- 0:07On Friday, October 7th, 1977, the Los Angeles Dodgers faced the Philadelphia Phillies at
- 0:12Veterans Stadium for Game 3 of the 1977 NLCS. Los Angeles bounced back in Game 2 with a
- 0:187-1 victory over the Phillies, tying the series at one game apiece. The series headed to
- 0:23Philadelphia for Game 3 at Veterans Stadium. This audio recording is from the radio broadcast
- 0:28featuring announcers Ralph Keiner and Jerry Coleman.
- 0:58Right hand batter and the next pitch is popped up into a shallow center field. Moving up
- 1:02in the ball is Gary Maddux, an outstanding center fielder, and he makes the play. And
- 1:07the interesting thing about that is that Maddux running to that ball was not limping. He missed
- 1:11the first games of the series because of an injury to his knee. So Maddux is not limping.
- 1:16Apparently he is all right and they can certainly use his speed. The Lopes flies out to center
- 1:22field. That'll bring up Bill Russell, who's had two hits and nine times up so far in the
- 1:26series. Russell a right hand batter. And Christensen with his first delivery. It's too low for a
- 1:35ball. Christensen won his first major league game against the New York Mets. At that time
- 1:40was a different pitcher than he is now. He took a lot of time on the net now and now he
- 1:43works very quickly. He comes back with a fastball. It's fouled back out of play. Lopes for the
- 1:48283. Bill Russell at 278. Russell with four home runs. 51 runs batted in. And now the
- 1:56next delivery and it's lying right at the second baseman. Haken by Ted Sizemore. Two
- 2:02men away. Well, Turner, have you noticed how so often with young pitchers who delay their
- 2:07pitching on the mound that one of the standard procedures is to try to get them to speed it
- 2:12up and it seems to help a lot of them. Really has helped Christensen. He had a record of
- 2:1619 and six and he certainly has speeded up his delivery. Now the batter coming up is
- 2:20Reggie Smith. He's two for eight in the series. Reggie with a fine here hitting 307 with 32
- 2:25home runs. 87 RBI. He takes a called strike. Christensen had a record of no wins and two
- 2:33losses against the Dodgers this year and the next delivery is grounded foul. Took something
- 2:37off the pitch. A good change up and Smith out in front grounding the ball off to the
- 2:41right side. And the first game of the season series with the Phillies and Dodgers, Christensen
- 2:48was really jumped on by the Dodgers and was a losing pitcher. Pitch high a fastball. They
- 2:54knocked him out of the box with seven runs on seven hits after one and two thirds in
- 2:58the Reggie Smith and Ron Say had back to back homers in the first inning to get things going
- 3:02against Christensen. That was back on May the sixth. Now a slow change up. It is just
- 3:07out of the strike zone and the count at two balls and two strikes. Smith has a reputation
- 3:13around the league of having trouble with off speed pitching but not much. So Christensen
- 3:18tall in the mound and his next delivery to Smith. It is hung on a net, a fastball and
- 3:23Reggie Smith has struck out a one, two, three inning for Larry Christensen and the score
- 3:28at the end of one half inning hits the Dodgers. Nothing in the Phillies coming up. Well this
- 3:34is a pivotal game for both teams of course. They are tied up one and if you lose this
- 3:39game you really have your back to the wall. There is no tomorrow. You have to win on the
- 3:43following day. So both these teams know this very well. I like Dodgers Stadium where the
- 3:47first two games were played. The ball carries very well at Veterans Stadium. The ground
- 3:52balls move quickly on the astroturf and a lot of the Phillies players hit the ball on
- 3:56the ground quite a bit so that should help them a little bit. It will also be sharply
- 4:00cooler and it is sharply cooler in front of all of you as was mentioned overcast. Every
- 4:04so often a little bit of sunshine will come through. The temperature will stay around
- 4:0960 throughout most of the ball game. A wicked cross body block by Kansas City's Hal McRae
- 4:15sparked the New York Yankees to rally behind the pitching of Ryan Didri on Thursday night
- 4:19and even the American League Championship series at a game apiece with a 6-2 win over
- 4:22the Royals. The American League series moving back to the artificial turf in Kansas City
- 4:26on Friday with a good chance of rain tonight.
- 4:33This broadcast presented by authority of Major League Baseball is intended solely for the
- 4:37private, non-commercial use of our audience. Any publication, reproduction, retransmission
- 4:42or other use of the description on account of this game without the express written consent
- 4:46of Major League Baseball is prohibited. Here at Veterans Stadium we might mention that
- 4:51there is a wet strip behind the shortstop and in front of the left fielder running about
- 4:56150 feet long and maybe 40 feet wide. If the ball is hit there it may be a factor. The
- 5:02ground gets very slippery in those wet areas. There are some wet sections in right field
- 5:06but the infield is completely dry and the action continues now with Bert Hooten on the
- 5:11mound and Ralph Keiner to call it for you. And the Philadelphia Philly partisan crowd
- 5:15starting to whoop it up. There's a difference in the crowd. Dodgers send in the crowd more
- 5:19to date. They do cheer when their home team comes through. The two Grand Slam home runs
- 5:23hit by the Dodgers were certainly received by the fans with as much enthusiasm and applause
- 5:30of any group of people gathered together. But here you'll find the Philadelphia Philly
- 5:35fans keep it up constantly. It's a noisy, noisy stadium. Veterans Stadium that seats
- 5:39over 58,000. Bert Hooten with a record of 12-7. 0-2 against the Dodgers. 2.62 ERA. Born
- 5:47in Greenville, Texas. Was in All-America at the University of Texas. As a pitcher he throws
- 5:52a knuckle curve and he developed that while trying to learn how to throw a knuckleball.
- 5:58He never could master the knuckleball and ended up with a knuckle curve which reacts
- 6:01a little bit like a knuckleball. It breaks down and sometimes it breaks down and in and
- 6:06sometimes down and out. Very tough pitch to hit and especially if it's kept low. Hooten
- 6:11had 153 strikeouts in the regular season and he starts his windup and the first pitch is
- 6:15chopped out to the mound. It is taken by Hooten right on top of the mound and McGride who
- 6:19had been 4-9 in the series has thrown out. Knuckle curve and bounce and Hooten now looking
- 6:25up and he had some trouble with the sun on that ground ball. Shades of Billy Low, Ralph
- 6:29Keiner. That sun is low in the sky and when that bounced at him you can see him fighting
- 6:34the sun. It was a one hopper. You go back to the old Brooklyn Dodger days of Billy Low
- 6:38who complained he lost the ground ball and the sun. Nobody would believe him but he can
- 6:42be done if the ball is chopped high enough and we're on artificial turf and now we're
- 6:45going to have time called as Ron Say goes to the sunglasses. We have sun here at Philadelphia
- 6:49breaking through the overcast. Field dimensions are 330 down each line. 371 in left center
- 6:54field and right center field. 408 in center field and the fence 12 feet high. Artificial
- 7:00turf and it's fast. Throw one man away and one pitch and Larry Bowe the batter. Larry
- 7:05is switch hitter batting from the left hand side. McGride hit 316 in the regular season.
- 7:10Bowe hits 280 and the first pitch is taking a called strike. The ball popping out of the
- 7:14glove of Bill Yeager. Steve Garvey at first base. David Lopes at second base. The short
- 7:19stop Bill Russell. Third baseman Ron Say. In the outfield and left field Dusty Baker.
- 7:24Rick Mundy in center field and Reggie Smith in right and oh a bunch of ball and is hit
- 7:28by the ball but he's hit while in the batter's box so he is not out and they're checking
- 7:34out to see whether or not it was in the box or not but no argument on the play so evidence
- 7:39Steve Yeager is satisfied that the call was right. Bowe has that exceptional speed. The
- 7:46infield has to shorten up on him. And now Hootin into the wind up and the pitch back
- 7:51is hit hard but right at Bill Russell the short stop as he moves to his left he comes
- 7:55up with the ball and the throw to first base for the out. Two men up and two men down.
- 7:59That will bring up the big favorite here in Philadelphia. It's Mike Smith. Smith hits
- 8:0338 home runs in the course of the season. 101 RBI has had an average of 274. So far in
- 8:09the series he's won for nine. Prior to this year Smith led the national league in home
- 8:14runs three consecutive years. The year before this year he led the major leagues with 38.
- 8:19George Foster the leading hitter in home runs in the major leagues with 52 this year. Also
- 8:24in runs batted him with 149. So Smith in the batter's box and here's Hootin's wind
- 8:31up and pitch. And he misses with a fastball all in inside. Lifetime Hootin has won nine
- 8:37and lost eleven to the Philadelphia Phillies. Last year he had a record of eleven and fifteen
- 8:42with a 3.25 ERA. And now the pitch back has popped up. A high pop up in the shallow center
- 8:49field backtracking as David Oakes is back into the shallow outfield area in center and
- 8:54he makes the catch and the Phillies go down in order. And the score at the end of one
- 8:59of the series is the Phillies nothing and the Dodgers nothing. More about that American
- 9:04League game that was played the second game of the series on Thursday. We mentioned before
- 9:09a wicked cross body block by KC's Hal McRae got the Yankees really up. They went on to
- 9:14win that ball game behind Ron Gidrey 62. Squib Johnson the D.H. obtained in a midseason
- 9:19waiver deal from the Houston Astros tied up the game at 1-1 with a mammoth home run in
- 9:23the fifth inning. It was Johnson again the sixth flashing a line drive into left field
- 9:28with a 2-2 tie and triggered a three way three run rally. Veteran Stadium at Philadelphia
- 9:34a place where baseball has taken over and part of the growing demand for tickets here
- 9:40at Veteran Stadium forced them to take a big part of the scoreboard down. They had two
- 9:44huge scoreboards in center field. One has been removed. They used to have the ball and strikes
- 9:48and other features on it and some of the color that they would perform during the game. And
- 9:52now they have the single scoreboard in right center field. But that opened up a few thousand
- 9:56seats in dead center for the fans who poured in here to the tune of 2,700,000 an all time
- 10:02Philadelphia record and that record only exceeded by the 2,955,000 by the Los Angeles Dodgers.
- 10:09So to talk about baseball fever in Los Angeles and Philadelphia the folks here in town know
- 10:14all about it. We might mention too watching young Larry Christensen in that first inning
- 10:18only 23 years old looked like a total professional got his balls over in the right place and
- 10:23one of the things Ralph Hanna that struck me when I looked at Larry Christensen and
- 10:27blinked I thought it was Don Larson out there. A no wind up right hander about the same size
- 10:32with that good fastball and good breaking curve. Don Larson the only man to pitch a perfect
- 10:37game in World Series history and the only man to pitch a no hitter as a matter of fact.
- 10:41And he did it while pitching for the Yankees against the Dodgers. So Larry Christensen now
- 10:48taking his warm up pitches for the Phillies. Richie Ebner at first base the second baseman
- 10:54Jed Sizemore shortstop Larry Vos third baseman Mike Schmidt in left field Greg Luzinski in
- 10:58center field Gary Manix and Mike McBride at right. The catcher Bob Boone and Christensen
- 11:03now has completed his warm up pitches. First two games of this series drew 111,944 55,968
- 11:11in the first game and five more in the second. And we've got an outstanding crowd here again
- 11:17today. Shadow has extended now from home plate out to just about the front edge of the pitcher's
- 11:22mound still an advantage for the pitcher. And the first batter will be Ron Say and the
- 11:28first pitch to the Penguin is called a strike. Say is three for seven with a grand slam home
- 11:36run in this series the first man to do it in National League playoff history. They batted
- 11:43two forty one in the regular season with 30 home runs 110 RBI. He takes another called
- 11:48strike. So Christensen out in front and as Jerry pointed out he's in good command right
- 11:52now. And the right hander pitch a slider just outside and the count of one and two. Christensen
- 11:58is not what you would call a strikeout pitcher in the regular season he had 118 and 219 innings.
- 12:06And the right hander with that short windup the pitch back to the plate is a fastball
- 12:09just inside down around the knees. The count of two balls and two strikes he won 15 of his
- 12:14last 16 decisions and won his last seven straight. Finished with a close of 15 and a 16. And at
- 12:23two to the pitch to say hit hard to Mike Smith the human vacuum cleaner at third base and
- 12:27he picked it up and throws the first base for the out. So forward a roll for Larry Christensen
- 12:35and the batter coming up will be Steve Garvey Garvey three for seven so far in the series
- 12:40with one run battered in the regular season. Steve batted two ninety seven with 33 home
- 12:45runs at the new Dodger record for a team playing in Los Angeles. He also drove in 115. Garvey
- 12:53closed strongly hitting in 15 of his last 19 ballgames about four fifty one over that
- 12:57period. He looks at the call. Christensen at Veterans Stadium has a record of 10 and
- 13:05two for this year. Of course the Phillies are tough to beat no matter whether Jerry Kuhlman
- 13:11would be on the mound in this ballpark. They've got some record Ralph no question about that.
- 13:16They have a record of 16 wins and 21 losses and they lost their first five. Now a fifth
- 13:22grounded foul and they counted strike two. They batted two ninety five here in the stadium
- 13:28and it is a hitters ballpark at home run Haven. Philadelphia led the National League in team
- 13:38batting average at two seventy nine. So Garvey with a two strike count against Steven Christensen
- 13:48into the lineup. Here's the pitch a line drive to center a base hit the first one of the
- 13:51ballgame. So Garvey gets his fourth hit in eight times up and that'll bring up Dusty
- 13:57Baker who was the hero of the Dodger win two days ago in Dodger Stadium with a grand slam
- 14:02home run Baker two for seven in the series with four runs batted in. Baker batted two
- 14:13ninety one in the regular season with 30 home runs and eighty six runs batted in and some
- 14:18drama put on by Dusty Baker the last game of the season. There's a Pittsburgh all strike
- 14:24three other Dodgers have hit three 30 home runs or more in the regular season. No team
- 14:29had ever had four players to do so. Baker took until his last time up the last day of
- 14:34the season to hit his 30th to make it an all time record. Fastball foul back out of play.
- 14:39So it's a two strike count and Christensen out in front all the way through the early
- 14:44part of this ballgame. Made 35 starts in the regular season did not appear in relief and
- 14:55the right hander leans in looking for the signs from his catcher Bob Boone. Garvey bluffs
- 15:01the running and Christensen sees he make a move towards second and backs off the pitching
- 15:05rubber. Now he sets up again. Garvey might have been going stopped just at the last second
- 15:09when he saw Christensen was not going to move. Now the pitch and it's hit to left center
- 15:14field a long fly ball could be extra bases it will be extra bases it's off the wall.
- 15:18Garvey goes to third the ball bobbled by Maddox off of the wall. Garvey's team waved in the
- 15:22throw by the infielder to the plate it's not in time and Garvey scores although the plate
- 15:27was blocked by Boone and Boone disagrees with the call by umpire Harry Wendell staff. Ball
- 15:33bobbled off the wall and Steve Garvey a former football player crashing into Boone at home
- 15:40plate. There's no question Ralph that when Gary Maddox bobbled the ball and he might
- 15:45be just a little bit nervous you've got to remember this is his first game in championship
- 15:49play and when that ball got away from him Garvey who just made it in under the gun of
- 15:54the throw by Larry Bowe on the relay would have been an easy out had he tried it otherwise.
- 16:00He got in I guess under the tag it was a very close play Garvey was going to hold up at
- 16:05second he was not sure that ball was going to be off of the wall and he almost fell down
- 16:09as he stumbled around second. So the Dodgers have drawn first blood as Baker gets a run
- 16:14battered in his fifth in the series he is the leader so far in the series in RBI's and
- 16:18now the batter will be Rick Bundy. Bundy won for four in the series a left hand batter
- 16:22and here's the pitch is swung on a miss. Maddox is considered to be the best fielding center
- 16:30fielder in the national league but he bobbled that ball off of the wall just momentarily
- 16:39enough to allow Garvey to be called safe at home and it was a tough call at home and here's
- 16:45the pitch back a change up in the count one ball and one strike. Bundy batted 229 in the
- 16:56regular season with 15 home runs and he hits a high fly ball to center field Maddox backpedaling
- 17:01is under tagging up a second as Baker Maddox makes the catch Baker does not go as Maddox
- 17:06fires over the third the throw was off line but it carried all the way to in front of
- 17:12Mike Smith where it was cut out by Larry Ball Ballers sort of the plate to Boone was a good
- 17:17throw and Boone had the plate blocked and on the replay on television it looked like he
- 17:22actually did have it blocked but sometimes the angle is off. So now two men away a runner
- 17:28still at second base and the batter will be the catcher Steve Yeager. Yeager won for seven
- 17:32in this series batted 256 in the regular season with 16 home runs and 55 RBI's his best year.
- 17:39He is an outstanding defensive catcher Dodgers leading 1-0 and Christensen whirls around and
- 17:47moves the runner Baker back to second base no one covering Sizemore had made a move to
- 17:52the bag but then stopped. So Christensen looks in again goes to the set position this time
- 17:59Sizemore over by the bag no throw the pitch the plate line to right center fielder base
- 18:03hit going over to field of this McBride coming in the score as Baker and the Dodgers lead
- 18:08something as they jump to the early lead. Good base hit by Steve Yeager coming with two men
- 18:14out in front of the pitcher you don't often see batter get a good hit in that spot because
- 18:20the pitchers usually are extremely careful but a good two out base hit in front of the
- 18:24pitcher Bird Hooten and Hooten is a 164 hitter. Christensen had command of his pitches very
- 18:31well in the first inning and to the first batter on the second here but he's been getting
- 18:34up and they're starting to take their toll Garvey single a Baker double a long fly by
- 18:39Monday and then a single by Yeager on a curve ball and hung in his eyes. Hooten is a right
- 18:44hand batter and Christensen working to him with his first pitch and gets a strike with
- 18:48a slider over the outside corner. I think you're going to hear a lot of comment and see a lot
- 18:52of pictures on the call at home plate on Steve Garvey. It'll be discussed especially here
- 18:59in Philadelphia there's one down the left field line it's extra bases. Yeager going
- 19:03around second on the third. Luzinski waste board. Grafted with a bare hand a throw now
- 19:07into Smith and here comes Yeager trying to score and this time Yeager is out. Yeager
- 19:13did not like the call. Loeb after restraining he grabs him around the shoulder pushes him
- 19:18away from home plate on fire. Harry Wendelstad. Relay coming into Mike Smith the third baseman
- 19:25and his throw to the plate in time for the out. Now Steve Garvey is talking to Wendelstad
- 19:31takes his position moving out to first base. So two controversial calls at home plate for
- 19:36Harry Wendelstad in the inning two runs on four hits one man left and the score at the
- 19:41end of one and a half innings it's the Dodgers two and the Phillies nothing. Ray Floyd
- 19:45struggle off a death threat a mutual challenge of Serino Ballesteros Friday to reach the
- 19:5036 hole final of the $225,000 world match play golf championships at Virginia Water
- 19:56England. Floyd accompanied by two police officers in the final holes of the semifinal match
- 20:00and his opponent two and one now will compete for the $52,500 first prize Saturday with
- 20:07Australian Graham Marsh who slammed his U.S. manufacturer Hale Irwin seven and six. Organizers
- 20:13said they provided Floyd with protection following a telephone death threat to the 35 U.O. Pro
- 20:19from Fort Bragg North Carolina. Floyd refused to comment that showed no sign of stress as
- 20:24he blazed a blistering birdie trail over Wentworth tree lined 6,969 yard par 73 Burma Road course
- 20:32thus matching 11 birdies and an eagle in 35 holes. Ballesteros who ousted title favorite
- 20:37Tom Watson five and four on Thursday stretch Floyd all the way. Well we had things change
- 20:45here in a hurry Larry Christensen in the first inning sailed through the Dodgers one two
- 20:50three but in the second he started to get his pitches up. He gave up that single to
- 20:54Steve Garvey the double to Dusty Baker the ball bobbled by Maddox Garvey coming around
- 20:59to score. Mundy hit a deep fly to center field then Steve Yeager singled in a run and Burt
- 21:05Hooten doubled down the left field line. Yeager tried to score and this time the relay that
- 21:09went from the left fielder to Mike Schmidt at third to the catcher Bob Boone caught Yeager
- 21:14score again. Yeager did not like the call but as it turns out right now we've gone through
- 21:18an inning and a half and the Dodgers right now on top two to nothing. Moving to the bottom
- 21:22of the second Lazinski Hebner and Maddox as Burt Hooten gets ready and now let's move
- 21:26over to Ralph Keiner. All right Jerry Coleman and the sun a little bit behind the clouds
- 21:30now which will aid the defensive ball players it'll take the glare away. Most of the players
- 21:36still with their sunglasses on in case it becomes glary again Hooten taking his one
- 21:42lead pitches. Took some time to come out to the mound as he was the man that was on base
- 21:48as he hit the double down the left field corner. For the Philadelphia Phillies the lead off
- 21:54batter will be the Bull, Greg Lazinski two for seven in this series a two run home run
- 21:58for two runs batted in. Great favorite here in Philadelphia Lazinski batting three oh nine
- 22:05for the year with thirty nine home runs a hundred thirty runs batted in and the first
- 22:12pitch is a ball. Now ready and the pitch back of Lazinski hit by the third baseman Ron Chay
- 22:21in the left field for a base hit and the Phillies have their first man on all fielded by Baker
- 22:27in left field and brought back in the infield in Philadelphia with a runner first to no
- 22:32one out. That'll bring up Richie Hebner. Hebner is two for five in this series. In the regular
- 22:43season he batted two eighty five with eighteen home runs sixty two runs batted in. Played
- 22:47out as option while with the Pittsburgh Pots and was signed as a free agent by Philadelphia.
