- 0:35Speaker 1: of you today we are set up over In the bistro,
- 0:40Speaker 1: next to the deli, next to the sushi counter.
- 0:43Speaker 2: Yes, that's right.
- 0:44Speaker 3: Dismissed Marketplace has a fresh-made daily sushi counter. Great stuff
- 0:50Speaker 3: up here and incredible deals going on. Our friends at
- 0:53Speaker 3: Pepsi are once again hooking us up today. We've got
- 0:56Speaker 3: two pairs of tickets to give away to the Utah
- 1:00Speaker 3: versus Utah State game. It does come with a small caveat.
- 1:05Speaker 3: You've got to buy some Pepsi products. I need $ 35
- 1:08Speaker 3: or more in Pepsi purchases. Show me the receipt, and
- 1:12Speaker 3: we'll give you a pair of game tickets. We also
- 1:14Speaker 3: have tailgate passes at the Smith's Tailgate. We've got Smith's
- 1:17Speaker 3: gift cards. It is going to be a great day
- 1:20Speaker 3: here in Woods Cross on the Sean O'Connell Show. And,
- 1:26Speaker 3: of course, we're marching closer towards a weekend where Utah's
- 1:29Speaker 3: got a great chance to go 3-0. We put the
- 1:34Speaker 3: poll question out yesterday about whether or not this team
- 1:37Speaker 3: was better, worse, or kind of equivalent to what we
- 1:41Speaker 3: saw last year.
- 1:42Speaker 2: 350-ish votes.
- 1:43Speaker 3: 62% of you think that this team is better than
- 1:46Speaker 3: last year's team. Of course, last year's team ended up
- 1:49Speaker 3: winning 11 football games. Last year's team was 10-2 in
- 1:52Speaker 3: the regular season. They lost only two of the eventual
- 1:56Speaker 3: conference championship game contenders.
- 1:59Speaker 2: Texas Tech, obviously, and BYU.
- 2:02Speaker 3: Both of those games Especially the BYU game, I think
- 2:06Speaker 3: a couple of plays here and there could have gone
- 2:08Speaker 3: significantly differently. Even if you look back, if you re-watch
- 2:12Speaker 3: that Texas Tech game, Utah had its opportunities and things
- 2:16Speaker 3: kind of broke in the fourth quarter for Texas Tech.
- 2:19Speaker 3: But if this team is equivalent to last year's team,
- 2:23Speaker 3: or better like a lot of you think, then Utah
- 2:26Speaker 3: State should not be too tough of a problem.
- 2:28Speaker 2: Utah State should not be a test that you cannot pass.
- 2:32Speaker 3: This one is really interesting for me because this Aggies
- 2:35Speaker 3: squad has some warts of their own. They've got some
- 2:39Speaker 3: things to figure out, but they've also got a couple
- 2:42Speaker 3: of unique, I don't know if advantages is the right
- 2:46Speaker 3: way to say it, but they've got a couple of
- 2:48Speaker 3: unique quirks to them that could make things a little
- 2:52Speaker 3: bit more difficult for your Utah football team. Houston, Texas
- 2:57Speaker 3: Tech tonight on Fox, 6 p.m.
- 2:59Speaker 2: Kickoff.
- 3:00Speaker 3: Miami is playing Wake Forest. In an ACC matchup, both
- 3:04Speaker 3: of those teams are 2-0, as are the Big 12
- 3:08Speaker 3: contenders from Texas, Houston and Texas Tech. So a couple
- 3:13Speaker 3: of good games tonight, a full slate of great games
- 3:15Speaker 3: this weekend, a really interesting Thursday night NFL game last
- 3:19Speaker 3: night where I think that there's a lot of overreaction
- 3:23Speaker 3: happening right now to how bad the Lions looked. The
- 3:28Speaker 3: Lions are down two starting safeties right now.
- 3:33Speaker 2: And they were going against Josh Allen.
- 3:35Speaker 3: The Buffalo Bills are a lot of people's, at least AFC,
- 3:39Speaker 3: favorite this year. Plenty of people's Super Bowl favorite this year.
- 3:44Speaker 3: And it was a special occasion. It was the inaugural
- 3:48Speaker 3: game at the brand-new Highmark Stadium in Orchard Park. There's
- 3:51Speaker 3: a lot of reasons why that game was not going
- 3:54Speaker 3: to go all that well for the Detroit Lions. They
- 3:57Speaker 3: have some things to figure out defensively, certainly. They are
- 4:00Speaker 3: a bad defensive team right now. Aiden Hutchinson is, in
- 4:04Speaker 3: my opinion, inexcusably exhausted in this game. I don't know
- 4:11Speaker 3: if he had some kind of nagging injury or a
- 4:14Speaker 3: surgery I'm not aware of, some sort of issue where
- 4:17Speaker 3: Aiden Hutchinson was not ready to be in football shape
- 4:22Speaker 3: coming into the football season, but man.
- 4:24Speaker 2: He was gassed out last night.
- 4:26Speaker 3: And I get it, he's drawn double teams and people
- 4:29Speaker 3: are throwing everything at him and He's an effort player,
- 4:32Speaker 3: so he's always going to push to the red line.
- 4:34Speaker 2: But maybe he's ill? I don't know.
- 4:38Speaker 3: That was not a great game for Maiden Hutchinson, and
- 4:41Speaker 3: they need him to be great. Jack Campbell, you need
- 4:43Speaker 3: Jack Campbell to be great. So really interesting stuff from
- 4:47Speaker 3: that Lions-Bills game. And, look, Josh Allen is as delivered.
- 4:52Speaker 3: And how about our boy? How about the guy, the
- 4:55Speaker 3: former Ute, Dalton Kincaid, with another monster performance?
- 4:59Speaker 2: He is now back-to-back week's. with some big numbers in
- 5:03Speaker 2: the NFL.
- 5:03Speaker 3: And only two games so far this season, Dalton Kincaid
- 5:08Speaker 3: leads his team.
- 5:10Speaker 2: He leads all tight ends in the NFL.
- 5:13Speaker 3: He has 225 yards and a touchdown through two games
- 5:17Speaker 3: on only 12 catches. He is averaging 18.8 yards per catch.
- 5:23Speaker 3: This is Dalton Kincaid versus USC at Rice-Eccles Stadium level
- 5:28Speaker 3: of production.
- 5:29Speaker 2: And I tell you what, I love it. I'm here
- 5:31Speaker 2: for it. I'm happy to see it. Even though I
- 5:35Speaker 2: don't really root for the Bills, I don't know why.
- 5:39Speaker 2: They just rub me the wrong way, always have.
- 5:42Speaker 3: I don't know if it goes back to the early days,
- 5:45Speaker 3: the old Tecmo Bowl days or whatever it was.
- 5:48Speaker 2: I've never been a Bills guy.
- 5:50Speaker 3: But this Buffalo team looks like they are a force
- 5:53Speaker 3: to be reckoned with in this 2026-2027 football season. in
- 5:58Speaker 3: the NFL, and we are off and running in college football,
- 6:02Speaker 3: NFL football. NHL hockey is right around the corner with
- 6:05Speaker 3: the Utah Mammoths starting practice yesterday, and the Utah Jazz
- 6:10Speaker 3: are 33 days away from tipping off their season, which
- 6:13Speaker 3: means we're going to start rolling back into some jazz coverage.
- 6:16Speaker 3: Gordy Chiesa is going to start joining us again on
- 6:19Speaker 3: the show. We're going to break down Utah versus Utah
- 6:23Speaker 3: State today. Bill Riley joins us in about 20 minutes.
- 6:27Speaker 2: We'll talk with him.
- 6:28Speaker 3: To the Utes about the third straight home game at
- 6:30Speaker 3: Rice-Eccles Stadium. Morgan Scali's third game here of this 2026 season.
- 6:37Speaker 2: What have we learned?
- 6:38Speaker 3: What do we still need to learn about this team?
- 6:40Speaker 3: You know what we'll talk about with Bill Riley. Lee
- 6:42Speaker 3: Sterling is going to drop by late in the noon hour.
- 6:47Speaker 3: We'll talk about the picks for the weekend.
- 6:50Speaker 2: By the way, I want to remind everyone my picks
- 6:52Speaker 2: that I gave out last weekend. I was 5-0. All right,
- 6:56Speaker 2: five picks on the weekend, five correct picks.
- 6:59Speaker 3: And certainly, surely, we'll go undefeated throughout the entire season
- 7:04Speaker 3: with the picks, right? So you've got Lee Sterling joining
- 7:08Speaker 3: us in our number two, and then coordinator's corner, Colton Swan.
- 7:12Speaker 3: We go into rotation, offensive coordinator, defensive coordinator. We started
- 7:16Speaker 3: week one with the D.C. Colton Swan, Colton Swan, then
- 7:20Speaker 3: Kevin McGibbon, Colton Swan again today at 1 o'clock. And
- 7:25Speaker 3: we're up here at the Smith's Marketplace in Woods Cross,
- 7:27Speaker 3: 614 West, 2600 South. We've got stuff to give away,
- 7:33Speaker 3: including the ESPN 700 taffy town packets. What I really
- 7:40Speaker 3: need is I need people to come and get these
- 7:41Speaker 3: things because I eat way too many of them. When
- 7:45Speaker 3: they're sitting on the table, I invariably rip into one,
- 7:49Speaker 3: and then I eat every piece of taffy. In each
- 7:52Speaker 3: of those things, let's see, there's two, four, six, there's
- 7:55Speaker 3: eight pieces of saltwater taffy in each of these, all right?
- 7:58Speaker 3: And I end up having two or three bags, which
- 8:02Speaker 3: is 16 to 24 pieces.
- 8:04Speaker 2: Of saltwater taffy.
- 8:05Speaker 3: You do the math, and you will be able to
- 8:08Speaker 3: figure out that is not good for me to be
- 8:09Speaker 3: doing at 43 years of age, all right?
- 8:12Speaker 2: So get up here to 614 West, 2600 South in
- 8:15Speaker 2: Woods Cross.
- 8:16Speaker 3: If you buy $ 35 worth of Pepsi product, we are
- 8:22Speaker 3: going to give you a pair of game tickets to
- 8:25Speaker 3: Utah versus Utah State.
- 8:26Speaker 2: Just show us your receipt. Those tickets are courtesy of
- 8:29Speaker 2: our friends at Pepsi. Also, how about this? I didn't
- 8:34Speaker 2: anticipate this today.
- 8:36Speaker 3: We've got these Gatorade overtime stainless steel bottle with screw
- 8:42Speaker 3: cap from Gatorade. A refillable water bottle situation from Gatorade.
- 8:48Speaker 3: The screw cap is fantastic because it It can't come off.
- 8:53Speaker 3: It's got a little retainer clip on it. So you
- 8:56Speaker 3: unscrew that thing, and it's still attached to the bottle.
- 8:59Speaker 3: It just kind of rotates down out of the way.
- 9:02Speaker 3: They are Signature Gatorade Orange. It's a high-quality bottle. There's
- 9:06Speaker 3: some heft to it. That's how you know, right? A
- 9:09Speaker 3: lot of this swag, this giveaway stuff, is, like, real janky.
- 9:13Speaker 3: You can tell because you pick it up, and it's
- 9:16Speaker 3: lighter than it looks.
- 9:17Speaker 2: This is the opposite.
- 9:18Speaker 3: This is a high-quality piece from Gatorade. It's got some heft,
- 9:21Speaker 3: all right? Come up here, throw up a U, say
- 9:25Speaker 3: go Utes, and I'll chuck this thing at you, and
- 9:28Speaker 3: you better catch it because it'll knock a tooth out
- 9:29Speaker 3: if you don't catch it, all right?
- 9:31Speaker 2: So we've got stuff to give away.
- 9:33Speaker 3: Is this a Starbucks blanket? A Starbucks fold-up blanket. We
- 9:38Speaker 3: are getting you ready for the slightly chillier weather that
- 9:43Speaker 3: is to come here in this lovely state of ours
- 9:46Speaker 3: as the leaves up in the high elevations are changing.
- 9:49Speaker 3: And we had a thunderstorm last night. This morning I
- 9:52Speaker 3: had a wonderful time riding. I took my daughter to
- 9:56Speaker 3: school on the e-bike this morning.
- 9:58Speaker 2: Dropped her off.
- 10:00Speaker 3: There was a very very slight drizzle when I dropped
- 10:03Speaker 3: her off as soon as she walked into the school
- 10:06Speaker 3: that very slight drizzle turned into a deluge of hail
- 10:10Speaker 3: and I was I was in shorts and a sweatshirt
- 10:14Speaker 3: on an e-bike riding back up the hill laughing at
- 10:18Speaker 3: myself being pelted in the face by little bits of hail. Thankfully,
- 10:23Speaker 3: it's not like it was up in Wasatch County yesterday,
- 10:26Speaker 3: where apparently, shout out to all you folks in Heber
- 10:29Speaker 3: and Midway, apparently there was golf ball-sized hail ripping into
- 10:33Speaker 3: people's trucks and cars and homes yesterday. It was just like,
- 10:39Speaker 3: it was barely called hail this morning, and it was brief.
- 10:42Speaker 3: But your boy was not exactly prepared from a wardrobe situation.
- 10:46Speaker 3: or practical vehicular transport standpoint.
- 10:49Speaker 2: Here we are. We made it. We're in Woods Cross,
- 10:52Speaker 2: and we're excited to talk a little bit of football.
- 10:58Speaker 2: Cade says, come on, OC.
- 10:59Speaker 3: If the Bills love the Utes, you should love the Bills.
- 11:02Speaker 3: They drafted a lot of our guys. They drafted three
- 11:05Speaker 3: of the– two of the guys. It's not a lot
- 11:07Speaker 3: of the guys.
- 11:08Speaker 2: They drafted two.
- 11:10Speaker 3: And because of my Weber State love, there's– They've had
- 11:15Speaker 3: a history of giving Weber State guys a couple of
- 11:17Speaker 3: chances in the last decade.
- 11:19Speaker 2: Or so, too. So I'm okay with the.
- 11:20Speaker 3: Bills, but I'm not going to jump on.
- 11:23Speaker 2: A bandwagon now when they're really good again. That's just ridiculous.
- 11:27Speaker 3: I always appreciate everyone texting in, 877-353-0700. We've got airing
- 11:33Speaker 3: of grievances today. You can bring them in at any
- 11:35Speaker 3: point during the show. I will read them when we
- 11:37Speaker 3: get to the airing of grievances, and we will keep
- 11:40Speaker 3: talking about this Utah versus Utah State matchup, which.
- 11:45Speaker 2: I want to dive into now.
- 11:47Speaker 3: It's a really interesting spot for Utah to find themselves.
- 11:52Speaker 3: You're going up against a Utah State team that in
- 11:56Speaker 3: two games has shown really two versions of itself. Utah
- 12:01Speaker 3: State in their first week of the season was inexcusably
- 12:06Speaker 3: embarrassingly bad. And you look at what happened against Idaho State,
- 12:11Speaker 3: a middling Big Sky team, 29-17 loss for the Aggies
- 12:17Speaker 3: in that game. And a lot of that is directly
- 12:20Speaker 3: translated to interceptions, to turnovers. McKay Hillstead in that game
- 12:26Speaker 3: threw three interceptions. Not giving yourself the right opportunities here.
- 12:33Speaker 2: As an Aggie offense.
- 12:36Speaker 3: Late in the game, they started going to Grady Brosterhaus.
- 12:39Speaker 3: Grady Brosterhaus, I believe, is going to be the starting
- 12:42Speaker 3: quarterback here. against the University of Utah. He started week
- 12:46Speaker 3: two against the Washington Huskies. He went 17-28, 196 yards
- 12:52Speaker 3: and two interceptions. He did also turn the ball over.
- 12:55Speaker 3: This is a problem for Utah State, and we have
- 12:59Speaker 3: been calling for this with the.
- 13:01Speaker 2: University of Utah.
- 13:02Speaker 3: I spent 30 minutes on the show yesterday ranting, raving,
- 13:07Speaker 3: begging for the guys that are almost there, that are
- 13:10Speaker 3: a a half step away or a better hand position
- 13:13Speaker 3: away or getting your head around a little bit faster away.
- 13:16Speaker 2: I've been begging for those guys to not only be there.
- 13:20Speaker 3: And in the position to make the play, but to
- 13:22Speaker 3: be the finisher, to make the play, to come down
- 13:24Speaker 3: with the interception, to force the fumble, to get the sack.
- 13:28Speaker 2: Utah State, the Utah State offense.
- 13:31Speaker 3: Has shown us in the last couple of weeks that
- 13:34Speaker 3: they are the type of team that you can exploit
- 13:37Speaker 3: some things and you can get over that hump against
- 13:40Speaker 3: the Aggies. Because the Idaho State Bengals did it, the
- 13:43Speaker 3: Washington Huskies did it, and the Huskies, they better be
- 13:46Speaker 3: glad that they did because this was a very, very
- 13:48Speaker 3: close game against Washington.
- 13:50Speaker 2: 16-14 the final in that one.
- 13:54Speaker 3: Obviously would have been a massive turnaround upset win for
- 13:57Speaker 3: Utah State had they been able to pull it out.
- 14:00Speaker 3: Ultimately Washington escapes by the skin of their teeth. And
- 14:06Speaker 3: it wasn't a bad game, really, for the Washington Huskies,
- 14:09Speaker 3: except for something that Utah's going to have to be
- 14:12Speaker 3: wary of.
- 14:14Speaker 2: They were not able to run the ball.
- 14:15Speaker 3: 33 carries for 107 yards for Washington. I don't think
- 14:24Speaker 3: Washington is as good in their running back room as
- 14:27Speaker 3: Utah is. I think that Washington, they have more experience
- 14:31Speaker 3: returning on their offensive line. I'm not in love with
- 14:35Speaker 3: the Washington offensive line, the very, very little that I've
- 14:37Speaker 3: seen of it. But Washington only was able to put 3.2
- 14:44Speaker 3: yards per carry on the board against this Utah State
- 14:47Speaker 3: Aggie defense. This Aggie team is Dr. Jekyll and Mr.
- 14:52Speaker 3: Hyde on the same team. On one side of the ball,
- 14:56Speaker 3: they are Missing Kevin McGibbon, we'll say that. On the
- 14:59Speaker 3: other side of the ball, Nick Howell and Jan Jorgensen
- 15:03Speaker 3: and all the guys over there, Frank Miley, all those
- 15:07Speaker 3: guys are doing a really excellent job of stopping the
- 15:10Speaker 3: run for Utah State. They gave up less than four
- 15:15Speaker 3: yards of carry to Idaho State. They gave up just
- 15:18Speaker 3: over three yards of carry to Washington. This is where
- 15:23Speaker 3: A big portion of the game is going to be
- 15:25Speaker 3: decided at Rice-Eccles Stadium tomorrow afternoon.
- 15:30Speaker 2: And my sincere hope is, because this is.
- 15:32Speaker 3: Utah State, all right, my real hope is that you
- 15:37Speaker 3: could scheme around this, right? You could play your strength
- 15:40Speaker 3: against their weakness. You could say, all right, cool, good
- 15:45Speaker 3: luck to everyone who wants to run the ball on
- 15:47Speaker 3: this Utah State team. I am going to let Devin
- 15:50Speaker 3: Dampier and Bird Ficklin and who knows who else gets
- 15:53Speaker 3: to throw a pass in this game three. But we're
- 15:58Speaker 3: going to get some quick routes going. We're going to
- 16:00Speaker 3: get the ball out of the hand fast, and we're
- 16:03Speaker 3: going to run and shoot, and we're going to gun our.
- 16:05Speaker 2: Way up and down the field.
- 16:07Speaker 3: And I, Kevin McGibbon, the Utah offensive coordinator, am just
- 16:11Speaker 3: going to scheme away from the defensive strength of Utah State.
- 16:18Speaker 2: I support that. I think that's great.
- 16:20Speaker 3: I want it to be the case in, like, the
- 16:23Speaker 3: first two quarters of football. But at some point in
- 16:26Speaker 3: this game, I want Utah to be able to pin
- 16:29Speaker 3: the ears back and say, all right, let's make sure
- 16:31Speaker 3: that we are capable of doing this. Against a team
- 16:35Speaker 3: that has demonstrated some ability to stop the run, let's
- 16:38Speaker 3: go ahead and impose our will and let's run on
- 16:40Speaker 3: these guys. Not to the detriment of success in the game,
- 16:45Speaker 3: not to, like, excessively prove a point to where you're
- 16:49Speaker 3: hurting yourself and you're not maximizing your scoring opportunities. You're
- 16:53Speaker 3: not setting yourself up for success. You're not letting Utah
- 16:56Speaker 3: State hang around too long. Personnel-wise, they don't have anything
- 17:01Speaker 3: that should be able to hang with the University of Utah. Defensively,
- 17:04Speaker 3: they got some guys, but even their best guys are
- 17:09Speaker 3: not equivalent to Utah's best guys.
- 17:12Speaker 2: They're just not.
- 17:12Speaker 3: That's the way That new Pac-12, the reconstructed Pac-12, is
- 17:17Speaker 3: like a high-mid major, if it's fair to call them that.
- 17:21Speaker 3: That's the way the personnel is going to be. Harrison
- 17:24Speaker 3: Taggart is now with the Utah State Aggies. This is
- 17:29Speaker 3: Harrison Taggart's, what, third school, fourth school maybe? Former Oregon Duck,
- 17:35Speaker 3: former Corner Canyon. Corner Canyon Charger, then went to Oregon,
- 17:41Speaker 3: I believe, then back to BYU. Now he's at Utah State. And,
- 17:46Speaker 3: you know, he's kind of a headline name on that defense.
- 17:49Speaker 3: He's got four tackles through a couple of games so far. So,
- 17:53Speaker 3: you know, he's a great athlete. He's a speedster. You're
- 17:57Speaker 3: not going to find a lot of guys that play
- 17:59Speaker 3: the linebacker position in college football that on a flat-out
- 18:03Speaker 3: open field can sprint as fast as he can, but...
- 18:07Speaker 3: There's a reason why he's at Utah State and why
- 18:09Speaker 3: he didn't stick the way that he wanted to in
- 18:12Speaker 3: the previous stops. So we're looking at a situation where
- 18:15Speaker 3: the University of Utah has a big opportunity to maybe
- 18:19Speaker 3: jump out to a bit of a lead here, get
- 18:22Speaker 3: the passing game going a little bit, push through a
- 18:27Speaker 3: touchdown or two, and then show us, show everybody that
- 18:31Speaker 3: there's offensive balance and you can run.
- 18:34Speaker 2: The football here. On Utah State. Go Utes. Here we go.
- 18:39Speaker 2: We got our first visitor of the day throwing up
- 18:41Speaker 2: a Go Utes. Collecting some prizes, I hope.
- 18:45Speaker 3: I want to make sure everyone who knows, when I'm
- 18:47Speaker 3: ranting and raving, I do want to.
- 18:49Speaker 2: Talk to everyone who comes up here.
- 18:50Speaker 3: But when I'm in the middle of a rant, I
- 18:53Speaker 3: got to stay, try not to let myself get too
- 18:57Speaker 3: distracted on the air here. But 614 West, 2600.
- 19:02Speaker 2: South in Woods Cross. Am I asking too much? If
- 19:06Speaker 2: I say, I don't just want Utah to win.
- 19:09Speaker 3: I want Utah to show us in this win that
- 19:11Speaker 3: they can run the ball against the stout run defense.
- 19:15Speaker 3: Is it asking to, am I nitpicking to a level
- 19:18Speaker 3: now where I've let my feel-goods from the first two
- 19:23Speaker 3: weeks create greed, create a situation where I'm not being realistic?
- 19:31Speaker 3: I feel like no. I feel like This is the
- 19:35Speaker 3: type of game, because you have a personnel advantage, because
- 19:37Speaker 3: you have an athleticism, size, speed advantage, when you talk
- 19:41Speaker 3: about 11 versus 11, that you should be able to
- 19:45Speaker 3: lean on it a little bit.
- 19:48Speaker 2: Again, not just.
- 19:49Speaker 3: for the sole purpose of proving a point but kind
- 19:52Speaker 3: of a little bit so that you can prove that
- 19:54Speaker 3: point if not to anybody else than just to yourself
- 19:59Speaker 3: just to your fan base that what we think about
- 20:02Speaker 3: you is the truth The flip side of that is
- 20:06Speaker 3: you have like a massive passing day potentially against Utah State.
- 20:14Speaker 2: Easier said than done. And then what?
- 20:17Speaker 3: And then we wonder for another week or two if
- 20:21Speaker 3: your running offense is as potent as we think it is.
- 20:25Speaker 3: I might be getting greedy here. Utah State, by the way,
- 20:28Speaker 3: in a reconstructed Pac-12, the top run defense and the
- 20:31Speaker 3: second best passing defense.
- 20:34Speaker 2: They're only getting.
- 20:35Speaker 3: They're only giving up five yards per attempt in the
- 20:38Speaker 3: passing game as well. And Washington thinks pretty highly of
- 20:43Speaker 3: their quarterback and thinks pretty highly of their wide receiver court.
- 20:46Speaker 3: Weren't able to do anything from a scoring perspective, at least.
- 20:50Speaker 3: Utah State's only given up a touchdown in the air
- 20:53Speaker 3: so far. They're right behind Colorado State, who, of course,
- 20:57Speaker 3: is a BYU opponent. Colorado State has intercepted their opponents
- 21:01Speaker 3: five times.
- 21:02Speaker 2: Already this year.
