- 0:18It took a minute,
- 0:19now it didn't have to ride away.
- 0:21When it get hot in the kitchen,
- 0:22you decide to stay.
- 0:24That's how it winners me.
- 0:25Stick a fork in the hater on my dinner.
- 0:34What's going on, everybody?
- 0:35Welcome to the Clydesdale Media Podcast.
- 0:37My name is Scott Switzer.
- 0:38I'm the Clydesdale.
- 0:39We are here highlighting the
- 0:40athletes of the 2024
- 0:43Legends Masters CrossFit Games.
- 0:45And I have with me Clint Russell,
- 0:49Masters athlete,
- 0:5140 to 44-year-old division,
- 0:52giving us a glimpse into
- 0:53the real life of a Masters athlete.
- 0:58What's going on, Clint?
- 0:59Hey, how we doing, Scott?
- 1:01Good.
- 1:02Good.
- 1:04Yeah, thank you for having me on.
- 1:06Really appreciate what
- 1:07you're doing with the Masters athletes.
- 1:08It's super cool to get to feature us.
- 1:11I'm at a birthday party,
- 1:15one of my daughter's friends,
- 1:15and I've got my
- 1:16four-year-old son with me.
- 1:17So like I said,
- 1:18I apologize for any interruptions.
- 1:20It's just kind of how it had to work out.
- 1:22I didn't want my wife is
- 1:24going to work out with one
- 1:24of the other ladies in the gym,
- 1:26as well as got our other two kids.
- 1:28So this is real life.
- 1:31Yeah,
- 1:31so what's cool about these profiles are,
- 1:35as a Masters athlete,
- 1:36you have to live a real life.
- 1:38You're the father of four kids.
- 1:40Yes, sir.
- 1:42You're married.
- 1:43You own two different businesses,
- 1:45at least.
- 1:48Yeah, so.
- 1:49You're living life trying to
- 1:50get everybody to get fit.
- 1:53Yeah.
- 1:54So, like,
- 1:57I'll tell you the thing that is
- 1:59the hardest thing for me.
- 2:01So I have two businesses,
- 2:02CrossFit Coronado and One
- 2:03Life Physical Therapy.
- 2:05Wife's a nurse.
- 2:06She's also a nurse in the Navy Reserve,
- 2:09which she joined last September.
- 2:12And she was gone for five
- 2:14weeks during semifinals.
- 2:15The thing that I struggle
- 2:16with the most is not necessarily training,
- 2:22but
- 2:22feeling like I'm maybe not
- 2:24spending as much time on
- 2:27ultimately things that are
- 2:28a higher priority than fitness.
- 2:30Uh, and so, so sometimes I gotta, you know,
- 2:33I have an awesome team around me though,
- 2:34that tells me to knock that
- 2:36off and just do my thing,
- 2:37which is really awesome.
- 2:38Yeah,
- 2:39I've talked to a lot of athletes who
- 2:42feel like they have a lot
- 2:43of buckets that they have
- 2:44to take care of.
- 2:45And they feel like it's a
- 2:48hard time being great at any one of them.
- 2:50They're just kind of average at all.
- 2:52And that's a feeling and a
- 2:53guilt that they have being
- 2:55a Masters athlete.
- 2:57You know, what usually...
- 3:01Like for me,
- 3:02it's like so I can set my own
- 3:04schedule with business with
- 3:06my business and I could
- 3:08back off and train more.
- 3:10But for most of the year,
- 3:11I don't so that I could do that now.
- 3:16Yeah,
- 3:16that's kind of how I like the way
- 3:18that I'm training.
- 3:19I could not do that year round.
- 3:20There's no way like my
- 3:21business just life would fall apart.
- 3:25But I kind of don't do that
- 3:26year round so that now when I need to,
- 3:29I can't.
- 3:31So you're, you're CrossFit OG.
- 3:34Like you started back when
- 3:36there were very few
- 3:37affiliates in the world, 2008.
- 3:38We were, uh, I think pre rogue,
- 3:43if I'm not mistaken.
- 3:45Yeah.
- 3:46You actually went to three
- 3:48regionals in what?
- 3:5010, 11 and 12.
- 3:52Uh, yes, sir.
- 3:53It was, uh, it was a long time ago.
- 3:55Um, it's very different now.
