- 0:01Welcome to Extra Innings on the Sports Card Clubhouse with the
- 0:05hit list of Jake and Matt from Providence, the number one
- 0:09dealer in New England. So I've heard.
- 0:11So I've heard. How's it going?
- 0:13Good. Yeah, good.
- 0:14Glad to be back. We're back.
- 0:15Yeah. We.
- 0:16We. The mouse on that petty.
- 0:19The bleep button. I got my.
- 0:22My ears are. Rigging.
- 0:22Unbelievable. My ears are rigging.
- 0:25All those, all that bleeping. Yeah, we, we didn't record last
- 0:30week because we had one in the cans that you listen to if you
- 0:33already heard that. So we're back this week and I
- 0:38wanted to talk about something that sort of originates from a
- 0:41conversation on a different sports card.
- 0:43Clubhouse podcast. Turn back the Clock with Adam
- 0:46Splendid Sports and Dylan Double D vintage baseball cards. 2
- 0:50tremendous guys I love their content, I love what they talk
- 0:54about but you know, I think sometimes you hear things and
- 0:58you kind of like think about it and makes you think a little bit
- 1:00differently about it and maybe you don't totally agree and I
- 1:02just wanted to wanted to talk about the autograph discussions
- 1:06it. Is Adam from Splendid He's part
- 1:09of like the clubhouse hierarchy. The the hierarchy.
- 1:14Yes, he is. He's.
- 1:15One of the code makers and you're going to badmouth him.
- 1:18I'm not bad mouth, Matt. You're going to get me in
- 1:20trouble. I'm not bad mouthing anybody.
- 1:22It's OK to. You're going to bad mouth and am
- 1:24I going to get you in trouble? You're just killing.
- 1:28Me. Are you people hearing this?
- 1:30Do you hear what he's saying? I never.
- 1:34You're going to get mad. I'm not.
- 1:36That is a troublemaker. This is what I've learned about
- 1:38him in our our time as a friend. I'm anti trouble.
- 1:42I OK Oh, dear. You.
- 1:45You're start. You're starting trouble right
- 1:47now with me is what you're doing.
- 1:51Let's talk about autographs, Matt.
- 1:53So those guys. How you disagree with those
- 1:55other guys I guess. I, I just, I thought it was
- 1:59interesting to hear them talk about the sort of prevalence or
- 2:03how much they liked pack pulled autos and how that was kind of
- 2:07like what they. Think was kind of what was that
- 2:09their opinion? I don't want to, like, put words
- 2:13in their mouth exactly, but I know that.
- 2:14Adam, did you listen? To the show, was that the
- 2:16opinion or not? Adam was talking about like his
- 2:19hierarchy of like what he likes for autographs and he said that
- 2:22pack pulled autos was like at the top.
- 2:24You did say that we got to. Get off this channel.
- 2:28Guy's a crazy person. Guy's a crazy person.
- 2:30He's a crazy. Person see, now you're get, now
- 2:32you're starting trouble. Now you're.
- 2:34I didn't say that. You open Pandora's box.
- 2:37This is your fault. I don't watch that.
- 2:39You watched it and now you're going to get me involved.
- 2:42This is your fault. First you got Mike last week
- 2:46telling me I'm top three. Absurd.
- 2:49Now splendid. Pack pulled.
- 2:53Pack pulled. Yeah.
- 2:54On Did he say had to be on card, So at least while the player was
- 2:58signing the one millionth autograph, he at least touched
- 3:00the thing for a second. I think like that was, I think
- 3:03that was kind of the gist that I got was that it was.
- 3:05Not a sticker I assume. I don't know does anybody like
- 3:09sticker autos like I don't know how anybody can like it.
- 3:12I don't get it like it just I think it's awful.
- 3:15I think I on card auto 100%. I don't I don't know any how
- 3:20anybody can like like sticker autos.
- 3:22I don't get it and one of the things.
