- 0:00There's this tiny sliver of what I call the tech elite, and they
- 0:04infinitely brag about how well their kids are doing away from
- 0:08screens that they won't fall for this hype.
- 0:11Oh, that's what kids do today. They say I'm protecting my kids
- 0:15from screens and look how well my kids have done.
- 0:18And then there's almost like everyone else that isn't Privy
- 0:22to that information, and my job is to bring that forward.
- 0:28This is Virtuous Leaders, the podcast for based Catholics who
- 0:31will speak truth, do good or die trying.
- 0:35Here's the show. You are a PhD level psychologist
- 0:40and you got some training at Harvard Medical School.
- 0:42You've spoken about the dangers of screen use at at the
- 0:46California State legislature and then also similarly to the
- 0:50American Psychological Association and you've written
- 0:53two books about it. My first question is why do we
- 0:57need to write books about this? Isn't it just so obvious?
- 1:03It it's not I think we just look at the data and childhood is
- 1:08disappearing like the typical kid has now by the time that
- 1:13they're a teen has now left the real world behind to sit before
- 1:17a screen said largely sedentary for 8 hours more than 8 hours
- 1:21and 30 minutes every single day like and and they've left family
- 1:26behind. They've left school behind.
- 1:28They've left an interest in books behind.
- 1:31They live amidst in a in darkened rooms talking with
- 1:37strangers rather than connecting with their families.
- 1:39They are, they've been deceived by a lot of the, the major
- 1:48voices within our country talking about the health effects
- 1:53of kids and technology have aligned often times financially
- 1:57with industry. They essentially act as PR
- 1:59rather than they, they betrayed childhood, they betrayed our
- 2:04families and educators and healthcare, other healthcare
- 2:07providers to just, they've aligned with industry to sort of
- 2:10bless this movement because they, they're, they're
- 2:13oftentimes paid to do so, but they've blessed this movement on
- 2:172 screens. And so kids are suffering.
- 2:20That's what motivates me to write about this and talk with
- 2:23families about it. Well, at least unlike most
- 2:27issues, rich people and poor people are facing the same
- 2:30struggle here, right? Yes, and I think we see those
- 2:38who are There's this tiny sliver, as I talked about in in
- 2:44Better Than Real Life. There's this tiny sliver of what
- 2:46I call the tech elite, and they infinitely brag about how well
- 2:52their kids are doing away from screens that they won't fall for
- 2:56this hype that that, oh, that's what kids do today.
- 3:00There's they say, I'm protecting my kids from screens and look
- 3:05how well my kids have done. And then there's almost like
- 3:10sort of everyone else that isn't Privy to that information.
- 3:14And my job is to bring that forward.
- 3:17And we see black and Latino youth really get hammered by
- 3:23this stuff. Well, I was talking about that 8
- 3:25hours and 30 minutes for the average teenager in in the US
- 3:31for black and Latino youth, it's it's about 10 hours every single
- 3:34day in front of a sedentary screen.
- 3:36Those kids are suffering more with respect to screen caused
- 3:42child obesity. So American healthcare needs to
- 3:48step up and recognize that they they've been deceived by a lot
- 3:53of people saying, oh, screen time's not really all that
- 3:56important. That's a lie.
- 3:58American healthcare has a responsibility to look at the
- 4:03actual science saying screen time is a contributor to child
- 4:06obesity and to type 2 diet and then it's all its consequences
- 4:10of type 2 diabetes and they need to step up.
- 4:14So because less advantage families are getting it but just
- 4:17or getting it worse. But like, I would say, unless
- 4:21you are the point OO 1% of families, not including my own,
- 4:27that like are able to send their kids to schools that are
- 4:31largely, you know, based around human connection.
- 4:35That's where the kind of rich are sending their kids to
- 4:38school, like to these schools based around not around screens
- 4:41and and instead around the human connection.
- 4:44So there is some on, yes, all sort of folks are affected, but
- 4:50there is like this little strata of of of folks that sort of at
- 4:54least their kids are, are more protected than than than than
- 4:57others. Regarding the black and Latino
- 5:01kids, I've seen that first hand. It's been a couple summers
- 5:03volunteering in the Bronx. And contrary to popular
- 5:06expectation, what you find is these kids spend all their time
- 5:11at home in front of screens, not roaming around outside getting
- 5:15in trouble, which might actually be better for them.
