- 1:13Speaker 1: Enjoy guys, Happy summer.
- 1:15Speaker 4: Bye.
- 1:29Speaker 3: All right, hello, and welcome to No Dribble, the podcast
- 1:31Speaker 3: where we talk about netball, but we talk about a
- 1:33Speaker 3: whole lot more.
- 1:34Speaker 4: Besides. My name is Carolyn Swimwell, and.
- 1:36Speaker 3: I am beside myself with excitement at this very special episode.
- 1:40Speaker 4: I'm joined as always by.
- 1:43Speaker 1: Kath Cox, and I'd like to be excited, but I
- 1:45Speaker 1: don't know who we're talking to.
- 1:47Speaker 4: It's you.
- 1:49Speaker 2: Barely sit still, George.
- 1:52Speaker 4: And I'm also joined from.
- 1:54Speaker 5: Far away, far away, back in my caravan, which is
- 1:58Speaker 5: my happy place, Liz Ellos.
- 2:00Speaker 4: LS welcome, thank you.
- 2:01Speaker 3: So I do have a very special guest this week,
- 2:03Speaker 3: and this is a current legend of the game. So
- 2:07Speaker 3: I feel like that's a real leap into the future
- 2:09Speaker 3: for us here at Nadribble. Like it's fine to have
- 2:12Speaker 3: some has beens, I mean, former legends of the game,
- 2:15Speaker 3: some evergreen legends of the game, but we also have
- 2:17Speaker 3: a current legend of the game. So kat As is
- 2:19Speaker 3: our wont okay, I have blindfolded you with the gentle
- 2:24Speaker 3: soft velvet mask that I.
- 2:26Speaker 1: Don't think the handcuffs were necessarily but it's.
- 2:29Speaker 4: Just part of my dream. Okay.
- 2:32Speaker 3: So our special guest today currently plays center wing attack
- 2:36Speaker 3: for choice. Played gold offense when she was younger. So there,
- 2:40Speaker 3: I've given you a clue.
- 2:41Speaker 1: It's to she okay. And she was tall when she
- 2:45Speaker 1: was younger, and everyone else.
- 2:49Speaker 4: Maybe everyone else I never caught up.
- 2:51Speaker 3: She is one hundred and seventy four centimeters tall, so
- 2:53Speaker 3: I will point out that he's also still tall, but
- 2:56Speaker 3: just not by your.
- 2:56Speaker 1: Stand they's not freaky all. It's not goal circle tall.
- 3:00Speaker 4: It's not goal circle to all.
- 3:01Speaker 1: That's very good.
- 3:02Speaker 3: She has been a diamond, but I'm not going to
- 3:04Speaker 3: tell you her diamond number because that would make it
- 3:07Speaker 3: too easy for you. Do you have any guesses at
- 3:09Speaker 3: this stage?
- 3:09Speaker 4: All right?
- 3:10Speaker 3: She started her career with the Thunderbirds, playing with the
- 3:14Speaker 3: Thunderbirds from twenty eleven to twenty sixteen. Oh that's not Georgie,
- 3:19Speaker 3: at which point she saw the light and joined the Swifts.
- 3:23Speaker 3: She has a leadership role with the Swift.
- 3:26Speaker 1: Oh. Well, hang on, then that's now is a deal?
- 3:30Speaker 1: Hang on, I can't think I've got it all right?
- 3:34Speaker 1: Her drink of choice, I always get it on this.
- 3:36Speaker 4: Here's a glass of champagne.
- 3:38Speaker 1: Oh well that's Maddy Prad is Maddie Prey.
- 3:42Speaker 2: I'm so sorry. I wish you could have got Georgie
- 3:44Speaker 2: for you.
- 3:45Speaker 1: Yeah, that's okay. Oh she'll keep We'll do her another week.
- 3:48Speaker 2: Welcome, thank you, thank you knowing me.
- 3:50Speaker 4: Oh, thank you so much for coming. This is very exciting.
- 3:53Speaker 3: And I've already told Maddie that I have my daughter
- 3:54Speaker 3: swift Jumper under the table, so I will be getting her.
- 3:56Speaker 4: To sign it before we leave.
- 3:58Speaker 3: And this is the most excited I have been in
- 4:01Speaker 3: the months that we have been doing this podcast.
- 4:04Speaker 2: I want to hope I live up to the expectations
- 4:06Speaker 2: I do too.
- 4:08Speaker 1: Do you take offense to that or is it just
- 4:10Speaker 1: me well that she's most excited about having Maddie.
- 4:13Speaker 4: He's not us.
- 4:15Speaker 5: I'm just used to Carol and being offensive, so I'm
- 4:17Speaker 5: sort of actually, do you know what, I didn't even
- 4:19Speaker 5: register that, just because I'm just so used to it,
- 4:22Speaker 5: and also because.
- 4:23Speaker 4: I'm really excited about having Maddie too.
- 4:25Speaker 5: She's not only you know, my one of my favorites.
- 4:28Speaker 5: She's a bit of a family favorite. Is everyone loves Maddie.
- 4:31Speaker 3: Well, she made your life a whole lot easier with
- 4:33Speaker 3: book Week, didn't she.
- 4:35Speaker 2: She did?
- 4:35Speaker 5: So, you know, with Grace on the Court, Mattie's first
- 4:37Speaker 5: novel that Evelyn loved. Then suddenly Evelyn could go to
- 4:40Speaker 5: book Week dress as a netball player and put in
- 4:43Speaker 5: every less effort than I normally do.
- 4:45Speaker 4: So that was perfect.
