- 0:05SPEAKER_00: What's up, everybody?
- 0:06SPEAKER_00: Welcome to another episode of the bottom line on sports, our show about the intersection of sports and money.
- 0:13SPEAKER_00: He's Jeremy Pink.
- 0:14SPEAKER_00: I'm Jean-Jacques Taylor.
- 0:16SPEAKER_00: What's on the document today, bro?
- 0:18SPEAKER_03: We're talking some of our favorite subjects.
- 0:20SPEAKER_03: We're talking uh we've got a big number to start with, which I think is related to the uh Miami Heat Bam out of bio extravaganza from last night.
- 0:28SPEAKER_03: Uh, and we're taping this on a Wednesday afternoon, in case you can't tell.
- 0:31SPEAKER_03: Uh, secondly, we're gonna talk about some of the latest uh money in dealings in and around NFL free agency, uh, talking uh lots of NIL uh college football uh items this week.
- 0:43SPEAKER_03: And we got our typical Ohio State topic as well.
- 0:48SPEAKER_00: The number, my friends, 452,397.80.
- 0:58SPEAKER_00: See that puzzled look on your face?
- 1:00SPEAKER_00: That, my man, the amount of money bam at a botto Bayo makes per basketball game.
- 1:09SPEAKER_03: Oh wow.
- 1:10SPEAKER_03: So how much 450,000, did you say?
- 1:12SPEAKER_03: 452,000.
- 1:14SPEAKER_03: 452,000.
- 1:15SPEAKER_03: So so per game, which means that's about six thousand dollars a point from last night.
- 1:22SPEAKER_03: There you go.
- 1:22SPEAKER_03: Yeah, something like that.
- 1:23SPEAKER_00: 37 million for the season, and I think for$37 million for a season, you shouldn't score 83 points in a game every now and then.
- 1:31SPEAKER_03: Yeah, but 37, we were talking about this briefly.
- 1:33SPEAKER_03: 37 million is is a huge amount of money.
- 1:36SPEAKER_03: It's not that huge amount of money for an NBA player, particularly you know, an Olympian and an all-star and somebody of his status.
- 1:44SPEAKER_00: No, it's uh matter of fact, um, I wonder if he's in the top 10 of highest paid NBA players.
- 1:51SPEAKER_03: No, not even close.
- 1:52SPEAKER_00: Which is which is, I mean, you know, that's that's money on a whole nother level for an athlete.
- 1:58SPEAKER_00: You know, football players are just not getting there, baseball players have been there for a minute, but that's just insane money.
- 2:03SPEAKER_00: $37 million a year.
- 2:07SPEAKER_00: But I often justify by saying you gotta remember, there are one percenter.
- 2:12SPEAKER_00: There's only one percent of people in the world, not even that many, who can do what he can do, and that's why he gets paid$37 million.
- 2:21SPEAKER_00: Now, did you watch that uh that game?
- 2:23SPEAKER_00: Because it was a hot topic at the gym this morning.
- 2:26SPEAKER_03: Oh, is that is that right?
- 2:27SPEAKER_03: Uh I I wouldn't know, I didn't go to the gym.
- 2:29SPEAKER_00: Yeah, the topic was why are so many people hating on on uh band's performance?
- 2:35SPEAKER_00: And I just said, uh, you know, the world is full of haters.
- 2:38SPEAKER_00: And then I would then I read about today.
- 2:40SPEAKER_00: I go, oh, I see why they're hating on it.
- 2:44SPEAKER_03: No, I mean, it's like, look, I mean, did you see the starting lineup from the I I I defy you to name any of the starters from the Washington Widgers Wizards who they played against last night?
- 2:54SPEAKER_03: You know, this was like this was like only guess Trey Young or Anthony Davis.
- 3:00SPEAKER_03: They're both out.
- 3:01SPEAKER_00: How about the rookie they took in the first round?
- 3:03SPEAKER_03: I can't remember.
- 3:04SPEAKER_03: I can't even remember.
- 3:04SPEAKER_03: I looked it up briefly.
- 3:06SPEAKER_03: I can't even remember the names anymore.
- 3:07SPEAKER_03: But but you know, it was like we were talking about this earlier, too.
- 3:10SPEAKER_03: This is like, you know what this is like?
- 3:12SPEAKER_03: This was like a good, a top quality EYBL AAU team versus a town team.
- 3:19SPEAKER_03: And so, of course, the star player on the EYBL AAU team, which is Bam out of bio in this in this circumstance is going to score a ton of points.
- 3:27SPEAKER_03: But but yeah, you know what they did in the fourth quarter.
- 3:30SPEAKER_03: I watched the last bit of the game.
- 3:32SPEAKER_03: What they did in the what they did in the fourth quarter is just basically just get the ball to him, you know, and he shot 43 free throws.
- 3:38SPEAKER_00: I think that's the thing, it's 43 free throws.
- 3:41SPEAKER_00: I think that was that was a thing that had people going crazy.
- 3:44SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 3:44SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 3:45SPEAKER_00: And the fact that you're up by 20 or 30 and you're fouling to try to get the ball back.
- 3:50SPEAKER_00: And so it's it seemed to be that they were thinking it was not as an authentic 83, like in the course and the flow of the game.
- 3:58SPEAKER_00: And my problem, my point is, it's hard to score 83 points in an NBA game.
- 4:02SPEAKER_00: So, you know, you can't even do that on video if you're playing NBA 2K.
- 4:06SPEAKER_00: Yeah, it's hard to score 83 points in a in a game.
- 4:10SPEAKER_03: Right.
- 4:10SPEAKER_03: Yeah, but you also you also have to figure that, you know, he he he passed Kobe, who was who I think it was about 20 years ago, Kobe had 81, and then Wilt Wilt had 100.
- 4:21SPEAKER_03: And I, you know, I think Wilt had the Wilt also scored like 78 at one point, too.
- 4:26SPEAKER_03: So I think Wilt has like two of the top four or five.
- 4:29SPEAKER_03: But you you're telling me that Wilt's 100 or Kobe's 81, which I sort of vaguely remember.
- 4:36SPEAKER_00: Well, I remember Kobe's 81.
- 4:37SPEAKER_03: Yeah, but Kobe's 81 was I could have scored 81 with the number of shots he put up in that game, you know.
- 4:43SPEAKER_03: So it's I think they're all gonna have something to them that are gonna make them, you know, whether it's inauthentic or not, but who cares?
- 4:51SPEAKER_03: I think to your point, 83 points is is hard to do.
- 4:55SPEAKER_00: Uh yeah, even if you even if we got 43 from the free throw line, it's hard to do.
- 5:00SPEAKER_03: That's that's right.
- 5:01SPEAKER_00: That being said, let's move on to NFL free agency.
- 5:05SPEAKER_00: And the big news, man, it's really NFL free agency, NFL trades, NFL offseason.
- 5:11SPEAKER_00: And here's why this is the biggest news it's not just that the Raiders rescinded their trade uh with the Baltimore Ravens for Max for Max Crosby.
- 5:24SPEAKER_03: I think the Ravens rescinded it.
- 5:25SPEAKER_00: Yeah, the Ravens rescinded the trade.
- 5:27SPEAKER_00: The Raiders sent Max Crosby to the Ravens for two number one draft choices.
- 5:33SPEAKER_00: The Ravens uh had his physical and decided to rescind the trade.
- 5:38SPEAKER_00: Once they rescinded the trade the next day, they signed Trey Hendrickson for the same basically the same exact money they were gonna they were gonna assume from Max Crosby's contract.
- 5:50SPEAKER_00: Now, here's the deal, here's the inside story.
- 5:53SPEAKER_00: Having covered the NFL since 1995.
- 5:55SPEAKER_03: Well, hold on, let me let me ask before you get into that.
- 5:58SPEAKER_03: But but they didn't also they also didn't give up two number one draft picks.
- 6:01SPEAKER_00: Right.
- 6:02SPEAKER_00: They just paid the money.
- 6:03SPEAKER_03: Yeah, yeah.
