Speaker 3: Greenbrier are not the headline news We've been seeing an
• 1:17
Speaker 3: actual conference going on. He's the current revenue secretary for
• 1:20
Speaker 3: the great state of West Virginia. He's a candidate for
• 1:22
Speaker 3: West Virginia Treasurer. Larry Pack How are you, sir?
• 1:24
Speaker 4: Good morning, Oh, good morning, how are you.
• 1:28
Speaker 5: Big doings down here today, sir?
• 1:31
Speaker 4: All right, great now, No, it's good. Good to be
• 1:33
Speaker 4: at the Green Broo. A lot of a lot of
• 1:35
Speaker 4: excitement at the business summit this year, without a doubt
• 1:40
Speaker 4: my practice, the chambers talking about they have almost doubled
• 1:44
Speaker 4: the number of members of the last few years. It
• 1:47
Speaker 4: really speaks to the West Rginia economy, speaks of the
• 1:50
Speaker 4: success of governor justice programs and the legislature programs over
• 1:54
Speaker 4: the last number of years. So a lot of a
• 1:57
Speaker 4: lot of excitement. There's gonna be some really, I think
• 2:00
Speaker 4: the outstanding news Governor will announce today as far as
• 2:04
Speaker 4: new jobs coming to West Virginia. So it's gonna be
• 2:06
Speaker 4: a big day for West Virginia. And it's also beautiful,
• 2:09
Speaker 4: so it's it's sunny and hot and and just beautiful.
• 2:13
Speaker 4: And bring back down this morning.
• 2:14
Speaker 3: Yeah, everybody needs to be well hydrated in and out
• 2:16
Speaker 3: of conferences today. Let's start big picture though, and then
• 2:19
Speaker 3: we'll come back to some of the politics of the day.
• 2:21
Speaker 3: You're a committee member, you're part of the state apparatus
• 2:25
Speaker 3: of the GOP. We've all seen the last historically, because
• 2:28
Speaker 3: I'm a history nerd, the last twenty twenty five years,
• 2:31
Speaker 3: the GOP flipping West Virginia from cobalt blue to deep
• 2:34
Speaker 3: red is really kind of unprecedented in American history if
• 2:37
Speaker 3: you really think about it, look past this election for
• 2:40
Speaker 3: just a minute, because you're with those leaders who are
• 2:41
Speaker 3: going to be leading this party for the next I
• 2:43
Speaker 3: have ten to fifteen years. What do you think is
• 2:46
Speaker 3: the key for those future years to continue the electoral
• 2:50
Speaker 3: success that the GOP has had the last twenty twenty
• 2:52
Speaker 3: five years, turning West Virginia into a Republican's stalwart state.
• 2:56
Speaker 4: Yeah, it has been phenomenal. I've been involved in Westinia
• 2:59
Speaker 4: politics since since I was since I was a kid,
• 3:02
Speaker 4: so a long long time. And when I started, it
• 3:06
Speaker 4: was the Republicans that were in the thirty percent range. Uh,
• 3:10
Speaker 4: and now it's totally accepting it's on the Democrat side.
• 3:13
Speaker 4: I really think the difference is that, you know, when
• 3:16
Speaker 4: I was a kid, the Republican was really was known
• 3:20
Speaker 4: as the as the country club party.
• 3:23
  Speaker 6: Uh.
• 3:23
Speaker 4: And that's not who we are. Mat fact, I make
• 3:25
Speaker 4: it make a good argument that's where the Democrats are.
• 3:27
Speaker 4: So we're we're now the party of the working man.
• 3:29
Speaker 4: We're the Party of common sense. I think as long
• 3:32
Speaker 4: as we keep regular West Virginia values, common sense values,
• 3:37
Speaker 4: we continue to encourage freedom, to encourage people to be
• 3:42
Speaker 4: able to live their lives where they want to live
• 3:44
Speaker 4: their lives, I think we'll stay and we'll stay in
• 3:48
Speaker 4: fire in West Virginia and the Republicans will continue to prevail.
• 3:52
Speaker 4: But if we lose our way and we uh uh,
• 3:55
Speaker 4: let's swamp take over, or we think it's all about
• 3:58
Speaker 4: us and not about as governor justin say Tooby and Edith,
• 4:04
Speaker 4: then we'll find ourselves in the same shape that the
• 4:06
Speaker 4: Democrats certainly or find ourselves there today.
• 4:12
Speaker 3: Yeah, Larry Pack joining us on five to eighty Live,
• 4:14
Speaker 3: you touched on it. It's inarguable one of the big
• 4:16
Speaker 3: demographic groups of electors that the Donald Trump era has
• 4:20
Speaker 3: changed is what they used to call the blue dog Democrats.
• 4:23
Speaker 3: That was the core base of West Virginia voters. That's
• 4:25
Speaker 3: what I grew up with. When I registered to vote
• 4:28
Speaker 3: for the first time, you know, they didn't even ask
• 4:30
Speaker 3: me which party you're going to vote for? Right that
• 4:32
Speaker 3: back in nineteen ninety eight, that was my first election.
• 4:35
Speaker 3: That's how fast these things have changed. Yeah, but just
• 4:38
Speaker 3: talk to that for just a second, because here's the thing.
• 4:42
Speaker 3: We don't have the same working force and those blue
• 4:45
Speaker 3: collar workers you're talking about. We now have more service
• 4:47
Speaker 3: based workers. West Virginia has a lot of healthcare based workers,
• 4:51
Speaker 3: a lot of state workers, teachers and people working for
• 4:53
Speaker 3: the states and various things. That's the new economy, along
• 4:56
Speaker 3: with tourism and things. And that goes directly what you're saying.
• 4:59
Speaker 3: The electorate of West Virginia has changed. That's why the
• 5:02
  Speaker 3: voting has changed.
• 5:04
Speaker 4: I think the electorate has changed, but we're still the same. Uh,
• 5:08
Speaker 4: we still have the same value as I think. Really
• 5:10
Speaker 4: the values that have changed is not so much the
• 5:12
Speaker 4: values of West Virginia's it's it's the values of the
• 5:14
Speaker 4: Democrat Party Uh. When you know, when the Democrat Party
• 5:18
Speaker 4: becomes more involved and telling us how to live, how
• 5:21
Speaker 4: to think, what to do. Uh, when they lose when
• 5:24
Speaker 4: they started losing their common sense, That's when they lost
• 5:26
Speaker 4: to West Virginia. When they when Democrat parties said no
• 5:30
Speaker 4: to foster fuels. You know, they started first there on
• 5:32
Speaker 4: alumna cold and natural gas and oil. When they started,
• 5:37
Speaker 4: you know, basically talking about open borders and allowing the
• 5:39
Speaker 4: borders to be open, they started losing people. Uh when
• 5:43
Speaker 4: when basically they they proper you know, abortion, not not
• 5:47
Speaker 4: just on demand, but up until the day of birth.
• 5:50
  Speaker 7: Uh.
• 5:50
Speaker 4: So I think it's it's the out of touch national
• 5:53
Speaker 4: Democrat Party that changed that moved West Virginia and the
• 5:56
Speaker 4: Republican Party much more, really more so than what the
• 5:59
Speaker 4: republic they can do.
• 6:01
Speaker 5: Yeah, let's talk to local and not the national.
• 6:04
Speaker 3: Though you're running for treasury. This is an important job.
• 6:08
Speaker 3: This is a really make or break job for a state.
• 6:10
Speaker 3: The financial health of the state. We see the buzzwords taxes,
• 6:13
Speaker 3: tax cuts, revenue, all that goes through the Treasurer's office.
• 6:17
Speaker 3: But how would you define that role when you're talking
• 6:19
Speaker 3: to just the general public, Because you're technically under the headline,
• 6:23
Speaker 3: you're in charge of all that money, but all that
• 6:25
Speaker 3: money's got to go through the legislature. The governor's agenda
• 6:28
Speaker 3: has a lot of say on that money, all those
• 6:30
Speaker 3: organizations and all the parts of government. You know, there's
• 6:32
Speaker 3: a lot of mouths defeat and ultimately you're also responsible
• 6:36
Speaker 3: to the people of West Virginia for how that money
• 6:38
Speaker 3: is getting spent. How do you define that role? Because
• 6:40
Speaker 3: it sounds simple, but that's a very complicated, very intricate
• 6:43
Speaker 3: part of our West Virginia state government that you're seeking
• 6:45
  Speaker 3: office for.
