- 0:11for global wealth creation.
- 0:13Welcome to It's My Money.
- 0:15It's My Money is brought to you by Brenthurst Wealth, South Africa's
- 0:18multi-award winning boutique wealth manager.
- 0:20Today we're going to talk about the following.
- 0:22It's an article which appeared in the press recently and the headline is five
- 0:26ways to face today's markets with
- 0:28true South African grit.
- 0:30I added the true there, but with South African grit.
- 0:31And the author of this piece was Sonia Duplessis.
- 0:34And she's with me now.
- 0:35Sonia, are you inspired by the rugby victory recently against New Zealand?
- 0:40Or was it just something you wanted to write?
- 0:43Yeah, Lindsay, hello.
- 0:44And hello to your listeners.
- 0:45Thank you.
- 0:47Yeah, I mean, we had such a good rugby match on Saturday.
- 0:49So everyone, I think everyone's morale and you know we're just feeling a little bit
- 0:56better in South Africa and
- 0:58after a game like that how can you not
- 0:59feel inspired so it just shows you how you know that true South African grit that
- 1:06everyone's talking
- 1:08about it really the
- 1:10South African rugby team really reflected it on Saturday yes it was a good game so
- 1:15the things are very good and as you
- 1:17say in your article you know how to adapt and you've faced An awful lot.
- 1:19Load shedding, you say, political curveballs and Iran that has a mind of its
- 1:26own, but it's doing well at the moment because of the weak dollar.
- 1:28But there's a resilience there, isn't there?
- 1:29And I suppose you can apply that to markets.
- 1:31And I think that's what you want to do, isn't it?
- 1:33And you start off with saying what's stirring the pot.
- 1:37And I think the first one is a very interesting one, stagflation and trade
- 1:42tensions.
- 1:44We have to take them separately.
- 1:46Stagflation is interesting because inflation is stubborn in the United
- 1:48States.
- 1:50And maybe even ticking higher.
- 1:50And the jobs market is in decline.
- 1:53And that is a sort of a mini stagflation, isn't it?
- 1:56Yeah, Lindsay.
- 1:57So if we look at what's making investors nervous at the moment, stagflation is
- 2:02definitely one of them.
- 2:04And like you mentioned now, stagflation, the definition is low growth paired with
- 2:09high inflation.
- 2:11So it's not a good combination.
- 2:13And that, fueled by the rising tariffs and global trade uncertainties, is
- 2:18It's a recipe for not disaster, but it's a recipe for uncertainty.
- 2:22And we don't know what President Trump is going to do in the next month or the next
- 2:28six months.
- 2:30And that is causing a lot of uncertainty for investors.
- 2:33Should they invest?
- 2:34Should they sit on the sidelines?
- 2:36Should they not invest?
- 2:37Yeah.
- 2:38And when you say should they invest or should they not invest, AI, artificial
- 2:43intelligence,
- 2:45and the companies associated with AI and its delivery.
- 2:49really does provide you and your clients with a conundrum because the valuations
- 2:56are so high.
- 2:57And is this thing hype or hope, as you say?
- 3:00Yes, yeah.
- 3:00So one's got to ask the question now, is the AI sector,
- 3:07is it hope or just a situation of hype?
- 3:09But a lot of the growth in markets has been driven by the AI sector.
- 3:16And...
- 3:17We don't know if it's sustainable.
- 3:19I mean, I think Meta came out, I think it was in August this year,
- 3:23saying that they're going to slash a lot of what they're spending on their AI
- 3:30budget.
- 3:32And that was a big decision that they made.
- 3:33And we're not really seeing, you know,
- 3:35a lot of companies have spent so much on getting AI technology into their company,
- 3:42but they're not,
- 3:44very few are really showing profits yet from...
- 3:47you know, the big spend that they made into the company.
- 3:50Yeah.
- 3:51You know, so it's debatable.
- 3:54Is the whole AI story, is it just a hype or will profit still come through?