- 5:17And it turns them into these weak, flabby, purposeless
- 5:21automatons, which is is really sad to see.
- 5:25But you, you mentioned that. So these top tech executives
- 5:29sending their children to these human oriented schools, when,
- 5:35when do you think is the earth is going to open up under their
- 5:38feet and swallow them whole? Like what do you mean?
- 5:43Like do they are they able to sleep at night and knowing what
- 5:49they are doing to other kids while they protect their own?
- 5:53Yeah, that's, that's a better way of putting it.
- 5:54Yeah, that's what I was thinking.
- 5:58I, I can't live my life like that and I I truly don't know
- 6:05how they can. And then they talk all so again,
- 6:09they're just and they're, they're so out of touch.
- 6:13I think money that that level of money puts you in this.
- 6:19I I think it disconnects you from the reality.
- 6:22And they and when they talk, so many of these people talk like
- 6:25it. It's so it's tone tone deaf.
- 6:27It's, it's so out of touch with, with what everyone else is, is
- 6:34dealing with. And, and I, I don't know, I
- 6:36think there's this cognitive dissonance that like, you know,
- 6:39like, and I think back in there like, wow, you know, all this
- 6:43money is allowing me to protect my kids and send them to these
- 6:46special schools and provide them these extracurricular activities
- 6:49and purchase the, the get these nannies that are 100K plus a
- 6:54year that are protecting my kids and that, that allows me to less
- 7:01consider what's happening to everyone else.
- 7:02Meanwhile, you know, I'm, I'm, I'm selling myself.
- 7:05I tell my PR agent to tell the world about all the the
- 7:11wonderful things I'm doing, you know myself, and the world gets
- 7:14suckered in by that. Must be nice not to have a
- 7:17conscience. So your latest book Better than
- 7:20Real Life. Can you give us the top most
- 7:23important takeaways from that book?
- 7:25I think it's it's it's really too where the but like if I was
- 7:30going to sort of like took me a long time to write that book,
- 7:33but it's we are telling families today, oh, play a video game, go
- 7:41socially connect, go watch TV, which is YouTube and and TikTok.
- 7:49These are not that they're sold to to families as entertainment,
- 7:54but silicon. What Silicon Valley knows very
- 7:57well is that it's not entertainment based.
- 7:59It is it is a science, manipulative science that kids
- 8:03are logging onto called persuasive design that
- 8:06essentially the world has not ever heard heard about.
- 8:11And my job is to and that is a science in which machines are
- 8:15designed to manipulate humans to change their behavior using the
- 8:19highest levels of psychology. So it's the Silicon Valley
- 8:23merger with the highest levels of psychology, neuroscience, AI
- 8:27to purposely manipulate kids with the idea that we're going
- 8:30to shift childhood. The main goal of it to shift
- 8:33childhood away from the real world, to put it on a screen.
- 8:37And, and I think the second large big picture innovation is
- 8:42to really bring forward that these people that you're told to
- 8:47trust these the, the, the four leading child health
- 8:52organizations in the United States that that give you advice
- 8:56about screen time or industry aligned and typically industry
- 9:00or often industry funded. And they essentially act as PR
- 9:03that are just blessing this industry.
- 9:06They, they've sold out childhood, they've betrayed
- 9:09families, they've betrayed kids. And they're just saying, oh,
- 9:12screen time's not such a problem.
- 9:14They've essentially enabled industry to take childhood for
- 9:17its own. And that's not OK.
- 9:18We need to lead with what science actually tells us our
- 9:22kids need. And that's things like, you
- 9:26know, I, I know you focus on, on traditional values and so forth.
- 9:30There is a reason why traditional cultures since the
- 9:33beginning of time have emphasized things like family,
- 9:36whether our kids are teen teens or preteens or little kids,
- 9:41they're #1 most important emotional connection should be
- 9:45with family, not online peers and strangers.
- 9:48So that's, it's, it's really talk like sort of really
- 9:53definitely saying like, let's take a look at the reason why
- 9:58these cultures have long promoted the importance of
- 10:01family is because that's what science says works.
- 10:03And that's what's going to help our kids going forward.
- 10:06So I, I work to bring the science and you know what?
- 10:09Lo and behold, what do you know these traditional cultures for
- 10:13for 1000 plus years are actually right.
