your
- 9:09Speaker 1: family feel loved. Make them feel important. Make them feel
- 9:15Speaker 1: like they matter because they do. And if nobody has
- 9:19Speaker 1: told you lately, I'm telling you right now, your family matters.
- 9:25Speaker 1: Your loved one matters. And you matter too. So hug somebody,
- 9:30Speaker 1: make that phone call, sit down at the dinner table,
- 9:33Speaker 1: laugh a little more, forgive a little quicker, and love
- 9:38Speaker 1: a little harder. Because at the end of the day,
- 9:40Speaker 1: family is everything. You know, I lost my mom and
- 9:47Speaker 1: dad many years ago. And I would give anything to
- 9:50Speaker 1: be able to hug, kiss, tell them how much I
- 9:54Speaker 1: love them. Just spend more time with them. If you
- 10:01Speaker 1: have family here and friends, most importantly, if you have
- 10:05Speaker 1: your parents here, tell them how much you love them.
- 10:08Speaker 1: Tell them how much you miss them and spend time
- 10:13Speaker 1: with them. Anyhow, this has been Real Talk with Mike D.
- 10:18Speaker 1: And remember, Say what you mean, mean what you say,
- 10:21Speaker 1: and always keep it real. And I'll see you on
- 10:26Speaker 1: the next one.
