- 0:00Hey guys, welcome back to Fostering Faith. It
- 0:03is October and I'm sitting here drinking coffee
- 0:05this morning as I record this podcast and I was
- 0:10just reading about the fruits of the spirit and
- 0:14that got me intrigued about let's do a series.
- 0:18That's something that we've really never done
- 0:19on this podcast and so let's walk through each
- 0:23fruit of the spirit and we're gonna start with
- 0:26the most important one. And so we're going to
- 0:28call this episode Love Like You Mean It, the
- 0:31root of every fruit. The fruit of the spirit
- 0:34is love. And so hey guys, welcome back to Fostering
- 0:36Faith. I'm so glad that you're here. And today
- 0:38we're going to be diving into one of the most
- 0:40powerful, convicting and world changing fruits
- 0:43of the spirit, love. And we were talking in my
- 0:48junior high group the other day and about how
- 0:50we use the word love. I love my coffee. I love
- 0:53my hamburger. I love my family. I love... you
- 0:57know, roadblocks or whatever have you. And it's
- 1:01not just I love my coffee, I love my car, I love
- 1:03Fridays kind of love. I'm talking about the kind
- 1:07of love that is God. The kind that isn't earned,
- 1:11it isn't deserved, it isn't quiet when people
- 1:17do it. And let's be honest love is easy when
- 1:21people act right. But the true test of spiritual
- 1:24maturity isn't how you treat people who treat
- 1:26you well. It's how you respond when you have
- 1:31every reason not to love, but you choose it anyway.
- 1:36And so we have Galatians 5 22 through 23 that
- 1:38says, but the fruit of the spirit is love, joy,
- 1:40peace, patience, kindness, goodness, gentleness,
- 1:42faithfulness, gentleness, and self -control.
- 1:45Against such things, there is no law. And so
- 1:48notice that love comes first. It's not random.
- 1:52It's the root that feeds every other fruit. Without
- 1:56love, there's no joy. There's no peace. Love
- 2:00is the soil at everything else grows in. And
- 2:03so today we're going to be looking at some truths.
- 2:06What is real biblical love? How is it that it
- 2:10shows up in your life and why Jesus said it's
- 2:13the greatest commandment? And so what is real
- 2:16love? In the Greek, agape means unconditional,
- 2:20sacrificial love, the kind that flows from God
- 2:22Himself. 1 John 4 .8 says that God is love, not
- 2:28God loves, but God is love. It's His nature.
- 2:32It's who He is. And that means when the fruit
- 2:34of the Spirit is in you, love isn't just something
- 2:37you do, it's who you become. In Romans 5 .8,
- 2:41it says, while we were still sinners, Christ
- 2:43died for us. That's love. He didn't wait for
- 2:47us to be lovable. He loved us whenever we were
- 2:50in a mess. And that's what the spirit wants to
- 2:55us to grow in. That kind of love that moves first,
- 2:57that forgives first, that loves loud. Love is
- 3:03real life. And so let's read the love chapter
- 3:06because you've heard it at every wedding. First
- 3:08Corinthians 13. Love is patient. Love is kind.
- 3:12It does not envy. It does not boast. It is not
- 3:16proud. It keeps no records of wrongs. We quoted
- 3:19at weddings, but Paul isn't writing this to a
- 3:22bride and groom. He's writing it to a church
- 3:24that is struggling to get along. So Paul says
- 3:28that love is patient. He's saying you don't give
- 3:31up on people just because they frustrate you.
- 3:34When he says love is kind, he means you show
- 3:38grace even when you have the right to be sharp.
- 3:43He says to keep no records of wrongs. How many
- 3:47times have we done that? How many times have
- 3:50you kept that scoreboard and you did this 20
- 3:52years ago and you did this 10 years ago and you
- 3:54did that last week and you did this? That's for
- 3:57all of us to keep in our heads, but love says
- 4:01there's no scorekeeping. Real love doesn't cancel
- 4:05people. It restores them. If you want to measure
- 4:09your spiritual growth, Don't look at how many
- 4:11Bible verses, you know Look at how you treat
- 4:14people who test your patience the most Because
- 4:18love isn't proven by words. It's proven by response
- 4:22And you have the greatest commandment in Matthew
- 4:2622 36 through 40 someone asked Jesus teacher.
- 4:30What is the greatest commandment in law and Jesus
- 4:34replies Love your Lord with all your heart and
- 4:37with all your mind and soul and with all With
- 4:40all your mind and this is the first and greatest
- 4:43commandment and the second is love your neighbor
- 4:45as yourself All the law and the prophets hang
- 4:49on these two commandments Jesus said everything
- 4:52Said everything the law The entire law hangs
- 4:56on love if love falls everything falls You can't
- 5:01truly love people if you don't love God first
- 5:03and you can't say you love God if you refuse
- 5:07to love people that were made in his image. Now
- 5:11hit that home, the people that you don't like
- 5:12right now. He made them. He loves them. How does
- 5:17that make you feel? And this is not about to
- 5:22make you feel bad or whatever, maybe a little
- 5:24bit, but we all have a chance to grow. No one's
- 5:27perfect. But as we, it's about progression, not
- 5:30perfection. It's about wrestling with, man, I
- 5:32really don't like them and you don't know what
- 5:34they did to me. I'm pretty sure that God said,
- 5:37I don't care. Look what you did to me. And yet
- 5:41I still love you. And that's why love is the
- 5:44root of every fruit. Because every other spiritual
- 5:48quality flows out of the heart. That like, that
- 5:53loves like Jesus. And the love that cost you.