- 4:46Speaker 1: Can we just say something on that then, So we've
- 4:48Speaker 1: got one extra person in the room now, Ryan, and
- 4:51Speaker 1: yet I'm still the only one that hasn't written a book.
- 4:54Speaker 5: Yeah, yeah, thanks, Yeah, possibly also cats Aroine the only
- 5:00Speaker 5: one who hasn't read a book Women's Day.
- 5:04Speaker 1: Hey, I have read Slash's book. Thank you very much, Slash. Look,
- 5:09Speaker 1: something's going to keep my attention. It's got to be good.
- 5:12Speaker 2: It's got to be Slash.
- 5:13Speaker 1: It's got to be Slash. Did you choose that because
- 5:16Speaker 1: he's a Gunner's rock starts? They have got some great stories.
- 5:19Speaker 1: I'm sure Grace on the Court is really a bit
- 5:22Speaker 1: of Slash as well.
- 5:23Speaker 2: Yeah, anyway, very similar demographic.
- 5:26Speaker 6: Can we talk about that though, because there's another one,
- 5:28Speaker 6: another one there is and I must admit, well, I
- 5:30Speaker 6: was writing book number three Evelyn. Evelyn was on my
- 5:33Speaker 6: shoulder because I just kept thinking about how traumatized she
- 5:36Speaker 6: was from Grace on the Court too, Grace Back on
- 5:38Speaker 6: Court because there was a kissing scene. So I don't
- 5:41Speaker 6: know how Evelyn's older now, So I hope that by
- 5:44Speaker 6: book three there might be one or two more kisses.
- 5:46Speaker 6: But every time I'm writing, I'm like, would Evelyn like this?
- 5:49Speaker 6: Would Evelyn like this? Liza might have to be the
- 5:52Speaker 6: same as I actually got Evelyn to read an advanced
- 5:55Speaker 6: copee of Grace Back on Court, so she might need
- 5:57Speaker 6: to read an advanced copy of Grace.
- 5:59Speaker 2: Off the Court. That's spoiler for you. That's what I
- 6:01Speaker 2: think it'll be called.
- 6:02Speaker 4: So you're jk rowling this and take a bit older
- 6:05Speaker 4: with your readers.
- 6:06Speaker 6: Yes, well, that that's what I've sort of struggled with
- 6:08Speaker 6: because there has been a little bit of a gap
- 6:10Speaker 6: between the second and the third, and obviously the readers
- 6:12Speaker 6: are getting older, so you sort of want Grace to
- 6:14Speaker 6: get older, but you also don't want it to get
- 6:16Speaker 6: too older because then you're entering a bit of white
- 6:18Speaker 6: territory and.
- 6:19Speaker 4: Stuff like that.
- 6:20Speaker 6: It's a bit too I I I'd love to write
- 6:22Speaker 6: about you know, it's some exciting things, but I think
- 6:24Speaker 6: for now we've got to stick to the PG version
- 6:26Speaker 6: of Grace.
- 6:26Speaker 1: So she gets to second base though in the third book, well.
- 6:30Speaker 2: Obviously you haven't read a.
- 6:33Speaker 5: Spoil of it.
- 6:34Speaker 6: Yes, there is a little bit of a kissing scene
- 6:36Speaker 6: and you had to wait, you know, right to.
- 6:38Speaker 4: The second.
- 6:40Speaker 6: Shades of that's what, that's what the adult version you
- 6:44Speaker 6: might read that one.
- 6:49Speaker 1: Second base is, well, isn't kissing first base?
- 6:52Speaker 6: I'll just yeah, Grace only gets your first base. Okay,
- 6:54Speaker 6: unless I've got my bass.
- 6:56Speaker 4: I'm wondering what first base is if kissing is second?
- 6:59Speaker 1: But why actually was just assuming that in the third
- 7:02Speaker 1: one because she was she gets not second.
- 7:05Speaker 6: That might be the spin off series.
- 7:08Speaker 5: Also, like chest base, second base, it's very baseball. I
- 7:11Speaker 5: think we need to find any So.
- 7:12Speaker 4: Like the trans.
- 7:17Speaker 2: When you get to the goal.
- 7:21Speaker 4: Circle, bow let's.
- 7:23Speaker 6: It might be the material for cats in first book
- 7:25Speaker 6: for right getting to the trans.
- 7:30Speaker 1: Shut it all, you god, Okay, so it's out for Christmas.
- 7:35Speaker 1: This is important?
- 7:35Speaker 6: Well I hope so no, no, so it's I'm probably
- 7:38Speaker 6: jumping the gun a little bit here. I literally finished
- 7:40Speaker 6: writing about a week ago, so it's currently in the
- 7:42Speaker 6: hands of my mother, who is always the first person
- 7:45Speaker 6: that will read it, so I'm waiting for her feedback.
- 7:47Speaker 1: She's up to about it because we will release this
- 7:49Speaker 1: though in a little while. Do you want to do
- 7:51Speaker 1: a Christmas plug?
- 7:52Speaker 2: Do you think it'll make it? I think the publishing
- 7:54Speaker 2: world takes too long?
- 7:55Speaker 1: Okay, all right?
- 7:56Speaker 6: Unfortunately, Okay, So hopefully you'll be out Buddies next yeah season, Yeah,
- 8:02Speaker 6: twenty twenty five. Maybe we can pre order it at Christmas,
- 8:05Speaker 6: but it depends how long the publishing process takes.
- 8:07Speaker 1: Okay, which is frustrating. So what's your off season look
- 8:10Speaker 1: like then?
- 8:11Speaker 6: Obviously writing, yes, what, I've not really been here at all.