- 22:52Moved from third base to first and Hebner a left hand batter a dangerous left hand batter
- 22:56and Hooten's first pitch a curve ball hit right at the second baseman should be two.
- 23:00Loops over to Russell he dropped the ball and the act of throwing. Russell dropped the
- 23:06ball and the act of throwing so the out is affected at second base. He was trying to
- 23:10get it away in a hurry hoping for the double play and fortunately he did have possession
- 23:15of the ball as far as the Dodger fans are concerned. That was a case of the shortstop
- 23:21not bending his back to go after the ball. He stayed straight up and reached down and
- 23:25his arms were about at the extremity and the ball just drifted off as he tried to grab
- 23:29it. You got to get down in and after and go with it. Russell of course had two errors
- 23:33in the first game that allowed four and earned runs and the Phillies won that game by a margin
- 23:39of seven to two. Now the batter will be Gary Mannix batting for the first time in the series
- 23:43he takes the first pitch he calls strike and that's an oddity. Mannix is really a first
- 23:47ball hitter. Right hand batter batting two ninety three for the season and he leans back
- 23:55to the fastball is in under the chin one ball and one strike. Mannix had fourteen home runs
- 24:01seventy four runs batted in did not play in the first two games because of an injury to
- 24:05a knee. And Burt Hooten from the stretch and the pitch back is swung on a miss and the
- 24:09knuckle curve ball it's one and two. Hooten is throwing well he finished up the year well
- 24:14he won his last three decisions one of them a one nothing shut out. He's called happy
- 24:19by Tom Lasota because he doesn't look that way. And at one to the pitch the Manic swung
- 24:27on a miss. Good fastball his first strikeout and that'll bring up Bob Boone Boone one for
- 24:33four in the series. Boone had two eighty four in the regular year with eleven home runs
- 24:46and sixty seven RBI's a right hand batter. The son of Ray Boone a major league ball player
- 24:51and a good one. Ron Reid throwing in the bullpen for the Phillies earlier Brewster warm Brewster
- 24:56had been throwing. And here's the pitch that is outside a slider missing one ball no strikes.
- 25:02Boone batting seventh in the batting order so the bullpen is activated in case Danny
- 25:06Ozark the manager wants to go to a pinch hitter the Dodgers leading two nothing. And the pitch
- 25:11back at the knees a called strike. One ball one strike. Hooten working quickly shortly
- 25:21the first base by Richie Hebner and the pitch to Boone is lobbed in the left center of base
- 25:25hit. Coming over Monday a fielded out one hot. Hebner goes to second base and holds there.
- 25:30So now the Phillies have runners at first and second with two men out of Nevada coming
- 25:34up at 10. Well the first two games of the series a lot of hitting. And the first game
- 25:44both sides had nine hits in the second game both sides had nine hits. And out of the in
- 25:54numerology first three games including the Yankee Kansas City game both sides had nine
- 25:59hits. So the first three games of the World Championship series every team had nine hits.
- 26:06And every winning team scored seven runs. And here's the pitch to Ted Sizemore taking
- 26:11low and outside a ball. Sizemore one for seven in this series. About a two eighty one in the
- 26:16regular season with four home runs and forty seven runs batted in. Game time temperature
- 26:21was fifty nine degrees. It's not too bad a day. Hit back to Sizemore a ball and a count
- 26:29at two at all. Winners at first and second base two men out bottom half of the second.
- 26:41Bert Houdon on the mound and the right hander's next pitch is low and it's ball three. Three
- 26:46balls no strikes. Larry Christensen is in the on deck circle he's a good hitting pitcher
- 26:50and three home runs this year with a grand slammer. Be interesting to see if the bases
- 26:58are loaded whether or not they would let Christensen stay in the ball game and there's ball four
- 27:02and Houdon has lost his first batter and walked him on four pitches. Bases are loaded and
- 27:07Christensen is going to bat. He had a grand slam home run earlier. That wasn't counted
- 27:14as an intentional walk but Houdon had to be pitching around Sizemore to go after Christensen
- 27:18even with Christensen's home run. Now Christensen still is a pitcher and he's still got an average
- 27:23of one thirty nine but he has the ability to hit the ball out of the ballpark. He is
- 27:27a big hitter as far as the pitcher's concerned and now Houdon into the wind up. Here's the
- 27:32pitch and he comes in with a knuckle curve. It's a called strike. Big spot on the ball
- 27:37game for the Dodgers and Bert Houdon. Probably one of many as the excitement here is at its
- 27:42peak and now the pitch back a big swing and a miss it's strike two. Christensen is hit
- 27:47six home runs in his major league career. And a two strike. The pitch by Houdon. The knuckle
- 27:55curve ball it's two low. One ball and two strikes. Richie Hebner the runner at third
- 28:01base. Bob Boone at second base. Ed Sizemore at first. There's a Philly's threatened. First
- 28:05threat of the ball game for Philadelphia. Now the pitch and it's rounded foul. Billy
- 28:10Demar is the third base coach for the Phillies. Picks it up. Checks it out and keeps the ball
- 28:15in play as he talks at the bird. Tony Taylor the coach at first base. He's one of the most
- 28:21popular Philadelphia Phillies ever. One ball and two strikes. The signs are out. The wind
- 28:28up and here's the pitch and it's a ball and Bert Houdon was on his way to the dugout.
- 28:34He thought it was strike three. Oh the count now at two and two. It was close. Gary Wendell
- 28:41at the home plate umpire has really been in this ball game. Two calls at home. One going
- 28:48against the Dodgers and one going for the Dodgers. Or vice-versa. And now those he steps
- 28:54off the mound and he is taking some time as he tries to get his composure back. He thought
- 28:59that was strike three and it would have been a big strikeout. Base is loaded. Davey Lopes
- 29:04in the top and Bert Houdon. This is his first championship series. He started his career
- 29:09with a cut and then went to the Dodgers. Now the crowd here warming up and Houdon looks
- 29:18around. Goes into the wind up. Here's the two-two pitch and it's inside. It's ball three.
- 29:23Went to the breaking ball and now a full count of three and two and that's a tough pitch to miss on.
- 29:29Two and two the important pitch. Now the runners will be going with the wind up or possibly
- 29:34Houdon will not wind up. But the runners will be going. So listen to this crowd here. Houdon
- 29:39will work from the set position. They are really trying to get the Bert Houdon. Houdon
- 29:46is going to wind up. Here's the pitch. It is low and ball four and the walk forces it
- 30:05to run. Tommy Lasorda, the manager of the Dodgers, now going out the mound. He wants
- 30:10to calm his pitcher down if he is upset. Houdon certainly thought he had a strikeout. It was
- 30:16called a ball and then he went on to walk the pitcher to force it to run. So the Dodgers
- 30:20lead touch the two-to-one and the batter coming up will be Batesman-Bride. The base is still
- 30:25loaded. Ralph Keiner, I don't know when I have ever seen a crowd get involved in a game
- 30:31as this one has. I know you went through the early days of the amazing New York Mets where
- 30:35they reacted very raucously and loudly there. But I don't think I have ever seen this kind
- 30:40of a situation in a deliberate attempt to upset the pitcher. Well now the Philly fans
- 30:45are really old-time baseball fans. The Phillies go back before the 1900s. Mike Garman is now
- 30:53throwing in the bullpen for the Dodgers and Harry Wendelstad coming out the mound. He
- 30:58wants to get this game going. Phillies in 1950 won the National League Championship.
- 31:05They were beaten in the World Series 4-1. In 1950 they won the National League Championship,
- 31:10lost to the Yankees 4-0. Last year they won the National League Eastern Division Championship
- 31:15and lost to Cincinnati 3-0. And Tom Lacoda now back to the bench and Baker-Bride stepping
- 31:21in. McBride one, make that 4 for 10 in this series. Left hand batter, good speed. Houdon
- 31:27working for the lineup. Here's the pitch and at 2-0 curve ball. Knuckle curve ball just
- 31:32below the base. Rick Rodin is also throwing in the bullpen for the Dodgers. The Dodgers
- 31:38started during the regular season. Dodgers leading 2-1. The Phillies with the bases loaded.
- 31:45Two men after and it's about a half of the second inning. And now Houdon into the lineup.
- 31:50Here's the pitch and again he's long. Again the knuckle curve, two balls, no start. Once
- 32:05again the signs go down and Houdon into the lineup. The 2-0 pitch. It has swung on and
- 32:10fouled back. And that time Houdon coming back with a back wall. It was a pretty good pitch
- 32:14to hit but McBride did not make contact. Not enough to get it going the other way and he
- 32:18fouled it back. Other guy had two balls and one strike. And this crowd trying to intimidate
- 32:25the pitcher, Burt Houdon. And Houdon into the lineup. The next pitch is low and inside it's
- 32:31ball three. Three balls and one strike and now Houdon holds out both hands as to say
- 32:36where was it? Houdon certainly unhappy with Harry Wendell's pass. Don LaForta when he
- 32:42walked back to the bench made a detour near the mound and was talking with Wendell's pass.
- 32:48Now three balls and one strike. The crowd standing up, yelling, screaming, here's the
- 32:52pitch, it's swung on and fouled back again. And again that pitch was a good fastball.
- 32:57Letterhive might have been out of the strike zone. They might be getting to bake McBride
- 33:01now Ralph. Well one thing for sure you can hear it. You can hear it in North Philly, South
- 33:08Philly, maybe even in Camden. And again it's 3-2 this crowd trying to intimidate the pitcher.
- 33:14The runners go and the pitch is ball four and the ball game is tied. Three walks in
- 33:23a row and the ball game tied at 2-2 and Burt Houdon has walked two batters with a base
- 33:28is loaded. This has to be one of the most remarkable circumstances that I have ever
- 33:36seen from a crowd standpoint trying to intimidate the pitcher and it's working. Well you have
- 33:43about 58,000 people in this ball park. I don't know how many are Philadelphia Philly fans
- 33:48but it might be close to 50 and they are making themselves heard. Now the batter coming up
- 33:54is Larry Bore. Bore grounded out his first batter. Left hand batter. And Burt Houdon
- 34:10into the wind up here. It's a 50's high with this. Fastball too high for ball one. Bore
- 34:17now backing out of the batter's box. Now Bore back in. Tough man to pitch to. He has a small
- 34:26track going. And the one hole pitch to Bore is high and outside at ball two. Two balls
- 34:33and no track. Well a veteran under any circumstance has a tough time in the championship playoff
- 34:43but anybody under this circumstance has to be put under tremendous pressure. The next
- 34:47pitch is low. And at ball three. Three balls no track. And the crowd here enjoying the
- 35:00effect that they are having on this ball game. There is no doubt about it. And at three all.
- 35:06Here is the pitch. Houdon gets the ball. And Bore didn't like the call. That was a borderline
- 35:14pitch over the outside corner. It's an ace and Bore was unhappy with the call. That puts
- 35:18it at three balls and one track. And this might have been an easy day for Winnilshad.
- 35:20The next pitch back. Ball four. Bore wants the roll and again Houdon goes with outstretched
- 35:27hands. Where was it? And that is all for Burt Houdon as the Phillies take the lead by a score
- 35:32of three to two. And you have to say that Burt Houdon was certainly unhappy with Harry
- 35:39Winnilshad intimidated by the crowd. And he leaves the ball game giving up three runs
- 35:44so far on just two hits. He walked four and he holds his hands up to Winnilshad as he
- 35:49walks off in guts. Ralph Kiner this has to be one of the most unusual circumstances I've
- 35:59ever seen in a baseball game in my life. A pitch miss as far as Burt Houdon was concerned
- 36:06when Larry Christensen was up there as activated for a successive walk and as for the young
- 36:12right hander from Texas Burt Houdon out of the ball game. And while we're waiting for
- 36:16the relief pitcher Rick Roden to come in here's a brief update from CBS News. Just in from
- 36:24Lexington, Kentucky, Texas roared down the stretch to overtake favorite Cole Comfort
- 36:28today to win the first heat of the $100,000 Kentucky fraternity. That's the final leg
- 36:33of Trotting's Triple Crown with a career best 157.35. That was at the Red Mile. Texas driven
- 36:41by veteran Billy Herman was in eighth place in the 10 horse field down the back stretch
- 36:45before making his move going into the head of the stretch and overtaking Cole Comfort
- 36:49at the wire to win by a length. Cole Comfort, a nine to five Cole favorite in the 85th
- 36:54fraternity, finished second with very with long shot Sloman and Jergy Hanover third and
- 37:00fourth respectively. Now the second heat, the best of three race, is scheduled to go
- 37:04at any moment and we'll have something on that as soon as we get word over the wire.
- 37:08Texas' second choice of the batters at eight to five paid 520, 260, and 240 for his victory.
- 37:14Rick Roden, a tall right hander who at one time suffered from osteomyelitis and has a
- 37:22deformed right leg is coming on the pitch for the Los Angeles Dodgers. Roden taking it
- 37:27up from Bird Hooten during the season. Roden was 16 and 10, a 3.75 earned run average and
- 37:37was a starting pitcher. Roden during the regular season started 31 games and did not come in
- 37:45in relief at any time. He completed fourth. So this in effect is Roden's first chance
- 37:49as a relief pitcher. Roden, a young man out of Florida, had to fight osteomyelitis as
- 37:55a youngster, fought his way back and became the Dodgers' number one draft choice back
- 37:59in June of 1971. So he'll be coming on and he's got himself a lot of trouble. The bases
- 38:05are loaded. Larry Christensen at third base, Blake McBride at second and Larry Boa at first.
- 38:11So let's pause five seconds right now for station identification. This is the CBS Radio
- 38:16Network. This is the American Forces Radio and Television Service.
- 38:21STN, the bell's on.
- 38:24Rick Roden warming up for Bird Hooten in an unprecedented show of a fan reaction, the
- 38:31likes of which I've never seen in baseball. I've seen it in basketball, I've seen it in
- 38:34football, but I have never seen the fans react as they did to Bird Hooten and actually force
- 38:39them out of the ball game. Let's go back to the draft time and it will not stop now. It
- 38:44will be up to Rick Roden to battle the fans and also take on Mike Smith. Smith pops up
- 38:48to second his first time up, batting for the second time, the ninth man to bat in this
- 38:52inning. As the Phillies have taken the lead by a score of three to two. All three runs
- 38:57going on, watch the force in the man from third.
- 39:04And the young Rick Roden with a record of 16-10, looks in for the sign, pass and goes
- 39:09for the windup. And the crowd starts up again, the first pitch is popped up. Playable for
- 39:14the catcher Steve Yeager, he is under it. And he makes the catch and the sign is retired.
- 39:19So one pitch by Roden and the sign retired, something that Bird Hooten could not do. In
- 39:25the inning, three runs score on just two hits. There were four walks, nowhere than three
- 39:31men left on. And the score at the end of two, the Phillies three and the Dodgers two.
- 39:36Here at Veterans Stadium in Philadelphia, we've got quite a ballgame going through two
- 39:42innings, five runs across the plate. If you just missed it, in the second, the Dodgers
- 39:47got on the board with one away Steve Garvey single, Dusty Baker doubled him home. After
- 39:52two down, Yeager hit a single to right field, bringing in Baker and there was quite a play
- 39:56at the plate when Yeager tried to score on Bird Hooten's double. And then on the second
- 40:00inning, a remarkable show by the Philadelphia fans, an unusual display after Lesinski's
- 40:05single, Richie Hebner fourth was in to get second, Maddox struck out. And then with two
- 40:09down, it all began, a single by Boone, Sizemore walked. And then Larry Christensen on what
- 40:15Bird Hooten thought was a strikeout was still alive. He drew a walk for one run, another
- 40:20walk to Bake McBride with a fan's delirious and a following walk to Larry Bowe forcing
- 40:24in the third run. And that was all for Bird Hooten. And I don't know whether to say it
- 40:28was the Dodgers two and the fans three here in Philadelphia, but that's the way it stands.
- 40:32I have to believe, Jerry, that fans have to get credit for something in that circumstance.
- 40:36The Dodgers, very good in their home park, but nothing like the Philadelphia Phillies.
- 40:40The Phillies have won 16, lost 21 here this year. And that's after losing their first
- 40:44five ball games. They had a streak of winning 16 in a row and you could probably hear why.
- 40:50For Al Favre, we're waiting for Christensen to warm up right now. How would you relate
- 40:53this to the Mets fans back in those early 60s when there was a lot of things going on
- 40:57at Shea Stadium? Close, but I don't believe anything quite as much as I've seen here today.
- 41:02And also I was going to ask you the same question, playing in World Series games in
- 41:06Ebbets Field, because the Ebbets Field fans were also very exuberant. Ebbets Field was
- 41:11like a morgue compared to this, believe me. They were a few of them you could hear across
- 41:15the field. But in general, the World Series at Ebbets Field, even though it was a hot
- 41:20set of baseball, was not like this. I've never seen this before. And we keep talking about
- 41:24it, but what it really did, it put the Phillies ahead and forced the starting pitcher, the
- 41:28Dodger starting pitcher out of the ball game. You know at Ebbets Field they had a character
- 41:31called Hilda Chester who had a bell, a cowbell that she used to ring. You wouldn't have
- 41:35heard that cowbell here ever with this kind of a noise.