- 21:04Speaker 3: I don't want to say upset alert because I think
- 21:06Speaker 3: the Cougs are pretty darn good, but that's not going
- 21:09Speaker 3: to be easy either.
- 21:16Speaker 2: 877-353-0700.
- 21:25Speaker 3: Always love to hear from you on the text line,
- 21:29Speaker 3: at RealOCSports on Twitter as well.
- 21:32Speaker 4: Spencer was.
- 21:34Speaker 5: Need clarification on how you go and get those Utah
- 21:37Speaker 5: State tickets, O.C., speaking of the text line.
- 21:40Speaker 6: Uh-huh.
- 21:41Speaker 2: Come to Smith's in Woods Cross.
- 21:45Speaker 3: Stock up on the drinks for the weekend, for the barbecue,
- 21:49Speaker 3: you know, just for the storage room, for the tailgate, whatever.
- 21:53Speaker 2: If you can show me.
- 21:53Speaker 3: $ 35 or more in purchases of Pepsi products, we will
- 21:59Speaker 3: give you a pair of tickets.
- 22:01Speaker 2: I just need a Smith's receipt that says.
- 22:03Speaker 3: I was stocking up, and you've got to remember, like,
- 22:06Speaker 3: Pepsi products, that's a pretty extensive list. It's not just Pepsi.
- 22:11Speaker 3: We know that this is a Diet Coke state. We
- 22:14Speaker 3: know this is a Coke state in general. The umbrella
- 22:19Speaker 3: of products that qualify here is, like, the Starbucks drinks
- 22:25Speaker 3: that are, like, the prepackaged ones, the Pepsi products, the Dr.
- 22:29Speaker 2: Peppers, the Gatorades.
- 22:31Speaker 3: The Rockstar Energies, that kind of stuff.
- 22:36Speaker 2: And, you know, it's your boy. It's me. It's OC.
- 22:41Speaker 3: So if you are at, like, $ 30 worth of Pepsi
- 22:45Speaker 3: and $ 10 worth of burgers, you know I'm going to, yeah,
- 22:48Speaker 3: all right. But we've only got two pairs of tickets
- 22:51Speaker 3: to give away. So if you want to see them,
- 22:53Speaker 3: you've got to get out here, 614 West, 2600 South,
- 22:55Speaker 3: in Woods Cross. 877-353-0700 is how you always get a
- 23:03Speaker 3: hold of us.
- 23:04Speaker 2: I feel like I would be remiss also.
- 23:08Speaker 3: I know that we want to focus a lot on
- 23:10Speaker 3: a football Friday, on a game week. We want to
- 23:13Speaker 3: focus a lot on previewing Utah versus Utah State, and
- 23:16Speaker 3: we will do that with Bill Riley here in just
- 23:18Speaker 3: a few minutes. But I also, it's worthy of putting
- 23:23Speaker 3: in the opening segment of a show because it's big
- 23:26Speaker 3: news for the local market. Keontae George and the Utah
- 23:29Speaker 3: Jazz have agreed to a five-year, $ 157. 5 million extension with
- 23:36Speaker 3: the Utah Jazz. And I've seen the reaction to it
- 23:40Speaker 3: rolling through Twitter and all those things this morning. And
- 23:43Speaker 3: something that's really fascinating to me is that– When you
- 23:50Speaker 3: look at Keontae George's actual production and take out, as
- 23:55Speaker 3: some of these analytic sites are able to do, and
- 23:58Speaker 3: they take out, they kind of remove the tanking factor
- 24:02Speaker 3: from the Utah Jazz, that this is a contract kind
- 24:05Speaker 3: of right in the exact realm that he's supposed to
- 24:08Speaker 3: be from a numbers and a production standpoint.
- 24:11Speaker 2: And I know that there's a lot of.
- 24:15Speaker 3: Confidence already in the front office and what the Utah
- 24:18Speaker 3: Jazz does. have been able to do from the personnel
- 24:23Speaker 3: and roster construction perspective. A lot of people really believe
- 24:27Speaker 3: in the Anges. This is a five-year deal worth about
- 24:30Speaker 3: $ 31 million, $ 31. 5 million per year for Keontae George. And
- 24:36Speaker 3: I looked at a bunch of these analytics breakdowns and
- 24:41Speaker 3: what these formulaic things basically spit out is that he's
- 24:46Speaker 3: a $ 27 million to $ 35 million a year player based
- 24:50Speaker 3: on his production, based on his numbers. So the fact
- 24:52Speaker 3: that the Utah Jazz got this extension done at 16-ish
- 24:57Speaker 3: percent of their cap is.
- 25:00Speaker 2: I think it's a great move.
- 25:02Speaker 3: I think if you paid 20% or more of your
- 25:05Speaker 3: cap for Keontae George, people would start to look at
- 25:08Speaker 3: you with a bit of a side eye. We might
- 25:09Speaker 3: start to question, even if market prices dictated that, whether
- 25:13Speaker 3: it was going to be worth it for the Utah Jazz.
- 25:15Speaker 2: I think this spot... is kind of exactly where he
- 25:20Speaker 2: needs to.
- 25:20Speaker 3: Be, 23.6 points and 6.1 assists on 45% shooting and
- 25:28Speaker 3: 37% from three-point range last year. Most importantly, this Utah
- 25:35Speaker 3: Jazz front office, I think, envisions Keontae George and Darren
- 25:39Speaker 3: Peterson being Batman and Robin, a dynamic duo, a, dare
- 25:45Speaker 3: I say, Devin Dampier and Bird Ficklin on the basketball floor, right?
- 25:50Speaker 2: Their own little half-dollar situation.
- 25:53Speaker 3: So big news from the Utah Jazz perspective, and congratulations
- 25:58Speaker 3: to Keontae George. It's always really interesting to see this
- 26:01Speaker 3: when you've got guys that, you know, have kind of like.
- 26:05Speaker 2: Done a little bit of grinding.
- 26:06Speaker 3: They've improved, they've improved, they've improved, and now, you know,
- 26:10Speaker 3: the 16th pick of the 2023 draft is has become
- 26:14Speaker 3: a cornerstone piece or part of the core for this
- 26:18Speaker 3: Utah Jazz franchise as they get ready to turn the
- 26:21Speaker 3: page and actually try to compete. 16% of the salary cap,
- 26:29Speaker 3: by the way, is a bargain when you look at
- 26:31Speaker 3: some of the other guards and some of the other
- 26:33Speaker 3: guards with similar production in the league.
- 26:37Speaker 2: I will never put.
- 26:40Speaker 3: Steph Curry and Keontae George in the same sentence from
- 26:43Speaker 3: a skills or accomplishments comparison standpoint. But for the sake
- 26:47Speaker 3: of the math nicks out there, for the sake of
- 26:50Speaker 3: the numbers guys and gals out there, Steph Curry is
- 26:54Speaker 3: like 40% of the Warriors.
- 26:56Speaker 2: Salary cap.
- 26:58Speaker 3: And Keontae George, he's no Steph Curry, but you can
- 27:02Speaker 3: spend insane amounts of money on one single player. Other
- 27:06Speaker 3: teams have to do that. Jokic is a big, he's
- 27:10Speaker 3: 35% of the Nuggets salary cap. Keontae George coming in
- 27:15Speaker 3: at 16% as a guy who's like eventually probably going
- 27:19Speaker 3: to be the fourth best player, the third best player
- 27:21Speaker 3: in your starting lineup.
- 27:22Speaker 2: It's the right spot.
- 27:25Speaker 3: So credit to the Angels, credit to Keontae and his
- 27:28Speaker 3: agents for getting this done in a way that I
- 27:30Speaker 3: think facilitates success for the Utah Jazz moving forward. And
- 27:33Speaker 3: we'll have Gordie Chiesa on in the next couple weeks.
- 27:36Speaker 3: We'll talk about it with people. who are a little
- 27:39Speaker 3: bit more dialed in on the basketball front. But big
- 27:42Speaker 3: news for the Utah Jazz as we get ready for
- 27:45Speaker 3: Utah football game week as well. The Utah Mammoth are
- 27:48Speaker 3: about to start, and they've got all these good... This
- 27:51Speaker 3: might be something that when we get five, ten years
- 27:55Speaker 3: down the line, and the Smith Entertainment Group has ownership
- 28:00Speaker 3: in the Utah Mammoth and in the Utah Jazz, and
- 28:04Speaker 3: hopefully both of those franchises Most of those franchises show
- 28:08Speaker 3: us some success on the floor, on the ice, start
- 28:11Speaker 3: winning something meaningful. Part of the story that we're going
- 28:14Speaker 3: to tell there is the contracts. Because the Jazz don't have,
- 28:20Speaker 3: as far as I can tell, they don't have a
- 28:22Speaker 3: bad contract on the roster.
- 28:24Speaker 2: Not a really bad one. We'll find out how good
- 28:27Speaker 2: the Jaron Jackson Jr. spend is.
- 28:29Speaker 3: We'll find out if we maybe see a little overpayment
- 28:32Speaker 3: for Lowry Markkinen health-wise. But there's not a bad contract
- 28:37Speaker 3: on this Utah Jazz roster right now, and there's the
- 28:40Speaker 3: exact opposite on the Mammoth front as far as we
- 28:43Speaker 3: can tell.
- 28:43Speaker 2: There's a bunch of really excellent players on bargain deals.
- 28:46Speaker 3: So if these two franchises have the kind of success
- 28:49Speaker 3: that I think they can have, we're going to be
- 28:51Speaker 3: talking about the fact that the ownership group and by
- 28:54Speaker 3: extension the general managers in both franchises and the power
- 28:58Speaker 3: players in the front office of both franchises have done
- 29:00Speaker 3: an excellent job of salary cap management.
- 29:06Speaker 2: I hope that's the story we're telling at least. Bargain hunting.
- 29:09Speaker 5: Yeah, it's a huge part of building championship teams that
- 29:13Speaker 5: just doesn't get talked about probably enough is you have
- 29:17Speaker 5: to balance that salary cap, especially in a hard cap
- 29:22Speaker 5: league like the NHL and in the NBA, not a
- 29:24Speaker 5: hard cap, but you've got those luxury tax aprons that
- 29:28Speaker 5: kind of act as a pseudo hard cap. So It's
- 29:31Speaker 5: a very important thing to do, and so far it
- 29:34Speaker 5: looks like Danny Ainge and company and Austin Ainge and
- 29:36Speaker 5: company for the Utah Jazz are doing that really well,
- 29:39Speaker 5: and Bill Armstrong. and company are doing that really well
- 29:41Speaker 5: for the Mammoth one thought on Keontae George my only
- 29:46Speaker 5: concern about this is long term long term does Keontae
- 29:50Speaker 5: George settle into because I still see a world where
- 29:53Speaker 5: he settles into a six-man role not a starting point
- 29:56Speaker 5: guard role that still remains to be seen And I
- 30:00Speaker 5: know you look at the great production he had last year.
- 30:03Speaker 4: You take out the fact that they were tanking.
- 30:05Speaker 5: He's among some of the best point guards and some
- 30:08Speaker 5: of the best guards in the league from a production standpoint.
- 30:10Speaker 5: But the problem is you can't really take out the
- 30:13Speaker 5: fact that they were tanking. You have to see guys
- 30:16Speaker 5: prove their mettle. They prove their worth when they're trying
- 30:21Speaker 5: to win games, right, when the team's trying to win games.
- 30:23Speaker 4: So I think that remains to be seen.
- 30:25Speaker 5: I hope that he ends up being a starting point guard,
- 30:28Speaker 5: but he may just end up settling into a super
- 30:30Speaker 5: six man role.
- 30:31Speaker 4: That's a lot of money to pay a guy in
- 30:33Speaker 4: that role.
- 30:34Speaker 5: The other side of that coin though, OC is if
- 30:37Speaker 5: the salary cap keeps going up, the fact that they
- 30:41Speaker 5: signed him now to this deal, that's going to be
- 30:44Speaker 5: less and less percentage of the cap. So if he
- 30:46Speaker 5: does end up having a smaller role than he has
- 30:49Speaker 5: right now, like I still could see happening. He's also
- 30:53Speaker 5: going to be paid less percentage of the cap if
- 30:55Speaker 5: the salary cap keeps growing. So I think that it
- 30:57Speaker 5: could work out either way. Right now it does seem
- 31:00Speaker 5: like a great deal.
- 31:00Speaker 3: 877-353-0700, anything you want to talk about today, bring it
- 31:09Speaker 3: to the table. We're going to take a quick one
- 31:10Speaker 3: here at Smith's, and we're going to come back with
- 31:13Speaker 3: the voice of the Utes, Bill Riley, on ESPN 700
- 31:16Speaker 3: and 92.1 FM.
- 31:23Speaker 7: You're tuned to The Sean O'Connell Show from the Murdoch
- 31:26Speaker 7: Chevrolet studio of ESPN 700 and 92.1 FM.
- 31:48Speaker 3: Welcome back to the Sean O'Connell Show.
- 31:50Speaker 2: Coming at you from Smith's in Woods Cross. This is
- 31:52Speaker 2: the Smith's Marketplace.
- 31:54Speaker 3: 614 West, 2600 South in Woods Cross.
- 31:57Speaker 2: We have.
- 31:59Speaker 3: Tailgate passes to give away, Smith's gift cards to give away.
- 32:02Speaker 3: And if you come up and you stock up for
- 32:04Speaker 3: the weekend on some Pepsi products, $ 35 or more in
- 32:08Speaker 3: Pepsi product purchases, show me the receipt. We'll have a
- 32:11Speaker 3: pair of tickets to give away. We actually have two
- 32:13Speaker 3: separate pairs of tickets. We'll only give you one.
- 32:16Speaker 2: With the thirty five dollar purchase but.
- 32:19Speaker 3: That means two people can come in and buy some
- 32:22Speaker 3: pepsi or pepsi products and get themselves some utah state
- 32:26Speaker 3: versus utah tickets our next guest will be calling the
- 32:29Speaker 3: game in the booth at rice echoes stadium bill riley
- 32:33Speaker 3: the voice of the youths joins us.
- 32:34Speaker 2: Bill how are you john i'm great how are you
- 32:38Speaker 2: i'm doing awesome and it's uh.
- 32:39Speaker 3: it's another great weekend another great weekend of football coming
- 32:43Speaker 3: up had a fun Thursday night game for once in
- 32:46Speaker 3: the NFL. Nothing to complain about. I'm trying to figure
- 32:51Speaker 3: out how scared we should be.
- 32:54Speaker 2: Scared is the wrong term.
- 32:55Speaker 3: But how worried we should be about the Utah State
- 32:58Speaker 3: Aggies because they looked awful in week one.
- 33:01Speaker 2: They looked better in week.
- 33:02Speaker 3: Two, ultimately in a losing effort to Washington. And obviously,
- 33:05Speaker 3: you know, there's some like it's the Battle of the
- 33:07Speaker 3: Brothers for a reason. And there's some familiarity between coaching staffs.
- 33:11Speaker 3: And the Utah State guys, a lot of them wish
- 33:13Speaker 3: they were at Utah, so they give it the best
- 33:15Speaker 3: shot every year. So, like, if we want to rate
- 33:18Speaker 3: this thing in terms of difficulty, what is the correct
- 33:20Speaker 3: place to put Utah State as a test for these Utes?
- 33:24Speaker 8: Well, I think it'll be their best test of the
- 33:27Speaker 8: year so far. I don't think Utah State's more talented
- 33:31Speaker 8: than Arkansas.
- 33:32Speaker 2: But I think they're better coached.
- 33:34Speaker 8: I think there's a culture in place, and I think
- 33:36Speaker 8: they'll play hard. I didn't get the sense Arkansas played
- 33:39Speaker 8: very hard last week. So I think this will be,
- 33:43Speaker 8: of the three games we've seen to this point, it
- 33:45Speaker 8: will be an opponent that plays hardest and is probably
- 33:49Speaker 8: best organized. What that means over four quarters I don't
- 33:53Speaker 8: think necessarily is going to bode well for the Aggies.
- 33:57Speaker 8: I think Utah's the better team by a long shot.
- 34:00Speaker 8: but I think that this game will be more competitive
- 34:03Speaker 8: for longer than the first two were. I asked yesterday,
- 34:08Speaker 8: based on a two-game sample size, if people felt like,
- 34:12Speaker 8: and of course it's still a guessing game, but if
- 34:13Speaker 8: people felt like this year's team had shown us that
- 34:16Speaker 8: they are better than last year's squad, kind of equivalent to,
- 34:20Speaker 8: or maybe not quite as good as last year's team,
- 34:22Speaker 8: because you had very similar matchups. You had kind of
- 34:26Speaker 8: a lower end of a major power conference opponent, Last
- 34:30Speaker 8: year it was UCLA.
- 34:31Speaker 3: This year it was Arkansas. The final score was the
- 34:33Speaker 3: exact same in those two games. You had a big
- 34:35Speaker 3: sky opponent, very similar scores and very similar production in
- 34:39Speaker 3: those things. So it's kind of an eyeball test. But
- 34:42Speaker 3: if I ask you to answer that question, do you
- 34:45Speaker 3: come out on they're better than last year, they're not
- 34:48Speaker 3: quite as good as last year, or they're probably a
- 34:51Speaker 3: rough equivalent?
- 34:53Speaker 8: It's funny you say that because I was sitting here
- 34:55Speaker 8: having breakfast with my Uncle Patrick this morning, and he
- 34:58Speaker 8: asked me the exact same question. He's like, is this
- 35:01Speaker 8: team better than last year's team? And I said, I
- 35:04Speaker 8: don't know. It seems pretty similar right now. I feel
- 35:09Speaker 8: like their offensive ceiling is much higher for some reason
- 35:13Speaker 8: this year, Sean.
- 35:14Speaker 6: I think second year of.
- 35:16Speaker 8: Dampier, more offensive weapons, maybe a little bit more creativity
- 35:21Speaker 8: in the play calling. I feel like the offensive ceiling
- 35:24Speaker 8: is higher, but I don't think they've hit that ceiling yet.
- 35:27Speaker 8: And remember last year they were really good against UCLA
- 35:29Speaker 8: in the opener and really pretty good in the second
- 35:32Speaker 8: game too.
- 35:33Speaker 4: So defensively, I.
- 35:33Speaker 8: Still think they're kind of figuring some things out, but
- 35:36Speaker 8: I think it's about the same. So I don't know
- 35:39Speaker 8: that they're better or worse yet than last year, but
- 35:42Speaker 8: I feel like at least on one side of the ball,
- 35:44Speaker 8: especially on the offensive side of the ball, I think
- 35:46Speaker 8: they've got a higher ceiling potentially than they did last year.
- 35:49Speaker 6: Does that make sense?
- 35:51Speaker 2: It makes sense.
- 35:51Speaker 3: And actually, again, it's only a two-game sample size, but
- 35:54Speaker 3: the numbers– kind of tell the same story that maybe
- 35:58Speaker 3: this year could be even more offensively potent. I think
- 36:02Speaker 3: the passing game is definitely going to be better than
- 36:03Speaker 3: it was last year.
- 36:05Speaker 2: We'll find out. And I think this.
- 36:06Speaker 3: Weekend is important to find out how good the run
- 36:08Speaker 3: game will end up being because if the Aggies are
- 36:11Speaker 3: good at anything right now, what they're good at is
- 36:13Speaker 3: stopping the run.
- 36:14Speaker 2: They're giving up three.
- 36:15Speaker 3: Four yards a carry to teams like Washington and, of course,
- 36:19Speaker 3: Idaho State. And I was ranting in the first segment
- 36:22Speaker 3: about how I would like to see Utah, if you
- 36:24Speaker 3: can get a couple of scores on the board, just
- 36:28Speaker 3: go out there and establish the run. Prove that point.
- 36:31Speaker 3: Do what you've got to do to push around the Aggies.
- 36:34Speaker 3: I know that I don't think about games the same
- 36:37Speaker 3: way that Kevin McGibbon and Morgan Scali do, but is
- 36:40Speaker 3: this a game where you can kind of silence some
- 36:42Speaker 3: doubt or answer some questions you might have in your
- 36:44Speaker 3: own building about how potent the run game and the
- 36:47Speaker 3: run blocking is because the Aggies are good in that
- 36:50Speaker 3: part of this game.
- 36:52Speaker 6: Yeah, they are.
- 36:53Speaker 8: They're number one in the new Pac-12 against the run.
- 36:56Speaker 8: They've only given up, I think, about 95 yards a
- 36:59Speaker 8: game right now. Again, I'm not sure what that means.
- 37:02Speaker 8: I know they did pretty well last week against a
- 37:03Speaker 8: good Washington team and bottled up DeMond Williams pretty good. But, yeah,
- 37:07Speaker 8: if you want to test your run game through three games,
- 37:09Speaker 8: this is probably the team to do it against. And
- 37:12Speaker 8: you know Bronco Mendenhall teams are always going to be well-organized.
- 37:15Speaker 8: You know they're going to play hard, run to the ball.
- 37:18Speaker 8: And so far through two games, they've done well against
- 37:21Speaker 8: the run. So if you want to test that offensive
- 37:23Speaker 8: line after three games, which should be close to having
- 37:26Speaker 8: their five guys together, you want to see what Wayshon
- 37:30Speaker 8: Parker can do and Daniel Bray can do and Steven
- 37:33Speaker 8: Chavez-Soto and Bird Ficklin and Devin Dampier on the ground,
- 37:36Speaker 8: this might be a pretty good test. But again, here's
- 37:39Speaker 8: what I'll say. when I've talked to Kevin McGivitt a
- 37:42Speaker 8: bunch this year, and even Morgan Scali, too, they've not
- 37:45Speaker 8: been committal to, we're going to run it 55% of
- 37:48Speaker 8: the time and pass it here. They're going to be like,
- 37:50Speaker 8: we're going to do what.
- 37:51Speaker 2: The defense gives us.
- 37:52Speaker 8: And if the defense is soft against the pass, and
- 37:55Speaker 8: we feel like we can air it out, we're going
- 37:57Speaker 8: to air it out. And maybe we see them really
- 38:00Speaker 8: run it in the second half if they get a
- 38:01Speaker 8: good lead. But your point is good if you really
- 38:04Speaker 8: want to test your– your run game out against what's
- 38:07Speaker 8: probably the best run defense you've seen so far, tomorrow
- 38:10Speaker 8: will be the chance to do it.
- 38:11Speaker 3: Did we learn anything about Utah against Arkansas that we
- 38:15Speaker 3: didn't already think or know based on what we saw
- 38:18Speaker 3: from Idaho?
- 38:20Speaker 2: I don't think so.
- 38:21Speaker 8: I think what we did see, though, is both the
- 38:23Speaker 8: offensive and defensive fronts took another step. Hard to measure
- 38:26Speaker 8: yourself against a 1AA team that's middle of the pack
- 38:29Speaker 8: in their conference. But Arkansas was big up front, offensively
- 38:33Speaker 8: and defensively. And I thought Utah did a good job
- 38:36Speaker 8: both running the football when they had to, but also
- 38:38Speaker 8: pass protecting too and getting after it. I thought last
- 38:42Speaker 8: week they were better up front, you know, getting after,
- 38:45Speaker 8: you know, K.J.
- 38:46Speaker 4: Jackson in that.
- 38:47Speaker 8: Arkansas offense than they were the week before. So I
- 38:50Speaker 8: don't know that we learned anything more, but I do
- 38:52Speaker 8: think we saw both the offensive and defensive line take
- 38:54Speaker 8: another step.
- 38:56Speaker 3: I've asked Kevin McGiven and Devin Dampier how deep in
- 39:00Speaker 3: the bag this offense is going so far because we're
- 39:03Speaker 3: seeing some really insane creativity, stuff that other programs would
- 39:09Speaker 3: run as maybe like a once-in-a-season gadget play. We've seen
- 39:13Speaker 3: like four or five of those already in two games against,
- 39:16Speaker 3: let's face it, opponents that you don't necessarily– need to
- 39:19Speaker 3: empty the clip against. And in both cases, both Coach
- 39:23Speaker 3: McGiven and Devin Dampier.
- 39:25Speaker 2: Kind of laughed and said, oh, we're not even deep
- 39:28Speaker 2: in the bag yet.
- 39:29Speaker 3: I mean, they're 200-plus plays into a playbook, and we've
- 39:34Speaker 3: only run 60 of them so far. So I don't
- 39:38Speaker 3: know if we can expect it to get even more unorthodox,
- 39:41Speaker 3: even more insane, even more creative. But it seems like
- 39:46Speaker 3: there's a possibility that the mad science can continue.
- 39:51Speaker 8: Yeah, McGiven just seems to always have a smile on
- 39:53Speaker 8: his face these days. And I think that he knows
- 39:57Speaker 8: that he's got a lot of great weapons at his
- 40:00Speaker 8: disposal and he can get creative with formations. And when
- 40:04Speaker 8: you've got two quarterbacks that have the ability to do
- 40:06Speaker 8: what Ficklin and Dampier do and to be able to
- 40:09Speaker 8: line them up together and use them both as weapons
- 40:12Speaker 8: in both the pass game and the run game, that
- 40:15Speaker 8: gives you a lot of options. And the other thing is, too,
- 40:17Speaker 8: they're not reliant on one particular guy, one particular player
- 40:22Speaker 8: to really lean on it. They're not reliant on Ray
- 40:25Speaker 8: Sean Parker to have 25 carries a game. They can
- 40:28Speaker 8: spread those around. What's always interesting to me is, at
- 40:30Speaker 8: least through two games, who's the guy today? Like week one, Brayden.
- 40:34Speaker 6: Pagan had a huge game.
- 40:36Speaker 4: He had the catches.