- 8:14Speaker 6: I pretty much the day after the Gala dinner, I
- 8:17Speaker 6: flew over to the UK. My partner was playing cricket
- 8:19Speaker 6: over there, so met him in London and then we
- 8:21Speaker 6: had about two and a half three weeks of travel.
- 8:23Speaker 6: We got to go to the Olympics and then did
- 8:25Speaker 6: about two weeks in Italy and then I've been living
- 8:28Speaker 6: the life of a wag, which has actually been really nice.
- 8:30Speaker 2: It's been very relaxing.
- 8:32Speaker 6: I've just been able to enjoy life, getting coffees, go
- 8:35Speaker 6: to the gym and watching a bit of cricket, which
- 8:37Speaker 6: probably was the only downfall to the whole time, because
- 8:40Speaker 6: cricket is a very, very long and boring sport. But
- 8:43Speaker 6: I was very enjoyed, I must admit I say that,
- 8:45Speaker 6: but I'm actually a bit of a tragic if I
- 8:47Speaker 6: can't sit there all day and enjoy it.
- 8:48Speaker 1: But so is he playing here though he's back.
- 8:51Speaker 6: Yes, so he did sort of a four month stint.
- 8:53Speaker 6: He was playing for Sussex over in the county cricket.
- 8:55Speaker 4: And then that's your accent. Did you pick one up?
- 8:58Speaker 1: Can you?
- 8:58Speaker 6: Well? I thought some people actually, because I'm South Australian,
- 9:01Speaker 6: you say the chance and dance, and a few people
- 9:03Speaker 6: thought I maybe had a little bit of a twinge.
- 9:05Speaker 6: But then I start talking like I normally do and
- 9:07Speaker 6: they think I'm an Australian Bergen.
- 9:09Speaker 2: So yeah.
- 9:10Speaker 6: Whereas and Daniel my parta, he's from Cara, so he's
- 9:13Speaker 6: very very country. So he even in Italy and I'm
- 9:16Speaker 6: like trying to get him say choo and bonjon and
- 9:17Speaker 6: he's going get a mate, just have a beer. I
- 9:20Speaker 6: was like, we can try and you know, maybe get
- 9:21Speaker 6: into the culture here, but that didn't work.
- 9:24Speaker 1: Oh so your whole summer is going to be watching Creeker.
- 9:27Speaker 2: Yeah, it just doesn't stop.
- 9:28Speaker 6: He literally got back in two days later started again,
- 9:30Speaker 6: So it's it's NonStop.
- 9:32Speaker 2: It's just the amount they play.
- 9:34Speaker 6: I mean, I still think Nepul should play a lot more,
- 9:36Speaker 6: but cricket is the other end of the extreme and
- 9:38Speaker 6: that he just plays for twelve months straight because they
- 9:40Speaker 6: can sort of play here, there and everywhere.
- 9:42Speaker 1: Well, speaking of playing a lot more, how much time
- 9:44Speaker 1: off did you actually have?
- 9:46Speaker 6: Well, this off season has probably been the most I've
- 9:48Speaker 6: ever had in my entire career because I've sort of
- 9:51Speaker 6: always been in either underage programs or diamonds programs and
- 9:54Speaker 6: things like that. Whereas last season I had a lot
- 9:56Speaker 6: of injury issues with old knees and things like that,
- 9:58Speaker 6: so I kind of got told to pretty much not
- 10:01Speaker 6: run for potentially three months now, sit down and watch cricket.
- 10:04Speaker 6: So I was in the gym and you know, doing
- 10:06Speaker 6: other things. But it was probably the most I actually
- 10:09Speaker 6: had away from anything sort of netball related, which mentally
- 10:12Speaker 6: was very refreshing because last season was a pretty tough
- 10:15Speaker 6: season in all aspects, so I think it was very needed.
- 10:17Speaker 6: But yeah, I've had a lot of relaxing. I've probably
- 10:20Speaker 6: spent the first month just nearly doing nothing, and then
- 10:22Speaker 6: the last month or so I got into a bit
- 10:24Speaker 6: more of a routine.
- 10:25Speaker 4: The boss wants to ask you a question. She's putting
- 10:27Speaker 4: it high.
- 10:27Speaker 5: I put my hand up certain so we don't talk
- 10:30Speaker 5: over each other. It's good podcast atdiquate. So Maddie, I'm interesting. Yeah,
- 10:34Speaker 5: I say, you've got your old knees. I always think
- 10:36Speaker 5: of you as being like twenty two, because that's you know,
- 10:39Speaker 5: that's that's what you are in my head. But you
- 10:42Speaker 5: know you're now having to manage these knees. What's the
- 10:44Speaker 5: prognosis for you for next season and then ongoing like
- 10:49Speaker 5: it as a matter of getting yourself right and then
- 10:50Speaker 5: you're good to go. Or is this something you'll have
- 10:52Speaker 5: to manage for the rest of your career.
- 10:54Speaker 2: Yeah, it's a bit of both.
- 10:56Speaker 6: It's something so I tore my menis because when I
- 10:58Speaker 6: was sixteen for the first time this is actually I
- 11:00Speaker 6: did an acl but that knees fire and this is
- 11:02Speaker 6: sort of the old grumbly knee that's just pretty much
- 11:05Speaker 6: got no cartilage left and is getting on the verge
- 11:07Speaker 6: of arthritis and things like that. So it's kind of
- 11:10Speaker 6: a case now of just managing it probably for the
- 11:12Speaker 6: rest of my career, but also having this break now
- 11:15Speaker 6: and having these few months of not running. And I
- 11:17Speaker 6: struggled a lot with swelling and things like that last year,
- 11:19Speaker 6: so I kind of use these last few months to
- 11:21Speaker 6: just completely get rid of any of that and then
- 11:24Speaker 6: hopefully go into this season with a little bit more
- 11:26Speaker 6: of a clean slate.