- 41:39Well, Larry Christensen taking his time coming out to the mound, and he'll be taking on Davy
- 41:43Lopes, Phil Russell, and Reggie Smith as his first three batters, and the Dodgers behind
- 41:46for the first time. This is what you might call a home stadium advantage. There's no
- 41:53question about it. These Philadelphia Phillies fans are not to be denied. Last year the Cincinnati
- 41:58Reds took the Phillies down three straights. But the Philadelphia Phillies fans, we set
- 42:02a record this year coming out to watch ball games, some 2,700,070 strong and paid customers,
- 42:08out to see their Phillies in a World Championship World Series. Davy Lopes flying out to center
- 42:14field his first time up. He's had three hits and ten times up, batting 300 so far in this
- 42:18series. Dodgers have out hit the Phillies 4-2, and the Czechs swing ground ball hit out
- 42:23to Richie Hebner at first base, and Lopes is out on one fifth. That'll bring up Bill Russell.
- 42:32Russell lined out to the second baseman, Seismore, his first time up. He'll have had two hits
- 42:36and ten times up. This is the third game of the series. Christensen was reached for some
- 42:45strong bases in the second inning. He starts off with a slider that's in the dirt, back
- 42:48handed out of the dirt by Bob Boone. And the right hander back, and the next pitch is popped
- 42:57up in the air. The ball in foul territory, Mike Schmidt over by the coaches, box is under,
- 43:01then he makes the catch. So two quick outs. That'll bring up Reggie Schmidt. Reggie struck
- 43:08out his first time up. Christensen, after throwing a couple of changeups, got him with
- 43:12a fastball up around the letter. Smith batting two for nine in this series. Batting from
- 43:18the left hand side, an outstanding foot shitter. He was voted the most valuable player on the
- 43:23Dodgers squad this year, and the first pitch to Smith, a changeup that swung on a missed
- 43:29strike one. Dodgers jumped off to a seven and one half game lead in April. Biggest lead
- 43:36after one month of the season by a team. And they had a 14 game lead by July 31st. Next
- 43:43pitch is fouled away and the count strikes two. So once again Christensen settling down
- 43:46into a good groove as far as he's concerned.
- 43:55Ladies and gentlemen, temporarily we have lost the audio portion of the program coming
- 43:59from veteran stadium over CBS. And we'll give you a running account as we watch it on the
- 44:05TV monitor. A swinging strike and going down swinging is Reggie Smith. So they go out one,
- 44:13two, three in the top half of the third inning. So after two and a half, the Dodgers lead
- 44:19Dodgers by a score of three, two. So Christensen gets loped. Roslyn Smith in order, winding
- 44:24up, striking out Reggie Smith, a swinging strike, and the audio is back with us and
- 44:28we'll be going back to veteran stadium with it for the home third in just a few moments.
- 44:31Dave Parker, George Foster, and Greg Lazinski, three muscular outfielders, were overwhelming
- 44:36selections Friday on UPI's 1977 National League All-Star team. Parker led the league with a
- 44:413.38 average at 21 homers, knocking eight runs for the Pittsburgh Pirates. He was the
- 44:45only unanimous choice of 25 sports writers who participated in the UPI's annual survey.
- 44:50Foster had a 3.20, the 52 homers, 149 RBIs, for the Cincinnati Reds received 24 of a possible
- 44:5725 votes, while Lazinski, whose offensive performance was 309, batting average, 39 homers,
- 45:03130 RBIs for the third half, his Phillies received 23. The trio formed perhaps the hardest-hitting,
- 45:09most productive, mythical outfield in national league history. We'll check the other positions
- 45:14next time we have a break.
- 45:17We're going into the third inning and Rick Roden, who came on to put out the fire with
- 45:21the bases loaded by popping up Mike Schmidt, is on there now to start off the bottom of
- 45:25the third inning with Lazinski, Hebner, and Maddux coming on. Looking ahead to tomorrow's
- 45:30ballgame, which will start at 8.07 Eastern Daylight Time, it'll be Tommy John and Steve
- 45:35Crowden, the two left-handers, and a repeat performance of that first ballgame, neither
- 45:39of whom were the winning or losing pitchers. The loser in that first game was the reliever,
- 45:44Elisa Sosa, for the Dodgers, and Tug McGraw got the win. So you can look ahead at that
- 45:49one for tomorrow and we'll see how this one goes right now. Lazinski coming on and Ralph
- 45:52Hiner back to tell you all about it. Okay, Greg Lazinski, who is single in the second
- 45:56to get it going for the Philadelphia Phillies, batting for the second time. Rick Roden on
- 45:59the mound, batting, I guess, Roden for the first time, and Lazinski takes a high-pass
- 46:04ball of ball. Roden won two and lost none against the Phillies in the regular season
- 46:08as a starting pitcher. He did not relieve all year. Within 31 games as a starter, won 16
- 46:13and lost 10. And the right-hander back and he gets a strike over the outside corner.
- 46:17One ball and one strike. Lazinski second in the National League and runs about it in the
- 46:22postures 149. Lazinski had 130. And the big right-hander batter fouls off the next pitch
- 46:28in the count at one ball and two strikes.
- 46:37One ball and two strikes and the shadows again starting to extend out as the sun tries to
- 46:43break through and overcast sky. Temperature right around 60 degrees at game time. And
- 46:48here's the next pitch, a breaking ball, two balls, and the count at two balls and two
- 46:52strikes.
- 46:57Dodgers play Lazinski as a full hitter and they also playing fairly deep.
- 47:04Now the windup and two-two pitch and a high outside ball, three. Three balls, two strikes.
- 47:11With the bases loaded, Roden came into the ball game in the second under the most fine
- 47:15of circumstances and he got his first man out in one-fifth, Mike Smith. Right here,
- 47:19three and two to Lazinski and here's the fifth. And it's all four. And the base on balls
- 47:24have become the major factor in this ball game. That is the fifth base on balls,
- 47:29hit by a Dodgers fifth pitcher.
- 47:32So Lazinski is on and Richie Hebner is coming out.
- 47:35If you're down to Ozarks, the manager on a spot like this, you've got to be telling
- 47:40your players, look it, take one pitch, make them throw a strike. Make them go down the
- 47:45line. Here's a fellow at bat but doesn't take many. Richie Hebner, he ran it into a fourth
- 47:49play his first time out. Roden working from the set position for the first time and here's
- 47:54the pitch. And it's in the air to center field. Coming up on the ball is Mundy now accelerating
- 48:00as he moves in a little bit quicker as he slightly misjudged the ball but he got two
- 48:03up with the glasses down. Big guide against the sun and Hebner is out.
- 48:10That'll bring up Gary Maddux who also is a first ball hitter. Maddux was stuck out his
- 48:15first time out and that was his first appearance in the season. He missed the first two games
- 48:18because of an injured knee.
- 48:23Maddux the right hand batter.
- 48:24Garvey playing off the bag at first. Two or three steps as Lazinski does not figure the
- 48:28run except he has had one stolen base in the series in the regular season he had three.
- 48:34And the first pitch by Roden. It is rounded to the third baseman's say. He throws the
- 48:38second in time. The relay on the first base is not in time and Maddux who can really motor
- 48:42down that line beats the attempt at the double play. And when he hit that ball it broke the
- 48:47bat in half and the head of the bat went about 120 feet into foul territory down the left
- 48:52of your line.
- 48:53So Lazinski forced the second a fast man replacing him on at first and Gary Maddux no matter
- 48:58coming up will be Bob Boone.
- 49:01I've commented on that before Ralph Keiner. I don't believe they're putting the same
- 49:04wood in the bats they did a generation ago. I've seen that happen time and time again
- 49:08and only in the last three or four years.
- 49:11I think you're right. It's a different baseball and a different bat.
- 49:15But they're both round so it's still a tough game to play and here's the throw the first base
- 49:18Maddux back. Maddux had 22 out of 28 stolen bases this year.
- 49:24Give you a round bat and a round ball and they tell you to hit it square.
- 49:28Again a throw to first base and again Maddux is back.
- 49:31First base on fire Bruce Fromer.
- 49:36Ed Williams said hitting a baseball is the single hardest thing to do in any sport.
- 49:41Now the pitch and Boone pops in the shallow center field Rick Mundy coming up on the ball.
- 49:45He's there and he makes the catch and the side retards.
- 49:49No runs a walk and one man left on him to score.
- 49:51At the end of three it's the Philadelphia Phillies three and the Los Angeles Dodgers two.
- 49:56The rest of the All-Star team picked for the Irishman League.
- 49:59Also brought in the club besides the three hitters we mentioned a while ago were catcher Ted Simmons
- 50:03of the St. Louis Cardinals first baseman Steve Garvey of the LA Dodgers.
- 50:06Second baseman Joe Morgan of the Reds shortstop Gary Templeton the Cardinals
- 50:10and third baseman Mike Schmidt of the Phillies.
- 50:12Steve Carlton the late leading winner with 23 victories for the Phillies.
- 50:15And Tom Steve of the Reds who finished the year with a mark of 21-6
- 50:19were named the starting pitchers with Bruce Sudo the Cubs the Lopsided choice as the lead pitcher.

- 50:48The outfielders in right left and center field will be the ones that will be under the gun
- 50:52as far as fly balls are concerned.
- 50:54The infielders are out of the action now as far as any sun problems are concerned
- 50:58and as far as hitting it pretty much is leveled off.
- 51:01The biggest and the most difficult time of the day for a batter is when that shadow is midway between home plate and the mound.
- 51:08You seem as though you're looking into a glaring sun, a ball is hard to pick up
- 51:12although here at Veterans Stadium they have a delightful background where there is no problem with fans.
- 51:17On the mound right now taking his warm up tosses is Larry Christensen who had one difficult inning
- 51:22that was the second.
- 51:23They gave up four base hits and two runs.
- 51:26He had a runner thrown out at the plate that helped him.
- 51:28He managed to get the first three batters one, two, three in the first and the third inning.
- 51:32So now he's coming back again to the men that gave him trouble.
- 51:35Say, Garvey, Baker, Mundy, Yeager and of course who's in the ball game
- 51:39and the pitcher in there will be Rick Roden who is not a bad hitting pitcher himself.
- 51:44Okay the action will be continuing shortly now as Ron Say gets ready
- 51:49followed by Steve Garvey and a spring in Ralph Keiner once again.
- 51:52Okay Jerry Coleman, Parky Anderson who participated as manager in the past two playoff games
- 51:59championship playoff games and was the manager of the Cincinnati Reds over the past two years
- 52:03as the world's campingship Cincinnati Reds.
- 52:05But talking to Danny Ozark about playoff games and he said playoff games are like having a heart attack.
- 52:12You know you're having it and you can't do anything about it.
- 52:14Ozark said I found that out.
- 52:17And last year's playoff now it's time for Tom Lasota to find it out
- 52:21and right now with this crowd here I'm sure Tom Lasota is seeing and hearing something he has never seen before.
- 52:26Ron Say coming up, Ron grunted out the third his first time up, right hand batter, strong right hand batter
- 52:32and Christian some of his first pitch and he throws the curveball for a called strike.
- 52:35They have three for eight so far in this series.
- 52:41Dodgers have out hit the Phillies four to two with the Phillies that picked up five walks.
- 52:45The next pitch is out of the strike zone. One ball and one strike.
- 52:48The ball game is being watched by the governor of Pennsylvania, Milton Schaap
- 52:53as well as about 58,000 people and a pitch in the dirt backhanded out of the dirt by Boone
- 52:58and they count two balls and one strike.
- 53:03They were that dramatic grand slam home run at the time of the first game
- 53:06but it will not be remembered too long I don't believe because the Dodgers lost.
- 53:10Next pitch is taken low and it's ball three.
- 53:13Dusty Baker had a grand slam home run in the second game for the Dodgers.
- 53:17That will be remembered because the Dodgers won that ball game.
- 53:21One of our scores seven to one.
- 53:23And the next pitch to say is swung on and fouled back out of play.
- 53:27So a four count of three and two.
- 53:30Right to the right reminds you that tomorrow's game will see Tommy John pitching for the Dodgers
- 53:34against Steve Carlton will be on the air Eastern Daylight Time at eight oh seven.
- 53:40American League has their game tonight at eight oh seven Eastern Daylight Time.
- 53:44They'll be playing in Kansas City the Yankees there and then on Saturday they'll play before the National League.
- 53:50Sunday they'll be playing at one oh seven Eastern Daylight Time.
- 53:55And the next pitch is lined the left center field off and running is Maddox.
- 53:58He can't get to it it bounces off his glove.
- 54:00Faye will try for two the throw by Maddox is not in time and Faye goes in with a double.
- 54:06Harry Maddox the center fielder tried to make that a brilliant catch but he couldn't quite get to it
- 54:11and he knocked it down in a half off and the ball rolled away.
- 54:14So say he is on a second base and the batter coming up will be Steve Garvey.
- 54:19Warren Brewster is warming up on the bullpen.
- 54:22Right hander for the Philadelphia Phillies.
- 54:25Dodgers picking up their fifth hit.
- 54:29And they have the potential time run the second base with no one out.
- 54:34Garvey singled and scored in the second.
- 54:36Four for eight in this series.
- 54:41Faye taking some extra time to get the dirt out of his belt buckle and inside of his pants.
- 54:47As he made a belly slide into second base although the play was not close as the throw was off line.
- 54:55Little reaction by the Potterson crowd here in Philadelphia.
- 55:00And Christensen sets up here is the pitch and Garvey takes it high and inside.
- 55:04He looked like he was trying to hit behind the runner going out toward right field but he did not swing.
- 55:10Garvey an excellent team man.
- 55:15Now Christensen with his next pitch and again Garvey looks as though he is trying to hit behind the runner
- 55:19but Christensen with a good pitch on the inside corner.
- 55:22A tough pitch to hit to right field and Garvey took it.
- 55:25One ball one strike.
- 55:27And the right hander ready.
- 55:29Here is the pitch and Garvey takes it high and outside.
- 55:32It's ball two.
- 55:34Two balls one strike.
- 55:37Larry Christensen from Everett Washington.
- 55:42Twenty-three years of age and now his next pitch and Garvey fouls it back out of play.
- 55:47Counted two balls and two strikes.
- 55:52Garvey led the club and runs about it in during the regular season.
- 55:57At one fifteen.
- 56:02And now the pitch is grounded slowly out to the shortstop ball who goes across the diving after feeling the ball for a play at first.
- 56:08The ball hits two easily for any play at third and same moves over the third base.
- 56:13So the potential time run is at third with one man out in Dusty Baker the batter.
- 56:17Dusty doubled in the left center field his first time up to drive and a run.
- 56:29Baker with five runs better than the series he's had three hits in eight times up.
- 56:37Kelly's bring their infield in for a play at the plate and Christensen working from the set position and a first pitch to sit down the right field line.
- 56:44It might be trouble coming up the ball as McBride he had trouble seeing it and then after a spurt at the last minute he could not catch up to it and dropped in foul territory.
- 56:53You know Ralph the way Danny Ozark has been using his bullpen the minute that Christensen has been in trouble with a man on he's had that bullpen going.
- 57:00Which makes me wonder if Christensen even though he had that great record at the end of the year may be as sharp as he wants to be.
- 57:06It may be that Bob Boone the catcher has said something to his manager to have somebody ready just in case.
- 57:11Well the Phillies have that good depth in the bullpen they've had great success with it so they use it a lot.
- 57:17Oh and Brewster now throwing in the bullpen for the Philadelphia Phillies they have Brewster, Reed, Garver, McGraw.
- 57:27One strike count as Christensen goes to the set here's the pitch and it is taken inside.
- 57:33Baker's got in the swing and held up in time one ball and one strike.
- 57:46I'm saying the runner at third base Christensen ready and the pitch to Baker's swung on and fouled back out of play.
- 57:53Good fastball foul off one and two.
- 58:01One of the interesting highlights about young Larry Christensen is that when he first came up he dripped the ball too tightly and he threw darts.
- 58:08His ball didn't move he's holding it much more loosely now and getting more effect from the fastball.
- 58:13And in one two the pitch to Baker a breaking ball just ball on the count two balls and two strikes.
- 58:21Christensen had only one shutout in the regular season with five complete games while winning 19 and losing six and what a finish.
- 58:27The second and third in the regular season and the second and third in the regular season.
- 58:32And the last 16 of his last 16 decisions went on the far side and he won his last seven straight.
- 58:39And a 2-2 the pitch to Dusty Baker lying but fouled on the left field line.
- 58:44So the count remains at two balls and two strikes.
- 58:53He struck out 118 in the regular season he gave up 21 home runs.
- 59:01There was a lot of controversy about whether Christensen should have started the second game instead of this one.
- 59:07And again he sets up for 2-2 and here it comes and it's lost it into shallow right center field it'll be a base hit.
- 59:13All bouncing around and a bride had to jump to catch it.
- 59:15Holding up a third was say to be sure that it would be a base hit and then he comes in the store.
- 59:19The throw of them by McBride is not in time.
- 59:22So Baker gets his sixth run better than the series and he has tied up the ball game as he singles in the right center field.
- 59:29A little lob in there and they score some third.
- 59:33So it's now a tie game at three and the batter coming up will be Rick Mundy.
- 59:38Rogers have their sixth base hit.
- 59:41Phillies have only two but they have five walks to go with a two base hit.
- 59:46Three of the walks came with a base as little as a four-sin three runs.
- 59:51Burt Houten on them out of the time and I would have to say that the crowd certainly had a lot to do with the walks as they really brought the roof down.
- 1:00:03So Baker at first base Christensen checks in and here's the pitch and it's lined down the left field line but it's serving foul and it is out of play.
- 1:00:12All deep in the left field corner foul by 10 or 15 feet.
- 1:00:15And the crowd here unhappy with Annie Ozark. I think they would like to see a pitching change.
- 1:00:21Philadelphia Philly fans are deep in the baseball and they manage.
- 1:00:26The base hit that Dusty Baker got I think is a classic difference between artificial surface and natural field because you have to lay back.
- 1:00:33That ball bounce is too far in front of you. It's over your head and it goes for an inside the park home run and that's kept Baker McBride just far enough back.
- 1:00:40And it gave Baker a chance, I mean say a chance to score.
- 1:00:43Now the pitch back to Monday line by the first baseman almost this Baker he had to hold for a second.
- 1:00:48He goes to second base and holds there McBride feels the ball and gets it back in.
- 1:00:52So Monday with a hard single the right field and the crowd now clamoring for the removal of the pitcher Larry Christensen.
- 1:01:00And here comes the manager of the Philadelphia Phillies Danny Ozark.
- 1:01:09The manager of the Philadelphia Phillies and he has made the sign and that is all for Larry Christensen.
- 1:01:14Larry working through three and one third inning so far charged with three runs on a total of seven base hits.
- 1:01:22He struck out two and walked none and Warren Brewster the new pitcher of the ballgame and Christensen a 19 game winner with six losses goes off the mound.
- 1:01:31And you get the hand here from the partisan crowd.
- 1:01:36Brewster coming in the ballgame had a record of seven wins and two losses with three saves.
- 1:01:44And in the regular season Brewster appeared in 46 games all in relief.
- 1:01:49Spells his name B-R-U-S-S T-A-R.
- 1:01:57So Brewster coming in the ballgame in place of Larry Christensen and he'll be working to see Jager the catcher.
- 1:02:10The only pitcher to really master the other team as far in the first three games here in the National Championship Playoff Series was Don Sutton although he picked a nine hitter.