- 40:37Speaker 8: They ran the ball. And last week, he didn't have
- 40:40Speaker 8: a lot. Maybe it's Hunter Andrews. Maybe it's Daniel Bray.
- 40:44Speaker 8: Maybe we see a breakout game from Kyrie Scholes or
- 40:47Speaker 8: Ricky Johnson. I just think there's a lot of different
- 40:50Speaker 8: ways that McGiven can go. We know that it's going
- 40:53Speaker 8: to be Dampier and probably Ficklin and Parker in that
- 40:56Speaker 8: run game, but in the pass game and in the
- 40:59Speaker 8: gadget game, he's got a lot of different ways he
- 41:00Speaker 8: can go.
- 41:03Speaker 2: I'm glad you mentioned Way, Sean.
- 41:05Speaker 3: We had a really productive game again last week, but
- 41:08Speaker 3: it was on 15 touches, and Ten of those came
- 41:12Speaker 3: in the run game. Are we going to get to
- 41:14Speaker 3: a point where he's treated like a bell cow back
- 41:17Speaker 3: when it comes to, you know, we're going to hand
- 41:19Speaker 3: the ball to you or we're going to pitch the
- 41:21Speaker 3: ball to you a couple dozen times a game? Do
- 41:25Speaker 3: you think that what we're seeing from Weishan is kind
- 41:27Speaker 3: of the workload and the game plan that we should
- 41:30Speaker 3: expect almost all year from Weishan?
- 41:34Speaker 8: I think Weishan's number is probably going to be somewhere
- 41:36Speaker 8: in the neighborhood of 17 to 20 touches a game.
- 41:40Speaker 8: Maybe that's going to be 15 rushes and five catches,
- 41:44Speaker 8: or maybe it's going to be 17 rushes and three catches,
- 41:48Speaker 8: or maybe it's going to be six catches. But I
- 41:50Speaker 8: think somewhere, I just, again, go back to it so often, John.
- 41:53Speaker 8: He is running back, one, there's no doubt about it.
- 41:55Speaker 8: But because there's so many other guys that they're going
- 41:59Speaker 8: to have the ability to get the ball to, I
- 42:01Speaker 8: don't know that we're going to see consistently 25 touches.
- 42:05Speaker 8: Maybe there's a game where we have that. But I
- 42:08Speaker 8: think that number for him, and he'll be the leading guy.
- 42:11Speaker 8: Nobody else will get more touches, I don't think, than
- 42:13Speaker 8: him per game. But I think probably in that 17
- 42:16Speaker 8: to 20 touch per game range for him, if that
- 42:19Speaker 8: makes sense.
- 42:21Speaker 3: Yeah, I wonder if they're ever going to get to
- 42:24Speaker 3: a point where they feel like they need more out
- 42:26Speaker 3: of him.
- 42:27Speaker 2: We're not there yet.
- 42:28Speaker 3: And it's great if you can keep a workload a
- 42:31Speaker 3: little bit lighter for someone who's that important. I will
- 42:34Speaker 3: ask you a similar question about, Touch distribution, opportunity distribution
- 42:39Speaker 3: between Devin Dampier and Bird Ficklin. Assuming full health as
- 42:43Speaker 3: we do, I'll knock on wood when I say it,
- 42:45Speaker 3: for both guys is this mix of like they're on
- 42:49Speaker 3: the field together, ten snaps a game, and one of
- 42:52Speaker 3: them is off on the sideline and the other is on.
- 42:56Speaker 2: Maybe Bird is there by himself, five snaps a game.
- 43:00Speaker 3: More or less of Bird, I guess, do you anticipate
- 43:02Speaker 3: as the season rolls on?
- 43:05Speaker 8: I think we're going to kind of see what we've seen.
- 43:08Speaker 8: I just think he's too good a weapon, Sean, not
- 43:10Speaker 8: to utilize him. And he wants to play football, too.
- 43:15Speaker 8: He doesn't want to stand on the sideline and wait
- 43:18Speaker 8: for something to happen. Anyway, I think you're going to
- 43:24Speaker 8: see him utilized. Now, he's going to be a decoy sometimes, too.
- 43:27Speaker 8: He's going to be a guy that you have to
- 43:29Speaker 8: account for because he's so good. But I think you're
- 43:32Speaker 8: going to see him out there on the field sometimes
- 43:34Speaker 8: in that same range where he's been out there most
- 43:37Speaker 8: of the year. And if he's effective with it, maybe
- 43:40Speaker 8: he's out there a little bit more. I think this
- 43:42Speaker 8: team right now is about winning football games. I think
- 43:44Speaker 8: having Bird Ficklin on the field, in whatever role that
- 43:47Speaker 8: might happen to be, helps them win football games.
- 43:53Speaker 3: Bill Riley for another minute or two here on the
- 43:55Speaker 3: Sean O'Connell Show. Our weekly conversation with Bill is brought
- 43:57Speaker 3: to you by Handy and Handy, HandyLawUtah.com, Personal Injury Attorneys.
- 44:03Speaker 2: Big firm experience, small firm attention.
- 44:06Speaker 3: Should we feel any type of concern at all that
- 44:09Speaker 3: the defensive ends are not putting up sack numbers yet?
- 44:15Speaker 8: No, I don't think so yet because they did a
- 44:18Speaker 8: good job last week getting pressures, batting down passes.
- 44:21Speaker 2: K.J.
- 44:22Speaker 8: Jackson was doing a lot of three-step out of the
- 44:24Speaker 8: shotgun last week. But at some point in time, you
- 44:27Speaker 8: want to see Cash Dillon and Ethan Day and Lance
- 44:30Speaker 8: Holtzclaw and Paul Fitzgerald get home. I mean, your sacks
- 44:34Speaker 8: right now, your defensive tackles in Carson Kapusi and Jai
- 44:38Speaker 8: Mo have more sacks than your defensive ends do right now.
- 44:42Speaker 6: So I think that's.
- 44:43Speaker 8: Probably not sustainable over the course of a season. So
- 44:46Speaker 8: you'd probably like to see those guys get on board.
- 44:47Speaker 8: But when I've talked to Scali a little bit about it,
- 44:49Speaker 8: he's felt good about the pressures they've been able to
- 44:51Speaker 8: get the defensive end.
- 44:53Speaker 6: But I think maybe this.
- 44:54Speaker 8: Would be a week you'd like to see one of
- 44:55Speaker 8: those guys get home and get a quarterback down to
- 44:59Speaker 8: the ground.
- 45:01Speaker 3: I don't know how many almost interceptions you called in
- 45:04Speaker 3: the game last week. I think I counted three that
- 45:07Speaker 3: should have been caught by you. Obviously, Jackson Benny got
- 45:11Speaker 3: the one. There's probably not even a real question here
- 45:15Speaker 3: because you just have to make that play when it's
- 45:17Speaker 3: available to you. Benny has kind of established himself as
- 45:20Speaker 3: a guy that is more than likely going to come
- 45:23Speaker 3: up with those balls, although he.
- 45:24Speaker 2: Dropped one last year.
- 45:26Speaker 3: Who else, Bill, can you see becoming that guy that
- 45:29Speaker 3: is the sort of havoc player, is the Gianni Paul,
- 45:32Speaker 3: the Chase Hanson, the home run hitter?
- 45:36Speaker 8: Well, Havoc player, I think John O'Hall has a really
- 45:39Speaker 8: good chance.
- 45:40Speaker 4: To be that guy.
- 45:41Speaker 8: He's just so athletic and he's so around it all
- 45:44Speaker 8: the time. Benny, obviously, as you mentioned, could be that guy.
- 45:47Speaker 8: And another guy for me, and I think I told
- 45:48Speaker 8: you we were talking about breakout players this year, I
- 45:50Speaker 8: think Rabbit Evans. has a great chance to be that
- 45:54Speaker 8: Havoc-type guy too because he's really good at coming downhill
- 45:58Speaker 8: and making plays. I thought Nate Ritchie may have had
- 46:01Speaker 8: his best game as a Ute last weekend. I think
- 46:03Speaker 8: you can take your pick of anybody in that safety
- 46:07Speaker 8: room of being those guys. I'm still kind of waiting
- 46:10Speaker 8: to see. which of the defensive ends he emerges, because
- 46:14Speaker 8: you'd like to have one of those guys be a
- 46:16Speaker 8: havoc guy for you. You'd like to have one guy
- 46:18Speaker 8: on each level, right? You'd like to have a defensive
- 46:20Speaker 8: end and or tackle. You'd like to have one of
- 46:23Speaker 8: your backers and one of your safeties or corners. Well,
- 46:26Speaker 8: we know the safety room, any one of those guys
- 46:28Speaker 8: could be that guy. Maybe it's John O'Hall, maybe it's
- 46:33Speaker 8: Trey Reynolds, but I want to see which one of
- 46:35Speaker 8: those DNs Or maybe it's Carson Kapusi plays the role
- 46:39Speaker 8: that Starlo Tulele used to play, being a havoc player
- 46:43Speaker 8: from the middle of that defense. But for me right now,
- 46:46Speaker 8: I think Paul and Evans are two guys, along with Benny,
- 46:49Speaker 8: who could emerge in that position.
- 46:53Speaker 2: You like what you saw from your Chiefs the other night?
- 46:57Speaker 6: Not a bad effort, Sean.
- 46:58Speaker 8: I like the idea of running the football and taking
- 47:01Speaker 8: a little load off of Patrick Mahomes while he's working
- 47:04Speaker 8: his way back off that ACL. What I really like, though,
- 47:08Speaker 8: that young defense. You know, they traded away McDuffie. They
- 47:11Speaker 8: let Watson walk. They had another good draft. It looks
- 47:15Speaker 8: like Peter Woods, the tackle, R. Mason Thomas, the end,
- 47:19Speaker 8: Mansour Delane, who made an interception on the third play
- 47:22Speaker 8: of the game.
- 47:23Speaker 4: Thank you, Bo Nix.
- 47:25Speaker 8: I'm impressed. I think they've got a chance to be
- 47:29Speaker 8: in a pretty wide open AFC. I think they've got
- 47:31Speaker 8: a chance to maybe get back there as Kenneth Walker
- 47:34Speaker 8: runs it a little bit and Mahomes knocks off the rust.
- 47:39Speaker 3: What do our listeners need to know about Handy and
- 47:41Speaker 3: Handy from Bill Reilly?
- 47:44Speaker 9: Well, they're good guys.
- 47:45Speaker 8: They're just good people who are good attorneys as well
- 47:48Speaker 8: who will take really good care of you. If you
- 47:51Speaker 8: or somebody you know or love has been in an
- 47:53Speaker 8: accident or been in a workplace incident, let Preston and
- 47:56Speaker 8: Garrett Handy take good care of you at HandyLawUtah.com and
- 48:00Speaker 8: let them, more than anything else, take care of you
- 48:03Speaker 8: and your family because they know how to work the
- 48:05Speaker 8: system with insurance companies and all that stuff because that's
- 48:08Speaker 8: not something you're probably keenly aware of. Let the experts
- 48:11Speaker 8: do it, and that's what Handy and Handy can do.
- 48:14Speaker 3: HandylawUtah.com. Preston and Garrett and company treat us very well.
- 48:18Speaker 3: They'll take care of you also. And they bring our
- 48:21Speaker 3: conversation with Bill Riley every single week to the airwaves.
- 48:26Speaker 3: So we appreciate them for that. See you up there tomorrow, Bill.
- 48:29Speaker 3: Appreciate you giving us time today.
- 48:31Speaker 9: Come by and say hi, Sean.
- 48:32Speaker 6: See you then.
- 48:33Speaker 3: Bill Riley, voice of the Utes, here on the home
- 48:37Speaker 3: of the Utes, ESPN 700 and 92.1 FM.
- 48:40Speaker 2: Pre-game starts early tomorrow here. We've got, of course... the
- 48:45Speaker 2: full game itself and uh.
- 48:47Speaker 3: when you're driving home you'll catch the post game as
- 48:50Speaker 3: well on ESPN 700. We are at 614 West 2600
- 48:55Speaker 3: South in Woods Cross today. I do have two pairs
- 48:58Speaker 3: of game tickets to give away. All you gotta do
- 49:00Speaker 3: is you gotta come and stock up on the Pepsi products.
- 49:03Speaker 3: You want some Rockstar Energy, some Dr. Pepper, some Gatorade.
- 49:07Speaker 3: Make some purchases. Thirty-five dollars worth of Pepsi purchases here
- 49:11Speaker 3: at Smith.
- 49:12Speaker 2: Show us the receipt.
- 49:12Speaker 3: We'll give you a pair of tickets to Utah versus
- 49:16Speaker 3: Utah State tomorrow at Rice-Eccles Stadium. passes to the Smith's
- 49:21Speaker 3: tailgate tent. We have Smith's gift cards. We have Gatorade
- 49:25Speaker 3: water bottles. We have Starbucks blankets. We have Taffy Town
- 49:28Speaker 3: Taffy in our ESPN 700 bags.
- 49:31Speaker 2: Come see us. It's the Sean O'Connell Show on ESPN
- 49:35Speaker 2: 700 and 92.1 FM.
- 49:44Speaker 7: You're listening to the Sean O'Connell Show from the Murdoch
- 49:47Speaker 7: Hyundai Studio of ESPN 792.1 FM.
- 49:50Speaker 10: Welcome back to the Sean O'Connell Show.
- 50:05Speaker 3: Coming at you live from Smith's in Woods Cross. The
- 50:08Speaker 3: Smith's Marketplace up here at 614 West, 2600 South. We
- 50:13Speaker 3: have tailgate passes and Smith's gift cards to give away.
- 50:15Speaker 3: We've got Gatorade water bottles, Starbucks blankets, and a pair
- 50:18Speaker 3: of game tickets.
- 50:20Speaker 2: Well, two pairs of game tickets are available.
- 50:23Speaker 3: If you can just show us that you made some
- 50:24Speaker 3: Pepsi purchases stocked up for the weekend, potentially, I will
- 50:29Speaker 3: happily hook you up with some tickets for Utah State
- 50:34Speaker 3: versus Utah at Rice-Eccles Stadium tomorrow. Another interesting weekend of
- 50:40Speaker 3: college football coming up. We've got Houston, Texas Tech tonight.
- 50:45Speaker 2: This one, I'm.
- 50:45Speaker 3: Going to be watching this one closely. We've got a
- 50:48Speaker 3: couple minutes here at the end of the hour. We've
- 50:51Speaker 3: got like one minute here at the end of the
- 50:53Speaker 3: hour to talk about it.
- 50:54Speaker 2: Both of these teams, they have.
- 50:55Speaker 3: A common opponent in Oregon State. Oregon State might be
- 50:58Speaker 3: the best 0-2 team in the country right now. Or
- 51:03Speaker 3: maybe they're not good, and yet Oregon State was able
- 51:06Speaker 3: to push Houston and Texas Tech both, I won't say
- 51:09Speaker 3: all the way to the limit, but make it a
- 51:10Speaker 3: good game for both of these guys. We've got a really,
- 51:17Speaker 3: really fascinating game tonight between Houston and Texas Tech that
- 51:23Speaker 3: I think is going to help establish the pecking order
- 51:26Speaker 3: in the Big 12 Conference. Our injury reports are brought
- 51:30Speaker 3: to you by the Advocates Injury Attorneys. If you've been
- 51:33Speaker 3: in an accident, any kind of accident, auto accident, slip
- 51:36Speaker 3: and fall accident, scooter accident, biking accident, 801-355-5550 or utahadvocates.com.
- 51:44Speaker 2: You did not deserve to be in an accident. You
- 51:46Speaker 2: do deserve an advocate.
- 51:48Speaker 3: There's no injury report for the Utah game, no injury
- 51:51Speaker 3: report for the BYU game, but there are injury reports,
- 51:54Speaker 3: mandatory ones, for Texas Tech and Houston because that is
- 51:58Speaker 3: a Big 12 contest.
- 52:00Speaker 2: I talked about this on the show yesterday.
- 52:04Speaker 3: The questionable status for Texas Tech of Trey White, who's
- 52:07Speaker 3: one of the big transfers they got to try and
- 52:10Speaker 3: replace some of that defensive production they lost to the
- 52:13Speaker 3: NFL and to graduation last year. Trey White is questionable
- 52:17Speaker 3: in this game, and that is a big loss if
- 52:19Speaker 3: they can't get him healthy and ready to go. It's
- 52:22Speaker 3: not a Big 12 injury report, but also the SEC
- 52:28Speaker 3: injury report that had Sam Levitt, starting quarterback for LSU,
- 52:33Speaker 3: listed as doubtful for a day. and he's been upgraded
- 52:37Speaker 3: to questionable, and he will be upgraded again to probable.
- 52:40Speaker 3: I love that everything Lane Kiffin does generates controversy and
- 52:45Speaker 3: stirs up some things because there are people out there,
- 52:50Speaker 3: there's a certain corner of the internet that is heavily
- 52:53Speaker 3: in the betting world that thinks that Lane Kiffin might
- 52:57Speaker 3: have listed him as doubtful for a day, for a practice,
- 53:03Speaker 3: where he was limited in practice. He was like a
- 53:06Speaker 3: non-contact jersey, not going to participate fully in practice, where
- 53:12Speaker 3: he was listed as doubtful, so that this is the conspiracy,
- 53:16Speaker 3: so that LSU bettors could hammer a number that dropped
- 53:22Speaker 3: down to like minus one or two and a half
- 53:25Speaker 3: instead of being three or three plus.
- 53:27Speaker 2: So I don't know if it makes sense.
- 53:31Speaker 3: For Lane Kiffin to risk something like that given the
- 53:35Speaker 3: contract value and the nature of his position as the
- 53:38Speaker 3: head coach at LSU football. But the conspiracy out there
- 53:42Speaker 3: is that maybe he put that on the Internet so
- 53:45Speaker 3: that LSU bettors could get a better number, a superior number.
- 53:51Speaker 3: The bettors could get a better number and find a
- 53:55Speaker 3: little way to maximize their gains if LSU ends up
- 53:59Speaker 3: winning a close game.
- 54:01Speaker 5: If he's doing stuff like that, OC, he's got way
- 54:04Speaker 5: bigger problems than the little.
- 54:06Speaker 4: Some of them, I guess, not so minor controversies.
- 54:09Speaker 5: But in comparison, minor controversies that have happened in the
- 54:13Speaker 5: last couple weeks.
- 54:15Speaker 4: He's doing that.
- 54:16Speaker 5: He's got way bigger problems. And that would be quite
- 54:19Speaker 5: the thing to do for Lane Kiffin.
- 54:21Speaker 2: I'm not even.
- 54:22Speaker 5: I'm not sure... I think he's capable of a lot
- 54:24Speaker 5: of things. I'm not sure he's doing something like that.
- 54:26Speaker 3: Well, here's the thing, right, is there's no way to prove,
- 54:29Speaker 3: especially when the quarterback is limited in practice. Like, if
- 54:32Speaker 3: the quarterback is a full go and there's somebody at
- 54:35Speaker 3: practice who knows that or somebody at practice who takes
- 54:38Speaker 3: a video of that or a photo of that or whatever,
- 54:40Speaker 3: and then you put conflicting information on an official injury report,
- 54:46Speaker 3: now we're talking about cooking with gas here. Now there's
- 54:49Speaker 3: a little smoke and potentially fire involved. on an accusation
- 54:52Speaker 3: like that. When you're just talking about, oh, guess what? Look,
- 54:56Speaker 3: this is a guy who was limited in practice. And
- 54:59Speaker 3: I don't think Lane Kiffin was ever doubting that Sam
- 55:03Speaker 3: Levitt would play in this game. I don't think if
- 55:06Speaker 3: we got him under some truth serum in a hot light,
- 55:11Speaker 3: you put him in the interrogation, I don't think he
- 55:12Speaker 3: would say, yeah, I was worried he wouldn't be able
- 55:14Speaker 3: to start this week. I think that he enjoys the gamesmanship.
- 55:17Speaker 3: He enjoys the drama. I don't think he enjoys it
- 55:20Speaker 3: for the sake of helping bettors out one way or another.
- 55:23Speaker 3: But he has shown in interviews in the past that he's,
- 55:26Speaker 3: you know, at least cynically aware of bettors and of
- 55:31Speaker 3: betting patterns, right? Because he has mentioned in the past, like,
- 55:36Speaker 3: you know, when they cover or they don't cover, like, oh, that'll...
- 55:39Speaker 3: That'll make the gamblers happy or something like that.
- 55:41Speaker 6: It's true.
- 55:42Speaker 3: There's nothing wrong with that, by the way, in my opinion. Like,
- 55:45Speaker 3: for these college coaches to pretend they don't know what
- 55:47Speaker 3: the line is on their game or these college coaches
- 55:50Speaker 3: to pretend that they don't know that there's millions and
- 55:53Speaker 3: billions of dollars involved in sports gambling or to say
- 55:56Speaker 3: that they're above it or whatever, that's, like, it's, when
- 55:59Speaker 3: they claim ignorance, that bothers me because it's disingenuous. I
- 56:03Speaker 3: don't mind when Lane Kiffin, like, throws a little mention
- 56:06Speaker 3: out there because he's just being, like, a little bit
- 56:08Speaker 3: more real than a lot of coaches are willing to be.
- 56:10Speaker 4: Yeah, just don't participate is the line.
- 56:13Speaker 3: And I think, like, the participation thing, it's just, from
- 56:17Speaker 3: a risk standpoint, it makes no sense, right?
- 56:20Speaker 2: Lane Kiffin is making.
- 56:22Speaker 3: What, like $ 11 million a year from LSU? He's not
- 56:27Speaker 3: going to jeopardize that in order to keep some, like,
- 56:30Speaker 3: booster who throws a few bets down happy you're just
- 56:33Speaker 3: not going to do that the only way that you
- 56:35Speaker 3: would ever get yourself into that kind of trouble is
- 56:37Speaker 3: in the old days of nefarious betting if he had
- 56:40Speaker 3: a gambling debt of his own and organized crime and
- 56:43Speaker 3: all those people were so heavily involved in it back
- 56:45Speaker 3: then that you kind of like you kind of had
- 56:48Speaker 3: to allow for every possibility when when it came to
- 56:51Speaker 3: manipulation of lines and things like that but uh if
- 56:55Speaker 3: if we have learned anything from the prevalence of legal
- 56:58Speaker 3: sports gambling now is that the watchdog agencies are so
- 57:03Speaker 3: on top of all of these things that anything that
- 57:06Speaker 3: is even close to a regular gets flagged and everything
- 57:09Speaker 3: gets investigated.
- 57:10Speaker 2: I don't gamble myself.
- 57:14Speaker 3: I'm not like an every week kind of guy or
- 57:17Speaker 3: every game kind of guy the way that some people are.
- 57:19Speaker 2: I'm far from being a degenerate.
- 57:20Speaker 3: I don't mind throwing a pick out there or throwing
- 57:23Speaker 3: a couple guesses out of what might happen from a
- 57:25Speaker 3: week to another week.
- 57:27Speaker 2: At the end of the day.
- 57:29Speaker 3: The legalization of gambling, the ubiquitous nature of sports gambling,
- 57:34Speaker 3: while it might not be good for a lot of
- 57:35Speaker 3: people's personal finances and people's personal well-being from a financial
- 57:40Speaker 3: stability standpoint, it does improve regulation of gambling. And the
- 57:48Speaker 3: conspiracy is kind of fun and silly. I don't think
- 57:50Speaker 3: there's a lot of merit to it.
- 57:53Speaker 5: You're right on. The reality is it's gamesmanship. We saw
- 57:58Speaker 5: this with one of the ill-fated seasons. 2023, last season
- 58:04Speaker 5: in the Pac-12, Witt had Cam warm up like he
- 58:11Speaker 5: was going to play against UCLA just to get UCLA rattled,
- 58:15Speaker 5: just to get them going, oh my gosh, Cam's going
- 58:17Speaker 5: to play, and then completely change their game plan which
- 58:22Speaker 5: I'm not sure that exactly happened, but it certainly made
- 58:26Speaker 5: them scramble a little bit and maybe gave the Utes
- 58:28Speaker 5: a little bit of an advantage in that game, helped
- 58:31Speaker 5: them win. This is the same kind of idea with
- 58:34Speaker 5: just using the injury report designation, just giving his former team,
- 58:38Speaker 5: Ole Miss, something to think about. Oh, hey, maybe Sam's
- 58:41Speaker 5: not going to play. What are you going to do?
- 58:43Speaker 5: Are you going to relax? Which, of course, they're not
- 58:45Speaker 5: going to, but you try to get any kind of
- 58:48Speaker 5: advantages that you can.
- 58:50Speaker 4: Including this kind of gamesmanship.
- 58:53Speaker 3: Alright, we're at the end of hour number one here
- 58:55Speaker 3: at Smith's. We have plenty of stuff still left to
- 58:57Speaker 3: give away. I did see one person come in. Looks
- 59:00Speaker 3: like he's going to get his Pepsi products. He's going
- 59:03Speaker 3: to come back. He stopped by. We're over by the
- 59:05Speaker 3: sushi counter. We're in the bistro area of the Smith's Marketplace.
- 59:09Speaker 3: Come in, throw up a Go Utes. We'll give you
- 59:11Speaker 3: a tailgate pass. We'll give you a Smith's gift card.
- 59:14Speaker 3: And if you want to.
- 59:14Speaker 2: Go buy $ 35 or.