- 10:17And what Silicon Valley is selling you as a parent now is
- 10:22is a lie. What are those 4 organizations
- 10:26you mentioned that are betraying our trust?
- 10:29Number one, the American Academy of Pediatrics, which is really
- 10:32sad to say, the American Academy of Pediatrics is a a science
- 10:37based really good organization. But in 2016 their Media Group,
- 10:43the ones that provide media recommendations, essentially
- 10:48became industry aligned. The main person at the American
- 10:52Academy of Pediatrics to give the world advice about kids and
- 10:58screens is doctor Megan Moreno, whose research has been funded
- 11:02by Facebook, Instagram. You can't do that.
- 11:06That's like having McDonald's and and Coca-Cola fund dietary
- 11:10guidelines. The second one is the American
- 11:14Psychological Association. They are, they say they're a
- 11:17Health Organization for saying, oh, social media is not really a
- 11:20problem. But they are also a professional
- 11:23organization working to place psychologists within the social
- 11:27media industry. So they literally can't say, you
- 11:30know, oh, this, this product, the social media product poses
- 11:33risk because it would be unethical for psychologists to,
- 11:37to work there. So that's their industry
- 11:39alignment. The a real big one, number three
- 11:41is common sense media, this group that parents think of oh,
- 11:45that's a rating organization. They have changed.
- 11:49Do they have they are now primarily an Ed and a multi
- 11:54$1,000,000 Ed tech put screens in schools tech and schools
- 11:59lobbying group and they say things like screen time isn't is
- 12:04not really a problem even though their CEO and and founder Jim
- 12:11Styer talks he brags about how he limited his own kids screen
- 12:15time very much part of the tech elite.
- 12:18And lastly Michael Rich's digital Wellness lab based out
- 12:23of Children's Hospital he is is is like describing better than
- 12:27real life. His funding sources look like a
- 12:30Las Vegas electronics trade show.
- 12:34Just everyone or just like like all these companies that parents
- 12:38are sort of concerned about are funding him like Roblox like and
- 12:42then he says like, well, like screen time's not really a
- 12:45problem. Like you're getting funded and,
- 12:47and all, a lot of these organizations say we are
- 12:50independent, but apparently that they have no recourse or
- 12:54apparently they that they must not have a legal department.
- 12:57That's like like awake to realize, like when you say we're
- 13:03your independent and when you say things like like the
- 13:06American Academy of Pediatrics, their science based side will
- 13:10say screen time is a risk factor for obesity.
- 13:13Meantime, the media side says it's not really like that.
- 13:17You were opening yourself up. Do you know what the costs are
- 13:21to treat child obesity and teen obesity in the United States?
- 13:26It's billions and billions of dollars.
- 13:28Apparently the American Academy of Pediatrics, there's no like
- 13:31legal department that is aware of what they are doing because
- 13:34they're putting themselves at risk like innocent.
- 13:37And that's one thing for them, but they are throwing American
- 13:40children under the, and worldwide, they're throwing kids
- 13:43under the bus and putting them at risk for early disease and
- 13:47early death. It's it's a mess.
- 13:50That is so disturbing. I had no idea about the common
- 13:53sense media. It's, it's a tragedy and parents
- 13:56don't know this. And you know, common sense media
- 13:59is brought into schools to educate kids.
- 14:04It essentially acts like a Trojan horse marketing program.
- 14:08We're going to, we're there to help you.
- 14:10Like no, they get there and then like their 7th grade program for
- 14:15kids and social media is, is like promoting kids social media
- 14:20use and 7th graders are oftentimes 12 years old.
- 14:23They're actually like they're not legally allowed to be on
- 14:26most social media sites. That is a sham of an
- 14:32organization that is, is essentially there to their
- 14:36economic model is to put kids before screens.
- 14:39Meanwhile, they're saying they're an independent body.
- 14:41Again, they must not have a a legal department that's awake or
- 14:44they really care. Just when you think you can't,
- 14:47it can't get any worse. And I thought, I thought I was
- 14:49as black billed as he could be. And you keep getting these
- 14:53little surprises. And then you said that.
- 14:55And so is it. Is it true that some of the most
- 14:59effectively trained psychologists are using their
- 15:02training to get kids more addicted through persuasive
- 15:05design? Yes, you see that in the video
- 15:08game and social media industry that like why in God's name or,
- 15:14or psychologists employed by industry what?
