- 2:28I know that I am definitely ready.
- 2:31All right, guys.
- 2:32So this is Inspirations for Your Life.
- 2:34This is series five.
- 2:35It's show number 14, episode one.
- 2:38The master topic of the week is own
- 2:41your focus.
- 2:43And that comes under the bridges of clarity
- 2:45and courage, and of course, momentum.
- 2:47It is Saturday.
- 2:48And our granular topic for Saturday is observe
- 2:51and assess.
- 2:52Oh, by the way, if you're wondering who
- 2:54I am, sure, I'm John C.
- 2:56Morley, serial entrepreneur.
- 2:57I'm an engineer, marketing specialist, video producer, podcast
- 3:00host, coach, keynote speaker, graduate student, and a
- 3:03passionate lifelong learner.
- 3:04And in less than 60 days, guys, I
- 3:06will be a published author.
- 3:08I am really excited about that.
- 3:09So welcome, everyone, again, to Inspirations for Your
- 3:11Life.
- 3:13Today, we're diving into owning your focus, a
- 3:18week dedicated to sharpening your perception, acting decisively,
- 3:22and maintaining momentum through intentional choices.
- 3:25You're going to learn this week to see
- 3:27opportunities others will often miss.
- 3:31Think clearly under pressure and turn small actions
- 3:34into consistent life-changing progress.
- 3:37Let's step in and start observing what really
- 3:40matters.
- 3:41That's right, guys.
- 3:42So notice patterns others ignore.
- 3:47Opportunities hide in what most people overlook.
- 3:51So I have a question for all of
- 3:52you.
- 3:53Assumptions early.
- 3:55As I say to people, we have to
- 3:57question the assumptions early.
- 3:58Challenge default thinking before making decisions.
- 4:04Pause before reacting.
- 4:06Taking a breath gives clarity and avoids mistakes.
- 4:10Small details reveal big insights.
- 4:12And the tiniest signals often lead to the
- 4:14biggest breakthroughs.
- 4:16Did you know that?
- 4:16Yes, it does.
- 4:18Awareness uncovers hidden leverage.
- 4:20Focus reveals areas where small actions create outsized
- 4:24impact.
- 4:25And I think people don't realize that that's
- 4:27possible, but it really is possible.
- 4:31Track your habits, guys, to spot improvement.
- 4:34Daily reflection exposes growth opportunities.
- 4:37So I encourage people to meditate and reflect.
- 4:44Observation reduces mistakes.
- 4:47Seeing clearly prevents costly missteps.
- 4:51I'll tell you a quick story that my
- 4:53grandfather always would tell me.
- 4:54On my dad's side.
- 4:56And that was, John, you need to measure
- 4:59twice and cut once.
- 5:00Because if you cut wrong, you can't make
- 5:03it bigger.
- 5:04You can make it smaller, but you can't
- 5:05make it bigger.
- 5:06Whether that's wire, whether that's wood, anything.
- 5:08Once you cut it, you can't make it
- 5:09bigger again.
- 5:11Seeing clearly prevents costly missteps.
- 5:14Recognizing subtle opportunities, the world rewards those who
- 5:18notice nuance.
- 5:20Focus on high value tasks.
- 5:21Spend energy where it moves the needle most.
- 5:26Compare results to intentions.
- 5:29Measure outcomes against your goals.
- 5:33For what I'll say, guys, is course correction.
- 5:36So that's a very important thing.
- 5:39Mindful reflection is also key.
- 5:42Mindful reflection enhances clarity.
- 5:45So step back, guys, and think choices.
- 5:48That's better choices for you.
- 5:50Avoid jumping to conclusions.
- 5:51Because so many people want to do that
- 5:52because they're in a rush.
- 5:54Patience uncovers the truth before action is taken.
- 5:59So we need to have patience.
- 6:01And we need to look at not only
- 6:03the trees and the birds, but we have
- 6:05to look at the entire forest as a
- 6:08collection.
- 6:09Contact shapes our perception.
- 6:11And I've said to you guys before that
- 6:13perceptions create our reality.
- 6:17Understand the environment, guys, before deciding.
- 6:20Observation prevents wasted effort.
- 6:23Don't work harder on things that don't matter.