- 6:04SPEAKER_00: So for having covered the NFL since 1995, you could show up with two broken legs and a broken wrist.
- 6:12SPEAKER_00: If they want you to pass the physical, you'll pass the physical.
- 6:17SPEAKER_00: So the fact that the Ravens were like, I didn't pass the physical.
- 6:21SPEAKER_00: Well, you knew he had a torn meniscus when he showed up that had been surgically repaired and they wouldn't be ready to play for a certain amount of months.
- 6:29SPEAKER_00: None of this is new to you.
- 6:31SPEAKER_00: And so to me, I think they just and and some several other people have reported this.
- 6:36SPEAKER_00: They're just like, Oh, we thought Trey Hendrix was gonna cost a lot more than 28 million dollars a year.
- 6:42SPEAKER_00: Well, hell, why should you know?
- 6:45SPEAKER_00: Let's just resend the trade.
- 6:47SPEAKER_00: Now, here's the back, here's the problem, though, bro.
- 6:51SPEAKER_00: The Raiders went out and operated as though they didn't have Max Crosby's money on their books.
- 6:59SPEAKER_00: So they signed you to a deal and you to a deal and me to a deal, and we're all happy.
- 7:03SPEAKER_00: We're popping bottles.
- 7:05SPEAKER_00: They said, nah, Max Crosby's on your your roster, right?
- 7:09SPEAKER_00: And you got about 24 hours to figure out because these deals don't come through until the first day of the league year, which I think is tomorrow, Wednesday.
- 7:19SPEAKER_03: Oh, it's today.
- 7:20SPEAKER_00: Oh, it's today.
- 7:21SPEAKER_00: So um they gotta figure out what to do to get under the salary cap and get all these other deals done, otherwise, you can't do them.
- 7:30SPEAKER_01: Right.
- 7:31SPEAKER_00: And so it is a uh it is a huge mess, man.
- 7:35SPEAKER_00: And the Ravens have effectively screwed everybody.
- 7:39SPEAKER_03: Yeah, uh, you know, so let me from a Ravens point of view, I think they did a simple equation, and they said, okay, I can get Max Crosby at X number of dollars, whatever that number of dollars is, and it's gonna cost me, you know, two draft picks.
- 7:56SPEAKER_03: Okay, so that's that's bucket A.
- 7:58SPEAKER_03: Bucket B is um, oh, I can get a player.
- 8:02SPEAKER_03: I don't think Hendrickson's a little bit older, is probably not as good as Max Crosby, but if you take Hendrickson and now you have those picks back, that's actually a greater package, probably, than what Max Crosby is.
- 8:16SPEAKER_03: And I so I think that's what if I I think that was their calculus.
- 8:19SPEAKER_03: That's number one.
- 8:20SPEAKER_03: I think if I'm Max Crosby, I think the Raiders might be okay.
- 8:26SPEAKER_03: Although I'm not a huge Mendoza fan, they'll draft Mendoza, but um, I think the Raiders might be okay this year.
- 8:32SPEAKER_03: You know, so I think if he stayed there, he's probably gonna be, he's probably gonna be uh totally fine.
- 8:38SPEAKER_03: He's probably gonna be okay.
- 8:40SPEAKER_03: Um the downside though for the Raiders is if they do try to trade Max Crosby now, there's no way they're getting two number ones for him.
- 8:47SPEAKER_03: No chance.
- 8:48SPEAKER_00: I don't know if they'll get a what number one for him.
- 8:50SPEAKER_03: Yeah, they might get like a two and a three or something, I but but they're not gonna get a one for him.
- 8:55SPEAKER_03: So I I think the you know, I I in I in if in if there are salary cap implications for the Raiders, which it's which is you know, you you're saying I'm sure you I'm sure you're right, that there are, uh, yeah, they're gonna end up uh they're gonna end up worse off for sure.
- 9:11SPEAKER_00: It's uh I and I like to make all these things relative.
- 9:14SPEAKER_00: It's like if your household budget, you go, hey, I'm getting a check this week for uh, you know, I did some work for the JJT Media Group, I'm getting a check for$10,000.
- 9:24SPEAKER_00: Uh, because I've already done the work.
- 9:26SPEAKER_00: He told me check be here this week.
- 9:28SPEAKER_00: So let's go ahead and do this, this, and this because the money will be here this week.
- 9:33SPEAKER_01: Right.
- 9:33SPEAKER_00: And then I go, hey man, I didn't send a check.
- 9:36SPEAKER_00: Uh give me about a month, I'll get it to you.
- 9:39SPEAKER_00: Right.
- 9:39SPEAKER_00: And you're like, bro, I got this stuff right now.
- 9:43SPEAKER_01: Yeah, yeah.
- 9:44SPEAKER_00: And uh, you know, you might figure out a way to make it work, but it's a big pain in the butt to uh to try to get down with it.
- 9:51SPEAKER_03: But but you would never have a client pay late.
- 9:53SPEAKER_03: That never happens, you know.
- 9:56SPEAKER_00: We don't want to talk about that.
- 9:57SPEAKER_00: I know we ain't got enough time for that.
- 9:59SPEAKER_03: I know, yeah.
- 10:00SPEAKER_03: We both we both run our own businesses, and you know, that's always a that that's always an issue.
- 10:06SPEAKER_00: So uh um you also had another news, the center market got busted, which is kind of insane to me.
- 10:14SPEAKER_00: And again, it goes with the Baltimore Ravens, uh, who lost their center to the uh Raiders, ironically enough.
- 10:23SPEAKER_00: Starting uh the highest paid center in the uh in the NFL made, I believe, uh 15, 14, 18.
- 10:32SPEAKER_03: It was it 18, yeah.
- 10:34SPEAKER_00: They paid this dude an average of 27.
- 10:37SPEAKER_03: Yeah, 50 50 50.
- 10:39SPEAKER_03: That's right.
- 10:39SPEAKER_03: It was 18, right?
- 10:40SPEAKER_03: 50, 50 increase in the market.
- 10:42SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 10:42SPEAKER_03: And what are y'all doing?
- 10:44SPEAKER_03: Well, so here's so from your experience, I want to ask you, uh, I want to ask you this question in a second.
- 10:51SPEAKER_03: I want to know where you see the relative value of a center, but uh you know, compared to some of the other players, because you would consider you know, quarterback, uh uh left tackle, you know, uh uh probably maybe even wide receiver, edge rusher, maybe as a top four.
- 11:07SPEAKER_03: But but putting that aside for a second, if you took a center, A, is the center undervalued, and B, if I'm the Raiders and I have like uh essentially one of the top centers in the league, and I pair that center with a rookie quarterback, is that actually worth it?
- 11:24SPEAKER_03: Is he going to be helpful to the rookie quarterback or not?
- 11:26SPEAKER_03: Number one.
- 11:27SPEAKER_03: And number two is where do you see the relative, you know, in the hierarchy of important positions in the NFL, where do you see center?
- 11:34SPEAKER_00: Um that you can answer that all with the same thing.
- 11:37SPEAKER_00: Um, really, to me, center is the second most important offensive line position behind the left tackle.
- 11:44SPEAKER_00: If it were me, it'd be left tackle, center, right tackle, and then you can stack the guards however you want to stack them.
- 11:51SPEAKER_01: Right.
- 11:52SPEAKER_00: And here's why um here's why you want a young center, uh a quality center with a young quarterback.
- 11:59SPEAKER_00: Okay, in today's NFL, your quarterback's already got to come to the line of scrimmage and read the defense.
- 12:07SPEAKER_00: And based on what he sees in today's NFL, he either says, basically, we're gonna stick with the play that we call or kill, kill, we're going to the second play.
- 12:18SPEAKER_00: Um, so that's what a quarterback's got to do, young quarterback's got to do.
- 12:22SPEAKER_00: Now, if you also ask him to say, hey, make sure you can identify 53 as the mic, so you know where the blitz is coming from and how to shade the protection.
