- 0:00Speaker 1: And now move the sticks with Daniel Jeremiah and Bucky Brooks.
- 0:07Speaker 1: What's up? Everybody?
- 0:07Speaker 2: Welcome to move the sticks, DJ and Bucky with you.
- 0:10Speaker 2: No Reht today, he's got like a power issue, Buck.
- 0:13Speaker 2: I guess they said it's like they got to cut
- 0:14Speaker 2: the power because of fire issues. I don't know if
- 0:18Speaker 2: I believe it, but anyways, we wish Rhet all the best.
- 0:22Speaker 1: So no, yeah, I'm good, no PBu. But like I
- 0:24Speaker 1: was going to share this Rett, So I was watching.
- 0:26Speaker 1: I was in Pittsburgh for the Jazz game against the Steelers.
- 0:29Speaker 1: I'm at the bar, I'm watching Penn State in Indiana
- 0:33Speaker 1: and lor and behold, it turned.
- 0:34Speaker 2: Out to be like a close game fight, yeah, going back.
- 0:38Speaker 1: And forth, and so I was looking forward to hearing
- 0:40Speaker 1: Pbu's thoughts on how his team just came up short
- 0:43Speaker 1: because they look they were in the game the entire game.
- 0:46Speaker 1: It was back and forth a fair It was a
- 0:47Speaker 1: really good game, but it was kind of funny watching
- 0:50Speaker 1: it in a very Penn State heavy environ.
- 0:52Speaker 2: Oh, I can imagine, absolutely, you were at a big game.
- 0:55Speaker 2: We're going to get to that one second here, but
- 0:58Speaker 2: we're gonna lead off not with the game. I would
- 1:00Speaker 2: because that was kind of a clunker with the charters
- 1:02Speaker 2: and the Bears. Bot To me, I thought the story
- 1:04Speaker 2: of the day, the game of the day was the
- 1:07Speaker 2: Cincinnati Bengals what they did to the forty nine ers.
- 1:10Speaker 2: And if you recall a few weeks ago, I remember
- 1:13Speaker 2: we said, man, if the Bengals can get the five
- 1:15Speaker 2: hundred and get to the buy, I know, yeah, I know,
- 1:18Speaker 2: you can look at this schedule like, I don't know, Man,
- 1:20Speaker 2: they come out, they got the Niners and the Bills,
- 1:21Speaker 2: and I'm like, hold on, now, if they can just
- 1:23Speaker 2: get the five hundred and then you get Burrow rested
- 1:27Speaker 2: and healthy and you bring him back, there's no team
- 1:29Speaker 2: that they're scared of, like when they're when he's healthy,
- 1:32Speaker 2: When that dude's healthy, Like what did he say? The
- 1:34Speaker 2: window is my career?
- 1:35Speaker 1: Like that?
- 1:36Speaker 2: Yeah, And that was that was quintessential Joe Burrow right there.
- 1:39Speaker 2: He carved them up like a Thanksgiving turkey and that's
- 1:41Speaker 2: a good defense.
- 1:42Speaker 1: Yeah. He not only carved them up, and he ran
- 1:44Speaker 1: around a little bit and made some plays every third
- 1:46Speaker 1: down conversion with his legs. You talk about a team
- 1:48Speaker 1: that fees off the swag off their quarterback. This is
- 1:51Speaker 1: a team that fees off of all that competitive energy
- 1:53Speaker 1: that he brings. And for the Bengals, man, there's something
- 1:58Speaker 1: about DJ when you have that Championshi leveled experience. Even
- 2:01Speaker 1: though they came up short in the Super Bowl, but
- 2:02Speaker 1: they played playoff games, they played meaningful games, they knocked
- 2:05Speaker 1: off top teams. They're not worried about the Niners and
- 2:09Speaker 1: all that other stuff, and they played with it like
- 2:11Speaker 1: a team that wasn't worried about the off factor that
- 2:14Speaker 1: sometimes the Niners have, because let's be honest, I've been
- 2:17Speaker 1: around teams where the niners reputation as a physical team
- 2:22Speaker 1: precedes their arrival, and so you talk about it, you're
- 2:24Speaker 1: talking about how physical they are. You talk about, hey,
- 2:25Speaker 1: we gonna get ready for that. The Bengals didn't seem
- 2:29Speaker 1: bothered by that at all. And you know, their defense,
- 2:32Speaker 1: lou Ana Romo continues to do a great job of
- 2:35Speaker 1: getting it done. And early in the year you talked
- 2:37Speaker 1: about them getting the five hundred because of Joe Burrow's injuries.
- 2:41Speaker 1: I thought they just needed to kind of wait for
- 2:43Speaker 1: the young guys to kind of assimilate into his scheme. Remember,
- 2:47Speaker 1: they lost three starters, Eli Apple, von Bell Jesse Bates
- 2:50Speaker 1: in the secondary. So sixty percent of your secondary. Because
- 2:53Speaker 1: I'm saying they play a Niffl front, they're gone. So
- 2:58Speaker 1: you got these young guys coming in, Daxie, these other
- 3:00Speaker 1: guys coming in, and it took them a while to
- 3:02Speaker 1: settle in. But now they're settling in and they're beginning
- 3:04Speaker 1: to play this type of defense that we've seen for
- 3:06Speaker 1: years from the Bengals.
- 3:07Speaker 2: They're really good at linebacker. Hendrickson is playing elite, elite
- 3:12Speaker 2: level coming off the edge. Here's my question. I was
- 3:15Speaker 2: just thinking about this and I know the Miami Dolphin,
- 3:17Speaker 2: the high flying Miami Dolphins. I'll phrase it to you
- 3:19Speaker 2: this way. Is there a team that has that can
- 3:24Speaker 2: cause more problems with the different things they can do offensively?
- 3:28Speaker 2: Because Joe, Joe's gonna run more than Tua. You saw
- 3:31Speaker 2: that with Joe healthy. I mean he had third and
- 3:32Speaker 2: nine early in the game. Whu Fungu's got a clean
- 3:34Speaker 2: run on him, He just makes a miss and picks
- 3:36Speaker 2: up a first down. So he had three of those runs, No,
- 3:39Speaker 2: I think four ended up in first on, a second nine,
- 3:41Speaker 2: a second six, a second one. And you add that element,
- 3:45Speaker 2: plus you've got the screen game you've got three like
- 3:48Speaker 2: Miami's got the two dudes, They've got three dudes that
- 3:51Speaker 2: they can get going in the passing game. So you
- 3:53Speaker 2: got the screen game, you got that. You've got a
- 3:55Speaker 2: quarterback you can move the pocket, he can run. I
- 3:57Speaker 2: feel like they is there a team that gives you
- 3:59Speaker 2: more to warry about, is what I'm getting at than
- 4:01Speaker 2: what they do.
- 4:02Speaker 1: They can do a lot of things in DJ you
- 4:04Speaker 1: talked about all the stuff and they haven't even got
- 4:05Speaker 1: Joe Mixon really going. You a flashes and glimpses of it.
- 4:08Speaker 1: But they still have the power running game if they
- 4:11Speaker 1: want to lean back into it. And as Zach Taylor
- 4:14Speaker 1: kind of continues to find the identity of this team
- 4:17Speaker 1: or re establish the identity's team, You're right, there's so
- 4:19Speaker 1: multiple on the offense, they can create a bunch of problems.
- 4:23Speaker 1: But to me, their secret sauce in winning is their defense.
- 4:27Speaker 1: As much as they can do offensively, the multiplicity of
- 4:30Speaker 1: what they do offensively, they do the same thing on defense.
- 4:34Speaker 1: I mean, they are a sound defense. They can change
- 4:36Speaker 1: the picture. They can go from cover zero to regular
- 4:39Speaker 1: traditional zones to zone dog into man blitzing. They can
- 4:43Speaker 1: do all those things. They have it all in the package,
- 4:44Speaker 1: and so it is a team that they're in a
- 4:48Speaker 1: tough division. But if they kind of find their way
- 4:51Speaker 1: into the tournament, not a lot of teams want to
- 4:53Speaker 1: see that. That's that you want to be on your
- 4:56Speaker 1: line like, oh, that's right. We have the Bengals. Yeah,
- 5:00Speaker 1: too much experience. That was a wake up call.
- 5:02Speaker 2: And they got the Bills next, So that'll be a
- 5:04Speaker 2: big one, A big, big matchup between the Bengals and
- 5:07Speaker 2: the Bills. Always good when those teams get together. How
- 5:08Speaker 2: about how about the other side though, the Niners. I mean,
- 5:11Speaker 2: this is three in a row now, and the brock
- 5:13Speaker 2: Purty stuff, that noise, that chatter is getting a little louder.