- 11:27Speaker 2: But a physia has been great, and I think.
- 11:28Speaker 6: It's sort of you see it in a lot of
- 11:30Speaker 6: the footy codes and that where the older players were
- 11:32Speaker 6: maybe have a bit of a modified training schedule and
- 11:34Speaker 6: things like that, and I think that that's coming more
- 11:36Speaker 6: into Netbule now with our physio. You know, last season,
- 11:39Speaker 6: I wouldn't do every court session, and I'm thirty.
- 11:42Speaker 2: I have been Colledpeterpan before because I won't grow up.
- 11:45Speaker 6: But I mean I started playing my first professional game,
- 11:47Speaker 6: I was sort of sixteen seventeen, so I probably have
- 11:50Speaker 6: been I think I turned seventeen by the time I
- 11:52Speaker 6: played My first was A and Z game, So I
- 11:55Speaker 6: always think of knees as dog years, So I've got
- 11:57Speaker 6: some pretty old old.
- 11:59Speaker 2: Thees, but yeah, hopefully.
- 12:01Speaker 6: I mean I tried a bit a PRP treatment and
- 12:03Speaker 6: a few different things, but.
- 12:05Speaker 2: I was a bit unlucky with what's pp. Oh.
- 12:07Speaker 6: Well it's traumatized me now, but it works for a
- 12:09Speaker 6: lot of people where they take your own blood. And
- 12:12Speaker 6: again this is me trying to speak in layman's terms,
- 12:15Speaker 6: but if they take your blood, I think they spin
- 12:16Speaker 6: it around, they inject it into whatever, you know, your
- 12:20Speaker 6: injury is, whether it's a joint or a tendon or
- 12:22Speaker 6: something like that, and it's meant to sort of stimulate
- 12:24Speaker 6: healing and kind of accelerate the recovery process. But I
- 12:29Speaker 6: was one of two percent of people that the second
- 12:31Speaker 6: time I went and got PIP this season, I got
- 12:33Speaker 6: a bad reaction because it.
- 12:35Speaker 1: Was your own blood.
- 12:36Speaker 6: Well actually it was a bad batch. So they had
- 12:38Speaker 6: a bad batch of Like what they go and spin
- 12:41Speaker 6: the blood in is like this machine thing, and it
- 12:44Speaker 6: had been transported over from you know, South Korea or something,
- 12:47Speaker 6: and the transit times had increased because of things that
- 12:51Speaker 6: were going on, and that meant that they reached a
- 12:53Speaker 6: temperature that was too high and they didn't realize it
- 12:55Speaker 6: until so I had this second lot of PIP.
- 12:57Speaker 2: And I was just in agony.
- 12:58Speaker 6: It blew up to the point I'll be able to
- 13:01Speaker 6: show you photos afterwards, but I don't know if anyone
- 13:02Speaker 6: would remember, but I had I missed one game during
- 13:04Speaker 6: the season and was walking around fine, and then the
- 13:07Speaker 6: second week I was on crutches and so I'd ended
- 13:09Speaker 6: up having this second lot of treatment, and they said
- 13:12Speaker 6: it was called like a pseudo infection, so it was
- 13:13Speaker 6: like your body thought you had an infection, and so
- 13:15Speaker 6: my kneedest blew up. I was on crutches for a
- 13:17Speaker 6: week and a half. I couldn't move the notes straight
- 13:20Speaker 6: away wide. Well, no, so this was the thing. So
- 13:22Speaker 6: I sort of just thought because people said to me
- 13:24Speaker 6: PRP can be really painful in that and the first
- 13:26Speaker 6: one I had, I was fired. I felt like I
- 13:27Speaker 6: could have played a few days later, but they usually
- 13:29Speaker 6: say you should do a couple of rounds to sort
- 13:31Speaker 6: of have a better effect. And so I went and
- 13:33Speaker 6: got the second lot, and I've got to training. And
- 13:35Speaker 6: the first thing Briani said to me because I'd gone
- 13:37Speaker 6: and got it done while the girls were still training,
- 13:39Speaker 6: and I rocked up and she was like, you look
- 13:41Speaker 6: like gray in the face, and then I sort of
- 13:43Speaker 6: was sitting down watching I just felt like it was
- 13:45Speaker 6: seizing up, and then all of a sudden, I was
- 13:46Speaker 6: almost like convulsing because my muscles were like spasming. I
- 13:51Speaker 6: ended up having to like take some patterning, fought to
- 13:53Speaker 6: him just be able to get home because I couldn't
- 13:54Speaker 6: be in like any position that was comfortable. And then
- 13:57Speaker 6: we still sort of thought maybe I've just.
- 13:59Speaker 2: Had a really tense reaction.
- 14:01Speaker 6: And then it wasn't until I then that weekend went
- 14:03Speaker 6: to the game and the doctor was like, no, this
- 14:05Speaker 6: you should have gone down by now, and he said,
- 14:07Speaker 6: let's send you back to the radiographer to get it
- 14:10Speaker 6: drained at least because the swelling was so ridiculous. And
- 14:13Speaker 6: on my way there, I get this call from our
- 14:14Speaker 6: team doctor and he goes, so, I've just turned from
- 14:16Speaker 6: the radiographers and they've had this, you know, they've just
- 14:18Speaker 6: been told from the manufacturers that there's this bad batch
- 14:21Speaker 6: that two percent of patients have had this really severe
- 14:24Speaker 6: the true reaction. So I thought, I'm really bloody lucky
- 14:26Speaker 6: because I was only one of the two percent.