- 1:02:19The other night he allowed the Phillies only one run he went all the way for the complete game victory.
- 1:02:24The first game Tommy John and Steve Carlin started but they all they go to the roof.
- 1:02:28And in this game we have already had both starting pitchers out of the ballgame.
- 1:02:33Bert Hooten lasted only an inning and two thirds giving up a couple of hits and three runs.
- 1:02:38And the three runs were walked in on a base on balls as Hooten was forced into four successive walks.
- 1:02:45That could be a World Series record.
- 1:02:47Larry Christensen has gone three and a third giving up seven hits.
- 1:02:51Three runs so far he could be charged with two more, struck out a couple but he did not walk them in.
- 1:02:56And now we've got a new one in there Warren Brewster who is also a first repeat pitcher in this championship series.
- 1:03:02No other pitcher has been in two ballgames and now Brewster becomes the first.
- 1:03:06Brewster worked two innings in a ballgame won by the Dodgers seven to one the second game of the series.
- 1:03:13He gave up one run on two hits and struck out two.
- 1:03:18Brewster was born in Oakland, California.
- 1:03:20He lives in Napa, California.
- 1:03:22The home of all that great California wine.
- 1:03:26Or not all of it but some of it anyway.
- 1:03:28He was the Phillies fourth selection in the secondary phase of the 1974 draft.
- 1:03:33He was signed by a former major leaguer, Eddie Bachman.
- 1:03:37Started pitching minor league ball in 1974.
- 1:03:43He was a graduate of Napa Junior College.
- 1:03:45He attended Fresno State for many years and one of the members of Fresno State, Tom Siever.
- 1:03:52Along with many others as a matter of fact they have turned out quite a few outstanding ball players.
- 1:03:57First pitch is off of the glove of Bob Boone, a fastball and the runners move up on the fastball.
- 1:04:03Pitch was an inside fastball and popping out of the glove of Boone and the runners move on over.
- 1:04:07So that could be a big play in the ballgame as Dusty Baker goes to third and Rick Mundy on down to second.
- 1:04:14First base is now open. We'll see whether or not they'll be pitching.
- 1:04:18To Steve Yeager, the pitcher Rick Roden is due up next.
- 1:04:21No action in the bullpen for the Dodgers.
- 1:04:23High ballgame at three and the infield is in and the next pitch is outside.
- 1:04:26They're going to walk in.
- 1:04:29Walk to set up a possible double play and the pitch outside for ball three.
- 1:04:33Roden's a pretty good hitter.
- 1:04:35It's 2-31 with three home runs in the regular season and 12 runs batted in.
- 1:04:39It's not going to be an easy task for Booster as the next pitch is outside for an intentional walk.
- 1:04:49That's the first walk for the Dodgers in the ballgame and the Phillies have had five.
- 1:05:00Rick Roden, the right hand batter, the Dodger infield back for two and the first pitch is swung on to miss to strike one.
- 1:05:10Roden batted 300 for the Dodgers last year.
- 1:05:14Outstanding Dodger hitting pitches with Don Drysdale at a 300 year one.
- 1:05:19Pitch is next outside and the count of one ball and one strike.
- 1:05:25Walter Johnson was one of the greatest hitting pitchers.
- 1:05:30The best home run hitter for a pitcher was Rick Farrell.
- 1:05:34What's Farrell?
- 1:05:36Pardon me, the brother of Rick who had 38 in a single year.
- 1:05:38There's a drive in the right center field at Mike's score run.
- 1:05:40Baker comes over to catch it coming in to try and score.
- 1:05:42Baker here comes a throw at 10-time and a tag is made by Boone.
- 1:05:46Baker tries to bowl him over and that is the second man throwing out of the plate by the Philadelphia Phillies.
- 1:05:52And it retires to tie.
- 1:05:55A standing ovation for Bob Boone as Baker's throw from right center field was extremely accurate.
- 1:06:01In the inning, one run on three hits and two men left on base.
- 1:06:05And the score at the end of three and a half innings is the Dodgers three and the Phillies three.
- 1:06:11Dale Earnhardt toured the Charlotte Motor Speedway at 154.630 miles per hour Friday
- 1:06:17to lead six Chevrolet drivers in the final qualifying for Sunday's $250,000 National 500 NASCAR race at Charlotte, North Carolina.
- 1:06:27Earnhardt will start his Chevrolet in the 36th spot in the 41-car field.
- 1:06:31Other qualifiers in order were Butch Hartman, Roland Walatka, Jimmy Means, Cecil Gordon, and Tick Scott.
- 1:06:40So far in the ball game here at Veterans Stadium.
- 1:06:43It's all even at three as we go to the last half of the fourth inning, but the Dodgers have come a proper at-home plate.
- 1:06:49In the second inning, Steve Yeager was cut down trying to score on a play that went from Lozinski to Schmidt to the catcher Boone.
- 1:06:56And then here in this inning, a line drive out to the right fielder, Baik McBride, who one-hopped it into Boone again,
- 1:07:02who made, I thought, a spectacular grab, a one-handed tag with his catching glove.
- 1:07:08And he nailed Baker trying to commit from third base.
- 1:07:11So the Dodgers have had two men nailed at the plate, and one did just get in under the slide, and that was Steve Garvey.
- 1:07:18So they've had a lot of action at home plate, and Harry Wendlestep, the home plate umpire, will be happy to get out of the hot seat after today's ball game.
- 1:07:25He's had some work before and we're only in the fourth inning.
- 1:07:28He has really been involved in this ball game, three decisions at home, and also he was in the middle of the walk by Bert Hooten,
- 1:07:37and Hooten thought for sure that he had struck out the pitcher and was out of the inning when the ball was called a ball,
- 1:07:44and he had to continue to pitch, and he went on the walk Larry Christensen had forced in the run.
- 1:07:49He went on the walk Baik McBride had forced in the run.
- 1:07:51He went on the walk Larry Ball that forced into the uh, forced in the run.
- 1:07:56Ron Reed is now throwing in the bullpen for the Philadelphia Phillies as Rick Roden completes his warm-up pitch.
- 1:08:03It's Thasmore to lead off. Tommy Hutton is in the on deck circle.
- 1:08:09So Brewster used for just a short period.
- 1:08:13Appears to be going out of the ball game and the Phillies will go to their strong hard-flying right-hander Ron Reed.
- 1:08:19Thasmore walked his first time up on four pitches.
- 1:08:23That got it going for the Philadelphia Phillies and Thasmore batting for the first time against Rick Roden and the pitch is two in the tie for ball one.
- 1:08:32Dodgers about hit the Phillies seven to two but walks count.
- 1:08:39Frankie Pritch the old manager used to say oh those bases are on balls.
- 1:08:45And a pitch for a track it's one and one.
- 1:08:48And Thasmore tries to bun it at the Goodman-Lopes, talking bare hands.
- 1:08:51It throws the first base in time to Garvey in a fine play by Davy Lopes.
- 1:08:55Thasmore did his job but the Dodgers anticipating the play and Lopes coming in from a shallow position with great speed to bare hand the ball.
- 1:09:03He had to hurry and he did make the play.
- 1:09:05So Thasmore bunts out and that'll bring up Tommy Hutton.
- 1:09:14Hutton the one-time member of the Dodger organization was traded away.
- 1:09:20The Dodgers had enough first basemen at that time.
- 1:09:23Hutton in the regular season hit at 3-0-9.
- 1:09:26He had two home runs, 11 runs about an end.
- 1:09:28All for two in this series and he takes the first pitch to call a strike.
- 1:09:36Hutton was a pinch hitter in the second game and lined out the left field.
- 1:09:41In the first game he went in defensively and batted once and did not have a base hit.
- 1:09:46The next pitch by Roden is in the dirt and it bounces away one ball and one strike.
- 1:09:56High ball game at three.
- 1:10:00Bottom half of the fourth inning and Rick Roden's next pitch, fastball that's outside.
- 1:10:06Two balls, one strike.
- 1:10:17Now the signs are out and the next delivery on the way and it's popped up on the third base side.
- 1:10:21Moving back as Ron Faye, he's being run off the play by the shortstop Bill Ruckel.
- 1:10:25Ruckel puts it away for two men away.
- 1:10:29That'll bring up Jake McGride. McGride has walked the fourth in the run.
- 1:10:33McGride is in the second of the series.
- 1:10:36Then of course he gets the hand for the fine crow that cut down.
- 1:10:39Leslie Baker trying to score the go-ahead run and the top of the fourth inning.
- 1:10:46McGride four for ten, batting 400 in this championship series.
- 1:10:50LCS they call it, League Championship Series.
- 1:10:55And Roden into the windup and here's the pitch to McGride, a hard ground ball right at Ruckel at shortstop.
- 1:11:00He feels it on the artificial turf and lobs it over the first base where it's taken by Garvey in the side, retired and ordered.
- 1:11:06And the score at the end of four, the Dodgers three and the Phillies three.
- 1:11:12More auto racing news, British Formula One driver,
- 1:11:15Ian Ashley was flown to a hospital with his legs and wrists broken today after his racing car became airborne
- 1:11:21and qualifying for the Grand Prix of Canada colliding with a folding setup for an unmanned trackside television camera.
- 1:11:27Ashley was struck or stuck in the car for 45 minutes before he was taken to the track hospital
- 1:11:32from where he was flown by helicopter to Toronto's Sunnybrook Hospital.
- 1:11:38He was conscious and in stable condition.
- 1:11:44The two pitching staff, Philadelphia and the Los Angeles Dodgers.
- 1:11:48When the Phillies started to get in trouble they went to their bullpen.
- 1:11:50Warren Brewster came in for only two-thirds of an inning and now another man from the bullpen, Ron Reed,
- 1:11:55moving in to pitch the fifth inning against Los Angeles.
- 1:11:58When the Dodgers got into trouble early for long relief they went to one of their starters, Rick Rodin.
- 1:12:03The Dodger bullpen has not been as effective as Tommy Lasorda would like and therefore he has talked about using both Rodin and Doug Rowe,
- 1:12:13a left-hander in the bullpen and now Rodin is in that ballgame. We'll have to see how it develops.
- 1:12:16We've gone through four, we're all even.
- 1:12:19Dodgers three runs, seven hits, no errors. Phillies three runs, two hits and no errors.
- 1:12:24Now let's bring in Ralph Tanner.
- 1:12:26Okay, Jerry Coleman. Reed had a record of seven wins and five losses in a regular season with 15 saves.
- 1:12:31He had an urban average of 2.76 and he was in 60 ballgames.
- 1:12:35In this series he has appeared once before, he went two innings, gave up no runs on two hits while striking out two and walking one.
- 1:12:43And Reed will be working to the second baseman, Davey Lopes.
- 1:12:49Lopes three through 11 in this series, 0 for 2 in this ballgame.
- 1:12:55And Reed, who throws a good change up along with a sidearm fastball and a slider and curve, starts off with an overhand fastball.
- 1:13:02It's time for ball one. Throws the ball from all around.
- 1:13:07A basketball player at Notre Dame also played with the Detroit Pistons. And the next pitch is swung on a miss, it's one and one.
- 1:13:21The crowd has quieted down since that rock at second inning.
- 1:13:25And the next pitch is hit hard to the shortstop Larry Boy. He gets in front of it, slingshots the ball to first base and Davey Lopes to quick out.
- 1:13:35It's Bill Russell coming up. Russell lined the second and fouled out his two times up.
- 1:13:40Bill with two hits and 11 times up.
- 1:13:44The wind is no factor in this ballgame and it seldom is in this stadium. It's an enclosed circular stadium.
- 1:13:54And the first pitch to Russell, a called strike.
- 1:13:573.30 down each line, 3.71 in the power alleys and four away in the straightaway center field. The fence is 12 feet high.
- 1:14:05And it's artificial serve. Next pitch is lobbed out and back a third and coming hard as Luzinski lets it drop in front of him as he plays the safety hop.
- 1:14:13And going in the second base with a double is Bill Russell.
- 1:14:17Luzinski, and we've got artificial serve here, afraid to take the chance of trying to come in and shoot through it and if he misjudges it on a shoot through if it gets by it's got to be inside the park.
- 1:14:29It's a whole new ballgame when you play on artificial serve.
- 1:14:33Fences were lower here in the early days of Veterans Stadium. They raised the fences at 12 feet hoping to keep the ball in play.
- 1:14:38When the ball would go to the outfield they would bounce over the fence where grounds rules doubled and they would lose three base hits.
- 1:14:45Now the first pitch to Reggie Smith who is 0 for 2 is taken for her ball. Reggie 2 for 10 in the series.
- 1:14:56And the pitch back to the left hand batter, the change up but it's out of the strike zone. Two balls and no strikes.
- 1:15:06Dodgers with eight hits, the Phillies have had two and the game is tied at three.
- 1:15:11Reggie's next pitch is swung on a miss and a fastball miss that time, two balls and one strike.
- 1:15:23Reggie steps out of the batter's box.
- 1:15:26Now gets back in, holds the bat very high.
- 1:15:29Came to the Dodgers from the St. Louis Cardinals.
- 1:15:32And the next pitch is hit foul into the stands on the left field side so they counted two balls and two strikes.
- 1:15:40Reggie batted 3-0-7 in the regular season with 32 home runs and 87 RBI.
- 1:15:45A versatile person who flies his own airplane, gourmet cook, does about anything he wants to.
- 1:15:52Now at 2-2, reads next pitch. Fastball high and inside and they count full now. Three balls, two strikes. The on deck batter runs six.
- 1:16:03Smith started his career with a Boston Red Sox.
- 1:16:10Has one of the great arms in baseball history.
- 1:16:13Three and two they count, here's the pitch and it's a check swing one.
- 1:16:17Reggie Smith is called out by home plate umpire Harry Wendelstadt.
- 1:16:21Miss checks to see whether or not it was a swinging strike or a call strike.
- 1:16:27That's again an account of Earthly and that's the third time Reggie has gone back to the bench with a bat in his hand.
- 1:16:34First strike out for Reed and with two men out the batter will be Ron Say.
- 1:16:43They had a double as last time up. He's one for two.
- 1:16:47Right hand batter.
- 1:16:49And the first pitch at fastball high, ball one.
- 1:16:57They're giving credits on the message board for all the media coverage radio and TV wise and it'll take about 20 minutes to get all the names up there.
- 1:17:05This thing is really being covered. They swing at the next pitch at fastball, one ball, one strike.
- 1:17:18High ball game at three. The Dodgers with a runner at second base, Bill Russell there.
- 1:17:22Two men away were in the top of the fifth inning.
- 1:17:26And the pitch it is fouled back out of play.
- 1:17:31One ball, two strikes.
- 1:17:39The Dodgers led two nothing after one and a half innings. The Phillies led three to two after two.
- 1:17:44And the Dodgers tied it up with a run in the fourth.
- 1:17:47Next pitch to say is up five.
- 1:17:49And they count two balls and two strikes.
- 1:18:03Once again the signs are out and a two-two. The pitch by Reed.
- 1:18:07They check the swing and foul the ball off on the first base side.
- 1:18:11Grounded out to the right side.
- 1:18:14And it remains a two balls and two strikes.
- 1:18:17Ron Reed started his career as a starting pitcher for the Atlanta Braves.
- 1:18:23In 1969 he won his high in the Major Leagues 18 as Atlanta became the Western Division champions and lost to the Mets.
- 1:18:32And a swing and a miss and say it's stuck out and that ends the inning.
- 1:18:37Reed getting his first two strike out to the ball game.
- 1:18:41Four times one hit. A man left his second in the score at the end of four and a half innings.
- 1:18:45The Dodgers three and the Phillies three.
- 1:18:51Well this is a ball game that belongs now to the relief pitchers.
- 1:18:55Larry Christensen, Warren Brewster and Ron Reed have been in there for Philadelphia and for the Dodgers.
- 1:19:00Bert Hooten and Rick Rodin.
- 1:19:02And for those of you who may have missed the histronics in that second inning with Bert Hooten on the mound for the Dodgers.
- 1:19:09He was sailing right along. Gave up a single to Greg Lazinski but he got Hevner forcing Lazinski a second.
- 1:19:14Then he struck out Gary Maddux and then a single to Bob Boone and then it all started.
- 1:19:19He walked Ted Sizemore loading the bases.
- 1:19:22Larry Christensen the pitcher came on and on a questionable call it seemed upset.
- 1:19:27He walked off the mound and started talking to himself and for some reason this seemed to activate the fans here at Bethlen Stadium in Philadelphia.
- 1:19:34Because Christensen amid the roaring of the crowd drew a base on balls to drive in one run.
- 1:19:41Then following walks to McBride and Boa and suddenly the Phillies had moved ahead three to two.
- 1:19:46The Dodgers have since tied it and that's where we stand right now.
- 1:19:55So right here in Bethlen Stadium in Philadelphia as the evening starts to come into its own.
- 1:20:02The game started with the sun shining brightly but the lights are starting to take some effect and as we move into the twilight.
- 1:20:08Not necessarily to take you to the twilight zone but to take you through the ball game here's Jerry Coleman.
- 1:20:13Okay Ralph Keiner, Larry Boa, Mike Schmidt and Greg Lazinski are coming on the Phillies although they have three runs.
- 1:20:20And the game is tied at three a piece have only a couple of base hits.
- 1:20:23Lazinski and Boone singles in the second inning have been hit.
- 1:20:27Rick Roden relief of Bird Hooten now on the mound for the Dodgers and the tall right handers ready with the first one.
- 1:20:33It's on the way to Boa fouled off strike one.
- 1:20:36Larry Boa bounced the short and drew a base on balls and it was his walk that forced Bird Hooten out of the ball game.
- 1:20:42And brought in Roden who retired the side on one pitch to Mike Schmidt.
- 1:20:47A dramatic ball game thus far a key ball game. Tomorrow it's Carle-Den and John.
- 1:20:53Boa started a bunt pulls his bat away and takes it low and outside one ball one strike.
- 1:20:58Ron Say is very tight at third base looking for the possible bunt.
- 1:21:02Bill Russell a shortstop. Dave Lopes at second. Steve Garvey at first all very shallow.
- 1:21:07Boa with good speed waiting and the pitch on the way by Roden is outside.
- 1:21:13Two balls and a strike.
- 1:21:15The outfield shading to the left side Dusty Baker left field.
- 1:21:19Rick Mundy in center. Reggie Smith in right.
- 1:21:21A huge gazing hole in right center.
- 1:21:24Here's a 2-1 pitch to Boa. Pops it up and comes back into the stands out of play.
- 1:21:28Two balls two strikes.
- 1:21:31Boa had four home runs this year matching his entire major league output the first seven years.
- 1:21:38Has a total of eight now.
- 1:21:42Boa waiting. Roden checking him out.
- 1:21:45Boa is two for nine in the action.
- 1:21:48Waits for the next one and pops it foul again.
- 1:21:51That's over the Dodger dugout into the crowd.
- 1:21:54The count stays two balls and two strikes.
- 1:21:57Phillies after Boa will send up their big guns Mike Schmidt and Greg Lazinski.
- 1:22:07Yeager the Dodger catcher has the sign down.
- 1:22:10Roden is reading him he's into the lineup.
- 1:22:12The right hander's 2-2 pitch to Boa.
- 1:22:14Great play on a backhanded grab by the shortstop Bill Russell.
- 1:22:18That looked like it was headed for left field.
- 1:22:20Russell dashing into the hole backhanded it and hauled it in for an outstanding play.