- 5:17Speaker 2: Just your take on that one. It is getting a
- 5:20Speaker 2: little louder.
- 5:21Speaker 1: And for the first time, I can see it impacting
- 5:25Speaker 1: brock Purty. I feel like he's playing outside of himself
- 5:29Speaker 1: a little bit. I happen to catch like the second
- 5:32Speaker 1: half at the airport and I'm looking at him throw
- 5:36Speaker 1: interceptions on back to back plays, and I'm talking about
- 5:39Speaker 1: like bad interceptions, like where you're like bright, you don't
- 5:43Speaker 1: need to force it, Like what are we doing? Like
- 5:45Speaker 1: you've been so good for so long because you know
- 5:47Speaker 1: your game, you know where that dead line is in
- 5:50Speaker 1: terms of like my risk taking. I can go to
- 5:53Speaker 1: this and I feel like he's trying to do too much.
- 5:56Speaker 1: And I don't know why he's trying to do too much.
- 5:58Speaker 1: I don't know what it is, like I see everyone,
- 6:00Speaker 1: hears everything. Is he trying to prove the people that
- 6:02Speaker 1: he's a franchise guy's opposed to keep playing. But he's
- 6:05Speaker 1: turned the ball over more in the last three games
- 6:07Speaker 1: than we've ever seen him. I mean, DJ, he's turning
- 6:11Speaker 1: it over. And that's the one thing that we used
- 6:13Speaker 1: to appreciate about him. He took care of it. I mean,
- 6:15Speaker 1: whether you called him a game manager or those things,
- 6:17Speaker 1: he took care of the ball. And so that's that's
- 6:20Speaker 1: I mean, that was something that was very appealing about
- 6:22Speaker 1: him being the starting quarterback.
- 6:23Speaker 2: Yeah, and the Bill just put it in the chat.
- 6:24Speaker 2: There are three touchdowns, five picks in the last three games.
- 6:27Speaker 2: I would just say, you know, and Buck, you've got
- 6:30Speaker 2: the track background, so you know you talk about a
- 6:32Speaker 2: negative split, right, you know you're going to run that.
- 6:34Speaker 2: If you're running eight hundred, that second lap faster than
- 6:36Speaker 2: the first. They're not a negative split team, they have
- 6:39Speaker 2: to get out to a big lead and then any
- 6:41Speaker 2: kind of cruise on that second lap. They're not built
- 6:44Speaker 2: to play from behind, man.
- 6:46Speaker 1: No, they're not built to play from behind because their
- 6:48Speaker 1: passing game is all play action passing. And so when
- 6:50Speaker 1: you're behind, and if you're behind by a significant margin
- 6:53Speaker 1: and maybe a touchdown or more, when now I'm ignoring
- 6:56Speaker 1: to run, you're not going to run your way back
- 6:58Speaker 1: into the game with seventeen minutes left, like, oh yeah,
- 7:01Speaker 1: it takes too long for you to score points running
- 7:03Speaker 1: and running and running. We're ignoring this. So now we're
- 7:06Speaker 1: sitting back and DJ. One of the reasons why we
- 7:09Speaker 1: talked about Kyle Shanahan being the quarterback risper is because
- 7:12Speaker 1: his things were so easy for the quarterback to the cipher. Well,
- 7:15Speaker 1: it's really easy to make these two and three man
- 7:18Speaker 1: routes available to the quarterback when you're play action faking everything.
- 7:23Speaker 1: So now the linebackers up there these huge voids from
- 7:27Speaker 1: five to fifteen yards where these guys can sit down
- 7:30Speaker 1: in space. When you take the running game out of
- 7:33Speaker 1: it and guys are playing coverage, they they have more
- 7:36Speaker 1: guys and coverage than you have available in the options
- 7:40Speaker 1: of the route and without moving the second level with playfas.
- 7:46Speaker 1: Now you got to make tight win the throws, and
- 7:48Speaker 1: we saw rock Purdy doesn't have the arm talent to
- 7:51Speaker 1: make the throws that Mahomes and Josh Allen and some
- 7:55Speaker 1: of these elite talents can make from the quarterback spot.
- 7:59Speaker 2: Yeah, you know, look, I think, look he did some
- 8:02Speaker 2: good things at the end, and talk about them not
- 8:04Speaker 2: being a team really to play from behind. He made
- 8:05Speaker 2: some nice throws and kind of extending plays and moving
- 8:08Speaker 2: the pocket. And look, they get Trent Williams back, they
- 8:10Speaker 2: get Debo back, they'll be better. So I mean, I'm
- 8:14Speaker 2: not saying this is the end for brock Perty. It's
- 8:16Speaker 2: just it's a little bit of a hiccup, which is
- 8:17Speaker 2: to be expected. This game is hard, this league's good.
- 8:19Speaker 2: You're not going to have a smooth ride all the
- 8:21Speaker 2: way through. He had had a smooth ride for a
- 8:23Speaker 2: long time and now he's got some adversity. But you know,
- 8:25Speaker 2: the thing about him is we might wonder about the
- 8:28Speaker 2: elite high end traits, but there's no wonder or worry
- 8:31Speaker 2: about the makeup and the resolve with him. Like he'll
- 8:33Speaker 2: he'll get going he'll bounce back, and that's a really
- 8:36Speaker 2: good Bengals team coming off of a bye. So I
- 8:39Speaker 2: don't want to get too carried away with that one.
- 8:41Speaker 1: Yeah, I think all quarterbacks have to go through this,
- 8:45Speaker 1: and DJ, I mean have many games. He's into his tenure,
- 8:49Speaker 1: he's still to have a full sixteen or seventeen game starter.
- 8:52Speaker 1: Like when the film starts circulating around the league and
- 8:54Speaker 1: you have to begin to deal with some of the
- 8:56Speaker 1: adaptations and some of the changes that these teams will make,
- 8:59Speaker 1: that's when you really get a chance to see. Now
- 9:01Speaker 1: we'll have an opportunity to see how does he counter
- 9:04Speaker 1: to the counters, meaning how does he adapt to the
- 9:07Speaker 1: tatics that he's getting that people are using to take
- 9:10Speaker 1: away the things that he's been good at for so long.
- 9:13Speaker 1: As a starter for the Niners, how he bounces back
- 9:16Speaker 1: and responds will ultimately determine whether the Niners can get
- 9:19Speaker 1: back to playing at a high level. I expect him
- 9:21Speaker 1: to get back to that. He and his coach, they'll
- 9:23Speaker 1: figure out what team's doing. But it's a lot of
- 9:26Speaker 1: stuff that's going on. They got to do a better
- 9:28Speaker 1: job of You talked about their recipe playing from in
- 9:30Speaker 1: front Shanahan is more pressure those openers, those scripts. They
- 9:35Speaker 1: got to figure out how it went get severst quarterly.
- 9:38Speaker 1: And it's funny because going back to my time when
- 9:40Speaker 1: I was playing against his dad's Denver Broncos teams, we
- 9:43Speaker 1: always said they played to get fourteen points in the
- 9:46Speaker 1: first quarter because when they were hit they had Greg
- 9:48Speaker 1: Robinson doing wacky stuff on defense. But that's how they
- 9:52Speaker 1: won games. They always played from in front. And so
- 9:54Speaker 1: it's a great observation by you, And it was a
- 9:56Speaker 1: reminded me like, oh yeah, Like that's kind of the
- 9:59Speaker 1: base of the Shanahan system. Get up early so they
- 10:03Speaker 1: can run it when they want to. And people said
- 10:06Speaker 1: it about Koa, people said it about Kubiak.
- 10:09Speaker 2: With the with the Texans when he was there, as
- 10:12Speaker 2: obviously Kubiak played for Mike Shanahan. It's that that offense,
- 10:15Speaker 2: and that was the same that was kind of his thing. Man,
- 10:16Speaker 2: if they get on you like they can, you got
- 10:19Speaker 2: Shops play action and now you're they're gonna wear you.
- 10:23Speaker 1: Those dudes. Now you're gearing up for the running game.
- 10:26Speaker 1: So now when Shop throws it, they're they're throwing explosive plays,
- 10:30Speaker 1: stretching the lead out as opposed to trying to gain ground.
- 10:32Speaker 2: Great, by the way, is that the comp for brock
- 10:35Speaker 2: perty might be they m I've never thought I know
- 10:39Speaker 2: even this. Literally, I just came. I'm just taking a
- 10:41Speaker 2: lot a loud here. A Matt Shop put up some
- 10:43Speaker 2: big numbers in that Houston offense. Andre Johnson company.