- 59:16Speaker 3: More of Pepsi products, we will give you a pair
- 59:18Speaker 3: of tickets to Utah versus Utah State. We had someone
- 59:21Speaker 3: come by and verify that we still have tickets available,
- 59:24Speaker 3: and he's shopping right now. So I think he's probably
- 59:27Speaker 3: going to beat you to at least one pair of tickets,
- 59:29Speaker 3: which means... You've got to get up here as soon
- 59:31Speaker 3: as you can. 14 West, 2600 South, in Woods Cross,
- 59:36Speaker 3: on the Sean O'Connell Show. It's Utah's number one sports talk,
- 59:39Speaker 3: ESPN 700, 92.1 FM. I'm going off the rails.
- 59:44Speaker 6: On a crazy train.
- 59:46Speaker 7: This is the Sean O'Connell Show, your home of the
- 59:49Speaker 7: best inside of your Utes. Let's get back to OC
- 59:52Speaker 7: from the Murdoch Chevrolet studio of ESPN 700 and 92.1 FM.
- 1:00:07Speaker 3: All right, we've got to sneak in a PGA Tour
- 1:00:09Speaker 3: leaderboard update here from the Biltmore Championship, brought to you
- 1:00:12Speaker 3: by Uintah Golf by Worldwide Golf. Visit in-store for free
- 1:00:17Speaker 3: custom fittings at Uintah Golf or shop online at worldwidegolf.com.
- 1:00:22Speaker 2: Get there.
- 1:00:23Speaker 3: James, what does the leaderboard look like from the Biltmore Championship?
- 1:00:28Speaker 5: Neil Shipley is your leader, tied at the top. at
- 1:00:33Speaker 5: nine under you, you knew it. You knew Neil Shipley.
- 1:00:35Speaker 5: You told me before the show.
- 1:00:37Speaker 2: I was saying, this is Shipley's day, man.
- 1:00:39Speaker 4: This is Shipley's day.
- 1:00:41Speaker 5: He's tied at the top with Ricky Castillo, who, you know,
- 1:00:44Speaker 5: I incidentally was like, no, I think it's Ricky.
- 1:00:46Speaker 4: I guess we're both right. Oh, see, um, third is
- 1:00:51Speaker 4: Eric Cole.
- 1:00:52Speaker 5: He is at three under he's tied now, now moved
- 1:00:56Speaker 5: into a tie for third. This is just say updated
- 1:00:59Speaker 5: things with Ben Coles. Um, at three under Seamus power.
- 1:01:07Speaker 5: And let's see, Jacob Bridgman are in a group that
- 1:01:10Speaker 5: kind of round out the top 10 at four under
- 1:01:13Speaker 5: tied for fourth at the Biltmore championship OC. So a
- 1:01:19Speaker 5: fairly significant lead for Shipley and Castillo right now. They,
- 1:01:24Speaker 5: I mean, Shipley, I mean, you nailed it. OC he's
- 1:01:27Speaker 5: 15 under for the tournament. He was, he was nine under, uh, in,
- 1:01:32Speaker 5: in round two alone. So, uh, incredible, incredible day for him.
- 1:01:39Speaker 5: And there's your PGA tour leaderboard update from the Biltmore
- 1:01:42Speaker 5: championship brought to you by you into golf.
- 1:01:45Speaker 3: Tell them OC sent you, or you heard about it
- 1:01:47Speaker 3: on ESPN 700. Anytime you go into one of the,
- 1:01:50Speaker 3: you went to golf locations all up and down the
- 1:01:52Speaker 3: Wasatch front.
- 1:01:54Speaker 2: All right.
- 1:01:55Speaker 3: NFL season is in full swing. We've got a Sunday
- 1:01:57Speaker 3: night football game coming up a Sunday night. The premier
- 1:02:01Speaker 3: matchup is going to be the Kansas City Chiefs and
- 1:02:04Speaker 3: the Indianapolis Colts. 6-20 Mountain Time kickoff on NBC.
- 1:02:09Speaker 5: Only premier teams play on Sunday, just saying. That definitely
- 1:02:12Speaker 5: describes the Colts.
- 1:02:13Speaker 3: I was going to say, am I allowed to call
- 1:02:15Speaker 3: that a premier matchup if the Colts are involved?
- 1:02:18Speaker 5: I mean, I want to say Daniel Jones, another we've
- 1:02:22Speaker 5: been talking about with the likes of John Henry Daly
- 1:02:26Speaker 5: and the college ranks, former Ute, obviously, having a miraculous–
- 1:02:31Speaker 5: Speedy recovery from an Achilles tear. I believe Daniel Jones
- 1:02:35Speaker 5: had an Achilles tear around the same time as John
- 1:02:37Speaker 5: Henry Daly, and he also started week one.
- 1:02:41Speaker 4: It could have been an ACL or something.
- 1:02:43Speaker 5: Either way, it seemed like a really fast recovery for
- 1:02:46Speaker 5: Daniel Jones, just like we've been talking about with JHD
- 1:02:49Speaker 5: in college. And that gave me some, with the way
- 1:02:54Speaker 5: Indiana Jones performed last year healthy, it gave me some like, okay,
- 1:02:57Speaker 5: maybe the Colts will start out as well as they
- 1:03:00Speaker 5: did last year and finish the season better.
- 1:03:02Speaker 4: But I don't know. They got destroyed by the Ravens.
- 1:03:05Speaker 4: So I don't know.
- 1:03:07Speaker 3: Well, there are people who believe that the Ravens are
- 1:03:09Speaker 3: ready for a vintage Ravens year and potentially. So, look,
- 1:03:15Speaker 3: it's really interesting the way that this is done in
- 1:03:17Speaker 3: the NFL because I think people feel, that the knowledge
- 1:03:22Speaker 3: carryover from an NFL season to the next NFL season
- 1:03:25Speaker 3: is a lot more significant than what you have in
- 1:03:28Speaker 3: college football. And because of that, I think that there
- 1:03:30Speaker 3: are a lot of people who are ready to crown
- 1:03:33Speaker 3: or curse a team after week one in the NFL,
- 1:03:37Speaker 3: definitely more so than college football.
- 1:03:38Speaker 2: We allow for so much.
- 1:03:39Speaker 3: Wiggle room when it comes to the college football thing where,
- 1:03:44Speaker 3: I mean, everybody, even the people who love to make
- 1:03:46Speaker 3: blanket statements and love to make concrete statements conclusions we'll
- 1:03:51Speaker 3: be like yeah you know for now they look great
- 1:03:54Speaker 3: or this team is as good as advertised but we'll
- 1:03:59Speaker 3: see what happens in week four in the nfl like
- 1:04:03Speaker 3: i think because we have a better sense of what
- 1:04:06Speaker 3: we should expect based on contracts instead of random transfer
- 1:04:11Speaker 3: portal stuff We know more about the coaches and their
- 1:04:14Speaker 3: level of success in the NFL because those guys seem
- 1:04:16Speaker 3: to stick around slightly longer.
- 1:04:18Speaker 2: For whatever reason, a.
- 1:04:21Speaker 3: Lot of folks are ready to say, oh, Denver Broncos
- 1:04:23Speaker 3: are screwed, they're done, because of a one-week performance against
- 1:04:27Speaker 3: Kansas City Chiefs. It was pointed out on the Dan
- 1:04:31Speaker 3: Patrick show this morning that I think it was the
- 1:04:34Speaker 3: Houston Texans, who are a lot of people's kind of
- 1:04:35Speaker 3: darling pick, I think the Houston Texans started 0-3 last year.
- 1:04:40Speaker 3: And they ended up having a respectable season. And more importantly,
- 1:04:45Speaker 3: for the sake of the 2026-2027 year, they started 0-3
- 1:04:49Speaker 3: last year. They might start 0-2 this year, and nobody's
- 1:04:51Speaker 3: sticking a fork in that squad. So I wouldn't do
- 1:04:55Speaker 3: it yet for the Indianapolis Colts. I wouldn't do it
- 1:04:58Speaker 3: for anyone on the positive end of the ledger either.
- 1:05:01Speaker 3: I'm really happy with the San Francisco 49ers' first game
- 1:05:04Speaker 3: of the season in Australia against the L.A.
- 1:05:07Speaker 2: Rams. I mean.
- 1:05:09Speaker 3: If you take that one-game sample size, you say that
- 1:05:12Speaker 3: is a Super Bowl favorite right there.
- 1:05:13Speaker 2: That is a team that is capable of winning it all.
- 1:05:16Speaker 2: And that is.
- 1:05:16Speaker 3: True if you assume that there will be no issue
- 1:05:21Speaker 3: with health all year long for the San Francisco 49ers.
- 1:05:25Speaker 3: That is going to be the crux of everything for
- 1:05:29Speaker 3: the Niners this year. Can you keep that all-star, all-pro,
- 1:05:32Speaker 3: Pro Bowl roster, can you keep them healthy? Because most
- 1:05:35Speaker 3: of them have a lot of miles on the tires.
- 1:05:38Speaker 3: There's aging in some of your more important positions. And
- 1:05:42Speaker 3: I am not ready to say anything concrete or make
- 1:05:46Speaker 3: any blanket statements about the Niners as of yet because
- 1:05:49Speaker 3: it's going to take a little bit of time before
- 1:05:52Speaker 3: we really know. And even then, right, like because the
- 1:05:57Speaker 3: injury bug is the thing that you fear, even if
- 1:06:00Speaker 3: you've established yourself by week 12 as the best team
- 1:06:03Speaker 3: in the league or one of the best teams in
- 1:06:04Speaker 3: the league, the injury bug can take that away from you.
- 1:06:09Speaker 3: You can earn it over the course of a half season,
- 1:06:11Speaker 3: and you can lose it over a one-week span.
- 1:06:14Speaker 5: Can we not talk about last year's Colts? You're bringing up,
- 1:06:18Speaker 5: you say that, and that's exactly what happened to the Colts.
- 1:06:21Speaker 5: They start out, what was it, 8-0, 8-2, whatever it was,
- 1:06:24Speaker 5: and then they lose the rest of their games and
- 1:06:27Speaker 5: miss the playoffs because of the injury. So you're exactly
- 1:06:31Speaker 5: spot on with that. We really don't know until, like,
- 1:06:35Speaker 5: week 10. whether or not a team that started out
- 1:06:38Speaker 5: hot or started out badly is going to be the
- 1:06:42Speaker 5: team that they started out as, or they're going to
- 1:06:44Speaker 5: be a team that, um, is in the playoff race, right. Or,
- 1:06:48Speaker 5: or miss the playoffs altogether, whatever the case may be.
- 1:06:51Speaker 5: It overreaction Monday is a thing that they try to
- 1:06:55Speaker 5: do on all the national shows. And it's kind of
- 1:06:57Speaker 5: fun to fall into that, but really the best thing
- 1:07:02Speaker 5: to do is take each thing week by week. And, uh,
- 1:07:06Speaker 5: not overreact too much to september i mean bill belichick
- 1:07:10Speaker 5: and the patriots proved this over and over again you
- 1:07:13Speaker 5: can't overreact too much in september because the team can
- 1:07:16Speaker 5: go oh and two or one and three and then
- 1:07:19Speaker 5: win the super bowl right.
- 1:07:21Speaker 3: Yes and and look the kansas city chiefs against the
- 1:07:24Speaker 3: denver broncos it was like oh the chiefs are still
- 1:07:26Speaker 3: the chiefs here we go that was uh an okay
- 1:07:30Speaker 3: performance from patrick mahomes by his standard right One of
- 1:07:35Speaker 3: the biggest off-season acquisitions, off-season moves in all of NFL
- 1:07:39Speaker 3: football was Kenneth Walker going from the defending Super Bowl
- 1:07:42Speaker 3: champs to the Kansas City Chiefs. Kenneth Walker is not
- 1:07:46Speaker 3: going to run for seven and a half yards a
- 1:07:48Speaker 3: carry every game. His debut with the Chiefs was absolutely phenomenal.
- 1:07:53Speaker 3: I love Kenneth Walker. I think he's a great back.
- 1:07:55Speaker 3: I don't think Kenneth Walker is going to give you
- 1:07:57Speaker 3: 175 yards per game. If that's true, then crown the
- 1:08:03Speaker 3: Kansas City Chiefs right now. Travis Kelsey looked like vintage
- 1:08:06Speaker 3: Travis Kelsey. Three catches for 71 yards. He had a 60-yarder.
- 1:08:11Speaker 3: He was loose out there.
- 1:08:12Speaker 5: That 60-yarder was absolutely turn-back-the-clock Travis Kelsey.
- 1:08:18Speaker 3: Travis Kelsey is not going to be doing that more
- 1:08:20Speaker 3: than half a dozen times this year, if we're being
- 1:08:23Speaker 3: honest with ourselves, right? So getting too far out over
- 1:08:27Speaker 3: our skis in any case with any team, In week one,
- 1:08:31Speaker 3: week two, whatever.
- 1:08:32Speaker 2: I want to do it.
- 1:08:33Speaker 3: Trust me, I want to do it with the San
- 1:08:34Speaker 3: Francisco 49ers. But you have to be careful about it.
- 1:08:38Speaker 3: So when we're talking about a Sunday night football matchup
- 1:08:41Speaker 3: with the Kansas City Chiefs and the Indianapolis Colts, what
- 1:08:44Speaker 3: you saw from them in week one will probably be.
- 1:08:46Speaker 2: Analogous to what you see in week two. Maybe.
- 1:08:50Speaker 3: It could be you could have a Utah State situation here.
- 1:08:54Speaker 2: Right?
- 1:08:55Speaker 3: Like I think we're going to get some of that
- 1:08:56Speaker 3: from the Denver Broncos. They had an abysmal performance. against
- 1:09:01Speaker 3: the Kansas City Chiefs. I think the Broncos are a
- 1:09:03Speaker 3: really good team this year. I think the Broncos are
- 1:09:05Speaker 3: going to get more out of basically everybody on their
- 1:09:07Speaker 3: roster in week two than they got in week one.
- 1:09:12Speaker 3: I think the Rams are going to get more out
- 1:09:15Speaker 3: of every person on their roster in week two, three, four,
- 1:09:18Speaker 3: ten than they got in week one. I am not
- 1:09:23Speaker 3: making any conclusions off of week one, even in the NFL,
- 1:09:26Speaker 3: even when it's guys, professionals that we know should have
- 1:09:30Speaker 3: it all dialed in. Because football is still football, and
- 1:09:33Speaker 3: the variability is a lot greater in the college ranks,
- 1:09:36Speaker 3: but it still exists at the NFL level. I don't
- 1:09:40Speaker 3: know why I'm trying to make an Indianapolis Colts fan
- 1:09:42Speaker 3: or anyone else feel better about the situation.
- 1:09:44Speaker 2: I don't care about the Colts.
- 1:09:46Speaker 3: It's maybe more that I'm looking at the Kansas City
- 1:09:49Speaker 3: Chiefs and I'm like, okay.
- 1:09:51Speaker 4: You're skeptical still, it sounds like.
- 1:09:53Speaker 3: Yeah, I'm looking at it and I'm going like, look,
- 1:09:56Speaker 3: the Kansas City Chiefs are going to be there at
- 1:09:58Speaker 3: the end, but I don't think the Chiefs are going
- 1:10:02Speaker 3: to look. When the Chiefs play the Broncos, when is
- 1:10:05Speaker 3: the next time the Chiefs play the Broncos?
- 1:10:07Speaker 2: Let me look up the schedule here.
- 1:10:08Speaker 3: When the Chiefs play the Broncos in November, November 1st,
- 1:10:15Speaker 3: I'd be willing to bet money now that the outcome
- 1:10:19Speaker 3: looks a lot different. I don't know if the Broncos
- 1:10:21Speaker 3: are going to win, but I'd be willing to put
- 1:10:24Speaker 3: money down right now that it's not a demolition at
- 1:10:28Speaker 3: the hands of the Chiefs the next time around.
- 1:10:31Speaker 5: Yeah, you've got to think it's going to be much closer.
- 1:10:33Speaker 5: That game's in Denver. Denver might just... Maybe that's a
- 1:10:36Speaker 5: blowout win for Denver, too, by the way. Like, that's...
- 1:10:39Speaker 5: I think that's week eight. The NFL season, like, a
- 1:10:43Speaker 5: lot of things... A lot of time's going to pass
- 1:10:45Speaker 5: between now and then.
- 1:10:46Speaker 2: Yeah, that's week... That's week seven.
- 1:10:48Speaker 4: Week seven.
- 1:10:49Speaker 3: Okay, in, like, a lifetime in football, right? And I
- 1:10:54Speaker 3: love the fact... This is why we tune into the games.
- 1:10:57Speaker 3: This is why the NFL is king.
- 1:10:59Speaker 2: This is why.
- 1:11:00Speaker 3: It is our American pastime now, why football has become
- 1:11:04Speaker 3: a thing that dominates every other sport from a viewership
- 1:11:07Speaker 3: standpoint because the glory, the happiness is matched by the heartbreak.
- 1:11:13Speaker 3: When the Kansas City Chiefs invariably regress to the mean
- 1:11:17Speaker 3: of having a 37-year-old pop star husband tight end who
- 1:11:22Speaker 3: has passed his prime and can't give you a huge
- 1:11:26Speaker 3: play or two huge plays every game, Then we're going
- 1:11:29Speaker 3: to look at it and we're going to say, oh man,
- 1:11:31Speaker 3: they should have had a better plan for this. They
- 1:11:33Speaker 3: should have known this was coming. Now maybe Kenneth Walker
- 1:11:36Speaker 3: is the savior of that franchise. Maybe Kenneth Walker is
- 1:11:39Speaker 3: a guy that can erase all the wrongs that may
- 1:11:43Speaker 3: or may not exist on a personnel sheet for the
- 1:11:46Speaker 3: Kansas City Chiefs.
- 1:11:47Speaker 2: I'm not sure. I don't know.
- 1:11:50Speaker 3: What I do know is that what we saw in
- 1:11:53Speaker 3: week one, all the hope that greatness is going to
- 1:11:57Speaker 3: translate and all the hope that you know, a bad
- 1:12:00Speaker 3: performance is going to be fixed later on.
- 1:12:02Speaker 2: In almost every case, you're going to get something that
- 1:12:05Speaker 2: is more... You're going to get something that.
- 1:12:09Speaker 3: Is more dissimilar to the bad or the good in
- 1:12:13Speaker 3: week three, four, five than consistency.
- 1:12:16Speaker 2: That's what football does to you.
- 1:12:17Speaker 12: Oh, man.
- 1:12:18Speaker 3: I'm sitting here at Smith's, and they have this robot now.
- 1:12:24Speaker 3: They have a robot named Tally at the Smith's Marketplace.
- 1:12:27Speaker 3: It's like a Roomba With a tower on it. And
- 1:12:31Speaker 3: this robot just buzzes around. It has a little screen
- 1:12:36Speaker 3: face with eyes and it blinks. And it takes inventory
- 1:12:39Speaker 3: of stuff on the shelves as it scoots around the store.
- 1:12:43Speaker 4: I have not noticed the Smith's robot.
- 1:12:46Speaker 2: They're pretty new. I think maybe only the Smith's Marketplace
- 1:12:49Speaker 2: have them right now.
- 1:12:50Speaker 3: Because, you know, it's a big store. But Tally was
- 1:12:54Speaker 3: sitting here on its charging station right next to me.
- 1:12:57Speaker 3: the whole time i've been doing the show and just
- 1:12:59Speaker 3: now tally's decided i'm gonna start doing my thing and
- 1:13:02Speaker 3: just be and started cruising around all right.
- 1:13:05Speaker 4: And make you nervous you know how i feel.
- 1:13:07Speaker 3: About the a i in the robots in the android
- 1:13:10Speaker 3: takeover i'm not tally is uh... not humanoid in any
- 1:13:14Speaker 3: way tally looks like a vacuum so i'm not overly
- 1:13:18Speaker 3: disturbed by tally but uh... these humanoid robots they do
- 1:13:21Speaker 3: freak me out uh.
- 1:13:23Speaker 5: by the way We just did our Sunday Night Football preview.
- 1:13:27Speaker 5: That's 6.20 p.m. kickoff on NBC, that Colts-Chiefs game. I mean,
- 1:13:33Speaker 5: and if you love me out there listening, you're going
- 1:13:36Speaker 5: to pull for the Colts to win. If you don't
- 1:13:37Speaker 5: care about me or hate me, then whatever. You can
- 1:13:40Speaker 5: root for the Chiefs, I suppose. By the way, Seahawks,
- 1:13:44Speaker 5: we will have their game against the Cardinals Sunday afternoon.
- 1:13:49Speaker 5: That's a 12 p.m. start for pregame, noon pregame game.
- 1:13:54Speaker 5: And 225 kickoff, you can hear right here on your
- 1:13:57Speaker 5: home of the Seahawks. ESPN 700, 92.1 FM.
- 1:14:00Speaker 2: I'm glad you said that.
- 1:14:02Speaker 3: I don't think my mouth would form those words as
- 1:14:05Speaker 3: a Niner fan.
- 1:14:06Speaker 5: Maybe I just need to do the Seahawks promotions during
- 1:14:09Speaker 5: the show so that you don't have to.
- 1:14:11Speaker 4: Is that a good compromise? Even though I, as.
- 1:14:15Speaker 5: Someone who I don't root for their rival like you do,
- 1:14:19Speaker 5: and I still kind of have some disdain for the Seahawks,
- 1:14:22Speaker 5: but I.
- 1:14:23Speaker 4: I can put that aside much easier than you can,
- 1:14:25Speaker 4: I think.
- 1:14:26Speaker 3: All right, we've got to take a break here from Smith.
- 1:14:29Speaker 3: The Daily Dump is coming up next. Josh Allen, we
- 1:14:31Speaker 3: saw great things from Josh Allen last night. I have
- 1:14:34Speaker 3: to admit, I was not aware that Josh Allen is
- 1:14:38Speaker 3: actually within striking distance of a record in the NFL
- 1:14:41Speaker 3: that a quarterback has no business holding, but he potentially could.
- 1:14:46Speaker 2: At some point in his career.
- 1:14:47Speaker 3: I'll tell you what that is during the Daily Dump next.
- 1:14:49Speaker 2: This is the Sean O'Connell Show on ESPN 700 and 92.1 FM.
- 1:14:58Speaker 2: Feeling out of the loop?
- 1:15:00Speaker 7: Let's catch up on today's biggest headlines in the Daily
- 1:15:02Speaker 7: News Dump, where we flush out the biggest stories of
- 1:15:05Speaker 7: the day on the Sean O'Connell Show and Utah's number
- 1:15:09Speaker 7: one sports talk, ESPN 792.1 FM, brought to you by
- 1:15:14Speaker 7: Valley Plumbing, Heating, and Cooling. Just look for the truck
- 1:15:17Speaker 7: with the duck.
- 1:15:18Speaker 3: Welcome back to the Sean O'Connell Show.
- 1:15:23Speaker 9: We're here at.
- 1:15:25Speaker 2: The Smiths in Woods Cross, 614 West, 2600 South. Two
- 1:15:30Speaker 2: pairs of game tickets. Well, actually one pair of game
- 1:15:32Speaker 2: tickets left.
- 1:15:33Speaker 3: Our guy Lynn came by and snagged the first pair
- 1:15:36Speaker 3: of game tickets, but we do have.
- 1:15:39Speaker 2: One more pair of game tickets to give away.
- 1:15:41Speaker 3: You have to show us $ 35 or more.
- 1:15:44Speaker 2: In Pepsi purchases.
- 1:15:46Speaker 3: We also have tailgate passes to the Smiths tailgate tent.
- 1:15:48Speaker 3: We have Smiths gift cards. And if you come in
- 1:15:51Speaker 3: right now, you have... All of Woods Cross High School,
- 1:15:54Speaker 3: it would appear, has descended upon the deli area where
- 1:15:58Speaker 3: we're broadcasting.
- 1:16:00Speaker 4: Must be lunchtime at Woods Cross High.
- 1:16:03Speaker 2: It must be. Or do they get out early on Fridays?
- 1:16:06Speaker 4: It could be early out.
- 1:16:07Speaker 2: Or both?
- 1:16:08Speaker 5: Either way, Woods Cross High is basically right next door,
- 1:16:13Speaker 5: so that makes sense why it might be a popular
- 1:16:15Speaker 5: lunch spot for the high school kids.
- 1:16:18Speaker 2: And you know what? The kids are all right. They
- 1:16:19Speaker 2: all seem to be polite and kind. upstanding young men
- 1:16:24Speaker 2: and women here.
- 1:16:25Speaker 5: Are they treating Tally well? That's the most important thing, right?
- 1:16:29Speaker 3: Maybe that's why Tally exited the docking station and left.
- 1:16:34Speaker 3: Maybe Tally was just like, oh, the teenagers are here,
- 1:16:36Speaker 3: so the robot left. All right, Valley Plumbing, Heating, and Cooling,
- 1:16:40Speaker 3: the truck with the duck, for all of your drain cleaning,
- 1:16:43Speaker 3: your plumbing, your HVAC needs, even if you've got a
- 1:16:46Speaker 3: big excavation job, We'd love for you to make a
- 1:16:49Speaker 3: call to the truck with the duck. Or better yet,
- 1:16:51Speaker 3: go to valleyplumbing.com. You can make an appointment right there.
- 1:16:54Speaker 3: You don't even have to pick up the phone. Watching
- 1:16:57Speaker 3: NFL football last night. Nice performance by the Buffalo Bills again.
- 1:17:02Speaker 3: I am not panicking about what's going on with the
- 1:17:06Speaker 3: Detroit Lions if I'm a fan in Detroit because at
- 1:17:09Speaker 3: some point you're going to get your two starting safeties
- 1:17:11Speaker 3: back and your defense is probably.