• 6:47
Speaker 4: Yeah, I mean, I think we're very blessed that our
• 6:48
Speaker 4: fore fathers put when they design this, you know, the
• 6:52
Speaker 4: governance for state with Virginia, they put a lot of
• 6:54
Speaker 4: checks and balances in it, so we don't have kings.
• 6:58
Speaker 4: So really get anything done, you have to work with
• 7:00
Speaker 4: a lot of different a lot of different elected offices
• 7:02
Speaker 4: and so forth. But when I talk to people, what
• 7:06
Speaker 4: I what I talk to people is in simple terms,
• 7:08
Speaker 4: I say that anywhere that the State of West Virginia
• 7:12
Speaker 4: takes your money with speez or taxes, spend your money,
• 7:17
Speaker 4: or invest your money, that's the place that the Treasure
• 7:20
Speaker 4: Office will weigh in. And in addition to that, how
• 7:24
Speaker 4: we borrow money, uh, the treasure would weigh in. So
• 7:28
Speaker 4: so it's basically the chief financial officer of the state.
• 7:31
Speaker 4: So anywhere we're spending money, borrowing money, taking your money,
• 7:35
Speaker 4: the treasure needs to weigh in. Sometimes we have more
• 7:37
Speaker 4: authority than others that we always have an opinion, and
• 7:40
Speaker 4: we have the ability to influence. We believe the basic
• 7:45
Speaker 4: the affairs of the day. I think the Treasure's office
• 7:48
Speaker 4: takes a more longer term view states finances, uh, the legislature,
• 7:53
Speaker 4: and I think the governor's more everyday view. So so
• 7:57
Speaker 4: we have the ability to look trends and look at
• 8:00
Speaker 4: where the state of West Virginia has been going. And
• 8:03
Speaker 4: I would profer that if if, if the previous treasures
• 8:06
Speaker 4: have done this again there's Treasure morris On a really
• 8:08
Speaker 4: wonderful job, but treasers over the years have done that,
• 8:10
Speaker 4: then maybe we wouldn't have found ourselves in some of
• 8:13
Speaker 4: the some of the predicaments that that we are. So
• 8:15
Speaker 4: we expect to have very strong office. We expect the
• 8:18
Speaker 4: weigh in on basically all financial things going on with
• 8:21
Speaker 4: the state. But we also have you know, we have
• 8:23
Speaker 4: things that we that we run. We run the savings programs.
• 8:27
Speaker 4: Right the five twenty nine, the jump starts West Virginia
• 8:29
Speaker 4: eveles unclaimed property things we do. We're the bank for
• 8:34
Speaker 4: the State of West Virginia, so so we do things
• 8:36
Speaker 4: at a bank that a bank would do. So so
• 8:39
Speaker 4: we got a lot of stuff going on Hope Scholarship.
• 8:41
Speaker 4: You know, we're the administrative administrator of that. Uh you know,
• 8:45
Speaker 4: as we all know that the program is really gonna
• 8:48
Speaker 4: going to explode in fiscal twenty six, so we get
• 8:51
Speaker 4: it ready for that. So there's a lot of different
• 8:52
  Speaker 4: things we're doing. We have a small group. It's a
• 8:55
Speaker 4: very efficient office as a treasure treasure morries put together.
• 8:59
Speaker 4: He is given me complete access to the Treasure's office,
• 9:02
Speaker 4: so they're prepping me. I'm meeting with them at least
• 9:05
Speaker 4: once a week getting ready for it. But in the meantime,
• 9:09
Speaker 4: Governor Justice said is running the finish line and we've
• 9:11
Speaker 4: got a lot of work to do and not learned
• 9:13
Speaker 4: the Governor's office but also Secretary Revenue. So it's a
• 9:15
Speaker 4: busy time, but it's a good time for West Virginia
• 9:18
Speaker 4: because we have a lot of positive movement in state
• 9:21
  Speaker 4: of West Virginia.
• 9:23
Speaker 3: Larry Pack, current Revenue Secretary seeking to be the treasure
• 9:26
Speaker 3: of West Virginia, joining us on five to eighty Live.
• 9:28
Speaker 5: You just touched on it.
• 9:29
Speaker 3: Look, campaign, you have to do certain things to get elected,
• 9:32
Speaker 3: but once you're elected, a lot of governing is not
• 9:35
Speaker 3: just what you say in the campaign. It's those relationships
• 9:37
Speaker 3: you just touched on it. Talk about the relationships of
• 9:40
Speaker 3: dealing with the governor, dealing with the legislature, dealing with
• 9:43
Speaker 3: the other departments of government. Because people hear something and
• 9:45
Speaker 3: you've seen it on social media. You're active on social media,
• 9:47
Speaker 3: you've probably heard it talking to people. As you've campaigned
• 9:50
Speaker 3: around the state, people say, well, we got this surplus,
• 9:52
  Speaker 3: why aren't we spending it on X, Y and z.
• 9:54
Speaker 3: Because there's always some pressing matter for something. Now, in
• 9:57
Speaker 3: our own personal finances, we understand if you spend and
• 10:00
Speaker 3: all your savings on whatever, you quickly run out of savings.
• 10:03
  Speaker 4: That's right.
• 10:04
Speaker 5: The state has the same problem. But at the same time.
• 10:07
Speaker 3: There's very serious issues with the state. That's part of
• 10:10
Speaker 3: your role. You have to talk to the governor, you
• 10:12
Speaker 3: have to advocate. Sometimes you have to push back, what's
• 10:15
Speaker 3: your standard on Okay, this is actually an emergency. We
• 10:18
Speaker 3: need to dip into that surplus or the rainy day
• 10:20
Speaker 3: fund or whatever the case may be. What's your standard
• 10:23
  Speaker 3: looking at it?
• 10:24
Speaker 5: Because the have and that's the question people have.
• 10:28
Speaker 4: Well, I think I think so much of a perspective,
• 10:32
Speaker 4: So where where do you start? Where do you start?
• 10:34
Speaker 4: As far as we have, you know, the certain amount
• 10:37
Speaker 4: of money, and what do you do with So the
• 10:38
Speaker 4: money comes into state government, we got three things we
• 10:40
Speaker 4: can do with it. We can spend it, we can
• 10:43
Speaker 4: save it, or we can give it back and so
• 10:46
Speaker 4: so so I think what the governor has taught me
• 10:50
Speaker 4: is to first look at any issue from the perspective
• 10:53
Speaker 4: of again I'll go back to Toby Media. In other words,
• 10:55
Speaker 4: our neighbors, the folks you grew up with, So what
• 10:59
Speaker 4: is the best decision for them? Always try to look
• 11:02
Speaker 4: at the each each each decision to each each area
• 11:05
Speaker 4: for that because again, governing, it's its priorities and so
• 11:08
Speaker 4: so in one hand, from a revenue standpoint, we live
• 11:12
Speaker 4: in a competitive world or a competitive country. So if
• 11:15
Speaker 4: we're out an outlier on any tax policy, uh, on
• 11:19
Speaker 4: really any policy, uh, other people are competing against us,
• 11:22
Speaker 4: and they're pointing that out. So so we got to
• 11:24
Speaker 4: work really really hard to be competitive with other states.
• 11:28
Speaker 4: But then when it comes to the money that we have,
• 11:30
Speaker 4: we have to really make sure that we're spending judiciously.
• 11:34
  Speaker 8: UH.
• 11:34
Speaker 4: Again, we all spend our money, our own money in
• 11:37
Speaker 4: much different ways, and we spend other people's money. That's
• 11:40
Speaker 4: just just human natures. So so we have to make
• 11:42
Speaker 4: sure that we're spending it like it's like it's our money.
• 11:45
Speaker 4: We're making the right decisions. So what I like to
• 11:48
Speaker 4: look at is is when we see a need, a
• 11:51
Speaker 4: need we have to address. So in this last week,
• 11:53
Speaker 4: the governors has has addressed additional money for UH for
• 11:58
Speaker 4: waiver programs. You know, people can stay in their homes
• 12:01
Speaker 4: for child care. A lot of times is what happens
• 12:05
Speaker 4: in government. There's a certain perspective or a certain way
• 12:08
Speaker 4: that people think of it, said, well, that's just additional
• 12:10
Speaker 4: government spending. I think my way is that what is
• 12:12
Speaker 4: it that we're doing that we don't necessarily.
• 12:15
  Speaker 9: Have to do?
• 12:16
Speaker 4: And so I spent a lot of time over the
• 12:18
Speaker 4: last two years in the Governor's Office Secuary Revenue of
• 12:22
Speaker 4: identifying things that I don't think government has to do.