- 10:46Speaker 1: Yeah, like physically they're not the same, but that's a
- 10:48Speaker 1: great observation. Uh. He was a perfect point guard for
- 10:51Speaker 1: what they had. They had everybody man who was the
- 10:53Speaker 1: big receiver they had, was it Kevin Walter? It went
- 10:55Speaker 1: opposite yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, the big, big white dude
- 10:58Speaker 1: right yeah to the big wide receivers had tight ends
- 11:01Speaker 1: Galoord and they would come in there Own Daniels and
- 11:03Speaker 1: all those guys and the play action passing game and
- 11:06Speaker 1: Aaron Foster running for a bunch of yards. That's a
- 11:08Speaker 1: good observation because they did have all the weapons around
- 11:11Speaker 1: Matt Shop and Matt Shop was going for a million yards.
- 11:14Speaker 1: I think it was a two time pro bowler in Houston.
- 11:17Speaker 2: Rod Perdy went back when four thousand yards was the number.
- 11:19Speaker 1: Yeah yeah, and brock Perdy could could be on a
- 11:22Speaker 1: similar plight, even though their games aren't the same. But yes,
- 11:25Speaker 1: they're very very similar in terms of style of play,
- 11:27Speaker 1: in what you did in terms of managing them and
- 11:30Speaker 1: managing how they were able to have success.
- 11:33Speaker 2: All right, how about the game you were at Jags? Man,
- 11:35Speaker 2: it's another big win. The Jags are rolling man twenty
- 11:37Speaker 2: to ten over the Steelers on the road.
- 11:40Speaker 1: Yeah, DJ, this is funny. So like for me, and
- 11:42Speaker 1: you know, when you're close to a team, like you
- 11:45Speaker 1: kind of learned the ins and outs the end and
- 11:47Speaker 1: working of the team. And the funny thing for me is,
- 11:50Speaker 1: and I think a lot of coaches and personnel guys,
- 11:53Speaker 1: we all struggle with this preseason expectations versus regular season realities.
- 11:59Speaker 1: So this season expectation, this team was gonna be a
- 12:03Speaker 1: lighted up offense. Hey man, they're gonna put forty burgers
- 12:05Speaker 1: on everybody. Who's gonna stop Calvin Ridley and Christian Kirk
- 12:08Speaker 1: and Evan Ingram and this stuff. And that was the
- 12:11Speaker 1: expectation the first two or three games. But when they
- 12:13Speaker 1: stumbled out the gate offensively trying to find that identity,
- 12:16Speaker 1: couldn't get it going. Had to start running the ball
- 12:18Speaker 1: with Travis atty end a funny thing happened the defense
- 12:22Speaker 1: started playing well. This defense leads the league in takeaways.
- 12:25Speaker 1: They have eighteen takeaways. Eighteen takeaways, and it's a continuation
- 12:30Speaker 1: of what they did last year. Like last year they
- 12:32Speaker 1: lived off the takeaways at the end. The other thing
- 12:36Speaker 1: outside of takeaways, the toughness and the tenasty that this
- 12:40Speaker 1: team is suddenly showing. It's kind of their identity. So
- 12:46Speaker 1: part of the reason, and I'll say this, they haven't
- 12:49Speaker 1: told me this directly, but it's the sense that it
- 12:51Speaker 1: got being around it. Part of the reason they took
- 12:54Speaker 1: Trayvon Walker at number one overall, when you look at
- 12:57Speaker 1: the Jaguars playing on early downs, they play a five
- 12:59Speaker 1: man front. It's kind of like a hybrid bear defense, right,
- 13:03Speaker 1: So they have Trayvon Walker and Josh Allen lined out wide,
- 13:07Speaker 1: but they're kind of in that wide nine, but in
- 13:10Speaker 1: an upright stance looking in. One of the reasons why
- 13:14Speaker 1: they wanted Trayvon Walker is they wanted him to absolutely
- 13:16Speaker 1: beat up tight ends and beat up the edge defenders
- 13:20Speaker 1: so they could eliminate the running game. So a lot
- 13:23Speaker 1: of our focus at number one is always like odd sacks.
- 13:27Speaker 1: They don't give up yards on the ground. DJ I
- 13:29Speaker 1: think the still has had maybe seventy yards or whatever
- 13:32Speaker 1: they had on it. It was nothing. And so what
- 13:34Speaker 1: they're able to do is they able to stop the run.
- 13:36Speaker 1: They fortunately to a one dimensional game plan, and then
- 13:38Speaker 1: they're playing zone and coverage and getting tips and overthrows
- 13:42Speaker 1: and all those other things and they're catching them. And
- 13:46Speaker 1: so this team has become kind of a team that
- 13:48Speaker 1: embraces the bully ball persona, the mentality, and then it's
- 13:53Speaker 1: kind of filtering into their defense because when I talk
- 13:55Speaker 1: to the O line after the game, they talked about,
- 13:59Speaker 1: we're not going to a let opponents bully us. Like
- 14:01Speaker 1: when people talk about all we're gonna bully. The physicality
- 14:04Speaker 1: thing is never going to be in question. And so
- 14:07Speaker 1: a team that was expected in my mind to be
- 14:09Speaker 1: a little more finesse has become far more physical and
- 14:13Speaker 1: far more complimentary in their style in terms of how
- 14:17Speaker 1: they win games. They are a complimentary football team, with
- 14:20Speaker 1: the defense setting up the offense and the special team
- 14:23Speaker 1: setting up both faces the facets to win games.
- 14:27Speaker 2: I'm curious on just like to get off the bus
- 14:30Speaker 2: factor obviously, Trayvon Walker, Josh Allen, both six or five
- 14:34Speaker 2: big dudes, secondary big guys. You feel like every week.
- 14:38Speaker 2: You know, we go down there, you're on the field,
- 14:40Speaker 2: so you see it in Warmost every week. The Jaguars
- 14:42Speaker 2: just look like a big team compared to other people
- 14:44Speaker 2: you're looking at every week.
- 14:46Speaker 1: Absolutely, the front, the front seven, the front seven looks
- 14:49Speaker 1: like DJ And look, I would give Trimbalky credit for
- 14:52Speaker 1: this if you think back to those old forty nine
- 14:55Speaker 1: ers teams when he and Harbor were there. Remember they
- 14:58Speaker 1: look get off the bus justin I mean, I mean
- 15:00Speaker 1: Willis And it's a continuation of like Bill Parcells and
- 15:05Speaker 1: Nick Saban, they've all said this, like there's a reason
- 15:07Speaker 1: why they're weight classes in boxing. And if you have
- 15:10Speaker 1: a big, physical team, the cumultive effect of them, those
- 15:13Speaker 1: guys beating on you down, down, up to down, they
- 15:16Speaker 1: wear out those smaller teams. And they do that the
- 15:19Speaker 1: one aspect where they can increase the size in the
- 15:23Speaker 1: secondary because you have Tyson Campbell, Andre Cisco now is huge,
- 15:27Speaker 1: Ray Shewon Jenkins, you know he's a bigger. Yeah, So
- 15:31Speaker 1: they have that where they're putting it in place. But
- 15:34Speaker 1: you're right, they look the part. And because they look
- 15:37Speaker 1: the part, they're embracing a little more of the physicality.
- 15:40Speaker 1: The grittiness to grime me grind it out nature. And
- 15:44Speaker 1: it's surprising because offensively, you would think that there would
- 15:46Speaker 1: be a finest team with all the receivers and playmakers,
- 15:49Speaker 1: but they're beginning to kind of have that style on
- 15:51Speaker 1: the offense to match what they do on defense.
- 15:53Speaker 2: I take away on the stealers from what you saw
- 15:56Speaker 2: from them, the margin.
- 15:57Speaker 1: For area is so small for the still is because
- 16:00Speaker 1: their offense they can't score, and so what it does
- 16:02Speaker 1: is it puts a lot of pressure on their defense
- 16:05Speaker 1: to not necessarily have to play a perfect game. But
- 16:08Speaker 1: it's funny because Doug Peterson told me this. I think
- 16:10Speaker 1: the Steelers when they hold opponents under twenty two points,
- 16:15Speaker 1: they might be like twenty five and five or some
- 16:18Speaker 1: ridiculous number, but DJ you know, in the National Football League,
- 16:21Speaker 1: like that's holding people. It's hard, and so they just
- 16:26Speaker 1: don't have the wiggle room where they can't they can't
- 16:29Speaker 1: have a stinker game on defense. They have to play
- 16:32Speaker 1: at an a level all the time because they just
- 16:34Speaker 1: can't generate points. Kenny Pikett went out the game at
- 16:37Speaker 1: the end of the first alb met mister Bisky had
- 16:39Speaker 1: to come in and they just couldn't utilize their weapons.
- 16:43Speaker 1: George Pickens is real. He only had one catch up.