- 1:22:25Boa's out of there on a live drive to the shortstop.
- 1:22:29Bill Russell came up with a dandy.
- 1:22:31Boa's gone one away fifth and that'll bring on Mike Schmidt.
- 1:22:36Schmidt has not been the hitter in this playoff series that he was a year ago.
- 1:22:40He has won 4-11 overall.
- 1:22:45Mike from the right side waits and the fastball almost hit him as he backs away for ball one.
- 1:22:51Schmidt with a total of 38 home runs.
- 1:22:55Three years prior to this he led the National League in homers but this year George Foster with 52 took it away.
- 1:23:03The next pitch on the way to Schmidt is inside.
- 1:23:06Two balls and no strikes.
- 1:23:08Schmidt in the playoff last year against Cincinnati was the one shining light for Philadelphia.
- 1:23:13He batted 308.
- 1:23:16Right now he is struggling trying to come up with some hits.
- 1:23:18Three-three tie, bottom of the fifth as Schmidt takes low and inside and Roden has gone three balls and no strikes.
- 1:23:28Veteran Stadium Philadelphia.
- 1:23:31Cloudy overcast day now.
- 1:23:33It started that way then the sun came out and now the clouds are appearing again.
- 1:23:36A 3-0 delivery and it's good for a strike.
- 1:23:38Three and one.
- 1:23:40Three balls, one strike, one down.
- 1:23:43Ron Reid for Philadelphia.
- 1:23:46Rick Roden for the Dodgers are the pitchers of record.
- 1:23:48Both starters out of the ball game.
- 1:23:50The 3-1 pitch on the way to Schmidt and it's inside ball four.
- 1:24:00That's the second walk given up by Roden.
- 1:24:02He is not allowed a base hit but he has walked two men.
- 1:24:05He walked Lazinski in the third and now opening up with one down here in the fifth inning.
- 1:24:09He walks Mike Schmidt.
- 1:24:13Lazinski who has one for one a single and a base on ball.
- 1:24:21The ball put the fills on the board of Dodgers Stadium with a booming home run in the first inning.
- 1:24:27He's in there right now and the throw is taken outside.
- 1:24:30A snap throw by Yeager to first and Schmidt gets back.
- 1:24:33Schmidt stole 15 bases this year.
- 1:24:35He's got good speed.
- 1:24:37Possibly one of the greatest big athletes going in baseball today.
- 1:24:41He can do it all.
- 1:24:43He can run, he can throw, he can field, he can hit and hit for power.
- 1:24:47Schmidt on a first base.
- 1:24:48Garvey holding against him.
- 1:24:49Infield swung way off to the left.
- 1:24:51Lopes swell toward second as Lazinski waits.
- 1:24:54Here's Roden's delivery and it's in there.
- 1:24:57One ball, one strike, a hard slide.
- 1:24:58I got the outside corner.
- 1:25:03Schmidt with 15 stolen bases this year is on a first base.
- 1:25:07He was cut down eight times.
- 1:25:12A one-one count as Roden steps back off the rubber.
- 1:25:15Check the run at first.
- 1:25:18Dodgers three runs, eight hits.
- 1:25:20The Phillies three runs and two hits.
- 1:25:22Here's the pitch to Lazinski and it's nine inside.
- 1:25:24Two balls and a strike.
- 1:25:39Roden is ready again.
- 1:25:40He checks Schmidt at first.
- 1:25:42Lazinski waiting and a pitch on the way to Gregg is fouled back.
- 1:25:45Another slider.
- 1:25:46He got a piece of that one.
- 1:25:47Two balls and two strikes.
- 1:25:51It looks like Elias Sosa is throwing in the Dodger bullpen now with Roden
- 1:25:55having given up a walk to Mike Schmidt.
- 1:25:57Although Roden has not given up a base hit.
- 1:26:01In this ball game it is such a critical ball game to both teams at both managers.
- 1:26:05Tommy Lasorda of the Dodgers, Danny Ozark of the Phillies,
- 1:26:09are at hair trigger when it comes to their pitches.
- 1:26:11The first moment they get into trouble they try another man.
- 1:26:17Roden, a long look at Jaeger.
- 1:26:20Fans, you can hear them starting to come.
- 1:26:24And now Roden steps back off the rubber.
- 1:26:29It was a situation something like this in the second inning that forced Bird hooting out
- 1:26:34and the fans are starting to come to life again.
- 1:26:38The 2-2 pitch has popped up.
- 1:26:41Third baseman Ron Say in foul territory is under it and grabs it for the second out.
- 1:26:47Roden did not succumb to the fans here on that pitch.
- 1:26:50He nails Greg Lozinski a big out.
- 1:26:55Now Richie Hebner, left-hand batter, is going to hit.
- 1:26:58Hebner bounced the second base.
- 1:27:00He flied to center field.
- 1:27:01He's going to 0-2 and he has scored a run.
- 1:27:07Hebner overall in the series is 2-7.
- 1:27:12When Dave Cash played out his option and went on his way to Montreal,
- 1:27:17Hebner came over from Pittsburgh and ended up at first base
- 1:27:20and then the Phillies managed a trade for Ted Sizemore from the Dodgers.
- 1:27:24And of course Sizemore batting on the eighth spot in this lineup today
- 1:27:27and going against his old teammates.
- 1:27:303-3 tie, last of the fifth, 2 down, Hebner waiting.
- 1:27:34Roden, a long set and the delivery to Hebner.
- 1:27:37Ted high at a right field but not deep.
- 1:27:40Reggie Smith drifting in.
- 1:27:42He's under and he has it for the final out here in the fifth inning.
- 1:27:46No run, no hits, no errors.
- 1:27:48A man left.
- 1:27:49We've gone through five.
- 1:27:50It's the Dodgers, three runs, eight hits.
- 1:27:52The Phillies, three runs, two hits.
- 1:27:55With relations between the two clubs strained because of Thursday evening's hard slot incident,
- 1:28:00second base, New York Yankees and Kansas City Royals sent their top right-handers to the mound
- 1:28:04Friday night in the third game of the American League playoffs,
- 1:28:06Mike Torres, the choice of Billy Martin of the Yankees to start,
- 1:28:10who even the series at one game apiece with that victory on Thursday,
- 1:28:12while Dennis Leonard, the manager of Whitey Herzog, takes the start for the Royals.
- 1:28:17They began in Kansas City with heavy rain falling for more than 12 hours,
- 1:28:21but the rain stopped in the early afternoon.
- 1:28:24The grounds crew had the artificial surface at Royal Stadium in perfect condition.
- 1:28:29If the game will begin, we won't know that for a few hours yet.
- 1:28:33Overcast skies right now, temperatures in the 50s, 80 percent chance of rain.
- 1:28:42So that's the story of that one.
- 1:28:43The story of our game is all tied up after 5-3-3, both starting pitchers and now the shower
- 1:28:49or in the dugout or watching in the shower room on television.
- 1:28:55What time of year are you often here, baseball fans, saying, wait till next year?
- 1:28:59And while your favorite team is planning for 1978, you should too by ordering season tickets.
- 1:29:04Now is the time when the best locations are available for your family or business.
- 1:29:09So if you missed any of baseball's excitement this past season, act now and ensure choice seats for all of the fun of 1978.
- 1:29:17You'll find yourself saying, I just can't wait till next year.
- 1:29:21Proceeding has been brought to you on behalf of Major League Baseball.
- 1:29:26Well, it's been a strange game.
- 1:29:29It's the Dodgers three and the Phillies and their fans three.
- 1:29:32The Phillies fans certainly into the act as they got in and teared their team onto a leading position.
- 1:29:39Right now we're going back to the action and once again Jerry Coleman.
- 1:29:43Steve Garvey, Dusty Baker, Rick Mundy coming on against the giant right-hander Ron Reid who goes in at 6-6
- 1:29:48and Garvey's first swing at a fastball is missed for strike one.
- 1:29:52Garvey, right-hand batter, one for two in this ball game and four for nine overall.
- 1:29:59The next one by Reid, a breaking ball in the dirt.
- 1:30:02Outfield, well over to the left side, Luzinski on left, Maddox in center, Tate McBride in right field.
- 1:30:08The infield is deep at all spots.
- 1:30:11Here's Reid again and the delivery foul back.
- 1:30:15A ball and two strikes. Mike Schmidt, the third baseman.
- 1:30:19Shortstop Larry Boat, Ted Sizemore at second, Rich Hebner at first and Bob Boone doing the catching.
- 1:30:25Reid is the third Philly pitcher in relief of Warren Brewster who picked it up for Larry Christensen.
- 1:30:31Garvey waits and the one-two delivery just off the corner.
- 1:30:35Reid thought he had it, the plate on fire didn't give it to him.
- 1:30:38Two balls, two strikes.
- 1:30:43Steve Garvey, the only man to play at every Dodger ball game this year.
- 1:30:46Waits for another, the two-two pitchers chopped to the shortstop.
- 1:30:49Two big hops, Bowe gets a big bill out of it.
- 1:30:51A quick throw to first and Garvey's gone, six to three.
- 1:30:59Today's paid attendance, 63,719.
- 1:31:03That may set a new record. We're going to check it up.
- 1:31:05It's right up there. If it isn't a new record, it's the second highest all-time here at Veteran Stadium.
- 1:31:13Dusty Baker is moving in. He has doubled and singled.
- 1:31:16Score to run has driven in two.
- 1:31:18Right-handed hitter against the right-handed Reid and the delivery.
- 1:31:21Hit high to center field. That'll be a routine play for Gary Maddux.
- 1:31:25Maddux is holding his ground and has it for the second out.
- 1:31:28So Reid goes through the first two batters in the sixth inning, two up and two down.
- 1:31:36All right, here's Rick Mundy stepping in.
- 1:31:38Mundy flies to center field and single to right.
- 1:31:42And on the board, a welcome to CBS Radio Network broadcasters Ralph Keiner and Jerry Coleman.
- 1:31:47And we're certainly delighted to be here.
- 1:31:50This 63,719 falls a couple hundred short of a new all-time record.
- 1:31:58It's the second highest ever.
- 1:32:01They pitch to Rick Mundy, the first one by Ron Reid, low, ball one.
- 1:32:08One and oh, two outs, nobody on, top of the sixth inning, a 3-3 tie.
- 1:32:13This is the game that both clubs figure they have to win.
- 1:32:16The one-oh delivery to Mundy. Swung on a miss, one ball, one strike.
- 1:32:21Rick Mundy has had some severe back problems, but talking to him before the game today, he said,
- 1:32:26I am 100 percent.
- 1:32:29And Mundy so far in the action has not done too badly.
- 1:32:33Got two hits and six trips in the two games that he's played.
- 1:32:37A man hitter, a veteran, started with the Kansas City Athletics and on to the Cubs and now here with the Dodgers.
- 1:32:42The 1-1 pitch and Mundy takes it for strike two.
- 1:32:46And the Dodger bullpen is going full bore right now.
- 1:32:49Charlie Huff, a knuckle baller, and a curve balling Doug Rau from the left side starting to throw.
- 1:32:56The 1-2 pitch to Mundy, fouled off and just off to the right of our booth.
- 1:33:02And my microphone just went dead.
- 1:33:07If my microphone didn't go dead, my earplugs certainly did. I can't hear a thing.
- 1:33:11All right, Rick Mundy now is out there.
- 1:33:14The count of all the two strikes, two down.
- 1:33:19Here's Reeve's delivery and the 1-2 pitch is taken outside.
- 1:33:22Two balls, two strikes. Jim Gilliam coaching at first base.
- 1:33:26And Preston Gomez, a former manager for the San Diego Ponders and the Houston Ashos at third.
- 1:33:31The 2-2 delivery on the move and it's outside making three balls and two strikes.
- 1:33:37Three and two the count.
- 1:33:39Two down, nobody on. Mundy trying to give the Dodgers a start here in the sixth inning.
- 1:33:43Behind him the catcher Steve Yeager.
- 1:33:46The next pitch to Mundy is high for ball four and down to first base goes Rick Mundy.
- 1:33:53So Mundy on with two down here in the sixth inning and the catcher Steve Yeager getting ready to move in.
- 1:34:00The next hitter is the following hitter behind Yeager.
- 1:34:04Gene Garber, slow curveballing right-hander throwing in the Philadelphia bullpen.
- 1:34:10Behind Garber they still have Tug McGraw if they need him so the filly is very rich in bullpen depth.
- 1:34:18Yeager in the ball game is single and had an intentional walk.
- 1:34:22Throw to first base, Mundy is back and the throw to first almost got by Hebner.
- 1:34:28If you missed it today's pay-to-ten at 63,719.
- 1:34:34Another throw to first and Mundy is back again.
- 1:34:41All right Rick Mundy with the lead maybe about eight feet off edging up towards second base.
- 1:34:46Yeager waiting at the plate, a dangerous batter.
- 1:34:49He's not an average hitter but he can hit the long ball every now and then.
- 1:34:51Another throw to first and Mundy gets back again.
- 1:34:58It's a 3-3 tie. We are in the top of the sixth inning.
- 1:35:01Dodgers are batting here at Veterans Stadium in Philadelphia.
- 1:35:07Ron Reed throws the first again fourth time he's gone over there.
- 1:35:11Put pause five seconds for station identification. This is the CBS Radio Network.
- 1:35:16This is the American Forces Radio and Television Service.
- 1:35:20All right Reed with the set delivers ground ball to third deep in the corner.
- 1:35:26The play by Smith to second, they got him.
- 1:35:29An outstanding play by Mike Smith right on the line deep at third base.
- 1:35:33Nails Mundy at second base.
- 1:35:35That one's five to four if you're keeping book with us.
- 1:35:38No runs, no hits and a man left after five and a half.
- 1:35:42Dodgers three, Philadelphia three.
- 1:35:44University of Colorado hopes its rare appearance among the top ten rankings can become a habit.
- 1:35:49Looks to improve its record on Saturday by stopping Oklahoma State's Terry Miller.
- 1:35:54Colorado coach Bill Mallory believes that Miller is the fondest running back in the nation.
- 1:35:58Miller leads the nation's rushers right now with just over 160 yard average in four games.
- 1:36:03He has carried 104 times for 637 yards and six touchdowns.
- 1:36:08Miller's Oklahoma State's low offensive threat though, situation reflected in their two and two record this season.
- 1:36:15Seventh ranked USC by the way will whisk its unbeaten record against once beaten number eight Alabama this weekend.
- 1:36:20Second ranked Michigan will visit old rival Michigan State.
- 1:36:24Number three Oklahoma faces number four Texas and sixth ranked Ohio State takes on Purdue in a big ten battle.
- 1:36:31Other game, seventh ranked Nebraska tackles Kansas State, their big favorites there.
- 1:36:36And number ten California tackles Washington State.
- 1:36:41Pedro Barbon, the Cincinnati Reds eighth release pitcher, pleaded innocent Friday to two assault charges,
- 1:36:46was ordered to appear in court again next Tuesday for a preliminary hearing.
- 1:36:50Barbon's lawyer John J. Kelly Jr. entered innocent pleas on behalf of Barbon at Friday's arraignment in Cincinnati
- 1:36:57before Hamilton County criminal court judge Robert Blackmore.
- 1:37:00Barbon stood silently while the lawyer entered the pleas.
- 1:37:03Barbon released on his own recoginance pending Tuesday's 9 a.m. preliminary hearing,
- 1:37:08later refused to comment to news reporters.
- 1:37:11Also Kelly noted Barbon was under contract to pitch winter ball and today hope further court session would be delayed
- 1:37:17so Barbon could immediately return to his Dominican Republic home.
- 1:37:20Barbon must remain for the preliminary hearing.
- 1:37:24I'd like to remind you that the American League playoff game will be on tonight at 8.07 Eastern Daylight Time with Ed Martin
- 1:37:31along with Ernie Harwell, Yankees against Kansas City in Kansas City.

- 1:37:44It'll be Tommy John against Steve Carlton in that ball game tomorrow night.
- 1:37:49We're all set to go. It's the bottom half of the sixth.
- 1:37:51It's a tie ball game at three and coming back in for the play-by-play, Jerry Combs.
- 1:37:55And Gary Maddux, Bob Boone, and Ted Sizemore going up against Rick Rhoade who has done a brilliant job for the Dodgers.
- 1:38:01He has gone three in the third innings, has not given up a hit, and has walked two.
- 1:38:05The first pitch to Maddux right at the Adam's apple misses inside ball one.
- 1:38:10Gary Maddux in the ball game struck out and he bounced to third.
- 1:38:14Maddux is one of the men that the Phillies like to get on. He's got that big speed. He can run.
- 1:38:20Wide spread stance from the right side waiting, chokes up about an inch and hits one to center field straight away.
- 1:38:25Rick Mundy will have no trouble with this. He's under it, grabs it, and we've got one going here in the bottom of the sixth.
- 1:38:34Gary Maddux on a fairly routine fly ball. The center field is out of there for the first out on the bottom of the sixth.
- 1:38:40And now Bob Boone steps in the catcher. Boone single and fly to center.
- 1:38:46Gene Garber, the right-hander, continues in the Philly bullpen.
- 1:38:50Behind Boone at Sizemore and then Reed.
- 1:38:53Reed will fall in the event that he gets up to hit in this inning.
- 1:38:58They first pitch to Boone, one on a miss, strike one.
- 1:39:02He's three runs, eight hits. The Phillies three runs and only two hits.
- 1:39:08Roden again checking out his catcher, Yeager, and the pitch on the way to Bob Boone.
- 1:39:12It's right in there on the corner. No balls and two strikes.
- 1:39:16Bob, a native of San Diego and the son of a great hitting shortstop third baseman for Cleveland and Detroit, Ray Boone,
- 1:39:23and now scouts for the Boston Red Sox.
- 1:39:26The two-strike pitch to Bob is low and inside. Ball one, strike two.
- 1:39:30It's going to be the toughest thing in the world to follow your father, who was a great major league hitter.
- 1:39:35Ray Boone could hit that ball, did it for many years in the American League, over a dozen.
- 1:39:39And now Bob following in his footsteps. The one-two pitch to Bob, a hard drive center field base hit.
- 1:39:45Bob Boone comes up with a first hit off of Roden and only the third for the Phillies in the ballgame.
- 1:39:51Tim McCarver has moved into the on-deck circle, so he'll be batting for Ron Reid, provided Sizemore doesn't pop into a double play.
- 1:40:06A 3-3 tie. We're in the last half of the sixth inning. Rick Roden blowing on his hand.
- 1:40:15In this type of weather, they'll allow you to do that.
- 1:40:18Normally, you cannot do it. You have to have permission from the umpires.
- 1:40:22A first pitch on the way to Sizemore. It's one-on-a-miss, strike one.
- 1:40:26Ted walked and scored a run in the second inning.
- 1:40:30Then he tried to bunt for a base hit, pushing it out toward second, and Lopes made a fine play to get him.
- 1:40:36Sizemore, a little guy, formally with the Dodgers, waiting.
- 1:40:42Here's Roden's delivery to Ted. It's chopped away on the left side.
- 1:40:47No balls and two strikes.
- 1:40:49Lance Rotson, a left-hander, throwing down on the Dodger bullpen, along with another left-hander, Doug Rowe.
- 1:40:55So Rowe, a more experienced pitcher, one of those cutie kind of guys who try to get you an off-speed stuff and set you up for a fast ball.
- 1:41:05It isn't all that fast, but looks better than it is.
- 1:41:07And Rotson, not a bad throwing left-hander, but a rookie.