• 12:26
Speaker 4: The governments Daniels of Indiana back in the day used
• 12:28
Speaker 4: to say, hey, if I can find it in the
• 12:29
Speaker 4: phone book, the state of Indiana shouldn't be doing it.
• 12:32
Speaker 4: And so we're trying to identify things like that because
• 12:35
Speaker 4: we will have additional needs. There'll be things come up
• 12:37
Speaker 4: that we don't we don't think about. You know, for example,
• 12:42
Speaker 4: government justice has been a big unless. They sure have
• 12:44
Speaker 4: been a big backer of money for food banks. Right, Well,
• 12:47
Speaker 4: that's something ten years ago, twenty years ago wasn't a
• 12:50
Speaker 4: big need. It is now in need. And there's a
• 12:53
Speaker 4: thousand reasons why. But where Governor Justice comes down on it,
• 12:57
Speaker 4: and I totally agree with him, that does it almost
• 12:59
Speaker 4: doesn't matter why people we're hungry. We've got to try,
• 13:01
Speaker 4: we've got to see so so so so Again, I
• 13:04
Speaker 4: think I thank you when when you have to add
• 13:06
Speaker 4: government programs, you need to look and see what other
• 13:09
Speaker 4: programs you can do more efficiently, uh or programs maybe
• 13:12
Speaker 4: we don't need to do that the private sector can do.
• 13:14
Speaker 4: So that's kind of my perspective way I'm looking at it,
• 13:18
Speaker 4: and I think there's just a lot of stuff to
• 13:19
Speaker 4: uncover and to think about. And as treasure I may
• 13:23
Speaker 4: not be the decider on these issues, but I can
• 13:26
Speaker 4: be the person that brings them up and asks the
• 13:29
Speaker 4: deciders to consider that have you thought about this? Have
• 13:31
Speaker 4: you thought about that? So I'm excited about that, and
• 13:34
Speaker 4: I'm very excited about the UH the next next and
• 13:38
Speaker 4: in the next four months, but the next four years,
• 13:40
Speaker 4: I think it's some one of you a really great time.
• 13:42
Speaker 4: We're going some governor justice and some common sense to
• 13:45
Speaker 4: to d c uh Patrick Morrison is going to come
• 13:48
Speaker 4: in and bring his conservative principles and so we're going
• 13:51
Speaker 4: to be you know, to me, it's going to be
• 13:52
Speaker 4: Jim Justice too. We're going to continue to move West
• 13:54
Speaker 4: Virginia forward. We have new legislators and new ideas coming,
• 13:59
Speaker 4: and I think we're will make a lot of progress
• 14:01
Speaker 4: in the last in the next four years, and I'm
• 14:03
Speaker 4: hoping that we make as much as you did in
• 14:04
Speaker 4: the last four years.
• 14:06
Speaker 3: Larry pat join us for I let you go onond reason.
• 14:08
Speaker 3: I follow you on social media on Twitter. You don't
• 14:10
Speaker 3: do all politics. You do something I do. I like
• 14:12
Speaker 3: to do food. You put all these great nature scenes
• 14:14
Speaker 3: because you're an avid hiker. Now I've got high standards.
• 14:17
Speaker 3: I'm from Somersville, Summersville Lake I went to church and
• 14:19
Speaker 3: High Cafette County. The New River Gorge is basically home
• 14:23
Speaker 3: to me. Those two are hard to tip. But give
• 14:25
Speaker 3: me one or two of your favorite hikes in the county.
• 14:27
Speaker 3: Not today because it's really really high, but in the
• 14:29
Speaker 3: state of West Virginia. Give us one or two of
• 14:31
  Speaker 3: your favorite hikes.
• 14:32
Speaker 4: My favorite and I love hiking and love getting outdoors,
• 14:35
Speaker 4: and so there's so many hikes. But my favorite hike
• 14:40
Speaker 4: is about a five mile hike that's in the big
• 14:43
Speaker 4: draft of wilderness, so basically Anthony's Creek in Greenborough County,
• 14:47
  Speaker 4: and it's a it's a five mile loop pike that
• 14:50
Speaker 4: you go across the bridge there on Anthony's Creek at
• 14:54
Speaker 4: the at the campground, and it's you know, it goes around,
• 14:58
Speaker 4: it goes along It's creek for a while, and there's
• 15:01
Speaker 4: a big draft for a while, and then you go
• 15:03
Speaker 4: up on the hill and you get some beautiful views
• 15:05
Speaker 4: and you come back around. I think that's just absolutely phenomenal.
• 15:09
Speaker 4: But I love hoot loop pikes. But we you know,
• 15:12
Speaker 4: I like all around West Virginia. There are so many
• 15:14
Speaker 4: beautiful spots. One thing my wife and I have started
• 15:17
Speaker 4: this year is we've taken advantage of the West Virginia
• 15:20
Speaker 4: Tourism Waterfall Trail and so there's about forty two forty
• 15:23
Speaker 4: three trail the waterfalls around the state of Virginia. This
• 15:26
Speaker 4: is not the best time to go, by the way,
• 15:28
Speaker 4: and we said about half of them and we're going
• 15:30
Speaker 4: to finish it before the end of the year. And
• 15:32
Speaker 4: the great thing about the waterfall trails not just the scenery.
• 15:35
Speaker 4: It's not just the waterfalls, but it takes you to
• 15:38
Speaker 4: places in West Virginia that even a lifelong West Virginia
• 15:41
Speaker 4: have not been before. So we've absolutely enjoyed that. I
• 15:44
Speaker 4: encourage people to take advantage of that and experience the
• 15:47
Speaker 4: waterfall Trail. You'll and again you'll not You're not regretted,
• 15:52
Speaker 4: and that just opens up other areas. It's like, God, guys,
• 15:55
Speaker 4: I like to come back here in hike here and
• 15:56
Speaker 4: night there. Even like Pikes, I mean Huwlks Nest for example,
• 15:59
  Speaker 4: it's got waterfalls. I've been the Hawks and that's a
• 16:01
Speaker 4: thousand times ever since I was a kid, but I've
• 16:04
Speaker 4: never walked down those trails and walked through those waterfalls.
• 16:06
Speaker 4: And we did that early in the summer, and that
• 16:08
Speaker 4: was a blessing for sure.
• 16:10
Speaker 3: Yeah, I got to write a piece for that. For
• 16:11
Speaker 3: the forributing, I'll put a link on my social media.
• 16:13
Speaker 3: Waterfall Trail is one of the better things the tourism
• 16:16
Speaker 3: has come up. It's all interactive. Larry Pack, appreciate your time, sir.

Speaker 3: That's why we wanted to talk a little bigger picture.
• 16:42
Speaker 3: Dale Cooper sitting with me, Dale, I find it amazing
• 16:45
Speaker 3: with things like this. I look, I grew up in
• 16:48
Speaker 3: West Virginia. I remember when it was exactly the opposite
• 16:50
Speaker 3: of what it is right now.
• 16:52
Speaker 5: Larry's a little older than me. We won't say how old.
• 16:54
Speaker 3: He's a little bit older than me, and you're just
• 16:56
Speaker 3: you and me. Are about the same age. If you
• 16:59
Speaker 3: told nineteen nine Andy that, you know, it would be
• 17:02
Speaker 3: the absolute opposite. I would have thought you were nuch
• 17:04
Speaker 3: to that first election. That's the Clinton midterm, that's the
• 17:06
Speaker 3: impeachment election. That's the first election I registered to vote.
• 17:08
Speaker 3: You want to talk about an important election.
• 17:10
Speaker 6: Right right right before that? Yeah, the same thing. My
• 17:13
Speaker 6: first election was one right before that, and same thing
• 17:15
Speaker 6: it was. You know, the state was basically in default mode,
• 17:18
Speaker 6: which it is again for the most part. It's just
• 17:20
  Speaker 6: it's it's it's completely changed. It's one hundred and eighty
• 17:22
  Speaker 6: degree turn.
• 17:23
Speaker 5: It's amazing. So here's what we're going to do.

• 21:03
Speaker 3: Jeep Ram dot com. Let's bring in Dale Cooper. I
• 21:09
Speaker 3: amazed it by this because yesterday you had a delegate
• 21:11
Speaker 3: Push Can and of course he's also the head of
• 21:13
Speaker 3: the Democratic Party. We were just talking about it, the
• 21:15
Speaker 3: Democratic Party. If you go back and look at like
• 21:17
Speaker 3: ninety six, ninety eight, the delegate count, the statewide count,
• 21:21
Speaker 3: whatever you want to do, it's completely flipped Democrat to
• 21:24
Speaker 3: Republican to what it is now. And there was a
• 21:27
Speaker 3: lot of strong reaction to your conversation yesterday, wasn't there deal.