- 16:45Speaker 1: I mean he's he looks apart. He did a great
- 16:47Speaker 1: warm up routine. Watching him now, just watching him like,
- 16:51Speaker 1: I love how meticulous he was. He just didn't get
- 16:53Speaker 1: many opportunities. But the one that he did, he catches it,
- 16:56Speaker 1: hurdles the defender goes and scores. They just have to
- 16:59Speaker 1: figure out a way to make their top players, George Pickens,
- 17:02Speaker 1: Deontay Johnson, whoever they decide is a guy in the backfield,
- 17:05Speaker 1: whether it's Nijah, Harris or Warren. They got to make
- 17:09Speaker 1: sure that those guys get enough touches to have an
- 17:11Speaker 1: impact on the game. That has to be the focal point.
- 17:13Speaker 1: I love the plays, but the players need to make
- 17:16Speaker 1: sure that they are having a major impact by making
- 17:18Speaker 1: sure you get them enough touches.
- 17:20Speaker 2: Yeah, well, it's it's not an easy watch with their offense,
- 17:24Speaker 2: and I know Matt Canada catches a lot of grief.
- 17:26Speaker 2: Their pick it got hurt in this game. Trubisky wasn't
- 17:28Speaker 2: much better. So we'll see what happens there with the Steelers.
- 17:31Speaker 2: I'll go quickly through my game. I was at the
- 17:33Speaker 2: Chargers and the Bears game this Sunday night er. It
- 17:37Speaker 2: was a game, but the Chargers were in control early,
- 17:39Speaker 2: never really relinquished. They had some big stops. On fourth down.
- 17:43Speaker 2: Tyson Bagent hit a big throw forty one yards first
- 17:46Speaker 2: play the game, and I'm sitting there thinking like, oh,
- 17:47Speaker 2: they might they might get going a little bit here
- 17:50Speaker 2: with the with the rookie, and then they kind of
- 17:51Speaker 2: shut that down.
- 17:53Speaker 1: Herbert.
- 17:54Speaker 2: They came out chucking at thirty one to forty. He
- 17:56Speaker 2: ended up with just under three hundred yards three touchdowns,
- 17:59Speaker 2: but gosh, you had like to twenty or something like
- 18:01Speaker 2: that in the first half. Austin Eckler finally got back
- 18:03Speaker 2: involved in the passing game screen touchdown. He had seven
- 18:06Speaker 2: for ninety four, and Quintin Johnston finally got some balls.
- 18:09Speaker 2: It's interesting, that will be my takeaway here with Quinton Johnston.
- 18:13Speaker 2: A lot has been made about that pick and how
- 18:15Speaker 2: he hasn't done anything, and all these other rookie receivers
- 18:17Speaker 2: are playing well, and I it's not I'm on record,
- 18:21Speaker 2: you know, or my wise. My thoughts were on Jordan
- 18:23Speaker 2: Addison and some of those other guys.
- 18:25Speaker 1: But.
- 18:27Speaker 2: They got to figure how to use him. And I
- 18:29Speaker 2: think sometimes you can be typecast because your body type.
- 18:32Speaker 2: Like you look at him, he must be a fifty
- 18:34Speaker 2: to fifty guy, like he's That's not who he is.
- 18:37Speaker 2: He is a slant run after catch, pitch him, get
- 18:40Speaker 2: him a quick hitter. Or he is an over the
- 18:42Speaker 2: top home run ball I'm talking posts, goes deep overs
- 18:45Speaker 2: like that's that's his game. Fifty to fifty balls. They
- 18:48Speaker 2: throw him one in this one. It didn't come down
- 18:50Speaker 2: with it. He hasn't really come down with those this year,
- 18:52Speaker 2: but he's caught some back shoulders things like that. Sometimes
- 18:56Speaker 2: I think it's an adjustment not just for the player.
- 18:59Speaker 2: Sometimes I think it's an adjustment for the staff of
- 19:02Speaker 2: kind of learning the player and what he is and
- 19:04Speaker 2: he can't go off type cast of just what they
- 19:06Speaker 2: look like.
- 19:07Speaker 1: Yeah, that's a good observation. DJ. When you go back
- 19:09Speaker 1: in his background, I think he was a big time
- 19:11Speaker 1: high jumper. So part of the reason that you may
- 19:15Speaker 1: assume that if you're coaching, you said in those meetings
- 19:18Speaker 1: and all you heard the scouts talk about was, oh,
- 19:21Speaker 1: this is a great athlete. He got this track and
- 19:23Speaker 1: field background, he's this great leaper. So naturally your mind is, oh, well,
- 19:27Speaker 1: we're gonna put him in one on one situations. We're
- 19:30Speaker 1: gonna let him go get the ball off the top
- 19:32Speaker 1: of the back. For what he's gonna make all these plays.
- 19:33Speaker 1: He's going to expand the strikes on for Herbert. But
- 19:35Speaker 1: then what you're saying is really what he was, how
- 19:38Speaker 1: he's utilized at TCU. They utilized him coming across the
- 19:41Speaker 1: field horizontally on those short crosses, and he's gone. They
- 19:47Speaker 1: have to figure out within their offensive way to really
- 19:50Speaker 1: unlock him. I think that's the hardest thing about the
- 19:53Speaker 1: play call. It is not only do you have this
- 19:55Speaker 1: secret the series of plays that you like, but you
- 19:58Speaker 1: have to kind of tailor it to some of the
- 20:00Speaker 1: personnel that you have, and you have to be able
- 20:02Speaker 1: to put them in the right spots to run the
- 20:04Speaker 1: routes that are best for them while also staying within
- 20:07Speaker 1: the framework of what you want to do offensively.
- 20:09Speaker 2: Yeah, and I'll say this that Bears team is not talented.
- 20:13Speaker 2: I mean they are ten players away from being ten
- 20:18Speaker 2: players away. I mean they have a lot. They have
- 20:20Speaker 2: not a lot going on there. They're not good on
- 20:22Speaker 2: the offensive line, they're not good on the defensive line.
- 20:24Speaker 2: DJ Moore's a stud like he's that that's their guy.
- 20:28Speaker 2: But I mean, this is not a quarterback away. You know,
- 20:31Speaker 2: obviously they're going to be in a position more than
- 20:33Speaker 2: likely with their pick as well as owning the Panthers pick,
- 20:36Speaker 2: they're going to have a chance to, you know, to
- 20:38Speaker 2: go in that direction if they want to move on
- 20:39Speaker 2: from Justin Fieldsman, man, they got they got a major
- 20:41Speaker 2: work to do on this roster.
- 20:43Speaker 1: And I know we're up against a bit, but quickly,
- 20:46Speaker 1: is there anything This is me asking you without even
- 20:48Speaker 1: knowing what the draft class looks like yet, Yeah, you
- 20:51Speaker 1: talk about them not being a quarterback away? Is there
- 20:54Speaker 1: any way that you could use those two picks on
- 20:57Speaker 1: something that's a market position that's not a quarterback? Can
- 21:00Speaker 1: you use it on the front?
- 21:01Speaker 2: And I think I think one of them have I
- 21:03Speaker 2: think you're going to have to commit. You have to
- 21:05Speaker 2: commit to a quarterback, and I think you're going to
- 21:07Speaker 2: have to take one of them. My thing everybody talks about, oh,
- 21:09Speaker 2: the perfect draft for them is they're going to get
- 21:12Speaker 2: the quarterback and then Marvin Harrison or you know, the quarterback,
- 21:14Speaker 2: and then Fashanu. I'm like, no, no, no, it's the quarterback
- 21:17Speaker 2: and then trade whatever that other pick is. You got
- 21:19Speaker 2: to amass a bunch of picks. That's got to be
- 21:22Speaker 2: a lottery ticket. Hopefully you have two top five picks.
- 21:24Speaker 2: The first one you get the quarterback, the second one
- 21:26Speaker 2: you auction that thing off to the highest bidder. You
- 21:28Speaker 2: need a lot of help.
- 21:29Speaker 1: Okay, we need, we need a Thanksgiving Day trade. Yes,
- 21:33Speaker 1: we need. We need a turkey to become turkey sandwiches.
- 21:36Speaker 1: Do we need to get turkey? Stu? We need to
- 21:39Speaker 1: just we need we just need to keep chopping it
- 21:41Speaker 1: up so it becomes a five day meal as opposed
- 21:44Speaker 1: to just a holiday meal.