- 6:27Notice what competitors miss.
- 6:29Find gaps others overlook.
- 6:31And seize the opportunity.
- 6:34Seize that moment to actually, I'm going to
- 6:39say, move forward.
- 6:41I think that's a very important thing.
- 6:46So we have to think about that.
- 6:50And I know that's scary for some people.
- 6:57So what I mean is that we have
- 7:00to be intentional on the choices that we
- 7:02take in life.
- 7:04The gaps that we find are because of
- 7:09our awareness.
- 7:13Success is all around us, guys.
- 7:15And the reason you may not be picking
- 7:17up success is because you're tuned into a
- 7:19different channel.
- 7:22If you want to listen to rock music
- 7:24and you're tuned into classical, well, you're never
- 7:26going to hear rock.
- 7:27And if you want to hear, let's say,
- 7:31classical and you're tuned to another, you're not
- 7:33going to hear it.
- 7:33But if you're tuned into, let's say, a
- 7:36news station and you want to hear classical,
- 7:38you're not going to hear it.
- 7:39So you've got to be tuned into the
- 7:41channel that is going to bring you what
- 7:43you're looking for.
- 7:45Does that make sense?
- 7:47So when we think about these things, I
- 7:50think it helps us to understand a tiny
- 7:55bit, a tiny bit.
- 8:02But it does take time to do this,
- 8:04guys.
- 8:12Does that make sense?
- 8:17And I want to tell you that thinking
- 8:21about awareness helps give us a new lease
- 8:26on life.
- 8:27Strengthening decision-making, seeing the whole picture, gives
- 8:29us confidence to want to move forward.
- 8:32Now, small insights compound over time.
- 8:35Tailor observations accumulate in expertise.
- 8:39It's not that everything kind of comes at
- 8:42once.
- 8:42It's the fact that we get this assimilation.
- 8:46I want to talk about this like SEO,
- 8:47search engine optimization.
- 8:49You could put great pages up there, right?
- 8:51But you don't get the benefits of them
- 8:54overnight.
- 8:55Google might take a couple of days, a
- 8:57couple of weeks, a couple of months until
- 8:59it starts to see them.
- 8:59And the truth of the matter is, if
- 9:01your domain is too young, then Google will
- 9:04maybe list your domain and see the pages,
- 9:07but it will choose not to index them
- 9:09because it doesn't find them to be important.
- 9:13Now, if it is indexed and you can
- 9:17find it, that's great.
- 9:19But if it doesn't rank you for more
- 9:22than just your domain, then you're also not
- 9:25going to be found.
- 9:26So that's important, too.
- 9:27Google has to see you as an authority
- 9:29in that industry, all right?
- 9:32That's a very, very important thing for us
- 9:36to realize.
- 9:37And so when I say realize, I mean
- 9:41we have to be aware of subtle, subtle,
- 9:45subtle changes, okay?
- 9:47Not big changes, but I mean like really,
- 9:50really subtle changes, okay?
- 9:53That's important, guys, but you can do
- 10:03it.
- 10:08And when you are aware of these subtle
- 10:12changes, you suddenly get different perceptions.
- 10:19Recognize, guys, early signs of change.
- 10:21Anticipate the shifts before they disrupt your life.
- 10:24Because the thing is, there's always going to
- 10:28be something that might upset your apple cart.
- 10:29Now, if you have a plan B, then
- 10:32guess what?
- 10:33You're going to be doing really, really, really,
- 10:36really well.
- 10:37I think that's a very important thing to
- 10:41understand, is that you're going to do really,
- 10:44really well.
- 10:46Tracking patterns creates advantage.
- 10:48I've said this before.
- 10:49When we can look at patterns, I don't
- 10:51care whether we're talking about artificial intelligence, computer
- 10:53science, whether we're talking about pharmaceutical, biology, chemistry.
- 10:58When we can recognize patterns, we get this
- 11:02huge advantage.
- 11:05Consistency in noticing leads to predictive power.
- 11:12Now, predictive power is not magical, guys, okay?
- 11:19Okay?
- 11:22And when I say it's not magical, because
- 11:26you're thinking of something, but maybe you're not
- 11:29sure of it, okay?