• 21:30
Speaker 6: Yeah, there was quite a bit of it. Yeah, it
• 21:32
Speaker 6: was back when I was growing up, and first it
• 21:35
Speaker 6: came to voting. Of course, it was basically a uniparty.
• 21:37
  Speaker 11: You know.
• 21:37
Speaker 6: I mean you had slightly more conservative Democrats and you
• 21:41
Speaker 6: had conservative Democrats. I mean, that was basically the way
• 21:45
Speaker 6: that it worked here when the Democratic Party was in
• 21:48
Speaker 6: charge in West Virginia. But there has been and I
• 21:50
Speaker 6: was out of state for a long period of time.
• 21:51
Speaker 6: I was out of state for about fourteen years before
• 21:53
Speaker 6: coming back here in twenty ten. So the switch to me,
• 21:58
Speaker 6: although I came back to visit my face family, was
• 22:00
Speaker 6: pretty pretty profound. When I got back here in twenty ten,
• 22:03
Speaker 6: it was a different state that I came back to.
• 22:05
Speaker 3: Yeah, it's been interesting because I left in two thousand
• 22:08
Speaker 3: because I joined the military. I left for enlistment out
• 22:11
Speaker 3: of Beckley on the one August two thousand, so it's
• 22:13
Speaker 3: really easy to remember that date.
• 22:15
Speaker 5: Of course, that was pre nine to eleven.
• 22:17
Speaker 3: A whole lot of things changed after nine to eleven,
• 22:19
Speaker 3: and that job changed very, very rapidly.
• 22:21
Speaker 5: But it's been amazing watching the change in it.
• 22:23
Speaker 3: But just take a look Tony the Taylor text line
• 22:26
Speaker 3: three or four nine, three five, five zero zero eight.
• 22:28
Speaker 3: If you want to respond to anything from yesterday, if
• 22:30
Speaker 3: you want to respond to Larry Pack and the things
• 22:32
Speaker 3: he said, big doings today, By the way, Hobby's going
• 22:34
Speaker 3: to be broadcasting live from that very conference. What's going
• 22:37
Speaker 3: on on the text line, Coop, Well, we've.
• 22:39
Speaker 6: Gotten a couple of things, and it seems like that
• 22:41
Speaker 6: our text line has kind of turned into a lot
• 22:43
Speaker 6: of the more liberal side of folks tend to use
• 22:46
Speaker 6: the text line a lot. You're welcome to call in
• 22:47
Speaker 6: if you'd like to. Two three zero four three four
• 22:49
Speaker 6: five fifty eight fifty eight three four five fifty eight fifty.
• 22:51
Speaker 6: This is a friendly place for everyone. We just want
• 22:52
Speaker 6: to hear what you have to say. We're not going
• 22:54
Speaker 6: to not going to hold your feet to the fire
• 22:56
Speaker 6: on it. We just want to want to hear what
• 22:57
Speaker 6: your opinions is. But this one has to do. This
• 22:59
Speaker 6: is from the seven six zero nine hundred Justice and Morrissey.
• 23:03
Speaker 6: Justice is likely in debt to the Saudi's and doesn't
• 23:05
Speaker 6: pay his workers insurance. Morrissey is a pain pill lobbyist
• 23:08
Speaker 6: and refuses to investigate Justice's insurance fraud. We don't need
• 23:11
Speaker 6: criminals as our senator and governor. But that's what we'll
• 23:13
  Speaker 6: get because it's West Virginia's. Because West Virginia's aren't to
• 23:17
Speaker 6: the brightest. And now that's it's uncalled for.
• 23:20
  Speaker 3: It's ridiculous and it's silly and it's childish. Let's just
• 23:22
Speaker 3: take a second and talk about the Jim Justice story,
• 23:24
Speaker 3: because here's what happened. And I'm guilty of this too,
• 23:27
Speaker 3: because I do media, So I'm guilty of two. When
• 23:29
Speaker 3: we cover a story day after day after day, and
• 23:31
Speaker 3: something like the Greenbrier issue and Jim Justice's finances and
• 23:34
Speaker 3: Governor Justice's business dealings, when you cover it day after
• 23:38
Speaker 3: day after day, coop, what happens is we start tunneling
• 23:41
Speaker 3: visioning on it. You just tunnel in on it, and
• 23:43
Speaker 3: you start getting into the minution. You kind of lose
• 23:45
Speaker 3: the big picture things. So let's let's just take a
• 23:46
Speaker 3: second here in zoom out for a second. Big businesses
• 23:50
Speaker 3: like what the Justice Family Corporation does. They carry heavy deadloads,
• 23:54
Speaker 3: it's just part of their business plan. They keep their
• 23:57
Speaker 3: actual assets very fluid by using debt to purchase things,
• 24:00
Speaker 3: and then you move your assets between your various assets.
• 24:03
Speaker 3: The Justice Family Company is something like one hundred different entities.
• 24:06
Speaker 3: They're very low key. They don't have a lot of
• 24:07
Speaker 3: buildings with their name on them like Donald Trump does,
• 24:10
Speaker 3: but they have all these different businesses and one of
• 24:13
Speaker 3: your ways. You can't conduct your business. It's not illegal.
• 24:16
Speaker 3: A lot of people do it this way. You can
• 24:18
Speaker 3: argue about the best way to do business or not,
• 24:20
Speaker 3: but this is legal. You carry a very high debt
• 24:22
Speaker 3: load and you can move that money around to various things. Now,
• 24:26
Speaker 3: the problem with that kind of business model is you
• 24:28
Speaker 3: got a number one, have enough capital to.
• 24:30
Speaker 5: Cover all that and too. It's kind of like a
• 24:32
  Speaker 5: bank run.
• 24:32
Speaker 3: If we all go to United National Bank or Wells
• 24:34
Speaker 3: Fargo or wherever you bank right now, if we all
• 24:37
Speaker 3: went there at the same time, No, they don't have
• 24:39
Speaker 3: enough money to cover everybody's That's why they pay you
• 24:41
Speaker 3: those fees to spread that money around.
• 24:43
  Speaker 10: Right.
• 24:44
Speaker 3: High leverage debt businesses are the same thing. If everybody
• 24:47
Speaker 3: called in their debts all at the same time, now
• 24:49
Speaker 3: all of a sudden got a problem because you can't
• 24:51
Speaker 3: move your actual assets around fast enough to match it.
• 24:54
Speaker 3: So adult point number one, No, there's no way that
• 24:58
Speaker 3: a story about the sitting governor soon to be US senator,
• 25:00
Speaker 3: all due respect to the electoral process. West Virginia's lectured
• 25:03
Speaker 3: is what it is a soon to be sitting senator
• 25:06
Speaker 3: that news is going to be political, not because of
• 25:09
Speaker 3: the way it's covered just because of who it's about. Yes,
• 25:11
Speaker 3: that's going to have political charge, and we see that
• 25:13
Speaker 3: on the text line, in the phone line and all
• 25:15
Speaker 3: the programming here on WCHS. But financially, what's happening and
• 25:19
Speaker 3: why this is happening so much now as two reasons.
• 25:21
Speaker 3: One is the politics make it much more high profile
• 25:25
Speaker 3: because it's on the news all the time, so it
• 25:26
Speaker 3: becomes a self feeding thing. And number two is if
• 25:29
Speaker 3: you what they're really trying to do with these financial
• 25:32
Speaker 3: companies is they're worried about getting paid back and they
• 25:36
Speaker 3: know that, like that bank run, if everybody goes to
• 25:38
Speaker 3: call those debts at the same time, there's not enough
• 25:41
Speaker 3: money to go around for everybody. So some of this
• 25:43
Speaker 3: is posturing and planning and strategy because one, they're trying
• 25:46
Speaker 3: to get public pressure through the media to get paid,
• 25:49
Speaker 3: which is working in some cases as it worked to
• 25:51
Speaker 3: settle down the debts for the Green Bars we saw
• 25:53
Speaker 3: this week. But number two is if they all get
• 25:56
Speaker 3: called in at once, then the justice family of companies,
• 25:58
Speaker 3: or at least the particulars involved can and have a
• 26:02
Speaker 3: legal right to, They could declare bankruptcy. And if you
• 26:04
Speaker 3: go to bankruptcy, then these all places and these entities
• 26:08
Speaker 3: would want to get in line because the trustee then
• 26:11
Speaker 3: decides who gets paid and how much, and they want
• 26:13
Speaker 3: to have prior standing in case it goes to court,
• 26:15
Speaker 3: whether in a bankruptcy or in an arbitration, whatever the
• 26:17
Speaker 3: case may be. So you have all those things going
• 26:20
Speaker 3: into one thing. Plus it's a political story, plus it's
• 26:22
  Speaker 3: an election year.