- 12:33SPEAKER_00: And then you ask him to say, make some just changes with the with the blocking assignment based on the brunt front that he sees.
- 12:39SPEAKER_00: You're asking them to do a whole lot in 20 seconds by the time they get to the line of screwings.
- 12:45SPEAKER_00: Now, some can't do it, but you're asking him to do a whole lot, which means what the propensity for you to screw something up is much greater.
- 12:54SPEAKER_00: So you get a veteran center and you tell the quarterback, you just worry about reading the safeties and figuring out what to do.
- 13:01SPEAKER_00: Get us in the right play.
- 13:02SPEAKER_00: We're gonna let the center make the run card, make the blocking scheme change, identify the mic linebacker, shift the protections and all of that.
- 13:11SPEAKER_00: We'll let him do that.
- 13:12SPEAKER_00: And that's why a uh a terrific center, you know, is worth their weight and goal.
- 13:18SPEAKER_00: And that's why to me that the second most important position on the line besides left tackle.
- 13:23SPEAKER_03: So it sounds to me like it's a combination of both.
- 13:25SPEAKER_03: This may be a situation where because you have a rookie quarterback coming in, you might have a tendency to overpay the center for the first couple of years to work in tandem with a rookie quarterback.
- 13:38SPEAKER_03: But that being said, it sounds like the center position might be undervalued anyway.
- 13:43SPEAKER_03: Is that about right?
- 13:44SPEAKER_00: Yeah, and the other thing is, you know, you're you're a team that sucks.
- 13:48SPEAKER_03: So when I'm competing against teams, I may have, huh?
- 13:55SPEAKER_03: If Mendoza is halfway decent, which we don't know, uh, I don't think the Raiders will suck.
- 14:01SPEAKER_03: I think the Raiders will be, you know, depending on Mendoza, it could be anywhere between a seven and a ten-win team next year.
- 14:08SPEAKER_03: Maybe a seven and a nine-win team.
- 14:10SPEAKER_03: I don't think they'll be at the bottom of the league.
- 14:12SPEAKER_00: That's what I mean.
- 14:14SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 14:14SPEAKER_00: So if you but if you're the Raiders and you suck right now, then sometimes you got overpaid to get you to come.
- 14:22SPEAKER_03: Oh, I see.
- 14:23SPEAKER_03: I see.
- 14:24SPEAKER_03: Yeah, that makes sense.
- 14:25SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 14:25SPEAKER_00: You know, you suck.
- 14:26SPEAKER_00: And so you gotta provide the proper incentive right for you to get here, which is money.
- 14:33SPEAKER_00: And so, you know, and the Raiders had a lot of money under the salary cap, so them overspending to make sure they got the player that they wanted is great for him.
- 14:45SPEAKER_00: And but that's why you overspend.
- 14:47SPEAKER_03: Yeah, and they also they're also not paying a quarterback, the big money.
- 14:50SPEAKER_03: Salary cap itself went up, so there's actually probably a lot more room now than they than they had thought.
- 14:56SPEAKER_03: And maybe now if they have their two uh you know draft picks back, you know, they have to spend even less, you know, than they thought.
- 15:04SPEAKER_00: So yeah, that is that's that whole thing is still wild to me, man.
- 15:08SPEAKER_03: I'm sorry that the Ravens had the draft picks, but yeah, but yeah, but they have they have Max.
- 15:12SPEAKER_03: Actually, I'm wrong.
- 15:13SPEAKER_03: They have Max Crosby, so they may have to pick up his salary now.
- 15:15SPEAKER_00: But uh I still think they're gonna move Crosby.
- 15:18SPEAKER_00: Uh you know, it's hard to trade a dude.
- 15:22unknown: Yeah.
- 15:22SPEAKER_00: You didn't bring him back, be like, hey, hey, buddy, we didn't really mean to trade you.
- 15:26SPEAKER_00: Don't worry about that.
- 15:27SPEAKER_03: Well, you see what's happened to, I don't know if you remember the the Lakers uh tried to make the trade for the center from Charlotte last year and put Dalton Connect.
- 15:34SPEAKER_02: Oh, yeah.
- 15:35SPEAKER_03: And Dalton Connect hasn't seen the court since then.
- 15:37SPEAKER_03: So he's still on the Lakers.
- 15:39SPEAKER_00: You know, this is a hard thing to do.
- 15:42SPEAKER_00: Uh problem is though, now they've got no leverage on the trade because everybody's going to overblow the big bag.
- 15:49SPEAKER_00: Like, oh my God, you know, and so damaged goods, damaged goods.
- 15:52SPEAKER_03: The Ravens wouldn't even sign them, yeah.
- 15:54SPEAKER_00: My suspicion is they'll have to do, they'll have to get 50 cents on the dollar, and they'll have to make it a conditional deal.
- 16:03SPEAKER_00: Like, we'll give you a two or we'll give you a three.
- 16:06SPEAKER_03: You think you think it's devalued 50 cents on the dollar?
- 16:09SPEAKER_00: Wow.
- 16:10SPEAKER_00: Dude.
- 16:11SPEAKER_00: I mean, because they're gonna be like, hey, Dan Cooper, here's a trivia, here's a trivia question for you.
- 16:18SPEAKER_00: Okay, Dan Cooper is the foremost knee authority in the country.
- 16:23SPEAKER_00: You got a knee problem, you want Dr.
- 16:25SPEAKER_00: Cooper to handle it.
- 16:26SPEAKER_01: Okay.
- 16:27SPEAKER_00: Dr.
- 16:27SPEAKER_00: Cooper is the Cowboys teen doctor, which just means he's with the Cowboys on Sundays.
- 16:34SPEAKER_00: They send all their guys to him.
- 16:36SPEAKER_00: And then when you got special cases like Max Crosby, and he says, Hey, I want the best doctor in the country to look at my knee, they go, fly to Dallas and we'll get you in.
- 16:46SPEAKER_00: When my son hurt his knee playing football, Dr.
- 16:49SPEAKER_00: Cooper looked at him.
- 16:50SPEAKER_01: Wow.
- 16:51SPEAKER_00: Oh, yeah, dad pulled the strings.
- 16:53SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 16:54SPEAKER_00: Dad called the cowboy and said, Hey, I need to get my son in and see Cooper.
- 16:57SPEAKER_00: What do I need to do?
- 16:58SPEAKER_01: Uh-huh.
- 16:58SPEAKER_00: And he said, Well, he's working these days.
- 17:00SPEAKER_00: We'll call him and see if uh he can work him in.
- 17:03SPEAKER_00: Worked him in, looked at him.
- 17:05SPEAKER_00: And um he had a slight tear of the patellar tendon.
- 17:10SPEAKER_00: Uh, very slight tear.
- 17:11SPEAKER_00: But anyway, uh, so when Dr.
- 17:14SPEAKER_00: Cooper says you got these issues, there's like nowhere else to go to be like, well, he's not really right.
- 17:20SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 17:21SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 17:21SPEAKER_03: So the sec the second opinion doesn't matter in this case.
- 17:24SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 17:24SPEAKER_00: No.
- 17:25SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 17:25SPEAKER_00: And so I think what'll happen, but if you believe that he's right, you'll say, Well, I'll give you a two, or I'll give you a two and a three.
- 17:34SPEAKER_00: And if he gets 10 sacks, which if he's right, he should get, then that'll convert to a two and a one.
- 17:41SPEAKER_00: Something like that.
- 17:42SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 17:42SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 17:43SPEAKER_00: You know, or if he plays uh, you know, 14 games or he plays 85% of the snaps, it'll convert to a one and a three.
- 17:53SPEAKER_00: Or, you know, whatever thing you can do to say that if he really does what he should do, we don't mind giving you the draft capital.
- 18:00SPEAKER_00: But if he's over here and he's hurt and he ain't playing, nah, we ain't finna give you that.
- 18:04SPEAKER_03: So do you think if the if the Ravens let's say the slightly different scenario, let's say it was rumored that the Ravens were about to complete this deal for you know two number ones for Crosby, and they backed out at the end before they could consummate the deal, not for for you know reasons of his physical, but because they just decided they didn't want to do the deal.