- 11:34That's important, guys, very, very important to realize.
- 11:43But sometimes, like I said, we get stuck,
- 11:46right?
- 11:47We get stuck in a certain pace.
- 11:55Does that make sense?
- 11:58And I want to tell you that getting
- 12:01stuck is okay, as long as you can
- 12:04get unstuck.
- 12:06Sometimes our stuckness gets us into a place
- 12:08of, I got to observe that.
- 12:10Why am I acting that way?
- 12:12See, observation fuels creativity.
- 12:14Seeing what's happening allows new ideas to emerge,
- 12:18almost like out of thin air.
- 12:21Focused awareness builds momentum, and attention, concentrated on
- 12:26the right things, will inevitably accelerate the results.
- 12:30But most people are too lazy for that,
- 12:34okay?
- 12:37And that can make a very, very, very,
- 12:41very big difference.
- 12:42So let's do this, guys.
- 12:44Let's understand that when we become this, let's
- 12:49say, acute to what's going on, it precedes
- 12:52the action.
- 12:53Knowing the problem or the challenge fully before
- 12:55acting boldly.
- 12:58Awareness will always protect energy, avoid the distractions
- 13:01that drain mental bandwidth.
- 13:03They can happen from anywhere, guys, okay?
- 13:10Anywhere, all right?
- 13:12Anywhere at all.
- 13:15Daily assessment, guys, strengthens skill.
- 13:19Review and refine your approach every day.
- 13:21You know, when I was doing my writing,
- 13:23guys, I have to tell you, writing the
- 13:25first time, you know, you think you have
- 13:28it right, but I can tell you something,
- 13:29you don't always have it right.
- 13:30You have to go back and you have
- 13:32to review.
- 13:33And sometimes I review several times.
- 13:35It's like you get this epiphany moment that
- 13:37is, I'm gonna say, really, really, really amazing.
- 13:44And that's important, all right?
- 13:48Really, really, really important, okay?
- 13:54But you can do it.
- 13:56You can do it.
- 14:04And if you have this awareness, if you
- 14:07have this understanding, you can make a lot
- 14:10of changes in your life.
- 14:12But awareness becomes this very quiet thing that
- 14:17the mind kind of dials into like nonchalantly.
- 14:24Watch trends, not the noise, because a lot
- 14:27of times we get noise around us and
- 14:29we think the noise is it, but it's
- 14:34not.
- 14:35It's a distraction to what we're trying to
- 14:36get to.
- 14:38Separate the signal from the distraction to actively
- 14:41and decisively move forward.
- 14:45I know you might be saying, John, well,
- 14:46that never happens to me, okay?
- 14:55All right, I think that's an important thing
- 14:58to realize.
- 15:01Observation, folks, improves the foresight.
- 15:04Seeing patterns ahead gives strategic advantage.
- 15:08So if you're somebody who can recognize patterns,
- 15:12you'll go far in life, whether we're in
- 15:15math, whether we're in logic, any kind of
- 15:18problem solving, because chances are the challenger problem
- 15:22you've seen has come up in your life
- 15:25before.
- 15:25And like, oh, I got the answer to
- 15:27that.
- 15:28You got the answer, right?
- 15:32That's important thing.
- 15:41I think that's important to understand, very important
- 15:46to definitely understand, all right?
- 15:49But you have to do it slowly and
- 15:50carefully, slowly and carefully, not something that you're
- 15:55gonna do quickly, right?
- 15:57Not quickly.
- 15:59And I know you might be saying to
- 16:00me, John, well, like, it's not working for
- 16:05me.
- 16:05And that's because you're trying too hard.
- 16:11You heard me say that, right?
- 16:12You are trying too hard.
- 16:17Pattern recognition should be something you enjoy, something
- 16:20that's easy, not something that's gonna give you
- 16:22a lot of pushback.
- 16:25If it's giving you pushback, guess what?
- 16:28It's not natural.
- 16:30You're not seeing the right thing, all right?
- 16:33You're not seeing the right thing.
- 16:38That's important, guys.
- 16:41Attention to detail.
- 16:43I don't care whether you're in graphic design
- 16:45or whether you're in construction, engineering, detail is
- 16:48important.