• 26:23
Speaker 5: Does that make sense, Coop? Did I lay that out
• 26:25
  Speaker 5: pretty clearly?
• 26:26
Speaker 6: I think it does. And there's I know just enough
• 26:30
Speaker 6: about high level of finance and things along those lines
• 26:32
Speaker 6: to know that there's so much that I don't understand.
• 26:34
Speaker 6: That when you don't know something and you backfill your
• 26:37
Speaker 6: lack of knowledge with, you know, sort of your disposition,
• 26:40
Speaker 6: sometimes you can lead yourself down a hole where all
• 26:42
Speaker 6: you're seeing is darkness and conspiracy. I'm not saying that
• 26:44
  Speaker 6: there's there, everything's above board. I'm just saying there's a
• 26:47
Speaker 6: lot I don't know, and it's really easy to fill
• 26:49
Speaker 6: that with with the worst possible things that being said
• 26:52
Speaker 6: on the flip side of things, the entire conversation about
• 26:55
Speaker 6: it being a political witch hunt or something like that.
• 26:57
Speaker 6: I have enough experience. I did mortgages free years, and
• 27:00
Speaker 6: again not at this high dollar value. But the act
• 27:04
Speaker 6: for the original potential bankruptcy, the act of or not
• 27:07
Speaker 6: being crusty, but foreclosure, the act of selling off bad
• 27:10
Speaker 6: paper to a bad debt servicer is very normal. It's
• 27:13
Speaker 6: an extraordinarily normal thing to do for a company that's
• 27:17
Speaker 6: holding on to bad paper, paper they haven't mettle to
• 27:19
Speaker 6: get payment on that they're struggling with, and to give
• 27:21
Speaker 6: that to a service er that specializes in bad debt
• 27:23
Speaker 6: is just normal. It happens to people all the time.
• 27:26
Speaker 6: It has happened to me before. If you've ever had
• 27:27
Speaker 6: your mortgage sold for some reason or another, maybe it
• 27:29
Speaker 6: wasn't for anything you did, but oftentimes if you are
• 27:31
Speaker 6: just a slow pay, you don't even have to be
• 27:33
Speaker 6: laid on something. You could be a slow pay and
• 27:34
Speaker 6: they're going to offset that debt because you're no longer
• 27:36
Speaker 6: a one prime paper to somebody that services that's something
• 27:39
Speaker 6: that's not a one prime paper. That's just something that happens.
• 27:42
Speaker 6: Most people don't get six opportunities to rescue the deal though,
• 27:45
Speaker 6: before it's sent into some sort of foreclosure. So that's
• 27:48
Speaker 6: the part of the things. I think that if you
• 27:51
Speaker 6: set the if you're doing honest dealings from the beginning,
• 27:55
Speaker 6: and then you come back to explain exactly how you did.
• 27:58
Speaker 6: I mean, frankly, the governor should have did that himself
• 27:59
Speaker 6: to degree, because that makes a lot of sense. But
• 28:02
Speaker 6: when you try to impeach the media right away for
• 28:04
Speaker 6: reporting fact based reporting, that's where things start to go
• 28:07
Speaker 6: a little bit sideways.
• 28:08
Speaker 3: I think if I was advising Governor Justice, and I'm not,
• 28:11
Speaker 3: but if he calls me, I'll give him this advice
• 28:13
Speaker 3: if he'd like to have it, because he is a
• 28:16
Speaker 3: very personable guy in person. He's a nice guy in person.
• 28:19
Speaker 3: He's good to people in person. We're talking about his
• 28:21
Speaker 3: business dealings here. This isn't a political statement. This is
• 28:24
Speaker 3: just how the world works. By denying the press the story.
• 28:29
Speaker 3: And you've done media long time, Coop, you can bag
• 28:31
Speaker 3: me up on this. And I've done media for about
• 28:32
Speaker 3: five six years now. If you don't feed the press anything,
• 28:36
Speaker 3: they're going to come looking for stuff. So if you
• 28:39
Speaker 3: just stonewall the press, you're actually defeating the point because
• 28:42
Speaker 3: you're going to keep the story going by not giving
• 28:43
Speaker 3: them anything. The other fair criticism of Governor Justice here
• 28:47
Speaker 3: is he had the option when he ran for governor,
• 28:49
Speaker 3: and there was a lot of press about this is
• 28:51
Speaker 3: do you put your assets in a blind trust? Because
• 28:53
Speaker 3: now he could just go to the microphone and go, hey,
• 28:55
Speaker 3: kids are running the We've got trustees, the kids are
• 28:57
Speaker 3: running the business. I have nothing to do with it,
• 28:59
Speaker 3: and that's It's the end of the story. He could
• 29:01
Speaker 3: have also done that. He's running as a politician on
• 29:04
Speaker 3: his business acumen, and now is his record on governor.
• 29:06
Speaker 3: So it's fair game because of the situation he put
• 29:09
Speaker 3: himself in. Now, Now, conspiracy theory is like, well, he
• 29:12
Speaker 3: was clearly bought off by the Saudis just because he
• 29:14
Speaker 3: does business with the Saudis on the golf course. And
• 29:16
Speaker 3: I've got lots of issues with the Saudis on their
• 29:18
Speaker 3: human rights stuff and a lot of other things. I
• 29:20
Speaker 3: don't like the sports washing that the live golf tournament does.
• 29:23
Speaker 3: But no, you can't make that jump and say something
• 29:26
Speaker 3: like that without some actual proof of it. This is
• 29:28
Speaker 3: a large group of companies that they can move money around,
• 29:31
Speaker 3: and they can't move it today. They have to call banks,
• 29:33
Speaker 3: they got to do collateral, they gotta do things. Doesn't
• 29:35
Speaker 3: mean it's a conspiracy. But again, the fair criticism, not
• 29:39
Speaker 3: the conspiracy is. Governor Justice talks about this, lays out
• 29:42
Speaker 3: his reasoning, says, yes, we're putting together deal. It's going
• 29:45
Speaker 3: to take five to ten days. Put the deal together.
• 29:47
Speaker 3: Now you've cooled the story off. And by just stonewalling
• 29:49
Speaker 3: the press because it plays really well in social medium,
• 29:52
Speaker 3: plays really well to your constituents that are politically inligned
• 29:55
Speaker 3: with you, you're actually keeping the story going. So my
• 29:58
Speaker 3: advice to the governor would be be little more forthcoming.
• 30:01
Speaker 3: Give the You don't have to tell the media everything
• 30:03
Speaker 3: because it is an adversarial media, as it should be.
• 30:05
Speaker 3: There should be a give and take there. There should
• 30:07
Speaker 3: be an adversarial relationship. But you got to give them
• 30:09
Speaker 3: something or they're going to go looking for more. Give
• 30:12
Speaker 3: them something. Be a little more upfront. This story would
• 30:14
Speaker 3: cool off. It's not and here we be coop.
• 30:17
Speaker 6: I think that that's that's right on the uh. Sometimes
• 30:20
Speaker 6: by not giving what should be known you, you you
• 30:24
Speaker 6: risk unearthing things that maybe you didn't want to have known,
• 30:27
Speaker 6: and that can lead to some problems. It reminds me
• 30:29
Speaker 6: you remember that old movie Wag the Dog. It had hawk, Yeah, exactly,
• 30:34
Speaker 6: dusn't Hoffin and Robert De Niro had had a great
• 30:36
Speaker 6: cast in it. And if I remember correctly, was Hoffman
• 30:40
Speaker 6: the advisor or the man it's been so long as
• 30:42
  Speaker 6: I've seen.
• 30:42
Speaker 3: Him spend doctor, Yeah whatever they called you, and he
• 30:45
Speaker 3: is not enjoy the end of that movie, by the way,
• 30:47
  Speaker 3: yet not.
• 30:48
Speaker 5: Too much away exactly right.
• 30:49
Speaker 6: But he gave advice to the president at one time
• 30:51
Speaker 6: when the president was associated with sort of a shady figure.