- 3:24Like the guy signed it and put the sticker on the card himself.
- 3:28And there's so much chicanery fraud and stuff like that.
- 3:31Like those guys talked about this dude, I said chicanery all.
- 3:35Right. Be careful.
- 3:37You're going to have to point out for me.
- 3:40All of a sudden. The I'm trying to.
- 3:42Run a clean show here people. Pulling the sticker autos off of
- 3:471 off of 1 card and trying to put it on another.
- 3:49Card. I tell you what I bought.
- 3:51I bought a Beckett Slab 58, Jim Brown with a sticker auto on it.
- 3:57Somebody pulled from somebody else.
- 3:59I didn't realize too fast with the bidding.
- 4:01I didn't pay attention. No good.
- 4:03No good. That's a bad.
- 4:04That's a bad one. I think I lost.
- 4:06A couple of shekels on that one. My my my viewpoint, I've
- 4:12definitely evolved my viewpoint on autographs in general.
- 4:15I would say if you asked me like 2 years ago my opinion on
- 4:19autographed cards, baseball cards, football cards, whatever
- 4:22my opinion would be, well, you ruined the card by doing that.
- 4:25Like by by someone. Told you to have that opinion.
- 4:29You're probably right. But I'm telling you because,
- 4:31because when I, when we were, we're the same age when we were
- 4:34kids, they would say at least for rookie cards for sure as I
- 4:38remember it. But I, I wouldn't be surprised
- 4:40as well. You don't have to sign the card.
- 4:41It'll ruin the card car's worth more than the autograph that
- 4:45was. Wrong, buddy.
- 4:46Was that? Was that wrong?
- 4:50I agree. So I would say even until very
- 4:53recently, I wouldn't really go out of my way to buy autograph
- 4:56cards. And I still kind of am like
- 4:58that. But my feeling of like what I
- 5:01love the most in the autograph doing all of this.
- 5:06And I know it's, it's, it's a discipline and it takes time to
- 5:09do it, but doing TTM has been such a blast.
- 5:12It is unlocked this whole level of my collecting.
- 5:15And I know like, without going into too much detail, like I've
- 5:18had a little bit more time over the last couple months to be
- 5:21able to do it, just, you know, things.
- 5:24My schedule is a little bit more open at the moment.
- 5:26And that's part of why I've gotten into it and part of it is
- 5:29like, I haven't had my, you know, I've been, you know, try
- 5:32to be a little bit more careful with my hobby funds over the
- 5:35last couple months and, you know, doing TTM.
- 5:37Although I have to say, I went out today to Staples and I spent
- 5:40like $60.00 on TTM things, supplies I needed for TTM.
- 5:44That maybe is more about worldwide things.
- 5:46So we don't need to get into that, but it's, it is, it's been
- 5:52so fun to be the one who personally, like I, I put in the
- 5:57effort to get the autograph myself, whether it's, you know,
- 6:01and, and you're Matt, you're, you're an, you're an analog guy.
- 6:06So I think you can appreciate this.
- 6:07You're you're you're a guy that appreciates the sort of.
- 6:11If you're going to insult me, at least use words I can
- 6:13understand. You're not really a digital guy.
- 6:16You're more of an analog guy. You're more of a you have railed
- 6:19against modernity recently. You've said this on the hit
- 6:22list, other things. So what?
- 6:23So you know, what I do is I write a handwritten note with
- 6:27every single one of my TTMS. Oh, I sit this and write that
- 6:31write outs Mr. So and so. It's nice.
- 6:34You keep them really know throw out with the envelope I.
- 6:38My assumption is that probably a lot of them do throw it away,
- 6:41but my hopefully some of them appreciate it.
- 6:44No, it's not in the refrigerator.
- 6:47Well, either way, I think it's a nice thing 'cause I'm sending it
- 6:50to. I'm sending these to A to a
- 6:52member of an older generation when that type of thing was the
- 6:55norm most of. These guys, you spend the money.