- 18:29SPEAKER_03: It had nothing to do with uh you know his knee.
- 18:32SPEAKER_03: Do you think he if he entered into the marketplace today, he would still get two number ones for him or not?
- 18:38SPEAKER_03: Or do you think that was just too high of a price to pay to begin with?
- 18:42SPEAKER_00: Um you can appreciate this because that's two different questions.
- 18:47SPEAKER_00: If you entered the marketplace, would you get two number ones?
- 18:50SPEAKER_00: It's all driven by supply and demand.
- 18:53SPEAKER_00: Like, how many teams want him?
- 18:55SPEAKER_00: The more teams that want him, like Dallas was hot and bothered after.
- 18:58SPEAKER_00: And so Dallas said, we'll give you a I can't remember, I think Dallas said a one.
- 19:06SPEAKER_01: Dallas was less.
- 19:06SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 19:07SPEAKER_00: Dallas said a one, a two, and a starting defensive tackle.
- 19:11SPEAKER_01: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 19:12SPEAKER_00: And they said we'd rather have two number ones.
- 19:15SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 19:16SPEAKER_00: You know, so if, you know, so now with the knee problem, you stick him out in the free market.
- 19:23SPEAKER_03: Yeah, it's different.
- 19:24SPEAKER_03: I get that.
- 19:25SPEAKER_03: I get that.
- 19:25SPEAKER_03: I'm just I'm just thinking that if the Ravens backed out because it was and and he was completely healthy or whatever.
- 19:32SPEAKER_00: He had whatever you thought he had, uh, you probably get, I don't think you'd get two number ones.
- 19:38SPEAKER_00: I think you'd get uh one.
- 19:41SPEAKER_00: You probably get a one and a two or a one and a three.
- 19:43SPEAKER_03: Yeah, probably what the cowboys offered.
- 19:45SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 19:45SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 19:46SPEAKER_03: So so I think part of this, that's kind of what I think.
- 19:48SPEAKER_03: So I think part of it is the Ravens, and the Ravens also, I think are it's very unusual for them to trade number one picks at all.
- 19:56SPEAKER_03: So I think the Ravens might have just said, oh man, we just we got you know consumed in a market.
- 20:02SPEAKER_03: It's like overbidding for like use your analogy, it's like overbidding for a house.
- 20:05SPEAKER_03: And then when you sort of come back down to earth, you look around and go, that house is.
- 20:28SPEAKER_00: When the season starts.
- 20:31SPEAKER_03: I think he might be.
- 20:32SPEAKER_03: I think he might be.
- 20:34SPEAKER_00: All right, we'll put one dollar on it.
- 20:36SPEAKER_03: Put it put a dollar on it.
- 20:37SPEAKER_00: Right, write it down.
- 20:38SPEAKER_03: All right.
- 20:39SPEAKER_00: Uh one dollar bet.
- 20:40SPEAKER_00: Will Max Crosby be with the Raiders or some other team when the season starts on September, whatever it is.
- 20:49SPEAKER_03: Okay, okay.
- 20:50SPEAKER_03: Because it's a dollar.
- 20:51SPEAKER_03: I mean, I think you know, I would say that I should get two to one, but but you know, I'll we'll make it an even bet.
- 20:56SPEAKER_00: So I give you$1.50 to one.
- 20:59SPEAKER_03: There's okay, there you go.
- 21:00SPEAKER_03: Um, all right, I'm I'm definitely writing that down.
- 21:05SPEAKER_03: Chances if I win the bet and see that money are so slim, but anyway, that's a different story.
- 21:09SPEAKER_00: So uh, but uh in in general, it's been uh, you know, I didn't think this was a great free agent class.
- 21:18SPEAKER_00: There's lots of good players, solid players.
- 21:20SPEAKER_00: Nobody you go, oh my god, I can't believe this guy's available.
- 21:23SPEAKER_00: Well and so go ahead.
- 21:25SPEAKER_03: Did you see what Daniel Jones signed for?
- 21:31SPEAKER_03: Did you?
- 21:32SPEAKER_03: I'm sorry, let me rephrase it.
- 21:34SPEAKER_00: I'm still in shock.
- 21:35SPEAKER_00: He signed for 100 million?
- 21:38SPEAKER_03: 80, uh, 44 million a year.
- 21:42SPEAKER_03: Duke's Duke's Daniel Jones is gonna make more than uh uh Sam Darnold.
- 21:47SPEAKER_00: Here's the problem.
- 21:50SPEAKER_00: And because he played for the New York Giants, I've seen he's just a guy.
- 21:56SPEAKER_00: Yeah, like he's got some athletic.
- 22:01SPEAKER_00: But he's he's literally just a guy.
- 22:04SPEAKER_00: He's he's a B quarterback.
- 22:07SPEAKER_00: I'm not even sure he's a B.
- 22:08SPEAKER_00: You don't think so?
- 22:10SPEAKER_00: I would say I I I could be wrong, so I'm I'm going to the I'm going to the videotape right quick.
- 22:17SPEAKER_00: But I mean he's nobody sits there and goes, that's the guy's taking us to the Super Bowl.
- 22:25SPEAKER_00: And so I don't know why they felt um I don't know why they felt compelled to pay him that.
- 22:33SPEAKER_00: Like you coming out this Achilles.
- 22:34SPEAKER_00: What's the what's your market, dog?
- 22:38SPEAKER_00: Well it's it's again, it's a Daniel Jones last year in Indianapolis.
- 22:47SPEAKER_00: 68% completion percentage.
- 22:49SPEAKER_00: That's good.
- 22:51SPEAKER_00: 3,100 yards, 19 TDs, 8 interceptions.
- 22:56SPEAKER_03: He played what, 10 games, 11 games last year?
- 22:59SPEAKER_00: Uh no, he played 13.
- 23:01SPEAKER_03: He did.
- 23:02SPEAKER_03: Oh, I didn't realize he played 13.
- 23:03SPEAKER_00: He averaged 8.1 yards a temp, which is good.
- 23:07SPEAKER_00: That's respectable.
- 23:09SPEAKER_00: And you know what?
- 23:11SPEAKER_00: Those were almost, and see, this is the problem with Daniel Jones as I'm looking at it.
- 23:16SPEAKER_00: Almost all of those were career highs, and they're just mad numbers.
- 23:21SPEAKER_00: You know what I mean?
- 23:22SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 23:22SPEAKER_00: Um, and so, you know, and coming off an Achilles too.
- 23:28SPEAKER_00: I mean, you know, this is why we love America.
- 23:31SPEAKER_00: This is capitalism at its finest.
- 23:33SPEAKER_03: Right.
- 23:34SPEAKER_03: But but but I but I also think the uh there's a couple things.
- 23:39SPEAKER_03: One is I think the AFC is was particularly weak last year.
- 23:44SPEAKER_03: I'm not sure how much better it's gonna get this season.
- 23:47SPEAKER_03: Um do you believe in the Jaguars or the Texans or the Titans in that division?
- 23:54SPEAKER_00: Um let me see.
- 23:56SPEAKER_00: The Titans, no.
- 23:58SPEAKER_03: Um is he better than Cam Ward, Daniel Jones?
- 24:03SPEAKER_00: Oh, I don't know.
- 24:04SPEAKER_03: Uh right now, right now he probably is.
- 24:07SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 24:08SPEAKER_00: Yeah, but that's that's a function of just Cam.
- 24:12SPEAKER_00: Let me let me look at Cam Ward for a couple more years.
- 24:14SPEAKER_03: But I guess I guess the point is is you look at that division and you go, Trevor Lawrence, who can but check this out.
- 24:22SPEAKER_00: I'd rather I don't even like Kyler Murray.
- 24:25SPEAKER_00: I'd rather have Kyler Murray for 1.3 million.
- 24:28SPEAKER_03: Oh, for sure.
- 24:29SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 24:30SPEAKER_00: And I don't even like Kyler Murray.