- 3:58Um,
- 3:59But yeah, that was just,
- 4:02it's amazing to see how
- 4:04training has improved as
- 4:06well as just how much better everyone is.
- 4:10Like the Masters now,
- 4:13probably in the 45 to 49 division,
- 4:17at least would smoke those regionals.
- 4:22I mean, people are just so much fitter.
- 4:25It's insane.
- 4:25Um, and it really, it really like,
- 4:29it's exciting to see like
- 4:30what the possibilities are going forward.
- 4:32Um,
- 4:33and then this is kind of getting a little,
- 4:36you just made me think like
- 4:37with the master's division, um,
- 4:40I think something that the
- 4:41master's division does is there's a,
- 4:43there's a,
- 4:44there's a lot of people that
- 4:46that kind of gives them
- 4:47something to be excited about, you know,
- 4:49and there's, uh,
- 4:51Maybe it's not as big as the individuals,
- 4:52but I know for me, training for this,
- 4:55I don't drink alcohol,
- 4:58at least not when I'm training for this.
- 4:59I tend to eat a lot better.
- 5:00I tend to sleep more.
- 5:02It tends to get people doing
- 5:03a lot of things we want
- 5:04them to do in the gym that
- 5:06are ultimately going to
- 5:07make them better at life.
- 5:11And all those things set an
- 5:13example for your clients, your kids,
- 5:16your friends,
- 5:19Do you ever think about that,
- 5:21that all these things
- 5:22you're doing are setting a
- 5:24major example for the people around you?
- 5:27Yeah.
- 5:27I was just talking to my
- 5:28daughter about swimming.
- 5:30My 8-year-old wants to start swimming,
- 5:31and she does gymnastics.
- 5:33And I was just talking to
- 5:34her how what you're really
- 5:36learning when you do those things is,
- 5:38like, you have to get – like,
- 5:39you've probably seen that
- 5:41Instagram post from Tom
- 5:42Brady where he's like,
- 5:44everybody should play
- 5:44football because getting up
- 5:45early and training is hard.
- 5:47Like the ability to just like wake up,
- 5:51set your mind to something
- 5:53and get it done.
- 5:54That's such a valuable skill, you know,
- 5:58that translates to
- 5:59everything else you do in your life.
- 6:01To be accountable to
- 6:02yourself and to your
- 6:04teammates and whatever your
- 6:05responsibility is just to
- 6:06go out there and make it happen.
- 6:08And that's sports does such
- 6:11a good job of teaching that.
- 6:15When you started CrossFit in 2008,
- 6:17first of all, how did you find it?
- 6:20I'd gotten out of the Navy,
- 6:21or actually I was on my way
- 6:22out of the Navy,
- 6:23and there was a guy that I
- 6:28knew from the Navy, Andy and Steve,
- 6:32Andy Stump and Steve Mitchell,
- 6:33they owned CrossFit Coronado,
- 6:35so I just went there and
- 6:38started working out, and that was kind of
- 6:44Something I noticed about it
- 6:45is at the time, I'm not anymore,
- 6:47but at the time I was a
- 6:48pretty good runner.
- 6:50But there were these hills
- 6:52kind of where my wife now,
- 6:54we were dating at the time,
- 6:56and it would take me, I don't know,
- 6:5820 plus minutes to get up to him.
- 7:00I don't know how far it was,
- 7:01but I had to walk.
- 7:03I couldn't run the whole time.
- 7:05And then I started doing
- 7:06CrossFit only twice a week.
- 7:09And it went from taking like
- 7:1020 minutes to like 14 minutes.
- 7:12because I was able to run
- 7:13the whole time and I was like, Whoa.
- 7:16And I like, I hadn't been running and I,
- 7:18and that's that, that sold me on this.
- 7:21And it wasn't that you were
- 7:22falling more in love with your wife.
- 7:24And so you just got fatter.
- 7:26Hey, she, she hates running.
- 7:29So I'm on my own in that, but no.
- 7:34So it only took you a year
- 7:37of doing CrossFit to then coach CrossFit.
- 7:40Yeah.
- 7:41So, uh,
- 7:43Andy soul,
- 7:44like Steve took over the gym in 20, 2009.
- 7:47So they needed another coach.
- 7:51Uh, I got certified.