• 30:54
  Speaker 4: Uh.
• 30:55
Speaker 6: The president and his other advisers were like, you know,
• 30:57
Speaker 6: we have to distance ourselves as much as possible. We
• 30:58
Speaker 6: have to deny that we know everything about him. And
• 31:01
Speaker 6: Hoffman's advisor said, you know what what you need to
• 31:03
Speaker 6: do is actually embrace him. Say I'm as close as
• 31:05
Speaker 6: I could possibly be to him. What do you mean
• 31:06
Speaker 6: he did something? I would be personally offended if I
• 31:09
Speaker 6: found out that he was into some shading dealings or whatever. Now,
• 31:12
Speaker 6: in the real world that doesn't translate one to one,
• 31:14
Speaker 6: but there is I think a message in that, and
• 31:16
Speaker 6: that do not deny, deny when there's when there's something there,
• 31:20
Speaker 6: Why not just be honest if you have that capability
• 31:23
  Speaker 6: to do so.
• 31:24
Speaker 5: Yeah, I think so too.
• 31:26
Speaker 3: High school football is back WCHS Networks dot Com has

• 31:42

• 31:46
Speaker 3: on ninety six point one. Now that game's been slid
• 31:49
Speaker 3: back for heat. I don't remember that ever happening before
• 31:51
Speaker 3: they slid it back. Today o'clock they're still going to
• 31:53
Speaker 3: cover it, And of course, the big one across Metro
• 31:56

• 31:59

• 32:05
Speaker 5: And if you're like my mother, we will.
• 32:06
Speaker 3: Be watching it in the room and she will be
• 32:08
Speaker 3: standing in the kitchen listening to Metro News coverage because
• 32:11
Speaker 3: she listens on the radio in the kitchen. I love you, Mom,
• 32:13
Speaker 3: but that's how she does it. So if you want
• 32:15
Speaker 3: to do it old school, Metro News has you completely
• 32:17
Speaker 3: covered cool segment coming up next. Make sure you such
• 32:20
Speaker 3: Today we've been talking a lot about the media, how
• 32:22
Speaker 3: they cover in state and deal with the governor and
• 32:24
Speaker 3: all this. So I had an idea, what does the
• 32:27
Speaker 3: national media, what does the d C press? What does
• 32:29
Speaker 3: DC itself think of the representatives that West Virginia sends
• 32:33
Speaker 3: to Washington d C. Our two senators and our to
• 32:35
Speaker 3: House of Representative Delegates. So I've reached out to Eric Garcia.
• 32:38
  Speaker 3: He's a great congressional reporter. I've had a long standing
• 32:41
  Speaker 3: relation to him.
• 32:41
  Speaker 5: He's good.
• 32:42
Speaker 3: So if he says I talked to Joe Manchin about this,
• 32:43
Speaker 3: it's because he actually bumped him to him in the hallway,
• 32:45
Speaker 3: asking him the questions his point of view of West
• 32:49

• 36:38
Speaker 3: something fun because we've been talking a lot about the
• 36:40
Speaker 3: States press relationship inside the state. You're part of those
• 36:45
Speaker 3: evil Washington people, right, these people are You're they? You're them,
• 36:49
  Speaker 3: You're those guys.
• 36:50
Speaker 5: You're one of them.
• 36:52
Speaker 3: You've heard all that kind of stuff, but you do
• 36:54
Speaker 3: really good work. I wanted to ask you for the
• 36:56
Speaker 3: people of West Virginia, what the reputation of people's they're
• 37:01
Speaker 3: representatives and their people in Washington.
• 37:03
  Speaker 6: D c is.
• 37:03
Speaker 5: Let's start with Senator Capito very quietly, because she's not
• 37:08
Speaker 5: the flash is on social media and stuff. But you
• 37:11
Speaker 5: and I have talked before.
• 37:12
Speaker 3: There's superstar senators, and then there's political senators, and then
• 37:16
Speaker 3: there's effective senators. Very quietly, Senator capitol has become a
• 37:20
Speaker 3: very effective senator. Whatever your politics are, she gets things done,
• 37:23
  Speaker 3: She's built relationships, she's.
• 37:25
Speaker 5: On the right committee.
• 37:25
Speaker 3: She got halle Berry in the West Virginia on halle
• 37:27
Speaker 3: Berry's birthday. That's got to count for something. What's her
• 37:31
Speaker 3: reputation there is That a fair way to put it that,
• 37:33
Speaker 3: whether you like her politics or not, she's become effective.
• 37:37
Speaker 8: Absolutely it is the case. I mean, you can't deny
• 37:39
Speaker 8: that she gets stuff done. She is the top Republicans
• 37:44
Speaker 8: on environment and public work. She gets along really well
• 37:47
Speaker 8: with Tom Carper, who's the top Democrat as a chairman
• 37:50
Speaker 8: public committee I mean is Republicans in the Senate, which
• 37:53
Speaker 8: it looks like it's very likely she's going to be
• 37:56
Speaker 8: the chairwoman of that. She's also on the Appropriation Community.
• 38:00
Speaker 8: And you and I know this, and you know that
• 38:03
Speaker 8: you know they're saying there's Democrats, there's Republicans and there's appropriators.
• 38:07
Speaker 8: Appropriators are the ones who writes the budgets. They're the
• 38:10
Speaker 8: ones who, uh who set afot all the money. These
• 38:15
Speaker 8: are the people. These are the se when you got
• 38:16
Speaker 8: all the Congress critters, you know, doing their stuff. The
• 38:19
Speaker 8: appropriators are the ones who sit down write how much
• 38:22
Speaker 8: money is going to be spent at the end of
• 38:23
Speaker 8: the day. And she's also just really effective at bringing
• 38:26
Speaker 8: home money for West Virginia. If you look at the
• 38:28
Speaker 8: recentle streats and budgets and appropriations built, she brings home
• 38:33
Speaker 8: a killing And I think, I mean, this is this
• 38:36
Speaker 8: is this is the old Robert bird thing, right, you know, yeah,
• 38:39
Speaker 8: you just get this is why Robert birt hels so
• 38:41
Speaker 8: many darned things named for him in West Virginia is
• 38:45
Speaker 8: because uh, poorer states, states with not as much income,
• 38:48
Speaker 8: states of modes manly high earners need federal money. Uh
• 38:53
Speaker 8: or states with the states with people without as many
• 38:55
Speaker 8: college degrees need federal money to to to succeed and drive.
• 38:58
Speaker 8: She's also on the on the Congress Science and Essas
• 39:00
Speaker 8: to be You know, what's actually funny is that, you know,
• 39:03
Speaker 8: with all this talk about set up Minority leader Mitch
• 39:05
Speaker 8: McConnell stepping aside. What blows my mind is that there
• 39:09
  Speaker 8: would be a great I can't think of a better
• 39:11
Speaker 8: way to quote unquote own the Libs than to have
• 39:16
Speaker 8: a woman set up an Nordy leader and chliborough capital
• 39:19
Speaker 8: would be front of the classroom me. But nobody's even
• 39:22
  Speaker 8: thinking about it.
• 39:24
Speaker 3: Yeah, she may not want that to be fair there
• 39:26
Speaker 3: because the three Johns are going to fight each other
• 39:28
Speaker 3: for it. But we'll talk about that another time. We're
• 39:31
Speaker 3: gonna have a transition in West Virginia with Joe Manchin
• 39:33
Speaker 3: stepping off the scene. Look, he's been a fixture point
• 39:36
Speaker 3: in West Virginia politics for twenty years now. Of course
• 39:39
Speaker 3: we know the family leg legacy going back to his
• 39:41
Speaker 3: uncle A. James Mansion. It got ugly at the end.
• 39:45
Speaker 3: Is that fair to say it got messy at the end.
• 39:47
Speaker 3: His reputation I think took a hit on all sides.
• 39:51
Speaker 3: What do you think the legacy of Joe manchon as
• 39:53
Speaker 3: he steps aside finally from his Senate purchase, Because a
• 39:55
Speaker 3: lot of the last couple of years, Man, if you
• 39:57
Speaker 3: were doing anything in the Senate, it was going to
• 39:58
Speaker 3: go through Joe Mansion's office. One way or the other.
• 40:00
  Speaker 6: Right.
• 40:01
Speaker 8: I think Joe Manchin was the Emperor of the Senate.
• 40:04
Speaker 8: I think you called him the captain of the Senate.
• 40:06
  Speaker 14: Uh.