- 1:41:12Three-three tie, sixth inning. Phillies have a runner at first base.
- 1:41:17Sizemore apparently broke his bat and is going to get another one, and he comes out to take his shot.
- 1:41:27Roden now checks out his catcher, Steve Yeager.
- 1:41:30Elias Dose now gets up in the Dodger bullpen. They got half the staff throwing down there.
- 1:41:36Here's the two-strike, fix the size more, low and outside, and a good play by Yeager on a ball that was almost a wild pitch.
- 1:41:44Yeager is one of the few catchers who loves his work. He loves exactly what he's doing.
- 1:41:49He likes to catch. He likes the body contact. He likes the hard work.
- 1:41:53He likes to put on the so-called tools of ignorance.
- 1:41:57And believe me, if you can catch and you can throw a Yeager can, you've got a job in the big leagues for 15 years.
- 1:42:03A ball and two strikes. Boone, who is not an overly fast man on a first base, waiting.
- 1:42:09Here's Roden's pitch on the way to size more low this time. Two balls and two strikes.
- 1:42:16Tony Taylor dancing around at first base. He's the coach for the Phillies, yelling out to Bob Boone.
- 1:42:21Two balls, two strikes, one out.
- 1:42:24In a spot like this, some managers will try the hit and run. Let's see what the Phillies do.
- 1:42:30Sizemore waiting, and the throw goes to first base. Roden looking for something.
- 1:42:34Garvey holding against Boone. The infield playing very shallow.
- 1:42:39Sizemore is not a fast man, nor is Boone, but you've got to come in, especially if that man may be going.
- 1:42:46Two balls, two strikes, one down. Roden ready again.
- 1:42:49The pitch to Sizemore is top back on a play into the seat. We're going to go at it again. Two balls and two strikes.
- 1:42:56Sizemore, a one-time rookie of the year, played only one year for the Dodgers before being traded off to the St. Louis Cardinals for Richie Allen.
- 1:43:04Later, the Dodgers got him back and traded him to the Phillies.
- 1:43:08So Sizemore has had a checkered career from a standpoint of continuity with one club, but he's a fine ball player, a heady ball player who knows what to do.
- 1:43:18All right, Roden is again ready. Here's the pitch to Sizemore. Luke Fowl on the right side. That'll reach the seats. No chance for Smith to get to it.
- 1:43:29Lance Rotson and Ilya Sosa throwing down on the Dodger bullpen.
- 1:43:36And Barry Foote, a reserve catcher for the Phillies, is warming up on the bullpen.
- 1:43:44Could be that if there's a move made here, it could be a flip flop by Danny Ozark. We'll have to see how the dust settles.
- 1:43:50But right now, Sizemore, for the count of two balls, two strikes, he's got a runner at first base and one down, bottom of the sixth, a 3-3 tie.
- 1:43:58Here's the pitch. Chopped away Fowl and Sizemore and Roden having some battle out there.
- 1:44:08Well, Roden got the ball and bounced it on the astroturf like it was a basketball and said, hey, let me try another one.
- 1:44:14Baseballs are built to specification, but they're not all the same. And more than likely, a pitcher will get a ball that just doesn't have that feel.
- 1:44:23Maybe the seam doesn't feel right. Maybe it feels heavy in his hand and he'll say, hey, let's try another one until he gets one that he's satisfied with.
- 1:44:31The pitcher can ask for a new ball. The hitter can ask for the umpire to look at the ball, but not for a new one unless the umpire throws it out.
- 1:44:39All right, the Philly fans coming to life again. Sizemore awaits. Here's the pitch by Roden. Ground ball to third and great play by Sze.
- 1:44:48The throw to first, not in time. Great hit.
- 1:44:59Real good backhand play by Ron Sze as he went far to his right side to backhanded in foul territory. His momentum was taking him away from the field.
- 1:45:09He threw over to first base. It was not a hard throw. One out throw to first and Sizemore beat it out.
- 1:45:15So now the Phillies are going to the bench as they have runners at first and second and one man out. Here's a bat in the bottom of the sixth inning.
- 1:45:25Left hand hitting Kim McCarver is coming on. McCarver this year batted three twenty and has a pinch hitter nine for thirty six, which is an even two fifty batting average with a home run of nine RBI.
- 1:45:38A very valuable man.
- 1:45:43And those Philly fans again, I'm sure you can hear them in the background starting to come to life.
- 1:45:50McCarver waits. Here's a pitch filed away. Strike one. McCarver, who is Steve Carlin's special catcher, caught the first ball game and he went one for three with a walk.
- 1:46:02A single and a run score. Left hand batter, the tie breaking run, a second base and the person of Bob Boone, Ted Sizemore at first base. A three three tie, last half of the sixth inning.
- 1:46:18Here's a pitch to McCarver, a tie for a ball, one ball and one strike.
- 1:46:26Kim McCarver, one time St. Louis Cardinals star catcher in their payday. The days of Bob Gibson and company.
- 1:46:37Has that front foot to right but almost on top of the plate. He's waiting. Roden is ready. Here's the delivery as the runners move up and a tie.
- 1:46:45Two balls, one strike.
- 1:46:49Rick Roden now running into a little bit of a rival that fell here. He walked one man in the third inning, got out of it with no trouble. He walked a man in the fifth.
- 1:46:59Got out of it with no trouble but he has fallen behind hitters here in the sixth inning and has given up back to back singles.
- 1:47:06Two balls and one strike to Tim McCarver.
- 1:47:11Bob Boone at second base, Ted Sizemore at first. And now time has fallen.
- 1:47:19As the fans here at Vetsland Stadium start that crescendo, he just stepped off the rubber.
- 1:47:25There they go again.
- 1:47:28The 2-1 pitch is high.
- 1:47:33Three balls, one strike.
- 1:47:42There are 63,719 fans all apparently rooting for the Phillies.
- 1:48:01Here's Roden.
- 1:48:04And the 3-1 delivery. Foul back a full count.
- 1:48:09If Roden can overcome this route, he may quiet these people. But until they do, they're going to keep going.
- 1:48:16The Philadelphia Phillies fan is a very long-waiting fan. They are looking for their first championship ever in baseball.
- 1:48:24They have never been able to win a championship in 1915. They were defeated in the World Series 4-1.
- 1:48:30In 1950, they were defeated 4-0 by the Yankees. And last year in the championship series, they were defeated by the Cincinnati Reds 3-0.
- 1:48:39We've got a 3-2 count. Runners at first and second in one away.
- 1:48:45McCarver batting for Ron Reid is waiting. Here is Roden.
- 1:48:52The pitch fouled away and we're going to do it one more time.
- 1:48:57Danny Ozark with Bob Boone at second base and Sizemore at first did not have his men going.
- 1:49:04Behind McCarver, the left-hand hitting, Bake McBride.
- 1:49:15Absolutely remarkable display here by Philadelphia fans.
- 1:49:22Three balls, two strikes. Roden again, touch. McCarver waits. There go the runners.
- 1:49:28The ball is hit foul on the right side and that's out of reach to Reggie Smith.
- 1:49:33The ball wasn't hit far enough to be of any danger and it's been fair. Smith with a clutter with ease.
- 1:49:39But it was full foul, maybe 25 feet or so into the seats in right field.
- 1:49:44So the count remains three balls and two strikes and Danny Ozark shifted gears that time and he started Boone and Sizemore.
- 1:49:51And now Boone is going to have a chat with Billy Demars, the third base coach.
- 1:49:56Well, you've got to wonder, do they miss the sign the first time or the second time?
- 1:50:02Whatever, Boone wants to know exactly what's going on from Billy Demars, the third base coach.
- 1:50:07We have a quick conversation. Dave Lopes is walking in to talk to Rick Roden.
- 1:50:17Lance Rodson, the left-hander. Elias Sota, the right-hander, continue to throw in the Dodger bullpen.
- 1:50:24A dramatic part of the ball game. Dodger three to Philly speed.
- 1:50:35Roden checking out his catcher, Yeager. McCarver waits.
- 1:50:44An attempt to pick off does not come to life. Roden turned around to throw the second.
- 1:50:51Russell trying to creep in behind Boone, but Roden didn't throw the ball, just stepped off the rubber and held on to it.
- 1:50:57Now Sizemore with a big lead at first. Boone off the second again. McCarver at the plate.
- 1:51:02There they go. Here's the three-two pitch hit high in the air to right field.
- 1:51:06An easy play for Smith. The runners retreat in a hurry as Reggie Smith grabs this for the second out.
- 1:51:12Good job by Roden. Three and two and three pitches with a count of three balls and two strikes in the strike zone.
- 1:51:18The first two found off and he got the third one over and a fly ball for an at the right field.
- 1:51:24Rick Roden is still a very young pitcher. Roden, 24 years old on May the 16th, is only in his second full year as a bigleger.
- 1:51:36He's had about two and a half years in the big leagues and believe me, he's got some ice water in him.
- 1:51:41He came on on the second inning when Burt Houghton was forced out and got Mike Schmidt on one pitch.
- 1:51:46And in trying circumstances has nailed pimp hitter Kim McCarver. Now here's Baked McBride.
- 1:51:53Two down. Runners at first and second. Bottom of the sixth. Three-three tie. McBride from the left side has gone 0-2 in the game.
- 1:52:01And here's the pitch. Inside ball of one. McBride who wears a full beard.
- 1:52:09He was acquired from the St. Louis Cardinals for Tommy Underwood. It's been a big trade for both ball clubs. The Phillies are delighted with it.
- 1:52:18Roden now looking into this catcher. Sizemore at first. Blue in at second. Drifting off.
- 1:52:27The 1-0 pitch to McBride. Hit on the ground at second. Grabbed by Lopes to play the short. At second base it's Russell. He's got it.
- 1:52:35And that takes care of the Philadelphia Phillies in here in the sixth inning as Baked McBride forces Ted Sizemore at second base.
- 1:52:43For the Phillies, no runs. A couple of base hits and two men left. We go to the seventh. It's all even. Dodgers three. Philadelphia three.
- 1:52:51Al McGray, one of the key players in the Kansas City Royals, will be inducted into the Florida A&M University Sports Hall of Fame November 18th.
- 1:52:59McGray played baseball for the Rattlers in 1964 and 65, hitting 364 and 353 with 16 homers his first year and 19 his second.
- 1:53:10Other members of the FAMU Hall of Fame include tennis star Althea Gibson, former professional football players Bob Hayes and Willie Gallimore, and Jay Gaither.
- 1:53:21Well in the regular season these two teams played 12 times and each team won six games and each team won in their home area, winning four and losing two.
- 1:53:31And the first two games of the series split so this ballgame died at three so it couldn't be more even.
- 1:53:37And it's been an exciting series so far in this ballgame, a wild ballgame, as far as the improvement of the fans in the stands have had a great influence on what has taken place.
- 1:53:47In the second inning, after Greg Luzinski had singled the left field, Richie Hebner ground it into a foresprey, Hebner at first base and Luzinski out.
- 1:53:55Then with two men out, Bob Boone singles the center fielder for the runners at first and second.
- 1:53:59Ted Sizemore walked in four pitches to load the bases and then Larry Christensen came up and the crowd got into it and they just started to roar.
- 1:54:07Bert Hootin on the mound at the time, walked Larry Christensen on a free-two pitch after he thought he had him struck out.
- 1:54:12He did not like the call by Harry Lindelstad, the home plate umpire. Then he walked Bates McBride and followed with a walk to Larry Ball, a fourth in free run.
- 1:54:21So he's leading by that time by a score of three to two after the Dodgers had scored in the second, scoring twice and singles by Garvey, a double by Dusty Baker and a single by Steve Baker and a double by Bert Hootin.
- 1:54:32But then the Dodgers tied it up with a run on the top of the fourth inning to make it a three-three ballgame, a double by Ron Say and he was driven in by Dusty Baker.
- 1:54:40So we're going down to the top of the seventh, a new pitch in the ballgame for the Philadelphia Phillies and here to tell you about it, Jerry Coleman.
- 1:54:47Okay, the five-foot, ten-inch right-hander Gene Garber comes on and he was in that winning game, won by the Phillies seven to five over the Dodgers in the first one.
- 1:54:55He went one and a third innings, did not give up a hit or a run.
- 1:54:59Over the season, pitched in 64 ballgames and the first man that he's going to face, Ed Goodson.
- 1:55:07He's pinch hitting for Rick Rodin, so Goodson is up there from the left side, he takes strike one.
- 1:55:12Next one on the way to Goodson, swung on a miss, strike two, so Garber, who pulls that string nicely, has moved well ahead of Ed Goodson.
- 1:55:22Goodson has been used sparingly by the Dodgers, primarily as a pinch hitter.
- 1:55:27The two-strike pitch coming up, a chopper toward the second baseman, Sizemore, who is way back, comes in and makes the underhand toss to Hevner and Goodson is out of there.
- 1:55:36That play goes four to three.
- 1:55:38Goodson was acquired along with Dusty Baker from the Atlanta Braves.
- 1:55:42So Goodson's out and that'll bring on the lead man, Davey Lopes.
- 1:55:45And this is the guy in a game like this, you try to keep off the bases.
- 1:55:49He led the National League and stolen bases the last couple of years.
- 1:55:52This year, he had 47 of them.
- 1:55:57His overall high, 77 two years ago.
- 1:56:00Dave Lopes, right-hand batter, three-three tie, seventh inning.
- 1:56:03Garber's pitch to Lopes, sinker low and inside ball one.
- 1:56:12Lopes from the right side choking up and Garber delivers a curve that got the corner, one ball, one strike.
- 1:56:18Doug Rowe, left-hander throwing for the Dodgers in the bullpen right now.
- 1:56:23Here's Lopes and he takes it away outside for two balls and one strike.
- 1:56:29They spread the infield on them, Bowe in the hole at shortstop, Sizemore moves over into the hole at second and deep.
- 1:56:35Right on that line at third base is Schmidt.
- 1:56:37The 2-1 pitch to Lopes, the chopper to the shortstop.
- 1:56:40Bowe had him played perfectly and Lopes is out of there six to three.
- 1:56:45Two up and two down, seventh inning.
- 1:56:50Now Bill Russell the batter.
- 1:56:51Russell lined the second base, topped up the third and doubled with one out of the fifth inning.
- 1:56:56But right after that Ron Reed struck out Smith and Say to get out of that inning with no further problems.
- 1:57:04Bill Russell waiting and the first pitch to Bill.
- 1:57:07Right down there's strike one.
- 1:57:08Russell's off the end of the bat, maybe two or three inches.
- 1:57:12Bill was a dependable hitter and is very tough on the clutch.
- 1:57:15The next one by Garber, in the dirt off the bat of Russell apparently.
- 1:57:21Looks like a foul tip and it goes no ball, two strikes.
- 1:57:31All right, Garber's ready and Russell takes outside.
- 1:57:35The board has one and two.
- 1:57:36The last pitch before this one hit the dirt, apparently hitting the tip of Russell's bat and bouncing away from the catcher.
- 1:57:43Now the one-two pitch on the way, sidearm curveball, chopped to the third baseman.
- 1:57:47Mike Schmidt over to first just in time and he's got him.
- 1:57:50So Garber has been outstanding in relief.
- 1:57:53One, two, three here in the seventh inning.
- 1:57:56We go to the last of the seventh, Dodgers three, Philadelphia three.
- 1:58:01Getting back to that Hal McRae story, we mentioned one of key players on the Royals team.
- 1:58:06They're hoping to play tonight at Kansas City at the Reims holdup against the Yankees in game three all tied up 1-1.
- 1:58:11He will be entering the Florida A&M University Sports Hall the same November the 18th.
- 1:58:15We mentioned some of the people will also be going.
- 1:58:18We briefly mentioned Jake Gaither.
- 1:58:20He's a legendary football coach who compiled a 203-36 record while coaching the Rattlers.
- 1:58:26Costa Kettles, McRae's baseball coach at FAMU, said he saw the Kansas City star in spring training about a year ago.
- 1:58:32McRae's attitude toward baseball, he said, hasn't changed.
- 1:58:35He still loves baseball.
- 1:58:36It was number one to him then and still is now.
- 1:58:39He always has been a fine young man.
- 1:58:41Kettles also an assistant football coach.
- 1:58:43Watched McRae on television Wednesday evening break up a double play.
- 1:58:46Knocking the ball out of the hands of Yankee second baseman Willie Randolph.
- 1:58:50The play grew the rage of New York manager Billy Martin who accused McRae of interference.
- 1:59:01Well the attendance here today, 63,719, the second largest crowd ever at Veterans Stadium.
- 1:59:07First two games drew 111,941.
- 1:59:10So the total attendance for the first three games, 175,660.
- 1:59:15So it has been a well observed pregame series so far.
- 1:59:21And now the Philadelphia Phillies making a bid as they come to bat here in the bottom of the seventh inning.
- 1:59:26And a new pitcher in for the Dodgers, Doug Rowe with a record of 14-8, a 3.44 earned run average.
- 1:59:32He did not appear in relief all season long.
- 1:59:34Rick Rode, going out of the ball game, did not relieve all season long.
- 1:59:38Had a record of 16-10.
- 1:59:39And in this ball game in his first relief appearance, he worked four and a third.
- 1:59:43And he's giving up no runs on just two base hits.
- 1:59:46So Doug Rowe, a left hander in the game and coming back to call the play-by-play, Jerry Coleman.
- 1:59:52You know Ralph, when you think about a relief pitcher, you think of a guy who can throw the ball hard.
- 1:59:57And Gene Garber and Doug Rowe are just the opposite of that.
- 2:00:00They're cuties. They move the ball around.
- 2:00:03Doug Rowe coming on.
- 2:00:05All right, the left hand pitcher going up against the switch hitting Lara Boa batting from the right side.
- 2:00:18Boa is 0-2 in the ball game.
- 2:00:20We're in the bottom of the seventh all even at three.
- 2:00:27Doug Rowe is ready and a pitch on the way to Boa.
- 2:00:30It's in the dirt. A curve ball low for ball one.
- 2:00:33Dodgers three runs, eight hits. The Phillies three runs, four hits.
- 2:00:37Dodgers got two in the first and one in the fourth.
- 2:00:39The Phillies got all of theirs in the second inning on four consecutive walks by Burt Huston.
- 2:00:46The 1-0 pitch now to Boa is popped up in the infield calling forward as Dave Lopes.
- 2:00:51Second baseman drips under and puts it away for the first out of the seventh.
- 2:00:56So we have one gone as Mike Schmidt comes in.
- 2:01:03Schmidt a right hand batter with big power.
- 2:01:0638 home runs this year.
- 2:01:08In the series though is having a struggle.
- 2:01:11He has won for 11 with a base on ball.
- 2:01:19A 3-3 tie, the big gun. Schmidt at the plate in the on deck circle, Greg Lozinski.
- 2:01:27A first pitch to Schmidt is a breaking ball low and inside, ball one.
- 2:01:31Doug Rowe tries to set you up with that slow curve ball then he'll slip the fastball by it.
- 2:01:43Now Rowe checks his catcher. Outfield swung out to the left
- 2:01:46and Schmidt takes a change up on the outside corner for a strike.
- 2:01:50A year ago Doug Rowe had an average of 2.57.
- 2:01:54In fact he went into the final game of the year with a chance to win the ERA and fell to pieces and lost it.
- 2:02:01Here's the 1-1 pitch. Schmidt chops it to third.
- 2:02:04Stay right on the line. A throw across the diamond. Schmidt has gone 5-3.