- 14:28Speaker 2: But let's just say I probably won't be getting tipe
- 14:30Speaker 2: very do.
- 14:31Speaker 5: You know what, like all of these fancy schmans and
- 14:33Speaker 5: new treatments are all very well. Nothing can beat Denco
- 14:36Speaker 5: Rabin ten piece what ten quick bees?
- 14:42Speaker 2: I couldn't agree more. I couldn't agree more. That's a
- 14:44Speaker 2: strategy for this season?
- 14:46Speaker 1: Wow?
- 14:46Speaker 4: Can I ask in the off season?
- 14:48Speaker 3: So when you're traveling, you're you're over in the UK,
- 14:50Speaker 3: you're in Italy, what's what sort of general gym sessions
- 14:53Speaker 3: or what do you do for general fitness because obviously
- 14:55Speaker 3: the endorphins would be a big thing too.
- 14:57Speaker 4: You can't just stop the training.
- 14:58Speaker 6: And I'm someone I'm like, I felt bad for Daniel
- 15:00Speaker 6: who was traveling with me, because I would I'm just go, go, go,
- 15:02Speaker 6: like I would want to walk everywhere and every surprise.
- 15:06Speaker 2: What do you mean because I walk like I doo?
- 15:08Speaker 1: No.
- 15:09Speaker 6: I got a program from our physio, sorry, from our
- 15:11Speaker 6: strength conditioning coach before I went, So some of it
- 15:13Speaker 6: would just be circuit based stuff that you could do
- 15:15Speaker 6: easily and quickly in a gym that only had some
- 15:17Speaker 6: dumb bells. And then because I was still sort of
- 15:20Speaker 6: recovering from the knee as well, I had some real
- 15:21Speaker 6: specific rehab stuff that you know, I'd just seen in
- 15:23Speaker 6: the mini band and if I could get some weights around.
- 15:26Speaker 6: But we were sort of because Daniel was still kind
- 15:29Speaker 6: of in season as well. We made sure that we
- 15:30Speaker 6: stayed at places that either had access to a gym
- 15:33Speaker 6: or we were able to do things like that.
- 15:35Speaker 2: But I also was you were that couple. Well when
- 15:39Speaker 2: I say that, I recommended it about twice.
- 15:40Speaker 5: I see people like you and I'm on holidays and
- 15:42Speaker 5: I'm like, that's I wanted to do that to yourself
- 15:45Speaker 5: on holidays.
- 15:46Speaker 4: This is my husband and I.
- 15:47Speaker 3: So we're going to Europe in April of next year
- 15:50Speaker 3: and we're going to spend Easter in Switzerland and Legano
- 15:53Speaker 3: and he's already worked out which CrossFit box we're going
- 15:55Speaker 3: to go to.
- 15:56Speaker 2: Oh go, that's appressive.
- 15:59Speaker 1: Mental note, when you two asked me to go on holidays,
- 16:01Speaker 1: I'm busy. I'm washing my hair that entire week with Coxy. Okay, done,
- 16:07Speaker 1: and we'll just have cocktails. Hey, Mad's big recruit for
- 16:10Speaker 1: the Swifts next year. How excited are you to get
- 16:14Speaker 1: Grace Noiky here. We spoke about her in an earlier
- 16:16Speaker 1: episode and actually talked about how she was a young
- 16:19Speaker 1: superstar much the same as you you said you started
- 16:22Speaker 1: when you were sixteen. What kind of difference will she
- 16:24Speaker 1: make to you guys?
- 16:25Speaker 2: Oh, I'm so excited.
- 16:26Speaker 6: I remember being on my first Diamonds tour and not
- 16:28Speaker 6: even being in the twelve but being on the back
- 16:31Speaker 6: bench and watching her play, and that was sort of
- 16:33Speaker 6: in that breakout series she had, and I just remember thinking, God,
- 16:36Speaker 6: I wish I was a feeder that could just throw
- 16:38Speaker 6: the ball to her. And I think she's just got
- 16:41Speaker 6: such X factor in that she can do anything, like,
- 16:44Speaker 6: she can move, she can take the ball.
- 16:45Speaker 2: She's just got that flare.
- 16:47Speaker 6: And I remember just thinking, if I ever get the
- 16:49Speaker 6: opportunity to play with her, that would be, you know,
- 16:51Speaker 6: a bucket list and sort of getting asked in interviews,
- 16:53Speaker 6: who's you know, the best player in the world, and
- 16:55Speaker 6: just straight away thinking her. It's also nice that we
- 16:57Speaker 6: can say that Grace is on the core for the swifts.
- 17:01Speaker 2: Club we're going to have.
- 17:03Speaker 4: I'd also be involved in your book, clot of.
- 17:06Speaker 2: Course, I think that's half the reason she gave to this.
- 17:08Speaker 6: We sure, but no, I think I've also heard she's
- 17:11Speaker 6: a very very good person as well, So I think
- 17:12Speaker 6: she's just going to add so much.
- 17:13Speaker 2: I think you know, anyone coming up against her and Helen.
- 17:16Speaker 6: And even a Sophie Fawn's in the circle is going
- 17:18Speaker 6: to be in a bit of trouble.
- 17:19Speaker 1: So wait, no pressure. But we have already booked our
- 17:23Speaker 1: Grand Final tickets because we fully expect the sme.
- 17:25Speaker 2: I'm happy with that. We've got to be confident. We've
- 17:27Speaker 2: got to be confident.