- 21:46Speaker 2: All right, let's get one more game in before we
- 21:48Speaker 2: take a quick break. Titans Falcons. How about Will Levis
- 21:52Speaker 2: man nineteen to twenty nine, two thirty eight, four touchdowns. Uh,
- 21:56Speaker 2: I mean he was three of the four touchdowns over
- 21:58Speaker 2: thirty yards. They were home run balls. And I do
- 22:00Speaker 2: want to give us a little bit of credit here
- 22:03Speaker 2: because I believe it was last week where we lobbied
- 22:05Speaker 2: and said, just let Will Levis play, Like, let's let's
- 22:09Speaker 2: go just put him out there and let's see what happens.
- 22:11Speaker 2: We know what Tannehill is. I thought it was with
- 22:15Speaker 2: a little bit that we had had a chance to
- 22:18Speaker 2: see with Malik. I thought, Okay, Malik's that's that's further away.
- 22:22Speaker 2: Will Levis has experience, He's played an NFL offense. He
- 22:25Speaker 2: arrived kind of ready to go. Get him out there
- 22:28Speaker 2: and see what you have. Man, this is a great lesson.
- 22:30Speaker 1: And here's I want to make sure everyone hears me,
- 22:33Speaker 1: because it's not about issuing an apology to Will Levis.
- 22:36Speaker 1: I think sometimes what happens DJ when we do so
- 22:38Speaker 1: many different shows, whether it's podcast or TV shows where
- 22:40Speaker 1: we're talking about Will Levis and we're talking about the draft,
- 22:43Speaker 1: and we're talking about who should be in the top
- 22:45Speaker 1: ten pick and those things, sometimes opinions can make it
- 22:48Speaker 1: where you hate the player. Not I never necessarily hated
- 22:52Speaker 1: Will Loves. I think what it was is you're trying to.
- 22:55Speaker 2: Forget anybody first of all, ever, no, but.
- 22:57Speaker 1: You're trying to figure out fit in the scheme is
- 23:00Speaker 1: the most important thing for most players, but particularly quarterbacks.
- 23:03Speaker 1: And I can say this now, particularly after seeing how
- 23:06Speaker 1: the Tennessee Titans use them. It's the perfect fit for
- 23:09Speaker 1: their scheme. By putting Will Levis in a run heavy
- 23:12Speaker 1: scheme with King Henry behind him. You now have allowed
- 23:15Speaker 1: him to use play action, to use RPOs, to use
- 23:19Speaker 1: things that are in his wheelhouse as opposed to a
- 23:22Speaker 1: will We will have you drop back thirty five times
- 23:24Speaker 1: and do traditional concept reading and those things you saw
- 23:29Speaker 1: how it works, those explosive plays being able to come
- 23:32Speaker 1: in a run heavy offense. I mean we see DeAndre
- 23:34Speaker 1: Hopkins utilized and featured in an offense. Well, yeah, that's
- 23:38Speaker 1: what you want to see. That's why you get a
- 23:39Speaker 1: veteran receiver. Will Levis played really well. And here's the thing.
- 23:44Speaker 1: He left a lot of money on the table. I mean,
- 23:47Speaker 1: like when he learns to utilize to check down and
- 23:49Speaker 1: some of the other things that are available within the concept,
- 23:52Speaker 1: he can become a more efficient player, and his efficiency
- 23:55Speaker 1: will make this offense more effective. But hats off to him,
- 23:58Speaker 1: and I'll say this from a personal standpoint watching him
- 24:00Speaker 1: after the game celebrate with his family. A lot of
- 24:04Speaker 1: times I tell people, like when we're talking about draft picks,
- 24:06Speaker 1: it's kind of like a soap opera, but with real
- 24:09Speaker 1: life characters. I love seeing the joy that he had
- 24:12Speaker 1: and he talked about a dream come true. Man, everybody
- 24:16Speaker 1: wishes for that kind of moment for their kid to
- 24:19Speaker 1: like realize whatever their dream is, to see it come
- 24:22Speaker 1: to fruition. So hass off to him for being able
- 24:24Speaker 1: to live it out in front of his family doing
- 24:26Speaker 1: his regular season debut for the Sennessee Titans. Yeah.
- 24:29Speaker 2: And I didn't, you know, I didn't see the game.
- 24:32Speaker 2: Just watched some of the clips and watch some cutups.
- 24:34Speaker 2: But and I did see in the press clippings afterwards
- 24:37Speaker 2: that I guess they had. They must have booed Milik
- 24:40Speaker 2: Willis when he came on the field, and he addressed
- 24:43Speaker 2: it without being asked about it. He addressed it after
- 24:45Speaker 2: the game and said, hey, that's loved that.
- 24:47Speaker 1: I loved that.
- 24:47Speaker 2: It was a good sign. Yeah, I loved it because
- 24:50Speaker 2: first guy.
- 24:51Speaker 1: The leadership stuff, and see that's also a big part
- 24:53Speaker 1: of the position, huge part of the position, the in tangent.
- 24:57Speaker 1: I loved everything about that. Man, if you're the Tennessee Tes,
- 25:00Speaker 1: you gotta be excited. The trick will be how does
- 25:03Speaker 1: he look next week? They o the people who have
- 25:04Speaker 1: seen him play, how does he keep adjusting to what
- 25:07Speaker 1: people do to adjust to him? But man, nice star
- 25:10Speaker 1: for him.
- 25:11Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean buck, I went back and look at him.
- 25:13Speaker 2: My twelfth player in that draft. So I mean he
- 25:15Speaker 2: slips the second round, he got unfairly punished, you know,
- 25:18Speaker 2: going through that process of my opinion. And and look,
- 25:22Speaker 2: I know we saw the video of him in the
- 25:25Speaker 2: draft and how upset he looked. But man, we've seen
- 25:28Speaker 2: so many guys channel that and use that. And this
- 25:31Speaker 2: is the thing where man, given the choice, I sure
- 25:34Speaker 2: as heck would rather be the top couple of picks
- 25:37Speaker 2: of the second round than to be one of the
- 25:38Speaker 2: bottom picks of the first round. He's going to get
- 25:40Speaker 2: a year earlier to his next contract. And if he plays,
- 25:43Speaker 2: if this is one game, if this is what we're
- 25:45Speaker 2: in for, man, he's going to be thinking his lucky
- 25:48Speaker 2: stars that he fell to the second round because he's
- 25:50Speaker 2: gonna get a heck of a lot more money, a
- 25:51Speaker 2: heck of a lot faster.
- 25:52Speaker 1: And not only that, he went to a good team.
- 25:54Speaker 1: He went to a pretty good.
- 25:54Speaker 2: Team, like a good organization, a good organization with a
- 25:57Speaker 2: good coach.
- 25:58Speaker 1: And yeah, to infrastrate the organization, Ran Carthon, being their
- 26:02Speaker 1: general manager, did make sure that he's protected and he's right.
- 26:05Speaker 1: It's really good to see. And also hass off to
- 26:07Speaker 1: Mike Rabel. Mike Robot didn't get the sense that mcleigh
- 26:09Speaker 1: Willis was going to be the guy. So a year
- 26:12Speaker 1: after taking a quarterback in the third round, they go
- 26:13Speaker 1: back and take one in the second round. YEP, looks
- 26:16Speaker 1: like Mike Mike Rabel might have been right with his
- 26:19Speaker 1: hunches and suspicions.
- 26:20Speaker 2: Uh, take on the Falcons. We thought this was coming
- 26:24Speaker 2: for the last few weeks. Desmond Ritter ends up getting benched.
- 26:27Speaker 2: Heinike comes in there, he goes twelve to twenty one,
- 26:29Speaker 2: one hundred and seventy five yards on a touchdown. But
- 26:31Speaker 2: at least he kind of run around makes some things
- 26:33Speaker 2: happen back there.
- 26:34Speaker 1: Yeah, so desmiond Ritter gets deemed up a little bit,
- 26:37Speaker 1: gets a little concussion protocol, But it might have he
- 26:42Speaker 1: mainly given Arthur Smith an opportunity to put the other
- 26:45Speaker 1: guy in there without having to formally bench Desmond Ritter.
- 26:49Speaker 1: So we'll see what it looks like. But yeah, like Heinick.
- 26:52Speaker 2: I didn't even know about the concussion, so I hadn't
- 26:54Speaker 2: seen that. So that was news to me because I
- 26:56Speaker 2: just was paying attention to the game. I yes side
- 26:57Speaker 2: and saw the get out.
- 26:59Speaker 1: Yeah, he got banged up with what every but hey, DJ,
- 27:01Speaker 1: it's one of those things where we've seen it, like
- 27:03Speaker 1: sometimes we've all been on the teams and so a
- 27:05Speaker 1: guy gets banged up. You ready to go back into
- 27:06Speaker 1: the coach the Oh wait, wait, wait, wait, wait, oh,
- 27:09Speaker 1: let's see what it looks like. Yeah right, yeah, real quick.