- 6:59If they if they have a fee, yes. But I'm, but what I'm telling
- 7:03you is that most of these guys are in their 70s and 80s.
- 7:05Some of them in their in their 90s.
- 7:08How long is the secretary that signs the autograph?
- 7:10I'm just kidding. You're.
- 7:13Killing me, man, you're killing me.
- 7:15No, like, oh, and you're right. I don't know if they're signing
- 7:18it or not, but I I assume they are, but you know, I don't see
- 7:21them actually do it. But to me that is the.
- 7:23If that Maserati autograph comes in the mail next week.
- 7:27You know, it's yeah, it's it's no good.
- 7:31That to me is means more like if I opened a pack of cards and I
- 7:36pulled a sweet autograph out of it, that would be awesome.
- 7:39Like I don't know if you saw somebody pulled like the the
- 7:43Topps heritage like gold Roman Anthony, like one of one Otto
- 7:47like out of like a hobby box that they bought at GameStop or
- 7:50something like that. Yeah, I heard about that.
- 7:52I would have been that banger or something.
- 7:53I don't even think it was a hobby.
- 7:55That card looks sick too. Like that card, like a it's the
- 7:5877 style and Roman Anthony to me looks like he's a player from
- 8:02the 70s. Like I just thought it was it
- 8:04was awesome. He stays.
- 8:05Healthy boy. Me too.
- 8:07We need him. We can't.
- 8:08That's why we can't go to any games anymore because the game
- 8:10that we went to last year was a game where you got hurt.
- 8:14I mean, I'm going. You're not invited, but I'm
- 8:15going. Yeah.
- 8:18So, so if you pull, if you pull out of the pack, that's awesome
- 8:21to me. Like the especially like a
- 8:23sticker auto, like recent card. It's just not the same to me as
- 8:29an as an auto that I went out and got myself.
- 8:31Does nothing for me. So yeah, what are what are your
- 8:34thoughts about that? Yeah, there's nothing.
- 8:36Follow me. I'm I'm, I'm definitely vintage
- 8:39card signed ballpoint pen. I'm in.
- 8:43I'd I'd prefer not a blue Sharpie that, you know, couldn't
- 8:49have been signed until 1997. You know, I just, I hate that.
- 8:54I'll take it. I'm the right guy and
- 8:56everything, but I hate it. I hate it.
- 8:59Yeah, that's right. I.
- 9:00Guess yeah, I so definitely like the the original era like
- 9:05ballpoint pen signatures on the cars like the ones that you know
- 9:10the great ones from Jackie Robinson like that our our
- 9:13friend Tony Southern collector has been so fortunate enough to
- 9:16to add to his collection. I mean, those are incredible.
- 9:19Like that's the, that is the, I agree that that's the pinnacle,
- 9:22like the, the, the period, like time period signed card from
- 9:28that time of those cards, like fifties, 60s, whatever cards
- 9:32like that's the top of the list. Like that's the best stuff that
- 9:35you can get. I would say that like for me and
- 9:39I and so, yeah, like a lot of my 68 TTMS, most of them are,
- 9:43they're cards from 1968 signed in 2026 with like a Sharpie.
- 9:49But there are autographs I got myself.
- 9:50Like, I don't know, like I wouldn't buy, I wouldn't go out
- 9:53right now and buy a, a sign because I'm looking at one right
- 9:57now. Like I wouldn't go out and buy a
- 9:59graded signed 68 tops Jim Palmer that was signed like clearly it
- 10:05was signed with a Sharpie. Like I wouldn't buy one of
- 10:07those, but I got that sign myself.
- 10:10It was from myself. So, so to me, it's more special
- 10:14and I'm not looking to, you know, and and again, all cards,
- 10:17every card that we don't. What's that?
- 10:19What's Palmer charge? 10 bucks he's cheap.