- 7:53Um, I started coaching.
- 7:55Um,
- 7:56and then this was obviously a very long
- 7:59time ago when I would say
- 8:01nobody really had that much experience.
- 8:03There wasn't that much experience.
- 8:05Um, and then I, uh, I took over the gym.
- 8:11in August of 2010 is when I bought it.
- 8:15And kind of the rest.
- 8:17Yeah, it's like,
- 8:19it's such an amazing community.
- 8:22So you've been an affiliate
- 8:23owner for almost 15 years now.
- 8:26Yeah.
- 8:28Yeah, we it's a long time.
- 8:33You're also a physical therapist,
- 8:35you hold a doctorate in physical therapy.
- 8:39Yes.
- 8:40how do you balance running
- 8:41two businesses and do you
- 8:43do any of that physical
- 8:44therapy out of the gym?
- 8:46So we do all of it out of the gym.
- 8:48Okay.
- 8:50Um,
- 8:50in 2014 I went back to school and I got
- 8:53my doctorate in physical therapy.
- 8:56Um, and then I kind of,
- 8:59Let's see, started like it was,
- 9:02I also had to work.
- 9:02So it was online, took four years.
- 9:04So it was done in 2018.
- 9:07I kind of started my
- 9:09practice like November, 2019, but like,
- 9:11I didn't really,
- 9:12I mostly just worked at the gym.
- 9:15I'd see a patient every now and then.
- 9:16My wife worked full time as a nurse.
- 9:18We were good.
- 9:18You know, we were happy with that.
- 9:21And then COVID happened, gyms closed.
- 9:25You know, that was pretty rough.
- 9:28Uh,
- 9:29so I got where I had the idea that if I
- 9:33could accept TRICARE,
- 9:34which is the military healthcare,
- 9:36being that we're in Coronado,
- 9:38most of the people at our
- 9:38gym were in the military, uh,
- 9:40as well as there's a lot of
- 9:41people in the island,
- 9:41it would remove the
- 9:42financial barrier to entry
- 9:44and it would basically save
- 9:46us from COVID.
- 9:47And I was hoping that I
- 9:48could like do that and
- 9:50maybe see like 10 people a week.
- 9:52And that would allow us to survive, uh,
- 9:54during COVID.
- 9:55Um, but fast forward to now, uh,
- 9:58we have myself three other
- 9:59therapists as well as the scheduler.
- 10:01Um, all of us are military spouses and, uh,
- 10:05it's, it's something I'm really proud of.
- 10:06Like the people working for
- 10:07me are able to set their
- 10:09own schedule and also make
- 10:11more than they would, uh,
- 10:13at the surrounding places.
- 10:16That's awesome.
- 10:17So I asked this of all physical therapists,
- 10:20when you're being the athlete,
- 10:22when you have your physical
- 10:23therapist on you, you,
- 10:25your physical therapy hat
- 10:27on one side and you,
- 10:29the athlete on the other side,
- 10:31while you're working out,
- 10:32which one do you listen to more?
- 10:35You know, I kind of like, you know,
- 10:38I was a strength and
- 10:39control coach first and coaching was,
- 10:43like I I'm a physical therapist,
- 10:45but I think like a coach.
- 10:48And so what I like to think about, like,
- 10:51so if we're doing say bar muscle ups,
- 10:55I'm thinking about the
- 10:56technique of the movement,
- 10:58but like a physical therapist,
- 10:59if that makes sense.
- 11:00Okay.
- 11:01So I'm like, no,
- 11:03I have to make sure I keep
- 11:04my like scapula engaged and
- 11:06push down the bar here
- 11:07because that's going to
- 11:07give me the greatest transfer of force.
- 11:09So it's almost like I'm a, yeah,
- 11:12like I'm a,
- 11:14coach who happens to be a
- 11:14physical therapist so now
- 11:16say you have a twinge in
- 11:17your shoulder who do you
- 11:19listen to um I'm gonna
- 11:22think about what that
- 11:23twinge is why do I have
- 11:26that twinge are we missing
- 11:28internal like what can I
- 11:29like is this like a rotator
- 11:31cuff problem or like you
- 11:32know is maybe my collarbone
- 11:34not grinding right I'll
- 11:35more try to think about why
- 11:37is this happening
- 11:41Yeah, so in that part,
- 11:42the physical therapist
- 11:43takes over because he wants
- 11:45to solve the problem.