- 27:13Speaker 1: And so it might have been that situation. Uh Man,
- 27:17Speaker 1: the Falcons and you're author Smith. It has to be frustrating, because, man,
- 27:20Speaker 1: this is a division that.
- 27:21Speaker 2: Is there for the right, there for him.
- 27:23Speaker 1: Man, you can take you can take the division if
- 27:25Speaker 1: you just get efficient and consistent play from that position.
- 27:29Speaker 1: We'll see how this plays out. But it did open
- 27:31Speaker 1: the door for Tyla Hannick. You did maybe take over
- 27:32Speaker 1: at QB.
- 27:33Speaker 2: One row, no doubt. All right, we're gonna take a
- 27:35Speaker 2: quick break. We'll come back. We'll knock out some more games.
- 27:37Speaker 1: Rare for this, all right, buck.
- 27:43Speaker 2: A battle of the two the top two quarterbacks in
- 27:46Speaker 2: the drafted Bryce Young against CJ. Stroud. It was not
- 27:49Speaker 2: a pretty offensive game. It's a fifteen to thirteen win
- 27:52Speaker 2: for the Panthers. They get their first win of the year.
- 27:55Speaker 2: Bryce twenty two to thirty one, five on a touchdown.
- 27:59Speaker 2: This is a team that wasn't able really to run
- 28:02Speaker 2: the ball much in this game. They had forty four
- 28:04Speaker 2: rushing yards, so there wasn't a lot other than Bryce
- 28:08Speaker 2: and I think what we've said, hey, be patient with him.
- 28:11Speaker 2: There's nothing around him. He's getting better every single week.
- 28:15Speaker 2: And they finally find their way to the winner circle.
- 28:17Speaker 2: They get a game winning field goal as time expired.
- 28:20Speaker 2: Adam Thielen is kind of you know, that's been his guy.
- 28:22Speaker 2: Adam thlan has been somebody that he trusts, and he
- 28:25Speaker 2: has eight grabs in this game.
- 28:26Speaker 1: C J. Stroud.
- 28:27Speaker 2: I mean, there wasn't a lot of offense to go
- 28:29Speaker 2: around one hundred and forty yards. They just couldn't really
- 28:32Speaker 2: get anything going. I mean their defensive front beat up Bryce.
- 28:36Speaker 2: He had six sacks in that game. But you know, look,
- 28:40Speaker 2: I the takeaways to me, there aren't great takeaways from
- 28:43Speaker 2: this game. I think both these teams are in their
- 28:44Speaker 2: kind of infancy of where they're going to be and
- 28:46Speaker 2: what they're going to do. I think the biggest takeaway
- 28:48Speaker 2: from me is that Bryce Young has has shown to
- 28:50Speaker 2: be tough, somebody who always played on the best team,
- 28:53Speaker 2: you know, going back to high school and then at Alabama,
- 28:56Speaker 2: he always had superior players. You don't know how those
- 28:59Speaker 2: guys are going to do when they don't have anything
- 29:01Speaker 2: else around him. And I'll tell you this, he's getting
- 29:03Speaker 2: better and he's competing and he's fighting, which is good
- 29:05Speaker 2: to see.
- 29:05Speaker 1: Yeah, he's fighting. So he has the right stuff when
- 29:07Speaker 1: it comes to the makeup, and everyone who knows him
- 29:11Speaker 1: has been around him since, is that he was made
- 29:12Speaker 1: of the right stuff. The way he carries himself, the
- 29:14Speaker 1: way he cared himself at Alabama and before that, the
- 29:16Speaker 1: way he cared himself in modern day high school. Our
- 29:19Speaker 1: way what you like about this? Thomas Brown takes over
- 29:22Speaker 1: as a play caller, and it was pretty clear that
- 29:24Speaker 1: he was going to make it about the players. And
- 29:26Speaker 1: it's funny you pointed out Adam Thielen being his guy DJ.
- 29:30Speaker 1: One of the reasons why we've talked about this on
- 29:32Speaker 1: the podcast, when you have a young quarterback, I want
- 29:35Speaker 1: to pay him with a veteran receiver. You've always said
- 29:39Speaker 1: that because one of the things that happens with young
- 29:42Speaker 1: quarterbacks is they're being asked to throw the ball to
- 29:44Speaker 1: the spots before people get open, and they've never really
- 29:48Speaker 1: done that in their life. They've never just thrown it
- 29:50Speaker 1: and say oh, I'm a trust it. Well, when you
- 29:52Speaker 1: have veteran receivers, they're going to get to the spot.
- 29:55Speaker 1: They're gonna be consistent, reliable, dependable when it comes to hey, man,
- 29:59Speaker 1: you can throw it in here, I'm gonna be there.
- 30:01Speaker 1: We saw Josh Allen game improved with Stefan Diggs. We've
- 30:04Speaker 1: seen others improve. We saw Dak Prescott have success when
- 30:07Speaker 1: Amari Cooper came over. There is something about that old
- 30:10Speaker 1: veteran receiver that allows a young quarterback to mature. We
- 30:14Speaker 1: saw Adam Thielen really really helped Brice Young have a
- 30:17Speaker 1: lot of success. Uh this weekend, I'll.
- 30:19Speaker 2: Use an analogy that'll that'll show our age, Buck is
- 30:23Speaker 2: that it's like when we were growing up, there was
- 30:27Speaker 2: not you know, you didn't really have the cell phones.
- 30:29Speaker 2: You didn't have there was no not even map Quest
- 30:31Speaker 2: at that point in time. So when you remember when
- 30:34Speaker 2: you got your license and it was like like for
- 30:36Speaker 2: me growing up out here in San Diego, it's like, hey,
- 30:39Speaker 2: we're gonna go to the beach. You get your four friends,
- 30:41Speaker 2: you pile on the car, like all right, who's been
- 30:43Speaker 2: who knows.
- 30:43Speaker 1: How to go?
- 30:44Speaker 2: Who knows how to get knows how to get us there,
- 30:45Speaker 2: like nobody, like you got to have one person in
- 30:47Speaker 2: the car that has been to where we're going or
- 30:50Speaker 2: else where. You know, I don't know, it's the roups.
- 30:52Speaker 2: I think you take a left to get I think that, yeah,
- 30:54Speaker 2: off the and then yeah. So in other words, Adam
- 30:57Speaker 2: Thielen's been to the beach, so he can kind of
- 30:59Speaker 2: guide him where he needs to go to.
- 31:01Speaker 1: Yeah, it helps, It helps, and that old Savay receiver
- 31:04Speaker 1: can kind of nurture the young quarterback good Win. Great.
- 31:07Speaker 1: Great job for Thomas Brown, I would say even a
- 31:10Speaker 1: better move for Frank Wright showing enough humility to hand
- 31:13Speaker 1: the play sheet over to somebody else. Hey, you know
- 31:16Speaker 1: the quarterback, you run a quarterback. I'll do a better
- 31:18Speaker 1: job of managing the team. And it helped this team
- 31:20Speaker 1: get their first one.
- 31:21Speaker 2: All right, biggest surprise of the week Broncos. They beat
- 31:24Speaker 2: the Chiefs twenty four to nine.
- 31:26Speaker 1: Mark so many surprises in this game. One you couldn't
- 31:31Speaker 1: have told me that a team a defense that had
- 31:34Speaker 1: seventy hug up on them with then be able to
- 31:36Speaker 1: hold a kin see the Chiefs single digits, Like never
- 31:39Speaker 1: would imagine that. I never would have thought that Pat
- 31:41Speaker 1: Mahons would have had struggles against this Broncos defense where
- 31:44Speaker 1: he turns the ball over a couple of times through
- 31:46Speaker 1: the air, never gets this offense going. And then I
- 31:50Speaker 1: went defensively, they played well enough to be able to
- 31:52Speaker 1: get it done. I mean there were no numbers on
- 31:55Speaker 1: the Broncos side that suggested, oh, they were able to dominate.
- 31:58Speaker 1: We saw Russell Wilson make a handful of plays, but
- 31:59Speaker 1: nothing like that. This can't see the Chiefs offense. What
- 32:03Speaker 1: we've talked about is a they're playing complimentary ball. It's
- 32:05Speaker 1: a little different. This is the first time though that
- 32:08Speaker 1: it caught up with them. They don't have the explosive element,
- 32:11Speaker 1: and DJ in this league is so hard to win
- 32:14Speaker 1: without explosive plays.
- 32:15Speaker 2: Yeah, no, they and you know Kelsey has fifty eight yards.
- 32:19Speaker 2: You don't let you don't get hit with the right hand,
- 32:20Speaker 2: as we say every week, don't get hit with the
- 32:23Speaker 2: right hand. They didn't get hit with the right hand.