- 1:17:13Speaker 2: Going to look a little bit better. I'm just going
- 1:17:16Speaker 2: to put that out there.
- 1:17:17Speaker 3: Josh Allen, 20 of 31, 248, three touchdowns, no interceptions.
- 1:17:23Speaker 3: He also ran the ball 14 times for 69 yards,
- 1:17:27Speaker 3: and more importantly for the sake of this discussion, two touchdowns.
- 1:17:33Speaker 4: Just a monster performance for Joshie.
- 1:17:35Speaker 2: He's an incredible player. We know that.
- 1:17:38Speaker 3: Where is Josh Allen, James, on the all-time rushing touchdowns
- 1:17:42Speaker 3: list in NFL history?
- 1:17:45Speaker 5: I was just going to say, I don't know, I'm
- 1:17:48Speaker 5: going to have to guess, but I was just going
- 1:17:50Speaker 5: to bring up on the Thursday Night Football broadcast after
- 1:17:54Speaker 5: his first rushing touchdown, they were talking about how he's
- 1:17:58Speaker 5: about to overtake Thurman Thomas, I think, for the franchise
- 1:18:02Speaker 5: rushing touchdowns record, which is just insane because that's a quarterback,
- 1:18:08Speaker 5: and also Thurman Thomas was an all-time great. He's an MVP,
- 1:18:12Speaker 5: he's a Hall of Famer.
- 1:18:14Speaker 2: He's in the ring of honor at Highmark Stadium.
- 1:18:17Speaker 3: They had to move his name over from the old
- 1:18:20Speaker 3: site to the new site. Josh Allen is now in
- 1:18:24Speaker 3: the top 20. He's now tied for 18th in all-time
- 1:18:29Speaker 3: rushing touchdowns. To nobody's surprise, every single person on the
- 1:18:33Speaker 3: list higher than him played the running back position. This
- 1:18:37Speaker 3: is a record that a quarterback has no business chasing.
- 1:18:42Speaker 3: in the modern national football league this is a pocket passer,
- 1:18:46Speaker 3: stand there and chuck the ball around type league. Josh
- 1:18:50Speaker 3: Allen has 83 rushing touchdowns all in a Buffalo Bills uniform.
- 1:18:56Speaker 2: He is in what, year nine?
- 1:18:59Speaker 5: Yeah, what was it, 2017 I want to say is
- 1:19:02Speaker 5: when he came in, maybe 2018.
- 1:19:03Speaker 3: Yeah, he's... Emmitt Smith played 25 seasons in the NFL
- 1:19:09Speaker 3: and got to 164 rushing touchdowns.
- 1:19:12Speaker 5: He's halfway there with way less years.
- 1:19:15Speaker 2: He's halfway there with fewer years. This is the craziest part, okay?
- 1:19:20Speaker 3: So, like, the guys above Josh Allen on this list
- 1:19:23Speaker 3: belong above Josh Allen on this list. Emmitt Smith, LaDainian Thomasman,
- 1:19:27Speaker 3: Derrick Henry, Marcus Allen, Adrian Peterson, Walter Payton, Jim Brown,
- 1:19:31Speaker 3: John Riggins. Sean Alexander and Marshall Falk are tied for ninth.
- 1:19:35Speaker 4: Hall of Famer, Hall of Famer, Hall of Famer, Hall
- 1:19:37Speaker 4: of Famer, yeah.
- 1:19:39Speaker 2: I don't think Priest Holmes, he's not in the Hall
- 1:19:41Speaker 2: of Fame. He's not going to get in the Hall
- 1:19:43Speaker 2: of Fame. He's not.
- 1:19:43Speaker 4: He's an exception. He was really good, though, speaking of
- 1:19:46Speaker 4: the Chiefs.
- 1:19:47Speaker 3: Priest Holmes, he's 16th. He's got 86 rushing touchdowns. So
- 1:19:49Speaker 3: Josh Allen is going to pass him up in week four, okay?
- 1:19:53Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 1:19:54Speaker 2: He might pass him up next week.
- 1:19:57Speaker 3: And, like, everyone else is a Hall of Famer, basically.
- 1:20:01Speaker 3: Here's the crazy part about this list. These are the
- 1:20:05Speaker 3: names of guys that are now below Josh Allen on
- 1:20:09Speaker 3: the all-time rushing touchdowns list.
- 1:20:12Speaker 2: Jim Taylor, Corey Dillon, Otis Anderson, Frank Gore. Frank Gore is.
- 1:20:18Speaker 3: The guy that everyone talks about being like the longevity
- 1:20:21Speaker 3: case for a Hall of Fame, right?
- 1:20:23Speaker 2: He was never the.
- 1:20:24Speaker 3: Best running back in the league, but he was a
- 1:20:26Speaker 3: guy who was the best for the longest. And they're like,
- 1:20:29Speaker 3: is that a reason to put somebody in the Hall
- 1:20:30Speaker 3: of Fame or not? Josh Allen has more rushing touchdowns
- 1:20:33Speaker 3: than Frank Gore has. He's got more than Edger and James.
- 1:20:36Speaker 3: He's got more than Ricky Waters. He's got more than
- 1:20:39Speaker 3: Tony Dorsett. The next quarterback on this list is number 27,
- 1:20:44Speaker 3: and that is Cam Newton, who had 75 rushing touchdowns,
- 1:20:49Speaker 3: and he's tied with Clinton Portis. Josh Allen has more
- 1:20:52Speaker 3: rushing touchdowns than Earl Campbell.
- 1:20:56Speaker 2: It's insane the people he passed up and that he
- 1:20:59Speaker 2: passed up long ago.
- 1:21:01Speaker 3: Eddie George, Maurice Jones Drew, Fred Taylor, Todd Gurley. We
- 1:21:06Speaker 3: think of these guys as, like, amazing, awesome running backs
- 1:21:10Speaker 3: in the NFL, in recent NFL history. We think of
- 1:21:13Speaker 3: these guys as, like, put them on a pedestal. We
- 1:21:17Speaker 3: love that dude. Josh Allen has 15 more rushing touchdowns
- 1:21:21Speaker 3: than Maurice Jones Drew and Eddie George did in their
- 1:21:24Speaker 3: illustrious careers.
- 1:21:26Speaker 6: What?
- 1:21:26Speaker 3: I feel like I am in banana land with a
- 1:21:29Speaker 3: quarterback having this level of rushing and touchdown scoring proficiency.
- 1:21:35Speaker 3: He is going to pass this year definitively. If he
- 1:21:39Speaker 3: stays healthy, Josh Allen is definitely going to pass. Marshawn Lynch,
- 1:21:45Speaker 3: Priest Holmes, Curtis Martin, Eric Dickerson.
- 1:21:48Speaker 2: Frank O'Harris, and Jerome Bettis.
- 1:21:50Speaker 3: He will pass those guys this year if he stays
- 1:21:53Speaker 3: anything close to his regular career pace.
- 1:21:55Speaker 5: What number does that get him to if he's won
- 1:21:57Speaker 5: more than Jerome Bettis?
- 1:21:59Speaker 2: He would be 12th.
- 1:22:03Speaker 4: But the total rushing touchdowns, is that 90-something?
- 1:22:05Speaker 6: 92.
- 1:22:05Speaker 9: Wow.
- 1:22:08Speaker 3: And then Barry Sanders is at 99. He's 11th all-time
- 1:22:12Speaker 3: on the list. Josh Allen could catch Barry Sanders.
- 1:22:14Speaker 4: Could be a stretch, though, to get there, yeah.
- 1:22:17Speaker 2: But, like, he needs eight.
- 1:22:20Speaker 3: More to catch Jerome Bettis, nine more to beat Jerome Bettis.
- 1:22:25Speaker 2: He's going to have that. He's going to get that
- 1:22:27Speaker 2: this year.
- 1:22:29Speaker 3: Josh Allen is going to end this season probably 11th
- 1:22:34Speaker 3: or more likely 12th on the all-time rushing touchdowns list
- 1:22:37Speaker 3: in the NFL. With less than a decade of time
- 1:22:41Speaker 3: played in the league.
- 1:22:42Speaker 2: As a quarterback.
- 1:22:44Speaker 5: Let me ask you, can you see how far down
- 1:22:48Speaker 5: Lamar Jackson is? Because he seems like a guy that's
- 1:22:51Speaker 5: going to be up pretty high by the end of
- 1:22:53Speaker 5: his career, too.
- 1:22:56Speaker 2: Where is Lamar Jackson?
- 1:22:58Speaker 5: He's below 27th, because that's where you said Cam Newton is.
- 1:23:03Speaker 3: Yes, I think all the active players they have in bold,
- 1:23:06Speaker 3: so I should be able to find. Lamar Jackson is
- 1:23:10Speaker 3: tied for 178th. How many does he have? He has
- 1:23:14Speaker 3: 36 rushing touchdowns. That surprises me.
- 1:23:19Speaker 5: That probably surprises a lot of people that he has
- 1:23:22Speaker 5: less than 40 in his career right now.
- 1:23:24Speaker 2: Okay, so hold on. I just want to make sure
- 1:23:26Speaker 2: when I say this. So Josh Allen.
- 1:23:29Speaker 2: He's up here.
- 1:23:30Speaker 3: He's got 83. He came into the league in 2018.
- 1:23:33Speaker 3: He's got 83 rushing touchdowns. Christian McCaffrey came into the
- 1:23:38Speaker 3: league a year before Josh Allen and has 62.
- 1:23:42Speaker 2: Oh, my gosh.
- 1:23:44Speaker 3: That's Christian McCaffrey, who is, in most people's estimation, either
- 1:23:49Speaker 3: the best or one of the top three running backs.
- 1:23:51Speaker 3: in the league and has been uh... i guess helpers
- 1:23:55Speaker 3: played a factor for christian.
- 1:23:56Speaker 5: He has three but he's the standard right now it's
- 1:23:58Speaker 5: like him and their kenry and then sake one barkley
- 1:24:02Speaker 5: he hasn't quite had the consistency year-to-year but he is
- 1:24:05Speaker 5: someone else you get it talk about it's like those
- 1:24:08Speaker 5: three guys yeah.
- 1:24:12Speaker 2: Just bananas derrick henry uh.
- 1:24:14Speaker 3: will probably not catch emmett smith before it's all said
- 1:24:19Speaker 3: and done i don't think He's got 125.
- 1:24:21Speaker 2: He's third.
- 1:24:23Speaker 4: He just got into third.
- 1:24:26Speaker 7: Yes.
- 1:24:27Speaker 3: He's got 125 career rushing touchdowns. I'm not even convinced
- 1:24:30Speaker 3: he'll catch LT at 145 rushing touchdowns before it's all
- 1:24:35Speaker 3: said and done. But Josh Allen, I guess it depends
- 1:24:40Speaker 3: on how many more years you think Josh Allen is
- 1:24:42Speaker 3: going to play.
- 1:24:43Speaker 5: Yeah, and listen, here's the other remarkable thing about Josh Allen.
- 1:24:47Speaker 5: You think of him as a pass-first quarterback, which he is.
- 1:24:50Speaker 5: He definitely uses his arm first. That's the way that
- 1:24:54Speaker 5: every offensive coordinator has used him. But I think that's
- 1:24:59Speaker 5: a reason why I think a lot of us underestimate
- 1:25:04Speaker 5: just how prolific a runner he is. He's also not
- 1:25:06Speaker 5: a guy that just, like we talked about with Lamar
- 1:25:09Speaker 5: Jackson or even Cam Newton, Michael Vick, all these other guys,
- 1:25:13Speaker 5: that will get a 30-yard run every couple of plays, right?
- 1:25:18Speaker 5: That's not the way that Josh... Josh Allen runs the ball.
- 1:25:22Speaker 5: He's more of like five yards a carry, the brotherly shove,
- 1:25:29Speaker 5: Buffalo's version of that where they do the tush push
- 1:25:32Speaker 5: and he gets you a third down or fourth down
- 1:25:34Speaker 5: conversion or a touchdown at the goal line.
- 1:25:36Speaker 4: That's what you picture with Josh Allen.
- 1:25:39Speaker 5: But when you total all the numbers, you're like, holy cow,
- 1:25:43Speaker 5: he's actually more productive than all those other guys we
- 1:25:46Speaker 5: just mentioned that we think of as the standard of
- 1:25:50Speaker 5: running quarterbacks and it's, it surprises you.
- 1:25:54Speaker 3: Um, do you know what, I want to fit one
- 1:25:57Speaker 3: more storyline here into the, uh, the daily dump. Do
- 1:26:01Speaker 3: you know what high rocks is James?
- 1:26:03Speaker 4: Uh, I have just starting to learn about it. I
- 1:26:07Speaker 4: just heard about it.
- 1:26:07Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 1:26:08Speaker 2: Okay. So I don't know a lot.
- 1:26:10Speaker 3: High rocks is like the new, as far as I
- 1:26:14Speaker 3: can tell, it's the new, uh, like CrossFit, uh.
- 1:26:17Speaker 5: Yeah, I don't know a lot about it, but yeah,
- 1:26:20Speaker 5: it's something like that.
- 1:26:22Speaker 3: It's a standardized indoor global fitness race that combines running
- 1:26:26Speaker 3: with functional workout stations. As far as I can tell,
- 1:26:29Speaker 3: it's like less lifting and more cardio version of CrossFit.
- 1:26:35Speaker 2: So there's like, yeah, so.
- 1:26:37Speaker 3: You do like the sled push, the sled pull, burpee,
- 1:26:40Speaker 3: broad jumps.
- 1:26:41Speaker 2: They do rows.
- 1:26:42Speaker 3: Okay, there is some farmer carries, wall balls, things like this.
- 1:26:45Speaker 3: So it's... High Rocks is CrossFit, okay?
- 1:26:49Speaker 2: Whatever. This is an insane story. These athletes, impressive.
- 1:26:59Speaker 3: The endurance that these people have, the willingness to push
- 1:27:03Speaker 3: through fatigue and pain, whatever, is amazing, right? Last week
- 1:27:08Speaker 3: there was, or no, earlier this week, No, last week
- 1:27:11Speaker 3: is the competition. Last week there was a very, very high-level,
- 1:27:15Speaker 3: high-rocks competition where the winner, like you see in marathons sometimes,
- 1:27:20Speaker 3: like you see in ultra-marathons, the winner of this event
- 1:27:24Speaker 3: soiled themselves during the event, okay?
- 1:27:28Speaker 2: And just kept going.
- 1:27:31Speaker 3: Because that's what you do, right?
- 1:27:33Speaker 2: Can't stop.
- 1:27:34Speaker 4: Got to keep pushing forward.
- 1:27:36Speaker 3: You're racing the clock. uh and you see this in
- 1:27:39Speaker 3: like the boston marathon the new york marathon you see
- 1:27:42Speaker 3: this all the time people who are competitive runners they're
- 1:27:45Speaker 3: just like oh that sucks i'm gonna keep going people
- 1:27:48Speaker 3: who are just like wanting to reach the finish line
- 1:27:50Speaker 3: they usually find a station and like go yeah go
- 1:27:53Speaker 3: into the like porta potties but like the competitive runners
- 1:27:55Speaker 3: you'll see this uh this happened in high rocks but
- 1:27:59Speaker 3: here's the problem it's indoors and it's on like a
- 1:28:02Speaker 3: It's not like a course where, like, other people are there.
- 1:28:04Speaker 2: You know what I mean? You're not running on a
- 1:28:06Speaker 2: street or, like, cross-country style. Oh, no.
- 1:28:09Speaker 3: Yes, this person finished in one hour, one minute, and
- 1:28:12Speaker 3: 23 seconds, won the race.
- 1:28:15Speaker 2: And because of this, High Rocks.
- 1:28:19Speaker 3: Was like, okay, we actually need a new rule where
- 1:28:23Speaker 3: you're not allowed to do that.
- 1:28:25Speaker 4: You're disqualified if you poop.
- 1:28:27Speaker 6: Okay.
- 1:28:29Speaker 3: Imagine participating in a sport where they have to Because
- 1:28:33Speaker 3: of something that actually happened, they.
- 1:28:34Speaker 2: Have to put in a rule that you can't poop
- 1:28:36Speaker 2: yourself in this sport it's amazing.
- 1:28:40Speaker 3: So all of you high rocks people out there i
- 1:28:43Speaker 3: hope you are achieving your fitness goals i have strong
- 1:28:47Speaker 3: admiration for your endurance and your stick-to-it-edness please don't be
- 1:28:52Speaker 3: quite this serious about it where you just keep it
- 1:28:55Speaker 3: rolling even after it's running down your.
- 1:28:58Speaker 4: Leg or you know i Take some Imodium before the race.
- 1:29:02Speaker 2: I don't know.
- 1:29:03Speaker 3: Yeah, hopefully you can avoid it. So that's the perfect
- 1:29:07Speaker 3: story for a daily dump.
- 1:29:09Speaker 5: It feels dangerous to say just don't eat hours before,
- 1:29:14Speaker 5: but I don't know. Maybe that's something that these competitors
- 1:29:18Speaker 5: are going to have to figure out nutritionally. Like, hey,
- 1:29:21Speaker 5: I need to make sure that I don't need to go.
- 1:29:24Speaker 3: During the competition i can't imagine the level of dedication
- 1:29:27Speaker 3: these high level runners and and now this high rocks
- 1:29:30Speaker 3: person has to where you're just like this thing is
- 1:29:33Speaker 3: televised there's like cameras there where you're just like yep
- 1:29:36Speaker 3: i'm just gonna keep going doesn't bother me like you
- 1:29:39Speaker 3: are you are that is a that is a tiger
- 1:29:41Speaker 3: woods michael jordan.
- 1:29:43Speaker 2: Mentality like no shame at all costs No shame. Winning
- 1:29:47Speaker 2: is all that matters. That's bananas. All right. We've got
- 1:29:50Speaker 2: to take a break here.
- 1:29:51Speaker 3: Lee Sterling from Paramount Sports joins us next for the
- 1:29:54Speaker 3: Picks of the Week. Coordinator's Corner coming up right around
- 1:29:58Speaker 3: the corner with Colton Swan. Our two pairs of game
- 1:30:02Speaker 3: tickets have been claimed, but we still have tailgate passes
- 1:30:05Speaker 3: and Smith gift cards. If you come see us in
- 1:30:08Speaker 3: Woods Cross at 614 West, 2600 South, Sean O'Connell Show
- 1:30:10Speaker 3: on ESPN 700 and 92.1 FM.
- 1:30:19Speaker 7: You are listening to The Sean O'Connell Show, your source
- 1:30:22Speaker 7: for the best youth football coverage. Here's O.C. from the
- 1:30:26Speaker 7: Murdoch Hyundai Studio of ESPN 700 at 92.1 FM.
- 1:30:36Speaker 2: Welcome back to The Sean O'Connell Show.
- 1:30:38Speaker 3: Welcome in the number one handicapper in the business, Lee
- 1:30:42Speaker 3: Sterling of Paramount Sports, friend of mine, friend of the show.
- 1:30:46Speaker 3: Off to a hot start in the college football season.
- 1:30:48Speaker 3: Also a UFC card this weekend and a UFC card
- 1:30:51Speaker 3: coming to Salt Lake City again in just a couple
- 1:30:54Speaker 3: of weeks on the Utah bye week. So we'll have
- 1:30:57Speaker 3: lots to discuss with Lee as we continue. Big game tonight.
- 1:31:00Speaker 3: We'll talk about it as Lee gives us some picks here.
- 1:31:03Speaker 2: Lee, welcome to the show. How are you, sir?
- 1:31:05Speaker 12: I am great. Going on average about four and a half,
- 1:31:08Speaker 12: five hours sleep. But when you're winning in footballs almost
- 1:31:12Speaker 12: every night, it's spectacular. Let's just hit real quick on
- 1:31:16Speaker 12: the main fight on Saturday night. Pantoja or Van? Which
- 1:31:21Speaker 12: side are you going?
- 1:31:23Speaker 2: Pantoja.
- 1:31:23Speaker 3: I think that the arm injury was a fluke. I
- 1:31:27Speaker 3: think Van is giving himself too much credit. You cause
- 1:31:31Speaker 3: the injury by catching the kick and pushing him back,
- 1:31:34Speaker 3: but that fight goes a lot differently if he stays
- 1:31:36Speaker 3: healthy and doesn't dislocate his elbow.
- 1:31:40Speaker 12: Yeah, I mean, the line was minus 200 in that fight.
- 1:31:43Speaker 12: Now he's catching plus 110, 115. I think he's going
- 1:31:47Speaker 12: to be like a snake. He's going to just slowly
- 1:31:50Speaker 12: just work and work and work and eventually take over
- 1:31:55Speaker 12: and maybe even get a submission, round three, four, or five.
- 1:31:57Speaker 2: Ooh, maybe a finish in the championship rounds. For that
- 1:32:01Speaker 2: UFC card this weekend. All right, let's talk a.
- 1:32:04Speaker 3: Little college football. Let's start with a game tonight. Big
- 1:32:07Speaker 3: 12 implications here. Two of the powers in Texas. Texas Tech,
- 1:32:11Speaker 3: a lot of people think are the best team in
- 1:32:13Speaker 3: the conference. They haven't looked all that great as of yet. Houston,
- 1:32:17Speaker 3: another team that people considered maybe a dark horse. Also,
- 1:32:21Speaker 3: maybe some iffy stuff, but we're only two weeks in.
- 1:32:24Speaker 3: Texas Tech is an eight-point favorite in this game.
- 1:32:28Speaker 2: Surprises me that line.
- 1:32:31Speaker 12: Me too, but they have earned it. You've got to
- 1:32:34Speaker 12: give them respect in the regular season.
- 1:32:36Speaker 2: They've dominated.
- 1:32:37Speaker 12: I think it's Tech, Utah, and BYU, and I think
- 1:32:39Speaker 12: Houston is just a little whisker behind. Now, last year,
- 1:32:45Speaker 12: Houston at home could not play with Tech. They lost 35-11.
- 1:32:48Speaker 12: Their quarterback, Connor Wegman, he got knocked out of the
- 1:32:53Speaker 12: game in the second quarter and never returned. But I'm
- 1:32:56Speaker 12: watching Tech this year, and Even though they have five sacks,
- 1:32:59Speaker 12: the defensive line is not the same. I mean, you're
- 1:33:02Speaker 12: missing Bailey. You're missing Rodriguez at linebacker. Rodriguez for the
- 1:33:06Speaker 12: Dolphins had almost 20 tackles last week. He is an
- 1:33:10Speaker 12: absolute monster. And Will Hammond's not the guy. He's a backup.
- 1:33:14Speaker 12: I think they're going to make a change of quarterback
- 1:33:16Speaker 12: maybe in this game or next week here. I think
- 1:33:20Speaker 12: Tech's going to win the game here 27-24. But I
- 1:33:24Speaker 12: think you take the points. It wouldn't shock me if
- 1:33:26Speaker 12: Houston wins the game outright. Take the eight.
- 1:33:30Speaker 2: All right.
- 1:33:30Speaker 3: I feel like you're confirming what I was already leaning toward,
- 1:33:34Speaker 3: and I always appreciate when that's the case. Lee Sterling
- 1:33:37Speaker 3: is our guest here on the Sean O'Connell Show, giving
- 1:33:39Speaker 3: us picks for the weekend as we get closer to
- 1:33:43Speaker 3: Utah kicking off against Utah State afternoon game. This is
- 1:33:48Speaker 3: going to be the most talked-about game nationally this and
- 1:33:51Speaker 3: already has been this week. LSU, this line went down to, like,
- 1:33:56Speaker 3: minus one for LSU on the injury report. Didn't last long.
- 1:34:02Speaker 3: A lot of people were skeptical, myself included. I think
- 1:34:05Speaker 3: Sam Levitt was always going to play and is going
- 1:34:07Speaker 3: to play. LSU back to being a three-point favorite as
- 1:34:10Speaker 3: Lane Kiffin returns to Oxford for the first time.
- 1:34:13Speaker 2: LSU, Ole Miss, how does it play?
- 1:34:16Speaker 12: Well, how about this? The line went from three... down
- 1:34:19Speaker 12: to about a pick-em for a second, and then oddsmakers
- 1:34:23Speaker 12: said not so fast. He's playing. But I'd say about 98%,
- 1:34:27Speaker 12: 99% chance he suits up. And I think the pressure's
- 1:34:32Speaker 12: on Ole Miss. I think these kids are walking around campus.
- 1:34:35Speaker 12: It's an absolute zoo. They started having concerts on Tuesday night,
- 1:34:41Speaker 12: Country Western Acts. A friend of mine's son is in
- 1:34:44Speaker 12: a fraternity. They're selling– space on their fraternity, that's right,
- 1:34:50Speaker 12: on their fraternity for advertisers. I mean, this is crazy. Banners,
- 1:34:56Speaker 12: they're making money. I guess they're going to make a
- 1:34:58Speaker 12: lot of beer money. But I think that that's a
- 1:35:01Speaker 12: distraction for the Ole Miss kids. I think LSU's going in,
- 1:35:03Speaker 12: this is a business trip, not a Lane Kiffin fan,
- 1:35:07Speaker 12: but I think he owns a big advantage. He knows
- 1:35:10Speaker 12: six of the 11 defenders here on the Ole Miss team,
- 1:35:13Speaker 12: and Two guys I think he's going to target are
- 1:35:15Speaker 12: number two linebacker Jalen Braxton, who was there last year,
- 1:35:19Speaker 12: and number 14 safety Edwin Joseph. So I think Ole
- 1:35:23Speaker 12: Miss' offense is their best unit, but their defense has
- 1:35:26Speaker 12: a propensity to tire out in the third and the
- 1:35:29Speaker 12: fourth quarter. They have breaks in coverage, and I think
- 1:35:32Speaker 12: they have some weaknesses. Give me LSU in a great game.