- 10:22Wow. Compared to a lot of and you can
- 10:24send the rookie card. Yeah, I don't think he charges
- 10:27extra for the rookie. I don't think so.
- 10:29Wow, that's not bad. I, I, I felt, I feel like, yeah,
- 10:36like if you bought me doing that, doing this project and
- 10:39getting them signed is, is it's been the fun part of it.
- 10:43But yeah. And you were talking about the
- 10:44your Reggie White good cards like no, you were talking about.
- 10:49Yeah, yeah. So he's a, he's a great example
- 10:51because because he died young and he he died right when
- 10:56sticker autos came out or pack pole autos came out.
- 10:59So he has like one year of sticker autos, maybe 2.
- 11:02So he has just just two or three 3 or 4 cards that auto they're
- 11:06very, you know, limited print run obviously.
- 11:09And his sticker autos and I get it because he doesn't have a lot
- 11:12of sticker autos go for huge money.
- 11:15But guess what else doesn't have a lot of on card autos, in
- 11:18person autos because it just wasn't a thing as crazy as now.
- 11:23And and they sell for two to $500.00 for the in person auto
- 11:27for a guy who died very young and was able to hold that card
- 11:32versus a sticker auto that came out, you know, right after he
- 11:35died or, or right when he died. I just, I don't know the the in
- 11:40person auto. The guy held it, you know, a kid
- 11:42probably handed it to him. I think it's really much better.
- 11:47Yeah, yeah. No, I, I I agree with that.
- 11:50I mean those those new sticker autos that the Reggie White ones
- 11:53for example go for $2000. That's correct.
- 11:56The guy didn't even touch the card.
- 11:58Yeah, right. You know, yeah, yeah, No, I I
- 12:01think it's, it's different strokes for different folks.
- 12:03Like if you if you like the the pack pulled stuff like I don't,
- 12:07you know, that's that's your prerogative.
- 12:09I don't, I don't, I don't you, you can like what you like, but
- 12:14I just it goes back to to. Me it's like.
- 12:17Did the did the guy, did the guy, did the guy touch the card
- 12:22or not? Like to me, I think that is
- 12:24actually really important. Did the guy touch the card And
- 12:28how do you feel about somebody? My hands.
- 12:32They can. There's obviously there's
- 12:35nothing wrong with this, but how do you feel about the idea of
- 12:37somebody like so? So one of the examples that they
- 12:39gave was that Adam had one of these early 90s cards, the ones
- 12:43that were like the Mantle and Griffey, and it was just signed
- 12:49by the like, I think some of them I, it was, I think it was
- 12:52must have been upper deck, right, Like they did.
- 12:54Some of them were just signed by one or the other and some of
- 12:57them were signed by both. He had one of the ones that was
- 13:00signed by Mantle that was not signed by Griffey that he, I
- 13:05guess he sold it and apparently the guy that bought it is going
- 13:09to like crack it out and send it to Griffey to try to get it
- 13:12signed. How do you feel about that
- 13:14'cause that was like a pack pulled.
- 13:16It was, it was a pack. Awesome.
- 13:17I think that's awesome. Really interesting.
- 13:19I think that's so cool. Those guys disagree.
- 13:22Really interesting. I think that's so cool.
- 13:25I think that is so, so cool. I think it's stupid that Tops or
- 13:30Upper Deck released that card with one guy signing it.
- 13:34I think that's absurd. I think it's so, so stupid.
- 13:39I love that this guy's like, finishing what they could have
- 13:43done. Interesting.
- 13:46Yeah, yeah, yeah, for sure. I I don't have a.
- 13:48Yeah, I don't have a. Again, if it you have your card,
- 13:50it goes back to the thing we were talking.
- 13:52About well, what if like so that card came out in 92.
- 13:54Let's say Mantle doesn't die for three more years.
- 13:56If somebody went and grabbed his auto on the Griffey, only one,
- 14:01you'd be against that. I'm not saying I'm against it,
- 14:06I'm just saying like I'm fine with it if you, if you own the
- 14:09card, you do what you want with it.