• 40:07
Speaker 8: Look, I mean when it came down to it, when
• 40:09
Speaker 8: Democrats had a trifecta and they had fifty seasons Senate
• 40:13
Speaker 8: as you said, anything that Democrats wanted need to go
• 40:17
Speaker 8: through Joe manchon. And I've I've heard plenty of stories
• 40:20
Speaker 8: about advocates going of the hill and uh, you know,
• 40:24
Speaker 8: senators saying, leot, we want to get this through. But
• 40:28
Speaker 8: but but Joe Manchin.
• 40:29
  Speaker 14: Doesn't like it.
• 40:31
Speaker 8: So I think his legacy, you know, at the end
• 40:33
Speaker 8: of the day, his legacy is really it's a couple
• 40:36
Speaker 8: of things. One is, you know, obviously his baby was
• 40:42
Speaker 8: the infrastructure bill, but that was what he really wanted
• 40:44
Speaker 8: to do. To his legacy is you know, I needn't
• 40:48
Speaker 8: build that better. And uh, but but the three like
• 40:51
Speaker 8: you know a lot of people say, oh, well, ex Senator,
• 40:55
Speaker 8: they voted one in line with Joe Manchin, with Joe Biden.
• 41:00
Speaker 8: I actually no, they're voted one hundred percent in line
• 41:01
Speaker 8: with Joe Manjen we can put up and Joe Manchin
• 41:03
Speaker 8: waden would pass the Setate and even if it wasn't
• 41:05
Speaker 8: necessarily all of what Joe Biden wanted, so he was
• 41:08
Speaker 8: the agenda center. And then I think the other one
• 41:10
Speaker 8: is the Inflation Reduction Act.
• 41:13
Speaker 7: Look after he killed Buck Butter Bill Duck Gutter, he
• 41:16
Speaker 7: negotiated with let Truck Schumer for.
• 41:18
Speaker 8: The majority Leader Truck Shumer right, that Deill.
• 41:22
Speaker 7: Basically is his bill.
• 41:24
Speaker 8: But you know, he left that whole process kind of
• 41:28
Speaker 8: I don't want to stay bitter, but very.
• 41:31
Speaker 7: Disillusioned because he didn't like how the.
• 41:33
Speaker 8: Administration was implementing it. He really wanted more. I guess
• 41:36
Speaker 8: he could say of it all of the above strategies.
• 41:39
Speaker 8: Joseph of bios Royds was a fantastic before over at
• 41:41
Speaker 8: seven and four noted that, like, the issue is that
• 41:44
Speaker 8: mansion was kind of come up as own sets because
• 41:47
Speaker 8: the tax credits for electric cars and electric vehicles were
• 41:50
Speaker 8: so successful that it required that people that you know,
• 41:53
Speaker 8: there were just warned enough electric vehicles in the United
• 41:55
Speaker 8: States and car battery manufacturing in the US, so people
• 41:57
Speaker 8: had to buy them from China. So I think his
• 42:00
Speaker 8: legacy is, you know, it's one that a lot of
• 42:03
Speaker 8: was Virginia might not like beause the fact that you know,
• 42:07
Speaker 8: if the Biden administration implemented so much folks so renewables.
• 42:10
Speaker 8: But at the end of the day, you know, he
• 42:13
Speaker 8: was really keen on the fact that a lot of
• 42:16
Speaker 8: jobs are going to come to West Virginia. And you know,
• 42:18
Speaker 8: ten twenty years down the road, when there are electric
• 42:20
Speaker 8: vehicle manufacturers in West Virginia, that's the Hugo Mansions legacy.
• 42:24
Speaker 7: People who would like have a career and have a
• 42:27
  Speaker 7: pension and have.
• 42:28
Speaker 8: A job at an electric vehicle manufacturer, you can pay
• 42:31
  Speaker 8: Joe Manchin.
• 42:33
  Speaker 5: Yeah.
• 42:33
Speaker 3: Eric Garcia, Chief Congression correspondent, Washingon Bureau chief for the Independent,
• 42:37
Speaker 3: make sure you're following him online and on social media.
• 42:39
Speaker 3: The West Virginia has been a victim of of course,
• 42:43
Speaker 3: the population declined, we're down to only two congressional district
• 42:46
Speaker 3: But Representative Carol Miller's kind of interesting because again another
• 42:51
Speaker 3: doesn't keep a super hot profile, but is in the
• 42:54
Speaker 3: House now. The House, though, is a very different beast
• 42:56
Speaker 3: where West Virginia has been at the forefront of the
• 42:58
Speaker 3: US Senate for really years, going back with various things.
• 43:02
Speaker 3: Very quiet in the Congression that but what's the reputation
• 43:05
Speaker 3: of Representative Miller in the halls of Congress.
• 43:08
Speaker 8: You know, it's funny you mentioned that because like the
• 43:10
Speaker 8: reputation of Cheryl Miller is that she doesn't have a reputation.
• 43:15
Speaker 8: You could you know, you could.
• 43:16
Speaker 7: Say that it's good or bad. But uh, but but
• 43:19
Speaker 7: but I think that like.
• 43:20
Speaker 8: You know, for for better force, I mean, she she
• 43:22
Speaker 8: was she did get in trouble back in the business.
• 43:28
Speaker 8: Was better reward of this that she dot that she
• 43:30
Speaker 8: that she didn't disclose some of her stock trades under
• 43:34
Speaker 8: the Stock Act. That that that was kind of that
• 43:36
Speaker 8: was kind of I guess you could say a mini
• 43:37
Speaker 8: scandal for her. Uh but but but more over, more
• 43:41
Speaker 8: than anything, I think that the biggest thing is that
• 43:45
Speaker 8: you know, for better or for worse, she just doesn't
• 43:48
Speaker 8: have a reputation. And I think that's just the best.
• 43:51
Speaker 8: Uh that that's probably the best thing you could you
• 43:56
Speaker 8: could have West Virginia. Is not to cause a lot
• 43:58
Speaker 8: of fuss, not to cause a lot of about to
• 44:00
Speaker 8: cause a lot of problems.
• 44:01
  Speaker 2: Uh.
• 44:01
Speaker 8: She's on ways and means, which is always.
• 44:03
  Speaker 7: A good thing.
• 44:04
  Speaker 13: Uh.
• 44:05
Speaker 8: But uh, you know, for for for a member of
• 44:08
Speaker 8: Congress come to state, like let's you think out with
• 44:10
Speaker 8: the population decline, but really just doesn't have such a
• 44:13
  Speaker 8: reputation at all.
• 44:17
Speaker 3: Eric Garcia joining us UH representative Mooney is leaving the house,
• 44:22
Speaker 3: but you already had to cover it a few times,
• 44:25
Speaker 3: a messy exit with a whole lot of questions.
• 44:29
Speaker 8: Yeah, I mean, Alex Mooney is just you know, there's
• 44:32
Speaker 8: no way around it. He's said under a think investigations,
• 44:34
Speaker 8: he can played like dandy'll uh you know, say nothing
• 44:39
Speaker 8: about like about his residency. More than anything, it's just
• 44:43
Speaker 8: the thing about Mooney is that he really does show
• 44:47
Speaker 8: I guess the best way to say it is he
• 44:50
Speaker 8: shows the limits of a politician who's not Doald Trump
• 44:55
Speaker 8: acting in a model way. He shows that there's not
• 44:59
Speaker 8: really you know, obvious. He tried running for Senate. He
• 45:01
Speaker 8: tried running. You know, it just didn't work out because
• 45:05
Speaker 8: Jim Justice was just unbeautiful at the gable in that primary.
• 45:08
Speaker 8: But really he just you know, it showed that he's
• 45:13
Speaker 8: not you know again, he's he's leading without making any
• 45:16
Speaker 8: real kind of distinctive impact. Obviously. He ran against Dave
• 45:21
Speaker 8: McKinley in the primary in twenty twenty two, largely on
• 45:23
Speaker 8: the basis that McKinley supported the bipart of the infrastructure
• 45:26
Speaker 8: development mood. He did, but like you know, again, for
• 45:29
Speaker 8: a state like Lesgi, as you say, he has a
• 45:31
Speaker 8: population decline, a lot of had a lot of issues.
• 45:34
Speaker 8: He really didn't do anything to benefit the state as
• 45:37
Speaker 8: you know, or approving good lives.
• 45:41
Speaker 3: Derek Garcia joining US. Okay, assuming he wins and with
• 45:44
Speaker 3: all due respects to the electoral process. If Jim Justice
• 45:47
Speaker 3: is elected to the Senate and moves up from governor
• 45:50
Speaker 3: West Virginia to Senator from West Virginia, he's already got
• 45:53
Speaker 3: a lot of inroads, a lot of talk.