- 1:35:35Speaker 12: If it's half as good as Texas and Ohio State,
- 1:35:38Speaker 12: we're going to get our money's worth. LSU 41-34.
- 1:35:44Speaker 3: All right, BYU, the hated rival of the Utes here
- 1:35:47Speaker 3: on the home of the Utes.
- 1:35:48Speaker 2: They look really good. I'm not going to lie.
- 1:35:51Speaker 3: They are a good team. And they came away with
- 1:35:55Speaker 3: an impressive win. They covered against Arizona last week. Arizona
- 1:35:58Speaker 3: is one of those teams that I think is on
- 1:36:00Speaker 3: the rise in the Big 12.
- 1:36:02Speaker 2: And now it's Colorado State.
- 1:36:03Speaker 3: And Colorado State, I think, from what we've seen of
- 1:36:06Speaker 3: them so far, they're going to be pretty respectable teams.
- 1:36:09Speaker 3: They're going to be respectable enough, at least, in the
- 1:36:11Speaker 3: mid-major world. But BYU is a big favorite here, 17.5-point
- 1:36:16Speaker 3: favorites against the Rams, who've done a good job of
- 1:36:19Speaker 3: turning their opponents over.
- 1:36:21Speaker 2: That's their hope in this one. Can BYU cover again?
- 1:36:25Speaker 6: You're right, BYU.
- 1:36:26Speaker 12: I didn't think they'd come together this quick, but they have.
- 1:36:30Speaker 12: A lot of people know Jim O'Rourke. Jim O'Rourke is
- 1:36:32Speaker 12: a very respected coach. I mean, he could end up
- 1:36:35Speaker 12: back at Washington. Don't be shocked if that happens in
- 1:36:38Speaker 12: a couple years. He built UConn into a respectable team
- 1:36:42Speaker 12: late last year in the bowl game. UConn was a
- 1:36:46Speaker 12: team you didn't want to face here. I think BYU
- 1:36:49Speaker 12: might be a little flacky for this game. Colorado State's quarterback, Henji,
- 1:36:54Speaker 12: from Oklahoma State, looks good so far. He brought over
- 1:36:58Speaker 12: a running back, Mel Harris, from UConn. Kid's averaging over
- 1:37:01Speaker 12: 13 yards per carry. He's not going to keep that
- 1:37:04Speaker 12: average up, but This is a kid that knows how
- 1:37:06Speaker 12: to run downhill. I think BYU wins 35-24, but Colorado
- 1:37:11Speaker 12: State covers.
- 1:37:12Speaker 3: Okay, all right. Me and you are in lockstep right now, Lee.
- 1:37:16Speaker 3: I don't know if I should feel nervous about that
- 1:37:18Speaker 3: or good about it. I'm going to stick with good
- 1:37:20Speaker 3: right now. We'll say best for last with Utah, Utah State.
- 1:37:24Speaker 3: NFL has been really interesting so far. Let's go with
- 1:37:27Speaker 3: the Seahawks here. The defending Super Bowl champs are four-and-a-half-point
- 1:37:31Speaker 3: favorites against the lowly Cardinals.
- 1:37:33Speaker 2: How does this game play out?
- 1:37:35Speaker 12: What I've seen so many times before, a quarterback comes
- 1:37:38Speaker 12: into a game as a backup, and teams a lot
- 1:37:42Speaker 12: of times have no real answer for him once they
- 1:37:45Speaker 12: get going. They just don't prepare for him and give
- 1:37:47Speaker 12: him credit. I think that Drew Locke is a capable backup,
- 1:37:52Speaker 12: unlike some of these other guys. But even Carson Wentz
- 1:37:55Speaker 12: had a good game last week. Vikings and Seahawks here.
- 1:38:01Speaker 12: The quarterbacks got hurt, and both those backups shown well.
- 1:38:04Speaker 12: But Jacoby Brissett, when he's in a rhythm, he's a
- 1:38:07Speaker 12: good quarterback. He can go three, four, five games in
- 1:38:10Speaker 12: a row and play well. Watch his tape last week
- 1:38:14Speaker 12: against the Chargers, spreading the ball around. They're running the
- 1:38:17Speaker 12: ball now with love. They've always had decent running backs.
- 1:38:20Speaker 12: Now they have a bell cow running back. And I
- 1:38:24Speaker 12: just think with time to study Drew Locke, it's going
- 1:38:26Speaker 12: to be the difference. Seattle wins in a dogfight 24-27.
- 1:38:30Speaker 12: but I think the right side, take the cards.
- 1:38:33Speaker 3: You can hear that game right here on ESPN 792.1 FM.
- 1:38:37Speaker 3: Game of the week is the Chargers, who are seven-point
- 1:38:40Speaker 3: favorites against the Raiders, Lee.
- 1:38:43Speaker 12: Yep, they want to get that game for free. I'll
- 1:38:45Speaker 12: give them that game on me. Just call 800-400- 9-7-4-1. First,
- 1:38:51Speaker 12: five callers. I'm going to give it to them for free.
- 1:38:54Speaker 12: Chargers and Raiders, 800-400-9-7-4-1. And what a run it's been here.
- 1:39:00Speaker 12: We've won all three weeks so far in the football.
- 1:39:03Speaker 12: You want to give us a shot? NFL, we have
- 1:39:06Speaker 12: what's called the Sunday Golden Ticket. Five selections, 75 bucks.
- 1:39:11Speaker 12: And last week went 4-1 there. Last year went 14
- 1:39:14Speaker 12: out of 18 weeks. So, Five selections, $ 75 in the NFL.
- 1:39:19Speaker 12: Or you want to try college and NFL on our
- 1:39:22Speaker 12: phone service. We rate the games from 10 to 50 units,
- 1:39:25Speaker 12: normally $ 397 through the end of the month, through September 30th.
- 1:39:29Speaker 12: Use coupon code SAVE100 in the box at checkout. SAVE100,
- 1:39:33Speaker 12: just $ 297. 800-400-9741, ParamountSports.com.
- 1:39:34Speaker 2: All right.
- 1:39:43Speaker 3: Utah is 28-point favorites over the Little Brother. The Battle
- 1:39:48Speaker 3: of the Brothers, Utah State coming down, Bronco Mendenhall, he
- 1:39:51Speaker 3: knows this Utah team and this Utah staff and this
- 1:39:54Speaker 3: Utah environment pretty well. Offensive coordinator was on his staff
- 1:39:59Speaker 3: last year up in Logan. 28's a big number for Utah.
- 1:40:03Speaker 3: They've looked impressive through two weeks. Can they get it done,
- 1:40:06Speaker 3: and can they cover against the Aggies?
- 1:40:08Speaker 12: It is a big number, but I think actually Utah
- 1:40:11Speaker 12: State's down from last year. I think the right move
- 1:40:15Speaker 12: is to go, like I said, they went away from
- 1:40:17Speaker 12: McKay Hillstead to Grady Brostrout, so they're no worse for that.
- 1:40:22Speaker 12: They are really good. Bronco Mendenhall is an underdog, is
- 1:40:25Speaker 12: always strong. They're 7-1 against the spread as a dog.
- 1:40:30Speaker 12: But I think this Utah team is different here. I
- 1:40:34Speaker 12: think they can handle teams like that. I think they're
- 1:40:36Speaker 12: going to be able to score. And then on defense,
- 1:40:38Speaker 12: it starts up front. I love the San Jose State transfer.
- 1:40:42Speaker 12: This kid, Mo, is something else in the middle of
- 1:40:44Speaker 12: the line here. So even in 2024, when the youths
- 1:40:50Speaker 12: here were a pretty big favorite here, they still won
- 1:40:56Speaker 12: big here. So I think they're going to win this game.
- 1:40:59Speaker 12: I'm going to lay the points here. Utah, 48-17 over
- 1:41:04Speaker 12: Utah State.
- 1:41:05Speaker 2: All right.
- 1:41:05Speaker 3: Utah to win and cover, according to Lee Sterling. And, look,
- 1:41:09Speaker 3: he's the best in the business. That's why we have
- 1:41:11Speaker 3: him on. Lee, good stuff as always. You and I
- 1:41:16Speaker 3: are in close accord on these picks, and so I'm
- 1:41:19Speaker 3: going to have to follow on the UFC ones as
- 1:41:23Speaker 3: well for the weekend.
- 1:41:24Speaker 12: Okay. Sounds good. Let's make some hay this weekend, and
- 1:41:29Speaker 12: everyone have a great weekend and be safe.
- 1:41:31Speaker 2: Thanks, Lee. Appreciate you.
- 1:41:33Speaker 12: Okay, see you.
- 1:41:34Speaker 3: Lee Sterling, best in the business. ParamountSports.com, 800-400-3741. Big thanks
- 1:41:43Speaker 3: to Lee for jumping on with us, as he always does. Sorry, 800-400-9741.
- 1:41:48Speaker 3: That's 1-800-400-9741 to get a hold of Lee and to
- 1:41:53Speaker 3: follow or fade whatever you prefer on those picks. For
- 1:41:57Speaker 3: entertainment purposes, of course, here on the Sean O'Connell Show.
- 1:42:00Speaker 3: That brings us to a Friday at 1 o'clock, which
- 1:42:03Speaker 3: means we have Coordinator's Corner coming up and then the
- 1:42:07Speaker 3: airing of grievances, and then we will finish the show
- 1:42:10Speaker 3: giving away two tickets to Five Finger Death Punch. Up next,
- 1:42:14Speaker 3: as we're coming at you from Smiths and Woods Cross,
- 1:42:17Speaker 3: is Colton Swan, the Utah defensive coordinator. Stick around for that,
- 1:42:22Speaker 3: and then get ready to air your grievances at 1.30.
- 1:42:25Speaker 3: It's the Sean O'Connell Show on ESPN 700, 92.1 FM.
- 1:42:31Speaker 7: Let's dive into this week's matchup in the coordinator's corner
- 1:42:34Speaker 7: of the Sean O'Connell Show. OC chats with the coordinators
- 1:42:38Speaker 7: every week of the Utah football season. On your home
- 1:42:41Speaker 7: of the Utes and your home for football, ESPN 792.1 FM.
- 1:42:48Speaker 4: All right, welcome back to the Sean O'Connell Show.
- 1:42:49Speaker 3: Welcome in for Coordinator's Corner this year. We're checking in
- 1:42:53Speaker 3: with the defense, Colton Swan, Utah, D.C., coming off another
- 1:42:57Speaker 3: big victory over Arkansas, getting ready for Utah State.
- 1:43:01Speaker 4: Colton Swan, welcome to the show again. How are you, sir?
- 1:43:05Speaker 6: Good, good. Thanks for having me, OC.
- 1:43:07Speaker 3: All right, so, you know, first blush when you went
- 1:43:10Speaker 3: back and you dug into the film against Arkansas, what'd
- 1:43:14Speaker 3: you like?
- 1:43:14Speaker 4: Maybe what didn't you like about your team's performance?
- 1:43:17Speaker 6: Speaker 4 0 Yeah, I thought that overall we played
- 1:43:21Speaker 6: really hard. I thought the kids, kids ran to the ball. Well,
- 1:43:24Speaker 6: so the effort, you know, the relentless attitude that we
- 1:43:27Speaker 6: talk about was, was there, you know, we had the
- 1:43:30Speaker 6: one turnover I would like to get gotten to. We
- 1:43:34Speaker 6: did get our hands on a lot of balls that
- 1:43:36Speaker 6: we need to make sure that, you know, we come
- 1:43:37Speaker 6: away with two or more turnovers is kind of our
- 1:43:40Speaker 6: goal every game that we're looking at. But I did
- 1:43:44Speaker 6: like the production, you know, from the facts to the
- 1:43:47Speaker 6: PBUs to the TFLs, our production board was way up
- 1:43:52Speaker 6: from the first game. And so it kind of reiterates just,
- 1:43:56Speaker 6: you know, our guys' ability to get to the ball
- 1:43:58Speaker 6: and make plays and just have that kind of tenacious attitude.
- 1:44:02Speaker 3: I'm glad you mentioned the plays where you got a
- 1:44:04Speaker 3: hand on a ball. I was keeping count because that's
- 1:44:07Speaker 3: what you do when you're nitpicking. It was like the
- 1:44:10Speaker 3: one interception could have been four interceptions, maybe five interceptions
- 1:44:13Speaker 3: in this game. The difference between making the play, we
- 1:44:18Speaker 3: talked about this on the show this week, the difference
- 1:44:20Speaker 3: between being in position and you're right there and the
- 1:44:24Speaker 3: sack is almost there or the ball hits your hands
- 1:44:26Speaker 3: and you intercept it or you don't. It's still a PBU.
- 1:44:30Speaker 3: It's still a broken play. for an offense, but obviously
- 1:44:33Speaker 3: it's not the huge momentum swing. Can you coach up
- 1:44:36Speaker 3: those differences, or is it just a guy's got to
- 1:44:38Speaker 3: make a play when that opportunity's there?
- 1:44:41Speaker 2: Well, I mean.
- 1:44:43Speaker 6: That's a great question because sometimes it does. It falls
- 1:44:46Speaker 6: into your lap. It just goes your way. Something just
- 1:44:49Speaker 6: works out just perfectly. We do coach and really work
- 1:44:55Speaker 6: on turnovers and PBUs and batting balls down, things like that.
- 1:44:59Speaker 6: And so we're trying to up the amount of production
- 1:45:03Speaker 6: when it comes to that. you know, are we constantly
- 1:45:06Speaker 6: as defenders, you know, working ball drills and things like that,
- 1:45:10Speaker 6: some things that you would neglect, you know, as a
- 1:45:12Speaker 6: defensive guy that can really show up, you know, in
- 1:45:16Speaker 6: a time where, Hey, we need to have ball skills.
- 1:45:18Speaker 6: We need to be able to, you know, knock these
- 1:45:20Speaker 6: balls down or how to get after a quarterback strip sacks,
- 1:45:23Speaker 6: you know, things like that. So there's a lot of
- 1:45:25Speaker 6: techniques that actually we coach and it goes into it.
- 1:45:28Speaker 6: But at the same time, there are some things that
- 1:45:29Speaker 6: just kind of fall your way. You know, some of
- 1:45:31Speaker 6: those PBUs batted at the line of scrimmage by a
- 1:45:33Speaker 6: defensive lineman will get deflected up in the air and
- 1:45:36Speaker 6: land right in the lap of the linebacker. That happened,
- 1:45:40Speaker 6: you know, in this last game and we weren't able
- 1:45:42Speaker 6: to catch it. And so, you know, things like that
- 1:45:45Speaker 6: that we continue to work on and you just keep
- 1:45:48Speaker 6: putting yourself in those positions and they'll come your way eventually.
- 1:45:52Speaker 3: The I'm working backwards here, I guess the first drive
- 1:45:55Speaker 3: for Arkansas gobbled up about eight minutes of the first
- 1:45:58Speaker 3: quarter and it was pretty methodical. And then when they
- 1:46:02Speaker 3: got down close to scoring position, your team bowed up
- 1:46:05Speaker 3: and forced the field goal instead. I know that a
- 1:46:08Speaker 3: defensive coordinator probably drives you nuts when you see someone
- 1:46:11Speaker 3: kind of building a drive like that. But ultimately, they
- 1:46:14Speaker 3: only came away with the three points there. And then
- 1:46:16Speaker 3: they didn't score again for, you know, 48 minutes or
- 1:46:19Speaker 3: whatever it was.
- 1:46:20Speaker 6: Right.
- 1:46:21Speaker 3: So walk me through that first drive. What were you seeing?
- 1:46:25Speaker 3: What did Arkansas do well? And maybe most importantly, what
- 1:46:28Speaker 3: changed as you got down close to the red zone
- 1:46:31Speaker 3: and your guys were able to keep them out of
- 1:46:32Speaker 3: the end zone?
- 1:46:34Speaker 6: Well, I think just to start off is, yeah, they,
- 1:46:37Speaker 6: their openers who I thought were very good plays. Well,
- 1:46:40Speaker 6: we'll design strategic plays that we're hitting on the outsides,
- 1:46:43Speaker 6: you know, the fake, the reverses, the speed options, the,
- 1:46:47Speaker 6: you know, plays that were, were hitting outside. I think
- 1:46:51Speaker 6: on the very first play, they tried to run an
- 1:46:53Speaker 6: inside zone and got stuffed immediately. And so they kind
- 1:46:56Speaker 6: of went to some other openers that I thought was well-designed. And,
- 1:47:01Speaker 6: you know, as a defense coordinator, you're like, okay, we've
- 1:47:03Speaker 6: got to handle these things, the fake reverses, the speed
- 1:47:06Speaker 6: ops and keep everything in front of us, get, you know,
- 1:47:08Speaker 6: tackle well, make sure that we're keeping stuff, you know,
- 1:47:12Speaker 6: in front and, and, and cupped inside. And, and we
- 1:47:16Speaker 6: did do that, you know, and when our backs got
- 1:47:18Speaker 6: against the wall down there in the red zone, we were,
- 1:47:20Speaker 6: you know, kind of, kind of made a stand there and,
- 1:47:23Speaker 6: and it worked out for us. But I, I, as
- 1:47:25Speaker 6: the defense coordinator and those plays are happening. And it
- 1:47:28Speaker 6: wasn't necessarily anything that we were giving up. It was just,
- 1:47:32Speaker 6: you know, play that they were getting that, you know,
- 1:47:34Speaker 6: we had, we had worked on and they did a
- 1:47:37Speaker 6: good job of going back through and looking at things
- 1:47:40Speaker 6: that are hurt us. in the past here at the
- 1:47:43Speaker 6: University of Utah. And those are plays that were showing
- 1:47:46Speaker 6: up in that first series. And so it was good
- 1:47:48Speaker 6: to see that we were able to, you know, cope
- 1:47:50Speaker 6: with them and make some plays there and nice to,
- 1:47:53Speaker 6: in the red zone, have a step up, you know,
- 1:47:55Speaker 6: and limit them to a field goal. And that's our
- 1:47:57Speaker 6: whole deal is when we get in the red zone,
- 1:47:59Speaker 6: I mean, zero touchdowns got to be, that has to
- 1:48:01Speaker 6: be a field goal. And so it was good to
- 1:48:03Speaker 6: see our defense kind of step up. I thought the
- 1:48:04Speaker 6: guys were triggering really well to the ball and it
- 1:48:07Speaker 6: showed up there late.
- 1:48:09Speaker 3: I'm sure that, you know, people have been talking about it.
- 1:48:12Speaker 3: We've been talking about it a lot this last week.
- 1:48:15Speaker 3: Jaimo had a breakout game. And going back into camp and,
- 1:48:19Speaker 3: you know, everyone was talking about, Hey man, this guy's undersized,
- 1:48:22Speaker 3: but watch what he does. You've talked about how the
- 1:48:25Speaker 3: numbers tell us he's maybe a little small, but he's
- 1:48:28Speaker 3: a great player.
- 1:48:29Speaker 2: Regardless.
- 1:48:29Speaker 3: And we got to see a really nice flash of
- 1:48:31Speaker 3: that against a massive offensive line. I mean, I was,
- 1:48:35Speaker 3: I was watching from the North end zone on one
- 1:48:38Speaker 3: series and it was like, I mean, I wish it
- 1:48:40Speaker 3: would have taken a picture because The right side of
- 1:48:43Speaker 3: their offensive line is like 6'4 and 6'6, and then
- 1:48:46Speaker 3: you got Jai, however tall he really is, 5'10, 5'11,
- 1:48:50Speaker 3: and yet he's the dominant force there, but you got
- 1:48:54Speaker 3: 700 pounds of hog molly staring at him, and he's
- 1:48:58Speaker 3: still making plays. Really nice to see him have that game,
- 1:49:02Speaker 3: and I just want to give you an opportunity to
- 1:49:04Speaker 3: speak to the work that he's put in to get there.
- 1:49:07Speaker 6: Yeah. I mean, and it's, you know, we took him
- 1:49:09Speaker 6: out of the transfer portal. He comes out of San
- 1:49:11Speaker 6: Jose and in watching him, you know, I mean, I'm
- 1:49:14Speaker 6: sure us and every coach in the country that was
- 1:49:16Speaker 6: looking at him in the, in the transfer portal center going, okay,
- 1:49:19Speaker 6: he's undersized. But then you look at the amount of
- 1:49:21Speaker 6: production and the things that he was doing from a
- 1:49:24Speaker 6: technical standpoint, it was like, Holy crap. This kid's a
- 1:49:26Speaker 6: really good player. And, you know, you decide to go
- 1:49:29Speaker 6: on them and, and when you get them here, you're like, okay,
- 1:49:32Speaker 6: let's unwrap this present here and see what we got.
- 1:49:34Speaker 6: And he's lightning in a bottle as, as you know,
- 1:49:38Speaker 6: thousands of people saw on Saturday. And, um, you know,
- 1:49:41Speaker 6: he didn't have the production in the first game against
- 1:49:43Speaker 6: Idaho that he did obviously in this Arkansas game, but
- 1:49:46Speaker 6: we we've known since he got here, how explosive and
- 1:49:49Speaker 6: how productive he is. And he's going to continue that. He's,
- 1:49:53Speaker 6: he's got a great mindset, obviously a great motor. You know,
- 1:49:56Speaker 6: he wants, he wants to do everything right. And he,
- 1:49:59Speaker 6: and he does a full speed and, and we couldn't
- 1:50:01Speaker 6: be more happy with him and his production that he's
- 1:50:03Speaker 6: doing on the defensive side.
- 1:50:04Speaker 3: Um, as, since we're talking about D tackles D line, uh,
- 1:50:09Speaker 3: We saw a really nice pass batted down at the
- 1:50:12Speaker 3: line of scrimmage, which I guess we got to be honest,
- 1:50:14Speaker 3: that's going to be more of a Carson Kalfusi thing
- 1:50:16Speaker 3: than a Jai thing, because he's going to have a
- 1:50:18Speaker 3: harder time getting up into those passing lanes.
- 1:50:21Speaker 4: But how do you grade out that play? It's such
- 1:50:24Speaker 4: an impactful thing.
- 1:50:25Speaker 3: It's not quite a sack, but it's a dead play
- 1:50:28Speaker 3: and it's a momentum stealer from an offense. And when
- 1:50:31Speaker 3: you guys are going through film and you're watching that,
- 1:50:33Speaker 3: and I know you practice it, you know, a ball
- 1:50:36Speaker 3: batted at the line of scrimmage can be a big deal.
- 1:50:39Speaker 6: Oh, big time. And we preach and coach it all
- 1:50:42Speaker 6: the time. We tell our guys, hey, D-line, you know,
- 1:50:46Speaker 6: you're obviously in a pass rush. You're thinking, okay, I'm
- 1:50:49Speaker 6: going to disrupt the pass by getting to the quarterback, right? Well,
- 1:50:52Speaker 6: there's times that you're not getting to the quarterback. And
- 1:50:55Speaker 6: so your help in the pass coverage is to bat
- 1:50:57Speaker 6: the ball down. Right. And so we, we work on timing.
- 1:51:00Speaker 6: We work on getting our hands up, you know, cause
- 1:51:02Speaker 6: the quarterback rarely accounts. He'll account for, you know, pressure
- 1:51:06Speaker 6: and moving in the pocket and escaping those types of things.
- 1:51:09Speaker 6: Rarely does he account for D line, getting their hands up.
- 1:51:12Speaker 6: It's not like you sit there saying, Oh, there's a
- 1:51:13Speaker 6: D tackle there. I've got to make sure I slide
- 1:51:15Speaker 6: over here to the side. Cause I know he's going
- 1:51:17Speaker 6: to jump and bat my ball down. That doesn't happen
- 1:51:19Speaker 6: at a quarterback's mind. And so we feel like that
- 1:51:22Speaker 6: that's kind of a hidden, you know, coverage for us
- 1:51:26Speaker 6: is being able to get these, you know, hands up and, And,
- 1:51:29Speaker 6: you know, there was a couple of times you got to,
- 1:51:30Speaker 6: you know, batted a ball down where a guy was
- 1:51:32Speaker 6: open in the back end. And so it builds out
- 1:51:35Speaker 6: the DBs in the back end and the coverage. So
- 1:51:38Speaker 6: we work on a lot. We talk about it a lot.
- 1:51:40Speaker 6: And obviously Carson Kofusi does an amazing job of it.
- 1:51:43Speaker 6: He's got, you know, great impeccable timing when it comes
- 1:51:46Speaker 6: to batting the ball down. And this really understands, you know,
- 1:51:49Speaker 6: quarterback eyes. And there's a lot that goes into it,
- 1:51:51Speaker 6: but he does a great job.
- 1:51:53Speaker 3: Coach, what do you guys feed Nate Ritchie? It seems
- 1:51:56Speaker 3: like he's a different player. Not that he was ever
- 1:51:59Speaker 3: a bad player, but it seems like he's on a
- 1:52:01Speaker 3: slightly different level this year.
- 1:52:03Speaker 4: And to what do you attribute that?