- 15:18Well, because they're their primary job is to secretly often
- 15:23times manipulate behavior. And you will and to see how
- 15:28social media has like social media has been turned into what
- 15:32I call a super normal technology.
- 15:36Super normal stimuli was invented by or or discovered by
- 15:39Nicholas Hindberg and a Dutch biologist who won the Nobel
- 15:42Prize for it. But like, oh, we're sold to you
- 15:46as we're selling social media to you.
- 15:48Is that's the place where your kids connect.
- 15:50No, it's a scientific experiment on kids where you charted in a
- 15:55super normal stimuli. As you take you, you hype it up,
- 16:00you Jack it up, it becomes artificial and it and it does
- 16:03two things that creates an addictive response and it
- 16:06displaces real world engagement. So we see that with social
- 16:11media, the the some of their early experiments where you take
- 16:15these little songbirds and you paint these giant eggs, they
- 16:20glow blue and put polka dots on them.
- 16:22These little songbirds will ignore their real eggs, let them
- 16:26die to like hop on these giant plastic eggs because it's going
- 16:29right at their genes. So you for especially for our
- 16:33girls who are really have an innate ability to socially
- 16:40connect, industry is going to exploit that by creating a super
- 16:44normal stimuli. They're going to quantify those
- 16:47social connections. They're going to put numbers on
- 16:50likes and followers and and photo tags and and they're going
- 16:54to gamify that. It becomes a contest of who can
- 16:57do that. And if you don't have the
- 16:59appropriate number of likes and followers and photo tags and so
- 17:03forth, you were ridiculed by your peers.
- 17:06It is a toxic environment that purposefully created and
- 17:09psychologists are brought into the social media industry to all
- 17:13make that work much better, to create a product that is much
- 17:17better at pulling kids away from vital real world to live
- 17:22sedentary on screens. It's profoundly unethical.
- 17:25With the American Psychological Association is doing it.
- 17:28It makes me sick. I've LED a national campaign to
- 17:31have the APA address this. I, I compare it to the last
- 17:37scene of the Raiders of the Lost Ark.
- 17:39Like how did they respond? The last scene of the Raiders of
- 17:41the Lost Ark, They're, they're Wheeling the Ark of the Covenant
- 17:46into the this, this labyrinthian warehouse, never to be seen
- 17:50again. And they just essentially buried
- 17:52this national. Campaign that was in the New
- 18:00York Times and lots of other places, but the APA just
- 18:02essentially, like I said, oh, we're going to push that off to
- 18:05a committee. They've turned their back on, on
- 18:06kids. It's it's troubling, it's
- 18:10sickening. It's just really it's we're in a
- 18:12really toxic environment right now where Healthcare is is
- 18:18aiding and abetting Silicon Valley's exploitation of kids.
- 18:25Any highlights you want to point out for your previous book Wire
- 18:28Child? Wire child is really talking
- 18:31about the the myths that are putting our kids before screens
- 18:38industries really selling us on this on on these beliefs that
- 18:41for example video games develop your kids self-control.
- 18:45The research shows the opposite when your kids like what what
- 18:49that research shows is like if your kids on a video and they'll
- 18:53play a video game longer, but like the real research.
- 18:56If kids spend a lot of time on a video games, they're not going
- 18:59to perform as well in school. Like where the where they need
- 19:03the real self-control or another one is is as our kids transition
- 19:10from being a child to a preteen to A to a teen.
- 19:13You'll hear so many parents today be convinced of the lie
- 19:18that what Oh my kid needs their peers the most and today those
- 19:23are they're found online in this environment.
- 19:26So I need to turn my kid loose to this background where they
- 19:30predictably get sad and depressed and it's been a in a
- 19:35generation of girls cut and become suicidal.
- 19:39Yes, because of some of the content that's there greatly
- 19:44because of they are leaving behind the the families, the the
- 19:49parents, the extended family, the siblings that love them and
- 19:53and have their their love their that, you know, have their
- 19:57unconditional love where kids then go chase this conditional
- 20:00love of peers. It's again, that's a really
- 20:04there's lots of myths that are the the industry has again sort
- 20:09of had their minions, their handmaidens that claim that
- 20:16their health bodies convince. The world that this is what
- 20:19you're supposed to do so we've had this giant transition since
- 20:23the early 2000s of blessing this world that kids live before
- 20:29screens and it's and you'll see it from experts and you'll and
- 20:34unfortunately a lot of healthcare providers have been
- 20:37duped by that too. I'll have pediatricians like
- 20:43after a talk, I'll do like say, oh, but what about this?