- 11:46Yeah.
- 11:48Okay.
- 11:49I will tell you, I don't know.
- 11:52I think probably being a
- 11:53physical therapist would be
- 11:54an advantage if you were
- 11:55one of the younger athletes.
- 11:58But to be brutally honest,
- 11:59it's a massive advantage as
- 12:01a master's athlete.
- 12:03Understanding what you can
- 12:08push through and what you can't.
- 12:10And then being able to ask
- 12:12other physical therapists
- 12:14what they think about it.
- 12:15You know, and yeah,
- 12:19being able to kind of fix
- 12:20yourself is a pretty big,
- 12:23that's a huge advantage.
- 12:25I know some of the younger
- 12:27ones have always said
- 12:28during the off season,
- 12:29they listen to the physical
- 12:31therapist part of their brain.
- 12:33In a competition,
- 12:35they tell that person to shut up.
- 12:38Yeah.
- 12:39I mean, that's kind of,
- 12:41I think I'm thinking like a
- 12:43physical therapist during
- 12:44the warmups and stuff,
- 12:47but definitely not during
- 12:48the actual event.
- 12:49I like to think we're using
- 12:50physical therapy to maximize performance,
- 12:53not necessarily just to treat injuries.
- 12:57So you've been at this since 2008.
- 12:59What?
- 13:00That's a long time.
- 13:02Yeah.
- 13:04And you are going to your
- 13:06first CrossFit games.
- 13:08Yes, that's correct.
- 13:11So almost 20 years you've been at this,
- 13:14and you're heading to your
- 13:15first CrossFit Games.
- 13:17What is the excitement for
- 13:18you heading there this year?
- 13:22You know, I am really excited.
- 13:29It's kind of hard to put
- 13:30into words because it's
- 13:31taken a lot of work over a long time.
- 13:33But I think I'm mostly right now.
- 13:41Honestly,
- 13:41I don't know if you've ever heard
- 13:43the term like porthole mentality.
- 13:45Like I'm thinking about the
- 13:46training piece that I'm
- 13:47going to do tomorrow and
- 13:48just kind of focusing on
- 13:50doing the best that I can
- 13:51one day at a time at the
- 13:52things that I get there.
- 13:54And then once that gets into my circle,
- 13:59then we're going to focus
- 14:00on that first workout and
- 14:01then the second workout.
- 14:02You know what I mean?
- 14:03Yeah.
- 14:04I try not to get either too
- 14:08excited or too down on myself.
- 14:11Either way, instead,
- 14:14focus on what do I need to
- 14:15do right now in order to
- 14:17set myself up for success.
- 14:20Would it be safe to say that, you know,
- 14:22as an affiliate owner for 15 years,
- 14:26are the people around you
- 14:27that have been along this
- 14:29journey with you more
- 14:30excited than you are at this point?
- 14:35I'm definitely excited.
- 14:36I think I'm just too
- 14:37distracted by the amount of
- 14:38stuff that I have to do.
- 14:40Right.
- 14:41You know, that's, you know, uh, but yes,
- 14:44the people around me are
- 14:45extremely excited and, and very, you know,
- 14:48uh, yeah, they're,
- 14:50they're incredibly support supportive.
- 14:53What, what is their support meant to you?
- 14:56Oh my gosh.
- 14:57Like, you know, like, uh,
- 15:00Like, one of my, like,
- 15:03a couple of therapists,
- 15:04all three of them actually, Alyssa,
- 15:06Melissa,
- 15:06and Krisha have all helped me
- 15:08with my shoulder.
- 15:10You know,
- 15:11both Desiree and Margaret have
- 15:13helped cover classes so I
- 15:14can get workouts in or, like, you know,
- 15:19like, it's the world.
- 15:20It's not,
- 15:20it wouldn't be possible without them.
- 15:23It just simply wouldn't happen.
- 15:27It means the world.
- 15:30So I saw a post you made
- 15:31where you get up every
- 15:32morning at 4.30 a.m.
- 15:34to start.
- 15:36Basically,
- 15:37you've created a habit where you do a set,
- 15:40a number of exercises every
- 15:42morning to get ready for your day.