- 24:31SPEAKER_03: Right.
- 24:32SPEAKER_00: Uh I might would have rather had Malik Willis for three years and 60 million.
- 24:40SPEAKER_03: He signed he signed for what he signed for what is that what is that what he signed for three years for 60?
- 24:44SPEAKER_00: Three years 67.
- 24:45SPEAKER_03: So yeah, that's I thought it was about 22, yeah, about 22 million.
- 24:48SPEAKER_00: Um, this is all monopoly money, but Dan Jones, like I got quarterbacks in tiers.
- 24:56SPEAKER_00: Like he ain't no 44 million dollar quarterback.
- 24:58SPEAKER_00: No, he's in the if Baker Mayfield was in the 30 range, the 33 range, he's not even as good as Baker Mayfield.
- 25:07SPEAKER_00: He should be in the 28, the third, whatever I agree with that.
- 25:11SPEAKER_00: Sam Darnold before last year.
- 25:14SPEAKER_00: 29, 30.
- 25:15SPEAKER_00: It's still monopoly money.
- 25:17SPEAKER_00: I mean, it's still like, oh my god, you're rich behind your dreams.
- 25:20SPEAKER_01: Right.
- 25:20SPEAKER_00: But if he signed two years, 60, I go, okay, that's about right.
- 25:25SPEAKER_00: I'll even give you 64.
- 25:27SPEAKER_00: Okay, all right, I feel you.
- 25:29SPEAKER_00: 88?
- 25:30SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 25:31SPEAKER_00: Man, please.
- 25:32SPEAKER_03: Yeah, yeah.
- 25:33unknown: Please.
- 25:34SPEAKER_03: Yeah, he's he's he's he's at least dude.
- 25:38SPEAKER_00: Yeah, this is a league where two to one is the standard, touchdown interception is two to one for good quarterbacks.
- 25:48SPEAKER_00: Good solid quarterbacks, two to one.
- 25:51SPEAKER_00: Elite quarterbacks, three to one, badass dudes, four to one.
- 25:58SPEAKER_00: That's the standard.
- 26:00SPEAKER_00: Daniel Jones, 89 T D's, 55 picks.
- 26:06SPEAKER_03: So not even two to one.
- 26:08SPEAKER_00: Do you know how hard it is to be less than two to one in today's NFL?
- 26:13SPEAKER_00: Bro, you gotta suck to do that.
- 26:15SPEAKER_00: I mean, you gotta work at it.
- 26:17SPEAKER_00: Right.
- 26:17SPEAKER_00: But but when you look at it now, he did get two to one in Indianapolis last year, yeah.
- 26:23SPEAKER_00: And that's probably what they're looking at.
- 26:26SPEAKER_00: So I don't know, Indianapolis.
- 26:27SPEAKER_00: Uh uh, I I don't know.
- 26:28SPEAKER_00: I I I think let me give you the test.
- 26:30SPEAKER_00: Let me give you the test.
- 26:32SPEAKER_03: Uh-huh.
- 26:33SPEAKER_00: Pretend you're the gent, the coach GM, and you go home and say, hey, baby, and Yulia says, Yes, my love, what is it?
- 26:41SPEAKER_03: Huh.
- 26:42SPEAKER_03: You obviously you obviously haven't talked to Yulia recently.
- 26:44SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 26:45SPEAKER_03: Right.
- 26:45SPEAKER_00: You go, we just signed Daniel Jones to two years, 88 million.
- 26:50SPEAKER_00: See how she treats you at that later on in the night.
- 26:54SPEAKER_00: See if you're making a bubble bath or if you're sleeping on the couch.
- 26:57SPEAKER_03: Yeah, right, right.
- 26:59SPEAKER_03: Yeah, it's it's it's a hard sell.
- 27:02SPEAKER_03: I mean, it it really it really is, but uh okay.
- 27:06SPEAKER_00: Two to one odds.
- 27:08SPEAKER_00: Will Daniel Jones have two to one touchdown interceptions next year?
- 27:15SPEAKER_00: Should he play eight games?
- 27:17SPEAKER_03: Eight games or more, two to one touchdown to interception ratio.
- 27:22SPEAKER_00: Yes.
- 27:24SPEAKER_03: For the Colts?
- 27:25SPEAKER_03: Yeah, he will.
- 27:26SPEAKER_00: Okay, we'll put that down for a dollar.
- 27:28SPEAKER_00: Okay, two to one odds.
- 27:29SPEAKER_00: Okay, hey, make sure you write that down.
- 27:30SPEAKER_00: I want all my money.
- 27:32unknown: Okay.
- 27:33SPEAKER_00: Cash at Zell or Cashiers.
- 27:36SPEAKER_03: Yeah, okay.
- 27:38SPEAKER_00: You're laughing.
- 27:39SPEAKER_00: Does this look like Facebook management?
- 27:41SPEAKER_03: Yeah, yeah.
- 27:41SPEAKER_03: Well, listen, I mean, you you have you have you have potentially three bucks coming your way.
- 27:45SPEAKER_03: This is gonna be this is gonna be all consuming for the next six months, you know.
- 27:49SPEAKER_00: This economy, every dollar matters, yeah, right.
- 27:50SPEAKER_00: Exactly.
- 27:54SPEAKER_00: But okay.
- 27:55SPEAKER_00: All right, that's all the free agent news we got you for you.
- 27:58SPEAKER_00: Bottom line for me is you know what?
- 28:01SPEAKER_00: Daniel Jones is so overpaid, but this is America, and that's why I love this country.
- 28:07SPEAKER_03: Uh bottom, bottom line for me, this is a really weak free agent market.
- 28:15SPEAKER_03: Uh, and and there's a reason, Daniel.
- 28:17SPEAKER_03: It's a weak free agent market, and a particularly weak free agent market for quarterbacks, and that's why Daniel Jones got paid what he did.
- 28:24SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 28:25SPEAKER_00: Um, your president and mine met with uh a bunch of uh leaders in the sports world, none of whom play the game, uh, about college football last week in a uh college football forum.
- 28:39SPEAKER_00: Wanted to talk about how to get this thing under control.
- 28:43SPEAKER_00: Let me just say this.
- 28:47SPEAKER_00: And I say this out of love, uh-huh, of course, as you do everybody.
- 28:51SPEAKER_00: Everybody who loves college football, I'm just gonna say it.
- 28:56SPEAKER_00: Every single one of those guys who spoke, and women are so full of poop, it's unbelievable.
- 29:03SPEAKER_00: Yeah, and here's what I mean.
- 29:06SPEAKER_00: And this is when you know that they're full of poop.
- 29:09SPEAKER_00: When they start talking about academics, and oh my god, a guy like Jeremy, he's not going to be able to graduate when they have never cared.
- 29:18SPEAKER_01: Never graduated.
- 29:20SPEAKER_01: Never, ever.
- 29:20SPEAKER_00: Now they like for you to graduate, and they say, Hey, Jacques Pink, we we'd love for you to graduate.
- 29:27SPEAKER_00: Your academics are important.
- 29:29SPEAKER_00: Hey, coach, I got a biology lab, and I can only take it from three to five Tuesday and Thursday.
- 29:35SPEAKER_00: Son, you seem like you need another major to me if you want to play this.
- 29:39SPEAKER_01: Right.
- 29:40SPEAKER_00: That happens all the time.
- 29:41SPEAKER_00: Or I'm thinking about majoring in physiochemistry.
- 29:45SPEAKER_00: Son, I don't think that's a good idea.
- 29:49SPEAKER_00: I think uh intermediary studies is I think a comms degree is is in your future.
- 29:56SPEAKER_03: So they don't care, man.
- 29:58SPEAKER_03: Well, my my takeaway from it, I came up with a takeaway that is going to be a little bit couple of couple of leaps, if you have to go with me on it, is it was so silly and so unwieldy, and so many different voices.
- 30:17SPEAKER_03: And the idea was there would be an executive order that is, and even the president himself said it, that is essentially unenforceable or would be blocked or sued in some form.