- 16:49It multiplies our impact.
- 16:51Small precision leads to exponential results.
- 16:55Churning a flange or a screw, just a
- 16:59fraction can make such a big difference.
- 17:01Insight comes from the patience that we develop.
- 17:05We're not born with patience, guys, I gotta
- 17:07tell you.
- 17:07We're not born as leaders and we're not
- 17:09born with patience.
- 17:10You have to develop that.
- 17:12Give ideas time to form before you act
- 17:15upon them, all right?
- 17:19Before you act upon them.
- 17:23That's a very important thing to realize.
- 17:27I say before you act upon them.
- 17:29Awareness, I'm gonna say again, guys, sharpens our
- 17:32intuition.
- 17:33The more you see, the stronger your gut
- 17:35becomes.
- 17:36See clearly, act intentionally.
- 17:39Clear observation paired with deliberate action drives real
- 17:43true success.
- 17:45And if you're trying to get something too
- 17:48fast, chances are you're missing the whole cake,
- 17:55right?
- 17:56I'm gonna use the analogy of a cake
- 17:58because sometimes people like, you know, you're having
- 18:00the icy on the cake but you're not
- 18:01enjoying the whole cake.
- 18:03Or you've seen the thing about a book,
- 18:05right?
- 18:05You're judging the book by its cover.
- 18:08How do you know if the book's any
- 18:09good?
- 18:09You can't judge it by its cover.
- 18:12But so many people do that.
- 18:15It's usually not good readers, it's people that
- 18:17are wanting to look for a quick fix
- 18:20to get out of the book.
- 18:24So observation allows us to dial into so
- 18:29many, I'm gonna say, things in our life.
- 18:33Things that we didn't even know were possible.
- 18:39Things we didn't even know were possible.
- 18:50That's pretty cool, guys.
- 18:52So observation allows us to take the data,
- 18:55which is what we see, hear, touch, taste,
- 18:57smell, and experience and create something new.
- 19:08You know, a lot of times when we're
- 19:10working on a new project, I don't know
- 19:11if we're talking about a book, we're talking
- 19:13about a software program, we're talking about building
- 19:16a deck, we're talking about a renovation, we're
- 19:19talking about balancing a budget, we're talking about
- 19:23an advertising plan, we're talking about a negotiation.
- 19:28We could be talking about anything.
- 19:32But when we start out, we have to
- 19:34have an understanding of what's around us.
- 19:40Now, that can be people, right?
- 19:42That absolutely can be people.
- 19:45But for whatever reason, we rush through because
- 19:51we feel that if we rush through, we'll
- 19:56solve it quicker.
- 19:57But chances are, we're not gonna solve it
- 19:59quicker.
- 20:00We're gonna have to go through it again
- 20:02and again and again.
- 20:04So we've always said that haste makes waste.
- 20:07So why are you rushing things to be
- 20:09done so quickly?
- 20:12Embrace the discovery.
- 20:15Another wise person I've known said to me,
- 20:17John, life is when we discover a bunch
- 20:24of games worth learning and being able to
- 20:27live through.
- 20:28And so when we approach life as a
- 20:31game, as a bunch of challenges, we can
- 20:34figure out, well, what puzzle are we trying
- 20:36to solve?
- 20:38And I know that you feel that if
- 20:40we solve a puzzle, it's gonna help me
- 20:41do very well.
- 20:42But just think of it as a puzzle,
- 20:44right?
- 20:45Maybe you're a game player.
- 20:46Maybe you are trying to get better at
- 20:49a certain sport.
- 20:52If you approach that sport with so much
- 20:55stress, you probably won't play it anymore.
- 20:57I know a lot of people play golf.
- 20:58I love golf.
- 20:59But if you approach golf with stress, you're
- 21:01not gonna play and you're not gonna enjoy
- 21:03golf, okay?
- 21:07You're not gonna enjoy it.
- 21:09And that's something that I feel a lot
- 21:11of people don't realize.
- 21:14Enjoy the game.
- 21:16Another person said to me, John, you know,
- 21:18you have to suit up.
- 21:21Every day, approach the world as a game.
- 21:27Figure out where you need to move and
- 21:30what actions you need to take to get
- 21:33the results you want.