- 4:00And that is one of the concerns of investors on, you know.
- 4:05Yeah, and it could take the whole market down if the bubble, so-called bubble, does
- 4:09burst.
- 4:11And outside of the tech sector, you talk about soaring valuations.
- 4:14Because shares are expensive relative to their actual performance.
- 4:18There's worrying macro signals.
- 4:20We've sort of spoken about that.
- 4:22And there's geopolitics in the background the whole time.
- 4:24So there's so many things that people have to consider.
- 4:27But what we really need to address here, or what you need to address, Sonia, is how
- 4:34to respond.
- 4:36What do you say when people come to you and make all the points that we've just
- 4:38made?
- 4:39Yeah, so, I mean, it's valid points.
- 4:42if a client comes to us with these points.
- 4:47And we do take it into consideration.
- 4:50We just don't, you know, we take calculated risks.
- 4:53We sort of like, I don't want to say read the market, but you assess the market.
- 4:58And according to...
- 5:00What is happening in the macro picture, and according to the client's risk
- 5:06profile,
- 5:08you would invest it.
- 5:10But a couple of pointers on how do the men on the street or how do investors respond.
- 5:14We always tell them that you have to filter out the noise.
- 5:18It's so important to make an informed decision on what you are actually reading
- 5:25and how much time you are spending
- 5:27on it.
- 5:29You're always going to have that one economist.
- 5:31that's going to forecast the global meltdown.
- 5:33And it's been happening now for the last 100 years.
- 5:36So you've got to sort of like filter out the noise and lend your ears out
- 5:43selectively and take
- 5:45what's out in the media with a pinch of salt.
- 5:46So, yeah, the other thing is stay diversified.
- 5:50Just before you go to stay diversified, some commentators are incredibly
- 5:56persuasive, aren't they?
- 5:58If they want to punt a particular stock or a particular idea or a particular asset
- 6:04class, they can be so persuasive.
- 6:06And you think, wait a second, he or she said something that really resonates with
- 6:08me.
- 6:09Let me phone Sonia Duplessis and you filter for them.
- 6:12Stay diversified.
- 6:13Sorry, I interrupt you.
- 6:15Diversification is so important.
- 6:18Yeah, so it's so important.
- 6:21We've spoken so much on your program about it.
- 6:24investment world, we say it's the only free lunch that you get.
- 6:27So as boring and as vanilla as it sounds, you have to have a diversified portfolio.
- 6:34And for South Africans, you have to have some sort of like,
- 6:38or a heavy offshore allocation in your portfolio.
- 6:41And even for offshore investors, you need to split your assets across geographies,
- 6:48across asset classes, across currencies.
- 6:52And also be mindful of very sector-specific stocks.
- 6:58Like, for example, technology.
- 7:01Don't go and put 40% of your money in a very specific sector.
- 7:06You know, the whole crypto phase, or not phase,
- 7:11but also be mindful not to over-invest into risky assets like that.
- 7:16So, so important to stay diversified.
- 7:20And apart from risky assets, there's also a temptation to go into safe havens as
- 7:25well.
- 7:25And the money market funds in particular are generally considered to be safe havens
- 7:32in the global system.
- 7:34Yeah.
- 7:35So if you've got all these things going on in global markets,
- 7:41you tend to want to hide in money market or in bond funds.
- 7:45But we warn people or warn investors about that.
- 7:48you've got The risk of your money not growing with inflation, not keeping up
- 7:54with inflation.
- 7:56You've got growth that is taxed quite a bit, money market growth that's taxed
- 8:00quite a bit.
- 8:01And then you always sit with that question at the back of your head that if this
- 8:07money, if you want to invest this money,
- 8:09when are you going to invest it?
- 8:11When is it, when's the right time going to be to invest this money?
- 8:13So yeah, so use money market cautiously.
- 8:16Don't, don't have a massive allocation to money market.
- 8:19but there is definitely a space for some allocation to money market for your super
- 8:25short term money.