- 2:02:11And Greg Lozinski steps in two down, nobody on last half of the seventh.
- 2:02:22Lozinski, right hand hitter up against the left handed Rowe who has handled Bowe and Schmidt with ease.
- 2:02:32Here's the first pitch to the Bowe, swung on a missed strike one.
- 2:02:36The Phillies have not really played much with that bat today, they've got four hits.
- 2:02:41But all of their runs, as we mentioned earlier, came in the second on four consecutive walks by the starter Bert Hooten.
- 2:02:50A one strike pitch to Greg is outside. One ball, one strike.
- 2:02:59Outfield, infield swung way off and the infield way back at all three spots, second, short and third.
- 2:03:04First baseman Garvey about straight away. The 1-1 pitch to Greg, he went after the change up and missed it.
- 2:03:09A ball and two strikes. Elias Sosa, right hander throwing in the Dodger bullpen.
- 2:03:17The Phillies have one more big bullpen star to come in if they need them.
- 2:03:22Todd McGraw, left hander. Dodgers are using starting pitchers in their bullpen with the exception of Sosa.
- 2:03:29They got four and a third brilliant innings from Rick Roden. Now they're getting one from Doug Rowe.
- 2:03:34And there's a foul at the plate off the bat of Leszczynski. The count stays at a ball and two strikes.
- 2:03:46Now Rowe walks around. He's out of Texas. Very trim athlete.
- 2:03:56Schekz Jager. They pitch on the way, low and in the dirt. Two balls and two strikes.
- 2:04:03Rowe this year won 14 ball games and lost eight.
- 2:04:09The winningest pitcher for the Dodgers was an unlikely choice if you talked about it before the season started.
- 2:04:15Tommy John who was coming off of arm surgery a couple years ago and won only 10 games a year ago.
- 2:04:20He went on to win 20 this year and Steve Farrell will battle again tomorrow night.
- 2:04:26Here's a 2-2 pitch to Leszczynski and he struck him out. He zipped the fastball right by and Leszczynski does down swinging.
- 2:04:32The Phillies are out of there one, two, three. We've gone through seven innings. Dodgers three, Phillies three.
- 2:04:41Well, Tom Lesot in his first year as manager of the Dodgers has done quite a job.
- 2:04:45He was in the Dodger organization what it seemed like forever. He once had a team that lost seven in a row.
- 2:04:50And then they had a turnaround and went on to be the champions. And he asked his wife, was asked by his wife how he did it.
- 2:04:57And he said, well, I said we lost the seven straight games and our team came in with their heads down.
- 2:05:01And I said, get your heads up. Don't ever let me see you with your heads down.
- 2:05:05How do you know that the 1927 Yankees once lost nine in a row then went on to become the world's champions and maybe the greatest team ever?
- 2:05:13And then with that in mind Lesota seemed on to win.
- 2:05:16After listening to this, Mr. Lesota said, Tom, did the Yankees really lose nine in a row in 1927?
- 2:05:22And Tom replied, how should I know? I was only one year old at the time.
- 2:05:26Well, that's the kind of a manager that Tom Lesota is. He says, I'm just the luckiest man in the world.
- 2:05:30I'm a first year manager, a beat up third string pitcher and the son of an Italian immigrant. And I got this kind of a team.
- 2:05:38We're going out of the top of the eighth, the Phillies tied up with the Dodgers at 3-3.
- 2:05:46A big crowd on hand. The Dodgers led 2-0 after one and a half. The Phillies led 3-2 after two.
- 2:05:51The Dodgers tied it in the fourth and they have not put a run on the scoreboard since.
- 2:05:55So here in the top of the eighth inning, the Dodgers coming up and once again, Jerry Coleman.
- 2:05:59You know, Ralph, I enjoyed the story about Tommy Lesota and the 1927 Yankees losing nine in a row.
- 2:06:05And there's one that you can really talk about even later than that.
- 2:06:09In 1953, the Yankees won 18 straight and then turned around and lost nine in a row.
- 2:06:15That's hard to do when you think about it.
- 2:06:17Baseball is a game that you really don't know a lot about. It's a game of inches.
- 2:06:21And it was a matter of a fraction of an inch as far as bird hooting the starting pitcher is concerned.
- 2:06:27So here's a guy who has been shackled all afternoon for the Dodgers, but he's a man you've got to be careful with.
- 2:06:33It's Reggie Smith. He has struck out three times in three trips.
- 2:06:36And Garber's first pitch, hard ground ball to second. Sizemore has it and Smith is out of there.
- 2:06:41So Garber once again gets his man, the play going 4-3.
- 2:06:50Ron says the batter bounced a third, doubled and he struck out.
- 2:06:54Gene Garber is one of those fellows who had to work hard to get where he got.
- 2:06:58He started with the Pittsburgh Pirates, on to the Kansas City A's, then to the Phillies in 74 and make that the Kansas City Royals.
- 2:07:07And he has really struggled to get where he got and he's become one of the best relief pitchers in baseball.
- 2:07:12The first pitch to say is outside for ball one. Outfield swung way off to the left.
- 2:07:16The say awaits the next one. Ground ball to third, Smith over there on the line, a long throw. He's got it.
- 2:07:24Mike Smith once again shows that he can do it all.
- 2:07:30So say is out. He hit a blistering ground ball. Smith actually caught the ball in foul territory.
- 2:07:36And that long throw across the diamond had to carry about 130 feet. It was on the money.
- 2:07:41Say is cut down for the second out. And in the eighth inning the Dodgers have two down, nobody on with Steve Garvey stepping in.
- 2:07:49Garvey won for three in this ball game. He has four for ten in the series.
- 2:07:54They asked Garvey to go for power this year. He did. 33 home runs, 115 RBIs.
- 2:08:00He led the club, but he sacrificed his regular season of 200 base hits, something he's had the last three years before this one.
- 2:08:07He didn't get to the 200 base hit department this year.
- 2:08:11Garvey came up with 192 hits, so he fell eight shy.
- 2:08:15The first pitch is fouled off by Steve for strike one.
- 2:08:19Garber to Garvey outside, one ball, one strike. Two down, nobody on. Eighth inning, 3-3 tie.
- 2:08:25And this is the kind of a ball game where any little thing can turn it around.
- 2:08:29Here's the 1-1 pitch, and now Garvey steps out and asks for time and he gets it from the plate umpire Harry Wendelstadt.
- 2:08:36Here's the 1-1 pitch to Steve, swung on a miss by Garvey for strike two, a ball and two strikes.
- 2:08:43Garvey was the first Dodger ever to have three consecutive years of 200 base hits.
- 2:08:50Now the one ball, two strikes pitch to Garvey. Ground ball, shortstop bow a little bit to his left, easy play and he's got him at first.
- 2:08:58So once again, Gene Garber has been brilliant requiring the Dodgers in order in the eighth.
- 2:09:03After seven and a half, Dodgers three, the Phillies three.
- 2:09:07Boston Celtics convinced that veteran Dave Bing can help them this season, trimmed backcourt players Mike Dabney and Bill Langlo on Friday bringing their roster to 13 players.
- 2:09:18Dabney, a former Rutgers star from East Orange, New Jersey, had been a free agent.
- 2:09:23While Langlo, a fifth round draft choice, University of Virginia, was the Celtics' fifth round choice.
- 2:09:28The fair had been battling to fill a fourth guard spot on the squad until Boston signed Bing last week.
- 2:09:35The 24-year-old Bing, who left the Washington Bullets because he was not being played in key situations, scored 14 points against his former team Thursday in the Celtics' 118 to 115 loss.
- 2:09:47The Celtics now two and two in exhibition play heading into a Saturday evening game against the Knicks in New York.
- 2:09:53Must make two more roster cuts before they open the regular season, October 19th in San Antonio.
- 2:10:00Again, we have nothing official yet on the Yankee at Royals game tonight.
- 2:10:06A lot of rain, 80% chance of rain.
- 2:10:09They are trying to square off in the third game with a best of five.
- 2:10:13After Ron Guidry pitched the Yankees to a 6-2 win of the Royals last night, Mike Torres expected to go for the Yankees against the 20-game winner Dennis Leonard.
- 2:10:24It started raining, as we said earlier, on Thursday night in Kansas City. Forecasters now say the rains will continue into the evening hours before dwindling late in the evening, but not in time for the start of the ballgame.
- 2:10:40Eight teams so far in this game have had 10 men on base. The Dodgers had three runs on eight hits and two walks.
- 2:10:46The Phillies have had three runs, four hits, and six walks in the ballgame.
- 2:10:50Rawa has left the game after retiring three in a row. He pitched to Mike Schmidt and Greg Luzinski, and I'm wondering the reason why he was brought in was that he has that ball to turn over a screwball that is tough for a right-hand batter.
- 2:11:05Rawa left-hand pitcher just affixed to Schmidt and Luzinski. He got them both out, and now it's Elias Sosa coming in the ballgame, a right-hander that worked the Richie Hebner, Gary Maddox, and Bob Boone.
- 2:11:15And once again, here's Jerry Coleman. And Elias Sosa, the man who was the victim of the first game loss by the Dodgers in that game, he went two and gave up three hits, a couple of runs, and that final run came in when he balked it in.
- 2:11:30So Elias Sosa is coming on against Richie Hebner, Gary Maddox, and Bob Boone. Sosa becomes the fourth Dodger pitcher and the eighth overall in the ballgame.
- 2:11:39The Phillies have used four, the Dodgers now have four of them in there. Richie Hebner, bounce the second, fly the center, and fly the right field.
- 2:11:48Sosa from the Dominican Republic, a right-hander, six-two, and he's ready with the first one. Here it is, Hebner, hooks it, foul.
- 2:11:57He got out in front of a slider and pulled it about 30 feet foul on the line, strike one.
- 2:12:02Dodgers three runs, eight hits, no errors. The Phillies three runs, four hits, and no errors.
- 2:12:10Reggie Smith, well over toward the line and right field, as Hebner waits. Here's the pitch by Sosa, and it's outside. One ball, one strike.
- 2:12:20Hebner will take almost a completely wide-open stance against the left-hander, against the right-hander, he'll close it a great deal more.
- 2:12:28The one-one pitch. Hebner hits it hard to right field, way back there, it's up, off the wall. Hebner is racing for second, and he's got a double.
- 2:12:59Well, there was no doubt about the ball being an extra base hit. The doubt was whether or not it would stay in the ballpark as far as the Dodgers are concerned, and it hit off of the wall.
- 2:13:10Reggie Smith, Smith fielded the ball perfectly out there and threw it into second base, but over the head of the second baseman, and Hebner joined him with a double.
- 2:13:19And that could be the break in the ballgame as far as the Phillies are concerned. They've got a man at second base, nobody out, and that represents the potential winning run.
- 2:13:28Gary Maddux, who struck out and bounced the third and flied to center, is coming in, and now Red Adams, the pitching coach for the Dodgers, is on his way to the mound.
- 2:13:37Lance Rotson is throwing in the bullpen.
- 2:13:41Now Red Adams and Steve Yeager are having a chat out there.
- 2:13:50Mike Garman is out there as well. Lance Rotson and Mike Garman. Mike Garman, the right-hander, Rotson, the left-hander.
- 2:13:58And you have to believe that if they use Rotson, it'll be in a select situation against a left-hand hitter if one comes along.
- 2:14:06All right, Gary Maddux now. His job is to get the runner to third base any way that he can. Let's see what happens.
- 2:14:15Elias Doster at the set. Maddux waits and hits it to the right side of base hit. Here comes Webner. The throw to the plate. No good, and into the Dodger dugout.
- 2:14:45The Phillies have taken the lead, and over at third base is Gary Maddux with nobody out, and Bob Boone is moving in.
- 2:15:05It was the speed of Maddux that got him to third. He got the base that he was going to, which was second, and an extra base after it when the ball went in the dugout.
- 2:15:17And you take it from the time the ball leaves the outfielder's hand. So Maddux has passed first base, went Smith through the ball wildly into the dugout.
- 2:15:28It's four to three Philadelphia, bottom of the eighth. Both are kicked with the infield in, and there's a pitch out. It's outside, ball one.
- 2:15:39That sometimes can be a very tough play for the umpire. It's when the outfielder releases the ball that the runner will be awarded bases.
- 2:15:49And Maddux with good speed on a low hit ball, very slow hit ball on the right field, had passed first base when Smith released the ball. It went into the dugout, so Maddux got second, the base he was going to, and one additional base.
- 2:16:03One away. Bob Boone the batter, nobody out. Four to three Philadelphia, eighth inning. A ground ball to say it's third. Maddux is frozen right there. The throw is wide!
- 2:16:14An error by Longstay! Bob Boone down to second base on a throwing error by Longstay!
- 2:16:34Two cross of the errors by the Dodgers defense, normally an outstanding defense, and the Philadelphia Phillies getting an extra run and now leading by a score of five to three, and the runners still in scoring position with no one out.
- 2:16:50That was a routine play, and say simply Miss Garvey threw it over his head by five feet. So Bob Boone down to second, and now here's Ted Thiesmorer coming on. Still nobody out. Phillies lead by two.
- 2:17:08They pitch to Thiesmorer, he squares the bunk, takes it for a strike. A breaking ball, he tried to duck under, thought it might have been high. So the Phillies have broken it wide open here in the eighth inning. They lead it five to three.
- 2:17:22Elias Sosa gave up a double to Hebner. A single to Maddux, a throwing error by the right fielder got Maddux to third, and now an error by the third baseman. That ball inside, inside more takes than one and one.
- 2:17:38In the first ball game won by the Phillies seven to five, the Phillies got four unearned runs and one came in on a box. And in this ball game here, errors have certainly helped the cause. Not only that, those four successive walks by Burt Houghton were disastrous.
- 2:17:56The one-one pitch to Thiesmorer chopped away left side.
- 2:18:02As the ball goes raw, left-hander continues to throw in the bullpen for Philadelphia. Gene Garber is the following hitter behind Thiesmorer.
- 2:18:15Thiesmorer's walk, tried to bun a ball for a base hit, was thrown out by Lopes and then had an infield single.
- 2:18:23Thiesmorer's bun, a second base with the lead. Thiesmorer's waiting. Here is Sosa's delivery. And it's fouled off his foot and he's got, oh that hurts. I can feel it from here.
- 2:18:32Ralph, did you do that much? Some hitters do it all the time, some never do it. How about you?
- 2:18:36No, I didn't. And I know one that did it an awful lot, Vic Wurzer, who was an outstanding home run hitter. He used to have to wear a little protective shin guard down there to protect his front foot.
- 2:18:46Well in his latter years, Ted Williams had the same problem. He wore that little, sort of the bottom end of the catcher's shin guard to protect that right foot in his case.
- 2:19:02Alright, Thiesmorer now is trying to get the effects of that foul off that left foot to go away.
- 2:19:08I had a roommate, George Metkovich, Catfish Metkovich, and we were out at a swimming pool one time and someone said, George, you sure got fine looking feet. And he said, yours would look as bad as mine if you fouled as many balls off your feet as I did.
- 2:19:19He wasn't a bad hitter. He came over to the White Sox later and had some pretty good years.
- 2:19:25Alright, Thiesmorer's back in there. They count as a ball and two strikes. Nobody out. Two runs across. Bob Boone at second base. 5-3 Philadelphia last half of the eighth inning.
- 2:19:41So, the right hander's ready. He's at the set. Here's the pitch and Thiesmorer drills one. One hop to third. Say has it. The throw this time is good and holding at second base is Bob Boone. Bob Boone has to hold at second as Thiesmorer hits a one hop for the third baseman, Ron Say.
- 2:19:58The play goes 5-3. Now Gene Garber is going to come up and do his thing.
- 2:20:10And Garber's getting a standing ovation by the fans here at the veteran's stadium in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
- 2:20:21Garber is an excellent relief hitter, but not much of a hitter. He has gone 0-10 for the year. Looking for his first hit of 77.
- 2:20:30Infield, shallow. The outfield the same. Say tight at third. Garber at first. Boone drifting off at second base. One down. And Garber squares the bun and he does, but it's foul on the third base side.
- 2:20:45Well, if you just tuned in, we went into the bottom of the eighth inning tied at three. Sosa came in for the Dodgers. He served up a booming double off the wall to Richie Hebner. Gary Maddux hit a low single into right field. The ball was thrown away by the right fielder.
- 2:21:00Maddux all the way to third. Hebner into score. And now Garber squares the bun. It's on the right side. Sosa has to make the play to first and the sacrifice is good. So the sacrifice, 1-3.
- 2:21:15Garber gets Boone over to third base with two down and that'll bring on the top of the order, Bakes McBride. Right after Maddux went to third base on a throwing error by the right fielder, Reggie Smith, Bob Boone hit a routine ground ball to third and stay through it away for the second run.
- 2:21:36And now Tommy LaStorda goes out there and that's all for Elias Sosa.
- 2:21:46Left-hander Lance Roxton is coming on.
- 2:21:52So Roxton making his first appearance in this series.
- 2:21:56Coming in there and he'll be going up against the left-hander hitting Bakes McBride. Ralph, just want to take a minute now to remind you fans that there's lots more baseball excitement for you on most of these stations.
- 2:22:06The World Series of course starting October 11th, CBS Radio Sports will bring you all the play-by-play action as the two-league winners fight it out for the World Championship.
- 2:22:16We need not miss this, not a single game, take along a portable wherever you go and follow the World Series over most of these CBS Radio Network stations.
- 2:22:29Left-hander Lance Roxton in possibly one of the most exciting games we've had in the series, although we certainly had a downy in that first game that's coming on.
- 2:22:37He's a young man out of Potsville, Pennsylvania not too far from here. 6'1", 205 pounder. A rookie left-hander stepping in there and in his rookie year he went 4-1 with a 4.29 earned run average.
- 2:22:52Roxton did not start a ball game, appeared in 25 games in relief and this is number 26 of 1977 for the Dodgers.
- 2:23:03Now Lance Roxton going up against the left-hand hitting Baik McBride as manager Tommy Lasorda goes for the percentages. Let's see how it develops.
- 2:23:11At third base you've got Baboon and if you're in that infield for the Dodgers and Baik McBride is up there, you've got to be ready for the possibility of a bunt.
- 2:23:20McBride from the left side, Roxton is ready and the pitch is low, ball one.
- 2:23:29Phillies 5, Dodgers 3, last of the eighth inning. McBride today is 0-3, 4-12 in the series.
- 2:23:39They 1-0 pitch and he takes it outside, two balls no strikes. Roxton was 1-1 against the Phillies this year.
- 2:23:51Rautezhan, Lance Roxton, they 2-0 pitch and McBride fouls back on the screen, two balls and a strike.
- 2:24:04A double and a couple of key errors have activated the Phillies although the base hit by Gary Maddux got Hebner in clean but it was after that that the errors started to develop.
- 2:24:14Here's a 2-1 pitch, a chopper, throw the shortstop, stay in front of, bare hands with a thrill, in time, an eyelash play at first base.
- 2:24:21McBride is out of there 5-3, the Phillies pick up two runs on a couple of hits, two errors and a man left.
- 2:24:28We go to the ninth inning, Philadelphia 5, Los Angeles 3.
- 2:24:34World Driving Champion, Nicky Lara, disregarded the Pleased Friday of Ferrari team manager, Roberto Nassetti, refused to reverse his decision to skip Sunday's Grand Prix of Canada Auto Race.