• 45:55
Speaker 5: He was recruited to run for this position.
• 45:57
Speaker 3: He's openly said I don't want to go to Washington,
• 45:59
Speaker 3: but he was. What's the Washington viewpoint about the possible
• 46:03
Speaker 3: arrival of Jim Justice in the US Senate.
• 46:06
Speaker 4: I think it is.
• 46:07
Speaker 8: I think it's going to be fascinating because I think
• 46:09
Speaker 8: that Justice is, as you know, he used to be
• 46:13
Speaker 8: a Democrat for a little bit. Joe Manton convince him
• 46:15
Speaker 8: to become a Democrat top governor, and then he's such parties.
• 46:19
Speaker 7: I think the thing that.
• 46:21
Speaker 8: A lot of it really depends on what happens with
• 46:26
Speaker 8: with Donald Trump, with the presidential elections.
• 46:29
Speaker 7: Because my guess is.
• 46:31
Speaker 8: If it's Donald Trump at the president of United State,
• 46:33
Speaker 8: the Repolican States set a majority, he is going to
• 46:36
Speaker 8: be a lockstep both with things like judges possible Supreme
• 46:40
  Speaker 8: Court nominations.
• 46:43
Speaker 7: But if he is, you know, he's he's had kind of.
• 46:46
Speaker 8: A populist vet. If you remember when Manjum would kind
• 46:49
Speaker 8: of waffle in on the American Rescue Plan, he was
• 46:51
Speaker 8: kind of just telling Joe, hey, past this thing, we
• 46:55
  Speaker 8: need it.
• 46:56
  Speaker 3: Uh.
• 46:56
Speaker 8: You know, it's possible that he could make some deal
• 46:59
Speaker 8: with Democrats. He could vote excuse me, a Kamalaine Harris
• 47:03
Speaker 8: as president. You know, it's possible to converse together. But again,
• 47:07
Speaker 8: you know a lot of really depends on whether Trump,
• 47:09
Speaker 8: uh Truf or Harrison is in the Oval office.
• 47:14
Speaker 3: Yeah, it's going to be interesting. Eric Garcia appreciate the
• 47:17
Speaker 3: time today, buddy, Thank you so much. Follow him Eric M.
• 47:20
Speaker 3: Garcia on the Twitter. He's also got a great book out.

• 49:31
Speaker 3: will be near you if you don't already have one.
• 49:34
Speaker 5: Dale, Cooper's joining me.
• 49:35
  Speaker 6: Dale.
• 49:36
Speaker 3: Let's let's end on a good note here real quick.
• 49:39
Speaker 3: We mentioned my mom listening to the radio, and this
• 49:42
Speaker 3: is a problem during w games because we'll be watching
• 49:44
Speaker 3: the TV and the radio runs faster than the TV feeds,
• 49:47
Speaker 3: So when she starts yelling, you know the play score
• 49:49
Speaker 3: before you actually get to see it, which is a
• 49:50
Speaker 3: little annoying, but that's okay.
• 49:52
  Speaker 5: We love her.
• 49:53
Speaker 3: My mom's favorite player last year for WVU was Beanie Bishop.
• 49:56
Speaker 5: It was not closed.
• 49:57
Speaker 3: I actually had a little viral video of when he
• 49:59
Speaker 3: ran the punt back in the Bowl game and you know,
• 50:02
Speaker 3: she just lost her mind. But good news out undrafted
• 50:05
Speaker 3: free agent he made the Steelers survive cutdown Day yesterday's
• 50:09
Speaker 3: going to make the Steelers my mom's favorite player.
• 50:11
Speaker 5: I just wanted to end on a good note.
• 50:13
Speaker 3: Like to see, there's a long list by the way,
• 50:14
Speaker 3: you go to various alis WU players that made NFL
• 50:18
Speaker 3: cutdown Day on Tuesday, so go check that out. But
• 50:20
Speaker 3: that's my good note of the day that Beanie Bishop
• 50:22
Speaker 3: made the Steelers rotation be joining Zach Frazier. And at
• 50:26
Speaker 3: about ten forty last night, my mom sent me a note,
• 50:28
Speaker 3: which means she'd already fallen asleep.
• 50:29
  Speaker 5: Well gum songs.
• 50:30
Speaker 3: She said, that's great, it's official. I'll be a Steelers fan.
• 50:33
Speaker 3: So you can let weekly know this afternoon, at seventy
• 50:35
Speaker 3: six years old, my mom has finally picked an NFL team.
• 50:37
Speaker 6: And that's outstanding. Out I was a little worried about him, honestly.
• 50:40
Speaker 6: He came out of the blocks great in the beginning
• 50:42
Speaker 6: of preseason and issue yeah, and he didn't play much
• 50:45
Speaker 6: the last couple of games, and you know, when you're
• 50:47
Speaker 6: a rookie undrafted, you're thinking, man, if you don't get
• 50:49
Speaker 6: in those last couple of games, are you going to
• 50:51
Speaker 6: make the team. But apparently he presented himself well enough
• 50:53
Speaker 6: in those first couple of games, where you know, I
• 50:55
Speaker 6: think he was at one time he was competing for
• 50:57
Speaker 6: a starting slot. I think at very worst he might
• 51:00
Speaker 6: be able to slide into their nickel. And they're going
• 51:01
Speaker 6: to run a lot more nickel this year. So you know,
• 51:03
Speaker 6: a lot of WU things happening at the Steelers because
• 51:06
Speaker 6: they got Fraser, Zach Fraser up there at center as well.
• 51:09
Speaker 6: So there's always seems to be some kind of a
• 51:10
Speaker 6: WU connection with Pitton, with the Steelers.
• 51:13
Speaker 3: Don't say Pitt. Yeah, I know if you say Pitt right,
• 51:16
Speaker 3: bad bad producer. And Zach Fraser I will quote and
• 51:20
Speaker 3: I can't remember his name, right, I created him one
• 51:21
Speaker 3: of the real good beat reporters for Steelers.
• 51:23
Speaker 5: During the preseason game.
• 51:24
Speaker 3: He said, Zach Fraser is slated to start and probably
• 51:26
Speaker 3: will be for the next decade.
• 51:28
Speaker 6: Yep, I mean he is.
• 51:29
Speaker 3: If you go watch the breakdown tape and say, while
• 51:31
Speaker 3: we're talking football, WCHS Networks has got you covered. For
• 51:34
Speaker 3: all the high school games Friday night, Hurricane Huntington, that's
• 51:37
Speaker 3: going to be a good one right here on five
• 51:39
Speaker 3: to eighty ninety six point one. Go over there for
• 51:41
Speaker 3: the kickoff game Hoover. It's going to be playing Independence.
• 51:45
Speaker 3: That was Ghostly seven. They're going to move that back
• 51:46
Speaker 3: to eight because of the heat. So apm and then
• 51:49
Speaker 3: of course w Game Day from Metro News all day
• 51:51
Speaker 3: long starting eight am. Of course the game is big.
• 51:53
Speaker 3: Do you learn anything today?
• 51:54
  Speaker 7: Man?
• 51:55
Speaker 6: A good show man. I appreciate it. Did a great
• 51:57
Speaker 6: job and learned a lot of stuff, had a lot
• 51:59
  Speaker 6: of interesting guests.
• 51:59
Speaker 3: One we got two really fun things to do tomorrow.
• 52:02
Speaker 3: We're gonna debate the cell phones in school thing with
• 52:04
Speaker 3: my buddy Frankie frank Garion, Gary Franklin, I can't even
• 52:08
Speaker 3: say his name, Gary and Frankel. He's from down in Texas,
• 52:11
Speaker 3: so he has one of those fun names. He'll be
• 52:13
Speaker 3: on the debate the cell phones in school tomorrow. Also,
• 52:16
Speaker 3: we're gonna talk space. Our buddy, doctor Michael Siegel. You've
• 52:18
Speaker 3: heard him on other programming. He'll be back to talk
• 52:20
Speaker 3: about space. I'll be back tomorrow. Dave Allen Show, five
• 52:24
Speaker 3: eighty Live. So good being here. Thank you all.
• 52:26
Speaker 5: Have a great day.
• 52:54
Speaker 2: You see a Saint six point five, then Charleston one
• 52:56
Speaker 2: oh four point five Cross Lant's w u VRC Media station.
• 53:01
Speaker 2: We are proud to live here too,