- 30:28SPEAKER_03: Right.
- 30:28SPEAKER_03: And I I'm sitting there kind of reading about it, looking at it, and going, you know what?
- 30:32SPEAKER_03: You know what I think's gonna happen?
- 30:34SPEAKER_03: With it.
- 30:35SPEAKER_03: I think the if the SEC and the Big Ten can get along, I think the SEC and the Big Ten are gonna look around and go, you know what?
- 30:43SPEAKER_03: We're not gonna wait around for this.
- 30:45SPEAKER_03: We're gonna break away and do our own thing.
- 30:47SPEAKER_03: And that's gonna become a de facto uh Saturday professional football league with about, I think there's 38 teams between the two conferences.
- 30:55SPEAKER_03: Maybe they add two more teams.
- 30:57SPEAKER_03: I think you're gonna be a de facto 40-team college football conference, and that's what's gonna, that's what's gonna end up happening.
- 31:04SPEAKER_03: Uh, that there is no, you know, the the the NCAA has been so ineffective for so long.
- 31:12SPEAKER_03: Uh, I don't see that being resolved.
- 31:14SPEAKER_03: And I think it's gonna take something like that uh to break away to form the beginning of some some modicum of structure to college sports, and I think that's gonna happen.
- 31:29SPEAKER_00: Well, that's why the NCAA has no juice, which is why they can't win any court cases.
- 31:33SPEAKER_00: Nobody it's what they think.
- 31:36SPEAKER_03: So you're gonna foist a structure on all these, you're gonna try to foist a structure across all college football.
- 31:44SPEAKER_03: Of course, essentially, this is a college football play because of the money that it generates.
- 31:48SPEAKER_03: And if I'm if I'm some of these college football programs or I'm the SEC in the Big Ten, I'm looking around and going, I don't really need you.
- 31:54SPEAKER_03: What we do is the SEC needs the Big Ten and the Big Ten needs the SEC.
- 32:00SPEAKER_03: But beyond that, I don't think it matters.
- 32:02SPEAKER_03: And maybe you end up expanding each conference to 25 teams, so there's 50 teams, or whatever it is, or you expand it into four, four, you know, four, you know, the you know, what the old Big Ten East, Big Ten West, or two divisions in the Big Ten and two divisions in the SEC, and they're each 12 teams, and you just end up doing a playoff format, end up doing a playoff format like that.
- 32:25SPEAKER_03: That's what I think is gonna happen.
- 32:27SPEAKER_00: And because I think that's the only that's the only way that it's gonna work, is you do need to have now those are the are the are the kids who play for those teams students, or are they just athletes?
- 32:41SPEAKER_00: Are they students now?
- 32:43SPEAKER_00: Well, there some of them are probably about like how many kind of well see that's a very good question.
- 32:50SPEAKER_00: On Ohio State's team, if they have 90 players, how many are true student athletes?
- 33:00SPEAKER_00: See, I would say probably 55 or so.
- 33:06SPEAKER_00: Maybe 60.
- 33:08SPEAKER_00: Because some cats realize right away, I better get this.
- 33:11SPEAKER_01: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 33:13SPEAKER_00: Yeah, wait.
- 33:14SPEAKER_00: You know, they're not that good, or relatively speaking, they're like, right.
- 33:17SPEAKER_00: I'm here, yeah, I better get this degree.
- 33:20SPEAKER_03: Right.
- 33:21SPEAKER_03: Right.
- 33:21SPEAKER_03: Yeah, I do do I think let me ask you this question.
- 33:24SPEAKER_03: How many are student athletes first of those 90?
- 33:28SPEAKER_03: That's not 55 or 60.
- 33:30SPEAKER_00: There are that's the that's the third, anybody who's third team or below.
- 33:34SPEAKER_03: Yeah, I agree with that.
- 33:36SPEAKER_00: At a non-skill position.
- 33:38SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 33:38SPEAKER_00: So that's probably about uh 15%.
- 33:41SPEAKER_03: The the the money that's generated for these sports is not by the third team, as we know, it's by the top players who are they're they're paid, they're paid professional athletes, you know, who happen to be students.
- 33:54SPEAKER_03: They're not students who are uh students who are athletes, and that's okay because that's what it is right now.
- 33:59SPEAKER_03: Uh and and I I I think that's the it's such an unwieldy number of schools and teams and and competing voices that I think because nothing will be agreed upon and nothing will end up happening, I think I'd have to look at the college football playoff uh television uh contract, but it'll be something will be done in conjunction with that, and it'll be an SEC Big Ten or some sort of facsimile of the top 50 teams or the top 40 teams that are going to be its own its own entity.
- 34:36SPEAKER_03: Uh, because that's that's you know, even if you just even look at the NFL right now, every year in the NFL, maybe six to eight teams maybe have a chance to win the Super Bowl every year.
- 34:49SPEAKER_03: And if you look at you look at college football, every year maybe six to eight teams have a chance to win.
- 34:55SPEAKER_00: Maybe it's more like yeah, closer to six than eight.
- 34:59SPEAKER_03: Yeah, it's probably like I mean, it's probably closer to four, you know.
- 35:04SPEAKER_03: And you so you don't care about team 31, you know, you don't care about team 41 to you know 110.
- 35:13SPEAKER_03: They don't matter.
- 35:14SPEAKER_03: And quickly, I think quickly that's what's gonna happen, and I think you'll end up with you know a division, you know, the SEC Big Ten equivalent championship, and and then you'll have a lower level championship team, a lower level championship for for the other teams.
- 35:29SPEAKER_03: I don't think I think it's the only way it's gonna work out because I don't think I think there's too much power in the hands of the SEC and the Big Ten football teams.
- 35:37SPEAKER_03: I think the the NCAA and the broader kind of construct of a large unwieldy organization isn't gonna work, and I think by default that's what's gonna happen.
- 35:48SPEAKER_00: Well, ultimately, for them to enforce the rules that they want, they can't.
- 35:53SPEAKER_00: And then I think if they make them employees, there's so much other stuff involved, it just doesn't work right.
- 35:59SPEAKER_01: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 36:01SPEAKER_00: But um, the reason you know, it's uh it's it's a it's an interesting quandary.
- 36:07SPEAKER_00: Uh, but I chuckle, and it could just be me when they say stuff like, Well, you know, fans don't like all the transfers, they don't know who's the players on the team, our blase, blase.
- 36:17SPEAKER_00: Yeah, and I go the thing about college football in general is you root for the name on the front of the jersey.
- 36:26SPEAKER_00: You're a bucke, I'm down with you.
- 36:29SPEAKER_01: Right.
- 36:29SPEAKER_00: You play for Michigan, you suck.
- 36:32SPEAKER_00: Oh, you transferred to Ohio State, I'm down with you.
- 36:35SPEAKER_00: Oh, you transferred to Michigan, you suck.
- 36:37SPEAKER_00: Yeah, like you know, yeah.
- 36:39SPEAKER_03: College football is very tribal, with no question about it.
- 36:43SPEAKER_00: So that thing doesn't fly with me.
- 36:46SPEAKER_03: Yeah, I I think that's I think that's right.
- 36:49SPEAKER_03: I I just don't see this working other than the Big Ten and the SEC or the big schools getting together and saying, you guys can argue while you guys are arguing about whatever it is you're arguing about, this is what we're gonna do.
- 37:01SPEAKER_03: And they're gonna end up doing it, and you know what's gonna happen?
- 37:04SPEAKER_03: That's where all the money is, and that's where all the power is, and that's what's gonna be accepted.
- 37:09SPEAKER_00: Yeah, because money and power rule, baby.
- 37:11SPEAKER_00: That's that's right.
- 37:12SPEAKER_00: And that will segue.
- 37:13SPEAKER_00: So the bottom line for me is you gotta do what you gotta do, and um, you know, the the the administrators gawking, hawking, screaming about this, they don't care about the athletes, and so you know, shut up.