- 15:45Yeah,
- 15:45so I will get up now based on the
- 15:51time I get up changes a
- 15:53little bit based on where I
- 15:56got to get the kids to camp
- 15:57and what training I have to
- 15:58do and schedule, but yes.
- 16:00I wake up I Walk into the I
- 16:04mean my basically exact I
- 16:06was wake up I go to the
- 16:07bathroom Walk to the
- 16:08kitchen toss my coffee in
- 16:10the microwave my coffee is microwaving.
- 16:12I'll hit a bent knee soleus
- 16:15stretch Kind of make my
- 16:17coffee while I'm doing that
- 16:19and I'll do that for about
- 16:19two minutes go to the
- 16:23in the hallway,
- 16:24world's greatest on each side,
- 16:26couch stretch on each side.
- 16:27Then I'll sit with my,
- 16:28in a squat with my back on
- 16:29the wall and kind of turn and reach up.
- 16:31And I'll hold that for a
- 16:32couple of minutes on each side.
- 16:33And I do that seven days a week.
- 16:36Um, you know, and then there's,
- 16:39there's quite a bit of
- 16:40other stuff that I'll do, um,
- 16:41throughout the day, but that,
- 16:43that's kind of the, the, um, the,
- 16:48the minimum, um, that I'll do every day.
- 16:50Um,
- 16:52And I do that first thing when I wake up.
- 16:54When did you create that habit?
- 16:59I mean,
- 16:59I've been doing that for not
- 17:03necessarily those stretches.
- 17:05The stretches that I've done
- 17:06has kind of changed just
- 17:07based on my body and what I
- 17:08feel like the needs are.
- 17:10But the waking up and
- 17:12hitting kind of some mobility, oh, man,
- 17:15it's been a long time.
- 17:20And now it's just what you do.
- 17:21You don't even think about it.
- 17:23Yeah,
- 17:23I'm kind of like it's almost like I
- 17:26like have to do that before
- 17:27I can do anything else.
- 17:28You know, I it's yeah,
- 17:32that's just it's just kind of autopilot.
- 17:34But like one thing that I
- 17:36wish I could impart on
- 17:37people is like like when we
- 17:39do those exercises.
- 17:40Right.
- 17:41People think that.
- 17:43You know,
- 17:43we're kind of doing them to
- 17:44prepare for whatever it is
- 17:45we're about to do, which that's true.
- 17:47Yes.
- 17:47I want to be kind of
- 17:48loosened up and have good
- 17:49range of motion for the
- 17:50stuff that we're going to do,
- 17:51but that's not the main reason.
- 17:53The main reason is that
- 17:54we're trying to remodel
- 17:56tissue over the long term.
- 17:58Like a cell lives 90 to 120 days.
- 17:59And if you think of a cell, like a block,
- 18:02you know,
- 18:03your body's always replacing
- 18:04these blocks from the day
- 18:05you're born till the day you die.
- 18:07And so how it arranges the blocks though,
- 18:10is according to stress.
- 18:12If you sit around and don't do anything,
- 18:14like for example,
- 18:15your foot's in a cast and it's stuck,
- 18:17the body remodels the tissue,
- 18:19but it's what's called
- 18:20dense irregular connective
- 18:21tissue where the blocks are
- 18:22not lined up any particular way.
- 18:23Just think of like a bird's
- 18:25nest when you go fishing.
- 18:26It's just all everywhere.
- 18:28And so it's not designed to
- 18:29resist stress in any one direction.
- 18:31But if we're constantly
- 18:34doing things to maintain
- 18:35that range of motion,
- 18:36it's not going to go away.
- 18:38And it works very akin to
- 18:40compound interest.
- 18:41you know, we, we gotta, you gotta,
- 18:43you gotta put enough effort
- 18:44in to get that matching on your 401k.
- 18:46And that's kind of how this works.
- 18:49I like the way that it is
- 18:50setting yourself up for retirement.
- 18:52Yeah.
- 18:55Yeah.
- 18:55The older we get, the more we need those,
- 18:57everything put in the right place.
- 18:59Exactly.
- 19:00And if you,
- 19:01if you kind of start at a certain point,
- 19:04you don't ever stop doing it.
- 19:07You'll continuously get better.