- 14:11Like that's I don't have, I don't have a problem with it as
- 14:13long as, you know, does it have to be some sort of if you get it
- 14:18graded after you do that, does it have to be sort of designated
- 14:21that it what, because I think what they did was that they,
- 14:23they must have they, I think they serial numbered each of the
- 14:26cards in terms of like, was it just signed by Mantle?
- 14:29Was it just signed by Griffey? Was it signed by both?
- 14:32So I think that if you tried to, I would be interested if you got
- 14:35the one of those cards that was only signed by Mantle, signed by
- 14:37Griffey and then you tried to grade it like what would how
- 14:40would? They yeah, I bet.
- 14:41I'm sure PSAPSA would have a designation about how it went
- 14:44down, but I think it's very cool because.
- 14:48Here's what is. The first thing that came to
- 14:49mind and why I went oh, that's cool, is because when Griffey,
- 14:53if Griffey gets that card in his hand, he's going to go, oh,
- 14:56that's cool. Yeah, so there you go.
- 14:59He's going to. Oh, I remember when I signed to
- 15:00these. Do you know what I mean?
- 15:02Like, oh, it's a shame Mickey didn't sign.
- 15:04So like, you're going to get something out of the guy like
- 15:07the signer, and I think that's cool and he's going to think
- 15:09it's cool. It's cool.
- 15:11Yeah. He's not going to think, oh,
- 15:13these again. The pack, the pack pulled, yeah,
- 15:16the pack pulled autos from that time period, like early 90s,
- 15:20like the upper deck ones. And I guess tops must have
- 15:22gotten into it too. Those are all on card autos.
- 15:24There's no, those are not stick around.
- 15:26And so that's what's, and then what's cool to me is that a lot
- 15:28of those, I'm sure some of those are still floating around, you
- 15:31know, like some of those like in packs, you know?
- 15:34Yeah, yeah, yeah. I actually, I wanted, I wanted
- 15:36to because it would have been more for our our audience on
- 15:40YouTube. I wanted to see if I had one of
- 15:42those packs and open it live and see if I could pull one.
- 15:45But I unfortunately. I have not.
- 15:47I have not. Unfortunately I don't have any
- 15:49of the upper deck packs at the moment that had.
- 15:51Those upper deck baseball ones are beautiful.
- 15:53The the Williams and Nolan Ryan, Reggie Jackson, all those are
- 15:56beautiful, beautiful cards. Yeah, yeah, if you're going to
- 16:00get pack pulled auto, those were the ones for sure.
- 16:03All right. Have we sufficiently made people
- 16:07enough people mad today? You.
- 16:09You. Maybe you?
- 16:11Oh yeah, because I was the one that brought up brought it up
- 16:13right. OK, I got a by the time people
- 16:17listen to this well, they probably won't know this, but I
- 16:20did get AI did get like Tony Larussa 68 tops back in the mail
- 16:26signed to that or yesterday or no, I guess it would have been
- 16:29Sunday. I opened it yesterday, so that
- 16:32was cool. Oh.
- 16:33She got that back to you fast. Oh, no, actually he got it was
- 16:38it took him a little over three months to get it back to me,
- 16:41which is kind of the longest that I've had so far.
- 16:44I had to, you know, what was interesting was that you sent it
- 16:46his sending it to him was like care of the White Sox, which is
- 16:50interesting because he hasn't been their manager for a few
- 16:52years. So they must.
- 16:54You send it to the White Sox and then?
- 16:56They just go pay that later to sign.
- 16:58It it took three months to get it back.
- 17:05All right, like comment, subscribe.
- 17:07Like comment, subscribe and and what?
- 17:10I'm just getting a card so that the people that are watching
- 17:12that can like post. What do you say?
- 17:13What do you say? Like, comment, subscribe and
- 17:16collect if you just let me say it.