- 20:46And they will be referencing common sense media, not an
- 20:49understanding that common sense media takes millions of dollars
- 20:52from industry and their job is to put kids before screens.
- 20:55It's even these. Even our health experts don't
- 21:00know the truth today. I've been speaking on this topic
- 21:05for several years, including nationally.
- 21:08And what I what I've come to realize is my hypothesis, and I
- 21:11want to test it with you, is that most parents are not even
- 21:16capable of doing what is good for their kids by not giving
- 21:22them smartphones, social media, video games, because most
- 21:26parents are most adults are just children in adult bodies and
- 21:30they don't themselves have the self-control and maturity and
- 21:33the emotional regulation that's moms are anxious, dads are weak
- 21:39and it's like they're not even capable of doing what's right
- 21:42for their kids. You've spoken about this topic
- 21:44as well. What's your impression?
- 21:47I would go more with I, I don't think we should.
- 21:53I don't think this should be put singularly on parents because if
- 21:56it is on parents, the only ones that are going to be able to do
- 22:01that, and I don't know is is we moved is persuasive design.
- 22:04This manipulative science incorporates more AI and we have
- 22:10the world's most powerful computers that take buildings
- 22:14and weigh hundreds and thousands of tons go after kids.
- 22:18I don't even think this tech elite group are going to be able
- 22:20to protect their kids. So I think it's to me, it's like
- 22:24smoking. I think all these institute, I
- 22:26think it can't be just put on parents to me, just like we
- 22:30realized like we can't just have parents protect their kids from
- 22:36smoking cigarettes. It needs to be schools, it needs
- 22:40to be government. It needs to so you see states
- 22:43now taking action and country saying we want to push back the
- 22:47age when kids get social media. Like to me, that's what needs to
- 22:51happen. Parents need support Today.
- 22:54Parents are working like more and more and more hours.
- 22:58And then they're sold this, this delicious, easy message that
- 23:03what your kid needs most is a screen.
- 23:05They're they're being lied to by the American Academy of
- 23:08Pediatrics and Common sense Media, these big giant voices.
- 23:12So I think parents are being duped.
- 23:14I think we need to start, we need to shut that those lies
- 23:18down and means to provide all parents, not just this small
- 23:23sliver of tech elite, like real information.
- 23:28You've spoken widely on this topic.
- 23:29What advice do you have some to someone who wants to help
- 23:33parents, wants to help people by speaking on this topic.
- 23:36How do you, you know, getting, getting a appointment set up and
- 23:39that sort of thing? I, I, I think the power of
- 23:44coming together as, as a community, we've lived in these
- 23:48small communities for forever. And if and if some group tried
- 23:53to like of interlopers, like tried to move in on your kids
- 23:58and your tribe, they'd be lucky to be to, to be run off like
- 24:02good luck to them today. We need to wake up to realize
- 24:07like there are these powerful groups that are working to
- 24:11exploit kids and the, and the way to do that is to the way we
- 24:16can protect kids is, is to really come together in groups
- 24:21and faith-based communities and other places where we're going
- 24:25to, you know, we're not going to follow this Silicon Valley
- 24:29model. And we're, we know actually that
- 24:31the people at the very top of it are protecting their kids.
- 24:33We're going to follow that path. We're going to work together to
- 24:36protect our kids. We're going to make a community
- 24:40to protect our kids. We're going to do things like
- 24:42push back the age when kids get smartphones, which is happening
- 24:46earlier and earlier and wreaking havoc on our kids physically,
- 24:52emotionally, academically. We're going to say like no our
- 24:56in our group, like I don't understand why.
- 25:01I think I would like to see more action from faith-based
- 25:05communities and other community groups to say like no, but I I
- 25:12think they've been Co opted or taken in by this really
- 25:15powerful, what I call the Silicon Valley propaganda
- 25:18machine. This this giant set of industry
- 25:21funded lies. So I would like and then is is
- 25:25your asking like let's let's look to science.