- 19:10Uh,
- 19:11I don't know what the ceiling is,
- 19:14but it's so important to
- 19:17just do a little bit every day.
- 19:18There's so much value that
- 19:19can be gained from that.
- 19:24Is your plan to try to
- 19:25compete for as long as you can?
- 19:28You know, I'll always sign up and do it.
- 19:33What's going to change, though,
- 19:34is how much time I can put into it, like
- 19:40there's a lot of changes
- 19:41happening with my business
- 19:41this year and I'm going to
- 19:42have to really focus on that after this.
- 19:45Um,
- 19:45it doesn't mean I won't compete next
- 19:46year.
- 19:46I'll always sign up and do it, but I don't,
- 19:48I just don't know how much time, you know,
- 19:51with four kids,
- 19:52my schedule is not getting, uh,
- 19:54not getting freer, but like I will,
- 19:58I will always compete and
- 19:59do the best that I can, you know, uh,
- 20:03even cause I want,
- 20:05I want to make sure this,
- 20:06I want to support it
- 20:06financially cause I want to
- 20:07make sure it goes.
- 20:09Because, like I said,
- 20:10I guarantee you there are a
- 20:11lot of people that eat better,
- 20:13don't drink alcohol, do more mobility,
- 20:16blah, blah, blah.
- 20:18A lot of things.
- 20:19And we all have to support
- 20:21this for that to continue.
- 20:24How old are your kids?
- 20:26We got a 12, 9, 8, and 4.
- 20:29Okay.
- 20:30So you're just getting into
- 20:34the busy season.
- 20:36Yeah, I feel like we've kind of...
- 20:38Yeah.
- 20:38We've, we've been busy for a long time.
- 20:40You know, when my daughter hit high school,
- 20:43like we went into overdrive
- 20:44for like busyness.
- 20:45It was crazy.
- 20:46And I only had one.
- 20:49You know, it's okay.
- 20:50I mean, it's good though.
- 20:52You know, we want them to,
- 20:53we want them to get to do
- 20:54all kinds of stuff.
- 20:56Yeah, of course.
- 20:57She's 23 now and doing great.
- 20:59And now I have all the time
- 21:00in the world and wish I had
- 21:01more time with her.
- 21:03yeah, it's, uh, that's,
- 21:05there's going to come a
- 21:06time when they don't want
- 21:07to hang out with us anymore, but yeah,
- 21:09hopefully not for a long time.
- 21:11But so, uh,
- 21:13who all's heading to Birmingham
- 21:14with you right now?
- 21:17Just my wife.
- 21:18Um, and then say, I wanted to,
- 21:23I wanted to make sure when
- 21:24we're talking about the people,
- 21:25I mentioned Cragger training, uh,
- 21:27and Mary Solson,
- 21:28they've been coaching me
- 21:29and I've done a really awesome job.
- 21:31Uh,
- 21:32I don't know if they're going to,
- 21:33they're going to make it or not.
- 21:34Cause it's a ridiculously
- 21:35long way for them.
- 21:37But, uh, yeah, I know.
- 21:40Uh, definitely my,
- 21:41definitely my wife going,
- 21:42what's up buddy.
- 21:47I'll be, I'll be done in a minute.
- 21:48Okay.
- 21:49Just go play.
- 21:49Don't worry.
- 21:50We got an hour, another hour to play here.
- 21:53Yeah.
- 21:56So are you,
- 21:57are you the only Krieger masters athlete?
- 22:00I know that they,
- 22:00they've hit it pretty hard
- 22:02team and elite.
- 22:05You're the first masters
- 22:06athlete I've heard going with Krieger.
- 22:08There's, they had two more,
- 22:11but I don't know if they registered.
- 22:14Okay.
- 22:15I don't know.
- 22:15I, it's a long way for them.
- 22:19Uh,
- 22:20I was talking with my coach
- 22:21after semifinals.
- 22:22I was like,
- 22:23he was complaining to me about
- 22:24how it was like really hot in Norway.
- 22:26I was like, he,
- 22:27he told me what the
- 22:28temperature was and it
- 22:28equates to like 75 degrees.
- 22:30And I was like, Oh man, uh,
- 22:33have you been to Alabama?
- 22:34He's like, no.
- 22:35I was like, Oh dude.
- 22:37Yeah.