- 37:30SPEAKER_03: Uh the bottom line for me is that for the last 50, 60 years, there's been thought or desire, or there's been real uh two professional football leagues that have kind of always been, whether it's the AFL and the NFL, now we're gonna come with two equivalent of professional football leagues, the NFL.
- 37:52SPEAKER_03: And then ultimately this is gonna morph into the college football league, which is gonna be a quasi-professional league that's gonna happen to play on Saturdays and happen to play with college teams.
- 38:04SPEAKER_03: I think that's gonna be the ultimate outgrowth of all these quote-unquote student athlete college sports conversations that are going on right now.
- 38:12SPEAKER_00: As long as EA Sports makes a video game that takes all that into consideration, I'm good.
- 38:18SPEAKER_00: Uh and now we have the most amusing part of the show where we dip our toes into the Ohio State conversation of the week.
- 38:27SPEAKER_00: And imagine my surprise when I saw a clip on uh TikTok or Twitter or X or something that said Bruce Thornton is now Ohio State's all-time leading basketball scorer.
- 38:43SPEAKER_00: And I was like, okay, first off, I literally heard Bruce Thornton's name about sometime in the last month.
- 38:52SPEAKER_02: Right.
- 38:53SPEAKER_00: And I go, oh, okay.
- 38:54SPEAKER_00: And then I heard Matt Painter, the Purdue coach, waxing poetic about him about two weeks ago.
- 39:01SPEAKER_00: He stayed four years and he's the kind of guy you build around, and uh and I said, Oh, okay, that's cool.
- 39:08SPEAKER_00: And then I go, wow, he's the all-time leading scorer.
- 39:11SPEAKER_00: So I was shocked.
- 39:13SPEAKER_03: Okay.
- 39:14SPEAKER_03: Um, I I share your sentiment.
- 39:17SPEAKER_03: And when by the way, I I hadn't heard Matt Painter's comments like that, but when Matt Painter makes comments like that, that is a that's another way of saying he's a pretty good college player, but he'll never really go very high in the pros, right?
- 39:29SPEAKER_03: Well, that's why he did four years.
- 39:30SPEAKER_03: Yeah, that's exactly right.
- 39:32SPEAKER_03: So he's a leading scorer.
- 39:35SPEAKER_03: Who are the second and third leading scorers in Ohio State basketball history?
- 39:40SPEAKER_00: Okay, now I had to look this up.
- 39:42SPEAKER_03: I had to look this up.
- 39:43SPEAKER_00: I feel confident about number two.
- 39:46SPEAKER_03: Okay, who's that?
- 39:47SPEAKER_00: And if I'm wrong, my feelings are gonna be hurt.
- 39:49SPEAKER_03: I think you might be wrong.
- 39:50SPEAKER_03: I think you're gonna say the wrong name, but go ahead.
- 39:52SPEAKER_00: Dennis Hobson should be number two.
- 39:54SPEAKER_03: Dennis Hobson is number two, very good.
- 39:56SPEAKER_00: All right, see, I feel good because I was in school and Dennis Hobson was playing.
- 39:59SPEAKER_00: Yeah, yeah.
- 40:00SPEAKER_00: And for whatever reason, we're Facebook friends, and while we don't talk often on Facebook, perhaps we interact once or twice a year.
- 40:08SPEAKER_00: We do interact once or twice a year.
- 40:11SPEAKER_00: Now, number three, that's a little more difficult.
- 40:15SPEAKER_01: Uh-huh.
- 40:16SPEAKER_00: I'm going to take a shot in the dark.
- 40:19SPEAKER_01: Uh-huh.
- 40:20SPEAKER_00: Complete shot in the dark.
- 40:22SPEAKER_01: Uh-huh.
- 40:23SPEAKER_00: I'm going to guess Jerry Lucas.
- 40:27SPEAKER_03: No.
- 40:28SPEAKER_03: It is not Jerry Lucas.
- 40:29SPEAKER_03: It's it's a good guess.
- 40:31SPEAKER_00: Okay, is it old?
- 40:32SPEAKER_00: Is it old school or new school?
- 40:34SPEAKER_03: It is right around, he's right around our age.
- 40:40SPEAKER_00: Damn.
- 40:43SPEAKER_03: When I say it, you'll go, okay.
- 40:46SPEAKER_00: See, now I gotta think about I'm thinking about guys who who I'll give you a hint.
- 40:51SPEAKER_03: He played in he played professionally for a number of years, probably known professionally.
- 40:56SPEAKER_03: He played on the Knicks.
- 40:58SPEAKER_03: He went to East High School, which no longer exists in Columbus, Ohio.
- 41:03SPEAKER_00: You know, uh, these are so many guesses, I feel dumb now.
- 41:06SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 41:06SPEAKER_03: Who is it?
- 41:07SPEAKER_03: Herb Williams.
- 41:10SPEAKER_00: You don't you don't even remember Herb Williams.
- 41:12SPEAKER_00: I know Herb Williams.
- 41:14SPEAKER_00: I've heard the name.
- 41:15SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I would have never guessed Herb.
- 41:16SPEAKER_00: Herb Williams was nowhere in my consciousness.
- 41:20SPEAKER_00: Kelvin Ramsey was in my consciousness.
- 41:22SPEAKER_03: Kelvin Ramsey was a player.
- 41:24SPEAKER_00: You know, Clark Kellogg was in my consciousness.
- 41:27SPEAKER_00: Yeah, there was a I was like, Jim Jackson didn't play long enough.
- 41:30SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I was like, maybe Jay Burston.
- 41:33SPEAKER_00: Uh those were all people.
- 41:35SPEAKER_00: Herb Williams, never in my consciousness.
- 41:37SPEAKER_03: Herb Williams was a great, he's a center.
- 41:39SPEAKER_03: He was a great.
- 41:40SPEAKER_03: I remember him now that you said it, but I would have never guessed Herb Williams.
- 41:45SPEAKER_03: Yeah, there was there's a there was a stretch in the 80s, uh, really in the not that anybody cares, but like in the 80s, where Ohio State had some very good basketball teams and teams with some very good players.
- 41:57SPEAKER_03: Kelvin Ramsey.
- 41:59SPEAKER_00: You know, um we had a we had a good 10-year stretch, man, you know, recently.
- 42:05SPEAKER_00: And then our biggest issue was one and done's.
- 42:08SPEAKER_00: We get great players for a year, and then and that year'd be great, and then they'd leave, and you know, it's hard, it's hard to operate like that when you're not a basketball school, right?
- 42:18SPEAKER_00: Um, but I mean they had they had a nice probably 10-year run where they were in the final four or you know, one of the better teams in the country back when I used to know the players.
- 42:29SPEAKER_00: I can't outside of what's his name, Bruce Thornton.
- 42:32SPEAKER_00: Right, I can't name you another player on the team.
- 42:36SPEAKER_00: And I think the coach's name is John Diebler.
- 42:39SPEAKER_03: Yeah, it is.
- 42:40SPEAKER_00: It is played at Ohio State.
- 42:42SPEAKER_00: I believe he was a three-point shooter.
- 42:44SPEAKER_03: He that though those are true things.
- 42:46SPEAKER_03: That that's true.
- 42:47SPEAKER_00: But I can't name you another dude on a neither can I have a guess.
- 42:52SPEAKER_03: Neither can I.
- 42:52SPEAKER_03: Do you know do you know where uh Bruce Thornton was Mr.
- 42:56SPEAKER_03: Basketball his senior year at a I I didn't know this?
- 43:01SPEAKER_03: At what's in what state was he Mr.
- 43:03SPEAKER_03: Basketball?
- 43:04SPEAKER_03: I would never have guessed it.
- 43:06SPEAKER_00: Okay, I'm going to guess because of the nature of the question.
- 43:10SPEAKER_00: I think it's an un is it is it an unusual state?
- 43:14SPEAKER_03: No.
- 43:14SPEAKER_00: Oh, okay.
- 43:16SPEAKER_00: So I would say Indiana.
- 43:19SPEAKER_03: Uh Georgia.