- 32:25Speaker 2: The left hand couldn't do anything to them. So I
- 32:27Speaker 2: mean that's going to be the challenge. That's why, you know,
- 32:29Speaker 2: I'm curious to see kind of how this Chiefs team
- 32:33Speaker 2: kind of figures it out. Andy's so smart, Mahomes is
- 32:36Speaker 2: so good. The defense is you know, is still it's
- 32:39Speaker 2: a really good defense. They're going to kind of figure
- 32:41Speaker 2: their way out to the winner circle. I think they're
- 32:43Speaker 2: a team in my opinion. I think they're still built
- 32:46Speaker 2: to pile up a bunch of wins in the regular season.
- 32:48Speaker 2: My question is when you get into the postseason and
- 32:51Speaker 2: then at that point in time you're going to see
- 32:52Speaker 2: the Cincinnatis, You're going to see the Buffalos. You know,
- 32:55Speaker 2: you're gonna see the Miamis. Are they going to have
- 32:57Speaker 2: enough like are they gonna have enough firepower for those teams?
- 33:01Speaker 2: You know, that's my that's my one concern there with
- 33:03Speaker 2: the Chiefs.
- 33:04Speaker 1: That is a huge concern. And it'd be the first
- 33:06Speaker 1: time to Steve Spegnulo for the Chiefs. His unit would
- 33:09Speaker 1: be counted on the cantle. They got to count and
- 33:12Speaker 1: so he has always been able to play real aggressive,
- 33:16Speaker 1: opportunistic defense where it doesn't matter we give up a couple,
- 33:18Speaker 1: we're playing for the big play. It changes now when
- 33:21Speaker 1: you have an offense that's not as explosive because now
- 33:24Speaker 1: you've got to get stops, you have to get three
- 33:25Speaker 1: and outs. It's a completely different shift. They've been good
- 33:29Speaker 1: enough to this point, but can they be a team
- 33:32Speaker 1: that finishes defensively out of holding teams in nineteen points
- 33:36Speaker 1: of fewer because your offense can only generate twenty three
- 33:39Speaker 1: twenty four points each week. That is something that has
- 33:42Speaker 1: never been the culture in Kansas City in the Andy
- 33:46Speaker 1: Reid era. This would be him being way outside of
- 33:49Speaker 1: his comfort zone if they have to go win games
- 33:52Speaker 1: like this.
- 33:53Speaker 2: Yeah, and the numbers weren't, you know, sexy for Russell Wilson,
- 33:55Speaker 2: but he did enough twelve to nineteen hundred and fourteen
- 33:58Speaker 2: yards and then obviously the three touchdowns were huge. And
- 34:01Speaker 2: then you look on the defensive side of the ball,
- 34:03Speaker 2: Baron Browning, who's always in our and when we're talking
- 34:05Speaker 2: about get off numbers, he's always up there amongst the leaders.
- 34:09Speaker 2: He's got excellent quickness and burst. You know, somebody who's
- 34:11Speaker 2: played off the ball can also rush off the edge.
- 34:14Speaker 2: Was pretty a versatile guy coming out of college and
- 34:16Speaker 2: he's really developed into a good player. So two sacks
- 34:19Speaker 2: and a force fumble for him. A great win for
- 34:22Speaker 2: the Broncos over the Chiefs out there in Denver. All right,
- 34:25Speaker 2: next game, this was one that was ugly but yet beautiful.
- 34:30Speaker 2: It was the Jets and the Giants in a driving rainstorm.
- 34:34Speaker 2: It is a game that the Jets had no business
- 34:37Speaker 2: winning with where the game was at the end. They
- 34:40Speaker 2: end up winning thirteen to ten, and it was a
- 34:43Speaker 2: struggle all day long for offense for both teams. Tyra
- 34:46Speaker 2: Taylor gets knocked out, so you've got the Giants who
- 34:49Speaker 2: were playing with their third quarterback. The Jets lose two
- 34:52Speaker 2: centers in this game, so they're playing with their third center.
- 34:55Speaker 2: They've got, you know, obviously Vera Tucker's gone for the year,
- 34:58Speaker 2: Tipman's out, Dwayne Brown not playing, The Giants are missing
- 35:01Speaker 2: offensive lineman. There was so many things working against offense
- 35:04Speaker 2: in this game and two good defenses, so it's a
- 35:07Speaker 2: slog until the end. The Jets end up getting a miracle.
- 35:10Speaker 2: The Giants missed the field goal. They have what twenty
- 35:12Speaker 2: somethings seconds left at the end of the game, twenty
- 35:15Speaker 2: four seconds left, and then Zach hits a big throw
- 35:19Speaker 2: happens to get an off side penalty on Thibodau, which
- 35:21Speaker 2: was the key to the game because you get the
- 35:22Speaker 2: big chunk play and the clock stops, you don't have
- 35:25Speaker 2: a time out. Then he hits another one where he
- 35:27Speaker 2: escapes pressure and they end up getting in field goal
- 35:30Speaker 2: range to senate overtime. I'll start with this question. In
- 35:33Speaker 2: a game in a monsoon where you've got your third
- 35:35Speaker 2: string quarterback, the questionable thing to me, the Giants won
- 35:39Speaker 2: the toss, don't you go on defense and try and
- 35:43Speaker 2: get a stop and then we just need a field
- 35:45Speaker 2: goal then the game's over.
- 35:48Speaker 1: Yeah, it would appear to be that thing sometimes, you know,
- 35:52Speaker 1: DJ sometimes, like in the NFL. Is so different because
- 35:55Speaker 1: in the NFL, a lot of times offensive guys like
- 35:57Speaker 1: to take the ball for whatever reason, they like.
- 36:00Speaker 2: To quarterback in a monsoon, I know, with the ball.
- 36:03Speaker 1: Yeah, But normally, man, if you operate under dispremise, hey,
- 36:06Speaker 1: we're going to defer. In KFC, we're always going to
- 36:09Speaker 1: kick from the clock. That's a high school team, right
- 36:11Speaker 1: because you want the clock at the end. But for
- 36:14Speaker 1: this team, like I mean, yeah, like it in the monsoon,
- 36:18Speaker 1: the elements and the conditions that both teams were playing
- 36:20Speaker 1: with in terms of injury situation, man, why do not
- 36:23Speaker 1: kick it to them? Take advantage of Hey, they go
- 36:26Speaker 1: through and out, we get a shorter field. If we score,
- 36:27Speaker 1: we win. Game over, like why not take that approach?
- 36:30Speaker 1: So it it didn't work out for them, but it's
- 36:32Speaker 1: one of those things, another thing that would be second
- 36:34Speaker 1: guests for a long time in New York.
- 36:37Speaker 2: I won't go along on this front because I actually
- 36:39Speaker 2: did a little like five minute video. It's on Instagram
- 36:41Speaker 2: and to move the Sticks. You can find it on
- 36:42Speaker 2: there on this Zach Wilson thing, because fuck, you know,
- 36:47Speaker 2: there's a balance. I actually people replied to that video
- 36:50Speaker 2: and said, oh, or Lavsky said something similar. So I
- 36:52Speaker 2: actually called Dan and I'm like, dude, I mean, it's
- 36:55Speaker 2: crazy to me how much criticism this kid takes. And
- 36:57Speaker 2: we both said the same thing. We're not looking to
- 36:59Speaker 2: put him in the Hall of Fame. But you had
- 37:02Speaker 2: a team with a great defense at years past and
- 37:04Speaker 2: you've said, man, if we just had a game manager,
- 37:07Speaker 2: just don't turn the ball over. Well that's what he's doing.
- 37:10Speaker 2: He's turned He had one pick in the last five games,
- 37:13Speaker 2: and be like, oh, he fumbled twice in this game.
- 37:15Speaker 1: We had.
- 37:15Speaker 2: One of those fumbles was under center with his third
- 37:17Speaker 2: center who was on the practice squad as a guard
- 37:20Speaker 2: who's now forced into action in a monsoon, So he
- 37:23Speaker 2: fumbled a snap. Okay, he had a sack fumble early
- 37:26Speaker 2: in the game. I'll put that on him. He should
- 37:28Speaker 2: have held onto that ball. That's one fumble on a
- 37:30Speaker 2: day where the Giants had negative nine passing yards. He
- 37:33Speaker 2: throws for two forty, makes two big throws at the
- 37:36Speaker 2: end to set up the field goal. They had several
- 37:38Speaker 2: drop passes. He got pressured twenty five times in this game, Buck,
- 37:43Speaker 2: I mean, well, to be expected. You've got Dexter Lawrence
- 37:46Speaker 2: working against your third stringth center.