- 1:52:07Speaker 6: Speaker 3 1st off, I think he's, he's always had that. Well,
- 1:52:11Speaker 6: he had a hell of a game, but he's always
- 1:52:13Speaker 6: had that competitive drive to be great. You know, has
- 1:52:16Speaker 6: he been successful as he has in his first two games? No,
- 1:52:19Speaker 6: but you know, he's always been very competitive and really
- 1:52:23Speaker 6: wants to be great and everything that he does, not
- 1:52:25Speaker 6: just football. And so, you know, you stick with something
- 1:52:29Speaker 6: long enough and you're that competitive, then you're going to start,
- 1:52:32Speaker 6: start to see the results of that. And in these
- 1:52:35Speaker 6: first two games, he's done a great job for us.
- 1:52:37Speaker 6: Like I said, he's one of the older guys on
- 1:52:38Speaker 6: the defense. He really understands the defensive knowledge and terminology
- 1:52:43Speaker 6: and alignment and assignment from a mental standpoint. And then now,
- 1:52:47Speaker 6: you know, putting plays together from a physical standpoint, technical standpoint,
- 1:52:51Speaker 6: the way he's tackling. And he does a really good
- 1:52:54Speaker 6: job of understanding his opponent. He's dialed in on the
- 1:52:59Speaker 6: three things that we talk about defensively that you know
- 1:53:02Speaker 6: before the ball snaps. You know the formation down the distance,
- 1:53:04Speaker 6: the personnel. And you take those three things and what
- 1:53:08Speaker 6: does it give me? And Nate really does a good
- 1:53:10Speaker 6: job with that little cheat sheet. So it's nice to
- 1:53:13Speaker 6: see him be successful.
- 1:53:16Speaker 3: I had to ask Kevin McGiven this question, and I
- 1:53:18Speaker 3: got to ask you the same thing because there's an
- 1:53:21Speaker 3: expectation sometimes from a fan base that when you play
- 1:53:24Speaker 3: a team like Idaho, it's going to be kind of
- 1:53:27Speaker 3: a vanilla game plan offensively and defensively. And then it's
- 1:53:30Speaker 3: going to ramp up more against an opponent like Arkansas.
- 1:53:34Speaker 3: And it seems to me, and you can correct me
- 1:53:37Speaker 3: if I'm wrong here, that you didn't really keep too
- 1:53:40Speaker 3: much in the bag for Idaho. You were showing some
- 1:53:43Speaker 3: stuff and that it didn't ramp up necessarily in a
- 1:53:46Speaker 3: drastic amount.
- 1:53:47Speaker 4: Arkansas.
- 1:53:48Speaker 3: So the question is like, how deep in your bag
- 1:53:50Speaker 3: are you? How, how much of the possibilities of this
- 1:53:54Speaker 3: offense have you showed us so far, this defense, excuse me,
- 1:53:56Speaker 3: have you showed us so far?
- 1:53:58Speaker 6: Well, it's not how I look at it is it's,
- 1:54:02Speaker 6: I don't really, look at the opponent of who they
- 1:54:06Speaker 6: are necessarily of what they're doing. Um, I, I just
- 1:54:10Speaker 6: try to make sure that what we're going to provide
- 1:54:12Speaker 6: defense is they all, all about us and how we
- 1:54:14Speaker 6: can be successful versus certain formations, certain plays. And, uh,
- 1:54:18Speaker 6: you know, I, I, it will continue to, you know,
- 1:54:21Speaker 6: grow in different things and you'll see new things every week. Um,
- 1:54:25Speaker 6: and I feel like we predicate our defense according to
- 1:54:28Speaker 6: what we don't, we're, we're going to see versus an offense. um,
- 1:54:32Speaker 6: you know, and, and what an offense provides and how
- 1:54:34Speaker 6: we feel like we can attack it. Um, and so
- 1:54:37Speaker 6: I think we're very unique in that regard. I think
- 1:54:39Speaker 6: you're going to always see new stuff every week and, uh,
- 1:54:42Speaker 6: and it's, it's going to continue to grow. And, and
- 1:54:45Speaker 6: I'm sure by the end of the season, like, Holy crap,
- 1:54:47Speaker 6: you got this entire defense that, you know, you've ran
- 1:54:50Speaker 6: over 12 weeks and it's like, um, just a package
- 1:54:54Speaker 6: that's kind of keeps changing from week to week. If
- 1:54:56Speaker 6: that makes sense.
- 1:54:58Speaker 4: One more minute here with Colton Swan.
- 1:55:00Speaker 3: Utah defensive coordinator on Coordinator's Corner on the Sean O'Connell Show.
- 1:55:04Speaker 4: What are you seeing from Utah State? What are they offensively?
- 1:55:08Speaker 6: They are a very dynamic. They've got a really good
- 1:55:12Speaker 6: skill set with wide receivers, wide receivers that can run,
- 1:55:15Speaker 6: that can catch the ball or get in and out
- 1:55:17Speaker 6: of breaks on the routes. Do a great job at
- 1:55:20Speaker 6: the line of scrimmage and in press and press man.
- 1:55:24Speaker 6: Great job with those guys. The running backs, I think
- 1:55:26Speaker 6: are very good. They've got a running back that's extremely
- 1:55:29Speaker 6: athletic and, and he's backed up by another kid that
- 1:55:32Speaker 6: you know, it was kind of a one, two punch.
- 1:55:34Speaker 6: The quarterbacks are very athletic and have the ability to
- 1:55:38Speaker 6: get out in space and make plays outside of pockets.
- 1:55:43Speaker 6: They can run and do some creative stuff there. I
- 1:55:46Speaker 6: think they use the tight ends very good, whether it's
- 1:55:50Speaker 6: blocking or getting them down the field in the pass game.
- 1:55:54Speaker 6: They do a nice job with formations. They do a
- 1:55:56Speaker 6: nice job with motions and defense. and really put a
- 1:56:00Speaker 6: lot of stress on defense to make sure, you know,
- 1:56:03Speaker 6: your rules are going to apply to everything that you see.
- 1:56:05Speaker 6: And so I've been really impressed with coach and I,
- 1:56:08Speaker 6: and what he does.
- 1:56:11Speaker 3: How do you, how do you separate out or how
- 1:56:13Speaker 3: do you process when, you know, a team through two games,
- 1:56:16Speaker 3: cause that's all you have to study from this year
- 1:56:19Speaker 3: is kind of bipolar, right? They have a pretty stinky
- 1:56:23Speaker 3: first out outing, and then they play really well against
- 1:56:25Speaker 3: a much better opponent in Washington. I How do you,
- 1:56:29Speaker 3: when you're putting your game plan together, how do you
- 1:56:31Speaker 3: study the film and say, all right, that's more representative
- 1:56:34Speaker 3: of what they really are, or this is why it
- 1:56:36Speaker 3: looked bad in the first game?
- 1:56:39Speaker 6: Speaker 4 0 1. Yeah, I think in the first
- 1:56:40Speaker 6: game they had a few things not go their way.
- 1:56:42Speaker 6: You know, there was some drops, there was some, you know,
- 1:56:47Speaker 6: it's what the Hill state kid leaving the game. You know,
- 1:56:50Speaker 6: I know he threw some interceptions that were unexpected and,
- 1:56:52Speaker 6: and stuff like that. I think that the momentum in
- 1:56:56Speaker 6: the second game really got them going. I think they
- 1:56:59Speaker 6: were in a good fight and battling and that just
- 1:57:02Speaker 6: kept them in the game. And, and this team, as
- 1:57:05Speaker 6: you watch them, you're like, this is a very well-coached tough,
- 1:57:08Speaker 6: mentally tough team. I mean, they play extremely hard. They
- 1:57:12Speaker 6: are not going to back down from anybody, whether it's Washington, Utah,
- 1:57:16Speaker 6: you know, Idaho state. And, and they, they play that way.
- 1:57:19Speaker 6: They got a chip on their shoulder. So they do
- 1:57:22Speaker 6: a good job there. I think this, the momentum in
- 1:57:24Speaker 6: the second game kind of really helped them propel themselves
- 1:57:27Speaker 6: throughout the game. And, you know, they, they kind of
- 1:57:30Speaker 6: fell into some tough spots and, in the Idaho state game. And,
- 1:57:35Speaker 6: and so I, you know, I think it's still the
- 1:57:37Speaker 6: same team. It's just, just a matter of momentum.
- 1:57:39Speaker 2: All right.
- 1:57:40Speaker 3: Last thing before I let you go, take me inside
- 1:57:43Speaker 3: the mind of a defensive coordinator. when they're trying to
- 1:57:46Speaker 3: prep against Utah's offense, Mac G is a mad scientist.
- 1:57:51Speaker 4: He's got two quarterback formations.
- 1:57:53Speaker 2: I don't even know. How do you identify that?
- 1:57:55Speaker 12: Right.
- 1:57:55Speaker 2: Cause we know 11 personnel, 12 personnel, 13 personnel.
- 1:57:58Speaker 3: What do you call the personnel grouping when it's two
- 1:58:00Speaker 3: quarterbacks and a running back and two quarterbacks and two
- 1:58:03Speaker 3: tight ends?
- 1:58:04Speaker 4: What do you call that?
- 1:58:05Speaker 2: Colton?
- 1:58:06Speaker 6: Yeah, it's tough. I tell you what, because I've had
- 1:58:08Speaker 6: to go against it for, you know, throughout the winter
- 1:58:10Speaker 6: and in the spring and fall camp. And so I
- 1:58:14Speaker 6: don't think there's going to be a personnel or a
- 1:58:16Speaker 6: formation that I wouldn't be used to. But that's for sure,
- 1:58:20Speaker 6: because I've pretty much seen it all with the different
- 1:58:24Speaker 6: sets that we've been getting from our offense, which it's awesome.
- 1:58:27Speaker 6: I mean, that's, you know, football's a lot about matchups and,
- 1:58:30Speaker 6: you know, putting guys in. you know, position to expose
- 1:58:35Speaker 6: one another, expose the defense. And, you know, Coach McGiven
- 1:58:39Speaker 6: does a really good job with that. He obviously has
- 1:58:41Speaker 6: two very good quarterbacks that he utilizes. And so, yeah,
- 1:58:45Speaker 6: as a defense coordinator, man, I know you're pulling your
- 1:58:48Speaker 6: hair out because there's all kinds of personnel formations and
- 1:58:51Speaker 6: different things that they do. So you've got to have
- 1:58:55Speaker 6: a well-rounded defense and be able to, you know, account
- 1:58:58Speaker 6: for a lot of different stuff.
- 1:58:59Speaker 9: I lied.
- 1:59:00Speaker 2: One more question.
- 1:59:01Speaker 3: So far, no sacks from the defensive end position. And
- 1:59:05Speaker 3: I know we're getting nitpicky here because wins are wins
- 1:59:08Speaker 3: and that's all that really matters. But, you know, that's
- 1:59:11Speaker 3: something we've grown to expect to be accustomed to with
- 1:59:14Speaker 3: Utah defense, that that pass rushing position generates production there.
- 1:59:18Speaker 3: What's it going to take for those guys to put
- 1:59:20Speaker 3: up numbers and not just, you know, not just affect
- 1:59:23Speaker 3: the quarterback in his pocket?
- 1:59:26Speaker 6: Yeah, you know, those guys will get going. They're talented.
- 1:59:28Speaker 6: They're a talented group. Right now, I know the ball's
- 1:59:32Speaker 6: getting out quick, which, you know, that's why you're getting
- 1:59:35Speaker 6: more of the PBUs and things like that than you
- 1:59:37Speaker 6: are right now at the SACs. And I truly believe
- 1:59:41Speaker 6: that they'll get going. They just got to find their
- 1:59:43Speaker 6: groove and, you know, just us as coaches putting them
- 1:59:46Speaker 6: in positions so they have those opportunities and making sure that,
- 1:59:51Speaker 6: you know, that they have the ability to make those sacks.
- 1:59:55Speaker 6: And so I'm not worried about that at all. And
- 1:59:58Speaker 6: like I said, I mean, it's not that we're not
- 2:00:00Speaker 6: getting sacks. It's just, you know, maybe it's coming from
- 2:00:02Speaker 6: a backer or from a D tackle or whatever it
- 2:00:05Speaker 6: may be. You know, we're still putting pressure on that quarterback.
- 2:00:07Speaker 6: That's the main thing.
- 2:00:10Speaker 3: Well, congratulations on being 2-0. Let's see you go 3-0.
- 2:00:15Speaker 3: Thanks for joining us, and we'll see you up there
- 2:00:18Speaker 3: on Saturday.
- 2:00:19Speaker 12: All right.
- 2:00:20Speaker 6: You bet, OC. Take care.
- 2:00:22Speaker 3: That is Colton Swan, coordinator of corner here with the D.C.
- 2:00:26Speaker 3: Airing of grievances is next on the Sean O'Connell Show,
- 2:00:29Speaker 3: ESPN 700, 92.1 FM.
- 2:00:35Speaker 7: You're tuned to the Sean O'Connell Show from the Murdoch
- 2:00:38Speaker 7: Chevrolet studio of ESPN 700 and 92.1 FM. The tradition
- 2:00:44Speaker 7: of Festivus begins with the airing of grievances.
- 2:00:48Speaker 3: I got a lot of problems with you people.
- 2:00:50Speaker 2: Now, you're going to hear about it.
- 2:00:52Speaker 6: 877-353-0700.
- 2:00:54Speaker 2: Air your grievances here on a Friday. Tell me what's
- 2:00:57Speaker 2: on your mind. Get it off your chest. Head into
- 2:01:05Speaker 2: the weekend burden-free.
- 2:01:06Speaker 3: And enjoy your life as we get ready for Utah
- 2:01:11Speaker 3: versus Utah State. Air your grievances here at Real OC
- 2:01:14Speaker 3: Sports on Twitter, 877-353-0700. You could call us or you
- 2:01:20Speaker 3: could text us to air your grievances. At the risk
- 2:01:24Speaker 3: of getting redundant with the themes of my grievances here,
- 2:01:30Speaker 3: you know that I'm I'm like an old man yelling
- 2:01:32Speaker 3: at the clouds when it comes to AI, when it
- 2:01:36Speaker 3: comes to the inevitable rise of technology and our computer
- 2:01:40Speaker 3: overlords eventually killing us all. Well, I don't want to
- 2:01:45Speaker 3: hasten that, all right? So the little robot that's cruising
- 2:01:49Speaker 3: around here at Smith's Marketplace in Woods Cross, 614 West,
- 2:01:52Speaker 3: 2600 South in Woods Cross, we still have Smith's tailgate
- 2:01:56Speaker 3: passes and Smith's gift cards to give away. We've got
- 2:01:59Speaker 3: Gatorade water bottles to give away. We have, I think, one,
- 2:02:02Speaker 3: maybe we're out of the Starbucks. Yeah, we're out of
- 2:02:04Speaker 3: the Starbucks blankets.
- 2:02:05Speaker 2: We have Taffy, though.
- 2:02:07Speaker 3: Tally is roaming around doing the tallying thing as an
- 2:02:11Speaker 3: inventory robot.
- 2:02:13Speaker 2: I'm probably okay with that, you know, although I don't
- 2:02:16Speaker 2: like replacing human jobs with robot jobs, but whatever.
- 2:02:20Speaker 3: This one, though, feels like it's a bridge too far,
- 2:02:23Speaker 3: and it's ahead of the curve, and I don't know
- 2:02:27Speaker 3: what's going to stop it from happening over and over
- 2:02:29Speaker 3: and over again. We now have an NHL team that
- 2:02:34Speaker 3: is hastening our human demise by replacing their Zamboni driver
- 2:02:42Speaker 3: with a self-driving ice resurfacer. So the Colorado Avalanche are
- 2:02:48Speaker 3: getting rid of their Zamboni driver, and they're letting a
- 2:02:51Speaker 3: robotic Zamboni do the job itself. Being the Zamboni driver
- 2:02:56Speaker 3: and the Zamboni rider has always been kind of a
- 2:02:58Speaker 3: cool thing.
- 2:02:59Speaker 2: Right?
- 2:03:00Speaker 3: Sometimes the Zamboni driver is also the backup emergency goalkeeper.
- 2:03:04Speaker 2: Goaltender. What are we doing here?
- 2:03:07Speaker 3: You're going to put this stupid autonomous Zamboni in goal,
- 2:03:11Speaker 3: are you?
- 2:03:11Speaker 2: I don't like this Colorado Avalanche.
- 2:03:14Speaker 3: I already don't like you because you're the Colorado Avalanche.
- 2:03:17Speaker 3: And now you're getting rid of an old school, honorific, like, incredible...
- 2:03:25Speaker 3: lower position in a hockey franchise the zamboni driver you're
- 2:03:29Speaker 3: getting rid of the zamboni driver how dare you grievance and.
- 2:03:32Speaker 5: Denver would oh see yeah exactly we've we've well documented
- 2:03:38Speaker 5: how overrated we we think the city of denver is
- 2:03:40Speaker 5: and of course their hockey team would do this is really.
- 2:03:45Speaker 2: Dumb come on I don't like it. I don't like
- 2:03:50Speaker 2: it one bit. We have a caller. Did you say
- 2:03:52Speaker 2: Sam from Taylorsville?
- 2:03:53Speaker 4: Sam from Taylorsville, yeah. He's got a grievance for us.
- 2:03:56Speaker 2: T-Bill, stand up. Sam, how are you?
- 2:04:00Speaker 6: I'm good, OC.
- 2:04:00Speaker 9: How are you on this airing and grievance Friday?
- 2:04:04Speaker 2: I'm doing great.
- 2:04:05Speaker 3: The weather has cleared somewhat, but we got some rain
- 2:04:08Speaker 3: and some hail this morning.
- 2:04:11Speaker 2: I got no complaints. Air your grievance for me, Sam.
- 2:04:14Speaker 9: I'm going to echo yours. One, because it's the Colorado Avalanche,
- 2:04:18Speaker 9: but the Zamboni driver, at some point, everyone has that
- 2:04:23Speaker 9: as a dream job going up. So tough grievance to follow,
- 2:04:26Speaker 9: but I'm going to do my best. We had exchanged
- 2:04:30Speaker 9: some texts a while ago, and I told you about
- 2:04:32Speaker 9: my buddy who found... uh, that Rayjean Rondo.
- 2:04:36Speaker 6: Jersey, um, Goodwill.
- 2:04:38Speaker 9: I'm not sure if you remember.
- 2:04:40Speaker 2: Yes.
- 2:04:40Speaker 9: So I'll make several trips to the post office at
- 2:04:43Speaker 9: least every other day as I get my eBay sales out.
- 2:04:48Speaker 9: And I was driving yesterday to the post office that
- 2:04:51Speaker 9: takes me right past an elementary school when they are
- 2:04:55Speaker 9: letting school out.
- 2:04:56Speaker 2: All right.
- 2:04:57Speaker 11: Um, Four crossing.
- 2:04:59Speaker 9: Guards at each side so that they can kind of
- 2:05:02Speaker 9: navigate the elementary traffic as they're walking through. My grievance
- 2:05:07Speaker 9: is with people, hey, there's just traffic. You're in a
- 2:05:11Speaker 9: school zone. It has its own speed limit. Let's not
- 2:05:15Speaker 9: be trying to race four extra cars through the red
- 2:05:19Speaker 9: light because whatever you think you've got going on is
- 2:05:22Speaker 9: super important. Because, one, there's children present. Two, it's just
- 2:05:28Speaker 9: an inconsiderate thing to do when you're always trying to
- 2:05:31Speaker 9: beat everybody through the red light or, you know, going
- 2:05:35Speaker 9: a little bit too fast through the elementary school zone.
- 2:05:37Speaker 9: I don't even have elementary-age kids, but it bothers me.
- 2:05:41Speaker 9: And I kind of want to, like, get out and
- 2:05:43Speaker 9: say something to these people, but they're long gone by
- 2:05:46Speaker 9: the time you get the chance. So hopefully somebody's listening
- 2:05:49Speaker 9: that will abide by the school zone and the crossing
- 2:05:51Speaker 9: guards because– It can get a little ugly out there
- 2:05:54Speaker 9: if we're all just going to do that and think
- 2:05:56Speaker 9: whatever we've got is the most important thing in the world.
- 2:06:00Speaker 3: I will echo that grievance. I do have elementary-age schoolchildren.
- 2:06:03Speaker 3: And let me tell you something. Nothing will fire me
- 2:06:06Speaker 3: up faster than someone doing exactly what you're talking about.
- 2:06:11Speaker 3: When somebody deems that their errand they're running or the
- 2:06:14Speaker 3: appointment they have to get to is more important than
- 2:06:17Speaker 3: the overall general safety of the collective community, children walking
- 2:06:21Speaker 3: about in a neighborhood and exiting school. Grievance against you.
- 2:06:26Speaker 3: Grievance probably really isn't strong enough, if we're being honest.
- 2:06:29Speaker 3: And additionally, shout out to the crossing guards out there.
- 2:06:33Speaker 3: Crossing guard is one of those things that it's probably
- 2:06:39Speaker 3: not given enough thanks.
- 2:06:41Speaker 2: You know what I mean?
- 2:06:42Speaker 3: Because that job, there's no way that's a cool job.
- 2:06:46Speaker 3: There's no way that's a fun job. Nobody grows up
- 2:06:49Speaker 3: wanting to be a crossing guard.
- 2:06:51Speaker 2: Maybe we should. Crossing guards, you fulfill a sincere need
- 2:06:55Speaker 2: in society.
- 2:06:56Speaker 3: And I give a shout-out to all of you. Love
- 2:07:00Speaker 3: to the crossing guards. And thanks to Sam, 877-353-0700, if
- 2:07:03Speaker 3: you want to air a grievance. Also, slow down in
- 2:07:06Speaker 3: the school zone.
- 2:07:08Speaker 2: Don't be that person.
- 2:07:11Speaker 5: School zones, neighborhoods, like if you live where I live, O.C.,
- 2:07:15Speaker 5: I think probably.
- 2:07:17Speaker 4: where you are in the.
- 2:07:18Speaker 5: Avenues too, like they're, they're often narrower streets.
- 2:07:23Speaker 9: Yeah.
- 2:07:23Speaker 5: You know, when you got houses on both sides, that's
- 2:07:26Speaker 5: why the speed limit is slower, but people are in
- 2:07:29Speaker 5: such a hurry. It seems like on my street, we've
- 2:07:32Speaker 5: got basketball hoops in or on the blacktop, you know,
- 2:07:37Speaker 5: on the street there. So we have neighbor kids, uh,
- 2:07:41Speaker 5: playing literally in the street playing basketball and it's always
- 2:07:44Speaker 5: like it's always something for me where i'm like okay
- 2:07:47Speaker 5: even if i'm tempted to go you know a little
- 2:07:49Speaker 5: faster like i do in other streets like i'm always
- 2:07:53Speaker 5: thinking well these kids could be out playing and that's
- 2:07:55Speaker 5: the reason why we got slower speed limits so let's
- 2:07:58Speaker 5: just abide by them in those especially in those areas.
- 2:08:01Speaker 3: In my childhood i grew up at the end of
- 2:08:03Speaker 3: a road right my street dead ended like four houses
- 2:08:07Speaker 3: down from the house i grew up in and the
- 2:08:10Speaker 3: only reason people had to come down our street was
- 2:08:12Speaker 3: if you lived in the neighborhood right and Most people
- 2:08:15Speaker 3: don't speed in their own neighborhoods. So we could play, like,
- 2:08:18Speaker 3: touch football in the street. We could rollerblade and play
- 2:08:20Speaker 3: roller hockey. We could do whatever we wanted in the street.
- 2:08:23Speaker 3: And like you did back then, when you saw a
- 2:08:25Speaker 3: car coming, you'd just yell, car. Everyone would go into
- 2:08:27Speaker 3: the gutters. Car would drive past. Maybe a honk, maybe
- 2:08:30Speaker 3: a wave. And then you'd get back out to your business.
- 2:08:33Speaker 3: The street I live on now is on a hill.
- 2:08:36Speaker 2: And it's also one.
- 2:08:37Speaker 3: Of the only streets in the avenues where you get, like,
- 2:08:41Speaker 3: several hundred yards of uninterrupted non-intersection driving, right? Because the
- 2:08:47Speaker 3: avenues is just that, like, tight grid where it's, you know,
- 2:08:51Speaker 3: you're going up and down these hills, there's a yield
- 2:08:52Speaker 3: sign or a stop sign on pretty much every corner.
- 2:08:55Speaker 2: My street is not like that.
- 2:08:56Speaker 3: My street is, like, probably a kilometer of just, like,
- 2:09:01Speaker 3: open stretch, and it's on a hill.
- 2:09:03Speaker 2: So people go so.
- 2:09:05Speaker 3: Fast right in front of my house, and it drives
- 2:09:08Speaker 3: me insane. So school zones especially, don't do it. 0175 says,
- 2:09:15Speaker 3: my wife is a crossing guard and absolutely loves it.
- 2:09:18Speaker 2: Shout out to your wife. I'm glad she loves it.
- 2:09:20Speaker 2: That's a really cool thing to be doing.
- 2:09:23Speaker 3: And I know it's not like a lucrative position, so
- 2:09:25Speaker 3: you're doing it because you love the kids and you
- 2:09:28Speaker 3: like having that connection, I imagine.
- 2:09:30Speaker 2: So pretty cool.
- 2:09:33Speaker 3: My grievance today, this is from 0957. My grievance today
- 2:09:37Speaker 3: is high school bullying. Tired of kids being jerks, especially
- 2:09:39Speaker 3: around dances and other events. Just be nice and inclusive.
- 2:09:42Speaker 3: It doesn't cost anything.
- 2:09:45Speaker 9: Man.
- 2:09:45Speaker 3: 100%. Look, the official stance of the Sean O'Connell Show
- 2:09:50Speaker 3: is anti-bullying.