- 21:35While being genuine and intentional.
- 21:40I talk about this a lot when it
- 21:42comes to networking.
- 21:43So many people I know will literally just,
- 21:46well, literally, they'll literally just come there and
- 21:53just grab cards.
- 21:55But they don't intentionally get to know people.
- 21:58They're not in it for the relationship.
- 22:00We have another slogan in our chamber.
- 22:02It's called relationships before transactions.
- 22:07That's key, guys.
- 22:09I know everybody wants the transaction.
- 22:12But if you're just a transaction, there's no
- 22:16meaning, there's no respect.
- 22:18And I think a lot of people, well,
- 22:22unfortunately, they learn this the hard way.
- 22:25When I started business a long time ago,
- 22:28my first company, not my second, third or
- 22:31fourth, when I started my very first company,
- 22:34it was actually when I was still in
- 22:36college as a junior with a friend of
- 22:38mine.
- 22:39So we're like 32 years, okay, this year.
- 22:46And when I had a friend of mine
- 22:48who was working with me for a little
- 22:49time, he was trying to do all this
- 22:52stuff, but it wasn't stuff that was gonna
- 22:55stick.
- 22:57He did stuff that he thought was gonna
- 22:59matter, but it didn't matter.
- 23:03He put a facade on.
- 23:05He made me believe he was good at
- 23:07what he was doing, but he wasn't.
- 23:10I didn't call him on the carpet about
- 23:11that.
- 23:12I asked him if he needed help, assistance
- 23:14or training.
- 23:16Of course, no, I don't need that.
- 23:20Our relationship wound up ending over, we started
- 23:27the business in 32.
- 23:28I would say over 10 or 12 years
- 23:30ago, it ended, well, let's say 10 or
- 23:3412 years ago from when we started the
- 23:36business, okay?
- 23:40So that was a very interesting turning point
- 23:42because he wasn't getting what was going wrong.
- 23:50He was not getting what was going wrong
- 23:59and he was never gonna get it.
- 24:04And the reason he wasn't gonna get it
- 24:08because he just didn't understand that it's not
- 24:12about a transaction.
- 24:16It's not about a transaction.
- 24:18It's about much, much more.
- 24:24It's about much, much more guys.
- 24:27It's about understanding how you can take the
- 24:30data that is around you and move forward
- 24:35and make choices.
- 24:39That is intentional choices where you can deliberately
- 24:43affect what's around you.
- 24:48That's pretty cool guys.
- 24:51Affect what's around you.
- 24:56Affect what is around you.
- 25:05Probably sounds confusing for you, but it's not,
- 25:09okay?
- 25:14It takes intention.
- 25:18It takes honesty.
- 25:24It takes a passion.
- 25:38I think that's an important piece guys.
- 25:42A very important piece.
- 25:51A piece that maybe you're not aware of.
- 25:58When I say the world is about transactions,
- 26:01they're all about what people can get, but
- 26:04they're not about the human dynamic interchange.
- 26:09They just wanna get what they need and
- 26:11get out, but they're not looking to build
- 26:13a bridge.
- 26:14They're just looking to use the bridge.
- 26:17So there's a difference between building a bridge
- 26:18you can recross and be comfortable with and
- 26:21one that you just go to when you
- 26:24need.
- 26:25A one-way need, not a two-way
- 26:27need.
- 26:28So this whole week is really exciting to
- 26:30me because owning your focus allows you to
- 26:37be a deliberate creator.
- 26:40I don't use that word a lot, but
- 26:42when we learn that we can be a
- 26:45deliberate creator, our life changes.
- 26:51Our life changes.
- 26:56And I think that's something that a lot
- 26:57of people like just don't get.
- 27:07They just don't get it.
- 27:11And that's a very, very big problem, guys.
- 27:15A very, very big problem.
- 27:18When we're more about transactions than the relationships,
- 27:23it will show.
- 27:24It definitely will show.
- 27:25We've got a lot to cover this week,
- 27:27guys, by the way.
- 27:29So in closing, I just wanna say that's
- 27:32all for this Saturday session tonight for Observe

- 27:36Remember, owning your focus isn't just about seeing,
- 27:40and it's not always through the eyes, I've