- 17:29Speaker 3: It's also so exciting to have a mid quarter in
- 17:31Speaker 3: the room. It's always just let's talk about what happens
- 17:34Speaker 3: in the goal circle.
- 17:35Speaker 4: I don't know. I've never been in there once in
- 17:36Speaker 4: my life.
- 17:37Speaker 1: I can't get the ball without us, so to be fair,
- 17:39Speaker 1: you've not ever been in the winger tackle the center
- 17:41Speaker 1: position either though.
- 17:42Speaker 4: In fact, I found a photo the other day.
- 17:44Speaker 3: My mum sent me a photo that she found and
- 17:46Speaker 3: it's the earliest photo of me playing netball for Bluebirds
- 17:49Speaker 3: Club in McGregor in Brisbane.
- 17:51Speaker 4: Would be nineteen eighty I think, and I was goalkeeper.
- 17:55Speaker 4: Oh terrible form.
- 17:57Speaker 1: Though that was in defense. She meant that perform.
- 18:01Speaker 5: God, Maddie, I just want to ask you, like, we're
- 18:03Speaker 5: all very excited about the Swifts for this next season,
- 18:06Speaker 5: but how do you put behind the last season and
- 18:11Speaker 5: the disruptions, and you know, the Sam Wallace issue. She
- 18:15Speaker 5: was with you guys, and then she wasn't do you
- 18:16Speaker 5: go through a process to put that behind you? Do
- 18:18Speaker 5: You'll finish the season and go right, that's don undusted,
- 18:20Speaker 5: Let's think about next year.
- 18:22Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 18:22Speaker 6: I think I actually probably haven't been able to fully,
- 18:25Speaker 6: you know, digest what happened last year until I've had
- 18:28Speaker 6: time off, and I think I realized how much of
- 18:30Speaker 6: a toll it took on, like me personally, but everyone
- 18:33Speaker 6: as well, until we had that break, and just how
- 18:35Speaker 6: mentally exhausted we all were, and how I think the
- 18:39Speaker 6: hardest part as well about that whole situation was that
- 18:41Speaker 6: everyone sort of went through emotions at very different times.
- 18:44Speaker 6: I was someone that straight away was very emotional about
- 18:47Speaker 6: it and obviously had a very very deep connection with Sam,
- 18:50Speaker 6: was in her wedding, and then obviously also oneted what
- 18:52Speaker 6: was best for the team. And I remember in those
- 18:54Speaker 6: immediate few weeks, I think that was when I was
- 18:55Speaker 6: also going through issues with my knee, and it was
- 18:57Speaker 6: just a horrible sort of couple of weeks and probably
- 19:00Speaker 6: the toughest I've ever had definitely in terms of netball.
- 19:04Speaker 6: And then I sort of was like, all right, no,
- 19:05Speaker 6: we've got to you know, move on and we've got
- 19:07Speaker 6: to get to a point where we.
- 19:08Speaker 2: Can get our season back on track.
- 19:09Speaker 6: But then you'd have other players that had maybe sort
- 19:12Speaker 6: of not fully comprehended what had happened until three weeks later,
- 19:15Speaker 6: and so then it was just this constant, you know,
- 19:18Speaker 6: bringing up of those same emotions pretty much until the
- 19:20Speaker 6: end of the season. And I know that a lot
- 19:22Speaker 6: of people kind of had things to say about the
- 19:24Speaker 6: way that we celebrated after that Giants win. But I remember,
- 19:27Speaker 6: just as soon as the whistle blew in that game,
- 19:29Speaker 6: just bawling my eyes, crying because we hadn't won since
- 19:32Speaker 6: that had all happened, and just not knowing if we'd
- 19:35Speaker 6: ever be able to get to a point where we
- 19:37Speaker 6: were sort of okay with it.
- 19:38Speaker 2: And I think it was not only the players. It
- 19:40Speaker 2: was a toll.
- 19:40Speaker 6: It took on Briany on the entire you know of
- 19:42Speaker 6: Netbull New South Wales was and it was something that
- 19:45Speaker 6: you know, no one had a rule book for how
- 19:47Speaker 6: to deal with something like what happened, and so it
- 19:49Speaker 6: was always this case of just sort of working on
- 19:51Speaker 6: your feet, and so yeah, it probably wasn't until I
- 19:53Speaker 6: had all this time away that I was like, God,
- 19:56Speaker 6: that really took its toll. But now I'm at a
- 19:58Speaker 6: point where I feel so sort of mentally fresh, and
- 20:00Speaker 6: I think actually having that longer break and a lot
- 20:02Speaker 6: of the girls have sort of felt the same that
- 20:04Speaker 6: now it's like, you know, a redemption year and being
- 20:06Speaker 6: able to get things back on track and you know,
- 20:08Speaker 6: having some many exciting things like a Grace coming in,
- 20:11Speaker 6: a Shanne lambd and who you know who is going
- 20:13Speaker 6: to be so exciting as well. I think that, yeah,
- 20:16Speaker 6: it's going to be a really great year, and even
- 20:18Speaker 6: having you know, a new assistant coach come in. I
- 20:19Speaker 6: think just having some fresh things.
- 20:21Speaker 1: Which is who is we don't know.
- 20:25Speaker 6: I mean we might by the time this podcast come out,
- 20:27Speaker 6: I actually still don't. Definitely, I think it's yeah, I
- 20:30Speaker 6: think in the works, but yeah, a lot of a
- 20:33Speaker 6: fresh year twenty twenty five will be I think I'm excited.
- 20:37Speaker 4: Yeah, I'm excited too.
