- 0:11Hello friends, it's Sean here. It's Thursday, it's the 9th of
- 0:15April, and I am delighted to have your company on this
- 0:19Cherish and Antique Day. Yes, today's the day that we are
- 0:24encouraged to cherish those old things in our lives and find out
- 0:28more about their stories. And I'm not suggesting that you
- 0:32ring up your grandmother or your parent and cherish them because
- 0:36an antique is only something that's over 100 years old.
- 0:39I have discovered anything like 50 to 100 years that's called
- 0:43vintage. So you can call them vintage and
- 0:46they probably won't appreciate that, but cherish an antique day
- 0:49is the day that you find all these old bits and bobs, these
- 0:52things that have outlasted all of us.
- 0:55And we talk about the history, we hear the stories that have
- 0:59been passed down in our families, and we keep those
- 1:01stories alive. So really, today's all about
- 1:04hearing the stories of our families and the things that
- 1:07have happened in the years before us and our generations.
- 1:10That sounds like a good idea to me.
- 1:12So enjoy your vintage family members, enjoy your antiques,
- 1:16and have a lovely day. But before you do that, before
- 1:18you have those conversations, we are going to dive into a story
- 1:23which is well and truly in antiquity, but echoes through
- 1:27the Holy Spirit in our hearts right through today as we read
- 1:32the living words of the living God from that story from long
- 1:36ago and are informed and shaped today.
- 1:39Oh, how exciting. Let's do that together, shall we
- 1:42friends? Let's read together Joshua
- 1:44chapter 3. Early the next morning, Joshua
- 1:57and all the Israelites left Acacia Grove and arrived at the
- 2:01banks of the Jordan River, where they camped before crossing.
- 2:05Three days later, the Israelite officers went through the camp,
- 2:08giving these instructions to the people.
- 2:11When you see the Levitical priests carrying the Ark of the
- 2:14Covenant of the Lord your God, move out from your positions and
- 2:19follow them. Since you have never travelled
- 2:21this way before, they will guide you.
- 2:24Stay about half a mile behind them, keeping a clear distance
- 2:28between you and the ark. Make sure you don't come any
- 2:31closer. Then Joshua told the people,
- 2:35Purify yourselves for tomorrow. The Lord will do great wonders
- 2:40among you. In the morning, Joshua said to
- 2:43the priests, lift up the Ark of the Covenant and lead the people
- 2:48across the river. And so they started out and went
- 2:52ahead of the people. The Lord told Joshua, Today I
- 2:56will begin to make you a great leader in the eyes of all the
- 3:00Israelites. They will know that I am with
- 3:03you just as I was with Moses. Give this command to the priests
- 3:08who carry the ark of the Covenant.
- 3:10When you reach the banks of the Jordan River, take a few steps
- 3:14into the river and stop there. So Joshua told the Israelites,
- 3:19come and listen to what the Lord your God says today.
- 3:23You will know that the living God is among you.
- 3:26He will surely drive out the Canaanites, Hittites, Hibites,
- 3:30Perizzites, Girgashites, Amorites, and Jebusites ahead of
- 3:34you. Look, the Ark of the Covenant,
- 3:38which belongs to the Lord of the whole earth, will lead you
- 3:41across the Jordan River. Now choose 12 men from the
- 3:46tribes of Israel, one from each tribe.
- 3:49The priests will carry the ark of the Lord, the Lord of all the
- 3:53earth. As soon as their feet touch the
- 3:55water, the flow of water will be cut off upstream, and the river
- 4:00will stand up like a wall. So the people left their camp to
- 4:05cross the Jordan, and the priests who were carrying the
- 4:08ark of the covenant went ahead of them.
- 4:10It was the harvest season, and the Jordan was overflowing its
- 4:14banks. But as soon as the feet of the
- 4:17priests who were carrying the ark touched the water at the
- 4:19river's edge, the water above that point began backing up a
- 4:23great distance away at a town called Adam, which is near
- 4:27Zarathan. And the water below that point
- 4:31flowed on to the Dead Sea until the river bed was dry.
- 4:35Then all the people crossed over near the town of Jericho.
- 4:40Meanwhile, the priests who were carrying the ark of the Lord's
- 4:43covenant stood on dry ground in the middle of the riverbed.
- 4:47As the people passed by. They waited until the whole
- 4:51nation of Israel had crossed the Jordan on dry ground.
- 5:05Oh Jesus, what a rich story this is as Israel steps out in faith
- 5:11and obedience and sees you do this wonderful miraculous thing.
- 5:18Oh Lord, as we live our lives, I wonder what Jordan rivers there
- 5:22are with the waters brimming up to the banks flowing so quickly
- 5:27and we think, I couldn't possibly, I couldn't possibly go
- 5:30there or do that or try that because it would just overcome
- 5:34me. My Lord, I wonder how many of us
- 5:39just need to have faith that we can step boldly into those
- 5:43spaces and that you will do miraculous things, that you will
- 5:47overcome the barriers, that you will stop the flow of challenge
- 5:52so that your will can be done. Lord, I pray that You give us
- 5:58discernment and wisdom to know when to step out, and the faith
- 6:03and obedience and courage to step out and to boldly proclaim
- 6:08You and to live in Your way even when that seems like a terrible
- 6:13idea that will get swept away for sure.
- 6:18Thank You that you have swept away sin and death and given us
- 6:23this incredible hope that we have living in you, our mighty
- 6:28God, our wonderful Saviour. And we pray all of this in your
- 6:32name, Jesus, Amen.