- 37:48Speaker 1: Like, I don't know.
- 37:49Speaker 2: I just thought he showed some toughness, some grit. He
- 37:52Speaker 2: hung in there and he gave that team a chance
- 37:54Speaker 2: to win. And I think he's gotten better, you know.
- 37:56Speaker 2: And I don't think people want to hear that he's
- 37:58Speaker 2: an easy target to crush and hate on. I think
- 38:01Speaker 2: there's got to be some balance between saying, Okay, maybe
- 38:04Speaker 2: the second pick. You know, he hasn't been that obviously,
- 38:07Speaker 2: but man, let's acknowledge the kid is tough and he's
- 38:10Speaker 2: getting better. I think that's fair.
- 38:12Speaker 1: DJ. Do you believe that Zach Wilson makes the strides
- 38:15Speaker 1: that he's made this year without Aaron Rodgers being in
- 38:18Speaker 1: the field. No, So I think that was huge thing. Yeah,
- 38:21Speaker 1: so Aaron Rodgers being able to teach him how to play,
- 38:24Speaker 1: being willing to teach him and not throwing or whatever.
- 38:28Speaker 1: But I would say game management situation understands situational awareness.
- 38:33Speaker 1: Do we think that maybe he executes their horror account
- 38:36Speaker 1: without Aaron Rodgers being in his ear telling them, hey man,
- 38:39Speaker 1: this might be a chance for us to after big
- 38:42Speaker 1: play to get him like so, to me, Aaron Rodgers
- 38:46Speaker 1: has been worth his weight in goal despite not really
- 38:49Speaker 1: playing for them. He has given Zach Wilson a lot
- 38:54Speaker 1: of insight in wisdom that has made him a better player.
- 38:58Speaker 1: The toughness that he's displayed, the consistency that he's displayed
- 39:01Speaker 1: in terms of just running the offense. I love all
- 39:04Speaker 1: of that, and so he deserves a lot of credit
- 39:06Speaker 1: for that. I also can't understand why Robert Salad is
- 39:09Speaker 1: firmly in Zach Wilson's corner because if this works out,
- 39:13Speaker 1: what he does take the baton from Aaron Rodgers this year.
- 39:18Speaker 1: Having Aaron Rodgers in the building could help him. I'm
- 39:21Speaker 1: not saying he's going to be a great player. We
- 39:23Speaker 1: can certainly help him be a very very good player
- 39:25Speaker 1: for them in time.
- 39:26Speaker 2: Yep, I agree with you. So again, there's a longer
- 39:29Speaker 2: video on that if you want to check it out.
- 39:30Speaker 2: We've got time for one more game here, Seahawks, Browns Seahawks.
- 39:35Speaker 2: They end up coming back. They beat the Browns twenty
- 39:37Speaker 2: four to twenty. Gino a couple of touchdowns, couple picks.
- 39:41Speaker 2: Kenneth Walker eight for sixty six on the ground, Sharbone
- 39:44Speaker 2: fifty three yards rushing, Tyler Lockett eighty one yards and
- 39:48Speaker 2: a touchdown in JSN. Who I believe was your selection
- 39:51Speaker 2: this week was did you pick him in the rookie
- 39:52Speaker 2: draft this week?
- 39:53Speaker 1: I think I might have been. I think I might
- 39:54Speaker 1: have gone off to grow.
- 39:55Speaker 2: I might have picked He got a game winning, game
- 39:57Speaker 2: winning nine yard TD. I did not see that game.
- 40:00Speaker 1: So I think what's telling about this game is Geno
- 40:04Speaker 1: Smith says, Look, this team goes as I go, and
- 40:06Speaker 1: I have to understand and take ownership. My play really
- 40:08Speaker 1: determines whether we win or lose. I got to play better,
- 40:11Speaker 1: and so in spite of the turnovers and those things,
- 40:13Speaker 1: when they needed him to come through and make plays,
- 40:15Speaker 1: he made plays. This is a team that still wants
- 40:18Speaker 1: to be a run oriented team. They weren't able to
- 40:20Speaker 1: run the ball to their liking, but they had over
- 40:22Speaker 1: one hundred yards. They were able to kind of set
- 40:24Speaker 1: up some things by being able to play action and
- 40:26Speaker 1: push the ball down the field, and they got the dub.
- 40:29Speaker 1: On the other side with the Cleveland Browns being Browns,
- 40:31Speaker 1: runs for one hundred and fifty five yards. But the
- 40:34Speaker 1: reason why they lose quarterback had three turnovers. Can't turn
- 40:38Speaker 1: the ball over. Can't turn the ball over. And I
- 40:40Speaker 1: know everyone and their mom they probly know Deshaun Watson
- 40:43Speaker 1: is saying, Oh, they're better off with PJ. Walk whatever.
- 40:46Speaker 1: What we saw yesterday is, look, that's PJ. Walker's still
- 40:49Speaker 1: like he's not going to be able to be a
- 40:51Speaker 1: high end quarterback game after game after game. Deshaun Watson
- 40:54Speaker 1: hasn't played like that in Cleveland. But at some point,
- 40:58Speaker 1: what you're hoping is that he is going to be
- 41:00Speaker 1: a guy that is not just the manager that you're
- 41:02Speaker 1: not winning in spite of that. Eventually you winning because
- 41:05Speaker 1: of he has to hold up his end of the obligation.
- 41:08Speaker 1: Right now with his injuries or whatever, he hasn't been
- 41:11Speaker 1: able to. But you saw what the Browns are like
- 41:14Speaker 1: without a franchise quarterback. They need to get to Sean
- 41:16Speaker 1: Watson in the building and playing, and then they also
- 41:20Speaker 1: need to get him playing well so they can kind
- 41:21Speaker 1: of realize their potential as a team.
- 41:23Speaker 2: Yeah, I just think when you're in the AFC right now,
- 41:25Speaker 2: you don't have one of those superstars you can get
- 41:28Speaker 2: to the playoffs. And when we just came up, you know,
- 41:30Speaker 2: talking about the Jets and what they're trying to do.
- 41:32Speaker 2: If the Jets are gonna do anything, they're gonna need
- 41:33Speaker 2: Aaron Rodgers to miraculously come back at the end of
- 41:36Speaker 2: the year to try and get through this gauntlet. And
- 41:38Speaker 2: that with the Browns, they're gonna need the young in
- 41:42Speaker 2: his prime, great Deshaun Watson, if they're gonna make a run,
- 41:46Speaker 2: because you're not getting through Burrow, Mahomes, Josh Allen, You're
- 41:49Speaker 2: not getting through all those guys. You know, Trevor Lawrence
- 41:52Speaker 2: obviously belongs in that discussion. And I know that's a
- 41:54Speaker 2: defensive laden team, but you know, the Jags find their
- 41:56Speaker 2: way into a shootout. Buck if their defense cracks, the
- 42:00Speaker 2: quarterback can win a shootout. You got to have a
- 42:02Speaker 2: quarterback it's going to be able to Maybe it's only
- 42:04Speaker 2: one game in the playoffs in the AFC. Maybe it's
- 42:06Speaker 2: just one time, but you better have that club in
- 42:08Speaker 2: your bag. Is kind of what I'm getting at.
- 42:10Speaker 1: Is the only way you can do it into AFC.
- 42:13Speaker 1: It's quarterback play, yes, quarterback playing pass for better have
- 42:16Speaker 1: an a level quarterback because it's going to come down
- 42:18Speaker 1: to a duel the seven teams and make the tournament.
- 42:21Speaker 1: We can pretty much guarantee that each of those guys
- 42:24Speaker 1: going to have a franchise, a marquee quarterback. So you've
- 42:26Speaker 1: got to be able to if you don't have one, man,
- 42:28Speaker 1: you go into the gunfight with a butter Knight. YEP.
- 42:31Speaker 2: A good way to end it right there. It's a
- 42:32Speaker 2: good way to put it.
- 42:33Speaker 1: Man.
- 42:34Speaker 2: We normally touch on the rest of the games briefly.
- 42:36Speaker 2: We don't have time to do that today. We will
- 42:37Speaker 2: get into some of these other games and these other
- 42:39Speaker 2: teams again throughout the week. We have five episodes a week,
- 42:43Speaker 2: so Monday through Friday, including the video show, which you
- 42:46Speaker 2: can catch on Tuesday. That is four pm Pacific every Tuesday.
- 42:50Speaker 2: That's on the NFL Fast Channel. But anyways, that's going
- 42:53Speaker 2: to do it for us today. I appreciate you guys
- 42:54Speaker 2: hanging with us, and we'll see you next time. Right
- 42:56Speaker 2: here on, move the sticks.
- 43:00Speaker 1: To Tetfortunity before