- 20:39Speaker 3: And I like how you said, Kath no maybe it
- 20:41Speaker 3: was Liz, one of you said, we're all excited about
- 20:42Speaker 3: the swifts. I reckon quite a lot of people aren't
- 20:44Speaker 3: that excited, but certainly.
- 20:45Speaker 4: All the Swifts fans are excited.
- 20:46Speaker 3: I think some of those Thunderbirds fans might not be
- 20:49Speaker 3: so excited because they're looking for a three peet or whatever.
- 20:53Speaker 4: We're coming for you.
- 20:54Speaker 1: It will be an interesting one and particularly now the
- 20:57Speaker 1: gf's been announced in Melbourne. Now, what do you think
- 20:59Speaker 1: about this? Because we're now looking at a Perth Grand Final,
- 21:03Speaker 1: a Melbourne Grand Final, an Adelaide Final and back to Melbourne.
- 21:06Speaker 1: Where is Sydney exactly?
- 21:07Speaker 6: We've missed a few stops along the road. I thought,
- 21:09Speaker 6: if we're you know, sharing it around, I mean I
- 21:12Speaker 6: would just love to. I've never played in a home
- 21:14Speaker 6: Grand final or won a home Grand Final. I just
- 21:16Speaker 6: think that would have been obviously the ultimate dream selfishly,
- 21:20Speaker 6: so I don't again, I don't know enough about the
- 21:22Speaker 6: process and who put the leaves in.
- 21:24Speaker 4: The premiere with a big bag hash advice.
- 21:27Speaker 6: So we need that. But I mean, as long as
- 21:29Speaker 6: it's a big stadium. I mean, you know, you love
- 21:31Speaker 6: the AFL Grand Final and you love that idea if
- 21:33Speaker 6: it's always in Melbourne, and so I don't hate the
- 21:35Speaker 6: idea that it's not in.
- 21:36Speaker 2: You know, the home state of the winning team.
- 21:39Speaker 6: But I just would have liked Sydney to get a
- 21:40Speaker 6: bit more of a look in anyway, Well.
- 21:42Speaker 1: Get onto it. The chair will tell you start speaking
- 21:45Speaker 1: to your premier.
- 21:46Speaker 4: Brisbane didn't even get a test match.
- 21:53Speaker 1: All right, now, listen, I'm going to put you in
- 21:55Speaker 1: the hot seat. This is Coxy's hot seat, Beautiful, Coxy's
- 21:58Speaker 1: quick fire. Cox still trying to out what to call
- 22:01Speaker 1: this hot box. Let's get t shirts that Coxe's hot box.
- 22:11Speaker 1: We are sitting in a hot box, all right. Ten
- 22:14Speaker 1: questions quick fire, beautiful? Ready, are we ready? Nervous? Coffee?
- 22:20Speaker 6: Order, arm and cap summer or winter summer? Oh but
- 22:24Speaker 6: the nettles in winter and winter summer.
- 22:28Speaker 4: Going well, so we're going with the order.
- 22:33Speaker 1: Quick Fire is not so quick when it's well, you've
- 22:37Speaker 1: kind of already answered this one. In the in the
- 22:38Speaker 1: open cocktails or wine and champagne.
- 22:41Speaker 2: Champagne.
- 22:42Speaker 1: That's my favorite funniest teammate.
- 22:44Speaker 2: Helen Howsby.
- 22:45Speaker 6: Oh funny, yes, whenevernyone asked me to describe Helen. So
- 22:48Speaker 6: this is not quick fire. It's whatever you think she's like.
- 22:50Speaker 6: It's the complete opposite. She is the quirkiest, funniest, like
- 22:54Speaker 6: the pranks that she pulls on people like because she's
- 22:56Speaker 6: so smart. I don't know if you guys have heard
- 22:58Speaker 6: about what she did to me this year. She fully
- 23:00Speaker 6: created an account I was selling a rug on Marketplace.
- 23:03Speaker 6: She created account called Pete and it was called Peter
- 23:06Speaker 6: Rank and me not realizing Pete Rank. She like literally
- 23:09Speaker 6: went back and forth with messages. She arranged the time
- 23:12Speaker 6: to come. She lived like half an hour away from me.
- 23:14Speaker 6: But on the Friday afternoon that she was due to arrive,
- 23:17Speaker 6: she rocks up to my house holding a mask with
- 23:19Speaker 6: the picture of Peter Rank on her holding five hundred
- 23:22Speaker 6: dollars of monopoly money.
- 23:24Speaker 2: She got the whole team involved, Like she is.
- 23:26Speaker 6: Just hilarious and just completely yeah quirky and yeah brilliant.
- 23:30Speaker 1: Oh too much time on what's the name of her cat,
- 23:35Speaker 1: Roger Roger, Yeah, Roger, and her partner's Barry.
- 23:39Speaker 2: It's Roger Barry and Helen.
- 23:40Speaker 6: They seem like they should be living in a cottage
- 23:42Speaker 6: in England years ago.
- 23:44Speaker 1: Oh my god, that's hysterical. Okay, favorite sport not netborn.
- 23:47Speaker 1: You can't say cricket because I feel like that's forced
- 23:49Speaker 1: upon it.
- 23:50Speaker 2: Yeah, that's fair, AFL.
- 23:51Speaker 1: I felt best holiday destination because she doesn't she likes
- 23:54Speaker 1: it because her boyfriend plays.
- 23:56Speaker 6: Before we did have a dog called Ponting growing up.
- 23:59Speaker 6: I must have been up in a family that loved cricket.
- 24:01Speaker 4: But it's still in South Australia. You're probably going to
- 24:03Speaker 4: like cricket.