- 22:38You're going to a rainforest,
- 22:39but that's all good.
- 22:41Um, yeah, I think I, I, I'm not,
- 22:44I'm not sure if,
- 22:45if they're going or if the
- 22:46other two are going or not.
- 22:49What are your expectations this year?
- 22:55You know, I don't know.
- 22:58You know,
- 22:59it's kind of like you obviously
- 23:03want to win,
- 23:04but I can't control what
- 23:06everybody else does.
- 23:08Like,
- 23:09what I want to do is go out there and
- 23:10execute on each event to
- 23:14the very best of my ability
- 23:15and feel like I could not
- 23:16have done anything different.
- 23:19Yeah.
- 23:20Yeah.
- 23:21It sounds good.
- 23:21Um, I know you,
- 23:24you've got a lot going on right now,
- 23:25so I don't want to keep it too long.
- 23:27I want to thank you for
- 23:28taking the time out.
- 23:30We're going to be in Birmingham.
- 23:31We're doing a documentary
- 23:33behind the scenes.
- 23:35Uh, so we're going to be backstage,
- 23:37Ellie Hiller,
- 23:37myself talking to all the athletes, uh,
- 23:41and trying to capture the
- 23:43magic of what the master's divisions are.
- 23:46Yeah.
- 23:46I hope, um, that's,
- 23:47that's really nice of you to do that.
- 23:49Um,
- 23:49Because I think this has the
- 23:52potential to be a big thing
- 23:53because it's all... People
- 23:55can relate to us.
- 23:58Don't get me wrong.
- 24:00We love watching all the
- 24:02younger dudes snatch 315
- 24:04and do all this crazy stuff.
- 24:05But I don't have anything in
- 24:08common with them.
- 24:11And I think most people don't either.
- 24:12But we still think it's super cool.
- 24:14But with the Masters athletes, you...
- 24:19people have a lot more in
- 24:20common with them.
- 24:21Um, and I would,
- 24:24for anyone that says that
- 24:24they don't CrossFit doesn't
- 24:26make money off the masters athletes, just,
- 24:28uh, me being a businessman, I would,
- 24:31I would challenge that
- 24:32thought process just based
- 24:33on the open registration.
- 24:35Cause if you were to lose,
- 24:37if you were to lose the
- 24:38masters like games to think
- 24:41that that's not going to
- 24:42affect the open registration is,
- 24:44it's just an unrealistic,
- 24:45that's just not a realistic.
- 24:48I agree.
- 24:48thought process.
- 24:49Like it might not affect it
- 24:50that much the first year,
- 24:52but it would kill it in the longterm.
- 24:54My,
- 24:55my stats and info person did research
- 24:58from 35 to 54.
- 24:59The masters athletes have a
- 25:02combined 3 million
- 25:03followers on Instagram.
- 25:06Yeah.
- 25:07Like,
- 25:08and there's a lot of good we can do
- 25:10with this.
- 25:10You know, I mean the, the,
- 25:14Think of it inspires
- 25:15somebody to get moving get
- 25:16off the couch start taking
- 25:17better care of themselves.
- 25:18I think your masters athletes Definitely,
- 25:22especially when we see like the older,
- 25:24you know,
- 25:24like the 60 plus year old women
- 25:25doing bar muscle-ups That's
- 25:27freaking cool Yeah, that's really cool.
- 25:31I mean that's really cuz
- 25:31like then other people see
- 25:33it and they're like whoa
- 25:34and you know that motivates
- 25:35them to hopefully get to
- 25:36the gym and Take good care of themselves
- 25:40Yeah,
- 25:40and we just need to give you guys a
- 25:42vehicle to be able to show your story.
- 25:45That's what we're trying to do.
- 25:47Well, you're doing awesome, man.
- 25:48Really appreciate it.
- 25:49Well, Clint, thank you very much.
- 25:51And nobody can relate to you
- 25:53more than the world who has
- 25:56sat at a birthday party
- 25:58with their kid trying to
- 26:00get something accomplished.
- 26:01Yeah.
- 26:05So with that,
- 26:06thank you very much for
- 26:07taking the time out.
- 26:08Thank you to everybody who's listening.
- 26:10We'll see everybody next
- 26:11time on the Clydesdale Media Podcast.