- 2:24:45Nassetti said that I tried to talk him into racing, he just didn't want to race, there was absolutely no reason for him not to race.
- 2:24:51The Austrian driver telephoned his decision to the Ferrari factory on Friday morning.
- 2:24:56Lara who has been feuding with Ferrari since the Austrian announced he had switched to Brabham in 1978, squinched the World Championship last Sunday when he finished fourth in the US Grand Prix at Watkins Glen, New York.
- 2:25:08Lara said earlier this week he would withdraw if he was not satisfied with his car's preparation after qualifying sessions at Mossport, Ontario, Friday and Saturday.
- 2:25:18But the Ferrari team's announcement Friday said Lara decided to quit after spending the night considering his position.
- 2:25:25Lara thought it was not at the track and could not be contacted for comment.

- 2:26:03The zip is 9-4-1-0-1, 9-4-1-0-1.
- 2:26:08The proceeding has been brought to you on behalf of Major League Baseball.
- 2:26:11All the Dodgers are down to their last three outs as Dusty Baker's the lead off and here to take you along the way, Jerry Coleman.
- 2:26:18And the moment of truth for both the Phillies and the Dodgers.
- 2:26:21This is the key ball game and the best three of five.
- 2:26:23The winner of this will go into the final two needing only one of those two.
- 2:26:27Dusty Baker, Rick Mundy and Steve Gag are going up against Gene Garber who in two efforts has retired ten Dodgers in order.
- 2:26:37Eight of them have been on ground balls and two strikeouts.
- 2:26:40He has been letter perfect and now Dusty Baker who has two for three steps in.
- 2:26:44Garber's first pitch curve ball, one on a miss, strike one.
- 2:26:48Phillies five runs, six hits, no errors.
- 2:26:51The Dodgers three runs, eight hits and two errors.
- 2:26:54Garber winds again and the delivery and Baker files it away for strike two.
- 2:27:02Dusty Baker trying to get the Dodgers back into this ball game tomorrow night at Steve Carlin and Tommy John in a repeat of the first game starting pitchers.
- 2:27:16Now time is called as the ball loose in right field area and the right field umpire Bob Engel goes out and picks it up.
- 2:27:25Tug McGraw throwing in the bullpen for Philadelphia.
- 2:27:29Garber came on on the seventh, retired the side in order in the seventh and eighth.
- 2:27:34There's a foul away. This one over toward the box that has Peter O'Malley, the Dodger president in it.
- 2:27:41These cannot be happy moments for him.
- 2:27:43No ball, two strikes, nobody out.
- 2:27:45Baker, Mundy, Yeager, three hitters to go against Garber in the night.
- 2:27:50A chop and a third, Schmidt on a half hop, gets the short hop, makes the play, he's got him.
- 2:27:55An excellent reaction play by Mike Schmidt.
- 2:28:10On a tough hop, he came in and short hopped it and man I'll tell you he made the big play to get that first out and that's the one they wanted.
- 2:28:20Now here is Rick Mundy stepping in, a singled walk fly to center field.
- 2:28:25Garber has had seven outs all to the infield.
- 2:28:29Nobody's hit the ball in the air yet.
- 2:28:31A brilliant job by the right hander.
- 2:28:33There's a sinker low to Rick Mundy, ball one.
- 2:28:38Now Bob Boone goes out to have a chat with his pitcher.
- 2:28:42They kind of have a split defense on Mundy.
- 2:28:44The outfield goes to the left side, the infield to the right side.
- 2:28:48They figure if he hits the ball in the air it will go to left center.
- 2:28:51On the ground it will be pulled to the right side and Sizemore, the second baseman, is about six to eight feet behind the imaginary line that would normally dictate the outfield grass.
- 2:29:03Garber, a little guy out of Pennsylvania, pitching brilliantly.
- 2:29:07Into the wind up.
- 2:29:08The 1-0 pitch to Mundy, ground ball to second, Sizemore, hits on it, two outs.
- 2:29:20So Ralph Keiner, I don't know what more he could ask for than a pitching exhibition by Gene Garber.
- 2:29:25It's been unbelievable as Vic D'Avalio comes in, the out of basket Steve Yeager.
- 2:29:29No question about Garber having command right here and of course it's down to one.
- 2:29:34Vic D'Avalio who was brought in from the Mexican league who finished up the season with the Dodgers has the only hope of keeping it going right now.
- 2:29:43The Dodgers are down to their final outback, left hand hitting Vic D'Avalio, swings it to first round, misses, right one.
- 2:29:52D'Avalio has been in the Mexican league the last three years, a veteran near 40 years of age.
- 2:29:58He was a big star in the American league with Chicago and Cleveland for many years.
- 2:30:01There's a dribbler hits to the second baseman and no chance for Sizemore to make a play and on it first base with a single is D'Avalio.
- 2:30:11D'Avalio laying down a beautiful bunch single in front of Ted Sizemore comes up with a first hit off of Garber since coming on in this ball game.
- 2:30:24And now Manny Moda, considered by many to be one of the finest pinch hitters ever with a lifetime batting average of over 300 is up there.
- 2:30:32Moda coming on, he'll be batting for Lance Roxton.
- 2:30:37So D'Avalio with a bunch single keeps it going for the Dodgers.
- 2:30:46All right, Manny Moda, right hand batter.
- 2:30:52Moda and his first appearance in the series, about at 395 this year.
- 2:30:57Waits for the first one and this one is on the corner first strike.
- 2:31:03Moda as a pinch hitter was 14 for 36.
- 2:31:09D'Avalio at first, two down.
- 2:31:14Had a pinch hit home run in the last game of the season for the Dodgers, his first is 1975.
- 2:31:19Moda swings at Mitchell's strike two.
- 2:31:33The drama continues here at Veterans Stadium in Philadelphia.
- 2:31:40No ball, two strikes.
- 2:31:43Here's the pitch to Moda.
- 2:31:45The left field, going back is Luzinski near the wall.
- 2:31:49And he didn't catch it, it's off the wall.
- 2:31:53Runners are second and third.
- 2:31:55The ball gets away from Sizemore.
- 2:31:57One runner's in and the time run is at third.
- 2:32:00Oh man, oh man, can you believe it?
- 2:32:05Luzinski trapped the ball against the wall and caught it when it came down.
- 2:32:11The left field umpire Paul Pryor said no catch.
- 2:32:17How do you like that Ralph Carter?
- 2:32:19Ball was in his glove, bounced out of the glove, hit against the wall and then Luzinski caught it.
- 2:32:24And Paul Pryor on the play said it was off of the wall and it will be an extra base hit.
- 2:32:30The ball got away and a run scored and now the time run is at third base.
- 2:32:34And the batter coming up is Davy Lopes.
- 2:32:37The Dodgers are battling back.
- 2:32:39There was a double for Moda.
- 2:32:41I'm sure that the left fielder Luzinski will be hung with an error on the play.
- 2:32:46The time run at third, two down.
- 2:32:50A pitch coming out there and it's off the ground.
- 2:32:53It's yet to ball up.
- 2:32:54He makes the play.
- 2:32:56He scores the first.
- 2:32:57A tie ball game.
- 2:32:58A tie ball game.
- 2:33:06What a play.
- 2:33:10Schmidt had been the human vacuum cleaner at third all through the ball game making spectacular plays.
- 2:33:17The ball was off of his glove.
- 2:33:19Ball quickly got to it.
- 2:33:20The throw to first base by Ball was close.
- 2:33:23The safe call was made by first base umpire Bruce Bromance.
- 2:33:27And then the argument started because the time run crossed on the safe call.
- 2:33:31It's now a five to five ball game.
- 2:33:34Hevner, the first baseman, kicked his cap about 15 feet away.
- 2:33:39He had to be restrained.
- 2:33:40He is still in the ball game.
- 2:33:42And out there arguing is Danny Ozark.
- 2:33:44But the ball game has been tied up here at the top of the ninth inning.
- 2:33:47It's five-five a comeback for the Dodgers.
- 2:33:51And really a comeback on the air this time of the Philadelphia Phillies.
- 2:33:56Let's pause five seconds for station identification.
- 2:33:59This is the CBS Radio Network.
- 2:34:01This is the American Forces Radio and Television Turf.
- 2:34:05They gave a base hit to Davy Lopes when he tied it up.
- 2:34:13And there's the throw to first.
- 2:34:14It just by the first baseman.
- 2:34:16And Lopes representing the go-ahead runners at second.
- 2:34:19The Phillies are falling apart.
- 2:34:22Charge and error to the pitcher.
- 2:34:24Gene Garber on an attempt to kick off of Davy Lopes.
- 2:34:27And if he can stay with it, don't go away.
- 2:34:30We're just getting underway.
- 2:34:32It's all even at five.
- 2:34:34On the ball hit by Modup, it went as a base hit.
- 2:34:42The ball hit by Lopes went as a base hit.
- 2:34:45An error charged to the second baseman.
- 2:34:48So the Dodgers have one error.
- 2:34:50And now another error charged to the pitcher.
- 2:34:52Second error for the Dodgers.
- 2:34:54And the go-ahead runner at second base with Bill Russell stepping in.
- 2:34:57Bill chops one foul for strike one.
- 2:35:00A dramatic comeback by the Dodgers here at veteran stadium in a game
- 2:35:04where they appear to be buried and dead.
- 2:35:09Five-five tie.
- 2:35:11And Gene Garber has been touched up for a couple of runs here on the top of the ninth.
- 2:35:16Here's the pitch by Russell.
- 2:35:18It's low and outside.
- 2:35:21One ball, one strike, two outs.
- 2:35:23Lopes with that tie-breaking run at second base.
- 2:35:28Lopes will get credit for the hit and the RBI on that run that scored when Moda came in from third.
- 2:35:34And the next one to Russell is low.
- 2:35:38So Bill Russell now with a count of two balls and one strike.
- 2:35:44Two balls, one strike, two outs.
- 2:35:46Dodgers trying to pull it out here in the ninth inning.
- 2:35:50Here's Garber's 2-1 delivery.
- 2:35:52And Russell throws the bat and Garber has to jump it on a ball that's fouled on the left side.
- 2:35:57Russell, in an effort to stay alive in one of those slow-hanging curve balls,
- 2:36:01lets the bat go and almost got Garber.
- 2:36:03Just got all the officials going in this inning.
- 2:36:06With two men out, D'Avalito beat out a bunt for a base hit.
- 2:36:09And then Moda hit one off the top of the glove and the wall and never scored as a two-base hit.
- 2:36:13The throw got away from the second baseman there, charged there, and on the play,
- 2:36:17D'Avalito came in to score so no run batted in.
- 2:36:21And then a base hit by Lopes to drive in the second run to giant,
- 2:36:25and Lopes going to second on the air by the pickoff on the pitcher.
- 2:36:29Okay, Russell waits.
- 2:36:30Here's the pitch.
- 2:36:31A chopper, third base side foul again.
- 2:36:33So take away that RBI from Manny Moda on the double off the glove and the wall of Greg Lozinski.
- 2:36:42All of this with two outs, a 5-5 tie.
- 2:36:45And Garber now checks his catcher once again, Jaeger.
- 2:36:48There goes Lopes for third.
- 2:36:50He puts it up the middle and the Dodgers are going ahead.
- 2:36:54The Dodgers take the lead 6-5 as Lopes was moving and Russell flaps it up the middle
- 2:37:01for a go-ahead single, a fourth consecutive hit off of Gene Garber.
- 2:37:11The Dodgers now lead at 6-5 in the ninth inning.
- 2:37:15Reggie Smith is stepping in.
- 2:37:22Garber now going after Smith who has struck out three times and bounced a second.
- 2:37:27There's a foul away by Smith for strike one.
- 2:37:30Just like that, the Dodgers with three runs in the top of the ninth inning have taken it away
- 2:37:35and they lead at 6-5.
- 2:37:37LA, six runs, 12-bit.
- 2:37:39Philly, five runs, sixes.
- 2:37:41But the Phils have one more at bat.
- 2:37:43Here's Garber's delivery and Smith fouls it away.
- 2:37:46Strike two, no ball, two strikes.
- 2:37:48Two right-handers, knuckle baller Charlie Huff and the curve baller Mike Garman throwing
- 2:37:54in the bullpen for Los Angeles.
- 2:37:56One of them will be on to pitch against the Phillies in the ninth.
- 2:37:58And looking ahead to the Phillies, it'll be Boa, Schmidt, and Lozinski.
- 2:38:07Here's the two-strike pitch and it's fouled away and there goes the bats
- 2:38:11flying down the first base side.
- 2:38:13Wow, that's about the fourth bat.
- 2:38:15The bats are going farther than the base hits.
- 2:38:17I don't know about you, Jerry Coleman, but with this kind of baseball, even my palms are sweaty.
- 2:38:21You can understand that this was a dramatic ninth inning for the Dodgers.
- 2:38:26They came in trailing five to three and the first two men, Baker and Mundy, went down meekly.
- 2:38:32Then a bunch single by D'Avileo, a double by Manimoda, an error by the second baseman.
- 2:38:37D'Avileo come in, Amoda went to third, an infield hit by Dave Lopes, tied it up.
- 2:38:42A single by Russell as Lopes went to second on the error on an attempt to pick off.
- 2:38:47And the Dodgers are leading it six to five.
- 2:38:50There's a foul back again by Reggie Smith and the Cows stays at nothing and two.
- 2:38:55So Bill Russell with a clutch single up the middle when Lopes was heading for third,
- 2:39:00got him in with ease.
- 2:39:01The Dodgers lead it six to five.
- 2:39:04A dramatic ball game, sensational ball game.
- 2:39:08Here's Smith waiting, Garver delivers a chopper right back to Garver.
- 2:39:12He makes the underhand cross to first and the Dodgers are out of there.
- 2:39:17The play goes one to three.
- 2:39:19But Los Angeles three runs on four base hits, two devastating Dodger filliers and a man left.
- 2:39:29We go to the bottom of the ninth inning.
- 2:39:31It'll be the Dodgers six and the Phillies five.
- 2:39:33If the American League playoffs go to a decisive fifth game,
- 2:39:36the New York Yankees may have to use one of their baseball top money pitchers, Jim Catfish Hunter.
- 2:39:41Hunter eight and four in postseason competition during his illustrious career has been bothered by a hernia
- 2:39:47and has not pitched in the game since September 10th.
- 2:39:50However, he threw in the bullpen before Thursday night's game in New York and was satisfied with the results.
- 2:39:55Said, Hunter, I threw about 15 minutes and felt pretty good.
- 2:39:58I'm sure I could pitch, but I don't know if Billy Martin has any plans for me.
- 2:40:02I heard you did give me some discomfort, but nothing like it did before.
- 2:40:06Martin has remained noncommittal about a possible fifth game starter, but would not rule out the Catfish.
- 2:40:13Says Martin, I'm just playing it day to day.
- 2:40:15He threw well yesterday. That's a good sign.
- 2:40:18But I'll have to wait and see what develops.
- 2:40:20Hunter was only 99 this year for the 4.71 earned run average, but he's always performed well in the playoffs.
- 2:40:27In the World Series, he is four and three in the playoffs, including a 1-1 record against the Royals last year, 4-1 in the World Series.
- 2:40:34Going now to the Phillies time at bat, and they're down to their last three outs.
- 2:40:39It was the Dodgers in the top of the ninth inning, trailing by a score of three to five and coming up with three to go in front, six to five.
- 2:40:46And now it's Philadelphia coming up.
- 2:40:48A new pitcher in the ballgame for the Dodgers and coming back in for the play-by-play, Jerry Coleman.
- 2:40:55Mike Garman is coming on here, pitcher number six for Los Angeles.
- 2:41:01Bert Hooten started, Rick Roden, Doug Rau, Elias Sosa, Lance Roxton, and now Mike Garman will try to come in and hold the Phillies.
- 2:41:12Dodgers six runs, 12 hits. Philadelphia five runs, and six hits.
- 2:41:15And Larry Bola stepping in.
- 2:41:17Bola is 0-3 in the ballgame today, 2-12 in the series.
- 2:41:23A first pitch to the switch hitting shortstop is right in there, strike one.
- 2:41:28Mike Garman, right-hander making a second appearance.
- 2:41:33He pitched a third of an inning in the first game.
- 2:41:36Fires high and Bola takes it high. One ball, one strike.
- 2:41:40Garman started with a ball and red socks, on with the St. Louis Cardinals, the Chicago White Sox, and now with the Los Angeles Dodgers.
- 2:41:48Wines and here's the delivery. The 1-1 pitch is popped up to the shortstop. Bill Russell camping under this, waiting for it.
- 2:41:54He's got it, one away.
- 2:41:56So Larry Bola, one out, bottom of the ninth inning.
- 2:42:00Dodgers six, Phillies five, and now the power starts to head up there.
- 2:42:05Mike Schmidt and behind him, Greg Lazinski.
- 2:42:08Schmidt with 38 home runs, Lazinski 39, and Garman has got to be thinking about that.
- 2:42:14A dramatic comeback by the Dodgers with two outs and trailing by two.
- 2:42:25They got three runs, they lead by a single marker right now, last of the night.
- 2:42:29The first pitch to Schmidt is inside ball one.
- 2:42:33Schmidt has gone 0-3 in the ball game. He had a base on balls. He has won for 12.
- 2:42:40Garman, the right-hander, ready again, and the 1-0 pitch has hit the center field, high and in the air, routine play.
- 2:42:50Out there is Glenn Burke, who's taken over for Rick Munday, and we have two down.
- 2:42:55So now the Phillies are down to their final out.
- 2:42:58Glenn Burke has taken over in center field for Rick Munday.
- 2:43:02And behind the plate, I believe we have Jerry Grote in there for Steve Yeager.
- 2:43:07So a couple of defensive changes.
- 2:43:10If you're keeping book with us, to keep your record straight, Grote behind the plate, Burke in center field.
- 2:43:17Greg Lazinski, the only thing standing between Philadelphia and a defeat.
- 2:43:23Dodgers leading 6-5. Here's the pitch to Lazinski, and it hit him.
- 2:43:27High and on the shoulder, and I'm not sure just how badly, but apparently he's shaking it off.
- 2:43:33Well, I can tell you, it's fun like that, Ralph Tiner, but the pitcher does not want to hit the batter.
- 2:43:38That's tying run at first base.
- 2:43:44So now the potential tying run is first, and has that first base, and Richie Hebner coming up.
- 2:43:49It was Hebner that got a rally started in the eighth inning with a double off the wall in right center field.
- 2:43:54It saw the Phillies take the lead by a score of 5-3.
- 2:43:57And it looks like the Phillies have the ball game ramped up, but the Dodgers came back with two men out.
- 2:44:02And started the rally to go in front 6-5 on a bunt base hit by Vic D'Avilio.
- 2:44:09Now we have a pinch runner coming in for Greg Lazinski, and now again, Jerry Coleman.
- 2:44:14Jerry Martin has gone in to run for Lazinski. Martin, a faster man, as Danny Ozark has got to have some offense here.
- 2:44:22And he must have a faster man at first base than Lazinski. So Jerry Martin is out there.
- 2:44:27Richie Hebner stepping in.
- 2:44:33The Phillies with two down have the tying run at first. It's Hebner from the left side is waiting.
- 2:44:39Garmin first hit to Hebner. It's the first and the ball game is over.
- 2:44:44Grabbed by Steve Garvey. He caught the ball and jumped on first with an emphatic pounding of the bag.
- 2:44:52And that's it. This ball game is history. The final score, Dodgers 6-5.