- 5:57Jesus isn't saying that it's gonna be convenient.
- 6:03It cost him everything. He left heaven endured
- 6:08humiliation and Carried a cross for you to prove
- 6:12to you. That's this is what love is I think there's
- 6:16in there a song that says that this is this is
- 6:19what love is I think so But first John 3 16 says
- 6:24by this we know love that he laid down his life
- 6:27for us if you Think about it If your love never
- 6:34cost you anything, your comfort, your pride,
- 6:37your time, it's not agape. It's convenience.
- 6:41And sometimes love looks like you're biting your
- 6:44tongue. Sometimes love looks like forgiving without
- 6:48an apology. Sometimes love looks like showing
- 6:51up when you'd rather stay home. And it was funny
- 6:55that anyone that knows me knows that I am in
- 6:58bed 9 o 'clock, 8 45. Um, and, uh, we had went
- 7:04to one of our best friends basketball games,
- 7:06uh, her daughter, uh, shout out to Adele, uh,
- 7:09and the, uh, New Horizon Crusaders. They're crushing
- 7:11it. Um, and their game started at eight o 'clock
- 7:14one night this week. And, um, they're like, oh
- 7:17my gosh, I can't believe you came. I said, I
- 7:19know this is love because this is super inconvenient
- 7:22for me, but I'm going to show up. Um, and it's
- 7:25something silly, but still it's you're showing
- 7:27up. And you know what? That's what the Holy Spirit
- 7:32works best is when you're loving beyond your
- 7:37limits. And so how do you, how to grow in love?
- 7:41You can't fake this fruit. You can't grow it
- 7:45on your own. Love is not a personal trait. It's
- 7:48a result of abiding in Christ. And so John 15,
- 7:52four through five says, abide in me and I in
- 7:54you for apart from me, you can do nothing. And
- 7:59if you want to grow in love, what are you gonna
- 8:01do? You gotta spend time with love Himself, Jesus.
- 8:08You gotta let go of bitterness. You can't grow
- 8:10in fruit if you have poisoned soil. Love is not
- 8:15gonna grow in that. No, it's gonna be choked
- 8:18out. And ask the Spirit to give you His eyes
- 8:21for people and practice it. Love is strengthened
- 8:27through use, like with anything. It's like a
- 8:31bicep curl. You can't expect to have amazing
- 8:33arms if you never work at it. And so the more
- 8:37that you love, the more capacity that you're
- 8:39gonna have to. And so one, spend time with them.
- 8:43Two, you gotta let go to that bitterness. You
- 8:45cannot, you're not gonna have any room for anything
- 8:47else if that bitterness is crowding out the space
- 8:50for love. And three, ask that Holy Spirit to
- 8:53give you His eyes for the people. Let me see
- 8:56them how you see them. And you got to practice
- 8:59what you're preaching. You got to, you actually
- 9:01got to do it. And so love like you mean it. Friends,
- 9:05love isn't a feeling. It's a decision. It's a
- 9:10way of living that says, God, I'm going to respond
- 9:13like you would. Is that going to happen right
- 9:16out of the gate? No. That's why we walk with
- 9:18Christ and that's why he matures us. In the world
- 9:22that screams me first, love worships you first.
- 9:29In a culture that cancels, love restores. In
- 9:33relationships that break, love builds. And in
- 9:37the moment that hurt, love heals. And when you
- 9:42walk in the spirit, love isn't an option, it's
- 9:45evidence. John 13 35 says, by this everyone will
- 9:49know that you are my disciple if you love one
- 9:52another. And that's how the world will know that
- 9:56you belong to Jesus. Not by your church attendance
- 9:59or your playlist or your post, but how you love
- 10:04people who are hard to love. So maybe this week
- 10:08instead of asking God to change someone else,
- 10:11ask him to change your heart. Because whenever
- 10:14you grow in his love, Everything changes around
- 10:18you. And so we would love to pray for you guys.
- 10:22Dear Heavenly Father, thank you so much for today.
- 10:24Thank you so much for yesterday. Thank you for
- 10:26these listeners. Thank you that you show up for
- 10:29us and you show us what real love is like. Thank
- 10:32you for loving us whenever we were unlovable.
- 10:35Teach us to love like you, to forgive, to be
- 10:38patient, to be kind. Let the Spirit fill us so
- 10:41completely that love becomes our natural response.
- 10:44Help us to love with all of our heart, soul,
- 10:48and mind, and to love others as you have loved
- 10:51us. Let your love be rooted in everything that
- 10:54we say or do. In Jesus' name I pray. Amen. If
- 10:59this message helped you, if you know someone
- 11:01that it's hard to love, if you know someone that
- 11:04is really angry or bitter or is just going through
- 11:07a really rough time, send this episode to them.
- 11:10Make sure that you comment, make sure that you
- 11:11share it, and help our little podcast grow. We