- 24:04Speaker 1: Okay. Favorite holiday destination Europe? Plane activity. What do you
- 24:08Speaker 1: do on the plane?
- 24:09Speaker 6: Oh?
- 24:09Speaker 2: Binge? Watch any TV show?
- 24:11Speaker 1: What are you binge watching right now?
- 24:13Speaker 2: I went on the plane of the way home.
- 24:14Speaker 6: I went through like a Kardashian's phase, just because I
- 24:17Speaker 6: wanted something mind numbing. I know, and I'm someone that
- 24:19Speaker 6: usually would shun people to do that. But I'm also
- 24:21Speaker 6: rewatching Gossip Girls, so probably equally is embarrassing or I read.
- 24:25Speaker 6: I'm into my reading at the moment. The girls have
- 24:28Speaker 6: got me into fantasy. There's a lot of these weird
- 24:29Speaker 6: sort of almost fifty shades of fantasy on Yeah, that
- 24:34Speaker 6: they've got into this, like.
- 24:35Speaker 4: People having sex with elves.
- 24:36Speaker 2: Yeah, it's very straight. Again, I never liked fantasy, but
- 24:40Speaker 2: these were one night.
- 24:46Speaker 1: How does about How does Coxy's hot box end up?
- 24:49Speaker 1: In this conversation.
- 24:52Speaker 2: Cogression?
- 24:52Speaker 3: When we had our first live event before the test
- 24:55Speaker 3: match last week, Comic Con was on. That's why Kat
- 24:57Speaker 3: was looking so interested at the window all that. I
- 25:00Speaker 3: wonder if I'll see him again.
- 25:01Speaker 1: My elf destiny with his big feather. Anyway, you've completely
- 25:08Speaker 1: thrown me messiest teammate.
- 25:11Speaker 2: Oh so, Helen Howsby, Oh do you have a tattoo?
- 25:14Speaker 6: I did get one after we won the Grand Final
- 25:16Speaker 6: in twenty nineteen.
- 25:17Speaker 1: What is it?
- 25:18Speaker 2: It's a little swift on my side.
- 25:20Speaker 6: Oh and it was actually funny because some of the
- 25:23Speaker 6: I got I didn't play in twenty nineteen. That was
- 25:24Speaker 6: yearated by ACL. But this is how easily peer pressure
- 25:27Speaker 6: I am that. I was like, I.
- 25:28Speaker 2: Can't be that person.
- 25:29Speaker 6: That's like, just because I didn't play, it doesn't mean
- 25:30Speaker 6: I didn't get a tatoo.
- 25:31Speaker 2: Like, I'm still part of the team. I should still
- 25:33Speaker 2: get it. And then we rock up to go and
- 25:34Speaker 2: get it.
- 25:35Speaker 6: About five people had already bailed, so there are about
- 25:37Speaker 6: six or seven of us out of the whole squad
- 25:39Speaker 6: that ended up getting it, Like I think Paige and
- 25:41Speaker 6: Sarah didn't get one in the end.
- 25:43Speaker 2: But now I was like, that's why I'm twenty twenty one.
- 25:44Speaker 6: When we won, I was like, thank God, because now
- 25:46Speaker 6: I've got a double reason that I at least can have.
- 25:48Speaker 1: So who got the first round?
- 25:50Speaker 6: Maddie Turner's I think was the leader of it. I
- 25:52Speaker 6: think a few of them got a couple. Actually, Maddie
- 25:54Speaker 6: Turner got I remember Taylor Fraser got one. Laura Moore
- 25:57Speaker 6: was in the team at the time, Helen got one.
- 26:00Speaker 2: I think the majority of us got them. I reckon.
- 26:02Speaker 6: Out of that starting team it was, Yeah, it was
- 26:04Speaker 6: Paige and Sarah and then Kate Eddie.
- 26:06Speaker 2: Who didn't get one, but she had ended up going
- 26:07Speaker 2: to the Vixen's the following year.
- 26:09Speaker 1: What a good team you've got, because in twenty eleven
- 26:11Speaker 1: when we won, there was talk of tattoos and everyone
- 26:14Speaker 1: was so excited, and I said, right, as the captain
- 26:16Speaker 1: of this side, I will lead by example. I'll go first.
- 26:19Speaker 1: Let's go and do this, every bloody one of them,
- 26:22Speaker 1: chicken there, bales. I'm the last person that needs another tattoo.
- 26:27Speaker 1: I have got a star on my toe that represents
- 26:29Speaker 1: our Grand Final win, and no other bastard has got no.
- 26:33Speaker 2: I was impressed most into it.
- 26:34Speaker 3: I'm not met Maddie Turner, but it doesn't surprise me.
- 26:36Speaker 3: But she led the charge for this.
- 26:37Speaker 2: Yes, she's just all for it.
- 26:39Speaker 1: She's got a few, doesn't she. But then nice little one.
- 26:41Speaker 2: Yeah, she's got a lot of little one. I think
- 26:42Speaker 2: she's just got it. Recently got another one as well.
- 26:44Speaker 2: But yeah, it's funny.
- 26:45Speaker 6: Because Matie shows another one of those people that comes
- 26:46Speaker 6: across as this sort of shy and timid, but then
- 26:49Speaker 6: she's also just goes for it like she's the most
- 26:51Speaker 6: sort of stubborn but also just like strong minded person
- 26:54Speaker 6: that's like one she set her mind or something.
- 26:56Speaker 2: She's doing it.
- 26:56Speaker 1: And do you know who's got the ultimate alter ego
- 26:58Speaker 1: who I've seen out.
- 26:59Speaker 6: Is Clow call Sally or Svetlana. So Sally's her old