- 2:09:52Speaker 2: The official stance of the Sean O'Connell Show is bully
- 2:09:55Speaker 2: the bullies. All right?
- 2:09:56Speaker 3: Because sometimes that's the only way that they learn.
- 2:10:00Speaker 5: Right?
- 2:10:01Speaker 3: There's a language that mean people speak, and that language
- 2:10:05Speaker 3: is means. So be the nice person who's capable of mean.
- 2:10:10Speaker 3: Be mean to the mean person and teach them a
- 2:10:11Speaker 3: lesson and stop them from being a bully.
- 2:10:14Speaker 2: I hate that. I actually have, like, weird nightmares.
- 2:10:20Speaker 3: About, you know, people coming back to me from my
- 2:10:23Speaker 3: past life and being like, hey, did you know you
- 2:10:24Speaker 3: bullied me? Because no one has that perception of themselves, right,
- 2:10:28Speaker 3: when they're growing up. Like, I would never bully anyone.
- 2:10:30Speaker 3: I would never be a bully. But, you know, perception
- 2:10:33Speaker 3: is reality. And if someone felt like you were bullying them, yikes.
- 2:10:37Speaker 3: That's like a weird fear of mine, even though I'm
- 2:10:41Speaker 3: no longer in a position to bully anyone, except James,
- 2:10:44Speaker 3: which I do aggressively.
- 2:10:45Speaker 2: But that's for a bit, all right? So that doesn't count.
- 2:10:49Speaker 5: Yeah, that might be part of my grievance later, but
- 2:10:51Speaker 5: it's okay. We can set it aside for now.
- 2:10:54Speaker 2: Fair enough, fair enough. All right, who did you say
- 2:10:56Speaker 2: is on the phone line? I love Paul.
- 2:10:58Speaker 4: We got Paul, yeah.
- 2:10:59Speaker 2: All right, Paul, how are you?
- 2:11:02Speaker 12: All right.
- 2:11:03Speaker 6: I'm great.
- 2:11:03Speaker 11: Hey, I just did a road trip from Utah to
- 2:11:07Speaker 11: Wash the Gorge in Washington for three nights at Dave
- 2:11:11Speaker 11: Matthews Band at the Gorge.
- 2:11:13Speaker 2: Beautiful venue.
- 2:11:14Speaker 11: If you've never been there for music, go there. But
- 2:11:17Speaker 11: pulling a trailer on our roads is a pain because
- 2:11:21Speaker 11: despite all the stuff we can do, we can't seem
- 2:11:25Speaker 11: to level out road repairs properly. So you're going along
- 2:11:28Speaker 11: the road, and either the repair is two inches below
- 2:11:31Speaker 11: the level of the road, two inches above, and it's
- 2:11:33Speaker 11: just bouncing the shit out of it. Freaking road's fixed.
- 2:11:38Speaker 2: All right.
- 2:11:39Speaker 3: If you're out there at UDOT or Highway Patrol or whatever,
- 2:11:43Speaker 3: you heard what Paul just said.
- 2:11:44Speaker 2: That's a grievance from Paul. Level the road out. He's
- 2:11:47Speaker 2: trying to haul a trailer up and back. All right.
- 2:11:52Speaker 2: Let's go.
- 2:11:54Speaker 3: Leslie on the text line, grievance with Utah football. Oh, wait,
- 2:12:02Speaker 3: this is not Leslie. This is 6680. Grievance with Utah football.
- 2:12:05Speaker 3: Haven't cut our teeth against top-tier competition. Would love to
- 2:12:08Speaker 3: see what the team is really made of.
- 2:12:09Speaker 2: Otherwise, no.
- 2:12:10Speaker 3: That's not a grievance. They just haven't played anybody yet.
- 2:12:14Speaker 3: That's a grievance with that being a grievance.
- 2:12:16Speaker 4: Come on. Schedule tougher, okay?
- 2:12:18Speaker 5: I think that was the revised grievance there.
- 2:12:22Speaker 2: It's just grievance with.
- 2:12:23Speaker 3: Your lack of patience, all right? They're going to get
- 2:12:25Speaker 3: tough competition sooner than later.
- 2:12:27Speaker 4: I think that it's okay.
- 2:12:29Speaker 5: I'm one, too, that I want to see entertaining games,
- 2:12:33Speaker 5: and I want to see games against teams that are near.
- 2:12:37Speaker 4: The same level, I think, like we all do, right?
- 2:12:38Speaker 5: We want to see challenging games that are fun and
- 2:12:41Speaker 5: entertaining and And if you're a Utes fan, you want
- 2:12:43Speaker 5: to see the Utes win all those challenging games, right? Also, though,
- 2:12:49Speaker 5: I think I've begrudgingly been okay with the fact that
- 2:12:54Speaker 5: there's no preseason. So, yeah, you're going to play an
- 2:12:58Speaker 5: FCS team at the start of the year because you
- 2:13:00Speaker 5: don't have a preseason.
- 2:13:02Speaker 4: Every game counts.
- 2:13:03Speaker 5: So, yeah, you're going to schedule a soft one to
- 2:13:06Speaker 5: help you have a preseason game that counts as a
- 2:13:10Speaker 5: win on your schedule, hopefully, if you don't play below
- 2:13:14Speaker 5: your level, right? And you're going to have the group
- 2:13:16Speaker 5: of six team that you're expected.
- 2:13:19Speaker 4: To win early on or below.
- 2:13:22Speaker 5: I mean, when they scheduled Arkansas, they hoped that it
- 2:13:25Speaker 5: would be a challenge.
- 2:13:26Speaker 4: It didn't end up being one, right? But, like, you're
- 2:13:28Speaker 4: going to have these.
- 2:13:29Speaker 5: I think I've come to terms with these are okay
- 2:13:32Speaker 5: because you've got to have some tune-up games.
- 2:13:37Speaker 3: Leslie on the text line, my grievance, because of NIL
- 2:13:40Speaker 3: and all the money that players are getting, it seems
- 2:13:42Speaker 3: that free education is not very important. There are many
- 2:13:45Speaker 3: people who could never afford to go to college, many
- 2:13:47Speaker 3: people who are paying off big student loans in order
- 2:13:49Speaker 3: to go to college. I feel like we've gotten away
- 2:13:51Speaker 3: from appreciation that we are given a college degree. It's
- 2:13:54Speaker 3: all about money. This one is tough for me, Leslie.
- 2:13:58Speaker 3: So I've said many times on the air, and I'll
- 2:14:00Speaker 3: say it again, most people... In a college football program,
- 2:14:04Speaker 3: we're talking about 100 people. Now, 105 guys on a roster, okay?
- 2:14:09Speaker 2: Most of those.
- 2:14:09Speaker 3: People aren't even, quote-unquote, at the end of the day,
- 2:14:12Speaker 3: they're not even worth the scholarship, right? And when I
- 2:14:16Speaker 3: say worth the scholarship, I don't mean as human beings.
- 2:14:18Speaker 3: I mean as football players, right? Most people don't contribute. Like,
- 2:14:23Speaker 3: let's say it's $ 100, 000 for your four-year.
- 2:14:25Speaker 2: Education, and I know that's probably low-balling.
- 2:14:27Speaker 3: Most people are not contributing in their time $ 100, 000 of
- 2:14:30Speaker 3: value to a team.
- 2:14:33Speaker 2: It's just not the case.
- 2:14:36Speaker 3: For every quality contributor that you find on a college
- 2:14:41Speaker 3: football team, there are three or four guys that are
- 2:14:46Speaker 3: not quality contributors, that are not pulling their weight, so
- 2:14:49Speaker 3: to speak. And now that there's NIL on top of that,
- 2:14:53Speaker 3: I'm like, I've always thought that the scholarship was more
- 2:14:55Speaker 3: than enough.
- 2:14:55Speaker 2: Of course that would be my.
- 2:14:56Speaker 3: Perception as a low-life scrub nobody walk on, right? Like,
- 2:15:01Speaker 3: all I wanted was a scholarship. scholarship guys that are
- 2:15:04Speaker 3: bringing in money, that are playing, that are the reason
- 2:15:07Speaker 3: your butt is in the seats, those guys have always
- 2:15:10Speaker 3: had and definitely now have a real case of being like, hey,
- 2:15:14Speaker 3: pay me.
- 2:15:15Speaker 2: Share some of this money with me.
- 2:15:17Speaker 3: The issue I have with it now, with what NIL became,
- 2:15:20Speaker 3: is that it's not sharing in the profit with the people.
- 2:15:24Speaker 2: It's still like guesswork.
- 2:15:25Speaker 3: And if you're paying a freshman to come and maybe
- 2:15:28Speaker 3: he works out, maybe he doesn't, and whether coaches are
- 2:15:30Speaker 3: willing to admit it or not, it is going to
- 2:15:32Speaker 3: skew the level of opportunity you give to a player.
- 2:15:36Speaker 3: how much you're paying that person. So it's not a
- 2:15:38Speaker 3: waste of money, right?
- 2:15:39Speaker 6: So, yes.
- 2:15:40Speaker 2: On one hand, I echo your grievance.
- 2:15:42Speaker 3: On the other, though, true NIL, if it was actually
- 2:15:46Speaker 3: designed and executed the way that it was supposed to be,
- 2:15:49Speaker 3: like philosophically the way that it was supposed to be done,
- 2:15:52Speaker 3: NIL would be a good thing because you're helping the
- 2:15:56Speaker 3: labor force that generates the billions of dollars in college football.
- 2:16:00Speaker 2: Share in that bounty.
- 2:16:02Speaker 9: But you're right.
- 2:16:03Speaker 2: That's not where we're at. That's not what it is.
- 2:16:04Speaker 2: That's not what we've done. So I will half echo
- 2:16:08Speaker 2: the grievance. Derek, our most loyal texter.
- 2:16:13Speaker 3: Grievance, if you're at a left turn and have a
- 2:16:15Speaker 3: green light, if you have a four-car length to turn,
- 2:16:18Speaker 3: please go. If I miss the light because you didn't go,
- 2:16:21Speaker 3: I'm not going to be happy. Four-car length, depending on
- 2:16:25Speaker 3: how fast the oncoming traffic is going, you're probably safe.
- 2:16:28Speaker 2: All right. But proceed. Proceed.
- 2:16:31Speaker 3: With realistic caution. Here's my grievance from 0175. My kid's
- 2:16:38Speaker 3: elementary school has banned playing tag during.
- 2:16:43Speaker 2: What?
- 2:16:44Speaker 3: They banned playing tag during recess. I don't know why
- 2:16:47Speaker 3: tag would be banned. I guess tag sets up weird
- 2:16:54Speaker 3: dynamics sometimes for the slow kids. But as someone who
- 2:16:58Speaker 3: was not... In my younger years, I was portly. And
- 2:17:03Speaker 3: I didn't get faster until I grew a little bit height-wise.
- 2:17:07Speaker 3: So tag wasn't always super fun for me. I was
- 2:17:10Speaker 3: never the fastest kid. I still wanted to play tag.
- 2:17:15Speaker 5: I wonder, are the kids at his kid's school, are
- 2:17:20Speaker 5: they shoving instead of just tagging? Is it getting a
- 2:17:24Speaker 5: little too violent in that way?
- 2:17:27Speaker 4: But I don't know.
- 2:17:29Speaker 5: It seems like an overreaction to whatever it is that's
- 2:17:32Speaker 5: causing it.
- 2:17:33Speaker 3: If that's the case, you take the kids who are
- 2:17:35Speaker 3: going too hard out of the tag.
- 2:17:37Speaker 2: You don't take tag away from the kids. That's crazy.
- 2:17:40Speaker 2: All right.
- 2:17:42Speaker 3: Yeah, whatever elementary school that is, bring tag back, you weirdos.
- 2:17:45Speaker 3: 9590 says, Grievance, why didn't we get a better college?
- 2:17:50Speaker 3: for UFC 323? This is happening on the Utah bye week,
- 2:17:54Speaker 3: October 3rd at the Delta Center, so right after the
- 2:17:58Speaker 3: Utah Mammoth puck drop on the season. the UFC is
- 2:18:01Speaker 3: bringing it. It's a numbered event. They're supposed to be big.
- 2:18:05Speaker 3: Things did not come together. This is a bad card.
- 2:18:07Speaker 3: There's no other way to put it. We've been spoiled
- 2:18:10Speaker 3: in the past. You've had some really cool fights in
- 2:18:11Speaker 3: the past. You've had some really cool finishes in main
- 2:18:14Speaker 3: events in the past. The head kick knockout come from
- 2:18:17Speaker 3: behind victory for Leon Edwards over Kamaru Usman was amazing.
- 2:18:21Speaker 3: The Poirier versus Gaethje head kick knockout. I mean, all
- 2:18:24Speaker 3: of it was amazing. This one kind of stinks. I
- 2:18:28Speaker 3: will say, though, I believe it's the first fight on
- 2:18:31Speaker 3: the card. Our own local guy, Court McGee, is having
- 2:18:37Speaker 3: his retirement fight. He's 40 years old. He's been in
- 2:18:40Speaker 3: the UFC for like 20 years now. He has made
- 2:18:43Speaker 3: a real life and a real career. He has represented
- 2:18:46Speaker 3: our home state well. Court McGee is having what I
- 2:18:49Speaker 3: believe to be his very last fight on his contract
- 2:18:51Speaker 3: and in his career. And that is reason enough to
- 2:18:54Speaker 3: be there and to go. To give an ovation to
- 2:18:57Speaker 3: our guy.
- 2:18:58Speaker 2: Our homegrown... product.
- 2:19:01Speaker 3: Closing out his career at the Delta Center in Salt
- 2:19:04Speaker 3: Lake City. I hope it's as good as he dreams
- 2:19:08Speaker 3: that it should be because, man, he's had a really,
- 2:19:10Speaker 3: really impressive career. The card itself, kind of a stinker,
- 2:19:14Speaker 3: but shout out.
- 2:19:15Speaker 2: To Court McGee.
- 2:19:15Speaker 3: We're going to try to get him on in the
- 2:19:16Speaker 3: next couple of weeks to talk about, you know, if
- 2:19:19Speaker 3: indeed he thinks this is the true retirement and everything else.
- 2:19:26Speaker 12: 8441.
- 2:19:26Speaker 3: My grievances for parents who are living their athletic careers
- 2:19:28Speaker 3: through their children are If your daughter strikes out in
- 2:19:30Speaker 3: a game, it's not the end of the world.
- 2:19:31Speaker 2: There's no need to walk over to.
- 2:19:32Speaker 3: The dugout and chew her out and take her energy
- 2:19:34Speaker 3: out of the game, particularly when our team depends on
- 2:19:37Speaker 3: her energy. Look, parents are the number one problem in
- 2:19:44Speaker 3: youth sports. We've talked about how it's so expensive and
- 2:19:46Speaker 3: it's so crazy. Parents are the number one problem. It's just,
- 2:19:52Speaker 3: that's the case, right?
- 2:19:53Speaker 2: Don't be the bad parent in sports.
- 2:19:56Speaker 6: My.
- 2:19:57Speaker 3: My daughter's playing machine pitch right now. And there's a
- 2:20:00Speaker 3: couple people.
- 2:20:01Speaker 2: She's seven.
- 2:20:03Speaker 3: There's a couple people who think that their child's future
- 2:20:06Speaker 3: and scholarship rides on what's going on in these seven-year-old
- 2:20:10Speaker 3: baseball games.
- 2:20:10Speaker 2: And it is obnoxious. It is absurd. I have a
- 2:20:14Speaker 2: real problem biting my tongue.
- 2:20:17Speaker 3: But I know what happens if I don't bite my
- 2:20:18Speaker 3: tongue and then people get lippy with me. I'm not
- 2:20:21Speaker 3: real good in those scenarios. So I do bite my tongue.
- 2:20:23Speaker 3: But grievance echoed. Do not live vicariously through your children
- 2:20:28Speaker 3: for your musical career, for your athletic career that you
- 2:20:33Speaker 3: didn't have, for whatever dating life you feel like you
- 2:20:36Speaker 3: missed out on.
- 2:20:36Speaker 2: Don't be a weirdo parent. It's the worst.
- 2:20:44Speaker 3: Ryan says, I second Paul on the roads. I'm constantly
- 2:20:47Speaker 3: pulling a trailer, and I swear chiropractors in UDOT are
- 2:20:50Speaker 3: in cahoots.
- 2:20:51Speaker 2: Utah has terrible roads. As soon as you cross the border,
- 2:20:55Speaker 2: roads are fine.
- 2:20:56Speaker 3: Big chiropractic and big UDOT might be in cahoots.
- 2:21:02Speaker 2: They might be making sure that your spine gets rattled
- 2:21:05Speaker 2: by uneven roads.
- 2:21:07Speaker 5: Maybe big mechanics, too, because it's going to take your
- 2:21:10Speaker 5: car out of alignment just like your body gets out
- 2:21:12Speaker 5: of alignment with the chiropractic. Maybe it's a three-industry thing
- 2:21:16Speaker 5: going on here.
- 2:21:19Speaker 2: Wally, I don't think you're going to find a lot
- 2:21:21Speaker 2: of people to echo this grievance, Wally.
- 2:21:23Speaker 3: My grievance is against Ted Lasso. The first season was
- 2:21:26Speaker 3: mildly amusing. By the end of the series, I was
- 2:21:28Speaker 3: wishing for every character to die. Even worse, it gave
- 2:21:30Speaker 3: birth to trash like shrinking and hacks. Give me some
- 2:21:35Speaker 3: dark humor. Look, you can find dark humor, Wally. You
- 2:21:39Speaker 3: just go to HBO.
- 2:21:41Speaker 2: You're on the wrong network, dude.
- 2:21:44Speaker 3: Don't air a grievance against Ted Lasso. Ted Lasso is
- 2:21:46Speaker 3: feel-good comedy. It's emotional.
- 2:21:50Speaker 2: It's, like, heartfelt.
- 2:21:52Speaker 3: It doesn't have to be your cup of tea. That's
- 2:21:54Speaker 3: totally fine. But don't air a grievance against Ted. Air
- 2:21:57Speaker 3: a grievance against your own inability to find the dark
- 2:22:00Speaker 3: humor that is all over the place.
- 2:22:04Speaker 2: In television. Come on, man. Uh, Isaac.
- 2:22:10Speaker 3: As a fellow resident of the avenues, I second the
- 2:22:13Speaker 3: agreements of drivers that speed down the hill past my house,
- 2:22:15Speaker 3: but I'll add props to my retired neighbor, Mark, who
- 2:22:17Speaker 3: will sit on his porch and scream 20 at every
- 2:22:21Speaker 3: car that zooms by.
- 2:22:23Speaker 2: Thank you, Mark. That's amazing. That's so good.
- 2:22:28Speaker 6: Um.
- 2:22:31Speaker 3: Isaac, please text me what street you live on in
- 2:22:33Speaker 3: the avenues. I need to find Mark, and I need to.
- 2:22:36Speaker 5: You need to pull up a lawn chair and just
- 2:22:38Speaker 5: watch him yell at cars.
- 2:22:40Speaker 4: Absolutely.
- 2:22:40Speaker 6: Yeah. 20.
- 2:22:41Speaker 2: It is 20. 20 is.
- 2:22:43Speaker 3: You know why I like the avenues speed limit of 20?
- 2:22:47Speaker 3: Everyone's going to go faster than 20, right? Everyone's going
- 2:22:50Speaker 3: to go 25, maybe up to 30. That's kind of reasonable.
- 2:22:55Speaker 3: Even on a neighborhood street, you could be going 25
- 2:22:57Speaker 3: miles an hour and still be.
- 2:22:58Speaker 2: In control of... as long as you're not looking at
- 2:23:00Speaker 2: your phone.
- 2:23:01Speaker 3: You can still, like, 25 is probably okay on most
- 2:23:04Speaker 3: neighborhood streets. You start creeping up into the 45s that
- 2:23:08Speaker 3: people are hauling down my hill, yeah, 20, that's too much. Wow,
- 2:23:13Speaker 3: we've got a lot of grievances coming in today. We've
- 2:23:16Speaker 3: got to take one last break here at Smith's. I'll
- 2:23:18Speaker 3: close it out with some more grievances. We'll give away
- 2:23:20Speaker 3: some tickets to Five Finger Death Punch. They are coming
- 2:23:24Speaker 3: next week to the Utah First Credit Union Amphitheater. Two
- 2:23:27Speaker 3: tickets if you can answer our trivia question. It's the
- 2:23:31Speaker 3: Sean O'Connell Show, wrapping up on a Friday next, ESPN
- 2:23:34Speaker 3: 700 and 92.1 FM.
- 2:23:37Speaker 7: This is the Sean O'Connell Show, your home of the
- 2:23:41Speaker 7: best inside of your Utes. Let's get back to OC
- 2:23:44Speaker 7: from the Murdoch Chevrolet studio of ESPN 700 and 92.1 FM.
- 2:23:53Speaker 2: This is amazing. We just had somebody walk in.
- 2:23:57Speaker 3: With a 2008 Utah undefeated national champion shirt.
- 2:24:02Speaker 2: I love it. Great to see it, sir.
- 2:24:05Speaker 6: Go Utes.
- 2:24:06Speaker 3: We're closing out the show here on ESPN 700 and 92.1 FM,
- 2:24:10Speaker 3: 614 West, 2600 South in Woods Cross. Tailgate passes, Smith's
- 2:24:14Speaker 3: gift cards. Big thanks to the Smith's Marketplace for treating
- 2:24:18Speaker 3: us so well every time they have us out. We'll
- 2:24:21Speaker 3: be out a couple more times during these home games. Oh,
- 2:24:25Speaker 3: my goodness, great stuff. We have a pair of tickets
- 2:24:28Speaker 3: to give away to Five Finger Death Punch coming next week,
- 2:24:34Speaker 3: September 22nd, to the Utah First Credit Union Amphitheater. If
- 2:24:38Speaker 3: you can answer this question, 877-353-0700, Josh Allen is climbing
- 2:24:46Speaker 3: the leaderboard for all-time rushing.
- 2:24:49Speaker 2: Touchdowns in the NFL.
- 2:24:52Speaker 3: Where is Josh Allen currently among all touchdown scores, rushing
- 2:24:58Speaker 3: touchdown scores, all-time in the NFL? We talked about this
- 2:25:02Speaker 3: earlier on the show. He had a couple last night.
- 2:25:05Speaker 3: He is climbing into a place that only running backs
- 2:25:08Speaker 3: are supposed to occupy in NFL statistical history. So where
- 2:25:14Speaker 3: is he at on the all-time list of touchdown scores,
- 2:25:17Speaker 3: rushing touchdown scores, As of today. 877-353-0700 for a pair
- 2:25:22Speaker 3: of tickets to Five Finger Death Punch. Motley Crue is
- 2:25:25Speaker 3: also coming to Utah. That'll be at the Utah First
- 2:25:28Speaker 3: Credit Union Amphitheater September 21st. Spence is going to give
- 2:25:32Speaker 3: away a pair of tickets on the drive today around
- 2:25:35Speaker 3: 4 p.m. So if you didn't win the tickets to
- 2:25:36Speaker 3: Five Finger Death Punch here, maybe some crew tickets for
- 2:25:39Speaker 3: you later. Okay. 8613 had a couple more grievances. In
- 2:25:43Speaker 3: the avenues there are There are many two-way stop signs.
- 2:25:51Speaker 3: After picking up my kid once a week, someone can't
- 2:25:53Speaker 3: tell the difference between a two-way and a four-way and
- 2:25:56Speaker 3: pull out right in front of me. I've had a
- 2:25:57Speaker 3: few narrow misses, and now I just expect it.
- 2:25:59Speaker 2: Come on, people.
- 2:26:01Speaker 3: Yeah, the two-way stop sign and the four-way stop, that
- 2:26:04Speaker 3: can get pretty crazy. Somebody, Darius, said, oh, see, you
- 2:26:10Speaker 3: remind me of Keith Jardine, the fighter. That's my grievance.
- 2:26:13Speaker 3: That is not a compliment at all. Respect to the
- 2:26:16Speaker 3: Dean of Mean, Keith Jardine, as a fighter, but he
- 2:26:19Speaker 3: is not a handsome man. That's not good. That is
- 2:26:22Speaker 3: not a flattering comparison. Okay, this is amazing. 1466, echoing
- 2:26:29Speaker 3: grievance here. My grievance, people who stay directly in front
- 2:26:34Speaker 3: of the doors at restaurants and fast food places to
- 2:26:37Speaker 3: have a conversation with their partner. Seriously, people are trying
- 2:26:39Speaker 3: to get in and out. You've got an entire parking lot, sidewalk,
- 2:26:42Speaker 3: probably have the state of Utah available to you. You
- 2:26:44Speaker 3: choose the exact two feet everyone needs to use to
- 2:26:46Speaker 3: enter the building. Move out of the way. Have your
- 2:26:49Speaker 3: conversation literally anywhere else. The doorway is not your personal
- 2:26:53Speaker 3: conference room. I think we have a problem with this
- 2:26:55Speaker 3: in the state of Utah and probably in the United
- 2:26:57Speaker 3: States in general. We get all wrapped up in our
- 2:27:00Speaker 3: own stuff all the time, and we stop when we're
- 2:27:02Speaker 3: supposed to still be moving. Top of escalator, bottom of escalator, doorways,
- 2:27:07Speaker 3: all that good stuff. So, yeah, that's a grievance. That's
- 2:27:10Speaker 3: a valid grievance. Big thanks to everyone who listened on
- 2:27:14Speaker 3: the show today. Thanks to all of you who joined us.