- 43:20SPEAKER_03: He was Mr.
- 43:20SPEAKER_03: Basketball in Georgia.
- 43:22SPEAKER_00: Really?
- 43:22SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 43:24SPEAKER_03: Which makes me think basketball in Georgia probably isn't that great.
- 43:28SPEAKER_03: Say again?
- 43:29SPEAKER_00: He didn't transfer from anywhere?
- 43:30SPEAKER_03: No, he can't.
- 43:31SPEAKER_00: He's he's four years at Ohio State.
- 43:33SPEAKER_00: So we got Georgia's Mr.
- 43:34SPEAKER_00: Basketball.
- 43:36SPEAKER_00: So he wasn't that good coming out of high school.
- 43:37SPEAKER_03: Yeah, well, that's what I think.
- 43:38SPEAKER_03: Again, I did all of about three minutes of research on it, but yeah, I think that was sort of my takeaway, also.
- 43:44SPEAKER_00: But I mean, I ain't mad at.
- 43:46SPEAKER_00: And you know what?
- 43:47SPEAKER_00: Let me tell you, real talk.
- 43:49SPEAKER_00: The best thing this and I believe people when they say this about NIL and transfer, I believe this a hundred percent.
- 43:58SPEAKER_00: The best thing Bruce Thornton has done.
- 44:00SPEAKER_00: Done okay.
- 44:00SPEAKER_00: He stayed four years, he's an all-time leading score.
- 44:03SPEAKER_00: But now, if you live in Columbus or the surrounding area, when Bruce Thornton comes in and says, Hey, I'd like to get a job here, you go, Oh, you played for the Buckeyes for four years.
- 44:15SPEAKER_00: He's got name recognition, and I think in the city of Columbus and its suburbs, he can he can function as off his name and what he's done around town.
- 44:25SPEAKER_00: And that's the downside.
- 44:26SPEAKER_00: If you transfer every year, you belong to nobody.
- 44:30SPEAKER_00: And you know, me and Pink are talking why?
- 44:32SPEAKER_00: Because we went to the same school 40 years ago, right?
- 44:34SPEAKER_00: Um, and you've got friends and people that you meet there that create relationships forever.
- 44:40SPEAKER_00: And when you're at four schools in four years, it's hard to do that.
- 44:45SPEAKER_00: Like, do you consider Joe Burrow tragedic together if we were on the Air Force?
- 44:50SPEAKER_00: We would have never got on the basketball court together.
- 44:52SPEAKER_03: Right.
- 44:53SPEAKER_03: So do you think Joe Burrow, do you consider him a buckeye?
- 44:56SPEAKER_03: You consider him uh LSU?
- 44:58SPEAKER_00: Who do you um I consider him an LSU Tiger who went to Ohio State?
- 45:05SPEAKER_01: Oh, okay.
- 45:07SPEAKER_00: Like, I mean, you can't claim Joe Burrow.
- 45:11SPEAKER_00: I mean, you can, but I don't feel any need to because Dwayne Haskins did everything.
- 45:17SPEAKER_00: Whatever Joe, whatever Joe Burrow would have done, Dwayne Haskins did at Ohio State.
- 45:23SPEAKER_00: They just didn't.
- 45:23SPEAKER_03: I agree.
- 45:24SPEAKER_03: I agree.
- 45:24SPEAKER_03: I think he's an LSU guy, but I hear a lot of Ohio State, a lot of Ohio State fans are claiming him.
- 45:29SPEAKER_00: On the Ohio State fan meter, uh-huh, I'm about an eight and a half.
- 45:34SPEAKER_03: Out of what?
- 45:35SPEAKER_03: Ten?
- 45:35SPEAKER_00: Out of ten.
- 45:36SPEAKER_03: Uh-huh.
- 45:37SPEAKER_00: Meaning, I'm really into my team.
- 45:39SPEAKER_00: I get upset when they lose.
- 45:41SPEAKER_00: I bitch and moan, uh stuff.
- 45:43SPEAKER_00: But I ain't never gonna text like people who are nines and tens, when somebody chooses to go to another school, they text them, your life will never been been as good as it was.
- 45:53SPEAKER_00: Right, right.
- 45:54SPEAKER_00: Um, right.
- 45:55SPEAKER_00: You know, I don't know the too deep, and then I don't know 24 to 25 recruits coming in.
- 46:00SPEAKER_00: Those people are nines and tens.
- 46:02SPEAKER_01: Yeah, yeah.
- 46:03SPEAKER_00: Uh and nines and tens are the only ones claiming Joe Burrow.
- 46:06SPEAKER_01: Right.
- 46:07SPEAKER_00: You know what I'm saying?
- 46:08SPEAKER_00: I'm definitely state.
- 46:10unknown: Yeah.
- 46:11SPEAKER_00: Barely lost out the starting job to Dwayne Haskins.
- 46:14SPEAKER_00: Dwayne Haskins played, and you see why he lost the job out barely.
- 46:18SPEAKER_00: Dwayne Haskins was a first round pick in the draft.
- 46:22SPEAKER_00: I mean, you ain't gotta claim Joe Burrow.
- 46:25SPEAKER_03: Yeah, no, I I agree.
- 46:26SPEAKER_03: I'm I'm I'm probably crit.
- 46:29SPEAKER_03: Yeah, I'm probably about the same.
- 46:30SPEAKER_03: I'm probably about I'm probably about an eight and a half.
- 46:33SPEAKER_03: The only reason I might be slightly higher is that I grew up in Columbus.
- 46:37SPEAKER_03: So it's kind of a little bit more, so but I'm definitely not in the nines.
- 46:40SPEAKER_03: There's no way.
- 46:41SPEAKER_00: Uh no, that's why I don't know nobody on the basketball team, right?
- 46:45SPEAKER_00: Or we're in the nines and they know everybody, man.
- 46:48SPEAKER_03: Yeah, or you know, or the fact that the women's hockey team is like the probably the best program at the school, and we didn't know that either.
- 46:54SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 46:54SPEAKER_00: Okay, see, this is a good test.
- 46:56SPEAKER_00: Who is the top football recruit that Ohio State signed is coming to campus next year?
- 47:03SPEAKER_03: It's it's uh what is it, Chris Henry, the receiver, I think.
- 47:06SPEAKER_00: Okay, maybe that's it.
- 47:07SPEAKER_00: Yeah, who's the second best?
- 47:09SPEAKER_03: No idea.
- 47:10SPEAKER_00: Okay, see, I I don't either.
- 47:12unknown: Yeah, right.
- 47:12SPEAKER_00: I literally have no idea, right?
- 47:14SPEAKER_00: Like, I don't even have a guess.
- 47:16SPEAKER_00: I can't even give you a name.
- 47:17SPEAKER_00: Yeah, my boy Albert Breer, one of my good friends, he can probably give you the top ten.
- 47:22SPEAKER_00: Oh, sure.
- 47:23SPEAKER_00: If you can't get you top ten, he can definitely give you top five.
- 47:27SPEAKER_00: But, you know, he's a nine.
- 47:30SPEAKER_00: He could be a nine and a half.
- 47:33SPEAKER_00: Uh, you know, but that's the difference.
- 47:37SPEAKER_00: Yeah, yeah, no, no, no.
- 47:39SPEAKER_00: Everybody understands that.
- 47:41SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 47:41SPEAKER_00: And uh with that, very passionate conversation about Ohio State basketball and what it means to be an Ohio State fan.
- 47:48SPEAKER_00: Uh, we will see you next week on another edition of the bottom line on sports.
- 47:53SPEAKER_00: He's Jeremy Pink.
- 47:54SPEAKER_00: I'm John Jacques Taylor.
- 47:56SPEAKER_00: Good day.
- 47:57SPEAKER_03: All right.
- 47:57SPEAKER_03: See you, see you next week, everybody.
- 47:59SPEAKER_03: And I'm really glad I got to mention the name Herb Williams.
- 48:01SPEAKER_03: That makes me take me way back.