- 25:29I know you know, Melanie Hempy, it's screen strong, like let's
- 25:33go there and, and their organization is a they're not
- 25:38taking money from big tech and they are science based and
- 25:42they're working hard to bring that information forward.
- 25:45Like let's, let's go to them and see what they what, what what
- 25:49they say is is really helpful. They have a community there
- 25:53where parents can come together from around the nation and say
- 25:56how can we take action to to protect our kids and push back?
- 26:00Do things like push back the age when kids get smartphones and
- 26:03start playing video games and things of that sort.
- 26:07Last question, where are you getting your motivation from?
- 26:10Is it faith or where's it coming from?
- 26:16Really good question. I am a psychologist in clinical
- 26:18practice and I and I work in a My community has a lot of
- 26:28working class families everyday hard working, amazing families.
- 26:34They are the ones who are really really getting hurt by this.
- 26:37And so I see them everyday and my clinical practice saying why.
- 26:42Why is my son putting a fist through a wall when I ask him to
- 26:46He's failing every single one of his classes.
- 26:49I've tried to limit his video games.
- 26:51Why did he put a fist through the wall?
- 26:53Why did I need to call the police?
- 26:54Because he's 200 lbs and my 17 year old pushed me like they
- 26:58don't know why this is happening.
- 27:00Why did I lose my my, my, my kid like so that to see that and
- 27:07then to see what I call the tech elite tout how their kids are
- 27:11thriving emotionally and academically because they have
- 27:16not fallen for the Silicon Valley line to put kids before
- 27:20screens to see that that disconnect is is driven me to
- 27:24to, to, to write and to bring this message forward.
- 27:30I actually worked with someone exactly like you you described
- 27:34and I had no idea how to help this person.
- 27:38It's, it's really tough. I mean, what we really want to
- 27:41do is, is, is if we're talking about families, we're kids when
- 27:47we, we have, whenever there's a medical situation in it and it's
- 27:51pervasive and we have a like a, a country of kids suffering from
- 27:55child obesity, We shouldn't focus on primarily on treatment.
- 27:59Yes, if kids are having a problem, what we need to do is,
- 28:02is primary prevention and the American Academy of Pediatrics
- 28:05is it just completely given up on that completely been taken in
- 28:10by their Media Group, which forgets about prevention.
- 28:13It's, it's, it's tragic and it, you know, so that we're going to
- 28:17say that the Media Group in the American Academy of Pediatrics
- 28:20says screen time is not really a problem.
- 28:22Meanwhile, they're off the offices of pediatricians are
- 28:25filling up with kids that are are suffering and are likely to
- 28:32experience early death and type. They're experiencing type 2
- 28:35diabetes because they are living on a screen being shoved
- 28:39marketing to watch stuff. And they aren't moving out of
- 28:43their beds because, oh, because the Media Group has said screen
- 28:46time isn't really a problem. Like you can't do that kind of
- 28:50stuff. So that these kind of things
- 28:52just to see what my families that I work with and the
- 28:57families around the world not being told the truth and truly
- 29:01being lied to, to their face, that like drives me to do this.
- 29:05And so we really need to focus on on prevention because once
- 29:09it's really hard to treat a kid, once they're game addicted, we
- 29:13can send them to centers, We can send them to places like that.
- 29:17Or if when we try to think a girl's smartphone away and she
- 29:21cuts up her arms like that's happening around the country,
- 29:24let's, why don't we understand that that smartphone and social
- 29:27media was what led to this problem in the 1st place?
- 29:31And let's push back the age when kids get that.
- 29:36Was an excellent conversation Doctor Fried.
- 29:37Any last words for us? Really appreciate you being on
- 29:43here. It's a it's really nice talking
- 29:45with you and it sounds like you understand so much of what is
- 29:49happening. And I'm, I'm, I'm thank you very
- 29:52much for bringing this message forward.
- 29:54And also seems like you're very much working talk with others
- 30:00who are then going to disseminate this message out
- 30:02there further. And, and I think that that is
- 30:06that that's where that's this grassroots, what are we doing in
- 30:11our community? Like I think that's where things
- 30:14are are really going to move. Thank you.
- 30:20Thanks for listening. Please like, subscribe and share
- 30:23with your friends. See you next time.