- 8:27But don't go and try and hide all your money in money market for when things
- 8:32settle down and for when markets will recover,
- 8:34because you, quite frankly, will never get that day.
- 8:35There will always be something that's going on in markets.
- 8:38OK, money markets, we must reiterate, are an important part of many portfolios.
- 8:44What you're saying is they shouldn't be used as a sort of any port in a storm and
- 8:49put all your money in there.
- 8:51We know what you're saying here.
- 8:53What do you mean by phase in if you're uncertain, which is point number four,
- 8:54Sonia?
- 8:55One of the strategies that you can follow if you are a bit cautious about just going
- 9:01smack bang
- 9:03to put your money in the market, we would follow a phase in approach.
- 9:07So we'll put, you know, you'll phase it over three or six month period.
- 9:12systematically into the market.
- 9:14It just softens the blow if there is a market correction.
- 9:20So you can either make the decision to, if you've made the decision to invest your
- 9:26money,
- 9:26you can either put everything into the market in one bank or you can phase it in
- 9:32over a couple of months.
- 9:34So for your more cautious investor, that is sometimes the better approach to
- 9:39follow.
- 9:39Okay, and the final point is let the plan...
- 9:42work once you invest you say give it time it's like me so this is a stupid example
- 9:48but it's
- 9:50it works for me i'll be watching a series on netflix and i think oh my goodness me
- 9:56why did i choose this it's so slow and then
- 9:58suddenly you get into it it's the same as a financial plan it's not gonna usually
- 10:01not gonna you know turn the lights on straight away shoot the lights out
- 10:08straight where you've got to give it time.
- 10:10Yeah, no, I mean, investing isn't a short-term race.
- 10:14You know, it's a long-term marathon.
- 10:16So you need a plan.
- 10:19You need a short-term plan for your immediate financial needs.
- 10:22You need a sort of like a medium-term plan, and then you need a long-term
- 10:28retirement plan.
- 10:30And also the other thing that investors must know is if all of this sounds too
- 10:36complicated or
- 10:38overwhelming, you tend to just put it aside and want to deal with it later on,
- 10:42which is also not the correct path to follow.
- 10:44So if you've done the moita and you've put in the time to set up a proper plan with a
- 10:51financial
- 10:51planner, when you start to implement it, I almost want to say don't overthink it,
- 10:56just let the process follow through and you will definitely reap the rewards
- 11:03from this plan and the financial decisions you made.
- 11:06Very good.
- 11:07So let's put all this together.
- 11:08The factors that you're being bombarded with, plus the advice that you've given,
- 11:12what's the bottom line?
- 11:14How would you sum it up, please, Sonia?
- 11:16Yeah, I think that, you know,
- 11:17we've summed it up quite nicely now in the last thing about let your plan work for
- 11:24you.
- 11:24And resilience pays off.
- 11:26Lindsay, like we all know,
- 11:29it's not the best decision to switch or sell out of the market if there's a
- 11:34correction or a dip.
- 11:36And if we've got luck in times that we are experiencing now, you know,
- 11:42with a lot of uncertainty in markets, it doesn't make sense to sell out or sit on
- 11:48the sideline.
- 11:50You have to think long term.
- 11:52You have to.
- 11:54Equities is always a long term game, at least eight to 10 years.
- 11:57But there is, you know, you need a financial planner to guide you,
- 12:03to look at your short term.
- 12:05for objections or, you know, goals and also for your medium term goals.
- 12:11So you need to bring in other asset classes and not just equity.
- 12:15You might want to bring in a little bit of money market or, you know, the bottom line
- 12:21is resilience pays off.
- 12:23You have to sit through the market cycles, the different ups and downs, and it will
- 12:27definitely pay off.
- 12:29Exactly.
- 12:31And if you've got any worries or any aspirations that you can't quite work out
- 12:35yourself, just phone your financial.
- 12:37advisor.
- 12:39Sonia, great advice as always.
- 12:41Thanks very much for your time.
